Orkney: Cruise Crowds, Ferry Timings & Who Should Skip It
🌍 Orkney took 213,785 cruise passengers in 2024 against 21,920 residents — nearly ten per resident, squeezed into April to October. The council's own draft Visitor Management Plan, published 21 September 2026 and out for consultation until 16 October, concedes that volumes "exceed what these locations were designed to accommodate" and that buses run "at or beyond capacity on busy cruise days". But the cap everyone says Orkney imposed does not exist: the 2023 "category sum of 5" is a berth rule at two locations, and calls have gone 204, 232, 184 and 208 booked for 2026.
