- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast presented
- 0:16Speaker 1: by on X. This is episode three seventy seven. This
- 0:20Speaker 1: is rot Fresh Radio, but this is not Mark Kenyon. Instead,
- 0:25Speaker 1: you're stuck with just me this week, Spencer new Hearth.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Mark and I were not able to hop on the
- 0:31Speaker 1: computers and record an intro this week because yesterday October six,
- 0:37Speaker 1: I killed a book in Wyoming and dealt with that
- 0:39Speaker 1: for most of the day. And today October seven, Uh,
- 0:44Speaker 1: I'm not gonna give you all the details, but I'll
- 0:46Speaker 1: tell you that a buck was killed on the back
- 0:49Speaker 1: forty So you're gonna have to tune into future episodes
- 0:52Speaker 1: and check out Mark social to see exactly what happened. Now,
- 0:56Speaker 1: the last time we talked, I told Mark I was
- 0:58Speaker 1: on my way to Wyoming. I'd be there for five
- 1:01Speaker 1: days and I was looking for a mule deer or
- 1:03Speaker 1: a white tail on public land. And as Mark would say,
- 1:07Speaker 1: I'm going to give you a cliff notes version of
- 1:10Speaker 1: what happened in the Cowboys State. The first couple of
- 1:13Speaker 1: days there, I was looking for a mule deer, and
- 1:15Speaker 1: I was really struggling to do so. Um, what I
- 1:18Speaker 1: didn't know about this part of the state that I
- 1:20Speaker 1: was going to is that it was wildly dry. There
- 1:23Speaker 1: were often times where I was glass in an area,
- 1:26Speaker 1: and uh, I had this realization that there was more
- 1:29Speaker 1: water in my backpack than there was for like a
- 1:32Speaker 1: mile in any direction. And why that's important when it
- 1:36Speaker 1: comes to me feeling my white tail tag is that
- 1:38Speaker 1: I realized the green food sources are also where you'd
- 1:42Speaker 1: find water, which is also where you'd find deer. And
- 1:44Speaker 1: it's also very telling that that area has a high
- 1:48Speaker 1: prevalence of c w D because despite it being big country,
- 1:53Speaker 1: most of the deer are just stacked on top of
- 1:55Speaker 1: each other and focused on these green food sources. When
- 1:59Speaker 1: I had switched gears and started looking for white tails,
- 2:02Speaker 1: then I went and looked for pieces of private ground
- 2:05Speaker 1: that would have the ideal food that were someplace near
- 2:09Speaker 1: public where I could intercept these white tails going to
- 2:12Speaker 1: feed in this big egg And ultimately that was the
- 2:16Speaker 1: difference maker between me killing a deer and not killing
- 2:19Speaker 1: a deer. Um. Although I was hunting public ground, I
- 2:22Speaker 1: had the benefit of accessing it through this private which
- 2:25Speaker 1: left behind basically hunters that would ever be on that property.
- 2:31Speaker 1: When it comes to the actual killing of the deer, um,
- 2:33Speaker 1: when I found while I was there is that the
- 2:36Speaker 1: deer were quite predictable. They were sort of on patterns
- 2:39Speaker 1: that you would expect to see in like mid to
- 2:42Speaker 1: late September. So the buck that I ended up killing,
- 2:44Speaker 1: which is a five by five that you can go
- 2:46Speaker 1: see on my Instagram at Spencer New Hearth, he was
- 2:50Speaker 1: a deer that I had seen Monday morning and then
- 2:53Speaker 1: I had seen Monday night. Um and using that information,
- 2:57Speaker 1: I went to the area where he was entering this
- 2:59Speaker 1: field that morning and that evening, and I ended up
- 3:02Speaker 1: killing him on Tuesday morning. If you recall on last
- 3:05Speaker 1: week's episode, Mark and I talked about how killing a
- 3:08Speaker 1: deer this time of year, so much of it comes
- 3:11Speaker 1: down to being aggressive and really weighing that risk versus
- 3:14Speaker 1: reward factor between bumping a book and not seeing him
- 3:18Speaker 1: for another three weeks and killing a buck. Now, for me,
- 3:22Speaker 1: I didn't have much of a choice but to be aggressive.
- 3:25Speaker 1: This was public land. This was the last day of
- 3:28Speaker 1: the haunt, on a trip that I had already extended
- 3:30Speaker 1: by a day. Because I thought I might be able
- 3:32Speaker 1: to get it done. Um So when you're weighing those factors,
- 3:36Speaker 1: you're out of state public ground. Final day, I was
- 3:39Speaker 1: more aggressive than I typically would be on October six,
- 3:43Speaker 1: and that's how I killed this white tail. So that's
- 3:45Speaker 1: the theme that you're gonna hear in this week's episode
- 3:47Speaker 1: and future episodes of rod Fresh Radio as we get
- 3:51Speaker 1: into what most hunters consider the law. Now this week,
- 3:54Speaker 1: we're gonna talk to Adam Bold's in Indiana, Kyler Mopper
- 3:58Speaker 1: in Louisiana, just In Michelle in New York, and Clifford
- 4:02Speaker 1: Martin in Iowa. If you take anything away from this
- 4:05Speaker 1: week's episode of rout Fresh Radio, I wanted to be
- 4:07Speaker 1: something that Mark and I have covered in a few
- 4:10Speaker 1: seasons in the past, and it's that if you think
- 4:13Speaker 1: about buck movement as a line graph, it's going to
- 4:17Speaker 1: start to increase in like early September, and then it's
- 4:21Speaker 1: going to peek around early to mid November, and then
- 4:25Speaker 1: it's going to start to decrease after that. Now, that's
- 4:27Speaker 1: a very rudimentary way to think about how bucks are
- 4:31Speaker 1: moving in daylight, but within that rise and fall, you
- 4:36Speaker 1: also have these little ebbs and flows of more movement
- 4:40Speaker 1: and less movement. What I think we're at right now
- 4:43Speaker 1: is these last like five days, we had more movement
- 4:47Speaker 1: and so that line graph would be up, uh, and
- 4:50Speaker 1: we're currently leveling out now, coming back down to what
- 4:53Speaker 1: you'd expect to see this time of year. So while
- 4:56Speaker 1: the hunters that we talked to you this week um
- 4:59Speaker 1: sound pretty pestimistic, just know that it's going to swing
- 5:01Speaker 1: the other way and things are going to get better,
- 5:04Speaker 1: but that this next week or so is going to
- 5:06Speaker 1: be a difficult time to kill a mature white tail.
- 5:10Speaker 1: It can still absolutely be done, although the hunting was
- 5:13Speaker 1: probably better five days ago and it's going to be
- 5:15Speaker 1: better again in ten days or so. But that's enough
- 5:18Speaker 1: for me for this week. Let's get to our first
- 5:20Speaker 1: interview alright, and joining us on the line next is
- 5:25Speaker 1: Adam Bolds from Hunt the Wild Now Adam in Indiana?
- 5:28Speaker 1: What would you say the buck activity is ben lately?
- 5:30Speaker 1: On the scale of one to ten, I would say
- 5:34Speaker 1: about as five. I'm gonna go to the mid level.
- 5:37Speaker 1: I think a lot of it has to do with
- 5:39Speaker 1: the weather right now. As far as buck activity during
- 5:44Speaker 1: the nighttime hours, it's tire, But like during the day,
- 5:48Speaker 1: hunting hours, last light, anything like that. It's just gosh,
- 5:52Speaker 1: the weather, it's just been a killer ninety degrees constant. Yeah,
- 5:57Speaker 1: just looking for a cold front. As a public land hunter,
- 6:01Speaker 1: what are you looking for when you go in in
- 6:03Speaker 1: early to mid October when you're trying to kill a
- 6:06Speaker 1: buck early to mid October, I'm usually looking for all
- 6:12Speaker 1: around here public lands a little bit smaller, so we
- 6:15Speaker 1: kind of hunt corn field, bean field stuff like that. Um,
- 6:19Speaker 1: there's a couple areas around here that are a little bigger,
- 6:22Speaker 1: so I'll try to get on, you know, a corns
- 6:25Speaker 1: or something, uh for simmon, something of that nature. But
- 6:30Speaker 1: mostly I'd say it's it's gonna be crop fields and
- 6:34Speaker 1: some of them are starting to come out now, so
- 6:35Speaker 1: it's working in our favor. How did things change for
- 6:38Speaker 1: you when those crops start to come out? Oh? Man, Uh,
- 6:42Speaker 1: it's usually good for about the first week. There's usually
- 6:45Speaker 1: a lot of deer out on the field. And then, um,
- 6:49Speaker 1: if you're not a running gun hunter, I mean, if
- 6:51Speaker 1: you just gotta set up staying on that field. Um.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Usually she usually just kind of luck or or something
- 6:59Speaker 1: like that until the it I mean, you got to
- 7:00Speaker 1: get get back in the woods, I think because they
- 7:02Speaker 1: started hitting acorns and seven around here. Are you seeing
- 7:06Speaker 1: any signmaking yet in Indiana? Uh? Not as much as normal. Actually,
- 7:12Speaker 1: I've seen a few rubs, um, but that's really about it.
- 7:16Speaker 1: I haven't haven't stumbled on any any scrapes. Um. Yeah,
- 7:23Speaker 1: it's the crops are coming out a little bit earlier,
- 7:27Speaker 1: it seems like. But for some reason I'm not seeing
- 7:30Speaker 1: all the normal sign that I see, which is kind
- 7:32Speaker 1: of weird. It could be weather related this time of year.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Are you doing any morning setups? Yeah? Yeah, I actually
- 7:42Speaker 1: killed killed a doe see two two or three weekends ago.
- 7:47Speaker 1: It was morning, early early morning, about seven o eight
- 7:50Speaker 1: in the morning. Um. And that evening there was I
- 7:54Speaker 1: was actually hunting in a different area, but I had
- 7:58Speaker 1: on camera out evening. A couple of smaller bucks came through,
- 8:03Speaker 1: um pretty early. But I said, mature bucks are still
- 8:09Speaker 1: They're still staying pretty nocturnal for the most part. So
- 8:12Speaker 1: what does a morning set up look like for you?
- 8:14Speaker 1: In mid October? A morning setup is usually on some
- 8:19Speaker 1: toin of food source, pretty far away. Um. Sometimes if
- 8:23Speaker 1: you can get away from other hunters, umn't really high
- 8:26Speaker 1: up twenty Usually hunt about twenty ft because it feels
- 8:31Speaker 1: safer that way. Smell and everything. But yeah, I mean
- 8:34Speaker 1: I go in quiet. I very rarely will use a light.
- 8:38Speaker 1: UM use a red light. So yeah, food source and
- 8:41Speaker 1: sit tight. I try to sit tight as as long
- 8:44Speaker 1: as I can because those deer can come through ten
- 8:46Speaker 1: eleven o'clock even going forward. Then, in the next week
- 8:49Speaker 1: or so, what do you think that bucket activity is
- 8:51Speaker 1: going to be on a scale of one to ten
- 8:53Speaker 1: in Indiana. I think it's gonna probably about a seven. Okay,
- 8:57Speaker 1: So it's really hot right now. It's gonna rain all
- 9:00Speaker 1: weekend into the middle or beginning Monday Tuesday of next week. Um,
- 9:06Speaker 1: then the temperature is gonna draw up a little bit,
- 9:08Speaker 1: not a whole lot. And then as we get into
- 9:11Speaker 1: like next weekend, um, a cold front is gonna hit.
- 9:15Speaker 1: And I I know how those cold fronts are. I
- 9:18Speaker 1: get the deer moving so um by by next weekend,
- 9:23Speaker 1: you better be in the woods if you if you
- 9:26Speaker 1: front in Indiana, because they're gonna be on their feet.
- 9:28Speaker 1: All right, Adam would like your optimism, good luck with
- 9:31Speaker 1: your haunts, and thanks for joining me. Yeah, thank you
- 9:34Speaker 1: all right and joining us on the line. Next is
- 9:36Speaker 1: Kyler Moppert from Louisiana. Bow Hunter in Louisiana, Now Kyler
- 9:40Speaker 1: in Louisiana, what would you say the buck activity has
- 9:43Speaker 1: been lately on a scale of one to ten scale
- 9:47Speaker 1: one to ten, I would put it so far this
- 9:49Speaker 1: season about an eight uh. And you know, we've had
- 9:52Speaker 1: a really interesting season so far. We typically don't have
- 9:57Speaker 1: as cool a weather as we've had. Open Day and
- 10:00Speaker 1: opening weekend. We're in the high forties, low fifties on
- 10:04Speaker 1: Thursday and Friday, and um that I think got a
- 10:08Speaker 1: lot of bucks on their feet. And not only that,
- 10:10Speaker 1: but the most interesting part was a lot of them
- 10:14Speaker 1: were in velvet. We're getting a lot of velvet pictures,
- 10:16Speaker 1: which is really unusual for us. A lot of times
- 10:19Speaker 1: deer would have lost all their velvet by now. But
- 10:22Speaker 1: I've probably got fifteen or twenty velvet pictures of not
- 10:26Speaker 1: very nice bucks that were killed last week. Now, Louisiana
- 10:29Speaker 1: has one of the stranger white tail herds in the country,
- 10:32Speaker 1: with biological clocks that are all over the map. So
- 10:35Speaker 1: can you walk us through what hunters should be expecting
- 10:38Speaker 1: for rut timing in the state this year. So the
- 10:42Speaker 1: southwest portion of the state is usually the earliest rut. Um.
- 10:46Speaker 1: We've got some deer um in an area called Avery
- 10:49Speaker 1: Island where carasca sauce is made that were rut in
- 10:51Speaker 1: late July and early August before the season even opened,
- 10:56Speaker 1: so they were rut end before the season opens on
- 10:58Speaker 1: September fifteenth. But we've been receiving a few pictures of
- 11:02Speaker 1: bucks killed um in rut, big swollen necks and and
- 11:06Speaker 1: um really nice the year from southwest Louisiana. But unfortunately
- 11:10Speaker 1: Hurricane Laura destroyed a lot of that area and the
- 11:13Speaker 1: people in that area are just aren't hunting right now,
- 11:15Speaker 1: and we've got another hurricane coming down the pipe right
- 11:18Speaker 1: now as we speak. But um uh, you know, for
- 11:21Speaker 1: the for the rest of the state, not a whole
- 11:23Speaker 1: lot of rut action. We won't get much until the
- 11:26Speaker 1: very beginning of November. For the other portions, like the
- 11:28Speaker 1: northern northeast portions of the state, that that kind of
- 11:31Speaker 1: kick off what what we refer to as early which
- 11:34Speaker 1: probably is more in line with the typical Midwest rut
- 11:38Speaker 1: mid November UM, and then we we run all the
- 11:41Speaker 1: way up and through until the middle of February in
- 11:43Speaker 1: some areas, so um We're still very early and a
- 11:47Speaker 1: lot of those other those other areas you mentioned as
- 11:50Speaker 1: a hurricane on the way for that area. How does
- 11:53Speaker 1: the hurricane change things for dear movement in the south
- 11:57Speaker 1: they move about a hundred and thirty miles. Uh, they're
- 12:00Speaker 1: in a hurricane. They the Cameron Prairie area, which is
- 12:05Speaker 1: the southwest portion of the state, just got almost totally flattened.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Um and uh I've I've been sending pictures of some
- 12:14Speaker 1: really nice bucks that were killed in in floodwaters and
- 12:17Speaker 1: and um uh storm surges. Um even seeing pictures of
- 12:21Speaker 1: trees that that fell down on deer and killed them.
- 12:24Speaker 1: So uh, like I said, that part of the state
- 12:28Speaker 1: is going to be hard hit for a while. And
- 12:31Speaker 1: and I'm very uh, very interested as to why the
- 12:35Speaker 1: state hasn't closed those three deery areas down yet for
- 12:38Speaker 1: that reason because in the past, when an area flooded
- 12:41Speaker 1: really bad, such as Baton Rouge, they'll they'll close it
- 12:44Speaker 1: down for the season so that nobody is putting any
- 12:46Speaker 1: excess pressure on the deer. Heard. So I don't think
- 12:50Speaker 1: many people are gonna be hunting in southwest of Muisiana
- 12:52Speaker 1: this year unless they live there and go hunt somewhere else.
- 12:55Speaker 1: One of the most popular food sources for early to
- 12:58Speaker 1: mid October for most of the eight Most of them
- 13:01Speaker 1: say it's gonna be acorns. Um. You need to be
- 13:03Speaker 1: finding your white oak trees that are just now starting
- 13:05Speaker 1: to drop. Um. Hunt hundreds of oat groves over the
- 13:09Speaker 1: weekend where there might be twenty five or thirty white
- 13:12Speaker 1: oaks on it, and there's only two of them dropping. Um.
- 13:15Speaker 1: I haven't been back since the weekend, so the others
- 13:18Speaker 1: might have caught up or started dropping by now, But
- 13:20Speaker 1: right now is going to be focusing on your white oaks,
- 13:23Speaker 1: um and uh, and trying to set up in between
- 13:26Speaker 1: the travel routes are the betting areas and the white
- 13:29Speaker 1: oaks themselves and catch them pass them by. That's gonna
- 13:31Speaker 1: be your best food source currently. You were successful on
- 13:35Speaker 1: some recent haunts since openers. Tell me about those setups
- 13:38Speaker 1: for getting those deer on the ground. Oh man, you
- 13:41Speaker 1: know how Babe Ruth used to point to left field
- 13:43Speaker 1: with his bat. I. Uh, that's that's how I feel.
- 13:47Speaker 1: That's how I fell over the weekend. I I've quite
- 13:51Speaker 1: literally pointed at three places on a map and said
- 13:55Speaker 1: this is where it's going to happen, and I killed
- 13:58Speaker 1: three deer and five hunts in uh in four days.
- 14:02Speaker 1: UM my camp. The guys in my camp, we killed
- 14:05Speaker 1: one deer every day, all in public land. UM. Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday,
- 14:10Speaker 1: I got a call by the w A manager asking
- 14:13Speaker 1: where we were hunting because out of thirty efforts on
- 14:16Speaker 1: that w n A, we were the only four people
- 14:18Speaker 1: to kill the ear. And so you know, I'm feeling
- 14:21Speaker 1: pretty good about myself right now as far as locating dear.
- 14:24Speaker 1: But that was all to do with UM. I was
- 14:27Speaker 1: combining travel routes and transitions, uh and mean and what transitions? Meaning? Um,
- 14:34Speaker 1: I was crossing a swamp or a body of water,
- 14:36Speaker 1: so I was blocking off one side and then I
- 14:39Speaker 1: was hunting the south wind south wind side of an
- 14:42Speaker 1: oak ridge or oak flat. And um, early season like that,
- 14:46Speaker 1: when I said, all those trees aren't dropping yet, it's
- 14:49Speaker 1: really easy to hone in on the one that is.
- 14:51Speaker 1: And just I mean they come to it like a
- 14:53Speaker 1: bug to a light. And uh, I mean it was
- 14:56Speaker 1: the best opener I've ever had. I was feeling very
- 14:59Speaker 1: confident right out going forward. Then in this next week
- 15:02Speaker 1: or so, what do you think that buck activity is
- 15:04Speaker 1: going to be on a scale of one to ten
- 15:05Speaker 1: in Louisiana. I think it's going to normalize so about
- 15:08Speaker 1: a six or probably six. Wenna call it a six. Um.
- 15:12Speaker 1: It's gotten hot, um. The pressure is gonna get real
- 15:16Speaker 1: high with the storm. Even if you don't get hit
- 15:18Speaker 1: by the storm, I think it's gonna shut down a
- 15:20Speaker 1: lot of dear, dear activity just from the heat, um
- 15:24Speaker 1: and the fact that there's a lot of people in
- 15:25Speaker 1: the woods this year. From COVID and we talked about
- 15:28Speaker 1: this um a lot recently, where you've got people that
- 15:32Speaker 1: are laid off or working from home, and to a
- 15:35Speaker 1: lot of people working from home is the same thing
- 15:36Speaker 1: as working from a deer stand and they might be
- 15:39Speaker 1: over pressuring their areas. So it's something we all need
- 15:41Speaker 1: to watch out for this year. But I think it's
- 15:43Speaker 1: gonna go down to a six because because of the
- 15:47Speaker 1: weather primarily. Alright, Kyler, congrats on your successful opener. Good
- 15:51Speaker 1: luck on the rest of your haunson. Thanks for joining me, appreciated, Sencer,
- 15:54Speaker 1: have a good day alright, and joining us on the
- 15:57Speaker 1: line next is Justin Michelle from New York. Justin in
- 16:01Speaker 1: New York, what would you say the bucket activities been
- 16:03Speaker 1: lately on the scale of one to ten, I'd probably
- 16:07Speaker 1: give it about a five. I think, Um, the activity
- 16:12Speaker 1: that I've seen has been somewhat standard for that end
- 16:16Speaker 1: of summer going into fall. Um still food patterns, But
- 16:20Speaker 1: I did uh have a sit that I that I
- 16:23Speaker 1: did the other night where there was some sparring. You
- 16:25Speaker 1: could tell that these bucks are getting just a bit more,
- 16:29Speaker 1: you know, edgy and um trying to push around a
- 16:32Speaker 1: little bit. So I think that I think we're on
- 16:35Speaker 1: our way. We just had New York's opening about a
- 16:37Speaker 1: week ago. Typically how aggressive are you for those opening haunts?
- 16:42Speaker 1: Typically I'm not that aggressive. I like to take those
- 16:47Speaker 1: first few sits and kind of do more observation. But um,
- 16:51Speaker 1: I had a box that I got on camera once
- 16:56Speaker 1: and a buck that I have the same buck I
- 16:58Speaker 1: had seen him mall couple of times from about June
- 17:02Speaker 1: on and kind of figured it out somewhat of his
- 17:06Speaker 1: core area. But you know, cameras didn't help me out
- 17:09Speaker 1: much on that. So, UM, I, with my work schedule
- 17:15Speaker 1: and the cold front that hit, I thought I was
- 17:18Speaker 1: just going to take a bit of an educated guest
- 17:21Speaker 1: and I dove in on him that first night sit
- 17:26Speaker 1: and um, I saw a thirteen gear that night and
- 17:30Speaker 1: one of the deer was him. I actually had him
- 17:33Speaker 1: come by. He has a drop time on his left side,
- 17:37Speaker 1: so I he was pretty easy to pick out. And
- 17:40Speaker 1: I had him come by and he was at five yards,
- 17:44Speaker 1: and uh, it was one of those situations where I
- 17:47Speaker 1: kind of kind of hoped it wasn't him when I
- 17:50Speaker 1: saw him, because he looked a bit different. Um when
- 17:52Speaker 1: I actually got my eyes on him, So I let
- 17:55Speaker 1: him get about twenty third yards and grunted him back,
- 17:59Speaker 1: got eyes on him in and UM, I decided I
- 18:02Speaker 1: was gonna probably let him go another year. So uh,
- 18:06Speaker 1: I think that between that cold front and the lack
- 18:10Speaker 1: of pressure that had been in the woods so far,
- 18:14Speaker 1: I was able to capitalize at least on you know,
- 18:17Speaker 1: connecting some dots. Even though it didn't turn into anything
- 18:21Speaker 1: on the ground, the opportunity was there. Are you seeing
- 18:24Speaker 1: any signmaking yet in New York? As of right now,
- 18:28Speaker 1: it's still seems a bit dry. Um. You know, from
- 18:31Speaker 1: from the time that I've been out and even a
- 18:34Speaker 1: couple of weeks before, you know, I'm not seeing what
- 18:37Speaker 1: I feel like I typically do and I'm not sure
- 18:40Speaker 1: if that's you know, temperature related or um, if things
- 18:44Speaker 1: just aren't heating up yet. But yeah, I'm not I
- 18:48Speaker 1: feel like by now I'm typically seeing more scrapes and
- 18:51Speaker 1: rubs pop up, but as of now, it's you know,
- 18:54Speaker 1: still seems maybe a little bit early. What food sources
- 18:58Speaker 1: are you focused on in early to mid October in
- 19:01Speaker 1: that part of the country, Well, that depends on, um,
- 19:05Speaker 1: what's actually going on. I mean, I I've actually seen uh,
- 19:10Speaker 1: you know, I've noticed that in a well, mainly green sources.
- 19:14Speaker 1: But as I say that, you know, if if they
- 19:16Speaker 1: come through and they do a cut on the alfalfa, uh,
- 19:20Speaker 1: there seems to be a bit of a switch over
- 19:22Speaker 1: to that because of that fresh growth. So they're still
- 19:26Speaker 1: at this point from what I'm seeing hitting the greens. Again,
- 19:30Speaker 1: it's a little bit early. Um, but all of the
- 19:34Speaker 1: deer that I've seen, I've got winter wheat that um
- 19:37Speaker 1: that I've seen pop up and they're hitting that. It's
- 19:40Speaker 1: really right now. I would say it's all that new
- 19:43Speaker 1: fresh growth. So whether it be something that was planted
- 19:47Speaker 1: late that's just popping or um. Yeah, same with the
- 19:52Speaker 1: with the alfalfa, And I have a small plot in
- 19:54Speaker 1: and have seen the same thing a significant amount of
- 19:58Speaker 1: deer and does and fawns um in that green source.
- 20:02Speaker 1: Uh that I'm getting on camera now, if you're doing
- 20:05Speaker 1: a morning set up over these next couple of weeks,
- 20:08Speaker 1: what do those situations look like? Well, I typically don't
- 20:13Speaker 1: like to do mornings this early, but again with work,
- 20:18Speaker 1: with my work schedule, I've had to get a little
- 20:20Speaker 1: bit more creative. So um, right now, you know, I
- 20:24Speaker 1: have a couple of spots in mind. Um. I have
- 20:28Speaker 1: done one so far and it was a bit you know,
- 20:32Speaker 1: I noticed transition back from food to bed, which is
- 20:35Speaker 1: you know, pretty typical for for this early time of year.
- 20:39Speaker 1: But I do have a spot that I've kind of
- 20:42Speaker 1: been keeping an eye on that I'm really pumped to
- 20:46Speaker 1: get in. Uh when when I get a little bit
- 20:49Speaker 1: of a switch and weather here where it's a corn
- 20:54Speaker 1: field that got put in fairly late, and it's uh
- 20:58Speaker 1: and and it has a couple of little fingers of
- 21:01Speaker 1: timber that come right out into the corn field that
- 21:04Speaker 1: has oaks on it. So and I know that those
- 21:06Speaker 1: oaks typically produce a good amount of acorn. So I
- 21:11Speaker 1: when I my next sit I think will be Uh,
- 21:15Speaker 1: in that spot. So I'll either get them coming in
- 21:20Speaker 1: coming in from the corn headed back to bed if
- 21:23Speaker 1: they're not betting in the corn for those acorns, or
- 21:26Speaker 1: I just think there's gonna be great movement in that
- 21:29Speaker 1: area because of the the amount of food there going forward.
- 21:33Speaker 1: Then in the next week or so, what do you
- 21:35Speaker 1: think that bucket TV is going to be on a
- 21:37Speaker 1: scale of one to ten in New York? Well, naturally,
- 21:40Speaker 1: I would say it's probably gonna at least move move
- 21:44Speaker 1: up on the scale. So, like I said, it was
- 21:47Speaker 1: probably a five. I think we'll start to squeak up
- 21:51Speaker 1: a bit, maybe six. I don't know if we'll get
- 21:53Speaker 1: to a seven. But you know, I've been away from
- 21:57Speaker 1: home for a few days, so you know it does
- 22:00Speaker 1: and take long for that signed to start to pop up.
- 22:03Speaker 1: And uh, I would say, I would say we're going
- 22:06Speaker 1: to start, you know, moving in the right direction here,
- 22:09Speaker 1: all right, justin a good luck of those haunts we
- 22:11Speaker 1: can get back in the woods. Thanks for joining me,
- 22:13Speaker 1: Thanks Spencer all right in joining us on the line.
- 22:16Speaker 1: Next is Clifford Martin from Sticking Pick in Iowa. Now,
- 22:20Speaker 1: Clifford in Iowa, what would you say the buck activities
- 22:23Speaker 1: been lately on a scale of one to ten, I
- 22:27Speaker 1: would say it's probably been uh. In the last week,
- 22:29Speaker 1: it's probably been uh eight to nine. It's been very
- 22:34Speaker 1: very good for early season and obviously, um, we've had
- 22:39Speaker 1: a good front come through, high pressure, cooler temperatures and
- 22:45Speaker 1: normal for the first of the seasons and uh it's
- 22:48Speaker 1: uh been about as good as it gets for the
- 22:51Speaker 1: first of the season. Now you and your family have
- 22:53Speaker 1: put down some awesome bucks lately in Iowa. Tell me
- 22:56Speaker 1: about the setups for those successful haunts. Yeah. Absolutely, Um.
- 23:02Speaker 1: For the my two boys, obviously, they get to hunt
- 23:05Speaker 1: in youth season uh in Iowa, so that starts mid
- 23:09Speaker 1: September and runs to the first of October, and that
- 23:14Speaker 1: can be kind of a tricky time of the year
- 23:16Speaker 1: to hunt. But the first year, um, my oldest son
- 23:20Speaker 1: killed was on uh standing beans that were still pretty green,
- 23:25Speaker 1: which is can be pretty good at that time of
- 23:27Speaker 1: the year if they're not too yellow. And so we
- 23:30Speaker 1: were able to capitalize on a great deer on day
- 23:34Speaker 1: one of youth season, obviously to the green soybeans. And
- 23:38Speaker 1: then um um about a week ago my youngest son
- 23:43Speaker 1: killed his on we focused in on more of a
- 23:46Speaker 1: green turn up plot classic a plot. UM. The beans
- 23:50Speaker 1: were getting pretty yellow, so anything green was basically um
- 23:55Speaker 1: starting to really turn on for white tails. So we
- 23:58Speaker 1: really started focusing on and more something green, greener, and
- 24:03Speaker 1: that's where we found the deer. And yeah, we were
- 24:05Speaker 1: able to knock down some great deer on the youth season.
- 24:08Speaker 1: And then for me, first of October, I was lucky
- 24:11Speaker 1: enough to harvest the one of my target bucks and
- 24:14Speaker 1: I focused on green clover plot. So first of the
- 24:18Speaker 1: season there, right around the first of October, if everything's
- 24:21Speaker 1: dried down, it's definitely focused to focus on anything green.
- 24:26Speaker 1: That's where we normally do our best the first of
- 24:29Speaker 1: the year or the first of the season. I'm sorry, now,
- 24:31Speaker 1: how deep into fall are you focused on the green
- 24:34Speaker 1: food sources? From here forward, all the way to the rut,
- 24:37Speaker 1: I really focus on green um. And you know, then
- 24:42Speaker 1: you know your rut comes in food is not quite
- 24:44Speaker 1: as important. And then obviously after uh you know, third
- 24:49Speaker 1: week of November, then it's back on green and then
- 24:52Speaker 1: from there it's you know, um, later into December, you
- 24:56Speaker 1: know your grains will be better or do better UM.
- 24:59Speaker 1: Obviously if you have standing beans or corn um that's
- 25:02Speaker 1: what we look into all the way into December. Are
- 25:05Speaker 1: you seeing any signmaking yet in Iowa? Yea, it is
- 25:08Speaker 1: definitely picking up obviously, you know with the rising moon pressure. Um,
- 25:13Speaker 1: you know, the sign has been just you know, just exploding.
- 25:17Speaker 1: We do have a warm snap right now, so I
- 25:20Speaker 1: think that will probably slow it up a little bit.
- 25:21Speaker 1: But you know, give it a week or two and
- 25:24Speaker 1: it should be rolling. But as far as for this
- 25:26Speaker 1: time of the year, it's definitely really exploded. Do you
- 25:29Speaker 1: have any tricks for killing a mature buck over these
- 25:31Speaker 1: next couple of weeks when a lot of them go nocturnal.
- 25:34Speaker 1: That's a good question, and I don't know if there's
- 25:36Speaker 1: a record right answer for me. Um, it is definitely
- 25:40Speaker 1: a tougher time of the year. Um, probably, you know,
- 25:44Speaker 1: I think they're just not walking around as much in
- 25:47Speaker 1: the daylight. For me, I try to get real close,
- 25:50Speaker 1: and obviously I have the luxury of doing a lot
- 25:53Speaker 1: of pots here in Iowa. I try to get real
- 25:54Speaker 1: close to their bedding this time of the year. They
- 25:58Speaker 1: they're usually moving late, so the closer you can get
- 26:01Speaker 1: to their bedding this time of the year, or any
- 26:03Speaker 1: food source that's real close they're betting that's probably you know,
- 26:05Speaker 1: last minute when they wander out of their bedroom is
- 26:09Speaker 1: probably the the biggest thing for me is trying to
- 26:12Speaker 1: get as close to them as you can that time
- 26:14Speaker 1: of the year. Do you notice the shift in bedding
- 26:17Speaker 1: it all in the month of October? Um? Not really No,
- 26:20Speaker 1: I mean, um, there's definitely here in Iowa, we you know,
- 26:24Speaker 1: the harvest is in full blast right now, so that
- 26:27Speaker 1: usually changes a lot of things. You'll have some new
- 26:31Speaker 1: bucks show up. Bucks you know definitely are moving around
- 26:35Speaker 1: a little bit as far as adjusting their bedding areas
- 26:38Speaker 1: and so on. So and I think a lot of
- 26:40Speaker 1: that here in Iowa anyway, where we don't have just
- 26:42Speaker 1: a southern Iowa, we don't have just a ton of timber.
- 26:45Speaker 1: Some areas we do, but where I hunt, I don't
- 26:47Speaker 1: have as much timber. So um, I say, the harvest
- 26:52Speaker 1: bumps a lot of pushes, a lot of deer that
- 26:54Speaker 1: we're living in the crops and uh are now transitioning
- 26:58Speaker 1: to you know, where there's more cover as they get
- 27:02Speaker 1: pushed out of the corn fields and so on, as
- 27:04Speaker 1: the harvest going forward. Then in this next week or so,
- 27:07Speaker 1: what do you think that Bucke activity is going to
- 27:09Speaker 1: be on a scale of one to ten in Iowa.
- 27:11Speaker 1: I would say it's probably gonna be uh five. Just
- 27:16Speaker 1: it's not gonna be very hot here in the next
- 27:19Speaker 1: week or two. Alright, Clifford, congrats on the awesome dear
- 27:22Speaker 1: thanks for joining me. Thank you appreciate it. And that
- 27:26Speaker 1: concludes this week's episode of rout Fresh Radio. Thanks to
