- 0:45Welcome back to the boundary Corner podcast on a walk-off
- 0:50Wednesday. That's right.
- 0:54Yes sir walk all I'm gonna say I'm Brian Siegel.
- 0:58Yeah, just walk it off. Their Hokies baseball against
- 1:03Liberty got two in the ninth. After going scoreless for eight
- 1:08Innings, that's the way you. It's one of their sluggish
- 1:13midweek games and you can pull those out way to go.
- 1:17It's is a buddy. Matt, Neal always said, it's
- 1:20midweek college, baseball, you never.
- 1:22What is going to happen. And tonight, they couldn't score
- 1:25and they get two in the ninth. The Bases Loaded Goodwin Goodwin
- 1:30going into a big series which we'll discuss in a little while.
- 1:32But buddy, happy hump day. Welcome back to the first time.
- 1:36We've had a show solo since that.
- 1:40Yeah, yeah, yeah. We haven't ridden.
- 1:43Solo in a wild, man. I almost forgot how to do it.
- 1:45I've got ya. All right though, let's see how
- 1:48this goes, even over the last three months, everybody.
- 1:51That's Come on as guests our buddy Rob e, Compton the white
- 1:55Vic. David Cunningham with text
- 1:57sideline, Jordan Williams, which got a great story about him on a
- 2:02sharing. A second.
- 2:04Who else Mikey Mike, McDaniels? All you got is who came on all
- 2:09sometimes, as always, but I want to hit real quick.
- 2:13Brian about Jordan Williams. He was on with us in a few weeks
- 2:16later. He ran a camp down at Cox.
- 2:19He, I think he mentioned it during the show if he didn't, he
- 2:22definitely was pushing it out on social media and a girl, I went
- 2:25to college with her son, got to go to this camp and she was just
- 2:29raving about how awesome it was how awesome Jordan was.
- 2:33He had guys like T, Higgins down there, helping out with the
- 2:35drills and it made me even happier that we had him on the
- 2:40show, just a few weeks before that.
- 2:43Yeah. I mean, he was hoping that up on
- 2:45social media a lot. I know, I retweeted it and
- 2:47shared it out so it sounds like it was a big hit down there and
- 2:52you know, kudos for him for running that well and being so
- 2:55personal with everybody that showed up for that, it's awesome
- 2:58man. Just doing what he can.
- 3:01And obviously, he got drafted or signed with the dolphins after
- 3:05the draft which is great for him, but man, you talked about
- 3:08like of that, Florida weather. So he's back, he's back down
- 3:10there and in the floor. AA.
- 3:12But I mean when he training in Miami.
- 3:15Yeah. Well he was training down in
- 3:16Florida. I don't know if those Miami but
- 3:17he was training, either way. He didn't have to move too far
- 3:20so great for him and a lot of the other guys will mention a
- 3:24little while as well. But Prime we have so many things
- 3:26to break down. Let's hit some kind of news and
- 3:28notes headlines before we get into the deep stuff and let's
- 3:31start with this. The Fuller Brothers officially
- 3:35have a room. Now, in the Virginia Tech
- 3:36football facility, the defensive back room.
- 3:38Are you shocked by that? Not sure.
- 3:41Why not? Shocked at all.
- 3:43But Vince, Cory Kylie and Kendall make a, I'm guessing a
- 3:48pretty hefty donation to Virginia, Tech to get that.
- 3:53Get that name on there because you don't, you don't pay five,
- 3:57you don't pay six figures for room.
- 3:59Usually pay a lot for and it's awesome.
- 4:02What that families meant to the university to the football
- 4:05program, that that happened. Yes, it's a big moment for them
- 4:11and it just goes to reinforce, you know, the the families, the
- 4:15brothers that that end up playing for the Hokies and it
- 4:19just goes to reinforce that for future Generations.
- 4:22Now, they look at that Fuller room.
- 4:25You know, that's not, that's not named after one brother, that's
- 4:28named after in honor of all four of them.
- 4:30So, Four brothers. And then, one of the statements
- 4:34that Kyle said talking about Coach Prime, the entire staff
- 4:37had made a very concerted effort, connect with the entire
- 4:40lung by base and we feel welcome in Blacksburg.
- 4:44It's awesome to hear that probably made a comment about
- 4:47the tremendous contribution that financially they made to the
- 4:50football program and then this comes out a few days after the
- 4:57reach for excellent goal. Brian.
- 4:59There's a 400 million-dollar gold yet.
- 5:01Five years is the expectation right?
- 5:04Yeah it was it was a five-year timeframe put on the to reach
- 5:09the goal for the fundraising In Your Wildest Dreams.
- 5:13Did you think they would hit halfway right at a year after
- 5:16announce them? I did not I did not think we
- 5:19would be having a Bon Jovi situation already.
- 5:24We're halfway there. We're halfway there.
- 5:28It's wild 400. Dollar campaign, 200 million.
- 5:34The Press was at least was just after the spring game on the
- 5:3728th of February, few days after our last podcast.
- 5:41And I mean, it's the bump, right?
- 5:47I think it's the bump. Yeah, I mean, this is a, it's a
- 5:53athletic wise reaching thing, but I think having what we've
- 5:57had with Coach proc come on, On how he's been on social media,
- 6:01how active he's been in the community, how active he's been
- 6:04at fundraising events. When people get that, people are
- 6:09a hell of a lot more willing to open up their wallets and their
- 6:13checkbooks. Yep, bro.
- 6:15Campaign like this, what I'm interested to see if the numbers
- 6:19ever come out is, how much did donations pick up?
- 6:23End of November first part of December.
- 6:25And I'm not just saying that as went a compared to Prior.
- 6:29I'm saying that as the momentum behind Athletics, as a hole
- 6:34between cry, getting hired and the things he's done since he's
- 6:39been here, the Run for the men's basketball women's basketball.
- 6:43And now everything that the spring sports are doing with
- 6:48softball and baseball, which I know we're about to get to, but
- 6:51I think if you look at Kind of the way things are going with
- 6:55all the sports. And I don't want to leave out
- 6:57wrestling either. No, you know, or remember yeah,
- 7:01eventually. Yeah.
- 7:03It was like, not to be joking about like serious situations,
- 7:08but it's like, we're in the middle.
- 7:10We're in the middle of the ocean.
- 7:11Everything was calm in this thing underneath the ocean
- 7:15called Brent, fry erupted, and it's just been this huge tsunami
- 7:20of momentum, like you said, through the winter, Ports.
- 7:23And now, we're into the spring Sports and they're carrying it.
- 7:27And, I mean, you know, let's flip to that Brown.
- 7:29Let's talk about the softball team.
- 7:31I mean, they're already the regular season Champs.
- 7:35Yep. There without a shadow of doubt
- 7:38that I have a regional in Blacksburg.
- 7:42In man you got to kind of think their number two in the country.
- 7:49Yeah. Unless they say how did you say
- 7:54it the other day about them? Not being able to host the Super
- 7:56Regional? A whole lot of teams behind
- 8:01them. Got to do some good shit and
- 8:03they've got a pretty much lose immediately.
- 8:06Yeah, early and often it's going to be, I mean, Regional host
- 8:13seems locked at this point. Super Regional hope, seems very
- 8:15likely. Yeah.
- 8:17Even, I mean, because you sit here and the only teams behind
- 8:21them, and I'm looking at the USA Today.
- 8:22Rankings Florida, State, Arkansas, Alabama, UCLA,
- 8:26Oklahoma State, Arizona, State. That's the top eight Dukes.
- 8:29Nine. You know, they beat you can a
- 8:32series, they beat FSU in a series.
- 8:34What are you value more? So, let's say they don't have a
- 8:37great tournament. Do you value duker Florida,
- 8:41State potentially getting hot in the tournament and doing
- 8:43something, or do you value a regular season?
- 8:46Which essentially what that's a Super Regional is, it's a
- 8:48regular season, best-of-three match up.
- 8:50You went to you go to the College World Series.
- 8:52Yeah. I think you kind of Honor that
- 8:57that format that you're playing. And I mean, we talk about this
- 9:00all the time with we've baseball to with the whole wild card play
- 9:06in that. I don't like that shit.
- 9:08So I'm all about the format is the format.
- 9:13So I think you would ride that direction in my opinion.
- 9:19Yeah, I think you would too. Yeah.
- 9:21Brian does not like the one playoff format.
- 9:23He's Always objected for 2 to 3 every every everything else in
- 9:28baseball is the series. Then you have this one this one
- 9:32game for whatever reason is a one and done.
- 9:34The only other scenario that would be and is a tiebreaker to
- 9:37get into the said playoffs. Anyway, that's the.
- 9:40Only other scenario that you even have this in play and
- 9:44you're going to make that, you know, If you want a team to be
- 9:48in the postseason, put them in the postseason.
- 9:50In play it normal, they play it or play at least a modified
- 9:56version of a series. Weatherizing of three.
- 9:59Yeah, two or three different games series, three games, give
- 10:01me a double header and a travel for the third one.
- 10:05There you go. And if you're traveling, you're
- 10:07going to wherever they're going to play Stadium, you don't give
- 10:10the worst team. We get a home game.
- 10:12That's my opinion. One other thing we forgot to
- 10:15mention with softball. First of all, shout out
- 10:18Mackenzie Lauder Hometown girl or we grew up.
- 10:22Catcher. Hello Cheri.
- 10:24We heard her dad taught us. Let's go with your sisters.
- 10:30Yep. One other thing Kela.
- 10:34Richard shocker, shocker picture of the year in the ACC, after
- 10:37going 15 and 0. Who could have seen that coming?
- 10:40Not everyone question is, is she going to get any national
- 10:44accolades? I mean, I think she's guaranteed
- 10:46All-American. Even I mean, thank you, blink.
- 10:48At that is Domino's, she can be. I mean, if if not that's a
- 10:53big-time snug. Oh, maybe that's what we need.
- 10:57Then a little snug going into the little snug going into the
- 11:03Into the into playoff mode. That might be the thing to do,
- 11:08all right? We just mentioned it at the top
- 11:10of the program. A few minutes ago, baseball
- 11:12walks off beats. Liberty baseball is now me get
- 11:16it up here. What are they 34?
- 11:21And 634 and ate something ridiculous up.
- 11:26Here we go. No 34 and 10.
- 11:28Excuse me. Excuse that one little bit there
- 11:31again. 77 games left in the regular.
- 11:33Ziggler season, seven games left.
- 11:35You've got a huge Series this weekend with Louisville.
- 11:39Louisville number 7 in the country by Baseball, America
- 11:43text for. We just mentioned it a couple
- 11:46seconds ago. Brian I think Regional there's
- 11:52one of the best 16 teams in the country.
- 11:54They're going to get a regional birth host regardless.
- 11:58Yeah. We're going I don't think that's
- 12:00I don't think that seems outlandish.
- 12:03I'd like I said I think some serious stuff would have to
- 12:07happen in the coming, you know, a couple weeks for for that to
- 12:11be in Jeopardy and you talked about a big Series against
- 12:14Louisville, I think that's going to be Really the biggest series
- 12:18down the stretch for the close of out, if they can can get that
- 12:21series, I feel really good about going ahead and stamp in them
- 12:25for that Regional host. For sure Regional hosted or
- 12:28Conference tournament. At the end of the month.
- 12:30It'll be on Labor Day weekend. I think it's probably going to
- 12:34be some hook. He's down there.
- 12:35It's going to be down in Charlotte at truest field.
- 12:37So for those who are in the Charlotte area, I mean I've had
- 12:42the opportunity to go to an ACC Baseball term.
- 12:43It's a lot of fun. Yeah, so fun to go to You're
- 12:47seeing you know you've got you see a lot of talent all over the
- 12:54field regardless if you're going to see the Hokies play or if
- 12:58you're going to see the or any other team play, there is a ton
- 13:04of guys who are going to be in the MLB.
- 13:07From the ACC in the, um, coming year.
- 13:09So definitely worth a worth your time.
- 13:13If you're in the Charlotte area and got nothing else going on
- 13:15that weekend. Well, there's a bunch of Hokies
- 13:18in the Charlotte area. It's not that bad of a drive
- 13:20from the Roanoke and Blacksburg area down to Charlotte.
- 13:25So if you can get there, get there.
- 13:28If you can get there, get there, if you can hopefully the ACC
- 13:32network will show the games but we know how funky that network
- 13:37is. They'll be like blacking out
- 13:38game showing replays of the pit spring game or something but hey
- 13:45we got the game tonight so oh yeah there is there's a chance.
- 13:53There is a chance. I Braun baseball softball.
- 13:57Ball knocked out. Let's talk about basketball
- 14:00because basketball has had a hell of a last few weeks, kind
- 14:05of revamping the roster after losing some guys.
- 14:08And let's look at kind of the kind of the biggest name per se
- 14:12coming out, is John Camden transferring in from Memphis?
- 14:20You know, Camden was a pretty much a three star or shooting a
- 14:23four-star guy coming out of high school top, 150 player 68 205.
- 14:31What do you think? I mean is this just Keys light
- 14:35from a style and everything? Now I think he's got a little
- 14:39bit more versatility here and it's the question is going to be
- 14:44is he going to be you know that the three the four, the five.
- 14:48I don't know how it's going to look real to talk a little more
- 14:51about some other guys that might fill in those spots.
- 14:53But you can is a guy that gives you kind of that that
- 14:57versatility can do it. A little bit in the in the front
- 15:02and the back court. You know, could be a big three,
- 15:10you could play the poor and might give you five in a pinch
- 15:16depending on if you want to go small.
- 15:17So it does give some flexibility with how Mi kyung makes the
- 15:22lineups there. It's very, very true.
- 15:25And, you know, we needed some, you know, leaving losing key was
- 15:28big, right. You lose a score.
- 15:31Well they go out. Look at the lower level parts of
- 15:33D1. They go out to Wright State and
- 15:36get Grant Basile the 69 225-pound forward out of
- 15:42Wisconsin. Last year, averaged 18 and a
- 15:44half in game, eight and a half boards.
- 15:46A game shot. 50% from the field and did it get some good
- 15:51competition to you know they lost Arizona in that opening
- 15:54game. He skill scored, 21, grab five
- 15:57boards, three blocks, any shot, you know, Forty percent from the
- 16:01field against a really good Arizona team.
- 16:04So he's coming from a small school but he's shown that he
- 16:07can play with the bigger guys. Yeah.
- 16:10Sure. These are both the bigger guys
- 16:11and he's shown that he can do a lot of different things.
- 16:15He's got a similar skill set to illuma but I think he's a little
- 16:18bit more willing to bang in the post.
- 16:22So there might be a little more rebounding Edge there with him
- 16:28on the court. Not probably not quite as Good
- 16:31stepping out. But, you know, we'll see what we
- 16:35can get from him. But he's part of this, big,
- 16:38revamping of the front court that Mike young needs to do in
- 16:42order to be ready for this upcoming year with.
- 16:44But it's kind of still hanging in the balance there and illuma
- 16:47already declaring for the draft, it's very true.
- 16:51And then just yesterday they get one more front court.
- 16:54Now, I'm hoping I'm pronouncing his name, right?
- 16:57My li G. You'll petite.
- 17:00And I'm pretty Oz in the last name, right?
- 17:0369 £260 transferring from rice from Reidsville North Carolina.
- 17:08So you actually went to high school down in Burlington so
- 17:11very probably familiar with Virginia Tech last year 7, know,
- 17:17right out eight points a game grabbed over for boards a game
- 17:21and you know, limited minutes on the averaged about 13 minutes of
- 17:26game. But that's a big body down low.
- 17:29And it feels like Or at times, there were games this year, we
- 17:33were missing, not necessarily A 7-footer but just a big body
- 17:37that could, you know, give some fouls make guys have to work
- 17:42hard. And to me, he kind of fills that
- 17:45role when they want to go with a more defensive.
- 17:47Maybe not a score and Presence at the 5.
- 17:50Yeah, I don't know if he's going to end up being the starter at
- 17:53the five or if he's going to be coming off the bench and kind of
- 17:56just you know playing with some of the matchups they are to give
- 18:00Guys, a blow. But I definitely think you've
- 18:03got some potential here. Average 13 minutes.
- 18:07We saw when his minutes went up, his scoring went up, so it isn't
- 18:12just a, you know, more minutes is getting more production which
- 18:17is a good sign especially if he's asked to even do, you know
- 18:21up to 18 or 20 even if he's coming off the bench but it's a
- 18:26big body. It's a guy that downloading get
- 18:28some rebounds for you. I don't Know if he's going to
- 18:31end up having more of a guess on or or a big Jon type role in the
- 18:39offense or if they're going to try to do something different
- 18:41with him but I think it's a solid pick up and again
- 18:44reinforces that that front Court it does I definitely don't think
- 18:49he's a story. I definitely think he's a bench
- 18:51guy. Boring match up.
- 18:54You know, you take somebody like a cot with Carolina.
- 18:58There you go. Is he still following him score
- 19:01some points on him? Yeah.
- 19:01But is he going to have to work a little harder at times?
- 19:04Absolutely. And then, you got five fouls to
- 19:07give, so I mean, I see that out of this, I think was seals
- 19:12probably going to be the guaranteed starter, just because
- 19:14Camden got no play last year. You got to figure out exactly
- 19:18what he is. He wasn't hiring guy coming out
- 19:22but he doesn't have that experience.
- 19:23Like Basile does what were we thinking today?
- 19:28The Duel is definitely the point guard right there is Maddox or
- 19:33is Couture your too. I think I like Maddox at the two
- 19:38and then depending on how what we find out, we can get from
- 19:42Camden. Either start with Camden and use
- 19:46Couture is kind of your your 23 pivot player Off the Bench or
- 19:51you can use you kick a tour in there and use Camden as the
- 19:57pivot from the 34 as a sub Off the Bench there and then ship
- 20:03Couture to the to the to Camden comes on when you need to and
- 20:07you got War Two values like Rodney rice coming in.
- 20:11I think what I'm already putting in my head as the first couple
- 20:15months be patient. Because I think last year a lot
- 20:19of us and I'm one of them, I was not patient, we were losing
- 20:22those games. I wasn't but I think as I got
- 20:26into it, what Mike young was trying to do is find his best
- 20:29rotations, his best Combos and once he got it figured out,
- 20:34right? That's when the run from January
- 20:38to March happened in, obviously, when you're bringing in, what
- 20:43five and you guys, 16. You guys, yeah, even a couple of
- 20:47them who are very highly, touted freshman.
- 20:50You've got to figure out what they're going to do.
- 20:52Now, what's going to help everybody if this can happen is,
- 20:59you know, we're waiting on Justin months.
- 21:01Yep. Know if Justin much comes back.
- 21:07I will feel a hell of a lot better about this team early
- 21:11then later in the season. Yeah, because you're talking
- 21:14about a it's not just Couture being the kind of the big leader
- 21:20on the floor out the gate. And when we talked about
- 21:24starting lineups, that might be the difference between having
- 21:27Couture's, the starter is, you know, is much coming back.
- 21:30If months doesn't come back, must does come back.
- 21:33I should say you have less of a need to Have Couture is your
- 21:38starter on the floor because he is going to be the de facto
- 21:42leader in that group, if mutts isn't coming back, but what's
- 21:45coming back? It gives you more flexibility
- 21:47with your lineup. If Candice little bit further
- 21:50along you, don't necessarily need that leader on the floor in
- 21:52that starting unit out the gate. So abso-freakin'-lutely that's
- 21:57going to be, that's going to be. I think the interesting point is
- 21:59that if blood cells come back, I think that that would be a big
- 22:04big boost for that team because again, you get more matchup
- 22:10flexibility there and lineup flexibility.
- 22:12Well, that's a lot of flexibility, probably.
- 22:16Yeah, the line of flexibility is the big key on that, the sun is
- 22:20to the portal. I think, with the pickup or
- 22:23Poteet yesterday, I think the song is probably not going to
- 22:25come back. That's just my field.
- 22:28Um, and then, you know, keep got invited to the G, we really try
- 22:33out which is, you know, good for him.
- 22:36He does. He he stayed around an extra
- 22:38season where last year, he didn't get any invites.
- 22:41He's worked his way up to the G League tryouts.
- 22:44Definitely, I think he has a chance maybe to eventually make
- 22:48a roster. If not, I think he voloom is
- 22:50going to go overseas and make a lot of money playing Euro league
- 22:55basketball. Yeah, yeah, it's good for him.
- 22:58Yeah, I mean he's a solid player, you know, has a lot of
- 23:04Versatility in his game able to step back and take the three can
- 23:10do a lot of things in the post down low.
- 23:11So hopefully, you can catch on somewhere and make it happen.
- 23:17Abso-freakin'-lutely. All right, Brian baseball,
- 23:20basketball softball. We talked to money, dude.
- 23:25If I told you three weeks ago that today June 11th, 2022, that
- 23:33the Hokies would be ranked 21st and to 47s recruiting rankings.
- 23:38What would you have said to me out of said, you're full of
- 23:41shit. And that would have been like
- 23:46I'm probably in Polish it because I don't sound right.
- 23:48But you know guys if y'all been paying attention, what a
- 23:52whirlwind getting six recruits in three weeks and man they are
- 23:58from all over the place. And let's start with the first
- 24:01guy that committed not long after not long after the spring
- 24:07game from right here in the RV, a just down the street from me.
- 24:12Jason Abby from Truman High School 64, 215 Edge player,
- 24:20ranked as an 84 by 247 Sports. You know, this kid had somebody
- 24:29come with a salt with the freemen coach not long after
- 24:32this happened, this kid just started playing football.
- 24:36And he's picking up this much momentum.
- 24:40I mean, were you able to even find any tape on him?
- 24:43Is there anything out there because he's just played a
- 24:45couple years? And I mean last year would have
- 24:47been his junior year. There's some out there but
- 24:51there's not a ton. I mean he is a he's a tall lean
- 24:56type of defensive end Edge presents.
- 25:01You think probably in terms of build similar to To a bar.
- 25:06No is right now. 64 215. Probably going to need some,
- 25:12some weight to be able to work into a 2d parole in this
- 25:17defense. But, you know, it's one of those
- 25:20things where out the gate, when you try to build build rosters
- 25:24like this and fill in some spots, you know, if you can't,
- 25:30you know, recruit top in Talent recruit guys that have good size
- 25:34and have good speed and he's got some good speed.
- 25:38Absolutely, you know, super long wingspan.
- 25:41Did the athleticism show on the tape that you saw?
- 25:44Yeah, yeah, I mean, it definitely pops.
- 25:46You can tell he's an athlete. Awesome.
- 25:49You know so you get one, you stay in state, you get kind of
- 25:53under the radar guy, from a school, not known to put out a
- 25:56lot of big products but from the way it looked they hid Deep Run.
- 26:02They had Godwin. I'm assuming they probably
- 26:05stopped by Freeman at some of those blitzes and hey, let me
- 26:09let's see this kid like that kid that kid.
- 26:13Yeah, here's an offer. It made the little param circle
- 26:17there. Exactly.
- 26:20All right. So they weren't done in the
- 26:23state of Virginia. Yet they go right in the back
- 26:26door and they actually get a kid who came over from Europe from
- 26:31Germany. Now, there's some jokes out
- 26:34there about German offensive lineman's but with the name like
- 26:37Hans Zimmer. Yeah.
- 26:39Six six and a half and 275 pounds, he was not rated by 24.
- 26:457, when, you know when when everything was coming down they
- 26:50got ahold of this tape, they already put it in the top 20 in
- 26:53Virginia and already gave an 87. You get to see some of his stuff
- 26:58yet because I know they're he's in a private school down at
- 27:02North Cross which is a private school down, in Roanoke.
- 27:05Yeah, I watched some of that. I mean, he looks like a guy that
- 27:09is kind of that. Classic underrated Wisconsin
- 27:15Style. An offensive lineman.
- 27:18You see? Why Rudolph would have targeted
- 27:21a player like him. I think you still a little raw
- 27:25but I think he's got good size and he's showing some promise
- 27:30out the gate. And I think Rudolph just needs
- 27:33to buff out the edges there and he's going to be a solid pick
- 27:36up. All right.
- 27:38Can I say something that I remember texting you?
- 27:40Or we talked about this over the phone when he committed I think
- 27:44the 66 is legit. I do.
- 27:47I do think that. I think that's why Joe Rudolph
- 27:49pulled the trigger on. And I think he went and saw this
- 27:51kid in person known in Roanoke. In, like legitimately, like he's
- 27:55legitimately six-foot-six. He legitimately 275 pounds.
- 27:59I can work with this. Yep.
- 28:03And, you know, again, it's an in-state pick up, it's out of
- 28:08the country. That's one of those weird back
- 28:11and forth things, but When you see that happen, where God
- 28:16doesn't get ranked and he gets put just at an 87.
- 28:21What does that tell you these analysts are seeing when they
- 28:24look at him. Well, it's tells you that Number
- 28:30one, he's probably been under offered based on what they're
- 28:33seeing and based on some of the buzz that's coming out recently
- 28:38regarding that player. You know, it's not just okay.
- 28:42Well, he committed to Tech, he's got at least be an 85, right?
- 28:46Or something like that. Yeah, you know there's some
- 28:49other things that go into a bump like that.
- 28:53Yeah. Usually, you know a guy commits
- 28:55to a power file. That doesn't have any power 5
- 28:57offers. That's like a de facto 84.
- 29:01Yeah, 85. Yeah.
- 29:03You don't bump a guy 287 off that so they're definitely
- 29:07seeing something else and you mentioned the 66 so 24/7 has him
- 29:11six six and a half. The fact that they added the
- 29:16half tells me that, he's at least a full 66 because you
- 29:19don't throat, if he was trying to bullshit, he would have
- 29:22thrown it to 67. If you bullshittin, he would
- 29:26have, would have been bigger than that.
- 29:29So it's pretty awesome to hear that.
- 29:31All right, this is an offensive lineman podcast.
- 29:35We've always made that point clear.
- 29:38They pick up another commitment from an offensive lineman
- 29:43Gabriel Arena. You listed 65 to 85 Bishop
- 29:48McDevitt. Whoo whooping, Harrisburg
- 29:52Pennsylvania, we know Brent prize, love for Harrisburg.
- 29:55Bishop McDevitt is a private Catholic School up there with a
- 30:00pretty good football reputation and if you're wondering why I'm
- 30:03saying pretty good football reputation, Katie McCoy went to
- 30:07the school, Noah Spence. Noah Spence was a huge recruit
- 30:12back, a few years ago, LaRon McCoy went to the school.
- 30:17So this is one of those they're going to put out.
- 30:21Players and it doesn't take every 20 years.
- 30:25Yep. Offers from both green and
- 30:28places like that. What did the Gabriel Arena take
- 30:32tell you, you know, 85 3 star about 24/7?
- 30:36Yeah, I mean again another guy with pretty good size, a little
- 30:40raw, but the thing that jumped off for me, is this one's got a
- 30:44motor and he's got a nasty streak and I think that's,
- 30:48that's going to be good for this offensive line.
- 30:51And again, this is this is kind of another guy that is very much
- 30:55in the Rudolph. Rudolph footprint there.
- 30:58Right now, this is the type of player that he that he tends to
- 31:03recruit. He's found some a bunch of
- 31:05Diamonds in the Rough and develop them into NFL Talent.
- 31:09So hopefully Arenas another one of them.
- 31:12And when we look at Bishop McDevitt, you get Arena.
- 31:17But I know we're also taking a look at their running back to
- 31:20Marquis. Um, so there's there's some
- 31:22other talent. I think we're looking at from
- 31:25me, give it that could potentially come into play down
- 31:28the road in this class as well. So, yeah, and a lot of what's
- 31:32going on right now is the the setups to get in line for no
- 31:38other players. And it's being discussed all
- 31:41over Twitter and group chats, and things were part of When you
- 31:47take someone from Bishop when you start, trying to get your
- 31:49inroads and keep, you know, underrated local kids at home,
- 31:54it's kind of big. And you know, you talk about
- 31:58Brian, what was the name? Don't let Marcus Williams.
- 32:01Yeah, yeah, I mean it's a setup. Marquis Williams is a top-five
- 32:06player in the state of Pennsylvania.
- 32:08He's a top 24/7 player. Every move.
- 32:13It's we're not. We're in an era where not in
- 32:16there. We're with the staff that
- 32:18understands to get to Point C. You need to start working
- 32:23through A and B. You can't just jump to see all
- 32:26of a sudden so it's you know I know we talked about it a little
- 32:30bit you know. Jason Abby is the anomaly here.
- 32:34What we're seeing with a lot of these recruits that we've gotten
- 32:38even though they're not necessarily High three or four
- 32:40star players there from schools that have a rich history of
- 32:45putting out Collegiate and NFL Talent.
- 32:50In the next one that committed exact same way.
- 32:55Dante love it and DeMatha. Yep.
- 32:59If you basically Collegiate basketball Collegiate football,
- 33:03DeMatha puts out a ton of each. He is 3 star 87, but the way
- 33:12they were talking about him as he was leading up to, he's one
- 33:17of these kids that could take a massive.
- 33:20Of massive jump in his senior season.
- 33:24Yeah, big jump could be coming for him really talented.
- 33:27I think he might end up at safety, but I think he could
- 33:30play Corner as well. If we were rating and probably
- 33:34as a safety, he'd be higher out the gate, okay?
- 33:39That that's my opinion. I think he'd have a higher
- 33:41rating if you rating him just as a safety.
- 33:45But yeah, I think he definitely could be in line for a bump.
- 33:47I think he's one of the guys that he's gotten some look but I
- 33:52think with a good senior season, he can really get a bump and
- 33:55probably be either. He definitely going to be in
- 33:57that high three-star range could be in the forest our range.
- 34:01Yeah, and taking a look into math with the top 12 including
- 34:05Dante, love it. They have two more.
- 34:06They have D top player in the state of Maryland, and they've
- 34:09got the number 9 player in the state of Maryland.
- 34:12Also something to keep an eye on as well.
- 34:15Saint Frances Academy who prowls able to hold onto two of our
- 34:18better recruits last year. Also has a guy in the top five
- 34:23for defensive line. So you know and then another guy
- 34:26in the top 15. So just continue to keep
- 34:29thinking about that. You know, love is 61 185 If he
- 34:33if that's his true size He doesn't really have to come in
- 34:38and do too much weight gain to play.
- 34:41Especially they started at corner initially thought.
- 34:43Yeah, a little bit of weight game that you can play
- 34:46undersized safety feature. You know, we're not talking
- 34:51about is we're not talking about a big amount either.
- 34:53No, not a big amount either. All right.
- 34:56So, you know, we were sitting here last night, please, I was,
- 35:02you know, all of a sudden, Brent try brim Pride drops his signal,
- 35:07And everybody's like, who is it, who was it, who was it, who is
- 35:11this? And a guy I think a lot of
- 35:14people have been expecting to commit to Virginia Tech at some
- 35:18point this spring summer it has Marcel Baylor, sticks 3195 out
- 35:23of Radford High School three-story, six.
- 35:30Keep the local guys who have development potential, keep them
- 35:33keep them their state got development potential.
- 35:37I think there's some real upside with him.
- 35:39He's already got a good build coming out of high school.
- 35:44We showed him a lot of love you know.
- 35:46The videos are out there of him arriving on campus and the love.
- 35:52That was there was shown out for him and I think you know, we
- 35:56were talking about early on we thought he might be one of the
- 35:58first ones to jump in the boat crew you know, with how far
- 36:02along we he was Early in the process.
- 36:07I'm glad to see that we close the deal there at least in terms
- 36:11of the verbal commitment there. So yeah, let's keep it moving
- 36:16because we still had one more you do.
- 36:18Had one more home Baylor though and back on love it.
- 36:22Love its primary. Recruiter was Derrick Jones
- 36:26secondary was piercing Prelude Marcel's primary was piercing so
- 36:31for Pearson and I know he definitely has a great
- 36:33relationship with Radford High School coaching there for a few
- 36:36years but to get piercings feet wet, get him a couple wins early
- 36:40with a guy with his personality, his football knowledge, a big
- 36:43old ring to walk in actually a lot of rings because the time he
- 36:46played here plus the Super Bowl and all those years spend the
- 36:49NFL he has something to walk around with puts Ron's point.
- 36:54We were not done 4 p.m. today. A quarterback from a Georgia
- 37:02Power House. Yep.
- 37:04Rob said Dylan, witek it, I'm pronouncing his name wrong.
- 37:08Sorry, 3 star out of Buford High School who were state champs
- 37:14last year. You know, they talk about
- 37:18multi-sport athlete. Runs track, plays, baseball
- 37:22clock, that of 45 at the Elite 11 back in 2022. 37-inch 4.31.
- 37:29In short, vertical, T back in 21 when he was the backup won a
- 37:35State title. This guys coming from a pet of
- 37:38be program and he's athletic as hell.
- 37:41Yeah. Where it is, he can swing the
- 37:44ball a little bit to definitely unpolished.
- 37:48I think a little bit in that area but has the cannon to get
- 37:53the ball down the field and can make all the throws that you
- 37:57wanted to make. I don't think he's as much of a
- 38:00project as a couple of the other quarterbacks that we've seen
- 38:03lately. You know, that have sitting
- 38:06there similar athletic traits Big Arm, I think he's a little
- 38:12bit more game ready? And I think he matches what
- 38:18we're trying to do on offense. May be a little better than some
- 38:20of the guys didn't come through in the past who weren't
- 38:22necessarily good scheme fits even though they had some
- 38:26physical tools. It's very true and you talked
- 38:29about kind of being game ready, even in a backup role last year,
- 38:32he got a chance to play as their change of pace back.
- 38:36As what they listed here is his background, he can bleed it over
- 38:4060% of his passes for close to six hundred fifty yards and
- 38:43seven touchdowns. That's pretty good for a backup
- 38:47you know usually you're hoping if you got a change of pace guy
- 38:50just when you throw 50 percent can you just get 50%?
- 38:54Don't don't fuck it up. Get some good runs hand the ball
- 38:57off. So it's it's pretty awesome that
- 39:03you know, it's in we're in the top 20.
- 39:06You know we've already said it top 35, or better this year and
- 39:10sort of a rebuild would be great to get this kind of momentum
- 39:14going in May because we're three weeks out from one camp start.
- 39:19Yep. If the me if we can get one more
- 39:22between now and that first camp in June, you're talking about
- 39:25going in with eight guys. And that would be a big momentum
- 39:30because then you're going to get probably some Elite Talent
- 39:32coming in, and the coaches, to be able to make the cell.
- 39:37Yeah, bunch of official visits are paying for those camps in
- 39:41June, as well surrounding those camps.
- 39:43So I think that's going to be big for a lot of these players,
- 39:48getting them in, give them on campus, some of the ones that
- 39:52we're waiting to pull the trigger on, seeing what they can
- 39:53do in these drills against Maybe potentially bigger stronger
- 40:00talent. I think that's going to be big
- 40:03for them. And yeah, like I said, it could
- 40:06be a really June, could be a really big month after, you
- 40:11know, we kind of kicked off may pretty good as well.
- 40:13So, you know, I like I said we're not expecting.
- 40:18You know, big big moves this year?
- 40:22I think, I think, right now it's this is a fill the roster where
- 40:26you need to fill the roster. Yep, with solid Talent.
- 40:31Go out, develop them, and win some games in 22, and then, then
- 40:36you got something to sell on the road.
- 40:39For next year. Yeah, that's that's the big key.
- 40:43It's do I expect maybe us to get one or two four stars this
- 40:47cycle? Yeah, one or two.
- 40:49I think we're going to pick off. I think we've got enough good
- 40:52Recruiters in the building. Do I expect it to be 8 or 9.
- 40:58Unless you know unless something crazy happened and we're sitting
- 41:01here in November saying, hey we're seven and one.
- 41:05Are you bleep? Kidding me?
- 41:06Like that's when you can flip that on to having a really good
- 41:09season but I wanted to discuss one other thing.
- 41:13Braun Brent pry from day. One has been preaching.
- 41:17The six hour radius, the six hour radius, the 6:00 hour
- 41:20radius Dylan would a key is the farthest player from his
- 41:27hometown to Blacksburg. You don't know how long that
- 41:31drive is. Tell me, man, five hours, 55
- 41:36minutes, these are saved it. As you've got, you know, a be
- 41:47here in Richmond, three hours, you got, Lance Williams and
- 41:50Alco. It's about a four and a half
- 41:52hour drive Hammers and Rona. That's right there.
- 41:55Baylor's in Radford right there. Reena in Harrisonburg what?
- 42:001/2 hours the math about for. He said that was his plan and he
- 42:05has stuck to with us far. Yep.
- 42:09And I like that where we're not ignoring the state's next to us
- 42:16in either direction. This this isn't just You know
- 42:21what? Let's touch the schools in the
- 42:23states. We've had a history with.
- 42:25Yeah, we're doing that but we're tapping into some areas in that
- 42:29footprint that we haven't historically been doing well at
- 42:34particularly Pennsylvania we've already done.
- 42:36What done some somewhat? Well, there we got.
- 42:39A DeMatha kid in a battle against Maryland.
- 42:42We beat Maryland for kid in their backyard.
- 42:45You always, you always talk about it.
- 42:48Those are the winds, we Need to take 80% of the time.
- 42:51Yep. Take those 80% of the time you
- 42:54start doing that and getting players like, a kid of love.
- 42:57It's caliber, who is an 87? Who's to me?
- 43:00That's a higher three. That's not a high high 3 and 88
- 43:04or 89, but that's a higher through.
- 43:06It's more than a mid three to me.
- 43:08But you beating Maryland form. Now the next couple like you
- 43:13always talk about if we have to go against NC State for a kid
- 43:16for like trying to throw another name out.
- 43:19Or South Carolina. And I mean I mean even wake at
- 43:22this point. Yeah.
- 43:24Go win those four out of five times.
- 43:27Yeah. When the battles that you can
- 43:29win, you know, you're not going to always, I mean, even in the
- 43:32regional footprint, you're not always going to be UNC your Penn
- 43:35State, but you need to pretty much all the time.
- 43:39Beat NC State beat dude, beat. Wait feet Maryland.
- 43:43True, very true, beat, it beat Kentucky.
- 43:46You can tuck in Tuck you if you Kentucky's in play for somebody.
- 43:49Be in lieu of them places like that.
- 43:51That's the one. You gotta win 80% of the time.
- 43:54Alright, Braun, before we start looking at the portal and some
- 43:58other things, we are going to take a quick pause for a message
- 44:02from our digital partners because we take a quick break.
- 44:05We like to tell you about getting your free website report
- 44:07from our digital partner, Grassroots, digital marketing

- 44:11website ranks on Google on-site, SEO and social media.
- 44:15No commitment to buy anything, you can get your free report by
- 44:18visiting. Grassroots, All studio.com
- 44:21forward slash free, Dash website, Dash report.
- 44:24Now, back to the episode. Paris, Brian, let's take a look
- 44:29at the portal because since we last talked, we didn't get into
- 44:34the portal that week because we were talking about the spring
- 44:37game, a couple guys. We already know Gordon Bronson
- 44:41Kong ties. Gary gone.
- 44:42We didn't mention it last time. Oversight Jared.
- 44:45Gible got in the portal tight end but since then man, it's
- 44:49been a flood. Yep.
- 44:51Marco lie in the portal, already committed to South Alabama, glad
- 44:55he found a place to play defensive back to Sean Elder.
- 45:00Walk on Jabari Parker out of Highland Springs, Bryce
- 45:04Governor, which I think that's going to be a big talking points
- 45:07here. Jalen Hampton.
- 45:09And the deer Thompson and I'm is DJ Simms, is he in?
- 45:14Or is he out? I thought he was back in, not
- 45:19now. Sorry back in as in part of the
- 45:22roster, I'd building and put himself in and then took himself
- 45:25out of the portal really quick, maybe it was the wrong name.
- 45:30But, you know, best of luck to all those guys.
- 45:33First of all, I hope they all land, somewhere able to compete.
- 45:37Play the game. They love get their education
- 45:39completed, but I think the one of this list, Brian, we started
- 45:44talking about You like the good new tape last year?
- 45:49You thought he'd do good and heard some things like he was
- 45:54working with second team, then all of a sudden he's flipped the
- 45:57defensive line. Yep, and the next thing, you
- 46:02know, a few weeks later, he's out in the portal and then he's
- 46:05already committed to UT Chattanooga.
- 46:09So little shocked little bit little bit and I think what I'm
- 46:16going to assume in this situation is that given the lack
- 46:22of depth that we were looking at when we were recruiting rice, he
- 46:29came in thinking he was going to get some early playing time by
- 46:32this year. And I think between a
- 46:36combination of switching schemes and it not being as good of a
- 46:40fit. Also looking at where he was on
- 46:45the depth chart with some other new guys, could there that are
- 46:47coming into the program, he wasn't in the two deep anymore
- 46:52as we were moving through. Spraying Flip to the defensive
- 46:57side looked like he wasn't going to be in the 3D on that side of
- 47:00the ball and decided let me see what's out there in the program.
- 47:04Yeah and he did and he went down to an FCS program and UT
- 47:08Chattanooga I believe is a decent program and it will
- 47:10Healey coach there for a few years, but you do there.
- 47:16But but let's just be honest, first of all, I'm glad he landed
- 47:21somewhere, but it also shows you, what we're looking for is
- 47:24going to be a little bit different because you kind of
- 47:26talked about him. You like him in that zone
- 47:28scheme, that we were in previously, but well, one room
- 47:32that got cleared up between, Bronson, Lee, Geary and Hampton
- 47:36running back. Rooms is now at seven.
- 47:39Where did a good number? We know Jalen wholesome is gone.
- 47:42Next year, were you are you shocked?
- 47:46But still glad Kenji. Christian has not entered the
- 47:49portal yet. I am because based on what I was
- 47:52hearing, it sounded like he was potentially in the doghouse.
- 47:57I'm glad that either that's not the case or that whatever was
- 48:02going on with that has been cleared up to a point where he
- 48:05feels comfortable saying in the staff feels comfortable with
- 48:08him. You know, move Lord, you know,
- 48:11whatever the situation, I don't want to speculate on something
- 48:14that I don't have 100% knowledge on.
- 48:16So but I think like I said, he's got he's got good town and I
- 48:21think between the tackles he can be that type of player for us in
- 48:24this game. Yeah.
- 48:28Hopefully I don't know if this year's going to be that time for
- 48:31him but hopefully by next year when holsten's out he can slip
- 48:35into that type of role in this offense.
- 48:39You know, I think, I think that we're already kind of found our,
- 48:43our all-purpose guy with Thomas, he can be the between the tackle
- 48:48specials and let guys like King and chance black be kind of that
- 48:53that more Gadget type player in the offense.
- 48:56All right, if a few months ago, I gave you a number of nine and
- 48:59a half. Would you have said over under?
- 49:01How many guys we have on the board out of said probably over?
- 49:05At this point we're in eighth. Um which right now we have one
- 49:13scholarship to give out to someone in the portal.
- 49:17But do you think this says a lot more about potentially burnt on
- 49:21the culture? Using still in here?
- 49:23That he's obviously he had some hard conversation to guys
- 49:29because guys have we have a number of guys that have left
- 49:33But it's not mass Exodus. I think we expected.
- 49:37It's not, I mean, we had the discussions, he had to have,
- 49:40which is, we can't have 10 scholarship, running backs.
- 49:45So we've had that discussion. That's been, that's been settled
- 49:49at least to a point, but it sounds like he had those tough
- 49:53discussions, but it also sounds like we've got some pretty good
- 49:58buy-in by these, these players that were already on the Roster.
- 50:04You know whether that ends up being a good thing, long term,
- 50:07we'll have to see, but the fact that he's been able to come in,
- 50:11sell his vision on what he sees and guys want to be a part of
- 50:17that, even if they're not necessarily in the 2D heading
- 50:19into fall says a lot about. I think the process that we're
- 50:23going through right now you say process.
- 50:26I did you said process so process Well, the other thing
- 50:33you kind of got to wonder and it's just a rumor floating
- 50:35around with the NCAA slower. Frickin molasses in it.
- 50:38Frickin wintertime is that that rumor of the potential extra
- 50:43scholarship somewhere between three and five for 2022.
- 50:48If that happens. Where we're at now spine as if
- 50:53you don't respond extra, even three extra.
- 50:55That's perfect, right? Curtis, is this the the part of
- 50:59the program where we're going to trash?
- 51:01The NCAA for about a good 20 to 30 minutes?
- 51:04Um, that probably 20 10 to 12. Maybe 15.
- 51:09Okay, let's do 15, let's do 50. All right first off.
- 51:12Fuck the NCAA rule well I mean okay, so number one, number one,
- 51:19Been dragging your feet on whether or not you're going to
- 51:22allow some extra scholarships from this year, after letting
- 51:26everyone play last year on. Oh yeah, without you.
- 51:29So, again, this is information that should have been dulled out
- 51:35before, May shit should have been built for March, but it
- 51:41should have a, but absolutely should have been dulled out
- 51:43before the deadline for players to get into the portal to be
- 51:48able to play. Next year, true.
- 51:51We're already past that we're 11 days, past that.
- 51:54So no longer is that even a thing to think about, but You
- 52:03know, we also have the scholarship because last year
- 52:08was like, everyone can play in. We said on here.
- 52:12Okay, that's great for this year.
- 52:14How are you going to get that under control next year?
- 52:17And you would think they would have came out pretty quick and
- 52:19said, because the logical thing is, you don't go from having
- 52:23what 100 players 95 to 100 players on scholarship.
- 52:28To getting back down to 85. The thought process is
- 52:31graduated, if you're going to have, don't go.
- 52:34Even if you only do it one year, just give some flexibility but
- 52:39no Curtis like always the NCAA things.
- 52:41Problems are going to take care of themselves.
- 52:44You mean like the ni L? Yeah I do mean like the Nao, the
- 52:50NCAA things problems are going to take care of themselves.
- 52:53They don't and then they just slap Dash some shit out there
- 52:57and Hope that things go the way they want to, which it never
- 53:00does. So you get situations like this
- 53:03with the scholarships where we're we're late and we don't
- 53:07know, and no one knows and people are playing their cards
- 53:09close to the vest because they're unsure.
- 53:12And then you get situations like the ni L where you've got Jordan
- 53:16Addison entering the, the portal based off a potential huge ni L
- 53:24deal with USC, we million bucks, he's making more than pick.
- 53:27Is in the NFL. Yeah it's wow.
- 53:31And I'm going to I'm going to preface everything before I get
- 53:34into this situation with I 100% still support in il, in theory,
- 53:43the way it was talked about. I also and under the current
- 53:46rules support, the players going out there and getting theirs
- 53:50because all they're doing is essentially playing by the rules
- 53:54that everyone else is playing, but there's a go get yours.
- 53:57Do what you need to do. That being said, when everyone
- 54:03was talking about ni L, what they were more or less talking
- 54:08about is remember that shit Johnny Manziel got in trouble
- 54:12for. Yeah, that would have been
- 54:15legal, that would have been allowed.
- 54:18That would not have been sanctioned.
- 54:21It was never supposed to be in theory, a recruiting tool.
- 54:25It was supposed to be. Once you've been recruited,
- 54:28you're in college, you can use your name image and likeness to
- 54:31make money based off your abilities once you've been
- 54:35recruited. The problem is that the NCAA saw
- 54:41this coming to fold over five years, over five years and sat
- 54:49on their damn hands and then let it get to a point where states
- 54:54were passing laws and they were out of they were they no longer
- 54:58had control of it. So once they no longer had
- 55:01control, they slapdash some dumb shit together and said, here's
- 55:05the policy. And no one knows what really is
- 55:09and is not legal within this framework right now.
- 55:12And really no one gives a shit because the NCAA is to us their
- 55:15Toothless. And right now, it's basically
- 55:18the Wild Wild West. They can come down with any sort
- 55:21of stuff and I know they're claiming they're trying to
- 55:23figure it out and get some rules in place.
- 55:26How can you punish someone based on what we're doing?
- 55:29Will do you can't do this and you guys did this you didn't
- 55:33tell us we couldn't do this until after we had already did
- 55:36this? Clarification, eight months
- 55:39later in doing shit, jack shit. So, should there have been
- 55:44something? Yeah, we've been talking about
- 55:46it. Like legitimately in il deal,
- 55:48shouldn't have been able to be into place or a offer made until
- 55:53you are signed with a school. Yeah, you have to be enrolled in
- 55:58these School fully signed on scholarship to have the
- 56:01opportunity for an ni L deal. Not this.
- 56:04What the hell is going on at USC trying?
- 56:06To get Jordan. Addison.
- 56:08Hey hey, three million dollars, come here and play for us.
- 56:12Okay. And like and like I said, I'm
- 56:14not necessarily begrudging. The folks that are taking
- 56:16advantage of these situations there.
- 56:18They're just doing what the NCAA has allowed them to do exactly
- 56:22when you're like with, when a kid, when a kid habitually does
- 56:27does something wrong, you don't necessarily look at the kid and
- 56:29say, okay well do you know the kids bad?
- 56:31Well, if if they haven't had a parameter of which They know
- 56:37this is acceptable behavior in. This is not.
- 56:39I mean, they're going to take advantage of that.
- 56:40I have no problem with you, taking advantage of the rules
- 56:44that are there. But at some point, the NCAA
- 56:48didn't think. All right, well if we're going
- 56:52to move forward with this, how can we move forward with this in
- 56:54a way that is not only Equitable for the players, which is the
- 56:58most important part of this. But also keeps the spirit of the
- 57:04intent of the level Level Playing Field as much as can be
- 57:08in the college game exactly. In will I think it will be?
- 57:13Will it be self-corrected in the next two to three years?
- 57:16Yeah. Yeah, but you're going to swing
- 57:17to a point to a point. It will be because it's like I
- 57:20know you made the point earlier at some point.
- 57:22It's not going to be worth for those boosters to drop three
- 57:25million dollars on every good player.
- 57:28No, because you're going to have your have enough bust where
- 57:31their investment is not returned, you know, it's our a
- 57:34lot its return on investment if you don't or return on Equity,
- 57:38whatever you want to call it. If you're out here and you're a
- 57:41big booster and you know, your work, you know, eighty hundred
- 57:44million dollars. Rich people do not like to lose
- 57:49money. So if you're this guy given n IL
- 57:52deals, 10 million a year in, these kids aren't worth a shit
- 57:56playing eventually, you're going to look at the school and the ni
- 58:01L program be like fuck y'all. I'm not giving you any more
- 58:04money. Wow, it's been five years.
- 58:06I've wasted 50 million dollars. We got two good players out of
- 58:09it. Why does he need you?
- 58:12Yeah. But I'll tell you where the
- 58:14problem is going to come though and it's already.
- 58:16Already seeing it mostly with the Jordan Addison situation.
- 58:19It's yeah. School was like pit or schools
- 58:22like Virginia. Tech that develop a talent, they
- 58:25show out and then a big dog comes in there and can throw 3
- 58:29million at them for two years. Yeah, and reap the benefits.
- 58:35They don't have to worry about as much of that unknown factor
- 58:38as you will with a high school athlete.
- 58:41Yeah, they might be five stars but even the hit rate on five
- 58:43stars isn't using a little proof, right?
- 58:46No. So so at that point, you know?
- 58:51Yeah, 55 most five stars are still probably going to get some
- 58:53money thrown at them but you're not going to see a ton of four
- 58:55stars. Get good big deals like that.
- 58:58What you will see is the high three and four-star.
- 59:01Go to a school like pit or like Virginia Tech or like NC State
- 59:05and play for two to three years. And now, all of a sudden their
- 59:08star is rising. And you'll see those big schools
- 59:12like your bamas, your USC's, your Oklahoma's, Come ashore and
- 59:18they'll have a booster drop a meal or two meals out there and
- 59:20say hey come play for us for a year or two.
- 59:24Now the bigger, but the bigger but that's a risk reward, right?
- 59:27A million dollars is a lot of money, half billion dollars a
- 59:29lot of money. Yeah.
- 59:31But the risk reward on that for that player is you're going to a
- 59:36whole new school all different culture on potentially whole
- 59:41different system. You.
- 59:43And if you're one of those guys who are that highly ranked where
- 59:46it's like, dude you're going to go in the first four rounds of
- 59:49the draft so you're probably going to have a few million
- 59:52dollars, guaranteed to you regardless.
- 59:54Yep. Do you go to a school?
- 59:58Take the ni L deal but what if it just absolutely cripples your
- 1:00:01stop? It's a huge risk reward so
- 1:00:06what's going to happen in that case?
- 1:00:08Yep. Alabama comes and steals a tight
- 1:00:11end from Virginia Tech who was showing out right.
- 1:00:14He goes to Alabama, does nothing.
- 1:00:16Instead of getting drafted, he's sitting on the end of the line,
- 1:00:19undrafted free agent, barely on barely on a practice squad.
- 1:00:25But in go see million dollars in the bank.
- 1:00:27To that's the piece though, if you were going to be a top, 100
- 1:00:33Prospect, what's 2 million dollars?
- 1:00:37It's marginal, right? I get that.
- 1:00:39I get that. But money in my pocket today is
- 1:00:43better than money in my pocket in two years.
- 1:00:47Well, what's gonna happen? I'm just trying to tell you that
- 1:00:49that's how a lot of players are going to see it.
- 1:00:51But what I'm saying is there's also going to be stories and
- 1:00:54there's going to be where other coaches such as the smaller
- 1:00:58schools are going to be able to say who you can go do that.
- 1:01:01I understand, take the money. Don't forget what happened to
- 1:01:03these three guys. In the kids, got to sit there
- 1:01:06and be like well shit like cuz they're still going to be
- 1:01:09chances to make what six figures potentially in schools.
- 1:01:13Like pit Virginia Tech. NC State, really good players.
- 1:01:18Could at the upside of that could potentially make something
- 1:01:21like that especially over the course of their entire career.
- 1:01:25Yeah so it's a cluster F. Hopefully in some way it gets
- 1:01:30Resort about the NCAA we could possibly be 50 years old when
- 1:01:35that happens so that just gives you their timeline.
- 1:01:39Yeah, the n-c-double-a saw the Jordan Addison situation.
- 1:01:43They were like maybe we should send out some clarifying
- 1:01:46documentation that, that'll settle things down.
- 1:01:49That that's what's needed right now is some clarification
- 1:01:52clarifying documentation of what the rules actually are.
- 1:01:56Obviously, everyone's abiding by them, they're morons.
- 1:02:01And I mean, what the NCAA, what's it going to take to
- 1:02:05control some like this is, you got to have a powerhead figure
- 1:02:08who will lay hammers down on people.
- 1:02:10And there's only a few other in have the respect of the
- 1:02:13Collegiate Community to do it. Well, in my opinion, uh, coach
- 1:02:17little times, let me say to me the NCAA commissioner, we need
- 1:02:21to have a commissioner. and, a governing body that Is supported
- 1:02:31by the conferences and we don't have that right now the Congress
- 1:02:34has had zero zero faith in what the NCAA is trying to do as a
- 1:02:39governing body to the point where they're pretty much trying
- 1:02:42to do it on their own. The problem is that under the
- 1:02:46current rules and the way things are trending, I'm not sure that
- 1:02:51that's a good thing for college football.
- 1:02:53If you like college football, more or less in its current
- 1:02:56format, well, I like college football better from 20 years.
- 1:03:00You go but that's just me. Yeah like I said y'all know me
- 1:03:05I'm not an old hair that's out there saying all right screw
- 1:03:08those players. The scholarship is enough.
- 1:03:10Oh no screw those players. If you transfer you got to sit
- 1:03:13out a year. You know I've been as Pro Player
- 1:03:17as most people can be and you brought me to your side as most
- 1:03:21people can be. I am Pro Player movement.
- 1:03:23I am Pro Player, being able to get money based on their
- 1:03:27abilities. But that's not, there's a
- 1:03:30discipline that in what's going on right now which is more or
- 1:03:32less a pay-for-play situation that is exclusive to certain
- 1:03:37players because this isn't certain players.
- 1:03:41Hey, for playing for everyone, it's it's for if it's a
- 1:03:45recruiting tool and it's a tool to get people to transfer to
- 1:03:48your Universe, it's almost like there should just be a draft and
- 1:03:51we should have salaries. Someone proposed that a while
- 1:03:55back. I wonder.
- 1:03:56I wonder who did that? I don't know.
- 1:03:59Go check back 2020 folks when we again if they do move to that
- 1:04:03model the semi pro model, there needs to be a draft because
- 1:04:09you're all you're doing is you know, licensing.
- 1:04:14The Collegiate brand and image. Anyway exactly not necessarily
- 1:04:19officially a part of the University anymore.
- 1:04:21So you might as well have a draft right?
- 1:04:23Yeah. Only fair.
- 1:04:26Also only farewell in certain schools who always get 65 5
- 1:04:30Stars. They're sitting out there trying
- 1:04:32to get scraps, all that will never happen.
- 1:04:35They there's too many people in play that will never allow that
- 1:04:38to happen because they would be too much parity parity some
- 1:04:43conferences and some schools do not like well the NCAA better
- 1:04:47act sooner they're going to get it cut out of their own money
- 1:04:49making wagon you damn right by that in the quicker, the power 5
- 1:04:54gets that together. To be hilarious.
- 1:04:57All right, Brian, let's talk about this.
- 1:05:02This happened this week was first reported by Pete thamel.
- 1:05:08Basically a cc means going on this week and it's under
- 1:05:11discussion that divisions could be eliminated as early as 2020.
- 1:05:16Three reported later by David teal.
- 1:05:21One of the most popular models is a re-fixed and you play the
- 1:05:27other five teams rotating every year.
- 1:05:30What do you think of it? I'd prefer to and six, but I
- 1:05:36like this better than divisions. So, whatever we end up with is a
- 1:05:42better, a better good start than what we're doing now, aside from
- 1:05:48not wanting to play BC every year, which I'm hoping that one
- 1:05:51of the three is not be, see it. Lord, I hope not.
- 1:05:54I'm sick of BC. Yes, we will play them every
- 1:05:58other year, it's fine. Yeah, we'll still get up.
- 1:06:02They're to Chestnut Hill every four years they'll get down to
- 1:06:05Blacksburg every four years. That's good enough.
- 1:06:08Let's go, mom. Yeah, let's get.
- 1:06:10Give me UVA. Give me Miami and give me one of
- 1:06:14either. Georgia Tech or UNC if we're
- 1:06:17going. All right, I'm with you on the
- 1:06:20first two Eileen just, because you've got to kind of keep it
- 1:06:24balanced Eileen. Screw that go Louisville.
- 1:06:27Okay, I like, I like, Lois, but I've got no beef with
- 1:06:31Louisville, being being That third, well, my model I told
- 1:06:34Brian about this, the model I've got in my head is thinking
- 1:06:37geography and distances because to me, everybody needs one long
- 1:06:42travel like one travel, where you've got to go a long ass
- 1:06:46ways, that would be Miami for us.
- 1:06:48That would be us for Miami. West Virginia's, not joining,
- 1:06:52Robbie West. Virginia is not joining there in
- 1:06:55the Big 12. So like and then you have a
- 1:07:00medium somewhere between what the prop 6 hours for your fan
- 1:07:03base to drive. That's Louisville Louisville is
- 1:07:05roughly five and a half, six and a half hours from Blacksburg and
- 1:07:09then one short distance. Or a shorter distance as
- 1:07:12possible. So that's why I'd go Louisville
- 1:07:16over Carolina or gt. Just because it's going to be,
- 1:07:22you know, he is right at the border of that.
- 1:07:24Five to six. You put up there.
- 1:07:27Yeah. GTS ride.
- 1:07:28The board is about a seven and a half from Blacksburg.
- 1:07:31So it's still, it's still not a bad drive.
- 1:07:33You want to go down there for its A330 game.
- 1:07:36You leave at 6:00 in the morning from Blacksburg or from this
- 1:07:38area. You be down there by 1130
- 1:07:42tailgate few hours, go to the game, right?
- 1:07:45It's a reasonable drive. So that's kind of the what I'm
- 1:07:49seeing in. But the biggest thing about
- 1:07:51this, everybody wins, everybody wins.
- 1:07:55We as fans win, right? If we have been wins because we
- 1:07:59know every other year, we're going to play or every every two
- 1:08:04years we play everybody in conference.
- 1:08:07We play everybody in conference. That's awesome.
- 1:08:10You talk. Planning to go, you know maybe
- 1:08:13going to Clemson or FSU for a trip or an away game.
- 1:08:18You know when it's going to be. Yeah.
- 1:08:21And it's not like waiting six, seven years for that to happen.
- 1:08:26And it also me and brown we're looking at like everybody's been
- 1:08:29talking about with the Atlantic has been the dominant
- 1:08:31conference. Beginning of the ACC, the
- 1:08:35coastal look from roughly 2005 to 2011.
- 1:08:39The coastal had the To better teams movers occasions numerous
- 1:08:45occasions. Yep.
- 1:08:47So what we're looking at now in the last ten years it's been
- 1:08:50Clemson and Florida State while the coast has just been the
- 1:08:54wheel of Destiny. Yeah, we said it earlier.
- 1:08:57The Atlantic has had usually the two best teams in a given year,
- 1:09:03the coastal as usually had three, four and five, hmm.
- 1:09:07So the coast of might be a little, a little deeper.
- 1:09:11But they are more in the middle of the of the pack versus at the
- 1:09:15top end of the, of the cops. It's true.
- 1:09:17But the whole piece about this especially if you're looking at
- 1:09:20a playoff model it's getting larger you won't your two best
- 1:09:24teams on the stage at the end of the see if a team is 12 and 0
- 1:09:28and A team's 11 and 1, or even ten and two playing each other.
- 1:09:32If it's a good competitive game, you're likely going to get to
- 1:09:35him. Yep, that's why you're going to
- 1:09:37this model. And by all means if you do the
- 1:09:41Rolling, right? You won't Miami and VT or you
- 1:09:45want them to play. You take a look at the, you
- 1:09:47know, ten years ago. Saturday afternoons, pulling
- 1:09:50three and a half four million people as a 3:30 game.
- 1:09:54You want Florida State and Clemson play, you want the good
- 1:09:57teams to play each other because when it's the known Brands who
- 1:10:01are good and ranked people turn on their TVs to watch that game.
- 1:10:07So it's a win for fans, it's a win for players, because the
- 1:10:09players, if you stay there for years, you're going to play
- 1:10:13every team away in home. Yep, you're going to experience
- 1:10:19every atmosphere in the ACC, which is awesome.
- 1:10:25I'm with you I'm with you. I think it's going to be a bit
- 1:10:27of a good move for the ACC as a whole and I think getting rid of
- 1:10:31divisions is like you said, good for fans.
- 1:10:35Fans get to see the Hokies play teams that they sometimes wait
- 1:10:40for 56 years to play, which is asinine under the current
- 1:10:45format. Yeah, completely I'm going to do
- 1:10:49is, like seven years to play Syracuse.
- 1:10:52Yeah, it took us a while to play Syracuse, took us a while, to
- 1:10:56get in Sea State Louisville Louisville, yeah, probably shout
- 1:11:00out, John Earl, gummy X, NC State, and you complete each
- 1:11:04other since in the last 18 years.
- 1:11:08How many poor? They literally are 40 their,
- 1:11:13what 30 minutes from each other, they played four times in 14
- 1:11:16years. So we played West Virginia.
- 1:11:19Pretty much the same number of times.
- 1:11:20They played a down the street rival in the same conference
- 1:11:25more more. All right, let's roll on.
- 1:11:34Let's talk about the drafter real quick.
- 1:11:36Brian with the Hokies in the draft, the Hokies get four
- 1:11:40players, drafted, James Mitchell, 177 to Detroit Amar'e
- 1:11:46bar, no 189 to Carolina, Luke tenuta 2009 to Buffalo and let's
- 1:11:51see the Smith 215 to Arizona. Are the other names we've had on
- 1:11:56our list and we talked about, who are you, shocked that did
- 1:11:58not get drafted. Did not get drafted.
- 1:12:02Jermaine Waller. I thought he would, at least get
- 1:12:05drafted. Just based off the earlier tape
- 1:12:09and what he did in the front half of 2021, I think the
- 1:12:15injuries and the back a performance, as a result of
- 1:12:19those injuries. Along with, I think, in some
- 1:12:22ways, Caleb Farley going so high and then and then being injured,
- 1:12:28so early in his career. I think some of that is You're
- 1:12:31playing into that but I think Waller could you know
- 1:12:35potentially get in there and stick.
- 1:12:37I think, Detroit side up, awful fit for him with his skillset.
- 1:12:42Big thing for him is he's got to stay healthy now, absolutely
- 1:12:46Jermaine with shock to me because I said, six guys will
- 1:12:48get drafted. He was one shock to me.
- 1:12:50The other was brought as it got later.
- 1:12:53I thought Center versatile, guard guy would get, would
- 1:12:57someone would just draft him? Just like this is just a shot.
- 1:13:00Not if he develops right, we've got a swing guy on the inside
- 1:13:04right now. So I was shocked, even get
- 1:13:09drafted, I mean he went to Cleveland good spot for him.
- 1:13:12They just got rid of JC Treader who was a pretty experienced.
- 1:13:15So there's a couple guys in front of him but there's not
- 1:13:19like that one big you know, Pro Bowl, solid veteran, type guy,
- 1:13:25you're not going to beat out you know talking about the other
- 1:13:29ones we already talked about Jordan Williams.
- 1:13:30Go To Miami Trey. Turner goes to Las Vegas,
- 1:13:33Blackshear to Buffalo, shanghai's to Arizona, John
- 1:13:36Parker, remote catches on with the Saints.
- 1:13:39Now, let's flip back where you shot the James Mitchell went
- 1:13:42before anybody else? No, because I knew that he had,
- 1:13:46probably the biggest upside of any player.
- 1:13:52Just based on his size, his skill.
- 1:13:54He's put, he's got pretty decent tape out there.
- 1:13:57We didn't utilize them the way that we probably should have,
- 1:13:59but the tape that is out there. On him is good.
- 1:14:02He's got the size. Got the measurables.
- 1:14:04He wasn't able to do, you know, some of the stuff at the combine
- 1:14:09but, you know, overall he's been able to show his measurables
- 1:14:12before so that wasn't as big of a deal.
- 1:14:15So that doesn't shock me. It doesn't necessarily shocked
- 1:14:18me that bar. No, was the next one off the
- 1:14:20board because again, another physical trait player versatile
- 1:14:25player that you can do some different things with it has
- 1:14:28some upside at either. Either, you know, a heavy
- 1:14:32blitzing for three scheme, or potentially, an edge player in a
- 1:14:383-4 or a situational rusher in a traditional 43 as a defensive
- 1:14:43end. Oh yeah, he's one of those guys,
- 1:14:46if you're running a system where you have like a wine and you
- 1:14:50stick him at nine as first year and say go or you put them on
- 1:14:53special teams to go try to block the punt.
- 1:14:55My shocker of all these was the seat of Smith.
- 1:14:58Going to 15. Let's see.
- 1:15:00This myth could become a starter in the NFL.
- 1:15:07First, he is going to be a swing guard.
- 1:15:10That can play either side of the line solidly and make spot
- 1:15:13starts him going that late, especially where he was ranked
- 1:15:18because if you look, he was a top-10 Garland.
- 1:15:20So many guys have big boards and it shows you the value of the
- 1:15:23guards, but it also shows you me and Brian were talking about.
- 1:15:27He's a Colts fan IO Niners fan. We really don't have spots for
- 1:15:32guys who are potential starters. We don't What we have spots for
- 1:15:37and it's how we kind of drafted, right?
- 1:15:38Brian. We took a guy to Fordham in a
- 1:15:41guy that you tap on the offensive line because they're
- 1:15:45looked at developing, why do we take those guys?
- 1:15:49Because is anybody in their right, mind going to sign a kid
- 1:15:53out of Fordham or kid out of UTEP to their roster as the
- 1:15:57season begins? Yep.
- 1:16:05They go on your practice squad. A guy like Lucy to Smith if the
- 1:16:09Colts or the 49ers pick him up, he could fit in our schemes if
- 1:16:15he's not if he's essentially the fifth or sixth guard and we have
- 1:16:18to cut him, he's not coming back to you.
- 1:16:22He's not it's just simple as that.
- 1:16:25Sure. So, who do you think you?
- 1:16:34I feel like I look at it. I'm glad for guys when I'm glad
- 1:16:38all these guys signed. Anyone stick out to you is Maybe
- 1:16:44in two or three years, we're talking about them in a good
- 1:16:47way, you know, I will stick with my my train here, but I'm going,
- 1:16:51I think black. She is going to be a guy that
- 1:16:52sticks on a roster even though it was undrafted yunos
- 1:16:55undrafted. I feel like what they do in
- 1:16:58Buffalo he could he could be the gadget guy up there so I could
- 1:17:03definitely see that and hey the old special teams coach.
- 1:17:08Yeah. Best he knows how to get kickers
- 1:17:10man. Deputies got a lot of kickers
- 1:17:12Italy, right? Nail so, yep.
- 1:17:15Woman might stick. All right.
- 1:17:18Brian a, did you watch the Kentucky Derby Saturday?
- 1:17:21I did, I did. That.
- 1:17:24Was that was a. That was a, that was a good one.
- 1:17:27Crazy. Right?
- 1:17:28The, the the was it a drone angle is they were making the
- 1:17:33turn. Did you have you seen that
- 1:17:34picture? Yeah.
- 1:17:37The way that what Rich King? Came up right now.
- 1:17:43Rich strike, excuse me, straight, 80 to 1 odds, he
- 1:17:47literally got in because somebody got scratched, like,
- 1:17:51two days before. A21 eyes wins the Derby.
- 1:17:56Also that horses mean if you did not see him afterward, I'm
- 1:18:01really fighting people. Yeah, he has an attitude but
- 1:18:07Mike Leach made a great tweeting, a great statement, he
- 1:18:12said that horse winning the Kentucky.
- 1:18:13Derby's a good example of why an expanded playoff as needed, that
- 1:18:18horse hadn't won. All the races leading up, but he
- 1:18:21got the key word is Chance, and it happened.
- 1:18:28Right here. You know, we talked about this
- 1:18:33sometimes. You just need one.
- 1:18:37The difference. Is that with a playoff, it's not
- 1:18:39just one, right? Like I said, just one shot, you
- 1:18:41got you got it, put put a little run together.
- 1:18:45You got, there's a little difference there but having a
- 1:18:48seat at the table is important. And having a seat at the table,
- 1:18:54gives you your Longshot, right? You're not necessarily, you're
- 1:18:59not favored to win. It's not likely that you're
- 1:19:01winning. You're a long shot for a reason,
- 1:19:03just like Rich strike was a long shot for a reason.
- 1:19:07Sometimes all the cart sometimes all the cards come together in
- 1:19:11the long shot wins or a long shot, can make a run that, you
- 1:19:15know, you don't normally don't make it's very unlikely.
- 1:19:20That a 12 seed would win a college football playoff, but it
- 1:19:26helps long-term that 12th seed. Be able to consistently compete
- 1:19:34and potentially build towards a scenario where they can win a
- 1:19:39college football player. Exactly.
- 1:19:41Do I expect Rich strike to win the Triple Crown?
- 1:19:44No, I don't it all. But if you was the 12 and he
- 1:19:49played 25 and he caught the game of his life, there you go,
- 1:19:54that's all you need now. I mean, everybody's talking
- 1:19:56about rich strike, even if he doesn't win, the Triple Crown,
- 1:19:59everybody's still talking about rich, straight, whatever, Or
- 1:20:03ever. So in that case you kind of look
- 1:20:05at the college football playoff and think, you know number five,
- 1:20:08Alabama has to play somebody with a week to prepare and they
- 1:20:13lose its forever. Going to be talked about it's
- 1:20:16Boise State Oklahoma. Those seven a game still talked
- 1:20:20about to this day. When that upset happened.
- 1:20:26Yep. And that's all you want.
- 1:20:28That's all. That's almost.
- 1:20:29That's, that's all most 85% of the college football World
- 1:20:33wants, right? We just want a chance to sit at
- 1:20:35the table. Just one seat.
- 1:20:38You put us at the end there. We just want a chance to sit at
- 1:20:41the table. Yeah, because I mean it's some
- 1:20:44point depending on where we're heading.
- 1:20:50The seats are going to get even more difficult to obtain.
- 1:20:56Mmm, it's also true that so the more of them we have the better,
- 1:21:04very, very true. My friend.
- 1:21:05Hi, before we shut it down tonight.
- 1:21:09Guy we chat with off and on all the time, blew up over the
- 1:21:13weekend. Our boy, the Diablo fan account
- 1:21:17deferred walk on. Tweet of the year in my opinion
- 1:21:23but you know and it's the truth. This is the truth.
- 1:21:28Men will literally sit around a name random sports players for
- 1:21:31two hours instead of going to therapy.
- 1:21:34Yes. Because Sid bream was very close
- 1:21:37to being out with the bomb. Nice
- 1:22:10guys. And if they're all of the same
- 1:22:13age, Span. We literally can sit here and
- 1:22:17name and go to any sport to. That's the funny part.
- 1:22:21It's not just like, oh, it's just football.
- 1:22:23No, pretty sure we can go basketball.
- 1:22:26And hey, remember I Vernon Maxwell at?
