- 0:01Speaker 1: The Hauraki Big Show with Jace, Mike and Keezy. Tune
- 0:04Speaker 1: in weekdays at 4 on Radio Hauraki.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Metallica there on the Radio Hauraki Big Show this Wednesday evening.
- 0:12Speaker 2: It's not often, fellas, you get a musical legend in
- 0:15Speaker 2: the studio with you, is it?
- 0:16Speaker 3: It's not.
- 0:18Speaker 4: Eh?
- 0:18Speaker 5: This guy hasn't shut up about it since he walked
- 0:20Speaker 5: into the studio.
- 0:21Speaker 2: I've got to be honest with you. I've never seen
- 0:24Speaker 2: Keezy so nervous. You know what I mean? He was
- 0:27Speaker 2: freaking out because he's such a legend. He's a songwriter,
- 0:30Speaker 2: a Grammy Award-winning songwriter, a producer. Have you heard of
- 0:34Speaker 2: a band called Goodnight Nurse?
- 0:35Speaker 5: Have I?
- 0:36Speaker 2: Jeez, well, he's part of that as well. I'm speaking,
- 0:39Speaker 2: of course, of the one and only Joel Little. G'day, Joel,
- 0:41Speaker 2: your man, Barnsley House Live. Hey, good, man.
- 0:44Speaker 3: What an intro, my goodness.
- 0:45Speaker 5: Is that the worst one you've ever had?
- 0:47Speaker 3: It's up there.
- 0:49Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah.
- 0:49Speaker 3: That was pretty good. Yeah, that was pretty good.
- 0:51Speaker 5: Yeah, thanks, man. I enjoyed that.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Well, I was up all night just, you know, writing
- 0:55Speaker 2: it out, writing it, then redoing it. Oh, God, it's
- 0:59Speaker 2: just not right yet.
- 1:00Speaker 3: I have that effect on people. I make them extremely nervous.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:03Speaker 4: The thing about you, Joel, you're very successful in the
- 1:05Speaker 4: music world, but you've got very chill Kiwi vibes about you.
- 1:08Speaker 4: You smell nice as well.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Oh, do I?
- 1:09Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:10Speaker 3: You can smell me from out here?
- 1:11Speaker 5: I thought that was me. No, that's Joel. I was
- 1:13Speaker 5: much closer to Joel than you were, and I didn't
- 1:16Speaker 5: think that at all.
- 1:17Speaker 6: Oh, right.
- 1:17Speaker 5: Now, that's nothing against Joel. There's more that you're getting
- 1:19Speaker 5: it wrong.
- 1:20Speaker 4: Okay, so there's a different smell in the studio.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Does it freak you out that Keezy's smelling you, Joel?
- 1:26Speaker 3: I mean... It's weird. It's fine.
- 1:29Speaker 5: It's fine.
- 1:29Speaker 3: I don't mind.
- 1:30Speaker 4: I always sniff the guests. Joel, you're obviously here because
- 1:34Speaker 4: Goodnight Nurse Man, 20 years since Always and Never, your
- 1:37Speaker 4: debut album came out.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Yep, the critically slandered debut.
- 1:40Speaker 5: Was it slandered? Was it really?
- 1:42Speaker 3: I mean, that's my memory of it.
- 1:44Speaker 5: But you must imagine, how old are you, man?
- 1:46Speaker 3: I'm 43.
- 1:46Speaker 5: 43, there you go. So I would imagine that that
- 1:50Speaker 5: would have been absolutely loved by the young ones back
- 1:53Speaker 5: in those days because Keezy's around about the perfect age.
- 1:55Speaker 5: Keezy would have been about... 15 when that came out,
- 1:58Speaker 5: would that be right? Yeah, 100%.
- 1:59Speaker 4: I've seen plenty of Goodnight Nurse on C4 back.
- 2:02Speaker 3: In the day.
- 2:04Speaker 4: On Selector, used to do the rounds.
- 2:06Speaker 3: Yep, for sure.
- 2:07Speaker 4: But 20 years, man. Does it feel like it's been
- 2:10Speaker 4: 20 years?
- 2:12Speaker 3: Not really. Maybe in some ways. I definitely feel like
- 2:15Speaker 3: going back and having to relearn the songs. Wow. It
- 2:19Speaker 3: feels like it was a while ago. But then also
- 2:21Speaker 3: the muscle memory just kicks in and then it's like
- 2:23Speaker 3: no time has passed, you know?
- 2:26Speaker 2: How was it, you know, 20 years on when you,
- 2:28Speaker 2: you know, as you say, going back and doing the
- 2:30Speaker 2: songs again, are you thinking in your head, shit, this
- 2:33Speaker 2: is good? Or how do you feel about your songs now?
- 2:38Speaker 3: I mean, it's weird. I feel like it was a
- 2:39Speaker 3: different person when I listen back to it. I feel
- 2:43Speaker 3: like there's just like a nostalgia to it. There's something
- 2:45Speaker 3: about those songs that I feel like. When we were
- 2:48Speaker 3: those kids and we were trying to crack it with
- 2:49Speaker 3: the band and all of that, we were so earnest
- 2:52Speaker 3: and so genuine and just really gave it everything that
- 2:55Speaker 3: we bloody had at the time.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Yeah, totally, man.
- 2:57Speaker 3: I feel like you can hear that in the songs,
- 2:58Speaker 3: and I think that's why people still listen to it
- 3:02Speaker 3: and people still email us about us getting back together
- 3:04Speaker 3: and playing shows and stuff. And I think you can
- 3:06Speaker 3: hear a little bit of that genuineness in there.
- 3:08Speaker 5: Yes.
- 3:09Speaker 3: It's fun to revisit it. It's fun to listen back
- 3:11Speaker 3: and just be like, man, I remember being that kid.
- 3:14Speaker 2: I've got to tell you on that front, I used
- 3:15Speaker 2: to do stand-up comedy, Joel, and I used to be
- 3:17Speaker 2: in a duo called Sugar and Spice, and we were
- 3:19Speaker 2: a very physical, energetic, sort of enthusiastic duo, and it
- 3:23Speaker 2: was a very physical-orientated show. and then about 15 years
- 3:28Speaker 2: after we stopped doing comedy, we went back and did
- 3:31Speaker 2: a gig and redid one of our sets. We were
- 3:33Speaker 2: rooted after two.
- 3:35Speaker 5: I'm not joking, man.
- 3:35Speaker 2: We were rooted after two minutes.
- 3:37Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Just wheezing and puffing.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a bit like that. I mean, we got
- 3:41Speaker 3: back together three years ago after we hadn't played in
- 3:44Speaker 3: 13 years, and we opened for Mikey McRomance, which was awesome.
- 3:48Speaker 3: There was like 17,000 people, and that was cool. That
- 3:50Speaker 3: was like one show, and I was tired.
- 3:52Speaker 5: After that.
- 3:52Speaker 3: And now we've just had to double the size of
- 3:55Speaker 3: this tour to six shows.
- 3:56Speaker 4: How good is that?
- 3:57Speaker 3: It's awesome.
- 3:58Speaker 2: I know, right?
- 3:58Speaker 3: But I'm like, man, how am I going to... How's
- 4:00Speaker 3: the body going to handle it? How's my voice going
- 4:02Speaker 3: to handle singing that high? Like I haven't done that
- 4:04Speaker 3: in a minute.
- 4:05Speaker 4: Joe Little. So Goodnight Nurse, that sort of early mid
- 4:09Speaker 4: 2000s phase for me was a very important time for
- 4:11Speaker 4: my musical development. And so a lot of bands, like
- 4:14Speaker 4: for example, your LMNOPs, for example, even like Scribe and
- 4:19Speaker 4: just all these great New Zealand artists were coming through
- 4:21Speaker 4: and they still really resonated with me. So I'm not surprised.
- 4:25Speaker 4: at the response to you guys doing a massive tour
- 4:28Speaker 4: you know what i mean because for guys my age
- 4:31Speaker 4: yeah as soon as you hear that those bands are
- 4:33Speaker 4: happening again you're like oh shit yeah yeah it.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Was such a i feel like when you like there's
- 4:37Speaker 3: there's an age that you kind of you know that
- 4:38Speaker 3: you go through from i don't know mid-teens to mid-20s
- 4:41Speaker 3: where you just have so many adventures and yeah you're
- 4:44Speaker 3: like hitting the piss for the first time and you're
- 4:46Speaker 3: like making all these lifelong friends and The music brings
- 4:49Speaker 3: those memories back.
- 4:50Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
- 4:50Speaker 3: There's a bit of that going on.
- 4:52Speaker 4: 100%.
- 4:52Speaker 2: I'll tell you what, Joe. We'll take a break here.
- 4:54Speaker 2: We've got a tune from Goodnight Nurse, surely?
- 4:56Speaker 4: Yeah, we're going to Death Goes to Disco, Joe.
- 5:00Speaker 5: Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Get around it.
- 5:01Speaker 4: Goodnight Nurse.
- 5:02Speaker 3: All right.
- 5:03Speaker 1: The Hauraki Beach Show, weekdays from 4 on Radio Hauraki.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Now that's good listening.
- 5:11Speaker 5: And it's live. What are you listening to there? Oh, me? Oh, sorry.
- 5:16Speaker 2: I was listening to the Radio Hauraki Big Show.
- 5:21Speaker 5: Right.
- 5:21Speaker 3: Four to seven weekdays.
- 5:24Speaker 5: Yeah, that's quite specific.
- 5:26Speaker 4: And iHeartRadio.
- 5:28Speaker 5: What? Cheers.
- 5:31Speaker 1: The Hauraki Big Show Podcast.
- 5:33Speaker 3: Cheers.
- 5:34Speaker 5: Cheers.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Good night, news. We've got one of the members of
- 5:38Speaker 2: that band, Joel Little, with us. Because you're back, baby,
- 5:44Speaker 2: as they say, and you're doing a show. What is it,
- 5:46Speaker 2: a six-show tour?
- 5:47Speaker 3: Yeah, it started out as three. We were just going
- 5:49Speaker 3: to do Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, but now the three original
- 5:53Speaker 3: shows have all sold out. So we're doing one more
- 5:55Speaker 3: in each city.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Yeah, nice.
- 5:57Speaker 4: Now, Joel, when you guys planned this tour to begin with,
- 6:01Speaker 4: did you allow for this to happen or is this
- 6:04Speaker 4: completely taken you by surprise?
- 6:05Speaker 3: No, this has definitely taken us by surprise. We were like,
- 6:07Speaker 3: are people actually going to come to this? I'm not
- 6:10Speaker 3: trying to be falsely modest. This is actually how we felt.
- 6:14Speaker 3: But it's been awesome. I feel like, yeah, I mean,
- 6:16Speaker 3: we didn't, We put like a little teaser up and
- 6:18Speaker 3: we were like, oh, people seem kind of excited about
- 6:20Speaker 3: the fact that we're doing something, that something's going on.
- 6:22Speaker 3: And then when we put the shows up, it was like,
- 6:24Speaker 3: oh shit, like people are into it.
- 6:25Speaker 2: People are.
- 6:26Speaker 5: And pretty awesome that it's, you know, you guys are
- 6:29Speaker 5: a three piece. Effectively, New Zealand's answer to Nirvana, you'd
- 6:33Speaker 5: have to say. Have you remained tight with the other
- 6:35Speaker 5: guys in the band this whole time? Or was there
- 6:37Speaker 5: a huge rift that you had to overcome? Because one
- 6:40Speaker 5: of you was an absolute scumbag one night on tour.
- 6:43Speaker 5: Maybe slept with a girlfriend you shouldn't have or something.
- 6:45Speaker 3: There was none of that kind of carry-on with us,
- 6:47Speaker 3: but we did... I mean, we've kind of... What's the word?
- 6:52Speaker 3: Kind of moved in and out of being close friends.
- 6:55Speaker 3: Everyone has kids and all different things happen.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Yeah, life moves on.
- 6:58Speaker 3: Yeah, and Paul, the original bass player, he lives in
- 7:01Speaker 3: New York now, so we don't see him a whole lot,
- 7:02Speaker 3: but he's flying back down for the show.
- 7:04Speaker 5: Oh, that's good.
- 7:04Speaker 3: That's going to be cool, so the OG lineup. Yeah,
- 7:08Speaker 3: but I mean, again, it's that thing. It's almost... part
- 7:10Speaker 3: of the reason for doing it is an excuse for
- 7:12Speaker 3: us all to hang out and like, you know, we
- 7:13Speaker 3: go to band practice and stuff like the old days. And,
- 7:16Speaker 3: you know, if you say to your, see your wife now,
- 7:18Speaker 3: I want to go and, you know, just hang out
- 7:19Speaker 3: with my friends tonight. She's usually like, that's, you know,
- 7:22Speaker 3: no chance. But if you're like, we've got to go
- 7:24Speaker 3: and work on the, we've got to go work on
- 7:25Speaker 3: the songs and it's, you know, you've got a reason
- 7:27Speaker 3: for it.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Yeah, totally.
- 7:28Speaker 4: We've got Joel Little in from Goodnight Nurse. So the shows,
- 7:31Speaker 4: you've got one that's just been listed at the power station.
- 7:34Speaker 4: Another one, which is happening in Auckland on the 12th
- 7:36Speaker 4: of November is, You've put a second show in Christchurch,
- 7:39Speaker 4: which is already selling very fast at Loon's. And then
- 7:43Speaker 4: another show as well at San Fran in Wellington. If
- 7:45Speaker 4: you want tickets, check out Goodnight Nurse on Instagram. It's
- 7:48Speaker 4: underscore goodnightnurse underscore.
- 7:50Speaker 3: Okay, good to know. Thanks for confirming that for me.
- 7:54Speaker 2: I went to the power station for the first time
- 7:56Speaker 2: in about 15 years the other day to go and see.
- 7:58Speaker 2: I can't even remember the name of the band, to
- 8:00Speaker 2: be honest. How do you find the power station? It's
- 8:02Speaker 2: a great venue.
- 8:03Speaker 3: I love it.
- 8:03Speaker 2: It's a great venue.
- 8:04Speaker 3: It's such a classic venue. And we've played there. I
- 8:06Speaker 3: think we've opened for somebody there once. We've never played
- 8:09Speaker 3: our own show there.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Right, okay.
- 8:10Speaker 3: Headlining.
- 8:10Speaker 4: How good Joel Little You have something in common with
- 8:15Speaker 4: these guys You guys all went to Taylor Swift's wedding
- 8:19Speaker 4: We were looking for you man I didn't see you
- 8:23Speaker 4: there It.
- 8:24Speaker 5: Was unbelievable We can't go into too much detail obviously
- 8:27Speaker 5: We signed a NDA Thank you very much But it
- 8:31Speaker 5: was difficult The hardest thing for me and Jase Was
- 8:34Speaker 5: what do you buy For the woman that's got everything
- 8:39Speaker 5: So we went with nothing Yeah, yeah, yeah. We got
- 8:41Speaker 5: her nothing.
- 8:41Speaker 4: Well, no, Jase, you took scorched almonds, didn't you?
- 8:44Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, but I ate those before we arrived. Oh, right.
- 8:47Speaker 2: We were starving.
- 8:48Speaker 4: What did you get her, Joel?
- 8:50Speaker 3: I don't know why everyone thinks that I– like I
- 8:52Speaker 3: posted a picture of myself– in New York in a
- 8:55Speaker 3: tuxedo on the day of the wedding, and everyone just
- 8:57Speaker 3: assumed that I was there.
- 8:58Speaker 5: Assumed that that was what was going on. Yeah, exactly.
- 9:00Speaker 3: I never said I went.
- 9:01Speaker 5: No, that's right. It's true.
- 9:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:02Speaker 4: I mean, why would the front man for Goodnight Nurse
- 9:05Speaker 4: be in? That doesn't make any sense.
- 9:06Speaker 5: The thing about what I heard was that Taylor Swift
- 9:09Speaker 5: and actually Travis even more so, massive fans of Goodnight Nurse.
- 9:13Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, he's a big pre-game Goodnight Nurse listener.
- 9:17Speaker 3: He heads out there with the Chiefs.
- 9:19Speaker 2: So obviously, you know, what have you been up to
- 9:21Speaker 2: other than the band stuff? Are you still producing and
- 9:24Speaker 2: all that sort of carry on?
- 9:25Speaker 3: Yeah, still producing. Still, you know, I've always just loved
- 9:28Speaker 3: writing songs. That's like my favorite thing to do. So
- 9:31Speaker 3: still doing a bunch of that. And then we have
- 9:32Speaker 3: our place Big Fan in Morningside, which is the not-for-profit venue.
- 9:37Speaker 5: How's it going?
- 9:37Speaker 3: Yeah, really good.
- 9:39Speaker 5: What a great thing to be doing.
- 9:40Speaker 3: Yeah thanks man yeah that's been super fun just you
- 9:42Speaker 3: know we run a bunch of free programs there for
- 9:44Speaker 3: people to come and upskill with their you know whatever
- 9:47Speaker 3: it might be with their musical careers whether they want
- 9:49Speaker 3: to be a producer or an artist or you know
- 9:51Speaker 3: work behind the scenes and yeah that's been really.
- 9:53Speaker 4: Fulfilling seeing some good talent come through there Joel.
- 9:56Speaker 6: Yeah yeah yeah yeah heaps of really good stuff how
- 9:59Speaker 6: do you see things now from 20 years ago to
- 10:02Speaker 6: now in terms of the New Zealand music scene because
- 10:04Speaker 6: it feels like it's thriving but I could be completely wrong.
- 10:09Speaker 3: I don't know. I mean, I feel like there's always
- 10:13Speaker 3: room to improve. I mean, the talent's out there for sure.
- 10:16Speaker 3: I feel like it's harder and harder for venues to
- 10:19Speaker 3: kind of stay open.
- 10:22Speaker 5: Is it true that a lot of the venues have
- 10:23Speaker 5: been bought out by some of the bigger companies, which
- 10:26Speaker 5: is sort of getting a stranglehold on some of those
- 10:30Speaker 5: venues and the access to them?
- 10:32Speaker 3: I've heard that about... about live nation but i don't
- 10:34Speaker 3: know any really know anything about myself sure um but
- 10:38Speaker 3: um yeah it's uh i don't know i feel like
- 10:40Speaker 3: it's cool to do it's cool to see all of
- 10:42Speaker 3: the people coming through big fan and how like just
- 10:46Speaker 3: how much skill there is and how passionate people are
- 10:48Speaker 3: about it and all that i feel like as long
- 10:50Speaker 3: as that's there then there's hope you know.
- 10:51Speaker 5: But i guess when we grew up and i say
- 10:54Speaker 5: we've been you know 15 years older than you or
- 10:56Speaker 5: whatever i am something disgraceful But when we're growing up,
- 10:59Speaker 5: there was, you know, you're always going to pubs, there
- 11:01Speaker 5: was always live music, there was a big drinking culture
- 11:03Speaker 5: around it as well. And it feels like the drinking
- 11:06Speaker 5: culture is slightly ebbed away because probably in no small
- 11:09Speaker 5: part to the fact that it's so bloody expensive.
- 11:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:12Speaker 5: And so that's a difficult thing as well. Where is
- 11:15Speaker 5: the community for young people to come together to actually
- 11:17Speaker 5: listen to music? And especially with Jesus, man, I'm looking
- 11:20Speaker 5: at ticket prices at the moment. As a guy that's older,
- 11:23Speaker 5: $ 300 to go and see Faith No More, $ 200 to
- 11:26Speaker 5: go and see Queens of the Stone Age. The prices
- 11:29Speaker 5: are astronomical.
- 11:31Speaker 3: Yeah, they are. I mean, I think it's tough for
- 11:34Speaker 3: everyone to be, tough for those bands to be touring
- 11:37Speaker 3: and be able to budget for that. And so the
- 11:39Speaker 3: prices are just going up and Yeah, and the drinking
- 11:41Speaker 3: thing is interesting. I mean, yeah, everyone's saying that 18-year-olds
- 11:44Speaker 3: are not drinking as much, but I've got an 18-year-old daughter,
- 11:48Speaker 3: and I definitely would. It doesn't seem to be the
- 11:50Speaker 3: experience with her.
- 11:52Speaker 2: Same. Same, mate. Yeah. Hey, well, Joel Little, Goodnight Nurse,
- 11:57Speaker 2: those dates again there, Keezy?
- 11:58Speaker 4: Oh, look, it's throughout November, but your best bet if
- 12:02Speaker 4: you want to go to one in either Auckland, Christchurch,
- 12:04Speaker 4: or Wellington is to head to Goodnight Nurse's Instagram page.
- 12:07Speaker 5: The details are there.
- 12:08Speaker 2: Yeah, beautiful.
- 12:09Speaker 4: But it's happening in November.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Very exciting stuff.
- 12:11Speaker 4: Joel, thanks for coming in.
- 12:12Speaker 3: Thanks for having me, guys. Good to talk to you.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Pleasure.
- 12:15Speaker 4: Have you heard of Guns N' Roses?
- 12:17Speaker 5: Ah, yes, I have, yeah.
- 12:18Speaker 3: Perfect.
- 12:19Speaker 1: The Hodaki Big Show with Jace, Mike and Keezy. Tune
- 12:23Speaker 1: in weekdays at 4 on Radio Hodaki.
