- 0:56Speaker 1: stay close to that, mighty, I'll get close to it.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Tell people how you don't like to wear your own
- 1:00Speaker 1: hat just because you can't wear your own T shirt.
- 1:03Speaker 1: You can't wear your own hat just I don't know,
- 1:05Speaker 1: you can't be called in t J Max well your
- 1:07Speaker 1: own hat on I don't just can't be a tool.
- 1:09Speaker 1: So uh that puts me in an awkward spot. You
- 1:13Speaker 1: wear your mate eat or hat. Yeah, but you gotta
- 1:16Speaker 1: you gotta. I mean it's not my name. Ye. If
- 1:17Speaker 1: I had a name said Steve, I wouldn't wear a
- 1:19Speaker 1: shirt and said like Steve yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly. You
- 1:22Speaker 1: know this, it was like a different Steve yeah yeah.
- 1:25Speaker 1: What about a shirt that just said Dave, because that'd
- 1:29Speaker 1: be like people that wear garage shirts with someone else's
- 1:31Speaker 1: name on it. Ozzi used to do that heat being
- 1:34Speaker 1: like the tight spandex like outfit wild, you know, good
- 1:38Speaker 1: hanging out and it just say Ozzy and dazzles and
- 1:40Speaker 1: like nobody's got the balls to be wearing that these days,
- 1:42Speaker 1: you're talking the Blizzard of oz Yo. Yeah yeah, you fan, Yeah,
- 1:46Speaker 1: my dad, that's what I grew up on. A big
- 1:48Speaker 1: Randy Rhodes fans in the plane wreck. Yep, yep. That's
- 1:53Speaker 1: how the best own go. You know. Um, I used
- 1:56Speaker 1: to have a I used to work for a place
- 1:59Speaker 1: called Quality Ain't its contractors and they did uh industrial
- 2:04Speaker 1: codings and painting and all that. And one time me
- 2:06Speaker 1: and this dude from high school named Craig comp had
- 2:09Speaker 1: to go into a factory where they made auto parts.
- 2:13Speaker 1: They made like rear view years and stuff for Honda
- 2:15Speaker 1: or something like that. But it was in it was
- 2:17Speaker 1: in Michigan, and we had to clean the whole ceiling
- 2:21Speaker 1: like d grease from the car factory, in an auto
- 2:26Speaker 1: parts factory, D grease all of the steel girders and
- 2:31Speaker 1: trusses because they were gonna spray them. And they had
- 2:34Speaker 1: to put that fire retardant spray up there. What the
- 2:36Speaker 1: hell had to be prepped and we were and we
- 2:39Speaker 1: were doing one section and they wanted it done. We
- 2:43Speaker 1: had to do it just a one spell and I
- 2:46Speaker 1: and we came in. First shift was in that factory.
- 2:49Speaker 1: I mean Craig showed up. They left, Second shift came in,
- 2:57Speaker 1: they left, third shift came in, they left. The first
- 3:01Speaker 1: ship people came back, I mean Craig were still there.
- 3:04Speaker 1: And I entered like a transcendent transcendent state, what's the
- 3:08Speaker 1: word I'm trying to say, Like a hallucinatory state, that
- 3:11Speaker 1: flow state. And we're listening to k l q UM.
- 3:16Speaker 1: I'll always remember this. We're up in a scissor lift.
- 3:19Speaker 1: And I entered such a state that I at one
- 3:21Speaker 1: point said, I think they're gonna play crazy Train. Oh man,
- 3:24Speaker 1: that's what you needed. And they played crazy Train, did they?
- 3:27Speaker 1: That's usually the way it goes when I don't never
- 3:29Speaker 1: listen to the radio, but if I turn it on,
- 3:31Speaker 1: it's usually got to be something where that it goes
- 3:33Speaker 1: right back off when you get that. That's one like
- 3:36Speaker 1: streaming services are nice and all that, but you can't
- 3:40Speaker 1: there's a thing about radio, like why do you song
- 3:44Speaker 1: like good songs sound better on radio because you don't
- 3:48Speaker 1: have the you don't have the acause surprise, I can't
- 3:52Speaker 1: skip it. And it's like all of a sudden, like
- 3:54Speaker 1: I could go right now and play Crazy Tramp. I
- 3:56Speaker 1: felt like, he can you play that? Knock? It's I
- 4:00Speaker 1: play that now? I mean that's what. Uh, that's kind
- 4:02Speaker 1: of that's a good talking point and maybe get out
- 4:04Speaker 1: on my My guitar work is uh, it's very uh,
- 4:08Speaker 1: very unorthodox, even in Nashville. I showed up and it
- 4:12Speaker 1: uh everybody in town really is kind of plays in
- 4:15Speaker 1: the same format. And the way I grew up learning guitars,
- 4:19Speaker 1: I never thought I could sing, just because I have
- 4:20Speaker 1: a real deep voice, and you know, a guitar and
- 4:23Speaker 1: a standard tune and set in which majority of the
- 4:25Speaker 1: songs are in um anything on the radio song it's
- 4:28Speaker 1: in standard tune and it's usually like a G and
- 4:30Speaker 1: a C and D. You know what I mean. That's
- 4:32Speaker 1: got no idea. Yeah, So I never grew up like that.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Because I was like, man, I can't sing like that,
- 4:37Speaker 1: So I just d tune these strings all kinds of
- 4:40Speaker 1: weird ways and not really like that's not common. I
- 4:43Speaker 1: mean some tuning is uncommon, but what I was doing,
- 4:46Speaker 1: you know, uh, people in town still I work with
- 4:49Speaker 1: some great people and be like, what do you even
- 4:50Speaker 1: play it? You know what I mean? Like I don't know,
- 4:52Speaker 1: you know, even in that's what in standards, Like, I
- 4:55Speaker 1: don't know what I'm doing even in standard tune. And
- 4:58Speaker 1: you take that into you know, d tuning the guitar.
- 5:01Speaker 1: You know, it's uh, it's kind of one of those
- 5:03Speaker 1: things where it's like if you don't know anything, everything's
- 5:06Speaker 1: you know, that's your access. But you got to spend years. Fine,
- 5:10Speaker 1: you know all that didn't sound good? What I got next?
- 5:12Speaker 1: You know what I mean, not to many people want
- 5:14Speaker 1: to do that. You know the Leonard SKINNERD quote from
- 5:16Speaker 1: one of the dudes, the Leonard SKINNERD was learned to
- 5:19Speaker 1: play your guitar, then get sexy. Yeah, yeah, you just
- 5:23Speaker 1: skipped right to the sexy. I don't know about all that,
- 5:26Speaker 1: but we were tried. We tried. Oh you know, who
- 5:29Speaker 1: can sing like a little Bird's Chester The molester. Oh yeah,
- 5:35Speaker 1: he's uh, he's I've seen him evolve over the past
- 5:38Speaker 1: few months, playing guitar and singing, and he's getting good.
- 5:40Speaker 1: He he did this, Buddy Bars just got married. So
- 5:46Speaker 1: Chester Chester Chester Floyd. Yeah, I save him in my
- 5:50Speaker 1: phone it's Chester the Molester because my kids they don't
- 5:53Speaker 1: know what a molester is, but they laugh on my truck,
- 5:55Speaker 1: says Chester the Molester, and I tell to call them,
- 5:57Speaker 1: but uh, he got we're fishing your night, and he's
- 6:02Speaker 1: explaining this whole story where he learned how to play
- 6:04Speaker 1: a song, someone else's song, but Tyler Childer's song to
- 6:08Speaker 1: get up and like serenade his wife at his wedding
- 6:10Speaker 1: and at a couple of weeks it was a good performance.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Well he ran. The problem is everybody thinks that he
- 6:15Speaker 1: wrote it. He didn't clarify or anywhere in listening, so
- 6:19Speaker 1: people are like he was talking about how people are
- 6:22Speaker 1: crying and like, I can't believe you wrote that beautiful
- 6:25Speaker 1: song for your wife, And now he's running around And
- 6:28Speaker 1: then even after the fact, my wife was talking to
- 6:31Speaker 1: someone who's talking about this beautiful song Jester wrote. So
- 6:37Speaker 1: he need to do a better job in the future.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Uh so, uh, you moved out you lived here for
- 6:43Speaker 1: a while. Yeah, that's what he came out here to
- 6:45Speaker 1: be a fishing guy. Yeah, yeah, that's what I kind
- 6:47Speaker 1: of have two phases. I kind of was telling Buddy
- 6:49Speaker 1: last night, you know, around a couple of beers, just
- 6:52Speaker 1: I feel like I've had two phases in my life
- 6:54Speaker 1: of just uh, I'll fishing and guitar, you know, and
- 6:58Speaker 1: I feel like both are very had a tate of
- 7:01Speaker 1: activities or hobbies that I turned into disciplines in a
- 7:04Speaker 1: sense maybe I mean, I don't know if you call
- 7:06Speaker 1: it that, but uh, yeah, I grew up when my
- 7:09Speaker 1: dad just going camping and fishing, uh for stock trout
- 7:12Speaker 1: up in North Carolina, in the Davidson and Mills River.
- 7:14Speaker 1: And I just grew up catching that stock trout like
- 7:18Speaker 1: if you catch it, you know, he was not born
- 7:20Speaker 1: in the river you put you probably put it in.
- 7:22Speaker 1: You know. We got help the DNR people, you know,
- 7:24Speaker 1: dump buckets of just hogs and the and the river.
- 7:27Speaker 1: And then you know, I think Seth Din used to
- 7:30Speaker 1: do something quite similar to that. Yeah. I used to
- 7:32Speaker 1: help the fish commission stock him and then I go
- 7:34Speaker 1: back and fish the holes three the big ones. Yeah,
- 7:38Speaker 1: and that last. Those fish last about a day. I'm
- 7:41Speaker 1: catching re lease guy, but nobody else is. In South Carolina,
- 7:45Speaker 1: it seems like, so you go catch the stockers, let
- 7:47Speaker 1: them go. Yeah yeah yeah. And then Homie Coup would
- 7:49Speaker 1: come down the river and just take it back. You know,
- 7:51Speaker 1: we had people all kinds of people casting that the river.
- 7:54Speaker 1: You just walk up like, man, come home man. You know,
- 7:58Speaker 1: even in the delayed harvest. It's like here, my dad
- 8:01Speaker 1: pulled a gun on somebody one day because he was
- 8:03Speaker 1: doing that. Just worked him up just I probably shouldn't
- 8:06Speaker 1: said him up. Pistol whipped him. No, no, no, I
- 8:08Speaker 1: just worked him up just because we always I don't know,
- 8:10Speaker 1: just Dad's down there with the pistol. Yeah yeah, yeah yeah,
- 8:13Speaker 1: do a little fish, yeah yeah yeah. Statue of limitations
- 8:17Speaker 1: good and this guy yeah, and then he's got this
- 8:22Speaker 1: cooler full of fish and he's like, you know, what
- 8:24Speaker 1: are you doing man? Kind of you know he uh,
- 8:26Speaker 1: long story shore, he took that cooler. Fish, don't be
- 8:28Speaker 1: back in the river. He's like, I'm calling d n
- 8:30Speaker 1: R right now, just just because back home we have
- 8:32Speaker 1: one good little place we can fish, and everybody just
- 8:35Speaker 1: messes it up, it seems like, So tell me the
- 8:36Speaker 1: pistol pulling story though, So like, okay, so there you are. Yeah,
- 8:40Speaker 1: he's like, oh yeah, because the guy thought he was
- 8:42Speaker 1: a police and you know, he obviously wasn't. So um,
- 8:46Speaker 1: I'm trying to get like, I mean, he did he
- 8:49Speaker 1: pull it on him like this, but I mean he
- 8:50Speaker 1: was yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I guess that's what you
- 8:53Speaker 1: would call it. And then the guy dumped the fish off. Yeah,
- 8:55Speaker 1: he took off him and him and two other people, yeah,
- 8:59Speaker 1: you know, and then it took out an hour for
- 9:00Speaker 1: game ward and get there, and then they found him
- 9:03Speaker 1: on down the river. So it's just not legal to
- 9:06Speaker 1: fish that way at all. Yeah yeah, yeah, well yeah,
- 9:11Speaker 1: I don't know general a general American rule of thumb
- 9:15Speaker 1: that this is the generalization you generally dasn't be casting
- 9:20Speaker 1: netting in fresh water, especially table you know what I mean.
- 9:27Speaker 1: But yeah, that's what I grew up fishing kind of streams,
- 9:29Speaker 1: you know, no bigger than this room. And I thought
- 9:31Speaker 1: that was you know, you could that was the big water.
- 9:34Speaker 1: And then I came out here and realized those are
- 9:36Speaker 1: just little little creeks. Back home, but uh yeah, I
- 9:39Speaker 1: graduated high school in two thousand and fifteen and uh
- 9:42Speaker 1: seventeen at the time, and just moved out here. I
- 9:44Speaker 1: didn't know anybody, and uh the first week I was here,
- 9:48Speaker 1: you know, just started fishing, fishing my way out of
- 9:51Speaker 1: school pretty much two years. So you enrolled in school, yeah,
- 9:54Speaker 1: but Montana State flunked out. Yeah yeah, yeah. I just
- 9:58Speaker 1: couldn't pass myth at all. So I was like, man,
- 10:01Speaker 1: might as well be getting some enjoyment out of being here.
- 10:04Speaker 1: So then you took off yeah yeah on the river. Yeah.
- 10:07Speaker 1: I was here for two years and got two years
- 10:09Speaker 1: worth a good fishing in and uh yeah, man, just
- 10:12Speaker 1: loved it as a good place for a seventeen year
- 10:14Speaker 1: old to come figure it out and you know, not
- 10:16Speaker 1: get in trouble. I feel out there's uh I don't know,
- 10:18Speaker 1: there's like three cops in town compared to everywhere else
- 10:21Speaker 1: back home. So it's a good place for a kid
- 10:23Speaker 1: not to get in trouble in a sense. You feel
- 10:25Speaker 1: there's a low cop per criminal ratio out here. Oh yeah,
- 10:29Speaker 1: I don't know about the criminal ratio, but definitely definitely
- 10:31Speaker 1: I feel like, oh, just little cops, yeah yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 10:34Speaker 1: You can be walking down the road, but it's interesting perspective. Ever,
- 10:37Speaker 1: Like I'll tell you, well, I do kind of notice
- 10:38Speaker 1: that a little bit because I think that, uh, New Mexico,
- 10:43Speaker 1: the the depth and variety of law enforcement agencies that
- 10:47Speaker 1: maintain a presence in New Mexico was staggering, like in
- 10:50Speaker 1: a in a they have a heavy presence, just every lawn,
- 10:54Speaker 1: everything imaginable. Yeah, because they got a buller patrol down
- 10:57Speaker 1: just like every other car. You know, I don't know
- 11:01Speaker 1: if I can make it down there. So you break
- 11:03Speaker 1: a lot of loss, yeah, I mean, yeah, do it elegantly,
- 11:09Speaker 1: but you're not a violator. No, not a game, no,
- 11:11Speaker 1: not a no, not at all, just you know, not
- 11:14Speaker 1: anything in the hunting fishing world breaking as at all.
- 11:17Speaker 1: That's good. That's good. Um. He was gonna ask then
- 11:21Speaker 1: he left because you had a girlfriend somewhere. Yeah, So
- 11:23Speaker 1: I I had like a girlfriend back home and uh
- 11:28Speaker 1: pretty much uh like you left her to come here. Yeah,
- 11:31Speaker 1: I left her to come here, and then thanks got
- 11:33Speaker 1: kind of think of it that way. Uh yeah, but
- 11:35Speaker 1: that was even before we met. It was one of
- 11:37Speaker 1: those things. Uh, it was always my dream to come
- 11:40Speaker 1: out here, and so when I left, it was kind
- 11:42Speaker 1: of like eating my dream in my face coming back
- 11:44Speaker 1: and I got back and I was like, what did
- 11:46Speaker 1: I just do? You know what I mean? And so
- 11:48Speaker 1: I enrolled after I was here at Montana State, I
- 11:52Speaker 1: pretty much sold my clack of craft and went back home.
- 11:55Speaker 1: And uh, the clack of craft got those seven songs
- 11:59Speaker 1: right there, and uh, well you wrote these songs on
- 12:02Speaker 1: this and that like that the soul the clack of craft,
- 12:06Speaker 1: and that paid for that. So my parents didn't even
- 12:08Speaker 1: know I sang until I got back after after college,
- 12:12Speaker 1: and uh pretty much spiraled into this this project Jericho
- 12:16Speaker 1: Rose that tune as Uh, it's about Montana and my
- 12:19Speaker 1: experience leaving. Uh I was in it's kind of all
- 12:22Speaker 1: it all works out in a sense. Uh enrolled at
- 12:25Speaker 1: a community college back home after I came back, and
- 12:28Speaker 1: how to take I mean this tells you how far
- 12:30Speaker 1: along I was in school. I take our one oh
- 12:32Speaker 1: one my third year, you know what I mean? That
- 12:34Speaker 1: most people ain't be doing that, Yeah, running behind And
- 12:37Speaker 1: uh it was all for a reason though, because I
- 12:39Speaker 1: learned about this thing one day called the Rose of Jericho,
- 12:42Speaker 1: and I was like, man, that kind of perked my ears.
- 12:45Speaker 1: It's uh it's a um, it's got all these supers Jericho? Right, Yeah,
- 12:50Speaker 1: but this is like, h isn't that? Where was Saul
- 12:54Speaker 1: who was on the way to Jericho when he got blinded?
- 12:57Speaker 1: I'm not sure the Bible, I'm not sure is that Jericho?
- 13:01Speaker 1: Someone type that up? I can't talking room full of pagans. Listen,
- 13:07Speaker 1: there's a guy in the Bible who is uh not cool,
- 13:12Speaker 1: and they blind him, changes his ways? Wasn't he heading
- 13:18Speaker 1: to Jericho? Man? Seth? Really you don't know? Seth? No,
- 13:24Speaker 1: I should know. My grandmother would be upset with me.
- 13:27Speaker 1: The lay some Bible learning on you guys. You take
- 13:31Speaker 1: huge stop talking a US a bit while I lay
- 13:32Speaker 1: some Bible lay. Okay, check this out. We've been talking
- 13:38Speaker 1: a lot about this, uh, this thing called the ass movement,
- 13:43Speaker 1: anti surface shipping movement, getting people to stop going relieving
- 13:49Speaker 1: themselves out in the bury it out in the woods
- 13:52Speaker 1: and long trails and a trailheads and whatnot, just to
- 13:54Speaker 1: generally reduce the Now that the whole world has a dog,
- 13:58Speaker 1: it's bad enough of dogs. Then you add all the
- 14:00Speaker 1: people stuff in there, all the people excrement um. This
- 14:05Speaker 1: guy sends a thing in Dotero from deuterotomy to fourteen
- 14:13Speaker 1: this is in the Bible. You shall have a place
- 14:18Speaker 1: outside the camp, and you shall go out to it,
- 14:22Speaker 1: and you shall have a trowel with you, sit down outside,
- 14:26Speaker 1: you shall dig a hole with it and turn back
- 14:29Speaker 1: and cover up your excrement. For the Lord your God
- 14:33Speaker 1: moves around your camp by night. I like it, dude.
- 14:38Speaker 1: I was like, this is no way that's true. There's
- 14:40Speaker 1: no way that's true. And so I did some searching,
- 14:43Speaker 1: and it is true. And I'll tell you here's another
- 14:46Speaker 1: I was like, is that really true? So I looked
- 14:47Speaker 1: up and here's another translation, same thing. Deuterotomy. This is
- 14:50Speaker 1: from the new International version Deuterotomy to fourteen. Designate a
- 14:57Speaker 1: place outside the camp where you can go to relieve
- 15:00Speaker 1: yourself as part of your equipment, have something to dig with,
- 15:05Speaker 1: and when you relieve yourself, dig a hole and cover
- 15:08Speaker 1: up your excrement. For the Lord your God moves about
- 15:12Speaker 1: in your camp to protect you and to deliver your
- 15:15Speaker 1: enemies to you. Your camp must be holy so that
- 15:19Speaker 1: he not see among you anything indecent and turn away
- 15:23Speaker 1: from you. That's a fact. I bet the dude from
- 15:28Speaker 1: the founder that asked movement, doesn't he know about that?
- 15:31Speaker 1: Was he headed to Jericho Saul, and he changed after
- 15:36Speaker 1: this happened, he changed his name to Paul. The Road
- 15:40Speaker 1: to Jericho. I looked it up. It says Jesus when
- 15:44Speaker 1: he was passing through Jericho. Um, he cured two blind men.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Now yeah, and the Road to Jericho is like this
- 15:54Speaker 1: very dangerous road that was beset by robbers. And is
- 15:57Speaker 1: that your own word? Yep, it is. Um. Yeah, it
- 16:03Speaker 1: was just like a dangerous road and it had something
- 16:05Speaker 1: to do with the Samaritans and the Jews. And I
- 16:09Speaker 1: didn't see anything about Saul or Paul. Yeah, I'm not
- 16:12Speaker 1: seeing soul. No, never mind. But yeah, anyways, you found
- 16:15Speaker 1: out about the rules. It's pretty much this desert desert
- 16:20Speaker 1: plant and meant like like why the word Jericho in
- 16:26Speaker 1: there but the desert plant. Yeah. Yeah, so it's got
- 16:28Speaker 1: all these superstitions, and uh, for me, my writing process
- 16:32Speaker 1: really started. Uh I'm not I don't do it. Uh,
- 16:35Speaker 1: I'm always grew up. I could barely read in front
- 16:37Speaker 1: of the class, always a real shy guy, you know. Um,
- 16:41Speaker 1: And pretty much the way I came into music was natural.
- 16:44Speaker 1: Its therapy and uh, you know, hard times kind of
- 16:47Speaker 1: that's what comes out. And uh that perked my ears
- 16:49Speaker 1: up when I hear hear anything interesting like that. And
- 16:52Speaker 1: that was the first kind of you know, real phrase
- 16:56Speaker 1: or you know, just that play just language. You know
- 16:58Speaker 1: that I don't perks the hair in your years, if
- 17:01Speaker 1: you know what I mean. And so I started reading
- 17:03Speaker 1: into it, and you know, if you put water on
- 17:05Speaker 1: this plant, it comes back to life, and it's got
- 17:07Speaker 1: all these like superstitions, and I was like, that's kind
- 17:10Speaker 1: of like my experience, you know, out in Montanio. If
- 17:14Speaker 1: you read the lyrics, it's, uh, it's pretty much a
- 17:17Speaker 1: poetry about you know, having a second chance in a way,
- 17:20Speaker 1: and uh that gets it up. Um, are you gonna
- 17:24Speaker 1: sing that one later? A different one? I'm anost singing
- 17:26Speaker 1: y'all some new stuff the whole world. Anything that the
- 17:30Speaker 1: world has ever heard has literally been the first songs
- 17:33Speaker 1: that anything that's out is the first songs I wrote.
- 17:36Speaker 1: And since then, um, you know, I've got over eighty
- 17:39Speaker 1: songs I've written last two years. And uh you still fish?
- 17:43Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that's what the dream is to do this
- 17:45Speaker 1: to where we can fish you know all the time.
- 17:47Speaker 1: Are you regarded as like a song factory? That sounds
- 17:50Speaker 1: a lot of music at this point at this point,
- 17:52Speaker 1: I can't pick up a guitar and just play it.
- 17:54Speaker 1: It's always you know, uh, you know, because I hear
- 17:57Speaker 1: things and like words just come out in a way. Um.
- 18:00Speaker 1: And especially it's like building a muscle. Um. I don't know.
- 18:04Speaker 1: I've become obsessed with it keeps me up not but
- 18:07Speaker 1: that's how you get get going. I mean, do you
- 18:09Speaker 1: have peers that are cranking out eighties songs? Most people?
- 18:13Speaker 1: Are you spitting into that cup there? Just a little
- 18:15Speaker 1: bit of grizzly if that's that's if that's that's fine.
- 18:20Speaker 1: Grizzly our friend dirt myth Uh he doesn't choose grizz
- 18:24Speaker 1: he says no, he says, uh no, I got a
- 18:27Speaker 1: good job. He choose what's it you? That was my
- 18:31Speaker 1: original because I was a long cut guy for a
- 18:33Speaker 1: long cough time. The Copenhagen was my favorite. But uh,
- 18:36Speaker 1: they don't make good pouches, you know. And I can
- 18:38Speaker 1: sound check with it. So you got a pouch in area.
- 18:40Speaker 1: You see it right here up there, but nobody ever
- 18:45Speaker 1: knows tucked in there? Well, I know you gotta and
- 18:47Speaker 1: you're spitting into it. Yeah, you'll swallow it. Occasionally we
- 18:52Speaker 1: had a guy right in he works with. He's a
- 18:53Speaker 1: deer researcher. I think he's in Pennsylvania. And he said,
- 18:57Speaker 1: when he goes into that deer pen, you can't bring
- 18:59Speaker 1: your dipping. What was that you said, they'll tear the
- 19:02Speaker 1: pocket right off your jeans to get that dip out
- 19:04Speaker 1: to put that on a commercial. He said, if you
- 19:07Speaker 1: put Levi Garrett in your back pocket, he said, they'll
- 19:09Speaker 1: rip your pants. Starts hanging tree stands. He makes some
- 19:14Speaker 1: like Premos products or something out of that. They'll be
- 19:18Speaker 1: like little pellets as it kind of frowned upon to
- 19:21Speaker 1: be uh, you know in a stand with that. You know,
- 19:24Speaker 1: does that repeale uh anything? I don't know. What do
- 19:26Speaker 1: you think I mean when I when I used to
- 19:30Speaker 1: cheer it, I had no problem being in the standard
- 19:35Speaker 1: in the field with it. Um. I don't know. I
- 19:37Speaker 1: don't think it's laying down that much sin. Yeah, you
- 19:40Speaker 1: think you'll end up catching lip cancer. I'm gonna quit
- 19:46Speaker 1: here soon. Yeah. Yeah, you should get with dirt. You
- 19:49Speaker 1: guys could just hang out and chew. Yeah. We should
- 19:51Speaker 1: have called him up and hand to come over. That's
- 19:53Speaker 1: what I mean. These people got in the East sig bars.
- 19:55Speaker 1: You know, I thought it was a weird idea of
- 19:56Speaker 1: what people just went somewhere and dip you know, kind
- 19:58Speaker 1: of like a dip ball. That's the way, like a
- 20:03Speaker 1: little water. Am most people getting some good sleep, like
- 20:08Speaker 1: a cigar like I remember had through a work thing.
- 20:11Speaker 1: One of the worst things that ever happened. He was
- 20:12Speaker 1: I had to go to a cigar bar and like,
- 20:15Speaker 1: oh my god, that grizzly reminds me of that Ransack
- 20:19Speaker 1: cabin in Alaska because the only thing that wasn't to
- 20:21Speaker 1: our part was a couple of cans of grizzly, and
- 20:24Speaker 1: Buck was thrilled to see that grizzly sitting there. I'll
- 20:28Speaker 1: tell you another interesting about that ran we got. We
- 20:30Speaker 1: were in a we slept in a cabin that had
- 20:32Speaker 1: been a bear had moved into it, and oh my god. Oh,
- 20:34Speaker 1: if you want to go look, go to Instagram. You'll
- 20:36Speaker 1: see a video of this cabin at Stephen Ronella your
- 20:40Speaker 1: scroll back. I mean, this cabin got destroyed, yeah, by
- 20:44Speaker 1: a bear. Um and this bear would bite everything open.
- 20:49Speaker 1: But what's funny is he didn't figure out there's all
- 20:53Speaker 1: these glass jars of salmon, and he bit all the
- 20:57Speaker 1: canned I don't know what it is he bit like
- 20:59Speaker 1: if he was a can of mean beans, he'd chew
- 21:01Speaker 1: it open. The salmon glass, jars of salmon never touched.
- 21:09Speaker 1: Didn't figure out like it blows my mind, and he
- 21:14Speaker 1: put everything open. And the other thing laying on the
- 21:16Speaker 1: ground amongst all this junk is a can of bear
- 21:19Speaker 1: spray that he never sunk a tooth into. Like the
- 21:24Speaker 1: fact that he's smelling through a can that doesn't make sense. Man,
- 21:30Speaker 1: I don't understand how they did with how that bear
- 21:31Speaker 1: did what he did eight coffee. I've had an experience
- 21:35Speaker 1: real close with a with a couple back home, three mom,
- 21:37Speaker 1: bear and two cubs, and you know it's, you know,
- 21:40Speaker 1: real close to us. I got in nice. Sure they
- 21:42Speaker 1: love some sugar cookies that this bear was so good.
- 21:46Speaker 1: He got into a bag of Halloween candy, like fun
- 21:49Speaker 1: sized candy bars. This is something you think he just
- 21:51Speaker 1: eat the candy bar. I don't know. He must have
- 21:53Speaker 1: taken his little claw. He would eat the candy bars
- 21:57Speaker 1: and leave the empty rappers. Man, however, he managed to
- 22:00Speaker 1: do that like little It looked like a human being
- 22:03Speaker 1: opened up all these candy bars and the rappers are gone.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Some stuff he got burned out on like he got
- 22:08Speaker 1: into a bunch of dry pasta but left some dry posta.
- 22:11Speaker 1: But after I was like, I can't handle the dry
- 22:13Speaker 1: posta anymore. Yeah, there's a couple of little packets of folders,
- 22:17Speaker 1: uh single like tea bags, and Steve, Steve used those.
- 22:22Speaker 1: Well I chickened out in the end. Everybody's like, can't
- 22:24Speaker 1: let you got drink that because I use no, because
- 22:27Speaker 1: here's what happened when I opened it up. They had
- 22:29Speaker 1: been corrupted and they had been soaked inside. And then
- 22:32Speaker 1: I was like, who cares? And I was like it
- 22:34Speaker 1: was probably Bear pissed. I don't know. I didn't need him.
- 22:36Speaker 1: I thought it was Buck had some of that. He
- 22:39Speaker 1: had some of that black that black rifle coffee black powder.
- 22:42Speaker 1: He had two of those in his pocket. I didn't
- 22:45Speaker 1: tell anybody about that. I didn't know. I thought you
- 22:47Speaker 1: were drinking that folder stuff. No. So this is kind
- 22:49Speaker 1: of funny because um, we're rafting down the river and
- 22:53Speaker 1: Bucks got a friend that's got a cabin and and uh,
- 22:56Speaker 1: we're gonna go up there, so I don't bring any Bucks. Like, well,
- 23:00Speaker 1: instead of carrying stuff up there, we're gonna hike up
- 23:02Speaker 1: to this cab instead of carrying stuff up there. I'll
- 23:03Speaker 1: replace there's food there, and then I'll make sure to
- 23:05Speaker 1: replace anything that's there. And then I remember Seth being like, man,
- 23:09Speaker 1: I don't know, I feel like we should bring some food.
- 23:11Speaker 1: And I remember shooting him down be like no, man,
- 23:14Speaker 1: we got a whole plan, you know. And we get
- 23:16Speaker 1: up there and it's like yeah, like nothing nothing, no coffee, yeah,
- 23:21Speaker 1: no dinner, no breakfast, nothing. This place was ransack. That's
- 23:25Speaker 1: the worst mindset that I think you're gonna replace. That's like, uh,
- 23:28Speaker 1: I don't know, you don't replay stuff? When he hung over, Hey,
- 23:34Speaker 1: what do you think of this? Right here? That's what
- 23:36Speaker 1: I saw this morning. So we had a guest on,
- 23:39Speaker 1: Bob Reid, who's a Burmese python expert, and I got
- 23:44Speaker 1: talking about snake oil and we're talking about how, you know,
- 23:49Speaker 1: people say a snake oil salesman. Well, it's longer that
- 23:54Speaker 1: I was talking about how these guys we met in
- 23:56Speaker 1: South America were saying that you can take the oil
- 24:01Speaker 1: from what was that snake down there? The Anacondas right
- 24:06Speaker 1: green Ana Connor. I don't know, is this a trip
- 24:08Speaker 1: that I was on. I remember this this one when
- 24:12Speaker 1: your first time down there with anaconda like thirteen sixteen
- 24:16Speaker 1: eighteen foot snakes. And the dude told me two interesting things.
- 24:20Speaker 1: He said, we we walked up to one and he
- 24:29Speaker 1: was explained to me, like what I would call a superstition,
- 24:31Speaker 1: what he would call just the truth. He was saying,
- 24:34Speaker 1: if I touched that snake with my bow, just touch it.
- 24:40Speaker 1: You can touch with a regular stick. But if I
- 24:42Speaker 1: were to touch that snake with my bow, it would
- 24:45Speaker 1: die of very painful death mhm. And I said, like
- 24:48Speaker 1: how long? He said, forty five minutes just from contacting
- 24:53Speaker 1: it with a human bow. And I said, what do
- 24:56Speaker 1: you why would you do that? What do you use
- 24:58Speaker 1: it for? And he said that when you use it
- 25:00Speaker 1: to the fat the oil rendered from the snake to
- 25:04Speaker 1: treat arthritis. And then explained this this Burmese python expert.
- 25:10Speaker 1: And he made me realize something I hadn't put together
- 25:13Speaker 1: is that when you say, like someone's a snake oil salesman,
- 25:17Speaker 1: because he said, people used to attribute snake grease, snake
- 25:21Speaker 1: fat with all these as having great like natural pathic
- 25:25Speaker 1: or homeopathic qualities. Essential old salesman. So then he just
- 25:31Speaker 1: brought us a court. You know that he didn't have
- 25:34Speaker 1: the lid on tight, which is weird because I don't
- 25:36Speaker 1: view this stuff as appetizing. I had a tightened lid
- 25:41Speaker 1: or something to turn court jar of Burmese python oil.
- 25:46Speaker 1: I have a label maker, and I made that label
- 25:49Speaker 1: for display. I like the no ship part. My label
- 25:53Speaker 1: says snake oil, no ship, this is oil from a python.
- 25:58Speaker 1: That's what I was watching uh episode on on Netflix
- 26:02Speaker 1: the other night of when you was down with these
- 26:03Speaker 1: guys that they're using their hand to cast in the river.
- 26:06Speaker 1: I was like, he's definitely saying some snakes in that area.
- 26:09Speaker 1: Do you say any that's that's that area where I
- 26:13Speaker 1: saw these the and not these the anacondas um. Wouldn't
- 26:19Speaker 1: you guys eat that? Like? I find that oil almost repulsive.
- 26:24Speaker 1: I don't. I don't like snakes. I mean not that I
- 26:26Speaker 1: I don't like snakes, and it's not like a big
- 26:27Speaker 1: snake guy. He's that's rendered fat though, right, it's rendered fat.
- 26:33Speaker 1: I'll pass it around. Did he use it well? Did
- 26:39Speaker 1: just for you? Does he like often make he already
- 26:42Speaker 1: had it? He already had it. It's brought me some
- 26:45Speaker 1: of his stash. Did you see that? Did I put
- 26:48Speaker 1: on your desk some yeah, prickly pear. Same guy, I
- 26:56Speaker 1: like that. Put that on my oatmeal this morning. Did
- 26:58Speaker 1: you did I bring you some choked chair? Uh? Yeah, jam,
- 27:02Speaker 1: same guy? Did I bring you some of that honey? No,
- 27:06Speaker 1: it's on your desk, thank you. Different guy. I thought
- 27:10Speaker 1: it was some moon chield. Was like, man, that's a
- 27:12Speaker 1: little early for But what I was saying is it's
- 27:14Speaker 1: so unappetizing to me that I wouldn't be able to
- 27:16Speaker 1: like fry up an egg in that oil. Yeah, that's
- 27:19Speaker 1: on appetising to me too. I definitely would give it
- 27:22Speaker 1: a go. Yeah, I'd do a little teeth did you guys,
- 27:26Speaker 1: just to say, next time you're on the podcast, guess what.
- 27:28Speaker 1: I had a couple of over mediums and pothon oil
- 27:31Speaker 1: this morning. It looks like he could have filtered it
- 27:34Speaker 1: a little better. There's some solids down on the bottom. Yeah,
- 27:37Speaker 1: I don't know. I gotta talk to it. I don't
- 27:39Speaker 1: want to call him a criticize him, be like, hey, man,
- 27:42Speaker 1: thanks a lot, but you know, next time, next time you,
- 27:44Speaker 1: next time you maybe some snake oil that I'll not use.
- 27:47Speaker 1: Put the lid on top, Put the lid on and
- 27:50Speaker 1: Brodi's got some tips. He's got some tipsy as well. Recently,
- 27:53Speaker 1: I recently got some some oil from a good buddy
- 27:56Speaker 1: of mine, and uh, I had some criticism about it,
- 27:59Speaker 1: but I was like, you know, I'm not gonna say
- 28:00Speaker 1: anything because it's hard to Yeah, it's hard to have
- 28:03Speaker 1: a nice big batch of it. It might be a
- 28:06Speaker 1: buddy sitting next to me if you do that. If
- 28:09Speaker 1: you do do it, what you do is um, you
- 28:12Speaker 1: know about a compliment sandwich? Have we covered this? We have,
- 28:16Speaker 1: but it'll give it to me again. A compliment when
- 28:18Speaker 1: you got it, when you get when you need just
- 28:20Speaker 1: need to like give someone some feedback that they're not
- 28:23Speaker 1: could be receptive to you. Compliment him, yes, start positive,
- 28:29Speaker 1: so you'd say, my god, bro, do you look good today? Right?
- 28:33Speaker 1: You're working out? Can you tell me about the basic
- 28:39Speaker 1: so I can do it? Can you tell you the
- 28:40Speaker 1: basic problem? Well, the oil, uh, instead of being snow white,
- 28:46Speaker 1: bear grease, it's got just a little touch of color
- 28:50Speaker 1: to it, and it has a little touch of flavor
- 28:52Speaker 1: to it like it might have like the cracklings might
- 28:55Speaker 1: have been cooked a little bit too long and you know, pudding.
- 28:59Speaker 1: But it's out like that, super clean. Yeah, you know
- 29:03Speaker 1: what I mean. So you'd say, my god, Brody, do
- 29:07Speaker 1: you look good today? I feel like you kind of
- 29:12Speaker 1: screwed that barrel up by over cooking the crack ones.
- 29:18Speaker 1: My god, your kids are nice. That's a comment sam
- 29:22Speaker 1: like three completely unrelated constructive criticism. It's not like I've
- 29:27Speaker 1: got a lifetime experience render and bear fat, you know,
- 29:32Speaker 1: quick news item. I saw that, Like I hesitate to
- 29:35Speaker 1: do this to mention this news story in the news
- 29:39Speaker 1: because it's a type of news that I generally hate,
- 29:41Speaker 1: and it's like, you know, news agencies that that do news.
- 29:48Speaker 1: The point of the news being that the reader will
- 29:51Speaker 1: be annoyed and have the response of like, what's the
- 29:53Speaker 1: world coming to? Right? Yeah, like just how like this
- 30:01Speaker 1: has gone too far? A war on Christmas? You know,
- 30:04Speaker 1: I mean, like like that kind of news, you know
- 30:06Speaker 1: what I mean. This is one of those news stories.
- 30:08Speaker 1: A boy so now that but like now that kids
- 30:10Speaker 1: are at home, like some of you kids are at
- 30:12Speaker 1: home for school, right, and you're doing zoom. So a
- 30:15Speaker 1: little boy in Louisiana is at home in his bedroom
- 30:20Speaker 1: and there's a picture that he's got his shirt, but
- 30:24Speaker 1: he's got like a dress shirt buttoned up to the
- 30:25Speaker 1: top button like he was kidd on the planet um
- 30:28Speaker 1: nine years old. But in his room is his baby
- 30:30Speaker 1: gun and he gets suspended what suspended from zoom? Suspended
- 30:37Speaker 1: from school because in his room is a baby gun
- 30:42Speaker 1: and you can't have guns at school. So seriously, he's
- 30:49Speaker 1: not actually he's going to classes. He's in his bedroom.
- 30:54Speaker 1: The story is like, like I gathered that this is
- 30:57Speaker 1: not a problem, that I think this problem is going
- 30:59Speaker 1: to go away for this boy very quickly. But that
- 31:02Speaker 1: was the initial repercussion. They suspended it. They won't allow
- 31:07Speaker 1: him to He got kicked out of school for having
- 31:11Speaker 1: begun in his bedroom during his online learning. What is
- 31:16Speaker 1: this world coming to? This will not stand next it
- 31:22Speaker 1: will be a war on Christmas. So yeah. Another thing
- 31:26Speaker 1: is this is the last last word? Is last time
- 31:28Speaker 1: I bring this up? But the plot does sticking around
- 31:31Speaker 1: squirrels biting nuts off other squirrels. We got a thing. Listen.
- 31:35Speaker 1: A vet in Australia rode in to say that he
- 31:43Speaker 1: this is not squirrels, it's not America. But he does
- 31:46Speaker 1: find that male rabbits will get in fights and it
- 31:50Speaker 1: can result in testicular injuries. From Byton to the other rabbit.
- 31:58Speaker 1: The plot thickens, so Spencer's gonna have to do some
- 32:02Speaker 1: more research taking to that one. Now here's the other
- 32:07Speaker 1: thing that's not news, but it's I just thought this
- 32:09Speaker 1: was fascinating that was read about the other day. I've
- 32:11Speaker 1: been reading. I don't know why I haven't read this,
- 32:12Speaker 1: like like Osborne Russell's journal. Have you guys read Osborne
- 32:15Speaker 1: Russell's journal. It's kind of like the most one of
- 32:18Speaker 1: the most important historical texts about like the Mountain Men
- 32:22Speaker 1: and the beaver Travis, you read it, dude, I've been
- 32:25Speaker 1: reading reference. I don't. I can't. Like, I feel like
- 32:27Speaker 1: such an idiot for having not like actually read his journal.
- 32:30Speaker 1: It is unbelievable. One, the amount of shootouts those guys
- 32:34Speaker 1: get into into the back and forth and up and
- 32:38Speaker 1: down um hiking. You mean just uh, they're in Salt Lake,
- 32:47Speaker 1: they're in the headwaters of the Snake, They're on the
- 32:50Speaker 1: lower Yellowstone before it's like, who, like, give a quick synopsis.
- 32:56Speaker 1: Who's Osborne Russell. Osborne Russell is a just a dude
- 33:00Speaker 1: who signs on with a fur company, doesn't know ship
- 33:04Speaker 1: um heads out west trap beavers, and keeps a meticulous
- 33:08Speaker 1: journal of where they go and what they do. Oh,
- 33:11Speaker 1: I think he's the guy that just details everything that
- 33:15Speaker 1: happens every day. For No, that's the different dude. Thirty
- 33:19Speaker 1: years later on the Muscle Shell that was called Life
- 33:21Speaker 1: and Death of the Mouth Muscle Shell, Osborne Russell's journal
- 33:24Speaker 1: is like, it's just his journal. Did he hang out
- 33:28Speaker 1: with some of the big names. He travels with Bridger,
- 33:32Speaker 1: so he's in Jim Bridgers camp, writes about that all
- 33:34Speaker 1: the time. He didn't realize, he didn't like have a
- 33:36Speaker 1: way to think that Jim Bridger was whatever. But he's in.
- 33:38Speaker 1: He's traveling with Bridger. He got like a big crew
- 33:41Speaker 1: of trappers, and this main camp moves, and as the
- 33:45Speaker 1: main camp moves, they kind of pick like, Okay, we're
- 33:47Speaker 1: gonna work this river and then go over the past
- 33:49Speaker 1: and work that river. And the main camp moves, and
- 33:51Speaker 1: in there are camp tenders and fur dressers, guy's skin
- 33:55Speaker 1: and flesh and whatnot. And then you got these little
- 33:57Speaker 1: bands of trappers. And so the bands of trappers go
- 34:01Speaker 1: off and do a loop and come down and find
- 34:02Speaker 1: the main camp and check in, and do a loop
- 34:04Speaker 1: and find the man camp and check in, always getting
- 34:07Speaker 1: in skirmishes shooting tons of big horn sheep like they
- 34:11Speaker 1: eat more big horns the places they run into big horns,
- 34:15Speaker 1: you know, talk about seeing a thousand big horns on
- 34:17Speaker 1: the hill, just eating big horns. So many big horns
- 34:22Speaker 1: that they're in one valley and it's hard to get
- 34:26Speaker 1: through the winters. Not enough food, so they decided to
- 34:28Speaker 1: move camp where the whole camp can just live on
- 34:31Speaker 1: big horns. Not There was a tribe name the sheep eaters.
- 34:36Speaker 1: He talks about those guys too. He meets some in
- 34:40Speaker 1: what's now Yellowstone, and he describes how they had no horse.
- 34:44Speaker 1: They had had a horse once that they got from
- 34:46Speaker 1: some other trappers and the horse died. They had a
- 34:49Speaker 1: bunch of panther hides, which he found interesting. They made
- 34:54Speaker 1: most are clothes out of sheep. They didn't use flint
- 34:57Speaker 1: and steel. They used bow drills to start fire. They
- 35:03Speaker 1: had trapped all they said. They killed all the beavers
- 35:05Speaker 1: in the area, but didn't realize that the furs were
- 35:07Speaker 1: valuable and just ate the meat and wish they had
- 35:09Speaker 1: saved him so they could sell the fur. And their
- 35:12Speaker 1: bows were made out of elk horn and sheephorn, and
- 35:15Speaker 1: they were three ft long, and he took like Osborne
- 35:19Speaker 1: Russell like really likes these dudes. And he said they
- 35:24Speaker 1: would travel in small family groups and not like relate
- 35:27Speaker 1: to other is he go into detail about how that
- 35:30Speaker 1: the horn and he doesn't describe no, he doesn't describe it.
- 35:34Speaker 1: But he's like very impressed with these guys. So were
- 35:37Speaker 1: they would it be fair to say they were like
- 35:39Speaker 1: not quite as advanced as some of the other tribes
- 35:42Speaker 1: that were, or they were just kind of living in
- 35:44Speaker 1: a you know what I'm saying. He likes them better.
- 35:49Speaker 1: He likes them a lot, like they likes him better.
- 35:51Speaker 1: It was just very impressed with the ingenuity. Probably what
- 35:55Speaker 1: he was what he seems to impress him most is
- 35:59Speaker 1: by the time he's all there, there had already been
- 36:00Speaker 1: a lot of trade going on, so horses. Everybody had horse.
- 36:04Speaker 1: Like most of the tribes he's encountering and traveling, you know,
- 36:06Speaker 1: they're they're like very friendly with the crow. They traveled
- 36:08Speaker 1: the crow. Most of the tribes he's traveling with have horses,
- 36:13Speaker 1: have firearms, have flint and steel, steel cookware, and so
- 36:18Speaker 1: if you look at like what he's saying about them,
- 36:20Speaker 1: like the things, he's like, oh and they this, and
- 36:22Speaker 1: they this, and they this. It's mostly like he's talking
- 36:25Speaker 1: about the way everybody would have been simply fifty years earlier. Yeah,
- 36:29Speaker 1: they hadn't adopted all that stuff yet, so he caught them.
- 36:33Speaker 1: Could even be like you could almost say that thirty
- 36:37Speaker 1: years earlier, thirty forty years earlier, everyone he would have
- 36:42Speaker 1: So he's just looking at some people that hadn't adopted.
- 36:44Speaker 1: They were living like in the very high country, not
- 36:48Speaker 1: associating down in the lower valleys, and they were like
- 36:52Speaker 1: still living like all primitive goods. And he really dug it. Uh,
- 36:57Speaker 1: he'sawing about. He spends a lot of time at the
- 37:00Speaker 1: crow and he says that when again, man, this is
- 37:06Speaker 1: not from a crow person. This is from a white
- 37:08Speaker 1: dude traveling with the crow, capturing like his understanding of
- 37:13Speaker 1: what's going on. So I'm not telling you that this
- 37:17Speaker 1: is like the truth. I'm saying this is like crow
- 37:20Speaker 1: culture as understood by a white trapper. He said, when
- 37:27Speaker 1: a crow village moves into a new moves camp and
- 37:30Speaker 1: there's buffalo in the vicinity, you can't just go out
- 37:33Speaker 1: and hunt, like, you can't just charge off and spook
- 37:38Speaker 1: everything out like it's part of a concerted effort, and
- 37:42Speaker 1: you have to get like council permission to begin hunting.
- 37:46Speaker 1: If you break this rule, the first offense is your
- 37:48Speaker 1: hunting equipment is destroyed. If you do it again in
- 37:53Speaker 1: your life, your horses are killed, your lodge is destroyed,
- 37:58Speaker 1: and you're beaten. A third offense is death by shooting.
- 38:04Speaker 1: We should have more game laws like that. Dude. They'll
- 38:06Speaker 1: mess around. That's what in Lewis and Clark. I read
- 38:08Speaker 1: some of their journals. What is it? What's the relationship
- 38:10Speaker 1: is this guy? Earlier or after? Well after? Well after? Okay?
- 38:15Speaker 1: Just if you fell asleep on guard? How many you
- 38:17Speaker 1: have fifty sixty lashes? I'd be like, Man, I ain't
- 38:20Speaker 1: going out with y'all boys. I know on the show
- 38:35Speaker 1: I talked before about uh when Stephenson, who spent a
- 38:39Speaker 1: lot of time with He's got this book, My Life
- 38:42Speaker 1: with the Eskimo, and he spent much time with Innuit
- 38:44Speaker 1: hunters in the High Arctic of Canada, and he describes
- 38:46Speaker 1: how people like hunters will have hunting partners and they'll
- 38:50Speaker 1: even be like a hunter and his hunting partner will
- 38:57Speaker 1: be that that they're all left side and right side,
- 39:01Speaker 1: that they're like the left side and right side of
- 39:03Speaker 1: a unit, and when they get something, the left side
- 39:08Speaker 1: of the thing goes to the left side, the right
- 39:13Speaker 1: side of the thing goes to the right side, and
- 39:15Speaker 1: that's how they distribute game amongst person's hunting partner. And
- 39:20Speaker 1: talking about the crow, Osborne Russell explains um, when they're
- 39:28Speaker 1: doing like a collective style hunting, like you know, riding
- 39:30Speaker 1: a herd down and shooting into it, the first person
- 39:33Speaker 1: who arrives at a dead buffalo is entitled to one
- 39:36Speaker 1: third of the meat. If the person who killed the
- 39:40Speaker 1: buffalo is the fourth one on the spot, he only
- 39:44Speaker 1: gets the hide and tongue. There's no way that this
- 39:48Speaker 1: person who killed it can get in any circumstance, can
- 39:51Speaker 1: get any more than one third of the meat if
- 39:55Speaker 1: a second and third person appears before it is placed
- 39:58Speaker 1: on the horse for pack, meaning like you get one
- 40:05Speaker 1: if some if you if you don't get on your
- 40:06Speaker 1: horse by the time other people show up, then it's divided.
- 40:10Speaker 1: They get thirds. So that's interesting. You know what, my buddy,
- 40:16Speaker 1: One time I went to this thing where they're testing
- 40:17Speaker 1: out how effective beer commercials are. And you get a
- 40:20Speaker 1: dial and as you're interested, you turned the dial up
- 40:23Speaker 1: and when you're not interested, turned the dial down. I
- 40:25Speaker 1: wish we should. I wish we had those like from
- 40:29Speaker 1: for you for us, because I can't tell if what
- 40:31Speaker 1: I'm telling you is interesting or not. That was very interesting. Yeah,
- 40:35Speaker 1: that was interesting. Um, we'll not say one top with
- 40:38Speaker 1: him and then then yann he's gotta do something. Uh
- 40:44Speaker 1: A guy. In addition to that snakel a guy sent
- 40:46Speaker 1: me a turkey call made from a turtle shell mm hmm,
- 40:50Speaker 1: which is a famous old thing. I've just got the residents.
- 40:53Speaker 1: Sound good, dude, it's so cool. It's a readier slider
- 40:57Speaker 1: shell and then it's got late glued like to the
- 41:01Speaker 1: bottom carapist. I want to see that. It's super cool, man,
- 41:05Speaker 1: what's the striker? Looked like he made it. It's got
- 41:09Speaker 1: a bone top and them and I don't know what
- 41:12Speaker 1: kind he told me? What kind of would boy cameraber?
- 41:14Speaker 1: What kind of boy do you put on there? But
- 41:15Speaker 1: it sounds good. It's so cool. Yeah. I was shocked
- 41:19Speaker 1: star pick made out of as illegal to have now,
- 41:22Speaker 1: but that's one of the laws, Like yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 41:25Speaker 1: no not me. Yeah, that wouldn't mean that's a pass
- 41:27Speaker 1: down because there it's like a hundred dollar guitar pick,
- 41:30Speaker 1: and I lose guitar picks every day. What uh turtle
- 41:33Speaker 1: show you know? And uh yeah, I'll make a guitar
- 41:37Speaker 1: pick out of a tarpan scale. I don't know, but
- 41:40Speaker 1: because he's a good guitar pick guy from Brian May
- 41:43Speaker 1: from Queen. He used quarters or what's the equivalent, these
- 41:46Speaker 1: old something I don't know quarters for playing. I found
- 41:50Speaker 1: that out the other day and I was like, man,
- 41:51Speaker 1: that's wild. So he every time they're on tour there
- 41:53Speaker 1: his guitar check just goes and gets a saka. These
- 41:56Speaker 1: old quarters he uses and yeah, um, so Yanni's gotta
- 42:03Speaker 1: do uh yeah, he's gotta do a book report about something.
- 42:07Speaker 1: Mm hmm. Brody will probably be able to add to
- 42:10Speaker 1: this much times he spent this because Yannie, Uh, this
- 42:14Speaker 1: is the second report he's giving us. Can you make
- 42:18Speaker 1: a diddy? It goes um Yanni's book reports about videos
- 42:24Speaker 1: and articles or something like that. Yan book reports. Well,
- 42:27Speaker 1: I don't know about I can try. Yeah, what would
- 42:30Speaker 1: you do? It would be like a jingle? Yeah, what
- 42:32Speaker 1: would you like? Imagine it's a show and there's a segment,
- 42:36Speaker 1: you know, and there's a song to precede the segment.
- 42:40Speaker 1: So you're kicking off Yanni's Book Report, which is like
- 42:42Speaker 1: a segment on the show. I'm trying to think I
- 42:46Speaker 1: could do that Yan's Book Report. Man, I can't. I
- 42:51Speaker 1: can't even saying happy birthday. Man, I'm just not good
- 42:55Speaker 1: with little jingles like that. Let's do a quick jingle.
- 42:58Speaker 1: I mean I can try. Yeah, do it. I'll grab
- 43:00Speaker 1: a damn retire to do it. You gotta put your
- 43:01Speaker 1: dip down, you gotta get your chunk of turtle shell out. Oh,
- 43:06Speaker 1: the scale on a turtle shell something like that. Yeah,
- 43:09Speaker 1: I don't think that's illegal to have. Maybe it's certain turtles.
- 43:14Speaker 1: They don't care if you can catch a snap and turtle.
- 43:16Speaker 1: They don't care if you pick a guitar with the scale.
- 43:20Speaker 1: So Yanni's book Yanni's Book Reports. No, it's like Yanni's
- 43:25Speaker 1: Book reports about articles and videos say that, or just play,
- 43:29Speaker 1: just play something. How do you want to do it?
- 43:31Speaker 1: I would sing it and play to it, and it
- 43:33Speaker 1: would be like something to the effect of like it's
- 43:36Speaker 1: time for you know what do you what do you think?
- 43:39Speaker 1: Any Like it's time for Janni's Yeah, Phil, time for kids.
- 43:45Speaker 1: Gather around, Yeah, gather round, it's time for Yanni. Yeah.
- 43:50Speaker 1: Do you remember a book reports from school? They were
- 43:53Speaker 1: boring and sucked, But this is different. Book report about
- 43:56Speaker 1: a video. I don't know funking work with that. I'm trying.
- 44:03Speaker 1: It's chest with molesters here, he'd actly, he'd take someone
- 44:06Speaker 1: else's idea and act like you did it himself. Well,
- 44:11Speaker 1: you gotta put that thing on there. I'm just gonna
- 44:12Speaker 1: try to get you know what that's called. It's called ok.
- 44:20Speaker 1: I just don't know how to make something jingly. That's
- 44:23Speaker 1: kind of the way I plays like, I don't know
- 44:25Speaker 1: real date. I'm trying to think of a way to
- 44:27Speaker 1: make it, to make it deeport. Oh, I like it.
- 44:33Speaker 1: That already sounds good. Yeah, I'll just put some lyrics
- 44:41Speaker 1: into it. Yeah the gold Hit him with that, that's perfect.
- 44:50Speaker 1: Ill do a clean one. Okay, So we're gonna we're
- 44:53Speaker 1: gonna do Yanni segment. Wow two? Yeah, hit him with
- 45:10Speaker 1: the self spoken Yeah, better be really good. All right, boy,
- 45:15Speaker 1: I'll try. Man, that's what I'm bad with. Oh No,
- 45:18Speaker 1: that was perfect cause I was trying to take it
- 45:19Speaker 1: down the whole other avenue. Man, it was a lot
- 45:21Speaker 1: worse than that. People all the time it's like, can
- 45:24Speaker 1: you play Happy Birthday? And it's like, man, I don't know,
- 45:27Speaker 1: you know, like I ain't good with that, you know
- 45:29Speaker 1: what I mean? You know that John Pryan John Priyan's
- 45:32Speaker 1: live album which he got one. He's like, he says,
- 45:36Speaker 1: I learned those three chords when I was fourteen, and
- 45:40Speaker 1: I guess I just never decided to learn any more
- 45:42Speaker 1: of them. Yeah, that's what they always say is nobody
- 45:44Speaker 1: knows what key that Happy Birthday is in. It's always
- 45:46Speaker 1: different every time, no matter how you get around, because
- 45:49Speaker 1: nobody knows how to easily sing. You know that guy
- 45:51Speaker 1: still collects World. She's off that song. You can't like
- 45:52Speaker 1: put that song in the movie. Really no, Wow, it's
- 45:56Speaker 1: a covered song. It's a covered song, and get a
- 45:58Speaker 1: license that sunbitch and song go ahead. That's interesting. It
- 46:02Speaker 1: might not be true. I gotta say this is an
- 46:05Speaker 1: interesting true I think it went. It went like, what's
- 46:09Speaker 1: what's the term for it? When something loses its copyright
- 46:12Speaker 1: that happens. It happened like four or five years ago,
- 46:14Speaker 1: but like up until then it was I just said,
- 46:16Speaker 1: it might not be true, so so you can republic domain.
- 46:21Speaker 1: That's what I'm trying having birthday is now public public domain.
- 46:23Speaker 1: God can breathe easy. You can play that at your
- 46:26Speaker 1: next show, and I have to worry you put it
- 46:27Speaker 1: on your next album even enough to worry about put
- 46:29Speaker 1: that little Johnnie segment in the album. If people are
- 46:34Speaker 1: gonna be waiting now every episode, they're gonna wait to
- 46:36Speaker 1: hear those chords. Oh yeah, did you get a good
- 46:39Speaker 1: recording of that so we can use and get you
- 46:40Speaker 1: a better one too? Can we license at all? Yeah? Yeah,
- 46:44Speaker 1: I'll give you a better one when a half time.
- 46:45Speaker 1: I'm just not I don't know. That's ah, well, do
- 46:48Speaker 1: you justice? Um? What was the last one that I did?
- 46:53Speaker 1: You did a book report on that There's Links or
- 46:56Speaker 1: Bobcat that went along ways away. Oh yeah, there was
- 46:59Speaker 1: that one. But you're I think you're incorrect with saying
- 47:01Speaker 1: that's only only my second one, because I did one
- 47:03Speaker 1: about that girl that had that they found the gum
- 47:07Speaker 1: and there was there was the preserved Oh yeah, yeah
- 47:11Speaker 1: with Jesse Griffiths, and Jesse Griffins was saying he wanted
- 47:14Speaker 1: to marry that girl. Yeah, they found the remains, that's right,
- 47:18Speaker 1: that was in Texas. Yeah, they found yeah, and she
- 47:21Speaker 1: had eaten Hazel nuts and Mallard duck. Yeah, from those
- 47:26Speaker 1: articles were a lot longer. This article here, it's a
- 47:30Speaker 1: video might be literally Yeah did you watch the video?
- 47:35Speaker 1: I sent it to you to watch. Yeah, well, CPW,
- 47:38Speaker 1: I like what you guys are doing. This is all great,
- 47:40Speaker 1: but I'm sure a lot of UH State wildlife agencies
- 47:44Speaker 1: struggled with this. But whoever put the media together for this,
- 47:48Speaker 1: they were in love with this. One go pro shot
- 47:51Speaker 1: that they have with the underside of the plane is
- 47:53Speaker 1: this guy turned into a compment sandwich because started start,
- 47:58Speaker 1: you got a backward I'm gonna I'm gonna knock them
- 48:01Speaker 1: down first, then I'll build the build them up. But
- 48:04Speaker 1: uh yeah, it was like a nine minute video and
- 48:07Speaker 1: uh I think they could have gotten the point across
- 48:09Speaker 1: in two or three cheese. Man just comes out just
- 48:13Speaker 1: swinging producer, and that's what happens in this job. Man,
- 48:17Speaker 1: you have a real hard time watching stuff and not
- 48:20Speaker 1: looking at it. Um you know with that sort of
- 48:22Speaker 1: I yeah, no hardcore producing. You feel the same way.
- 48:27Speaker 1: There's a lot of stuff you don't have. What I
- 48:28Speaker 1: would have said, like, man, those guys are handsome in
- 48:33Speaker 1: that video and their kids are really nice. Look you know,
- 48:38Speaker 1: I spent a big decade uh hunting and fishing in Colorado,
- 48:43Speaker 1: and I have a lot of respect and feel that
- 48:45Speaker 1: the CPW does a great job managing their wildlife resources
- 48:49Speaker 1: over there. They take it serious. And well that's another
- 48:54Speaker 1: cannon wors. We want to look at that video show
- 49:00Speaker 1: you guys want to know what this GoPro shot is.
- 49:02Speaker 1: It's uh, it's the cameras mounted on like the strut
- 49:06Speaker 1: of the plane, pointed towards the tail end, and like
- 49:09Speaker 1: halfway between the strut um and the rear wheel, let's
- 49:17Speaker 1: attached to the to the very back end of the
- 49:19Speaker 1: of the tail of the plane, there is what looks
- 49:22Speaker 1: to be like a it's basically just a shoot. An
- 49:25Speaker 1: outcoming from the shoot is like at this point it
- 49:28Speaker 1: looks just like a ball of vapor which used to
- 49:30Speaker 1: be water before the shoot was open, and inside of
- 49:32Speaker 1: it you can see it looks like a little black specks,
- 49:35Speaker 1: but what they are is inch and a half long trout.
- 49:38Speaker 1: They're falling out of an airplane. This, folks, is how
- 49:42Speaker 1: Colorado CPW stocks their high country lakes is by airplane.
- 49:49Speaker 1: Blows my mind. Oh you have never heard this. I'd
- 49:52Speaker 1: heard of it, but you know, like sometimes you hear
- 49:54Speaker 1: stuff without really thinking about yeah, you know, I mean
- 49:57Speaker 1: like you're like, oh, whatever, I accept it, sure, but
- 50:00Speaker 1: hadn't like actually thought like, well what am I accepting?
- 50:03Speaker 1: What it? What it? What goes into it? Meaning that
- 50:07Speaker 1: they would land and be like oh cool, I'm alive
- 50:12Speaker 1: and this like just like watching that be I'm like,
- 50:14Speaker 1: how in the world are they not just dead or dead?
- 50:16Speaker 1: I know? Yeah, Well, they do a good job explaining
- 50:19Speaker 1: why they're not dead or dead, which is that they're
- 50:22Speaker 1: only an inch and a half long, so they don't
- 50:24Speaker 1: have a lot of mass to them. They get down
- 50:27Speaker 1: to they'd like to be at a hundred feet I
- 50:29Speaker 1: think they said the space is a hundred fifty feet
- 50:32Speaker 1: off the surface of the water when they drop them,
- 50:35Speaker 1: and because there's so little, there's just a lot of
- 50:38Speaker 1: you know, air resistance, and they're not like they're not
- 50:40Speaker 1: plummeting like a you know, an object with more master
- 50:45Speaker 1: You can kill somebody with a five pound trout, well,
- 50:50Speaker 1: and the five pound trout would also hit the water
- 50:52Speaker 1: and probably explode just like you would. But these suckers, yeah,
- 50:56Speaker 1: they they talk about how they measure them out. Is
- 51:00Speaker 1: that in your report? Uh, you mean about how they
- 51:02Speaker 1: just how it's like they know per mill leader like
- 51:07Speaker 1: a bucket, like a measuring cup. Yeah, yeah, that's what
- 51:11Speaker 1: I'm saying. But they haven't figured out they know by
- 51:13Speaker 1: a volume measurement how many fish are in there, so
- 51:16Speaker 1: they know that whatever it is, there's three hundred inch
- 51:19Speaker 1: and a half trout in a court of of inch
- 51:22Speaker 1: and a half trout mass, right, So that I got
- 51:24Speaker 1: they're counting them. Yeah, but yeah, they they go and
- 51:29Speaker 1: get the row from high country lakes. So it's not
- 51:34Speaker 1: like they're like making like putting in a non native fish, right.
- 51:36Speaker 1: They go and get row from fish that are natives
- 51:40Speaker 1: to Colorado, bring that down to a hatchery, raise them
- 51:44Speaker 1: up till they're inch and a half long, and then
- 51:46Speaker 1: basically transport those back up to these high country lakes.
- 51:50Speaker 1: But they're putting them in some lakes that never had
- 51:52Speaker 1: trout that may I didn't catch that in this article
- 51:56Speaker 1: or the video, but I think they do. I think
- 51:58Speaker 1: they do stock some lakes that never had a trout population.
- 52:03Speaker 1: It's incredible. It's a lot of effort. Yeah, And because
- 52:07Speaker 1: they're saying that, they think too that because the head
- 52:11Speaker 1: has a little more mass is heavier than the rest
- 52:14Speaker 1: of the body that they actually probably eventually end up
- 52:17Speaker 1: pointing straight down and they enter the water that ways,
- 52:20Speaker 1: as opposed to landing flat on their sides. Huh did
- 52:24Speaker 1: they get into what um Mitch Petrie sentences, Did they
- 52:30Speaker 1: get into what uh survival rate? Did not did not
- 52:36Speaker 1: catch that, but they said it's very, very efficient compared
- 52:39Speaker 1: to what it would take otherwise to stock these high
- 52:42Speaker 1: country lakes, which would basically be by having to pack
- 52:45Speaker 1: either on horseback or human back because a lot of
- 52:48Speaker 1: this is wilderness. You know, there's no roads going up there,
- 52:51Speaker 1: so you have to pack you know, aerated containers of water, um,
- 52:56Speaker 1: which is takes a lot. Yeah, I see actually seen
- 52:59Speaker 1: videos of them pack can trout in on horseback? Well, yeah,
- 53:02Speaker 1: you remember Mike Rule, but he was telling us something
- 53:06Speaker 1: about like can they air dropped trout into a wilderness area?
- 53:11Speaker 1: I feel like you can't because remember Mike the helicopter thing,
- 53:15Speaker 1: and they couldn't land the helicopter. They do the helicopter
- 53:19Speaker 1: thing about home where I'm from on the Chattooga where
- 53:21Speaker 1: Deliverance was actually filmed. The helicopter man to stock trout.
- 53:27Speaker 1: Because Mike Rules talking about but that was the whole thing.
- 53:30Speaker 1: It was about the whole helicopter deal land in helicopters
- 53:33Speaker 1: and wilderness area you'd have a special permit. So you
- 53:37Speaker 1: think you can air drop a trout? I think so.
- 53:39Speaker 1: I used to fish lakes, alpine lakes in Colorado and
- 53:42Speaker 1: wilderness areas that for sure got stocked this way they
- 53:46Speaker 1: I just looked it up here. They stocked beavers in
- 53:49Speaker 1: the frank Church. Yeah. Cal's covered that and we've talked
- 53:52Speaker 1: about it, and that happened like oh time in and
- 53:58Speaker 1: none of this surprises me after this one of those
- 54:01Speaker 1: being real successful. Oh really, Yeah, sired like a whole
- 54:05Speaker 1: population of beavers. The Idaho uh uh Fishing Game has
- 54:11Speaker 1: a video of it on here. Yeah, i'd heard Cal
- 54:14Speaker 1: talked about that. I had heard about that, and they
- 54:16Speaker 1: brought some into re established populations in the frank Church
- 54:19Speaker 1: after guys like Osborne Russell killed them all. But um,
- 54:24Speaker 1: but this trout thing is just the thing that's always
- 54:26Speaker 1: going on, Like, don't go how many how many lakes?
- 54:28Speaker 1: How many lakes do they do? Uh? Three thirty lakes
- 54:33Speaker 1: and Boulder, Grand Jackson, and Larmer Counties, which draw northern
- 54:37Speaker 1: part of the state. Yeah, the Boulder County ones. I'm
- 54:40Speaker 1: sure I fished some of those in the Indian Peaks builderness.
- 54:43Speaker 1: Probably can you think of a utro, Yeah, he's doing
- 54:48Speaker 1: on one. I would just probably do like a like
- 54:53Speaker 1: a quicker, did he and then say, um, that was
- 54:58Speaker 1: that's all, folks, that's a oaks. Um. What was interesting,
- 55:04Speaker 1: and they did a nice way of getting out of
- 55:06Speaker 1: their little article here, is that they decided to add
- 55:08Speaker 1: in that that from when they're in an inch and
- 55:10Speaker 1: a half long, it takes them two years to become
- 55:13Speaker 1: ten inches long, which is which is the minimum size
- 55:17Speaker 1: limit to keep a trout in the state of Colorado.
- 55:20Speaker 1: So don't go rushing out there right now, folks, you can't.
- 55:23Speaker 1: It's not like back in uh and the Carolina Taylor
- 55:26Speaker 1: was just talking about there's not much to catch there
- 55:29Speaker 1: right now, but in two years two years is an
- 55:32Speaker 1: inch and a half to ten inches. I would never
- 55:35Speaker 1: guess that. I think it's because it's lakes are so still.
- 55:37Speaker 1: A lot of them are sterile. They just grew there
- 55:39Speaker 1: and they have such a short growing season. They're us No,
- 55:42Speaker 1: I would say that have taken five years. Oh open
- 55:48Speaker 1: those sterile ass, cold ass, and remember reading something about
- 55:51Speaker 1: that in the hut. That's usually. I've seen some some
- 55:53Speaker 1: fly guys that get these real remote you know, alpon
- 55:56Speaker 1: lakes and they're catching smaller trout and it's like, you know,
- 56:00Speaker 1: you know, home fish are covering nice months a year.
- 56:04Speaker 1: You know. I think that periodically win or kill, which
- 56:08Speaker 1: is why they stock them this way, Like every few
- 56:10Speaker 1: years they'll restock a lake because they win or kill.
- 56:14Speaker 1: That's why they do at home. They summer killed at home.
- 56:16Speaker 1: It's too hot. Uh, we just had our Oh you
- 56:23Speaker 1: got the ultro? Yeah, can you heit real quick? Yeah? Man,
- 56:29Speaker 1: tell you are really playing ball. I'm trying. I'm trying
- 56:32Speaker 1: to appreciate, appreciate. I would I would not go in
- 56:36Speaker 1: a wildly different direction for the ultro. I was like,
- 56:40Speaker 1: your manager, oh go in the water direction or don't
- 56:46Speaker 1: whatever whatever comes to your mind. Where everything. My kids
- 56:49Speaker 1: are having to do their first book report touchtles, but
- 56:52Speaker 1: it's like power point now, like they have to do
- 56:54Speaker 1: slides and pictures and that. Yeah, it's not we had
- 56:58Speaker 1: to do. But we were talking the other day how
- 57:01Speaker 1: you have to have an end, you know, and she's like, well, fine,
- 57:04Speaker 1: it's gonna write the end. So there's that slide. Yeah,
- 57:09Speaker 1: I think you can keep it simple. Keep it simple,
- 57:12Speaker 1: all right? When I because when I'm hearing is like
- 57:14Speaker 1: I'm we either play something a little to to you know, um,
- 57:19Speaker 1: I'm hearing like when I'm hearing a little ditty is
- 57:21Speaker 1: something like, you know, something funky y'all want? Oh no,
- 57:26Speaker 1: that sounds a great outro. Huh you pulled out a
- 57:30Speaker 1: little closer seth there too. Okay, So he does his
- 57:34Speaker 1: book report video really really important. Well, you gotta say something.
- 57:47Speaker 1: Oh forgot about that? What should I say? Thank you? Johnnie.
- 57:51Speaker 1: It's a great book report and it's kind of like
- 57:56Speaker 1: that free Pluto TV like news segment you saw in
- 57:59Speaker 1: high school that kind of you know that kind of
- 58:01Speaker 1: I don't remember that, but I got you. Oh man,
- 58:15Speaker 1: that puts a nice rap on it. Man, if you
- 58:16Speaker 1: are happy with that, I'm happy. That was great. That
- 58:19Speaker 1: was great. We just had um youth. Uh does a
- 58:25Speaker 1: youth duck season? I think a lot of states do this, right, Yeah,
- 58:29Speaker 1: youth in my home state of Michigan, Youth dear season
- 58:34Speaker 1: is such a thing that I was texting with a
- 58:37Speaker 1: buddy mind Tim back home, and he's sending me trail
- 58:39Speaker 1: camp pictures of box and he's he's not joke when
- 58:42Speaker 1: he said this. He says, I hope these two make
- 58:45Speaker 1: it through youth season. Yeah, Like there's a lot of
- 58:51Speaker 1: people that do you know that like hunt through their kids. Yeah,
- 59:00Speaker 1: they're like, oh but like that one, that one, Yeah
- 59:05Speaker 1: that makes sense, you can picture it. Parents are like
- 59:07Speaker 1: that with everything. If you found a giant buck and
- 59:09Speaker 1: yet youth your seeson coming up, of course you can
- 59:11Speaker 1: be like, no, listen, junior, see I'm playing this game.
- 59:15Speaker 1: I'm playing on low. Like I'd almost be like, no,
- 59:19Speaker 1: you can't shoot that buck, just to get him started
- 59:21Speaker 1: out right, Yeah, you duck. And I took my boy
- 59:25Speaker 1: out to a friend of mine's property who has like
- 59:29Speaker 1: a beauty like a water fowl property. He is a
- 59:33Speaker 1: duck fanatic and has like a sweet property for hunting
- 59:39Speaker 1: ducks on maybe one of the sweetest ones in the mean,
- 59:43Speaker 1: probably like one of the coolest duck things. It's a
- 59:47Speaker 1: great spot. And he didn't And what was kind of
- 59:50Speaker 1: funny is I remember him saying like now and then
- 59:52Speaker 1: they have like a little youth opener event or something.
- 59:55Speaker 1: So I was like enquiring because he said something like, oh,
- 59:58Speaker 1: you know, when you kick gets all or whatever. I thought.
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: He said we had a youth open event. I inquired
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: with him about what that was the thing, and he said,
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: why wouldn't even be in town, but if you want
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: to take your boy out there, so no one's around,
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: and like the ducks have been shot at all year, right,
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: it ain't even like regular season, Like no, you don't
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: hear any shots anywhere on youth duck opener. And we
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: put decoys out in dark and we got there fifteen
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: minutes early and it was like legal light with sixty
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: and he's just like, like very interesting in what time
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: it was, because some ducks are landing out in front
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: of us, and at this point no different than you
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: know most folks we hunt with very eager for it
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: to turn the right time. And I'm like, just to
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: kick him off. I allow him to, uh, we have
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: one right out in front us, and I'm like, okay,
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: you know, you can go ahead and in Arkansas, you know,
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: and he are and he like snakes the barrel out
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: of the blind in Arkansas, this duck nevery moves, you know.
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: And then I'm like, hey, that's that's that's that, Like
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: you got one now, it's you're gonna learn how to
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: hit him out of the air, you know. And he
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: just the one duck's coming in and I'm like, hey,
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: go you know, but the ducks aren't that wise. Yeah,
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: they're not spooky yet. So he like drags it out
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: long enough for basically the duck is like landed by
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: the time he shoots and gets that duck. Then a
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: while later one just comes in from behind us and
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: before he can get on it lands in the thing.
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: And I said, hey, listen, now here's what you're gonna do.
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: Get ready, I want you to step out of this
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: blind and go jump it yo hey or whatever and
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: jump it and shoot it flying away and practice that.
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: Don't want to jump, no, he just seeks out there,
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: hey boom. But then then I was getting little irritated
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: with him because he's shooting sitting ducks because I was saying, yeah,
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: because it's like it's like, you know, you know, our friend,
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: like he's right, yeah, he's like he likes he likes all,
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: he appreciates the sort of he likes ducks done. The
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: duck wait like that, know, but I think he gives
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: he probably gives everybody a pass. He was very excited,
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: but I was also like, every first duck I've ever
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: heard of has been shot on the water. He shot
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: his first duck on the water. I thought it would
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: be good for him to take this opportunity of ample
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: shooting to learn how to do some wing shooting because
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: later in the year ducks aren't gonna do this anymore. Yeah,
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: and he shot plenty of pigeons out of the air,
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: so he's got some wings, street pigeons, clay pigeons. I'm like, take, like,
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: there's birds flying, Let's take the opportunity in a stress
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: free environment, you being the only gun in the blind
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: to do some wing shooting. Anyhow, eventually I look and
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: here comes four Canadas and you know, like just they're
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: flying so slow that it looks like they couldn't stay
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: in the air, and they're coming at us, you know,
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: and like later to season be like, well, surely they'll
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: the dec aways all flair him, or they'll lift up high.
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: And they keep coming and I'm looking at like coming
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: and coming, and I'm like, oh my god, he's gonna
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: get like the world's like, you know, twenty five yards
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: off the deck, like flying unbelievably slowly directly over our
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: head and uh, he pulls up boom, just drops one.
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: I said, hold, I said, holding out from his bill
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: right when you shoot, and he boom, just drops one.
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: And I was stunned. He wasn't even kind of stunned,
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: but I was totally stunned. And then he shoots again
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: and he's like, I got that other one, and I'm
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: and I'm like, I just you know, I never listen
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: to anything he says, so I didn't believe him that
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: he got the other one. And that's just in one
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: of her now at the other and we got the
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: goose and took pictures and had all kinds of good times.
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: He keeps talking about getting the other one, getting the
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: other one, and I'm like, where is it, you know, geese.
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: It's like a big pond out in front. There's no
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: goose laying on it. And we get all done hunting
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: and we go over and he's still talking about it.
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: We go there and there's that goose running away, jumped
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: up in the bushes, and we're gonna start listening to
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: him because one day we're doing some we're catching some
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: beavers for a guy friend of ours, and we walk
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: out of our friends place and my kids like there's
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: a coyote and then looking out seeing any Kyle and
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: I'm like, Jimmie, come on, caught that crap out. He
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: turns around like there's a weasel, and I'm like, James,
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: listen man that look. I was like, oh, there's a weasel. No,
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: I instinctively don't believe them. I don't know what it is.
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: He's seeing stuff you're not you're you're maybe you're you're
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: visual acuity is fading. That absolutely is man. So yet
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: last night we took his water fowl and we cut
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: up one of the geese. So we caught up two
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: brass and we're brining it for marinating it for jerky.
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: We took the legs of all the geese and the
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: legs of all the duck and we're curing that for Confie.
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: And then he wants to save the rest just for
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: regular dinner eating. So he's kind of working all those projects.
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: He's measuring out all his stuff. Nice, yeah, acting very irritated,
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: irritated about what they don't want to do. The work part. Oh,
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: he doesn't know. He's a trigger man now, trigger man.
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: He's like he's like a gun writer. Trigger man. What
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: about just general uh, like gutting and measuring, like dry
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: spice is not his thing? Yeah, not his thing. Did
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: you guys pluck you know what? We started to pluck him,
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: but it's so early in the year, like you can't
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: barely tell. You know, this early in the year, you
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: can't barely tell a green head. Yeah, um, because you know,
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: they just molted and we started to pluck them. One
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: just thin, it's just skin, very little fat. And then
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: the geese were okay, but the ducks are very little
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: fat and all that pin feather just it wasn't happening.
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: We had to just pull we just we just pulled him. Yep,
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: skinned him. I think you gotta wait a little bit.
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: It's like canna last. They hunt ducks so early, you
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: know up there, the ducks are all just like brown ducks.
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: It's so hard to tell what the hell is going on.
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: M Are these two? You think these are just resident birds?
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: You guys are hunting for sure? Yeah, they're not mine,
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: for sure. I wouldn't be surprised. A lot of these birds.
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: Some of these birds hatched out of the egg on
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: the very hatched out of an egg on the very
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: place of your home. So Brody issue report about your
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: bear hunting, your bear hunting adventures. It was good. It
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: was super short. Yeah, I was like, you sent me
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: a picture of bearing. I'm like, Bahamas, he's still at home. Yeah.
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: I drove from I left Bozeman at like, I don't know,
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: five thirty in the morning. So it's you know, twelve eleven,
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: twelve hours to get to where I was hunting. Droll
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: to collar Yep, Colorado. Hauled wolf down there, turned it
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: loose probably yep. Exactly a great big one um wolf.
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: But Canadianadian super Bowl they're already there. They're having pups
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: in Colorado. Anyway. Um. Yeah, I got to where I
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: was gonna camp, set up camp. It's about six in
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: the evening by that point. Hiked up to a little
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: spring fed water hole that was probably like got up
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: there at like seven seven. Yeah, only taken a nap
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: by now. I don't mind driving usually I don't mind it.
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: Um and and it's like it was good to get
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: out and hike after being that truck you know. Um anyway,
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: sat down I was gonna try filming it. And before
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: I could even get the little DSLR out um, I
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: saw and three cubs rolled in and they messed around
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: for ten minutes or so, and then she started getting
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: real nervous, and I had when you say messed around,
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: like the cubs were like fighting and playing in the
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: pond and she was drinking water. They're just like chilled out,
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: you know. Just it was cool. It was on the
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: shady side of the mountains, so I think they're just
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: in no rush, you know, to enjoy themselves. So that
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: was fun watching them. But then she got all nervous
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: and started huffing at her cubs and one cub ran
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: up like took off. That was I guess the smart one,
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: and the other two lingered and she pushed him up
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: into the timber, and the wind was in my face,
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: so I was like, man, there might be a boar
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: coming in. And sure enough, like a minute later, a
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: big jet black boar came in and I shot him.
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: Was that boar up wind of her? Yes, m yeah.
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: The wind was kind of for me, it was quartering
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: left or right, so she was kind of The pond
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: is at the base of this hill, so that wind
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: was hitting the pond and then going up and he
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: came from up above her. But man, she did not
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: want to mess around with that boar because she had
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: young cubs, like the little teeny puppy sized cubs. And yeah,
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: that was my hunt. And that's that's the three jars
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: of barre oil oil you gave me? How many jars
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: you end up with? How he gave me a little
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: teeny jars? I ended up? Yeah, half court jars. Um.
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: I ended up with like three and a half gallons total. Yeah,
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: we're gonna gallons quarts total? I think, does it make
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: you happier? Sad that I gave one of those? My
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: friend Laura happy? You know what I did? I took
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: beats out of the garden and um and carrots out
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: of the garden and and roasted them in that bear
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: grease the same way you put olive oil on him.
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: Put that bear grease on. It's clean, It's like it's
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: you know, I've been doing everything like that potatoes in
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: the oven, said, just put some bargrease on it. Wasn't
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: really happy with that bargheras made. Apparently not I can
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: redistribute that well, Um no, I got plenty of it
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: to share. We couldn't. I couldn't go through all that stuff.
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: Has anybody done cookies? Yet that's what I was just
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: gonna say. I've done. I've done puff pastry with it
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: in the past. Yeah, I haven't done any baking. I
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: don't like to bake, though, I kind of quit. It's
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: kind of a long process, but it's easy. I think
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: what Joannice was talking about is if you get it
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: too hot, or if you, like you said, go too
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: long on those cracklings, because you want to squeeze like
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: every bit of fat out of those things. And I
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: think you've got to give up at some point when
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: you're rendering it. Well, you know what people do? What
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: I wonder I shouldn't say what people do. I know
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: that you put a candy thermometer in there. I know.
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: I've read processes for doing it where you actually do
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: it in your oven so you have a better grip
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: on the town. But you need to have oven that's
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: reliable at low town. And I think it might but
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: have heard people say, like, set the oven and put
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: it in there, but with a candy thermometer, because then
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: you can go for hours and hours and hours and
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: not spike and not have temperature spikes. Yeah, but I've
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: tried that, but I don't know. I haven't really calibrated it.
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: But I don't know that ovens do a great job
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: of like holding. I don't know if they do a
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: great job of holding a low attempt like one seventy,
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: but never messed with it. Um. I think probably if
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: you ground it up, it might render out a little
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: better because I just cubed it. You know. That's a
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: good idea. Grind it and render it. You'd have to
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: do it when that stuff's real cold, because it has
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: like a low melting point. Like when I was skinning
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: that bear. It was probably I don't know, it's in
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: the seventies. It was hot and like that stuff melting
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: at yeah, yeah, you know what. It would be a
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: good idea. Man, take that snake oil here, do a
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: taste test, put it in a little jar and right
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: air oil on it. Then give it to someone and
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: then later be like, hey, man, how'd you like to
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: have bar oil? They'll send it to Clay Newcomb. See
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: if they're like, that was the best ship I've ever
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: eaten my entire life. Then well know, and my joints
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: don't hurt anymore. My rheumatism cleared right up. See Osborne
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: Russell suffers horrible rheumatism. Did he use snake oil? No,
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: because but they don't have waiters, the trapping, oh, the
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: end of the winter, trapping in spring, no waiters. So
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: he would talk about in the cold weather, just the
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: horrible ache was spending all those years in the water
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: with no just getting used to being I bet your
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: plenty of them didn't cheeze tough, tough dudes. So what
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: else about your Is it bear meat? Good? Yeah? Man,
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: it's great. You know there's probably eating those acorns down there,
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: he had. I think you had just switched to him
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: the berries had It was a drought down in Colorado
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: so that it was like right at the tail end
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: of berry season, and they're all dried up, most of them.
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: And you know when oftentimes when not not that I
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: have a bunch of experienced shooting bears, but they'll often
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: let out a little turd when you shoot them. And
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: his was that pasty, creamy kind of tan acorn poop.
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: So he's not familiar with because I don't spend a
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: lot of time in the acorn areas. I think that's
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: why the bears get big in Colorado, man, because berries,
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: And then they switched to those acorns and then if
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: they're lucky, they find a carcass or two gambles open. Yeah,
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: oak brush, yeah, huh. I killed a deer and Tuskigee
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: National Forest in Alabama one time. Um My brother was
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: going to grad school down in Auburn and he's discovered
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: like the great deer hunting down there. And one time
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: he was getting like five deer year down there, and
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: we one time, I'll a greyhound bus from Montana to
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: Alabama the hunt deer and we all got a buck.
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: We're there for like I don't know, maybe a week
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: Christmas break, and we all killed a buck on Tuskegee
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: National Forest. I remember sitting up in a magnol your
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: tree hunting deer. But anyways, shot a buck and pulled
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: the stomach out. It was like a giant marble bag.
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: It was just full of like he hadn't even chewed
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: and swallowed. Like I almost killed a dog on that trip,
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: on accident, not almost. I got down and got ready.
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: We're like walking along. I'm looking down a power cut
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: and I'm like, there's a deer. It was a great dane.
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: Like what are the chances of that? Man? Yeah? The
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: question I have is did you carry a gun on
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: the Greyhound with like? Yeah, And I was so paranoid, man,
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: I took it apart. I did that twice, super paranoid,
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: took it apart and put it in a duffel bag.
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: I bet you couldn't get away with that these days.
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: A very paranoid, very very paranoid. But it worked out,
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: you know what I'm telling a lie. I took my
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: shotgun on the Greyhound to hunt ducks when we hunted deer.
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: I was lying. I didn't do that. I didn't bring heap.
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: I must used Danny. I don't know what it was.
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: I took a shotgun when we the first time he
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: went down there to hunt, or maybe it's a second time.
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: One time I went down there to hunt ducks. One
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: time I went down to hunt deer. I took a shotguns.
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: Like two and a half day greyhound ride. We're seeing that?
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: Ever happened to me? Yeah, it sounds like it, Taylor,
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: probably just right about four or five six songs. Yeah,
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: I'm hearing some good stuff. You gotta dip in now,
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: I mean, I guess if we I guess you know
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: you got one in there now? Yeah? You ever seeing
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: songs about dipping. No, no, no, I'll leave that to
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: the uh everybody else. You should write a song called
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: full stadium. Full stadium? What's that mean? It's when you
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: put dip on your upper end bottom lip. We call
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: that a hug. Not like that? Better all R Yeah,
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: Now regale us with stories from the Phelps Woods. Oh um, Yeah,
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: I had a great hunt. It's interesting we uh you know,
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: we got invited to a hunt a friend of ours
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: private ranch. Uh for me, get how many thousands of acres?
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: But there's a couple of thousand at least there to
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: hunt and uh, my goals since I was going to
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: hunt with at least yeah, my goal since I was
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: going to hunt with Jason Phelps, who manufactures game calls
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: and started with ELK calls. It's like, you know, like
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: knows a lot about calling. ELK was who was guy
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: on the planet. Yeah. I like him like bettered seth. Yeah,
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: and I tell you you'll like him even more. Actually
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: spend a week in hunting camp with him. Yeah, because
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: I got to know him. You know, it's nice. He
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: actually offered. I told him that you and I were
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: holding on to some wyoming ELK points and he said, well,
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: I think you guys have plenty of points to draw
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: where I would like to take you and call for
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: you next fall. Seriously, he seriously doesn't he want to
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: tag himself. He just come and call. You're kidding me, not.
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: I gotta ask, because you're you're usually on the other
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: end of the calling thing. I gotta I gotta know.
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: He's even better. He's even better than Yanni. Oh no, no, no,
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: I'm saying Joannice is usually one due in the calling
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: because he's Johnny's better than everybody else. I'm saying everybody
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: else felt is better. And I want to know what
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: it was like. It was wonderful just out there in
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: my boat and my hand and the arrow knocked and uh,
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: I was telling this someone else the I think it
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: was the first bowl. Well, he called in a spike,
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: and you know, spikes come in. You can't shoot spikes
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: in Colorado, and I think the whole state there's I
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: think there might be a couple of places where you can. Colorado.
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: They gotta have four points on one antler or a
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: five inch brow time to be legal. So usually when
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: a spike comes in, you know, everybody kind of like
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: it's like whatever, we'll mess with him for a few
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: minutes whatever. So but the first branch chandler bull that
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: he called it was a six point and we kind
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: of a hasty set up. I didn't get hidden as
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: nut as much as I would like me, because all
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: of a sudden it was just like, really, we're we
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: got in tight and he was right there because you're
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: hearing him, yeah, yeah, yeah, he was bugling, and we
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: we kind of ran in there. He was bugling the
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: bulls responding to you or he was just bugling, because
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: he's a little bit of both, but definitely responding to us.
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: You know, we were locating him, so hustling there, we
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: crossed kind of a draw holler, kind of a feature
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: on the top of this big ridge, and um crept
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: up through some kind of not super dance, but some dance.
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: We were in open aspens and we had to go
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: through some semi dance fur trees, and we popped up
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: on a little bench, nice beautiful meadow, and you could
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: tell it's kind of like a spot where you'd see
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: some elk, you know, feed and doing their thing, and
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: he's bugling on the far side of it, maybe at
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: a hundred yards maybe and we really quickly are like,
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: all right, let's treat that treat that tree. And I
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: should have gone the tree number one, but it just
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: didn't look big enough, and I went with tree number two,
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: which had like four or five trees around it. I
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: just would have been, you know, hindsight, but I would
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: have been ten yards closer, and I maybe would have
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: had this other, um like older type feature that would
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: have blocked his view from me, because he ended up
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: picking me out. But basically, as soon as I set
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: up and you sat in front of the tree, and
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: as soon as I set up, I see some cows
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: feeding off to my left, like within bow range. And
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: then I look up to the right, kind of up
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: this meadow off the ridge, and I see more cows
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: popping out of the woods feeding and this bold hugle,
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: and so we're like in the circle right like it's
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: gonna happen. Well, what's cool is that Jason is like,
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: I don't know, fifteen feet off to my right, just
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: kind of off the edge of them, you know, just
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: the terrain drops off, and he's kind of tucked down
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: to the base of a tree and he's like sitting
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: there calling but then talking to me about like what
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: the bulls doing, what he's doing to like manipulate the
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: bull and sort of like narrating the thing, and the
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: bull is doing exactly what Jason says he's gonna do.
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: I'm like, Wow, this dude really knows what's up. Like
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: he's not at all like shaking up by the situation.
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: He's just very much methodically like looking at it, analyzing
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: and making moves and making sounds and you know, making
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: he's able to predict, so it's not it's not like
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: just explaining what happened as though you know what you're talking. Yeah,
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: well he's like trying things and he's like, no, that
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: didn't seem to work, or he didn't bugle back at
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: that sound, or he did, or that one made him start,
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: you know, walking, because pretty soon we could see you know,
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: the antlers coming from the far side, and uh yeah,
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, this is gonna work out pretty good
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: for me. But that one didn't because I wasn't covered
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: up enough and at like six year seventy yards, the
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: bull eyeballed me and didn't spook, but just turned nine
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: degrees and kind of walked out of the meadow and
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: went back, you know, as soon as he goes out
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: of sight, he started bugling again. Didn't he didn't like it,
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: so we kept chasing them. Um but yeah, so we
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: basically chase that heard. There was I don't know, maybe
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: three or four bulls bugle in chase until dark. Never
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: got on him again. Uh. Founder a sweet camp site,
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: just a really nice flattened bench on this big ridge
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: we were on. It's interesting, one of the stillest nights
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: I've ever spent in the woods. I mean just like
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: not not once. You know how in the middle of
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: night you always seem to wake up and you feel
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: that cold breeze and it wakes you up and you
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: gotta roll over and cover it up. I mean, just
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: none of it. There was no thermal even just like
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: still like I like, we were even like bust not
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: our win checkers and you just puff it and it
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: would just just sit there. And the old night was
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: like that. So yeah, so in the morning we get
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: up and uh, we figured we'd be hearing them from camp.
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: Never heard a bugle all night. Started to get a
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: little nervous, and then the morning we walk maybe I
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: don't know two or three hundred yards and start doing
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: location bugles and a bully answered us, and then we
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: pretty immediately, pretty much immediately got right back into the herd.
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: Jason called one in and he came behind again one
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: of these sort of like older type thickets. They really
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: love rubbing these, those older thickets. You know what I'm
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: talking about. You don't see a lot of them old. Yeah.
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: I sent it to my wife and she texted back
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: that the resident botany stuff, and uh, they love rubbing them,
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: but you don't see a lot of them there. But
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: in like the moist little draw like a seat almost
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: where there's a little more moisture. You always see these things.
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: And he got a reddish inside to it, um orange
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: reddish maybe you mean like when he's rubbing it, like
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: when you get to the cambium layer, it's kind of
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: it's like an ochre e color. Yeah. So his first
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: all kind of comes in on the far side of
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: one of these like masses. He was close, he's you know,
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: ten yards or less. But as he's coming around behind it,
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: you know, he sees something, you know, me at full
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: draw sort of shake and probably and just never quite
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: clears enough for me to let loose an arrow had
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: some stuff covering up your shoulder and so, uh, we
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: knew where they were heading to bed, or we thought
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: we did, so we basically at that point we could
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: hear bulls moving in that direction, so we kind of
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: backed out of there, did a loop behind them. We're
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: kind of coming up a ridge where it's not really
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: so we're on a big ridge and sort of where
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: the ridge drops off into steep, dark timber where we
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: thought they had bed. We're running up that edge and
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: trying to cut them off before they get into the timber,
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: you know, and uh, we get in pretty tight. We
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: actually think that they probably heard us. You know, we
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: have four people you know, pushing it to get in there.
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: The bull that I shot probably heard us coming and
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: probably thought, oh, that's you know, more elk joining this,
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: you know group that we're in. So we got in
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: there again under a hundred yards Jason bield a couple
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: of times, and you could just see this bull start
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: walking down and he might have been ten yards off
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: this edge that I keep referencing, and he's threws sort
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: of like an alleyway through the woods that he was
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: coming down, and uh, he stops it maybe like forty
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: and I can't see him and Jason's like he's at forty.
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: I'm like, yeah, I know he's somewhere in there, but
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: I don't have a lane. And then a few seconds
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: later he's like, okay, he's walking again, you know, So
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: I drew then and then I could see him pop out.
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: He's walking kind of slightly quarter in two. And then
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: it's amazing how those animals like when you call, they't
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: know what tree that call came from, Like they know
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: where you're standing, because he's walking, walking, and kind of
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: looking down the alleyway, and then right in this little
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: gap that we're standing in looking out into the alleyway,
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: it's like as soon as he's parallel with that, he
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: turns to look right in there. It's like that's where
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: that bulls should be that I heard buglin right, So
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: he turns right in there, and uh, you know, up
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: until a couple of days prior to that, I probably
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: never would have taken a frontal shot on an elk,
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: meaning like shooting him straight in his chest. You know.
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: I was always gonna wait for broadside or quarter in
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: a way. And Jason told me that he killed last
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: four out of five of his bulls taking that shot,
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: and uh, so this bulls rolls in it like we
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: think it's fifteen or sixteen yards, and right at the
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: end he pretty much turned, so he's straight on with
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: me at all. There's no quartering anymore at all. And
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: I'm thinking to myself, well, let's be a good opportunity
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: to try this, and so I let loose. Jason hadn't
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: even told me. You know it basically aim right where
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: the color changes, where that main ends, and sort of
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: that brisket starts, and that arrow disappeared inside of him,
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: and before he spun, you know, you could see the
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: blood spurting out. Jason bugles once and then right when
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: his bugle ends, you just hear this loud crash which
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: was him running into an aspen and then kind of
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: crashing across these fallen logs that were falling aspen logs
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: that were on the ground. And uh, I'm guessing he
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: was dead in three to five seconds. Really yeah, I mean,
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: just so so fast? How do we just stepped out
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: into that alleyway that I described that he walked down.
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: We would have seen him. He went seventy yards from
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: where I shot him. We could have seen him piled up.
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: But you know, you never know, and so we just said,
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: you know what, let's just PLoP down right here. We'll
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: give it forty five minutes and then we'll go. Look.
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: But yeah, we could have just stopped out there and
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: walked right up to him. I mean he was dead instantly. Nice. Yeah,
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: So um, film the whole damn thing. Oh yeah, some great,
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: great footage that. Yeah, we got good footage. So yeah,
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: we probably called in. I don't know Jason, but I
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: think called in including that spike four or five bowls
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: for me, and then I called in one for him.
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: And the remaining two days that we had got him close,
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: but sixteen yards he just wouldn't step out from behind us.
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: He was at full draw for a long time, two
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: or three to the point where Jason had to let
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: down because he was a full draw for so long.
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: So he'll take us, he'll he'll go and and uh,
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: if we use our wyoming points, he'll go with us.
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: That'd be fun, man, very fun. No, it's great, great
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: hunting with him. He's he's a real pro. Um. We
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: had a blast. What do you think about all that? Taylor?
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: Recall I heard one thing that perked my hair ears
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: up Jericho Bush steep, dark timber that somewhere in there.
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: I don't know if it's a song. This in there somewhere.
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: All Right, you're gonna you're gonna you're gonna rip out
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: you got anything you gotta add, then you're gonna rip
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: out your tune for us. Oh yeah, yeah, you're gonna add.
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: I've somebody I've been. I've always grew up more fishing,
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: just because that's what my dad and I did. I've
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: been hunting twice, uh, and I'd love to do some
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: more of it. Just never had the opportunity to always
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: uh just fishing, you know. Um always seemed to be
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: I never had any lessons in it, you know what
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: I mean. But I've had two people take me out.
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: I seem to like the more moving around, like we
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: did some rabbit hunting, you know, Yeah, sitting in the
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: stand before. I definitely the first time I went fell
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: asleep and knocked my head on the front thing, and
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: I was like, yeah that moving around a little bit. Uh.
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: You live in Nashville, Yeah, yeah, I been there two
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: years now, so it's been a it's been a great
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: two years. Is it a good Is that a good
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: move for aspiring musicians? Uh, that's the wild thing, man.
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: It's all I feel like what I'm doing with my
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: music is very organic because a lot of people they
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: want to be, you know, the next this or that,
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: and they like, oh, you gotta move to Nashville. Make it.
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: It's like, oh you always hear like that song on
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: the ride? Yeah, yeah, it's good to man, David Encore, right, yeah,
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: and uh it's about going to Nashville. That's like one
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: of those things. I never moved there until I had
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: my first publishing deal. So I played in sang my
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: first ever gig January and had a publishing deal with
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: a major company that September, and still didn't even move there,
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: and uh, you know it funded me. I stayed back
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: in South Carolina to get this bad boy right here.
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: I always wanted to. I thought you had some guitar.
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: It was in a burning house or something. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: for sure. Um that's what the wild story is. When
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: I was about X I, I got drum set. My dad,
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: he's a carpenter, and he spent three years of his
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: off time building this two story log cabin. We only
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: got to live in for a few months, and uh,
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: let me know, on the sad part hits. Yeah, oh yeah,
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: it's about to hit. I do a little and uh
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: moods setting. And so one day I was at school
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: and uh, the house caught on fire and it burned
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: everything we had, and the male truck came up with
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: my first guitar and he's like, I almost didn't bring
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: this up, but I figured somebody needed it, and that's
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: all I had. And as they say, the rest is history.
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: What do you think of that accompaniment? That's good? It's
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: like and when you're watching one of those short films
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: and it gets to like a sad part. And when
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: I got the diagnosis and the music will be like
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: in the arms of the Angel when the doctor called
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: with the diagnosis, our hearts just sank like that, right there, Steve. Okay,
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: so you're gonna play us some newso yeah, yeah yeah.
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: Oh So do you sell music to other music? Have
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: you sold a song to another musician? I know, but
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: a lot of that I have the market too with
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: the publishing deal. So a lot of people in my field,
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: you know, they I'm more of an artist side of things,
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: So I write all my own stuff and uh, which
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: that's not something you look to do. Yeah, just because Um,
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: I don't know. It's so it's one of those things
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: that the way my mind works and how I write
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: and how I play is so not setting me apart
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: in difference. It's just so different. It's not necessarily what selling.
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: But yeah, so like somebody let myself. Um, you know,
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: they go in and they write, you know, at least
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: two times a week, if not more, and uh, you
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: know they might pitch that to Jason Audine and get
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: something like that. But uh, you know, I just I
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: love language too much play on words for that to
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: be you know, coming through the radio. But I mean
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: the peers I worked with, you know, Keith Urban songs
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: and Buddy Dave Panish, he was the first person I
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: ever co wrote a song with. And uh he's written
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: you know, American Ride the Key, Uh, all kinds of stuff,
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: Keith Urban stuff. And it's wild because like my mom
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: grew up loving Keith Urban's like early stuff. And now
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: to see you know, we'll play a gig at the
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: Blueberry Cafe, which is pretty special place in Nashville, and
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: she gets to see the people, the stories behind and
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: meet them and it's like, at least I'm making it
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: a little bit proud you know what I mean. Good? Yeah, yeah,
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: now stay close to that mike. Yeah, well you'll dig
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: this one. So this one, this tune tune, new brand,
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: new tune. So y'all heard it first. This one ain't
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: even that's it's gonna be on the new record. I
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: know they probably don't let me playing stuff that I
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: ain't out, but um, y'all get to y'all get to
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: hear this, and first it's a good one. It's called
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: black Powder Soul. Black Powder Soul, Yeah, yeah, yeah, I do.
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: Women throw themselves at you when they see in the airport. Um,
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: I usually have a big Pelican case, like from like,
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: because this nice guitar. You don't just be slinging this,
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: you know, pretty easy. So people like what is that
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: in that case? And they always asking when I walk through.
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: People think it's like a a K forty seven or something.
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: So once I gets through, when I get through, they're like,
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: what is that? And I always like, it's my samurai sword,
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: you know, and just throws people off. It's I try
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: to be dry humor and it's sometimes I just don't connect.
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: But anyway, here's this. It's a new tune called black
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: Powder sat m wool soldier. I'm a lawless man. Don't
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: play pook since that stint spooke cane over some boomling
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: moon shine my bathtub gin. That's why I'm I. Oh
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: over under is my only friend. Oh you black powder,
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: black powder soap. I got dark clouds above me. Oh yeah,
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: the fire is blue, my heartest botten in my blood
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: drowns cold. I got a black pounder, black powder sold
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: m Oh you can run them tables, you can't outrun
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: them cowboys and hustlers holding a steel wheel hand. The
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: best blood money is what keeps you fit when there
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: rain run. He stole with black powder, black powder soup,
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: got dark clouds above me in the fire blue, my
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: heartiest fod my blood brown's cool. I gotta black powder,
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: black pounder, soup, black powder so right here, right here
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: in the ticker. Loved it great again? Sounds awesome? Oh no,
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: it's great. That's my favorite song. Man. You I like
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: the over undertouch. That's like insider people don't because most
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: people be like double barrel people people are. That's this
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: kind of interesting point is people are always curious about
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: the song where you know? Is it the words of
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: the you know? And it's just it's a hard thing
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: to explain. Like that tune itself took three days to write.
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: And so like the first two verses, I keep give
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: you a little insight on it. It might help with
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: that process because any anytime somebody like a songwriter tries
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: to explain it, you know, it's this. It's it's one
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: of those things like how can you explain something that
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: has you know, infinity possibilities down to the letter? You know?
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: And uh, you know, the first I started with the
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: line I'm a warless soldier, I'm a lawless man. You
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: know what does that put in your head? You know,
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: like this guy he ain't seen the war, but he's
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: a lawless man. He's like he's he's out here in
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: Bozeman running around shooting something, you know what I mean?
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: And uh yeah, just kind of uh the course of
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: that black powder soul, you know, that kind of tied
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: everything up of this. Um, I don't know. I just
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: love this kind of Western vibe of you know, you
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: get you get kind of like Western you know, Wills,
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: you know, something like that. And uh yeah, so like um,
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: the over un or stuff. It's uh, I hadn't done
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: a stint in Spokane. But damn, that's a good line,
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: you know what I mean. Yeah, if you're writing a
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: song and someone's got to do a stint somewhere else
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: over my bathtub gin, you know what I mean, That's
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: that's cool. Yeah. Well thanks man, Yeah, man, thank you
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: all for having me. Wish you the best luck of
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: your career. Thank you. Yeah, I heard, I heard that
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: you're gonna become really famous. Man. I hope we can
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: make your money and get a little place over here
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: in uh Paradise Valley. And yeah, you have someone, uh,
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: you have a music business person who you can't he
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: really uh is enthusiastic about your talent. Man, It's all
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: worked out. That's why I say it's down to the
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: tea of doc. I'm I'm I'm made to do this,
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: I believe because I would have never I thought I
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: was gonna be a fishing guy the rest of my life.
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: You know. And uh, the people I've met, you know,
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: only idiots do that, right, Brody. Yes, the guy that
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: you're talking about, you know, we uh he met it like.
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: I was playing one of my first places in Nashville
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: and that night I met my manager. He was to
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: this day him and uh got my publish until that night.
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: The guy from the company, he stayed in the green
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: room with us till four o'clock in the morning, listening
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: to songs, and he was like, you know, telling me
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: what he's gonna do. And I was like, yeah, man,
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: I ain't gonna ever see this guy again. And so
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: I went back to working construction because that's what I
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: did for I moved up there, and sure enough he
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: called me and he's like, you know, we're gonna get
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: you up here. And it's like, man, you know what
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: I mean, hold you three? You got playtimes? Yeah, saith
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: oldenough to be your daddy. Man. Everybody is yeah, well, yeah,
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: hopefully we'll get to come see you live when live
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: shows or a thing again. Definitely. I'll be like I
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: knew that some of a bit ya he was singing
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: when he was singing intros and nowatrolls for y man,
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: that's y'all stomp me for a minute, but now I
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: get what y'all talking about. Yeah, that's great man. Best
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: luck to you, Thanks for coming on the show, Thank
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: you for having me. Thank you very much. Taylor McCall.
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: How people are gonna find you? Taylor McAll. You can
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: go on Taylor McCall dot com and we just uh
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: we got the online store for if you want to
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: get a t shirt and have something that's good. Um,
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: we you can find me on Instagram, Taylor McCall music
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: and everywhere else. But the tune you just read, the
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: tune you just not you didn't read it. That's a
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: writer language. The tune you just played is not available,
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: only available here if you like what you heard. There
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: were recording the album in November, and it'll be out
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: here soon. So and that song will beyond that and
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: where this version is better than that. Yeah, I was.
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: Originally there was this tune Quartermaster, Um that's coming out
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: and um, I was like, man, they gotta hear some
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: black powder. So today Quartermaster is a great name for
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: a song. Now it is. I wrote it as uh,
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: it's kind of this, um kind of this guy goes
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: to war and it's the uh you know how usually
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: the husband dies, you know, well he comes back from
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: war and Quartermaster kind of you know, he wasn't a
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: chopper gunner. You know, he was handing out sleeping bags
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: and um, he come back and his his his wife died.
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: So I was kind of hold up and on this
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: lake in isolation, that's where I'd love to write. And
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: this huge bookcase I was writing out and I picked
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: up picked up a book and Tyler the book was
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: Gentleman Swords and pistols. And that spiraled into like this
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: whole song about that. And you know that's what writing
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: songs is, you know what I mean to me, it's
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: like taking that one thing and turning it into you know,
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: like that story and just an imagination. I got a
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: crazy brain. I guess that's great, man, keep it crazy.
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: Thank you, all right, thanks a lot to them, a
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: call check them out, uh by some starff from them,
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: sweet hats, listen to music. The new album is called
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: what uh nothing, I'm not sure yet. Yeah, you haven't
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: named it. It's coming out, Yeah, it's coming out and
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: includes black Powder song. Yeah, we got so many songs
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: just whiittling down you know what I mean? Black Powder? Yeah,
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: I might do some like back up on that. Hell
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: yeah all right, guys, thanks a lot, say
