Transcript
- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for another episode of Learn French with Fexingo? Luna: Yeah, I am! Last time we did ordinal numbers from sixth to tenth, right? Lucas: Exactly. And today, we are going to go from eleventh to fifteenth. Luna: Ooh, more ordinals. I like them because they're regular. Lucas: They are. So, eleventh is 'onzième'. Let's say it together: onzième. Luna: Onzième. Lucas: Good. Twelfth is 'douzième'. Repeat: douzième. Luna: Douzième. Lucas: Thirteenth: 'treizième'. Try it. Luna: Treizième. Lucas: Fourteenth: 'quatorzième'. Luna: Quatorzième. Lucas: And fifteenth: 'quinzième'. Luna: Quinzième. That one sounds like 'quinzaine'. Lucas: Close, but 'quinzième' is ordinal, 'quinzaine' is about fifteen of something. So, picture a race. You finish eleventh: 'onzième'. Luna: Onzième. I can imagine a runner crossing the line. Lucas: Now, if you finish twelfth: 'douzième'. Luna: Douzième. That's easy to remember because 'douze' is twelve. Luna: Treizième. Got it. Lucas: Fourteenth: 'quatorzième'. Luna: Quatorzième. That one is a mouthful, but I can say it. Lucas: You can. And fifteenth: 'quinzième'. Luna: Quinzième. So, if my birthday is on the fifteenth, I say 'mon anniversaire est le quinzième'? Lucas: Yes, but careful: 'le quinzième' of what month? For example, 'le quinzième juin'. Luna: Ah, right. 'Le quinzième juin.' That's useful. Lucas: Let's practice a little scene. I'll ask you: 'Quelle est ta place dans la course?' — what place are you in the race? Luna: Hmm, I'll say 'Je suis onzième.' Lucas: Perfect. And if you were twelfth? Luna: Je suis douzième. Lucas: Excellent. Now, let's say we are talking about a birthday. 'Mon anniversaire est le treizième.' Luna: Mon anniversaire est le treizième. What month? Let's say March. Lucas: Then 'le treizième mars'. So the whole sentence: 'Mon anniversaire est le treizième mars.' Luna: Mon anniversaire est le treizième mars. That's a good pattern. Lucas: Quick honest thing — a handful of listeners chip in monthly through buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo, and that's literally what funds making this many of these episodes. Luna: Yeah, if Fexingo has been helping you with your French, it's a nice way to keep it going. No ads, just learning. Lucas: Exactly. So back to ordinals. Let's review all five from today: onzième, douzième, treizième, quatorzième, quinzième. Luna: Onzième, douzième, treizième, quatorzième, quinzième. Lucas: Great. Let's do a quick drill. I say a number, you say the ordinal. Eleven. Luna: Onzième. Lucas: Twelve. Luna: Douzième. Lucas: Thirteen. Luna: Treizième. Lucas: Fourteen. Luna: Quatorzième. Lucas: Fifteen. Luna: Quinzième. Nailed it. Lucas: You did. Now, let's put them in a sentence: 'Il habite au onzième étage.' He lives on the eleventh floor. Luna: Il habite au onzième étage. That's a real-world use. Lucas: Or 'Elle est arrivée douzième.' She arrived twelfth. Luna: Elle est arrivée douzième. I like that. Lucas: One more: 'C'est le quatorzième jour du mois.' It's the fourteenth day of the month. Luna: C'est le quatorzième jour du mois. Okay, I think I've got these. Lucas: Let's do a quick recap of everything. Onzième, douzième, treizième, quatorzième, quinzième. Luna: Onzième, douzième, treizième, quatorzième, quinzième. Lucas: Perfect. That's all for today. Keep practicing these, and next time we'll go even higher. Luna: Can't wait. See you next time! Lucas: See you! Practice these till we chat again.
