- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, from the Star Reynolds Sports Desk, your 93.3 KJR
- 0:04Speaker 1: FM Sports Headlines.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Good morning. Back home in Seattle. Headlines are brought to
- 0:10Speaker 2: you by Frost Brewed Coors Light. As cold as the Rockies.
- 0:13Speaker 2: One day after Mariners announced Dan Wilson was out as manager,
- 0:17Speaker 2: Mariners president of baseball operations, Jared DePoto, said of the
- 0:20Speaker 2: team failing to make the playoffs for the ninth time
- 0:22Speaker 2: in 11 years with DePoto in charge that, quote, the
- 0:25Speaker 2: blame falls on me first. and that if he didn't
- 0:29Speaker 2: have a job today, quote, I'd be justified. DePoto said
- 0:33Speaker 2: of the Mariners, our culture needs a reset, and that
- 0:36Speaker 2: he intends for the next manager to, unlike the other
- 0:38Speaker 2: two in the last 11 years under DePoto, to have
- 0:41Speaker 2: major league managerial experience after a, quote, exhaustive search. DePoto said, quote,
- 0:48Speaker 2: this year's failure requires that we look outside to find
- 0:51Speaker 2: someone who might be able to poke holes in what
- 0:52Speaker 2: we're doing and help us see something that perhaps we're
- 0:55Speaker 2: blind to.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Oh, we'll hear a lot of it coming up.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Jessamyn McIntyre was there yesterday, and we will hear more
- 1:01Speaker 2: from Jerry DiPoto on the show. Seahawks coach Mike McDonald
- 1:05Speaker 2: says after benching Jadarian Price for fumbling in the second
- 1:08Speaker 2: time in two games Sunday at Washington, quote, we're going
- 1:11Speaker 2: to continue to give him the ball. He also said
- 1:15Speaker 2: after the team got back home yesterday from their first
- 1:17Speaker 2: loss in 10 months that, quote, I love this team
- 1:19Speaker 2: and their effort and their attitude Monday to improve and
- 1:22Speaker 2: perfect the process of winning. He also said Julian Love
- 1:25Speaker 2: has a chance to practice this week, his day-to-day with
- 1:27Speaker 2: the calf injury that kept him out of the Washington game.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Pro Bowl veteran safety, they need him in the back
- 1:32Speaker 2: of the secondary for sure. Chicago third-string quarterback Case Keenum
- 1:37Speaker 2: on his eighth NFL team lit up the Philadelphia Eagles
- 1:39Speaker 2: in the Bears' 27-7 victory last night. Both teams are
- 1:42Speaker 2: now 2-1. Jim Harbaugh, the coach of the 0-3 Chargers
- 1:46Speaker 2: that come to Lumen Field on Sunday to play the Seahawks,
- 1:48Speaker 2: says Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, quote, has to be better.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Herbert finished with 226 passing yards, one touchdown on an interception,
- 1:56Speaker 2: and LA's loss to Buffalo on Sunday. Justin Herbert is
- 2:00Speaker 2: the 30th in the NFL in passer rating right now.
- 2:03Speaker 2: He's three touchdowns, four interceptions, third most INTs in the league,
- 2:07Speaker 2: eight sacks in three games. He's completed only 59% of
- 2:10Speaker 2: his throws, 7% under his career average. The NHL regular
- 2:14Speaker 2: season begins today with five games. ESPN is broadcasting a
- 2:17Speaker 2: tripleheader beginning this afternoon with Florida at the defending Stanley
- 2:20Speaker 2: Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes, Montreal's at Toronto, the Rangers at Boston.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Vancouver's at Edmonton, Chicago's at Vegas to open the NHL
- 2:28Speaker 2: season today. The Kraken open their season Thursday in Calgary
- 2:32Speaker 2: right here in your home for the Kraken 93.3 KJR.
- 2:33Speaker 2: The Major League Baseball playoffs that the Mariners aren't in
- 2:37Speaker 2: for the 44th time in 50 seasons begin today. Start
- 2:41Speaker 2: of the best of three wildcard round. Phillies at Braves
- 2:44Speaker 2: are starting the morning. White Sox-Astros, a bullpen game. Both
- 2:48Speaker 2: teams are having a bullpen committee game in the playoffs.
- 2:52Speaker 2: That's ridiculous.
- 2:53Speaker 3: I think that's really weird.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Is Luis Castillo going to start that game for the
- 2:56Speaker 2: White Sox? He's been in the bullpen lately in Chicago.
- 2:59Speaker 2: That's an afternoon game. Red Sox-Yankees, primetime on the East Coast,
- 3:02Speaker 2: 8 o'clock at Yankee Stadium. 5 o'clock our time, and
- 3:04Speaker 2: the Cubs pod raises the nightcap 7 o'clock. All games
- 3:07Speaker 2: on NBC, NBC Sports Network, and Peacock for the wildcard round.
- 3:12Speaker 2: And the U.S. Senate last night passed the Protect College
- 3:15Speaker 2: Sports Act. It's been in the works for almost this
- 3:17Speaker 2: entire year. The bill provides the NCAA with antitrust exemption
- 3:21Speaker 2: to help enforce a cap on how much teams can
- 3:24Speaker 2: play their athletes. If the bill becomes law and it
- 3:27Speaker 2: still has to go through the House, athletes would be
- 3:29Speaker 2: limited to transferring just one time without penalty during their
- 3:32Speaker 2: college career. None of those six transfers.
- 3:35Speaker 3: Didn't this used to be that way?
- 3:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:38Speaker 2: It would reinforce NCAA rules that limit athletes to a
- 3:40Speaker 2: five-year window to compete in college that begins either when
- 3:43Speaker 2: they finish high school or they turn 19 years old.
- 3:45Speaker 2: The bill, again, still must pass the House of Representatives,
- 3:48Speaker 2: which may not happen. A vote there in the house
- 3:51Speaker 2: may not happen until late November or after the new
- 3:53Speaker 2: year begins on me. Christopher Kidd is back in the house.
- 3:56Speaker 4: Yes.
- 3:57Speaker 2: This morning he was on the air.
- 3:58Speaker 5: Thank goodness.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Producer and contributing to Chuck Powell's morning show. Yeah, thank goodness.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Great to see Chris. He called me at 6.55 this
- 4:06Speaker 2: morning to be on Chuck's show at 7. It was
- 4:07Speaker 2: such a welcome call.
- 4:09Speaker 3: Oh, I love that.
- 4:10Speaker 6: To hear Chris.
- 4:10Speaker 3: I bear hugged him when I saw him yesterday.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Yeah, that was great. Like he never left. Chris Kidd,
- 4:15Speaker 2: he's going to be back now. He's the producer for
- 4:17Speaker 2: the morning show. He's got the early shift. Jess from
- 4:19Speaker 2: McIntyre and I, Greg Bell here, 10 a.m. to noon
- 4:22Speaker 2: on 93.3 KJRFM. We get to see each other again
- 4:25Speaker 2: instead of doing.
- 4:25Speaker 3: This remote computer.
- 4:27Speaker 1: I know.
- 4:27Speaker 3: You are all over the place.
- 4:29Speaker 2: For now.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:30Speaker 2: I was on the East Coast back from the Seahawks.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Trip was in New York yesterday. And now back here
- 4:36Speaker 2: in Seattle where a lot has happened since I left
- 4:39Speaker 2: on Saturday.
- 4:39Speaker 7: Yep.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Talk about Jerry DiPoto. We've talked so much about the
- 4:44Speaker 2: president of baseball operations. Well, he got to tell his
- 4:47Speaker 2: side of the story yesterday. Jess, when you were there,
- 4:51Speaker 2: I've seen him described as contrite yesterday. We don't know
- 4:55Speaker 2: him as that here. We know him as the opposite.
- 4:57Speaker 2: We know him as uncontrite. How was he to you?
- 5:00Speaker 4: He seemed nervous, to be honest. He definitely didn't have
- 5:05Speaker 4: that same. I have people, and these aren't my words,
- 5:09Speaker 4: but people kind of have that salesman charm. They would
- 5:13Speaker 4: use that to describe him. He did not have that whatsoever.
- 5:17Speaker 4: He just seemed dejected and slightly.
- 5:20Speaker 3: Nervous, to be honest.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Was he humble, do you think?
- 5:24Speaker 3: I don't know if that man gets humble. I don't know.
- 5:28Speaker 4: It did not come off as humbled.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Well said.
- 5:33Speaker 4: It came off of As standing in front of a
- 5:37Speaker 4: firing squad, to be honest.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Well, I mean, there were darts that were thrown.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Were they pointing questions?
- 5:43Speaker 3: Yeah, Softie asked the best ones, to be honest.
- 5:46Speaker 4: And, I mean, he flat-out asked him, and you'll hear
- 5:49Speaker 4: it in a minute here, but he flat-out asked him
- 5:52Speaker 4: if he still deserves his job.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Well, yeah, I do. I want to get paid. Yes,
- 5:59Speaker 2: to Softie's credit, he was there asking questions, as was.
- 6:03Speaker 4: I mean, everyone asks good questions.
- 6:05Speaker 3: I'll give them that.
- 6:06Speaker 4: And then also people need to understand beat writers are
- 6:10Speaker 4: the ones, as you've said several times, that have to
- 6:12Speaker 4: continue to show up and continue to have access. And
- 6:16Speaker 4: I know that Softie can go there and ask maybe
- 6:19Speaker 4: something that they wouldn't ask. But that's what the fan
- 6:24Speaker 4: wants to hear. And that's what we are here at
- 6:26Speaker 4: this station.
- 6:27Speaker 2: That's a line I walk all the time between what
- 6:29Speaker 2: a fan wants to hear and wants the questions answered.
- 6:32Speaker 2: with the Seahawks versus what I can get away with
- 6:34Speaker 2: asking without just being blackballed and say, I'm not talking
- 6:38Speaker 2: to you anymore, which happens in this business. So I do,
- 6:42Speaker 2: I think about how do I, it's, I constantly, when
- 6:45Speaker 2: I'm asking questions go through my head, how do I
- 6:47Speaker 2: frame this? So it's not confrontational yet. It gets to
- 6:50Speaker 2: the heart of what a fan might want to know.
- 6:51Speaker 2: And that takes some experience and skill and bumping into
- 6:55Speaker 2: walls and messing up a few times. So yes, Jessamyn's right.
- 6:59Speaker 2: You'll hear from, Jerry DiPoto and what he had to say.
- 7:02Speaker 2: A best of Jerry DiPoto, if there was a thing
- 7:04Speaker 2: yesterday from his 30 minutes or so. You'll hear about
- 7:07Speaker 2: nine minutes of that. Mariners principal John Stanton also talked yesterday.
- 7:11Speaker 2: He sat down with King 5's Paul Silvey. First of all,
- 7:14Speaker 2: Paul Silvey deserves a little bit of attaboy. He was
- 7:16Speaker 2: in the press box with me in Washington into Sunday
- 7:19Speaker 2: evening with his King 5 postgame show. Then he got
- 7:23Speaker 2: on a plane. He got on the plane at one
- 7:25Speaker 2: of the seats that I gave up to stay in
- 7:26Speaker 2: New York an extra day. I was going to get
- 7:28Speaker 2: on the 7 a.m. out of Dulles back to Seattle.
- 7:31Speaker 2: And Paul switched to get on that to get back
- 7:33Speaker 2: in time for the press conference and the Mariners to do.
- 7:37Speaker 2: And he went straight to the station and went straight
- 7:40Speaker 2: to the yard, which is right across the street from
- 7:41Speaker 2: the station, King 5's right across the street from T-Mobile Park,
- 7:45Speaker 2: to sit down with John Stanton. And then he had
- 7:47Speaker 2: me on the show and he taped a segment on
- 7:49Speaker 2: his King 5 Ultimate Sports show that airs at 3
- 7:53Speaker 2: o'clock every day on King 5. He taped it at 1.15.
- 7:56Speaker 2: So man, was that guy really busy yesterday with not
- 7:59Speaker 2: much sleep. But he, Paul Silvey, talked to John Stanton.
- 8:02Speaker 2: You'll hear what Stanton said about this failure of a season.
- 8:05Speaker 2: And Paul Silvey, speaking of asking questions fans want to know,
- 8:10Speaker 2: he said, what do you say to fans who think
- 8:11Speaker 2: you're not committed to winning? That you're more worried about
- 8:14Speaker 2: the business side and not the winning a World Series side?
- 8:17Speaker 2: He asked John Stanton that, and you'll hear John Stanton's
- 8:20Speaker 2: answer to that. We'll talk about why the Seahawks aren't
- 8:22Speaker 2: phased about their first loss in 10 games. You'll also
- 8:26Speaker 2: hear about Mike McDonald talking about the situations with Jadarian
- 8:29Speaker 2: Price's fumbling with Julian Love's injury, with Nick Emanwuri's playing time,
- 8:32Speaker 2: and how they're using him in the defense now that
- 8:34Speaker 2: he's back from that ankle surgery. I asked the coach
- 8:38Speaker 2: yesterday about Josh Jobe's trouble covering Terry McLaurin. Of course,
- 8:41Speaker 2: there are a lot of people in the NFL who
- 8:43Speaker 2: have had trouble for decades trying to cover Terry McLaurin,
- 8:45Speaker 2: the Washington wide receiver. But I also asked McDonald, and
- 8:48Speaker 2: you'll hear his answer about whether former Cowboys All-Pro cornerback
- 8:52Speaker 2: Trevon Diggs is going to play for the Seahawks anytime soon. Remember,
- 8:55Speaker 2: he's been on the ramp-up plan after not getting here,
- 8:59Speaker 2: signed until late August, not practicing since January. Well, is
- 9:04Speaker 2: he ready to play, and is he an option off
- 9:05Speaker 2: the practice squad? They've got an All-Pro cornerformer. All-pro cornerback
- 9:09Speaker 2: on their practice squad who hasn't played it down yet
- 9:11Speaker 2: for the Seahawks. 11 o'clock, our weekly visit with Jory Epstein,
- 9:16Speaker 2: the senior NFL writer for Yahoo Sports from New York City.
- 9:18Speaker 2: I've already connected with her. She's ready to go. She's
- 9:20Speaker 2: going to tell us all about what Jim Harbaugh's Chargers
- 9:23Speaker 2: are 0-3 for coming into Seattle this week. About the
- 9:27Speaker 2: Giants being 2-1. About the Raiders being 3-0 with Clint Kubiak.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Lots to talk about around the NFL with our friend Jory.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Thanks to Zeke's Pizza and Zeke'sPizza.com at 11 o'clock. 11.30,
- 9:40Speaker 2: we'll be back. Your text from the 49451 Tacoma Dodge
- 9:43Speaker 2: text line. And, of course, your talkbacks, the iHeartRadio app
- 9:46Speaker 2: or their website, 933KGR. com. Jess Minless playing back at 11.30.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Any talkbacks you give. She played like five.
- 9:54Speaker 3: Of them yesterday. Yeah, and that was whittled down. Yeah.
- 9:58Speaker 2: We got a lot of them. 1135 Factor Fiction. Jessamyn's
- 10:00Speaker 2: turn today. She's going to go NFL. Brought to you
- 10:03Speaker 2: by the Lucky Eagle Casino Hotel. Your chance to win
- 10:06Speaker 2: $ 1, 000 this week. $ 10, 000 by the end of the contest. Army, Navy, Friday,
- 10:11Speaker 2: December the 11th. And Ian Furness will join us to
- 10:14Speaker 2: talk about what's going on in his show 12 until 3.
- 10:15Speaker 2: And I said, wasn't at the yard yesterday to hear
- 10:19Speaker 2: Jerry DePoto. Of course, I saw the comments that he
- 10:22Speaker 2: made afterwards, and that was the news of the day yesterday.
- 10:24Speaker 2: He said, quote, our culture needs a reset. And then
- 10:28Speaker 2: he asked himself, what is culture? Nobody asked him that.
- 10:31Speaker 2: He did. He said, it's the standards you're willing to uphold.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Maybe you already had this clip, part of what he
- 10:38Speaker 2: had to say. But that's all right. We can play
- 10:40Speaker 2: that next segment.
- 10:41Speaker 3: We have a very large portion of Jerry.
- 10:43Speaker 2: DePoto that we should get to.
- 10:44Speaker 3: We'll get nine minutes next.
- 10:47Speaker 2: We'll save that for the next segment.
- 10:48Speaker 4: Yes.
- 10:49Speaker 2: He talked about the lack of accountability that Cal Raleigh, J.P. Crawford,
- 10:52Speaker 2: Logan Gilbert talked about. And at one point, DePoto said, quote,
- 10:57Speaker 2: I did an ineffective job of making sure that we
- 11:00Speaker 2: held one another accountable because we started with standards and
- 11:04Speaker 2: it faded. That's not just on our players. That's on me.
- 11:08Speaker 2: It's on our front office group. It's on the staff
- 11:10Speaker 2: and the players collectively. But he talked about this culture
- 11:14Speaker 2: and this accountability. And he said the culture is, quote,
- 11:18Speaker 2: it's the standards you're willing to uphold, Jerry DiPoto said.
- 11:21Speaker 2: It's the belief systems you share. It's what you're willing
- 11:24Speaker 2: to tolerate. And this year we tolerated an environment where
- 11:27Speaker 2: we just didn't live up to our own standards. That's
- 11:30Speaker 2: where we need to reset. To me, that is pointing
- 11:34Speaker 2: a finger directly at Dan Wilson. I'm not sure why
- 11:39Speaker 2: a president of baseball operations would not be able to
- 11:41Speaker 2: affect that culture and what you're willing to tolerate. Because
- 11:46Speaker 2: the president of baseball operations can direct Jerry DePoto to say,
- 11:51Speaker 2: Julio Rodriguez, you threw the ball in the stands in
- 11:54Speaker 2: Milwaukee with one out. You sit for a couple of
- 11:56Speaker 2: days and think about that. Josh Naylor, you didn't run
- 11:59Speaker 2: out of double playground ball in the game I went
- 12:01Speaker 2: to in Oakland last month. You sit and think about that.
- 12:05Speaker 2: But that never happened. And that didn't happen from Dan Wilson.
- 12:08Speaker 2: And that didn't happen from Jerry DePoto, who could have
- 12:10Speaker 2: absolutely made that happen. Jerry DePoto pushes a lot of
- 12:14Speaker 2: buttons that go on in that dugout, including iPad baseball.
- 12:17Speaker 2: And for him not to push those buttons, as he
- 12:19Speaker 2: put it at the start of his talk yesterday, is
- 12:21Speaker 2: on him. And so that accountability and culture piece needs
- 12:25Speaker 2: to change with him as well as the new manager
- 12:27Speaker 2: he brings in. If you missed the news yesterday, it
- 12:29Speaker 2: was during our show. They also got rid of most
- 12:31Speaker 2: of the coaching staff other than the pitching coaches. Everybody else,
- 12:35Speaker 2: base coaches, hitting coaches, including Kevin Seitzer, the head hitting coach,
- 12:39Speaker 2: they're gone. Maniacta, gone. Eric Young, base coach, gone. And
- 12:44Speaker 2: so they are starting mostly over inside the dugout, yet
- 12:47Speaker 2: they are not starting over those at the top of
- 12:49Speaker 2: the dugout. Those are the overseeing the dugout. Those are
- 12:52Speaker 2: the baseball operations chiefs. Justin Hollander is returning, and Jerry
- 12:56Speaker 2: DiPoto is going to return for a 12th season as
- 12:59Speaker 2: the president of baseball operations. 49451, when you hear him say,
- 13:04Speaker 2: Jerry DiPoto, that we need to change the culture with
- 13:07Speaker 2: the Mariners, how do you feel about Jerry DiPoto being
- 13:10Speaker 2: in charge of that culture change and the man- that's
- 13:13Speaker 2: going to bring in a new manager.
- 13:14Speaker 3: He was very emphatic that they're going outside.
- 13:17Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 13:17Speaker 3: They're going external.
- 13:18Speaker 2: So that's a departure, right? It was Scott Service, who
- 13:22Speaker 2: DePoto had worked with with the Angels, who had never
- 13:25Speaker 2: been a manager but had been on benches in the
- 13:26Speaker 2: major leagues, former catcher. And then it was Dan Wilson
- 13:30Speaker 2: just plucked out a semi-retirement figurehead status with no experience
- 13:34Speaker 2: coaching anybody, except a girls' softball team his daughter was
- 13:37Speaker 2: once on. That's it. So that alone is a start,
- 13:40Speaker 2: I guess.
- 13:41Speaker 3: Well, yeah. I think back to that 95 team, right?
- 13:46Speaker 4: And people don't want the retread of 95. How did
- 13:49Speaker 4: the players from that team feel about this? Dan stepped
- 13:54Speaker 4: in in a situation where he was underprepared because he
- 13:59Speaker 4: didn't have the experience and still stepped up and did
- 14:02Speaker 4: it and did what he did last year. And this
- 14:04Speaker 4: year didn't go the way they planned. It's like he
- 14:07Speaker 4: did them a solid job. And then all of a
- 14:09Speaker 4: sudden just gets, I mean, you'll hear it next segment,
- 14:13Speaker 4: but Softie flat out asked him if he was fired
- 14:17Speaker 4: or if he resigned. And Jerry DiPoto said, those are
- 14:20Speaker 4: personal questions. So, and they will remain personal. Gather from
- 14:26Speaker 4: that what you will. But I think the sentiment is
- 14:30Speaker 4: that he was let go.
- 14:32Speaker 3: And- We don't know. That remains private.
- 14:36Speaker 4: But I will also say that I wonder how the guys,
- 14:39Speaker 4: how your Edgar Martinez is, your Jay Buhners, your Ken
- 14:43Speaker 4: Griffey Jrs, like those who spend a lot of time
- 14:47Speaker 4: around this organization. I wonder how they feel about that
- 14:50Speaker 4: because that's our guy. And we all know Dan Wilson
- 14:53Speaker 4: is a good friend and a great person.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Well, I'm speaking third person, but I was told during
- 14:59Speaker 2: the Seahawks game that Ken Griffey Jr. spoke on the
- 15:02Speaker 2: Mariners podcast. radio broadcast on Sunday and talked about a
- 15:06Speaker 2: need for a culture change in the clubhouse. And he
- 15:09Speaker 2: thought that the current way that the clubhouse operates is
- 15:11Speaker 2: not going to win. It's not going to work. So
- 15:14Speaker 2: there's one guy from that team. Here's somebody else in
- 15:18Speaker 2: the past that at first glance, you might say, oh,
- 15:20Speaker 2: they're going to bring another luminary from Mariners history to
- 15:23Speaker 2: be the manager. Raul Abanez is getting a lot of
- 15:26Speaker 2: talk nationally already to be the next Mariners manager.
- 15:29Speaker 3: I really am a big fan of Raul.
- 15:31Speaker 2: He has spent a lot of time in what I've
- 15:34Speaker 2: read to be a very large role in the Los
- 15:37Speaker 2: Angeles Dodgers front office in the last half dozen years
- 15:40Speaker 2: or so. And a lot of people around Major League
- 15:42Speaker 2: Baseball believe Raul Ibanez is going to be a manager
- 15:45Speaker 2: sooner than later. I heard John Palmarosi talk about this yesterday,
- 15:49Speaker 2: that around baseball circles, they think Raul Ibanez is getting
- 15:52Speaker 2: a job soon to be a field manager in a
- 15:54Speaker 2: dugout in the Major Leagues. And why not Seattle? He
- 15:59Speaker 2: has more experience than Dan Wilson does, in the least
- 16:02Speaker 2: that he is in a World Series champion organization in
- 16:05Speaker 2: the front office doing baseball operations, but not on the field.
- 16:09Speaker 2: So that would be yet another hire of not having
- 16:11Speaker 2: major league managerial experience. You're saying it sounded like DiPoto
- 16:15Speaker 2: wants somebody who's been in a dugout in the major
- 16:17Speaker 2: leagues before.
- 16:18Speaker 4: Yes, he said he did not say it was a prerequisite.
- 16:21Speaker 4: What he said is that it's preferred.
- 16:23Speaker 2: Tori Lovello, the manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks, gets mentioned
- 16:26Speaker 2: a lot. Steven Voigt is the manager of the Cleveland Guardians,
- 16:31Speaker 2: who has an offseason home in Tumwater. He and his
- 16:34Speaker 2: wife do.
- 16:35Speaker 3: That's the biggest name that I've seen put out there.
- 16:37Speaker 2: Yes. The problem, of course, is he keeps taking the
- 16:40Speaker 2: Guardians to the playoffs every year. So why would the
- 16:42Speaker 2: Guardians give him up for free?
- 16:44Speaker 4: I wouldn't.
- 16:44Speaker 2: He's going to make him very difficult to leave and
- 16:47Speaker 2: probably offer him a huge, huge contract extension. The Guardians
- 16:50Speaker 2: are back in the play. They're the number two seed
- 16:52Speaker 2: in the American League right now for the playoffs. But
- 16:56Speaker 2: it is interesting to hear that he at least, DePoto,
- 16:58Speaker 2: recognizes they need to go outside of what they've done
- 17:01Speaker 2: so far in the manager spot.
- 17:02Speaker 4: Yes, that they're not going to keep retreading, which I
- 17:05Speaker 4: think a lot of fans have had an issue with. Like,
- 17:08Speaker 4: please stop rolling out these good memories from the past.
- 17:11Speaker 4: We need to do something.
- 17:12Speaker 2: Oh, so that's a plus. 49451, I would think that
- 17:16Speaker 2: you're encouraged on the text line. At least there's that,
- 17:19Speaker 2: that they're going to go outside the organization and manager
- 17:22Speaker 2: with experience. Then it begs the question, well, what manager
- 17:25Speaker 2: with experience wants to come here and work for iPad
- 17:28Speaker 2: baseball man? I mean, that really becomes the rub. Who
- 17:34Speaker 2: is going to come here? Forget about a Joe Maddon.
- 17:36Speaker 2: I cannot imagine Joe Maddon would even interview here with
- 17:40Speaker 2: knowing how the Mariners play and the handedness and the
- 17:44Speaker 2: iPad baseball. I keep using the term iPad baseball because
- 17:46Speaker 2: to me that just encapsulates everything they do. The analytics
- 17:49Speaker 2: and the numbers driven and the exit velocities.
- 17:51Speaker 3: Well, You know, that started on the writer's side of things.
- 17:55Speaker 4: And I feel like it just like merged with actual
- 17:58Speaker 4: clubhouses and operations. I mean, I know there was the
- 18:00Speaker 4: Billy Bean era and everything, but they didn't use iPads.
- 18:04Speaker 2: I went through that.
- 18:05Speaker 4: Yep.
- 18:06Speaker 8: Yep.
- 18:07Speaker 3: I just think that.
- 18:09Speaker 4: And bringing Edgar in as the batting coach helped a
- 18:11Speaker 4: lot because he kind of like translated it instead of like,
- 18:15Speaker 4: you don't need to worry and think about these analytics
- 18:18Speaker 4: when you're going up to bat. You don't go, okay,
- 18:20Speaker 4: this guy pitches at this point and he's at 0.339. Okay,
- 18:25Speaker 4: just go and hit. Like he was just a hitting coach.
- 18:28Speaker 4: And I thought that that was really good for the
- 18:30Speaker 4: team as well. But it has fallen off.
- 18:33Speaker 2: To me, if you want to get a manager with
- 18:35Speaker 2: proven Major League winning experience, maybe one who's been to
- 18:38Speaker 2: a World Series, maybe a Joe Madden type. Again, Madden,
- 18:41Speaker 2: I can't see even wanting to sniff the Pacific Northwest.
- 18:44Speaker 2: But if you want to get that, do you, Jerry DiPoto,
- 18:47Speaker 2: have to release your manager? death grip on iPad baseball
- 18:52Speaker 2: and lording over a manager, making him do things by
- 18:55Speaker 2: the numbers. You've got to let a manager be managed,
- 18:58Speaker 2: manage the game, manage his players, manage from his gut,
- 19:01Speaker 2: manage how he knows instinctively and not bring in Rob
- 19:04Speaker 2: ref Schneider when it looks obvious that he's not going
- 19:06Speaker 2: to get a hit just because they brought a left-handed
- 19:08Speaker 2: pitcher and things like that, that he, the photo, if
- 19:13Speaker 2: they want to change, they got to change stuff like that.
- 19:16Speaker 2: And ditch the iPads, leave them up for a nice
- 19:18Speaker 2: little advisory thing, and like the Seahawks do, have them
- 19:21Speaker 2: as a resource to refer to. But Mike McDonald doesn't
- 19:25Speaker 2: do everything by the iPad and the numbers. He's got
- 19:27Speaker 2: Brian Ayers and guys who do it for him and
- 19:29Speaker 2: tell him what the numbers say in certain situations, including
- 19:33Speaker 2: in his ear during a game. But Mike McDonald still
- 19:36Speaker 2: coaches with guts and instinct and what he knows and
- 19:38Speaker 2: sees and feels in the moment. I didn't see that
- 19:42Speaker 2: at all this year. I saw paint-by-numbers analytics baseball from
- 19:46Speaker 2: an iPad. And how are you going to get a
- 19:48Speaker 2: proven major league manager? who's won games and won titles
- 19:52Speaker 2: in this league to do that? That, to me, is
- 19:55Speaker 2: the challenge. I mean, if Jerry DiPoto wants to change,
- 19:59Speaker 2: start there and let baseball people manage. Up next, you'll
- 20:04Speaker 2: hear from the baseball operations president of the Mariners, And
- 20:07Speaker 2: his talk yesterday, the greatest hits of the 30-minute talk
- 20:10Speaker 2: he had with the media, next on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 20:14Speaker 1: This report is sponsored by Taco Bell.
- 20:36Speaker 2: Welcome back. Greg Bell and Jessamyn McIntyre with you on
- 20:39Speaker 2: 93.3 KJRFM. A day after Jerry DiPoto, the president of
- 20:44Speaker 2: Mariners baseball operations, spoke for 30 minutes to the media
- 20:47Speaker 2: the day after he, it appears he, fired, or John Stanton,
- 20:52Speaker 2: both fired Dan Wilson as the manager after two full
- 20:56Speaker 2: seasons in the pratfall of this season. The worst, most
- 20:58Speaker 2: disappointing season ever for a team that should be in
- 21:01Speaker 2: the playoffs and absolutely should be contending for a World Series.
- 21:05Speaker 2: Jessam McIntyre was there at T-Mobile Park yesterday, and she
- 21:09Speaker 2: compiled what she thought were the best of comments of
- 21:11Speaker 2: those 30 minutes. This was Jerry DiPoto yesterday to the media.
- 21:18Speaker 5: Obviously, some level of blame for this season's failure. How
- 21:22Speaker 5: much blame do you and the front office take and
- 21:25Speaker 5: kind of assess out what all went wrong this season?
- 21:29Speaker 5: Kind of parsing out blame. Collectively, we failed. We failed
- 21:33Speaker 5: to play up to our own expectations, which are very high,
- 21:37Speaker 5: commensurate with the expectations that were put on us externally.
- 21:41Speaker 5: We have a very talented roster. We were seven outs
- 21:44Speaker 5: away from a World Series 11 months ago. And we
- 21:47Speaker 5: just collectively underperformed in every area. Obviously, the changes that
- 21:52Speaker 5: we made with Dan, with the coaching staff, much of
- 21:56Speaker 5: it was focused on the position player side. And that
- 22:00Speaker 5: wasn't the only struggle we had. Our pitching staff really,
- 22:06Speaker 5: especially in the second half, came up short. of its
- 22:09Speaker 5: typical expectations and all these things. This is what I'm
- 22:13Speaker 5: in charge of, is overseeing all of it. So the
- 22:15Speaker 5: blame falls on me first. And, you know, I guess
- 22:18Speaker 5: part of my job is making decisions for how to
- 22:22Speaker 5: get better and make sure this doesn't happen again. And,
- 22:24Speaker 5: you know, it happened. And failure is only failure if
- 22:27Speaker 5: you don't learn from it. We're hoping to learn these
- 22:31Speaker 5: lessons and move forward in a productive way. Jerry, what
- 22:34Speaker 5: did you learn? We're still working on that. If we
- 22:37Speaker 5: would have had the answers, we wouldn't be talking about
- 22:39Speaker 5: this today. You mentioned the pitching. It looks like Pete
- 22:42Speaker 5: and Trent's coming back.
- 22:43Speaker 8: What kind of went to that decision to retain them?
- 22:45Speaker 5: Their goodness over time and the quality of the programs
- 22:49Speaker 5: that they have put together are unquestionably awesome. Those guys
- 22:54Speaker 5: communicate incredibly well. Our pitchers love them for what they provide.
- 23:00Speaker 5: Trent has all the TLC in the world and the
- 23:02Speaker 5: ability to keep guys healthy and moving forward. And Woody
- 23:06Speaker 5: is as good a messenger as exists in that clubhouse space.
- 23:09Speaker 5: And from 2021 until today, we are.
- 23:14Speaker 5: Until mid-season of 2026, we're one of the three or
- 23:19Speaker 5: four best pitching staffs, one through 13, in MLB. And
- 23:24Speaker 5: we don't want to take three months and use that
- 23:27Speaker 5: as the criteria to ruin a program that has been
- 23:30Speaker 5: the backbone of what we've done for a decade. Jerry,
- 23:32Speaker 5: you made the decision to let go of Dan over
- 23:35Speaker 5: the weekend. did you consider moving on from him earlier
- 23:39Speaker 5: in the year and why did you wait until the
- 23:41Speaker 5: end of the season? The answer to the question is
- 23:45Speaker 5: it's an ongoing assessment. The end of the season is
- 23:48Speaker 5: the end of the season. As the season went along,
- 23:52Speaker 5: making in-season change is difficult. I've only done that once
- 23:55Speaker 5: in my entire career. We obviously at mid-season, we did
- 24:00Speaker 5: something that we've really not done, which is upset the
- 24:04Speaker 5: apple cart and Letting go of Bobby Magallanes was step one.
- 24:08Speaker 5: We have been trying to find ways to create more
- 24:13Speaker 5: urgency with the team on the field than we were
- 24:15Speaker 5: seeing day to day. And yeah, I mean, these conversations
- 24:19Speaker 5: don't just pop up. You don't wake up one morning
- 24:21Speaker 5: and say, this is it. Clearly it was a thought
- 24:24Speaker 5: as the season went along. But out of respect to Dan,
- 24:27Speaker 5: the clubhouse downstairs, we decided at a certain point, this
- 24:32Speaker 5: is our group. We're either going to make it with
- 24:34Speaker 5: them or make decisions once the season draws to a close.
- 24:37Speaker 5: And we did.
- 24:38Speaker 9: Was he let go or did he resign?
- 24:42Speaker 5: Those are personal issues that I think should remain personal.
- 24:45Speaker 9: And then for you, one of the questions we get
- 24:47Speaker 9: a lot is, This is now your third manager in
- 24:49Speaker 9: four years, obviously. After 11 years on the job, people
- 24:53Speaker 9: wonder why you should continue to get a crack at
- 24:56Speaker 9: doing this.
- 24:56Speaker 5: What do you say to that? You know, I say
- 24:59Speaker 5: that it's fair that they ask those questions. I wake
- 25:01Speaker 5: up and I look in the mirror every day trying
- 25:03Speaker 5: to figure out why this happened. For the last five years,
- 25:06Speaker 5: we were one of the winningest teams in Major League Baseball.
- 25:08Speaker 5: This year, we stunk. And it never got on track.
- 25:12Speaker 5: And again, that's on me first. I'm just trying to
- 25:14Speaker 5: find solutions.
- 25:16Speaker 4: The.
- 25:17Speaker 5: I feel proud of what we've built organizationally over these years.
- 25:20Speaker 5: You know, 11 years, it's two different tenures that I've had.
- 25:25Speaker 5: And in the last six years, I feel proud of
- 25:28Speaker 5: what we've accomplished on the field. It's been complete. And
- 25:31Speaker 5: this year was an opportunity to take that next or
- 25:34Speaker 5: final step, and we just didn't. And if I didn't
- 25:36Speaker 5: have a job today, it would be justified. You know,
- 25:39Speaker 5: we failed. And, again, we're going to attempt to learn
- 25:41Speaker 5: from that failure and lean into what I think is–
- 25:46Speaker 5: a great foundation to build on with homegrown players up
- 25:50Speaker 5: the middle, a complete rotation that I think many in
- 25:52Speaker 5: the league would love to have, and just reset our
- 25:56Speaker 5: culture and refocus ourselves on what we need to do
- 25:59Speaker 5: to get back to an efficient, clean, crisp brand of
- 26:05Speaker 5: baseball like the Mariners have played for a number of years.
- 26:08Speaker 2: What is your criteria then for hiring a new manager?
- 26:11Speaker 10: Is experience at the major league level in a managerial
- 26:13Speaker 10: position a prerequisite?
- 26:16Speaker 5: Not a prerequisite. It would be preferred. We will go
- 26:19Speaker 5: outside to hire our manager. We need fresh thought. We
- 26:23Speaker 5: need something new. It could be a shift in programming.
- 26:27Speaker 5: It could be a shift in messaging. It could be
- 26:29Speaker 5: a shift in language. We'll collaborate with whoever our future
- 26:33Speaker 5: manager is and try to find the right person. If
- 26:36Speaker 5: that person has major league managerial experience, that would be preferred.
- 26:41Speaker 5: But generally speaking, we're just looking for someone who has
- 26:44Speaker 5: high character, growth mindset, has the ability to think strategically
- 26:50Speaker 5: in the context of a major league game when that
- 26:53Speaker 5: happens very quickly. Obviously, we are one of 30 teams
- 27:00Speaker 5: in our league. Many would share the same criteria. There
- 27:03Speaker 5: are a lot of good people out there, and most
- 27:06Speaker 5: of what we've done, in recent years especially, has been insular.
- 27:10Speaker 5: And I think this year's failure requires that we look
- 27:13Speaker 5: outside to find someone who might be able to poke
- 27:16Speaker 5: holes in what we're doing and help us see something
- 27:18Speaker 5: that perhaps we're blind to. Because, you know, obviously this
- 27:23Speaker 5: is not been what we intended nor what we expected.
- 27:26Speaker 4: From our team.
- 27:28Speaker 5: Specifically with the pitching, that's been such a backbone of
- 27:31Speaker 5: what you guys have done for a long time. With
- 27:33Speaker 5: it going as far south as it did after the end,
- 27:35Speaker 5: do you have any kind of sense of What happened
- 27:37Speaker 5: there collectively, both bullpen and starting rotation with almost everybody
- 27:40Speaker 5: across the board in some form or fashion? Yeah, you know,
- 27:43Speaker 5: we've had a culture of relentless filling of the strike zone.
- 27:48Speaker 5: That's what we do. You know, we get ahead, we
- 27:51Speaker 5: stay ahead, we work ahead. Where we struggled this year
- 27:54Speaker 5: was we struggled in our two-strike execution, particularly in the
- 27:58Speaker 5: second half of the season. It's something our pitchers are
- 28:00Speaker 5: aware of. All of them have talked about it openly
- 28:04Speaker 5: in private discussion, and we know that's an area we
- 28:07Speaker 5: need to focus on moving forward. Trent and Woody talk
- 28:09Speaker 5: about it regularly and regularly. You know, it's something that
- 28:13Speaker 5: happened over time. We got so focused on winning our
- 28:17Speaker 5: 0-0 and winning our 1-1 that we forgot that was
- 28:20Speaker 5: only a proxy for the greater goal, which was finishing
- 28:22Speaker 5: the at-bat. And, you know, our prompt became the goal
- 28:27Speaker 5: at times. And that's not what we were ever intending. And, again,
- 28:31Speaker 5: we let it get away from us. And perhaps, you know,
- 28:34Speaker 5: new eyes, new voice, new thoughts can stop that from
- 28:37Speaker 5: happening in the next year.
- 28:40Speaker 9: I think a lot of people have a different definition
- 28:42Speaker 9: of what that may mean. What does that mean to you,
- 28:44Speaker 9: and are there examples of that maybe going.
- 28:46Speaker 5: Awry this year a little bit? Our culture needs a reset.
- 28:50Speaker 5: This team, without a doubt, we showed up, again, from
- 28:55Speaker 5: 2022 to 2025, and we had shortcomings, we had flaws,
- 28:59Speaker 5: but we played well. We were relentless in our strike throwing.
- 29:03Speaker 5: We were grinders in the batter's box. We played buttoned-up,
- 29:06Speaker 5: efficient defense with or without rangy players. And we didn't
- 29:12Speaker 5: beat ourselves. That was Mariners baseball for five years, and
- 29:16Speaker 5: that wasn't what we did this year. We showed up,
- 29:20Speaker 5: and all of those things were well below our standards.
- 29:24Speaker 5: What is culture? It's the standards you're willing to uphold.
- 29:27Speaker 5: It's the belief systems you share. It's what you're willing
- 29:31Speaker 5: to tolerate. And this year we tolerated an environment where
- 29:34Speaker 5: we just didn't live up to our own standards. And
- 29:37Speaker 5: that's where we need to reset.
- 29:39Speaker 10: So with that said, when you took over 11 years ago,
- 29:42Speaker 10: you took over a team that was 76-86.
- 29:44Speaker 5: This year, 76-86.
- 29:44Speaker 10: Do you believe that you're closer today to winning a
- 29:48Speaker 10: World Series with this group, and what will give you
- 29:51Speaker 10: confidence that you are?
- 29:53Speaker 5: Like I said, 11 months ago, we were seven outs away.
- 29:55Speaker 5: It's roughly the same group of players. Right now, we
- 30:00Speaker 5: have a group of young players. We have six major
- 30:03Speaker 5: league starters who are all homegrown and under the age
- 30:06Speaker 5: of 30. We have the runner-up in the MVP from
- 30:09Speaker 5: a year ago who's our homegrown catcher. We have the
- 30:12Speaker 5: center fielder who is a homegrown player. He's 25 years old,
- 30:16Speaker 5: has been a top ten in the MVP three times
- 30:18Speaker 5: in the last five years. Colt Emerson, Cole Young, Brendan Donovan,
- 30:22Speaker 5: Dom Canzone, Josh Naylor. This is a really talented roster.
- 30:28Speaker 5: and none of those guys are outside the prime years
- 30:32Speaker 5: of their careers. There's no reason why we shouldn't be
- 30:34Speaker 5: able to reset, look ourselves in the mirror. And I
- 30:37Speaker 5: know our players. We've had a lot of conversation privately
- 30:41Speaker 5: with our roster of players this past week, and I
- 30:44Speaker 5: know every one of them is already hungry to come
- 30:47Speaker 5: back and prove that this was an aberration.
- 30:51Speaker 2: Jerry DiPoto yesterday, president of baseball operations, saying they're not
- 30:55Speaker 2: going to be– Insular, as they've been the last couple
- 30:57Speaker 2: of years, are going to go look for the outside man,
- 31:00Speaker 2: the outside of the organization for a manager. We need, quote,
- 31:02Speaker 2: we need fresh thought. We need something new. Major League
- 31:06Speaker 2: Baseball managerial experience is, quote, not a prerequisite, but preferred.
- 31:11Speaker 2: It is preferred. Mariners principal John Stanton had an interview
- 31:15Speaker 2: with King 5's Paul Silvey in a TV exclusive yesterday
- 31:19Speaker 2: from T-Mobile Park. Here's what John Stanton said about the
- 31:23Speaker 2: ownership's commitment to winning a World Series.
- 31:25Speaker 1: I'm sure you hear the outside noise. You try to
- 31:27Speaker 1: block it out sometimes, but people come at you and
- 31:29Speaker 1: they say, you know, sell the team and be more
- 31:32Speaker 1: aggressive out there and act like you want to win
- 31:36Speaker 1: and do something about winning.
- 31:37Speaker 5: Like, when you hear all that.
- 31:38Speaker 11: Stuff, because you have to hear it, what's your response
- 31:42Speaker 11: to that?
- 31:43Speaker 12: Well, I guess I hear that. Selling a team is
- 31:49Speaker 12: inherently a risky proposition. in that you don't know what
- 31:52Speaker 12: the interest of the new owner will be. We're committed
- 31:55Speaker 12: to owning the team. This is now the ownership group,
- 31:59Speaker 12: I think, is the second or third longest-serving ownership group
- 32:02Speaker 12: in baseball, and we're committed to staying here. We're also
- 32:06Speaker 12: committed to winning, and the only way I can prove
- 32:09Speaker 12: that is by us winning and continuing to make commitments
- 32:13Speaker 12: like increasing the payroll each of the last five years,
- 32:16Speaker 12: being willing to trade and pick up important players, that
- 32:19Speaker 12: we think will make a difference. Luis Castillo made a
- 32:22Speaker 12: huge difference for us for four years, and we're appreciative
- 32:25Speaker 12: of that. Josh Naylor makes a big difference. We picked
- 32:29Speaker 12: him up at the trade deadline and then signed him
- 32:32Speaker 12: to an extension. We've done that in a number of cases,
- 32:36Speaker 12: and from our point of view, our commitment to winning
- 32:41Speaker 12: and our commitment to continuing to win and to make
- 32:43Speaker 12: changes when necessary in order to win is the best
- 32:47Speaker 12: evidence I can offer that we are committed. Payroll is
- 32:52Speaker 12: related to success. It is not the reason for success.
- 32:57Speaker 2: That's John Stanton, the principal owner of two dozen owners
- 33:01Speaker 2: of the Mariners who are profiting in the top half
- 33:03Speaker 2: of the league while spending on player payroll in the
- 33:06Speaker 2: bottom half of the league. He said, quote, John Stanton said, quote,
- 33:10Speaker 2: we are committed to winning. And he cited increasing the
- 33:13Speaker 2: payroll for each of the last five years. Well, there
- 33:16Speaker 2: are their profits have gone up and revenues have gone
- 33:19Speaker 2: up each of the last five years as well. And
- 33:22Speaker 2: they get luxury tax revenues from teams like the Dodgers
- 33:24Speaker 2: and the Yankees and the Cubs that spend above the
- 33:27Speaker 2: threshold that the Mariners are below. And those luxury tax
- 33:30Speaker 2: revenues go up each year too. So yeah, you could
- 33:34Speaker 2: say technically they've increased payroll, but just like in the
- 33:38Speaker 2: NFL and the salary cap goes up every year. So
- 33:40Speaker 2: you pay more for players, same in major league baseball,
- 33:42Speaker 2: your revenues go up, your luxury tax revenues go up,
- 33:44Speaker 2: the luxury tax payments from the Halves at the top
- 33:47Speaker 2: of the league go up. So, yeah, I hope you're
- 33:51Speaker 2: increasing player payroll while pocketing the extra revenue. But the
- 33:55Speaker 2: fact is they aren't making the splash moves. Maybe they
- 33:59Speaker 2: can't make the splash move. This might be related to
- 34:01Speaker 2: the manager. Who are you going to bring here to
- 34:03Speaker 2: be a player in this situation in Seattle? The park,
- 34:06Speaker 2: the whole perception of marine layer, of being a hitter
- 34:11Speaker 2: unfriendly park, and now the organization getting a new manager.
- 34:14Speaker 2: They don't know who that is. Not exactly right for
- 34:16Speaker 2: bringing in the top free agent on the market this winter.
- 34:19Speaker 2: Not to mention the fact there may be a lockout
- 34:21Speaker 2: December 1st.
- 34:22Speaker 3: There's a lot.
- 34:24Speaker 4: I know that Jerry DiPoto also addressed that because he
- 34:27Speaker 4: was asked about it. And they're operating as though 2027
- 34:30Speaker 4: will happen.
- 34:31Speaker 2: And he has to.
- 34:32Speaker 3: You have to.
- 34:32Speaker 2: Right. And when free agency begins in December, he has
- 34:35Speaker 2: to operate that way. But when free agency begins in December,
- 34:37Speaker 2: there may be a player lockout. On top of everything
- 34:40Speaker 2: else the Mariners are dealing with, there's that. Four, nine, four, five, one.
- 34:44Speaker 2: Your thoughts on hearing from the president of baseball operations
- 34:47Speaker 2: and the chairman principal owner of the Mariners. They're back
- 34:50Speaker 2: to back. Does it make you feel better? Worse? I,
- 34:55Speaker 2: you know, listening to Jerry DePoto, I know people said
- 34:58Speaker 2: he was contrite and you said he was nervous, but
- 35:02Speaker 2: the words, it did in person. I'm sure it did.
- 35:04Speaker 2: But the words sound like the same words from the
- 35:07Speaker 2: last 11 years. When he asked about failing this year,
- 35:11Speaker 2: he said, well, you had the best, One of the
- 35:13Speaker 2: best one-loss records in Major League Baseball for five years.
- 35:16Speaker 2: He had to toot his own horn there before he
- 35:17Speaker 2: started talking about this year's failure.
- 35:20Speaker 5: I don't know, man.
- 35:22Speaker 2: Again, I go back to the baseball operations need to change,
- 35:25Speaker 2: and the president of baseball operations is going to go
- 35:27Speaker 2: in for his 12th consecutive year. So how are the
- 35:30Speaker 2: baseball operations going to change when the guy in charge
- 35:32Speaker 2: of the operations is the same? 49451, we'll be back
- 35:36Speaker 2: to your text at 1130. The 1135 will do factor fiction.
- 35:38Speaker 2: Your chance to win $ 1, 000 from the Emerald Queen Casino
- 35:41Speaker 2: Betting Hammer Queen Casino was in the prior contest. This
- 35:46Speaker 2: is the Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel. I was doing
- 35:48Speaker 2: it like rote automatic there. Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel
- 35:53Speaker 2: sponsors our chance to win $ 1, 000 weekly, $ 10, 000 in the
- 35:57Speaker 2: contest that ends December 11th. Up next, we'll go back
- 36:00Speaker 2: to the Seahawks and what Mike McDonald had to say
- 36:03Speaker 2: yesterday about Jadarian Price's fumble problems, about Julian Love's injury,
- 36:06Speaker 2: about Nick Emanwuri, how they need to move around the
- 36:08Speaker 2: defense more. about Josh Jobe, about Trevon Diggs. Yeah, remember him?
- 36:13Speaker 2: You'll hear from Mike McDonald. We'll talk about the Seahawks
- 36:16Speaker 2: next on 93.3 KJRFM. Welcome back. Greg Bell and Justin
- 36:31Speaker 2: McIntyre with you on 93.3 KJFM. Jory Epstein does her
- 36:35Speaker 2: weekly visit with us around the NFL, the senior NFL
- 36:38Speaker 2: writer for Yahoo Sports at 11 o'clock. Brought to you
- 36:40Speaker 2: by Zeke's Pizza, a factor fiction, 11.35, your chance to
- 36:43Speaker 2: win $ 1, 000 from Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel. Just to
- 36:46Speaker 2: summarize what people thought on the text line of hearing
- 36:49Speaker 2: Jerry Lopoto and John Stanton, the 206 said, listening to
- 36:52Speaker 2: Jerry and John talk was so painful. Kind of summarizes that.
- 36:58Speaker 2: The bulk of the comments there. To the Seahawks, they
- 37:01Speaker 2: have the Chargers. 0-3 Chargers coming in to Lumen Field
- 37:04Speaker 2: on Sunday. Jim Harbaugh got a quarterback problem with a sub-60%
- 37:09Speaker 2: passing quarterback who's 30th in the league in passer rating.
- 37:14Speaker 2: That's Justin Herbert. The Seahawks, though, have some own issues themselves.
- 37:17Speaker 2: One of them is Jedardian Price's fumbles. The rookie running
- 37:21Speaker 2: back benched in Washington after a fumble on his third
- 37:24Speaker 2: carry four minutes into the game. sat in a raincoat
- 37:27Speaker 2: for much of the first half, only had two carries
- 37:29Speaker 2: the rest of the day after that fumble early in
- 37:31Speaker 2: the first quarter. This is what Mike McDonald had to
- 37:34Speaker 2: say in his vote of confidence for the rookie first-round
- 37:36Speaker 2: pick yesterday.
- 37:37Speaker 8: With your offensive running game yesterday, how much of it,
- 37:39Speaker 8: I guess, do you look at was Washington's a really
- 37:41Speaker 8: good defense versus things you guys could have done better?
- 37:44Speaker 8: And then just with Zidarian as well, when you looked
- 37:46Speaker 8: at his fumble, just kind of what you saw there
- 37:49Speaker 8: and what's the teaching point there?
- 37:52Speaker 5: It's both.
- 37:53Speaker 2: Credit to Washington.
- 37:54Speaker 6: Did a great job.
- 37:56Speaker 7: And also we feel like there's plenty of room to grow.
- 38:00Speaker 7: So I think it's a function of in real time
- 38:06Speaker 7: execution and also finding solutions as the game goes. Also
- 38:09Speaker 7: the way the game was going of some things we
- 38:12Speaker 7: wanted to be able to do offensively in the pass
- 38:14Speaker 7: game and in the screen game. So I think it's
- 38:18Speaker 7: a process thing. I think we stick to our process. Really,
- 38:22Speaker 7: with our whole team right now, the message after the
- 38:24Speaker 7: game was I think we'd feel the same way after
- 38:26Speaker 7: the game, whether or not we closed it out and
- 38:29Speaker 7: found a way to win or the way it shook out. Really,
- 38:34Speaker 7: every tentacle from coming out of the game of where
- 38:38Speaker 7: can we grow, how can we make our process better,
- 38:40Speaker 7: that's been the mentality every day, or today at least.
- 38:45Speaker 6: With JD, he understands what's going on. He needs to
- 38:48Speaker 6: take care of the ball.
- 38:49Speaker 7: I think there's some things fundamentally where We can focus
- 38:52Speaker 7: on and we're going to continue giving the ball.
- 38:55Speaker 6: We trust him.
- 38:56Speaker 7: And we know he's going to work really hard to
- 38:58Speaker 7: do his part as well.
- 39:00Speaker 2: We're going to continue giving him the ball. We trust him.
- 39:02Speaker 2: Jadarian Price told me in the locker room in Maryland
- 39:04Speaker 2: on Sunday, I got to think more about holding onto
- 39:06Speaker 2: the ball instead of trying to gain extra yards. It's
- 39:08Speaker 2: a mindset thing I got to change. Julian Love missed
- 39:10Speaker 2: the Washington game. Calf injury in practice last week on Thursday.
- 39:14Speaker 2: Will he play against the Chargers on Sunday at deep safety?
- 39:17Speaker 2: They really missed him. Had two practice squad safeties starting
- 39:20Speaker 2: deep instead. McDonald said Love quote is day-to-day. We'll see
- 39:24Speaker 2: if he practices on Wednesday or Thursday of this week.
- 39:27Speaker 2: Nicky Manwari played up on the line of scrimmage for
- 39:29Speaker 2: the defense. on 52 of the defensive snaps a week
- 39:33Speaker 2: after a season debut of just nine snaps in arizona
- 39:36Speaker 2: that's still 52 far below his norm mcdonald said it's
- 39:39Speaker 2: time to move around the defense from front to back
- 39:42Speaker 2: like they used them so well last season.
- 39:44Speaker 7: Thought nick had a good game um there's some really
- 39:46Speaker 7: great plays uh it'll continue to get better. I think,
- 39:51Speaker 7: I think he should be really proud of how he's
- 39:54Speaker 7: approached last week mentally. I think that's one of the
- 39:56Speaker 7: things to answer. Brian's question is something that we want
- 39:58Speaker 7: to discuss as a staff of just, you know, what,
- 40:01Speaker 7: what the process is every week of, of how, how, where,
- 40:04Speaker 7: and how often he plays. And so we can have
- 40:07Speaker 7: a really focused game plan because where he plays really
- 40:11Speaker 7: affects the position group around him because he's playing out
- 40:13Speaker 7: of really three position groups. So that's something that we'll
- 40:17Speaker 7: continue to, think about and make better, but he's, he's
- 40:20Speaker 7: done a great job.
- 40:22Speaker 2: That tells me the Nick Amon worry experience is returning
- 40:25Speaker 2: on Sunday against the chargers. He's had his two games
- 40:27Speaker 2: back half stepping a little half speed, a little bit
- 40:30Speaker 2: got taken out in third down situations. Look for him
- 40:32Speaker 2: to be on the line as a hybrid Sam linebacker
- 40:35Speaker 2: back in the secondary, a little bit, everything like he
- 40:38Speaker 2: was just messing up offenses last season. Expect that starting Sunday.
- 40:42Speaker 2: from Nicky Manwari now that he's two games back from
- 40:44Speaker 2: his ankle surgery. Josh Joe's had a tough time covering
- 40:48Speaker 2: Terry McLaurin on Sunday, including a touchdown catch that spun
- 40:51Speaker 2: him around in the end zone. McDonald said again that
- 40:54Speaker 2: the coaches love Joe and that a lot of guys
- 40:56Speaker 2: in the league have trouble covering McLaurin. Doesn't sound like
- 40:59Speaker 2: McDonald's thinking about Trevon Diggs taking Joe's outside cornerback job.
- 41:04Speaker 2: Remember Diggs? 2021 All-Pro cornerback. Signed him late in August.
- 41:09Speaker 2: They were spinning him up, getting him football ready and
- 41:11Speaker 2: defense ready. McDonald said yesterday, yeah, he's becoming an option now.
- 41:16Speaker 2: He's ready to go, and he's past that ramp-up period physically.
- 41:19Speaker 2: So he didn't say, though, that you're going to see
- 41:23Speaker 2: Trevon Diggs on Sunday. He's still on the practice squad,
- 41:25Speaker 2: and he professed his faith in Josh Jobe. If you
- 41:28Speaker 2: missed any of that, my story is at thenewstribune.com. I'm
- 41:31Speaker 2: like McDonald's comments yesterday. Up next, we're going to go
- 41:34Speaker 2: around the NFL with Jory Epstein. She's our weekly guest
- 41:37Speaker 2: from Yahoo Sports, senior NFL writer based in New York.
- 41:40Speaker 2: She comes to us thanks to Zeke's Pizza and Zeke'sPizza.com
- 41:43Speaker 2: next on 93.3 KJR FM.
- 41:55Speaker 1: It's time for Greg's weekly visit with Yahoo Sports senior
- 41:58Speaker 1: NFL reporter Jory Epstein. Brought to you by Zeke's Pizza.
- 42:03Speaker 1: Stop by Zeke's all season long when a team from
- 42:05Speaker 1: Washington is playing and enjoys $ 6 Kraft Pints. And for
- 42:09Speaker 1: some serious kick, try the new Calabrian Chili Pizza.
- 42:13Speaker 2: Out now.
- 42:14Speaker 1: Now with Jory Epstein.
- 42:16Speaker 2: Here's Greg. Look at that. Jory's in the Glamour Bites
- 42:22Speaker 2: big city, New York. Look at you. You made it.
- 42:25Speaker 2: Made it big with the sponsor.
- 42:26Speaker 13: Yeah, that is a fancy open. Look at that. Thanks
- 42:30Speaker 13: to Zeke's Pizza.
- 42:31Speaker 2: Thanks to Zeke's Pizza. Zeke'sPizza.com, where they have gluten-free pizza
- 42:35Speaker 2: for Jory if she gets back to Seattle sometime. She
- 42:39Speaker 2: cutely sent me a picture of her jogging by downtown
- 42:42Speaker 2: Zeke's location in anticipation that they would pick her up
- 42:45Speaker 2: again as our sponsor for our weekly tour around the
- 42:48Speaker 2: NFL when Jory was out here for the Seahawks opener
- 42:51Speaker 2: against the Patriots. Since then, they've gone one and one.
- 42:55Speaker 2: They lost at Washington. And, Jory, my first question to you,
- 42:59Speaker 2: thanks for being on the show again, from New York City,
- 43:02Speaker 2: was what you thought of Marcus Mariota and the commanders
- 43:05Speaker 2: taking down the champs. What did you learn about maybe
- 43:07Speaker 2: Mariota and Washington?
- 43:10Speaker 14: You know, my favorite stat that I've seen about this
- 43:12Speaker 14: so far is from Josh Deboe of the Associated Press.
- 43:15Speaker 14: who put that teams that have started a different quarterback
- 43:19Speaker 14: than week one.
- 43:19Speaker 13: Are 6-0 so far this season.
- 43:22Speaker 14: So it's worth noting that some of those teams weren't
- 43:24Speaker 14: starting their presumed start at first, but you've got Case
- 43:27Speaker 14: Keenum last night with the Bears, you've got Marcus Mariota
- 43:30Speaker 14: against Seattle, Drew Locke, of course, getting his win, Jameis Winston,
- 43:34Speaker 14: Michael Penix Jr.
- 43:34Speaker 13: Kyler Murray. So while it probably doesn't feel great to
- 43:38Speaker 13: lose to the.
- 43:38Speaker 14: Backup team, The Seahawks are not particularly unique in that fashion,
- 43:42Speaker 14: even through three weeks. So, I mean, the commanders wanted
- 43:45Speaker 14: Marcus Mariota to be their backup for many reasons, including
- 43:48Speaker 14: that his style is similar to Jaden Daniels, even if
- 43:51Speaker 14: it's not necessarily at the same ceiling right now, Jaden Daniels.
- 43:56Speaker 14: And so you kind of have this element of they
- 43:58Speaker 14: didn't have to totally change the playbook. And particularly when
- 44:01Speaker 14: you get the help of some takeaways from your defense,
- 44:03Speaker 14: I understand how Washington was able.
- 44:05Speaker 5: To do this.
- 44:07Speaker 2: Staying in the NFC West, Rams are now 1-2, so
- 44:09Speaker 2: I guess they're not going undefeated after all, huh? They're
- 44:12Speaker 2: not the dream team of the best team ever. But
- 44:15Speaker 2: first of all, I wanted to ask you, what did
- 44:18Speaker 2: you think of the pass interference call and the penalty
- 44:20Speaker 2: that completely changed the game and gave Denver its winning points?
- 44:25Speaker 13: Yeah, I mean, like, is it my favorite call?
- 44:27Speaker 5: No.
- 44:27Speaker 14: Do I think NBC rules analyst, former official Terry McCauley,
- 44:31Speaker 14: broke it down well when he explained why he did
- 44:33Speaker 14: not believe it was pass interference? Sure, but I think
- 44:36Speaker 14: it's kind of in that range where Pat.
- 44:38Speaker 13: Bryant or C. Ron Place sold it well. It's an
- 44:40Speaker 13: unlucky break for the Rams, but I.
- 44:42Speaker 14: Don't think of that as the reason the Rams lost
- 44:44Speaker 14: the game, and I don't think Sean McVay is going
- 44:46Speaker 14: in there with his team this week saying, hey, if
- 44:48Speaker 14: it weren't for that, we would have been fine and
- 44:50Speaker 14: everything else we did well, you know?
- 44:51Speaker 7: Right.
- 44:52Speaker 2: They were up 16-0. I mean, 16-0 is a half,
- 44:54Speaker 2: if I remember. So, yeah, they have themselves to blame
- 44:57Speaker 2: for that. While we're on the Rams, I'm going to
- 44:59Speaker 2: ask you a journalism question. You and I have been
- 45:01Speaker 2: in this situation many times where the game's ending. You
- 45:04Speaker 2: have to file as soon as the game ends. People
- 45:06Speaker 2: don't realize that. They think we just watch the game,
- 45:08Speaker 2: eat popcorn, and then go downstairs and start asking questions.
- 45:11Speaker 2: We're jamming out a running story that goes right when
- 45:13Speaker 2: the game ends. And sometimes when the game ends right
- 45:15Speaker 2: at the end, that story, especially the dumb Broncos-Rams game
- 45:18Speaker 2: the other night, You're going to write for five or
- 45:20Speaker 2: ten minutes after the game ends and try to write
- 45:22Speaker 2: something that's legible. And then you get downstairs. I mean,
- 45:26Speaker 2: Sean McVay and Artie Twyman, who used to be with
- 45:29Speaker 2: the Seahawks PR and now the PR director for the Rams,
- 45:31Speaker 2: they know the deal and they know the writers are
- 45:33Speaker 2: up there. I know there's a mini controversy about all that.
- 45:39Speaker 2: McVay apologized yesterday for not being there when the Rams
- 45:42Speaker 2: beat writers came in. But your whole take on all that.
- 45:47Speaker 14: Yeah, I actually haven't seen the apology from McVeigh, which
- 45:49Speaker 14: I think, okay, I'm not looking at it. I'm glad
- 45:53Speaker 14: that McVeigh said that because I felt like for a
- 45:57Speaker 14: reporter to tweet publicly on McVeigh's not speaking. I don't
- 46:01Speaker 14: know that that's the best option in terms of how
- 46:03Speaker 14: to handle it. I probably would have tried to instead
- 46:05Speaker 14: go to PR or to McVeigh and get another question.
- 46:08Speaker 13: I also think for PR to say publicly, if you.
- 46:11Speaker 14: Wait until the end of the game in the press box,
- 46:13Speaker 14: you don't get to talk to your coach. I wouldn't
- 46:15Speaker 14: recommend that if the PR staff was asking me. Because, look,
- 46:19Speaker 14: as a national reporter, I often don't have something at
- 46:22Speaker 14: the buzzer when my colleague says that. And so I
- 46:23Speaker 14: do often go down early to try and capture that.
- 46:26Speaker 14: scene of players coming off the field. But to suggest,
- 46:29Speaker 14: especially in today's world where reporters no longer have the
- 46:32Speaker 14: ability to be on the sideline in those last five minutes.
- 46:35Speaker 14: So if you want to watch the game again, I'll
- 46:37Speaker 14: watch it on the broadcast on my phone. But if
- 46:38Speaker 14: you want to watch the game live and if someone
- 46:41Speaker 14: gets injured, you got to be in the press box.
- 46:43Speaker 14: And so to suggest that you can't do that if
- 46:46Speaker 14: you want to talk to the head coach i think
- 46:48Speaker 14: is really disingenuous like they're also pr is also not
- 46:50Speaker 14: going to like it if you go down early in
- 46:52Speaker 14: those five minutes and you miss a major injury and
- 46:54Speaker 14: then you ask a head coach a question about the
- 46:56Speaker 14: game you're presumably at to cover so i think we
- 46:59Speaker 14: should all have a little humility here like yes there
- 47:01Speaker 14: are logistics of working in a stadium some will be
- 47:03Speaker 14: easier than others but why don't we try and work
- 47:05Speaker 14: together in part i i'm amazed at some of the
- 47:07Speaker 14: rules of these stadiums the one that drove me crazy
- 47:09Speaker 14: week one this year was not in seattle but was
- 47:12Speaker 14: when i went to monday night kansas city I hadn't
- 47:15Speaker 14: been to that stadium in probably three or four years,
- 47:17Speaker 14: and it was in the playoffs at the time. And
- 47:19Speaker 14: so I didn't know where to enter for Patrick Mahomes
- 47:23Speaker 14: speaking at the podium, which was obviously huge for my
- 47:26Speaker 14: job because it's his first game back from injury, he's won, etc.
- 47:29Speaker 14: So I start walking where Patrick is walking, figuring there's
- 47:32Speaker 14: one door like most places. Turns out, and they're like, no,
- 47:34Speaker 14: you have to go to the other door. I go
- 47:36Speaker 14: back around, and they're like, well, now that Patrick is in,
- 47:39Speaker 14: you're not allowed to walk in because it will disrupt
- 47:41Speaker 14: the press conference. I'm like, He has not started talking.
- 47:44Speaker 14: And I was just fuming there, Greg. And I'm like
- 47:46Speaker 14: a pretty level-headed person. But I was watching through double-pane glass.
- 47:49Speaker 14: I couldn't hear what Patrick was saying, but I could
- 47:51Speaker 14: watch him for like, it felt like 30 minutes. I
- 47:54Speaker 14: think it was nine minutes just watching him talk. And
- 47:56Speaker 14: I was like, how disrespectful should I be to just
- 47:58Speaker 14: go past the stadium person?
- 47:59Speaker 13: But I didn't want to do that.
- 48:00Speaker 14: But yes, all I wish is to say we all
- 48:02Speaker 14: have our gripes on this front and I am not
- 48:06Speaker 14: without them.
- 48:07Speaker 2: It reminds me that I have gotten into the Pentagon
- 48:10Speaker 2: more easily than I've gotten into NFL stadiums and team facilities.
- 48:13Speaker 2: That is a fact in my former Army life. I
- 48:15Speaker 2: like the flex, by the way. I like your flex,
- 48:18Speaker 2: by the way, saying I no longer have to write
- 48:20Speaker 2: running game stories. I leave that to the peons, the
- 48:22Speaker 2: beat writers. I don't do that stuff anymore.
- 48:24Speaker 3: She didn't use the word peon. She said colleague.
- 48:28Speaker 14: Yeah, my colleague does do that, who's a national reporter,
- 48:31Speaker 14: but he's much better at turning things quickly than I am.
- 48:33Speaker 13: So they're like, we don't really want to deal with
- 48:35Speaker 13: your story, Jory. But yes, sure.
- 48:38Speaker 2: The Eagles last night just got bushwhacked by the Bears
- 48:41Speaker 2: starting a third-string quarterback. The Eagles, they got the Rams
- 48:45Speaker 2: coming into Philadelphia this week. Anything concerning last night from
- 48:49Speaker 2: the Eagles? They didn't run the ball very well. Hurts
- 48:53Speaker 2: couldn't move them, and the Chicago defense dominated, and now
- 48:57Speaker 2: McVay's one and two Rams come to Philadelphia. Is there
- 48:59Speaker 2: any concern with you with the Eagles?
- 49:02Speaker 13: I mean, they're still two and one, and it's one game.
- 49:05Speaker 14: I think To me, I'm more impressed with Ben Johnson's
- 49:08Speaker 14: play calling for Case Keenum than I am concerned about
- 49:11Speaker 14: the Eagles' defense.
- 49:14Speaker 13: Jalen Hurts, okay, did he have his best game? Obviously not.
- 49:16Speaker 14: But early on in the game, things that hurt the
- 49:18Speaker 14: Eagles weren't really Jalen Hurts. It was more, well, you've
- 49:21Speaker 14: got to fumble. Well, Jalen Hurts didn't fumble. Tank Biggsby fumbled.
- 49:24Speaker 14: Then you say, well, there's an interception. Well, that was
- 49:26Speaker 14: Andy Dalton when Jalen Hurts had to go get it
- 49:28Speaker 14: checked for a concussion. So Um, I mean, you would
- 49:33Speaker 14: hope that your defense can do better against a third
- 49:35Speaker 14: string quarterback than the Eagles did. But I also am
- 49:38Speaker 14: curious how much the Eagles prepared, not necessarily for another quarterback.
- 49:42Speaker 14: Cause I know that Tyson agent had the concussion during
- 49:44Speaker 14: the week, but maybe they prepared for a different style
- 49:46Speaker 14: of play because Ben Johnson did switch up his playbook
- 49:49Speaker 14: pretty significantly for case Keenum and not ask him to
- 49:52Speaker 14: do too much the way that Caleb has these big,
- 49:54Speaker 14: crazy plays. So I thought it was really well coached
- 49:57Speaker 14: by Chicago. If you're asking, does Philadelphia think something's wrong?
- 50:00Speaker 14: Philadelphia always thinks something's wrong. And I will note that
- 50:04Speaker 14: I guess Jalen Hurts did have the interception later, I
- 50:06Speaker 14: should say, but he didn't, he wasn't originally the problem.
- 50:09Speaker 14: What's interesting to me is that this really is more
- 50:13Speaker 14: of an anticipatory offense than the Eagles have had of late.
- 50:16Speaker 14: And I think that there's kind of just this element of,
- 50:19Speaker 14: are you.
- 50:19Speaker 13: Guys on the same page?
- 50:20Speaker 14: I thought Saquon looked a little bit better than we've
- 50:22Speaker 14: seen from him late, but yeah, Clearly, as a whole,
- 50:24Speaker 14: the operation was pretty off, and it seemed like the
- 50:27Speaker 14: further they got in a hole, the more trouble they
- 50:29Speaker 14: were having kind.
- 50:30Speaker 13: Of playing it safe, playing it slow, rather than getting
- 50:33Speaker 13: ahead of themselves.
- 50:35Speaker 2: The Rams go to the Eagles this week in a game.
- 50:37Speaker 2: A lot of people in the Northwest will be keeping
- 50:38Speaker 2: an eye on because the Rams have a chance of
- 50:40Speaker 2: going one and three. The greatest team ever assembled that
- 50:43Speaker 2: was going to win the Super Bowl in March could
- 50:45Speaker 2: be 1-3 after the road trip east this week. Giants
- 50:48Speaker 2: are 2-1. Is that John Harbaugh? Is that Jameis Winston?
- 50:52Speaker 2: Is it because they played the Cowboys and the Titans?
- 50:54Speaker 2: What do you assess the Giants for?
- 50:56Speaker 14: I feel like I can't talk about the Giants season
- 51:00Speaker 14: so far in one bucket because every single game has
- 51:03Speaker 14: been completely different reasons for why these outcomes came. I
- 51:06Speaker 14: think they wouldn't want to know because John Harbaugh and
- 51:10Speaker 14: Jackson Dart and their play callers and Matt Nagy and
- 51:13Speaker 14: Greg Roman and the crew put together a really effective
- 51:16Speaker 14: game plan and looked really efficient on offense and opportunistic
- 51:19Speaker 14: on defense.
- 51:19Speaker 13: I think then you go to week two, obviously they
- 51:22Speaker 13: had the.
- 51:22Speaker 14: Loss, but their win against the Titans was much more
- 51:26Speaker 14: About the weather, it was a nor'easter up here, and
- 51:28Speaker 14: so you kind of have the, like, let's just run
- 51:30Speaker 14: the ball and not turn it over, and hey, we
- 51:32Speaker 14: actually didn't really score touchdowns, but what if we just
- 51:34Speaker 14: get the field goals?
- 51:35Speaker 13: That'll be good enough.
- 51:36Speaker 14: And then also playing against the Titans. But I think
- 51:39Speaker 14: the Giants know perfectly well that the recipe they used
- 51:43Speaker 14: to beat the Titans is not going to give them
- 51:45Speaker 14: wins most likely. And they now are going to be
- 51:47Speaker 14: without Brian Burns, their top pass rusher for the rest
- 51:50Speaker 14: of the season with a torn ACL. So you basically
- 51:52Speaker 14: lost your most important player on offense and defense. Although
- 51:54Speaker 14: I will say credit to Javon Holland, because I believe
- 51:58Speaker 14: he's had an interception. Yes, he has in every single
- 52:00Speaker 14: game so far, in addition to forcing.
- 52:03Speaker 13: Two fumbles.
- 52:04Speaker 14: So that's pretty good. Five takeaways in three games.
- 52:07Speaker 2: Player of the month candidate here in the NFC.
- 52:09Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 52:10Speaker 2: So JJ McCarthy, the guy who, the reason why Sam
- 52:14Speaker 2: Donald is with the Seahawks is JJ McCarthy. The Vikings
- 52:17Speaker 2: chose him because the GM there, his job, but the
- 52:20Speaker 2: Vikings chose a young JJ McCarthy after the knee surgery
- 52:24Speaker 2: and return over Darnold. And then the Vikings give up
- 52:28Speaker 2: on McCarthy and trade him to the giants is Jameis
- 52:30Speaker 2: Winston looking over his shoulder. Do you think, or, That's
- 52:33Speaker 2: just an insurance move.
- 52:36Speaker 14: Yeah, I'm glad you asked because I initially was not
- 52:38Speaker 14: super high on this move because I think that JJ
- 52:41Speaker 14: is a young quarterback. He's coming in the middle of
- 52:43Speaker 14: the season, doesn't know the terminology, doesn't have experience with
- 52:45Speaker 14: the weapons. And if you're not the first string quarterback,
- 52:50Speaker 14: you rarely get any snaps during the season with the
- 52:52Speaker 14: first string because there's just so few snaps to go
- 52:55Speaker 14: around once you get to the regular season. But when
- 52:57Speaker 14: I talked to sources from five different NFL teams yesterday,
- 53:01Speaker 14: they actually said, told a different story and kind of
- 53:03Speaker 14: this twofold reason why they understood.
- 53:05Speaker 13: The first is from a schematic.
- 53:08Speaker 14: Standpoint, the same way we were talking about Mariota being
- 53:10Speaker 14: a good schematic replacement for Jaden Daniels, Jameis Winston is
- 53:14Speaker 14: big and strong and has a big arm, but he's
- 53:16Speaker 14: not got that dual threat, his own read, some of
- 53:19Speaker 14: the run pass option, all of that, that Jackson Dart had.
- 53:22Speaker 14: And so I think the Giants really wanted someone who
- 53:24Speaker 14: schematically allowed them to focus more on the emphasis of
- 53:27Speaker 14: their playbook. I'm not suggesting that they can't scheme for
- 53:30Speaker 14: Jameis Winston or that they don't have different elements. But
- 53:33Speaker 14: I think that in order to do what they do
- 53:36Speaker 14: best and really use guys like Isaiah Likely and some
- 53:38Speaker 14: of that, they need a quarterback who can lean more
- 53:40Speaker 14: into that. And then from a price standpoint, there's the
- 53:43Speaker 14: element of they got him for a fifth round pick.
- 53:46Speaker 14: And it's pretty rare three years after a guy is
- 53:48Speaker 14: drafted in the top 10 to be able to get
- 53:51Speaker 14: him for a fifth round pick. And it's not a
- 53:54Speaker 14: super expensive move. I think the closest comp I found
- 53:57Speaker 14: in recent years was when the Niners traded Trey Lance
- 54:00Speaker 14: to the Cowboys.
- 54:02Speaker 13: Year three for a fourth round pick.
- 54:04Speaker 14: But oftentimes it's much more expensive than that if the
- 54:06Speaker 14: guy has done anything right.
- 54:07Speaker 13: So now you're the Vikings who say, okay, we got value.
- 54:10Speaker 13: The Giants, you didn't pay a whole lot. As it
- 54:12Speaker 13: relates to.
- 54:13Speaker 14: Will we see him and should Jameis Winston be looking
- 54:15Speaker 14: around the corner?
- 54:16Speaker 13: I think yes. We're not seeing him this week.
- 54:19Speaker 14: John Harbaugh made very clear that Jameis Winston is, or
- 54:22Speaker 14: he's not gonna be a starter, I should say.
- 54:23Speaker 13: Jameis Winston is starting this week against the Arizona Cardinals.
- 54:26Speaker 13: As it relates to after that, John Harbaugh did his.
- 54:29Speaker 14: Whole, well, I can't see more in the future than
- 54:31Speaker 14: this week. So all I could tell you is Jameis
- 54:33Speaker 14: is starting this week. But if he felt like Jameis
- 54:35Speaker 14: was going to be the starter for four weeks, I
- 54:37Speaker 14: think he would have said Jameis is our starter. And instead,
- 54:40Speaker 14: he made very clear, like, for the future, as far
- 54:42Speaker 14: as I can see it, which is only this week.
- 54:45Speaker 14: So I think this is a question of how... How
- 54:49Speaker 14: quickly does JJ McCarthy get up to speed on a
- 54:51Speaker 14: new system? He does have the mobility that Jackson Dart has,
- 54:53Speaker 14: so that's good. But then you also have to ask yourself,
- 54:57Speaker 14: even if he gets the opportunity, I never root for
- 54:59Speaker 14: a player to get hurt, but JJ McCarthy missed his
- 55:01Speaker 14: entire rookie year and seven more games last season for
- 55:04Speaker 14: like four different injuries across that time.
- 55:06Speaker 13: So you should keep Jameis Winston close.
- 55:08Speaker 14: By and, Even if you start JJ McCarthy, because history
- 55:12Speaker 14: doesn't suggest that we should feel confident he's able to
- 55:14Speaker 14: stay healthy.
- 55:15Speaker 2: Yeah, that's for sure. All kinds of injuries. Jessamyn, did
- 55:17Speaker 2: you notice the flex at the very beginning of Jory's,
- 55:19Speaker 2: another Jory flex there? Well, the five teams that I
- 55:22Speaker 2: talked to yesterday about this trade.
- 55:24Speaker 4: That sounds like a hard worker who's giving you the
- 55:26Speaker 4: inside scoop on a lot of different stories, Greg.
- 55:29Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 55:30Speaker 13: Frank, you know, gives Zeke's pizza its value.
- 55:36Speaker 2: You definitely are giving Zeke's pizza its value. This is
- 55:39Speaker 2: Jory Epstein, a senior NFL reporter from Yahoo Sports. It's
- 55:43Speaker 2: her weekly visit with us. Thanks to Zeke's Pizza and Zeke'sPizza.com.
- 55:47Speaker 2: All right, let's get back to now what the Seahawks
- 55:49Speaker 2: are facing this week. The Chargers, 0-3. When this schedule
- 55:53Speaker 2: came out, this looked like an early season test for Seattle.
- 55:55Speaker 2: And now a winless Charger team. Justin Herbert is under 60%. 59% passer.
- 56:02Speaker 2: He was a 66% career passer. He's the 30th ranked
- 56:07Speaker 2: NFL quarterback in passer rating on quarterbacks that have played
- 56:10Speaker 2: in multiple games this year. Three touchdowns, four Four interceptions against,
- 56:15Speaker 2: third most interceptions in the league with eight sacks in
- 56:17Speaker 2: three games. We've talked, I think you and I have talked,
- 56:21Speaker 2: I've talked to Farhan Lalji about how they lack, the
- 56:23Speaker 2: Chargers lack a big game receiver. They don't have a
- 56:26Speaker 2: Keenan Allen anymore. They have offensive line problems. What do
- 56:30Speaker 2: you think the Jim Harbaugh's go to get fixed? And
- 56:33Speaker 2: is this the week they get better in Seattle?
- 56:37Speaker 13: I mean, I don't think it's the week they get
- 56:39Speaker 13: better in Seattle.
- 56:40Speaker 14: I think you should watch for the takeaways because they
- 56:42Speaker 14: were very opportunistic against the Bills, even though they weren't
- 56:45Speaker 14: able to finish the game. But I think to me,
- 56:47Speaker 14: my concern is we were all very excited about the
- 56:51Speaker 14: Mike McDaniel, Justin Herbert pairing and by extension, the Mike McDaniel,
- 56:55Speaker 14: Jim Harbaugh pairing.
- 56:56Speaker 13: When I talk to people around the league, there is
- 56:58Speaker 13: kind of.
- 56:59Speaker 14: A question of do Jim Harbaugh and Mike McDaniel's schematic
- 57:02Speaker 14: philosophies really align? You have Harbaugh who's kind of like
- 57:06Speaker 14: a run the ball, slow the game down, keep other
- 57:08Speaker 14: teams from having it.
- 57:09Speaker 13: Also like very big, physical, tough.
- 57:11Speaker 14: And I'm not saying Mike McDaniel is not big, physical
- 57:13Speaker 14: and tough, but in Miami, he was much more leaning
- 57:15Speaker 14: into speed and finesse. And so I think if you
- 57:19Speaker 14: have those two systems and they're not fully working, if
- 57:22Speaker 14: they're winning, it doesn't matter. Like pretty much you give
- 57:24Speaker 14: them whichever they want. But once you start getting into
- 57:26Speaker 14: a hole like this, do you know that Jim Harbaugh
- 57:30Speaker 14: is going.
- 57:30Speaker 13: To let Mike McDaniel keep running what he wants?
- 57:32Speaker 14: And I think if Mike McDaniel thinks all the way
- 57:34Speaker 14: back to San Francisco and what he was doing under Shanahan,
- 57:37Speaker 14: there's more schematic, I guess, familiarity or similarities, I should say,
- 57:43Speaker 14: to what they were doing with then what.
- 57:44Speaker 13: Jim Harbaugh wants.
- 57:45Speaker 14: But in recent years, McDaniel has had different ideas. What
- 57:48Speaker 14: shocks me still is that Mike McDaniel's whole thing was
- 57:51Speaker 14: get the ball out quickly so that the offensive line
- 57:54Speaker 14: doesn't have to protect that long.
- 57:55Speaker 13: And I thought this would work better than it did.
- 57:57Speaker 13: So I'm very surprised.
- 57:58Speaker 14: And I also think that not only because they're the Chargers,
- 58:01Speaker 14: but also just when you look at NFL history, if
- 58:04Speaker 14: you have enough things not working between head coach, quarterback,
- 58:07Speaker 14: and play caller, it can get ugly pretty quickly.
- 58:10Speaker 2: So you see 0-4 for the Chargers in Seattle on Sunday?
- 58:14Speaker 5: I do. Okay.
- 58:16Speaker 2: Joy, this week ahead, are you in New York? Are
- 58:18Speaker 2: you staying home? Week four that begins on Thursday night
- 58:21Speaker 2: with a surprising 2-1 Cleveland Browns hosting the 2-1 Steelers.
- 58:25Speaker 2: Are you sticking around the homestead watching the games this weekend,
- 58:28Speaker 2: or where do you at it?
- 58:30Speaker 14: Yeah, we've got another week in New York, still getting
- 58:32Speaker 14: the lay of the land as all of the teams.
- 58:34Speaker 13: Show us who they are.
- 58:35Speaker 14: But I am fascinated to see what happens in the
- 58:38Speaker 14: Raiders-Chiefs game this week, because I think if the Raiders win...
- 58:42Speaker 14: They then would come to New England the following week
- 58:43Speaker 14: that I would anticipate going to Foxborough.
- 58:45Speaker 13: Not positive, but that is the tentative plan.
- 58:47Speaker 14: So we'll see if the Raiders can keep up this four,
- 58:51Speaker 14: keep 3-0, make it 4-0.
- 58:54Speaker 2: Against the Chiefs, the Clint Kubiaks. Man, Kubiak, you talk
- 58:58Speaker 2: about an instant culture change there in Las Vegas.
- 59:00Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 59:01Speaker 5: Wow.
- 59:02Speaker 2: Both over results so far, but now they get Pat
- 59:05Speaker 2: Mahomes this week. Joy, thanks a lot. We'll catch up
- 59:07Speaker 2: with you next week. Thanks to Zeke's Pizza. It's great
- 59:09Speaker 2: to talk to you again.
- 59:10Speaker 5: Thanks.
- 59:11Speaker 13: Greg, just been great to be on. I'll talk to
- 59:13Speaker 13: you next week.
- 59:14Speaker 2: Jory Epstein is the senior NFL reporter for Yahoo Sports.
- 59:17Speaker 2: She joins us every week. Thanks to Zeke's Pizza and Zeke'sPizza.com.
- 59:21Speaker 2: And she's saying that she senses a disconnect. People around
- 59:26Speaker 2: the league see a disconnect between Jim Harbaugh and The
- 59:29Speaker 2: overall culture of the team and Mike McDaniel, the Chargers
- 59:33Speaker 2: offensive play caller for Justin Herbert. And the results say
- 59:36Speaker 2: there is a disconnect. As I said, 0-3 with Herbert
- 59:39Speaker 2: the 30th ranked in passer rating coming into Seattle on Sunday.
- 59:43Speaker 2: She did make the good point, though, that they got
- 59:45Speaker 2: a lot of takeaways in Buffalo that kept that game close. Seahawks,
- 59:49Speaker 2: of course, just had three turnovers in Washington. That, of course,
- 59:53Speaker 2: will be the key to game on Sunday. A team
- 59:54Speaker 2: the Seahawks should win, should beat. Just don't give them
- 59:57Speaker 2: the ball. That's why they lost in Washington. 49451 on
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: the Tacoma Dodge text line. Your reaction to what Jory
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: had to say about the NFL. Your thoughts about the
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: Seahawks and Chargers on Sunday. The Seahawks saying we're giving
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: Jadarian Price the ball. Fumble or not, he's going to learn.
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: And we're going to give him the ball. Mike McDonald
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: said yesterday, we'll get your chance to be a part
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: of the show next. 1135 Factor Fiction. $ 1, 000 you could win.
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: Jessamyn's got an NFL pick coming up next on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 1:00:43Speaker 6: Hey there greg and jessamine.
- 1:00:48Speaker 15: They want me to watch the mlb playoffs but where's
- 1:00:54Speaker 15: my team where's my team they say root for someone
- 1:01:00Speaker 15: else but that's not my team that's not my.
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: Team because we suck And we fired everyone.
- 1:01:11Speaker 6: That's the Mariners.
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: They're not in.
- 1:01:16Speaker 11: I'm so sick of the argument that this team should
- 1:01:18Speaker 11: be in the playoffs. This team should not, and I repeat,
- 1:01:22Speaker 11: should not.
- 1:01:23Speaker 5: Be in the playoffs.
- 1:01:24Speaker 11: It showed how less talented the team was than everyone else,
- 1:01:29Speaker 11: even in our own division. Houston had more talent. Texas
- 1:01:32Speaker 11: had more talent. And the A's have so much young talent.
- 1:01:36Speaker 11: I would say the Mariners are lacking in all of that.
- 1:01:39Speaker 11: Young talent, exciting talent, stars. This team was garbage. And
- 1:01:45Speaker 11: it's a really, really bad thing to do by predicting
- 1:01:49Speaker 11: things on past results.
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: That is bad.
- 1:01:53Speaker 11: Predicting things on past results is not a good way
- 1:01:57Speaker 11: to look, guys. Last year was last year. Yeah, we
- 1:02:02Speaker 11: almost did that. We almost did that. This year, we
- 1:02:05Speaker 11: were not talented. We should not have gone to the
- 1:02:09Speaker 11: playoffs this year at all. Last year was last year.
- 1:02:12Speaker 11: This year, this year, not talented.
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: God, I hate this man.
- 1:02:16Speaker 11: Jerry just making up his tenure. I've had three different tenures.
- 1:02:21Speaker 11: My first tenure, I ate cereal. My second tenure, I
- 1:02:24Speaker 11: had lunch. And my third tenure, I'm going to have dinner.
- 1:02:27Speaker 11: That's not how it works, Jerry. You weren't hired again.
- 1:02:31Speaker 11: You've been hired by one organization for 12 straight years.
- 1:02:35Speaker 11: This is the same job, big boy. And if you
- 1:02:38Speaker 11: can't handle it, then get out and let someone younger
- 1:02:41Speaker 11: and better do it. Hey guys, John Stanton here, and
- 1:02:48Speaker 11: we're going to commit to winning by committing to you.
- 1:02:51Speaker 11: We're going to sit in our hands and we're going
- 1:02:52Speaker 11: to commit. And by showing winning, we're going to commit.
- 1:02:55Speaker 11: We're going to win by commit. And we're going to
- 1:02:57Speaker 11: sit here. Oh, guys, guess what? We can't sell to
- 1:03:00Speaker 11: someone because we just don't know how to sell. We
- 1:03:03Speaker 11: don't know what we're doing. And so we're going to,
- 1:03:05Speaker 11: by winning, we're going to commit. And by showing commitment,
- 1:03:08Speaker 11: we're going to win. And yeah, we're going to commit
- 1:03:10Speaker 11: by winning.
- 1:03:11Speaker 5: And guess what?
- 1:03:12Speaker 11: We're the second longest tenured ownership.
- 1:03:13Speaker 5: But we're going to.
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: Got it. Point made.
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: People have feelings about this topic.
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: I disagree that you say the Mariners weren't talented. They
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: didn't perform to their talent level. They are more talented
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: than Texas, certainly. I think they're more talented than Houston,
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: especially with Houston's injuries. But talent and performance, I think,
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: conflating that a little bit. There was definitely talent on
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: the Mariners roster, which makes the season even more frustrating
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: than it already was, which is awful. By the way,
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: we had two winners to our Kraken Ticket Tuesday giveaway.
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: Every hour, every Tuesday through the hockey season, you get
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: a chance to win two Kraken tickets by listening for
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: Everett Fitzhugh and the sounder horn for the Kraken goal-scoring
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: horn and be the first caller? What do we do?
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: Is it the first caller?
- 1:04:04Speaker 11: Tenth.
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: Tenth caller, excuse me. Tenth caller, yes. Tenth caller, when
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: you hear that horn, we're going to do it every hour.
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: Kevin McCarter from the 360 won two tickets to the
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: Kraken home opener Sunday afternoon, 5 o'clock against the Calgary Flames,
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: right after the Seahawks hosted the Chargers in Seattle. And
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: then Sean McIntyre, no relation.
- 1:04:25Speaker 4: But my exact spelling of my brother's name, the exact
- 1:04:28Speaker 4: spelling correctly.
- 1:04:30Speaker 13: Yes, our second winner.
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: Sean from the 360 also won two tickets to the
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: Kraken home opener on Thursday. Sunday against Calgary, and now's
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: your chance to win, too, $ 1, 000 from the Lucky Eagle
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: Casino and Resort.
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: It's your shot at our weekly $ 1, 000 and the $ 10, 000
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: grand prize. It's Fact or Fiction. Proudly presented by Lucky
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: Eagle Casino and Hotel, where every day feels lucky. Fact
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: or Fiction is on. Sports Radio 93.3, KJR-FM.
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: Alright, quick reset on how this works. You get 12
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: minutes to text in after Jessen makes her NFL pick
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: here against the spread or total points. If you agree
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: with what she picks, you text FACT to 49451. If
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: you disagree, you text FICTION to 49451. You have 12 minutes.
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: All you have to do is be right once this
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: week out of 20 opportunities among the four shows over
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: five days. We do it every day. 7.35, 11.35, 2.35,
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: and 3.35. Ian will have his at 2.35 next, but
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: jessamine has hers now.
- 1:05:35Speaker 4: I do i'm taking the bears minus three as they
- 1:05:38Speaker 4: host the jets because against your jets well this is
- 1:05:42Speaker 4: a hedge for me because it's a win-win i can
- 1:05:44Speaker 4: either win factor fiction or i can be happy that
- 1:05:47Speaker 4: my team wins because uh you know that's a three
- 1:05:51Speaker 4: point spread so i am just going with that bears
- 1:05:54Speaker 4: minus three as they host the jets i um.
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: Wait, there's three-point favorites at home over the Jets?
- 1:06:00Speaker 5: Really?
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: That's all?
- 1:06:02Speaker 3: Yeah, that's why I took it, Greg.
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: I thought it was on the road in the Meadowlands.
- 1:06:06Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: Nope, it is not.
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: Oh, because the Giants are home to the Cardinals this weekend. Exactly.
- 1:06:11Speaker 3: So, yes, it is minus three.
- 1:06:13Speaker 8: You know what?
- 1:06:14Speaker 4: Yes, it is minus three right here. So there are
- 1:06:18Speaker 4: a couple different consensuses. It opened at a much higher spread, though.
- 1:06:22Speaker 5: Oh.
- 1:06:22Speaker 3: But as of right now, minus three.
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: So we'll honor that.
- 1:06:25Speaker 5: Yes. Yes.
- 1:06:27Speaker 4: Yeah, and I like it because I am a lifelong
- 1:06:30Speaker 4: suffering Jets fan. And I know what we are incapable of,
- 1:06:34Speaker 4: and I just do not think... I mean, I look
- 1:06:36Speaker 4: at the way the Bears, even though in a loss situation,
- 1:06:39Speaker 4: the way they played the Rams.
- 1:06:40Speaker 3: I'm like.
- 1:06:41Speaker 6: The Jets can't do that.
- 1:06:43Speaker 3: They just absolutely can't.
- 1:06:45Speaker 4: I mean, it was a field goal of a game
- 1:06:46Speaker 4: in overtime. So I just look at that kind of score.
- 1:06:51Speaker 4: I'm talking about the playoffs last year.
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: Yes, exactly.
- 1:06:54Speaker 4: So this year, though, they smacked the Eagles at home
- 1:06:58Speaker 4: when they hosted them.
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: Beat them by 20 last night.
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: Yes, exactly. So, I mean, the Jets? I mean, you
- 1:07:05Speaker 3: look at.
- 1:07:06Speaker 4: The beginning of the season, the points that they're putting
- 1:07:09Speaker 4: up 59 to 37 over the Panthers. I mean, it's
- 1:07:13Speaker 4: kind of ridiculous. So, yeah, I mean, I know they
- 1:07:15Speaker 4: lost the Vikings in a really, really, really underwhelming game.
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: It was field goal central over there. But anyway, yes,
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: I just definitely like the Bears minus three.
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: Spoken like a true Long Islander betting against her Jets.
- 1:07:32Speaker 3: You know what? I'm surprised no one took that one.
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: Yet, especially. Bears minus three at home against the Jets.
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: If you think the Bears will win by four or
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: more points and you agree with Jessamyn, text FACT to
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: 49451 if you disagree and you think the Jets can
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: win that game or lose by fewer than three points,
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: text FICTION to 49451. You have about ten minutes to
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: do that. Ian will have another one at 235. That's
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: how it works. Someone won off of one of Jessamyn's
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: New York team pick. Was it New York? Yeah, it
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: was the Titans, wasn't it?
- 1:08:02Speaker 3: Yep, it was. It was the Giants-Titans. Yeah, and it
- 1:08:05Speaker 3: was a fiction pick, just to be fair.
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: That was your pick.
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: But, yes, you won for betting against me, sir, and
- 1:08:11Speaker 3: I grew to be wrong.
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: The text line, the COVID odds text line, 49451206 said, Listen,
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: that Jerry and John Stanton talk was so painful. If
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: they ever do a documentary about the owner of the Mariners,
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: they need to cast a Lloyd Bridges lookalike. They're both terrible.
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: Sell the team to someone that wants to win more
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: than 54%. 206 said, so the owner of the only
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: major league team to never even make a World Series
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: is bragging about being the third largest continuous ownership group.
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: Make sure you find the secret door for your $ 50
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: cotton candy margarita bull crap drink. And keep by the
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: $ 20 beers. We are suckers and we can't possibly be
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: more out of touch. That is a reference to our
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: point yesterday that the Mariners had their best attendance season
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: since 2004. 2004, 22 years ago. They drew 2.8, more
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: than 2.8 million fans, 35 plus thousand on average per
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: night for a team that was 10 games under 500.
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: The baseball operations was obviously broken. The business operations flourishing.
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: They're in the rub in the ownership group in my mind.
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: 360 says DePoto is a prima donna, not a hand-in-the-dirt grinder,
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: and they need hand-in-the-dirt grinding to fix this.
- 1:09:29Speaker 4: Who in the GM world right now? Everything is going
- 1:09:33Speaker 4: in a younger direction. GM presidents. It's not exactly like
- 1:09:37Speaker 4: you're getting the tenured guys.
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: That's true.
- 1:09:42Speaker 3: Jerry has several tenures, though.
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: 11 years.
- 1:09:45Speaker 3: I don't know if you heard that.
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: I have heard. 11 years and one division championship. Two
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: playoff appearances. That's what I've been told.
- 1:09:52Speaker 5: 425.
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: Should have waited a day for Dan and Jerry's circus.
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: Let Riz have his ride off to the sunset moment.
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: Get rid of Jerry and can Stanton. Can they sound
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: any more smug? And a couple people made the point
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: that John Stanton, the 425, said... In the interview with
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: Paul Silvey, John Stanton basically just explained inflation. It's true.
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: And pretended it meant to be aggressive in spending when
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: he said that each year, year over year, they increased
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: the player payroll. And I made the point of, well, yeah,
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: your revenues have gone up year over year. That's a
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: good point. He basically did just explain inflation. Oh, my goodness.
- 1:10:32Speaker 3: That was a good comment.
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: That was a good comment. Nico, our friend of the station, 360.
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: There's one simple solution. His name is Theo Epstein. Would
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: he come out here after all his success?
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: You know what?
- 1:10:47Speaker 4: Yeah, but he's kind of like a mad scientist type
- 1:10:50Speaker 4: of guy where I would see him looking at this
- 1:10:53Speaker 4: and going, I can fix it.
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: I could.
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: That would be a John Stanton move, though, to get
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: rid of Jerry DePoto. It's not like Theo Epstein would
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: work with Jerry DePoto. That would be an either or.
- 1:11:03Speaker 15: Oh, no.
- 1:11:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: 100%.
- 1:11:04Speaker 3: I'm just wondering what's possible.
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: Number 253 says Julio should pay back some of his
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: money in favor of play for performance. Yeah, if only
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: the Major League Baseball worked that way.
- 1:11:14Speaker 3: It's literally never going to happen. That's how baseball is.
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: Kurt Flood in the 1970s. Marvin Miller. Ever since then,
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: it's been the opposite of pay for performance for sure. 360.
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: I think people are underestimating the effect of the lockout
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: on Jerry and Justin keeping their jobs. Teams will have
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: a month to do any roster movement before the CBA expires.
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: The team can't waste any of that time looking for
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: a new front office. They'll get this year to prove
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: 2026 was an anomaly, and if they don't, both are gone. Mason,
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: that's a really good point. That's a really good point.
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: You're right. Do you want to be looking for a
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: GM and a manager in this offseason of all offseasons
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: when December 1st looms as a lockout date? The owners
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: locking out the players because of the salary cap and
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: salary floor they're trying to institute? That's a really good point, Mason. And,
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: you know, Jerry DiPoto saying, you say, well, we're proceeding
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: as if there's not going to be a lockout. That's
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: not entirely true because the Mariners have to consider what
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: could we get in a condensed period of time in
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: case it all goes dark on December 1st. And December
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: is when the free agency usually is.
- 1:12:23Speaker 4: That'll be an interesting time because usually in December, we're
- 1:12:26Speaker 4: just so in the thick of football, you know, college
- 1:12:28Speaker 4: football playoffs will be decided and you know conference championships
- 1:12:32Speaker 4: and nfl is in full swing we got you know
- 1:12:35Speaker 4: a couple games left in the nfl and all of
- 1:12:37Speaker 4: a sudden we're looking to see if we have baseball.
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: That's interesting that's a really interesting perspective about that part
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: of it that's good i'm not sure where i'm trying
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: to Figure out where this is coming in. 206 says,
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: Jory Epstein is bringing it today. Zeke's Pizza needs to
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: make a Jory Flex pizza.
- 1:13:00Speaker 3: Oh, I love that idea.
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: We should do that. That would be great, wouldn't it? Yeah.
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: And then I'll get Jory to come out here and
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: cover another Seahawk game. And she could have her Joy
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: Flex pizza. Ian Furness, the mayor of Maple Valley, is
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: outside my door. He's anxious to tell you what he's
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: got coming up next. If you missed it, fact or fiction,
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: about seven more minutes to call in. Jessamyn picked Bears
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: minus three at home over the Jets. If you agree,
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: text fact to 49451. If you disagree, text fiction to 49451.
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: Thanks to Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: Welcome back. Greg Bell and Jessamyn McIntyre with you on
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: 93.3 KJFM. I think the text line window just, or
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: the factor fiction window just closed. Jessamyn took Bears minus
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: three at home over the Jets. The window still might
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: be open. Ian Furness just shook his head at that.
- 1:13:58Speaker 6: He couldn't believe it. Couldn't believe it was minus three.
- 1:14:02Speaker 6: You're betting against the Jets.
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: That's what I said. Well, it's a win-win.
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: Oh, it's a hedge.
- 1:14:06Speaker 3: Yep, I hedge a lot.
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: Or fiction, the 49451. You might be able to get
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: in real quick.
- 1:14:12Speaker 6: I got you. I do the same thing. I took
- 1:14:14Speaker 6: Washington plus nine and.
- 1:14:15Speaker 13: A half yesterday.
- 1:14:17Speaker 6: I got you.
- 1:14:18Speaker 3: Yeah, we speak the same language.
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: I got you. I got you.
- 1:14:21Speaker 3: I learned from the best.
- 1:14:22Speaker 6: I got you. I actually am kind of regretting that
- 1:14:24Speaker 6: pick right now, to be honest with you. I think it's,
- 1:14:26Speaker 6: but whatever. It's a win-win.
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: Cleaning up on the text line, 49451, 253 said, the
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: lockout will be the next excuse as to why the
- 1:14:35Speaker 2: Mariners couldn't get it done next year. There was a
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: 360 text that brought up a really good point last segment.
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: It said that You know, people are underestimating the impact
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: that this lockout is having on the Mariners' decision-making. Why
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: would you want to go fire the GM and the
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: president of baseball ops and the manager and then have
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: to find all three of them before the lockout would
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: start December 1st? And you would be handcuffing yourself. This
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: is the wrong— I' m paraphrasing, but this is the wrong offseason
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: to go do that. And the 360 says, this is
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: Stanton telling DiPoto, you got one more shot this year.
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: To fix this. And we don't want to fire you
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: and then have to look for two guys during this
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: Knesset offseason. I hadn't thought of that in that light.
- 1:15:15Speaker 6: I think I'd be more terrified of John Stanton going
- 1:15:18Speaker 6: out and trying to hire the next guy.
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: I'm serious. I just don't.
- 1:15:22Speaker 6: I think he's just.
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: Did you hear him with Sylvie yesterday? Paul Sylvie? No,
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: I'm not. Paul Sylvie.
- 1:15:28Speaker 6: State radio?
- 1:15:29Speaker 5: No.
- 1:15:30Speaker 6: State TV?
- 1:15:30Speaker 4: No.
- 1:15:31Speaker 6: I love Paul, but come on. They're the TV partner.
- 1:15:33Speaker 6: There's nothing to be asked.
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: Well, but to Paul's credit, he asked him, what do
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: you say to fans who say you're not committed to winning?
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: And his answer was, we're the third longest tenured ownership group,
- 1:15:43Speaker 2: and we have increased our payroll in each of the
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: last five years.
- 1:15:46Speaker 6: It's still middle of the pack compared to the revenue.
- 1:15:49Speaker 6: It's lower half. Jess, we asked that same question when
- 1:15:52Speaker 6: I had him on two years ago.
- 1:15:53Speaker 5: Yep.
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: I remember.
- 1:15:53Speaker 6: We asked that same question. I asked him the same question,
- 1:15:55Speaker 6: same answer.
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: But as the texter said, he just explained inflation.
- 1:16:00Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: Because their revenues are going up each year.
- 1:16:02Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: And their luxury tax payments are going up each year.
- 1:16:04Speaker 6: That's a good point.
- 1:16:05Speaker 3: I love that text. That was a really good insight.
- 1:16:06Speaker 4: That's great.
- 1:16:07Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: That's the case.
- 1:16:08Speaker 6: We should all be getting raises. Anyway.
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: What's that? I know. It's silly talk. I worked at
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: the news in 12 years and never gotten a raise.
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: Not even an inflationary cost of living raise. I'm losing money.
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: I'm losing money. I know.
- 1:16:22Speaker 4: I know.
- 1:16:23Speaker 6: I feel your pain.
- 1:16:23Speaker 4: Side hustle, side hustle, side.
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: Hustle, side hustle. I'm speaking it right now.
- 1:16:29Speaker 6: No, I think that's, listen, I think if you were
- 1:16:33Speaker 6: to ask most fans, I mean, it's a good question
- 1:16:35Speaker 6: to ask maybe today, like what would make you happier,
- 1:16:39Speaker 6: them selling the team or them firing Jerry?
- 1:16:42Speaker 5: Ooh. Right?
- 1:16:44Speaker 6: I know what hand I'd put up for that. I'd
- 1:16:46Speaker 6: say sell the team.
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: I'd say change the president of baseball ops. The business
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: is working. The return on investment for those 24 owners
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: is working.
- 1:16:57Speaker 6: The business is working, but the baseball's not.
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: Right. So change the baseball operations president. In my mind,
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: the broken part is what needs fixed. The business part's working.
- 1:17:07Speaker 6: I just don't trust these guys to hire the right person.
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 1:17:10Speaker 6: So that's the problem. So that's why I would say ownership.
- 1:17:13Speaker 6: But they're not going to sell it, so it's kind
- 1:17:14Speaker 6: of a moot point.
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true.
- 1:17:15Speaker 6: I mean, why would they? They're making money, but.
- 1:17:19Speaker 2: What do you got today?
- 1:17:20Speaker 6: Well, it's our last Maliwap day.
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: Oh, a Tuesday Maliwap.
- 1:17:25Speaker 6: Well, we had the Jerry news conference yesterday, so we'll
- 1:17:28Speaker 6: react to that.
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: Nothing to say about that.
- 1:17:31Speaker 6: Yeah, nothing at all. Nothing.
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: Dead air. God.
- 1:17:37Speaker 6: Chomping at the bit, getting texts from people.
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: Where are those guys?
- 1:17:40Speaker 6: We need to hear them today. Well, you get them today.
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: Last time.
- 1:17:42Speaker 6: And, uh, John Lund, we'll talk NFC West coming up
- 1:17:45Speaker 6: at two.
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: It's the unbeaten 49ers. Yeah, I don't want it.
- 1:17:47Speaker 6: It's going to be a long session with him.
- 1:17:50Speaker 3: Ah, 49ers, Niners, Niners, Niners, Niners, Niners.
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: Purdy, Purdy, Purdy.
- 1:17:54Speaker 3: Uh, I got him on my fantasy team and he's performing.
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: Yeah, he's doing well.
- 1:17:58Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:17:59Speaker 6: So we'll, uh, we'll, we'll talk, uh, we'll talk with
- 1:18:01Speaker 6: Lund coming up at two o'clock, uh, brought to you
- 1:18:03Speaker 6: by Chambers Bay Distillery. So that'll be fun. And, uh,
- 1:18:06Speaker 6: I mean, I'd rather be the Seahawks at 2-1 than
- 1:18:08Speaker 6: the 1-2 Rams.
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: Sure would. The Rams are going to the Eagles this week.
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: That's not an easy task. That should be a win. Right?
- 1:18:15Speaker 6: Eagles looked like garbage yesterday.
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: Yeah, they didn't do it bad last night.
- 1:18:18Speaker 6: Awful. Case Keenum beat them.
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: Yeah, that wasn't great. By 20. Case Keenum! By 20.
- 1:18:24Speaker 3: I mean, that's what Jory was saying, is that it
- 1:18:26Speaker 3: is the era of the backup.
- 1:18:28Speaker 15: It is!
- 1:18:29Speaker 2: Jory made the point that Josh Dubow, my friend from
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: the Bay Area, said that all six quarterbacks who have
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: Started games who didn't start week one have won games.
- 1:18:37Speaker 6: That's crazy.
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: Replacement quarterbacks, including Michael Penix.
- 1:18:39Speaker 5: Wow.
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:18:41Speaker 6: Well, the Penix in theory would have been the starter.
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: Yeah, right.
- 1:18:43Speaker 6: But still, he looked good.
- 1:18:45Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:18:45Speaker 6: Yeah, a big show coming up.
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: Ian's up next from 12 to 3. On a Kraken
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: Ticket Tuesday. It is a Kraken Ticket Tuesday. Every hour,
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: he'll give away two tickets to the home opener. We
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: already gave away four tickets to two different people in
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: our show. Ian will do it three more times. Dave
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: Softy Marr and Dick Fane will do it all the
