- 0:04Randy Black. Randy Black. Randy Black. Randy Black. Randy Black. Randy Black. Randy Black. He's a troublemaker. Welcome back to Randy Unscripted,
- 0:12and I'm Randy Black. This is another episode in our napod promo twenty twenty five series with the goal of producing a podcast episode for National Podcast Post Month
- 0:22every day in the month of November.
- 0:25This is the twenty seventh episode in that series on our goal of 30 episodes in thirty days. We're almost there. The end is in sight.
- 0:36More importantly, today
- 0:38is Thanksgiving.
- 0:40Happy Thanksgiving.
- 0:42Today's the day.
- 0:43After walking through the history, the tradition,
- 0:46the civic virtue, and the voices that shape American gratitude,
- 0:51we arrive at the heart of it all,
- 0:54the spiritual meaning
- 0:56of thanksgiving.
- 0:58For believers, thanksgiving isn't just a holiday on the calendar.
- 1:02It's a command,
- 1:03a posture,
- 1:04and a way of life.
- 1:06And on a day when the nation pauses to give thanks, it's worth taking a moment to anchor ourselves not only in Turkey and traditions,
- 1:14but in what Scripture
- 1:16actually teaches
- 1:17about gratitude.
- 1:19So today,
- 1:21we're going to look at the spiritual foundations of thanksgiving through God's word and hopefully rediscover why giving thanks is not just good for us,
- 1:30but essential
- 1:31to a life of faith.
- 1:36The Bible
- 1:37doesn't treat gratitude
- 1:39as an optional spiritual practice.
- 1:42Psalms 100 verse four says,
- 1:45Enter into his gates with thanksgiving
- 1:48and into his courts with praise.
- 1:50Be thankful unto him and bless his name.
- 1:54And first Thessalonians five eighteen tells us plainly,
- 1:58in everything give thanks
- 2:00for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
- 2:04God doesn't tell us to be thankful because everything in life is good.
- 2:09He tells us to be thankful
- 2:11because
- 2:12He is good.
- 2:15Thanksgiving is an act of trust.
- 2:18It's a declaration of faith,
- 2:20and it's a reminder that God's sovereignty is bigger than our own circumstances.
- 2:27When we give thanks, something happens inside us.
- 2:32Our focus shifts from what we lack to what God has given,
- 2:36from fear to trust,
- 2:39from anxiety
- 2:40to peace,
- 2:42from self sufficiency
- 2:45to dependence
- 2:46on him.
- 2:49Philippians chapter four verses six and seven
- 2:52gives a beautiful promise to us.
- 2:55Be careful for nothing,
- 2:57but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known
- 3:03unto God,
- 3:04and the peace of God, which passeth all understanding,
- 3:08shall keep your hearts and minds through Jesus Christ.
- 3:12Thanksgiving doesn't just acknowledge blessings.
- 3:16It reorients
- 3:17our
- 3:18entire
- 3:19spiritual center.
- 3:20It pulls us back into alignment with God
- 3:24who holds all things together.
- 3:29Throughout Scripture,
- 3:30God calls His people to remember,
- 3:32to look back,
- 3:34to tell the stories again.
- 3:37In Deuteronomy,
- 3:38in the Psalms,
- 3:39in the prophets,
- 3:41the people of God are instructed to rehearse his goodness so they won't forget it.
- 3:47Psalms one zero three verse two says,
- 3:50bless the Lord,
- 3:52oh my soul,
- 3:53and forget not all his benefits.
- 3:58Thanksgiving
- 3:59at its core
- 4:00is a spiritual discipline of remembering.
- 4:04Remembering that God has saved us,
- 4:08that God has sustained us,
- 4:11that God has provided for us,
- 4:15that God has walked with us through trials,
- 4:19and
- 4:20that God has not failed us.
- 4:23When we give thanks today,
- 4:25we're not just remembering the last twelve months.
- 4:29We're remembering his faithfulness through all the years that are behind us.
- 4:37Thanksgiving is easy when life is easy.
- 4:41It becomes powerful
- 4:42when life is not.
- 4:45Some of you listening today are carrying grief and loss,
- 4:48anxiety,
- 4:50broken relationships,
- 4:51financial strain, or uncertainty about the future.
- 4:56Thanksgiving might feel harder than usual this year.
- 5:01Scripture
- 5:02does not ignore suffering.
- 5:04It speaks right into it.
- 5:07Psalm 3four 18 says, The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart and saveth such
- 5:14as be of a contrite spirit.
- 5:19Gratitude and suffering is not pretending everything is fine.
- 5:23It is declaring that God is still faithful
- 5:26even here.
- 5:28The earliest Thanksgivings
- 5:29in American history were born out of hardship,
- 5:33harsh winters, scarcity, loss, war, and rebuilding,
- 5:37and yet
- 5:38through tears and trials,
- 5:40people gave thanks.
- 5:43In that way,
- 5:45the holiday mirrors the spiritual life. Sometimes Thanksgiving is whispered through pain,
- 5:50but is still heard by God.
- 5:55Biblical Thanksgiving
- 5:57always leads
- 5:58somewhere.
- 5:59It produces fruit like generosity,
- 6:03compassion,
- 6:04hospitality,
- 6:05worship, and joyful obedience.
- 6:09Psalms one zero seven verse 22 says, and let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving and declare his works with rejoicing.
- 6:19Thankfulness isn't quiet.
- 6:22It overflows.
- 6:24It moves outward into how we treat others.
- 6:28So on this Thanksgiving Day, maybe the most meaningful act of gratitude
- 6:32isn't just what you say,
- 6:34it's what you do.
- 6:37You know, a phone call to someone who's lonely,
- 6:41a kind word spoken
- 6:42across the family table,
- 6:45a moment of forgiveness,
- 6:48a shared meal with someone in need, or a renewed commitment
- 6:52to walk closer with God.
- 6:56Gratitude becomes
- 6:57most powerful
- 6:59when it becomes visible.
- 7:03Before we close, I want to take just a moment and invite you wherever you're listening to pause with me.
- 7:11Think
- 7:12of
- 7:13one thing
- 7:14God has done for you this year.
- 7:17One moment of grace,
- 7:20one prayer answered or
- 7:22or even one prayer still unanswered
- 7:24but held in hope.
- 7:28And here are the words of Psalm
- 7:30one thirty six verse one,
- 7:33Oh, give thanks unto the Lord for He is good,
- 7:36for His mercy endureth forever.
- 7:40That verse carried Israel through generations,
- 7:43and it can still carry us too.
- 7:48As we celebrate this day,
- 7:50may we remember that Thanksgiving is not about perfection,
- 7:54it's about perspective.
- 7:56Not about abundance,
- 7:58but about awareness.
- 8:00It's not about what's on the table,
- 8:03but who sets
- 8:05on the throne in heaven.
- 8:08May your home be filled with gratitude,
- 8:11and may your heart be filled with peace,
- 8:13and may your day be filled with reminders of the goodness
- 8:17of God above.
- 8:19Happy Thanksgiving,
- 8:21and thank you for joining me on today's episode of Randy Unscripted
- 8:25as we continue this journey walking through napod promo,
- 8:29national podcast post month, with the goal of producing 30 episodes in thirty days. I hope you'll come back tomorrow.
- 8:37I'm Randy, and this has been Randy Unscripted.
