Transcript
- 0:00Google set out to study what made some teams perform better than others.
- 0:04And they called this project Aristotle.
- 0:06They were trying to find a solution for more than a year, and it wasn't
- 0:09until they found the work of Amy Edmondson from Harvard that they
- 0:13found that missing ingredient.
- 0:15She describes psychological safety as " When people feel that their workplace is
- 0:19an environment where they can speak up, offer ideas and ask questions without the
- 0:24fear of being punished or embarrassed."
- 0:26No one gets up in the morning hoping to look ignorant,
- 0:29incompetent, intrusive or negative.
- 0:31And this is why we so often stay silent instead of speaking up, even
- 0:35when the consequences are high, because we're worried that speaking
- 0:39up is going to make us look bad.
- 0:40And so we've got to work against that as leaders.
- 0:43In fact, we have to assume that people are not speaking up as the default.
