- 0:00uh starting out. What do you think about
- 0:01your group so far? I know it's just been
- 0:03a couple months, I guess.
- 0:04>> Yeah, excited. You know, it's it's fun
- 0:06in the month of February to to get back
- 0:08on campus. Um you get hired and you
- 0:10immediately hit the road recruiting and
- 0:13um so it's it's been awesome this past
- 0:15week or so to to to get back around the
- 0:18guys and excited about the group. Um,
- 0:21you know, with Jared and Joe and and JJ
- 0:24as as the returning guys and then
- 0:26adding, you know, Nate and and Deshawn
- 0:29Wac um think we got a great combination
- 0:32of of talent and and you know, some guys
- 0:35with some versatility. That's really
- 0:36been the the biggest word that comes to
- 0:38mind.
- 0:39>> Now, am I right? This is the fourth time
- 0:41you and DJ have worked together,
- 0:42different places.
- 0:43>> Gosh, yeah. 2007 was a long time ago. Uh
- 0:46that was the first time we we got
- 0:47connected. That was Stanford. um
- 0:49Stanford to Florida. Um Florida um left
- 0:54and came back again. So if you count
- 0:55Florida twice, I guess. And then uh Old
- 0:58Miss in in 20121. So
- 1:00>> DJ have hair back at Stanford.
- 1:02>> He did. Um my It's funny. My my daughter
- 1:06um when she came to the facility for the
- 1:08first time saw the picture was like,
- 1:10"Dad, look how bald coach Durkin is."
- 1:14>> I remind him every day. Don't worry.
- 1:15>> That's good. That's good. Yeah.
- 1:17>> Thank you. Thanks, Brad.
- 1:17>> No doubt. You mentioned Deshawn Wack.
- 1:20How important was it for you guys to to
- 1:21bring in someone who's got as much
- 1:23experience in the SEC as he does?
- 1:25>> Yeah, it's a huge addition. Um, you
- 1:27know, a guy that that understands the
- 1:28league, right, and understands the the
- 1:30level of, you know, competition, and
- 1:32Nate's the same way, you know, coming
- 1:34from Missouri last year. Um, and so, you
- 1:36know, anytime you can add a guy like
- 1:38that who um gets it and and knows what
- 1:41it takes to to compete at this level is
- 1:44is a great addition.
- 1:47Then talk a little about the younger
- 1:48guys. Jared Smith specifically, I mean,
- 1:49you haven't been around that long, but
- 1:51you know, as a fivestar come out of high
- 1:52school. What is it about him that, you
- 1:54know, gives him so much potential?
- 1:56>> Yeah, Jared's got a ton of potential.
- 1:57Um, he he's got a great combination of
- 2:00of size, um, right, and length, um,
- 2:03along with the the skill set, the
- 2:05athleticism, the coordination. Um, I was
- 2:07giving him crap the other day about, you
- 2:09know, how do you not trip over yourself
- 2:10with a size 18 shoe, whatever the hell
- 2:12he's got, you know, on his feet. But,
- 2:14um, you know, excited about about his
- 2:17potential and and got to have a great
- 2:19offseason and great spring ball going
- 2:22forward to to be ready for for the
- 2:24season.
- 2:25>> You have any idea yet who you like at
- 2:27five, who you like at Edge? Any idea on
- 2:29that yet or is it just get them out
- 2:30there?
- 2:31>> No, it's and that's kind of the fun
- 2:32part, right? Is is really we've got some
- 2:35guys in the room that can play both. Um,
- 2:37and so training guys to to, you know,
- 2:40learn both, challenging guys to to learn
- 2:43both has been big, um, here as we start
- 2:45to to do some of the football stuff.
- 2:46And, um, we we'll put the pads on and
- 2:49and figure out what guys might do the
- 2:51best. But I tell them all the time, you
- 2:54create value for yourself in that if I
- 2:57can go to coach Durkin and say, hey, so
- 2:59and so can play both, man, that that
- 3:02checks a lot of boxes. um and and and
- 3:04creates a lot of value for you as an
- 3:06individual, but also for for Durk as the
- 3:08the play caller.
- 3:09>> DJ was talking about uh some some other
- 3:12guys that uh you guys may take a look at
- 3:15linebackers. Can you talk to to DJ Brad?
- 3:17Any about about some of those guys that
- 3:19you might take a look at?
- 3:20>> Yeah, I mean we're we're going to
- 3:21evaluate through the month of February
- 3:23as we get into these workouts and you
- 3:25know that that linebacker room is loaded
- 3:28with with a ton of talent, right? And so
- 3:30you're always looking for ways to get
- 3:31your best 11 on the field. And if
- 3:34somebody from that room can can do that,
- 3:36um, you know, skill set wise, then um,
- 3:39be happy to, you know, coach them and
- 3:41and and help them. So um, we'll see kind
- 3:43of through February and and then, you
- 3:45know, into spring ball if there's
- 3:47anybody like that.
- 3:48>> Nate Johnson didn't have a whole bunch
- 3:50of playing time last year, but you
- 3:51obviously saw stuff from them. What was
- 3:53that? Yeah, I I um Nate's a guy that,
- 3:57you know, has great frame, great length,
- 4:00and and a great skill set. If you look
- 4:02back to his Appalachin State film, um
- 4:04you know, played a lot of really good
- 4:06ball, right? I think got in a situation
- 4:08at Missouri where he was behind some
- 4:09guys and you know, that happens. Um but
- 4:13excited about what Nate brings to the
- 4:15room. Uh mature um you know, a guy that
- 4:18that that's seen it, been through it. um
- 4:20and and knows that his window of
- 4:22opportunity really is shrinking and that
- 4:24creates a lot of urgency and a lot of
- 4:26you know um work ethic.
- 4:29>> Are you seeing that with him so far in
- 4:31>> Definitely. Yeah. I mean there there's
- 4:33you know he he brings a great presence
- 4:34to to the room and and you know on the
- 4:36field as well. So um excited to to to
- 4:40continue to see him progress.
- 4:42>> Have you seen anybody stepping up as a
- 4:44leader in that room so far? Now you're
- 4:46losing falls over fall girls,
- 4:48>> right? Jeldendrick. Yeah, I mean, you
- 4:50know, ton of talent, ton of production,
- 4:51ton of leadership that that was, you
- 4:53know, in the group last year that's no
- 4:55longer here. And so, I think it's early.
- 4:57I think it's one of those things where
- 5:00guys need to to take that opportunity to
- 5:02to, you know, grow in that role. Um, you
- 5:06know, I challenge them that you got to
- 5:07make sure that that you're taking care
- 5:09of your business before you're trying to
- 5:10to to lead others, right? But, um,
- 5:14always going to continue to to push guys
- 5:16to to grow as, you know, as leaders. And
- 5:19Coach Golish says it all the time, man,
- 5:21it's got to be player driven, right? If
- 5:23it's just coach driven, we're we're
- 5:24going to reach a certain limit.
- 5:26>> When you're out recruiting, what are you
- 5:27looking for in an edge guy?
- 5:29>> You know, it's a it's a hard position to
- 5:31to find because it's a great
- 5:33combination. You know, some people think
- 5:35edge and they think uh, you know, an
- 5:38apex inside backer or something like
- 5:39that. No, it's it's a guy that's really
- 5:41a hybrid defensive end, right? Hey, that
- 5:44can set edges in the SEC. Um, so you got
- 5:46to have the length, right? But but also,
- 5:49you know, affecting the quarterback,
- 5:50pass rushing, um, the ability to to drop
- 5:53some playing space, right? We're going
- 5:54to do a lot with that guy. Um, and so
- 5:58it's the ultimate combo player and and
- 6:01combo athlete.
- 6:02>> How would you kind of describe yourself
- 6:03as a recruiter?
- 6:05>> Um, I don't know. I don't think there's
- 6:08a recruiting version of me versus
- 6:10another, right? I try and, you know,
- 6:12been doing it long enough where, you
- 6:13know, you're you're really looking to
- 6:15build those relationships. Um, looking
- 6:18to be genuine. I, you know, I tell guys
- 6:20all the time, what you see is what you
- 6:21get. And, you know, um, coming to a
- 6:24spring practice, watching us do what we
- 6:26do, you know, that that that's a great
- 6:27evaluation of, you know, um, what kind
- 6:30of coach I am and and, you know, the
- 6:32things that that you're going to get as
- 6:33a player in my room. What's it been like
- 6:35working not only with Dirt but Tim
- 6:36Banks? I mean, three SEC VCs all
- 6:39together on stats. It's
- 6:40>> been awesome, man. The the the wealth of
- 6:41knowledge in the room. Um the energy in
- 6:44the room, you know, guys that that
- 6:46understand this conference, guys that
- 6:48understand, you know, what it takes to
- 6:50to to win at a high level. It's been a
- 6:52lot of fun and uh been, you know, been a
- 6:55great, like I said, two months here and
- 6:57and you know, excited going forward.
- 7:00>> You've been in this conference. It's
- 7:01different schools, right? I'm sure you
- 7:02played here as a with another school.
- 7:04>> Sure.
- 7:05>> What brought you to Auburn? What do you
- 7:06think about Auburn?
- 7:07>> You know, it's amazing how many people
- 7:09over the course of my career, whether
- 7:11they've played here, whether they've
- 7:12worked here, um how much they love the
- 7:15community here at Auburn and that's
- 7:17really what's what stood out. Um you
- 7:20know, as you're going through a
- 7:21transition as a coach, um the way that a
- 7:23town and a community opens their arms to
- 7:25you is is awesome. and I'm excited to
- 7:29get my family, right, moved over and
- 7:30settled and all th those kinds of
- 7:32things. But um it it's the community,
- 7:34the the football is first class, the the
- 7:36facilities, the stadium, the home game
- 7:38environment. It doesn't get any better,
- 7:40right? But, you know, what makes it
- 7:42different, I think, is you know, the
- 7:44town of Auburn, the community of Auburn,
- 7:46and the alumni of Auburn.
- 7:47>> I'm ask about a couple more guys. You
- 7:49talked about up JJ Paul, just what have
- 7:51you seen on him so far? Where do you see
- 7:53his potential?
- 7:55JJ is uh has been awesome and and he's a
- 7:59guy, you know, that kind of made that
- 8:00transition from linebacker, right, to to
- 8:02playing on the edge and, you know, his
- 8:05combination of athleticism and and and
- 8:07the skill set that that that he's going
- 8:09to bring to the position is exciting. Um
- 8:13you know, there's obviously every guy
- 8:16every guy's got things they got to work
- 8:17on and and so he knows what those are.
- 8:20the maturity of identifying, you know,
- 8:22hey, I got to get better at this. Um,
- 8:25those have been great conversations with
- 8:26him and so, you know, excited to to to
- 8:29see what he brings.
- 8:30>> And then Joe Phillips, a lot of guys who
- 8:32don't play for a couple years end up
- 8:34moving on, but he decided to come back
- 8:36and continue to push himself. What do
- 8:38you see now?
- 8:38>> Yeah, Joe's a guy honestly um recruited
- 8:41a little bit coming out at at another
- 8:42place and and so, you know, familiarity
- 8:45with them. um relationship there kind of
- 8:47as a foundation and you know he he's a
- 8:51guy that like you just mentioned he's
- 8:54trusting the process. He's he's sticking
- 8:56with right what it means to to be an
- 8:58Auburn man and play at Auburn and so you
- 9:00know excited for Joe high football IQ um
- 9:04understands you know both spots and how
- 9:07to play them and and so he's hungry for
- 9:09his opportunity.
- 9:10>> And who gets Chico's books first? Is
- 9:13that you or somebody else? because I'd
- 9:15be fighting for you.
- 9:17>> I uh asked Durk that if if I'm fighting
- 9:20because it's it's a daily
- 9:22>> it's a daily request
- 9:23>> cuz he belongs with you. Do I need to
- 9:24talk to Durk about that?
- 9:25>> Please do.
- 9:25>> Who has him right now?
- 9:27>> He's with Durk right now.
- 9:28>> Okay. Well,
- 9:29>> yeah.
- 9:29>> We'll see about that.
- 9:30>> Yeah, we'll get there.
- 9:30>> Yeah.
- 9:32>> How you doing?
- 9:32>> Good. How are you?
- 9:33>> Good. I know answer question, but just
- 9:37>> first impressions of of the group that
- 9:38you have now had a little bit of time. I
- 9:40know you haven't practiced yet,
- 9:41>> right?
- 9:42>> Yeah. I mean, I was just, you know,
- 9:43telling everybody that it's exciting to
- 9:45to get back on campus in February,
- 9:47right, and get off the road and get
- 9:48around your guys. Um, really excited
- 9:51about the room and and the versatility
- 9:53that we have. You know, we've got a
- 9:55bunch of guys that um can play both the
- 9:58buck position and the defensive end
- 9:59position. And so that um creates a lot
- 10:02of versatility for us as a as a defense.
- 10:05um you know, haven't put the pads on
- 10:07yet, haven't gone out and and truly, you
- 10:09know, played ball, but um look forward
- 10:12to to seeing what the returning guys and
- 10:14and Jared and and JJ and Joe bring, but
- 10:17but also Nate and WAC, you know, the two
- 10:20guys that we added.
- 10:21>> It'll be in your mind, it'll be a
- 10:23productive spring practice if what takes
- 10:26place.
- 10:27>> Oh man, if we just continue to to learn
- 10:29and grow and and focus, you know, each
- 10:31day on getting better. Um, you know, I
- 10:34think we've had a lot of conversations
- 10:36um, leading up to this point of, you
- 10:38know, what does each individual guy need
- 10:40to improve on? Um, and so focusing on
- 10:43those things, right? Focusing on, you
- 10:45know, process over over outcome and
- 10:48result, right? Um, so, you know, that
- 10:51that's what I'm looking forward to is
- 10:52seeing how guys respond to success, how
- 10:56they respond to to to a little bit of,
- 10:58you know, adversity.
- 11:00I have the best friend here to show the
- 11:02TV guy. Get out of here,
- 11:05>> I guess. Chris Wells, is he is he?
- 11:08>> Yeah. Yeah, he'll be coming in. No, he's
- 11:10in the summer. Yep. Yep. He's in the
- 11:11summer.
- 11:12>> Thank you very much.
- 11:13>> Yeah, absolutely.
- 11:16>> Anybody else for Coleman Hutler?
- 11:19>> Going twice. Sold. See you.
- 11:22>> Gone.
- 11:24>> You're free.
- 11:25>> How about that?
- 11:26>> He was He was so good. He didn't need to
- 11:27stay.
