- 0:00This is Retro Sports Radio. Visit RetroSeasons.com for more sports history.
- 0:07On April 29, 1985, the Orlando Renegades faced the New Jersey Generals at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, New Jersey for a Week 10 matchup in the USFL's third season.
- 0:18The Renegades were coached by Lee Corso in their first season in Orlando after having transferred the franchise from the Washington Federals in 1984.
- 0:25New Jersey was coached by Walt Michaels and entered the game with a 7-2 record atop the USFL's Eastern Conference.
- 0:32This game had additional significance as it was being played just when the USFL had won its antitrust suit against the NFL.
- 0:38This allowed the league to schedule their 1986 season with games in the fall.
- 0:42The decision doesn't affect this game specifically, but the broadcast does involve quite a bit of discussion with executives on the future of the league.
- 0:50This includes an extensive fourth quarter in-game interview with Generals owner Donald Trump.
- 0:55This audio recording is from the WABC Radio broadcast featuring announcers Charlie Steiner and Dave Herman.
- 1:25This is the stand-by. The guys have been in there for the longest period of time, but the other guys surrounding them, Stroth, Mackie, and Mags make for a very fine offensive line.
- 1:33One of the better offensive lines in this league.
- 1:35Well, the Orlando Renegades have won the toss and have elected to receive. The Renegades are retired in white uniforms with blue piping and numerals.
- 1:42The Generals will be in their familiar home uniforms, the red jerseys, white numerals, white pants, and red piping.
- 1:47And again tonight we're not going to see John Joyce. Bob, you had a chance to talk to him right before the game, did you not?
- 1:52I talked to John Joyce. He is on the sideline here. Of course he's not dressed. He's been working hard and rehabilitating his knee.
- 1:58He feels that he can run straight ahead and back up pretty well with it. He's in a brace, but he can't go laterally, and that's the big thing he needs as a linebacker, that lateral movement.
- 2:07He feels that he's still going to be questionable next week against Jacksonville, but he isn't proving each day.
- 2:12The referee for tonight's game, Bill Parkinson. The umpire is Carl Pagawelli.
- 2:17The headlines have been Hayden Terry, the line judge Larry Hill, the back judge Chet Nistapano, the side judge Ted Collado, and the field judge is Bob Mantoo.
- 2:25Jerry Parrish is standing back at his own five yard line anticipating the kickoff from Roger Ruzik.
- 2:31Coming up at halftime, the Commissioner of the USFL, Harry Usher, and more about today's meetings in Teaneck.
- 2:37In the second half, Donald Trump will be joining us in the Generals' broadcast booth to talk about the Generals' aspect of this very big story out of Teaneck, New Jersey, of all datelines today.
- 2:46Donald is welcome anytime he stops by. That's right. His bats and balls are in there.
- 2:51Here's Ruzik making his way toward the football, and we are underway. It's a gorgeous night in the metropolitan area.
- 2:57Parrish, two yards deep in the end zone running straight ahead to the 10, to the 15, and he is down shy of the 20 yard line.
- 3:04The Generals' special teams once again doing the job.
- 3:07As Frank Manning came up to make the tackle along with Kyle Borland, and Kyle Borland was a great story for the Generals last week, replacing the injured John Joyce.
- 3:15He was the leading tackler with 10. Yeah, he was, and I gotta tell you, that's gotta be a good credibility to Walt Michaels and his staff, and a good thing for that young man, too.
- 3:23He has the opportunity to play, and when you get that opportunity, it's up to you to make the most of it.
- 3:27He obviously did last week, as he did on that one particular play right there, covering special teams as well as playing number one inside linebacker.
- 3:34You wonder why Orlando's two and seven on the opening play. They had 10 men in the huddle, and hardly they brought in Ricky Clay.
- 3:39And now he's on a wing to the right with Bledsoe, the single setback, Collier the quarterback. The handoff is to Bledsoe's off-right tackle.
- 3:47He gets perhaps four yards to the 24 yard line, where it'll be second down and six yards to go. Emmanuel Weaver made the tackle for New Jersey.
- 3:55And we're going with a new strong safety tonight. Don-Al Daniel is in the game at strong safety for John Preston.
- 4:01John Preston, as we know, along with John Joyce is the leading tackler on this New Jersey General football team. They may miss him tonight.
- 4:08Bledsoe and Clayter split in the backfield. Jackie Flowers flanked to the right. And Joey Walters to the left on second down and six from the Orlando 24.
- 4:17Clayton backed up behind the line of scrimmage, and he is brought down by Kyle Borland and Jim Byrne.
- 4:23And he was brought down by Maurice Clements as a guy that really come in there. And Borland and Byrne put finishes on it.
- 4:30But it was Clements coming up straight up, making that tackle an outstanding hit by Maurice Clements playing another linebacker position.
- 4:38So it's third down and seven, a loss of one on the play at the 23 yard line.
- 4:43Jeff Smith and Jerry Parrish are now the wide receivers. Flowers is in as well. So he has three wide outs. Make it four wide outs.
- 4:52Walter Smith, Flowers and Parrish on third and seven. Collier from the shotgun. Back to throw, throwing over the middle. He completes it to Curtis Bledsoe to the 31 yard line.
- 5:02That'll be enough for the first down, the tackle made by John Miller.
- 5:05That was a short pass. They had every receiver split out wide and they just came to the man over the middle. The linebackers took a good drop.
- 5:12The big thing tonight is Reggie Collier. He's been the difference as far as Orlando in this football this season thus far.
- 5:18They've got to contain Reggie Collier. He likes to run the ball and it looks to be that they're trying to run the football early against their opponents.
- 5:25They tried it last week against Jacksonville with not much success already. They've run the ball two out of four downs against the generals.
- 5:31Out of the I-formation now, the Orlando Renegades first and 10 at their own 32 yard line with a backfield split.
- 5:38And off to Clant. Clant is out to the 35 yard line. Kyle Borland again in on the tackle. It will be second down and about five yards to go.
- 5:47Let's call it a pick up of four and make it second and six at the 36 yard line.
- 5:53Bob, you mentioned how dangerous Reggie Collier can be. He throws that short pass pretty well. He doesn't have good control on the long ball.
- 5:59But the thing that makes him dangerous is the fact that he can run the football if the passing lane breaks down, he can run the football and be effective.
- 6:07Walters flying to the left, Flowers to the right, backfield a split, second and six. Orlando at their own 36.
- 6:12And off to Curtis Blitzer, stacked up behind the line of scrimmage. Back at the 34 yard line, Mike Weddington is there along with Kyle Borland and Mo Clement.
- 6:21Beautiful job by Borland. Filled in for the middle linebacker. Just stepped up in the hole. Nobody took him on.
- 6:26And he had one on one with a running back that time, let's say. But the interesting thing is they're trying to run the football.
- 6:32And the reasoning there has to be similar to this last week. Let's control the ball on the ground. Keep it away from the generals.
- 6:37Let's not give their offense, especially their running game, too much time on the field.
- 6:41The generals ranked seventh in the league of 14 teams against the rush. 119.9 yards against per game.
- 6:48And on but the fifth or sixth play from scrimmage, Orlando is forced to call a timeout.
- 6:53Eleven minutes, 13 seconds to go. Quarter number one, no score from Giants Stadium in the middle lands.
- 6:59We'll be back on the New Jersey General's football network.
- 7:15On the boardwalk in Atlantic City, first class costs no more when you go to the centerpiece.
- 7:23Trump Plaza Hotel Casino. A glittering world of glass, grass, and class.
- 7:39And best of all, this place is right in the center of the action.
- 7:49You'll see for yourself. Trump Plaza. It's Atlantic City's centerpiece. Yes!
- 8:04You're listening to New Jersey General's football in WMCA New York, brought to you in part by the Alpha Romeo Presidents Group, automobiles built for the fun-loving rich, and you, if you hurry.
- 8:17Orlando third and seven from their own 35. Collier at a shotgun, throwing long down the sideline for Jackie Flowers, incomplete.
- 8:24He nearly got his hands on it at the 21-yard line of New Jersey, but the ball falls harmlessly incomplete.
- 8:31In on the play, defensively carrying Justin along with Gregory Johnson.
- 8:35So on fourth and seven, Greg Kader, the second leading punter in the USFL, averaging nearly 43 yards per punt.
- 8:42His longest of the season, 64 yards, ready to punt it away to Danny Knight, who is standing back at his own 22-yard line to our right.
- 8:5011 minutes, 7 seconds to go, first quarter, no score. The General's about to get their first possession of the evening.
- 8:56A good snap from center, and Kader with a high spiraling kick that is fielded by Knight at his own 20, cutting it to 25, and down he goes at the 25-yard line.
- 9:05For the General's, they'll have so-so field possession for their first possession of the game. First and 10 to go, 10 minutes and 57 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
- 9:14It was a 45-yard punt for Greg Kader, just a couple of yards over his hand.
- 9:19But hold the phone, flag on the play, let's see what that's all about.
- 9:24Somebody was downfield, Charlie, before the ball was punt, and Fred McAllister, number 53, was downfield before the ball was punt.
- 9:33It looks like Walt is going to take the ball right where it is now, here on the 26-yard line for the General's.
- 9:40And with the change of possession, there's a time out on the field, 10-57 gone, first quarter.
- 9:45General's and Orlando are scoreless, we're a giant stadium, and we'll be back.
- 9:50Happy birthday, Thunderbird. That's right, it's T-Bird's birthday, but you get to open the presents.

- 10:28But hurry, because come May 1st, the party's over.
- 10:51The General's first-at-10 play from their own 26-yard line, a quick opener to vote Carthon out to perhaps a 28.
- 11:00A pick-up of maybe two yards on the play, it'll be second down at eight, as Bernie West, the left-side linebacker, came up to make the tackle for the Renegades.
- 11:09Clock running, 10-15 to go, first quarter, this is the General's second play of the game.
- 11:14Carthen and Walker in the I-formation, with Clarence Collins flanked to the right.
- 11:18Two tight ends in the lineup now. Handoff to Herschel running off left tackle, looking to turn the corner.
- 11:23Hey, here goes Herschel, down the sideline. Walker is knocked out of bounds at the 40-yard line, but way back at the line of scrimmage.
- 11:31There is a penalty marker, however, I think it's against Orlando.
- 11:35I think you're right, Charlie. I think they're going to get him for jumping off sides, and it's going to go against Orlando.
- 11:39And already they run the sweep on second down and nine, and he picks up a ton of yards.
- 11:44What a football player Herschel Walker is. You've got to get Moe Carthen Clinton on that particular play,
- 11:49because he was right down there leading the block for Herschel Walker, enabling him to get outside and get the yard.
- 11:55It wasn't offside against the Orlando Renegades. The Generals have that first down and tend to go at the 40-yard line going in.
- 12:02Walker enters the game with 1,006 yards. He can tack on an additional 32.
- 12:07That's not going to hurt.
- 12:08Generals first to tend to go at the Orlando 40-yard line, again the I-formation, Walker the deep back.
- 12:13And once again, flank down to the right, Clarence Collins.
- 12:16And out to Herschel this time running right, turning the corner.
- 12:19Herschel is finally brought down at about the 31-yard line. He picked up only nine that time.
- 12:24And you've got to give credit to Walton, his entire coaching staff, and Bob knows this better than anybody.
- 12:29When you have a football team that's 10 days between football games, you really have to wonder, can you get them ready and peaking at the right time.
- 12:36Defensively, they certainly were ready, and it looks like offensively they're ready here just as well.
- 12:41But I've got to tell you, Dave, walking into the locker room a couple of hours before the game time, everybody was talking about this T-neck meeting today.
- 12:49They wanted to know what was what. And I've got to tell you, I was wondering whether or not their concentration had been altered by the events of the USFL over the past couple of weeks.
- 12:57Here's Flutie back to draw, second and one in his own 31, throwing sideline incomplete, intended to the far side line, to the 15-yard line for Clarence Collins.
- 13:06But Flutie had a rush to pass, so it'll be third down and one for New Jersey at the Orlando 31-yard line.
- 13:12Getting back to Walt Michaels and how he prepares his team, he now is in the second half of the season. He's very conscious of bringing players along.
- 13:18He knows the long haul better than anybody. And he's got these guys. He's trying to save their legs. He's been practicing on the grass field outside the stadium. I think they're ready.
- 13:27Generals are a 54 percent efficient team on third down. They're third and one at the Orlando 31. Carthen and Walker stack up in the I-formation.
- 13:37Hand up to Herschel looking to circle the end. He's got the first down. Herschel still on his feet. He finally made it out of bounds at the 11-yard line. He picked up 20 more.
- 13:47You can't, you know, you don't appreciate him unless you're down here.
- 13:50Well, you're right beside him. What was it like?
- 13:53It was like a blur. But I mean, the speed is fantastic. He's really just cruising along and he's just getting great blocking up front.
- 14:00We say a lot about Maurice Carthen. He's outstanding. But let's not ever forget Sam Bowers. He's the guy that creates the block to the tight inside right on the corner. And he has done an excellent job this year.
- 14:11This man truly has world-class speed. You know, you forget about that as a football player. He's got great speed.
- 14:17It's like a runaway refrigerator heading downhill from Mount Everest. It's first and 10 at the 11-yard line. Hand off to Herschel looking to circle left end.
- 14:25Barely finds a crack and gets to the 10-yard line. A pick up of one, second and nine. Herschel so far tonight, four carries, 62 yards.
- 14:33When you look at this football team, the Orlando Renegades, they do not match up on their defensive line. The guys playing there are 260, 255, 250, and 255.
- 14:43When you turn that around and look at the size and the strength and the finesse that this offensive line of generals has, you can anticipate Herschel having a real big night. He's already got his start.
- 14:53General second down and nine at the Orlando 10. Once again, out of the eye, pitch out to Herschel running right. Looking to turn in the corner.
- 15:02Herschel gets inside the 10-yard line where Kelvin Atkins, the left side linebacker, came up and made the tack.
- 15:09We've got to watch for this play. That time he pitched the ball back to Herschel and Flutie came opposite him and just sort of hung around.
- 15:15I've got to believe we saw this play earlier in the year that that pass is in the books and we may see it even from Herschel Walker throwing back to Doug Flutie one of these times.
- 15:24Generals now third down and seven at the Orlando 8. They would have to get down inside the one-yard line. Speck is in the lineup.
- 15:33Broughton flank to the left. Collins to the right. Generals in the I-formation. Carthin and Walker third and seven from the eighth.
- 15:40Here's Flutie stopping, throwing, completing. But Jeff Speck short of the first down, however, inside the five to about the four.
- 15:48What a move! That was a bootleg. That was a cold bootleg. He came out and the defensive end held his position. He knew he couldn't run with the football.
- 15:56He pulled up and he hit his tight end coming across. It's the way he pulled up. He pulled up to it from a dead-speed stop and just threw that ball underhand off-sidearm and got the ball to Jeff Speck.
- 16:06An outstanding athletic move. Really nothing more than an extra point try. The snap, the place, the kick is perfect and the Generals are on the board leading three to nothing with six minutes and 34 seconds to go in the first quarter.
- 16:20You're listening to the New Jersey General's Football Network. So it will be a touchback in quarter number one. A giant stadium in the Meadowlands and we'll be back.
- 16:35First and ten to go for Orlando. They're up to the 40-yard line now and on a neat move by Collier.
- 16:42He completes it to the tight end Bob Nizelik into Generals territory for the first time up to the 47-yard line where it will be first and ten for Orlando.
- 16:52Collier is one of those guys. He's going to give a lot of encouragement. If he gets started and he starts to play well and he completes the pass, he can be dangerous all night long.
- 17:00He's got to stop him right away. The last two times that he had the ball in this series, he's played very well for the quarterback position.
- 17:08It may have been somewhat self-serving, but Lee Corso, the head coach of the Orlando Renegades, said that Reggie Collier is the prototype quarterback of the 80s.
- 17:18Five and a half minutes to go, first quarter, Generals three to nothing, Orlando first and ten to the General, 47. Collier back to throw, going long, down the sidelines for Mickey Flowers and it is intercepted by Gregory Johnson.
- 17:32Johnson returning into the 20s. And he has knocked out of bounds at the 36-yard line of the Generals, first and ten to go for Gregory Johnson, his second interception of the season.
- 17:43And that was a great play. He's the free safety. They tried to hit the receiver deep down the sidelines.
- 17:48He has a clear back. Justin Beat, as he threw the ball up, Johnson came from center field, as he's supposed to, came over perfectly timed and intercepted that ball.
- 17:57The Generals were on their hands a little bit, but two first downs back to back. That interception is costly for the Renegades.
- 18:05Gregory Johnson, his second intercept of the season, and for the Generals' secondary hit is their 12th pickoff of the year.
- 18:12So now the Generals, first and ten to go, at their own 37-yard line in the first quarter, they are marching from right to left.
- 18:19They line up again in the I-4 Bay, and Carthen and Walker are deep. Clarence Collins flanked to the right, pitch out to Herschel running right.
- 18:27Walker turning the corner. Walker out over the 40-yard line, flag on the play. Walker down at the 41-yard line, however, there is a flag at the 49-yard line, away from the flag.
- 18:38That's the back judge who threw the flag.
- 18:40Holding against New Jersey.
- 18:42That was a long way. He's got better eyes than I got. That's a long way to throw that. The back judge threw it way down by the defensive backfield, caught the Jersey offensive line in a holding situation.
- 18:52But going back to that play, again you have to look at the compliment out there between Maurice Carthen and Herschel Walker.
- 18:58Big Mo leading that time and knocked the linebacker completely flat on his back. I mean, that's a tough thing to do from your fullback position, and Mo Carthen does it very, very well.
- 19:06So the Generals now find themselves in a first and 20 predicament back at their own 27-yard line.
- 19:12Walter Bratton flanked to the left and Clarence Collins to the right.
- 19:16In the I-formation now, Carthen and Walker decide to split the backfield.
- 19:20Floating calling signals. Generals lead 3-0 first quarter.
- 19:23Once again now, Walker goes back into the deep I-formation. Hand off to Herschel. He's going to be stacked up behind the line of scrimmage.
- 19:32It was David Graham, the left tackle, along with Scott Hutchinson who's stacked up Herschel for a loss of about 3 on the play.
- 19:39They are going to key on Herschel Walker all night long. They've known what has been effective for the Generals in terms of winning the last ballgame, and it's been running up number 34.
- 19:48You're going to have to look for them. You'll see them coming, glitzing linebackers and secondary people.
- 19:53That would certainly seem like it was set up a play-action pass of some sort.
- 19:57It is second down in a very long 22. Back at the 25 yard line, Carthen and Walker split in the backfield.
- 20:05Bratton flanked to the left, Collins to the right. Flutie back to throw. Flutie with time, throwing over the middle, and he completes it.
- 20:12Out to the 41 yard line where it was Clarence Collins who made the reception.
- 20:18Clarence Collins split to the right side, comes down and does a deep curl, turn-in pattern, gets back to the football, makes the catch.
- 20:25Crucial, crucial catch against five defensive backs. They brought Mike Guest, the nickel, back into the game.
- 20:30Flutie had good protection, stayed in the pocket, and found his man open as he curled to the football.
- 20:34Generals pick up 18 on the play, so it is third and five out to the fairly respectable 42 yard line from the I-formation.
- 20:43Flutie back to throw. Flutie is rolling on a naked bootleg. He has got the first down.
- 20:48He stepped out of bounds at the 48 yard line. He had to get to the 47.
- 20:53That is what Doug Flutie has been doing so well the last three or four ballgames, Charlie.
- 20:57He has not been trying to force his passing situation. He takes advantage of his speed whenever he has an opportunity,
- 21:03and he has made several big plays just like that, getting first down and getting a couple of touchdowns by his running ability.
- 21:09He is a very fast young man when it comes to running with the football.
- 21:12Clarence Collins now flanked out to the right. Carthaden and Walker stack up in the I-formation.
- 21:17Bowers and Speck are the tight ends. And off to Herschel. Give it to Herschel. See Herschel run.
- 21:23Inside the 50, down to about the 48 yard line. Only a four yard pick up that time for Mr. Walker.
- 21:29It will be second down and six. Ron Freeman, the middle linebacker, and Orlando's leading tackler made the play.
- 21:35Only a four yard pick up, but way ahead of schedule as far as the running game goes, but they came with two tight ends that time.
- 21:40Speck and Bowers. That creates a problem for the defense. That forces them to bring that outside linebacker,
- 21:44who is accustomed to playing the split end side up on the line of scrimmage.
- 21:47General second down and six at the Orlando 48. And again the I-formation, and once again Speck and Bowers on the offensive line as tight ends.
- 21:56And off to Moe Carth on the up back in the I. Moe picks up maybe two yards on the play as Freeman and Graham.
- 22:03Freeman, the middle linebacker, Graham, the left tackle, make the play.
- 22:06Just the nature of their defensive line, having four down defensive linemen versus the usual three down defensive linemen is going to make it tougher for Maurice Codden to run the football from his full back position.
- 22:16They're going to give it to him several times tonight just to keep that defense on us, but the effectiveness is going to come from Herschel Walker from the I-back position where he gets a better read of the offensive lineman's block.
- 22:26Broughton and Collins now flank out to the left side.
- 22:30Carthen and Walker in the I-formation on third down and four for the Generals at the Orlando 46.
- 22:36Flutie back to throw, rolling left, stops, looking to get rid of it. He does sideline incomplete. He threw it out of bounds. His intended receiver on paper at any rate was Clarence Collins.
- 22:46But Flutie is doing something now over the last three or four weeks that he was unable to do the first three or four weeks, and that is throw it out of bounds and get out of trouble.
- 22:53Absolutely, absolutely. He's done that well. Remembering back to when the team would get in trouble, it was when Doug would try and force the situation, make the completion happen when there was action coverage downfield.
- 23:04That time again he threw it out of bounds and that's a step of maturity as far as I'm concerned about Doug Flutie.
- 23:09Fourth and four for New Jersey, Rick Partridge averaging 39 yards per punt. Standing back in his own 40 yard line, the line of scrimmage is the Orlando 46.
- 23:19Victor Jackson standing in his 10 yard line, two hour left. A minute 58 to go, first quarter, Generals lead 3-0.
- 23:27Awaiting the snap from the long snapper Russ Mitchell and the Generals have taken too much time. I guess they were hoping that perhaps Orlando would jump the gun. They did not.
- 23:35And so the delay of game penalty and so at this point really the difference between fourth and four and fourth and nine is academic.
- 23:42It really doesn't make that much difference considering where the ball is placed and now it's going to be almost on the 50 yard line. He can get a 45 yard punt out if he's doing a good job of punting right now.
- 23:52And it'll put the Generals in pretty good field position if they get the coverage they expect out of this punt team.
- 23:57Wind isn't much of a factor down there is it Bob?
- 23:59None at all Charlie. It's a perfectly cool night and it is no wind at all.
- 24:03Rick Partridge now will punt it away one more time standing back in his own 35 yard line.
- 24:10And it looked like Orlando may have jumped the gun that time but no flag.
- 24:14Victor Jackson fielding the ball at the 15 yard line, cutting up the middle and he brought down at the 25 yard line.
- 24:21Frank Matty is in on the tackle for New Jersey. We have a break in the action with a minute and 35 seconds to go and quarter number one at Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands.
- 24:30Whereas the Generals lead the Orlando Renegades 3-0. We'll be back on the New Jersey Generals football network.
- 24:37What is it about Alfa Romeo that has commanded the loyalty of four generations of Europe's and now America's best families?
- 24:45Can it be the excitement of a car that devours a mile in less than 30 seconds?
- 24:51Can it be the sumptuous Italian self-indulgence that Alfa Romeo's radiates?
- 24:56Can it be the warranties for Alfa including an optional six year, 60,000 mile dealer warranty?
- 25:03Yes it is all this and something more the rich would rather you didn't know.
- 25:08Alfa Romeo is a bargain. There is an Alfa for instance for the scandalously low price of $13,495 and none is higher than $20,000.
- 25:20Now the aristocracy may not be happy to see you at their Alfa Romeo dealer but you walk right in.
- 25:27And if anyone should ask, tell them you want one of these toys for yourself on this shopper's day off.
- 25:3557, the only thing the Indians need are the guards.
- 25:43The Renegades break the huddle as first and 10 to go at their own 25 yard line.
- 25:50They line up in the I-formation with Bledsoe the deep back and they end up as Curtis Bledsoe.
- 25:54And he gets to the line of scrimmage and that is about all she wrote as Kyle Borland once again in on the play for New Jersey.
- 26:01And they had a miscue out there from their offensive center.
- 26:04He went to go fire straight ahead and he feet slipped up from underneath him and actually the running back tripped over the top of his offensive center as well as Borland getting him.
- 26:12Again you come back to Borland though. He's made outstanding contribution since he's been put in there in place of John Joyce.
- 26:18He's making himself feel as if he felt like a real football player for the general's defense.
- 26:22He killed the generals the first two years when we were visiting them in Michigan.
- 26:26Here's Collier back to throw and he just missed the tight end Nizalek at the 34 yard line.
- 26:31Danelle Daniel was in on the play defensively so it'll be third down and nine at the 26 yard line.
- 26:37If you have just joined us and missed the news about the big USFL powwow today in Teaneck, New Jersey, the league reaffirmed its position.
- 26:45We'll be moving to the fall of 1986. John Bassett and the Tampa Bay Bandits have opted to leave the USFL at the conclusion of this season and apparently go their own way.
- 26:56But you know if it's only Tampa Bay you know that the Bandits are guaranteed a playoff spot next year.
- 27:02Third and nine at the 26 Collier back to throw throwing it and completing it to Joey Walters who is grabbed upside the head by Jerry Holmes and brought down ruthlessly at the 39 yard line.
- 27:13A pick up of 13 on the play. First and 10 to go for the Orlando Renegades at the 39 yard line.
- 27:19Their own 39. That will likely be the last play of the first quarter with the clock running 20 seconds remaining.
- 27:25They came out at five with five receivers that time. Collier stayed in the pocket, got a good rush but got decent protection and waited for Walters to come underneath the receivers.
- 27:34They cleared out the area man for man coverage with Jerry Holmes on his back.
- 27:37I misspoke. This will be the last play of the quarter. Clock running three two one and Collier is back to throw.
- 27:44Throwing quickly sideline for Nisalik. He completes it and Nisalik is wrestled out of bounds at the 49 yard line of New Jersey where the first quarter has come to an end.
- 27:54With the Generals leading the Orlando Renegades three to nothing at Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands and will be back.
- 28:02Hey fans if you haven't been out to see Doug Flutie, the record breaking Herschel Walker and the rest of the playoff Hungry Generals, here's what's coming at you next.
- 28:09Sunday May 12th is Mother's Day and at 2.30pm it's Star Wars USFL style with the 84 champion Baltimore Stars invading Giants Stadium with Chuck Fusina and Calvin Bryant.
- 28:20Don't forget to bring Mom, it's her day. On Saturday night June 1st, 7 o'clock the Generals host the Memphis Showboats and the USFL's number one passer Walter Lewis.
- 28:29Also two lucky couples will win round trip airfare compliments of Pan Am by coming in their best European costume from France, England, Germany or Italy.
- 28:39I know I won't want to miss that. Gates open at 5.30 and concession stands open early too.
- 28:44Stadium club opens for members at 4.30 so come out and enjoy dinner or a snack and see some great action.
- 28:49June 1st, Saturday night at 7 the Generals and the Memphis Showboats. Advanced sales of Ticketron outlets are at the Betterlands Arena box office Monday through Saturday from 10 to 6.
- 28:59Sundays from noon to 5 are called 935-3900. Day of game tickets on sale at Giants Stadium. Ticket windows three hours before game time. Come on out, the Generals want you.
- 29:10Well the first quarter is in the books and the Generals have a three to nothing lead. It was a fairly efficient first quarter for Herschel Walker.
- 29:21Seven carries, 66 yards including his first run of the ballgame which was a nifty 32 yarder.
- 29:29Orlando, only 73 yards of offense in the first quarter, 66 in the air, seven on the ground. Generals had 76 yards of rushing, 66 from Walker, 22 yards in the air courtesy of Doug Flutie.
- 29:46Orlando's passing game again comes back to those intermediate zone passes. The ones that not the flat pass and not the deep step are out there where the linebackers are.
- 29:55Every team we've seen play against the Generals have had some success in this particular area. And again coming back to this quarterback Reggie Collier, you can't let him get going, get his head of steam underneath him.
- 30:07Get him confident because he can hurt you if he has his game on.
- 30:11They particularly use their tight ends very effectively that first quarter. We might see more of it. A short, intermediate sideline cut working on Danel Daniel playing at strong safety for the injured John Preston.
- 30:22So it is first and 10 to go for the Orlando Renegades with the ball of the General, 49 yard line. Hand off to Curtis Bledsoe straight ahead for maybe three yards to the 47. Pick up a, let's call it three, second down and seven yards to go.
- 30:38The Generals obviously are thinking run when they line up on that first down, first down on defense because they've got their both linebackers up on the line of scrimmage on the outside linebackers and the inside linebackers playing very tight.
- 30:50So what we're really looking at is almost effectively a seven man line to stop that run and they've been stopping it pretty well on first down situation.
- 30:57Second and eighth they call it at the 48 yard line of New Jersey with Bledsoe the single setback. Echols and Nisalick two tight ends. Hand off to Bledsoe straight ahead and Bledsoe picks up maybe two more yards to the 46 where it'll be third down and six yards to go.
- 31:12Very interesting call on second and long. Now they're going to come up with a third and about six yards to go. The Generals come with a fifth defensive back into the game. That's Terry Daniels.
- 31:20Be interesting to see how they attack it. They've come to the tight end. They've come to the wide receiver. Joey Walters coming underneath the coverage with five receivers out.
- 31:29And there will be four wide outs employed by Lee Corso on this play. Walter Smith flowers and Parrish third down a long five at the 45 yard line. Collier lines up in the shotgun formation with Parrish in motion to the near side.
- 31:44Collier back to throw. Being rushed. Throwing over the middle completing it to Walters at the 41 yard line. We'll see where they mark the ball.
- 31:53Actually they're going to mark it all the way to the 39 yard line where it'll be first and 10 for the Renegades. Again the short time pattern as Dave mentioned.
- 32:01The short time pattern where the receiver just turns back the ball is they're very hard to defend against and also with receivers like Walters they're very quick to get into the scene.
- 32:09They're just controlling the football with short control passing game. Henry Odom checks into the running back position for the Renegades. He's five nine two oh five from South Carolina State.
- 32:19He joins Curtis Bledsoe. They're splitting the backfield first and 10 at the 39 yard line. And now Bledsoe lines up as a deep back in the eye formation.
- 32:28Hand off to Odom the up back and he crawls along the ground. Odom picked up only one on the play second and nine at the 38. Collier back to throw. Stopping throwing.
- 32:39It is intercepted by Danel Daniel who spins at the 40. And some more on the outside. Danel Daniel may go all the way.
- 32:49Daniel is run out of bounds at the 10 yard line.
- 32:59What a bad throw by Reggie Collier the quarterback. The intended receiver never even saw the football. It was thrown completely behind him. Danel Daniel takes the ball.
- 33:09Starts up to his right. Saw the open area on the left hand side and got some help going downfield. Got it all the way down to the seven yard line before the Renegades finally dropped him.
- 33:19But it was just plain a bad throw by Collier the quarterback. When he's good he's good and when he's bad he's not so great.
- 33:26But he's bad he's off. First in goal for the generals of the eight on a 58 yard interception return by Danel Daniel.
- 33:34That's two on the nine.
- 33:37Clarence Collins flank to the right. Generals of the eye formation. Hand off to Herschel running right.
- 33:43Cutting at the five. Herschel is inside the five to the three yard line. A pick up of five yards for Walker. Freeman and Jackson combine on the tackle.
- 33:51Again Sam Bauer is on the corner with Maurice Carthon blocking and that turns out to be the off tackle play. That's just a slant off tackle and Herschel got a great block in his tight end and full back.
- 34:01And he's looking down at second and three. Sam Bauer is bigger than most offensive linemen. He's 257 pounds and doing a real fine job out there tonight blocking from that tight end position.
- 34:13All right here are the generals now second in goal at the three again in the eye formation. Hand off to Herschel this time he's running left cutting right and he's brought down at the line of scrimmage.
- 34:22Atkins and Freeman the two linebackers make the tackle. And they're blitzing the linebackers they're gambling down here. They came with 10 men.
- 34:29George the cornerback was out here on the wide receiver Collins everybody else was up and blitzing. They have to see a little play action pass in here. Look for your tight end in the end zone.
- 34:37They're going to do that Bob until the generals can hurt him on that blitz when they're going to blitz and the generals would go into a play action pass or have some sort of bootleg and over.
- 34:45They're going to blitz Herschel Walker and try and stop him tonight. Generals now third in goal at the four yard line marching from left to right lining up in the eye formation including he is going to roll it.
- 34:58Looking to turn the corner at the team. He's in the team.
- 35:15He was stopped in his own 10 yard line made a complete one eighty through the ball in the air. It was Sam Vow to went high into the air for the touchdown. Oh what a play by Doug Flutie. How would you like to be the defensive coordinator trying to find that one.
- 35:30How would you like to be the play by playing as we're trying to describe it. Now here's Ruzak for the extra point try with partridge to hold in the step the place to kick is good. And the general's lead 10 to nothing with 10 minutes and 42 seconds to go in the first half.
- 35:48We're a giant stadium in the Meadowlands and we'll be back. Now's the time to change your motor oil to protect your engine. - 36:55It's not bad David. Hurry. You sound like you live. What. I am telling you. That's too late. We saw him get the first down here running with the football and that particular play there. Just an outstanding effort by radio play by play guys nightmare trying to describe the pirouettes that he pulls off game in and game out.
- 37:20Well he did it again and powers came down with a touchdown pass Ergo the general's 10 and the run against nothing is Ruzek makes his way toward the football. It's a high end over and kick the Jerry Parish will field at his own five yard line far side of the field.
- 37:34Parish to the 10 and he will not even make the 20 yard line. He is muscle down at the 17 and in on the tackle was Jim Dumont or New Jersey Dumont the reserve linebacker from Rutgers. You know we talk about that they throw different words out in sports and one thing in football and Dave knows it well as the word intensity and there is an intensity about this general football team especially on their specialty teams.
- 37:58That really is exciting. They come down they cover and they're hitting they're looking to get tackles and looking to make gang tackles and it's sort of filters through the whole football team when you're especially teams hit like that and play up everybody else combines it falls in line.
- 38:10It always does Bobby you can tell it especially on a special team the way they start the football game and the way they continue to cover those punts and kickoff kickoff return to return.
- 38:19That's the mark of an intense football team. Walt Michael certainly has this football team. The generals here tonight ready to go 10 days off. They needed to 10 days midseason break but to get them back the way they're performing now it's a mark of a good coach.
- 38:33We've always said that and I've watched a lot of football teams without come back after a win like they had against Memphis and then all of a sudden a 10 day layoff come back a little bit flat.
- 38:43In this case right here they are superior to the Orlando Renegade on paper and they're certainly superior in their team play tonight. The generals over the last month really immediately following the loss in Arizona have played as fine a football as this organization has ever played and that includes their 14 and 4 season of a year ago.
- 39:01The generals have really come into their own into a fine football organization.
- 39:06Joey Walters flank to the left of Jackie Flowers to the right for Orlando first and 10 at their own 17 Collier rolling throwing on the run and he completes it to Henry Odom who is wrestled down at the 25 yard line by Jerry Holmes a pickup of eight on the play.
- 39:22It'll be second down and two yards to go. You watch Jerry Holmes make the tackles a lot different when he makes the tackle and he hits them with his shoulder.
- 39:29If you had a John Preston out there one on one he would have ripped his head right through the ball up through and tried to force the fumble Jerry Holmes outstanding coverage man.
- 39:38He's not really a vicious tackler like a Johnny Preston is but he certainly does a fine job covering the receivers. They called it a game of nine.
- 39:45So let's say a second and one at the 26 yard line single setback is Curtis Bledsoe to tight ends employed in this play.
- 39:54And it looks like the generals may have in fact jumped the gun. It looked like Emmanuel Weaver.
- 39:59Emmanuel from his nose tackle position. Now you know he can move a little bit but he's got to be back across the line when the ball is snapped.
- 40:05But that time he bumped helmets with the offensive center. So they're going to call it against the general.
- 40:10Hold on hold on. Wait a minute. He was drawn offside Charlie. I saw him hit it.
- 40:14That's what it is believe it or not. They're going to call it on the center who sort of lean back.
- 40:20Mark Fisher second year man from Notre Dame Jerry Fowlton.
- 40:27Did he OK. He's out there arguing now we're going to have a little talking about it but Reggie you're going to lose.
- 40:34Mark Fisher is none too pleased by the call. He is being restrained.
- 40:39So the second down and six well at the 21 yard line when you're two and seven you frustration to sit in.
- 40:46So Orlando has played better of late. They've won two of their last three having knocked off Memphis and Arizona.
- 40:54Let's go and out of our in the backfield now and they are split.
- 40:59Walters flank to the left and Jackie Flowers to the right second and six Orlando at their own 21 yard line.
- 41:05And now Joey Walters jumped the gun on Jerry Hall.
- 41:08And there's a reason for that Jerry Holmes not only gets up and plays in your face but he does a lot of talking to you along the way.
- 41:13I'm sure he was talking that time and he fell for it.
- 41:16Now they're not talking about Reagan's trip to Europe. What are they talking about.
- 41:20They were talking about the negotiations in the neck. I'm sure.
- 41:24Anyway the big thing for the generals tonight and we know it and we talked about it early and that is they've got to keep the pressure on themselves.
- 41:31There's no way Orlando can beat him if they keep the pressure on themselves.
- 41:34And the only way they can do that is everybody plays the game defense offense special teams.
- 41:39So now from second and wanted second and 11 for Orlando all the way back to their own 16 yard line.
- 41:45Let's show the single setback a wing to the right flankers to the left into the right.
- 41:49Oh you're back to throw and the ball is tipped into the air by Freddie Gilbert and nearly picked off by Jerry.
- 41:57That's it. It'll be third and eleven at the 16.
- 41:59That's the closest to anybody on a defensive line has gotten to Reggie Kyle the quarterback and it was big old Freddie Gilbert coming into his own.
- 42:07You know you say this about this football team Charlie.
- 42:09There's a lot of guys that are progressing as this season goes on and they're a good football team now.
- 42:14But if they keep that progression going at certain positions they're going to be a much better football team by the year's end.
- 42:19Third down and eleven for the renegades at their own 16 yard line for wide receivers.
- 42:25Jackie Flowers Jerry Parrish Joy Walters and Jeff Smith.
- 42:29And here's Collier on a little pitch out to Curtis Bledsoe and Bledsoe is run out of bounds at the 21 yard line a pick up a five.
- 42:37It'll be fourth down and six to go.
- 42:39It was Armstrong who came up from his three safety position to run Bledsoe out of bounds.
- 42:44And so now for the second time tonight Greg Tater trots onto the field to put it away.
- 42:49He is a second leading putter in the USFL averaging 42 and a half yards for funny.
- 42:55Got off a 45 yarder in his first try in the first quarter standing back in his own 36 yard line anticipating the punt from catered his Danny Knight.
- 43:05You may remember Greg cater with the Buffalo Bills good snap from center and cater with a high but short punt that night will fair catch at his own 34 yard line.
- 43:16Generals with excellent field position with nine fifty two to go in the first half first and ten at their own 34 yard line.
- 43:26General's 10 and Orlando no score.
- 43:28We're a giant stadium in the middle lands and we'll be back on the New Jersey General's football network.
- 43:52The boardwalk in Atlantic City is higher than ever.
- 44:00Trump Plaza Hotel Casino rising above the sea.
- 44:06It stimulates like nothing you've ever experienced.
- 44:15And best of all this place is right in the center of the action.
- 44:24Come see for yourself.
- 44:27Trump Plaza.
- 44:30It's Atlantic City centerpiece.
- 44:40WMCA New York.
- 44:44Generals first intended their own 34 floating back to throw a throws for Walker over the middle and completes it to the 43 yard line where Ron Freeman the middle linebacker made the tackle.
- 44:56General's fall short of the first down by a couple of yards second down and two to go.
- 45:00What they did that time was they just decided on first down to get away from that rushing linebackers and linemen against the run and they just dropped back and dumped the ball off the hush a lot of back.
- 45:08So the generals now second and two lining up in the eye from their own 42 yard line.
- 45:14Flutie calling signals flankers to the left and to the right and off to Herschel running right turning the corner at the 40.
- 45:20He is run out of bounds at the 45 yard line.
- 45:24That's good for the first down for Walker.
- 45:26Victor Jackson ran Walker out of bounds simply not giving Herschel any angle.
- 45:30Absolutely wasn't given Herschel any angle.
- 45:32I guess he can stop as fast as he can run because he was coming full speed towards the bench and just put his brakes on him.
- 45:38But he got the first down a big play by Herschel.
- 45:40But going back to what Bob said before having that pass on the first down was a change in the and the general's direction of their strategy.
- 45:48Walker now 10 carries 74 yards.
- 45:51Generals first and 10 from their own 45 yard line.
- 45:54Walker on a wing to the left floating back to throw throwing over the middle for Sam Bowers is complete.
- 45:58And Bowers is brought down at the 25 yard line of Orlando by Jeff George and Sam Bowers.
- 46:04Sam Bowers is having an outstanding night at the running position when he's blocking from the tight end spot as well as catching the football.
- 46:13He caught that touchdown at miraculous fluted touchdown that we saw up here going into the same direction.
- 46:18But on this particular play he found the open area of the zone pass zone coverage and Flutie had nice touch getting the football to him.
- 46:25And Sam brought it down for the big game.
- 46:27Jeff Speck is power as a breather.
- 46:29Generals first and 10 at the Orlando 25 lining up in the eye for me.
- 46:34Flutie hands to her off right tackle.
- 46:36Herschel picked up a couple down to the 23.
- 46:39It'll be second down and a Ron Freeman who is the leading tackler with a place called Pittsburgh State.
- 46:44And he made the tack.
- 46:45That's in Kansas Charlie.
- 46:47Not too far from Bradley.
- 46:49You know what we were watching last year.
- 46:54Watching Jeff Speck come on and it started this year Jeff back come on as being sort of like a alternate tight end.
- 46:59But we really see a difference now with Jeff Speck.
- 47:01He's definitely the number two tight end.
- 47:03Sam Bowers has come a long way since last year and certainly throughout this year.
- 47:07We are pleased to announce the arrival of the wretched wave once again here at Giants game.
- 47:13Second and nine for the generals of the 24 of Orlando.
- 47:16Flutie back to throw.
- 47:17Flutie being rushed.
- 47:18Flutie being sacked at the 34 yard line.
- 47:21A loss of 10 as Scott Hutchinson the right hand record his third sack of the season.
- 47:26That's the second time that Doug Mackie number 73 in a left offensive tackle has got in a situation with Scott Hutchinson.
- 47:34Hutchinson number 66 brushes the patcher very well.
- 47:37He's pretty quick.
- 47:38And when Doug Mackie's got to get fundamentally sound if he's going to protect Doug Flutie's backside the rest of this night because obviously Hutchinson seems to have found a weakness in Doug Mackie's blocking style.
- 47:49Generals now in the shotgun on third and 18 back at the Orlando 33 yard line.
- 47:54Flutie back to throw.
- 47:56Flutie with time.
- 47:57Throwing long in the end zone for Bradton incomplete.
- 48:00But there is a flag on the play back at the 50 yard line.
- 48:04And I would suspect that Doug Mackie did a fair share of holding.
- 48:07And here comes the official's call.
- 48:10But you know what that was Charlie.
- 48:12Same situation I talked about where this.
- 48:15Okay they didn't call it.
- 48:19They didn't announce it over the loudspeaker but it was Doug Mackie got caught for holding that same Scott Hutchinson number 66.
- 48:25Like I said before he's got Doug Mackie figured out and Mackie's got to get fundamentally sound if he's going to block and protect because he's very important.
- 48:32Left offensive tackle protects the backside of a right handed quarterback with Doug Flutie.
- 48:36Here's Roger Ruzek who's about to attempt a 50 yard field goal something he has not tried from this distance all year.
- 48:46He's four of six make it five of seven on the season.
- 48:50Partridge the holder hash mark to the right.
- 48:53Mitchell the snapper.
- 48:54The place the kick is on its way.
- 48:56It is up.
- 48:57It is short.
- 49:00It was about a yard short but it was right on target.
- 49:03Still the generals hold a 10 to nothing lead with six minutes and 23 seconds to go in the first half at Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands.
- 49:11We'll be back.
- 49:20Happy birthday Thunderbird.

- 50:11Charlie Steiner along with Dave Herman and Bob Cassiola from Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands.
- 50:16Six minutes and 23 seconds ago first half a half that's been thoroughly enjoyed by the generals they lead 10 to nothing.
- 50:22Herschel Walker already on the evening as 11 carries for 75 yards.
- 50:27Just another day at the office.
- 50:28Just another day at the office.
- 50:29But even though they're ahead 10 to nothing they haven't been as consistent tonight playing against these Orlando Renegades as they were last week against Memphis.
- 50:37They've had ups and downs but fortunately they're ahead 10 to nothing.
- 50:40Renegades first and 10 for their own 33 lining up in the I formation handoff to Odom the up back and Odom to the 34 yard line where he is met head on by Emmanuel Weaver.
- 50:50A pick up of one on the play it'll be second down and nine to go.
- 50:53Great job Emmanuel Weaver he's really working over the center.
- 50:56Mark Fisher and doing a nice job of controlling that middle area and what the Renegades are trying to do is on the early down maybe just get three four yards come up third and short and then go to the control passing game.
- 51:06They stayed with that most of the evening this far with Tom Woodland recuperating from knee surgery.
- 51:11Emmanuel Weaver has taken over the starting job at that nose position on second and nine at the 35 handoff to Curtis Bledsoe straight ahead.
- 51:19He has got some yardage and he's got a first down all the way out to the 44 yard line of Orlando where Maurice Clemens and Jerry Holmes made the tackle.
- 51:27Let's take a 10 second time out now for station identification on the New Jersey General's radio network.
- 51:3357
- 51:36I believe in seeing the earth and God.
- 51:44First and 10 for Orlando marching from right to left and this is second quarter they trail 10 to nothing at their own 44 yard line Bledsoe the single setback.
- 51:53And off the blitz straight ahead and he gets maybe a couple of yards to the 46 second down and eight and once again a manual Weaver along with Bobby Lee a ball in on the tack.
- 52:03You mentioned a manual Weaver taking over from Tom Woodland when he got hurt.
- 52:06You know people that play like that tend to make these injuries that well very fast.
- 52:11He's feeling much better.
- 52:13He's doing a good job out there.
- 52:14He man no weaver and he gets in the lobby he's so big and strong compared to the offensive center the center only weighs 248 pounds Mark Fisher and a man who weaver's much bigger than that and he's very active also.
- 52:25So when he's on his game like he is tonight he's very effective weaver is six four and two eighty South Carolina second and eight at the forty six Orlando backfield is like higher back to throw higher with time throwing
- 52:37and completing it to get like a tight end who is pumped by Jerry Holmes at the general 47 yard line about a yard short of the first down again they come to the tight end on the short quick turnout pattern from his tight end position tough to cover that because the strong safety has to give him a little room as he comes off the line of scrimmage he just breaks away from it's going to be third and short.
- 52:57We would anticipate them running up inside here to try and get their first down about the best thing you can do in that situation Bob is make sure that guy receiving the football not the price but get the little bump here and there and I get it as hard as you can and making understand that every time he catches the ball it's going to be the same situation.
- 53:13Get their attention get their attention.
- 53:15Third and two at the forty seven yard line and off to Odom straight ahead.
- 53:19He's not going to make it.
- 53:20He didn't get it.
- 53:21One of the glaring deficiencies of this Orlando team is they don't have a running back much over 200 pounds.
- 53:27They've got clad as 206 out of 205 blood so it's 210 if that if and so now they will have a measurement the line of scrimmage is the general forty six yard line.
- 53:39It depends really on where they marked the ball.
- 53:42It's going to be very close.
- 53:44Isn't that always the truth.
- 53:45Right foot left right foot left foot.
- 53:48And it was the left foot because they're about six inches short of the first down.
- 53:53Well in this situation here Bob what do you do.
- 53:55I think I was going to go for it.
- 53:57He's won two games this year.
- 53:59I think he's going to go for it.
- 54:01He's on a roll.
- 54:02He's on a roll.
- 54:03Well I'm sure he's thinking right now he's 10 nothing in the second quarter he's staying close enough that he's still in his ball game.
- 54:08So I'll tell you one thing.
- 54:09The field position is not all that bad.
- 54:11They don't think.
- 54:12I'll tell you one thing.
- 54:13You look at the talent on his side of the field versus talent on the other side of the field.
- 54:15You can't really judge his coaching ability by what the one and lost record is.
- 54:19Part of it is certainly but he just doesn't have a lot of good football players on the field.
- 54:23You got to be you got to be very ready here for Reggie Collier himself carrying the football.
- 54:27He is quick.
- 54:28He hasn't really run with the ball tonight.
- 54:29This is a perfect situation for him either to get it himself or to come out on some kind of a play action.
- 54:34Well he needs about six inches on the play.
- 54:37Fourth and inches at the general forty six yard line.
- 54:40Collier I don't think he got it.
- 54:42I don't think he got it.
- 54:43Again they mark it back farther.
- 54:45Lock it and weaver in on the tackle.
- 54:48It will all depend on the mark of the ball.
- 54:51Exactly.
- 54:52Right foot or left foot.
- 54:53I don't know.
- 54:55The generals are optimistic.
- 54:56That's for sure.
- 54:57All the general's offensive unit is coming on the field.
- 54:59They needed six inches.
- 55:00It looks like they got a minus six.
- 55:03Are they going to measure it?
- 55:04He's going to measure it and he should.
- 55:06Any coach should insist on a measurement here.
- 55:08Just don't let them walk off the field.
- 55:13Reggie Collier did not get a good start when the ball was snapped.
- 55:17He almost took a step backwards before he went forward and that would be a costed situation.
- 55:22If he didn't get it he could probably go back and say hey Reggie next time forward baby and get the first down.
- 55:27He didn't get a good start.
- 55:28His finish was no picnic either.
- 55:29There it is.
- 55:30He didn't get it.
- 55:31The general's defense is hell.
- 55:32How about that?
- 55:33A glimmer of inches.
- 55:34Who said that?
- 55:35How can you lose yardage on a quarterback's sneak?
- 55:37Well the federals have just found out.
- 55:40We have a break in the action.
- 55:413-12 to go.
- 55:42First half.
- 55:43General's 10.
- 55:44Orlando no score.
- 55:45We're a giant stadium in the middlelands and we'll be back on the New Jersey General's football network.
- 55:51Now are you concerned about the cost of heating or cooling your home?
- 55:54Now if you are, PSE&G, Public Service Electric and Gas Company of New Jersey has a solution for you.
- 56:00PSE&G will send an energy specialist to check out your home from basement to attic to look for energy leaks.
- 56:06You'll then receive a computerized report on exactly where your home is losing energy and what you can do about it.
- 56:11The cost of the service is only $15.
- 56:13With the report you also receive a free energy savings kit so you can begin to stop those energy leaks right now.
- 56:19Call the PSE&G Energy Conservation Center toll free at 1-800-854-4444 and ask about the home energy survey.
- 56:27And look for more information about the survey in this month's public service mailing.
- 56:31Remember the number to call is 1-800-854-4444. 1-800-854-4444.
- 56:3957, tell me you've been seeing me and you've gone.
- 56:47General's first and 10 to go at their own 46 yard line.
- 56:52Leading 10 to nothing with three minutes to go first half.
- 56:55Walker and Carthens split in the backfield as Flutie is back to throw.
- 56:58Flutie has time, throwing long over the middle and it is nearly intercepted.
- 57:02Flutie overthrew Clarence Collins and Jeff George and Victor Jackson were both in the neighborhood to pick it off and it fell in complete.
- 57:09The key there was Charlie that he did overthrow the football because the receiver had the area.
- 57:14He found the open area in the zone, he found it and the ball was overthrown and instead of him tipping it down he tipped it up and almost got it intercepted.
- 57:21So that was not a bad throw by Doug Flutie. In a sense he tried to force it, he just threw it high.
- 57:25Second and 10 for New Jersey at their own 46, 2-51 to go in the half.
- 57:30Lining up in the I-formation, Carthen and Walker in the backfield.
- 57:33Flutie calling signals with Collins flank to the right.
- 57:37Prouten to the left. Flutie rolling right, stopping, now running.
- 57:41Now he's going to run it out of bounds. No, he takes a powder at the 49 yard line.
- 57:45He went down on his own, kind of slid into second base if you will.
- 57:49Kelvin Atkins put on the finishing touch. A pick up of about 5 on the play, it'll be third down and 5 at the Orlando 49.
- 57:56And that's the versatility of the offense now. Flutie came out, that was a cold clear sprint out.
- 58:00And he was coming on the corner to throw the football, got a good block again on the corner by Maurice Carthon which gave him a chance to get up field.
- 58:06When he saw his receivers covered he tucked it in and got himself 4 yards.
- 58:10The latest on the USFL meetings today, we have an interview with Harry Usher, the commissioner of the USFL, coming at you at halftime.
- 58:18He's got a third and 5 for the generals of the Orlando 49 from the shotgun, Flutie back to throw.
- 58:23Throwing over the middle, completely gets to Walker and Walker's got the first down at the 41 yard line.
- 58:28And a flag on the play after the play, it looked like a face mask against Orlando.
- 58:32It really did look like a face mask, I think that's what they're going to call it, but heads up to the quarterback.
- 58:38Heads up to, heads up play by Doug Flutie, the quarterback, getting the ball to Herschel Walker.
- 58:43Of course Herschel being in the league and playing as a receiver as much as he has this year,
- 58:48knew exactly where to go for that first down and got it.
- 58:51And we have a break in the action, the 2 minute warning has arrived.
- 58:54Generals with the ball, first and 10 in the Orlando 35, leading 10 to nothing.
- 58:59We're at Giants Stadium in the Middlelands and we'll come right back.

- 59:59Two minutes to go here in the first half.
- 1:00:05General's lead 10 to nothing as you're listening to us on the General's radio network over WMCA in New York and WMRE in Boston, Massachusetts.
- 1:00:14General's 10 to nothing and Boston's native son, actually Natick's native son, Doug Flutie is having a fairly decent game today.
- 1:00:21Yes he is. Six out of ten for 71 yards and one fantastic touchdown.
- 1:00:26Oh I'll tell you, he did a dipsy doodle. He would have made the Isley brothers proud. He had some moves.
- 1:00:3210 to nothing, General's two minutes to go, first and ten at the Orlando 35.
- 1:00:37Out of the I-4 Nation, Flutie calling signals, handing to Herschel running left, turning the corner, Walker inside the 30, down to about the 27 yard line, pick up a lead on the play.
- 1:00:48Harrell Randolph, the left side linebacker, made the tackle for the Renegades.
- 1:00:51Very good call. They were anticipating with two minutes to pass, the Generals are going to go now without a huddle, they're just going to keep the ball on the ground wall.
- 1:00:57Michael would like nothing more than to come away with some points here before the half.
- 1:01:01Nothing like a 17 point halftime cushion. General's currently lead at 10 to nothing. Walker and Carson split in the backfield, Flutie back to throw.
- 1:01:08Flutie has time, now he's going to run with it. Flutie's going to turn the corner, 30, 25, 20 and he's going to run out of bounds at the 15 yard line.
- 1:01:15And a first down as Flutie picks up 13 on the play. And he's been doing a lot of straight drop back passing from the normal set of the quarterback underneath the center.
- 1:01:24And when he gets back and those ends just come in a little tight on him, he's so quick he bounces outside.
- 1:01:29The cover has run off with the receivers and Doug Flutie is magic.
- 1:01:33You know one of the things we haven't seen Bob is a play action pass here tonight by the Generals.
- 1:01:37It would seem like that would be a natural play, natural pass play to call, but we haven't seen it.
- 1:01:42He's been pretty effective and when he does see the coverage as strong as this, takes off and runs and gets some yardage.
- 1:01:47Collins flying to the left, Broughton to the right, hand off to Walker running right. Walker inside the 10, inside the 5 yard line.
- 1:01:53Walker's got the first down. And he ran over Victor Jackson, the free safety. When the free safety's got to come up and make the tackle on your tail back, you've made yardage.
- 1:02:01How many carries is that for Walker tonight? That is that 12 carries for 93 yards.
- 1:02:05I'll go back to what I said about Herschel Walker. It's just like another day at the office we said this Charlie, when he runs the football and he seems like he gets stronger and stronger.
- 1:02:14When you're trying to bring him down, it takes his toll.
- 1:02:16Walt Michael said somebody gets hurt out there when Herschel carries the football and it's not Herschel.
- 1:02:21He is clearly a punishing runner.
- 1:02:23Generals first and goal at the Orlando 4. Lining up in the eye, hand off to guess who? Walker inside.
- 1:02:29It's loose in the end zone and it is recovered by Orlando's Harold Randolph, the 4 year linebacker from East Carolina.
- 1:02:37That is something we almost never see. That's Walker bubbling the football, but that time it happened.
- 1:02:42I think that's twice this season, isn't it? Twice this season and that was a very costly touchdown.
- 1:02:47Obviously Walt was trying to get some points on the board. They were the offensive line. Everybody was working on it, including Herschel Walker.
- 1:02:52Something like that is going to happen when you carry the football as many times as Herschel Walker does. You're going to cough it up. I don't care who you are. You're going to cough it up once in a while.
- 1:03:00It's just unfortunate that it happened right when it did.
- 1:03:0251 seconds to go, first half. Generals will probably go into the locker room with a 10 to nothing lead.
- 1:03:08Somewhat disappointed, but that's got to boy the spirits of the Orlando Renegades.
- 1:03:13I was thinking wood boy the spirits. If there's any spirits to boy out there.
- 1:03:16They're playing pretty spirited. They're just outmanned. There's no question about it. The Generals have a better lineup when you look at it on paper.
- 1:03:24Man for man, team for team. The Generals are a better football team.
- 1:03:28These are the Washington Federals from a year ago. They're getting better, but by and large the nucleus of this team was the Federals from a year ago.
- 1:03:34First and 10 Orlando on their own 20. How you're back to throw, how you're throwing on the run.
- 1:03:39He completes it to Nisalik, the tight end. He's running out of bounds at the 27 yard line by Kerry Justin. A pick up of seven on the play.
- 1:03:46It'll be second down and three to go. 45 seconds remain in the half. Orlando has two timeouts at his disposal.
- 1:03:53Generals have come with it naturally with the nickel back. They've got their defensive backs in the game. They're willing to give them that short pass again.
- 1:03:59Nisalik got out of bounds in time with 45 seconds on the clock. There's a long way from home.
- 1:04:04And again, while Michaels wants to keep him at 10-0 if he can, Lee Corso is calling a timeout. He wants to talk it over.
- 1:04:09There's a timeout with 45 seconds left in the first half. Generals lead 10-0.
- 1:04:15And Reggie Collier is trying to go over to the sideline to discuss with Lee Corso what they're going to do with their next 45 seconds.
- 1:04:23You would think their game plan would be a little tighter than that. They had the clock stop by going out of bounds.
- 1:04:28And to waste a timeout like they did in this situation, bring them down to one timeout left, it just, I guess, that is the Washington Fed's.
- 1:04:35That's an ideal time to stop your team regrouping. You have 30 seconds to kill.
- 1:04:42That should be like clockwork. You've got to know when you're in this situation, you've got to cover the week of practice.
- 1:04:48They've had 10 days of practice. You've got to cover all situations. What are we going to do if we get in this situation?
- 1:04:54You don't want to waste your timeout. And Corso and Collier didn't talk to one another for about 10 seconds. That was about all.
- 1:05:01Second and two for Orlando, all the way back in their own 28-yard line.
- 1:05:06A late arriving crowd at Giants Stadium beginning to fill in now.
- 1:05:10Seven o'clock starting tonight, of course. Here's Collier rolling to his left, throwing, sideline, and incomplete.
- 1:05:15It was intended for Jerry Parrish, but he did not have both feet in bounds.
- 1:05:20He made the catch right in front of Lee Corso, who's now running onto the field complaining to the official.
- 1:05:25He's still on the field. Get the hook on Corso.
- 1:05:29That man does a full day's work in a fun football game. When he's up and down that sideline, I've never seen a coach like that.
- 1:05:35Well, Corso was wrong about that.
- 1:05:37Well, the official was Ted Colano, and he was standing right on the sideline. He was right in front of the play.
- 1:05:43You've got to give him credit. He was close. That's what he's getting paid for.
- 1:05:46I tell you, he was close. We took a look at the replay. It was close, all right.
- 1:05:51But still, that doesn't give Corso a license to do a halftime show here.
- 1:05:55He's going to call for a replay.
- 1:05:56Well, we're going to get a TV replay on this. But whether or not it's sufficiently black and white for Colonel Lepore to hold the rule.
- 1:06:03No, Charlie, no. I don't think so in this case.
- 1:06:05It was close, all right. We're looking at the replay even now. And, oh, it is awfully close.
- 1:06:12That's why I won't be able to.
- 1:06:14That's why I won't be overturned by Cal Lepore because it was awfully close.
- 1:06:18Cal Lepore wouldn't have overturned John Wilkes Booth.
- 1:06:22Well, anyhow, we're going to be waiting for the replay now.
- 1:06:24Down on the sidelines, the official is hooked up with the ESPN guy down there with the replay.
- 1:06:29And we'll see exactly what's going to happen up here in the broadcast booth.
- 1:06:33But I don't think it's going to be turned over.
- 1:06:35It was awfully close.
- 1:06:36It was.
- 1:06:37But, you know, old man Cal, he's just going to love me dead, calling me old man Cal.
- 1:06:42But Cal Lepore rarely, if ever, is overturned.
- 1:06:45And he says, point blank, it's got to be black and white, yes or no. There are no maybes involved.
- 1:06:50All right. Now we're going to get the meeting on the field. Two officials are getting together.
- 1:06:54That's the wife. All right. Good. The kids. Okay.
- 1:06:57They're going to college next year. Everything's fine.
- 1:06:59What do you think Cal's going to do now, guys?
- 1:07:01Okay. Now the referee is going to go over and talk to him.
- 1:07:04Well, we've got a zebra convention right here at Giant Stadium.
- 1:07:08Ed Colano is chatting with the referee for tonight's game.
- 1:07:13Bill Parkinson, who is in turn chatting with Cal Lepore, who is in turn chatting with somebody.
- 1:07:21Cal's telling the official about it right now. That's awful close. What do you think?
- 1:07:25It's a play-tale for getting.
- 1:07:29Actually, it's a very crucial play here.
- 1:07:32Because you're going to get them in close enough with 39 seconds to go a couple of more times.
- 1:07:37Well, here comes the call.
- 1:07:40It's a complete pass. Oh, the first one.
- 1:07:43Is that the first one, Johnny?
- 1:07:44It's the third one for the year.
- 1:07:46It is the first one that Lee Corso has finally gotten right. He was 0 for 2.
- 1:07:50And so there is no timeout assessed against Orlando.
- 1:07:54Well, now wait a minute. He called timeout before that, didn't he?
- 1:07:56Yeah, well, he's still got one timeout remain.
- 1:07:58But he would have been penalized a timeout if the ruling had been sustained.
- 1:08:04Because it's been overturned, there is no timeout. And so now, suddenly, it's Orlando first and 10 at the general 45-yard line.
- 1:08:11And suddenly, four wide receivers appear in the Orlando lineup.
- 1:08:14Walter Smith, Flowers, and Parrish. Out of the shotgun, flag on the play.
- 1:08:18I think the generals were a bit hasty.
- 1:08:21Matt East. All-stars, 63 on the offense.
- 1:08:24Oh, can we get the offense? And up here, Bob, from our position, it looks like it was Matt East who went offside.
- 1:08:30But it's our offensive lineman pulling him offside once again.
- 1:08:34Tom Dornbrook, number 63.
- 1:08:37Dornbrook played at Michigan last year and had several years, four of them to be precise, with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 1:08:44So it is first and 15 Orlando at the midfield stripe.
- 1:08:47Collier back to throw. Throwing long for Joey Walters.
- 1:08:50And he has got it at the 5-yard line, where it will be first and gold.
- 1:08:55Joey Walters with an exceptional catch, catching it in front of Danel Daniel, Ross Armstrong, and Gregory Johnson.
- 1:09:02And Ross Armstrong is the rookie, and he made the mistake.
- 1:09:05He's in center field, and he's got to go find the football.
- 1:09:07He looked up too late. If he had looked up a little sooner, he could have made the play.
- 1:09:11A pick-up of 44 yards, and now, suddenly, first and gold.
- 1:09:16The line of scrimmage will be the 6-yard line, with 31 seconds left.
- 1:09:21And that TV replay really turned around the fortunes of the Renegades, with less than a half a minute to go in the first half.
- 1:09:29You know what really turned around the fortunes of the Renegades?
- 1:09:31That fumble by Herschel Walker, down in the end zone.
- 1:09:34They bring it back to the 20-yard line. They get the TV replay, and they've got it turned around.
- 1:09:39They make an outstanding throw, and without a pass, with a throw by Reggie Collier.
- 1:09:43They put the ball up there, and Joey Walters comes down with the reception.
- 1:09:47Here now, it's the other way around. Instead of the point should be on the general side of the field,
- 1:09:52they're coming right back here, and it looks like they're in an opportunity for three points at least, and whoops, not a touchdown.
- 1:09:59They got the ball moving.
- 1:10:00From the should-ofs, what-ofs, and could-ofs department, the generals, had they scored, would have made it 17-0.
- 1:10:05Now Orlando could make it 10-7.
- 1:10:08Two tight ends.
- 1:10:0931 seconds left in the half. First and gold for the 6. Collier back to throw.
- 1:10:14Collier stops, throws to the end zone, and it's incomplete.
- 1:10:17He overthrew tight end Don Nichols. Bob Nizelik was also in the area, but it is incomplete.
- 1:10:24It'll be second down and gold from the 6 with 25 seconds left in the half.
- 1:10:29That time they came with two tight ends and a straight-eye backfield, looking like it's an ideal running formation.
- 1:10:34He came with a bootleg action. He tried to find his end in the corner of the end zone. He was well covered.
- 1:10:38Now they come back with their wide receivers, Flowers and Walters in the ball game, coming to one side here.
- 1:10:43Flowers and Walters, both blank to the right.
- 1:10:46Odom, along with Bledsoe, split in the backfield.
- 1:10:50Second and gold from the 6. Collier back to throw.
- 1:10:53Rolling to his right, stopping, and he is running out of bounds.
- 1:10:58He got the pass off to Jackie Flowers. There was only one fly in the oyster.
- 1:11:03And that was it. Reggie Collier was out of bounds when he threw the ball.
- 1:11:06One little mistake out there by Reggie.
- 1:11:08And he was out of bounds. His right foot came down out of bounds.
- 1:11:11He ran out of bounds, not five yards in front of Coach Cassio, who was very hasty in his retreat that night.
- 1:11:18Well, I've got to tell you something. The Generals have got to put this thing, and they've got to be more consistent.
- 1:11:24I said before in this half that they are not playing as consistent tonight as far as their offense goes as they did last week against a better football team.
- 1:11:32And they've got to get this thing turned around here because they can't afford mistakes or letdowns and give the opportunity for the Renegades to get some points.
- 1:11:40Collier ran out of bounds and lost six on the plays, his third and goal from the 12.
- 1:11:45And Collier once again is back to throw from the dead center of the field.
- 1:11:48He throws over the middle, and he completes it to the tight end. Bob Disslin, who has dropped down at the three-yard line, who took four Generals to take him down.
- 1:11:55And there's no timeouts left. There's only six seconds. They're not going to get this thing off.
- 1:11:59They can't do it, Bob.
- 1:12:00And this is why the Orlando Renegades are the former Washington Feds. Time ran out of them.
- 1:12:06A great job by that defense, though, keeping the ball in front of them and not permitting Nizilek to get in the end zone.
- 1:12:12And we have come to the end of the first half, and the Generals lead by the hair of their chinny-chin-chin, 10 to nothing.
- 1:12:20We're a giant stadium in the middle line. And we'll be back on the New Jersey Generals football network.
- 1:12:25Oh, Bentley, what's today's forecast?
- 1:12:27A shower, sir. Rain again.

- 1:13:18Voidware prohibited by law. Drawing date, June 17th, 1985.
- 1:13:2257, Beverly Benzini, the happy guy.
- 1:13:41Welcome back to Giant Stadium here in East Rutherford, New Jersey with the generals leading the Orlando Renegades 10-0.
- 1:13:48The generals were came awfully close to making it 17-0, and then, of course, Orlando made it awfully close and making it 10-7,
- 1:13:55but when all was said and done, it is in fact a 10-0 halftime lead.
- 1:13:59Herschel Walker, first half, 14 carries, 96 yards.
- 1:14:03Doug Flutie had some really acrobatic moves in the first half, including a brilliant touchdown pass from Flutie to Sam Bowers.
- 1:14:09Bowers had to go high into the air to snare that one down.
- 1:14:12Sam Bowers is playing an outstanding football game out of White Plains, New York, went to Fordham.
- 1:14:16He's doing a real fine job not only in the passing game, but in the running game too, as well as blocking.
- 1:14:21We've got to take now while Michael's got to get back in there and look and find some way to get some consistency on his football team.
- 1:14:27The defense, when they shut him out, they've done a real fine job.
- 1:14:31The quarterback they're playing against tonight is not the best quarterback in the league.
- 1:14:34He can be dangerous, and they come away with no points, but as far as the defense and the generals go, they've got to be satisfied.
- 1:14:39Bob Cassie, all of your halftime evaluations.
- 1:14:41Well, we said earlier right in the beginning of the show that it's always tough to play him a second time, and it's always tough to beat him a second time.
- 1:14:47And although Orlando is not a very good football team, they're still playing with a lot of emotion.
- 1:14:51The generals lead 10 to nothing. They've made some mistakes, but yet they've controlled a good part of this game, and the defense has risen to the occasion when they had to.
- 1:14:57I think the second half, while Michael's will say, let's get the football, it's our turn to take it, let's go down and get some points and make this thing out of reach for them.
- 1:15:04Should the generals go on and win this game tonight, their record would improve to 7-3, and that would place them in a three-way tie for first place in the USFL East, tied along with Tampa Bay and Birmingham.
- 1:15:19Of course, a big story of the day today was the powwow in Teaneck, New Jersey, and coming up in just a couple of minutes, an interview with the commissioner of the USFL, Harry Usher, who will brief us on exactly what was said and done.
- 1:15:31It's halftime at Giant Stadium in the Middlelands. Generals 10, Orlando no score. We'll be back in two minutes with that interview with Harry Usher.
- 1:15:39Reach for the star, you can trust your heart. Reach for the star, to the products with the star. Reach for the star, the big, bright Texaco star.
- 1:15:51If your car knocks, it's probably undernourished, so put it on a diet. Texaco's super unleaded diet. It's got higher octane than regular unleaded to help knock out the knocks.
- 1:16:01Reach for the star, the big, bright Texaco star. Reach for the star.
- 1:16:08Want to be in command of the road for as long as you own your car? If so, see your local AC Delco dealer for a new set of Delco Performer shock absorbers.
- 1:16:27It's halftime at Giant Stadium and joining me in the General Broadcast booth now is the commissioner of the USFL, Harry Usher, who has certainly had a busy day today. Harry, for those who are just tuning in and may not have heard the news, what happened at the celebrated meeting in Teaneck today?
- 1:16:43Well, the owners agreed by a count of 12 to reaffirm the decision they took in August of 1984 to go to the fall of 1986 after the spring season is completed. And that was one of the basic decisions.
- 1:16:57The other was to put to rest all the speculation about the possibility of LA folding during this year. And basically a reaffirmation again of a vote that was taken in January that this team and no team would fold during the 1986 year.
- 1:17:11What is the status currently of the Los Angeles Express franchise in terms of finding an owner? The status of the Birmingham Stallions, they certainly had problems unrelated necessarily to the league. San Antonio and Houston reportedly also have problems.
- 1:17:25Well, LA, we had some buyers that were very interested in it. And about three weeks ago, a whole lot of speculation started occurring. Are we going to be in the spring or fall? I thought that had been put to rest. But then John Bassett made an announcement that he was not going to play in the USFL unless he played in the spring and that he was going to go out and form his own league.
- 1:17:44And that activity has been going on for the past three weeks. And it's been very difficult to be able to make sure that everyone who is interested in any franchise knew exactly the facts that were going on. That's the reason I called the meeting to put this to rest.
- 1:17:56So as far as Los Angeles is concerned now, what is the status of a potential owner? Are you near? Are you far?
- 1:18:02We're near. We're near. We have a couple real live ones and we're working on it. I hope that we'll be able to consummate something within 30 days.
- 1:18:09Birmingham, Houston, and San Antonio. Birmingham is a very interesting situation because the city voted to both lend and invest money in the team provided there was matching money put up.
- 1:18:20The league itself has agreed to not collect certain assessments from it until February 1, 1986. And that was another action item taken today.
- 1:18:29So the Birmingham at this point I think is in good shape. San Antonio is a matter of the cash flow problems that occasion a number of matters that got public recognition. Those things have all been put to bed.
- 1:18:42And Houston is exactly the same situation it was at the beginning of the year. League is providing a small amount of loan to carry through the end of the year.
- 1:18:49It may well also have a new buyer that was mentioned today. But things have stabilized and with the direction and with the clear input that this would be a fall 86 team lead with the teams that are dedicated to playing in it, I think we made a great statement today that everyone I hope will listen to.
- 1:19:09Two teams voted against Tampa Bay and Denver is my understanding. What will happen to those two franchises?
- 1:19:16Well John Bassett on behalf of the Tampa Bay Band has announced that he would finish the season and then withdraw from the league.
- 1:19:21Actually Doug Spedding is looking at the situation. He does have a difficult situation in Denver in the fall because of the Broncos.
- 1:19:30So he's got to make a decision. One of his decisions may be to see if John can put together some kind of spring league and go with it.
- 1:19:38Another decision would be to move his team. Another decision may be simply to withdraw. So he has to make a decision under the facts as he best can determine them.
- 1:19:49And he hasn't actually done anything to express a negative vote in the sense of the affirmation.
- 1:19:54Will there be a team in Chicago in the fall of 86?
- 1:19:57Yes there will be. There will be teams in New York or New York metropolitan area, New Jersey, Chicago and Los Angeles.
- 1:20:05Those are the key markets and we're going to be there.
- 1:20:08Now as far as television is concerned, that obviously is the bread and butter for any league, any more professional or amateur.
- 1:20:15How are you going to get your games across and more importantly where are you going to get your money from?
- 1:20:19Well our ESPN agreement, which has two more years to run after the conclusion of this year, is applicable whether it was spring or fall.
- 1:20:27So that that forms a base floor of the television revenues.
- 1:20:31On top of that, from the explorations that I have done, the revenues that are available are rather substantial in the fall in contrast to the spring.
- 1:20:38So that was another factor that was discussed. It was an important factor. As you say, the revenues from television are a rather key factor.
- 1:20:46We talked about impact on attendance. We talked about the stadium availability. We talked about a number of things.
- 1:20:52At the conclusion of it, we took not a straw vote but an indication of interest and it came out this way as we have been reporting.
- 1:21:03So basically what we will see is a syndicated network of sorts in the fall of 86 at this point or what?
- 1:21:09Well in the most generic concept of the word syndication.
- 1:21:14Syndication typically means going through a syndicator and having that syndicator put together through conventional methods, ways of distributing the signal.
- 1:21:23I think that what we are going to work out is something a lot more interesting, a lot more exciting and properly a lot more profitable.
- 1:21:30We will be announcing that in the future and it is an exciting new concept using some of the technology that is available today.
- 1:21:36Well fair enough. Harry Usher, thank you very much for coming up here and spending half time with us here at Giant State.
- 1:21:41All right, thank you Joe.
- 1:21:44It is half time at Giant Stadium in the Middlelands with the Generals leading the Orlando Renegades 10 to nothing.
- 1:21:50We will be back on the New Jersey Generals football network.
- 1:21:56A quarterback needs protection.
- 1:22:00Come on guys, with my protection out there. I have been down so many times it looks like I am.

- 1:22:14And a special friction fighter helps save gasoline and improve mileage.
- 1:22:18On the field a quarterback needs good protection. Your engine needs tough protection off the field.
- 1:22:24Protection is the name of the game with Texaco Havellon Supreme.

- 1:24:5257, WMC, and the Ernie Gourds.
- 1:25:01We are back at Giant Stadium in the Meadowlands and with us now is one of the owners of the Houston Gamblers, Dr. Jerry Arkovitz, a familiar name and face here in the general broadcast booth.
- 1:25:16And Jerry Sklar who has been holding the Birmingham Stallions together with the bubble gum and Band-Aids over the past couple of weeks.
- 1:25:22Jerry Sklar, let me ask you question number one. What with the outcome of the meeting today, how does that bode for the Birmingham Stallions in Birmingham?
- 1:25:31What with the search for an owner and so on?
- 1:25:33I think it gives us a tremendous boost. You know the league did some things today that really helped our franchise and of course with the city making a million dollar investment in our franchise,
- 1:25:42a hundred thousand dollar investment and nine hundred thousand dollar loan. We've just got a lot of debt of gratitude out to a lot of people and I think we're going to have a very viable franchise to be around for a long time.
- 1:25:51We look forward to playing up here in the Meadowlands. I think the final game of the season against the generals.
- 1:25:56That is exactly right. Let's not make it too final for that championship game here at the Meadowlands.
- 1:26:01Have you now an owner that is waiting to purchase the club as a result of today's meeting? What is that status?
- 1:26:06No, we do not have an owner that is waiting to purchase the club. Our decision has been to go to a broad-based ownership in Birmingham with a lot of community involvement and we think that's the way to go down there.
- 1:26:15We're getting the support. We've got the support of the city now and I think we're going to be real successful.
- 1:26:19Does the fall present any problems with you down there for the Stallions, what with Auburn and Alabama football?
- 1:26:25I don't think so. I think that Alabama plays three football games in Birmingham. We can have some big sports weekends, but I think it'll complement one another and we're real pleased with it.
- 1:26:33What day of the week would ideally be the best week day of the week for you to play down there?
- 1:26:38Ideally the best day of the week is to play Saturday night. I'm not sure that we will be able to do that, but that remains to be seen.
- 1:26:43Jerry Sklar, thank you very much for coming up to the booth.
- 1:26:46Thank you.
- 1:26:47Who's who of ownership here in the USFL tonight?
- 1:26:50Dr. Jerry Arkovitz now. What is your impression of today's meeting and how does that bode for the Gamblers who it's no secret have had some money problems down there?
- 1:26:58I thought the vote today was a tremendous, I was very much in favor of fall football. That's traditionally where football is played.
- 1:27:06That's where the fans want to see it. I think that's where the money is at in TV.
- 1:27:10And the Gamblers financial files, we don't have any more.
- 1:27:13The next 60 days we will announce a new ownership majority owner of our franchise, some people in the Fortune 100 group.
- 1:27:19And that will eliminate our franchise for the next 400 years as far as financial problems go.
- 1:27:23The second half kickoff has just taken place. Jeff Brockhouse kicked it to an up back.
- 1:27:29Sam Bowers who returned it out to the 36 yard line where the generals have it first and tend to go.
- 1:27:34Stay with us here just a minute Jerry if you would.
- 1:27:37We have Doug Flutie calling signals out of the eye formation. Carthen and Walker are deep. Broughton and Collins flank to the left.
- 1:27:44First play, second half, generals really intend nothing. Hand off to Herschel off right tackle and Herschel gets nothing.
- 1:27:50Gets back to the line of scrimmage and that's about all second and ten at the 36.
- 1:27:54Now as far as the...
- 1:27:55You never got nothing against us.
- 1:27:57As far as the Gamblers are concerned going against the Oilers, is that present of much of a problem for you in your community?
- 1:28:05I look forward to that. I mean they certainly are not going against the Cowboys.
- 1:28:09Being in Houston, again the way the Oilers have been the last several years with the most exciting team and professional football I believe, the Houston Gamblers.
- 1:28:16I think we can compete with any team in the National Football League.
- 1:28:19I've had to be in a city where there's an NFL team, Houston is the place to be.
- 1:28:22General second and eleven from the 35, Flutie back to throw, being forced to run out of the pocket.
- 1:28:27Rolling, running, 40 and he runs out of bounds at the 43 yard line to pick up a bait on the play.
- 1:28:33It'll be third down and three yards to go. Flutie run out of bounds.
- 1:28:37Now back to the issues at hand.
- 1:28:39You have John Bassett who has left the league.
- 1:28:41Tampa Bay was really one of the stronger franchises in the league.
- 1:28:44What is the impact on the loss of Bassett and the Bannets?
- 1:28:47Well I have a lot of respect for the aberration of John.
- 1:28:49I'm sorry to see him leave but we need to pair our league down to the maximum of twelve teams anyway.
- 1:28:54I see the Tampa Bay team as an alternative to going to Chicago when they start up next year.
- 1:28:59We've got a good Nukes, a good team, good coach and I'd see John go but I wish him well.
- 1:29:06General's third and three at the 42. Flutie rolling right, looking to get rid of the ball.
- 1:29:11Rolling, rolling, puts a juke on and he's going to be brought down from behind.
- 1:29:14No he stepped out of the clutch of the defender and he's got the first down.
- 1:29:17All the way to the 49 yard line. First and ten New Jersey.
- 1:29:21General's leading ten-nothing a minute and a half into the third quarter.
- 1:29:24Your quarterback's down.
- 1:29:27Bob, could you see on the sideline what did he down blow? What's up Flutie?
- 1:29:30He's fine. He stumbled forward and he just made a great move to get out of bounds and get a first down.
- 1:29:36All in all Jerry Argobit, you're obviously then pleased with the outcome of today's meeting.
- 1:29:40Absolutely. They're thriving out at the end of two and a half years.
- 1:29:43This league has been unprecedented in sports history.
- 1:29:45There are six teams today and this league can play in the NFL and compete very well.
- 1:29:49Alright, fair enough. Jerry Argobit's with us here in the booth live.
- 1:29:52Here's Walker, first and ten at the 48. Turning the corner, flag on the play.
- 1:29:56Walker run out of bounds at the 35 yard line to pick up a 15.
- 1:30:00Now there are two, there are three flags on the play.
- 1:30:03Holding against New Jersey is one of the calls.
- 1:30:06Well, I'll tell you one thing there Mr. Herman and Mr. Cassiola.
- 1:30:09Everybody came out of this meeting breathing a sigh of relief and they're beating their breath saying,
- 1:30:14hey, everything is just honky-dory.
- 1:30:16Those who showed up here at the ball game.
- 1:30:18Uh huh. Of course.
- 1:30:19John Bassett is the one, lone guy in that old organization, the USFL, that decided he is not going to take his team.
- 1:30:25Now Jerry made a very interesting point.
- 1:30:27He said that, I think I heard him say that they could take that nucleus of that football team and move it to Chicago.
- 1:30:32Doesn't John Bassett, if he leaves the league, doesn't he take his football players with him?
- 1:30:35He would, yeah.
- 1:30:36I think what he meant to say was, what the delegate from Houston meant to say was that,
- 1:30:41in fact, there would be a new franchise in Chicago so they're killing off the Tampa Bay market
- 1:30:46and exchanging it for the number two market in the country, which is Chicago.
- 1:30:50Generals first and ten at their own 38.
- 1:30:52Flutie back to throw, throwing long over the middle for Waldo Broughton.
- 1:30:55He's got it in the 30 yard line and Broughton is down at the 26 yard line of Orlando, first and ten to go.
- 1:31:01And that's a great move by Waldo Broughton coming in from the left side of the formation as the split receiver,
- 1:31:06breaking over the middle, getting behind Gray, the corner back to that side, in the middle, no free safety.
- 1:31:11Doug Flutie waited for him to get open and led him beautifully.
- 1:31:14Big gain, got out of a hole.
- 1:31:15The General's got to get a score now.
- 1:31:17They've been close too many times tonight.
- 1:31:19A pick up of 36 yards on the play, Generals first and ten at the Orlando 26 yard line.
- 1:31:25In the third quarter, the Generals are marching from right to left.
- 1:31:29Maurice Carthen on a wing to the left.
- 1:31:31Here's Walker with a pitch out running left, looking to turn the corner at the 25 yard line and down he goes at the 25.
- 1:31:37A pick up of one.
- 1:31:38It'll be second down and nine.
- 1:31:39Freeman and Randolph, a couple of linebackers combined to make the tack.
- 1:31:43On that last play though, Bob, the one that Doug Flutie threw so very well,
- 1:31:46the pass blocking up front was excellent on that particular situation.
- 1:31:50And it looks like the left offensive tackle, Doug Mackie, is now doing a much better job blocking against the defensive end, number 66, Scott Hutchinson.
- 1:31:59Hutchinson has been shut out in the last several attempts trying to get to Flutie, the quarterback, when he's throwing the football.
- 1:32:05That was Walker's 200th carry of the season.
- 1:32:07Generals second and eight at the 24 yard line.
- 1:32:12Out of the eye.
- 1:32:13Flutie.
- 1:32:14Here's Flutie running right, turning the corner, 25, 20, 15, 10, cutting back and he's down at the three yard line.
- 1:32:21It's been Doug Flutie night tonight along with Herschel Walker.
- 1:32:24He really has and Doug Flutie, of course, taking that football on that rollout.
- 1:32:28It wasn't a full leg, it was a rollout running behind.
- 1:32:31He didn't see anybody open and he saw the bigger end running and you can hear the crowd yelling, Flutie.
- 1:32:36That's right, no sir.
- 1:32:37Flutie, Flutie.
- 1:32:39A good job by Doug Flutie.
- 1:32:40Outstanding athlete.
- 1:32:41I got to tell you something.
- 1:32:42He's come into his own.
- 1:32:44It doesn't look like it's makeshift out there the way it did before.
- 1:32:47It looks like there's more design to it.
- 1:32:48I don't know how you can design your quarterback running and cutting back over the middle.
- 1:32:52But obviously he found the open area and got down there almost into the end zone.
- 1:32:56John Jewell has checked into the lineup and I think he is a tackle eligible.
- 1:33:01We'll have to wait and see.
- 1:33:02Generals first and goal for the two.
- 1:33:04Hand off to Walker straight and he touched it.
- 1:33:06For Walker, his 11th touchdown of the season and the Generals lead 16 to nothing.
- 1:33:11With the extra point track coming up.
- 1:33:14Well, we thought they would go in there looking to come back out using that offense as Bob suggested.
- 1:33:19And getting some points and they really put it together on that particular series.
- 1:33:22Doug Flutie, of course, being the hero, if you will, along with Herschel Walker.
- 1:33:27But Doug Flutie threw the wrong ball and ran in pretty close to the touchdown and then it was Walker getting the points.
- 1:33:32Ruzek, 30 of 32 in the extra point department, will try and tack on point 17, which he has successfully accomplished.
- 1:33:41A break in the action.
- 1:33:42Ten minutes, 16 seconds to go, third quarter.
- 1:33:45Generals pitching a shutout.
- 1:33:4617-nothing over the Renegades.
- 1:33:48We're at Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands and we'll be back on the New Jersey Generals football network.
- 1:33:54Hey, Cab.
- 1:33:56Bob Hope.
- 1:33:58Hi.
- 1:33:59We've got to put on these earmuffs to drown out the engine knocks.
- 1:34:02Hey, you don't need earmuffs.
- 1:34:04You need star power.
- 1:34:05Texaco Star Power, the higher octane and Texaco Super Unleaded that can help knock out the knocks.
- 1:34:11Hey, Cab.
- 1:34:13Hello again, Mr. Hope.
- 1:34:14You know the engine's so quiet now I can tell you some of my jokes.
- 1:34:18You still have those earmuffs?

- 1:34:52AC Delco, the smart parts.
- 1:34:55Available at CMT 1104 Princeton Avenue in Trenton.
- 1:35:0257, WMC, and the only goal.
- 1:35:09Giant Stadium in the middle lands, General 17-0.
- 1:35:14Ruzik's kickoff field by Jerry Parrish.
- 1:35:16He drops the ball at the five-yard line.
- 1:35:18Now he picks it up, running for dear life.
- 1:35:20He's going to be tackled and smeared at the seven-yard line.
- 1:35:23John Jewell was in on the tackle along once again with Jim Dumont.
- 1:35:30And it goes bad. It really goes bad for the Orlando Regal Minigate.
- 1:35:35I got to tell you, dropping that football and then he had nowhere else to run.
- 1:35:39And you look at that coverage coming down, the Generals really come out here in the second half knowing what they had to do.
- 1:35:44And they were bound and determined they were going to get it done.
- 1:35:46They've been played a real outstanding series on offense.
- 1:35:49The special teams came down and covered the kick very well.
- 1:35:52And now we'll see how the defense performs.
- 1:35:54Ledsoe and Odom in the Orlando backfield.
- 1:35:57Generals scoring play, seven plays, 67 yards in four minutes, 44 seconds.
- 1:36:02Walker a two-yard touchdown run.
- 1:36:04Here's Collier back to throw.
- 1:36:06Throwing sideline well short of the intended receiver, Joey Walters.
- 1:36:10Coming out first down and throwing the football.
- 1:36:12You think when they're down 17-0, one of the things Reggie Collier would revert to is Reggie Collier doing the job, carrying the football himself.
- 1:36:19We may see some of this if the frustration grows as far as the passing game.
- 1:36:23He may have to decide to run it himself.
- 1:36:25And it's going to be very important for the Generals defense, which has done the job thus far tonight, to contain Reggie Collier.
- 1:36:32The Generals won the first meeting of this year in Orlando from the Renegades, 28-10.
- 1:36:37Now it's the Generals 17-0, 9.43 to go third quarter.
- 1:36:41Collier with four wide outs, back to throw.
- 1:36:44Collier throwing over the middle for Joey Walters.
- 1:36:46He completes it to the 15-yard line, but Walters paid for his indiscretion as Danel Daniel and Ross Armstrong made the tackle for New Jersey and hit him hard.
- 1:36:55And that's what Dave mentioned before.
- 1:36:56They're catching the football in front of those people, whether it be the tight end of the wide receiver.
- 1:37:00But they're paying for the catch.
- 1:37:02And sooner or later, they may start to look for those defenders and take their eye off the ball.
- 1:37:07So it is third down and two yards to go for the Orlando Renegades.
- 1:37:13The ball is their own 16-yard line.
- 1:37:16Marching from left to right are the Renegades in their white and blue-trimmed uniforms.
- 1:37:21Generals 17-0, 9 minutes to go third quarter.
- 1:37:25Third and two.
- 1:37:26Collier hands the play.
- 1:37:27So straight ahead.
- 1:37:28He is going to be short on the first down, I do believe.
- 1:37:31Bob Cassiola near the line of scrimmage.
- 1:37:33What does it look like?
- 1:37:34He's short by almost a yard.
- 1:37:35All right.
- 1:37:36So it looks like it'll be fourth down.
- 1:37:37In fact, Greg Kader has trotted onto the field with his 43-yard per-punt average.
- 1:37:42Tonight he's pretty much good on cue with two points, one of 45 yards and the other of 42.
- 1:37:47And let's say something about Kyle Borland who stepped in two games ago for John Joyce.
- 1:37:51Kyle Borland is playing an excellent job of linebacker inside, making a big hit just as the...
- 1:37:57as the running back tried to make...
- 1:37:59Bledsoe tried to get to that first down.
- 1:38:01It was Kyle Borland who made the hit that stopped him.
- 1:38:04And one of the things that's been very impressive, again, on that particular situation,
- 1:38:08was your big nose tackle out there, Emmanuel Weaver, instead of running around the block, Bob,
- 1:38:12and you know what I'm talking about, he fights through the block and keeps those guys off those linebackers,
- 1:38:16keeps that offensive guard off the linebackers, and lets the Kyle Borland make the play just man.
- 1:38:20He's a very tough guy against the run.
- 1:38:22He's a great run defensive down line.
- 1:38:24Tom Woodland's knee is feeling better and better, I'm sure.
- 1:38:27On fourth and one for the 17, Cater, with a high but relatively short punt,
- 1:38:32fielded by Danny Knight and he is going to be smeared at his own 43 yard line.
- 1:38:37But the Generals will have excellent field position with eight minutes and 15 seconds to go in the third quarter.
- 1:38:44It was Lupe Sanchez who made the tackle on the play.
- 1:38:47So the Generals first and 10 for their own 43, 8.15 to go third quarter, New Jersey 17,
- 1:38:53Orlando nothing, a giant stadium in the middlelands, and we'll be right back.
- 1:38:57Want to be in command of the road for as long as you own your car?
- 1:39:00If so, see your local ACDelco dealer for a new set of Delco Performer shock absorbers.
- 1:39:05Delco Performers are gas pushing to provide responsive handling by virtually eliminating shock lag
- 1:39:10under normal and high performance driving conditions.
- 1:39:13And Delco Performers come with a limited lifetime warranty.
- 1:39:16That's why ACDelco says they're the only shocks your car will ever need.
- 1:39:19Ask for details and for a lifetime of smooth rides get a set of gas-pushing Delco Performer shocks.
- 1:39:25ACDelco, the smart part.
- 1:39:29Available in Brogan, Cadillac, Olds, Route 46 East in Totoa.
- 1:39:36We are back at Giant Stadium in the Middlelands.
- 1:39:40It was a 37 yard punt for Frank Kader and the Generals have excellent field position.
- 1:39:45First and 10 at their own 44 yard line and this is the third quarter.
- 1:39:49With eight minutes and ten seconds to go in the clock running, the Generals are marching from right to left.
- 1:39:54With Walter Broughton flanked out to the right side, he's the only wide receiver.
- 1:39:58And Herschel Walker on a wing to the left leaving Carthen the single setback.
- 1:40:02Generals at their own 44.
- 1:40:04Flutie calling six.
- 1:40:05Flutie hits a Carthen straight ahead.
- 1:40:07Carthen pulls over the 50 to the 46 yard line of the Orlando Renegades.
- 1:40:12That's very close to a first down where Victor Jackson had the unenviable task of taking the ball.
- 1:40:17Oh, did he take Mr. Carthen on?
- 1:40:20And I've got to tell you something, on that battle he lost.
- 1:40:22Victor Jackson lost.
- 1:40:24Carthen just ran right over the top of him.
- 1:40:26You give that guy credit, give Jackson credit for having the proper technique and proper position.
- 1:40:30But man, he needs more size when he's going to take that big ball back on.
- 1:40:33Marcus Anderson now checks into the lineup.
- 1:40:35He is flanked to the right and Danny Knight a flanker to the left.
- 1:40:39Carthen and Walker split in the backfield.
- 1:40:41Now they move into the I-formation.
- 1:40:43Generals first and 10 at the Orlando 46.
- 1:40:45And up to Herschel running right.
- 1:40:47Herschel turning the corner.
- 1:40:48Herschel still on his feet.
- 1:40:49Herschel to the 30, 25, 20.
- 1:40:51And he is knocked out of bounds at the 14 yard line.
- 1:40:55Wow, did you see that?
- 1:40:57That's Buster's feet breaking away at Herschel.
- 1:40:59Walker, as soon as he got about two yards past the line of scrimmage,
- 1:41:02he takes off like the world class spinner he is.
- 1:41:04And man, he really hustled that.
- 1:41:06That is something, I've got to tell you.
- 1:41:07That time the defensive backs Gray and George came up to make the play
- 1:41:11and all they got was shoulders.
- 1:41:12And that's what they're running into.
- 1:41:13Herschel Walker's got such great body lean when he runs.
- 1:41:16And when he gets going and he levels you, you're going to tackle shoulders.
- 1:41:19And he ends up putting you back another four or five yards.
- 1:41:22Marcus Anderson now flanked to the right.
- 1:41:24Walker on a wing to the left.
- 1:41:26Carthen the single setback.
- 1:41:27Generals first and 10 at the Orlando 13 yard line.
- 1:41:31And up to Carthen.
- 1:41:32Looking to turn the corner left side.
- 1:41:33He does.
- 1:41:34He is going to be brought down, however, at about the seven yard line.
- 1:41:37A pickup of six on the play.
- 1:41:39Second and four, Fred McAllister the middle linebacker.
- 1:41:42Kelvin Atkins the outside linebacker.
- 1:41:44Makes the tackle for Orlando.
- 1:41:45Perfect in the situation for Wal Michaels offensively.
- 1:41:48He's alternating now.
- 1:41:49He's giving Carthen the ball.
- 1:41:51He puts Herschel Walker on the flank, gives him a rest.
- 1:41:54Then he brings Herschel back to the single back.
- 1:41:56Carthen, he's getting balanced in his offense.
- 1:41:58And really the offense is working to perfection.
- 1:42:01Generals they call it second and five at the eight yard line.
- 1:42:05Carthen again the single setback.
- 1:42:07Walker a wing to the left.
- 1:42:08Marcus Anderson flanked to the right.
- 1:42:10Generals lead 17 to nothing.
- 1:42:12Six twenty to go, third quarter.
- 1:42:14Hitting to Carthen.
- 1:42:15Carthen inside the five.
- 1:42:17Carthen down to about the three yard line.
- 1:42:19And there's no question about it.
- 1:42:21Wal Michaels is sitting on a 17 point lead.
- 1:42:23He's driving almost into the end zone now inside the five yard line.
- 1:42:27And as you mentioned Bob, he's going to take an all-day tap ball.
- 1:42:30And it's going to be a game between Carthen, Carthon, number 33, and Walker, number 34.
- 1:42:34There's no sense.
- 1:42:35You've got the ball game under control at this point.
- 1:42:37There's no sense of getting the ball to Herschel all the time.
- 1:42:40It's still eight more games after this one.
- 1:42:42Exactly.
- 1:42:43Said to play.
- 1:42:44And Herschel's already got 18 carries for 130 yards.
- 1:42:47You're not trying to set any record here tonight.
- 1:42:49You're trying to win the ball game and continue as the head coach, not the players,
- 1:42:53but as the head coach looking down the road at what's up ahead of us.
- 1:42:56And the general's on the play, record the first down. Carthen did.
- 1:43:00It's going to be first and goal from the four.
- 1:43:02Mo Carthon tonight, five carries, 24 yards.
- 1:43:06I want to tell you there's a very fine job being done on the left side of the line tonight,
- 1:43:10especially by Vince Strode.
- 1:43:11He's having an excellent night.
- 1:43:13He's blocking that old veteran.
- 1:43:14And he's in there, Joe Erman, who's up down on the run defense.
- 1:43:18And Strath is getting the better of it.
- 1:43:20Erman played for George Allen many times.
- 1:43:23Chicago, Arizona and Washington.
- 1:43:25Erman playing an high play. You can figure that out now.
- 1:43:27He must be pushing 60 by now.
- 1:43:29Pitch out to Walker running right.
- 1:43:31Walker, he turned the corner.
- 1:43:33He's brought down at the three yard line a pickup of one.
- 1:43:35Bernard West grabbed the only available part of Walker's anatomy, his ankles, and brought him down.
- 1:43:42And that's where you got to tackle him.
- 1:43:43And West made a big play.
- 1:43:44West is not the biggest of linebackers.
- 1:43:46He came in behind his blockers and waited for that hole to open up.
- 1:43:49And he caught Herschel right around the ankles and brought him down for no game.
- 1:43:52I can't believe Joe Erman played against Dave Herman.
- 1:43:56Well, believe it, because he did.
- 1:43:57He had another tackle playing down there with a Baltimore Colts.
- 1:44:00His name was Mike something.
- 1:44:01Very quick, very quick guy.
- 1:44:03But Joe Erman played the same man as he played down, anchoring the line against the run.
- 1:44:07Second and goal at the four yard line.
- 1:44:09Speck in motion to the near side.
- 1:44:11Hand off to Carthen, who pulls his way in for the touchdown.
- 1:44:14Forrest Carthen, his fourth touchdown of the season.
- 1:44:17And the general now leads what he created of it.
- 1:44:20Exactly where you called it, Bob.
- 1:44:22You said that Vince Straub was having a good game.
- 1:44:24Number 66, the left offensive guard playing against Joe Erman, whoever comes in there.
- 1:44:29And he ran it right over the top of Big Vince.
- 1:44:31He pushed him into the end zone.
- 1:44:33And of course, Maurice Carthen carried it up over the top and got the six points.
- 1:44:37And now Roger Ruzek is going to ask for overtime, man.
- 1:44:41He's been busy tonight for the extra point try.
- 1:44:45Paratree is the holder.
- 1:44:46Russ Mitchell is the long snapper.
- 1:44:48The place to kick is perfect.
- 1:44:50And the generals lead 24 to nothing with four minutes 52 seconds to go in the third quarter.
- 1:44:57From Giant Steve in the Meadowlands, where we'll return on the New Jersey General's football network.
- 1:45:03Hey, fans, if you haven't been out to see Doug Flutie, the record-breaking Herschel Walker,
- 1:45:07and the rest of the playoff Hungry Generals, now here's what's coming up next.
- 1:45:10Sunday, May 12th is Mother's Day at 2.30 p.m.
- 1:45:13Star Wars, USFL style.
- 1:45:15The 84 champion Baltimore stars invading Giant Stadium with Chuck Fusina and Calvin Bryant.
- 1:45:20Don't forget to bring Mom.
- 1:45:22Saturday night, June 1st, 7 o'clock, the generals host the Memphis Showboats.
- 1:45:26And the USFL's number one passer, Walter Lewis.
- 1:45:29Now also, two lucky couples will win round-trip airfare, compliments of Pan Am,
- 1:45:35by coming in their best European costume from France, England, Germany, or Italy.
- 1:45:42Yep, gates open at 5.30, concession stands open early, too.
- 1:45:46The Stadium Club opens for members at 4.30.
- 1:45:48So come on out, enjoy dinner or a snack, and see some great action.
- 1:45:51June 1st, Saturday night at 7, generals in Memphis.
- 1:45:54Advance sales of Ticketron outlets are at the Meadowlands Arena box office,
- 1:45:58Monday through Saturday, 10 to 6, Sundays from noon to 5, or call 935-3900.
- 1:46:03They have game tickets on sale at Giant Stadium.
- 1:46:06Ticket windows three hours before game time.
- 1:46:08Come on out, the generals want you.
- 1:46:1057, early busy, ain't the end of the line.
- 1:46:18Generals 24, Orlando no score, 4 minutes 52 seconds to go, third quarter.
- 1:46:26Roger Ruzek with the ball teed up at the 35 yard line to our right.
- 1:46:30Jerry Parrish standing back at his five yard line to our left, awaiting the kickoff.
- 1:46:35It has been all New Jersey, and in the third quarter where the generals this season at any rate have been historically horrid,
- 1:46:42they have scored 14 unanswered points against Orlando.
- 1:46:47That's right, this is the third quarter, isn't it?
- 1:46:49And this has been their first quarter, right?
- 1:46:51Not tonight.
- 1:46:52Good job.
- 1:46:53Ruzek with the kickoff high end over end, and Parrish feels it at the five yard line,
- 1:46:58looking to turn the corner at the 10, and he can't, he is tossed out of bounds.
- 1:47:02Ruthlessly, I might add, and Bill Parkinson, the referee, happens to agree,
- 1:47:07and that will be a 15 yard penalty for unnecessary roughness.
- 1:47:11And they're going to call it, Danelle Daniels, Danelle Daniels, I got to tell you,
- 1:47:16that was a questionable call, but the referee, the officials here want to keep the game under hand,
- 1:47:21so they're going to call this particular play against the generals, unnecessary roughness,
- 1:47:26throwing the ball carrier out of bounds, gives them a little better field position, I might add.
- 1:47:31A lot better field position, now they got the ball in the 27 yard line instead of the fifth,
- 1:47:35well what would that be, 15 yards from there, it'd be about the 12 yard line.
- 1:47:39Math major at Michigan State.
- 1:47:41That's pretty good at that too.
- 1:47:43That's why you're the big executive that you are these days.
- 1:47:47Clark running four and a half to go third quarter.
- 1:47:50Collier back to throw, he's rolling now, and he's throwing, and he completes it to Isolick,
- 1:47:54after the 45 yard line of New Jersey, who flat out beat Bobby Leopold on the play.
- 1:47:59That's just the tight end breaking to the sideline, it's a very tough pattern on a first down play,
- 1:48:03because the strong safety Daniels got to cover him, he gave a little room and he broke it out behind him,
- 1:48:07and he got the pass off. The generals will give him that, they'll keep the play in front of them,
- 1:48:11what they don't want to do now leading 24 to nothing, is to give them the long quick touchdown.
- 1:48:15General's last scoring drive, 6 play 56 yards, all rushing on that, I might add.
- 1:48:21First and 10 for Orlando, their own 45 yard line trailing by 24 points.
- 1:48:27Their backfield is split, Collier rolling right, now he's going to run with it,
- 1:48:32and he's going to step out of bounds with the midfield stripe, he picked up 5 on the play,
- 1:48:36it'll be second and 5, Pope Clemens to Chief DiMattebaro.
- 1:48:39And that was the situation there, Collier would have thrown the football downfield,
- 1:48:42but we've seen consistently throughout this entire season, the deep backs of the general playing very well,
- 1:48:48he did not have that intermediate target, the intermediate receiver, so he ran the football instead,
- 1:48:52and only got himself 5 yards. Now that's another situation that generals can well afford now,
- 1:48:56but again, like Bob said, they don't want to give up the quick touchdown,
- 1:49:00but a thing here Bob, we've never seen a general shut anybody out this year,
- 1:49:03that would be a big mark for them, they can shut this team down completely and not allow any points.
- 1:49:08Well the generals held Portland to 7. That's not a shutout.
- 1:49:12Nope, that was a fourth quarter touchdown if you recall that the Portland club put on the board.
- 1:49:17Here's Collier now, second and 5, rolling and throwing and completing it,
- 1:49:20to Henry Odom out of the backfield to the 44 yard line of New Jersey, and that'll be good.
- 1:49:26For the 11th first down for Orlando, the generals have but 12,
- 1:49:30however the generals had 24 points, Orlando still looking for their first.
- 1:49:35It's not a matter of how many first downs you get, it's a matter of when you get them,
- 1:49:38I mean the generals of course have been much more efficient, not totally,
- 1:49:42but they've been times when they've got the football, they've looked very very well,
- 1:49:45driving the length of the field almost and getting the points they've got.
- 1:49:4838,084 here at Giants Stadium, first Monday night game of the season,
- 1:49:53the generals lead it 24 to nothing.
- 1:49:55Collier with a single setback and flankers to the left and to the right,
- 1:49:58first and 10 at the New Jersey 44, and Collier in rush by Jim Byrne,
- 1:50:03lucky to get the pass away to Nisalick who could not make the catch,
- 1:50:06it'll be third down and 10 to go.
- 1:50:08The first time tonight that the generals got to Reggie Collier,
- 1:50:11and he had to get the ball off as you described it very quickly, but that was an excellent one out,
- 1:50:15one on rush by Jim Byrne.
- 1:50:17I got to tell you Bob though, if Collier was right, all five linemen were wrong,
- 1:50:21and if he was wrong, all five linemen were right,
- 1:50:23he pulled out behind the center much sooner than the rest of the offensive linemen,
- 1:50:26and Byrne just went by his blocking tackle and got there right away.
- 1:50:30That was a miscue out there, and the only thing to save it from going offside was the center,
- 1:50:34feeling that Collier was going to pull away, snap the ball to him,
- 1:50:37everybody was in to keep him from going offside.
- 1:50:39Wilford Morgan along with Joey Walters flank to the right,
- 1:50:43Smith flank to the left on a draw play to Curtis Bledsoe,
- 1:50:48Bledsoe versus way inside the 40 down to the 38 yard line,
- 1:50:52a pick up of six on the play, making a third and four situation for the Orlando Renegades.
- 1:50:57Matias made the tackle, Matias comes in on the passing downs for Big Mr. Weaver
- 1:51:01because he's a little bit quicker and he gives him more of a pass rush.
- 1:51:03That time he made a good play coming off the block thinking it was passed to make the tackle on the draw play.
- 1:51:09They call it third and five, and so we will too, at the 39 yard line, Bledsoe the single setback,
- 1:51:15four wide outs, Wilford Morgan in motion to the near side, Collier back to throw,
- 1:51:20Collier being rushed, throwing behind the back of Jeff Smith at the 35 yard line,
- 1:51:25and so fourth and five setting up what we assume to be a punting situation.
- 1:51:30Well I don't know, he's moving the people in there, but I don't know why,
- 1:51:33when you're down like you are 24 to nothing, why you'd want to bother punting the football,
- 1:51:37and you've got to keep in mind here that this is the first series that the Renegades have had to football,
- 1:51:42and they've burned it off a lot of times, there's only two minutes and 51 seconds left in the third quarter,
- 1:51:46and they are still 40 yards away from a score.
- 1:51:48They did a great job of killing the clock.
- 1:51:50Yes they did.
- 1:51:512.51 left to go third quarter, Generals 24-7.
- 1:51:55Kader standing back at his own 44 yard line, Danny White, Danny Knight awaiting the punt from Kader,
- 1:52:01who is going to look to deposit it in the coffin corner,
- 1:52:04and instead he plops it into the end zone for a touchback the Generals will take over,
- 1:52:09first and 10 to go from their own 20 yard line,
- 1:52:12with two minutes and 44 seconds left in the third quarter, New Jersey 24, Orlando nothing,
- 1:52:17for a giant stadium in the Metalliance, and we'll be right back.

- 1:53:23Generals 24, Orlando no score, 2.44 to go in quarter number three,
- 1:53:29in a game that actually isn't as close as the scoreboard indicates.
- 1:53:33Actually it could well have been 31 to nothing or more,
- 1:53:37as the Generals fumbled away a touchdown opportunity late in the first half.
- 1:53:42So now the Generals first and 10 for their own 20.
- 1:53:44Walker the single setback, Herschel with 130 yards already.
- 1:53:48Here's a naked bootleg for Flutie, and Flutie is out to the 30 yard line,
- 1:53:52and it's good for the first down, 10 yards.
- 1:53:54Very surprised though, I think that that is not exactly what 12 Michaels wants.
- 1:53:58Doug Flutie tonight has taken upon himself when he bootlegs to run with the football
- 1:54:02and stay in bounds a little bit longer than Walt would like.
- 1:54:04That time he took a chance, he got a hit from West the linebacker, got good yardage,
- 1:54:08but I think he's got to realize he's got to slide and get out of bounds.
- 1:54:12Well, maybe he's got seven guys in the line to scrimmage, all four defensive linemen, all linebackers.
- 1:54:16Figured if he got to that point and broke that plane, he might get some yards.
- 1:54:20He did get some yards, but that's a tough way of getting for a quarterback.
- 1:54:22Flutie seven carries, 68 yards tonight.
- 1:54:24Generals first and 10 at their own 30 yard line, hand off to Carthage off left end,
- 1:54:30and he picks up about three yards on the play, and the tackle is made by Harold Randolph,
- 1:54:35the left side linebacker, presenting the Generals with a second and seven situation at their own 33.
- 1:54:40Carthage is really a fullback.
- 1:54:42You know, he doesn't have the speed, of course, that a Herschel Walker's got,
- 1:54:45but he's a durable kid, a durable guy.
- 1:54:47He's a guy you can count on, he's not going to fumble the football.
- 1:54:49Herschel doesn't fumble the football.
- 1:54:51Given the situation, he's only fumbled twice in all, in this whole season.
- 1:54:54There's many times he's carried, but that walk, I mean, that mole carter is really a good,
- 1:54:58good fullback, complimenting Herschel Walker.
- 1:55:00Seven carries, 29 yards for current.
- 1:55:03Generals second and eight from the 32, Flutie back to throw, throwing on the run,
- 1:55:06and throwing it in front of Sam Bowers.
- 1:55:09It bounced in front of Bowers by about five yards.
- 1:55:12Bowers coming from the left side, coming down from the right side, running upfield
- 1:55:15and then breaking it about 18 yards from the sideline.
- 1:55:18It was a little too deep and Flutie threw the ball going towards the sideline.
- 1:55:21Should have got upfield a little more.
- 1:55:22He didn't have enough on it and it fell short.
- 1:55:24Well, it fell short.
- 1:55:25There was a lot of defenders out there, and probably it's a good thing it did fall short.
- 1:55:28That's one of the first times we've seen in the last two or three ball games.
- 1:55:32Doug Flutie trying to force the action, trying to force the ball in there
- 1:55:35when the coverage was pretty good for the opposition.
- 1:55:38Carthen takes a powder, and Clarence Harmon checks into the lineup for the first time tonight.
- 1:55:42Marcus Anderson and Danny Knight are the wide outs.
- 1:55:45Charles Sturdy from the 32, and Flutie is back to throw.
- 1:55:49Generals, I believe, jumped the gun.
- 1:55:51Flutie throwing in and out of the hands of Herschel Walker at the 37 yard line,
- 1:55:55and Flutie got patted pretty good after the pass was off.
- 1:56:01The defensive end, Kellan, came in and made the play.
- 1:56:04Sam Bowers jumped offside.
- 1:56:05And I think they're going to call on number 64, Wayne Harris, also.
- 1:56:08So they had a miscue out there as did the Renegades when they had the football.
- 1:56:14Apparently declined when they had the football.
- 1:56:16There was a miscue out there between the center and his offensive line
- 1:56:19because two guys were offside.
- 1:56:20Sam Bowers with one arm, and Wayne Harris with a right offensive guard move
- 1:56:23before the snap himself.
- 1:56:25Here's Rick Partridge, who is averaging 39 yards per punt this season.
- 1:56:29One punt tonight for 36 yards.
- 1:56:32And Victor Jackson is standing back in his own 25 yard line.
- 1:56:36Clock running 55 seconds ago in the third quarter.
- 1:56:39Generals with a cushy 24 to nothing lead.
- 1:56:45Awaiting the snap from center is Partridge.
- 1:56:49Big rush, but he's able to get the kick away.
- 1:56:52And Jackson feels it at the 30.
- 1:56:55Cuts it to 35 yard line, and he pummelled the ball out of bounds at the 40 yard line
- 1:57:00where Orlando will take over first and 10 at their own 40
- 1:57:03with 33 seconds to go in quarter number three.
- 1:57:06Generals lead 24 to nothing at Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands.
- 1:57:10We'll be back on the New Jersey Generals football network.
- 1:57:13MUSIC
- 1:57:37Rising above the sea stimulates like nothing you've ever experienced.
- 1:57:48And best of all, this place is right in the center of the action.
- 1:57:57Come see for yourself, Trump Plaza.
- 1:58:03It's Atlantic City's centerpiece. Yeah!
- 1:58:08MUSIC
- 1:58:22Donald Trump will be joining us in the Generals broadcast booth a little bit later on tonight.
- 1:58:27There are 33 seconds left in the third quarter.
- 1:58:31Generals lead 24 to nothing.
- 1:58:33Orlando with the ball, first and 10 at their own 40 yard line.
- 1:58:38Backfield is split.
- 1:58:42Collier back to throw, throwing to Nisalick the tight end at the 44 yard line of Orlando.
- 1:58:49Pick up a four on the play.
- 1:58:51It'll be second down and six to go.
- 1:58:54Right here is where Reggie Collier has got to get that ball downfield,
- 1:58:58but he doesn't have the confidence nor can he find the people open.
- 1:59:02Again, it's a tribute to the Generals deep backfield.
- 1:59:05They've done very well and tonight they're missing their strong safety.
- 1:59:08John Preston and he's been amply substituted for, and the Generals continue to play strong defense.
- 1:59:13Well, the gutters just sounded to end quarter number three.
- 1:59:18And the Generals still lead 24 to nothing here at Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands and we'll be back.
- 1:59:25Organize a group from your church, synagogue, fraternal group or club and come see a Generals home game.
- 1:59:30See Doug Flutie, record-breaking Herschel Walker and all the playoff hungry Generals in person at Giants Stadium.
- 1:59:35Sunday, May 12, Mother's Day at 2.30, Star Wars against the 84 champion Baltimore Stars.
- 1:59:41Saturday night, June 1st at 7 o'clock, the Generals host the Memphis Showboats
- 1:59:45with the USFL's number one passer, Walter Lewis.
- 1:59:48For group reservations call Tom Medeiros at 1-800-KICKOFF.
- 1:59:53Reach for the star, do you trust your car?
- 1:59:56Reach for the star, hear the products with the star.
- 2:00:00Reach for the star, the big, bright Texaco star.
- 2:00:05If your car knocks, it's probably undernourished, so put it on a diet.
- 2:00:09Texaco's super unleaded diet. It's got higher octane than regular unleaded to help knock out the knocks.
- 2:00:15Reach for the star, the big, bright Texaco star.
- 2:00:20Reach for the star, the big, bright Texaco star.
- 2:00:23Welcome back to quarter number four in a game that the Generals have had in control from the outset.
- 2:00:33It is 24 for New Jersey, NADA for the Orlando Renegades.
- 2:00:38They really haven't shown very much and their record coming into the game was two and seven.
- 2:00:43All things being equal in about a half hour, they'll be two and eight.
- 2:00:47Charlie, the Renegades have not shown much tonight, but in the last month of the season they've shown more offense against other teams.
- 2:00:53Teams like the Jacksonville Bulls who beat them last week, but they moved the ball against them.
- 2:00:57Those are the kind of things that make this General's effort tonight and over the last month so important
- 2:01:01because once they get against teams that have been playing comparable opponents,
- 2:01:05you get a good line on how much the Generals have improved this year.
- 2:01:09Generals really have shown a steady improvement over the last month.
- 2:01:13And next Sunday we are in Jacksonville where they are expecting fairly close to a sellout in Jacksonville.
- 2:01:22They are expecting somewhere between 70 and 80,000 for this game.
- 2:01:26And of course when we were in Jacksonville a year ago, 73,000 to this date, the largest crowd in the history of the USFL.
- 2:01:33Second and six for the Renegades at their own 44 yard line.
- 2:01:37First play, fourth quarter, Kier back to throw, Kier throwing, sideline for Jackie Flowers.
- 2:01:42They've got to go deep because they're trailing 24-0.
- 2:01:45They're in the fourth period. They've got to get some points if they want to get back in this ballgame.
- 2:01:49Oh, we saw Donald Disney, the owner of the Orlando Renegades at halftime.
- 2:01:54Not terribly pleased about the way his team has been playing, but happy like all of the other owners, save one,
- 2:02:00about the outcome of the USFL meetings today.
- 2:02:03Pass to Joey Walters is incomplete, but there is a flag on the play at the 49 yard line of New Jersey.
- 2:02:10And it looks like Jerry Holmes has been assessed with holding.
- 2:02:13Yeah, Jerry Holmes of course being completely on the other side of the field from where the ball was thrown,
- 2:02:19Kaya threw it over to his right on the left side.
- 2:02:22And he's holding and that is an automatic first down.
- 2:02:27You know how he plays the deep play. He plays it like he used to in the old AFL where they had that bump and run protection.
- 2:02:33Oakland Raiders played it so very well. They put the...
- 2:02:36In fact, Oakland still does it, the Los Angeles Raiders now put that man right on that receiver and let him foul him foot step for step.
- 2:02:43That's what Jerry Holmes was playing like over here.
- 2:02:45Got caught for holding a good 40 yards away from where the ball ended up.
- 2:02:50Flowers, Walters, Smith and Morgan, four wide outs for Orlando.
- 2:02:55First and 10, they're on 49 yard line, 30 seconds into the fourth quarter.
- 2:02:59Kaya back to throw. Kaya is popped as he gets right to the ball.
- 2:03:02And it is nearly intercepted by Jerry Holmes, but the pass was out of bounds.
- 2:03:07See, this is the problem with Jerry, with Reggie Kaya. Reggie Kaya is a great athlete, but he is not a great passer.
- 2:03:12He does not have the touch that's necessary to bring a club back like this.
- 2:03:16And that time he had a receiver open, but he just couldn't get him the football.
- 2:03:19He was also being rushed pretty good by Bobby Leopold.
- 2:03:22And Frank Matias.
- 2:03:24Matias was all over Kaya as well.
- 2:03:26If you're Jerry Goldstein, what do you think? It's 24 to nothing fourth quarter and you still haven't played.
- 2:03:31That means you're really second team, right?
- 2:03:36That's really second team.
- 2:03:38And if you're Steve Bazarkowitz, there's no way Jose.
- 2:03:42It's second and 10 at the 49 yard line.
- 2:03:45Kaya is going to be sacked by Bobby Leopold.
- 2:03:48Kaya stumbled as he took the snap from center.
- 2:03:51Never stood a chance and Leopold was all over him, like ugly on an ape.
- 2:03:58Bobby Leopold helped him to the ground so he wouldn't hurt himself when he fell.
- 2:04:02Oh, that's terrible. Okay.
- 2:04:04That's two sacks on the evening.
- 2:04:06That's two sacks on the evening for the Generals against the quarterback, Reggie Kaya.
- 2:04:11Well, I reckon at 24 to nothing this constitutes a life for a long about here with 14 minutes left in the game and the clock running.
- 2:04:17It becomes a chuckle. But you know how close it was right before the half? It could have been 10 to 7.
- 2:04:22Could have. Could have. Could have. What does it could have? Something we lived with the first year.
- 2:04:26Third and 20 for Orlando at their own 39.
- 2:04:31This time Kaya ran out of the shotgun. This time Kaya is just able to get rid of the ball.
- 2:04:35And it's intercepted by Gregory Johnson.
- 2:04:38Johnson returns it to the 44 yard line of the Jersey.
- 2:04:42And Reggie Kaya was splattered at the 34 yard line and he is face down on the Giants Stadium turf.
- 2:04:50And you also have a flag at this end against Orlando.
- 2:04:53They're going to get caught for spearing Greg Johnson on his return.
- 2:04:58I got to tell you it was Freddie Gilbert coming in number 90 coming in from his left end right defensive end position.
- 2:05:05And really hit Kaya in the blind side.
- 2:05:08A very legitimate play because Kaya was just in the process of throwing the football and was hit while he was throwing the football.
- 2:05:15And went down and he's still down on the field.
- 2:05:18He was blindsided as Dave said by Freddie Gilbert and they are attending to him right now.
- 2:05:25We have a break in the action. 13 minutes 42 seconds to go on the game.
- 2:05:29Generals 24. Orlando nothing. We're at Giants Stadium. The mental answer will be right back.
- 2:05:34Why go to an old worn out place in Atlantic City when you can go to the hot new place in town.
- 2:05:53Trump Plaza Hotel Casino.
- 2:05:57A glittering world of glass, brass and class.
- 2:06:11And best of all this place is right in the center of the action.
- 2:06:21Come see for yourself Trump Plaza.
- 2:06:27It's Atlantic City's centerpiece. Yeah.
- 2:06:37Seated in section 117.
- 2:06:40With the Tweety birds circling Reggie Kaya's head he is walking off the field ever so slowly now.
- 2:06:46But for those who don't like the balance of football he is walking off the field.
- 2:06:51So the Generals have the ball first and 10 at the Orlando 39 following the interception by Gregory Johnson.
- 2:06:59An additional 15 yards tacked on the flag as a result of a spearing penalty assessed to Joel Patton the right tackle against Johnson on the return.
- 2:07:09So it's the Generals first and 10 at the Orlando 40 yard line. Walker and Carthen split in the backfield.
- 2:07:16Marcus Anderson is in the lineup along with Danny Knight as your wide receivers.
- 2:07:20Hand out to Carthen straight ahead. Carthen to the 37 yard line and a pick up of three on the play.
- 2:07:26Let's call it second down and seven yards to go. Scott Hutchinson and David Graham getting off the pot.
- 2:07:32I think the question now is how long into this fourth quarter will Michaels will go with Flutie and Walker and Carthen before he gets them out knowing what's ahead of him over the next month of the season.
- 2:07:42Well to answer Dave Herman's question of a few minutes ago. Oh we go. Oh my goodness.
- 2:07:48We got the muddle huddle. Tower.
- 2:07:51Oh it's a little screen pass that Carthen dropped and then he picked up. It's an incomplete pass.
- 2:07:58Well we haven't seen that in a while. The old muddle huddle with only Kent Hall over the ball. Seven players all over to the left side.
- 2:08:06And behind that wall was Maurice Carthen. It would have been a great play except one thing. Carthen dropped the ball.
- 2:08:12Well it was and I'll tell you why I dropped it too because the ball was thrown low and Doug Flutie got the ball from Kent Hall the center.
- 2:08:18He was way high so Doug had to jump up in the air come down get his footing set throw it over there threw it low.
- 2:08:24It was just a mixture play anyhow. It was nothing else but a mix up play. Walt wants his opposition down the road to look at these things.
- 2:08:30It works for me in Central Park. 12-50 to go. Fourth quarter. General's 24th. Third and eight at the 38 yard line.
- 2:08:37Flutie back to throw. Throw it quickly. Oh come on.
- 2:08:41By Jeff George. George has got nothing but real estate in front of him. George put back at the 25. Still on his feet at the 20.
- 2:08:4815 yard line and he is down inside the 10 yard line. He fumbled the ball. He fumbled the ball and Doug Flutie picked it up.
- 2:08:56He was down. Jeff George with a big interception and there is an injured Orlando Renegade all the way back at their own 40 yard line.
- 2:09:07But the Renegades have the ball towards first and goal at the seven yard line.
- 2:09:14Well I guess it is alright to have a little fun out there. But what really takes the concentration off of your football team and then Doug like we said so often has not been forcing the football and he absolutely did force the football in that last play.
- 2:09:28And a big turnover for the Washington, I mean Washington Federal. They look at the Federal. Orlando Renegades and they are held now have an opportunity to put some points on the board.
- 2:09:37So the Renegades have the ball first and goal at the eight yard line.
- 2:09:45Generals however with a commanding 24 to nothing lead with 12 minutes and 35 seconds left in the football game.
- 2:09:54It was a 57 yard return for George and that was his fourth interception of the year.
- 2:10:02Well the backs into the wall now. What they are playing for now Charlie and like I said before they haven't had to shut out thus far this year and what they are playing for now is to shut out and it is really close to being away from them.
- 2:10:15Orlando has football and creaked their position and have an opportunity of making some points here. Not at all concerned about winning the football game just getting some points on the board.
- 2:10:24We go back to that muddle huddle play and the high snap from center. Dave Lapham has come in at center through that entire series. So you had the veteran coming in for Kent Hull and he was the guy that was in there when that ball was a little high but flew as he tried to get it over to Cartham.
- 2:10:38Joining us in the General's Broadcast booth now is the owner of the Generals Donald Trump and we have had virtually all of the owners come through the Broadcast booth tonight.
- 2:10:50Donald let me ask you first and foremost about your reaction to the meeting today and obviously you are pleased going to the fall beginning in 1986.
- 2:11:00Well I am very pleased. I believe in fall football. I like class whatever it might be and football is meant to be played in the fall.
- 2:11:07We have done amazingly well with the Generals. Our attendance is way up from last year and way way up from the year before last.
- 2:11:13But I know that we are even going to do better. I don't know if you just heard but we made a little slight challenge to our NFL neighbors and I want to see whether or not they can stop Doug Fruity and Herschel Walker.
- 2:11:23What is that challenge with both Giants and Jets?
- 2:11:26Well it's a little it's a charity and we will see what happens really at the appropriate time but you can't challenge when we are playing in different seasons and we will have plenty of challenges in the fall.
- 2:11:36I guess you will.
- 2:11:37We will be back with Donald just about. Jerry Goldstein is now in his quarterback. Reggie Collier got his bell rung pretty good in the last series of plays.
- 2:11:45First in goal from the eighth. Goldstein back to throw. Throwing quickly for Jackie Flowers. Touchdown Orlando but hold the phone.
- 2:11:53Flag on the play in the end zone and I think Joey Walters is going to be called for offensive interference.
- 2:11:59Yes he is. That's exactly the call.
- 2:12:01Flag on the play.
- 2:12:04This is Bill Perkinson the referee.
- 2:12:07Interference on the offense number 17.
- 2:12:09Touchdown.
- 2:12:10Absolutely. That's exactly the call Charlie. Joey Walters even though he wasn't involved in call for offensive pass interference and he did set touchdown a big break for the Generals as far as their shutout that goes.
- 2:12:24So it will be second down and goal from the 18 yard line a loss of down.
- 2:12:32The other question Donald that immediately comes to mind. Where will the Generals play?
- 2:12:36At the Meadowlands. We fully expect to play at the Meadowlands. We're working with the officials right now and they've been super to us and the fans have been just incredible out here and we're going to be right at the Meadowlands.
- 2:12:47Goldstein out of the shotgun throwing in the end zone for Joey Walters. Touchdown. Oh what a brilliant catch by Joey Walters in the corner of the end zone.
- 2:12:57The fact that he was able to keep both feet in bounds with that catch quite a story hidden of itself.
- 2:13:03And finally Orlando is on the board but the Generals still lead 24 to 6.
- 2:13:08Outstanding throw out there a pass out there I should say by Jerry Goldstein the quarterback replacing Reggie Collier and put the ball right over the top of Walters shoulders and he came down inside.
- 2:13:20Had to position when he caught the ball all you had to do was have position inside the end zone and you get to 7 points.
- 2:13:28And so we've got Jeff Brockhouse who came through the Generals camp from time to time with the extra point trying to half our Orlando to snap the place to kick his up and he's good.
- 2:13:41And we have a break in the action 11 53 to go on the football game. Generals 24 Orlando 7. We'll be back with more with Donald Trump and more of the football game in just a minute from the Meadowlands.
- 2:13:52We'll be back on the New Jersey Generals football network.
- 2:13:55Happy birthday Thunderbird. That's right it's T-Birds birthday but you get to open the presents right now during your four dealers Thunderbird birthday party you can save hundreds on every new Ford car truck and stock.

- 2:14:57The
- 2:15:02Jeff Brockhouse making his way toward the football to squid kick fielded by Rod Pequeza to 10 yard line.
- 2:15:13He said his 10 yard line Pequeza straight ahead to the 15 20 to the 30 yard line brought down at the 31 where it'll be first and tend to go generals leading 24 to 7 11 45 to go in quarter number four and there is a flag on the play and apparently off sides against Orlando.
- 2:15:31They're having problems getting the kickoff right now they had a lot of problems coming in here and not many of them got solved as far tonight.
- 2:15:38I think not in any event back to the matters at hand with Donald Trump.
- 2:15:43It seemed as if coming out of the meeting today or at least going into the meeting.
- 2:15:48Nobody really seemed to be quite sure what the outcome would be but it seemed like you all came out as a fairly united front.
- 2:15:53Well I was pretty sure and I'd read these reports and I don't know where the reporters got their information because it's a 10 teams wanted to go to the spring and I knew that they didn't.
- 2:16:03But I read what I read.
- 2:16:05First and 10 for the generals at their own 32 yard line Walker and Carthen line up in the high formation.
- 2:16:11Clued a calling signals one flanker off to the left side.
- 2:16:14Clued in his to Herschel running left in front of Mo Carthike Walker turning the corner and his run out of bounds at the 38 yard line.
- 2:16:22A pick up a six on the play.
- 2:16:24Harold Randolph ran him out.
- 2:16:25It'll be second down and four to go.
- 2:16:28Now the question becomes where will you be televised and what days of the week will you be able to play here at Giant Stadium.
- 2:16:37Well as you know we have Sunday and we have an exemption to play on Saturday and the Saturday exemption is very important.
- 2:16:42There is a very vital vital situation and we have that we have the option of playing during the week Sunday evenings but that Saturday day and maybe Friday evenings we have some wonderful times to play.
- 2:16:54General second and three at their own 39 yard line leading 24 7 with 11 minutes 15 seconds to go on the game.
- 2:17:01Walker first his way straight ahead.
- 2:17:03He's got the first down and then some brought down at the 44 yard line.
- 2:17:07Let's be enjoying watching Herschel run this year.
- 2:17:09Well he's the greatest.
- 2:17:10I mean he could be the greatest of all time.
- 2:17:12And as you know we made that little challenge before to our neighbors and I'd like to see them try and stop her trying to stop her to walk.
- 2:17:18It would be very interesting.
- 2:17:20I got to know not too many people that had success trying to stop her to walk her throughout this entire year and you know they give their defense for it and they're not that successful.
- 2:17:31Hershel is just an outstanding football player.
- 2:17:33Walker 21 carries 146 yards clock running 10 35 to go on the game.
- 2:17:38General 24 7 first and 10 for their own 45.
- 2:17:42Flutie back to throw Flutie with time going long down the field for Danny night the overthrow of 20 yards.
- 2:17:47There was a mix up on that play.
- 2:17:48I think Knight was trying to run a post corner and instead of breaking back out to the sideline where Flutie put the ball he stayed on the post course.
- 2:17:55And that's part of the problem.
- 2:17:56Danny Knight has not seen much action of late as an offensive receiver for the general second and 10 at the 45 yard line.
- 2:18:03As far as television is concerned Donald a lot of people are going to wonder where and how they're going to be able to see the games and where and how you all going to make some money.
- 2:18:11Well you have a lot of options coming up and you have a very good chance for an NFL strike as an example in 1987.
- 2:18:16And I think after the monopoly stops in terms of 1986 hopefully we'll stop with the networks.
- 2:18:21We'll have our options with the networks also.
- 2:18:24Second and 10 at the 45 yard line.
- 2:18:26Flutie out of the shotgun.
- 2:18:28Flutie with time setting up a screen for Walker.
- 2:18:31Walker dipsy doodles at the 40 and he goes down at the 40 yard line.
- 2:18:34Flag on the play however a loss of five if the play stands but there is a flag on the play.
- 2:18:40The flag is against Vince Strode.
- 2:18:41The left guard who got downfield about five yards before the play was the pass was completed.
- 2:18:47With the loss on it it will be interesting to see what Orlando decides to do.
- 2:18:52Downfield.
- 2:18:53It's a loss of down.
- 2:18:54All right so that will set up a third down and long for New Jersey.
- 2:19:01Donald as far as TV however at the moment obviously no network for 86.
- 2:19:07How then does the league plan to get the games with stadium to hold.
- 2:19:12What seems to be happening we've had tremendous offers of great syndications.
- 2:19:17We also have interest from certain networks although you're going to find that a little bit strange to hear.
- 2:19:23But we have some very interesting things cooking Charlie and I think you're going to be finding out over the relatively short period of time.
- 2:19:28It's a lot of interest in the league.
- 2:19:30So the generals now third and 20 back at their own 35 yard line.
- 2:19:34Herschel the single setback and he gets a handoff on a little drop like Walker versus way over the 45 to the 48 yard line.
- 2:19:42They'll be well short of the first down but Walker picks up another 13 yards so he's up to about a hundred and fifty nine on twenty two.
- 2:19:52He has a great ability when he doesn't have to take a guy.
- 2:19:55He can drop his shoulder and slip between the tacklers.
- 2:19:58But then when he does take a guy on they really pay for it.
- 2:20:01Herschel Walker is playing at one of his better games here again tonight.
- 2:20:04Clock continues to run nine minutes and 20 seconds left.
- 2:20:08Partridge with a high floating punt.
- 2:20:11Victor Jackson will be forced to fair catch all the way back at his 13 yard line.
- 2:20:15Breaking the action 916 to go in the game.
- 2:20:18Generals 24 Orlando 7 for a giant stadium in the middle lands and we'll be back in a minute.
- 2:20:25Hey Cab.
- 2:20:27Bob Hope.
- 2:20:28Hi.
- 2:20:29Better put on these earmuffs to drown out the engine knocks.
- 2:20:33Hey you don't need earmuffs you need star power.
- 2:20:36Texaco star power the higher octane and Texaco super unleaded that can help knock out the knocks.
- 2:20:42Hey Cab.
- 2:20:44Hello again Mr. Hope.
- 2:20:45You know the engine's so quiet now I can tell you some of my jokes.
- 2:20:49You still have those earmuffs?
- 2:20:50Star power the higher octane.
- 2:21:20Smooth rides get a set of gas cushion Delco performer shocks.
- 2:21:23AC Delco the smart parts.
- 2:21:26Available at Burack Chevrolet and Olds 15 boot and turn pipe in Lincoln Park.
- 2:21:35Nine minutes 16 seconds left in the game.
- 2:21:37Generals 24 Orlando 7 renegades with the ball first and 10 all the way back to their own 14 yard line.
- 2:21:44Since the loss in Arizona the generals really have come of age.
- 2:21:48I guess Donald you have to be awfully pleased the way this team has been looking.
- 2:21:51Not only is the fact that they are winning but the way they have been winning.
- 2:21:54They've been looking super but they've been giving the ball to Herschel Walker.
- 2:21:57That was a game that was very frightening in the sense that they didn't give the ball.
- 2:22:01You go ahead with the play.
- 2:22:02Alright Goldstein back to throw throwing over the middle and he completes it to Joey Walters to the 35 yard line.
- 2:22:07Not a bad color guy either.
- 2:22:09Bob Hope get the play by play and you got it and you're back again.
- 2:22:12Nobody to compete with you two gentlemen.
- 2:22:15You got other things right.
- 2:22:18Anyway but the way the generals have played up both sides of the football certainly Herschel has been a story.
- 2:22:24But the offensive line has come on and done the job and defensively now they're beginning to get the other guys out.
- 2:22:29They've really been super they've been great the fans love them.
- 2:22:32Goldstein now out of the shotgun first and 10 Orlando at their own 35 yard line.
- 2:22:37Goldstein with time to throw throwing long down the sideline for Jackie Flowers.
- 2:22:43But the pass is out of bounds and thus incomplete.
- 2:22:46It'll be second down and 10 at the 35 yard line.
- 2:22:50So all in all you have to be terribly pleased with the way things turned out today.
- 2:22:54Well Charlie as you and Dave know before I had this team it was really a disaster.
- 2:22:58You had some long long days up here and the fans had lost interest in it frankly.
- 2:23:02They were losing and they were losing big.
- 2:23:04And we put some players in there and we have an excellent coach and an excellent group of people.
- 2:23:09And they are they are looking pretty tough.
- 2:23:11They've been a tough team for two years.
- 2:23:13Well I don't know they sure have.
- 2:23:15Second and 10 at the 35 yard line once again Goldstein out of the shotgun with full wide outs.
- 2:23:20Goldstein back to throw throwing sideline incomplete intended for Joey Walters at the midfield stripe.
- 2:23:26But tipped away at the last second by Janelle Daniel.
- 2:23:29And you've got a flag on the play here probably holding against Orlando.
- 2:23:32Goldstein strictly a drop back passer.
- 2:23:34It was not holding Bob it was in tip.
- 2:23:36Roughing the passer after the ball was thrown.
- 2:23:38The generals are coming into it and that's all they're playing now.
- 2:23:41The passing situation trying their best to get there.
- 2:23:44That time they had an end tackle game the tackle stunted outside the defensive end.
- 2:23:48Freddie Gilbert come up on the inside and after Goldstein at least it was determined by the official.
- 2:23:52After he threw the football he was hit knocked to the ground.
- 2:23:55They called it an unnecessary ruffles to the passer.
- 2:23:58Given the first down on the 50 yard line right in the middle of the field.
- 2:24:01They intentionally grounded Goldstein.
- 2:24:03Yes they did.
- 2:24:04Postgame phone show coming up immediately following our broadcast at 212489 WMCA.
- 2:24:10212489 WMCA and of course we welcome the calls from Boston over WMRE.
- 2:24:16745 to go.
- 2:24:18First to 10 from the 50.
- 2:24:19Goldstein back to throw.
- 2:24:20He completes it to Nisalick the tight end at the 45 yard line of New Jersey.
- 2:24:24A pick up of five on the play.
- 2:24:25It'll be second down and five yards to go.
- 2:24:28Chicago will be back in the league next year.
- 2:24:32Is that right Donald?
- 2:24:33They will be back in the league next year Charlie and we have a great owner Eddie Einhorn.
- 2:24:37And he's got a group and they own the as you know they own the White Sox.
- 2:24:40And they've been very positive.
- 2:24:43They only want full football.
- 2:24:45And apparently that's what they're going to get.
- 2:24:47That's what they're going to be getting.
- 2:24:48But minus however the Tampa Bay Bandits.
- 2:24:51Well I think that's a positive as far as I'm concerned.
- 2:24:54Alright we'll get back to that in a minute.
- 2:24:55Second and four from the 44 yard line.
- 2:24:57Goldstein back to throw.
- 2:24:58Goldstein with time.
- 2:25:00Pitching it long downfield and nobody in particular.
- 2:25:02The closest man to the football was Gregory Johnson all the way back at the five yard line.
- 2:25:08The closest intended receiver Jerry Parrish is about 20 yards off the ball.
- 2:25:13Great play by Jerry Holmes though.
- 2:25:15There's the difference on the corner.
- 2:25:16Jerry Holmes held up both Parrish and Joey Walters.
- 2:25:19Did not permit him to get deep.
- 2:25:20Goldstein threw the ball away.
- 2:25:22Now as far as the Tampa Bay Bandits are concerned.
- 2:25:24They were drawing pretty well down there.
- 2:25:26Yet for reasons that John Bassett can best describe.
- 2:25:30He has opted to stay in the springtime.
- 2:25:33And at the moment I guess he's guaranteed of a playoff spot next spring.
- 2:25:36Because he's going to be the only one playing there.
- 2:25:38We'll talk about that in a second.
- 2:25:39On third and fourth the 44 yard line.
- 2:25:41Goldstein is back to throw.
- 2:25:43Goldstein with time.
- 2:25:44Lots of time.
- 2:25:45Throwing it out of the backfield.
- 2:25:46It is nearly intercepted by Bobby Leopold at the 39 yard line.
- 2:25:51That'll be fourth and four from the 44.
- 2:25:53Back to your thoughts about Tampa Bay and Bassett.
- 2:25:55Well John Bassett's got his.
- 2:25:56He's really got his own agenda frankly.
- 2:25:58And John is one of the founders of the World Football League.
- 2:26:02And we haven't been losers in life.
- 2:26:04And we don't intend to be.
- 2:26:05And frankly John is at this moment.
- 2:26:07John is just the spring man.
- 2:26:09And he felt strongly about the World Football League.
- 2:26:11He feels strongly about spring football.
- 2:26:14And that's all I can say.
- 2:26:16And so on that third and four pass situation.
- 2:26:19It was holding against the general's defensive holding.
- 2:26:22It's a five yard penalty.
- 2:26:24Automatic first down.
- 2:26:25So it's Orlando first and 10 at the general 40 yard line.
- 2:26:30Generals lead 24 to 7 with six minutes 35 seconds to go in the game.
- 2:26:34And the clock continues to run.
- 2:26:36Now they're in the high formation.
- 2:26:38Interestingly enough Goldstein is back to throw.
- 2:26:40Throwing a fly pattern for Joey Walters.
- 2:26:42And in and out of Walters hands at the five yard line.
- 2:26:45Step for step Jerry Holtz.
- 2:26:48Donald I can understand why and how football.
- 2:26:52You mentioned that one window you have open this Saturday afternoon.
- 2:26:55I can understand how it would be accepted here in New York.
- 2:26:58Maybe in Chicago.
- 2:26:59But how about Birmingham and some of those cities where college football seems to reign supreme.
- 2:27:04What's your research tell you about that?
- 2:27:06I believe it's not research it's instinct.
- 2:27:07And I believe from my own standpoint they'll do better.
- 2:27:10Now they've been doing certain teams have done very well.
- 2:27:12Certain of the Sunbell teams have done very well.
- 2:27:14As well as they've done they'll do better in the traditional football season.
- 2:27:18Okay.
- 2:27:19Johnny here we go again.
- 2:27:20Shotgun formation.
- 2:27:22Second and ten from the 40 yard line.
- 2:27:24Parish in motion to the far side.
- 2:27:26Goldstein back to throw.
- 2:27:27Goldstein with time throwing sideline.
- 2:27:29Incomplete intended for Wilford Morgan at the 35 yard line.
- 2:27:33And once again Jerry Holtz is all over his man.
- 2:27:37He's become a one man show hasn't he Bob?
- 2:27:39Well the story we've said all season is that Jerry Holtz has caught this defensive secondary together.
- 2:27:46The confidence he has the experience and everybody plays to his level.
- 2:27:49That's the difference.
- 2:27:50Jerry Holtz just runs he has the instincts as Donald Trump talks about instincts.
- 2:27:54He has the instincts to play defense as well as anybody I've seen in this league.
- 2:27:58Orlando third and ten at the 40.
- 2:28:01At the general 40 yard line.
- 2:28:03Parish in motion to the far side.
- 2:28:05Goldstein out of the shotgun.
- 2:28:06Goldstein being chased.
- 2:28:08Goldstein being sacked all the way back at the 49 yard line.
- 2:28:12It was Freddie Gilbert.
- 2:28:14Frank Maddie's.
- 2:28:15Bobby Leopold.
- 2:28:16And Kim Byrne getting off the pot.
- 2:28:18Bobby Leopold coming from his linebacker position.
- 2:28:21He don't see Bobby Leopold that often.
- 2:28:24And he came through Scott Free again a mix up on that offensive line.
- 2:28:27They've got to pick them all up from the inside out.
- 2:28:29And he obviously didn't let Leopold come Scott Free through there.
- 2:28:32And he threw the quarterback Jerry Goldstein down for a big loss.
- 2:28:35That is the general's third sack of the evening.
- 2:28:38The Jersey 24 Orlando 7.
- 2:28:40Six minutes left in the game.
- 2:28:42Frank catered a punted away fourth and 21.
- 2:28:45Linus Grimmage Orlando's 49 yard line.
- 2:28:48Good snap from center.
- 2:28:49Cater angling it for the side.
- 2:28:52It bounces at the 10 and Danny Knight fields it on one hop.
- 2:28:55And Danny Knight is still on his feet.
- 2:28:57Finally he goes down at the 14 yard line.
- 2:29:00I expect Danny Knight had it to do over again.
- 2:29:02He would have let it bounce.
- 2:29:03Well I don't know.
- 2:29:04He did let the thing bounce Charlie.
- 2:29:05But a good heads up play on his part.
- 2:29:07Got the ball from the back down inside the 10 yard line.
- 2:29:11He brought it back as far as he could.
- 2:29:12Breaking the action 5.
- 2:29:1349 to go quarter number four.
- 2:29:15General's 24 Orlando 7.
- 2:29:17We're at Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands.
- 2:29:19And we'll be back on the New Jersey General's football network.
- 2:29:23Are you concerned about the cost of heating or cooling your home?
- 2:29:26If you are, PSE&G, Public Service Electric and Gas Company of New Jersey has a solution.
- 2:29:31PSE&G will send an energy specialist to check out your home from basement to attic to look for energy leaks.
- 2:29:37You'll then receive a computerized report on exactly where your home is losing energy and what you can do about it.
- 2:29:42Cost of the service only $15.
- 2:29:44With the report you also receive a free energy savings kit so you can begin to stop those energy leaks right now.
- 2:29:50Call the PSE&G Energy Conservation Center toll free at 1-800-854-4444 and ask about the home energy survey.
- 2:29:59And look for more information about the survey in this month's public service mailing.
- 2:30:03Remember the number to call is 1-800-854-4444.
- 2:30:071-800-854-4444.
- 2:30:1157, WMCA, New York.
- 2:30:225.49 to go on the game.
- 2:30:24Generals lead it 24 to 7.
- 2:30:26Donald Trump, thank you again for stopping up in the booth and good luck in the fall of 86.
- 2:30:31Thank you very much, Charlie.
- 2:30:32We appreciate you guys doing a fabulous job for us and we appreciate it very much.
- 2:30:36Thank you very much.
- 2:30:37Donald Trump, very much in the news these days.
- 2:30:41Generals now with the ball first and 10 back in their own 15 yard line.
- 2:30:45Hand off to Moe Carthon off left tackle.
- 2:30:47Carthon pulling his way to the 21 yard line, a pick up of 6.
- 2:30:50Second down and 4 to go.
- 2:30:51Bernard West, right side linebacker out of North Texas State made the tackle.
- 2:30:56Now we've got substitutions in the game for the Generals on offense.
- 2:30:59At center we have Dave Lapham, Tony Osborne at left tackle, John Jewell is at right guard.
- 2:31:04And at the tailback position for Herschel Walker, Rod Pegues.
- 2:31:08Well, we were kidding about Jerry Goldstein before and Goldstein now has a nice bag on his left hand.
- 2:31:15Steve Pizarkowitz, we were kidding about even more earlier before, has his helmet on.
- 2:31:20And we may see, I think for the first time in the 3 years we've been broadcasting together, Dave and Bob,
- 2:31:25a third string quarterback actually come in and play.
- 2:31:29Here's Rod Pegues at the handoff.
- 2:31:30They've given Herschel the rest of the evening off, Pegues out over the 25 to about the 29 yard line,
- 2:31:35a pick up of 7, he needed 3 for the first downs.
- 2:31:38The Generals record their 16th first down of the evening.
- 2:31:41Well, whatever happened, Charlie, to the time when you used to take the players out one by one
- 2:31:46and let the crowd cheer and all that, you know, now they just take him out on the sideline,
- 2:31:49nobody knows he's missing it.
- 2:31:50Well, most of the crowd's also headed for the parking lot by now too.
- 2:31:54Rod Pegues.
- 2:31:56Herschel retires for the evening, 22 carries, 159 yards.
- 2:32:00That gives him 1,100 and...
- 2:32:05Think, think, think, quick, quick.
- 2:32:07This is pressure, 65.
- 2:32:09Thank you.
- 2:32:10Clock running, 3.55 to go on the game.
- 2:32:12Carthin with the handoff.
- 2:32:13Carthin goes nowhere and is brought down after maybe gaining 2 on the play.
- 2:32:18It'll be 2nd and 8. Bernard West again in on the tackle.
- 2:32:22Well, Donald and all of the owners certainly have put on a very united front, Dave and Bob.
- 2:32:27They've come out of this Armageddon-type meeting that was certainly this morning
- 2:32:32into one that was certainly a unifying factor by the end of the day.
- 2:32:35Let me tell you, there's one guy, if there's one guy in this league, you can put it together
- 2:32:39and hold it together, it's Donald Trump.
- 2:32:41You know, we were talking before the game, Donald was explaining the new deal that he made down in Atlantic City.
- 2:32:47Yes, yes.
- 2:32:48He bought yet another casino.
- 2:32:49He bought it from Barron Hill, one of my personal friends, I know.
- 2:32:522nd and 8 from the 30, Generals leading 24-7.
- 2:32:55Pitch out to Pagese running off left tackle.
- 2:32:57Pagese lucky to turn the corner.
- 2:32:59He did, he's brought down at the 31.
- 2:33:01Pagese is a mortal human being.
- 2:33:02We get used to seeing Herschel so often.
- 2:33:05But Pagese is brought down, picked up a couple on the play, 3rd and 6 at the 32.
- 2:33:09So routinely, you know, he purchases a $350 million hotel,
- 2:33:13ba-bum, ba-bum, ba-bum, and then another day he comes in and saves the lead.
- 2:33:17Well, you know, getting back to the comments, you've had a lot of owners on, and of course Don Klosterman.
- 2:33:22But the truth of the matter is, I ran into Peter Hadhazy down here before the game,
- 2:33:26and he was absolutely enthusiastic and ecstatic about the way Harry Usher conducted these meetings.
- 2:33:32That's what I heard.
- 2:33:33So I think we've come away, they've come away, not only the owners,
- 2:33:35but people who have been in pro football a long time like Pete Hadhazy,
- 2:33:38very impressed with what they accomplished today.
- 2:33:41What the league needed was a leader, and apparently Harry Usher, our half-time guest, has provided that leadership.
- 2:33:46Here's Flutie, doing some dipsy-doodling at the 30, looking for the sideline.
- 2:33:50Oh, there he goes at the 30 yard line.
- 2:33:52He must have run about 45 yards and lost 2 on the play.
- 2:33:55I think he meant 35 seconds at 45 yards.
- 2:33:58I'll see you guys up there.
- 2:33:59But I'll tell you, that's the way to get it going.
- 2:34:01Bob Cassiola, when he begins to make his ascent up to the broadcast booth,
- 2:34:07we know that the game is pretty well in hand, and it has been, frankly, all night long,
- 2:34:12with the Generals leading 24 to 7, 2 minutes 9 seconds to go on the game,
- 2:34:16at Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands, and we'll be back.
- 2:34:21Alfa Romeo says, enough.

- 2:35:21Generals fourth and eight at their own 30-yard line.
- 2:35:24Bartridge gets a pretty putt off that Victor Jackson will field back at his own 27-yard line,
- 2:35:29cutting at the 30 and down he goes at the 33.
- 2:35:32Giants Stadium has emptied out pretty well now.
- 2:35:35We had a crowd of 38,084, and we probably have about 384 left in the park
- 2:35:42as we have arrived at the 2-minute warning.
- 2:35:442 minutes left in the game at Giants Stadium with the Generals leading 24 to 7.
- 2:35:51Don't forget, we've got the Post Game Phone Show coming up immediately following our broadcast
- 2:35:55at area code 212-489-WMCA.
- 2:35:59For those of you listening throughout New England, give us a call at 212-489-WMCA.
- 2:36:06Steve Pizarkowitz, you may remember him playing for the St. Louis Cardinals,
- 2:36:10the taxi quarterback.
- 2:36:12Now the role in the USFL, you've got two quarterbacks who are active for a given game.
- 2:36:17You have then a third string quarterback who can only play if the first two are down and out
- 2:36:22and through for the day.
- 2:36:23Thus, Steve Pizarkowitz is in the lineup.
- 2:36:26Now you may be asking yourself, who is the General's third string quarterback?
- 2:36:30You may be asking yourself who the second string quarterback is.
- 2:36:33Doug Flutie, of course, is the starter and has seen virtually every play this year.
- 2:36:38Ron Rees is the General's second string quarterback.
- 2:36:41Only if Flutie and Rees went down would we ever see a gentleman by the name of Fred Hessen.
- 2:36:47Fred Hessen is a six-foot quarterback who played at the taxi squad,
- 2:36:51developmental squad, if you will, in the USFL the first two seasons with the Philadelphia Stars.
- 2:36:55He even possesses a championship ring, although he has never seen a play in the USFL in his first two years.
- 2:37:01Fred Hessen is the General's developmental quarterback.
- 2:37:04Does he have a night job?
- 2:37:06How much money does he make for the third string quarterback?
- 2:37:10He must have a night job if he can go in.
- 2:37:13First and 10 is terrible.
- 2:37:15First and 10 is a 33, minute 58 left in the game, and Pizarkowitz is throwing for the first time.
- 2:37:20Throwing a long side line for Wilford Morgan, playing on the play with the interference against Terry Daniels.
- 2:37:27Ron Rees is now quarterbacking for the General's.
- 2:37:30Mr. Flutie has taken a powder for the rest of the evening.
- 2:37:33Minute 43 left in the game.
- 2:37:35Hand off to Moe Carthon, who will get to the line of scrimmage and on a second effort, make it to the line of scrimmage.
- 2:37:41Orlando picked up a two, second and eight as the clock continues to run with a minute and a half.
- 2:37:46I'm sure there's some people from whom this movement is known that might see Moe Carthon take a rest, wouldn't you think?
- 2:37:52The General's tonight with four interceptions.
- 2:37:58That ties a record.
- 2:38:00For most interceptions in one game by the General's, they did that against Los Angeles two years ago here at Giants Stadium.
- 2:38:07And so the General's unbeaten string this year at home continues.
- 2:38:11Less than a minute to go now, second and eight at the 48.
- 2:38:15Rees, uh-oh, broken play.
- 2:38:17Rees we have just learned is not Doug Flutie, but he's still on his feet.
- 2:38:21There goes Rees. Rees is still on his feet inside the 35 to the 33 yard line.
- 2:38:28There goes Rees to one knee and that will do it.
- 2:38:31We have come to the end.
- 2:38:34First of all for the Orlando Renegades, happily to the New Jersey General's.
- 2:38:38The General's improved their record to seven and three and are now in a three-way tie for first place.
- 2:38:45You're listening to New Jersey General's football on WMCA New York, brought to you in part by the Alpha Romeo President's Group, automobiles built for the fun-loving rich and you, if you hurry.
- 2:38:55Orlando Renegades, the Renegades record drops to two up and eight down while the General's improved their record to six and three.
- 2:39:04It was a dominating victory for the General's really on both sides of the football.
- 2:39:09It really was a dominating victory for the General's on both sides of the football, especially in the running department.
- 2:39:14Thirty-six yards total rushing by the Renegades, good defense for the General's.
- 2:39:18Two hundred and ninety-one yards for the General's rushing attack here this evening.
- 2:39:22An outstanding job by that running game and Flutie of course ran the football very well, but he threw the ball six, seven out of sixteen times for 109 yards.
- 2:39:30He had the one eye on T which takes a little bit of weight for it, but the mix and match between the running game and the passing game for the General's has worked another time here this evening.
- 2:39:38I guarantee you we will see on the highlight film next year the touchdown pass from Doug Flutie to Sam Bowers.
- 2:39:44Two one two four eight nine WMCA is the number for the postgame phone show and we'll start that up in just a couple of minutes.
- 2:39:50Final score here once again, General's 24, Orlando seven.
- 2:39:54We're at Giant Stadium in the Meadowlands and you're listening to the New Jersey General's Football Network.
