Latest / Connor with Honor: AI, Real Estate and Real Life / The CEO Building Superintelligence Handed Off Safety. I'm a Christian Who Builds AI. Here's What I See.
Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Sam Altman just handed off safety overnight at OpenAI so he could focus on building data centers and raising money.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: I want that to sit with you just for a moment.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: The man building what he claims will be superintelligence just told the world that safety is not his primary focus.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: Infrastructure is.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: Capital is, and of course, scale is.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: Bigger is better.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: And I think about that through the lens of my faith.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: But because when human beings build towers, they have a tendency to forget why we started building in the first place.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: Genesis chapter 11, the Tower of Babel.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: They said, Let us build ourselves a city and a tower whose top is in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Make a name for ourselves, they said.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Not for God, but for ourselves.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: He came down because it was never going to reach him.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: And I'm not comparing Sam Altman to the builders of Babel, but I am saying that the pattern is worth recognizing.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: When the goal shifts from solving problems to building monuments, the project changes.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: When safety becomes someone else's job, the values have already shifted.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: And when the entire industry is racing to build something they openly describe as more powerful than human intelligence, we should ask who is steering and where they're going.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Here's what happened this week that I can't stop thinking about.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: An AI system designed new polymers, materials that had never existed before.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: And when scientists tested them, they were four times tougher than anyone had predicted.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Then AI discovered a quantum mechanical effect that surprised even the researchers that built the system.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: The creation of the creation surprised its creators.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Let that land.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: A tool that we built found something in the structure of the physical universe that we did not know was there.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: That is not the machine playing God.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: That is the machine under cover uncovering what God already put in place.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: The laws of physics were there before AI found them.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: The quantum effects were there before AI measured them.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: The strength in those polymers existed in potential since the foundation of the world.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: AI didn't create the truth, it found it.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: And that's the distinction that matters for everybody watching who carries a certain faith.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: Because the question isn't what not it's not whether AI can discover things, it clearly can.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: The question is who put those things there to be discovered.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: James 117.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: No variation, no shadow.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: The law of physics did not shift.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: The quantum effects do not waver.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: The truth embedded in the structure of creation is constant because the one who embedded it is also constant.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: AI is a flashlight, an extraordinary flashlight, of course, but the room was already built.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: The furniture was already placed.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: The flashlight didn't create the room, it just showed us what was in it.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: Now here's where I want to be very clear about something.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Christianity is not a religion, it's a relationship.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: I don't work for God's approval.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: I can't earn it.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: Jesus picked up the tab, and I can't even leave the tip.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: That's the gospel in one sentence.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: Grace, not performance, not effort, not religiosity.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: It's grace.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: And from the position of grace, I can look at AI without fear.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: I can look at longevity research without anxiety.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: I can look at superintelligence without losing my footing.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: Because my footing is not in the technology, my footing is in the one who made the minds that made the technology.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: There are groups that call themselves Christian who alter the text.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: They create a different Jesus, the created being rather than the eternal son.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: And they add works to grace.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: They send missionaries to knock on doors and climb ladders trying to earn what's already given.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: I do not slam them, but I recognize the distinction because the distinction matters.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: The Jesus of biblical Christianity is not one path of many.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: He's the only path.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: It is exclusive.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: That's not arrogance.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: That's the claim he made about himself, John 14, 6.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: I'm the way, the truth, and the life.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: No one comes to the Father except through me.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: He didn't say I am a way.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: He said, I am the way.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: And either it's true or it's not.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: I believe it is.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: And from that belief I engage with every person, every technology, every challenge with the same posture.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: Not above anyone, not against anyone, alongside everyone.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: My faith makes me strong.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: All him, not me.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: And it never ever changes how I serve the person standing in front of me, whether they share my faith or they think I'm out of my mind.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: The service is still the same.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: God is not the machine.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: God is not in the machine.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: God made the people who made the machine.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: And he's watching with great interest as we figure out what to do with it.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: Use it well, use it wisely, and never ever forget where real intelligence comes from.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: I'll see you tomorrow.
