- 0:18Hi and welcome to the Curve Weakly, the podcast that keeps you up to date with all the money,
- 0:23business and stock market tea.
- 0:24And they're exactly what I needed to do, but it would take money to get there.
- 0:28Show me the money!
- 0:30For the record, feminism, by definition, is the belief that men and women should have equal rights
- 0:36and opportunities.
- 0:38Everyone should experience for us at least once in their lives and any.
- 0:40Shouldn't miss out just because she can't afford it.
- 0:42Help me, I'm poor.
- 0:44Hello!
- 0:46God, I thought it was a stealth fight.
- 0:47Hello, children.
- 0:49This is a brand new podcast for us.
- 0:51So this is called the Curve Weakly, and essentially this is again me just being selfish knowing
- 0:55what I need, which is a quick snappy update on what's going on in the world of business,
- 1:01finance, economics, inflation, etc.
- 1:05The stock market.
- 1:06Because self doesn't want to read the news, I keep it right now, she's very time poor.
- 1:09Do you just send me links to the articles of Guardian and all this, and I'm like, oh, who
- 1:14can be asked?
- 1:15And they're also so boring today.
- 1:1710 minutes, these episodes are going to be nice, quick, snappy.
- 1:22We're not fucking around.
- 1:23No, you don't want to be a me.
- 1:25Yeah, basically, I don't want to be you.
- 1:26Yeah, yeah.
- 1:28So I think what we should do, I don't know why not, I mean.
- 1:31Do you want me to cut that out or do you?
- 1:35So in terms of stock market, are you going to give us an overview for each episode on
- 1:41what's happening?
- 1:42And today, should we do one on like 2020 rather than, you know, I would kind of do
- 1:46like both.
- 1:47Okay, cool.
- 1:48Hit me.
- 1:49Educate me.
- 1:50Tell me what I need to know.
- 1:51So, first week of 2020, how are we going?
- 1:55Good.
- 1:56Actually.
- 1:57Yeah.
- 1:58I mean, we had a fucking shock last year.
- 1:59So you hope, you know, it's only up from here.
- 2:01Yeah.
- 2:02I mean, it could be down.
- 2:03Who knows?
- 2:04No one knows.
- 2:05How bad was it last year in terms of if you looked at the market from the start of the
- 2:07year, like the stock market to work at the end?
- 2:09Yeah.
- 2:10So the US stock market, so the S&P 500, which is the top 500 companies in the US, that
- 2:16was down 19% for the year.
- 2:17And it really kind of fell off a cliff for the first kind of six months and then just kind
- 2:21of bopped along the bottom there and tried to get up and up.
- 2:25No.
- 2:26And so it was a mudslide.
- 2:27Yeah.
- 2:28A mudslide.
- 2:29And then it just stuck in the mud for the rest of the year.
- 2:32So it was finished down 19%.
- 2:34What was it like comparatively to the year before?
- 2:37Yeah.
- 2:38So the year before was about, was over 20%.
- 2:41So it was about 20%.
- 2:44So it was like 40% more than last year if it was negative 19 and then last year it finished
- 2:49up 20.
- 2:50You've gone up here and you've come back down to here.
- 2:53Oh, okay.
- 2:54You haven't fallen 40.
- 2:55No, no, no.
- 2:56That would be if you keep signing from zero each year.
- 2:59Oh, I see.
- 3:00Because you're selling from differently.
- 3:01Starting to buy a point from where you ended at the end of December 2021.
- 3:05And that's because we've had two pretty good years post-COVID.
- 3:09The rest of 2020 was really strong.
- 3:11Then we had 2021 in France saying, woo-hoo, we got through this.
- 3:1522 and two been like, shit, these are all all the flying effects of inflation,
- 3:19high interest rates, throwing Russia Ukraine.
- 3:21You know, there was a lot going on in 2022.
- 3:24And then the NASDAQ, which is more the technology companies, high growth companies,
- 3:30indexes.
- 3:31Is that like Apple?
- 3:32Would that be in this app?
- 3:33Yeah, yeah.
- 3:34So they're all, all those, all the technology companies.
- 3:38All those, all those tech names like Google, Amazon.
- 3:41That index was of 33%.
- 3:43And it all means down.
- 3:44Down, yeah.
- 3:45And that's because they're more volatile.
- 3:48They're more high risk.
- 3:49You know, those were the stocks.
- 3:51And that was the index that did even better in 2021.
- 3:54So it's kind of those movements are more massive.
- 3:57So the movements are more massive.
- 3:59The movements down are massive.
- 4:00And so it's more high risk, more high volatility, which means higher returns when it goes up.
- 4:06And then the Australian stock market was down only 5%.
- 4:09So they had a pretty good year in the scheme of things.
- 4:12That's pretty good.
- 4:13And that's all because a lot of that index or that stock market has got a lot of resources name.
- 4:19So a lot of oil and gas names.
- 4:21And those companies have done particularly well this year, unfortunately.
- 4:25And then the New Zealand stock market was down about 11.
- 4:28So somewhere in between, there should be 500 in the ASX.
- 4:31So overall across the board, internationally, markets.
- 4:36We're down.
- 4:37We're down, yeah.
- 4:38Last year.
- 4:39But this is normal.
- 4:40This is what happens.
- 4:41And people tend to forget.
- 4:42And I mean, I came into investing, you know, kind of 10 years ago,
- 4:46give or take a few years.
- 4:47And we've kind of had a pretty good run.
- 4:50Like markets have gone up most years over, each year over those years.
- 4:54And so I haven't really known like a really tough year.
- 4:57And so this is quite a learning curve for me.
- 4:59Excuse the pun.
- 5:00That's really interesting.
- 5:02It's kind of funny.
- 5:03You do forget like, you know, people, for example,
- 5:06that were in the Lake Pure earthquake, you know, 100 years ago.
- 5:09They're like, oh, well, we've seen earthquakes before.
- 5:11But when it happens for the first time, when I was in Christchurch,
- 5:13you're like, what's happening?
- 5:15But it's like, you're looking, if you zoom out historically,
- 5:19these things have happened.
- 5:20So it's nothing to be like, all the stock markets never going to bounce back.
- 5:24We're just going to invest in stock though.
- 5:26Because it's actually just the, you know,
- 5:28like even if it's a lot of investing.
- 5:30Yeah.
- 5:31And a lot of older people will be like, oh, you know,
- 5:33this is part of the course.
- 5:34Yep, let's take advantage of this opportunity.
- 5:36Let's invest.
- 5:37And a lot of young people who may have only just started investing
- 5:39and lost money this year are probably like, fuck the stock market.
- 5:42It's fucking shit.
- 5:43And I get that.
- 5:44Like, but it's more about realizing that these years,
- 5:47these down years, or when the market finishes down,
- 5:49don't happen that often.
- 5:50So, you know, the stock market is really the only shop where
- 5:54when stuff goes on sale.
- 5:56Everyone runs for the hills.
- 5:57Everyone runs.
- 5:58Whereas when it's Boxing Day or Black Friday,
- 6:00everyone's like, I'm going to buy it.
- 6:01Right.
- 6:02Right.
- 6:03Right.
- 6:04Right.
- 6:05Right.
- 6:06Right.
- 6:07Right.
- 6:08Right.
- 6:09Right.
- 6:10Right.
- 6:11Right.
- 6:12Right.
- 6:21Right.
- 6:22Right.
- 6:23Right.
- 6:24Right.
- 6:25Right.
- 6:26Right.
- 6:27Right.
- 6:28Right.
- 6:29Right.
- 6:30Right.
- 6:31Right.
- 6:32Right.
- 6:33Right.
- 6:34Right.
- 6:35Right.
- 6:36Right.
- 6:37Right.
- 6:38Right.
- 6:39Right.
- 6:40Right.
- 6:41Right.
- 6:42Right.
- 6:43Right.
- 6:44Right.
- 6:45Right.
- 6:46Right.
- 6:47Right.
- 6:48Right.
- 6:49Right.
- 6:50Right.
- 6:51Right.
- 6:52Right.
- 6:53Right.
- 6:54Right.
- 6:55Right.
- 6:56Right.
- 6:57Right.
- 6:58Right.
- 6:59Right.
- 7:00Right.
- 7:01Right.
- 7:02Right.
- 7:03Right.
- 7:04Right.
- 7:05Right.
- 7:06Right.
- 7:07Right.
- 7:08Right.
- 7:09Right.
- 7:10Right.
- 7:11Right.
- 7:12Right.
- 7:13Right.
- 7:14Right.
- 7:15Right.
- 7:16Right.
- 7:17Right.
- 7:18Right.
- 7:19Right.
- 7:20Right.
- 7:21Yeah.
- 7:22And that means that.
- 7:40That means.
- 7:41That inflation is going to go-
- 7:43It's probably going to be growing
- 7:44It's going to go-
- 7:46It's probably going to be growing
- 7:47Yeah, what it means that companies have to pay staff more, which means they have to
- 7:51hire, increase their prices, and pass it on to consumers, because their costs have gone
- 7:56up, so everything kind of flows on.
- 7:57So if something's not increasing as much, wages, for example, then that means that inflation
- 8:03isn't going to increase as much, and the way to combat inflation is to increase interest
- 8:07rates.
- 8:08So if inflation isn't going up as much, interest rates don't have to go up as much either,
- 8:13which means mortgages don't have to go up, which means that people are paying less.
- 8:18You're paying less for staff, and we've got more in our pocket to spend.
- 8:22So for anyone that's like interest rates, what the hell are those?
- 8:25We have got a whole episode on that, and it was around the, I think, the UK debacle
- 8:31when their interest rates were all over the show, so if you're interested in learning
- 8:34more about that, that's a really good episode to listen to.
- 8:36What other key stuff has been happening?
- 8:38So on the company side of things, and kind of flowing into the jobs conversation was Amazon
- 8:43announced last week that it's cutting nearly 20,000 jobs, which on a flexion it had a huge
- 8:51hiring spree, and employed a lot of people during COVID, so this is kind of maybe more
- 8:56of a return to normal.
- 8:57Because everyone was probably at home, you know, starting, ordering shitloads at Amazon
- 9:02packages, right?
- 9:03Yeah, exactly.
- 9:04So they hired all their staff, whereas now we're kind of going back to a more normal
- 9:07environment, or even a slowing environment in 2023, so therefore they're cutting those
- 9:13jobs.
- 9:14But it is only about 1% of their total workforce, which means they hire a lot of people.
- 9:20And then another one, be bath and beyond, which is a retail store which sells beading
- 9:26bathroom and be on.
- 9:27Really?
- 9:28Be bath and beyond?
- 9:29That's so, thank you for explaining.
- 9:30I love that you explained that, and then you're just like throwing out like interest
- 9:34rates.
- 9:35Blah blah blah.
- 9:36Oh gosh.
- 9:37So the issue price fell over 20% last week.
- 9:41It's down, sorry, over 20% in a day, down for a few percent last week, down 90% in the
- 9:48last 12 months.
- 9:49Oh, Lordy.
- 9:50So if you're invested in being bath and beyond, I'll pass you some tissues, because I think
- 9:55this baby ain't gone anywhere nor upwards for a while.
- 9:59And then Costco, which is one that we've spoken about before on a podcast.
- 10:04This company had their financial results.
- 10:06So this is when, so companies being a public company, you have to report your results,
- 10:10your financial results to, to the public with two investors.
- 10:14And so they announced theirs and the share price jumped about 7% and they had a really good
- 10:19December.
- 10:20Their sales came in, I think it's about $24 billion, which is absolutely bananas.
- 10:26But this company is really well positioned, in my opinion, for next year, sorry, God,
- 10:31I'm going to keep saying that.
- 10:32I'm going to be like, we're 2023, for 2023, because we're kind of in a bit of an uncertain
- 10:40environment.
- 10:41Are we going to hear them to resist recession?
- 10:43Are we not?
- 10:44Nobody really knows.
- 10:45And this is a really good defensive retailer, defensive stock, a defensive company.
- 10:51So if anyone that does want to listen to the episode, it's called a deep dive into
- 10:55the fifth biggest retailer in the world, Costco, and it's a good explanation of probably
- 11:01what you're talking about.
- 11:02So basically, this is done well again.
- 11:04Yes, yeah.
- 11:05And then we also had first solar, I've invested in this.
- 11:09This is one of my first solar investments.
- 11:12First solar investments.
- 11:13Yeah, honestly, it's gone up so much, I think it's gone up like 85% or something last
- 11:19year.
- 11:20Very well.
- 11:21And it was up 7.8% last week.
- 11:25And that was all around the energy crisis in Europe.
- 11:29People are demanding more renewable energy, because they realize they need to kind of diversify
- 11:32and not rely on one source of energy, and the inflation reduction act in the US, which
- 11:38is funding for alternative sources of energy.
- 11:42So it's kind of in the right place, right time.
- 11:44It's at the top of the way that's running that way.
- 11:47Or up.
- 11:48Yeah, maybe it's pretty good surfing.
- 11:52But yeah, it has been a great stock call, Sophia, I think I'm going to be out of the
- 11:55job soon.
- 11:56I am going to be an investor.
- 11:57It's annoying, because I've only invested 150 US into it.
- 12:01I can't, I wish I had done this.
- 12:02It's bigger than my plan.
- 12:03This is what I always do to myself.
- 12:05Oh, OK.
- 12:06I'll invest in something, and it will go up.
- 12:07I'm like, damn it, I don't know if it's more.
- 12:09But then I guess if it goes down and you invest in things, it's even worse, isn't it?
- 12:13Exactly, yeah.
- 12:14So you've got to pat yourself on the back for the stocks that you don't invest in,
- 12:18pat yourself on the back for the ones that you don't invest in.
- 12:21Yeah.
- 12:22But all the stocks I've talked about today is purely just news, education, we're just
- 12:25deciphering what's gone on last week.
- 12:28This is not right.
- 12:29So the stocks will always go up and down in sideways.
- 12:31Yeah.
- 12:32It's up to you with circle.
- 12:33Yeah.
- 12:34What you want to invest in.
- 12:35But if you are interested in learning more, either on podcast format, then you can go
- 12:41back and listen to a bunch of other podcasts.
- 12:45Or if you're interested in getting a bit of a deep dive, you could look at joining the
- 12:49wait list for the Curve Classroom, which is actually starting in March.
- 12:52Yeah.
- 12:53It's so, so it's around the corner.
- 12:55Yeah.
- 12:56Which is universal global.
- 12:57We talk about a lot of global companies, not just New Zealand companies or Australian
- 13:01companies.
- 13:02But if you're in a money-saving phase and you're like, I definitely can't afford an online
- 13:07course right now, then we also do have heaps of really awesome emails.
- 13:11I love that I say awesome, but they go out every week.
- 13:14So you can join our newsletter database through the link in our show notes.
- 13:19But thank you for the update that can chat to you next week.
- 13:22Yeah, I know.
- 13:23How do you feel about a weekly podcast?
- 13:24Oh, no.
- 13:25I'm excited.
- 13:26Short and snappy and punchy.
- 13:28Yeah.
- 13:29Yeah.
- 13:30Sorry.
- 13:31I'm unbuttoning my pants, but it's not.
- 13:32Sorry.
- 13:33I need to go to the low.
- 13:34Let's wrap this up.
- 13:35Yeah, please.
- 13:36We're in a small studio.
- 13:37Keep your pants on.
- 13:38Yeah.
- 13:39We're really excited to have partnered with Audi to bring you the Curve Weekly, a podcast
