- 0:26Speaker 2: By New Orleans Saints coverage with some mattlibs mixed in.
- 0:30Speaker 3: Why don't you just go by mic?
- 0:32Speaker 2: It's time to talk black and Gold with a Mike
- 0:34Speaker 2: Triplett of New Orleans Dot Football. Presented by Benny's car Wash,
- 0:37Speaker 2: family owned and operated since nineteen fifty one.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Oh, that reminds me, I gotta go by Benny's because
- 0:47Speaker 1: I got I got my new vehicle, so I gotta
- 0:49Speaker 1: get the sticker for the wash club membership.
- 0:52Speaker 3: I need to do that.
- 0:52Speaker 1: That's on my old the wins you'll buy old car,
- 0:55Speaker 1: so I gotta get them the end. Hey, Mike, how are you?
- 0:58Speaker 3: You don't just show up at benny then they like
- 1:00Speaker 3: just recognize you, like Norm from tears and just.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Uh okay, so I mean something, yes, yes, yeah, but
- 1:13Speaker 1: usually it's like a right, here's the thing in Baton Rouge.
- 1:17Speaker 1: If there's a male between the age of like, well,
- 1:20Speaker 1: our primary demo is twenty five fifty four, but it
- 1:22Speaker 1: might even skew, like you can maybe expand it to
- 1:25Speaker 1: like eighteen.
- 1:25Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Generally in this town, they they are familiar with. They
- 1:32Speaker 1: see the bald head, beard, the whole thing, and they're
- 1:35Speaker 1: like scone. So I'll pull into Benny's and there's always
- 1:37Speaker 1: you know, the guys pushing the button or whatever, you know,
- 1:40Speaker 1: putting the tape on the back and so yes, yes,
- 1:42Speaker 1: they generally do. They're very nice and that's awesome and
- 1:45Speaker 1: I but but I still gotta go, Mike. I'm still
- 1:48Speaker 1: gotta go get the sticker for the thing, because you know,
- 1:51Speaker 1: it's like it's a little bar coach. So you pull
- 1:53Speaker 1: up and it's got to read the bar codess. A
- 1:54Speaker 1: little arm goes up. First world problems, man, that's.
- 1:57Speaker 3: To the arm. I mean, no matter how famous you
- 2:00Speaker 3: get the arm camp, I mean, I get the AI.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Now technology's getting better, maybe maybe car car wash arms
- 2:08Speaker 3: will start recognizing you too.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I mean still needs to read the barcode man, so
- 2:13Speaker 1: it's got to be there. Shout out as always good
- 2:17Speaker 1: to hear from you.
- 2:17Speaker 3: Man.
- 2:17Speaker 1: By the way, speaking of super famous and having lots
- 2:20Speaker 1: of money, Cam Jordan's made by a hund one hundred
- 2:23Speaker 1: and fifty million dollars in contracts in his career. He's
- 2:25Speaker 1: going to be back in New Orleans. Scale of one
- 2:30Speaker 1: to ten, Mike, how surprised are you that Jordan's gonna
- 2:34Speaker 1: play another season in New Orleans?
- 2:36Speaker 3: Oh, not surprised at all. If this had happened sooner
- 2:40Speaker 3: in the offseason that I would have, I would have
- 2:42Speaker 3: been like a one to two. But he let it.
- 2:47Speaker 3: He let it go longer than I expected. I mean,
- 2:49Speaker 3: when it lasted into mid June, I thought he either
- 2:54Speaker 3: must have really been insulted by the offer that they
- 2:57Speaker 3: made to him, or he must have really he you know,
- 3:00Speaker 3: started to settle with the idea like maybe I could
- 3:03Speaker 3: live without football and start started to enjoy it. But
- 3:08Speaker 3: at least for the first four or five months of
- 3:11Speaker 3: the offseason, this was the outcome I expected. I mean,
- 3:14Speaker 3: and for all the reasons he said today, I mean,
- 3:16Speaker 3: he couldn't really picture himself somewhere else. He couldn't really
- 3:20Speaker 3: walk away. He still loves it too much. He's too competitive.
- 3:24Speaker 3: He loves being at OTAs, he loves being in the
- 3:26Speaker 3: locker room, like this really is his lifeblood. And I
- 3:31Speaker 3: don't think it was about the money. I think it
- 3:33Speaker 3: was about maybe the money was a little insulting, especially
- 3:37Speaker 3: after he had that great season last year and he
- 3:40Speaker 3: was surprised they just made him the same offer again,
- 3:43Speaker 3: and that, you know, after he thought he gave back
- 3:46Speaker 3: a lot last year. I thought he kind of he
- 3:48Speaker 3: thought he'd proved something to them that the offer would
- 3:50Speaker 3: go up. But other than getting past that, everything else
- 3:55Speaker 3: fits here.
- 3:55Speaker 1: You said the word insulted or insulting twice in that answer.
- 4:01Speaker 1: You obviously have covered Cam Jordan for fifteen years. I mean,
- 4:04Speaker 1: you know him certainly better than I do. Does how
- 4:09Speaker 1: much does that feeling? Right? I mean, guy's going to
- 4:13Speaker 1: the Hall of Fame. Yeah, and and to be I'm
- 4:18Speaker 1: not even to say low ball, because I think it's
- 4:19Speaker 1: actually the appropriate offer. But to not get a better offer,
- 4:24Speaker 1: how do you think Cam Jordan reacted to that?
- 4:28Speaker 3: I mean, I think probably disappointment would be the prevailing emotion. Like,
- 4:34Speaker 3: I mean, your brain understands that's what happens when you're
- 4:37Speaker 3: thirty seven years old in the league. And even though
- 4:41Speaker 3: he did have the ten plus sacks last year, you know,
- 4:43Speaker 3: it was trending a different direction before that. That was
- 4:47Speaker 3: you know, his brain knows they should not bet on
- 4:50Speaker 3: ten more sacks this year. But you know, one of
- 4:54Speaker 3: his contemporaries is Cam Hayward for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He's
- 4:57Speaker 3: still getting twenty million dollars. He's still the face of
- 5:00Speaker 3: that franchise. Like it's just it's tough. Your brain might
- 5:04Speaker 3: understand it, but but you're kind of like I might
- 5:07Speaker 3: be on the mount rushmore of this franchise. Do the
- 5:10Speaker 3: rules have to apply to meat Kiff?
- 5:13Speaker 1: Which is kind of wild mic because the Saints, who
- 5:18Speaker 1: have been a horrible cap team, have showed remarkable discipline
- 5:23Speaker 1: in free agents, especially with their own. Where does that
- 5:26Speaker 1: come from?
- 5:28Speaker 3: Well, it comes from necessity for one thing. I mean,
- 5:32Speaker 3: they've been jam so close to the ceiling of the
- 5:36Speaker 3: cap since about two since about the year Kim Jordan's
- 5:39Speaker 3: started playing in the NFL that they've they've had to
- 5:43Speaker 3: they've had they had asked duce McAllister to take a
- 5:46Speaker 3: pay cut. They had to ask uh, Defie Henderson to
- 5:50Speaker 3: take a pay cut. They certainly did it with Marcus Colston.
- 5:53Speaker 3: They had to ask him to take a major pay cut.
- 5:55Speaker 3: They've done with Tyron Matthew, They've done it with the
- 5:58Speaker 3: Mario Davis, They've done it. They're maybe going to do
- 6:01Speaker 3: with Ala Kamara. They've done it with Kim Jordan multiple times.
- 6:06Speaker 3: So they could put everyone under the CAP. It's been
- 6:08Speaker 3: it's been a part of how they've done business. And
- 6:10Speaker 3: I actually think one of the uglier parts of of
- 6:13Speaker 3: of CAP management is going to franchise icons and and
- 6:16Speaker 3: trying to trying to shave a million here and shave
- 6:19Speaker 3: a million there, which ultimately doesn't matter except for what
- 6:22Speaker 3: it represents. So that that has been a big part
- 6:25Speaker 3: of their business model, to be honest.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Mike, on the field, where you've got Chase Young, Carl Granderson,
- 6:32Speaker 1: and then you when it added to additional players that position, Yeah,
- 6:37Speaker 1: what does like, how does Cam fit in and what
- 6:40Speaker 1: what does it mean for the group that he's back
- 6:41Speaker 1: as Mike. You tell me if I'm wrong, But it
- 6:43Speaker 1: certainly looked like they went and added Wilson and Jennings
- 6:47Speaker 1: like with the idea that Cam wasn't going to be.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Back, yeah, I mean it'll be really interesting. And Chris
- 6:53Speaker 3: Rump they re signed as well. There's not there's not
- 6:55Speaker 3: enough room for all those guys, so somebody's not making
- 6:57Speaker 3: the team or you know, injuries could always sort things out.
- 7:02Speaker 3: And the one that's really interesting I think for Cam's
- 7:04Speaker 3: role is in Forney Jennings because his specialty has been
- 7:09Speaker 3: being an edge rusher who's really good at run defense,
- 7:12Speaker 3: and that's Kim's thing. So you know, Tyree Wilson might
- 7:16Speaker 3: be more of a pass rush specialist. Chris Rump is
- 7:18Speaker 3: a lot smaller. He's a six foot two, you know,
- 7:21Speaker 3: outside linebacker for a three four defense. Cam is is
- 7:26Speaker 3: a you know, big defensive end who's who's great against
- 7:28Speaker 3: the run. So I do wonder if this room for
- 7:32Speaker 3: him and Chase Young and Carl Granderson and Infernie Jennings
- 7:35Speaker 3: all to play in the same game. You know, sometimes
- 7:38Speaker 3: this stuff sorts itself out. Not all these guys are
- 7:41Speaker 3: always available all the time. You need depth. But it
- 7:45Speaker 3: will be interesting. I mean, I think his snaps will
- 7:47Speaker 3: have to be affected if both of those guys prove
- 7:49Speaker 3: worthy of making the team.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Mike Triplett, New Orleans doft football at Mike Triplett if
- 7:54Speaker 1: you want to give him a follow. Is there anything
- 7:58Speaker 1: let's say anything, But what is notable worth watching at
- 8:03Speaker 1: mini camp?
- 8:05Speaker 3: Well, obviously everything that takes place in the passing game,
- 8:09Speaker 3: so quarterback, pass catchers, pass defenders, defensive backs, linebackers, and
- 8:15Speaker 3: sometimes then dropping into coverage. You know, all that is
- 8:19Speaker 3: highly competitive, offensive and defensive line and run game is
- 8:24Speaker 3: useless to try to watch. But quarterback timing, quarterback rhythm,
- 8:28Speaker 3: receiver routes, defensive backs. You can make pretty decent judgments
- 8:32Speaker 3: on those guys, for sure, especially when you're talking about
- 8:36Speaker 3: everything we want to see is related to Kellen Moore
- 8:39Speaker 3: installing an offense and Tyler Shuck running it.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Alvin Kamara is someone you mentioned. Do you expect any
- 8:48Speaker 1: update on Kamara? Like before training camp.
- 8:55Speaker 3: I've thrown my expectations out the window because this one
- 8:58Speaker 3: has been so messy and so unique. It's not like
- 9:02Speaker 3: I mean, they've asked. I just said it. They've asked
- 9:05Speaker 3: for two decades. They've asked franchise icons to take pay cuts.
- 9:09Speaker 3: Duce McAllister all the way through to tomorrow, Davis cam Jordan,
- 9:14Speaker 3: It's fine you do that. You cut players. They've cut
- 9:17Speaker 3: franchise icons because it's a cold, hard business, and it's
- 9:21Speaker 3: what are you not even? What have you done for
- 9:23Speaker 3: me lately? What are you gonna do for me next?
- 9:26Speaker 3: But they haven't asked Alvin to take a pay cut.
- 9:28Speaker 3: They're they're handling this so strangely that it's it's they're
- 9:34Speaker 3: kind of like, I don't know, hoping he chooses to
- 9:37Speaker 3: walk away. It's it's weird. They're like they're almost ghosting him.
- 9:42Speaker 3: They were surprised when he showed up last week and
- 9:45Speaker 3: he was like pulling a move on them, like guess
- 9:47Speaker 3: what if you guys aren't gonna call me, I'm just
- 9:50Speaker 3: gonna show up and what are you gonna do about it? Like?
- 9:53Speaker 3: And then today he shows up and they don't. They
- 9:55Speaker 3: don't use him in seven on seven or eleven on eleven, Like,
- 9:58Speaker 3: I don't know what they're endgame is here. I don't
- 10:01Speaker 3: know why they haven't offered him a pay cut yet.
- 10:03Speaker 3: I don't know why they haven't cut him yet. And
- 10:06Speaker 3: if they want to keep him, boy, they are letting
- 10:09Speaker 3: the relationship get a little fractured if they plan to
- 10:12Speaker 3: keep him. This is how you treat someone. So I
- 10:14Speaker 3: have no idea. If it's like he's an asset, we
- 10:18Speaker 3: don't want to just cut him, because maybe we'll meet
- 10:20Speaker 3: him in September if there's injuries, or maybe another team
- 10:23Speaker 3: will come calling if they have injuries, and we'll be
- 10:25Speaker 3: glad we held on to them. But otherwise, I have
- 10:28Speaker 3: no idea why they've waited till mid June without even
- 10:32Speaker 3: discussing a new contract with them. They're obviously not going
- 10:35Speaker 3: to keep him in his current contract, that I know
- 10:37Speaker 3: for a fact, but why they haven't even talked to
- 10:40Speaker 3: pay cut or offered a pay cut, I have no idea.
- 10:43Speaker 1: It sounds like you just described the plot to how
- 10:45Speaker 1: to lose a guy in ten days?
- 10:47Speaker 3: It is. I think I made the Police Academy, you know,
- 10:51Speaker 3: Steve Gutenberg trying to get trying to get fired for
- 10:54Speaker 3: the Police Academy because he couldn't quit analogy. But here's
- 10:57Speaker 3: might be better.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Yet it's so weird. What do you think happens?
- 11:05Speaker 3: I think, ultimately I'm still going to predict that he
- 11:08Speaker 3: stays in place for this team because I think he's
- 11:11Speaker 3: the second best running back on the team. I think
- 11:13Speaker 3: he's better than Devin Neil. I think he's better than
- 11:16Speaker 3: other estimate, and they're trying to build a team that
- 11:17Speaker 3: can win the NFC South, So why not why not
- 11:22Speaker 3: have some depth there and have Alvin Kamara as your
- 11:25Speaker 3: one B or you know, capable backup or change a
- 11:29Speaker 3: pace guy in the passing game. So I still keep
- 11:33Speaker 3: thinking that makes sense, but what they've done doesn't make
- 11:36Speaker 3: sense to me. So I don't know if I can
- 11:38Speaker 3: apply logic to the situation.
- 11:39Speaker 1: It's my triplet New Orleans Dot Football at Mike Triplet.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Is there anything else the use of last thing that
- 11:46Speaker 1: you saw today that I haven't asked about that I
- 11:48Speaker 1: should have asked about because you were there and I wasn't.
- 11:50Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I think I think when it comes
- 11:53Speaker 3: to deciding what's going to make or break this team,
- 11:54Speaker 3: I think it's the secondary. I mean injury. It's the
- 11:57Speaker 3: injuries number one. Like I mean, you you know, I
- 12:01Speaker 3: really like their offensive line. They lose any one of
- 12:03Speaker 3: those guys, they're in trouble. You know, the receivers, if
- 12:05Speaker 3: they lose a lot of advertising, they're in trouble. I mean,
- 12:07Speaker 3: that's what's gonna make or break this team. But as
- 12:10Speaker 3: far as they're healthy players, there's so many question marks
- 12:13Speaker 3: in this secondary. Kolid McKinstry had a really good day
- 12:16Speaker 3: to day. He's had a couple of those. I think
- 12:18Speaker 3: we've liked what we've seen from Yonis Sanker trying to
- 12:20Speaker 3: move into that star position. I think we've liked what
- 12:23Speaker 3: we've seen from Julian Blackman in that deep safety position.
- 12:28Speaker 3: But man, that they all have to work so you
- 12:31Speaker 3: can evaluate them in a passing camp, and i'd so,
- 12:34Speaker 3: I'd say so far it's been a positive ots in
- 12:36Speaker 3: mini camp. Per Sanker in a new job, Julian Blackman
- 12:40Speaker 3: back in that other job, and and Kulid McKinstry is
- 12:42Speaker 3: sort of being the man now with with Alante Taylor gone.
- 12:48Speaker 3: But but those three guys have to, you know, they
- 12:51Speaker 3: have to have a great trading camp. They have to
- 12:52Speaker 3: have a great season because it all kind of falls apart.
- 12:55Speaker 3: If those guys aren't really really good.
- 12:56Speaker 1: That's interesting. I certainly agree, well said my triplet New
- 13:01Speaker 1: Orleans Dot Football. Always appreciate it, man, thank you
- 13:05Speaker 3: Thanks for having me
