- 0:05people at really cool and interesting places.
- 0:08Like the time I got to sit down with the legendary
- 0:11Martha Stewart at Blueprint in Las Vegas. She
- 0:15talked to me about all things home and what she
- 0:18was going to do next at the very young age of
- 0:2085. So join me in this special edition of Noise

- 0:58Almost nobody gets asked a hard question. This
- 1:01show fixes that. Welcome to Noise vs. Signal.
- 1:05I'm your host, Inman CEO Tom Bohn. Each week
- 1:08we sit down with the top producing agents, industry
- 1:11CEOs, prop tech founders, and the people shaping
- 1:15the future of the business of home. Then we break
- 1:18down the week's biggest headlines and decide
- 1:20what's noise and what's signal. Let's get into
- 1:23it. Thank you both so much for joining us today.
- 1:28I don't think anyone needs an introduction for
- 1:30you. Martha Stewart, absolute legend. Thank you
- 1:32for being here. I love an introduction. Martha,
- 1:35you have been an amazing brand for so many years
- 1:38and continue to evolve. And just thank you for
- 1:41being here at Inman's Blueprint. And Kyle Rush,
- 1:43you're a co -founder of the new app, Hint. And
- 1:47we're going to talk about that a little bit.
- 1:48But first, Martha, as I was sitting in the stage
- 1:52hearing everyone talk about you, They asked me
- 1:55to ask you one question, and I'm dead serious.
- 1:58It wasn't about Hint. It wasn't about your magazines.
- 2:01It wasn't about your career. It was how do you
- 2:04stay looking so amazing? So can you share the
- 2:08sorcery that you're using with the world out
- 2:10there? Well, I am probably older than most of
- 2:13the audience, unfortunately for me. But I enjoy
- 2:18what I do. And I actually have – I'm sure I have
- 2:23– I come from good stock. Good stock. I am healthy.
- 2:28I care a lot about longevity. I care about taking
- 2:31care of myself. I care about being a healthy
- 2:35human being. So I work at it. Good exercise,
- 2:39good diet, good skin care. So good because I
- 2:44now actually have an entrepreneurial venture
- 2:48called Elm Biosciences. And you'll be hearing
- 2:51more and more about that. But we actually have
- 2:54created some very efficacious products for skin
- 2:57care. Well, it's working. Kyle, you also look
- 3:00very good too. Thank you. So whatever you're
- 3:02doing, please keep doing it. Absolutely fascinated
- 3:07and so interested in what you're doing with the
- 3:10app. Can you tell me a little bit about what
- 3:13brought you to this point, why you wanted to
- 3:15create Hint, and what do you think it's going
- 3:17to bring to the market? Well, we both come from
- 3:20probably exactly the same place, home ownership.
- 3:24And I thought about this years and years ago
- 3:26when I first started my company. I'm very curious
- 3:31about real estate, about homes, about keeping
- 3:36the homes in good working order, making them
- 3:39more beautiful. And I was always wondering, why
- 3:43isn't there some tool that can help me run my
- 3:46home better? It's a big, big job. You have other
- 3:50jobs to do. You have motherhood. wifehood. You
- 3:53have a job, a real job out in the workplace.
- 3:57Who's going to help me run my home? And I thought
- 4:00a home organizer would be so great. And then
- 4:03I stumbled upon my neighbors. Kyle's a neighbor
- 4:07and he has just gotten his first home with his
- 4:12family. And it was so exciting. And they were
- 4:14working already on a program, a real software
- 4:17program, an app. to help people run their homes.
- 4:21Tell me a little bit about the app because it
- 4:23sounds perfect. I wish I would have had this
- 4:26all these years. Of course. Once you start to
- 4:30use an app like this, this app, Hint, it's called
- 4:33Home Intelligence, you are going to find that
- 4:36your life is easier. you're going to find that
- 4:40your home runs better, that you're going to find
- 4:42that you're smarter and your home is smarter.
- 4:46That's the whole object of Hint. And Kyle and
- 4:50his team of software engineers and the rest of
- 4:53the partners who are doing the marketing and
- 4:56doing the research and doing the artwork, the
- 5:00creativity for this thing, it's not an easy thing
- 5:03to create. By the way, you can talk about that.
- 5:06One of the hardest things I've built because
- 5:08the home is huge, right? I mean, there's nothing
- 5:11that doesn't touch the home. And we're used to
- 5:13building apps that solve one specific problem,
- 5:16right? And so we've started with specific problems
- 5:18and built it out. But Hint is a very capable
- 5:21app across the board. You have people like Martha
- 5:24who know how to manage a home and are an expert
- 5:26on it. And then you have a bunch of people like
- 5:28me. I bought my home four years ago. It was something
- 5:32we planned for for a decade. We were so excited
- 5:34about it. Got into it, and about six months later,
- 5:37we're like, oh, God. What are we doing here?
- 5:40What is an oil -fed hydronic baseboard heating
- 5:44system? How do you maintain that? That broke
- 5:47in our home about a year in. Is oil the best
- 5:50heating? Is that the best thing to heat your
- 5:52house with? Right. Is it natural gas? Is it electric?
- 5:56Who the heck knows when you're just coming out
- 5:58from an apartment in New York that all this is
- 6:01taken care of by somebody else and you have to
- 6:03figure it out when you have your own home. And
- 6:05then pulling together warranties and all that
- 6:08type of stuff. Oh, the warranties are the worst.
- 6:11I have drawers full of warranties. I've saved
- 6:14every warranty from every single appliance I
- 6:16have ever bought. And now, guess what? Now you
- 6:20just take a picture of the number in your appliance.
- 6:24and you feed it into Hint, and Hint will tell
- 6:28you about that particular appliance. And now
- 6:32we're calling all the appliance companies and
- 6:34making those numbers more visible and more easily
- 6:37recognized. I mean, it's hard to find some of
- 6:41them. I've had to go inside and take out drawers
- 6:43from refrigerators to find the number. But it
- 6:46really works. I love on stage you said something
- 6:49that I thought was really interesting. So we
- 6:53represent a lot of realtors and agents and brokerages,
- 6:55right? So it's a big part of our community here.
- 6:57So I want to ask you in a second how they can
- 6:59interact with this and how it could be helpful
- 7:01in that process, Kyle. But I want to hold that
- 7:02because Martha said something interesting. She
- 7:04said, imagine if you were buying a house. and
- 7:07it already had been in the app. And all that
- 7:09information, the realtor can then take and share
- 7:12it with that. Just elaborate a little bit on
- 7:14that, because I think that's - That'll make your
- 7:16purchase much more reliable. Somebody's not going
- 7:20to just say, oh yeah, we've taken care of all
- 7:22of that. This will tell you that it has been
- 7:25taken care of, that it has been thought about,
- 7:27that it has been addressed. That's what I want
- 7:30him to do. I want that to do it for every single
- 7:33home in America. It would be so great to of a
- 7:36record. It's like the genealogy of the home.
- 7:41The genealogy of the home. I love that. Kyle,
- 7:43how do you see sharing this with realtors and
- 7:46how can they help spread the word? There are...
- 7:48like millions of Instagram reels out there about
- 7:50people talking about like, you're just constantly
- 7:53at war with the previous homeowner because you
- 7:55don't know anything about the home. You don't
- 7:57know how it was maintained, why decisions were
- 7:59made, anything like that. Can't get access to
- 8:01them anymore. Yeah. I've dealt with that. Many
- 8:03people don't have access, never had access, right?
- 8:05How do you turn this on? Realtor. Yeah. You have
- 8:07no idea. So, you know, eventually where we want
- 8:10to move is where the hint is embedded in the
- 8:13transaction. um the realtor will enter like the
- 8:17home inspection report um the deed um you know
- 8:20any of the closing documents will automatically
- 8:21be put into hint that way when you are moving
- 8:25into the home you now have an expert on your
- 8:27side it'll be very different from when i moved
- 8:29into my home and they were just like have fun
- 8:31you know enjoy it hopefully you can figure it
- 8:34out But now you'll have a history of the home.
- 8:37You'll have like the home inspection report has
- 8:39tons of information on the home and people don't
- 8:42know how to read that and they don't read it.
- 8:43But now you can just go into Hint and say, why
- 8:46is my boiler making a weird sound? And it knows
- 8:49all of the history on it. Your boiler is 35 years
- 8:52old. It's time for a service. And you don't know
- 8:55that. Absolutely. Yeah. What a great idea. And
- 8:58who's going to service it? What a great idea.
- 9:00So, Kyle, I'm going to put you on the spot. You
- 9:02need to tell me, what's it like working with
- 9:04Martha Stewart? Okay, I get asked this a lot.
- 9:07It is the best co -worker I've ever had, to be
- 9:09honest. I had no idea what to expect working
- 9:12with you, Martha. I was like, oh, is she going
- 9:14to be a figurehead? Is it just going to be a
- 9:16marketing relationship? I could tell you the
- 9:17answer to that. No, she's not going to be a figurehead.
- 9:19On the outside, I could literally tell you the
- 9:22answer to that. I've never met somebody more
- 9:24detailed. I mean, she knows every single little
- 9:26thing about the home. I come over to her house
- 9:28all the time. We look at the app, and she very
- 9:31easily can say, you know this isn't right about
- 9:33soil people need to know this these are the types
- 9:37of siding that are popular in these areas we
- 9:39need to change the language to make it you know
- 9:41easier to understand for the average homeowner
- 9:43i mean it's it's very detailed and super super
- 9:46helpful to have somebody who has been working
- 9:48on homes for 40 years it's kind of amazing i
- 9:51think when i come from a media background and
- 9:53media world and i i would put martha up in the
- 9:55absolute top of the best media ceos to ever come
- 9:58so thank you yeah you've been absolutely amazing
- 10:00martha i'm going to finish it on on this question
- 10:02because i know you've got a lot going on um you
- 10:05you've accomplished so much um is there anything
- 10:09next i mean what do you never slow down what
- 10:11what should we what should we be looking for
- 10:13there's skin care there's other things what what
- 10:16are we i'm just looking for that Beautiful, simple,
- 10:19sort of like a little shoebox of a house on the
- 10:23coast of somewhere looking out at the sea with
- 10:26every single modern appliance known to mankind.
- 10:32Enjoying your success. Right. Not exactly. Simplification
- 10:37is key. to making things understandable. I mean,
- 10:44really. And that's what we're trying to do with
- 10:46Hint. We're trying to simplify the job for the
- 10:49homeowner. And I think it's going to work. I
- 10:52think it really is a very, very fine tool. I
- 10:55think you got a tiger by the tail. Kyle, how
- 10:57do you get the app? So you can download it in
- 10:59the iOS app store. It'll come to Android in the
- 11:02future. It's very easy. You just install it.
- 11:05You enter your address and it will immediately
- 11:07start getting all the public information on your
- 11:09home and become an expert and it's ready to go.
- 11:11Love it. Kyle Rush, co -founder and CTO of Hint
- 11:15and the legendary Martha Stewart. Thank you so
- 11:17much. Thank you. wherever you get your podcasts
- 11:29so you never miss an episode. I'll see you next
- 11:32time.
