Latest / THE DAILY BRIEF / KIMMEL BEATS TRUMP as Texas Dem surges & Colbert goes full 'Captain America
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Turning to something you don't see every night, Stephen Colbert
- 0:04Speaker 1: joining one-time television rival, or at least time slot, same
- 0:08Speaker 1: time slot, Jimmy Kimmel, to discuss the kind of strange
- 0:14Speaker 1: journey they've been on that tells you a lot about
- 0:16Speaker 1: not only American politics under Trump, but the need to
- 0:19Speaker 1: have a First Amendment in this country.
- 0:23Speaker 2: People still do this. People still do this show. Rarely ever.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Many fond memories of this. Do you? Do you think
- 0:32Speaker 2: about it ever? Nope. I will say.
- 0:36Speaker 3: I have an opportunity to not think about the news
- 0:38Speaker 3: every day, and I took it.
- 0:40Speaker 4: You took it, yeah. You just seemed like a different person.
- 0:42Speaker 4: You seemed happier. You seemed healthier.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Like I don't drink a cup of poison every day?
- 0:47Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. Because part of the.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Job is, the old gig, as I remember it, was
- 0:53Speaker 3: to be lowered like carbon rods into a radioactive pool
- 0:56Speaker 3: every day, and then to be pulled out and put
- 0:59Speaker 3: in front of a camera and to irradiate it back
- 1:01Speaker 3: at the audience at a non-lethal rad level.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Colbert obviously having fun, joking. He is a great comedian
- 1:10Speaker 1: and orator, so he's exaggerating.
- 1:12Speaker 2: But you see his beard?
- 1:14Speaker 1: He actually shaved it on live TV, the backstory being
- 1:17Speaker 1: that he made a promise to his wife. Apparently there
- 1:20Speaker 1: was some disagreement in the house about the value of
- 1:23Speaker 1: the beard, and he promised his wife he would shave
- 1:26Speaker 1: it if he won an Emmy this year.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Congratulations. Thank you very much. Not just to you, but
- 1:32Speaker 2: to your whole staff. You guys won six Emmys. Seven, actually.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Seven Emmys.
- 1:37Speaker 4: You know, it was fun because usually Emmys, you're just
- 1:40Speaker 4: sitting in a row. But we got to sit with
- 1:41Speaker 4: Jon Stewart and Jon Oliver with that photographer.
- 1:44Speaker 3: The photographer came over and he goes, oh, look at
- 1:46Speaker 3: all you got.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Let's get one shot of all you, all you hosts together.
- 1:49Speaker 3: So we got up and got a little circle and
- 1:51Speaker 3: the guy said.
- 1:52Speaker 4: And the guy said, oh, it's the endangered table. And
- 1:57Speaker 4: look at our faces there. That's the reaction we all
- 2:00Speaker 4: had to that.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Kind of fun to get the backstory.
- 2:05Speaker 2: When you have that photo there, though.
- 2:07Speaker 1: This endangered table, there are too many seats because.
- 2:12Speaker 2: The joke is fine.
- 2:15Speaker 1: It's hard to do comedy in a country like this
- 2:18Speaker 1: under Trump. But the truth is what you see here,
- 2:21Speaker 1: a level of attack, legal and otherwise, on the free
- 2:26Speaker 1: press in this country and the tech companies. Our earlier
- 2:29Speaker 1: guest tonight talked about the early capitulations and so-called settlements.
- 2:33Speaker 2: This is the real deal. And Trump is still going.
- 2:36Speaker 1: After Kimmel's parent company, ABC, threatening their broadcast licenses over
- 2:42Speaker 1: the programming, the free speech, the First Amendment that he
- 2:45Speaker 1: doesn't like. Donald Trump doesn't. is for cancel culture. He
- 2:50Speaker 1: is against the First Amendment. He is, in the modern era,
- 2:54Speaker 1: since Nixon, the most anti-First Amendment, pro-censorship, pro-cancel culture.
- 2:59Speaker 2: President we've had.
- 3:00Speaker 1: And you might say, I don't know, I remember all
- 3:02Speaker 1: this branding about him being against it. Just like he
- 3:04Speaker 1: was against wars in Iran, or for Epstein transparency.
- 3:09Speaker 2: On a lot of.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Big issues, the great reality show communicator got a lot
- 3:13Speaker 1: of people saying words that are the opposite of his
- 3:16Speaker 1: real plans.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Now, that doesn't mean all the censorship is working.
- 3:21Speaker 1: We reported from day one on how Kimmel outwitted the
- 3:24Speaker 1: FCC by taking the entire Texas Democratic candidate, Tallarico, interview
- 3:29Speaker 1: to YouTube, an interview that has now reached more people
- 3:34Speaker 1: there by a magnitude of over five than Kimmel's entire
- 3:38Speaker 1: live show.
- 3:42Speaker 4: This is not the first time you've been demoted to
- 3:44Speaker 4: YouTube when you were on Stephen Colbert's show.
- 3:46Speaker 2: That's right. This same, very same thing happened. Why are
- 3:49Speaker 2: they so scared of you?
- 3:50Speaker 6: Well, they're worried that we're going to win this race
- 3:53Speaker 6: in Texas.
- 3:53Speaker 2: They are.
- 3:55Speaker 6: They are terrified of this movement we're building in Texas,
- 3:58Speaker 6: working people coming together across party and race and gender
- 4:03Speaker 6: and religion and culture to take on the people at
- 4:06Speaker 6: the top who have been screwing us over for far
- 4:08Speaker 6: too long now.
- 4:09Speaker 2: I have to say.
- 4:12Speaker 1: That's just some of the censored interview that's being viewed
- 4:16Speaker 1: so many times, and we've played clips here because it's newsworthy.
- 4:19Speaker 1: It is still bad news when telling jokes and talking
- 4:24Speaker 1: to candidates in America is something that becomes a fighting cause,
- 4:29Speaker 1: an ongoing month-by-month battle to just tell jokes, because.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Freedom of speech comes in all shapes and sizes. But
- 4:39Speaker 2: it is a good sign that so.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Many people, including apparently people in Texas, are standing up
- 4:45Speaker 1: against that, deciding they will watch what they want to
- 4:49Speaker 1: watch and not rely on the government censors. Colbert and
- 4:53Speaker 1: Kimmel uniting while the government can't take a joke.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Your thoughts.
- 4:59Speaker 5: I am reminded of one of the best quotes from
- 5:01Speaker 5: Deep Impact, a movie that your upcoming guest Morgan Freeman
- 5:04Speaker 5: was in. And he mentioned that, you know, when cities fall,
- 5:07Speaker 5: we rebuild them. But when heroes fall, we remember them.
- 5:11Speaker 5: We will remember Stephen Colbert. We will remember Jimmy Kimmel
- 5:16Speaker 5: if he's pushed off the air. These people are not
- 5:18Speaker 5: being hyperbolic when I say this. These people will be
- 5:21Speaker 5: known and remembered as sort of fighters in the First
- 5:25Speaker 5: Amendment battles that we had under this administration. People who
- 5:28Speaker 5: Could have capitulated in advance. They could have changed their jokes.
- 5:31Speaker 5: They could have stepped down. They could have backed away.
- 5:33Speaker 2: And they didn't. And it was an amazing night and an.
- 5:36Speaker 5: Example of how even people with tremendous wealth and power
- 5:39Speaker 5: can still put themselves in the line of sight and
- 5:41Speaker 5: stand up for everyone else.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Respect.
- 5:44Speaker 1: And we know how this works a little bit. We're around,
- 5:46Speaker 1: you know, I don't know about you, but I'm around the.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Media, Jason.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Sometimes the test is right in your lane and you
- 5:54Speaker 1: got to kind of deal with it.
- 5:56Speaker 2: They had an easy dodge, right?
- 5:59Speaker 1: They could say, you know, ha, ha, ha, but mostly
- 6:02Speaker 1: I do a monologue. I'm supposed to have jokes. And
- 6:04Speaker 1: then you've seen my guests. Most of them are not
- 6:06Speaker 1: Senate candidates.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Right. So they could have said, you know, I'm going
- 6:09Speaker 2: to steer back to that. That's kind of what this
- 6:10Speaker 2: show has always been about. And they could have. And
- 6:13Speaker 2: they didn't.
- 6:15Speaker 1: And I think that that bears noting. And even the
- 6:17Speaker 1: Tallarico thing, they could say, well. You know, let's just
- 6:21Speaker 1: leave it. It's been a whole fight. We don't do
- 6:23Speaker 1: a lot of candidates, which is true. Most midterm candidates
- 6:26Speaker 1: are not on any of the late night shows. And instead,
- 6:29Speaker 1: I'm going to put it back up because it is
- 6:31Speaker 1: a we talked about profiles and courage.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Right. This is a. A profile in boomeranging.
- 6:38Speaker 1: The effort to censor the interview we have Kimmel here
- 6:42Speaker 1: has actually enhanced it only because they chose to fight
- 6:46Speaker 1: by putting it on YouTube.
- 6:47Speaker 2: That puts it out to the world.
- 6:48Speaker 1: And oh, my gosh, we are way over the normal
- 6:51Speaker 1: audience and the intrigue. I mean, I'll tell folks they
- 6:54Speaker 1: titled it, you know, the interview the FCC doesn't want
- 6:57Speaker 1: you to see. Americans don't like being told what to
- 7:00Speaker 1: watch or what to think, Jason, including by right wing overlords,
- 7:04Speaker 1: even in Texas.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Right.
- 7:06Speaker 5: And here's the thing, Ari, you know, to sort of paraphrase,
- 7:09Speaker 5: you know, I got beef with the FCC. They won't
- 7:12Speaker 5: let me play my hits.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Right. And he said, I don't care. And he took
- 7:15Speaker 2: it to YouTube. And here's the thing.
- 7:17Speaker 5: It's not just that Tyler Rico got a lot more attention.
- 7:20Speaker 5: Jimmy Kimmel saw what happened to Stephen Colbert. He knew
- 7:23Speaker 5: he was putting himself in the line of sight. So
- 7:25Speaker 5: not only does the show improve, but the Tyler Rico
- 7:27Speaker 5: interview actually got more views than Trump's speech at the
- 7:31Speaker 5: midterm of Palooza in Texas. So it is a victory
- 7:34Speaker 5: on multiple levels, both politically and culturally. And that's one
- 7:37Speaker 5: of the things that makes it both a brave move
- 7:39Speaker 5: and an indicator. People don't like being told what to watch,
- 7:42Speaker 5: but they will watch what they think is important.
- 7:44Speaker 7: Hey, it's me, Rachel Maddow. If you like the story
- 7:47Speaker 7: you just watched, you should know about a new way
- 7:49Speaker 7: to see even more from my show and from all
