- 0:33I'm so drunk. Welcome back to a handsome,
- 0:41robot been alive, the Doctor Who commentary podcast.
- 0:46Simon heart. Yes.
- 0:47Joe fault. The most marvelous man in the
- 0:50universe, an absolute ball of sunshine and the light of my
- 0:54life. How are you doing today?
- 0:57I'm gonna be the Louisville not knowing anything about sometimes
- 1:05I do lots of preparation sometimes with a story like my
- 1:09motivation which we did last. Don't need it.
- 1:12You don't. I just knew that one off.
- 1:16This one I have no I have not watched so offer but there's
- 1:20lots of comment on the back on the screen so you actually
- 1:23getting proper commentary of what's going on.
- 1:26I shouldn't because I've noticed with a lot of these lately it's
- 1:30been less about what's going on on the screen are more about
- 1:32lots of diversion. Yes we're sometimes it is quite
- 1:36nice to actually commentate on what's going on the screen.
- 1:39However I do have a question for I have an interrogation rather
- 1:43than its current location but oh my goodness.
- 1:46This is raised. Yeah, yes.
- 1:49So I require your opinions on the question of four-part Doctor
- 1:53Who Adventure I do because we only have one to four parts in
- 2:00this season. And if you do this And I'd say
- 2:06if a better, pay serious. But on every child's, not
- 2:09exactly. Pacey, is it when we hit 100,000
- 2:12BC and but do you think the for partier is the ideal leg for a
- 2:16daunting story? It's the ideal length of classic
- 2:20Doctor Who so you don't think a two-parter is the ideal length
- 2:24of the new who I do? Like a two parts because you've
- 2:26got a bit more room to breathe. I've on the characters have a
- 2:29bit? Yes.
- 2:31Yeah, because you've got a bit more time to get to know.
- 2:33No everyone, but I think with the nature of TV.
- 2:38Now, I think you need the zip Iya one part and it's done or
- 2:42six parts, and you've got loads of room to, to get used to
- 2:46everyone as we've just had. But this I think will be
- 2:51intolerable six miles. It would be padded out a
- 2:54six-part. Yes, this would be stretched and
- 2:57that's the case with a lot of six Partners is that you can see
- 3:00that it would be a really tight four-part version of this story.
- 3:04I'm leaving on the sensor eyes know that this will be a talk to
- 3:08Papa, but I think I think in the case of the Aztecs, this is
- 3:17actually went on a PC because it's not Pacey.
- 3:20Like other attacking the side, meant not see but it it does
- 3:24have paste to it. It is the perfect story for the
- 3:29length of the story. Yeah.
- 3:32And, you know what, how many doctors are is, can you say that
- 3:35about a lot? Not brittle.
- 3:36I'm not even for every four parts of because quite often you
- 3:39get the low in episode 2 or episode Bree.
- 3:41I've got another one, you know. Okay.
- 3:43I think the I can name a story which is perfectly paced.
- 3:48Yeah. And suits for parts.
- 3:51Okay. Perfectly.
- 3:53I've just used perfectly twice daily.
- 3:56The Daleks do the Daleks works just about.
- 3:58Yeah, I think I think it has enough plot for for part.
- 4:02Yes. Pirate Planet.
- 4:04Yeah has enough plot for for parts.
- 4:07But yeah, very often like you pointed McCoy and you go well
- 4:11that needs number episode. Yes you know, most of the time
- 4:14and your partner kind of paper and say well that should never
- 4:17have existed. And something that Timeless
- 4:23which is the same length as this story and you've got a story
- 4:30where the doctor doesn't arrive in the story till what would be
- 4:33episode 2? Yeah.
- 4:36Then you've got huge padding in the Tardis at what would be the
- 4:40climax in episode 4 because it's under running.
- 4:45And it's like, nothing quite fits together.
- 4:48How it should, it should be coming in and then you get the
- 4:52false climax, don't you? Yeah.
- 4:54And let it happen again. Yeah, so yeah, it's just like
- 4:58there's, there's a story but it's just not enough incident
- 5:03where I think all regarding Zips along with enough incident to
- 5:07Paris for yes and you've got bit of action, you've got a, you've
- 5:11got some great character moments, and that particular,
- 5:15you were, Is this the episode where they go up to Barbara with
- 5:18the cup of poison? Let's say I have a drink of
- 5:21this. Yes, we we covered you in all
- 5:23humility. I have a drink of this poison.
- 5:25Yeah, Coco Joe has just presented me with a glass of
- 5:28lemonade. Oh shit.
- 5:33So if you hear a bang, that's my head's, hitting the desk at.
- 5:39I've just showed you. I should you no longer here sigh
- 5:43heart, featuring in maximum power.
- 5:45Podcast. This is why I am vital rival
- 5:50podcasters over and yeah, they never come back in person.
- 5:58So 4, 3 2 1, go as your throat. Swelling out
- 6:27episode. You know, where Charles and his
- 6:29friend are having a drink and his friend goes over my head,
- 6:32you drink wife, you've just drunk a Humble, Bundle poison,
- 6:35any five minutes, you'll be dead, and then he just goes, why
- 6:43do they do this? Why Do they re film The
- 6:46Cliffhangers in this? Because they haven't got enough
- 6:51equipment redone, the video tape and cut it in.
- 6:55It's never as effective. You know no in because I haven't
- 6:58got the week's work that the episodes worth of performance to
- 7:02get up to the Cliffhanger acting.
- 7:04Innocence was episode 1 is this fabulous slow pan across and
- 7:07then the thought the Contour of the is Right comes up the window
- 7:13in slow motion in the rear Four Eyes, the camera pane just
- 7:17saying. Yeah, this is like, yeah and
- 7:22knife-wielding. She's not having any of this.
- 7:24Is she, she is terrifying. Yeah, you know, do not cross
- 7:29Barbara, right? So tell you remember when she
- 7:32took out, sadly, forget that. Yeah, there with a gun wielding.
- 7:38She got a bloody knife to that girl's throat in the Crusades.
- 7:40Yeah. And shape.
- 7:44Dangerous. Let's see what those hats.
- 7:47Remind me off. You want sir?
- 7:49Hatt's the Clown's? Where it comes up?
- 7:53The Pet Shop Boys? In the video for go west?
- 7:58Yes, we will find our way. Is he the best villain of the
- 8:09season? That's we go.
- 8:11Got the old mother. She's quite highly y0 and you've
- 8:15got old lady. Painful Carl.
- 8:16Yeah. You got vasil.
- 8:29The second sensor, right? She's holding her arms up in
- 9:30this all this. Staggering the actor because
- 9:36this is too frightening for the kiddos.
- 9:49So I'm, they did let me talk, she's sexual, He's so sexy and,
- 10:11you know, sort of, fetish suits, taiwo cocks.
- 10:17You got a problem. All right, this is coming from
- 10:20Joe's, always fabulous. Yeah.
- 10:41Oh, is that the lights out? Now he's got you ever woken up
- 10:45by this with a man caressing? A nothing next to me.
- 10:49No they won't. Some flowers and badly paid is a
- 11:18feeling. There is a story similar to that
- 11:21with this story where they've made all the pots that are in
- 11:24the background here and given them to students to paint in as
- 11:28textile commercial. But I'm sure that's on the
- 11:31documentary, but I might be misremembering because,
- 11:36obviously, I haven't done any research.
- 11:39So I've got a question for you, Joe
- 12:11Richard Martin all the time. Is it Frank cocks?
- 12:15It does since rights? Yes.
- 12:17Frank clocks and Mervyn pinfield.
- 12:18Yeah. Cox doesn't episode of.
- 12:21Yeah, of edge of Destruction as well.
- 12:23Pinfield does space museum. Yeah, give me sensor has a
- 12:27camera since Horizon and Space Museum, what cvag has no.
- 12:33Okay, so should anybody know anything about John Crockett.
- 12:38Yes, I'm tweet us at Because it's yeah, it's nicely done.
- 12:56Yeah. Convince him to poison Barbara.
- 13:01This is like an episode of The West Wing.
- 13:07Exactly. Yeah.
- 13:11If Isis action, right? And it's the drama coming out
- 13:15with the characters. This is exactly how these
- 13:17characters would have got through and what they would have
- 13:21done at the time. Well, the trouble is is with
- 13:23Barbara there. She's she has, you know, taking
- 13:28power from energy, yes, essentially in charge of this
- 13:31entire Society. So so his motive is believable.
- 13:36Yes. one thing that the story does quite well and in quite a
- 13:43progressive way, come on in these woke days is that your
- 13:49taxes are was a male God who is reincarnated as a woman and it
- 13:56is not Offensive team commented on the other than saying, how
- 14:01dare you make a suggestion. All right, and I'll male
- 14:05character turning into a female's actually get outraged
- 14:09for that in any other civilization.
- 14:12I'll get me the side. Get me the thumb in the mirror,
- 14:16who was doing that, right? At the very beginning.
- 14:19That's it. I need to do a nerd rustic
- 14:21Style. YouTube video 11 hours at least
- 14:29Yes no but you're right. You're a yeah, it's fabulous.
- 14:34It's really. Yeah.
- 14:35And he could have been here. They could have given that
- 14:37wrong. Yes, exactly.
- 14:38But they give it and you see Barbara when Barbara takes the
- 14:41bracelet at the start and puts it on that leaks.
- 14:45Everything, that happens in this story.
- 14:47Otherwise they would probably have all been killed straight
- 14:50away. Oh my God.
- 14:51Look at how. How quetta SLI that's a big
- 14:55word? Again, it is.
- 14:58How could catch actually she dropped those cocoa beans and I
- 15:01were on his face. And it's a huge close-up of him.
- 15:33It's very funny. I'm looking
- 15:49between Well, the best of this story, there's just a warm.
- 16:01Yeah, it's just a little bit of heart and at this point, the
- 16:05doctor isn't an asexual character, traveling the
- 16:10universe, he's got the same feelings and I mean, it would
- 16:16have been even funnier. That would be truly Progressive
- 16:23in dogs. Always practical.
- 17:01He is. You're always practical.
- 17:05She was going to say that. He he's like she's kind of like
- 17:08the emotional one. Yeah.
- 17:09And he's quite possible. Yeah, and he's sensible.
- 17:16Like I don't care what William Russell says, they got married.
- 17:21They certainly did, didn't I see?
- 17:23Davis has confirmed it. Yeah, you watched of a sort of
- 17:28Roman safety flowers. Oh, there's so now.
- 17:46Put overhead because she was so drunk.
- 17:49She looks like, oh, yeah, that one.
- 17:55Is that historical? They're all good Marco Polo's.
- 17:59Get my compose really great. Isn't it?
- 18:02You said all the Crusader is fun?
- 18:08I remember watching that when it was repeated in 1992 and
- 18:12thinking of this is very But it's one that grows on You,
- 18:18Through The Years. How are you?
- 18:22Look at this. This is your friendship.
- 18:26Never invites around for dinner. Have a fullness here where she's
- 18:30like, I am not yet except she's brilliant.
- 18:35Yes. Little bit was really nice.
- 18:37Most of that bit in case of fairness with their filthy rags.
- 18:44She could do, All of these about she could do the anger, she
- 18:48could do anything. Stupid old man.
- 18:53Don't you realize you would have died in the dark city of Ian
- 18:55doesn't know how to no. No.
- 18:58And what about probably went up to against the darks.
- 19:01She's terrific. Oh God, I don't know.
- 19:06This make me popular. I think she's probably the
- 19:08strongest of the in-sample ivory could probably write actually.
- 19:12And she was a good friend of verity lamb.
- 19:14Yeah. And she did it as a favor to her
- 19:17and I do wonder what she said that the judge.
- 19:19And then she said, when she started, she's so many great.
- 19:22And yeah, like she really started to enjoy it.
- 19:25I'm wondering. If very Lambert said.
- 19:27Let's give her a strong role. It just comes from David,
- 19:32Whittaker, working on the characters.
- 19:34And making them all as strong as they possibly can be.
- 19:41This is a marvelous way to get engaged.
- 19:43Yeah, that's a lot of. Yeah, Coco's.
- 19:45And the effort you've got a gap. Share a nice warming.
- 19:52Yeah. You've had your TGI Friday.
- 19:56You had a nice Friday on out and just say it, right?
- 20:01Two cups of cocoa. Take me to the Ritz-Carlton if
- 20:15you want to get engaged to me. Mostly I'm going now, okay?
- 20:34Good. This looks to look at on the
- 20:36sense. Lots of just details, then
- 20:39they're very New Breed really, really good is Nathan.
- 20:44Bottomley of fly for entirety. Yes, I'm always stresses to me.
- 20:50The vision in television is very important and I was just say,
- 20:55well, it doesn't really matter, you know, like those made in the
- 20:57budget and what it looks like doesn't matter as long as it's
- 21:00entertaining and its intellectual.
- 21:03Actually, I think he's right if there's a level of visual
- 21:06sumptuousness. It's almost a distraction, isn't
- 21:10it? Yeah.
- 21:11And I think a lot of modern-day TV uses that distraction because
- 21:15a lot because it is a great. Let the scriptures not as
- 21:18clever. Yeah well they just churning out
- 21:20team meetings. Yes.
- 21:20All right. So I'm not saying you know shit
- 21:24I think they've got better at making television.
- 21:26So yes I'm a good standard all the sign now but I think is the
- 21:33most visually stunning classic Who stories.
- 21:40Some of them are historical ones.
- 21:43Yes, I would have been one of his with my black Wolcott.
- 21:46Yeah. Which has all pretty lousy
- 21:48script, but looks beautiful go slow, which is a very confusing
- 21:52to put. Yeah, it looks, but it's for,
- 21:54and again, that's like this, this is all in all in the studio
- 21:58story but it is really well done.
- 22:03Sometimes. And I think probably the better
- 22:06stories combined that visual sub justness with what a terrific
- 22:12script. Yes.
- 22:13I'm going to point out a story. You don't like now.
- 22:16Okay. Say revelation of the Dale.
- 22:18Yeah. Can you find it?
- 22:23I was just about to say primitive also, then I
- 22:25remembered the pyramids. Oh yeah.
- 22:27I know. Yeah.
- 22:27Those those are not great sex. Okay, I'm gonna be look at this
- 22:33time is a great script and a great.
- 22:37Yes. But if you look at the stories
- 22:43where you haven't got a great script and you haven't got or
- 22:47you've got a great script asset Again, full script Whole sets
- 22:53and the whole thing between the Lemma.
- 22:55Yeah, end-of-season, no money just looks tinfoil covered
- 23:00consoles. And what is that when people
- 23:02talk to who, when you have a fantastic script and a great
- 23:05production lifetime of their army, what's that?
- 23:09Is a great production, it's great script.
- 23:12Yeah, well, Pari dangers is the words.
- 23:16So yeah. But if you can get something
- 23:19like this, where you've got to stop perfect mesh.
- 23:21Yeah, for something that was meant to be broadcast once and
- 23:24probably never seen again, maybe seen in a couple of countries
- 23:29around the world, but that wasn't a big.
- 23:31Big thing at the time. How do you think William
- 23:34Hartnell would feel? Yeah, if he was told we're
- 23:37making this in what 1964 that? Joe Fallen.
- 23:42Silent heart in 2021. We'll be sitting down and doing
- 23:48a commentary about your performance, her story like what
- 23:52the kid just look at us. Like we were completely insane
- 23:56and say you're a pair of gays. You have that as anyone because
- 24:37sometimes you just forget how much he set up Doctor, Who and
- 24:45you concentrate on trout and coming in because he's done the
- 24:47difficult being of being the first new Doctor Who.
- 24:51Yeah, or being the second Doctor Who, whereas Hartnell is just up
- 24:55to whom he is just the doctor, there's no inkling until the
- 25:0110th Planet, pulp. All that there is any chance
- 25:04that this character Could be anyone else?
- 25:07It's just the doctor is. Yeah.
- 25:09And he creates that he created that character is the governor.
- 25:14Yeah. Can you say about trout?
- 25:15And having a hard roll of hang on to that, I do agree with
- 25:18that. I do think he did things.
- 25:20I actually think it's undersold, the difficult task that / we had
- 25:26will because the show was on the skittish.
- 25:29Yeah. And for him to take, hold of it
- 25:32and to make it such a success like yeah.
- 25:36Give it its second big flush of success after the Daleks in
- 25:42Serie A season two. I mean, the rains were fairly
- 25:46good in season 1 season so it just Rockets as soon as you get
- 25:50the Dalek invasion of Earth, its Sky High.
- 25:54Yeah, it's sad though because you get to wear planet and that
- 25:58hits the massive high of like 13.5 million on episode 1 and
- 26:02then it just goes down there. But but like you mean It's still
- 26:06pretty good at the raisin rest. Yeah, but it's never quite that
- 26:09high. Again.
- 26:10I think enough people tuned into that.
- 26:11Wait what it is honestly. Congratulations.
- 26:22It's a couple of stories earlier.
- 26:23They were literally at each other's necks.
- 26:25Yes, If you didn't hear that kind of
- 26:39message each other. Welcome back to Joe's legs.
- 27:05I'm just putting the subtitles on nowadays.
- 27:35Right. Yeah, I'll take Kitty sickness
- 27:37and that's just to watch an episode of Discovery.
- 27:40I like this sort of language camera work where it's also
- 27:46what's wrong with a though. It stop it tells the story
- 27:49perfectly adequately but like if the camera was when they did
- 27:52their reign of terror animation and it was always like
- 27:58Tarantino. So it it's mouth.
- 28:20You know them? Yeah.
- 28:35Is no yes. Thank right.
- 28:37Other tricks. Many pajamas in one of those
- 28:40books. Okay, here it's like commentary
- 28:44tonight Russell doing good? Yeah, bestowed, a clean when
- 28:51it's very expensive. You think week is lit up
- 29:05beautifully? Done any exterior filming for
- 29:12Doctor? Who at all at this point, it
- 29:15doesn't Paris. Yeah.
- 29:25I mean, this is like, in a way, this is a dry run for
- 29:28Battlefield episode 2 minutes. You just can't convince her
- 30:05something that light is really night.
- 30:09And when it slides in as well you're here is polystyrene even
- 30:13State. What's the difference of does is
- 30:15try to bump me up? oh, Come on, Ian.
- 30:23But this is good because this is this is where he comes out in
- 30:27the to McGinnis and yes and gives them access and then the
- 30:31only thing stopping of leaving absurd for if they need to get
- 30:34Susan away. Yes.
- 30:37So yeah, it's like that episode of Marco Polo again same right
- 30:44to where the episode ends with the almost all getting into the
- 30:49Tardis but Susie gets captured at the end and they're so close.
- 30:53You know, I bet that there's water Marco Polo.
- 31:02I'm for it. Can you imagine if this was just
- 31:04telling us that excited, we could only see You like because
- 31:07it is so beautiful to look at. I've been would still lose
- 31:11something with me. There would be there would
- 31:14probably be moments that were missed.
- 31:16I think this is the thing with the Telly snaps is that sometime
- 31:19we haven't got certain key moments.
- 31:24We're incredibly lucky to have the Telus app and the
- 31:27Reconstruction, and the animation.
- 31:30Yeah, and we'll just the same tracks, even it's just amazing.
- 31:33You lose something from. Not seeing the new ones.
- 31:36In the perform. Yes.
- 31:37And I find less. So when I wash Galaxy forward
- 31:41Hannah which is more trout and he's just always doing stuff
- 31:44with his face. Yes it isn't there in the and
- 31:46she's always doing something that you don't expect him to be
- 31:49doing nothing. Yeah.
