- 0:28Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30So today we are talking about how to handle really hard things
- 0:36when they show up. And reason we're talking about
- 0:39this is this morning I opened the doors to the coop.
- 0:42I had a plan to talk about something completely different
- 0:44and I'd had a chicken that was not well, I mean she was, she
- 0:49was not OK for the last month, but I thought it was because she
- 0:52was molting. She looked like she was not
- 0:55feeling well. I was giving her electrolytes
- 0:57and all kinds of things to try to help her.
- 1:00And lo and behold, yesterday she took a turn for the worse and I
- 1:04wasn't sure how she was going to do, but she ate last night and
- 1:07she I made her some squishy scrambled eggs.
- 1:10Believe it or not, they love scrambled eggs.
- 1:12And she ate them all and she seemed like she was perking up
- 1:16and things were looking good in this morning.
- 1:17When I opened the coop doors, she was gone.
- 1:20And one, you know, this effects how you're going to go into your
- 1:26day if you allow these things to come with you.
- 1:28And of course, I'm incredibly sad, and I can see the other
- 1:31chickens coming in where they're going to lay in the boxes and
- 1:34they're all walking by her and looking at her because she was
- 1:37not somebody that was a lower chicken.
- 1:40She was a higher chicken. So they're all looking at her.
- 1:42And it really got me thinking about how normally I might not
- 1:45talk about something like this just because it was too
- 1:49immediate in the moment and that it was not necessarily something
- 1:53that is, you know, a part to help you out in your day being
- 1:57perked up in the morning. But then I thought, okay, I have
- 2:01to handle this for myself. So I'm going to talk about this
- 2:05because if I talk about it in the moment, it's going to give
- 2:07them insight. And that's exactly what we're
- 2:10going to do. So one, I am incredibly sad that
- 2:13she is gone because she was, she had such a personality.
- 2:18Just like people, when someone, when someone goes and passes, we
- 2:21all feel sad when a person passes.
- 2:24I feel that way for my chickens. I really honestly do.
- 2:27And some of them have more personalities than others.
- 2:31And if you follow us on, you know, social media, you can see
- 2:34that that is the case. And I'm always posting pictures.
- 2:36And this was one of them. That was one of my original hens
- 2:39and she had a big personality and I will miss her antics
- 2:44around here, especially when I open up the garden coming up.
- 2:46And that was one of her favorite things to do.
- 2:50The next thing is to sit there and say, OK, I acknowledge that
- 2:53I am incredibly sad about it. This is just part of it.
- 2:58This is part of having life. Sadness comes with life.
- 3:02Don't say to yourself, all right, I can't be sad.
- 3:05I can be sad. And we've talked before about
- 3:08how two things can be true at the same time, but the reality
- 3:11is multiple things can be true at the same time.
- 3:14And this is one of them. I can still be very happy with
- 3:17all of my chickens and feel very blessed in my life and feel very
- 3:21excited about, you know, the season that's coming up and
- 3:25everything else. I can feel very all those
- 3:27emotions at the same time, but that doesn't preclude me or
- 3:30prohibit me from feeling sad about the situation that just
- 3:34happened with with her. And her name was Ella, by the
- 3:37way. And so this is one of those
- 3:40things where you, you look at it and you say to yourself, yes, I
- 3:44can experience all these emotions at the same time and
- 3:48that is OK. It's more than OK, It's normal.
- 3:51It's human. So first, you know, realize it's
- 3:55that part of it is such a big chunk so that you don't feel
- 3:58like, Oh well, I'm doing her a disservice or I'm doing whatever
- 4:02the situation may be. Because you might be feeling
- 4:04sadness for things in your mind much bigger than a chicken and
- 4:08it, and it probably is, but the reality, you can feel all of it
- 4:13and still be OK. And it's not wrong to feel good.
- 4:16This afternoon I have to go off and do something that's going to
- 4:20be very fun. And I am, I am just going to go
- 4:25and I'm going to have fun even though I'm incredibly sad.
- 4:28So it's it is part of being human to be multi faceted when
- 4:34it comes to emotions. And we can accept that.
- 4:37And the third part of this that I think is not just such a big
- 4:40thing is to recognize that when you're in this process, you will
- 4:45dip in and out. You will feel the moments of
- 4:47sadness and you will feel the moments of forgetting it.
- 4:50And then all of a sudden it comes back and you're like, oh,
- 4:52I forgot. And then you feel bad that you
- 4:54forgot, but don't feel bad that you forgot.
- 4:57It's OK. That's how our brains process
- 5:00things. Just take yourself and go into a
- 5:03headspace of accepting it and things will feel a lot more
- 5:06normalized over time. It just takes time.
- 5:09I mean, I've lost my father when I was in my mid 20s.
- 5:13And I will say this, I still miss them every single day.
- 5:17It does not feel the same way as I always tell people, it's not
- 5:20that they it ever changes in the sense that you know, you ever
- 5:24forget or it just goes away. It just gets different.
- 5:27So it's important to remember that and accept that and be OK
- 5:30with that. So I hope this was helpful.
- 5:33My friends and I will see you all tomorrow and I hope you all
- 5:38have a blessed day. Bye.
