Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: Let's say hello to Dustin Pedroia and thank him for
- 0:05Speaker 1: joining us here. Thanks very much, big man. That's always
- 0:09Speaker 1: like that smile. I see you and I smile. Why
- 0:12Speaker 1: the hell does that happen? Why do you make me smile?
- 0:16Speaker 2: You might be around miserable people or something. I don't know,
- 0:21Speaker 2: but it's good, good, good to be on with you guys. Yeah,
- 0:24Speaker 2: let's have some fun. Yeah.
- 0:25Speaker 3: I appreciate you coming on, Dustlin. Good to see you, man,
- 0:29Speaker 3: So thank yeah, thank you.
- 0:30Speaker 1: I guess the thing that I really that resonated with
- 0:32Speaker 1: me was your attitude, your joy, your passion. We're talking
- 0:37Speaker 1: about little league for a second here. When Schemes goes
- 0:40Speaker 1: and stops at that field, obviously those kids are like
- 0:44Speaker 1: blown away. You know, this would be like you in
- 0:46Speaker 1: two thousand and eight and two thousand and nine showing
- 0:49Speaker 1: up in Reading, Massachusetts at a little league field and
- 0:52Speaker 1: they're like, oh my god, that's him. That's a contagious
- 0:56Speaker 1: thing for those kids as an example that he set.
- 1:00Speaker 1: What's your take on what Schemes did there and what
- 1:02Speaker 1: the role of a major league player can be for
- 1:04Speaker 1: little kids.
- 1:06Speaker 4: Oh that's awesome that Paul did that. I mean, like
- 1:09Speaker 4: the game right now. You know, you want the youth
- 1:11Speaker 4: to come up and enjoy it and and kind of
- 1:15Speaker 4: have that passion throughout because it's a lot harder now
- 1:19Speaker 4: with that because kids just play. You know, they play
- 1:22Speaker 4: one hundred and fifty games a year, So you know,
- 1:25Speaker 4: I see it and I'm like, holy cow, how do
- 1:27Speaker 4: you get up for every game if you.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Play so many of them?
- 1:29Speaker 4: You know, there's fifty six games in a college season,
- 1:31Speaker 4: there's one hundred and forty four in a minor league season,
- 1:33Speaker 4: there's one hundred and sixty two in the big leagues.
- 1:35Speaker 4: And some kids are playing the schedule at you know, ten, twelve,
- 1:39Speaker 4: thirteen years old. So for me, it's like I love
- 1:44Speaker 4: the game so much and every time I played it
- 1:47Speaker 4: it was I played it like it was my last game.
- 1:49Speaker 4: So I view the kids, it's like I want them
- 1:52Speaker 4: to have that spark and a lot of kids that
- 1:54Speaker 4: I see some do and some don't because they play
- 1:56Speaker 4: too much, you know what I mean. So I want
- 2:00Speaker 4: them to keep that spark and that joy and that love.
- 2:04Speaker 4: And obviously when Paul shows up, it picks them up
- 2:07Speaker 4: and you know they feel like they played no games
- 2:09Speaker 4: that year, But.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Yes, not every day. The cy Young Award winner showing
- 2:12Speaker 2: up to your yard and a giant dude.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Six Yeah, right, like he's a giant young winner. You
- 2:20Speaker 1: know Justin. You probably know this about Pedroia, but I
- 2:22Speaker 1: mean Dustin would show up. You know, I've I've seen
- 2:26Speaker 1: clips of other Red Sox teammates, rookies who knew, like
- 2:30Speaker 1: I can't show up games at one are and I'll
- 2:32Speaker 1: get there around nine and they walk in there and
- 2:36Speaker 1: Dustin is in his uniforms, shirping at anybody he can see.
- 2:41Speaker 1: So you played with this little league enthusiasm enjoy and
- 2:45Speaker 1: I mean the times I was around you, it felt
- 2:49Speaker 1: like you did that no matter what, no matter where
- 2:51Speaker 1: you were, no matter how bad the season was going.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Where did that come from?
- 2:56Speaker 4: I mean, I love the game, obviously, you know I
- 2:59Speaker 4: loved playing it from from a young agent, So you know,
- 3:02Speaker 4: that's that's kind of where.
- 3:04Speaker 2: My mindset was.
- 3:05Speaker 4: And also too, you know if during my time when
- 3:08Speaker 4: I'm playing, you can only play for so long, so
- 3:11Speaker 4: it's like you better put everything you have into it.
- 3:14Speaker 4: You better prepare, you better do the right things to
- 3:16Speaker 4: to be able to be successful. And that's where kind
- 3:19Speaker 4: of you know, I'd get to the field early, I'd
- 3:21Speaker 4: watch video, I'd you know, if I had to work
- 3:23Speaker 4: out that day, I'd get there.
- 3:25Speaker 2: But you know, my mindset was I love being here,
- 3:28Speaker 2: so I might as well be there, you know what
- 3:30Speaker 2: I mean.
- 3:31Speaker 4: So but it's you know, like the guys I talked
- 3:35Speaker 4: to and stuff, they're like, oh, well, you're gonna get tired,
- 3:37Speaker 4: and it's like, yeah, yeah, you're gonna get tired. But
- 3:39Speaker 4: guess what, if you do it the right way, you
- 3:41Speaker 4: get to retire and you can you can rest as
- 3:43Speaker 4: long as you want, you know what I mean.
- 3:45Speaker 2: So that was kind of my mindset, you know.
- 3:48Speaker 4: And and and when I played too, it was a
- 3:50Speaker 4: little bit different mindset, you know what I mean.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Like the you know, it was more in my opinion,
- 3:56Speaker 2: it was more work over numbers, you know what I mean.
- 3:58Speaker 4: Like I was working on on myself and trying to
- 4:02Speaker 4: prepare my swing and what I'm trying to do that
- 4:04Speaker 4: day for the competition, rather than you know, always sixty
- 4:09Speaker 4: percent this stitch in this count. Like I don't care
- 4:12Speaker 4: if you throw any pitch in any count if mom.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Locked in, guess what, I'm getting a hit. I'm hitting it.
- 4:18Speaker 4: So like I was, I'm a big believer in putting
- 4:21Speaker 4: in the work, old school, you know, put your hard
- 4:24Speaker 4: hat on and get after it.
- 4:27Speaker 3: I love that, man. I want to ask you this
- 4:29Speaker 3: because I think it's just you know, we were chatting
- 4:32Speaker 3: a little bit before we came on here, but one
- 4:34Speaker 3: of the things that I was always really drawn to
- 4:36Speaker 3: about you is just your ability to kind of rise
- 4:39Speaker 3: up in the environments that you're in, which I think
- 4:42Speaker 3: is a lost art of like handling the pressure and
- 4:45Speaker 3: being able to come through. And one of the things
- 4:48Speaker 3: that I think it's lost in your fourteen your amazing
- 4:52Speaker 3: fourteen year career is and you took it on and
- 4:55Speaker 3: you were a great sport about it.
- 4:56Speaker 4: Man.
- 4:57Speaker 3: But it's like you weren't just like this gritty little ballplayer.
- 5:01Speaker 3: You were very You had a lot of tools right
- 5:04Speaker 3: and like, but you kind of embraced that, and I
- 5:06Speaker 3: think that's what made you so likable.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Man.
- 5:08Speaker 3: It didn't I feel like there wasn't a lot of
- 5:11Speaker 3: pride coming out of you in a sense of like
- 5:14Speaker 3: you were an ego guy and it was that kind
- 5:16Speaker 3: of was the motivator for you. So can you just
- 5:19Speaker 3: talk a little bit about that, man, because I feel
- 5:21Speaker 3: like it gets lost in it and you were okay
- 5:23Speaker 3: with it, but it also makes you super super likable
- 5:26Speaker 3: and the fans really like you for it. But you
- 5:29Speaker 3: were you had some really good tools, speaking from a
- 5:33Speaker 3: scouting standpoint, man.
- 5:35Speaker 4: So my mindset was funny. I appreciate that, but my
- 5:39Speaker 4: mindset changed. I was in at Arizona State my right
- 5:43Speaker 4: after my junior year, and we lost to cal State Fullertson.
- 5:47Speaker 4: We got home and I had two meetings with a
- 5:50Speaker 4: couple of scouts like I didn't talk to anybody.
- 5:53Speaker 2: I just played baseball like I didn't.
- 5:55Speaker 4: I got an agent, but I didn't know where I
- 5:58Speaker 4: was going to get drafted and whatever.
- 6:00Speaker 2: And I met with a team I'm not going to
- 6:02Speaker 2: throw him.
- 6:02Speaker 4: Under the bus or whatever. And the guy is the
- 6:05Speaker 4: best meeting probably that guy's ever had and I've ever had.
- 6:08Speaker 2: It was awesome.
- 6:09Speaker 4: And he looked at me and he said, you know, Dustin,
- 6:11Speaker 4: we have the fourth pick of the draft, and if
- 6:14Speaker 4: you were three inches taller, we'd take you with our
- 6:17Speaker 4: first pick. And they were picking four or five or
- 6:20Speaker 4: three or so, I don't even know what they were picking.
- 6:22Speaker 4: And I looked at him and I go, you would
- 6:24Speaker 4: take me with the third pick if I was that
- 6:27Speaker 4: much taller, and he goes and kinda he kind of
- 6:34Speaker 4: like stopped and he was like, oh my god, I
- 6:37Speaker 4: just said the dumbest thing in the history of life,
- 6:39Speaker 4: right like this much taller on a human being.
- 6:44Speaker 5: And he goes yeah, and I go, can I ask
- 6:47Speaker 5: you why? And he goes, well, I have bosses. And
- 6:51Speaker 5: I go, sir, I have bosses too, you know. And
- 6:54Speaker 5: I go, I'm just saying you should take me with
- 6:57Speaker 5: that pick. And he goes, I want to so bad
- 7:00Speaker 5: writing it in that we should take you.
- 7:01Speaker 4: And I go, okay, fine, Well this this person that
- 7:06Speaker 4: the people that didn't take me, they happen to be
- 7:08Speaker 4: in our the American League East, and I killed them.
- 7:11Speaker 2: I killed everybody in the American League, so you don't
- 7:13Speaker 2: know who they are.
- 7:14Speaker 4: But it was to the point I was trying to
- 7:17Speaker 4: make a point like, hey, listen, in baseball, it doesn't
- 7:20Speaker 4: matter what you look like, it doesn't matter you know
- 7:23Speaker 4: where you come from, it doesn't matter what language you speak.
- 7:26Speaker 4: It matters what you do and how you do it.
- 7:29Speaker 4: And that's that's reality. I tell my kids every day.
- 7:32Speaker 4: I go, if you look the part and continue to
- 7:36Speaker 4: practice being the part, you will end up being the part.
- 7:39Speaker 4: You know what I mean, Like, you will be the
- 7:41Speaker 4: guy if you continue to work and strive for that.
- 7:44Speaker 2: It's not about playing games, about doing the right things
- 7:47Speaker 2: day in and day out. And that's what I tried
- 7:48Speaker 2: to do. I wasn't.
- 7:49Speaker 4: I didn't show up to a baseball game trying to
- 7:51Speaker 4: get three hits every game. I chewed up to a
- 7:53Speaker 4: baseball game trying to beat the other team.
- 7:55Speaker 2: That's my job.
- 7:56Speaker 4: And if that required me to get four hits, I
- 7:58Speaker 4: got four hits. If that were wired me to go
- 8:00Speaker 4: for four and make five plays, I made five plays.
- 8:04Speaker 4: Like the game is the game. There was a guy
- 8:06Speaker 4: I talked to. This is two days ago. It's the
- 8:08Speaker 4: funniest thing I ever seen or I ever heard. The
- 8:11Speaker 4: game's been around one hundred and fifty years whatever. And
- 8:13Speaker 4: the guy goes and so I, you know, the poor
- 8:17Speaker 4: kid's playing. You know, he's eleven years old and he's
- 8:19Speaker 4: playing one hundred and sixty games and his back hurts.
- 8:21Speaker 2: So I go.
- 8:22Speaker 4: You know, as a former professional, I know when you're sixteen, seventeen,
- 8:26Speaker 4: and eighteen, it actually matters. When you're ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen,
- 8:30Speaker 4: and even fifteen, nothing matters. Play the game the right way,
- 8:34Speaker 4: get better progress. Until you get to a certain age.
- 8:37Speaker 4: The guy goes, oh, well, it's different than when you played,
- 8:40Speaker 4: and I go, the only thing that's different than when
- 8:43Speaker 4: I played is the dumbasses that are raising these kids.
- 8:48Speaker 4: And you're the guy. You're the reason why your kid
- 8:51Speaker 4: will not make it. He won't make it because you're
- 8:54Speaker 4: going to overplay your kid. He's gonna get hurt. He's
- 8:57Speaker 4: practicing the wrong things. He cares about results, he's not
- 9:01Speaker 4: doing the day to day grind. He's not the guy
- 9:05Speaker 4: like it is what it is. Everybody that I have
- 9:08Speaker 4: ever played with, there's one common denomenator. Mentally they're different
- 9:14Speaker 4: and physically they do the right things to prepare to
- 9:17Speaker 4: play a baseball game.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Those are the guys that make it.
- 9:20Speaker 4: It doesn't matter if you're a five tool player, you
- 9:22Speaker 4: can have one tool.
- 9:23Speaker 2: I play with Kevin Cash, and I love Kevin Cash
- 9:25Speaker 2: to the day I die. He was the worst hitter
- 9:28Speaker 2: I've ever seen in my life.
- 9:30Speaker 4: He could he could not play pepper and he would
- 9:33Speaker 4: laugh if he saw this. And guess what Kevin Cash did.
- 9:36Speaker 4: He played ten years in the big leagues. He could
- 9:38Speaker 4: catch and throw. He was the best teammate maybe in
- 9:41Speaker 4: the history of life. And he was a winning baseball
- 9:44Speaker 4: player because he prepared the right way, and like this
- 9:47Speaker 4: is it is what it is. And so I you know,
- 9:51Speaker 4: it's funny. I try to I try to tell parents.
- 9:53Speaker 4: I try to tell the kids, but they they fall
- 9:57Speaker 4: in that hamster will man that you nderstand what I'm saying.
- 10:00Speaker 2: They get on.
- 10:02Speaker 1: We deal with it all the time. That's why, that's
- 10:04Speaker 1: why that answer was as good as any answer we've
- 10:06Speaker 1: ever heard, we've ever had. And I'll tell you this, Pedroya,
- 10:09Speaker 1: you just gave an answer longer than Roger Clemens's answers,
- 10:13Speaker 1: which I didn't think was even possible, Like there was
- 10:16Speaker 1: no way anybody could do that. And you just you
- 10:19Speaker 1: blew right through that stop sign. I'm using about you.
- 10:24Speaker 2: I'm usingly not a talker, you know what I mean.
- 10:25Speaker 2: I'm using a So.
- 10:27Speaker 3: Yeah, man, we're giving you the plan for we have
- 10:31Speaker 3: you on.
- 10:31Speaker 2: I appreciate it.
- 10:32Speaker 4: No, well, I'm passionate because I have kids going through it,
- 10:37Speaker 4: you know what I mean.
- 10:37Speaker 2: I have I have a thirteen year old.
- 10:39Speaker 4: He's good, he's he's a really good middle infielder and
- 10:41Speaker 4: he's one hundred and ten pounds and he's got a
- 10:44Speaker 4: great swing, Like he's going to be really good, right,
- 10:46Speaker 4: But everybody wants results, and I'm like, cool, Go have
- 10:50Speaker 4: a good a bat, Go swing at the right pitches,
- 10:53Speaker 4: Go do the right things.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Hey, when we base run, we base run with a passion.
- 10:57Speaker 2: We we we.
- 10:58Speaker 4: Are secondary is great. We're one step ahead of the game.
- 11:01Speaker 4: I go, don't worry, physicality will come. I played in
- 11:03Speaker 4: the big leagues at one hundred and sixty three pounds,
- 11:06Speaker 4: and I was the year I won the MVP.
- 11:08Speaker 2: I was one hundred and sixty eight pounds.
- 11:10Speaker 4: I go, I don't want to hear anything about size
- 11:12Speaker 4: from nobody, from nobody like I was probably the lightest
- 11:15Speaker 4: MVP in the history of baseball, al two fifteen pounds
- 11:19Speaker 4: heavier than me.

- 12:23Speaker 1: the the birth of the chip on the shoulders, so
- 12:27Speaker 1: to speak, or the attitude went So when did that?
- 12:29Speaker 2: When?
- 12:30Speaker 1: When would that happen? Like when you were born? When
- 12:32Speaker 1: did that come from?
- 12:34Speaker 4: So? I was the little kid, obviously, and I was trying.
- 12:37Speaker 4: I was always trying to get respect from everybody. Baseball
- 12:41Speaker 4: didn't matter, right. You know, if I went to a
- 12:43Speaker 4: basketball game and I showed up or you know, a
- 12:45Speaker 4: pickup game.
- 12:47Speaker 2: They'd look at me and be like, ah, we'll take
- 12:49Speaker 2: the little guy. But like on accident, you know what
- 12:51Speaker 2: I mean, So kiss me off. I'm like taking me last.
- 12:56Speaker 1: I can relate to that. Yeah, I get.
- 13:00Speaker 4: I'm like, hey, take me a win, like I I.
- 13:04Speaker 2: I'm in this. I'm in the business of winning. Everybody's like, oh,
- 13:07Speaker 2: I'm gonna go.
- 13:07Speaker 4: To a hitting coach and do this. No, I'm in
- 13:10Speaker 4: the business of winning games. I don't give a rats
- 13:13Speaker 4: you know what about mechanics.
- 13:16Speaker 2: This, that, whatever, I'm in the business of.
- 13:18Speaker 4: If we're playing a nine inning baseball game, one guys
- 13:22Speaker 4: is going to help your team win, I'm gonna be
- 13:25Speaker 4: that guy and I and I showed up to do
- 13:28Speaker 4: that every day.
- 13:29Speaker 2: And that's what it takes to be a good player.
- 13:32Speaker 4: It doesn't matter your size, it doesn't matter what position
- 13:34Speaker 4: you play, it doesn't matter how hard you throw, it
- 13:36Speaker 4: doesn't nothing matters if your mindset is, hey, I got
- 13:40Speaker 4: a nine inning baseball game to play, and I'm here
- 13:42Speaker 4: to beat your you know what you're different.
- 13:45Speaker 2: That's the major leagues. That's the difference.
- 13:49Speaker 3: That's the difference when you when you were when you
- 13:51Speaker 3: were in your big league career, was that something that
- 13:55Speaker 3: motivated you though? Was that something that was like you
- 13:57Speaker 3: kind of always thought about or did you just put
- 14:00Speaker 3: that behind you and just go play?
- 14:02Speaker 2: No?
- 14:03Speaker 4: I just put them I mean play. I mean once
- 14:04Speaker 4: you get drafted, you're in. Yeah, you know what I mean,
- 14:06Speaker 4: Like you're in the fight. And and it's you know,
- 14:09Speaker 4: obviously the minor leagues are a grind.
- 14:11Speaker 2: You know, you've got to perform, you have to have results.
- 14:15Speaker 2: But the way to.
- 14:16Speaker 4: Get results is they're doing the right things day in
- 14:18Speaker 4: and day out. People don't realize that. Like everyone's like, oh,
- 14:21Speaker 4: I'm going to go I'm going to hit three ten
- 14:24Speaker 4: this year. It's like, okay, well how do you do that?
- 14:28Speaker 4: What are the steps? Do you know what the steps are?
- 14:30Speaker 4: If you don't know what the steps are, you better
- 14:31Speaker 4: ask some questions to somebody and hopefully that person knows
- 14:34Speaker 4: what the hell they're talking about, you know what I mean.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Now it's not even I'm going to hit three tendh
- 14:38Speaker 1: and now it's uh, I just need I need exit velocity.
- 14:41Speaker 1: I need. I need a good barrel percentage, and I
- 14:44Speaker 1: don't want to get don't I don't want to get
- 14:45Speaker 1: your started on that. We'll we'll get to that. No,
- 14:47Speaker 1: we do have questions here from from our you know,
- 14:50Speaker 1: from our team, So let's get to those, because that's
- 14:53Speaker 1: what this whole platform is all about. First question has
- 14:56Speaker 1: to do with your kind of experiences as you were
- 14:59Speaker 1: growing up, and it refers to people who play nor
- 15:04Speaker 1: Cal baseball, this particular teammate of ours, what your travel
- 15:07Speaker 1: ball experience was like back in the day.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Okay, so let me read this. Boom boom, boom boom
- 15:13Speaker 2: got you Okay, So this is my story, guys.
- 15:17Speaker 4: I played twenty Little league baseball games from age eight
- 15:21Speaker 4: to twelve, twenty baseball games from when little league started, Okay, and.
- 15:27Speaker 2: When I got done in Woodland, California.
- 15:29Speaker 4: I stopped baseball, and then I went straight into basketball.
- 15:34Speaker 4: And then right after the twenty games of basketball, I
- 15:37Speaker 4: went straight into flag football at that age, and then
- 15:41Speaker 4: right after that it was a shortened season, I went
- 15:43Speaker 4: straight into tennis. And then I wrapped it back around
- 15:46Speaker 4: and played baseball, basketball, football, tennis.
- 15:48Speaker 2: And that's what I did from.
- 15:50Speaker 4: Ages eight to twelve, So I played that's four years
- 15:55Speaker 4: times twenty. I played, wow, eighty baseball games. Eighty baseball
- 16:01Speaker 4: games until my thirteen year old baseball season.
- 16:05Speaker 2: Okay, I was an athlete. I was. I was.
- 16:11Speaker 4: Like lean, I could, I could, good footwork. Whatever, I
- 16:15Speaker 4: wasn't overplayed. I was really good at baseball. I was
- 16:20Speaker 4: pretty good at basketball. I was a point guard, and
- 16:23Speaker 4: I was okay at football. I was really good at tennis.
- 16:27Speaker 4: Sool those other sports trained my mind on how to
- 16:30Speaker 4: be a good teammate. Like I'm not getting twenty shots
- 16:34Speaker 4: up in basketball, I'm moving the ball around. I'm setting
- 16:37Speaker 4: guys up. My attitude was good in football. I played
- 16:41Speaker 4: quarterback in safety. I had to do little things too.
- 16:44Speaker 4: I was a well rounded athlete, which in today's society
- 16:48Speaker 4: is is hard to come across. And that's what scouts,
- 16:51Speaker 4: that's what college coaches want. So the hard part about
- 16:55Speaker 4: society is is everyone goes, oh, you got to play
- 16:59Speaker 4: year round, you got to you got to be specialized
- 17:01Speaker 4: at age ten. Yeah, no one wants that. And if
- 17:04Speaker 4: you do want that, the coach is an idiot and
- 17:07Speaker 4: their team stinks. These are facts, guys. I'm only gonna
- 17:10Speaker 4: say facts.
- 17:12Speaker 1: You're a parent now, Dustin, So you encourage your kids
- 17:14Speaker 1: to play and any kid that they're friends with, you
- 17:16Speaker 1: play multiple sports. You still do that.
- 17:19Speaker 2: Yeah, my oldest son now is a junior in high school.
- 17:23Speaker 4: He plays basketball only he's six foot three, he's at
- 17:27Speaker 4: But now, at fifteen, we got to pick a sport, right,
- 17:31Speaker 4: you got to pick one. But from ages eight to fifteen,
- 17:35Speaker 4: are you out of your mind? Like, no, go play sports,
- 17:38Speaker 4: Go be a kid, Go social skills, learn how to
- 17:42Speaker 4: be a teammate, learn how to be an athlete, learn
- 17:44Speaker 4: how to fail. Parents are terrified of their son failing. No, guys, no,
- 17:49Speaker 4: we need to fail. Failure is what makes you a
- 17:53Speaker 4: good person. Listen, there's been twenty three thousand major leaguers
- 17:57Speaker 4: in the world.
- 17:59Speaker 2: If you're planning on your kid being a major leaguer.
- 18:01Speaker 4: Let's not do that. Let's not do that. Let's plan
- 18:04Speaker 4: on your son changing the world in some way. It
- 18:07Speaker 4: could be baseball, it could be football, it could be
- 18:10Speaker 4: you're a CEO of whatever. You could be Carl Ravich,
- 18:15Speaker 4: you could be something in media, you could be something great.
- 18:19Speaker 4: But sports make you that way. And it's not one sport, guys,
- 18:22Speaker 4: It's all sports. You got to meet everybody from every
- 18:24Speaker 4: different background. You got to meet them all. That's what
- 18:27Speaker 4: changed me. That's what made me who I am. If
- 18:30Speaker 4: I didn't play basketball, and if I didn't play football,
- 18:33Speaker 4: there's no chance how to play baseball, zero chance.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Guys like I had to go through. I had to
- 18:39Speaker 2: go through the grind.
- 18:40Speaker 4: I had to guard a kid that was six foot
- 18:43Speaker 4: and be like, this guy's bigger, faster, stronger, he's better,
- 18:47Speaker 4: he's he's talking trash to me. He's beaten my you
- 18:50Speaker 4: know what. And I had to find a way to
- 18:52Speaker 4: guard him. If I didn't do that, you think I'm
- 18:54Speaker 4: going to play defense on a mo for four in
- 18:56Speaker 4: a baseball game, right?
- 18:58Speaker 2: No answer is no, no, But I'm like, you know what, I.
- 19:03Speaker 3: Go Well, yeah, he love it.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Man.
- 19:07Speaker 3: Let's go to the next question from Mark here says
- 19:11Speaker 3: this is awesome. Thank you. Your teammates described you as
- 19:13Speaker 3: a non NonStop in the clubhouse, joking, keeping the energy high.
- 19:16Speaker 3: Walk us through why it's so important to keep the team.
- 19:19Speaker 4: Loose, because you play better, you know what I mean?
- 19:24Speaker 4: Like you you when when you're not thinking about the
- 19:27Speaker 4: things that don't matter, you play better, you know what
- 19:30Speaker 4: I mean? And in every environment. It could be hell,
- 19:33Speaker 4: it could be thirteen baseball. You know your your your
- 19:35Speaker 4: dad or your mom are like, oh, why'd you go
- 19:37Speaker 4: one for four today?
- 19:40Speaker 2: Well, because I didn't. I got a hit in one
- 19:41Speaker 2: out of four at bats. You know what I mean.
- 19:43Speaker 4: You need that teammate that's going to go up to
- 19:45Speaker 4: you and be like, you know, joke around, keep it
- 19:47Speaker 4: light so he doesn't think about your dad saying you
- 19:50Speaker 4: went one for four. Same thing in the big leagues.
- 19:53Speaker 4: You know, it could be media, it could be pressure,
- 19:55Speaker 4: it could be you know, you're.
- 19:57Speaker 2: Dealing with money, this is your job.
- 19:59Speaker 4: But if you're relaxed and you and you know your
- 20:01Speaker 4: teammates have your back, you're different, you know what I mean?
- 20:04Speaker 4: And yeah, and I and I hope all the guys
- 20:07Speaker 4: that I played with felt that way.
- 20:08Speaker 2: You know what I mean. I would make a joke.
- 20:10Speaker 4: I went over nine in a big league game one time,
- 20:12Speaker 4: over nine with no strikeouts in phil League in two
- 20:16Speaker 4: thousand and I don't even know nine in an eighteen
- 20:18Speaker 4: inning game. Went over nine, and guests who made a
- 20:21Speaker 4: joke about myself me?
- 20:23Speaker 2: Yep, Like, guys, it is what it is.
- 20:24Speaker 4: You play enough games, you're gonna do it, yeah, you know,
- 20:28Speaker 4: but it only meant you were.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Doing the next four.
- 20:30Speaker 2: It just meant you were doing before the next day,
- 20:33Speaker 2: the next game. Yeah.
- 20:35Speaker 1: So you know, I think part of the answer to
- 20:37Speaker 1: that question just being around you that I grew up
- 20:39Speaker 1: in New England, obviously being around two people that were
- 20:42Speaker 1: the ultimate trash talkers who backed it up. One was
- 20:45Speaker 1: Larry Bird who trash talk everybody, and you do the same.
- 20:49Speaker 1: And there are some legendary justin Pedroia trash talks. Whether
- 20:54Speaker 1: it was with Francona Farrell, uh, the the guy that
- 20:58Speaker 1: let you into course field in Colorado after he took
- 21:01Speaker 1: Jeff Francis jeep. You tell us just what maybe people
- 21:07Speaker 1: refer to as the most famous Pedroia chirp.
- 21:12Speaker 4: I think my best one of all time. And Joe
- 21:14Speaker 4: Mauer would say this probably We're at the Metrodome, you know,
- 21:19Speaker 4: the old place, and I fouled off facing Booth bondser
- 21:23Speaker 4: but I faced him in the minor leagues, remember Booth. Oh,
- 21:28Speaker 4: I held off like I filed off like nine straight pitches,
- 21:32Speaker 4: and Joe's back there, and like I would always take
- 21:35Speaker 4: a deep breath, get in there, and Joe goes well,
- 21:37Speaker 4: dust and Joe's the nicest guy ever, like in the
- 21:40Speaker 4: history of life. He goes, well, Dustin, I don't know
- 21:44Speaker 4: what to throw you, I go, don't worry about it.
- 21:45Speaker 2: Joe neither does the rest of the f in league,
- 21:48Speaker 2: you know what I mean.
- 21:49Speaker 4: And when I said it, I was like, but I
- 21:52Speaker 4: was so locked into the bat.
- 21:53Speaker 2: I didn't mean that's what I was thinking.
- 21:56Speaker 4: And when I said it, Joe just kind of like
- 22:00Speaker 4: he started laughing, you know what I mean, like, what
- 22:02Speaker 4: the hell's wrong with this little guy? And then sure enough,
- 22:05Speaker 4: Booth threw me a curveball I like slapped a little
- 22:07Speaker 4: single up the middle, and I remember rounding first. I
- 22:10Speaker 4: was looking back at him too. He didn't even give
- 22:11Speaker 4: me a response. But that's probably my best opponent player,
- 22:16Speaker 4: you know what I mean.
- 22:17Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I would.
- 22:19Speaker 1: There's a billion.
- 22:20Speaker 2: Talk more trash with my guys. Yeah, like I would.
- 22:23Speaker 2: I would.
- 22:24Speaker 7: You know.
- 22:24Speaker 4: I never wanted to give Pictures any credit because then
- 22:26Speaker 4: your teammate, if I can't hit them, you think you
- 22:28Speaker 4: think anybody else is. I'm pretty good, So I never
- 22:32Speaker 4: gave Pictures credit.
- 22:33Speaker 2: So I'd come in. I talked trash about every picture.
- 22:35Speaker 4: I'm I apologize since I'm retired, but I buried you
- 22:38Speaker 4: guys when.
- 22:39Speaker 2: I played nothing.
- 22:41Speaker 1: He's got nothing.
- 22:42Speaker 2: He stinks. He stinks. This guy stinks.
- 22:45Speaker 4: I said that probably a billion times in my life.
- 22:47Speaker 2: Hey, hey, what's he got? This guy stinks. If we
- 22:50Speaker 2: don't score ten, we stink. It's awesome. Yeah, so good,
- 22:55Speaker 2: that's good man.
- 22:56Speaker 3: So speaking of that, who would be the guy that,
- 22:59Speaker 3: uh you didn't like facing man? Who is the guy
- 23:02Speaker 3: that you were like?
- 23:02Speaker 2: Then? This is god? So it's funny. Who's your guy?
- 23:06Speaker 2: I went it? So my guy?
- 23:07Speaker 4: You ready for my guy? I went in to talk
- 23:11Speaker 4: Tory Lavella wanted me to talk to the Diamondbacks. This
- 23:13Speaker 4: is like three years ago. So I was like, oh,
- 23:16Speaker 4: you know, me and Tory are tied. He was our
- 23:17Speaker 4: bench coach with the Red Sox.
- 23:19Speaker 2: I love him. I was like, all right, I go
- 23:21Speaker 2: in and talk.
- 23:21Speaker 4: So before I go into their coaches room and Dan
- 23:25Speaker 4: Herron's sitting there and I and I I was I
- 23:30Speaker 4: was over twenty eight killed you. So I see him.
- 23:34Speaker 4: I see him in there and like I'm shaking everybody's hand. Hey,
- 23:37Speaker 4: good to see. And I see Dan and I'm like
- 23:39Speaker 4: I wanted to you know me, I'm mad I didn't
- 23:42Speaker 4: get a hit off him. So I look at him
- 23:44Speaker 4: and he goes, Dustin, great to see you.
- 23:46Speaker 2: I go, you know what f you dan like? It's
- 23:48Speaker 2: a famious show. I go. He goes, what do you
- 23:50Speaker 2: mad at me for? I go, I'm over for twenty
- 23:52Speaker 2: eight against you. I want a piece of you.
- 23:53Speaker 4: I wanted to bring him out in the field right
- 23:55Speaker 4: now and try to get it hit because he owned me.
- 23:58Speaker 2: He was my guy.
- 23:59Speaker 4: I couldn't get it it. I had no chance. I
- 24:01Speaker 4: hit a ground ball to short every time, and he
- 24:04Speaker 4: was my guy.
- 24:05Speaker 3: They said, Dustin, did you just not see him? Did
- 24:09Speaker 3: you just not see him well? Or what what makes
- 24:11Speaker 3: sweird dings?
- 24:13Speaker 4: My my bat my bat path and what he did?
- 24:17Speaker 4: It didn't play like I would beat everything into the ground.
- 24:20Speaker 4: I never struck out. I just couldn't square him up.
- 24:23Speaker 2: So it was frust Yeah, no, I saw it, saw
- 24:26Speaker 2: grain and it was.
- 24:28Speaker 4: It was the most frustrating, oh for four And it
- 24:31Speaker 4: was every time like I almost got to a point.
- 24:34Speaker 4: And I never faced him after this. But after I
- 24:37Speaker 4: went over four, I hit. I hit three grounders to
- 24:39Speaker 4: short and one to third, and I came in and
- 24:42Speaker 4: I looked at John Farrell as our manager. And I
- 24:44Speaker 4: almost looked at John and said, hey, next time this
- 24:46Speaker 4: dude pitches, I need a day like I got.
- 24:50Speaker 2: Like it doesn't play.
- 24:53Speaker 4: We're trying to win that day, and I'm humble enough
- 24:56Speaker 4: to go, Hey, my job's to sit here.
- 24:58Speaker 2: I don't need to be in here, you know what
- 24:59Speaker 2: I mean?
- 25:00Speaker 1: Justin, he shows up at Arizona State and walks in
- 25:04Speaker 1: and says, I'm the new shortstop here. Ian Kinsler's on
- 25:07Speaker 1: the team. He transfers out, he's facing Jared Weaver in
- 25:11Speaker 1: a game. Put up our next question. As I'm telling
- 25:13Speaker 1: this story, He's facing Jared Weaver in a game, and
- 25:15Speaker 1: Weaver is Weaver is one of the best players, a
- 25:18Speaker 1: Golden Spikes winner, and after falling balls off and hitting
- 25:21Speaker 1: the ball up the middle, he screams at him and says,
- 25:24Speaker 1: we'll be here all day. We are here all day.
- 25:27Speaker 1: He is crazy. Here's a question, and sometimes chatter about
- 25:31Speaker 1: physical stature as it pertains to projecting and scouting players.
- 25:35Speaker 1: This is right in Justin's wheelhouse too. So how do
- 25:38Speaker 1: you how did you handle that? You kind of told
- 25:40Speaker 1: that story, uh, preconceived notions based on size. You told
- 25:44Speaker 1: the story, Justin, Maybe you and Dustin have a little
- 25:46Speaker 1: conversation about this whole thing.
- 25:49Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I think I think it goes back
- 25:50Speaker 3: to the conversation we're having Dawson, where it's where it
- 25:53Speaker 3: can I think there can be too much focus on
- 25:56Speaker 3: some things like that. Right, it's not just about it,
- 26:00Speaker 3: It's not just about your size. It's about the tools.
- 26:02Speaker 3: And that's why I brought it up earlier, because if
- 26:04Speaker 3: you're just grading out your tools, you were actually very toolsy.
- 26:07Speaker 3: It wasn't like you just kind of gut it out,
- 26:10Speaker 3: you know, a fourteen year career. I mean so, yeah,
- 26:13Speaker 3: I mean, why don't you touch on that again? Man,
- 26:15Speaker 3: I mean just kind of how that stature played in
- 26:18Speaker 3: some of that.
- 26:19Speaker 4: Yeah, And I think that part's hard for scouts because
- 26:23Speaker 4: if you watch me play you know, two, three, four games,
- 26:27Speaker 4: you're like, oh, he's a good player. But then you
- 26:29Speaker 4: watch me play twenty in a row, You're like, oh
- 26:32Speaker 4: my god, this guy's beating us in different ways. And
- 26:36Speaker 4: I think in the scouting department, I think a lot
- 26:38Speaker 4: of guys have changed it, not just me, you know,
- 26:40Speaker 4: Jose Altuve did, and there was a lot of undersized
- 26:43Speaker 4: guy I mean, hell, the first pick of the draft
- 26:45Speaker 4: couple of years ago, the kid for Cleveland.
- 26:49Speaker 2: I mean he's what five to nine?
- 26:51Speaker 4: Yeah, So I think in scouting now, the difference is
- 26:58Speaker 4: the guys who grind in that department they find him,
- 27:01Speaker 4: you know what I mean. Like like the guy the scout,
- 27:04Speaker 4: Dan Mattson was the scout that watched me.
- 27:07Speaker 2: He he even told me. He goes dust and I
- 27:09Speaker 2: watched you play one hundred times.
- 27:11Speaker 4: He goes the first ten games, I'm like, oh, he's
- 27:12Speaker 4: a he's a nice guy, a nice player. He you know,
- 27:15Speaker 4: he's an organizational guy. And he goes by game fifteen
- 27:19Speaker 4: he goes, what do we got here? And then by
- 27:22Speaker 4: game twenty he goes, oh my god, he's good. And
- 27:25Speaker 4: then by game thirty he goes, oh my god, this
- 27:27Speaker 4: guy might be an All star. And you have to
- 27:30Speaker 4: have some serious kind of stones to say that, you
- 27:33Speaker 4: really do, because you're.
- 27:35Speaker 2: Going outside the norm.
- 27:36Speaker 4: You're not the six to you know, two hundred and
- 27:38Speaker 4: ten pound look in the part body, the whole, make
- 27:42Speaker 4: the BP swing the I mean, you watch my batting practice,
- 27:46Speaker 4: you would think something's wrong with me, you know what
- 27:48Speaker 4: I mean. Like I'm hitting ground balls in the three
- 27:50Speaker 4: four hole, I'm hitting line drives to right, the last
- 27:53Speaker 4: round on back, spinning some balls in the gap, and
- 27:55Speaker 4: then the game comes.
- 27:56Speaker 2: You're like, oh, how do you do today? Oh?
- 27:57Speaker 4: He went three for four with two runs scored and
- 27:59Speaker 4: a couple be honest, So you the guys that grind
- 28:02Speaker 4: find the right guys and guess what they will they're
- 28:05Speaker 4: not good?
- 28:08Speaker 3: Yeah, right, Revo, you can get to the question or
- 28:11Speaker 3: a second. I just want to follow up on this.
- 28:13Speaker 3: One of my theories in scouting across baseball is people
- 28:19Speaker 3: won't lose their job with when they fail on the
- 28:22Speaker 3: guy that everybody's dreaming on. Right, they and so it's easy.
- 28:27Speaker 3: I've been in conversations. I've had conversations without their scouts
- 28:30Speaker 3: and uh even executives. Like I'm telling you there there
- 28:35Speaker 3: are confident people within those departments, and then there are
- 28:38Speaker 3: people that are really just not wanting to take a
- 28:40Speaker 3: risk because they don't want to lose their job over
- 28:43Speaker 3: someone like you as an example. They would rather take
- 28:46Speaker 3: the six to two guide non performer. But maybe the
- 28:49Speaker 3: tools uptick just to tick to them. It's like, well
- 28:52Speaker 3: we missed on them, but who would have thought that, right,
- 28:54Speaker 3: It's just a I've seen that a lot too and
- 28:56Speaker 3: I mean, I guess as we finished that point up,
- 28:58Speaker 3: let's get to the next question. Revi, go ahead, buddy.
- 29:01Speaker 1: Next question has to do with injuries, which you see
- 29:03Speaker 1: all the time. In fact, heck you you suffered a
- 29:05Speaker 1: terrible injury. But the emotional side of youth sports, you
- 29:08Speaker 1: have a piece of encouragement for somebody that might get
- 29:11Speaker 1: hurt when they are young, to help them get back
- 29:14Speaker 1: on the field and feel better.
- 29:17Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, it depends on what the injury is.
- 29:19Speaker 2: Obviously.
- 29:22Speaker 4: I mean I'm gonna be frankly honest, because you know me,
- 29:25Speaker 4: if you have an arm injury, it's your parents fault.
- 29:27Speaker 4: It ain't the coaches. You're playing too much, stop playing
- 29:30Speaker 4: too much? Like stop say Dustin Pedroia said, I'm playing
- 29:35Speaker 4: too much, and you saved your kid's arm. Like, I'm
- 29:38Speaker 4: to the point now, because here's the thing, guys, I
- 29:41Speaker 4: love baseball to the day I die, and and I'm
- 29:45Speaker 4: afraid if the way the game is now with youth
- 29:48Speaker 4: youth baseball, we will never see a kid play fifteen
- 29:52Speaker 4: years in the big leagues.
- 29:53Speaker 2: We won't see it. We want like I'm want too though.
- 29:59Speaker 4: It's it's a forty or what is it? A forty
- 30:02Speaker 4: billion dollar industry. I get it, guys, I love it.
- 30:04Speaker 4: Nobody cares how you did in your tournament. No one
- 30:07Speaker 4: cares your perfect game. Stats do not matter. No one cares.
- 30:11Speaker 4: Do what's right for your kid. If he gets hurt,
- 30:14Speaker 4: take time off. If your coach is forcing your kid
- 30:17Speaker 4: to throw one hundred and sixty pitches every weekend, you're
- 30:20Speaker 4: on the wrong team. Do you hear me when I
- 30:23Speaker 4: say that, find another team. Do the right things by
- 30:26Speaker 4: each kid. Now, each kid develops physically differently than other kids.
- 30:32Speaker 4: So to where pitch counts is, if you have a
- 30:35Speaker 4: man at twelve years old, he can throw seventy five
- 30:38Speaker 4: eighty pitches because he's a man. If you have a
- 30:40Speaker 4: kid that weighs seventy nine pounds and he's a really
- 30:43Speaker 4: good pitcher and he knows how to pitch, he still
- 30:46Speaker 4: needs to throw fifty five pitches. Like and if you're
- 30:49Speaker 4: the parent of the seventy nine pound kid, go up
- 30:52Speaker 4: to the coach and say, Dustin Pedroia said, you're a moron.
- 30:56Speaker 4: Get him out of the game at fifty five pitches.
- 31:01Speaker 4: This is crucial for your child's well being. Like that.
- 31:04Speaker 4: That's where I'm at with this. I've been through guys,
- 31:06Speaker 4: I've been through it. I coach you a baseball for
- 31:09Speaker 4: six years.
- 31:09Speaker 2: I did it.
- 31:10Speaker 4: Yeah, and you got to do what's right for every
- 31:12Speaker 4: kid to set them up for success when they get
- 31:15Speaker 4: sixteen years old.
- 31:16Speaker 1: You had a great coach. You had a great coach
- 31:18Speaker 1: in Murfitt, Arizona State. There's a lot of really good coaches.
- 31:21Speaker 1: In fact, Jim Schlosnegel told us a couple of great
- 31:24Speaker 1: stories about you. He came after you to try to
- 31:26Speaker 1: get you to go to Tulane. Apparently that didn't work out.
- 31:28Speaker 1: But what traits make an elite coach in college is
- 31:31Speaker 1: specifically an infield coach.
- 31:34Speaker 4: By the way, he was my favorite, home, visit everything,
- 31:38Speaker 4: my favorite.
- 31:39Speaker 3: He was.
- 31:40Speaker 4: Yeah, it's hard to take a kid out at Woodland,
- 31:43Speaker 4: California and go to New Orleans and that was my thing.
- 31:47Speaker 4: But he was my favorite. We're still we still communicate
- 31:50Speaker 4: to today like he was great.
- 31:52Speaker 2: What makes an elite coach?
- 31:54Speaker 4: I think an elite coach does whatever is best to
- 31:57Speaker 4: make that kid better each day day. Every kid is different.
- 32:02Speaker 4: If you're a coach, you've got to be a chameleon man.
- 32:04Speaker 4: Every personality is different. Every every body is different. Every
- 32:09Speaker 4: skill sets different. You have to try to find a
- 32:12Speaker 4: way to reach them and make them better every day.
- 32:15Speaker 2: That's what makes a good coach.
- 32:16Speaker 4: Answer and and and and I don't And here's the thing.
- 32:21Speaker 4: They everybody in youth sports and even you know whatever,
- 32:25Speaker 4: it's a it's a money pit, right like, they want
- 32:28Speaker 4: to make money off whatever, you know, charging for lessons,
- 32:30Speaker 4: doing this, doing that, make the kid better? What are
- 32:33Speaker 4: we going to do today to make this kid better?
- 32:36Speaker 4: And you got if you have eleven or.
- 32:38Speaker 2: Twelve kids on the team, guess what you got to
- 32:39Speaker 2: have eleven or twelve personalities as a coach?
- 32:42Speaker 1: Yeah, justin, you get to the next question. But Dustin,
- 32:45Speaker 1: as we do that. We had Dusty Baker on. I
- 32:47Speaker 1: thought one of the lines that he shared with us,
- 32:49Speaker 1: which I thought was great, was he said, the best
- 32:51Speaker 1: thing the player can do for the coach is tell
- 32:53Speaker 1: me the truth every single day. Don't ever lie to me,
- 32:56Speaker 1: and that will keep you on the field and it
- 32:58Speaker 1: will help our reallyationship. So we get it from the
- 33:01Speaker 1: coach's side, we get it from the players. Set go ahead, Justin, Yeah.
- 33:04Speaker 3: Yeah, awesome stuff. So DQ twenty three Laser Show. My
- 33:07Speaker 3: question is, how do you handle How did you handle
- 33:10Speaker 3: your career the way it did mentally? So obviously that
- 33:13Speaker 3: was a tough time for you. A lot going on there.
- 33:15Speaker 3: But what helped you transition to life after baseball when
- 33:18Speaker 3: you had the game taking away? A great question.
- 33:22Speaker 4: Yeah, thank you for that question. That's the hardest part
- 33:25Speaker 4: for me. You know, every day I wake up and
- 33:28Speaker 4: I think about it, you know what I mean. I shoot,
- 33:31Speaker 4: when I got slid into I was leading the league
- 33:34Speaker 4: and hitting at thirty three years old. I was I
- 33:37Speaker 4: was figuring out how to play when I got older.
- 33:40Speaker 4: And that's what I'm most upset about, is like everyone
- 33:43Speaker 4: didn't get to see you know how they.
- 33:45Speaker 2: Say, oh, age thirty four to thirty eight, you're going
- 33:47Speaker 2: to fall off. Dude. I was just getting going because
- 33:50Speaker 2: I'm smart. I love it.
- 33:52Speaker 4: So when it got taken away, I relied on my family.
- 33:56Speaker 4: I relied on the people that loved me. Yeah, I
- 34:00Speaker 4: just you know, you trust me. Every day I wake
- 34:03Speaker 4: up and I think about it every day, and it's
- 34:05Speaker 4: never you change. So oh God, Yeah, Like put it
- 34:09Speaker 4: this way, I'd go manage to be the best manager
- 34:11Speaker 4: in baseball right now. But I got three boys, and
- 34:13Speaker 4: my job right now is to be their dad, right,
- 34:16Speaker 4: you know what I mean that that's my mindset, and
- 34:18Speaker 4: so I want to be there for them.
- 34:20Speaker 2: I'm not doing anything in baseball. I don't I don't care.
- 34:22Speaker 4: I'll coach you baseball to help out kids, But right
- 34:26Speaker 4: now my focus is on being a dad and being
- 34:28Speaker 4: the best version of that that I can be.
- 34:32Speaker 2: And but yeah, I think about it every day.
- 34:34Speaker 4: So it's it's it's a daily I need a psychiatrist.
- 34:38Speaker 2: So if you know a good one, hit me up.
- 34:43Speaker 1: Let's get Let's get to the next question and recognize
- 34:46Speaker 1: how valuable your presence is for your boys. Best PD
- 34:50Speaker 1: postgame nesson interview ever about the utterly rule? What's that story?
- 34:55Speaker 1: I think I I think I remember I'm saying I've
- 34:58Speaker 1: turned more double players. I don't need a rule. But
- 35:00Speaker 1: you tell us that story if you remember it.
- 35:03Speaker 2: Shoot, I don't even remember it.
- 35:05Speaker 4: Man.
- 35:05Speaker 2: I just blew my knee out and I was gonna
- 35:07Speaker 2: try to play with it. Yeah, like, listen, it is
- 35:12Speaker 2: what it is, like I don't know.
- 35:15Speaker 4: I mean, all right, you play second base. You play
- 35:18Speaker 4: second base. Guess what they're going to try to slide
- 35:20Speaker 4: into you.
- 35:20Speaker 2: It is what it is. You know what I mean
- 35:22Speaker 2: I got caught in the wrong spot. I got hit.
- 35:25Speaker 2: It happened. Yeah, like yeah, that's it. I mean, there's
- 35:30Speaker 2: no trust me.
- 35:32Speaker 4: I came up and the guys were trying to kill
- 35:34Speaker 4: you, you know what I mean.
- 35:35Speaker 2: So that slide it just it was meant to be,
- 35:39Speaker 2: you know what I mean.
- 35:41Speaker 1: Maybe we'll have Fernando Vigna on the show.
- 35:43Speaker 2: Yeah, Sacramento.
- 35:45Speaker 4: You guys brought up Fernando and Dusty Baker. These are
- 35:49Speaker 4: the best Sacramento guys ever.
- 35:51Speaker 2: You know what I mean. I'm all in.
- 35:54Speaker 1: Your book. Born to play resonated with me as a kid,
- 35:56Speaker 1: especially the chip on your shoulder for a kid trying
- 35:59Speaker 1: to make it. How do you balance that prove them
- 36:01Speaker 1: wrong mentality? And I didn't see the end of it.
- 36:04Speaker 1: To prove them, prove them wrong mentality with must be
- 36:07Speaker 1: being true to yourself.
- 36:11Speaker 4: It's the same thing. Guys show up every day ready
- 36:13Speaker 4: to work. How are you going to get better that day?
- 36:16Speaker 4: The results don't matter. How are we going to impact
- 36:19Speaker 4: the game and try to win that game? If you
- 36:22Speaker 4: if you play the win and you play the game
- 36:24Speaker 4: the right way, you're gonna do something good in the
- 36:26Speaker 4: box score. That's what people don't realize that, you know,
- 36:29Speaker 4: they all they do. Now they got a hitting coach,
- 36:31Speaker 4: pitching coach, infield coach, outfield guy, whatever.
- 36:35Speaker 2: Who's the guy that helps you play to win? Who's
- 36:38Speaker 2: that guy?
- 36:40Speaker 1: And so who did you who did you look across
- 36:42Speaker 1: the diamond ass another team and say that guy is
- 36:47Speaker 1: a winner? I like that guy even if he was
- 36:50Speaker 1: on the other team.
- 36:51Speaker 2: Oh, Jeter was that guy. Yeah, he was.
- 36:54Speaker 4: Like when we played the Yankees, like, I knew I
- 36:56Speaker 4: had to, Like we had to beat him him physically,
- 37:02Speaker 4: We had to. He was coming, you know what I mean.
- 37:06Speaker 4: And I'm pretty sure he'd say the same thing about me, like.
- 37:08Speaker 1: He's like relationship.
- 37:10Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I'm pretty sure.
- 37:12Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm pretty sure I got to kill that guy
- 37:14Speaker 4: to beat him, and he'd probably do it, you know
- 37:16Speaker 4: what I mean.
- 37:17Speaker 2: So, you know, you know what I mean, Like he
- 37:19Speaker 2: he he was. He was the guy.
- 37:21Speaker 4: I'm like when we went to New York and he's playing,
- 37:23Speaker 4: I'm like, all right, I got a I got an
- 37:25Speaker 4: extra this, you know.
- 37:26Speaker 2: What I mean? Yeah, that's great.
- 37:28Speaker 1: Man.
- 37:29Speaker 3: So Mark has a question here to David Artiez really
- 37:31Speaker 3: not know your name for the first ten years of
- 37:33Speaker 3: your career.
- 37:35Speaker 4: He just he called me pee wee all the time,
- 37:37Speaker 4: so kind of like pe Yeah, nobody knows. He didn't
- 37:43Speaker 4: know anybody's name, so but no, he just called me
- 37:47Speaker 4: pee wee all the time.
- 37:48Speaker 2: And yeah, he was good.
- 37:53Speaker 1: Yeah, questions is great. We really appreciate that. This is
- 37:55Speaker 1: the most questions that we've ever had on a show.
- 37:57Speaker 1: And I appreciate you being an open book. So let's
- 38:00Speaker 1: get to another question. And if justin you have a
- 38:02Speaker 1: thought that comes into your head, feel free to spit
- 38:05Speaker 1: it out here. But the next question, uh, pee wee,
- 38:08Speaker 1: how was Big Poppy as a teammate? And uh when
- 38:12Speaker 1: he hit that Grand Slam in twenty thirteen where Tory
- 38:15Speaker 1: Hunter went head over heels? What's your what's your memories?
- 38:17Speaker 1: How electric the building was that night?
- 38:20Speaker 4: Oh?
- 38:21Speaker 2: That was great.
- 38:21Speaker 4: That that was great because I got on base before that.
- 38:27Speaker 4: They they brought Al Albuquerque in to get me out
- 38:30Speaker 4: and I and I hit up base hits or right,
- 38:32Speaker 4: and Al was tough man like, he had that slider.
- 38:35Speaker 4: I'm like, oh, don't throw me slider, and sure enough
- 38:37Speaker 4: he threw me at fastball. I don't know, I blame
- 38:39Speaker 4: I blame whoever was calling pitches, but I got a hit,
- 38:43Speaker 4: and I'm thinking in my head, if they bring in
- 38:45Speaker 4: ben Wah and he hangs that split like David's gonna
- 38:50Speaker 4: get a home run off him, you know what I mean,
- 38:52Speaker 4: you know? And then in my mind, I'm thinking that,
- 38:55Speaker 4: but you know how hard it is to do that, right?
- 38:58Speaker 4: And then he and then sure enough he did. So
- 39:01Speaker 4: it was it was pretty surreal. It felt like obviously
- 39:04Speaker 4: that year we were playing for more than just baseball,
- 39:06Speaker 4: with what happened to Boston and the bombing, the whole,
- 39:09Speaker 4: the whole thing. So when it went over the fence,
- 39:11Speaker 4: I was running as fast as I could, so I
- 39:13Speaker 4: just heard the crowds reaction.
- 39:14Speaker 2: That place is going nuts. It was fun.
- 39:17Speaker 1: It's great cool.
- 39:18Speaker 3: It was fun, all right. So let's get to the
- 39:21Speaker 3: next question here. How is fatherhood? How has fatherhood and
- 39:24Speaker 3: coaching change of perspective on what really matters in baseball?
- 39:29Speaker 2: It has a lot, great question.
- 39:31Speaker 4: It has a lot like as a as a dad,
- 39:36Speaker 4: I want my kids to be successful people and good people.
- 39:41Speaker 2: I really do.
- 39:42Speaker 4: So when I coach them, that's what I'm preparing them for.
- 39:46Speaker 4: I'm not preparing my two younger boys to be major
- 39:49Speaker 4: league baseball players.
- 39:50Speaker 2: It's not family business.
- 39:52Speaker 4: There's twenty three thousand people in the history of life
- 39:54Speaker 4: to play in the major leagues. So what I did,
- 39:57Speaker 4: if that's your goal, it's an unrealistic expert for you. Now,
- 40:01Speaker 4: are they good? Yeah, they're good players for their age
- 40:04Speaker 4: that they can play. We're light years away.
- 40:07Speaker 2: From when it matters.
- 40:08Speaker 4: So I'm their dad like that, and I'm their coach
- 40:12Speaker 4: like that, like we have to work and get better
- 40:15Speaker 4: every day. And even my oldest boys playing basketball, I
- 40:18Speaker 4: tell them every day the things you can control your attitude, effort,
- 40:21Speaker 4: and preparation and your communication. There's four things you can control.
- 40:25Speaker 4: I go, if you're doing all four of those things,
- 40:28Speaker 4: lay your head on the bed and go to sleep.
- 40:30Speaker 4: You're doing the right things. You're doing well.
- 40:33Speaker 1: You know. It's funny. I think a lot of people
- 40:35Speaker 1: with your attitude. It strikes me you were either loved
- 40:39Speaker 1: certainly in Boston, you were respected seemingly everywhere, and you
- 40:42Speaker 1: were probably disliked in certain cities because of that whole attitude.
- 40:47Speaker 1: Did any of the perceptions of people of you matter
- 40:50Speaker 1: to you at all? Because I think kids, especially in
- 40:53Speaker 1: society today, are always worried about what other people think,
- 40:56Speaker 1: and social media, etc.
- 41:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I and that, And that's that's a good question.
- 41:03Speaker 2: I didn't. I did.
- 41:04Speaker 4: I wasn't, you know, at the end of my career,
- 41:05Speaker 4: obviously the social media thing was whatever it is, But
- 41:08Speaker 4: I didn't. I was trying to earn everyone's respect so much.
- 41:13Speaker 4: That's what I cared about, and I and I earned it.
- 41:17Speaker 4: Like I go into Cleveland and and they boo the
- 41:19Speaker 4: you know what out of everybody, and then my booze
- 41:21Speaker 4: were kind of light, you.
- 41:23Speaker 2: Know what I mean.
- 41:24Speaker 4: Like I go in to New York and they go, Pedroia,
- 41:27Speaker 4: we hate you, but we kind of.
- 41:29Speaker 2: Wish you were on our team. So I'm doing my job,
- 41:32Speaker 2: you know what I mean.
- 41:34Speaker 4: We go to Tampa and this and the seven fans
- 41:36Speaker 4: they got, six of them would yell at me and
- 41:38Speaker 4: be like, hey, you saga.
- 41:40Speaker 2: We kind of like you though. So I'm doing the
- 41:42Speaker 2: right thing.
- 41:43Speaker 4: So but but I never really cared what other people
- 41:47Speaker 4: thought about me.
- 41:48Speaker 2: I really didn't.
- 41:49Speaker 4: I I showed up ready to win, ready to play
- 41:51Speaker 4: the game the right way. And and if you like me,
- 41:53Speaker 4: you like me. If you don't, you don't. But I'm
- 41:56Speaker 4: not going to change who I am for for for whoever.
- 41:59Speaker 3: Yeah, I like that a lot. I have a question
- 42:02Speaker 3: before I get to this next question here though, So
- 42:04Speaker 3: when you talk about, you know, winning was what you
- 42:07Speaker 3: cared about, Dustin, that's what drove you to go to
- 42:11Speaker 3: the park, get there early? Could when you when you
- 42:14Speaker 3: guys had players come in, whether it's you know they're
- 42:17Speaker 3: called up or free agent signings after you kind of
- 42:21Speaker 3: figured it out. And I'm like, how to win and
- 42:23Speaker 3: how to get there? How quickly could you figure that
- 42:26Speaker 3: out with with a newcomer that's brought into the clubhouse.
- 42:31Speaker 2: It takes time.
- 42:32Speaker 4: Boston's a hard place, man, it is. And I came
- 42:35Speaker 4: up in it. I got drafted by the Red Sox,
- 42:37Speaker 4: like all a lot of the guys that you know,
- 42:40Speaker 4: I want to know seven with and thirteen, A lot
- 42:42Speaker 4: of those guys came up, so we knew what it was,
- 42:45Speaker 4: you know, we knew their ups and downs. The you know,
- 42:48Speaker 4: it's like five seasons and one you know what I mean.
- 42:51Speaker 4: You can have a good month and you're the best
- 42:52Speaker 4: player on the planet. You could have a bad month
- 42:55Speaker 4: and your family's lives are threatened.
- 42:57Speaker 2: So I knew. And I try to tell free.
- 43:00Speaker 4: Agents or new guys coming in, I'm like, hey, listen, right,
- 43:02Speaker 4: here like stay the course, you know what I mean,
- 43:05Speaker 4: Like show up, work, do the right things. We're here
- 43:09Speaker 4: to win. You're gonna have good months, you're gonna have
- 43:11Speaker 4: bad months. You're gonna have good games, you have bad games.
- 43:14Speaker 2: Be yourself.
- 43:15Speaker 4: And and they look at me like like we don't
- 43:18Speaker 4: need a psychology evaluation. And I'm like, you're gonna because
- 43:21Speaker 4: this place is nuts and you've got to go through
- 43:24Speaker 4: the fight, and you're gonna go through it. And sure
- 43:27Speaker 4: enough when they have that tough month, they're looking at
- 43:29Speaker 4: me like, hey, what do I do?
- 43:30Speaker 2: And I'm like, you're.
- 43:31Speaker 4: Fine, Yeah, relax, It's a part of the game.
- 43:36Speaker 2: So was.
- 43:41Speaker 1: Colorado your favorite place to hit?
- 43:43Speaker 2: Not?
- 43:43Speaker 4: I ah, ship Carl, I'm a three hundred hitter.
- 43:48Speaker 2: I like hitting everywhere nuts, Thank you very much.
- 43:51Speaker 1: Next question, I do know this. It was your favorite
- 43:54Speaker 1: place to get stopped at the gate on the way
- 43:55Speaker 1: in so justin.
- 43:59Speaker 2: I can't believe it.
- 44:00Speaker 1: One of the great stories ever. He gets stopped at
- 44:02Speaker 1: the gate because because he's not a player, who does
- 44:05Speaker 1: he think? Who's this little guy think he is? They
- 44:07Speaker 1: would just say to the security guy.
- 44:10Speaker 2: Go you watching the game.
- 44:12Speaker 4: I'm the guy leading off the World series with a
- 44:14Speaker 4: home run.
- 44:16Speaker 1: If your guy Jeff Francis, Yeah.
- 44:18Speaker 2: Go, I go ask Jeff Francis who I am. But
- 44:21Speaker 2: no disrespect for Jeff, poor guy.
- 44:24Speaker 1: No, but you do you eventually got in the gate.
- 44:26Speaker 1: All right, we'll do We'll do one or two more
- 44:28Speaker 1: questions and then we'll get to the kitchen sink. Here's
- 44:30Speaker 1: the next question from one of our one of our teammates.
- 44:33Speaker 1: I graduated high school, I got no real college attention.
- 44:35Speaker 1: What should be my next step to getting attention from
- 44:38Speaker 1: college coaches? And maybe Justin you can chime into.
- 44:41Speaker 3: Yeah, go ahead, Dustin, you go, you go first, man.
- 44:45Speaker 2: No, I mean keep working.
- 44:46Speaker 4: I mean the you know, just because right right away
- 44:50Speaker 4: you're not getting the right look. You know, if you
- 44:52Speaker 4: go to junior college and play well, continue to get better,
- 44:56Speaker 4: continue to work on yourself physically, mentally, h you know,
- 45:01Speaker 4: you'll have an opportunity.
- 45:03Speaker 2: I mean, there's always a place for someone to play.
- 45:05Speaker 2: You just got to find it. And that's the way
- 45:07Speaker 2: I look at it. Yep.
- 45:09Speaker 3: I like that a lot, man, And I would actually
- 45:10Speaker 3: add into this, like with where college baseball is at
- 45:14Speaker 3: right now, it's it's transactional, so you can even if
- 45:18Speaker 3: you can find your way onto a Division III roster
- 45:20Speaker 3: and and you know, maybe maybe you maybe you blossom
- 45:23Speaker 3: at twenty years old. I mean, you can always transfer
- 45:26Speaker 3: from there. So yeah, keep your options open. And depending
- 45:29Speaker 3: on what age you are and where you're at, I mean,
- 45:32Speaker 3: there are some things that you can do that really
- 45:33Speaker 3: can put yourself in front of the right people. But yeah,
- 45:37Speaker 3: I mean, just keep keep all the options open. And
- 45:39Speaker 3: sometimes you might need a stepping stone to get to
- 45:41Speaker 3: where you want to be too.
- 45:44Speaker 1: All right, let's get to the kitchen stake here, Desha.
- 45:46Speaker 1: And these are the questions that are a little bit
- 45:47Speaker 1: off off base. And I'll ask the first one. Was
- 45:51Speaker 1: there anyone you played against that you wish you had
- 45:53Speaker 1: one of their skills?
- 45:56Speaker 2: I mean, geez, I wish I could hit home runs
- 45:58Speaker 2: like David Ortiz. Come on, man, go to the next one.
- 46:06Speaker 3: So if I asked your wife, Kelly, what job around
- 46:08Speaker 3: the house you're terrible at? What would she say?
- 46:10Speaker 2: And why dude, I'm not terrible at anything. Let's go.
- 46:14Speaker 2: She wouldn't say anything. Are you kidding me? Are you
- 46:18Speaker 2: kidding me?
- 46:19Speaker 1: I could do her job.
- 46:21Speaker 2: Everybody's job. I don't want to hear it.
- 46:24Speaker 1: So nobody cleans a toilet like dustin Pedroia. Is that
- 46:27Speaker 1: the headline of this show?
- 46:29Speaker 4: Come on, Robbie, I played a long time in the
- 46:30Speaker 4: big leagues. Do you think any of us are cleaning toilets?
- 46:35Speaker 1: You have a clubby at hometown too, Come on now, yeah, yeah.
- 46:39Speaker 1: Other than what was your favorite place to play?
- 46:43Speaker 4: Old Yankee Stadium was my favorite other than Finway obviously
- 46:47Speaker 4: old old, not not the new one.
- 46:49Speaker 2: No, hell no, the old one was. That was Yankee Stadium.
- 46:53Speaker 2: That was amazing.
- 46:54Speaker 1: You feel the ghost Why literally why.
- 46:57Speaker 4: You just walked in there in the tunnels and the
- 47:00Speaker 4: crowd that was That was baseball, man, That that was
- 47:04Speaker 4: That was special.
- 47:05Speaker 2: It was. It was. I'm I'm fortunate, I can tell
- 47:11Speaker 2: it was. It was. Gimbi came up and i was
- 47:12Speaker 2: playing on the shift.
- 47:13Speaker 4: And the ground was moving and I'm like, oh my god,
- 47:16Speaker 4: this is baseball.
- 47:18Speaker 2: Like it was awesome. Dude, Mariano come in and I'm like,
- 47:22Speaker 2: oh ship, look at Mariana. Here we go, like, yeah,
- 47:26Speaker 2: it's awesome.
- 47:27Speaker 1: That was not. And one series against Arizona with those
- 47:31Speaker 1: two late inning heroics.
- 47:33Speaker 2: I lost my ear pod small as many the kitchen,
- 47:43Speaker 2: I got my left one. I don't know where the
- 47:44Speaker 2: other one is.
- 47:45Speaker 1: Can you hear out of your Can you hear out
- 47:47Speaker 1: of your left ear?
- 47:48Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 47:49Speaker 1: I can hear good. So I was just.
- 47:53Speaker 2: There.
- 47:53Speaker 1: Forget it. You're on a roof, it's on the ground
- 47:55Speaker 1: somewhere you In two thousand and one, I thought Yankee
- 47:58Speaker 1: Stadium with BK cam giving up Homers was literally going
- 48:01Speaker 1: to collapse. It was the loudest I bet I've ever seen.
- 48:05Speaker 2: It was special, special place.
- 48:08Speaker 1: Last question, go ahead, just all right.
- 48:09Speaker 3: If you had, if you had one do over one
- 48:11Speaker 3: Mulligan in life to this point, what would that be
- 48:13Speaker 3: for you?
- 48:15Speaker 2: Mine would be to enjoy what I did more. I
- 48:18Speaker 2: didn't enjoy it.
- 48:20Speaker 4: I was so focused on the day the entire time,
- 48:25Speaker 4: the entire time.
- 48:26Speaker 2: Guys like I tell Kelly every day, I'm like, man,
- 48:29Speaker 2: you remember that time we did this? She goes, yeah,
- 48:32Speaker 2: do you?
- 48:32Speaker 4: And I'm like, well, kind of, because I was so
- 48:36Speaker 4: get into the field, trying to prepare, trying to find
- 48:39Speaker 4: a way to win, trying to I I wish I
- 48:42Speaker 4: had a step.
- 48:43Speaker 2: Back every day and been like, man, I'm in the
- 48:45Speaker 2: big leagues.
- 48:46Speaker 4: I'm getting a chance to to face Roy Holiday, I'm
- 48:49Speaker 4: facing King Felix in Seattle.
- 48:51Speaker 2: I'm you understand what I'm saying. I didn't. I didn't
- 48:54Speaker 2: enjoy it.
- 48:54Speaker 1: Man, it's interesting. So it's interesting just when it's a
- 48:59Speaker 1: fine line. Like for me watching and observing you, it
- 49:02Speaker 1: felt like you got more joy out of the game
- 49:05Speaker 1: than anybody. But you're you're suggesting you were so focused
- 49:09Speaker 1: on it you didn't feel the joy that you exuded.
- 49:12Speaker 4: Yeah, Like I was obsessed with winning and I was afraid.
- 49:17Speaker 4: It's funny, like I was afraid it would go away.
- 49:21Speaker 4: I was terrified it would go away. I never wanted
- 49:23Speaker 4: it to end. Like I could have played if I
- 49:25Speaker 4: didn't get hurt out of played seven more years and
- 49:27Speaker 4: I'd have been good, trust me.
- 49:29Speaker 2: Like I just couldn't run.
- 49:31Speaker 4: Like I take ground balls with the kids now and
- 49:32Speaker 4: they are like, hey, coach, you're good.
- 49:35Speaker 2: I'm like, yeah, no, no kidding, Like no, I know,
- 49:39Speaker 2: I know, yeh, Like I wish I could still do it. Yeah,
- 49:44Speaker 2: So I hear ye, which it lasted longer, so were
- 49:49Speaker 2: I want.
- 49:49Speaker 3: To I want to follow up on that. So, I mean,
- 49:51Speaker 3: that's pretty profound, man, because I think many people would
- 49:54Speaker 3: be surprised by that. What would your advice be then,
- 49:57Speaker 3: based on that m.
- 50:00Speaker 2: Don't take yourself so serious, you know what I mean.
- 50:03Speaker 2: I took the losses to heart.
- 50:05Speaker 4: I did like it killed me, Like I'm gonna I'll
- 50:08Speaker 4: probably live till one hundred and ten. But if I
- 50:10Speaker 4: if I didn't take him that bad, I'd probably lived
- 50:12Speaker 4: on one thirty. Like I took you, asked Tito or anybody.
- 50:16Speaker 4: I'd sit at my locker like I let everyone down,
- 50:20Speaker 4: you know what I mean, It killed me to lose
- 50:23Speaker 4: so and then and then I'd think of I'd go
- 50:26Speaker 4: to try.
- 50:26Speaker 2: To go to sleep, and I just think about the game.
- 50:29Speaker 4: And then I'd sleep six hours and the only thing
- 50:32Speaker 4: I think about at breakfast was trying to find a
- 50:34Speaker 4: way to win.
- 50:34Speaker 2: How am I going to beat this guy? How? You
- 50:37Speaker 2: know what I mean, He's better than me. I gotta
- 50:39Speaker 2: find a way.
- 50:40Speaker 4: So I wish I sat back and was like, you
- 50:43Speaker 4: know what, everything's gonna be fine. I wish I could
- 50:46Speaker 4: do what the advice I'm giving, you know what I mean,
- 50:49Speaker 4: stay right there every day, the O for fours, the
- 50:52Speaker 4: O for fours, the ten for twenties, the O for twenties,
- 50:56Speaker 4: and just stay right there.
- 50:57Speaker 2: And show up with a smile and work and not
- 50:59Speaker 2: be so obsessed with it. I wish you were.
- 51:02Speaker 1: In a lot of ways. You are doing that because
- 51:03Speaker 1: you're doing it for your children, and you're doing it
- 51:05Speaker 1: for the kids you coach, which is wonderful. Two more,
- 51:08Speaker 1: because I know your relationship Justin. I was at the
- 51:11Speaker 1: Gold Gloves banquet a few years back and Dustin introduced
- 51:14Speaker 1: Terry Francona, and you could really feel the love that
- 51:18Speaker 1: Dustin had for Tito, who he just mentioned. You strike
- 51:23Speaker 1: me as like, arguably one of the great teammates you
- 51:27Speaker 1: could ever have. Your respect level for Francona that relationship.
- 51:31Speaker 1: How important are relationships and teammates to the success of
- 51:36Speaker 1: a team and the success of an individual person.
- 51:40Speaker 2: It's the game.
- 51:41Speaker 4: It's baseball at that level, you know. And I'd say
- 51:44Speaker 4: even in college too, I would say that people win games.
- 51:49Speaker 4: People win games. Look at the Milwaukee Brewers, for God's sakes,
- 51:53Speaker 4: they stink. They stink, guys, I hate to break everyone
- 51:56Speaker 4: in the news. They stink. They got a couple good arms.
- 51:59Speaker 4: You got Al Freelick out there, which I want South
- 52:03Speaker 4: Freelick hitting with the game on the line. You want
- 52:05Speaker 4: to know whycause he's the toughest dude out there. He's
- 52:08Speaker 4: gonna fit people win baseball games. You can come up
- 52:12Speaker 4: with all these analytics. I don't give a rats exit, VLO,
- 52:17Speaker 4: launch angle, fp q RC.
- 52:20Speaker 2: You can put whatever you want on it.
- 52:22Speaker 4: The human being will always win the baseball game.
- 52:26Speaker 2: It is what it is, guys.
- 52:27Speaker 4: The game's been around for one hundred and fifty years.
- 52:29Speaker 4: We're trying to change it like hell right now. And
- 52:32Speaker 4: I guess what. The teams that win have the best players,
- 52:36Speaker 4: They have the right attitude, they do the right things.
- 52:39Speaker 2: You're in and you're out.
- 52:40Speaker 4: Everybody's hating on the Dodgers, right let me tell you
- 52:42Speaker 4: something about the Dodgers.
- 52:43Speaker 2: You know what, they have winning people. That's why they win.
- 52:49Speaker 2: It is what it is, all right here, we do
- 52:52Speaker 2: this about everybody fired. But okay, we do.
- 52:55Speaker 1: This every week. We do this every week, and you're
- 52:58Speaker 1: going to think about it for a second. Who is
- 53:01Speaker 1: your MVP. Who is the most valuable person in your development?
- 53:07Speaker 4: Oh gosh, dude, I can't. I can't name one person.
- 53:11Speaker 4: I mean, they're listen. I've never had a bad coach
- 53:14Speaker 4: in my life. And I say that genuinely, Like my
- 53:18Speaker 4: freshman varsity coach, my college coach, all my minor league managers,
- 53:24Speaker 4: my infield coaches, Terry Francona, John Ferrell, Bob Bobby v
- 53:32Speaker 4: obviously Alex Cora, Mikey Log one of my favorite teammates ever.
- 53:37Speaker 4: Like guys, there's multiple people that that impacted me, and
- 53:40Speaker 4: they did it in a way. I was always always
- 53:43Speaker 4: a sponge and I wanted to learn from everybody, so
- 53:46Speaker 4: I took information in better than anybody. That's what made
- 53:49Speaker 4: me good. And I've never had a bad coach. And
- 53:53Speaker 4: I and I and and obviously my parents are great.
- 53:55Speaker 4: I have great parents, and they pushed me. They told
- 53:58Speaker 4: me the truth. Parents don't tell your kids the truth.
- 54:02Speaker 4: Tell that is the most important thing. My parents told
- 54:05Speaker 4: me the truth.
- 54:06Speaker 2: When I sucked, guess what, you got to get better?
- 54:08Speaker 2: You stink When I was good, Hey, you need to
- 54:11Speaker 2: get better. You stink like that. That is a reality.
- 54:15Speaker 4: Every day is a grind, and and that's what makes
- 54:18Speaker 4: a successful person. If someone's on your you know what,
- 54:20Speaker 4: every day, guess what, You're going to have your backs
- 54:22Speaker 4: against the wall every day. You're a different person. If
- 54:25Speaker 4: you play every day like it's Game seven of the
- 54:27Speaker 4: World Series.
- 54:28Speaker 2: You will be better. And that's how I approach life.
- 54:31Speaker 1: I love that. All right. I got an idea, Go
- 54:33Speaker 1: clean the bathroom. See how we do with.
- 54:35Speaker 2: That, dude, I mean, I'm in a rental house. I'm
- 54:38Speaker 2: in a rental house. I don't need to.
- 54:40Speaker 1: Thanks, Justine, thank you so much. You're the best. I
- 54:42Speaker 1: love you.
- 54:44Speaker 2: You're the Justin
