Transcript
- 0:15You guys, right?
- 0:16It's Netflix week.
- 0:17It's Netflix report week for me, okay.
- 0:20And news is dropping all over the place.
- 0:24So what's the goss?
- 0:27Let me get you.
- 0:27Spill the tea.
- 0:28So it was announced that the Netflix Skydance animation partnership is going to conclude.
- 0:38So Netflix have had a partnership with Skydance Animation for a number of years.
- 0:42Skyd Animation is helmed by former Pixar exec John Lasseter.
- 0:48There has been a number of different movies that have gone straight to streaming with Netflix over the past few years.
- 0:53But obviously there's been lots of change with Skydance since that deal was done.
- 0:57So that was a deal that was from Apple.
- 1:00It was a deal with Apple at one stage that Netflix kind of went off well.
- 1:04I don't know if they went after, but it flip flopped over to Netflix which was kind of controversial at the time.
- 1:12But obviously controversials even cover like all the different changes and meanderings of Skydance since then.
- 1:18So obviously it didn't flip then flop did.
- 1:22Just flipped.
- 1:22Sorry.
- 1:23Yeah, my mistake, my mistake.
- 1:26Remind me.
- 1:27This kicked off with luck, right?
- 1:30So look was the last movie of the.
- 1:35That went to Apple.
- 1:36Yeah, so look was the last movie that went to Apple.
- 1:40And then since then there's been a number of movies that have gone to Netflix.
- 1:44The latest being swapped, which is, has done actually really, really well for Netflix.
- 1:49It hasn't done K Pop Demon Hunters.
- 1:50That's the only thing you have to caveat with like, it's not like, it's not like an absolute like yeah, nose beat of a breakout like K Pop Demon Hunters.
- 1:58But it has done very well.
- 1:59It's done actually well enough to make it into Netflix's all time top 10 movies.
- 2:03Top 10 movies.
- 2:05Where does that, where does that put it?
- 2:07Just in terms of a comparator.
- 2:09So obviously nowhere near K Pop Demon Hunters.
- 2:11But it's come in, it's come in higher than Leo, which was Netflix's previous.
- 2:16That was going to be the one I asked.
- 2:18Came in higher than the cd.
- 2:20Solid.
- 2:20Yeah, no, yeah, like, like it's, it's, it's done very well.
- 2:24So this is interesting but ultimately it all forms part of this question around cinemas, I would say.
- 2:33But ultimately also I think, you know, like obviously with everything that's going on with Paramount and Skydance and Warner, right.
- 2:39Like that's, that's going to be the lane that this is going to, that Skydance animation are going to follow.
- 2:44Because the thing is that Netflix had moved, have moved a little bit on the cinema thing.
- 2:49Obviously they've got, they've softened their stance, of course.
- 2:52Yeah, yeah, they've got Greta Gerwig's Narnia going to cinemas, but they also have Charlie vs the Chocolate Factory going to cinemas in 2027.
- 3:01Now my call was that they would start putting animated movies into cinemas before K Pop Demon hunters hits in 2029.
- 3:07Because in no world would you not put that in cinemas.
- 3:11Right.
- 3:12Like, that would just be crazy man talk.
- 3:15So.
- 3:15And Netflix are have a history of being very disciplined about when they're building a new muscle.
- 3:22They like to do it with consistency.
- 3:24And so I think it made sense for, you know, for them to look at other opportunities to theatrically release animated films, animated family movies ahead of K pop demon hunters 2.
- 3:35So yeah, it's kind of a crazy.
- 3:37It's kind of a crazy time.
- 3:39It's kind of.
- 3:40What do you think it hints at in terms of Sky Dance's future strategy then?
- 3:45I mean, ultimately the Paramount Warner entity, as it solidifies, needs a pipeline of, you know, new original animated movies and Skydance Animation sits there as the obvious choice for that.
- 3:57So it doesn't necessarily surprise me that this is happening.
- 4:03The timing is a bit interesting.
- 4:05You kind of wonder whether theatrical with Netflix was ever kind of explored.
- 4:09Obviously Netflix is a very, very strong distribution platform from a streaming point of view for the film, for lifelong films.
- 4:18And obviously Netflix is a massive streaming partner for Illumination.
- 4:22Right.
- 4:22Like constantly has all the Minions movies in there and DreamWorks will have like Shrek and the like in there too.
- 4:28So it is, it is very strong from a franchise building point of view.
- 4:33But ultimately, you know, it makes sense that Skydance Animation are looking to align more with.
- 4:39With Paramount and Warner.
- 4:40And Paramount even, even before the Warner deal is done, are very skilled and experienced folks at, you know, marketing and distributing this type of movies like that.
- 4:51So.
- 4:51So is will Swapped be the last Skydance animated movie that goes to Netflix or is there some left to run?
- 4:58There's one more.
- 4:59I've heard there's one more that's due to go next year, which is around Jack and the Beanstalk, which is kind of actually, if you think about it on a theme because Netflix are releasing another movie which is kind
- 5:12of a play on Cinderella at the end of this year.
- 5:15Steps.
- 5:17That one looks very.
- 5:18Steps.
- 5:18We know a lot more about Steps.
- 5:19Steps looks very interesting.
- 5:20It's got Amanda Seyfried as like voice talent.
- 5:24It's got Diane Radcliffe, I think was announced as the Prince.
- 5:26So, you know, it's a big one.
- 5:29It's musical as well.
- 5:32So that's hitting around kind of like that Thanksgiving time this year.
- 5:37And then next year the last Skydance movie we've heard will be, I think it's the Beanstalk movie.
- 5:42So that will be the last one to hit.
- 5:45And then obviously it's a question then of where we are at that stage in the Paramount Warner merger.
- 5:51Who knows?
- 5:52I wouldn't put any money on anything.
- 5:54You never know what's going to happen with that situation.
- 5:58Great stuff.
- 5:58Live breaking news from the kids podcast.
- 6:01Yeah.
- 6:02Yes.
- 6:03Well, it's just, I just think it's so interesting because of all the different things that are happening with Netflix, the Netflix animated pipeline.
- 6:09And it kind of felt like they were.
- 6:11There was momentum suddenly with K Pop Demon Hunters and then swapped and then potentially steps.
- 6:15If, if steps happens, like if steps, it's a big one, you know, that would be.
- 6:20I was kind of feel like two's a skirmish, three's a trend.
- 6:24But then they need to figure out what they're going to do with their long term pipeline because Skydance animation will no longer be part of it.
- 6:32They have built that capability to be fully produced by Netflix at the moment in animation.
- 6:38Animalogic based down in Australia are part of that pipeline.
- 6:41So, yeah, we'll see.
- 6:43It'll be.
- 6:44I mean they've always, they've been talking about catching Disney and doing animated movies big for years and I think, you know, maybe this.
- 6:50Yeah, they're definitely gonna have to get going with that and find something to meet that pipeline or one would hope.
- 6:57That that pipeline's in train given that, you know, as the deal fell through for Netflix to buy Paramount, that they must have seen this as a potential.
- 7:07Yes, to buy Warner.
- 7:08Yeah.
- 7:09But then it's like, I think, you know, maybe it opens the, opens the doors for things like chicken.
- 7:14If you say chicken hair.
- 7:15Yeah.
- 7:16But movies like that, like indie movies that are out there grinding their grind, doing their theatrical releases, like actually maybe gain more value in terms of what the streaming window could look like for this.
- 7:26Yeah, I can see that.
- 7:27You're right.
- 7:28Interesting.
- 7:29So there you go.
- 7:30Live reaction, guys.
