Latest / The Catholic Current / LTACL: Eleven Guardian Angels? (Fr. Robert McTeigue, S.J.) 10/5/26
Transcript
- 0:00I gotta ask you this. When was the last time you thought about guardian
- 0:03angels? I've been thinking about them a lot lately because we just had that Feast
- 0:07of the Guardian Angels not too long ago, and we know by faith that
- 0:11everyone has one guardian angel assigned to them.
- 0:15But what if I told you that I have 11
- 0:20guardian angels? Would you believe me? Stay with me, I got a story to tell.
- 0:24Hi, I'm Jesuit Father Robert McTeague, your host here every day at The Catholic Current,
- 0:28coming to you from the Station of the Cross Catholic Media Network. Let's a
- 0:32closer look. Glad you're here. So how
- 0:35did I end up with 11 guardian angels? So let's see, everybody gets one.
- 0:39That's de fide. It's a matter of faith. Padre Pio
- 0:42said that priests get a second guardian angel. When I heard that, I was very
- 0:47much relieved because I feel really sorry for my original guardian angel.
- 0:50I believe he has PTSD and a facial tic and gets startled
- 0:55by loud noises. I, I've really put him through it.
- 0:58But then about 15, 20 years ago, I got an anonymous
- 1:02letter from someone who said he had prayed for me the
- 1:06Chaplet of Christ King of the Universe. Well, that sounds like
- 1:10a good name for a chaplet. And it's claimed that whoever had received
- 1:14the revelation regarding this chaplet said
- 1:17that if you pray this chaplet for someone, that person
- 1:21is perpetually accompanied by one member each
- 1:25of the 9 choirs of angels. So 9 extra angels
- 1:29plus my priest guardian angel and my original guardian angel, that comes out
- 1:33to be 11. And then that got me thinking to a
- 1:37charming painting that I had in my office many years ago, and it was called
- 1:41Watchers in the Night. And my goodness,
- 1:45it shows a little kid sound asleep in his bed,
- 1:48and standing behind him is a ginormous angel,
- 1:52not a cute angel. I think it's about 7 feet tall.
- 1:55It's got a spear in its hand about 10 feet tall. It's got a ball
- 1:58of flame in his other hand, and he's got his wings wrapped
- 2:03around the bed. This is a guardian angel on duty.
- 2:07And I showed that to a student of mine. I said, don't you find that
- 2:10reassuring and comforting? And she said, not at all.
- 2:13I asked her why not. And she said, well, look, if I need that kind
- 2:17of protection, what the heck is after me? And that's a really good
- 2:20question too. The truth is we are being
- 2:25contested for. We are in a spiritual
- 2:29battle. The devil, the accuser of the brethren,
- 2:33whom St. Ignatius Loyola called the enemy of our human nature,
- 2:37hates God and therefore hates us and
- 2:42wants to spite God by destroying us, by turning
- 2:45us away from God. We are being contested for,
- 2:49and we can, I hope, breathe a sigh of relief, have some kind of reassurance
- 2:55in recognizing that we do have a guardian angel who's
- 2:59there to, you know, guard and guide and all that. But recently
- 3:03I've been reading a lot of C.S. Lewis, including his science fiction
- 3:06trilogy. And the first volume is called Out of the Silent
- 3:10Planet. And the question is, well,
- 3:13what's the silent planet? And I
- 3:17did some research for what Lewis meant. And I located it all in
- 3:21what used to be known as the Harmony of the Spheres.
- 3:25And it was a belief in the ancient world, in the medieval world, that as
- 3:29the planets moved along their course,
- 3:33the arc of their movement can be measured in numbers
- 3:37which can be translated into a musical
- 3:41harmony. It's a fascinating idea to consider.
- 3:45And the Medievalists said that the planets don't just plunk
- 3:48along on their own; they have angels to
- 3:52guard them. And of course, the Medievalists, if you're gonna
- 3:56make a list, you gotta have a complete list. And so, there were angels not
- 3:59only moving the planets and not only guarding individuals, but there were
- 4:03angels for groups and religious communities and
- 4:08ethnic groups and nations and so on. And so,
- 4:11C.S. Lewis said, that the angels and
- 4:15all that they guard and protect is supposed to move under God's
- 4:20providence and together form the harmony of the spheres to
- 4:24form the celestial cosmic symphony.
- 4:28And why was the Earth considered the silent
- 4:32planet? Because that was the planet that was in
- 4:35rebellion. Man rebelled against
- 4:40God under the prompting of the fallen angel Satan.
- 4:44And so mankind and the planet Earth withheld
- 4:49from God, withheld from the harmony of the spheres,
- 4:53withheld from the symphony of creation,
- 4:57the notes that only we could contribute.
- 5:01We were cheating creation and cheating the Creator by
- 5:05virtue of our sin. So when we sin, it's not
- 5:08just me breaking some arbitrary rules.
- 5:13It's not just me annoying the Creator, a dangerous thing to
- 5:17do. But there is a cosmic and metaphysical drama
- 5:21taking place. And a lot of it has to do with
- 5:25whether or not we cooperate with
- 5:30nature and grace in both the visible and the invisible
- 5:33orders or not. Do we contribute to the symphony,
- 5:38or do we, in spite,
- 5:40withhold the notes we must give and instead bring about
- 5:44a disharmony, a dishonor? A lot
- 5:49to think about. My encouragement for you is to remember
- 5:53you are being contested for and
- 5:57you are being provided for. And I
- 6:01ask you Look at yourself and say, am I acting
- 6:06accordingly? Meanwhile, think on these things today.
- 6:09Take them to prayer and talk about it with those you love. Go in peace,
- 6:12and please do pray for me, for I am a sinner.
