- 0:30Open your Bibles to John Chapter 11.
- 0:33We'll be looking at various verses today, but John Chapter
- 0:3711 is one of the places I like to stop, and we want to talk
- 0:40about the power of hope and hope arises.
- 0:46Jesus is alive, and we're grateful for the new life that
- 0:49we have in him. Can I get an Amen on that?
- 0:52That's why we gather God is doing something new in our day.
- 0:56This is something you have to pay attention to because when
- 0:58you're watching the news and you're seeing the condition of
- 1:01the world, it can really bum you out.
- 1:04There are a lot of difficult things happening.
- 1:06I mean, we are in what what we could describe as an upside down
- 1:09culture. You know, the Bible thousands of
- 1:12years ago predicted that there would be a day when people would
- 1:17call evil good and good evil. Well, we're in that day, and it
- 1:21doesn't take much to read a news article or watch the news, to
- 1:25see the difficulty around us and be very, very discouraged.
- 1:29But on a day like this, we're reminded that the culture
- 1:33doesn't get the last word, that even death itself does not get
- 1:38the last word in our lives because of the power of the
- 1:42resurrection of Jesus Christ. He kept all of his promises to
- 1:46us, you know, as a church. Listen, God is pouring out his
- 1:50spirit in fresh and powerful ways, and we need to be looking
- 1:53for it. It's our responsibility as sons
- 1:56and daughters to wake up and pay attention and to get into the
- 2:00flow of what God is doing, almost to step into the story of
- 2:05what God is doing on the earth today.
- 2:08And here we are gathered together for another Easter
- 2:11service. I didn't do, I didn't do the
- 2:13exact math, but we're a church now for almost 25 years.
- 2:17So this is either the 24th or the 25th year that we've had an
- 2:21Easter service. And they come every year with
- 2:24great regularity, and we anticipate them and we pray for
- 2:28them because Easter happens to be one of those times in the
- 2:31church life calendar where we have to add services to make
- 2:36room for the capacity of we know so many more will be in church
- 2:39today. And here we are, another Easter,
- 2:43worshipping and celebrating life to its fullest, the resurrection
- 2:48of Jesus Christ. But we have to pause, don't we?
- 2:51And ask a super important question.
- 2:54What is Easter about anyway? Why is it such a significant
- 3:00day? I mean, is it just about family
- 3:04and friends, as important as they might be?
- 3:08Eggs and bunnies? How significant are they?
- 3:12Extra candy and dinner with friends in the evening.
- 3:16I mean, sure, a lot of that surrounds the lives of many as
- 3:19Easter come and goes, comes and goes, but what about issues of?
- 3:25I mean, is Easter about the issue of life and death, Life
- 3:29and death topics that truly aren't at the top of our list on
- 3:36a day like this. But it's important that you
- 3:38realize Easter's all about life and death.
- 3:42It's all about the significance of sacrifice and forgiveness and
- 3:48second chances. Easter's profoundly a sad day
- 3:52for many as we come face to face with the reality of lost loved
- 3:56ones. You know, those that we've cared
- 3:59for, that have gone home to be with the Lord before us, and we
- 4:03miss them so much. I've stood as a pastor at the
- 4:08grave side of many. I've also stood at the grave
- 4:11side as a dad. I've stood at the grave side as
- 4:16a son, as a friend, as a husband.
- 4:21I mean, it's hard. Facing death is so significant
- 4:25that we really tried to pretend it doesn't exist.
- 4:30We don't really pay much attention to it because of how
- 4:34crushing and how harsh and how final it can be.
- 4:38We don't get to the resurrection unless we go through the cross.
- 4:43You see, the cross is the singular event in all of human
- 4:46history where by which God proved his love to humanity.
- 4:52The Bible actually says that. It says that God has proven his
- 4:55love as Jesus hung on the cross. And the cross, well, you can't
- 5:02get to the cross without going through the beating or what we
- 5:06commonly refer to in the church as Good Friday, Good Friday.
- 5:11On Good Friday, we gather together as a church and we talk
- 5:14about what happened to Jesus before the cross.
- 5:19You know, he was savagely beaten before he hung on the cross.
- 5:24There's actually a Bible word for that, a Bible word to
- 5:26describe the type of beating the two Roman soldiers, Very strong
- 5:31men would take these whips, these cords of leather in their
- 5:35hands, and they would literally beat with full force, one after
- 5:40another, on the back and on the legs and on on the heels and on
- 5:44the head of the man that would be headed to the cross.
- 5:48The Bible word for that is scourging, scourging.
- 5:52Jesus predicted that he would be scourged, beaten on, spit upon.
- 5:59We learn from the Bible that not only was he beaten and spit
- 6:01upon, but they fashioned a crown of thorns and twisted it into
- 6:05his head. You know, before we get to the
- 6:09resurrection, we have to deal with the cross, that singular
- 6:14event that provided the way of salvation and forgiveness for
- 6:18you and for me. And the cross equals death.
- 6:25It was a torturous death. And those that were following
- 6:30Jesus at the time, for them it was over.
- 6:35You know, when I'm reading the Bible, I like to step into it.
- 6:37I like to read it as as if I was there.
- 6:40And Jesus, you know, he surrounded himself with some
- 6:43faithful men and women that followed him very closely.
- 6:46In particular, there were 12. They gave up everything.
- 6:51I know for us as believers, we've given up much to follow
- 6:53Christ, there's a whole new try, transformation and a new life in
- 6:56our lives. I have it as so as so do you.
- 6:59But the kind of commitment that these 12 men and women and the
- 7:03women surrounding them that gave to Jesus was unlike ours.
- 7:07It's a very unique commitment. It's not even a commitment that
- 7:09Jesus requires today, but it was for them.
- 7:13They literally left everything they knew, everyone they knew
- 7:17and everything they had to follow him.
- 7:20So that for three years they spent 24 hours a day, seven days
- 7:24a week with this man. They served.
- 7:27They ate, they laughed, They went through hard times
- 7:30together. I mean, they were tight.
- 7:32They were close. They were as close as you could
- 7:35possibly be. But I want you to understand for
- 7:38the 12 that followed him, I mean, they are all in whatever
- 7:42your definition of all in is. There they have it.
- 7:46I mean, this is they have placed all their hope in this man.
- 7:51He to them is the fulfillment of the promises of God himself to
- 7:56them. They believed him when he
- 7:59claimed to be God in human flesh.
- 8:02They are ready to follow him anywhere and everywhere for the
- 8:06sake of honoring God and obeying him.
- 8:11But toward the end, after three years of spending their entire
- 8:16life with him, they abandoned him and ran away.
- 8:24In Jesus deepest, darkest time, those that were the most loyal
- 8:32and committed to Him, the Bible says they fled away.
- 8:39In my mind I picture them running away, staying distant,
- 8:43but close where they're distant. They're not right up with him,
- 8:49but they're watching and they're keeping him out of the corner of
- 8:53his eye. They're there when he's beaten
- 8:56and he, they hear it and they smell it.
- 9:02Maybe some of them see it. They watch him carrying his
- 9:07cross. They're close enough, but not
- 9:11close enough to help. They've abandoned him, but
- 9:16they're probably also wrestling with that.
- 9:20What am I doing? What have I done?
- 9:25And when they see Jesus, or they hear of him take his last
- 9:29breath, it's over. It's over.
- 9:36It's done. There's no opportunity now to
- 9:40apologize, no opportunity to reconcile.
- 9:46I mean, it's done. It's over in a very real way.
- 9:51You could say all hope was lost. You know, it's in a moment like
- 9:57this, you go, wow, Pastor, a real dramatic story.
- 9:59I mean, how where'd you get that from?
- 10:01You know, I got it from the Bible.
- 10:03We're actually given insight on the feelings and emotions of
- 10:08what were happening. And at least two men not even
- 10:11close to him, not even super close.
- 10:14They had heard from a distance. They weren't even one of the 12.
- 10:18There was these two men on their way home from Jerusalem.
- 10:21They were headed home. The crucifixion is over and
- 10:25they're going home. And we were introduced to them
- 10:29three days later. You see, they waited around.
- 10:33Maybe Jesus was right. Maybe he will rise from the
- 10:36dead. But when they concluded that it
- 10:39wasn't going to happen, they went home.
- 10:42And wouldn't you know it, Jesus is so gracious.
- 10:45He appears to them, but they don't know it's him yet.
- 10:49And he starts talking to them after the resurrection and
- 10:53listen to what they say. Jesus comes and he asks them
- 10:56what things you know, what things are you talking about?
- 10:59And they said to him the things concerning Jesus of Nazareth,
- 11:04who was a prophet, mighty in deed and word, before God and
- 11:09all the people, and how the chief priest and the rulers
- 11:13delivered him to be condemned to death and crucified him.
- 11:19But we were hoping that it was he who is going to redeem
- 11:22Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today
- 11:26is the third day since these things happened.
- 11:29Did you hear that phrase? We were hoping.
- 11:34Do you know why someone speaks of hope in the past tense?
- 11:38Because it's lost. They're in a hopeless state
- 11:43here. Everything that they placed
- 11:45their hope in is now, in their minds, gone.
- 11:49I mean, they're in such a position of disillusion that
- 11:53listen to what else they say. Yes.
- 11:56And certain women of our company who arrived at the tomb early
- 11:59astonished us. When they did not find his body.
- 12:04They came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who
- 12:08said he was alive. And certain of those who were
- 12:11with us went to the tomb, and we found it just as the women had
- 12:15said. But him they did not see.
- 12:19They are so overwhelmed with hopelessness that the message
- 12:24hey, angels told us he's alive didn't even affect them.
- 12:28You're talking to angels. Doesn't matter to me.
- 12:30We're going home. Maybe that's you today.
- 12:36Oh, for different reasons, in different circumstances.
- 12:41But you look at your life and examine your current situation,
- 12:45perhaps, and like all hope is lost.
- 12:50What did you walk in the room with today?
- 12:53What did you wake up with on your heart and on your mind?
- 12:57How did you choose to face the morning and face the day?
- 13:02I mean, look, some of you and so many of you made it into the
- 13:04House of the Lord, and for that we're grateful.
- 13:07But, you know, a lot of people didn't make it, didn't have
- 13:11enough strength to get out of the house, some not enough
- 13:14strength to get out of bed. They're watching online,
- 13:17perhaps, or listening on the radio, and they're wanting to
- 13:20come. They're they're careful, they're
- 13:23pressing in. But so many.
- 13:25It seems as if everything around us has sapped out our hope and
- 13:29our joy. Even if a But for brief moments,
- 13:34death and loss will do that to you.
- 13:36You know, even Jesus experienced deep emotion and sorrow over
- 13:43death. You remember that time when his
- 13:46friend Lazarus became sick. They called for him, said, man,
- 13:50we know if you come you can help our brother.
- 13:52His sisters, Lazarus, sisters say Mary and Martha.
- 13:56So they call for him. But as you know in John 11, what
- 13:59the Bible tells us is that Jesus delayed his coming.
- 14:03He's on his own timetable, not ours.
- 14:06He delayed his coming. But in the delay Lazarus died.
- 14:10We have a place if you're in John 11.
- 14:12Notice this exchange between Mary and Jesus.
- 14:16It says in verse 3232 of John 11.
- 14:21It says when Mary came to Jesus and saw him, she fell down at
- 14:25his feet saying, Lord, if you would have been here, can you
- 14:29feel the emotion there? If you would have just been
- 14:32here, my brother would not have died.
- 14:36Therefore when Jesus saw her weeping and the Jews who came
- 14:41with her weeping, he groaned in his spirit and was troubled.
- 14:46And he said, where have you laid him?
- 14:48And they said, Lord come and see.
- 14:51And then two of the most important words in the English
- 14:54Bible, it says that Jesus wept. He felt the full weight of
- 15:02emotion here in Bethany as he surveyed the scene.
- 15:09The question is why did Jesus, the Son of God and the King of
- 15:12Kings cry? And this is more than just
- 15:15crying, by the way, for you Bible students.
- 15:17You know, if you look up the word wept in the original
- 15:20language, you know that it has. It's a very descriptive word
- 15:23that talks about deep crying, convulsive crying, if you will.
- 15:29Some of you know what I speak the kind of crying where you run
- 15:32out of tears. Jesus is emotional here.
- 15:34God in human flesh. Why?
- 15:37Why is he so emotional? I believe he's aching at the
- 15:42consequences of death and sin. He knew that it wasn't part of
- 15:48God's original plan. He is God.
- 15:52He knows that when others are in pain, he's in pain.
- 15:59Jesus wept because his heart was broken.
- 16:02He wept because it was crushed and bruised by the pain of
- 16:09others seeing death. That's the cross.
- 16:15They took Jesus down off of the cross and they put him in a
- 16:18tomb, sealed it away, and everyone went back to their own
- 16:22lives. But three days later, Jesus
- 16:25Christ rose again from the dead. And what a privilege it is to
- 16:29share with you today that Jesus Christ is alive and the only way
- 16:34to a right relationship with God.
- 16:36Today is the day where your sins can be forgiven and your life
- 16:41can be forever changed. Jesus, the Savior of the world,
- 16:45is alive. He declares to you.
- 16:50Jesus does. He declares to you that He alone
- 16:54is the resurrection in the life. He alone is the resurrection in
- 16:59the life, He said, he who believes in Me, though he may
- 17:02die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes
- 17:06in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?
- 17:10Yes. Now, why, Pastor, do we spend so
- 17:15much time looking at a very difficult part of the life of
- 17:19Jesus? Well, there's a lot of answers
- 17:22to that. But let me just remind you, we
- 17:25all live in the real world. Every single one of us.
- 17:29We live in that span between life and death.
- 17:34I really appreciate what Pastor Ian instructed us to do, he told
- 17:38us last night. But I've been at every service,
- 17:40so I've been able to do it every service for us.
- 17:42Just to pause, put our hands on our hearts, and feel in your own
- 17:49body, your beating heart, that gift that God has given to you,
- 17:52the gift of life, just to absorb it.
- 17:57What will, What will God do through that life?
- 18:01What is his desire to come to a place of appreciation?
- 18:05We live in the real world, friends, and the real world is
- 18:12filled with sin. That's the problem in the room
- 18:17today, You know, I mean, for all of us, Every single one of us.
- 18:22The Bible couldn't be clearer. We all share in something.
- 18:25Every single one of us. We're all equal in sharing this
- 18:29one truth, and that is this. We have all sinned and fallen
- 18:33short of the glory of God, or another way of saying that,
- 18:36fallen short of the perfection of God, you know, and helping
- 18:41you understand that. I like to take it down a notch
- 18:43and say, OK, sin is a heavy word and it's an important word and
- 18:47we'll get back to it in a moment.
- 18:48But before we get back to it, let's talk about the concept for
- 18:53a second. So some people, I'm not a
- 18:55Sinner, you know, pastor. And you get that religious
- 18:57resistance, you know, the kind of resistance where you built up
- 19:00walls. Maybe you've been hurt before or
- 19:03somebody's misused the Bible in your life.
- 19:05And so you've got these walls of defense.
- 19:06And so, OK, OK, I respect that for a moment.
- 19:09Let me ask you a different question.
- 19:10If you would exclude yourself from all of us that we have
- 19:13sinned, would you include yourself If I said this?
- 19:17Everybody in this room has made a mistake, Would you say that?
- 19:21Oh, yes, pastor. I can agree with that.
- 19:23Yes. Yes, I'm full of mistakes.
- 19:25And believe me, we all know we live with you.
- 19:27You're full of mistakes. We understand that, that that's
- 19:30not up for debate. And by saying that, what we're
- 19:33admitting is that we're not perfect.
- 19:35We know that. I mean that.
- 19:37That is as clear as day that we are not living a perfect life.
- 19:43Well, in relation to one another we might use the word mistake.
- 19:47But let me add this. When you use the word mistake in
- 19:51relationship to God, the proper word is sin, because it's far
- 19:56greater than some little mistake.
- 19:59When we sin, we wound the God of the universe.
- 20:06When we sin, we place our we put ourselves in the position.
- 20:11Listen and stick with me. With this you got to understand.
- 20:15Living in unconfessed, unrepentant sin, you place
- 20:20yourself in a position of being an enemy of God.
- 20:25Actually, the Bible uses the Word at enmity with God.
- 20:31You take the position against God, and I know at this point
- 20:34you know someone will go, you know, I don't have any problem
- 20:36with God. I have no problem with religion.
- 20:38I'm a very moral person. And for that, we're grateful.
- 20:41But the truth is apart from Jesus Christ, the resurrected
- 20:45God in human flesh. Well, Jesus will put it this
- 20:50way. If you're not with me, you're
- 20:52against me. You see, Jesus Christ is death.
- 20:57He had to die for something. He was sent into this world out
- 21:01of a missionary heart of love for you and me.
- 21:06He had to die for something, and he did.
- 21:08He died for my sin and for yours, which then puts the room
- 21:14into categories. The first category we're all the
- 21:17same. Downstairs, upstairs, online, in
- 21:21in an overflow room. We're all in the same category
- 21:24when it comes to sin. But then the room is divided in
- 21:27or the building is divided in or.
- 21:29Those listening is divided into two categories in relationship
- 21:33to sin. And here they are.
- 21:35Your sins are either forgiven by the blood of Jesus Christ or
- 21:39they're not. You're either born again, a
- 21:44newness of life in Christ, because you've come to him and
- 21:46admitted you've sinned and you've accepted the risen Lord,
- 21:50and you admit that you need him and that you want his
- 21:53forgiveness, or you don't. And here's where you have to be
- 21:58very careful, because the Bible says that we've all sinned and
- 22:02fallen short of the glory of God, and sin comes with its own
- 22:08wages. You know sin pays.
- 22:10Or you can flip the you can think if you're thinking it
- 22:13along those lines, you can also think that sin in your life
- 22:16comes with a bill that's due and it will be due soon enough.
- 22:22Even as we month to month have to pay our bills.
- 22:25Well, sin has a bill to pay too. The wages of sin is death,
- 22:32physical death, even the death of an innocent man, Jesus
- 22:36Christ, dying for not his own sins but for ours.
- 22:40And you can be sure of it, Every single one of us will die of
- 22:46physical death. But you know, on the flip side
- 22:49of that, Jesus would then say, and the Bible would declare to
- 22:54us, that even though the sin comes with a bill, God comes
- 22:58with a gift. God comes to you with a gift.
- 23:04The Bible says that the gift of God is eternal life through
- 23:09Christ Jesus our Lord. And so the bridge, the bridge to
- 23:15cross from wages to gift is repentance.
- 23:21It's humbling, admitted humbly. Admitting your lost condition.
- 23:26And that's hard. Sometimes that's hard.
- 23:27It's like, no, you don't understand that I'm a very
- 23:29successful person. I'm.
- 23:31I'm very well esteemed in culture and I've done a lot for
- 23:34myself. And those are all just, you
- 23:36know, really hindrances. Because God wants to use you as
- 23:41a successful man. He wants to use you.
- 23:43He wants you be in your life even as you are.
- 23:49You got to be careful because I know there are many religions
- 23:52out there, Lots of them. Man made religions.
- 23:58You might even say, well, what's Christianity?
- 24:00A religion? Yeah, some people have made it
- 24:02that. But I'm going to tell you right
- 24:03now, when you get past Christianity and back to the
- 24:05words of Jesus, Jesus didn't come to create a religion.
- 24:09He has a very singular invitation.
- 24:11Did you know that? It's very easy.
- 24:13Jesus just says you come and follow me.
- 24:16You come follow me. You leave everything behind and
- 24:21you follow me. Jesus didn't come to create a
- 24:24religion. He came to have a relationship
- 24:30with you. It's interesting.
- 24:32It's a beautiful picture. He also came to assemble a
- 24:35bride, which is one of the most glorious beautiful days of a
- 24:41wedding. When the bride is revealed in
- 24:46all her glory with all these false teachings and false the
- 24:52all feel good theology substitute saviors.
- 24:57There's a lot of them. As you study them and maybe take
- 25:00a comparative religion class in college and you know as a trying
- 25:04to talk you out of your faith and there you are sitting and
- 25:07listening. You know what you'll find as you
- 25:09study all the world religions and man made religions that
- 25:12exist and have existed through the years.
- 25:14You know what you'll find? There's one common thread.
- 25:17All of their founders are dead. Every single one of them.
- 25:24And if they're not dead now, they will be soon enough.
- 25:28Why? The wages of sin is death.
- 25:31You go. But hey, Pastor, Jesus died too.
- 25:37I'm glad you noticed, because Jesus did die.
- 25:41He was buried, and three days later he rose again from the
- 25:45dead. This is significant.
- 25:50This is significant because it's not just a pastor and a pulpit
- 25:54here in the 21st century, close to the death of Jesus Christ,
- 25:58You know, there were hundreds, if not thousands of eyewitnesses
- 26:03after his resurrection. People that can say I saw him, I
- 26:08talked to him, I ate with him, I hung out with him.
- 26:12I followed him. The brother, he cooked for me.
- 26:15This risen Lord, what he promised, he fulfilled.
- 26:20There were so many that you could talk to by the end of the
- 26:231st century was when the Bible was finished being written.
- 26:26By the end of 1, by 100 AD, the Bible was already done written,
- 26:32but the witnesses that were there were alive.
- 26:36People were alive in the 1st century.
- 26:38They could have said that's not true.
- 26:39That's not true. That's not true.
- 26:41But they couldn't say that because the eyewitnesses were
- 26:45still alive to saying no, you don't.
- 26:47No way. We were there.
- 26:50We saw him and while he was still alive, before he ascended
- 26:54into heaven, they some of them could even say he's right there,
- 26:57Turn around. You can see him with your own
- 27:00eyes. But so fast, so quickly.
- 27:05There were those saying, you guys are making it up.
- 27:08It's not true fairy tales. I'm sure you've met a few of
- 27:12them. They're still with us 2000 years
- 27:14later. Fairy tales, not true religion,
- 27:19Christianity, I mean so much so in the 1st century that Peter,
- 27:24you remember Peter. Peter was one of those followers
- 27:27that abandoned Jesus. By the way, Peter was one of the
- 27:31men. That man, he didn't didn't just
- 27:33abandoned Jesus. He went out hard.
- 27:38He went out really hard. He was one of those guys that
- 27:41was one of an intense, you know, an intense man.
- 27:44He was all in and everything that he did.
- 27:46So when he was following Jesus, all in, when he left Jesus and
- 27:52he was all in. He was an eyewitness, by the
- 27:54way. Peter was Psalm with his own
- 27:57eyes. I mean, if we could hear the
- 27:58testimony of Peter, somebody would come to Peter and say, you
- 28:02don't believe that stuff, you're believing in fairy tales.
- 28:05I can almost hear Peter's response.
- 28:07I could almost hear Peter. He's like you don't understand.
- 28:10You. You don't understand.
- 28:11I saw him. I was with you.
- 28:15You don't know what I did. I, I, I, I I remember meeting
- 28:19him for the first time. He called me away from my
- 28:22business, and he convinced me that he was the hope.
- 28:27He convinced me that he was Messiah and I was all in.
- 28:31I mean, this is all I wanted. I left everything I I left the
- 28:33business. I left home.
- 28:35I mean, I'm with him and I'm listening to him.
- 28:38And his words, they they went beyond.
- 28:41They went right to my heart. And I love that man.
- 28:46But he told me that I was going to deny him, and I didn't
- 28:48believe him. He told me he was going to and I
- 28:52didn't believe him. I was there with all the rest of
- 28:54the rest of our followers of Jesus.
- 28:56And as all these guys will deny you, Lord, but I'll never deny
- 28:59you. But wouldn't you believe it?
- 29:03I did deny him. Not once, not twice, but exactly
- 29:11as he said, I denied him three times.
- 29:15It was hard. I felt so alone, so much shame,
- 29:19so much guilt. I didn't know what I was going
- 29:22to do with my life. I watched him from a distance,
- 29:26being the beating and the crucifixion and and I watched
- 29:30it. I watched it and I'm like, you
- 29:32going to tell me I wasn't an eyewitness.
- 29:35Jesus, he came back. I talked to him personally.
- 29:40He came to me, Peter could say he came to me.
- 29:45He came and had a conversation with me.
- 29:47And you know, Jesus, he looked at me with that look, you know,
- 29:49you know, that kind of look, that look of compassion and
- 29:52love. Peter could have said he looked
- 29:55me in the eye and he said, Peter I want you to take care of my
- 29:59sheep. I want you to tend them and care
- 30:05for them. I I want you.
- 30:07And and he did it. It's it's amazing.
- 30:10Peter could say he did it three times almost like he was making
- 30:13up for the three times I denied him each denial he was giving me
- 30:18a re enlistment. Each denial with this one feed.
- 30:22With this 110 with this one feed.
- 30:25I'm like, yes, I can do that. Don't you tell me that Jesus
- 30:30isn't alive. I spoke to him.
- 30:32He enlisted me back in the ministry.
- 30:35I'm an eyewitness, an eyewitness.
- 30:43Yeah. We don't have Peter today.
- 30:44We just have his writings. Everything I just shared with
- 30:48you is in the Bible. It's exactly what happened with
- 30:53this man. Peter would later go on to write
- 30:56two books of the Bible be used in great ways.
- 30:59Why? Because of the resurrected Lord,
- 31:03the God of the second chance and the 3rd and the 4th.
- 31:07Or for some of you, the God of the first chance, that today,
- 31:12this is the day you need to receive the Lord Jesus Christ
- 31:15into your life. Put man made religion behind
- 31:19you. Turn your back on your own
- 31:23self-sufficiency, Maybe lay your shame and your guilt before God
- 31:29today. That's what sin does.
- 31:32It just wrecks a person on the inside out.
- 31:34You just begin to live a guilty, you know, life filled with guilt
- 31:38and shame. And before you know it, you do
- 31:40so many things to try to cover it and ignore it that you don't
- 31:42even feel anymore. It it it has wrecked your
- 31:47separation. You know what sin separates.
- 31:48It just doesn't separate from God.
- 31:50It starts separating relationships too, because
- 31:54there's two two things that God said was very important.
- 31:56Jesus said these are super important in life #1 is that
- 32:00we're to love the Lord God with all our heart, soul and mind,
- 32:03and then out of that that we love our neighbors ourselves.
- 32:06Those are super important, really singularly important
- 32:10things in our lives. And I know that you don't really
- 32:16need, as you're probably been to many Easter services, you know
- 32:20you don't need another pastor to preach at you.
- 32:25Don't lie, don't steal, don't gossip.
- 32:29Don't worship false gods. You already know them to be
- 32:32true. You already know that lying
- 32:36hurts and gossip hurts, and you already know your conscience
- 32:41screams at you with what feeling you have left, telling you that
- 32:46these are wrong and today's the day that you don't need to run
- 32:50away anymore, that you come to the cross and you remember the
- 32:56empty tomb and you yield yourself to God.
- 33:01The only way to deal with your conscience is to and to see your
- 33:05sins forgiven is to come clean with Jesus and confess them to
- 33:11the Lord. True repentance is turning from
- 33:15the wrong, turning back to God. Everyone who calls on the name
- 33:21of the Lord will be saved. If you confess with your mouth
- 33:24the Lord Jesus and you believe in your heart that God raised
- 33:27him from the dead, you will be saved.
- 33:33It's the only way of salvation. You can make the alternative.
- 33:41Because you know, I know you've come to to church because you
- 33:45were promised lunch. That's all right.
- 33:49I told him to do that. That's good.
- 33:53Get your free lunch. But you can have salvation which
- 34:00is free. Oh, it comes at a high price
- 34:03from Jesus, but there's no works necessary from you just come you
- 34:09kind of endure a little Bible study in church and but but it
- 34:13but but being in the room feels good, doesn't it?
- 34:16There's no pastor. It doesn't.
- 34:18It makes me feel uneasy. Oh, you have a feeling coming
- 34:20into the room. That's good.
- 34:24You know why? You know where that feeling is
- 34:25coming from. God is working on your heart.
- 34:29Good or bad, comfortable or uncomfortable.
- 34:32Why? Why do you think we create
- 34:34something in this room or in this church to somehow
- 34:37artificially move you? It's not that way at all.
- 34:41God is moving you right now, causing you to stir in your
- 34:45chair. Or, you know, I wonder.
- 34:47And maybe I'll just wait till everybody starts praying and
- 34:49they close their eyes. Then I'll leave.
- 34:52No, we lock the doors. You ain't going nowhere like
- 34:55you're in, man. You're not going nowhere.
- 34:57You can't turn the radio or nothing like you're you're in.
- 35:02But what a great and gracious God, who would declare to you
- 35:06today how much He loves you, stir you in emotion one way or
- 35:11the other, drawing you to himself, that today might be the
- 35:17day, whether you receive the Lord for the very first time.
- 35:22Or what a grand day of recommitment that God would have
- 35:25from you. Like, like, not just the kind of
- 35:28the commitments you make over and over again, but like you
- 35:30know that you know that it's time.
- 35:32And the days in which we live, the situations that surround us.
- 35:38It is time, never too late, to surrender your life to Jesus
- 35:45Christ. Amen.
- 35:47Father, thank you for the privilege of declaring your new
- 35:49life to wonderful men and women and boys and girls.
- 35:55It is the singular hinge on which all of our lives hang the
- 36:02life, the death, and the resurrection of our Lord and
- 36:06Savior, Jesus Christ. It's a hard path to get to
- 36:10resurrection, just like it's a hard path living in this world.
- 36:15Issues of life and death, wayward children, broken
- 36:21relationships, pain and sorrow, and things that don't make
- 36:26sense, that don't seem to fit the narrative of a good God or a
- 36:34gracious creator. And there's just all these
- 36:37little, you know, like, little doctrines and teachings that
- 36:45like to rip people off in their vulnerable time.
- 36:49And I pray God that you're you would just today among us
- 36:56through the power of the gospel. It is powerful unto salvation
- 37:02that you would draw many to yourself today.
- 37:04And I would invite you right now, as I'm speaking, If you're
- 37:07here and you need and want your sins forgiven, you want to be
- 37:11born again. Just stand to your feet.
- 37:13This is the moment of decision for you.
- 37:17You recognize the reality of sin, the wages of sin, the gift
- 37:24of God, the need to turn and receive and ask if that's you
- 37:32with the simple understanding of the condition of your life,
- 37:36where you are and where God wants you.
- 37:38I invite you to receive the Lord Jesus Christ today.
- 37:42Just stand to your feet and we want to pray with you that today
- 37:44would be the day that God would just revolutionize your life.
- 37:49God bless you guys in the back and over here on the side.
- 37:52This is the day right here in the middle.
- 37:59Come to Jesus. Follow him.
- 38:04He died for you. He rose again for you.
- 38:10God bless you right here in the middle.
- 38:17Today is the day, Now is the time.
- 38:22And this is no small religious experience.
- 38:25This is the God of all creation meeting you right where you are.
- 38:31Bless you guys on the side. You guys just look around back
- 38:33in the back. You're going to have a pastor
- 38:34come up with you. So don't be uncomfortable with
- 38:37that. That's what's happening.
- 38:39We have pastors and leaders ready to come, so you know
- 38:41you're not alone, that you're standing with someone that you
- 38:46are immediately cared for and loved in this church already.
- 38:53I want to give you that opportunity.
- 38:55Is there anyone else I know downstairs?
- 38:57We don't see you in the overflow.
- 38:59Or you could be in your car listening in the parking lot.
- 39:02Or there's no parking. So maybe down the street
- 39:04somewhere or in Safeway and God's got your number.
- 39:08He loves you. He cares for you.
- 39:11This is this is the path that so many of us followed.
- 39:15This is it. I can't help but remember in my
- 39:18own mind, responding to the invitation in the church that I
- 39:21walked into, that I didn't really want to be in, but God
- 39:25wanted me there. And let me help you with the
- 39:28what? The Bible says that if you
- 39:31confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, I'm going to give you a
- 39:33chance to confess, and you can confess it to your God, and you
- 39:39can say something like this. God, I admit that I've sinned
- 39:43against you, and I ask you to forgive me of all of my sin.
- 39:49I believe that you sent Jesus Christ to live for me, to die
- 39:55for me, and I believe he rose again from the dead to save my
- 40:03soul. I repent of my sins today.
- 40:11I turn away from them and I choose to follow you, Father.
- 40:19I pray for those that would confess out loud inside,
- 40:27standing, sitting, laying in a hospital room somewhere, crying
- 40:32in a jail cell, wrestling over a broken family.
- 40:38You know, where you have grabbed the hearts of those that you
- 40:43love so much that you've pursued.
- 40:46Bless those here and far, near and far, that would call out to
- 40:51you and receive you and follow you with their lives.
- 40:55Bless them, Lord, bless them in every way.
- 40:59Bless them and protect them as they begin their journey
- 41:03following you. In Jesus name, Amen.
