- 0:10Speaker 1: Patriot's Unfiltered. Like, what do you like guy wearing shorts?
- 0:16Speaker 1: What do you like down below? Boy? I need more pepsi?
- 0:21Speaker 1: After that question? What kind of socks do you like?
- 0:23Speaker 1: I have an excellent mattress. That a mattress, Jule, you
- 0:25Speaker 1: don't know, you don't know? No, that's everything important in
- 0:29Speaker 1: my house? Are sep Why are you being like Eric
- 0:31Speaker 1: and not giving me information? Do you ever think maybe
- 0:33Speaker 1: I don't want to tell you that I spent way
- 0:35Speaker 1: more money on a mattress than should be humanly possible
- 0:38Speaker 1: with that temperate pedic pillow top. That's like a five
- 0:40Speaker 1: to six thousand dollars mattress, you know. But he can
- 0:42Speaker 1: change the TV channels with his butt cheeks so he
- 0:45Speaker 1: didn't have to move his arms. Yeah, ESPN, I really
- 0:52Speaker 1: appreciate this. Two lead a bottle of diet pepsi than
- 0:55Speaker 1: which is half gone already. Crap, you got a hollow
- 0:58Speaker 1: leg over there. There's a lot of It's a lot
- 1:00Speaker 1: in here too. Is Patriot's Unfiltered fueled by Duncan. All right,
- 1:10Speaker 1: welcome to Patriots Unfiltered. As you can tell, Paul's not
- 1:12Speaker 1: here today because we completely eviscerated him in the opening.
- 1:16Speaker 1: But Deuce is here, Alex is here, I'm here, Matt's here.
- 1:20Speaker 1: We'll probably have a special guest a little later on. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:23Speaker 1: after a media vail that's going on right now. We
- 1:25Speaker 1: got some of the old captain's talking, so yeah, we'll
- 1:28Speaker 1: see what they have to say and get a guest on. Yeah.
- 1:31Speaker 1: So um, it is Tuesday here at Gillette Stadium, and
- 1:35Speaker 1: it's the day before practice starts for the public, towards
- 1:39Speaker 1: the night before training. Unbelievable. It has just gone so far,
- 1:43Speaker 1: so fast. Has Yeah, every year it seems to go
- 1:46Speaker 1: a little bit a little bit faster. And I feel
- 1:48Speaker 1: like I get I still got the excitement though, I
- 1:50Speaker 1: got that like just that energy of I always think
- 1:53Speaker 1: of Jerry Jones, and this is the classic Jerry Jones
- 1:57Speaker 1: and Unhard Knocks where he was like giving a speech
- 1:58Speaker 1: and he's like, I want to be here. I want
- 2:00Speaker 1: to be with the cowboys, and I'm always like, that's
- 2:02Speaker 1: how I feel like I want to be. I would
- 2:05Speaker 1: have been, but I want to be here. You know,
- 2:06Speaker 1: trading camp. Like where else would you want to be?
- 2:08Speaker 1: I mean, especially when as in California and you'd be like,
- 2:11Speaker 1: all these people are getting to watch training camp and
- 2:13Speaker 1: I just have to sit here and like, you know,
- 2:14Speaker 1: I'd read blobservations and you know I read that. But
- 2:17Speaker 1: but it's cool. I'm excited. Yeah. So nine thirty tomorrow
- 2:20Speaker 1: practice starts open to the public, So if you want
- 2:24Speaker 1: to come down, come down. Parking is free. Everything is free, um,
- 2:29Speaker 1: except for the food and the food trucks, but otherwise, um,
- 2:32Speaker 1: it's a fun time for all. Whether it's supposed to
- 2:35Speaker 1: be pretty good tomorrow, right, yep, I don't see rain
- 2:38Speaker 1: in the forecastle all we need it, Yeah, not as
- 2:40Speaker 1: doesn't seem as like as hot as it's been. Yeah
- 2:42Speaker 1: for nine he's unbearable luckily for the players. Yeah. So
- 2:46Speaker 1: here Elton John warming up the next few days too. Yeah,
- 2:49Speaker 1: that's all Eton John concert tomorrow and Thursday here. So
- 2:52Speaker 1: it's a busy Gillette Stadium kind of bounce back for
- 2:56Speaker 1: Elton John lately with that remix that uh that he has.
- 2:59Speaker 1: You know that song is been all over the radio
- 3:00Speaker 1: where it's like kind of a mashup of his music.
- 3:03Speaker 1: It's kind of correctly that he has some music coming
- 3:06Speaker 1: out with Britney Spears as well, or did I check it? Oh?
- 3:10Speaker 1: Is he going to be like another Tony Bennett and
- 3:12Speaker 1: to do these duets? I thought that was pretty good.
- 3:17Speaker 1: I can't lie. I mean, I don't know how you
- 3:20Speaker 1: cannot like Elton John and some some capacity. I mean,
- 3:23Speaker 1: he's when I was when I was younger. That's one
- 3:26Speaker 1: of my first albums was Yellow Brick Road. Say that's
- 3:29Speaker 1: that's one of my all time Okay, favorite songs. You're
- 3:32Speaker 1: making a comeback Spears Records a duet of Tiny Dancer
- 3:36Speaker 1: with Elton John. That's not really a Britney Spears type song.
- 3:41Speaker 1: I'm imagining, like you don't, I don't know, She's not
- 3:44Speaker 1: really She's more a dancer, right and she's not a
- 3:48Speaker 1: mediocre singer. But it was like more the package of
- 3:50Speaker 1: the presentation. I feel. You know, who is a big
- 3:52Speaker 1: Britney Spears fan in the day, Paul Paul, He he
- 3:56Speaker 1: liked some Britney Spears. She's well, well, when when he
- 3:59Speaker 1: started he in like ninety nine, that was like Britney craze.
- 4:03Speaker 1: That was right when she kind of hit it when
- 4:06Speaker 1: she came on the scene with her school girl outfit
- 4:09Speaker 1: and then pigtails sing it one more time. Yeah. Yeah,
- 4:12Speaker 1: I remember in college. That was my last year of
- 4:14Speaker 1: college too, and like there were like four we had
- 4:16Speaker 1: like Talent Show, Senior Talent Show when they were like
- 4:18Speaker 1: four different groups of girls that all did Britney Spears
- 4:23Speaker 1: school girl outfit, pigtail like dance lip sync routine. So
- 4:27Speaker 1: that was the time to do it. Yeah, she was
- 4:29Speaker 1: all right, but we're not here to talk about Britney Spears. Well,
- 4:31Speaker 1: it's the day before Practic Training camp starts. Bill Belichick
- 4:36Speaker 1: had his opening press conference this morning at eight o'clock
- 4:39Speaker 1: and I was talking with Deuce before the show, and
- 4:42Speaker 1: you know, it was the normal you know, how you doing, Bill,
- 4:45Speaker 1: and you know, questions that weren't going to get a response.
- 4:48Speaker 1: But the one that did that I thought was worth
- 4:50Speaker 1: listening to was the one on Mac Jones. Yeah. Yeah,
- 4:53Speaker 1: I mean, I think that's making the rounds right now
- 4:55Speaker 1: on the internet, but I mean it was it was
- 4:57Speaker 1: you know, I don't like to go overboard, like he
- 4:59Speaker 1: never does. It's like I think he does praise guys,
- 5:01Speaker 1: but it was I don't want to know if you
- 5:02Speaker 1: would say effusive, but it was significant praise. I think
- 5:05Speaker 1: of all the work that Mac has put in, and
- 5:08Speaker 1: you know, I think that the phrase to stuck out
- 5:10Speaker 1: to me was that, you know, he's just so much
- 5:12Speaker 1: further along in the football conversation, which was another thing
- 5:15Speaker 1: he kind of taught. Like remember Ernie Adams in pasts
- 5:17Speaker 1: for the past talking about him and Bill having a
- 5:18Speaker 1: football conversation. So yeah, I mean, it's it's everything is
- 5:22Speaker 1: pointing to Mac doing everything that he has to do
- 5:26Speaker 1: this offseason, and you know, will it translate on the field,
- 5:28Speaker 1: and how big of a jump can he make? He'll
- 5:30Speaker 1: have to go out and do that. I don't want
- 5:32Speaker 1: to like say, oh, well he's automatically going to make
- 5:34Speaker 1: a huge leap, but I think he's done everything you
- 5:36Speaker 1: can ask for him. And you know, as a team
- 5:38Speaker 1: a year ago that you know wasn't sure who their
- 5:40Speaker 1: quarterback was or you know, had that season with Cam
- 5:43Speaker 1: Newton and you know, not having that continuity to have
- 5:45Speaker 1: it back now. I just think that's a great place
- 5:48Speaker 1: to start with an NFL team. I think it's critical
- 5:50Speaker 1: and if you don't have that quarterback and somebody that
- 5:52Speaker 1: you believe in, you're not going anywhere. Yeah, I mean
- 5:55Speaker 1: it was they he knows more about the offense now,
- 5:58Speaker 1: but now Bill and the coaches know more about him. Yep.
- 6:02Speaker 1: So like you said, we're further down in that football conversation.
- 6:06Speaker 1: So good stuff. And you know the fact that Bill
- 6:09Speaker 1: shows to talk about that, I think that, you know,
- 6:12Speaker 1: that's good. And there was another player you know, usually
- 6:15Speaker 1: you know, how is uh, you know, Marcus Jones doing well,
- 6:18Speaker 1: you know, okay, but when Trey Nixon's name came up,
- 6:22Speaker 1: he talked at length about Trey Nixon a little bit.
- 6:26Speaker 1: So that always tells me that, um, it's a guy
- 6:31Speaker 1: who is going above what's expected of him, and they're
- 6:35Speaker 1: hopeful and they want to encourage him to keep along
- 6:38Speaker 1: that track. And usually if there's a young guy that
- 6:41Speaker 1: Bill does you know, talk at length about That's why
- 6:45Speaker 1: you know that there he showed some promise and Bill
- 6:49Speaker 1: wants to encourage him. And especially with the relationship he's
- 6:52Speaker 1: clearly built with Mac, they're good friends. Chemistry there. Definitely
- 6:55Speaker 1: voting well for him. Yeah, And I mean I think
- 6:57Speaker 1: to the you know, the passes he caught him Minni camping,
- 6:59Speaker 1: and I think it's it can be easy to get
- 7:01Speaker 1: carried away with a handful of plays in mini camp,
- 7:04Speaker 1: and so that's why I think I'm, you know, just
- 7:07Speaker 1: a little bit like, is this for real? Is train
- 7:09Speaker 1: Nixon real? For real? Is he going to even get
- 7:11Speaker 1: opportunities with the top line guys out of the gate.
- 7:14Speaker 1: If your answer is I don't know, that's the correct answer, right,
- 7:17Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know. He certainly looked good,
- 7:19Speaker 1: and I mean I think, you know, to Alex's point,
- 7:21Speaker 1: I think there were at least two passes that were
- 7:23Speaker 1: the same completion from Mac that you know, it seemed
- 7:26Speaker 1: like he was comfortable and targeting him down the field,
- 7:29Speaker 1: and we've all talked about that's something that the offense
- 7:32Speaker 1: really needs. So if that continues to show up in
- 7:35Speaker 1: training camp and he makes a push and oh hey
- 7:37Speaker 1: it's Parker Aglaura Nixon, then we might be talking about something.
- 7:41Speaker 1: If he's over on the other field with all the
- 7:43Speaker 1: you know guys running with Bailey Zappy, then you know,
- 7:46Speaker 1: it was just kind of one of those things where, yeah,
- 7:47Speaker 1: I mean, and in that position, it is a numbers
- 7:50Speaker 1: game right now, you know, so there's just so many weapons.
- 7:53Speaker 1: But I'm sure he's going to get some opportunities you know, yeah,
- 7:56Speaker 1: he's got to make the most of it. And and
- 7:59Speaker 1: I think that to go back a point from a
- 8:00Speaker 1: couple of shows ago, if just these guys stay healthy,
- 8:03Speaker 1: stay on the field, it's worth so much just to
- 8:06Speaker 1: have that continuity, even if you're not the greatest player
- 8:08Speaker 1: in the world, just being out there every day and
- 8:10Speaker 1: catching the balls that are thrown at you and when
- 8:12Speaker 1: you get a chance, you make the most of it.
- 8:14Speaker 1: I think that's what you know. Guys here they're able
- 8:16Speaker 1: to stack some success and then you know, and then
- 8:18Speaker 1: you're realistically saying, well, che's TRAINIX and might push one
- 8:22Speaker 1: of these other receivers that have been here off the
- 8:24Speaker 1: roster potentially. I don't I'm not ready to realistically make
- 8:28Speaker 1: that case, but I think it's in the realm of possibility.
- 8:31Speaker 1: But you know, how does it, like, well Jordan Humphrey
- 8:32Speaker 1: fit into Yeah, Like, okay, so let's let's do you know,
- 8:36Speaker 1: you're you've done your you know questions going into camp
- 8:39Speaker 1: and stuff. But I'll do one for everyone. What's your
- 8:41Speaker 1: who's your sleeper? Who's your sleeper? Right now? For camp?
- 8:46Speaker 1: I would even buy sleeper um, someone that maybe people
- 8:51Speaker 1: aren't really considering, you know, in the mix. Uh, and
- 8:56Speaker 1: they're sleeping on and could emerge. I mean, this is
- 8:59Speaker 1: a stupid one, probably, but I would just say I'd
- 9:01Speaker 1: say hand Henry Henderson because I don't think there are
- 9:03Speaker 1: a lot of people that I knew you were going
- 9:04Speaker 1: to say that. You know me, I'm a defense guy,
- 9:07Speaker 1: but I don't I mean, has anyone sleeping on Jonathan Smith?
- 9:10Speaker 1: Everybody knows what his year was like and what he
- 9:11Speaker 1: needs say, is anyone hunter Henry Kendrick Bourne, Like maybe
- 9:15Speaker 1: you could say people are sleeping on Agalore a little
- 9:17Speaker 1: bit and looking what he did last year and kind
- 9:18Speaker 1: of just writing him off as all right, he's not.
- 9:20Speaker 1: I mean I wouldn't totally do it, but I think
- 9:22Speaker 1: Henry Anderson is just a guy at a position that
- 9:25Speaker 1: they need, that's played in the league, that has shown
- 9:28Speaker 1: he can get some pressure on a quarterback, has some
- 9:30Speaker 1: good size. So when you talk about a defense that
- 9:32Speaker 1: didn't have a lot added promising in the front seven,
- 9:35Speaker 1: he's one guy that's returning that could potentially. Now I
- 9:39Speaker 1: say this with the full admission that last year we
- 9:41Speaker 1: were kind of is he on the bubble? We didn't
- 9:42Speaker 1: even know if he was going to make the team.
- 9:43Speaker 1: It wasn't like he was in training camp lighting things up. So, Alex,
- 9:46Speaker 1: you've got a sleeper. Um. I don't know if it's
- 9:49Speaker 1: necessarily like a specific player as a speaker as a sleeper,
- 9:53Speaker 1: but I would really like to see someone from like
- 9:56Speaker 1: a cornerback just step up. I think we have a
- 9:58Speaker 1: history of per You're seeing really good talent there and
- 10:01Speaker 1: developing it, and then like J. C. Jackson really seemed
- 10:04Speaker 1: to come out of nowhere and was all of a
- 10:05Speaker 1: sudden the stud corner as a really young kid, and
- 10:08Speaker 1: I would like to see that again. I think maybe
- 10:10Speaker 1: Terrence Mitchell might be your guy. Like I mean again,
- 10:13Speaker 1: it's kind of like like Anderson, a pro. He's been around,
- 10:16Speaker 1: but got his hands on a lot of balls the
- 10:18Speaker 1: last couple of years, you know. I just I don't
- 10:21Speaker 1: know about Malcolm Butler. I don't know if he's ready
- 10:24Speaker 1: to jump back in and be the same guy. I
- 10:27Speaker 1: think that's a that's a big question too, of I
- 10:29Speaker 1: think Malcolm Butler could be anywhere from starting left cornerback
- 10:33Speaker 1: to not making the team. Yeah right now, if you
- 10:35Speaker 1: haven't already guessed, one of my sleepers is Trey Nixon.
- 10:39Speaker 1: The other is Time Montgomery. You know, I don't think
- 10:43Speaker 1: people are gonna have a lot of high expectations for him,
- 10:48Speaker 1: but I think he's at least as good as Brandon Bolden.
- 10:52Speaker 1: You know, maybe not in special teams, but you know,
- 10:55Speaker 1: like the tackling part of specialties, like getting on the
- 10:57Speaker 1: field and tackling guys. But he's better with the ball
- 10:59Speaker 1: in this man. Yeah, So in the backfield, I think,
- 11:01Speaker 1: you know, he's as good, if not better than Brandon Bolden.
- 11:05Speaker 1: And I think, you know, I'm not I don't think
- 11:08Speaker 1: James White's gonna be playing at least early on. Yeah,
- 11:11Speaker 1: And I think Ty Montgomery's gonna get an opportunity. And
- 11:14Speaker 1: I think he's got some skills he doesn't mean And
- 11:17Speaker 1: I just don't think you could ever write off a
- 11:18Speaker 1: guy who's played receiver and running back in the league
- 11:22Speaker 1: when he gets here, because he can do so much.
- 11:23Speaker 1: If they have injuries at running back or they have
- 11:25Speaker 1: injuries at wide receiver in camp, he's going to be
- 11:28Speaker 1: able to, you know, slip into one of those roles. Yeah.
- 11:31Speaker 1: I think he could be a good one now if
- 11:33Speaker 1: I'm remembering correctly, I think we saw him mostly with
- 11:35Speaker 1: the receivers in Mini camps, So you know, we'll just
- 11:38Speaker 1: kind of see how how it plays out. But I
- 11:39Speaker 1: think you're right on the James White, that's he's on PUP.
- 11:44Speaker 1: I wouldn't mind having James White kind of week six
- 11:47Speaker 1: come back. You have him just off the leadership. Guys
- 11:50Speaker 1: talk about him in the locker room or you know
- 11:51Speaker 1: what a leader he is, and you love to have
- 11:54Speaker 1: that here. But why rush it? You know? But again,
- 11:55Speaker 1: they always seem to paint themselves into a corner with
- 11:57Speaker 1: this stuff where you're like, why did you activate the
- 12:00Speaker 1: guy two days before final cuts when you could have
- 12:02Speaker 1: just kept them on PUP and saved them, you know,
- 12:04Speaker 1: and stead and now you've got a tough decision of
- 12:06Speaker 1: how to manage these guys. So um, But I think
- 12:08Speaker 1: that all speaks to the point of there's so many receivers,
- 12:11Speaker 1: there's so many tight ends, there's so many running back.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Just how does that group all play out? Because I
- 12:16Speaker 1: don't think right now there's a place for every single
- 12:19Speaker 1: one of you know, the quote unquote NFL players that
- 12:21Speaker 1: that they had. I think there's gonna be some cuts,
- 12:23Speaker 1: some changes maybe to know that guys, there always is
- 12:25Speaker 1: for sure, Why should this year be any different. Yeah, no,
- 12:29Speaker 1: it so makes it surprising and interesting. And uh, but
- 12:32Speaker 1: another and I mean some other news though too. McMillan
- 12:34Speaker 1: came off the pup list yesterday, which I thought was
- 12:36Speaker 1: a was a positive. Um, he was out there a
- 12:38Speaker 1: lot in in minicamp. Seem right next to McMillan, right
- 12:42Speaker 1: next sorry Bentley. Uh, it seemed like that's kind of
- 12:44Speaker 1: the top inside option. And you know, how does he
- 12:48Speaker 1: fit on on on lightdowns? Do they leave him out there? Um?
- 12:51Speaker 1: You know, does mac wilson kind of playing to that
- 12:53Speaker 1: and like a kind of a Roman fighter passing down
- 12:55Speaker 1: role or as I was, you know, talking a little
- 12:57Speaker 1: bit upstairs with our with our guests, that's coming up,
- 13:00Speaker 1: you know, are we are we looking at four defensive
- 13:01Speaker 1: linemen and seven safety slash cornerbacks and no true traditional
- 13:06Speaker 1: you know linebacker. If if somebody like you know Wilson
- 13:09Speaker 1: or McMillan or you know, to a lesser step mcgron
- 13:12Speaker 1: doesn't doesn't elevate a lot of new faces on defense.
- 13:15Speaker 1: You know, McMillan was a guy they got last year
- 13:17Speaker 1: but went in IR so we never got to see him.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Mac Wilson they picked up this year. Um, and then
- 13:23Speaker 1: I consider all the young guys that we haven't seen
- 13:26Speaker 1: yet as new faces. You know, um, you know mcron
- 13:31Speaker 1: and even Ronnie Perkins Jennings for them mean Anthony Jennings. Yeah,
- 13:36Speaker 1: so these are all new faces and there's a lot
- 13:38Speaker 1: of question marks on defense. That's where that's where the
- 13:42Speaker 1: question marks are on this team. And you think back
- 13:44Speaker 1: to last you know, last year when the big thing
- 13:47Speaker 1: was watching Kyle van Noy and Dante Highttower screw with
- 13:50Speaker 1: Mac Jones and Camp and you know, messing with him
- 13:52Speaker 1: dropping and coming and you know, just just giving him
- 13:55Speaker 1: that experience and you know, now they don't have those
- 13:58Speaker 1: those experience kind of guys. It's really been in Jude
- 14:00Speaker 1: on And you're gonna have to wait and see from
- 14:02Speaker 1: the competition who the other guys are that that emerge
- 14:06Speaker 1: as run stoppers, as pass rushers all that. But I
- 14:09Speaker 1: mean it just you named them. I mean, throw Aucha
- 14:10Speaker 1: into that mix. One of those guys, at least one
- 14:12Speaker 1: of them has to step up and make plays this
- 14:15Speaker 1: year if this defense is going to take a step forward.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Another thing I got out of Bill this morning was
- 14:20Speaker 1: an indication that pads won't go on until next week. Now,
- 14:24Speaker 1: I thought they might be Saturday. You know, they would
- 14:27Speaker 1: have Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and then Saturday put pads on.
- 14:31Speaker 1: But he said next week for pads. Yeah, that's I
- 14:34Speaker 1: was a little disappoint I mean, you're always excited for
- 14:36Speaker 1: the first pad of practice. Yeah, they used to always
- 14:38Speaker 1: be that first Saturday, right, Like they would be Thursday, Friday,
- 14:40Speaker 1: and then the third day they'd be in pads. We'll
- 14:42Speaker 1: have to see. I mean, you talk this morning about
- 14:44Speaker 1: continuation of mini camp and kind of teaching a little
- 14:48Speaker 1: bit and getting everybody refresher course to get into things.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Next week when the pads come on and things start
- 14:54Speaker 1: to get competitive and then the giants they play the giants,
- 14:57Speaker 1: you won't join practice, and then two sets of joint
- 14:59Speaker 1: practices too, So that's you know, it'll slowly ramp up.
- 15:02Speaker 1: This summer is gonna fly. It's gonna fly. It always does.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Already done. Yeah right, well, I don't mean what I
- 15:10Speaker 1: meant to say, actually is this training camp is gonna fly.
- 15:12Speaker 1: It's gonna go buy fast once it starts rolling. Yeah,
- 15:15Speaker 1: you know, especially with the joint practices, will be a
- 15:17Speaker 1: lot of fun. It seems like that's coming together for Vegas.
- 15:20Speaker 1: So be able to be out there. Maybe some live
- 15:21Speaker 1: shows would be you know, pretty cool see what those
- 15:24Speaker 1: facilities are like. But yeah, I mean there was just
- 15:27Speaker 1: so much information last year that come out, I mean,
- 15:29Speaker 1: and and having to watch Mac verse cam and that
- 15:32Speaker 1: main storyline, and you know certainly want to watch Mac
- 15:35Speaker 1: and see that the strides that he and the offense
- 15:37Speaker 1: have taken by. I think the defense is just as
- 15:39Speaker 1: interesting of who the personnel is, how they how they
- 15:41Speaker 1: do things. And then you know, going up against Baker
- 15:43Speaker 1: Mayfield and Sam Donald in camp in a couple of
- 15:46Speaker 1: weeks and you know, maybe seeing what Christian McCaffrey looks
- 15:49Speaker 1: like and in some of those space drills that they
- 15:50Speaker 1: do that might be might be pretty fun. And then
- 15:52Speaker 1: of course Vegas, which yeah, I mean just the number
- 15:55Speaker 1: of crazy good wide receivers they have to play this year,
- 15:58Speaker 1: like I mean, just appripool enough. It's thinking about upstairs,
- 16:01Speaker 1: Like every single week there's like one of these Tyreek
- 16:04Speaker 1: Hill Davante Adams. I mean, it is just relentless with
- 16:07Speaker 1: this schedule and the number of like really really Jamar Chase,
- 16:10Speaker 1: really great top of the line weapons right now, that
- 16:12Speaker 1: goes back to alex As sleeper Hopefully there better be
- 16:16Speaker 1: a cornerback who emerges because they're gonna need as much
- 16:19Speaker 1: help as they can back there. Yeah, they cannot get
- 16:22Speaker 1: cut up again like we saw at last year. I mean,
- 16:25Speaker 1: is it it feels like it's very possible that next
- 16:28Speaker 1: year going into like the draft, you know we need yeah,
- 16:31Speaker 1: that number one corner. And I mean, you know, to
- 16:33Speaker 1: go back two years ago when Paul and I love
- 16:35Speaker 1: Jacy Horne, you know like that, how great would it
- 16:38Speaker 1: be to have second year that kind of I mean,
- 16:40Speaker 1: I know we got Mac, but you know, still it
- 16:42Speaker 1: was a need then that that you were probably hoping
- 16:44Speaker 1: come to fruition here in the twenty twenty two season
- 16:47Speaker 1: and a lot of uncertainty right now. In some NFL news,
- 16:50Speaker 1: I thought it was interesting one of the Patriots opponents
- 16:52Speaker 1: this year will be Kyler Murray and this whole thing
- 16:56Speaker 1: about in his contract he has to do at least
- 16:58Speaker 1: four hours of independent study per week or something like that. Yeah,
- 17:04Speaker 1: oh I miss this. Yeah yeah, So I guess he said, like,
- 17:07Speaker 1: I don't need to watch film. I just go out,
- 17:10Speaker 1: I know everything. I don't need to watch film. And
- 17:12Speaker 1: so part of his new contract is you're gonna watch film.
- 17:15Speaker 1: It's such a bad sign. It's like when you're a
- 17:17Speaker 1: D one athlete and you're forced to do study hall
- 17:19Speaker 1: and yeah, it's like you're great, you you're below a three.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Oh you gotta you got Yeah, you have to have
- 17:24Speaker 1: your teachers sign your hearing thing. I mean, yeah, you
- 17:26Speaker 1: can't take fakes for Healy class. I just it's such
- 17:31Speaker 1: a hard thing. And we've talked about it so many
- 17:33Speaker 1: times of you use a high round draft pick, not
- 17:35Speaker 1: not even you know, to mention the number one overall
- 17:37Speaker 1: pick to get a guy you like him, but he's
- 17:40Speaker 1: got some holes in his game. He's got some holes
- 17:43Speaker 1: in his you know, overall package that he presents. But
- 17:48Speaker 1: what what is the deal breaker? You know, like what
- 17:50Speaker 1: can push you over the edge because it's like stuff
- 17:52Speaker 1: like that that, yeah, you gotta demand that he studies,
- 17:56Speaker 1: like I know that's that's supposed to be like part
- 17:59Speaker 1: of a quarter backs DNA, right and and uh, you
- 18:01Speaker 1: know they're talking about Good Morning Football this morning, like
- 18:04Speaker 1: how do you how do you check that? And and
- 18:07Speaker 1: how do you say we don't you know? Then Kyle
- 18:10Speaker 1: Brandt was saying, you know, like oh, well we finished
- 18:12Speaker 1: six and eleven. Uh you didn't study enough, like, like
- 18:15Speaker 1: you and we're not going to pay you, Like, how
- 18:18Speaker 1: does that happen with lawyers and contracts? And I mean,
- 18:21Speaker 1: what what a mess? I mean not to mention that
- 18:24Speaker 1: everyone's making fun of them all day to day and
- 18:26Speaker 1: this is going to be all season long, as they
- 18:27Speaker 1: were pointing out of like press conference before hours of
- 18:31Speaker 1: study day, right, you know, like like you can't tell
- 18:33Speaker 1: me they're not going to be saying that it's crazy
- 18:35Speaker 1: season long. So Danny Amndola retired officially at thirty six. Yeah.
- 18:40Speaker 1: ELX wrote up with yeah, coach had some nice things
- 18:44Speaker 1: to say. Yeah. Uh. At first it was like a
- 18:46Speaker 1: pretty simple answer, but then someone followed up and he
- 18:49Speaker 1: gave a nice longer one about Danny comparing him to
- 18:53Speaker 1: uh the Troy Browns, Julian Edelman's of the world and
- 18:57Speaker 1: study ranked among the best of those like prototypical slot receivers. Yeah,
- 19:02Speaker 1: like I said earlier, Um, he he has said in
- 19:05Speaker 1: the past that had he not been as injured as
- 19:08Speaker 1: he was, he'd be right up there with the best
- 19:11Speaker 1: of him. Yeah he didn't. You can't argue, I mean
- 19:13Speaker 1: the guy was still clutch. Yeah, you know, well I thought, yeah,
- 19:17Speaker 1: I mean I thought back to, uh, you know, the
- 19:20Speaker 1: first game with the team, and so Welker had left
- 19:22Speaker 1: and you know, they had resigned Edelman, but I don't
- 19:24Speaker 1: think anyone at that point was really expecting Edelman to
- 19:26Speaker 1: be the guy, and Amondola was signed to be, you know,
- 19:29Speaker 1: that vital slot weapon for for Tom Brady, and I
- 19:32Speaker 1: remember fans being beside themselves with with his injury history.
- 19:35Speaker 1: And then he you know, kind of classic Danny. Danny
- 19:37Speaker 1: Amndola comes out in Week one against the Bills and
- 19:40Speaker 1: like a back and forth game, like injures himself while
- 19:43Speaker 1: catching ten balls one hundred and four yards, like they
- 19:45Speaker 1: pull out the win. He has like these acrobatic like
- 19:47Speaker 1: in the air catches, both growing right, and then he
- 19:50Speaker 1: was out the next three weeks. So yeah, it's kind
- 19:52Speaker 1: of classic. Another another tidbit I got was that he
- 19:55Speaker 1: was inactive the last four games of twenty sixteen, and
- 19:58Speaker 1: then you know, came in and was a huge part
- 20:00Speaker 1: of Super Bowl fifty one. Uh you know, so to
- 20:03Speaker 1: come in kind of a little bit not not so fresh,
- 20:06Speaker 1: having you know, not played in a few weeks, he
- 20:09Speaker 1: clearly helped deliver in the Super Bowl. And and then
- 20:11Speaker 1: I think twenty seventeen was you know, probably his pinnacle season,
- 20:15Speaker 1: just because Edelman was out and he finally had to
- 20:17Speaker 1: step into that that slot role kind of full time.
- 20:19Speaker 1: And of course I think I think the social team
- 20:22Speaker 1: put out the the catch he had in the AC
- 20:24Speaker 1: Championship game, which was wow, you know how we got
- 20:26Speaker 1: both feet down crazy, and and then another huge game
- 20:30Speaker 1: against the Eagles, even even in defeat. So yeah, he
- 20:32Speaker 1: was he was a classic. I wish there was another
- 20:34Speaker 1: guy like him, you know, out there on the roster.
- 20:36Speaker 1: I'm surprised there isn't another one of those kind of
- 20:38Speaker 1: prototypical slots, you know, no offense that Trey Nixon or
- 20:41Speaker 1: Jacoby Myers, who were kind of there now, but just
- 20:44Speaker 1: those were always kind of the guys that that made
- 20:45Speaker 1: the engine of the offense run. Yeah, like Braxon Barrios
- 20:48Speaker 1: came in and everyone was like, oh, that's gonna be
- 20:50Speaker 1: I know, I'm not disappointed about that, even though like
- 20:52Speaker 1: we were never that impressed with him here and he's
- 20:54Speaker 1: just but he's kind of you know, it's like I
- 20:56Speaker 1: saw what he did last year and I'm like, it's
- 20:58Speaker 1: kind of stinks that you essentially picked Gunner over him.
- 21:01Speaker 1: That was when when training camp came, you know, Gunner
- 21:03Speaker 1: playing a little d back and being you know, just
- 21:06Speaker 1: returning Ponzi. He had a couple good years. But you know,
- 21:08Speaker 1: I think I not not to pump up bracts the
- 21:10Speaker 1: Burrials too much. But that's still what I'd still take him,
- 21:13Speaker 1: all right. Eight five five Pats five hundred is the
- 21:15Speaker 1: ace ticket hut line. Eight five five Pats five hundred.
- 21:18Speaker 1: Web radio at Patriots dot com is the email address.
- 21:21Speaker 1: Let's get to the phones and email see what people
- 21:24Speaker 1: are thinking. We'll start with Patty and Agawam, what's up Patty? Everyone? Hey,
- 21:31Speaker 1: So I wanted to do a little mac Jones talk
- 21:34Speaker 1: today and I wanted to give you give you guys
- 21:36Speaker 1: three things that I really want to see from him
- 21:38Speaker 1: this year. Um, but I think he'll be conducive to him.
- 21:41Speaker 1: Not you know, I'm saying that he'd arrived, but we
- 21:45Speaker 1: could say that, yeah, he took that that year to jump,
- 21:48Speaker 1: you know when he ran with it. Um. The first
- 21:50Speaker 1: thing very simple. We gotta we gotta see a cutdown
- 21:53Speaker 1: on mental mistakes with him. No more delayed game penalties.
- 21:56Speaker 1: I mean I think we saw more delayed game penalty
- 22:00Speaker 1: Glad here that we saw in all twenty years of
- 22:02Speaker 1: Tom Brady. And I know it's Tom Brady, but I
- 22:04Speaker 1: mean that that's gotta gets cleaned up. The number two
- 22:07Speaker 1: things I want to see, obviously, what they've been working
- 22:10Speaker 1: on a lot in OTAs and in the mini camps
- 22:14Speaker 1: was push the ball down field. You know, make make
- 22:17Speaker 1: some mistakes if you have to throwing it deep, but
- 22:20Speaker 1: get the ball past ten yards on the line of primise,
- 22:24Speaker 1: you know. And the third thing, I think the biggest thing,
- 22:28Speaker 1: I want to see him engineer a handful maybe like
- 22:31Speaker 1: between three inside game winning game winning drives this year.
- 22:36Speaker 1: And yet wouldn't that be nice? And what you guys think, Yeah,
- 22:42Speaker 1: I mean, I think the getting the ball down field
- 22:46Speaker 1: is important, and I think they will. We saw some
- 22:48Speaker 1: of that already in mini camp, but it just to
- 22:51Speaker 1: give the defense something else to think about. Yeah, you know, yeah,
- 22:54Speaker 1: I think it's the you know, the contested catchability of
- 22:57Speaker 1: Parker and the speed of Agalore on the outside. But
- 22:59Speaker 1: I mean, I I think all those things are totally
- 23:01Speaker 1: totally correct, and you know, I would assume the operation
- 23:04Speaker 1: is better with with just having more command. But I
- 23:06Speaker 1: just want to see pace. I want to see the
- 23:08Speaker 1: offense hit their stride and and you know, we saw
- 23:12Speaker 1: it a lot with with Brady offense, when you just
- 23:14Speaker 1: get rolling and the other team is scrambling to try
- 23:18Speaker 1: to figure out what you're doing. Like, I'd like to
- 23:21Speaker 1: see that a few times. I think there were, you know,
- 23:22Speaker 1: a couple of little glimmers of it, you know, namely
- 23:25Speaker 1: against Cleveland last year. But seeing him fully grass the
- 23:28Speaker 1: offense and being able to put a defense on its
- 23:30Speaker 1: heels and not have answers for a long Yeah, what
- 23:33Speaker 1: that would be it for me. I've said it many times.
- 23:35Speaker 1: I never want to hear another team say the Patriots
- 23:37Speaker 1: are easy to defend again. Yeah, you know, that's the
- 23:40Speaker 1: It's in all my years here, it's the first time
- 23:43Speaker 1: I've ever heard opponents say that. Yeah, you know, and yeah,
- 23:48Speaker 1: I mean, you can't make it easy for the other team.
- 23:51Speaker 1: And I just I mean, you know, I think it's
- 23:54Speaker 1: it's a little too simple just to connect it to
- 23:56Speaker 1: not having the guys. I mean, I just think it's
- 23:57Speaker 1: a full offensive thing, you know, and that's that kind
- 23:59Speaker 1: of to the pace and you know, we're not afraid
- 24:02Speaker 1: to throw it downfield to take a speed shot to
- 24:04Speaker 1: Agalore or you know, if if if Parker's lined up
- 24:07Speaker 1: with with a height advantage over, we're not afraid to
- 24:09Speaker 1: try to push that. But you know, but still, I
- 24:12Speaker 1: think it's the inside. It's the Bourns and the and
- 24:14Speaker 1: the Myers and the you know, consistency and bam bam bam,
- 24:17Speaker 1: and all of a sudden, Stevenson's about to run, you know,
- 24:19Speaker 1: on their dime package and he's just running over defensive back.
- 24:22Speaker 1: You know, those kind of things where it's not easy
- 24:25Speaker 1: to defend because they've got all kinds of different answers
- 24:27Speaker 1: to what you're gonna try to do. You know, you
- 24:29Speaker 1: come out in the same look, but you run a
- 24:31Speaker 1: different play. That's the key. Yeah, you know, um, Dominics
- 24:35Speaker 1: in New York. What's up Dominic? Hey? How is everyone doing? Okay?
- 24:41Speaker 1: Look at awesome? Just going back through conversation Alex had previously.
- 24:46Speaker 1: I'm a track guy. I ran track for Spelling and Brockton.
- 24:50Speaker 1: I remember my fair share people is spilling out during
- 24:53Speaker 1: the hurdles. Usually were very supportive, even though it's very
- 24:57Speaker 1: during the hurdles. Yeah, yeah, you see the spills out,
- 25:01Speaker 1: the spell out during the you know, the like whatever
- 25:04Speaker 1: whatever hurdle being is that what they call it spilling
- 25:07Speaker 1: out like the lack of a Oh yeah, Fred wasn't
- 25:14Speaker 1: here for my most embarrassing sports moment, but I heard
- 25:16Speaker 1: the tape. Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah yeah. But um. But
- 25:22Speaker 1: going back to my point, one of the things that
- 25:24Speaker 1: I'm curious about is between the wide receiver battle. I
- 25:27Speaker 1: have my standout, of course, I think Trey Nixon's going
- 25:30Speaker 1: to be standout. I'm curious to see how the receivers
- 25:33Speaker 1: operate at the you know, the short, intermediate and deep level, right,
- 25:38Speaker 1: so you don't have a you don't want to have
- 25:39Speaker 1: another Nikkiel Harry Flasso where there was no separation. You're
- 25:43Speaker 1: catching tough, contested balls all the time. So I'm curious
- 25:46Speaker 1: that's something now you'll be looking forward in Camp. Um
- 25:49Speaker 1: hopefully too steps up. I also think there will be
- 25:51Speaker 1: a surprise Camp standout in Christian Wilkerson. Yeah. I'm not
- 25:55Speaker 1: saying he's gonna be a contributor, but I think he's
- 25:57Speaker 1: gonna play very well. He's another guy we haven't mentioned
- 26:01Speaker 1: that had production last year. Yeah yeah, yeah, he did
- 26:06Speaker 1: get separation. When he did, he had a tough time.
- 26:08Speaker 1: He can you know, his hands on the ball. But
- 26:10Speaker 1: but yeah, he did get it. Yeah, yeah, I mean
- 26:13Speaker 1: I just yeah, god. Yeah. So my question is is
- 26:18Speaker 1: that will you be looking for in camp as well?
- 26:20Speaker 1: And also who are your surprised cut because I have
- 26:24Speaker 1: James White as being a surprise, but Nelson Aguil or
- 26:28Speaker 1: kinda and believe it or not, Gayleen Mills, because I
- 26:32Speaker 1: really expect Marcus Jones to step up conna Ellis Hobbs,
- 26:35Speaker 1: you know how he's a good special teamers, okay, coverage guy.
- 26:39Speaker 1: Maybe could contribute at that end, but I think he'll
- 26:41Speaker 1: actually pop a little bit more than people. But yeah, well,
- 26:45Speaker 1: I guess we've got to look at Marcus Jones. But
- 26:47Speaker 1: I mean Jack Jones was in the mix. I mean,
- 26:48Speaker 1: I don't think it's crazy to say that about Mills.
- 26:50Speaker 1: But I also think he's the most experienced and the
- 26:52Speaker 1: only guy, and I think that he's a little bit,
- 26:54Speaker 1: you know, just under rated last year as to what
- 26:56Speaker 1: he did. But but I don't think it's um it's
- 26:58Speaker 1: too crazy. I think the contestic catch thing, it's it's
- 27:03Speaker 1: it's a part of the game. But I just hate
- 27:04Speaker 1: how it kind of gets such a spotlight on it
- 27:07Speaker 1: because I kind of agree with what I think he's
- 27:09Speaker 1: saying in that it's not really an effective way to
- 27:12Speaker 1: build an offense to rely on guys who are really
- 27:14Speaker 1: good at contestic catches, Like you know, I'd rather have
- 27:16Speaker 1: guys that are really good at getting away from people. Um.
- 27:19Speaker 1: But that said, I mean, I think Parker is as
- 27:21Speaker 1: good as anybody at the league at doing it. So
- 27:24Speaker 1: you know, that said, I think you know we did.
- 27:25Speaker 1: We did see I think one catch in minicamp that was,
- 27:28Speaker 1: you know, kind of a contestic catch to Parker on
- 27:30Speaker 1: the sideline. So I think that's part of it. I
- 27:32Speaker 1: think it with aglor speed, as I said, those guys
- 27:34Speaker 1: on the outside, I think that's kind of a combination
- 27:37Speaker 1: that that they're going to play with to try to
- 27:38Speaker 1: stretch the field a little bit. But again, the contestic
- 27:41Speaker 1: catch stuff, it is, what is that it? I just
- 27:43Speaker 1: don't think it's as as Paul would and I would
- 27:45Speaker 1: say sustainable. I do. But you know, you can't always
- 27:50Speaker 1: get separation, especially in the NFL, so you know you
- 27:53Speaker 1: have to, you know, have guys that can do that.
- 27:55Speaker 1: You know, it's not like Alabama where you know, Waddle's
- 27:59Speaker 1: just running down the field, you know, wide open. You
- 28:03Speaker 1: need guys who can catch the ball when there's someone
- 28:06Speaker 1: there defending them, you know, in their face, and there
- 28:09Speaker 1: is a skill to it. And I think Nikola Harry
- 28:10Speaker 1: left a little bit of a bad taste in her
- 28:12Speaker 1: mouth just because he was a big guy and you
- 28:14Speaker 1: expected him to be good at it, but somehow he
- 28:16Speaker 1: tended to get out physical for the ball and so
- 28:19Speaker 1: that maybe puts a little bit of a damper on
- 28:22Speaker 1: how you feel about those kind of players. But I
- 28:23Speaker 1: mean you can't. You can also look at Randy Moss
- 28:26Speaker 1: and that nobody better that can test it catches than him,
- 28:28Speaker 1: and it's like he's uncoverable. You know, when you're right
- 28:30Speaker 1: in front of him, he can go up and get it.
- 28:32Speaker 1: So you know, it's something to be said. I just
- 28:34Speaker 1: again engine Born Myers, Nixon, those kind of guys, and well,
- 28:38Speaker 1: you know and think about it, you know, And and
- 28:40Speaker 1: thanks for the call, Doman, I appreciate it. If you're
- 28:44Speaker 1: not willing to throw as a quarterback to guys who
- 28:47Speaker 1: are covered, that really limits you. Yeah, that really limits you.
- 28:51Speaker 1: You know. Now a guy has to be open for
- 28:53Speaker 1: me to get rid of the ball, you know. And
- 28:55Speaker 1: so now that that and what happens then is you
- 28:59Speaker 1: have quarterbacks who just pull it down and run or whatever.
- 29:01Speaker 1: And you know, they just they just never get it off.
- 29:04Speaker 1: And you have to be confident in your receivers because
- 29:07Speaker 1: if you have guys that can make those fifty fifty catches,
- 29:11Speaker 1: that opens up that now you can stay on time, yeah,
- 29:14Speaker 1: you know, in the pocket. And so you can't just
- 29:17Speaker 1: rely on guys in the NFL just getting open and
- 29:20Speaker 1: then I'll throw it to them. Yeah, And I think,
- 29:22Speaker 1: I mean, I think in Mac two, like you know,
- 29:24Speaker 1: one of his strengths is anticipation and throwing, you know,
- 29:27Speaker 1: before the guy is on his brake. And so hopefully
- 29:30Speaker 1: this year he's able to identify those matchups a little
- 29:32Speaker 1: bit and know, all right, this is the time to
- 29:35Speaker 1: take a shot to Agalora because he's got a speed
- 29:37Speaker 1: advantage or or you know, like I was saying with
- 29:38Speaker 1: Parker with height advantage, or you know, knowing his weapons,
- 29:41Speaker 1: having a familiarity with these guys that he's been working
- 29:43Speaker 1: with for you know, two years and all through the
- 29:45Speaker 1: summer now, you know, and having confidence in them, like
- 29:48Speaker 1: you said, to let them, you know, go up and
- 29:49Speaker 1: make plays on them. And at the in worst case,
- 29:51Speaker 1: it's going to be an incomplete because I know that
- 29:54Speaker 1: if I underthrow this a little bit or whatever, my
- 29:57Speaker 1: receiver's going to turn into a defender and he won't
- 30:01Speaker 1: let the other guy catch it either. So it's it's
- 30:03Speaker 1: just that confidence. And you know, if you don't have that,
- 30:06Speaker 1: then you're really limited. You're limiting your quarterback if you
- 30:09Speaker 1: don't have guys that can go up and get it. Yeah.
- 30:12Speaker 1: I wonder too, how much of we'll see Mac get
- 30:15Speaker 1: a little bit uh po that guys. This. You know
- 30:18Speaker 1: what Brady used to do when it's not quite the
- 30:20Speaker 1: way I want it. I mean, we saw him in
- 30:22Speaker 1: camp kind of walking routes for guys. You know how
- 30:25Speaker 1: much ownership does matter? I mean I think he took
- 30:27Speaker 1: has taken a ton of ownership of from what I
- 30:29Speaker 1: saw on the field in the spring. But yeah, when when, when,
- 30:32Speaker 1: when it's his fault, you'll know it, um. And when
- 30:34Speaker 1: it's somebody else's fault, I think you'll know it too. Um.
- 30:37Speaker 1: And that gets back to what Patty said. You know,
- 30:39Speaker 1: he wants to limit those delay of games that he
- 30:41Speaker 1: saw last year. Yeah, there were some, and a lot
- 30:44Speaker 1: of them were on Mac, but not all of them,
- 30:46Speaker 1: not all of Because I remember him walking to the
- 30:49Speaker 1: sideline with palms up, like, what are we doing guys? Yeah,
- 30:52Speaker 1: it wasn't always his fault. And I saw a stat
- 30:55Speaker 1: too that because we've also, you know, Paul and I
- 30:58Speaker 1: are talking about taking sacks, you know, not identifying protection
- 31:03Speaker 1: correctly and not knowing where the free rushers coming and
- 31:05Speaker 1: getting blasted. And I saw a stat and I believe
- 31:07Speaker 1: it was from PF that that he only allowed one
- 31:09Speaker 1: all season long, where like the sack was on him.
- 31:12Speaker 1: I take it for what it is. I don't know,
- 31:14Speaker 1: but I think it's all It's all kind of connected though.
- 31:17Speaker 1: And even if you couldn't point to the stats and
- 31:19Speaker 1: say X y Z is where he ranked in terms
- 31:22Speaker 1: of you know, pre snap penalties and all that, I
- 31:24Speaker 1: just think that whole operation will be smoother. He'll have
- 31:27Speaker 1: more control and confidence in knowing what he's doing, and
- 31:29Speaker 1: we'll be able to get everybody on the same page
- 31:31Speaker 1: and and get the ball out quick. A lot of
- 31:34Speaker 1: emails coming in. One is from Peter and he's from Ottawa.
- 31:39Speaker 1: I think Peter's brought us lunch before. Just wanted to
- 31:44Speaker 1: chime in and say how much I'm enjoying the addition
- 31:46Speaker 1: of Alex to the show. Thanks Peter. Oh, she is
- 31:49Speaker 1: bringing lots to the table. I have to say it
- 31:51Speaker 1: was really pleased when she started talking about diet. I've
- 31:54Speaker 1: been listening to you guys for years, and I'm so
- 31:57Speaker 1: happy there is someone there who finally knows the right
- 31:59Speaker 1: way to eat. Define right way. I mean, I have
- 32:05Speaker 1: fun eating and I find it the right way. Are
- 32:07Speaker 1: you in a dark place right now with you're eating? Friend? Yeah? Anyway,
- 32:11Speaker 1: high protein and fat is the way to go. No
- 32:14Speaker 1: vegetable oils, little amount of carbs. I've been eating this
- 32:17Speaker 1: way for years. I'm in the best shape of my life.
- 32:19Speaker 1: I just wish she could get Paul to stop drinking
- 32:22Speaker 1: diet soda. The stuff is terrible for him. Pete, I'm
- 32:25Speaker 1: gonna get these guys on a meal planet. We're going
- 32:27Speaker 1: to run an experiment. Maybe you can help me there. Now,
- 32:32Speaker 1: diet soda, right, yeah, there's no calories in it? Correct?
- 32:35Speaker 1: So why is it bad for you? When you're taking
- 32:38Speaker 1: out actual sugar, they're sweetening it with all these chemicals
- 32:43Speaker 1: and crap. I don't know that stuff's like made in
- 32:45Speaker 1: a lab. That can't be good for you. Okay, this
- 32:47Speaker 1: is why it's bad for you, no matter what soda
- 32:50Speaker 1: in general. When in nature, when when we are a
- 32:54Speaker 1: hunter and gatherers, were we getting that much sugar into
- 32:58Speaker 1: our system at once? You never heard of sugar is
- 33:01Speaker 1: the carbonated rivers of Canadas. It's a shock to your system,
- 33:11Speaker 1: like a total shocked there, Like why are we getting
- 33:14Speaker 1: all this show? Not me? I've been doing it since
- 33:16Speaker 1: I was four years old. My body's used to go,
- 33:19Speaker 1: I actually saw something and this is another thing, Like
- 33:21Speaker 1: I saw something on the internet, so it must be true.
- 33:23Speaker 1: Um that they're like disoda, really, isn't that for you?
- 33:26Speaker 1: Like I've always been on the trainers like it's not really.
- 33:28Speaker 1: I mean, I don't enjoy the taste of disoda, but um,
- 33:30Speaker 1: I don't know. I heard the reason why I heard
- 33:33Speaker 1: the reason why it's bad for you is that people
- 33:36Speaker 1: who tend people who drink a lot of diet soda
- 33:40Speaker 1: tend to think, oh I'm good, and then they eat
- 33:43Speaker 1: a huge bag of chips with it, you know, so
- 33:46Speaker 1: like false sense. Yeah, it's a false sense of security
- 33:49Speaker 1: and then you you go overboard on other things. Yeah,
- 33:52Speaker 1: I meant soda contains aspartine, which is a leaning cause
- 33:55Speaker 1: of Alzheimer's. Pause. Paul doesn't forget any you forgot where
- 34:00Speaker 1: put it? Yeah, not affecting again, he's not the model
- 34:04Speaker 1: for that. But uh, I mean I will say that
- 34:07Speaker 1: when I started dating my wife, she got she got
- 34:09Speaker 1: me to just not. I mean, I still drink soda,
- 34:11Speaker 1: I still dink drink gatorade. I just don't buy it
- 34:13Speaker 1: at the supermarket. I don't have it in my house,
- 34:15Speaker 1: so I don't consume as much. And I instantly lost
- 34:17Speaker 1: like ten pounds just not having gatorade. And yeah, and
- 34:20Speaker 1: you're not drinking your calories. It's makes such and that's
- 34:24Speaker 1: and that was a switch I made, was to water
- 34:26Speaker 1: and just constantly drinking water. Part of it was like
- 34:29Speaker 1: work thing too, or I just constantly drink water. So
- 34:30Speaker 1: I'm like, you know, I'll get up. I'd have to
- 34:32Speaker 1: go with that room and come. You know, it just
- 34:33Speaker 1: keeps you. Well, that's the other thing they said, you know,
- 34:36Speaker 1: like even though like diet sodas ninety percent water or
- 34:39Speaker 1: orange juice is ninety percent water, whatever, is it true
- 34:43Speaker 1: that like if it's not water, your body processes it
- 34:46Speaker 1: different and thinks, oh, this is food, I'm gonna process
- 34:49Speaker 1: it different. Or because they say, like, you know, just
- 34:52Speaker 1: drink water. Don't don't drink you know, just drink water.
- 34:56Speaker 1: It's better for you. Yeah, coconut water too, that's a
- 34:58Speaker 1: natural source, truly sweetened um. Definitely some goods lights. Yeah,
- 35:06Speaker 1: but I like coconut water. I like coconut water too. Yeah,
- 35:09Speaker 1: as long as you don't go over and board too,
- 35:10Speaker 1: because that'll blow you in. Put on some weight too,
- 35:13Speaker 1: is that right? Yeah? Yeah, but I still there are
- 35:17Speaker 1: just times when I think a coke and a bag
- 35:19Speaker 1: of popcorn. That's just yeah, one of my best friends. Like,
- 35:22Speaker 1: I mean, typically it is after a night of drinking.
- 35:24Speaker 1: But the way this girl craves a McDonald's fountain coke,
- 35:29Speaker 1: oh yeah, yeah, the fountain like a fountain with crushed ice,
- 35:32Speaker 1: That to me is just soda, soda perfection. Yeah, let's
- 35:37Speaker 1: see Colin and Rutgers writes in congratulations to Danny Amandola
- 35:41Speaker 1: and his retirement, He's always one of my favorite players.
- 35:43Speaker 1: Once the key guys from the Dynasty years get into
- 35:46Speaker 1: the Patriots Hall of Fame, do you think guys see
- 35:48Speaker 1: Danny Amondola getting in his clutch playoff performances stand out
- 35:52Speaker 1: to me when I think back on his time with
- 35:54Speaker 1: the Patriots, and I'm just curious if that would be
- 35:57Speaker 1: enough to get him in. I don't think so. I mean,
- 36:00Speaker 1: I love the guy, but like at a certain point,
- 36:02Speaker 1: you can't put anybody who made one or two big
- 36:05Speaker 1: plays in the super Bowl into the Hall of Fame, like,
- 36:07Speaker 1: you know, like I think that's kind of the Edelman thing.
- 36:09Speaker 1: I think Edelman goes beyond that and is definitely in UM.
- 36:13Speaker 1: And same thing with High Tower, Like I feel like
- 36:15Speaker 1: High Tower he made a bunch of major plays. I
- 36:18Speaker 1: think the difference in the defense when High Tower was
- 36:20Speaker 1: in him was out was market. But speaking of High Tower,
- 36:24Speaker 1: have we heard anything. I was going to bring that
- 36:26Speaker 1: up earlier, but still not a peep. And it's so strange,
- 36:29Speaker 1: isn't it weird trying to figure out I don't get it,
- 36:31Speaker 1: and like not even like a think I might retire,
- 36:35Speaker 1: would be open to visits or yeah, he's very He's
- 36:38Speaker 1: not a big social media guy. No good for him.
- 36:40Speaker 1: He has been posting, though, at least his wife has.
- 36:43Speaker 1: I follow them both and it looks like they've been
- 36:44Speaker 1: having a great summer with the kids. Yea, his dog.
- 36:48Speaker 1: Do you see that the billboard here here in near
- 36:50Speaker 1: Jilest Sadium themselves like seems anti Dante or like it's
- 36:54Speaker 1: I don't know, I just always see him is like
- 36:56Speaker 1: this big, badass linebacker and he's like a little little
- 36:58Speaker 1: dog up on the maybe kind of you know, he
- 37:01Speaker 1: and Bill have kind of an agreement, will just keep
- 37:03Speaker 1: you in the background and if if we need you,
- 37:06Speaker 1: I I you know, as much as I am banging
- 37:09Speaker 1: the drum, and they got to find some new guys,
- 37:10Speaker 1: and they certainly do. I would always take Dante high
- 37:13Speaker 1: Tower back. Um, you know, I don't. I don't know
- 37:15Speaker 1: if he can come needs to come back and play
- 37:16Speaker 1: every down, but I think that there's always a place
- 37:18Speaker 1: for it. But to me now at this point, that
- 37:21Speaker 1: means it ain't working out. It ain't working out, you know,
- 37:23Speaker 1: well you know, but I'd rather the year off too
- 37:25Speaker 1: that gave me. I love him like he is one
- 37:28Speaker 1: of my favorite players of my lifetime, watching the pads,
- 37:31Speaker 1: like that's the era I grew up with and like
- 37:34Speaker 1: I don't know, those clutch plays and such a presence.
- 37:37Speaker 1: He's such a presence. But you're right, But like the
- 37:40Speaker 1: thing I keep going back to is like, just get
- 37:44Speaker 1: the best team you can possibly get. And I'm sorry
- 37:47Speaker 1: if Anthony Jennings or Josh Ucha aren't set in the edge,
- 37:50Speaker 1: like you know, to the level that you would have hoped.
- 37:52Speaker 1: If you feel like Dante high Tower can still do
- 37:54Speaker 1: it better, just to bring them back. I know it stinks,
- 37:57Speaker 1: but you know, just don't don't try to prove a point.
- 37:59Speaker 1: I wish Paul here because you know, let let the
- 38:01Speaker 1: kids play. I know, no, I know that would that
- 38:03Speaker 1: would be good. We will talk about it. Joey Wrights
- 38:06Speaker 1: saying he's from Texas. I feel like our wide receiver
- 38:09Speaker 1: group is pretty good, but not great with so many receivers,
- 38:13Speaker 1: do you guys think Mac Jones will find it difficult
- 38:15Speaker 1: to build chemistry with everyone. Typically the quarterback usually has
- 38:19Speaker 1: his favorites, but since Mac is fairly new to New England,
- 38:22Speaker 1: how does he even pick his favorite wide receivers? Since
- 38:25Speaker 1: there really isn't a great and obvious pick. I don't know,
- 38:29Speaker 1: don't you? I mean, isn't an argument to be said
- 38:30Speaker 1: that it's good that he doesn't just have one guy
- 38:33Speaker 1: that's awesome and it's trying to feed him, and that
- 38:35Speaker 1: he's got to find this offense himself, and that they've
- 38:38Speaker 1: given him a number of different styles of targets to
- 38:41Speaker 1: work with, and I think it's not to force feed anybody.
- 38:44Speaker 1: Usually it doesn't take long in camp for that to
- 38:46Speaker 1: shape out. You see it like nothing is declared, you know,
- 38:49Speaker 1: they don't ever tell you these are our five or
- 38:52Speaker 1: six guys, but you usually can tell within the first
- 38:56Speaker 1: couple of weeks what you know, who's who's been working
- 39:00Speaker 1: out with these guys, Like even little Jordan Humphreys spotted
- 39:03Speaker 1: in the background of one of those little offseason on Yeah.
- 39:08Speaker 1: I love it. I mean I love all that stuff.
- 39:11Speaker 1: Mike writes in in twenty twenty two. Can we get
- 39:14Speaker 1: the live visuals to go along with the podcast? Fred,
- 39:17Speaker 1: please shell out the extra money to make this happen. Oh,
- 39:21Speaker 1: they want like a like a live, like a live
- 39:23Speaker 1: they want to see I mean, we've had this before.
- 39:26Speaker 1: It's like, like, what's the point after you see us
- 39:29Speaker 1: for five minutes? So you're really going to just watch
- 39:31Speaker 1: us talk, you know, unless you had somebody actually like
- 39:34Speaker 1: producing the show and putting graphic absolutely and little puppets
- 39:37Speaker 1: like they do on on the Hub with their live
- 39:40Speaker 1: feeds and stuff, I don't know. I mean maybe you're
- 39:43Speaker 1: really seeing though a lot of those pivots to the simulcast.
- 39:47Speaker 1: I think it's probably because people can take the clips
- 39:48Speaker 1: and post them on social and it's like added exposure.
- 39:51Speaker 1: I mean maybe now that John Dickerson has mentioned us, uh,
- 39:55Speaker 1: who's the Slate podcast? Maybe you know it's not a
- 39:58Speaker 1: sports guy, you know, no even a sports guy face
- 40:01Speaker 1: the nation with CBS. We should start putting that on
- 40:03Speaker 1: the tagboard of like the oldest running podcast since nineteen Yes,
- 40:07Speaker 1: we should, right, just get like the quotes and then
- 40:10Speaker 1: the Patriots unfiltered. Nobody's older. We gotta get some some advertise,
- 40:15Speaker 1: you know, like some pump it up like the oldest
- 40:17Speaker 1: running pot sports podcast. We should have gotten a billboard
- 40:19Speaker 1: for training camp right Well, Dante High Tower Again, he
- 40:21Speaker 1: took that one with his dog, so um Jack writes
- 40:25Speaker 1: in for Manaba, the prevailing wisdom is that Cole Strange
- 40:29Speaker 1: will replace Ted Carross at left guard on opening day
- 40:32Speaker 1: this season. Well it really wasn't Ted Carross last year either.
- 40:37Speaker 1: In all the hullaballoo about the Patriots first round pick,
- 40:41Speaker 1: the question of who will replace Carrass as the Patriots
- 40:44Speaker 1: backup center has been overlooked. Backup center is an important position.
- 40:49Speaker 1: I don't think James Ferns is good enough to be
- 40:52Speaker 1: even a backup center in the NFL. Who's going to
- 40:55Speaker 1: be the Patriots backup center on opening Day? Well Strange.
- 40:58Speaker 1: I mean he did it at the Senior Bowl. They
- 41:00Speaker 1: threw him in there, and I mean everybody probably saw
- 41:02Speaker 1: the snaps ahead. Well, no, he has played center, but
- 41:05Speaker 1: he has played too. But the problem is, Okay, so
- 41:07Speaker 1: Cole Stranger is just starting left guard, he's doing well,
- 41:09Speaker 1: Andrews goes down. You don't want to move Cole Strange
- 41:12Speaker 1: out of left guard because now you're you know, moving
- 41:14Speaker 1: two positions. Yeah, you know, So I get Jack's point.
- 41:19Speaker 1: You know who really is um and who is it
- 41:22Speaker 1: right right now? Yeah? Other than Cole Strange, who probably
- 41:26Speaker 1: will Sherman or yes here Durant. Yeah, you know, guy,
- 41:29Speaker 1: I mean guys who have played. I mean not so
- 41:31Speaker 1: much Sherman, but I mean Durant has played. But I
- 41:34Speaker 1: think that that's that's a bigger question of what does
- 41:36Speaker 1: the second level of the line look like? How good?
- 41:39Speaker 1: You know it's justin Harran is the backup and we
- 41:41Speaker 1: all know that these tackles don't have the best injury history,
- 41:44Speaker 1: so you know, is it just a matter of time
- 41:45Speaker 1: before Yadney could just or Haran get get kind of
- 41:48Speaker 1: thrust in, and you know that's not even getting into
- 41:50Speaker 1: then the interior part of the equation. But I feel
- 41:52Speaker 1: fine with Farren's I think he's been able to you know,
- 41:55Speaker 1: a record book. No, can you turn off that other mike?
- 41:58Speaker 1: Is that mike on right next to you? But yeah, okay,
- 42:05Speaker 1: I just wasn't feedback. Yeah, I'm just I just want
- 42:07Speaker 1: to make sure we don't have any mics on that
- 42:09Speaker 1: we don't need on. But I was I was talking
- 42:11Speaker 1: upstairs again about I think it's a really interesting year
- 42:15Speaker 1: for the one on ones and last year Barmore was
- 42:19Speaker 1: unblockable in the one on ones? Um did they stick
- 42:22Speaker 1: Cold Strange against Barmore? You know do we see that
- 42:24Speaker 1: rap a couple of times? Because I mean Barmore was
- 42:26Speaker 1: putting Shack Mason on his back, you know, last last year,
- 42:29Speaker 1: so uh, you know that's kind of a double edged
- 42:32Speaker 1: sword of like, well, I'm really excited about Barmore. Too
- 42:34Speaker 1: bad he was going through Cold Strange. But you know,
- 42:36Speaker 1: just what do those look like? What do those reps
- 42:37Speaker 1: look like? How do these new guys? Yeah, I really
- 42:40Speaker 1: hope that other guys can step up because you know,
- 42:43Speaker 1: Barmore can't do it by himself. And now he's got
- 42:45Speaker 1: a year of tape, so teams, he's no secret. Teams know, Okay,
- 42:49Speaker 1: we gotta we gotta account for this guy. He's pretty good.
- 42:52Speaker 1: So you know, second year can either be that second
- 42:54Speaker 1: year jump or we know this guy now and he disappears.
- 42:57Speaker 1: So I think he's that good. But there's you know,
- 43:01Speaker 1: he's not you know, a Dominican sue as in his
- 43:05Speaker 1: second year, he's gonna need some help around him so
- 43:08Speaker 1: he can do his thing. I think my big question
- 43:10Speaker 1: with Barmore, and we can get into this too in
- 43:13Speaker 1: the second hour, it is just you know, can he
- 43:16Speaker 1: can he get after Ta and the RPO stuff. Can
- 43:18Speaker 1: he get into the backfield and blow it up? Well, see,
- 43:21Speaker 1: this is the thing he can. I don't expect him
- 43:24Speaker 1: to make the tackle, but if he can disrupt it.
- 43:27Speaker 1: Now what we're the thing that we've been crying for
- 43:29Speaker 1: a last couple of years. Speed on the edge. Now
- 43:32Speaker 1: this is where these guys that we don't have answers
- 43:35Speaker 1: to have to come in the josh uchees and all that,
- 43:38Speaker 1: and they clean up. But he causes him to you know,
- 43:42Speaker 1: to move off the spot. Um, that's that's why, like
- 43:46Speaker 1: I said, like I would have loved one of these smaller,
- 43:49Speaker 1: fast linebackers in the draft, guys that can go either direction,
- 43:53Speaker 1: sideline to sideline to help you know when Barmore or
- 43:57Speaker 1: whoever in the middle, you know, disrupts it. Now up, Yeah,
- 44:02Speaker 1: Well it's you know, I said many times, think about
- 44:06Speaker 1: the divisional quarterbacks, and you've really had no answers for
- 44:08Speaker 1: two of the last two years. You really certainly don't
- 44:10Speaker 1: have any answers for Josh Allen. Not really anybody else
- 44:13Speaker 1: does either. But you know what what what's being done
- 44:16Speaker 1: to do that? And I think you know you're you're
- 44:18Speaker 1: having a young, fast linebacker is a good one. Jabrill Peppers, like,
- 44:22Speaker 1: how do we have these four safeties? You have all
- 44:24Speaker 1: three safeties return and who played and and and and
- 44:27Speaker 1: you know, Phillips and Dugger were all in the box,
- 44:30Speaker 1: all around on the edge in the I mean just
- 44:32Speaker 1: everywhere upfront. How does Peppers feel into that? And and
- 44:34Speaker 1: is Peppers as much as he's on pup and overcoming
- 44:37Speaker 1: an injury, how much does he relate into that linebacker
- 44:40Speaker 1: that they maybe didn't take. Is he signify some kind
- 44:44Speaker 1: of response to this Josh Allen offense that of course,
- 44:47Speaker 1: it's like, you know, even when you get him, he's
- 44:49Speaker 1: he's running anyway. I think you know, on defense, once
- 44:53Speaker 1: once the once the once the snap has happened, it's
- 44:58Speaker 1: not as much and it's not a run play. Okay,
- 45:00Speaker 1: So the run in a passing play, it's not about
- 45:03Speaker 1: size anymore. It's about speed. Yeah, you know, it doesn't
- 45:05Speaker 1: matter how big you are if you can get to
- 45:07Speaker 1: the ball, wrap up, wait for help. You know. Now, obviously,
- 45:11Speaker 1: if it's a running play, you know you don't want
- 45:13Speaker 1: to be moved off your spot. But if it's a
- 45:15Speaker 1: pass playing like you mentioned, guys like Kyler Murray or
- 45:18Speaker 1: to Uh or Josh Allen, really almost all the quarterbacks
- 45:22Speaker 1: they're gonna play this year, once the play starts, it's
- 45:25Speaker 1: about speed. Yeah, it's all about speed. That's why I wonder,
- 45:29Speaker 1: like I said earlier, is the no linebacker defense gonna
- 45:32Speaker 1: be all bust thing this year? Is that you know
- 45:34Speaker 1: what counter a guy like your Bill Peppers or any
- 45:37Speaker 1: of these safeties. Just because they don't have an LB
- 45:40Speaker 1: after their name doesn't mean they can't be the guy
- 45:43Speaker 1: cleaning up within two yards of the line of scrimage
- 45:45Speaker 1: and both those, both Dugger and Dam coming out, a
- 45:48Speaker 1: lot of people thought they might be linebackers in a
- 45:50Speaker 1: certain systems. So yeah, I mean it's it's it's a
- 45:53Speaker 1: little bit semantics of you know, Bill said today, we're
- 45:55Speaker 1: not really into coaching titles. I don't really think they're
- 45:56Speaker 1: into position titles either when we talk about the position
- 45:58Speaker 1: of the defense. But you know that that that's something
- 46:01Speaker 1: to keep an eye and I do think mac Wilson's
- 46:03Speaker 1: a little bit of of a of a wild card
- 46:05Speaker 1: in that regard because he can run and he's quick,
- 46:07Speaker 1: and you know he's he's not um the big kind
- 46:10Speaker 1: of traditional linebacker, but he's tough. So how does he
- 46:13Speaker 1: fit into things? I think that's an element too. And
- 46:15Speaker 1: this is Paul hates this. Paul hates it when you say,
- 46:17Speaker 1: you know, they're really going to be a scheme based defense.
- 46:20Speaker 1: They're not going to have the superstar that you know,
- 46:23Speaker 1: teams have to game plan, but they're gonna play well
- 46:25Speaker 1: together because they're gonna be game planned up before each game.
- 46:29Speaker 1: They're gonna have assignments and if they can do their assignment,
- 46:32Speaker 1: you know, you know, Paul will he hates that because
- 46:35Speaker 1: you know, yeah, you need talent, but I do believe
- 46:39Speaker 1: on defense, not necessarily, but on defense, if you have
- 46:44Speaker 1: guys that all can do their job well, you can
- 46:47Speaker 1: be okay. Yeah, I mean I still I mean that
- 46:50Speaker 1: still speaks to like the core of what I believe
- 46:53Speaker 1: of football, that you know, a well coached team playing
- 46:55Speaker 1: together will beat a team that has maybe more talent
- 46:58Speaker 1: but aren't playing together. And I don't know, I don't
- 47:00Speaker 1: think anyone will convince me. Certainly there are games where
- 47:02Speaker 1: talent just takes over and happens, but not to say
- 47:04Speaker 1: that you should actively not pursue talent. But you know,
- 47:08Speaker 1: I just I still have hope. I still have hope
- 47:09Speaker 1: even though there are a lot of questions on the
- 47:11Speaker 1: defensive side of the ball. And I mean I would
- 47:13Speaker 1: almost apply it more to the offense as well. Like
- 47:15Speaker 1: I know, they don't have that great a superstar that
- 47:18Speaker 1: everyone is in love with right now, and if you
- 47:19Speaker 1: don't have a supermobile quarterback or one a receiver, you
- 47:23Speaker 1: got nothing. I think that they can still be effective
- 47:26Speaker 1: not give teams, you know, something to key on. And
- 47:28Speaker 1: I think that they could be better on offense. Like you,
- 47:31Speaker 1: I've said it I'm bullish on the offense. Yeah, I
- 47:33Speaker 1: think the offense is going to be better than people
- 47:35Speaker 1: think it's gonna be. I think it's a top ten.
- 47:37Speaker 1: I mean that's what my expectation is, and I mean
- 47:39Speaker 1: I have high expectations. But I think that they have
- 47:42Speaker 1: the pieces and it's just a matter of bringing it
- 47:43Speaker 1: together and hopefully this offensive schemeshift just helps boost that
- 47:48Speaker 1: whole that whole thing, whatever that might be. Let's get
- 47:50Speaker 1: to the phones again, the ah Sticket helpline eight five
- 47:53Speaker 1: five pats, five hundred Christians in LA. What's up Christian? Hey,
- 47:58Speaker 1: good morning guys. Then yeah, the approach training camp. Now,
- 48:03Speaker 1: are you guys going to be you guys will be
- 48:05Speaker 1: situated and someone watching the defense, someone's watching the offense,
- 48:08Speaker 1: and you communicate with each other. Or are you guys
- 48:10Speaker 1: are gonna be one group at the defensive at the offense? Noah.
- 48:13Speaker 1: I mean we're usually kind of just wherever you go.
- 48:16Speaker 1: I mean, I always it's hard. Sometimes guys are a
- 48:19Speaker 1: mile away and so you can't really plan to watch something.
- 48:22Speaker 1: Um I mentioned the one on ones. That's always something
- 48:24Speaker 1: fun to look at, but it's so we won't see
- 48:27Speaker 1: difficult We won't really see that until the pads go on. Yeah,
- 48:29Speaker 1: there's there's not this I would say the next few days.
- 48:31Speaker 1: As much as I'm excited to be out there, there's
- 48:33Speaker 1: probably not going to be a whole bunch of information
- 48:36Speaker 1: or things gleaned from it other than But it's a
- 48:38Speaker 1: it's a good question because there is a lot going
- 48:40Speaker 1: on at the same time, and you know what we
- 48:42Speaker 1: tend to do is, you know, we tie you to gravitate.
- 48:45Speaker 1: You know, uh, like Paul will be watching, you know,
- 48:48Speaker 1: what's going on with the receivers, you know, and like
- 48:52Speaker 1: du said, you know, maybe someone's watching the one on
- 48:55Speaker 1: ones between the offensive line and the defensive line. Um,
- 48:59Speaker 1: so we we do that a lot, you know. Yeah,
- 49:01Speaker 1: I mean I think the team the team periods too
- 49:03Speaker 1: or where you often get the most out of when
- 49:05Speaker 1: it's live. Um, didn't really see much real like live
- 49:09Speaker 1: ball down and distance, that kind of scrimmage stuff and
- 49:12Speaker 1: mini camps, so that stuff is Yeah, I mean that's
- 49:13Speaker 1: easy to watch too, because it's all happening right there.
- 49:16Speaker 1: Thanks Christian, Let's go to Fidel in Florida. What's up, Fidel?
- 49:21Speaker 1: Hey you guys, how are you good? Good? I actually
- 49:24Speaker 1: was calling in for a topic guys had on Thursday
- 49:27Speaker 1: about mattresses because that's actually that's right football. So he's
- 49:35Speaker 1: always selling the furniture to doll the So what do
- 49:37Speaker 1: you got, Well, my specialty is mattresses. So I was
- 49:41Speaker 1: gonna say the repetis are the best. Absolutely, I recommend
- 49:45Speaker 1: those to everyone. Uh, they are expensive, but they're not
- 49:48Speaker 1: as expensive as one I think Eric would get. U.
- 49:52Speaker 1: There's a new bed called an Intela bed. It's made
- 49:55Speaker 1: with this like jail material. It costs like ten thousand dollars.
- 50:00Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure if there was a mattress Eric, who
- 50:01Speaker 1: it would be that one. But that's not a therapeutic peutic,
- 50:05Speaker 1: right Eric. That's a different brand. And I was gonna say,
- 50:08Speaker 1: it's a shame that Paul's not on because I think
- 50:10Speaker 1: the mattress he got wasn't a therapetic. It's like one
- 50:13Speaker 1: of those off brand one. Oh, how do you know
- 50:16Speaker 1: top therapetic. It's all, oh, yeah, that's a great point.
- 50:21Speaker 1: Got temperpedic, Like you put the glass of wine and
- 50:24Speaker 1: you jump. You got one too. You can get fifty
- 50:31Speaker 1: percent off therapeutic temperpedic. All right, I'm I'm so fidel
- 50:38Speaker 1: I leave your number with I'm not in the market
- 50:41Speaker 1: right now, but I know I will eventually, and I'm
- 50:43Speaker 1: gonna hit you up for that perfect all right. So, um,
- 50:48Speaker 1: because the new convers years having about weight loss and diet,
- 50:51Speaker 1: I called a few months ago, Um, I was actually
- 50:55Speaker 1: having surgery because I had lost a lot of weight
- 50:58Speaker 1: how to get the loose skin thing off. I actually
- 51:00Speaker 1: lost like over two hundred pounds. Wow. And how I
- 51:05Speaker 1: did that was I just kind of my calories. I
- 51:08Speaker 1: didn't really think of being keto, no carbs, noing fat.
- 51:13Speaker 1: It was just like kind of my calories living myself
- 51:16Speaker 1: to this money. Yeah, so that's the weight watchers model. Yeah. Yeah,
- 51:20Speaker 1: but that's concerning because like I used like the Mistiness
- 51:24Speaker 1: talapp and just scanned everything. And there's an website called
- 51:27Speaker 1: a TDEE Calculator which your high weight age and your
- 51:32Speaker 1: sex and it tells you how much calories you need
- 51:35Speaker 1: to burn in a day and how much you need
- 51:38Speaker 1: to eat in the day just to maintain, lose or
- 51:40Speaker 1: gain weight. But now, how are you keeping track of
- 51:43Speaker 1: what nutrients you were taking in though? Like was it was?
- 51:45Speaker 1: It just like you didn't care it was strictly calorie
- 51:48Speaker 1: because I could see some other health effects kind of
- 51:50Speaker 1: playing in there. I would always have at least two
- 51:53Speaker 1: hundred twenty grams two hundred twenty grams protein, about like
- 51:57Speaker 1: four hundred grams of carbs. I work out like five
- 52:00Speaker 1: days a week and about eighty five to ninety grahams fat.
- 52:05Speaker 1: Well that's good. Over two hundred pounds. That's awesome. And
- 52:07Speaker 1: you've been able to keep it off obviously, yeah for
- 52:11Speaker 1: like five years now. Wow, that's great. Congratulations, All power
- 52:15Speaker 1: to you guys. And was it the coke that put
- 52:18Speaker 1: it on in the first place or no, it was
- 52:21Speaker 1: the pizza, the fried food, all that stuff. I would
- 52:27Speaker 1: sound like lunch here every day. That was my thing.
- 52:29Speaker 1: Sweet tea. I would drink a gown of sweet tea
- 52:32Speaker 1: in every meal. And when I realized how may calgar
- 52:35Speaker 1: and that, I was like, I can dan the diet
- 52:37Speaker 1: version that has zero calories. It tastes almost the saint.
- 52:39Speaker 1: So I'll just do that like one hundred pounds like
- 52:42Speaker 1: five months. Wow. Wow, Well that's great. Always good to
- 52:47Speaker 1: hear that success story. Yeah, thanks for Dell, And I'm
- 52:52Speaker 1: I'm all for fifty percent off tempera pedic. A nice
- 52:55Speaker 1: mattress is that now is that memory foam is a
- 52:57Speaker 1: temper it is. It's the original. It's the one that
- 52:59Speaker 1: now Asad developed that the astronauts have. I have the
- 53:03Speaker 1: memory phone. It can be a little hot. Yeah, well
- 53:05Speaker 1: they have a cool version now, I guess I don't
- 53:07Speaker 1: know how it works, but they gave us like a
- 53:10Speaker 1: like a zip up that you put around it. That's
- 53:12Speaker 1: like this cooling kind of material that that kind of helps.
- 53:15Speaker 1: But once you're kind of in it, and you know,
- 53:17Speaker 1: especially when in the humidity, it's yeah, it can be
- 53:19Speaker 1: a little tough with that, but I like it. I've
- 53:20Speaker 1: gotten used to. This is Bob's Furniture is still a sponsor.
- 53:24Speaker 1: I don't know. That's those Paul's guys. All right, So
- 53:28Speaker 1: I can't tell you where I got my mattress. We
- 53:30Speaker 1: gotta get the Bob's studio at the Bob's Discount Furniture
- 53:33Speaker 1: Studio ready for for Paul in the in the preseason game,
- 53:35Speaker 1: right Eldred's in North Carolina. Hay Aldred, Hey, ladies and gentlemen,
- 53:40Speaker 1: how y'all doing today? Good? Yeah? Yeah, I got a
- 53:43Speaker 1: couple of questions. I heard part of your earlier conversation,
- 53:47Speaker 1: like who's gonna be real second Uh maybe the guys center.
- 53:51Speaker 1: What about Damian Williams when we picked up he ste
- 53:54Speaker 1: alone art or the Daryl Williams Right, Yeah, he's been around.
- 54:00Speaker 1: I mean I don't think he's ever I mean, same thing.
- 54:03Speaker 1: He's in that mix with those second level but does
- 54:05Speaker 1: he have center experience. I'm not sure. I had him
- 54:07Speaker 1: as a guard, but he did some. ESPN has him
- 54:10Speaker 1: four or five yeah, even to get us. And don't
- 54:15Speaker 1: forget about Cody Russey too, because he got one hundred
- 54:17Speaker 1: and eighty K out of Houston, and I mean and
- 54:19Speaker 1: he was getting some action because Andrews was out in
- 54:22Speaker 1: minicamp too, so I'd put him in the mix. You know. Again,
- 54:25Speaker 1: if Paul was here, he'd be like, oh that the
- 54:27Speaker 1: numbers Center. Yeah, well I thought you were gonna say
- 54:30Speaker 1: Paul got mad at the at how much they paid
- 54:33Speaker 1: free rookie free agents like that. That's another thing. I
- 54:35Speaker 1: think that she would just get mad because we're talking
- 54:37Speaker 1: about an offensive linemen. Yeah, so what one question is Okay,
- 54:42Speaker 1: I thought cole Frame was going to the right guard
- 54:44Speaker 1: because she lost Mason, and who's the left card? So
- 54:48Speaker 1: if he go left guard, Yeah, who's gonna be the
- 54:50Speaker 1: right guard and not take it off the air. Yeah okay, yeah, yeah,
- 54:53Speaker 1: that wasn't when used college positions, So I mean he's
- 54:55Speaker 1: kind of been on a position. They tried to play
- 54:57Speaker 1: him a left guard last year and that's when Carros
- 54:59Speaker 1: came in. Um, we know we played right tackle a bunch,
- 55:01Speaker 1: but but I think right guard is something to watch
- 55:04Speaker 1: with him and and left guard is what cold strange? Yeah, Cole,
- 55:07Speaker 1: I mean we saw him minicamp. He was after the
- 55:09Speaker 1: first day right in there there he is. Yeah, yeah,
- 55:12Speaker 1: put him right in Greg's in California. Hate Greg. Hey, guys,
- 55:18Speaker 1: can you hear me? Yeah? Yeah, okay, cool. Um. First
- 55:22Speaker 1: of all, I'm the guy who called in a couple
- 55:24Speaker 1: of weeks ago and started the whole argument about Drew
- 55:27Speaker 1: Brees that happened. I was like two weeks of content. Yeah, yeah,
- 55:32Speaker 1: I was, because many people cared about that. Good question.
- 55:36Speaker 1: So my question is I didn't really watch the build
- 55:41Speaker 1: last few games of the season two close until recently.
- 55:45Speaker 1: And besides, when they played US twice, people seem to
- 55:50Speaker 1: be able to force puns on them a right, they
- 55:55Speaker 1: had our number. You see the divisional round against Kansas City,
- 55:58Speaker 1: So much. Yeah. Well, statistically speaking, we were a pretty
- 56:02Speaker 1: good defense last year. I feel like we were a
- 56:05Speaker 1: better defense than the Jet as a whole. But I
- 56:08Speaker 1: think you have to look at that like last six
- 56:10Speaker 1: games versus the rest of the season, because we had
- 56:12Speaker 1: that one stretch where we feasted on you know, the
- 56:15Speaker 1: lesser part of the league and that upped our stats,
- 56:18Speaker 1: you know, so you have to look at it in
- 56:20Speaker 1: context of each game and at the end of the season,
- 56:23Speaker 1: we just didn't do well defensively. Yeah, I mean, do
- 56:26Speaker 1: you think even at the end we were worse than
- 56:29Speaker 1: the Jets defense or the Panthers one or no. No,
- 56:33Speaker 1: I mean, in a weird way. They still would have
- 56:35Speaker 1: hammered those teams and probably completely shut them down, just
- 56:37Speaker 1: like they shut down Jacksonville. But for whatever reason, against
- 56:40Speaker 1: the good teams, they just they didn't have it. I
- 56:43Speaker 1: have no explanation for it. I don't I don't know
- 56:45Speaker 1: why this has happened in the last few years. And
- 56:48Speaker 1: thanks for the call, Greg, do you I know, you
- 56:52Speaker 1: know you don't want to make excuses, but do you
- 56:55Speaker 1: think that there was you know, guys who just got
- 56:58Speaker 1: worn out at the end of last year? I mean,
- 57:01Speaker 1: I mean, maybe but you know, like I'm why why
- 57:03Speaker 1: this year? What? Yeah? Yeah, like Matt shoot on and
- 57:06Speaker 1: you know, like did some of them just get worn out?
- 57:09Speaker 1: And that's not an excuse, but what was it the case? Yeah?
- 57:13Speaker 1: You know, I mean you could say the same thing
- 57:15Speaker 1: about you know, twenty nineteen when it was the Boogeyman
- 57:17Speaker 1: and they started out on fire and then you know,
- 57:19Speaker 1: Tennessee rolled right over them here. Um, you know, twenty
- 57:22Speaker 1: twenty down the stretch, it wasn't really coming together. Then
- 57:25Speaker 1: last year the same thing. So I just I'm looking
- 57:27Speaker 1: for a common thread in a way to say, oh, yeah,
- 57:29Speaker 1: they did, but like you know, they've kind of done
- 57:31Speaker 1: it the last three years to varying degrees, and maybe
- 57:33Speaker 1: the you know, maybe the common connective tissue is those
- 57:36Speaker 1: you know, kind of veteran linebackers that they have. But
- 57:38Speaker 1: it's hard to blame them. I mean, I really don't know.
- 57:42Speaker 1: I don't know. I'm hoping that this is a reset,
- 57:44Speaker 1: and I'm just excited for tomorrow to finally get past
- 57:47Speaker 1: that Buffalo game and no punts and get some new
- 57:50Speaker 1: football on the field and start to have new things
- 57:52Speaker 1: to talk about and give them a chance again. But
- 57:55Speaker 1: it's it's it's disconcerting. But again, you watch them against
- 57:58Speaker 1: Kansas City, watch Buffalo against it, they ain't they It's
- 58:00Speaker 1: not like oh there before. I mean, Josh Allen is
- 58:02Speaker 1: playing out of his mind last year, and if that continues,
- 58:06Speaker 1: you need to pray, you know, to beat him, because
- 58:08Speaker 1: even when you have the right coverage, he squirts out.
- 58:11Speaker 1: You know, even when you got him on fourth down,
- 58:12Speaker 1: Hey we got the fourth and two, He's just gonna
- 58:14Speaker 1: run a little quarterback, keep it right up the middle.
- 58:16Speaker 1: And you know, it's I'd love to know at a
- 58:19Speaker 1: high level what Bill Belichick thinks his defense needs to
- 58:23Speaker 1: do to compete with these kind of teams, because it's
- 58:25Speaker 1: it's frankly, it's been two years that that there haven't really,
- 58:28Speaker 1: you know, been improvement. It's just got to get defended.
- 58:31Speaker 1: These get there the Dolphins, you know, our pos and
- 58:34Speaker 1: just I would just say generally Josh Allen because I
- 58:36Speaker 1: think it's more about him than they maybe Buffalo's scheme
- 58:39Speaker 1: of a why that they're so all right, We're gonna
- 58:41Speaker 1: take a break um here on Patriots Unfiltered. When we
- 58:44Speaker 1: come back, more of your calls and emails, and in

- 1:08:18Speaker 1: when there wasn't much to talk about, you guys were
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: talking about soap. I've been thinking to myself that Evan

- 1:08:41Speaker 1: craft sports, entertainment and everything else we do. Hello, Evan, Well,
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: thank you for the introduction. Well, I was impressed, I
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: mean when you made your announcement yesterday, because I know
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: you had the world that bated breath you teased them
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: two weeks ago, and then when you made your announcement,
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: I mean, the outpouring of congratulations on Twitter was amazing.
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: Thank you, thank you. I'm so happy to be here.
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: This is amazing. Already off to a good start, I hope.
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: So yeah, yeah, see, we'll see, we'll see how you
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: wrote up. So you just came from a player availability,
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: and so we'll jump right in. What'd you hear anything interesting?
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: Some more? Praise for Mac Jones Matthew Slater saying that
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: he was biased obviously being one of his teammates, but
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: that this is Max team now and that he is
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: you know, thinks that the world of him basically, and
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: called him a great leader since the moment he stepped
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: in the building and really had a lot of nice
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: things to say about Mac off the heels of you know,
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: Belichick saying things this morning about Mac that were pretty
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: surprising to hear the language that Belichick used to describe
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: what big of a leap Mac has made this offseason.
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: So it was a lot of praise for Mac again
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: from Slater, but he also talked about being a kid
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: in school again coming back from summer break, and that's
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: sort of the feel of today and tomorrow for most
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: of the players. So we'll see how Slater feels in
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: a couple of weeks. But I mean, we all think
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: that this probably is it for him. From Matthew Slater,
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: I mean, I guess, yeah, I don't know, what is
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: he thirty eight now? I mean, he's still pushing it,
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: but yeah, still probably one of the fastest guys in
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: the team. Yeah, you know, yeah, certainly the most inspirational. Yeah,
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: what else he got for a seven? Yeah? Go ahead. Yeah. Well,
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: we talked to David Andrews as well, obviously on the
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: publist right now, who can come off at any time,
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: and he basically alluded to the fact that they have
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: no reason to rush him into training camp and he's
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: just taking it day by day. But doesn't sound at
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: least based off of what he said, that he's any
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: bit concerned or anything like that about missing any anything
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: important as we go over the next couple of weeks.
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: So Andrews made said he's making progress. There was no
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: setbacks or anything like that after he had the shoulder
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: surgery in January, so he's going to be ready to
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: go here soon. It sounds like, yeah, I mean, he's
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: a guy you don't worry about, you know, because even
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: if he misses a week or two, you know, he's
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: just gonna slip me. I do worry about him in altitude.
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: That's when I'm worried about him. With the black clots stuff. Yeah,
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: a little bit, but yeah, that'd Dmax. Anything about Jason's
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: debut on Good Morning Football, he called him a media
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: type now, so he made fun of us, as he
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: always does. Make fun of the media types and now
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: he made fun of his brother for being one of
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: us or becoming one of us. But he mostly talked
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: about the grind of camp, and he had made a
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: joke that nobody's actually happy to be back in training camp,
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: which I think he does every single season, or says
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: every single year, So I wouldn't read too much into that.
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: But he also mentioned that a new Jersey legend joining
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: him in the safety group with Jabriel Peppers. Excited to
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: have Peppers aboard and with him and Kyle Dugger and
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: Adrian Phillips. He actually hearkened it back to when they
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: had dron Harmon here and Tavon Wilson and Nate Ebner
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: and mentioned that it's always been a hallmark of the
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: Patriots secondary to have three or four safeties that can
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: all play at Yeah, no, we're gonna see four. I mean,
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: that's what Evan and I we're just already starting to
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: dip into the football conversations, and you know, as Ernie
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: and Bill have had their football we started our own, um.
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: But that was something we were talking about of you know,
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: really you had the three safeties coming back, and we said,
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: you bring Peppers in talked about you know, are they
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: just going to run up four man line with with
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: with seven dbs and back of them? Um? You know,
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: I mean obviously Evan is has has great analysis and
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: you know, I'm excited to to you know, welcome that in.
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: And I think we're at a time now where they
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: got to do some stuff on defense to counter these
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: RPOs from Miami and everything that Josh Allen is um,
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: you know, as well as all the much talked about
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: you know, kind of scheme evolution. So again I think
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: it's a good I'm going to tee it up for
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: Evan just you know, what are your what are your
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: thoughts here of both those sides of the balls of
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: you know, we talked about we saw a lot of
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: wide zone and the and in mini camp and you know,
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: is that you know connected to the Shanahan offense and
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: is that the direction they're going? We don't know, but um,
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: you know what, what are kind of your feelings on
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: where the offensive defense? We'll get to people's calls and
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: emails in a minute, but like you know, everybody knows
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: like our take one going into the season, what's your take? Yeah, well,
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: I think to go off of a Mike was saying
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: the seven dB strategy or having four safeties on the
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: field at once. With Peppers now in the mix, it
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: reminds me of that twenty eighteen Chargers defense who shut
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: down Lamar Jackson in the wildcard round that came here
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: and lost the Patriots in the divisional round, and they
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: were one of the first teams to start playing seven
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: dbs or you know, kind of a dollar package with
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: those defensive backs playing essentially as linebackers and against a
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: team that was very option heavy or RPO heavy with
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: Lamar in his rookie season. Granted it, he was only
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: a rookie and it was a different animal now maybe
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: facing a guy like Lamar, but at the time it
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: really slowed him down and kind of won the game
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: for the Chargers. So I look at Miami, I look
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: at what the Bills are doing with Josh Allen, and
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: think maybe that could be the approach here against some
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: of those teams, especially with the Dolphins now with Hill
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: and Waddle and all the speed that they can put
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: on the field, You're not going to want to put
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: two hundred and fifty pound linebackers when Tyr Hill is
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: crossing one way and Jalen Waddles coming from the other
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: direction and they're not going to be able to keep up,
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: So maybe they do go with a more seven dB
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: package at times. I love the idea of going four
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: man lines and allowing Judeon and bar Moore to just
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: kind of tee off at times and come after the
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: quarterback in those situations too. And I still think in
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: terms of big picture, with the entire team going into
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: the season, this all rides on mac shoulders, and I
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: hate to put it all on the quarterback, but what
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: it is, it's a quarterback league. Yeah, if he can
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: take that next step that even his head coach is
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: now talking about that he appears to be taking, then,
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: as we have known for number twelve or twenty plus years,
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: it makes everything easier on everybody else when the quarterback
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: is playing at an MVP level. So ultimately they're going
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: to go as far as Mac Jones can take them.
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: So let me ask you a question, because we were
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: talking about it just before you got here. We're talking
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: about the end of last season. In your opinion, what
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: happened to this defense at the end of the last season.
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: Why is Bill belichick defense unable? For example, to have
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: buffalo punt in two games. Yeah. I think the biggest
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: thing that Matthew Judon alluded to, I think it was
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: during Super Bowl Week when he was on the radio
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: and doing kind of the gamut there at Super Bowl
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: Week was guys trying to take over games. And I
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: think him in particular, he was racking up so many
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: sacks in the first eleven twelve games of the season,
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: twelve and a half sacks in the first twelve games
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: as a Patriot, and he's thinking, oh, I'm gonna get
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: twenty this year, right, I'm really getting after it. I
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: think after a point in time there, it started to,
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: you know, the mant around here, do your job right,
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: and instead of doing your job, it was individual guys
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: trying to just take over the game on their own merit,
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: and we know that that doesn't necessarily work. When I
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: look at the defense, I think of those types of things.
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: And not to bash him on his way out by
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: any means, but J C. Jackson I think might be
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: in that category to playing for that contract. Judeon, he
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: thinks that he can just tee off after the quarterback
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: all the time, and but see, okay, that could be
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: the case. But after a couple of games where coaches
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: see that, why aren't the coaches reeling these guys back?
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: You know, why do you let it go on for
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: you know, seven more games or whatever it was. You know, Yeah,
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: it's a fair point. And I think when you talk
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: to most of the players, I think they're also especially
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: John the stretch last year, at the end of last year,
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: we talked to them, like after the Buffalo game, for example,
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: in the playoffs, they were searching for the answer, right, like,
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: how did we get to this point? How did we
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: let it get here? You come off that win in Buffalo,
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: in the windstorm, in Orchard Park, you beat the Bills
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: on their home turf, and at that point in time,
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: you're the number one seed in the AFC, you're the
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: number one seed in the division. You think everything is
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: lining up perfectly for you. And then and then the
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: you know, the ground fell out from underneath them from there.
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: So I don't know the answer of why they weren't
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: able to reel it back in. That's why I hired you. Yeah,
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: I mean, you don't know, ye And I hate to
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: just no, I think that, but it's true. I mean,
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: and that's what we've been talking about and then you
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: have like that outlier against Jacksonville that you know, maybe
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: they were all just kind of like whatever, we'll probably
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: beat him, and everybody wasn't trying to do too much.
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: And then I mean, there were probably so much more
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: talent than Jacksonville didn't even matter anyway. But I think
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: that's one of the great questions. And I mean it
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: goes back to Bill's quote right after that game of
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: is this a bad night or is this what we are?
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: And we'll find out when we start playing again. So well,
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: you know, again we have a saying around here, Evan,
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: don't when it comes to Bill Belichick, don't listen to
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: what he says. Look at what he does. And what
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: he did to me in the offseason was he let
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: Jamie Collins go, Dante Hike Towers that we signed, he
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: let let Venny go. And I don't think he was
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: happy with that linebacker play. And I don't think those
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: guys were going to get him where he wanted to
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: be this year. And I think it comes down on
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: defense to our some of these young guys going to
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: be able to be better than they were, you know,
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: the group last year, and I'm including mac Wilson in
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: that and ray Kwon McMillan, you know who we didn't
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: see last year? Is this linebacking corps going to be
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: better than it was last year? Because to me, that's
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: where the big change is, other than losing J. C.
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: Jackson obviously. Yeah, I mean it's um, you know, it's sorry.
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: I just got totally distracted by that tweet and I
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: had something cute up to say. Sorry. Someone else called, yeah,
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: I remember, I remember. Um. You know Tevin's point and
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: to your point, Fred, with the linebackers, he's just I
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: wonder how hungry these guys were, and not just the
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: guys that have left. But I think it's understandable the
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: psychology of players who have played for championships and have
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: always been in the mix, and you know, to suddenly,
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: not that they were out of the mix, but suddenly
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: they're not the big dogs anymore. They're not the favorites.
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: And you know, can you get that by turning things
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: over to some younger guys. And while you might lose
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: some of the experience some of the knowledge with a
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: guy like Ouch or Jennings or some like or Perk,
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: and those guys haven't won super Bowls and they know
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: right now that this is the opportunity. Are they going
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: to come out and play like hungry dogs, you know,
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: or are they going to come out which I didn't
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: have a problem last year with you know, the savvy
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: of high Tower and van Noy returning after you know,
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: a year when when they were just kind of like
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: Bentley and terres Hall out there, I mean, the random
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: you know guys that were out there. I wonder that too,
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: And then I wonder, you know, if some of these veterans,
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: I mean, clearly d mac is back, but you know, Lawrence, guy,
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: Dietrich Wise, these guys can they can they refine that
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: level of Hey we're not we're not the top dogs.
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: We have to be the scrappy get every inch that
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: we possibly can and play with that kind of style. Yeah. Yeah, Ultimately,
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: I think it ties back to what we were talking
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: about with the seven dbs and the four safety package
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: and things like that. The Patriots defense is not fast enough, right,
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: I mean, they're just simply not fast enough. And you
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: look at what Buffalo puts on the field, You look
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: at their way they run their offense, with their spread offense.
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: Now you look down in Miami and just in the
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: division you can see it happening around you, but you
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: can also see it and outside the division in Kansas
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: City or in the Chargers or wherever you want to go.
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: And the Patriots defense last year with those linebackers, the
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: savvy was great. The veteran presence is great. Dante high Tower,
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: we're gonna have them, you know here in five years
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: with the red jacket on and everything, and an all
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: time great Patriot. But they simply weren't fast enough at
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: the second level. And you start to look at some
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: of the things that they can do. Even if a
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: guy like Cameron mcgrown eventually comes along and emerges here
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: down the stretch at some point, the speed that they
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: can put on the field now, I think is what
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: they're hoping is going to allow them to be a
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: little bit better at defending some of these teams. And
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: I look at a guy like Alan and what the
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: Bills do. They have really adopted a spread style in
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: Buffalo with their offense, their three wide, their shotgun all
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: the time. They don't really have an under center run
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: package or play action package that they use or major in.
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: Now you start to get into some of the things
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: that they do with their spread. It puts a lot
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: of a lot of stress on the second level. And
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: I listened to Mike Lombardi all the time talk about
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: the mic linebacker position, and that's really the guy that
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: sets the speed or sets the tone in terms of
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: your pace of your defense. And in the past, the
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: Patriots have had two hundred and fifty five two hundred
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: and sixty pound mic linebackers like a high Tower or Bentley,
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: and at some point in time they have to evolve
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: with what they're seeing. And we always know that Belichick
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: tends to have a great eye for these sort of things,
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: and hopefully now is the time when he's finally going
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: to take that next step and realize we got to
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: do something different here because the league is going one
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: direction that is not the plotting two gapping. Let's fill
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: the whole linebacker. Yeah, you mentioned, you know, you talked
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: about Mac and what Bill had said and what the
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: players are saying about him. Does he have enough weapons
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: on this offense? Well, I think for him, the emphasis
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: is going to be on spreading the football around. And
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: we've heard Brady say that for years as well, that
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: the guy I'm thrown to is the open man, right,
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: And I think that is really going to be an
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: emphasis this year for Mac. I think last year at
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: times they are having him be a little bit too
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: conservative just to protect the football. It's when you know
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: the turnover battle, let's not throw interceptions. This year, I
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: would like to see him be a little bit more
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: trigger happy sometimes and throw the football down the field
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: with a little bit more aggressiveness and then hopefully their
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: depth takes over. That's what they're going to have to
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: count on. They don't have a Davante Adams, they don't
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: have a Tiree Hill, but they have a receiving group
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: that can go five or six deep. They have two
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: tight ends that can catch the football and do some things.
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: They have guys out of the backfield that can do
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: some things. So you look at the depth and just
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: the sheer numbers that they can throw at teams, hopefully
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: they'll have an ability to just spread the football around
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: and what do you take away? Right? You take I agree,
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: I think they've got enough good depth. I mean, they
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: don't have any superstar, but I think they have enough
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: good depth to keep defenses on their heels as long
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: as the playbook has opened up and Mac, like you said,
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: isn't nitive, you know, gets rid of the ball on time.
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: I'm I people know on this show, I'm bullish on
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: this offense. Yeah, me too. I really think it's going
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: to be a better than people think offense. I wonder
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: almost if his interception totals spike a little bit, like
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: go up a little bit. If it's okay because he's
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: taken the chance. Okay, they'll get a couple of touchdowns. Yeah,
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: but we might get you know, a couple of bombs
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: to to. I don't know Taekwon Thord and maybe that's
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: that's a good one too. Have we've talked about a
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: little bit of you know, expectations for Tae Kwon Thorne
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: as a second round receiver who clearly is fast. Um,
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: but as you said, and you know, we've said, there's
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: so much depth there and it's not like, oh, here's
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: the depth, but there's you know, legitimate NFL players above him,
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: and you know, do you I've been asking myself, am
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: I selling him short? Like? Am I not even really
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: giving him a chance? Am I just assuming that he's
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: a year one rookie role player who three four plays
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: a game. He's gonna go out, They're gonna take a
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: shot to him. You know, it's it's Bethel Johnson, it's
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: Matthew Slater when they didn't have any exactis right? If
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: he's even act you know? So is that selling him shorts?
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: You think? I mean, I mean that's why I just
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: don't want to lower him expectations because in any other year,
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: I think a second round wide receiver who was the
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: fastest guy in the draft, you'd have some expectations, and
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: I feel like I don't really have any expectations for him,
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: at least this year. Yeah, they have the ability this
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: year with Taekwon to put as much speed on the
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: field offensively as they've had in recent seasons. Because Aglare
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: runs a low four four Tae Kwon's four to eight.
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: I mean, those two guys alone are a lot faster
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: than some of the other players that they've had over
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: the last couple of years. And we also know that
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: Kendrick Boring, even though he did it time great when
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: he came out, he plays a lot faster than maybe
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: what the forty time would suggest. So for me, I'm
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: not ready to say that Tae Kwon Thornton's gonna have
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: eight hundred yards and as a rookie or anything crazy
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: like that. But just his speed alone, I think can
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: impact a defense where it's worth it to have him
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: out there, even at a small percentage of the time,
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: because when you start talking about not only vertically stretching
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: the field, but maybe his ability to horizon. He stretched
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: the field at times, whether it's setting him in motion
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: before the snap. Yeah, just any sort of crossing pattern
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: after the snap that he can run. And then obviously
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: the verticals we saw it in mini camp. He just
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: sometimes he just runs by people. And when's the last
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: time that the Patriots had a receiver, probably Brandon Cooks,
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: that you could sit here and say, oh, he just
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: ran by the guy, Like it's you know, I get
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: into the minutia, the xs and os, and sometimes it's
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: like he's just the other guy and we ride up
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: across from him. And I think that for the first
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: time since probably Cooks. Not to put too much expectations
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: on him, but I think they have somebody that can
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: at least run by people. Let's see about the other
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: details of the game, but from that point of view, yeah,
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: do you think it's like as a coach when you've
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: got a player like that, like you have to kind
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: of plan to like put it in defense's minds that
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: he can run by people. So you know, get it
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: on film, like all right in the preseason or whatever,
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: we're gonna run a go with him, and you gotta
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: hit it. And then that way everyone's talking about it.
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: And then you know, because if you just kind of
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: bust him out, he doesn't really work because a decoy,
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: he works only if you hit the path play. So
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: I don't know just strategically, how do they how do
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: they roll them out? And and and I think I think,
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: I think whether it's him or Agal or it's just
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: the threat of the long pass, ye whoever it is,
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: you know, like they could go down field. We have
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: to defend that, you know, And I go back. You know,
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: one of my pet peeves is, you know, I forget
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: which player might have been somebody from the both the
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: Patriots are easy to defend. Yeah, I'd never heard that
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: before in twenty eight years. So we got to get
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: that out of you know, the lexicon. Do you have
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: any sleeper picks for camp guys? I like, in camps,
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: somebody somebody no one's expecting to emerge and he's going
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: to sneak up on people. Well, we were talking about
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: earlier Mike sam Roberts, who's another rookie, but him and
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: Lebrian Ray, the DFA from Alabama that they signed. Just
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: another big body on the defensive line that can hold
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: up at the point of attack. I think would pay
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: real big dividends for this defense they got. Times last
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: year they had struggles resetting the line of scrimmage, holding
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: the line of scrimmage up front, and maybe they get
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: a little bit more aggressive and allow guys to start
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: teeing off and shoot gaps and things like that and
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: more of like a single gap system. But if they're
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: going to stick with this two gap, if they're going
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: to try to hold and build that wall, so to speak,
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: and they're going to need another guy that can do
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: that and be steady on the inside. So I'm looking
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: at some of these younger defensive line and see if
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: they can hold up once we get into pads and
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: see how those things go. Other than that, I would,
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: you know mention. I know it's not necessarily a sleeper,
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: but a guy like Trey Nixon I think really is
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: going to continue to build upon the spring because you
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: try not to get too caught up in the nonpadded
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: practices and in mini camps and these passing camps that
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: are essentially no contact, no pass rush at times. But
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: you look at the way that he can run routes
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: from the slot and his ability to actually stretch the
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: field from the slot on slot fades or the big
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: route that he was running in mini camps, the corner
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: ball from Mac Jones and those types of routes Mac
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: lived on at Alabama. You know, you put a condensed split,
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: or put Davonte Smith in the slot or Jalen Waddle
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: in the slot, and you just have him get vertical.
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: And Mac has a really nice touch, deep throw that
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: he can just drop it in the bucket along the
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: sideline to guys. I think that that throw is definitely
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: more in max repertoire. And last year we saw a
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: couple hunter Henry Jacoby Myers. I think they used a
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: little bit on those phades, and it's just those twenty
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: to twenty five yards shot plays down the field from
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: the in tight formations that allow him to kind of
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: just lay it out there for guys. Whereas when you're
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: trying to throw a go ball along the sideline and
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: he's going from the other hash like that might be
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: the throw that's a little bit tougher for him to
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: throw forty fifty yards down the field, but you drop
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: it in the bucket. Whether it was a wheel route
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: to a running back, whether it was one of those
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: phades from inside. Mac has a really pretty ball there.
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: So I think that a guy like Trey Nixon can
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: maybe add that element as well. So, you know a
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: lot of media people saying Patriots are going to completely
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: revamped their offense. It's going to be a completely different revamp,
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: you know, offense this year. I'll believe it when I
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: see it. I mean, there's gonna be new elements, I'm sure,
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: But like I'd be shocked if, like all of a sudden,
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: Mac is running RPOs and you know, we've we see
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: a completely different offense that we've seen. You know what,
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: do you think I would love to see Mac run RPOs?
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: This is one thing that I've been harping on since
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: they drafted him at Alabama. Eleven point nine yards per
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: attempt on RPOs, eleven touchdowns to zero interceptions. Him and
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: DeVante Smith, especially who obviously won the Heisman Trophy probably
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: catching forty balls off of RPOs slants just absolutely tore
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: it up on those types of concepts with Mac, He's
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: a great decision maker. He throws a good anticipation accuracy
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: to lead guys into yak and lead guys into opportunities
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: to run with the football. So those types of packages
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: I think are something that they need to So you
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: think they might, I think they will. I don't think
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: that it's ever going to be something they're going to
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: lead the league in necessarily. And last year they were
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: the last they were lowest him on in the league. Yeah, like,
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: I don't even they've ran any like a couple but yeah,
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, there was a couple of players that
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: had sort of like what would you call package plays
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: where it's it's attached to it, but it's really not
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: the goal of the play. It's it's only if Mac
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: pre snap gets the exact look that they're looking for,
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: which they ran with Brady at times too. But I
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: talked to Josh McDaniels about it last year. I asked him,
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: I said, you know, what about RPOs, Like, do you
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: guys think about that? Do you guys think about installing that?
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: And he said, it's not something that we major in,
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: and I you know, now that he's not here, I'm like,
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: maybe you know, you do it a little bit more often.
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: And with Joe Judge's experience with with Daniel Jones, I
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: mean they you know, they did a little bit too.
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: I think it's a it's a it's a key way.
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: And you know, if Paul was here, I can hear
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: what he would be saying about the RPOs. But I
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: really think that the RPOs lean into if you have
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: receivers that maybe aren't the fastest or most dynamic, that
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: it helps that it helps guys get open quicker because
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: they're going to be right no matter what happens. So
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: I look at it as a way, like Evan said,
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: I agree, I'd love to see that be an element.
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: I just think the bigger question right now is that
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: d shanahan offense is all build off the wide zone
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: run and everything comes off of that. We saw a
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: ton of it in OTAs. Is that what's coming as
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: like the base, they're going to be kind of like
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: the Broncos used to be, where it's wide zoe wide zone,
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: you know, bootleg out off of it. Those kind of
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: things that everything that McDaniel did with Debo as well.
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: I don't know if they go that far, but I
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: think the RPOs it just makes sense. As Evan laid
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: out with Mac. I think it's what he does well.
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: I think. So tell me what makes a good RPO quarterback?
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: Decision making I think is the biggest thing, and that ability,
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: I mean too is one of the best in the
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: league added and his ability to make those quick, split
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: second decisions and get the football out where the disinvantage
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: is for the defense. I think the number one buzzword
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: that I always hear is conflict. Right, you always want
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: to be putting the defense in conflict making. Guys make
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: decisions where there's no right answer, whether that it's a
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: post route by a receiver and it's you know, post crosser,
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: and it's like do I take the post or do
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: I take the crossing route? Like which one do I defend?
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: If I'm the deep safety. Devin mccordy talks about it
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: all the time. He gets put into conflict at that
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: post safety role constantly, and he's always making decisions about
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: what's the biggest threat, and conflict is what you want
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: to put defenses into attack. Their rules know their responsibilities
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: and kind of reverse engineer it to go after them.
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: And that's what the RPO accomplishes in a really simple way.
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: For the offense, it's it's a run play for the back,
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: it's a run play for the line, it's a pass
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: play for the receivers in the quarterback, and everybody can
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: understand their assignments pretty easily. But the defense is never
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: right if you run it correctly. They're literally never correct.
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: And that's the big thing about it. You know, where
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: did RPOs emerge? Like what was kind of like we've
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: heard about, you know, West Coast offense, we've heard about
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: you know, run option obviously Oklahoma nebrassmen running that for decades,
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: but RPO, Like, where did that come from? Yeah? The
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: college game. Most of the college coaches that start everything
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: that for the most part, those types of innovations always
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: trickle up, right. It sometimes always starts all the way
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: in high school. The college game, though, I would say
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: the guy that really brought it to a big time
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: program was Lincoln Riley at Oklahoma. He was sort of
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: the first one to bring it to the Power five
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: right and say this is actually something that we're gonna
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: major in and do regularly, and then you started to
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: get into it, you know, Joe Brady and the LSU
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: and that year with Joe Burrow it became big there.
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: And now Alabama even runs it with all their quarterbacks
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: with Mac obviously in two AH and now as well.
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: So you look at some of all of the things
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: that Alabama are doing too, and you're mentioning the wide
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: zone stuff, the Shanahan tree, they have some elements of
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: that in it. But I think the two biggest things
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: that Alabama does that I would love to see the
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: Patriots adopt and Mac is obviously extremely familiar with it,
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: is one the RPOs and two pre snap motions. So
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: the Patriots are a big pre snap shift team. They'll
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: move a guy over here and move a guy over
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: there and allow that to either dictate the defense or
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: give the quarterback and receivers kind of a tell, right, Okay,
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: if somebody motions it's man zone whatever. But pre snap
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: motion is jet motion and arounds things where the receivers
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: are the guy coming in motion is moving while the
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: ball is being snapped, and those types of things really
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: stress and statistically it shows that the teams that do
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: it the most are very very good offensively when they
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: do it. Teams like the forty nine ers are at
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: the top of that list as well. So you look
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: at pre snap motion and you start to put defenses
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: again into that conflict of well, now we got to
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: shift over here, and whose responsibility is the motion and
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: is it just window dressing or are they actually going
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: to throw the ball or hand the ball off to
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: that guy? And it starts to just present a lot
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: more problems for the defense. You know, for me, like
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: the RPO, the difference there is instead of giving the
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: quarterback the freedom of deciding pre snap pass or run,
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: they're giving the quarterback the freedom post snap pass or run.
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: You know, now where I mean, I guess are there
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: is it a simplified read to just one guy? So
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: I mean, are you going to have to go through
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: any kind of progression or is it pass to one
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: guy or handoff or sophisticated? Yeah, most of the sophisticated
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: RPOs are basically reading two guys. You're reading the backside
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: defensive end. If he stays put and holds his ground,
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: and you're usually going to hand the football off. If
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: he crashes down, then you're going to use some sort
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: of pass, or if you're adding a run element for
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: the quarterback, which the Patriots probably won't be obviously, then
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: you have the quarterback keep it and the edges not
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: being set. The other option that you have is reading
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: the second level and read the linebacker. So it's essentially
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: the same as a play action pass at that point,
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: but it just has the real built in option to
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: actually hand the football off to the running back. So
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: you start to think about those RPOs are what their
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: Patriots are going to run. They're not going to run
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: the RPOs with the read option element like what Baltimore
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: does with Lamar right, they're gonna run or you know
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: Arizona with Kyler. They're going to run the RPOs where
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: Mac is usually going to read either the strong side
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: or the weak side linebacker at the second level. If
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: that linebacker steps into his gap, then you're passing it
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: right by his ear. If that linebacker stays back in
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: the passing lane, then Damian Harrison Romandre Stevenson are coming
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: down your throat. And that's sort of the idea of
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: the conflict. Ethan and Vermont writes in Fred just want
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: to say what a great hire Evan is. Who would
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: have thought you'd replace Eric with someone who actually loved
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: and can talk football. Great stuff so far, looking forward
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: to the camp broadcast, assuming Evan will be on air
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: with you at times. You know, right now we're trying
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: to get Eric Evan. You got confused getting a similated
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: with the place. You know, his main duty is the beat,
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: you know. Um, but he will be film film out
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: analysis too, obviously that's what he does. Great. I've got
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: to make sure to play into his so I don't
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: want to overwhelm him by giving him everything on day one.
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: But you'll hear from him, whether it's on this show
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: or in addition to this show, his own. We'll figure
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: that out. Yeah, it's all day two. Yeah, yeah, Day two.
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: Let's get to some phone calls. Um, see what people
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: are thinking. We'll go to Robin and Birmingham. What's up Robin? Hey, everybody? Y,
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: I am a first time caller, but long time listener. Okay,
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: and um well, I just wanted to call in because
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: I m am on maternity leave, actually have a baby
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: on the day of the draft, and so I have
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: not been able to listen to any of the podcasts. Um.
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: I know Eric left because I thought on Facebook. Um,
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: I was just wondering if y'all could just give me
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: a I don't like, a quick recap of the summer
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: or maybe like any players drafted you'll were excited about. No, well,
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: let's cut. I mean, you know, you know, we'll do
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: a special show for you, Robin. But but you know,
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: I think we're all excited about you know, um, well,
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: I don't know excited is the word. But we're confident
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: in Cole Strange, like he's gonna come in and he's
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: gonna be fine. Yeah, you know, I would just say generally,
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: I mean, there's not a whole lot to really tie
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: your wagon to in terms of free agency in the draft,
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: I think it's I'm excited Parker certainly little pieces, but
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: I think the main core of this team is about
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: the year two of Mac and year two of all
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: those free agency signed two years ago, and what strides
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: do they take and that you know, and of course
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: you're gonna need Davante Parker and Cole Strange to contribute.
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: But I think really how this team does is going
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: to be about last year's free agency class and the
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: last few drafts of guys that have gotten an opportunity
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: and of course that the headline is is MAC and bbin.
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: Do you use um bar soap or do you use um?
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: The words out of my mid Yeah, when you don't
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: have to listen to seven shows about soap on a rope.
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: What kind of soap do you use in the shower?
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: Liquid or bar lufa liquid? Okay, all right, all right,
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: thank you, congratulations on your baby. How about you evan
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: liquid soap or bar soap? Bar soap bar soap? What
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: do you do with the wafer when you get down
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: to the end. I use it all the way through,
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: I know, but how yeah, what do you mean? How
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: is there a way to use it properly? Well, you
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: get to that moment of the little sliver and you're
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: rubbing it on your arm or other body part, and
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: all of a sudden it just evaporates and you're like,
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: I did it. I use the whole bar of soap. Yeah,
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: that's it's really satisfying. You never thought like, wow, instead
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: of using this little crummy piece of soap, I might
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: have another new bar of soap with I don't know,
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: to slide that in and you put it on top
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: of you like press it together, like these bars are
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: soap you don't even know the rabbit hole you're going
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: down right now. These bar get it too that later
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: next off season Williams and Philham William hung up. William
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: hung up. That's that's too bad. Let's get to some
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: of these emails that are coming in. Johnson is in
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: Porter's Lake Nova, Scotia. He says, I'm not sure if
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: this has been discussed lately, but the coaching titles announced
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: last week. I've seen many YouTube experts and he's got
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: those that in quotes claiming the Patriots are in trouble
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: without the fine roles. Do you think that the no
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: OCDC thing is for real or is this some contractual
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: solid our organization is doing to help Patricia paid by
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: the lines through twenty twenty two and Judge making five
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: million a year through twenty twenty five. I don't really
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: understand it for the defensive side, but looking for any insight,
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: I mean, Brian Floraz didn't have a title. I mean,
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: it has happened. It has happened, and they have had
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: years without titles, but I do think it's significant. I'm
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: getting sick of it though, because I think ultimately a
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: boy down to Bill and Mac and you know, I think,
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: you know, play calling is an art to it. You
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: want somebody who's experienced. How's it going to play out?
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: We'll find out, But I still just them, Like I
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: think Tommy Kerran tweeted out today that was just like
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: all right, I think I'm over this because every time
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: we're asking about it, we'll find out. We'll see in
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: the next we'll find out. But could it be the
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: contract situation where as soon as you make them, you
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: give them the title, then something kicks in with Detroit
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: And there's a lot of specul giant of that that
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: this is a way that they're saving money and saving
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: them from having to meet with the with the with
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: the media. Although I thought Matt Patricia was awesome when
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: he talked to us over Mini Camp, I mean, just
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: you know, really really forthcoming, and you know, hopefully that continues.
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: I mean, I'd love to continue to be able, especially
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: if he's heavily involved in the offense. I don't think
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: anybody knows right now, but I think, I mean, I
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: think Joe Judge is going to be beside on Max
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: side his sounding board, but I think it very well
- 1:41:50Speaker 1: could be Patricia as the one who's calling the plays
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: and you know, let Billy Yates worry about the offensive
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: line on game days. I don't think that that's what
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: do you think, Evan? What's I mean? Are you as
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: concerned summon the media as the offensive coaching situation? Well,
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: I'm assuming the YouTube expert was a shot at me
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: for my former employers, think so, yeah, maybe that was me.
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: I think the biggest thing is what Mike was just
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: saying is to me that process that you just outlined,
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: Joe Judge working with Mac shoulder to shoulder in the
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: weeds with him every single day out of practice in
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: the film room and install all that type of stuff.
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: And then they get to Sunday and here comes Matt
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: Patricia calling plays that it spells. It's like a game
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: of telephone, right, like the Lost in Translation. I think
- 1:42:37Speaker 1: can happen really easily when it's one guy in your
- 1:42:41Speaker 1: ear for five days and then the sixth day you
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: come to Sundays and it's Matt Patricia calling the plays. Now,
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: the one theory that I've heard floated that I do
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: think might end up being what it is is that
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: Belichick might actually be the one that is hand picking. Okay,
- 1:42:57Speaker 1: we're going to run here, we're gonna pass here, and
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: then they're gonna have, as they do every week in
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: the game plan, you know, fifteen pass plays that they
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: like against this defense. And then maybe it will be
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: up to Matt Patricia or Joe Judge to pick the
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: exact play that they're going to run. So maybe the
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: Bill could probably do it without a play sheet, right, right,
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: So you wouldn't even know if he's doing that, right.
- 1:43:17Speaker 1: So Scott's Ole said this on the radio a few
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: weeks ago about how that's how it worked with under
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: Bill Parcels for a while when they were still working
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: out who was going to be the OC for the
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: Patriots back then when Zoe was on the team and
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: he said that, Parcels would say, let's go run, run
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: pass here, let's go pass, run, let's go you know
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: up right, we're all in two minute. Let's let's pass
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: the football, you know, all the way down the fields here,
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: and then it would be up to the assistant to
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: then hand pick which exact plays out of the hat
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: that they're going to pull to run. But to me
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: that if you're going to rpl then you throw that
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: out the window. Right. The biggest thing is run pass. Yeah,
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: you just want to make sure that the messaging is
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: sustinct to him and that he's the one that's comfortable
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: with what they're actually calling. On Sundays, the last thing
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: that you want is them to call a play and
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: then Mac to get back to the side and then
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: be like, I don't like that play? Why are we
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: running that play? The quarterback should like every play that
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: you run, and that's going to think be the hardest
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: challenge if it is Matt Patricia, Yeah, I agree. I
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: think you got to have the same voice throughout the week.
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: You can't switch it up. Now if it's Patricia, right,
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: does he do it from the sideline or does he
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: do what some OC's do and do it from upstairs?
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: I don't know, Yeah, quite Frankly, I don't understand how
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: OC's do it from the sideline. Yeah, it really does.
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: Like it doesn't compete with me, because if you can't
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: see the twenty two players on the field and how
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: the defensive structure is lining up and things like that,
- 1:44:49Speaker 1: it's remarkable that so many good ocs do it from
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: the sideline. And you even talk about play callers that
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: are head coaches like Kyle Shanahan, or Sean McVay. They're
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: obviously on the sidline, and I get the the personal
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: in your face that you can get with the quarterback,
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: and you can sit down on the bench as we
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: saw it for years with McDaniels sitting next to Brady,
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: sitting next to mac cam going over you know, stills
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: and things like that. So I get that element of it.
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: But in terms of actually understanding what's going on schematically,
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: I don't know how they do it by just standing there,
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: but I'm sure there's advantages to both. Did you ever
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: ask Josh about that? I have, I never did, but
- 1:45:26Speaker 1: maybe we have that opportunity, hopefully to talk to Patricia
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: or a judge who end up getting the responsibility down
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: the road, and we can ask that question. Yeah, I
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: mean on the sideline, maybe you know, you get more
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: of a feel, You hear what people are saying. You know,
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: you can you know, I'm I'm beating this guy or
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: you know whatever. I'm sure. I'm sure, like you said,
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: you know, different guys do it different ways, and there's
- 1:45:47Speaker 1: advantages to both. But you would think looking down and
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: being able to see, yeah, it's a field. It's just
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: a weird experience. I think like calling a game and
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: the energy on the sidelines and you know, just everything
- 1:45:59Speaker 1: that goes on there, and then to be kind of
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: in a you know, clean environment up in a press
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: box where it can be quiet. I mean, it's even
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: weird for me in the press box when it's like
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: people are you know, you're watching a football game. You
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: don't even realize there's seventy thousand people right in front
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: of um. Then I was just interesting when you decide
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: to make that transition of because I think most you know,
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: people coming up you high school football, everybody's you know,
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: mostly on the sidelines. So yeah, I don't know it'll
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: be I mean, but I think it'll be interesting because
- 1:46:23Speaker 1: you'll get a good sense of, you know, his mappetrishi
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: on the sideline because that's where the offensive line coach
- 1:46:27Speaker 1: always was talking in the offensive line. You can't but
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: last year he was the advisor, so that was up top,
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: That's for sure. You can't coach the old line from
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: up top, right, So if you're gonna do both, you
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: gotta be down on the field unless you hand over
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: to your assistant, you know, Billy Yates, uh, you know,
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: on game day. So I don't know but that's I mean,
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: that's what we all eyes on. Whoever puts a headset on, well,
- 1:46:48Speaker 1: they're all gonna have headsets on, I'm telling you right now.
- 1:46:50Speaker 1: Like yeah, like even the dude's just running around getting
- 1:46:54Speaker 1: water and like running cones around, Da've got heads Yeah,
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: it's like you know which which Limo is the President?
- 1:47:00Speaker 1: Not gonna know right? Uh? Nates in Chicago? What's up? Nate? Hey, guys,
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: how we doing good? Good? You know, as a Patriots
- 1:47:09Speaker 1: fan that lives in Chicago. Right when I thought I
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: got rid of nikkil Harry unbelievable, I had a couple
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: of questions about a couple of free agents and just
- 1:47:19Speaker 1: thought I'd ask your guys thoughts, one being a getting
- 1:47:22Speaker 1: some depths on the defensive line. What if you guys
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: had any thoughts and Carl Massif, I know he's not
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: gonna be a player that's gonna you know, you know,
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: ruin any games. It's not you know, really gonna destroy
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: any offensive lines, but just to add depth and have
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: another piece as a rotational player. Another another question I
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: had was about an undrafted player out of stone Hill,
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: Massachusetts who's playing in the Fan Run League, Andrew Jamil
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: as like a quick footed Splott receiver. And I just
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: wondering if you guys had any spots on those two players,
- 1:47:51Speaker 1: and if you think there might be a spot for them.
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: Are they still doing that fan run league that that
- 1:47:56Speaker 1: they the fans call the plays right or control of football? Yeah? Yeah,
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: I think I report from Mike Greece today saying that
- 1:48:03Speaker 1: they tried him out right. Yeah. I used to really
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: like Anthony Sherman. Wow, good for him. I don't know
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: what was the first guy they asked about Massive Yeah,
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean he's been around
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: a while. Yes, I've always thought he was kind of
- 1:48:19Speaker 1: kind of in their prototype size of you know, outside
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: linebacker edge kind of a guy um. And I think
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: that they're light at that position. So I mean I
- 1:48:27Speaker 1: I kind of like, hey, Trey Flowers would make sense,
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: But I just I don't think they got a lot
- 1:48:30Speaker 1: of Speaking of free agents, Sean writes in from Vancouver,
- 1:48:34Speaker 1: what do you think the chances are that the Patriots
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: would bring back the following players Trey Flowers, Nate Solder,
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: or Danny Shelton. Danny Shelton signed somewhere this week, did
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: they yes with Carolinas who we up here too, Um,
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: I could Flowers? Yeah, I mean, I think Solder would
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: be like an injury, but I think that an injury
- 1:48:54Speaker 1: is certainly possible. But I think he's he's probably done.
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: They moved into the right side too, didn't they. Ye,
- 1:49:00Speaker 1: he's been one of slow tackles for I know everyone
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: loves every union, but I think Trey Flowers is the
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: guy just in terms of, you know, getting one more
- 1:49:09Speaker 1: veteran edge guy who you know probably still has some
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: some football on him. Uh. Tayshaun writes in I'd like
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: to play a game of would you rather we like
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: games on this show? Um? These are purposely over dramatic.
- 1:49:21Speaker 1: He says, would you rather see nikkil Harry lead the
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: league in receiving or the Patriots go oh and seventeen? Yeah?
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: Come on? Would you rather make it to the super
- 1:49:34Speaker 1: Bowl but Mac is a game manager through the process,
- 1:49:37Speaker 1: or miss the playoffs? But Mac has an amazing second
- 1:49:40Speaker 1: year jump and leads the league in QB stats the
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: Super Bowl? Yeah, make the super Bowl. If he's in
- 1:49:47Speaker 1: the Super Bowl, he's he's a pretty damn good game manager.
- 1:49:50Speaker 1: So I'll take that. And then Bill's just flexing on
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: everybody Yeah. Would you rather a high powered offense that
- 1:49:56Speaker 1: scores on every drive, but your defense lets up a
- 1:49:59Speaker 1: score every drive, or a high powered d that only
- 1:50:02Speaker 1: allows field goals but the offense is terrible. I'd probably
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: go the offense. I think, Yeah, that's just paint. If
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: the defense just went lights out and we could not
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: score to save our lives, there's nothing more infuriating. Yeah,
- 1:50:15Speaker 1: I mean, that's that's the state of the league, though.
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: I mean I just I feel like that's you're You're
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: not too far from the truth, Like you just you
- 1:50:20Speaker 1: need those offense. I don't know what defense is like
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: shutting down everybody anymore. Would you rather win the Super
- 1:50:26Speaker 1: Bowl this year but Bill retires, or keep Bill another
- 1:50:30Speaker 1: seven years but you never get deep in the playoffs.
- 1:50:32Speaker 1: I'll stop it. Super Bowl right now? Yeah? Yeah, Bill
- 1:50:36Speaker 1: on top and then you move on. Yeah. Sure. And
- 1:50:39Speaker 1: a silly one he says, would you rather lose both
- 1:50:42Speaker 1: arms but you're a billionaire, or keep both arms but
- 1:50:45Speaker 1: you go bankrupt and lose everything you can always rebuild, ye,
- 1:50:50Speaker 1: keeping the arms? Man some crazy stuff at Boston Dynamic
- 1:50:55Speaker 1: about to say, if I'm a billion yeah, give me
- 1:50:57Speaker 1: a couple of arms. Yeah. So I don't know that's
- 1:51:00Speaker 1: a good question. Maybe not as silly as he thought
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: it was to begin with. But the Super Bowls, let's
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: go to Todd, North Carolina. I hate Todd. Hey, I
- 1:51:11Speaker 1: was listening early on and I really liked your question
- 1:51:14Speaker 1: about who do you think he'll be surprised? And I
- 1:51:15Speaker 1: think it's gonna be our entire linebacking corps. I think
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: we've got some young talents in there that hasn't had
- 1:51:20Speaker 1: a real chance to see the field, and I think
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: that we might get some surprises there, you know, I
- 1:51:25Speaker 1: mean good surprises, not a bad one. Okay, I hope
- 1:51:28Speaker 1: you're right. If you're wrong, we're in trouble. I mean, well,
- 1:51:31Speaker 1: if I'm wrong, I'll buy you. I'll buy you guys lunch. There.
- 1:51:35Speaker 1: You go that that you know they have to be
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: better than they were last year, I mean, well, but yeah,
- 1:51:42Speaker 1: it's a whole new lineup. We don't even know what
- 1:51:43Speaker 1: we have. I mean, I mean the play from that,
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: you know that that core has to be better than
- 1:51:48Speaker 1: it was last year. Yeah, but I don't think it's
- 1:51:50Speaker 1: a whole new lineup. I mean, I think Judon and
- 1:51:52Speaker 1: Bentley are are significant pieces, you know, I mean it's
- 1:51:55Speaker 1: not every single guy is new, but I but I
- 1:51:57Speaker 1: think there's I think you do have a good point,
- 1:51:58Speaker 1: and I would just say of that next group of McMillan,
- 1:52:01Speaker 1: of Wilson, of Ouch, of Perkins, of like two of
- 1:52:05Speaker 1: those guys have to be able to play. And I
- 1:52:06Speaker 1: don't really care if josh Ucha is just a third
- 1:52:09Speaker 1: down pass rusher, but if he's able to pick up
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: seven eight sacks and give teams something else to think
- 1:52:14Speaker 1: about other than let's just get you down off the
- 1:52:16Speaker 1: back and make sure we got an eye on bar
- 1:52:17Speaker 1: More up the middle, like they need that complimentary piece.
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: I think the question is who plays on early downs,
- 1:52:22Speaker 1: who's going to stop the run? I don't and again
- 1:52:24Speaker 1: I'm trending away from like really passionately worrying about the
- 1:52:27Speaker 1: run defense. But I do think it's an issue of
- 1:52:29Speaker 1: who's going to step out there on an idiots. I mean,
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: if you play this dollar defense that you were talking about, Evan, Yeah, okay,
- 1:52:36Speaker 1: and you have a good running back, I'm gonna run
- 1:52:38Speaker 1: it down your throat until you stop it, right, you know.
- 1:52:40Speaker 1: But that's what the Patriots to the Chargers right first
- 1:52:43Speaker 1: drive of the game. They go fifteen plays Sony Michelle
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: right down your throat, James Devlin leading through the whole right,
- 1:52:48Speaker 1: was all she wrote. So forever reaction, there is an
- 1:52:51Speaker 1: equal or better reaction. Well that's you bring that up, Evan.
- 1:52:57Speaker 1: I'm just sorry, Todd. Did you have another question? Yeah?
- 1:52:59Speaker 1: I actually I don't really count Judean as our part
- 1:53:02Speaker 1: of our linebacker core. He's almost always on the edge,
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: isn't he not? Yeah? Yeah, Yeah, he's got a second
- 1:53:07Speaker 1: level and he's definitely a hand in the dirt linebacker. Yeah,
- 1:53:11Speaker 1: but you know more than that. Yeah, I think it's
- 1:53:14Speaker 1: hard because Van Noyon and how both did inside and outside,
- 1:53:18Speaker 1: so you kind of just count them. I mean, it's
- 1:53:20Speaker 1: certainly more a little bit divide it up. But I
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: wanted to say because you brought that up, and it
- 1:53:23Speaker 1: was a question in the mail back today of I
- 1:53:25Speaker 1: think like when the Patriots drafted Sony Michelle, it seemed
- 1:53:29Speaker 1: like the direction they were going was, all these defenses
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: are getting smaller to defend the pass. We're going to
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: run a fullback, We're going to pound it down their throat.
- 1:53:36Speaker 1: We're gonna have a deep stable of running backs. And
- 1:53:38Speaker 1: the question was, you know, kind of asking me about
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: that of you know, Damian Harris is going to be
- 1:53:41Speaker 1: free age, and why don't you just continue to resign
- 1:53:43Speaker 1: him and try to do this? And I'm like, it
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: sounds great in theory that you would be able to
- 1:53:48Speaker 1: do that, but it hasn't been effective, especially in the
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: most you know, critical games other than plus the sad
- 1:53:53Speaker 1: eighteen playoff run. Once he gets to a second contract,
- 1:53:56Speaker 1: you're gonna have to pay him, right and then you know, so,
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: I mean, I don't I don't think that's the big
- 1:53:59Speaker 1: part of it, because anyth they've got a stable and
- 1:54:01Speaker 1: unless he was something super special, I don't. I don't
- 1:54:03Speaker 1: see it. But is that the direction they're really trying
- 1:54:06Speaker 1: to go? And you know, what do you think, like
- 1:54:08Speaker 1: now getting rid of the fullback, does that kind of say,
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: all right, we tried that. We still need a stable
- 1:54:13Speaker 1: of backs, but we're not going to try to be
- 1:54:15Speaker 1: the team that we're going to just out tough everybody
- 1:54:17Speaker 1: because our run game is so good. I think unless
- 1:54:19Speaker 1: you got Derrick Henry, it's hard. It's hard to I think,
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: you know, I forget which player had said, or it
- 1:54:24Speaker 1: might have been a coach on the team. You know,
- 1:54:25Speaker 1: when you play, when you've got the fullback out there
- 1:54:27Speaker 1: kind of dictates what you're doing, you know, or else
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: he's just a guy, you know out there. So they
- 1:54:34Speaker 1: want to be more versatile on offense. It's like your
- 1:54:36Speaker 1: gut time ongomery a little bit instead of you know,
- 1:54:38Speaker 1: instead of Yaka being out there, maybe you got time ongomery.
- 1:54:41Speaker 1: You're moving him around, yeah, and doing some of that stuff.
- 1:54:44Speaker 1: Barton Poland writes in he said, firstly, I want to
- 1:54:46Speaker 1: say I'm very happy with the Evan news. He was
- 1:54:49Speaker 1: one of my favorite follows on Twitter and hearing him
- 1:54:52Speaker 1: on PEU was awesome. Now my question is it possible
- 1:54:55Speaker 1: that the backup situation may have been one of the
- 1:54:57Speaker 1: factors in when in Brown change sides this season. He's
- 1:55:01Speaker 1: talking about tackles. Harran is very serviceable left tackle, but
- 1:55:06Speaker 1: he's literally unplayable at right tackle. If Brown gets hurt,
- 1:55:10Speaker 1: he can just slide in at left tackle, and when
- 1:55:12Speaker 1: if Winden gets hurt, Brown can move to right tackle
- 1:55:15Speaker 1: where we know he's comfortable and we don't have to
- 1:55:17Speaker 1: play her on there. Last year he was just plugged
- 1:55:20Speaker 1: on the right side as Winn hasn't really played there.
- 1:55:23Speaker 1: But now with him having the whole season off and
- 1:55:26Speaker 1: with a natural right tackle playing left tackle, we don't
- 1:55:30Speaker 1: have to put her on on the right side. Of course,
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: it probably wasn't the main reason of the change, but
- 1:55:35Speaker 1: do you think the Haran situation may have had some
- 1:55:38Speaker 1: influence the factor? Certainly. I mean it's a good point
- 1:55:42Speaker 1: about Justin Haran that he played left tackle in college,
- 1:55:45Speaker 1: looks more comfortable playing left tackle, and you talk to
- 1:55:48Speaker 1: offensive lineman about it, and it's they say, here's a pen.
- 1:55:51Speaker 1: Now right with your left hand if you're a right hand,
- 1:55:53Speaker 1: right with your right hand if you're lefty, and see
- 1:55:55Speaker 1: how good you do. It's a little bit like that
- 1:55:57Speaker 1: because everything is backwards right, you're inside hands now outside,
- 1:56:01Speaker 1: your inside foots now outside. So it is a little
- 1:56:04Speaker 1: bit different, certainly. But I think the main factor for
- 1:56:07Speaker 1: moving Trent Brown to the left side is actually Cole Strange.
- 1:56:11Speaker 1: I think they want to have two stable veterans in
- 1:56:14Speaker 1: David Andrews and Trent Brown on either side of Cole Strange.
- 1:56:17Speaker 1: And with Isaiah Wayne, especially the way that he played
- 1:56:20Speaker 1: at times last year and the start that he got
- 1:56:22Speaker 1: out too, and all those types of things, I think
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: that they're looked at the situation with Michael a Wenu,
- 1:56:28Speaker 1: who really didn't take that step that they were kind
- 1:56:30Speaker 1: of expecting last year and end up putting Ted Harrison
- 1:56:33Speaker 1: to the starting lineup. And they want to make this
- 1:56:36Speaker 1: as comfortable for a guy like Cole Strange as possible
- 1:56:40Speaker 1: to be able to come in and start right away
- 1:56:42Speaker 1: as a rookie. So I think it's a big factor
- 1:56:45Speaker 1: that they put Trent over there knowing that they're they're
- 1:56:48Speaker 1: probably their best two linemen, or David Andrews and Trent Brown,
- 1:56:52Speaker 1: and now you put those two guys on either side
- 1:56:54Speaker 1: of the rookie I really, I really wonder if we
- 1:56:56Speaker 1: can get beat out by somebody, and I don't know who.
- 1:56:59Speaker 1: Trying to light a fire a win's ass. Yeah, well,
- 1:57:02Speaker 1: I mean it's his last year of his contract. I
- 1:57:03Speaker 1: know they're better be a fire already. But I mean,
- 1:57:06Speaker 1: even talking to Andy Hard a little bit this this offseason,
- 1:57:08Speaker 1: we're both kind of like man Stuper's kind of like
- 1:57:10Speaker 1: got that mold of a big, you know, right tackle
- 1:57:12Speaker 1: type guy. I mean, I mean he hasn't even been
- 1:57:14Speaker 1: able to get on the field. He's on NFI now,
- 1:57:16Speaker 1: So I my ship might have sailed with that, But
- 1:57:19Speaker 1: I do wonder if Win is susceptible to getting knocked out,
- 1:57:22Speaker 1: especially at right tackle, which is not like a position
- 1:57:25Speaker 1: that you know, is all that like demanding in the grants.
- 1:57:28Speaker 1: You better worry about right tackle now because Von Miller
- 1:57:30Speaker 1: is coming off right the Buffalo for two games, maybe
- 1:57:34Speaker 1: a third in the playoffs, and he's a guy that
- 1:57:36Speaker 1: there are a few guys. They're not many, but there
- 1:57:39Speaker 1: are a few guys that definitely prefer to play over
- 1:57:41Speaker 1: the right tackle and Von is one of them. So
- 1:57:43Speaker 1: he's going to be right in your kitchen, Isaiah Win,
- 1:57:46Speaker 1: come come late. It was at December first, I think
- 1:57:49Speaker 1: is that first game against Buffalo. But I think it
- 1:57:52Speaker 1: goes back to your point two Mike about the what's
- 1:57:55Speaker 1: the direction of the offense? Right and Cole strange. Is
- 1:57:57Speaker 1: this athletic offensive lineman tested out of the you know,
- 1:58:01Speaker 1: out of the gym at the combine nine nine percentile,
- 1:58:04Speaker 1: you know, nine point nine raz all that kind of stuff,
- 1:58:07Speaker 1: and you start to think about the direction of the offense,
- 1:58:09Speaker 1: and you were talking about is running the football really
- 1:58:13Speaker 1: the way to go? And I think you look at
- 1:58:15Speaker 1: that playoff game against Buffalo, and that was the first
- 1:58:17Speaker 1: perfect example that I can come to of you are
- 1:58:21Speaker 1: basically in like a model T and Josh Allen's in
- 1:58:23Speaker 1: the Tesla and you're trying to keep up with him
- 1:58:26Speaker 1: in this run first Jacob Johnson fullback style offense and
- 1:58:31Speaker 1: as much as you can come up with the formula
- 1:58:34Speaker 1: where you control the clock and grind out possessions and
- 1:58:39Speaker 1: ultimately at the end of the day you need to
- 1:58:41Speaker 1: execute a passing. Yeah, I mean, last year could have
- 1:58:43Speaker 1: all have been about Mac just like let's ease him in,
- 1:58:46Speaker 1: and this year they gotta let him loose. All right,
- 1:58:48Speaker 1: Well that's gonna be it for the show. What do
- 1:58:49Speaker 1: you think, Alex, You think he knows the stuff? I
- 1:58:51Speaker 1: think he does. Yeah, all right, so we'll we'll be
- 1:58:58Speaker 1: back tomorrow now, just programming note, the show will start
- 1:59:02Speaker 1: at nine fifteen tomorrow. It'll be a live show from
- 1:59:05Speaker 1: camp and the show will last throughout practice or until
- 1:59:09Speaker 1: we get bored, and we'll do that Wednesday, Thursday, Friday,
- 1:59:14Speaker 1: and Saturday. We're gonna be live at practice starting at
- 1:59:17Speaker 1: nine fifteen. Unless the team changes its schedule. That's when
