Speaker 3: you know, I have a special place in my heart

Speaker 3: for anything having to do with the veterans, particularly Vietnam
2:06

2:10
Speaker 3: time this morning talking with the gentleman by the name

2:15
Speaker 3: that very thing. And there are several things in the
2:18
Speaker 3: news I want to get to as well, if time permits.
2:20
Speaker 3: Of course, it is girls basketball tournament time, day two

2:45
Speaker 3: the show, Doctor Casey Sachs a Bridge Valley, Good morning,
2:48
Speaker 3: Welcome to the show.
2:49
Speaker 6: Good morning, Dave. Great to be with you today.
2:51
Speaker 3: Thank you for taking time on your schedule to be now.
2:53
Speaker 3: Last when we talked last week, you were running around
2:58
Speaker 3: with a bunch of Irish education talk about and I
3:03
Speaker 3: and I thoroughly enjoyed having those folks in studio. I mean,
3:06
Speaker 3: I really really did. It was nice to meeting with
3:08
Speaker 3: them and hanging out with them a little bit. I
3:09
Speaker 3: hope we didn't scare them off too bad.
3:12
Speaker 6: We're inspirational to them. They said they were going to
3:14
Speaker 6: go home and call their local radio station to figure
3:16
Speaker 6: out how they could talk about their programs and workforce
3:19
Speaker 6: development at home.
3:19
Speaker 3: All right, well, I'm good for something. Then I will
3:22
Speaker 3: never and I will say this and we'll move on.
3:24
Speaker 3: I never thought it's kind of hard to translate on
3:28
Speaker 3: radio the expression. When I told one of the ladies
3:31
Speaker 3: about pepperoni rolls, she she, I don't know that pepperoni
3:36
Speaker 3: roles are a delicacy in her native land, because she
3:38
Speaker 3: gave me this look like I had, like, you know,
3:40
Speaker 3: I had just talked about eating a soap sandwich or something.
3:44
Speaker 6: You know, she was like, she kind of look, That's
3:46
Speaker 6: part of what was so important of your explanation was
3:49
Speaker 6: the history to really help an outsider understand how significant
3:52
Speaker 6: that was culturally to West Virginia. I think is really important.
3:56
Speaker 3: Well, you know, she may have been all about that,
3:58
Speaker 3: but I will tell you I don't know that she
4:00
Speaker 3: was that enthralled with the idea of pepperoni roles. To
4:02
Speaker 3: be honest with you, did you ever get them to tutors?
4:04
Speaker 3: Because I told you we took them to tutors. What
4:07
Speaker 3: did they think of tutors?
4:08
Speaker 6: I mean, I felt like it was a fairly warm reception.
4:12
Speaker 3: What's not to like exactly exactly? I just didn't know how,
4:15
Speaker 3: you know, because you've seen that. We've all seen these
4:16
Speaker 3: things online where they take people from different countries or
4:20
Speaker 3: whatever and they have them trying American food. I've seen
4:22
Speaker 3: some with Americans going to other places and trying that
4:25
Speaker 3: country's culture, that country's culinary stuff, and it's it can
4:28
Speaker 3: turn out quite humorous overall. Seriously, though, how how was
4:31
Speaker 3: their trip through the connetry?
4:32
Speaker 7: Well could visit.
4:34
Speaker 6: I think lots of opportunities. They're excited to create opportunities
4:38
Speaker 6: for our students to be able to come and study
4:40
Speaker 6: if they're interested. We would love to be able to
4:43
Speaker 6: do exchanges. I think there's a lot, especially about economies,
4:46
Speaker 6: that we can learn from each other, and I think
4:49
Speaker 6: overall really positive interaction.
4:51
Speaker 3: Well, that's good, and we were glad to have them
4:53
Speaker 3: in studio, and I know it was kind of a
4:55
Speaker 3: tight schedule, and I appreciate you taking time out of
4:58
Speaker 3: your schedule to come down as well. Okay, so a
5:01
Speaker 3: lot of people may not know this, but Bridge Valley
5:03
Speaker 3: actually has a student government association, right, we do.
5:06
Speaker 6: We have a wonderful student government association. It's a really
5:10
Speaker 6: involved group of folks.
5:11
Speaker 3: And you got a breakfast legislative breakfast coming up, right.
5:14
Speaker 6: So our student government, for the first time ever, decided
5:17
Speaker 6: that they wanted to get more involved with our state
5:19
Speaker 6: policy makers. So they the students themselves and now invitations
5:24
Speaker 6: to all of the elected officials who represent our region
5:28
Speaker 6: and said come have breakfast with us. So it'll be
5:30
Speaker 6: the first time they try it. It'll be Monday. It's
5:33
Speaker 6: their first day back from spring break. So I'm excited
5:36
Speaker 6: to see how it goes. They asked me to come
5:38
Speaker 6: and do a welcome and I'm honored that they invited
5:40
Speaker 6: me too.
5:41
Speaker 3: Well, that's that's really good. I mean that that they
5:44
Speaker 3: want to get involved. And one of the things I
5:45
Speaker 3: like about, you know, students at Bridge Valley is that
5:47
Speaker 3: they're all different ages too. So we we think college students,
5:50
Speaker 3: we're thinking, you know, just young folks, but there's there's
5:53
Speaker 3: probably some some folks with the little age on them there,
5:56
Speaker 3: they'll be taking part in this too. It'll be it'll
5:57
Speaker 3: be great for them as well.
5:59
Speaker 6: It's true I had a president a few years ago
6:01
Speaker 6: who was maybe ten years older than I am, And
6:03
Speaker 6: so that's actually really fun because they bring a lot
6:06
Speaker 6: of work experience and child rearing experience and life experience,
6:11
Speaker 6: and often our employers tell us it makes them better employees,
6:14
Speaker 6: and it certainly makes them more fun to have involved
6:16
Speaker 6: in student government because they really have some perspective on life.
6:19
Speaker 3: Talk to doctor Kasey Saxelbridge Valley to Dave Allen showing

Speaker 3: get delivery. Find your closest Hustans at Hussinspizza dot com. Now,
6:33
Speaker 3: we may not talk about what you got going on
6:35
Speaker 3: in Montgomery as much as we should when we have
6:37
Speaker 3: you on these segments on the show, But what exactly
6:39
Speaker 3: is going on in Montgomery these days?
6:42
Speaker 6: Well, so Montgomery, we have about ten percent of our
6:44
Speaker 6: classes there. It's really more convenient for folks who live
6:48
Speaker 6: in Fayette County and parts of Clay County, certainly up
6:50
Speaker 6: Oak Hill area, and so we really are proud of
6:54
Speaker 6: having a presence in the Montgomery area. And so one
6:57
Speaker 6: of the things we try and do is involve the
6:59
Speaker 6: town as much as possible in things. So we have
7:01
Speaker 6: a family night coming up on March twenty. First, we
7:04
Speaker 6: sent out flyers in town water bills, so we're hoping
7:07
Speaker 6: that's a good way to get the word out, and
7:10
Speaker 6: really it's you know, we have a fantastic theater there,
7:13
Speaker 6: so we're going to play a movie for kids. It's
7:15
Speaker 6: a very family friendly activity and we're hoping that the
7:18
Speaker 6: town comes out just to enjoy a nice Friday night
7:22
Speaker 6: in Montgomery.
7:22
Speaker 3: There's a lot of great things going on to Montgomery,
7:24
Speaker 3: and again sometimes I think that part of the area
7:28
Speaker 3: unfortunately does get forgotten about from time to time. But
7:31
Speaker 3: certainly got a lot of great folks in government up
7:33
Speaker 3: there and also some great folks in the community, and
7:35
Speaker 3: you guys have been a big part of that community
7:37
Speaker 3: in Montgomery.
7:38
Speaker 6: We really are so happy that we get to be
7:41
Speaker 6: there and have a presence, and you know, our HVAC
7:44
Speaker 6: program there is there our utility Linemen program, the dental
7:47
Speaker 6: Hygiene program. If you ever need your teeth cleaned, I
7:50
Speaker 6: know my students would love to do that for you
7:51
Speaker 6: for free. And that goes for any of the listeners.
7:55
Speaker 2: We do.
7:56
Speaker 6: We run a free dental clinic and it's wonderful for students.
8:00
Speaker 6: And the view is nice. Even if you're afraid of
8:02
Speaker 6: getting your teeth cleaned, you overlook the Kna River, so
8:05
Speaker 6: that's a plus.
8:06
Speaker 3: That's something to look at while you're having it done.
8:09
Speaker 3: So I also know that you do a lot of
8:12
Speaker 3: work with the Chamber of Commerce. You have a leadership
8:15
Speaker 3: event coming up with them soon, right, we do.
8:17
Speaker 6: So we're really excited about the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce.
8:22
Speaker 6: They've been wonderful partners for us. They, as you know,
8:26
Speaker 6: represent so many businesses in the area and they've been
8:29
Speaker 6: really committed to helping connect our students to employers. That's,
8:33
Speaker 6: as so many of you have heard me talk about
8:35
Speaker 6: many times, a very important part of the community to
8:39
Speaker 6: Bridge Valley is connecting our students with employment in the
8:41
Speaker 6: area and the Chamber's been a big part of this.
8:44
Speaker 6: So they actually have a women's leadership event later this
8:46
Speaker 6: month and for the last several years, they've given scholarships
8:49
Speaker 6: to some of our students so that they're able to attend.
8:52
Speaker 6: Student government pays the housing if the students need to
8:56
Speaker 6: spend the night in a hotel to be able to
8:58
Speaker 6: go to the leadership event, and so really has been
9:00
Speaker 6: an opportunity for students who never would have interacted or
9:04
Speaker 6: networked with that particular group of folks to really go
9:07
Speaker 6: down and get some great leadership skills and figure out
9:10
Speaker 6: more about how to connect with our local chamber.
9:12
Speaker 3: Actually had Kaylin George and Kathy Thomas from the State
9:17
Speaker 3: Chamber on the show on Monday talking about that leadership event.
9:19
Speaker 6: Oh they're the best.
9:20
Speaker 3: Yeah, they and they did a great job on the
9:22
Speaker 3: show as well, Doctor Sacks. It's always a pleasure to
9:25
Speaker 3: talk to you. Mentioned the students around spring break.
9:27
Speaker 2: Is that right?
9:28
Speaker 6: They are on spring break. It's quiet around here. If
9:30
Speaker 6: you need to get any paperwork done, yeah, and.
9:32
Speaker 3: That's in here. I'm taking time out of your schedule
9:34
Speaker 3: to have your work talk on the radio today. DoD
9:37
Speaker 3: love talking with you.
9:38
Speaker 6: Thank you for taking us.
9:39
Speaker 3: Doctor Casey Saxsonbridge Valley. Give us the website if people
9:42
Speaker 3: need more information.
9:43
Speaker 6: Again, it's Bridge Valley dot Edu.
9:45
Speaker 3: All right, we'll talk again soon. Thanks a lot, Thank you,
9:48
Speaker 3: doctor Casey Saxonbridge Valley. And by the way, I will
9:50
Speaker 3: say this if you didn't get to hear the show,
9:53
Speaker 3: and I think I'll have to check during the break.
9:55
Speaker 3: I think it was last Thursday that I had the
9:58
Speaker 3: folks from Ireland there ducators in Ireland. It was an
10:01
Speaker 3: exchange program, come into the Canau Valley here.
10:04
Speaker 2: It was.
10:04
Speaker 3: It was good. It was good stuff. Not because of me,
10:06
Speaker 3: but I just learned a lot in talking to those
10:09
Speaker 3: of folks. And I think one of my favorite things
10:11
Speaker 3: is when the gentleman referred to his son as being
10:14
Speaker 3: a petrol head, which is kind of like what we
10:15
Speaker 3: would say a gear monkey or something. I guess in America.
10:19
Speaker 2: It was a good show.

13:27
Speaker 3: Many of you know I have a special place in
13:30
Speaker 3: my heart for anything having to do with veterans, particularly
13:33
Speaker 3: those having served in Vietnam. You I've told you the
13:36
Speaker 3: story before, my late father being one of those. He
13:38
Speaker 3: thankfully survived but ultimately died from complications from that war
13:44
Speaker 3: from Agent Orange. So if there's ever anything that I
13:47
Speaker 3: can do, or the station can do. Any of us
13:49
Speaker 3: here can do to help out with anything with our veterans.
13:53
Speaker 3: Particularly for me, it's personal with Vietnam or that those
13:58
Speaker 3: that served during that time frame. I'm always eager to
14:02
Speaker 3: do so. I want to welcome Calvin Gramm in to
14:04
Speaker 3: the show. Calvin, good morning, Welcome to the show.
14:06
Speaker 2: Thank you for having me.
14:07
Speaker 3: Dave, thank you for being here. And you even brought props.

14:17
Speaker 3: project that you've done bring them Home.
14:19
Speaker 4: Well, we kicked the project off just over a year ago.
14:24
Speaker 4: It was sort of inspired by some of my own
14:27
Speaker 4: personal experiences in the military when I was My first
14:30
Speaker 4: work on missing in action issues was during my military
14:33
Speaker 4: service in Iraq.
14:35
Speaker 3: I was thank you for your service, by the way,
14:36
Speaker 3: thank you, thank you very much.
14:38
Speaker 4: Was an honor to do it. I served eight months
14:42
Speaker 4: in Iraq from six to seven as an intelligence analyst,
14:46
Speaker 4: and we were supporting special forces and Navy Seal operations,
14:49
Speaker 4: but our top intelligence priority at all times is we
14:53
Speaker 4: At that time, there were two American soldiers well, one airman,
14:56
Speaker 4: one soldier that we're missing in action. At the time,
15:00
Speaker 4: Argent a'm Ed Altai and Major Troy Gilbert were both missing,
15:04
Speaker 4: and no matter what we had on our plate, finding
15:07
Speaker 4: our guys was our top priority. So that was my
15:10
Speaker 4: first time really kind of experiencing the missing an action
15:13
Speaker 4: issue as a whole. This bubble to the surface. Next
15:19
Speaker 4: month will be the fiftieth anniversary of the fall Asigon
15:22
Speaker 4: and the kind of historic official end of the Vietnam War.
15:25
Speaker 4: And when the Vietnam War ended in nineteen seventy five,
15:28
Speaker 4: there were twenty seven West Virginians still missing in action
15:30
Speaker 4: that didn't get to come home, and the Operation Homecoming
15:34
Speaker 4: in seventy three when a lot of POWs came back
15:36
Speaker 4: to the US. The good news is since nineteen seventy five,
15:40
Speaker 4: ten of them have been recovered. The remains have most all,
15:45
Speaker 4: if not all, of there's over thirteen hundred missing an
15:49
Speaker 4: action in Vietnam War vets still unaccounted for. Seventeen are
15:53
Speaker 4: from here in West Virginia. Some are local guys that
15:55
Speaker 4: came right from the Canal Valley the goal and it's
16:00
Speaker 4: almost more terrifying as a veteran to think of being
16:03
Speaker 4: captured or missing than having to be killed in action
16:06
Speaker 4: or something right, And I read a lot of books. Surprisingly,
16:11
Speaker 4: a lot of the POWs from the Vietnam War wrote autobiographies.
16:14
Speaker 4: I've read about eight of them and used that as
16:17
Speaker 4: a lot of It's a big part of my research
16:20
Speaker 4: for this project, which has led me all the way
16:22
Speaker 4: to the National Archives in DC, our local archives here
16:25
Speaker 4: at the Culture Center, the Library of Congress, trying to
16:29
Speaker 4: find any and all records of the of what happened
16:32
Speaker 4: to these seventeen West Virginians. And that's what this documentary
16:35
Speaker 4: series is going to tell is we're going to try
16:38
Speaker 4: to tell their story as completely as possible because they
16:41
Speaker 4: weren't able to come home and tell it themselves. And
16:44
Speaker 4: that was sort of the difference. I was originally going
16:46
Speaker 4: to work on a project about POW's who came home,
16:49
Speaker 4: and I started reading their autobiographies, I was like, well,
16:51
Speaker 4: but they at least got to come home and tell
16:53
Speaker 4: their story, right, These guys haven't.
16:55
Speaker 2: And that's.
16:58
Speaker 4: I've focused a lot of my filmmaking career on military issues.
17:01
Speaker 4: I've done some other things. I've done commercials, i've done movies.
17:05
Speaker 4: The biggest thing that motivates me is telling important stories,
17:11
Speaker 4: and for me, these veteran stories are are important and
17:15
Speaker 4: they haven't really been shared before.
17:17
Speaker 3: Talking again with Calvin Grim, you know, and you said
17:21
Speaker 3: something there, Calvin that kind of struck a nerve with
17:23
Speaker 3: me about the finality of And I've never been as
17:27
Speaker 3: I said, my father was not captured. He came home
17:30
Speaker 3: and lived a pretty good life until he passed away
17:34
Speaker 3: actually eleven years ago.
17:35
Speaker 4: Services appreciated, and.
17:37
Speaker 3: He didn't like to He didn't really talk about it
17:39
Speaker 3: a whole lot. He said, Yeah, basically he was a guy. Yeah,
17:41
Speaker 3: I went, and that's pretty much yet, but those that
17:46
Speaker 3: were I always wonder. I try to put myself in
17:48
Speaker 3: the place of those families what it must be like
17:51
Speaker 3: not knowing. Obviously, it's a tragedy if you know that
17:54
Speaker 3: your son or daughter was killed in the line of duty.
17:58
Speaker 3: But at least with him, there is a and I
18:00
Speaker 3: don't I'm not trying to, you know, be cold hearted.
18:03
Speaker 3: There's a there's closure, you know, you know, but simply
18:10
Speaker 3: not knowing and not knowing was it sudden? Did they
18:14
Speaker 3: did they suffer?
18:16
Speaker 2: You know?
18:16
Speaker 3: Where they tortured? I mean, these things that I would
18:19
Speaker 3: think would have to go through these family members' minds.
18:22
Speaker 4: It does, and I will say that individual families and
18:26
Speaker 4: individual family members have all sort of processed it differently.
18:29
Speaker 4: I've interviewed a lot of them. We're still looking for some.
18:32
Speaker 4: I'd like to kind of use this as an opportunity.
18:34
Speaker 4: If you had on our Facebook page Bring Them Home,
18:38
Speaker 4: you can find the list of all the seventeen names.
18:41
Speaker 4: And we're looking for anybody who knew these guys because
18:43
Speaker 4: their story is not just their military record, it's also
18:46
Speaker 4: you know who they were before. One good example, and
18:50
Speaker 4: we're looking for anybody who may have known Sergeant James
18:54
Speaker 4: aka Jimmy Taylor. He's from Nitro, West Virginia, which, as
18:57
Speaker 4: everybody knows, Nitro is a huge military, uh supporting town.
19:01
Speaker 3: Oh yeah, And I mean the fact that he was
19:03
Speaker 3: founded upon.
19:05
Speaker 4: That exactly, And there's got it. He grat he he
19:08
Speaker 4: left high school early, he went to Nitro High School
19:11
Speaker 4: to join the army, and then in nineteen sixty six,
19:13
Speaker 4: his special forces camp was overran, the Aschylt Special Forces
19:17
Speaker 4: Camp and from all accounts, he was killed in action,
19:20
Speaker 4: but they could not recover his body at the time.
19:23
Speaker 4: And there have been reports over the years of you know,
19:25
Speaker 4: possible leads on you know a lot of times, you know,
19:28
Speaker 4: Vietnamese families would they weren't very they weren't known for
19:32
Speaker 4: desecrating bodies or anything, but they would like bury it
19:34
Speaker 4: and try to hold it for ransom type thing. And
19:37
Speaker 4: I think that's probably a case for at least some
19:39
Speaker 4: of our missing guys.
19:41
Speaker 2: Uh.
19:41
Speaker 4: There there are some that we know are are definitely
19:44
Speaker 4: they were killed in action. That just that their remains
19:46
Speaker 4: have not been able to come home. And that's really
19:49
Speaker 4: what it's all about is, you know, all these guys.
19:52
Speaker 3: Deserve a.
19:55
Speaker 4: Full military honors funeral. They deserve to be brought home,
19:58
Speaker 4: and it's important for them, but it's also important as
20:01
Speaker 4: a covenant to our troops that are still serving, because
20:05
Speaker 4: they need to know that, no matter what, they'll be
20:08
Speaker 4: brought home. And it's part of honoring the contract that
20:13
Speaker 4: America has with its troops.
20:16
Speaker 3: It's I mean, with these the seventeen, I mean you
20:20
Speaker 3: mentioned one, there's some with ties to Kanav Valley.
20:24
Speaker 4: What other areas are they are? They from all over
20:26
Speaker 4: the state, western up in the eastern Wheeling. The first
20:33
Speaker 4: West Virginian to go missing was Lieutenant David Wickham. He
20:38
Speaker 4: crash landed his aircraft onto the deck of the USS
20:41
Speaker 4: Kiddie Hawk and it flipped over slid into the Gulf
20:44
Speaker 4: of Tonkin, where he is sitting in the cockpit of
20:46
Speaker 4: that aircraft today and there's hope that he can be
20:50
Speaker 4: brought home eventually. And he's from Wheeling, West Virginia. That
20:54
Speaker 4: was the I'm sorry, that was nineteen sixty five, and
20:57
Speaker 4: they we lost veterans all the way through up through
21:00
Speaker 4: I think the last MIA was seventy two, maybe seventy three.
21:04
Speaker 2: And the.
21:06
Speaker 4: One common thread with their stories is that they're missing
21:09
Speaker 4: and they haven't been able to come home. But they
21:10
Speaker 4: all have very unique stories as well. And so one
21:13
Speaker 4: thing we are very excited to do, and it kind
21:16
Speaker 4: of leads into the show and tell item I brought here,
21:19
Speaker 4: is we're doing some re enactments of what we do
21:22
Speaker 4: know happen. We're not going to get into any speculation
21:25
Speaker 4: of you know, worst case scenarios or anything like that,
21:28
Speaker 4: because next thing you know, we're making a Rambow two
21:32
Speaker 4: type situation, which is unfortunately a movie that a lot
21:35
Speaker 4: of people have seen that it's a great movie, but
21:37
Speaker 4: it's not very accurate as far as the real situation
21:41
Speaker 4: with our missing in action veterans. But all of the
21:43
Speaker 4: costumes we're using for the re enactments are all reproduction,
21:48
Speaker 4: you know, Vietnam era sixteen's jungle fatigues, jungle boots. But
21:53
Speaker 4: the one item that they do not make a replica
21:55
Speaker 4: of is several of our guys went missing and Huey
21:58
Speaker 4: helicopter incidents. So I brought with me a it's an
22:02
Speaker 4: authentic Vietnam War era Huey helicopter pilot pilot's helmet, which
22:08
Speaker 4: will be used in at least a few of our episodes,
22:11
Speaker 4: including our first one, which will be about Sergeant Major
22:14
Speaker 4: Joe Pringle. He went down on a Huey just north
22:16
Speaker 4: of Danang and sixty eight they found the helicopter wreckage,
22:20
Speaker 4: but not the crew. I've been working with his son,
22:23
Speaker 4: Fred for well. He's actually my lead consultant on the
22:25
Speaker 4: project because he's been dealing with this situation since he
22:28
Speaker 4: was a kid. His dad went missing when he was
22:31
Speaker 4: like five years old, and so he's when I contacted him,
22:34
Speaker 4: he was jumping for joy, saying like, oh my gosh,
22:36
Speaker 4: someone actually cares about this issue enough.
22:37
Speaker 3: To And that's one thing I wanted to ask you,
22:40
Speaker 3: Calvin about the reception from the family, because again I
22:44
Speaker 3: talked about my father's experience in Vietnam, but he would
22:46
Speaker 3: answer questions, but he didn't really like he would never
22:49
Speaker 3: watch a movie, he would never watch a platoon or
22:53
Speaker 3: you know, yeah, I can see that. I can certainly
22:57
Speaker 3: understand that. But I would imagine that some families, as
23:00
Speaker 3: you said, like this one gentlemen are jumping for joy,
23:03
Speaker 3: but there may be some that are like, yeah, it's
23:06
Speaker 3: it's too painful. What has your experience been overall with
23:08
Speaker 3: the families.
23:09
Speaker 4: Well that you know, all across the spectrum. I won't
23:12
Speaker 4: name the veterans family out of respect for him or
23:15
Speaker 4: his family, but there was a situation where some of
23:18
Speaker 4: his remains may have been recovered at one point, and
23:22
Speaker 4: I contacted the family and they're all they're living on
23:25
Speaker 4: the West Coast now. They he had two daughters who
23:30
Speaker 4: were still alive, and they were when when their dad
23:36
Speaker 4: went missing. They were basically told, you know, he's dead.
23:40
Speaker 4: Mom remarried to a very anti war guy, and they
23:44
Speaker 4: just didn't talk about their dad anymore. And then here
23:46
Speaker 4: I come, fifty years later saying, hey, we've got some news,
23:50
Speaker 4: possibly about your father's remains, and they simply didn't care.
23:54
Speaker 4: They said, you know, we tell us he's been dead
23:56
Speaker 4: since the.
23:57
Speaker 3: Sixties, but he processes things differently, Calvin, you know that.
24:00
Speaker 4: Yeah, And so it's you know, and everywhere there in between.
24:03
Speaker 4: You know, some people some people are like, well, we
24:04
Speaker 4: appreciate it, but you know, what is this going to do?
24:07
Speaker 4: But again, I go back to, you know, there was
24:09
Speaker 4: twenty seven missing West Virginians at the end of the war,
24:12
Speaker 4: and we're recovering one about every five years on average,
24:15
Speaker 4: and we're due. The last one that was recovered was
24:18
Speaker 4: in like two thousand and four. So uh, And there's
24:21
Speaker 4: there's some promising news coming out just even recently that
24:26
Speaker 4: could lead to some of these guys coming home. And
24:29
Speaker 4: I can guarantee that when they do, there's going to
24:31
Speaker 4: be a lot of Vets here welcome home and give
24:33
Speaker 4: them a proper military funeral, which is what they earned.
24:36
Speaker 2: Sure.
24:36
Speaker 3: But Dave Alan Chilling five any lie broad to part
24:38
Speaker 3: by Pinnacle Consultants. Their services involved developing comprehensive management plans
24:42
Speaker 3: to outline strategies for controlling and minimizing as best as
24:45
Speaker 3: exposure perfect for commercial property owners and managers visit Pinnacle
24:49
Speaker 3: Corp dot net because what you don't know can hurt you.
24:52
Speaker 3: Talk about the process of dealing with these I mean
24:55
Speaker 3: when when you're trying to get the remains or trying
24:58
Speaker 3: to get answers, I mean you're dealing with governmental agencies
25:02
Speaker 3: here and there. I would imagine, I mean to talk
25:04
Speaker 3: about that.
25:05
Speaker 4: There's on the official level, the Defense pow m I,
25:10
Speaker 4: a accounting agency. It's an agency within the Department of Defense.
25:14
Speaker 4: They've had their name changed due to congressional what have
25:17
Speaker 4: yous over the years, but they've existed since the Vietnam
25:20
Speaker 4: War ended in one shape or another. They they send
25:24
Speaker 4: teams about three times a year over to Vietnam to
25:26
Speaker 4: do you know it looks like an archaeological dig with
25:29
Speaker 4: a you know, gridded format, testimonies from our veterans, Vietnamese
25:34
Speaker 4: veterans both on that fought for the North and the South.
25:38
Speaker 4: There's now a renewed, well a brand new partnership that
25:42
Speaker 4: never existed between US and Vietnam because we're actually helping
25:46
Speaker 4: them recover some of their veterans.
25:47
Speaker 3: As well that were lost. And yeah, I mean I
25:50
Speaker 3: would think we we focused being Americans obviously, that's what
25:53
Speaker 3: that's that's what you would expect, but you forget that
25:55
Speaker 3: when you talk about pow m I as of of
25:59
Speaker 3: any kind in that there's going to be some on
26:01
Speaker 3: the other side as.
26:02
Speaker 4: Well, definitely, And there's also Vietnamese equivalents of what we
26:06
Speaker 4: would call like the VFW or some of our veteran organizations.
26:09
Speaker 4: And there have been, you know, non governmental talks between
26:13
Speaker 4: our veteran groups in the US and their veteran groups
26:15
Speaker 4: that are said, Okay, let's get big government out of
26:17
Speaker 4: here and let's just sit down and have some conversations.
26:20
Speaker 4: And one thing that really shocked me and almost brought
26:23
Speaker 4: me to tears, and it still does thinking about it,
26:25
Speaker 4: is in at least three of the cases of the
26:27
Speaker 4: seventeen veterans who served with them have gone back on
26:31
Speaker 4: their own to look for some some went with the
26:34
Speaker 4: government as part of the Defense Agency I just mentioned.
26:37
Speaker 4: Some have just gone on their own dime and gone
26:40
Speaker 4: out in the bush looking and say, I know, the
26:41
Speaker 4: guy was here, what could have happened?
26:44
Speaker 3: And that's got to take a special kind of person
26:47
Speaker 3: to be able to do that.
26:49
Speaker 6: I was.
26:50
Speaker 4: I was just I found one case and then now
26:52
Speaker 4: it's up to three and I was like, oh my gosh.
26:54
Speaker 4: You know, they you know, and they love with this
26:56
Speaker 4: every day. You know. I've interviewed veterans that served with
26:59
Speaker 4: these m and it troubles them every day. Something they
27:03
Speaker 4: think about.
27:03
Speaker 3: And or they think maybe, you know, from a psychological standpoint,
27:07
Speaker 3: what that should have been me? Or maybe I could
27:09
Speaker 3: have done more, you know, I was I was his buddy,
27:12
Speaker 3: I should have had his back. I would think a
27:13
Speaker 3: lot of that goes through their minds too.
27:14
Speaker 4: It definitely does. The survivor's guilt part of it.
27:17
Speaker 3: Yeah.
27:18
Speaker 4: The one thing, and it's this gets back to, you know,
27:22
Speaker 4: asking for the public's help to find family members is
27:25
Speaker 4: if they do, you know, with all the different types
27:27
Speaker 4: of information they can get recover some remains, they have
27:29
Speaker 4: to be able to have a DNA sample from a family,
27:32
Speaker 4: a blood relative to compare it against. And it's really
27:37
Speaker 4: amazing the type of DNA tech that from. According to
27:41
Speaker 4: some of the they're scientists that work on this stuff,
27:44
Speaker 4: the DNA technology they're using to identify our veterans is
27:48
Speaker 4: at least ten or fifteen years more advanced than what
27:50
Speaker 4: even the FBI is using in criminal stuff. And they
27:53
Speaker 4: also have the advantage of there's not a defense attorney,
27:55
Speaker 4: you know, yelling at them like, oh, it's only a
27:57
Speaker 4: ninety nine percent likely right, yeah, identity, where with all
28:01
Speaker 4: the other information, it's like, Okay, this is our guy,
28:03
Speaker 4: so they need there's several of our veterans that they
28:07
Speaker 4: don't have a family. They call it a family reference
28:09
Speaker 4: sample and if and it doesn't doesn't have to be
28:13
Speaker 4: a sister, it doesn't have to be a parent or
28:17
Speaker 4: a child. It can be like a third or fourth cousin,
28:19
Speaker 4: as long as there is some blood relation. It's pretty
28:23
Speaker 4: impressive on the type of identification they can do. So
28:28
Speaker 4: that's aside from us wanting to tell their stories. We're
28:30
Speaker 4: trying to link up and we've already had two incidents
28:33
Speaker 4: where we linked up family members that they no one
28:35
Speaker 4: in their family had ever given a DNA sample, And
28:38
Speaker 4: it's not like a blood thing. They just swagger cheek
28:41
Speaker 4: and it's it's important that you know. There was a
28:46
Speaker 4: big group of remains just a week ago that were
28:49
Speaker 4: discovered or brought back from Laos, and four of our
28:52
Speaker 4: West Virginians are actually in Laos, not Vietnam, but not
28:54
Speaker 4: that we were ever supposed to be in Laos. Allegedly,
28:56
Speaker 4: but we were and we lost veterans there. And there's
29:00
Speaker 4: four West Virginians still missing in Laos and they just
29:02
Speaker 4: brought back a large amount. They didn't disclose exactly how many.
29:07
Speaker 4: But there's there's a chance that, you know, once they
29:10
Speaker 4: go through all the processes, that that could be one
29:12
Speaker 4: of our guys.
29:12
Speaker 3: Right, So.
29:16
Speaker 4: A lot of the families don't have you know, they're
29:19
Speaker 4: realistic that their loved one is probably gone, but every
29:23
Speaker 4: one of them still has some kind.
29:24
Speaker 3: Of hope closure.
29:26
Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly, there's a little bit of hope in there
29:28
Speaker 4: with all these folks.
29:31
Speaker 3: Where can people because you know, we've we talked about
29:34
Speaker 3: this project. I want to give you an opportunity to
29:36
Speaker 3: talk about where they can see where they can learn more.
29:38
Speaker 3: But but if if you mentioned mister Taylor, his family
29:42
Speaker 3: from the Nitro area, if there are people listening to
29:45
Speaker 3: this today that have questions comments, Facebook the best way
29:48
Speaker 3: to reach out to.
29:49
Speaker 4: You or yeah, we're working on our actual website. Uh
29:51
Speaker 4: their you know domains are difficulty, yes, very and we
29:56
Speaker 4: we're kind of working on that. But our Facebook page
29:59
Speaker 4: just bring them home. The stories of our fallen or
30:03
Speaker 4: are missing veterans of the Vietnam War. There's a couple
30:06
Speaker 4: of other bring them Home organizations out there, as it
30:08
Speaker 4: turns out, and there for different types of things. One's
30:12
Speaker 4: like a pet thing like trying to find moss paths.
30:14
Speaker 3: So, but that's us.
30:16
Speaker 4: And you can also reach our team directly at Lost
30:18
Speaker 4: Valley Studios at gmail dot com, or I can give
30:22
Speaker 4: my I'm happy to give you my phone number. It's
30:24
Speaker 4: eight zero five five eight eight six nine nine nine.
30:27
Speaker 4: You can email me, call me. Our our research team
30:31
Speaker 4: is we've we've spent thousands of hours, maybe tens of
30:34
Speaker 4: thousands at this point, I don't know, but looking into
30:37
Speaker 4: these cases. But we still have more to do. Right well,
30:40
Speaker 4: our first two episodes about Sergeant Major Joe Pringle and
30:44
Speaker 4: Sergeant Jerry Auxier. Pringle is from Weston, Auxier is from Dixie,
30:50
Speaker 4: West Virginia. Those two episodes are almost done.
30:53
Speaker 3: And where where will people see these?
30:55

35:06
Speaker 3: Thank you for being here. I want to get right
35:08
Speaker 3: to it it started. I mean, for my knowledge is
35:11
Speaker 3: somebody who doesn't you know? I mean, I follow what's
35:13
Speaker 3: going on the legislature, but you know, I got other
35:16
Speaker 3: stuff to do too. But I saw this release from
35:19
Speaker 3: the State Democratic Party aimed at you having to do
35:23
Speaker 3: with Senate Bill four fifty six, explain briefly what the
35:30
Speaker 3: bill is. Well, i'll do that.
35:32
Speaker 10: Let me say, first of all, for people who know
35:34
Speaker 10: what has happened here out of the gate, I am
35:36
Speaker 10: completely one, one hundred percent against kids being quote unquote
35:41
Speaker 10: examined in the way that the Democrat press release describes.
35:45
Speaker 10: That's the reason why I even had this amendment, which
35:47
Speaker 10: led to their press releases. I was working to prohibit
35:50
Speaker 10: those types of exams. I don't want that happening. I
35:52
Speaker 10: don't want kids being looked at. And I also want
35:55
Speaker 10: to say quickly this is also part of a distraction
35:57
Speaker 10: where they argue this is quote unquote all that we
35:59
Speaker 10: do up there or bills like this, And I'm not
36:01
Speaker 10: going to say there's none of this.
36:03
Speaker 2: There is some.
36:03
Speaker 10: We don't spend a whole lot of time in these issues.
36:05
Speaker 10: They do take up most of the media because they
36:07
Speaker 10: obviously get a lot of the use and people are
36:09
Speaker 10: interrested in these These are hot button issues. But if
36:11
Speaker 10: you look at our bill's pass page day, we'd work
36:13
Speaker 10: on tons of other stuff that's important. The very first
36:16
Speaker 10: bill that passed out of my committee and that passed
36:17
Speaker 10: the legislature this year was a foster care bill expanding
36:20
Speaker 10: services for foster care kids. So I would like I
36:22
Speaker 10: wish that was more than media focus. I understand that
36:24
Speaker 10: doesn't get a ton of clicks when you put that
36:26
Speaker 10: stuff out, but we work on lots of stuff. These
36:29
Speaker 10: are the things that get the most media attention. So
36:30
Speaker 10: let me quickly tell you what the bill is initially,
36:34
Speaker 10: and I'll tell you what my amendment was, and then
36:37
Speaker 10: where we've gone from there. So Senate Bill four fifty
36:40
Speaker 10: six is a definitional bill which defines single sex spaces
36:45
Speaker 10: in three limited locations only. It defines single sex spaces
36:49
Speaker 10: and schools, domestic violence shelters, and prisons. And the reason
36:54
Speaker 10: why and this was not my bill, Let's be clear
36:56
Speaker 10: about that too. This is a governor's bill. You know,
36:58
Speaker 10: it runs to the legislature, and legislation runs you got
37:01
Speaker 10: to take action on one way or another. But the
37:03
Speaker 10: bill was brought about by the governor because in some
37:06
Speaker 10: other states where it's common sense, we shouldn't have to
37:10
Speaker 10: do this, I don't think. But if you now don't
37:12
Speaker 10: put in code with the definition of male or female
37:15
Speaker 10: or man a woman is Then in some states this
37:17
Speaker 10: has happened before you can look at it. There will be,
37:20
Speaker 10: for example, a biological male sex offender who gets sentenced
37:24
Speaker 10: to prison then self declares that he is a woman.
37:28
Speaker 10: This has happened in California, New York, New Jersey, Washington States,
37:32
Speaker 10: some other places. In those places, they will house a
37:36
Speaker 10: biological sale or biological male sex offender in a female
37:39
Speaker 10: prison if he self identifies. If it's not defined as
37:42
Speaker 10: a single sex space, I realize that doesn't happen as
37:46
Speaker 10: a norm. I realize that it's a small segment of
37:48
Speaker 10: people who do that, but it does happen. There a
37:50
Speaker 10: be multiple states, as an example, where female inmates have alleged.
37:54
Speaker 10: These are public complaints, they're a mainstream news, this is
37:57
Speaker 10: not a conspiracy. Have alleged they were sexually assaulted in
38:00
Speaker 10: prison by biological males who have been housed with a
38:03
Speaker 10: female population. So if we don't codify what the definition
38:08
Speaker 10: of male and female is, and eventually at some point
38:10
Speaker 10: there's a potential for a lawsuit to be filed in
38:12
Speaker 10: one of those situations, and a single judge may have
38:15
Speaker 10: to act as a policy maker, which judges don't want
38:17
Speaker 10: to do and aren't supposed to do. Policy is supposed
38:20
Speaker 10: to be the legislature, so that's where this bill comes from,
38:23
Speaker 10: to define three limited places where single sex spaces are.
38:27
Speaker 10: It also, though, allows for gender and neutral accommodation. So
38:32
Speaker 10: if there's a domestic violence shelter, for example, and there's
38:35
Speaker 10: someone who doesn't feel comfortable in a single sex space,
38:37
Speaker 10: they can be accommodated in a gender neutral space to
38:40
Speaker 10: try to accommodate that person. So there's also some provisions
38:43
Speaker 10: there to help out those folks. During the debate on
38:46
Speaker 10: that bill, the Democrats proposed an amendment which said that
38:52
Speaker 10: you can't have an exam of a child's genitalia. This
38:56
Speaker 10: was the Democrat amendment, not mine, not the Republicans. Democrats
39:00
Speaker 10: proposed amendment that said and nowhere within the bill, and
39:02
Speaker 10: me be cleared, Nowhere in the bill did it provide
39:04
Speaker 10: for it or allow for exams of children. That's nowhere
39:06
Speaker 10: in the bill. It only defines single sex spaces.
39:09
Speaker 5: That's it.
39:10
Speaker 10: But the Democrats proposed an amendment that said that you
39:14
Speaker 10: cannot examine a child's genitalia or a minor's gen to
39:16
Speaker 10: tell you without parental consent, which when we saw that amendment. Frankly,
39:19
Speaker 10: I was shocked by it because the bill doesn't allow
39:22
Speaker 10: for that. I really don't want to even open that
39:25
Speaker 10: door about talking about examining children because I don't want
39:28
Speaker 10: that to happen anywhere. But when the Democrats proposed that,
39:32
Speaker 10: there was a discussion about, well, do we just try
39:34
Speaker 10: to vote that down. If we do that, does that
39:37
Speaker 10: infer to people that were actually okay with that idea.
39:40
Speaker 10: So some people in leadership said, well, let's propose our
39:43
Speaker 10: own amendment, and we had to clarify it further because
39:46
Speaker 10: the Democrats, I don't know why, did not include correctional
39:50
Speaker 10: facilities as a place where those exams cannot occur. They
39:53
Speaker 10: only said schools and domestic violence shelters. And to me personally,
39:57
Speaker 10: the correctional facilities for juvenile are the place where their
39:59
Speaker 10: most vulnelnerable, right, there's no one else there, and I
40:01
Speaker 10: have their parents. So I said, let's make it inclusive
40:04
Speaker 10: to all three environments schools, shelters, and corrections. And at
40:09
Speaker 10: first my proposal was let's just say no exams of
40:12
Speaker 10: children for purposes of determining sex. That's just what I said.
40:16
Speaker 10: Let's just do that because that's what I want. We
40:19
Speaker 10: were going to roll with that, and somebody said, wait
40:21
Speaker 10: a minute, but if you have a kid in corrections,
40:22
Speaker 10: for example, who needs health care, there's no parent there
40:26
Speaker 10: to consent. Could be some strange situation where a healthcare
40:30
Speaker 10: provider has to provide health care for some reason, or
40:32
Speaker 10: even just examine a kid verbally examined doesn't mean making
40:36
Speaker 10: the kid take their clothes off. An interview, could be
40:39
Speaker 10: a quote unquote an exam And someone said, well, in
40:41
Speaker 10: a corrections facility, for example, that may prohibit a treating
40:44
Speaker 10: health care provider from examining a child under any circumstances
40:47
Speaker 10: if we write it your WAYJB. They said, let's do
40:49
Speaker 10: a small carve out for treating health care providers that
40:53
Speaker 10: they can still potentially do treating health care without parental consent,
40:56
Speaker 10: but not just for purposes of making sure that a
40:59
Speaker 10: kid would a kid's sex is. It's just under any
41:02
Speaker 10: circumstance we can think of. We thought about putting emergency
41:05
Speaker 10: care in there as a qualifier, and we said, we
41:07
Speaker 10: can't think of every possibility where healthcare may be required,
41:09
Speaker 10: so we'll just say treating healthcare because a treat has
41:12
Speaker 10: a doctor, patient relationship. That should be a safe barrier.
41:16
Speaker 10: Otherwise it was a prohibition against examinations because I don't
41:20
Speaker 10: want those at all. So my amendment goes to the floor.
41:24
Speaker 10: I present it this past Thursday, March sixth. This is
41:27
Speaker 10: all archived audio on the House Legislative website. You can
41:30
Speaker 10: go to the House website, click on the House tab
41:32
Speaker 10: menu drops down. This says video audio. Click on that
41:35
Speaker 10: to the right, it says archived audio. Go to March sixth,
41:38
Speaker 10: that right around the one hour mark, and I sent
41:39
Speaker 10: you this audio. So this is only a boy a
41:42
Speaker 10: two minute conversation happening very quickly. My amendment comes up.
41:47
Speaker 10: It's a voice vote, and you can listen to the audio.
41:50
Speaker 10: You can tell the audience if I'm lying or not.
41:52
Speaker 10: The speaker calls for a voice vote on my amendment,
41:55
Speaker 10: there's a bunch of yeses. This isn't a role call,
41:57
Speaker 10: so it's not a paper, but you can hear this.
41:59
Speaker 10: There's a bunch of yeses. When the speaker calls for
42:01
Speaker 10: the nose. Did you hear any nose? Did I hear
42:05
Speaker 10: any yes? I did not hear no zero nos. So
42:08
Speaker 10: we have democrats in the chamber. None of them said
42:11
Speaker 10: no to my amendment, not one. Now they might somebody
42:14
Speaker 10: might get kind of weasly and say, well, you didn't
42:16
Speaker 10: hear me say yes, because it's not a roll call vote.
42:18
Speaker 10: But at the same time, none of them said no,
42:20
Speaker 10: and they say no loudly all the time if they
42:22
Speaker 10: don't like something, even they think they're going to lose
42:24
Speaker 10: zero no votes. Then as soon as the amendment passed
42:29
Speaker 10: with zero opposition verbally, another delegate and I don't mention
42:32
Speaker 10: people by name, but now I have to because they
42:34
Speaker 10: called me out in a press release, Delegate Kaye Young
42:37
Speaker 10: here in Kannall County, who I've always been respectful towards.
42:40
Speaker 10: I've never said a negative thing about her. She stands
42:43
Speaker 10: up on the floor and says literally, and you can
42:45
Speaker 10: tell me or tell your audience if this is wrong.
42:47
Speaker 10: She says, I'm excited that amendment passed. Thank you all
42:51
Speaker 10: for getting that across. Were those the works she used
42:54
Speaker 10: to Yeah, so as soon as my amendment passed, that's
42:56
Speaker 10: what a Democrat colleague of mine in Knau County that was.
43:00
Speaker 10: I'm excited that Jbi's amendment passed. Thank you all for
43:03
Speaker 10: passing that. And then she offered her own separate amendment,
43:06
Speaker 10: which again to me, was incomplete because he didn't provide
43:08
Speaker 10: protections and corrections facilities in her amendment field. That was
43:11
Speaker 10: last Thursday, Tuesday. Yesterday, the state Democrat Party issued a
43:16
Speaker 10: press release that she signed off on her She was
43:19
Speaker 10: she had a statement and among others, not just her,
43:22
Speaker 10: rather Democrats where they said that my amendment was outrageous
43:25
Speaker 10: and that.
43:25
Speaker 3: I've got the quote here. Can I read the quote
43:27
Speaker 3: for you? I mean, not the entire no, not the
43:30
Speaker 3: entire thing. It's a long pressure no no, no, no, no,
43:32
Speaker 3: just a quote. It's said intrusive. This is their words,
43:35
Speaker 3: intrusive child Genitalian inspection introduced by Delicate Acres from MISSI
43:40
Speaker 3: four fifty six. Delicate Kelly Young said it's unconstable that
43:43
Speaker 3: Republicans would support legislation that authorized intrusive visual inspections of
43:47
Speaker 3: minors without parental approval and that West Virginia should be
43:50
Speaker 3: disgusted by the invasion of yeah privacy.
43:53
Speaker 10: So again, she voted for that amendment, Dave, and she
43:56
Speaker 10: stood up on the house floor and you heard it
43:57
Speaker 10: in YadA and anybody else can where. She said she
43:59
Speaker 10: was excited that my amendment passed. So and I'll say
44:03
Speaker 10: this too, the discussion about examining children's quote unquote genitalia,
44:07
Speaker 10: which that's not in my amendment. I left the word
44:09
Speaker 10: genitalia out on purpose because I don't want the discussion
44:11
Speaker 10: even going that direction. I do not want kids being
44:13
Speaker 10: looked at. It was her amendment first that said that
44:17
Speaker 10: kids genitalia can be examined with parental consent. But I'm like,
44:20
Speaker 10: why do you even want that in there in the
44:22
Speaker 10: first place, So I didn't even open the door to this.
44:25
Speaker 10: Her amendment was the first one that ever talked about
44:27
Speaker 10: an exam and she's the one who used the word genitalia.
44:30
Speaker 10: I steered it away from that as best I could,
44:32
Speaker 10: and had the very narrow limited health care exception, just
44:35
Speaker 10: in case something happens in a place like corrections. And
44:38
Speaker 10: they voted for it, and she stood up and said
44:40
Speaker 10: she was excited by my amendment and she was glad
44:42
Speaker 10: that it passed. Then on Tuesday they come out and
44:44
Speaker 10: say that my moment's outrageous and that somehow I was
44:46
Speaker 10: supporting exams of kids one hundred percent unequivocally false state.
44:52
Speaker 3: Before and we got to take a break, and im't
44:53
Speaker 3: to ask you if you can stick around after the break.
44:55
Speaker 3: State for the record right now in front of God
44:58
Speaker 3: and everybody here listen to the radio. Tell us what
45:01
Speaker 3: you meant by what you said, and what you want
45:04
Speaker 3: to say now about this amendment.
45:06
Speaker 10: If one thousand percent was a real number, I'm one
45:08
Speaker 10: thousand percent against kids being examined. It was a very
45:11
Speaker 10: narrow carve out. In the event that there was some
45:12
Speaker 10: healthcare situation in place, like a corrections facility again where
45:16
Speaker 10: a parent couldn't be there, that was it. Otherwise, I'm
45:19
Speaker 10: gonna tell you I did not even wanted to amend
45:20
Speaker 10: it in there the first place. This was the reaction
45:22
Speaker 10: to her amendment where she was the one who brought
45:25
Speaker 10: up allowing kids to be examined.
45:26
Speaker 2: That was it.

48:15
Speaker 3: the Charleston Dirty Birds, Texas. Sounds like Democrats are trying
48:19
Speaker 3: to get ahead of a problem that doesn't exist yet.
48:21
Speaker 3: Sounds like the Republican playbook. Now, I want to go
48:26
Speaker 3: back to something that you said about how this has
48:28
Speaker 3: gone on in correctional facilities in other states, and that
48:30
Speaker 3: was going to be one of my points is and
48:32
Speaker 3: you said, you know, it's not happening in West Virginia.
48:35
Speaker 3: But I guess the fear with some of these things
48:37
Speaker 3: is is that it could happen here. And that's why
48:39
Speaker 3: we need because it does seem to me, like you
48:41
Speaker 3: said that weird. It seems to me not to be adverserio,
48:44
Speaker 3: but it seems to me like we focused a lot
48:46
Speaker 3: in the session on things that aren't actually happening here.
48:50
Speaker 10: To that you would say, I mean the Democrats also
48:53
Speaker 10: proposed legislation. Sometimes it's supposed to be proactive and solve
48:56
Speaker 10: a problem somewhere else that's not happening here. Yet both
48:59
Speaker 10: sides do that. There's nothing wrong with that. If you
49:01
Speaker 10: see something wrong somewhere else, you should address it here
49:04
Speaker 10: first before it is a problem. So that's what I
49:05
Speaker 10: would say that. And again, I don't consider this to
49:08
Speaker 10: be the biggest problem in the world. This is not
49:09
Speaker 10: what we should spend most of our time on, but
49:11
Speaker 10: it's not a non issue when you have this happening
49:14
Speaker 10: in some other places, so it does need to be
49:16
Speaker 10: addressed on some level. I do believe single sex spaces
49:18
Speaker 10: are important, and they used to be something that we
49:20
Speaker 10: all agreed on. I mean, that was something that I've
49:22
Speaker 10: quoted Ruth Bader Ginsburg I'm on the floor last week
49:25
Speaker 10: and said that she herself said single sex spaces are
49:27
Speaker 10: a necessity, and I agree with that. But I want
49:29
Speaker 10: to also tell you, Dave, I know that you may
49:31
Speaker 10: have other people want to talk about this. Who will
49:32
Speaker 10: imter chair me and listen to my interview and decide
49:35
Speaker 10: on ways to pick it apart. My amendment was eventually
49:38
Speaker 10: I would welcome having you and Delegate Young or whomever.
49:43
Speaker 3: I would get it. I would do it so.
49:44
Speaker 10: But anyway that I'd be happy to do that challenge
49:47
Speaker 10: out there, Delegate, I would do it so. But on
49:48
Speaker 10: another issue, the Senate wound up changing our amendment, and
49:52
Speaker 10: the one of the Democrats said in the floor yesterday
49:54
Speaker 10: that they were glad that the Senate amendment was changed
49:57
Speaker 10: ours and that my original amendment was dangerous. Again this,
50:00
Speaker 10: I'll tell you who said that is Mike Pushkin, who
50:02
Speaker 10: has a strange obsession with me. But Pushkin said on
50:04
Speaker 10: the floor that my original amendment was dangerous, the same
50:07
Speaker 10: amendment he did not verbally vote against last Thursday, and
50:11
Speaker 10: the synonym amendment was one that I helped work on
50:13
Speaker 10: with them, and that I helped craft as well. I
50:15
Speaker 10: was involved in that discussion because I just wanted to
50:17
Speaker 10: focus on no exams, and that's what the eventual amendment
50:21
Speaker 10: we all agreed upon mostly focused on. That's what I
50:23
Speaker 10: was trying to get to. After the Democrats opened this
50:26
Speaker 10: door with exams in the first place. And I also
50:29
Speaker 10: tell you this is extremely troubling to me because I've
50:33
Speaker 10: always been nice to the Democrats, always shake their hands,
50:36
Speaker 10: always ask them how they're doing, whether we agree or not.
50:38
Speaker 10: I try to come up with compromises. This is why
50:40
Speaker 10: you can't be Bob Hartisan Dave. They literally voted for
50:43
Speaker 10: and supported my amendment last Thursday, and then on Tuesday
50:47
Speaker 10: a couple days later, issue a press release against me,
50:50
Speaker 10: acting like they didn't do that, and then attacking me
50:52
Speaker 10: as being someone who's trying to cause these bizarre exams,
50:54
Speaker 10: which I'm against. So I'd love to work with them.
50:57
Speaker 10: I try to get along with everybody. We have tons
51:00
Speaker 10: of Democrat voters out there who I try to help.
51:02
Speaker 10: This isn't just about the politicians, but in terms of
51:04
Speaker 10: the people in the Capitol. This is why you can't
51:06
Speaker 10: be bipartisan, because they just they will not let you.
51:10
Speaker 10: The minute you vote on something, vote on something together,
51:12
Speaker 10: they'll turn around and try to pretend like they didn't
51:14
Speaker 10: do it.
51:14
Speaker 3: On an issue like this, we had a text that
51:16
Speaker 3: said I got a ton of texts, one that says,
51:19
Speaker 3: ask him why Republicans in the Senate shripped the amendment
51:22
Speaker 3: out of the bill, and do you wish they would
51:24
Speaker 3: put it back in?
51:25
Speaker 10: No, I mean the eventual version we agreed upon. I
51:28
Speaker 10: helped work on the Senate version, which the House agreed
51:30
Speaker 10: upon it, and I was fine with that too. I mean, again,
51:33
Speaker 10: my main focus was making sure that kids do not
51:36
Speaker 10: get examined. And on the House side, this wasn't just me.
51:38
Speaker 10: It was a discussion among many people. We need to
51:40
Speaker 10: make sure potentially the kids their healthcare isn't interfered with.
51:43
Speaker 10: And I'm like, fine, if you guys want to do that,
51:45
Speaker 10: I'll do However, and I had to be the one
51:47
Speaker 10: who presented it because that's how it works on the
51:49
Speaker 10: Judiciary chair issues like this, I wind up having to
51:51
Speaker 10: present on the floor, so I try to come up
51:53
Speaker 10: with a compromise on both sides. I'm perfectly happy with
51:55
Speaker 10: the Senate version. I really didn't want an amendment addressing
51:58
Speaker 10: this at all because of the building doesn't call for exams.
52:01
Speaker 10: But once this issue came up, the Senate version is
52:03
Speaker 10: perfectly fine with me. I don't want kids being examined.
52:06
Speaker 10: I don't What are you.
52:07
Speaker 3: Working on today, sir? As we wrap up the show,
52:09
Speaker 3: what's on your schedule today?
52:10
Speaker 10: We have tons of stuff. We have actually a median
52:12
Speaker 10: I'm missing right now, and we have four sessions or
52:14
Speaker 10: a floor session at eleven. I mean we have and
52:17
Speaker 10: again a lot of our bills, Dave, they're not going
52:19
Speaker 10: to revolve run social issues. That's not what I focus
52:21
Speaker 10: on on the jobs, the conmy guy, That's mostly why
52:24
Speaker 10: I want to focus on. So that's those are the
52:25
Speaker 10: things we like. Micro good legislation is a big deal
52:28
Speaker 10: this year. I want to see that done quickly.
52:30
Speaker 3: All right, Della good j Bakers. I appreciate you being
52:33
