- 0:11I'm bringing a word this morning in the series that we have been
- 0:15doing as a church under the incredible Faith, Love and Hope
- 0:19season we've been exploring as a church God, money and me and who
- 0:24who has been who's picked up that resource by Paul Dejong in
- 0:28the last number of weeks. Phenomenal, phenomenal.
- 0:31It's really going to do some beautiful things.
- 0:34It's going to undo some things that maybe you need undoing and
- 0:39rebuild some things. And this is not just financial.
- 0:44As I've walked through listening to this book, as I've listened
- 0:47to this book, I have noticed that this topic of money is
- 0:53attached to our heart. Has anybody else discovered
- 0:57this? It is not separate to us.
- 1:00It is absolutely attached to our heart.
- 1:02And so it is such a beautiful and sacred thing to do to walk
- 1:08through the Word of God and understand what He says about
- 1:12money over the in the last couple of weeks, you may have
- 1:15discovered from the incredible words that have come out from
- 1:18Pastor Gray and Pastor Rach last week, what a word last week.
- 1:22Wow, phenomenal. You will have discovered that
- 1:25God has a lot to say about money in His Word.
- 1:32He lists things about how we are to steward what He has provided
- 1:38us thousands more times than when he's what he speaks about
- 1:43his love, his grace and faith. This is huge.
- 1:48This means for you and I, we have a lot from God's word that
- 1:54we need to learn. If he's got a lot to say about
- 1:57it, we've got a lot to learn about it.
- 1:59And so in an unusual my part of the series that I'm going to
- 2:04bring today or unpack today, I have titled The Wounded Wallet
- 2:12The Wounded Wallet. Why?
- 2:15Because I truly believe that God has to undo some things in us
- 2:21before He begins to build some things in us.
- 2:25He's so faithful. For those of you who have
- 2:29accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, you'll know this.
- 2:32He's so faithful and He's so good that He doesn't just take
- 2:38the broken mess that you and I are or were, and go from here.
- 2:44I can do something with this life.
- 2:47No, He says I can redeem and I can restore and I can heal and I
- 2:55can show you the threat of grace because God promises you and I
- 3:00that He's been with us always, that He's never left us, never
- 3:06forsaken us. That means that when we didn't
- 3:09know Him, He knew us and He was near to us, we just weren't
- 3:14aware or wouldn't acknowledge His nearness.
- 3:18Which means for you and I, there's been a threat of grace.
- 3:23There is in each of our stories all along.
- 3:26That as we undo so gently with the Holy Spirit some of the
- 3:30wounds we have. And so we're going to look at
- 3:34this in this area today, the wounds that we have.
- 3:38We see the threat of grace that God has been weaving for all our
- 3:43lives because he has a plan and a purpose for each and every one
- 3:48of us. And that is not to harm us to,
- 3:51but to give us a hope and a future.
- 3:55So I want to preach a message this morning called the wounded
- 3:58wallet. And before anybody panics, it's
- 4:02not a message about budgeting and it's not going to tackle
- 4:07your after pay balance. You got to do that one on your
- 4:10own. All right, Although the Holy
- 4:13Spirit this morning might speak to you about your Uber Eats
- 4:16spending. You know, we have no Uber Eats
- 4:19where we are. Graham and I's budget has just
- 4:22so significantly changed it's ridiculous.
- 4:26We are totally home cooked meals now.
- 4:33But this message is deeper than dollars, all right, because many
- 4:39people don't actually have a money problem.
- 4:43I know so many of you disagreed with that statement, all right?
- 4:49We have a wounded heart that money got attached to.
- 4:54And until the wounds heal, the patterns continue to repeat.
- 5:01So I want to ask you a really deeply honest question.
- 5:05I'm going to ask each and everyone of you to shut your
- 5:07eyes for just a moment. And I'm going to ask you to have
- 5:11a think about this is what to do with my interns.
- 5:14All right, have a think about just for 30 seconds, your first
- 5:19memory of money. Was it fearful?
- 5:40Did have conflict? Stressful?
- 5:44Many of us as children have great memories of going to the
- 5:47lolly store. Who's got the lolly store memory
- 5:52right? Lolly store memory.
- 5:54And when I was little, and I'm sure there are others here who
- 5:57can beat this, which is awesome. And you can have those cafe
- 6:00conversations after. But when I was little, I
- 6:03remember that $0.05 used to get 20 lollies.
- 6:10It was a little white bag that used to be screwed at the top
- 6:13like this, and you could go up and you could get it.
- 6:16And so to five find $0.05 on the road was a big deal as a child.
- 6:22If you found $0.20, you were loaded.
- 6:25You go one of the big bags. Does anybody have those sorts of
- 6:28memories? Maybe you don't.
- 6:31Maybe your early memories of money are actually around lack
- 6:36or embarrassment or instability. When I was a child, when I was
- 6:42in grade 2, my mum sent me to the school uniform lady.
- 6:48Who has an experience with the school uniform lady?
- 6:52We had a school uniform lady, right?
- 6:55And this school uniform lady scared me.
- 6:57She scared me so much that even if I didn't have to go to the
- 7:00school uniform, little booth place in our school, if she was
- 7:05walking down the hallway, I'd put my head down and I'd walk to
- 7:08the side and cross to the other side.
- 7:10I was so afraid of her because she used to walk around with a
- 7:13ruler and she would get girls as you would walk past.
- 7:18Some of you guys have this memory.
- 7:19This is really normal for you. But when you'd walk past, she'd
- 7:22say kneel and you had to get on the ground.
- 7:25She'd measure your skirt versus like the ground and all the
- 7:29girls skirts had to actually go on the ground.
- 7:31And she would measure the boys socks because they had to come
- 7:34right up to the kneecap. And so she would be feeling boys
- 7:37kneecaps and measuring girls skirts.
- 7:39And I was so afraid of her that I remember asking my mum with
- 7:43the brand new dresses that we used to get at the beginning of
- 7:45the year to let the hems down so that I didn't ever have to be
- 7:50measured. So it's so ridiculous.
- 7:52I've seen in school photos that my dress was like here I had a
- 7:57couple of inches gap between the pulled up socks and the and the
- 8:01dress in Townsville, which is just crazy.
- 8:03But I have this memory of going to the school uniform lady when
- 8:07I was in grade 2 and because I needed a new sports skirt, I'd
- 8:12grown out of my sports skirt and it was now too short and I was
- 8:15going to get measured. So my mum sent an envelope to
- 8:20the school with me in year 2 and said go to the uniform shop lady
- 8:25because she was open before and after school before school and
- 8:29give it to her and say I need a new sports skirt now.
- 8:34There wasn't mobile phones so she couldn't text ahead.
- 8:38So in that era you would go to the uniform shop.
- 8:41So I remember being petrified and I'd have to go and she was
- 8:44going to measure me and she was going to give me a skirt that
- 8:46was too big but I was afraid would fall down when I'd run on
- 8:49sports days. But all the, all, all of those
- 8:52fears aside, I went to the uniform shop and I remember
- 8:55going to the uniform shop and saying to the to the uniform
- 8:59shop lady, I'm here to buy a new sports skirt.
- 9:02My mum has given me this money to pay for it and so she eyed me
- 9:09off, didn't get a skirt out, opened the envelope and took out
- 9:15a $50 note. Now I didn't know in year 2 what
- 9:20that was. I didn't know the value of this
- 9:23yet. But in grade 2 I'm quite young.
- 9:27I graduated school as a 16 year old so I was really young.
- 9:32And I have this vivid memory of the uniform shop lady saying to
- 9:37a very young child, you stole this from your mum, didn't you?
- 9:45And I remember standing there as a little girl going, no, my mum
- 9:50gave it 'cause I need a new skirt.
- 9:51She said I'm going to check, I'm going to call.
- 9:54And she sent me out of the uniform shop and at the end of
- 9:59the day my mum, who was a little bit like me, smaller in statue
- 10:03but if you've met her just as fiery, walked in and had what, 2
- 10:08with the uniform shop lady. And I remember this defining
- 10:14moment as a 7 year old where I was clearly, in the eyes of
- 10:23adults, would only possess a whole lot of finance if I had
- 10:29stolen it. Do you know that that marked my
- 10:34life for nearly 25 years and marked the way I did finance?
- 10:42It was so significant, I struggled to have large finances
- 10:46on me at any time for fear that someone would think I had stolen
- 10:55it. It also spoke to myself worth on
- 10:59that I wasn't worth or worthy to be carrying that level of
- 11:05finance. Each and every one of us could
- 11:10have these moments and there will be people here today, which
- 11:13is why we're bringing a message like this who carry wounds
- 11:18around finance now. It's so funny.
- 11:22I could remember that when I was actually preparing and I wrote
- 11:25that question, it was still the first memory I remember about
- 11:31finance. And yet Fast forward a couple of
- 11:35years later, at 12 years old, we used to hang out at the skate
- 11:40park, which in Townsville was not actually a skate park done
- 11:43by the community. It was actually held on the
- 11:45Uniting Church property. There was a big half pipe at the
- 11:49at the end of the car park of this church property.
- 11:52And so all the kids in town used to go the half pipe and most of
- 11:56us couldn't skate. So we would just slide down it
- 11:58on our butts and split our shorts.
- 12:01But it was really fun. So we, my dad would take us down
- 12:04regularly. It was big car park.
- 12:06We'd rollerblade because it was the 90s and we'd slide on this
- 12:10half pipe. And I remember on this day there
- 12:13was the, the shop, everybody knows the corner stores in that
- 12:16era, right where you would get those lolly bags.
- 12:20And I remember saying to my dad, after we go to the skate park,
- 12:25can we go to the lolly shop? And I remember him saying to me,
- 12:30I actually don't have any finance today, but you know
- 12:33what, We're going to God's house.
- 12:35You never know now. God's house wasn't open.
- 12:40It was Saturday. We would just go to the skate
- 12:42park attached to God's house. But I remember on this day I
- 12:47heard the comment. I totally dismissed it.
- 12:49I was 12 years old. My little brothers were on the
- 12:52half pipe and I was balancing like all good kids.
- 12:55You know, I'm using myself on the car park edges, right?
- 12:59And I was walking and there was concrete on this side and grass
- 13:02on this side and all of a sudden something shiny caught my eye.
- 13:11And right there in the grass was the brand new $2.00 coins.
- 13:17Not one but a a whole lot of coins.
- 13:23I picked it up and I was like, and then I started to see
- 13:26sparkles all the way through the grass.
- 13:29And as I was walking along, I was getting more and more
- 13:31excited. And I was like, Dad, Dad, look
- 13:34in the House of God, as my dad said to me, but you never know
- 13:42because we're going to the House of God.
- 13:44Do you know, in the House of God we sit under the provision of
- 13:50the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords.
- 13:53Do you know I walked away with that day, $22.00 all in coins.
- 14:00Somebody was skating in their, you know, pockets got emptied
- 14:03and I found it. But it taught me something that
- 14:07in the House of God there is supernatural provision and it's
- 14:14not just for rescue, it's that this is the way our God
- 14:18operates. My dad said to me when I showed
- 14:21him because I was like, what do I do with this?
- 14:23This is a lot of money. Do I need to hand it in to
- 14:25somebody? Do I, what do I need to do with
- 14:27this? And I remember my dad just
- 14:29kneeling down and saying to me, Mel, don't ever be worried about
- 14:34your finance. If you're busy about his work,
- 14:38he'll look after you. And I want to say to you,
- 14:43church, if you're busy about his work, if you're, if you are
- 14:49walking out, what God has called you to do obediently, faithfully
- 14:55being found trustworthy with what he's put in your hands.
- 14:59God will provide according to his riches.
- 15:05We're not subject to the world's economy when we come under his
- 15:10economy. That's why I wanted to ask you,
- 15:14what is your early memory? Because we all have the
- 15:17opportunity to have this reframed.
- 15:21Many adults are still making financial decisions today from
- 15:26childhood wounds. Some people over overspend
- 15:31because they're wounded. Some hoard because they're
- 15:34wounded. Some avoid finances completely
- 15:39because shame overwhelms them. Some strive endlessly because
- 15:44their worth became connected to performance.
- 15:48The reality is many people need healing before they need to make
- 15:53a budget. Because your wallet often
- 15:58reveals what your heart is carrying.
- 16:02So I'm going to bring this out in 4 quick points this morning.
- 16:06I want to unpack this because I pray this morning that there is
- 16:09freedom found in this place. I can testify that God has
- 16:15taken. Gray and I are on such a journey
- 16:18in this area to see wholeness and healing take place that
- 16:23today in our mid 40s, we are walking debt free.
- 16:29That's unheard of. When I when I read that
- 16:32scripture that says do not conform to the ways of the
- 16:36world, I wonder what this looks like if we applied that not just
- 16:42in behaviours but in our area of finances.
- 16:48What does it look like to not conform to the ways of the
- 16:51world, but instead be transformed by the renewing of
- 16:57His Spirit .1 this morning? A wounded wallet is often a
- 17:03wounded heart. Proverbs 423 says guard your
- 17:08heart, for from it everything you do flows.
- 17:14Everything flows from the heart, including your relationship with
- 17:19money. Money is emotional.
- 17:25If you doubt me in it, see how you feel or the difference
- 17:30between when you open who's still got like a physical wallet
- 17:35and it's not just your iPhone and you're tapping it, right?
- 17:38Yeah. OK.
- 17:38So the difference, the emotional difference to when you open that
- 17:43thing and it's got nothing but store cards.
- 17:47And I'm not talking the ones that get you anything.
- 17:49I'm talking the loyalty points, right?
- 17:53Right. When it's got nothing in there
- 17:55or it's just got some silver coin in there to when you open
- 17:58that up and there's a whole lot of greenback in there, right,
- 18:04there's a different emotional response.
- 18:07All right? Money is emotional.
- 18:10That's why we buy things we can't afford, avoid opening
- 18:14bills, panic over small expenses, obsess over financial
- 18:20security, or we work until we burn out.
- 18:27Or we feel shame around lack. Because money is rarely just
- 18:34practical. Does anybody feel that it's
- 18:36really just practical? It's deeply spiritual and very
- 18:41emotional. Maybe growing up, money created
- 18:45conflict in your home. Maybe bills created fear, debt
- 18:50created anxiety, addiction created instability, gambling
- 18:56destroyed trust, or poverty created shame.
- 19:01Some of us inherited more than just eye colour.
- 19:07We inherited fear or scarcity, which we've spoken into for the
- 19:13last two weeks, or survival mode, and now as adults, we
- 19:19react to money emotionally because our hearts were wounded
- 19:24relationally. Hear me today.
- 19:28This is really important. Your family history may explain
- 19:33you, but it doesn't define you. Romans 12 says be transformed by
- 19:42the renewing of your mind, meaning the cycle can break
- 19:49chaos, fear, lack, debt, financial panic, shame.
- 19:57Jesus heals hearts, not just habits.
- 20:00All right, which brings me to point #2 wounded people build
- 20:08golden calves. We're going to go to a passage
- 20:11in the Bible, and it's found in Exodus 32.
- 20:15I love this passage and what it communicates to you and I about
- 20:19this and what happens when people are wounded and they've
- 20:24got to walk forward with wealth, all right?
- 20:29Wealth doesn't mean that you're rich just with money.
- 20:33In Exodus 32, Israel has been delivered miraculously,
- 20:38supernaturally, so significantly by God from Egypt.
- 20:45All right, They've been delivered from slavery.
- 20:48They had the sea parted for them.
- 20:51They've walked across on dry land.
- 20:54God has then fed them supernaturally.
- 20:57I just think this is, does anybody else get wowed by these
- 21:01stories in the Bible and you go, does anybody ever pray?
- 21:05God, let us see this stuff again.
- 21:07I'd totally wake up to Mana. Come on now.
- 21:10Right? But then Moses goes up the
- 21:14mountain into the presence of God and is delayed, Say delayed.
- 21:23Beware of what you do with your finances when God tarries
- 21:31according to your time in the waiting.
- 21:36When there is delay, let me tell you what happens.
- 21:39Suddenly the waiting exposes their wounds.
- 21:47The golden calf that they create while Moses is up the mountain
- 21:52was not birthed out of atheism. It was born from impatience.
- 22:00They didn't stop wanting God, They stopped trusting in Him
- 22:05while they were waiting. And instead of surrendering,
- 22:10they built something. Here it is that they could
- 22:14control. And isn't that what we still do
- 22:19today? When life feels uncertain, when
- 22:24God feels silent, when waiting feels uncomfortable, we start
- 22:31building substitutes. We build hustle, control,
- 22:39accumulation, comfort, image, status, endless striving because
- 22:48wounded people often trust control more than surrender.
- 22:55I'm going to repeat that and I'm just going to ask you, let that
- 22:58settle in your spirit this morning.
- 23:01Wounded people often trust control more than surrender.
- 23:11Let me lovingly say this this morning though.
- 23:15Sometimes the most spiritual looking people are actually
- 23:18highly organised control freaks. Some of you don't have the gift
- 23:28of administration. You have anxiety with a
- 23:30spreadsheet. Come on.
- 23:37But healing begins when trust becomes greater than control.
- 23:44Here's here's the Third Point in this The gold was never the
- 23:48problem. All right?
- 23:51The Israelites made this golden calf out of gold.
- 23:56The gold was not the issue. This is what wrecks me about
- 23:59this particular story. The gold itself wasn't evil.
- 24:05That gold came from Egypt. That gold was provision given to
- 24:12the Israelites by Egypt as they exited.
- 24:17That was ordained by God, right? God gave it to Israel as they
- 24:23left, and later God tells them to use this same gold to build
- 24:31the Tabernacle to house His presence.
- 24:36Same gold, 2 altars, one that hosted his presence and the
- 24:48other that replaced it. And suddenly you realise money
- 24:54itself isn't evil. Provision isn't evil, influence
- 25:02isn't evil, success isn't evil. The issue is, what is our heart
- 25:10doing with the gold? Because wounded hearts can turn
- 25:16gifts from God into substitutes for God very quickly.
- 25:22Some people use money to feel safe, to feel powerful, to avoid
- 25:26dependence, to numb pain, to prove worth, and to escape
- 25:32insecurity. And we don't melt gold into
- 25:36calves anymore. Well, not that I'm aware of, all
- 25:40right? We melted into endless hustle,
- 25:45emotional spending, status, addiction, comfort, self
- 25:53protection, and success without surrender.
- 25:59And some idols look really spiritual.
- 26:03You can build ministry without intimacy.
- 26:08You can build success without peace and wealth without trust
- 26:15or productivity without God's presence.
- 26:20But God never intended provision to replace his presence.
- 26:27And so .4 this morning, it's for each and every one of us found
- 26:33in this room. Or if you're listening to this
- 26:35message online, Jesus wants to heal our money stories.
- 26:40Is there anybody here has the faith to believe that Jesus
- 26:42wants to heal? Some of us today are exhausted,
- 26:48not because of money itself, but because of the fear attached to
- 26:53it. Some of us panic every time a
- 26:56bill arrives. Some of us avoid our finances
- 27:00because shame overwhelms us. Some of us work constantly
- 27:05because you're terrified of ever feeling powerless again.
- 27:12Some of us are still reacting from wounds created 20 years
- 27:16ago. But Jesus wants to heal the root
- 27:20cause, not just manage the this is the symptom.
- 27:26And I believe the Holy Spirit is saying today you do not need to
- 27:30live in survival mode anymore. When I wrote that particular
- 27:37line down, I, I saw a young lady, there's a young lady here
- 27:40today and God just wants to say to you, you were never designed
- 27:44to live in survival mode. You were never designed to live
- 27:49in survival mode. You do not need to live in that
- 27:53state any longer. You are not trapped in the story
- 27:57that you have come from. I want to unpack this just a
- 28:01little bit before the team comes through.
- 28:03An incredible, incredible story in the Word of God.
- 28:07It's a parable that Jesus tells about a prodigal son in Luke
- 28:111511 to 32. The prodigal son demands his
- 28:17inheritance early. Can you hear it?
- 28:23Why? Because wounded people often
- 28:27want quick provision without healthy process.
- 28:33He took the money. And if you've read the story,
- 28:36you know he wasted it, and he wasted it quickly.
- 28:42He wasted it recklessly. But the greatest loss in this
- 28:47story is not the finances or the loss of it, it was the loss of
- 28:52his identity. As this young man becomes aware
- 29:00that he has nothing, when the money runs out, the friends
- 29:05leave, the lifestyle leaves. This young man is left with
- 29:10nothing and he finds himself working on a farm with pigs and
- 29:16eating the pigs food. And this is what he says.
- 29:20And I actually think this is one of the most heartbreaking lines
- 29:23in the word of God. It says I am no longer worthy to
- 29:27be called a son. When we have a wound in this
- 29:35space, this is what it attacks every time is our identity.
- 29:41And so it is not not just the patterns that repeat, but
- 29:45actually how we see ourselves. And we can't filter and see God
- 29:51and how he sees us because we carry this and we go, I'm not
- 29:55worthy. We come and we stand to pray in
- 30:00a time that we're going to do give tithes and offerings and we
- 30:03go, I'm not worthy to stand. I'm going to stand.
- 30:05I'm going to put my hands in my pocket and I'm going to agree.
- 30:08And you know what? I know God's principles to be
- 30:10true, but I just, I can't. I'm not worthy to be part of
- 30:15this. This is what financial trauma
- 30:20and wounds and pain does. It attacks identity.
- 30:25People begin to believe I will never get ahead.
- 30:29I will always fail financially. There will never be enough.
- 30:35I'm just bad with money. Or if I get a better job then
- 30:40maybe things will sort themselves out.
- 30:43Or this is how my family has always been.
- 30:47Do you know, I believe that over this series that God is going to
- 30:51give individuals in this church the faith to come off welfare
- 30:58and not because it's a close goal.
- 31:03I actually felt that before we began to pray, Graham and I were
- 31:08sort of preparing what we were going to do this season.
- 31:10And I actually had this sense that some individuals are going
- 31:15to walk out of this year who completely depended on welfare,
- 31:21on Centrelink. And you're going to walk out of
- 31:25this year not because it's just been handed to you, but God is
- 31:29going to give you the faith, say faith.
- 31:33He's going to give you the faith to believe that there is a
- 31:36different way of living for you. And this is, please hear me,
- 31:45This is not to say that welfare is bad.
- 31:47Welfare is not bad. We live in one of the most
- 31:49blessed countries on the planet. I am so grateful for what the
- 31:54government has actually provided so that no person actually has
- 31:59to live under like in destitution.
- 32:03Yes, people still fall through the cracks and we understand all
- 32:07of the economy and all of those things.
- 32:09The Bible says the poor will always be with us.
- 32:12Where to be about that work as the church.
- 32:17It's not that. It's just Oh well, it'll always
- 32:19be like that and I can't do anything about it.
- 32:21No, it calls you and I, the word of God calls you and I to be a
- 32:26source and an answer and and we can only be a source and an
- 32:31answer in these spaces. If you and I truly put our faith
- 32:35in the Lord and say God you, I know you can shift this in my
- 32:39what I know you can heal this and so that you would bring
- 32:42enough for me to not just look after what I've got to do, but
- 32:46do what you want to do through me.
- 32:51I'm always marked by that scripture that says he was
- 32:53faithful with the little we'll be entrusted much.
- 33:01Grey and I had the privilege and honour of serving Pastor
- 33:04Rachel's parents for nine years before we became the senior
- 33:08leaders. And I remember sitting in Pastor
- 33:10X office one day and he was talking to us about leadership
- 33:13styles. And he said this particular
- 33:16leadership principle he shared with us, he said you can use in
- 33:20every area, but he said it's really powerful when you do this
- 33:23financially. He said in every situation, when
- 33:26you're talking with people or when you're, you know, at work
- 33:30and maybe you've got a little bit of conflict or whatever's
- 33:33going on, anything you do, but particularly finance, he says,
- 33:37remain open handed. And it marked Grey.
- 33:42And I, if we didn't hold it, God could get things to us so he
- 33:50could get them through us. And we've had seasons,
- 33:54incredible seasons where we have done life really, really tight.
- 34:00We've not known where the next meal is coming from and yet are
- 34:06marked by God's faithfulness that a Bible college year for
- 34:10Gray and I. When Gray did college, he we
- 34:14made the decision to step out of faith and do college and to
- 34:17leave work to do so. I was a stay at home mum at the
- 34:21time, actually volunteering for Pastor Rick and Jenny and so
- 34:26there was no way possible for us to do this, but we did know that
- 34:32God had asked it of us. It always takes a step of faith
- 34:38and you don't know the answer ahead.
- 34:41You don't know the outcome ahead.
- 34:43You don't actually know except that the Lord is ordering your
- 34:47steps. When Gray and I did our budget
- 34:51at the end of Bible college year, we couldn't explain it.
- 34:55It was one of the first years we actually went back and audited
- 34:58the year financially. Even had to do it when you, like
- 35:01most of us, go and do our tax. Gray and I earned more finance
- 35:07that year, in a year of choosing to leave security and step out
- 35:14in faith. More money flowed through our
- 35:18world that year than any year ever that we had ever
- 35:24experienced. And Gray and I had walked some
- 35:26really financially prosperous years before that.
- 35:31We can only say it was the hand of God.
- 35:38I have the faith to believe that there are those here today who
- 35:41carry that same faith, who have a seed of faith to say it could
- 35:46be different for me, could be different for my life.
- 35:51And God wants to do something this morning as we humble
- 35:56ourselves, humble our hearts and open them to him this morning
- 36:00and say, God, you have permission to do something here.
- 36:04In my story, this is the significant thing about this.
- 36:10When the Sun, the prodigal son, returns home, the father doesn't
- 36:15talk about the inheritance, about the money squandered.
- 36:26The Big Brother did. Money always reveals our hearts.
- 36:33The Father just saw a son and he restored identity as the opening
- 36:42statement. This is what God does with you
- 36:48and I If we'd run to him, even if we've got nothing, even if we
- 36:55feel like, if you feel like everything's gone and it's
- 36:58always striving and always never enough, always the same cycle,
- 37:05always the same pattern, and it's left a mark on you.
- 37:10This is just. Will it always be the same?
- 37:15When you come to the Father, the first thing he's going to do is
- 37:19restore identity. He's going to remind you of your
- 37:24sonship and put a ring on your finger and throw a feast.
- 37:30This is not just a story of salvation.
- 37:33This is who our Father is and how He operates with you and I.
- 37:40The Holy Spirit heals identity before He rebuilds stewardship.
- 37:45God is restoring trust where money is brought trauma this
- 37:50morning. I wonder if you'd close your
- 37:51eyes as I just begin to draw this out because I believe that
- 37:55there is going to be ministry here this morning and that
- 37:57people are going to respond. God is restoring trust where
- 38:03money's brought trauma. There is healing this morning
- 38:06for scarcity thinking, for fear based control, for striving, for
- 38:14orphan thinking, for shame, for anxiety around provision.
- 38:21Because God is not merely trying to improve your finances.
- 38:25God is restoring sons and daughters today.
- 38:31And so today, I believe there are people here who are going to
- 38:35receive an identity this morning, a moment in the
- 38:40presence of God that is going to be restorative to your identity,
- 38:46not because you're bad with money.
- 38:51And I want you to hear that church this morning.
- 38:53For those of you who have the faith to respond this morning,
- 38:58it's not because you're bad with money, but because money has
- 39:03attached to pain. Somewhere along the journey and
- 39:07maybe today, you realise I don't actually trust God with my
- 39:11provision. I've been living in fear.
- 39:17I use control to feel safe. I have carried financial shame,
- 39:24but no longer. And I'm exhausted from striving.
- 39:31Or I'm tired of living in survival moment or survival
- 39:35mode. Today I'm going to run to the
- 39:39Father with every head bowed across this place.
- 39:44I want to ask you the question again.
- 39:48What is your first memory of money?
- 39:57And if this morning it is around any of these topics?
- 40:02Fear, conflict, stress, lack, embarrassment, instability.
- 40:12I'm wondering if in faith you would respond by standing today
- 40:19in an act of running to the Father.
- 40:22Would you just stand right where you're at?
- 40:24Nobody's looking around because God's going to meet you right
- 40:29where you're at. And there is going to be
- 40:31incredible healing. There's people standing all over
- 40:33this place. Thank you Jesus, oh Holy Spirit,
- 40:42Holy Spirit, Holy Spirit, thank you Jesus.
- 40:46Thank you for humble hearts this morning.
- 40:49Thank you for people who are brave enough to say in faith,
- 40:52you know what, I'm going to trust the Lord.
- 40:56What has been my journey thus far does not need to stay the
- 40:59same. So for those who have stood so
- 41:02bravely in faith this morning, God, I pray that you would meet
- 41:08them like the Father, met the Son and instill and speak
- 41:14identity, identity restoration over them where there has been
- 41:18great wounds that have come and like the enemy does to kill,
- 41:23steal and destroy. Right now.
- 41:25Lord God, I pray your Holy Spirit comes in and gently heals
- 41:30right now, ministers and heals right now.
- 41:35We break yokes that have come from generations that have
- 41:38passed down patterns of lack or scarcity or gambling and abuse
- 41:44or insecurities around this fear.
- 41:48And we break those things in the name of Jesus Christ, that these
- 41:53sons and daughters may walk forward with strength and with
- 41:57vigor and with faith, trusting you with your all that you have
- 42:02entrusted to them. I thank you, Lord God, that you
- 42:07are the Father who owns cattle on 1000 Hills.
- 42:14What a picture your provision. We can't even begin to
- 42:19understand your storehouses. We've never seen with our eyes.
- 42:26But this morning, we choose to lean into Your Holy Spirit's
- 42:31promptings and trust you
