- 0:16Speaker 1: 13.11 Dear God, today I declare that a new day
- 0:23Speaker 1: is upon me. Today I declare that living a victorious
- 0:27Speaker 1: life is my new norm. and not my exception. As
- 0:32Speaker 1: the victory over my circumstances increases, I will not act
- 0:36Speaker 1: as Saul in 1 Samuel 13 and allow my ambition
- 0:40Speaker 1: and anxieties cause me to move and act on things
- 0:44Speaker 1: that you've commanded me to wait on. Holy Spirit, quicken
- 0:49Speaker 1: my courage so that I will not let the appearance
- 0:52Speaker 1: of troubles cause me to step outside my character and
- 0:56Speaker 1: God-given peace. I will wait patiently for you and your
- 1:01Speaker 1: instructions as it pertains to the plans for my future.
- 1:06Speaker 1: I denounce negative prideful behaviors and arrogance from my mind.
- 1:10Speaker 1: I declare that I am calm, centered, and clear-headed in
- 1:15Speaker 1: the face of trials. For I know that you are
- 1:19Speaker 1: always with me. I thank you that my resolve has
- 1:23Speaker 1: been strengthened and that my reliance is on my obedience.
- 1:29Speaker 1: which pleases you more than my sacrifices. In Jesus' name, amen.

- 1:57Speaker 2: Saul and Samuel. In our last story, we witnessed Saul's
- 2:02Speaker 2: rise as king. He led the Israelites into victory over
- 2:06Speaker 2: the Ammonites, and all the people rejoiced over their new leader. However,
- 2:11Speaker 2: a flickering light of pride dwelt within Saul's heart. In
- 2:16Speaker 2: this story, we learn how Samuel sees right through Saul's
- 2:19Speaker 2: strong and noble appearance and confronts him. Inspired by the
- 2:24Speaker 2: book of.
- 2:25Speaker 3: 1 Samuel, Hello, this is Jack Graham with today's episode
- 2:30Speaker 3: of the Bible in a Year podcast. Yesterday we heard
- 2:34Speaker 3: about King Saul's first battle as the leader of God's people.
- 2:38Speaker 3: His heart was focused on God and his army soundly
- 2:40Speaker 3: defeated the Ammonites. Saul gave glory to God in that moment,
- 2:44Speaker 3: recognizing the Lord for delivering Israel from her enemy. But
- 2:48Speaker 3: even in that moment, pride began to creep in. And
- 2:52Speaker 3: in today's scripture, we'll see that God's prophet Samuel isn't
- 2:55Speaker 3: fooled by Saul's outward displays of humility. The great prophet
- 3:00Speaker 3: recognizes the pride that is seeping into the king's heart.
- 3:04Speaker 3: God's man will call out the king, but how will
- 3:07Speaker 3: the young ruler respond? Let's listen now to find out.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Samuel was old and weary. The people's grumbling for a
- 3:16Speaker 2: king was answered, and Samuel retired himself to the outskirts
- 3:21Speaker 2: of Israel. where he dwelled. Samuel watched over Israel silently,
- 3:26Speaker 2: being attentive to the voice of God. Though Saul was king,
- 3:31Speaker 2: Samuel was still priest over Israel. All matters of worship, prayer,
- 3:36Speaker 2: and speaking for God were solely Samuel's responsibility. Saul had
- 3:41Speaker 2: been ruling for two years and had established himself as
- 3:44Speaker 2: a great warrior king. Saul's tact, strength, and image of
- 3:49Speaker 2: humility made him beloved by the people. After a while,
- 3:53Speaker 2: it was time for Saul to mount an offense against
- 3:56Speaker 2: the Philistines. Saul chose 3,000 of his finest warriors and
- 4:01Speaker 2: took 2,000 to the hill country of Bethel. The other
- 4:05Speaker 2: thousand went with his son Jonathan to the land of Benjamin,
- 4:09Speaker 2: where some Philistines had begun attacking. Jonathan was a young man,
- 4:13Speaker 2: strong and also loved by the people. While Saul wore
- 4:17Speaker 2: humility like a costume, Jonathan was truly humble. With his
- 4:21Speaker 2: men behind him, Jonathan stormed the city where the Philistines
- 4:25Speaker 2: held Israelites hostage and struck them down swiftly. All of
- 4:30Speaker 2: the Philistines caught word of their victory and their anger
- 4:33Speaker 2: against Israel grew. That day Saul blew the trumpet of
- 4:38Speaker 2: victory signifying that they had taken back the land of Benjamin.
- 4:42Speaker 2: This riled up the rest of Israel to join Saul
- 4:45Speaker 2: for another battle At Gilgal, Saul was glowing with pride,
- 4:50Speaker 2: and his heart grew addicted to the praise and loyalty
- 4:53Speaker 2: of his people. It did not take long for the
- 4:56Speaker 2: Philistines to retaliate. In the distance, 30,000 chariots and 6,000
- 5:01Speaker 2: horsemen scattered like sand on the seashore. The horizon was
- 5:06Speaker 2: blackened by the soldiers. The Philistine foot soldiers hid in caves, holes,
- 5:11Speaker 2: and rocks nearby in waiting for Israel. It was an
- 5:15Speaker 2: army unlike any of them had ever seen. The vastness
- 5:18Speaker 2: of their people, coupled with the strength of their chariots,
- 5:22Speaker 2: sent chills down the Israelite spines. If Saul wanted to
- 5:26Speaker 2: fight them, he had to cross below the canyons. Slowly,
- 5:30Speaker 2: the men of Israel walked towards Gilgal. Every sound and
- 5:34Speaker 2: movement startled them. They were all waiting for the Philistine
- 5:37Speaker 2: horde to emerge from the darkness to attack. The sound
- 5:41Speaker 2: of armor shaking echoed through the canyons. They finally came
- 5:46Speaker 2: to a place to camp at Gilgal and waited for Samuel.
- 5:50Speaker 2: For Samuel had told them he would come to make
- 5:52Speaker 2: a sacrifice to God before they went into battle. The
- 5:56Speaker 2: people of Israel had finally found a rhythm of obedience
- 5:59Speaker 2: to God. Before every battle, Samuel would lead them in
- 6:03Speaker 2: worship to ask God for favor. This was a pattern
- 6:06Speaker 2: they had not had in years, and God was very
- 6:09Speaker 2: pleased with their obedience. Yet seven days had passed and
- 6:13Speaker 2: Samuel had still not arrived. Saul grew anxious. He wanted bloodshed.
- 6:19Speaker 2: He wanted the battle to be over with. The people
- 6:21Speaker 2: were growing restless and Saul's men began to depart. Saul,
- 6:25Speaker 2: out of fear people would not trust him, spoke, saying,
- 6:29Speaker 2: Just bring the peace offering to me. I will make
- 6:32Speaker 2: the sacrifice to God. Saul hastily and sloppily offered the
- 6:36Speaker 2: sacrifice and led people in worship. Saul worshipped God with
- 6:41Speaker 2: no reverence, love, or intensity. Instead, he saw it as
- 6:44Speaker 2: a chore that needed to be done quickly before they
- 6:47Speaker 2: went into battle. As Saul had finished, behold, Samuel stood
- 6:52Speaker 2: behind him. Saul looked at Samuel's eyes. They shot right
- 6:57Speaker 2: through him. His gaze was piercing and reflected the intensity
- 7:01Speaker 2: of God.
- 7:02Speaker 1: What have you done?
- 7:03Speaker 2: Samuel said to Saul. Saul gave a nervous laugh and said,
- 7:07Speaker 2: The people were growing nervous because you were late, and
- 7:10Speaker 2: the Philistines are ready for battle. Saul continued to smile
- 7:14Speaker 2: and feign ignorance. I had no choice but to begin
- 7:17Speaker 2: the offering. As king, I had to seek favor from God.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Samuel saw right through Saul. He knew Saul only did
- 7:26Speaker 2: it out of compulsion. He rushed the worship of God
- 7:29Speaker 2: to appease his own anxiety. Not only that, but he
- 7:32Speaker 2: was not a priest or chosen by God to speak
- 7:35Speaker 2: for him. You are a fool, Saul, Samuel said. Your
- 7:40Speaker 2: kingdom will be as temporary as your obedience to God.
- 7:44Speaker 2: God has already set his gaze on another king, a
- 7:47Speaker 2: man after his own heart. After saying this, Samuel vanished,
- 7:53Speaker 2: and the people followed Saul into battle.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Our story begins with Samuel, now an aged man. He
- 8:03Speaker 3: is no longer judge over Israel as a new era
- 8:06Speaker 3: has begun and Saul is now king leading the people
- 8:09Speaker 3: of Israel. But Samuel is still God's chosen priest and
- 8:13Speaker 3: his prophet. He is still God's man. While Saul was
- 8:17Speaker 3: in charge of leading the nation and going into battle
- 8:19Speaker 3: as their commander, Samuel was charged with worship and leading
- 8:23Speaker 3: the children of Israel spiritually. In just two years as king,
- 8:27Speaker 3: Saul had gained the people's admiration, respect, and loyalty. They
- 8:31Speaker 3: followed him into battle, and God granted them great victories.
- 8:35Speaker 3: If only Saul had remembered his first battle when he
- 8:38Speaker 3: acknowledged that the victory belonged to the Lord, then his
- 8:42Speaker 3: life would have gone in a different direction. But when
- 8:45Speaker 3: everyone around you tells you how great you are, you
- 8:48Speaker 3: begin to believe it. And Saul was hearing a lot
- 8:51Speaker 3: about how great he was from the people. Saul called
- 8:54Speaker 3: up an army to do battle with the Philistines. The
- 8:57Speaker 3: enemy was split into two camps. Saul's son Jonathan defeated
- 9:01Speaker 3: the first of the enemy's units, and the people celebrated
- 9:04Speaker 3: the victory, praising Saul for the win. But there were
- 9:08Speaker 3: other Philistines mounting an attack in Gilgal. This was a
- 9:12Speaker 3: much larger army, and the people of Israel were fearful.
- 9:15Speaker 3: So Saul called on Samuel to offer sacrifices to God
- 9:19Speaker 3: before the battle. It was an act of worship that
- 9:21Speaker 3: pleased God. All was going well until Samuel delayed his arriving.
- 9:27Speaker 3: The frightened Israelites began to disperse and Saul felt his
- 9:30Speaker 3: control slipping. He must have thought to himself, I can
- 9:34Speaker 3: do this on my own. I don't need Samuel. I
- 9:36Speaker 3: don't need God. But he did. He needed God and
- 9:41Speaker 3: God's men. This was a sacred position and it was
- 9:44Speaker 3: Samuel's responsibility and calling. Saul was now impulsive and too
- 9:49Speaker 3: sure of himself. so he offered the sacrifices himself on
- 9:53Speaker 3: his own. This was disobedience. And just like when a
- 9:58Speaker 3: child has acted impatiently, and disobeyed a parent, Samuel shows
- 10:02Speaker 3: up just in time to catch Saul in the act.
- 10:05Speaker 3: When Samuel confronts Saul, he hears no contrition or apologies
- 10:09Speaker 3: and sees no repentance. Saul only had excuses. He tried
- 10:13Speaker 3: to rationalize his way out of it. But Samuel, and
- 10:16Speaker 3: of course God, saw right through the facade. And the
- 10:20Speaker 3: cost of his pride and arrogance was impulsively high. Samuel
- 10:24Speaker 3: speaks to Saul in 1 Samuel 13, 14 and says this,
- 10:29Speaker 3: But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has
- 10:32Speaker 3: sought out a man after his own heart, and the
- 10:35Speaker 3: Lord has commanded him to be prince over his people
- 10:37Speaker 3: because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.
- 10:41Speaker 3: Saul forfeits his right to be king because he disobeyed God.
- 10:46Speaker 3: After Samuel confronts Saul, He then went away, leaving Saul
- 10:50Speaker 3: to go into battle. But Saul's story isn't over. So
- 10:54Speaker 3: much needs to happen before the new king comes on
- 10:56Speaker 3: the scene. And we'll hear more of Saul's story next time. God,
- 11:02Speaker 3: may we obey you and not partially, but completely. May
- 11:05Speaker 3: we humbly and obediently do what you tell us to
- 11:08Speaker 3: do always. Help us not to seek the praise of men,
- 11:12Speaker 3: but only you. May we be men and women after
- 11:15Speaker 3: your heart. And we pray this in the name of
- 11:18Speaker 3: your son, Jesus.
- 11:20Speaker 2: Amen.
