Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So employment confidence is once again down across the country,
- 0:03Speaker 1: people struggle with job security and recruitment. The Westpact McDermott
- 0:07Speaker 1: Miller Employment Confidence Index has dropped to eighty eight point three.
- 0:11Speaker 1: This is the lowest level since September twenty twenty, a
- 0:13Speaker 1: level last scene post COVID in twenty twenty. Tom O'Neil
- 0:18Speaker 1: is an employment expert and a manager of CV dot
- 0:20Speaker 1: co dot Nz and is with me this morning? Is
- 0:25Speaker 1: he indeed with me here this morning? Oh? There he
- 0:29Speaker 1: is up there. I found you, Tommy. You were missing
- 0:32Speaker 1: on my computer screen. Good morning to you, jar your screen.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Why our employers still pessimistic?
- 0:40Speaker 2: Ah, look, you know it's I think obviously we've got,
- 0:44Speaker 2: you know, the specter of tariffs from America, and I
- 0:48Speaker 2: just think it's it's the massively bad hangover of just
- 0:53Speaker 2: all the facts that have been sort of conspiring against
- 0:57Speaker 2: New Zealand over the last for the three for five years.
- 1:00Speaker 2: And it's interesting there's next messages out there. The SEEK
- 1:05Speaker 2: had an employment report that just came out recently, you know,
- 1:07Speaker 2: the job board, and they set after two years of
- 1:10Speaker 2: steady decline and job ed volumes the past eight months
- 1:14Speaker 2: has been brought to be flat now. I know that
- 1:16Speaker 2: doesn't sound like good news. That's just some degree that's
- 1:21Speaker 2: shine that actually, you know, I think I liked to
- 1:26Speaker 2: think we've actually now flat out. And you know, as
- 1:31Speaker 2: the year progresses and you know, as hopefully the tarastoe
- 1:35Speaker 2: tune into something that is going to be massively destructive
- 1:39Speaker 2: for our economy, we can move forward and actually even
- 1:42Speaker 2: have a bump floader in the year, hope.
- 1:43Speaker 1: So a lot of people are playing for jobs right now.
- 1:45Speaker 1: But you can smell the desperation, can't you.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Oh? Absolutely absolutely. And this is the thing being a
- 1:53Speaker 2: candidate out there, you know, you need to you need
- 1:56Speaker 2: to try and push that, you know, desperation. I sort
- 2:00Speaker 2: of describe it like being a duck. You see a
- 2:03Speaker 2: duck on a lake swimming along the top half of
- 2:06Speaker 2: the duck is all nice and calm and downstairs under
- 2:08Speaker 2: the water, but you don't think going crazy. And that's
- 2:12Speaker 2: what we need to do when we're candidates, when we
- 2:14Speaker 2: go in to the market. And it's a horrible thing
- 2:17Speaker 2: to say that the end of the day, employers smell desperation,
- 2:21Speaker 2: they really really do. And so it's important during that
- 2:26Speaker 2: whole interview time, anytime you tap in touch with employers.
- 2:30Speaker 2: You just put on that top half of the duck,
- 2:32Speaker 2: you know, you just put on that brave, confident face
- 2:37Speaker 2: and just really get out there.
- 2:38Speaker 1: I call it. I call it put on your big
- 2:40Speaker 1: boy pants and just and just go in there with confidence.
