Transcript
- 0:03All righty. Good afternoon.
- 0:05Welcome to Miller and Condon. As we start our week here on the
- 0:08Iowa Sports Radio Network. It's Trent Condon and Ken Miller
- 0:12for the next couple of hours to talk sports with you.
- 0:14And thanks for starting your afternoon with us.
- 0:17Here's what's coming up on our program.
- 0:18We will speak with Scott Document from the Athletic.
- 0:21Been a couple of weeks, a lot of catching up to do with Doc.
- 0:24There is some news, some Iowa news that we'll get into with
- 0:27Scott and probably do so before that, that when it comes to
- 0:31women's basketball is Emily Rodriguez, who was a much sought
- 0:35after transfer with three years of eligibility left.
- 0:38She is going to be a Hawkeye after she transferred from
- 0:41Central Florida, had multiple options and she's committed to
- 0:44the Hawks. So we'll get that with DACA.
- 0:46I do want to go back to his piece on Iowa State.
- 0:48I thought it was a phenomenal right to read rather from a
- 0:50couple of weeks ago. So Scott Dockerman on college
- 0:54football on Iowa, now a little Iowa State that he'll join us at
- 0:58the bottom of the hour. Then Matt Snyder kicks off our
- 1:01number 2, his normal spot, talking Major League Baseball, 1
- 1:05of the more unlikely things of the week.
- 1:07The Angels sweep the Dodgers, unbelievable sports.
- 1:11We'll get into a baseball topics with our friend Matt Snyder.
- 1:14And then Matt Rudy will join us to recap the PGA Snooze fest
- 1:19from over the weekend. Alec Bussey normally joins us on
- 1:22Monday. He will be our first guest
- 1:24tomorrow at 12:30. But Matt, Rudy and Trent and I
- 1:29will talk a little PGA and maybe some of the stuff not taking
- 1:34place on the on the course itself.
- 1:37Rory McIlroy deciding to turn his back on his look, you're one
- 1:42of the faces of the sport and I understand you want to talk
- 1:45Thursday or maybe Friday. You got to say something and he
- 1:48didn't after coming out, oh, within the last year and saying
- 1:52that that it should be mandated. It's not.
- 1:55He mean he doesn't have to, but you're Rory McIlroy.
- 1:58You're the Masters champion. He needed to be heard from.
- 2:01I thought that was a bad look of from a guy that seemingly, you
- 2:06know, didn't make a lot of hasn't made a lot of missteps.
- 2:08My opinion. This was one of them.
- 2:10So pretty good sports weekend. We're down to conference finals
- 2:13in both basketball and hockey. First time in over a month.
- 2:16It's got to be right that we won't have either tonight.
- 2:19Yeah. I gotta be that's.
- 2:21Crazy it is, but you're exactly right.
- 2:24So baseball. Yep, I'm all for it mapping out
- 2:27my schedule. Yes, I'm going to watch tonight.
- 2:30Get into that. Do you want to talk about the
- 2:32WNBA from over the weekend? Can't wait to see the number
- 2:35that comes out, the ratings. It wasn't much of A game.
- 2:37It was a 35 point blowout as Indiana, boy, they look good.
- 2:42They just put it to Chicago in the sky.
- 2:44And of course, everybody's talking about the, which
- 2:46shouldn't have been a flagrant foul in the officiating.
- 2:48And the WNBA picked up right where it left off last year,
- 2:51which was in the crapper. My good God a they missed the
- 2:55Angel push in the back. Yes, absolutely.
- 2:58That that caused Caitlin. What the hell are you looking
- 3:00at? And then she realizes that Angel
- 3:04Reese is about to miss a lay up and then get a rebound and miss
- 3:06it again and then finally make a score because that's how she
- 3:09does gets all her stats. It was a hard foul.
- 3:13It was a basketball play. Hard foul, that's part of the
- 3:16game. You know, it's too bad that you,
- 3:18that one of Caitlin's teammates got between them because I would
- 3:21have liked to see where it escalated because Angel Reese
- 3:23was not going to stop. And that would have been awful
- 3:26for her, awful for the league. In a way, I'm glad.
- 3:29In a way, let's just cut through all the BS.
- 3:32You don't like the woman and that's fine.
- 3:34But don't you know, pee on my shoes and tell me it's raining,
- 3:38right? But the game itself, this
- 3:41Indiana team, if Evers team is really good.
- 3:43You know, you brought me to one of the things that I had on my
- 3:46list about that is if Leah Boston didn't get her arm in
- 3:49there, that would have been awful for both Caitlin and
- 3:56obviously Reese. Right, because Caitlin wouldn't
- 3:58have seen it coming. Because Reese was behind, not
- 4:00just physically. There's our it's a cesspool, you
- 4:03know, and I, I've, I've heard this a lot recently.
- 4:05You know, you're not on X much anymore.
- 4:08I'm not, I'm not because it's awful.
- 4:11I can't stand it. I really can't.
- 4:13It's the negativity. And I maybe jump on twice a day
- 4:17anymore. I mean, it used to be from
- 4:19hours. I can't.
- 4:21It's too. It's bad for my mental health.
- 4:24I can't go there, not for the period that I did.
- 4:27But I clicked on one thing that was intriguing.
- 4:30I thought that I'm like, yeah, got my gears.
- 4:33And then the comments below it and the Angel VS Caitlin, the
- 4:38both sides of it, it is hideous. It's not good for me.
- 4:41I don't think it's good for a lot of you out there to get in
- 4:44to what that back and forth is. It is the lowest of the low.
- 4:48It is the lowest common denominator.
- 4:50I can't stand it. And because of that, that's why
- 4:53I'm not an ex of people wondering.
- 4:54That's the reason right there. It's because of that part of it
- 4:57that is just so gross to me that I can't, I, I just can't get
- 5:01back to it one like I want to. I can't quit.
- 5:03It I know you can't. I can't I do try to stay away
- 5:06from I I do the 4U more than are the following rather the more
- 5:10than the 4U the. 4U is. It's wild.
- 5:14It is the Wild West. Anyways, the game itself is what
- 5:17we should be talking about. And a triple double to start the
- 5:20year just. I mean, of course she did.
- 5:23And did Portnoy really have money on it?
- 5:24He did, he bet. And you know, I'm glad you I'm
- 5:27glad you brought that up because there's been a lot of blowback
- 5:30and and look, I'm you and I I think that it may be as much as
- 5:34anything, are as open as an honest as to how much it bothers
- 5:40us when it's seemingly some info that might be out there that
- 5:44might, you know, lead to an unfavorable opinion of betting
- 5:49on sports inside info. Hell, who who calls Outback
- 5:53Campbell And I would say more than you and I nobody right, And
- 5:57it's well within his rules to do that.
- 5:59Doesn't mean it's right. And, and sooner rather than
- 6:02later, I want to believe that it becomes mandated.
- 6:05But it's somebody knows, right? Somebody's got some insight and
- 6:08it drives you an eye nuts. And there was a lot of people
- 6:12that were pushing back on. Portnoy was talking to one of
- 6:16Caitlin's teammates prior to making that bet.
- 6:19OK, it's a triple double. Yeah, if it was.
- 6:23If it's and and it's. Not that she's going for the
- 6:25assist record. Right.
- 6:26Or she's not, or she's going to throw.
- 6:27She's not going to get what her point tone, whatever it was,
- 6:30we'll say it's 20. She was going to make 18, start
- 6:33missing shots. She made a triple double.
- 6:35That's what he bet on. If it was, she realized that, I
- 6:38don't know, the franchise record for points in a opening game was
- 6:4128. She's going to, she's going to
- 6:44get there, You know, something like that.
- 6:46Then a triple double, right? How difficult it is to kit.
- 6:50I I looked it up, there's been 40 something in the history of
- 6:53the league. Jake's been around for how many
- 6:55years did. She have three last year. 2.
- 6:57Two, this was her third of her career.
- 6:59Yeah, that's what it was. Come on.
- 7:01Right. Yes.
- 7:02If it was a particular point or you saw her chasing MM, hmm
- 7:06then. We'd have and you weren't.
- 7:07He wasn't talking to her, he was talking to a teammate.
- 7:10Right. I mean, come on, what are we
- 7:11doing here? I agree.
- 7:12I agree. Anyways, Unbelievable.
- 7:15Can't wait to see the numbers for both the Fever game and the
- 7:19PGA. Because Trent somebody pointed
- 7:22out over the weekend. I wish it could have taken
- 7:24credit for it. I wish it would have come up
- 7:25with it 'cause it was spotted and it was funny.
- 7:27The leaderboard looked like the John Deere Classic at the
- 7:30beginning, before Scheffler started to make his run right.
- 7:34It looked like a bunch of guys who didn't make the plane for
- 7:36the British Open who had to stick around and play in the
- 7:38Quad Cities, and it was spot on. And it even ended that way.
- 7:42In a lot of ways, yes, it's a good thing Dechambeau and John
- 7:46ROM are having a tournament because or at least trying to
- 7:49make it close. And they did prompt, to his
- 7:51credit, did make it close. Missed a couple of putts.
- 7:53But this robot that is Scotty Scheffler.
- 7:57I mean, if there was a higher tour, he'd be on it.
- 7:59Yes, he's one of one. Yes, he absolutely is.
- 8:02And obviously the story that goes along with it, what
- 8:05happened a year ago at the PGA Championship, the arrest, you
- 8:09would have listed all 176 guys or whoever many were entered
- 8:12last year. He'd be 176 on that list.
- 8:15Any. Pro athletes that would yes, you
- 8:17want to go deeper, You want to go buy the 1000 deep.
- 8:20In terms of pro athletes, Scotty Scheffler be at the bottom.
- 8:22And yet there he was. And just what an odd morning
- 8:24that was. Oh, my God, At first your mind
- 8:28goes well, OWI. Yeah.
- 8:30Drinking. Yeah.
- 8:31That would be the place that certainly my mind went right
- 8:34away. That's the only thing.
- 8:35Vehicle arrested. And also the timing.
- 8:39Didn't know at the time what his tea time was.
- 8:41Well, he's out late. And then no sky to get went out
- 8:43like that. But all right, how about that
- 8:45guy? And then it just keeps going.
- 8:48And then he returned to the course and played.
- 8:50Yeah. After warming up in his cell.
- 8:53After getting ready to play the tournament in his cell.
- 8:56So when he doesn't have to do that, he wins a major
- 8:59championship by 5 strokes. And it was not compelling.
- 9:02It really wasn't. It wasn't interesting.
- 9:04No, this I, I don't think it fits in August.
- 9:08I don't. I'm going to die on that hill.
- 9:11I, I think that we've left golf by that month.
- 9:14School is back. A lot of state fairs are taking
- 9:18place. It's football season.
- 9:22I just don't think that that's the right spot on the calendar
- 9:25for it. And I thought up until this year
- 9:27that, you know, it's a pretty good fit.
- 9:28Trent, It was impossible to watch.
- 9:30And to compound things and make things worse, yesterday we were
- 9:34complaining about sports. Pinch yourself, you fool.
- 9:38The game Seven in the West, Terrible.
- 9:42I mean, they were talking about no drama.
- 9:44None. It was. 4341 I missed that part.
- 9:48I think that was the last time it was felt close, but there was
- 9:52that big run by OKC and it just it.
- 9:53Was done. It was done.
- 9:55Jokic by Game 7. Like, OK, one thing I didn't
- 10:00realize until leading up to the game and the reason that I
- 10:04jumped on the Nuggets because yeah, Jokic had that great
- 10:07stretch in Game 5 down the stretch, even though they lost
- 10:09that game. But it felt like OKC had finally
- 10:12figured out how to defend him to not just make it difficult to
- 10:15him to score, but also his passes that lead to assist those
- 10:18kind of things that they were getting there.
- 10:20But then I read what Jamal Murray done in his career in
- 10:23game sevens. He has 230 plus point games and
- 10:26a 40 point plus game in game sevens and I said well.
- 10:30You know what, I wonder if that's because I saw so many
- 10:32people, so many people that that pros that were grabbing the
- 10:36points in this game. It was, it was not a Yokich
- 10:38thing for me. It was Murray and what he'd done
- 10:40in the past in game seven. He wasn't close to that guy.
- 10:43Yesterday, nobody was. Coming off the illness in game
- 10:45six, yeah, Christian Brown might have been there.
- 10:48Maybe. He was the one.
- 10:51What did he finish with? What a disappointing week. 19
- 10:54and. Just disappointing for you.
- 10:57We'll get to that in a moment too, but just overall, this was
- 10:59a weekend that kind of was setting up that this is going to
- 11:02be one of those fun ones, but it was just really I.
- 11:04Think one of the highlights for me, and this is really fringe
- 11:07and I'm sorry, but I want to go there, journalism, This was the
- 11:12most, one of the most incredible races I've ever seen a horse
- 11:15produce. You're going he.
- 11:17Was beaten. You have to fill me in.
- 11:19I did not place a bet. I did not see a second.
- 11:22I didn't even see a highlight. You've not seen the replay of
- 11:24the I have. Seen absolutely nothing of it,
- 11:27so you're going to have to help me out on this.
- 11:28He is absolutely bottled up at the top of the stretch and
- 11:32they're pinning him in and just race riding.
- 11:35You're allowed to do that. And journalism decided to bully
- 11:40his way between horses. He had a, there were, there were
- 11:43two horses side by side. He was right behind them and he
- 11:46was going to a tiny little hole, not big enough to get through.
- 11:50A, the courage that the horse has and B, the courage that the
- 11:53jock has. And I don't know if he closed
- 11:55his eyes or whatever, but just to put him in that spot.
- 11:58And then the jostling began to a point where I thought, Oh my
- 12:01God, one of them's going down. By this time the horse that was
- 12:05leading the race, the 9 horse Gosper, I think's his name, had
- 12:09gotten away. I mean, he was he was opening up
- 12:12because of all of this chaos behind him, journalism finally
- 12:17got through the hole with maybe, I don't know, an eighth of a
- 12:20mile to run, maybe a little bit more furlong is is an eighth of
- 12:23a mile, maybe a maybe 3, about a furlong to run.
- 12:27Had no business catching this horse, no business whatsoever,
- 12:31and somehow reached down with himself and got up right on the
- 12:34wire to win. This was the favorite in the
- 12:36Kentucky Derby. Finished second in the Kentucky
- 12:38Derby. But to see a horse with the
- 12:40heart to do what he did when he was beaten at the top of the
- 12:45stretch hopelessly, had no chance only to find a way to do
- 12:50it. I couldn't tell you.
- 12:50I'm impressed and I've seen a million of them.
- 12:52This was really impressive. Let's take a listen to call
- 12:55from. And this, you know what?
- 12:57I'm glad you said this because we killed Larry Comas after the
- 13:00Rich Strike call, which went down as oh, what a terrific
- 13:03call. It was an awful call.
- 13:05You didn't say Rich Strike's name once in the in the previous
- 13:096 1/2 furlongs. You can't do that.
- 13:12This call made-up for it. I thought it was great
- 13:14journalism. It's getting closer.
- 13:15Now He's behind a wall of worthwhile godsters running the
- 13:26race of his life. And Sandman has entered the
- 13:28scene and he has moved up with a fur outside.
- 13:31Journalism is still running. No, he's back in the second.
- 13:35He might even win it. There's wire.
- 13:38Oh my goodness. Journalism has won the break,
- 13:42the stakes in a performance like you read about.
- 13:46Wow. Truly was.
- 13:48So that is, I'm not joking. That is the first time I saw
- 13:51that. Holy crap that was incredible.
- 13:55It really was. You just told me what was going
- 13:58to happen. I didn't know if you had a puff
- 14:01before he came in today because I'm watching.
- 14:03What Ken just laid out is impossible for it to happen and.
- 14:07Then it just did. It was amazing.
- 14:08Wow, it truly was is I'll watch his career.
- 14:14I mean, the Derby winter passed. I, I, I had no feelings for this
- 14:19horse beforehand. I didn't bet him in the Derby
- 14:21because he was a favorite and I won't, but wow, what a race.
- 14:25So that was maybe the highlight for me the whole weekend.
- 14:27That was incredible journalism. Now going forward, a second
- 14:32place in the Derby, a dominating comeback victory.
- 14:36Much the best. This is going to be the next
- 14:39stud horse. This is going to be the next.
- 14:41Yeah, I think this will. Because he got bloodlines and
- 14:43kind of everything. You know what, I think he's
- 14:45well, I pretty, I'm sure he's pretty well bred to to play to
- 14:47play at that level. But yeah, I'm going to I don't
- 14:50know if he'll come back in three weeks for the Belmont Stakes.
- 14:53If he does, I'll bet against him if because he'll be the faith.
- 14:56And if he would come back and hit the board, I mean, what,
- 14:59what next level does that take? After the Triple Crown, John Q
- 15:03Public or just kind of fades off, right?
- 15:06The Derby is the race that, you know, if you're going to watch
- 15:09one race, here's the Derby. But he'll end up in a Breeders'
- 15:11Cup and who knows where he'll go.
- 15:13But my God, what an effort. I I the reason I I'm just kind
- 15:17of it just is always intriguing to me because so many of these
- 15:21horses you hear the name again and then.
- 15:24They're gone. But if yeah.
- 15:25But if he puts together a resume, does something special
- 15:28at the Belmont and then heads out there to what, California?
- 15:31Well, he'll go to the he'll stay in New York, probably go to the
- 15:33Traverse Stakes. Traverse yeah, but he he puts
- 15:36together something special where he was second because of that
- 15:39terrible start in the and then came back and won the 2nd and
- 15:423rd jewels of the Trimble crown. If this becomes more than just
- 15:46Oh yeah, I remember that name. If there is a little bit more
- 15:49there's it feels like there's that opportunity.
- 15:51Maybe it's just the the high. I just got to watch it those
- 15:53last 30 seconds. If you haven't watched it, even
- 15:57if you don't like the sport, just watch this just to gain
- 16:00appreciation for what this this 4 legged athlete did hockey from
- 16:05over the weekend. The Leafs be down their leg yet
- 16:08again. It's a rite of spring.
- 16:10The Florida Panthers, to me, I don't know, they just look like
- 16:13they're the best team. I think you know what I honestly
- 16:15though I can make a case for all four of the remaining teams, but
- 16:19Florida just looks as though they've elevated their game.
- 16:21I think this year's team is better than the team that won
- 16:24the Stanley Cup last year. They'll get Carolina, who's a
- 16:27really good team in their own right.
- 16:29Meanwhile, the Stars, who knocked off The Jets on Saturday
- 16:31night in what was it just a phenomenal hockey game.
- 16:34It really was. I, I was, I was more gutted by
- 16:40this team than I think any other Jets.
- 16:44This is my favorite Jets team of all time.
- 16:47I really believe that they were for me and Mark Schiffly's
- 16:51father passing away the night me the the the night of the game.
- 16:55When he put that in to make it 1, nothing we were watching at
- 16:58the time and appropriate, right, I was explaining to my wife and
- 17:00why are we watching hockey? Well, it's Ken's jets.
- 17:02OK, then she's OK with it. Then secondly, and I explained
- 17:05that story and just of course he did.
- 17:08He was going to score a goal. So impactful and kind of pulled
- 17:11up. Well, of course I found out
- 17:13that's not going to hold up. Well, you know how you mean.
- 17:15And ironically, he was in the penalty box when the
- 17:17game-winning goal was scored, which is, you know, kind of a,
- 17:21another gut punch. But it was a great series.
- 17:24I was glad Connor Halibuck played well on the road.
- 17:27I really was. And he did.
- 17:28I mean the, the winning goal, he was completely screened.
- 17:31The the first goal of the game was just a, it's just a great
- 17:34hockey play, just a phenomenal shot by a goal scorer bar down,
- 17:38hit the crossbar and went in the back of the net.
- 17:41So neither one of the goals were hit.
- 17:43His fault. Can't say that about the first
- 17:45series. They they go through the
- 17:47playoffs without winning a road game and ultimately met their
- 17:50demise. But it was a fun ride for my
- 17:52squad and I enjoyed each and every one of the 82 Live our
- 17:55regular season and playoff games and now we get stars and oil.
- 17:59So the Stars are a team that I've got to know quite a bit
- 18:01throughout the last couple of years, seeing them in playoff
- 18:03series, often against some of our regional teams and of course
- 18:07against your Jets here. A question that I had about them
- 18:09going forward is they got a behemoth now.
- 18:12And that first line for obviously the Oilers, Jake
- 18:16Gottinger, he's a Minnesota kid. What I I asked this, 'cause I
- 18:22really don't have. Is he a top half of the league
- 18:25goalie? Top 10 goalie?
- 18:26I think he's, I think he's stamped himself as that.
- 18:29So you go back to the Four Nations.
- 18:31He was the unite, He was the US backup goalie, Hellebuck, our
- 18:37goalie, Jess goalie was the number one goalie, Ottinger.
- 18:42So we're going to get to the Olympics when February and the
- 18:46NHL players are playing in the Olympics this year.
- 18:49So this is going to be AI think is it going to be Ottinger?
- 18:53Is it going to be Hollabuck? And if it's based on what we saw
- 18:55this last couple of weeks, but there's no decision, it's Jake
- 18:58Ottinger. He played Ottinger.
- 19:00Playing games in Winnipeg? No.
- 19:02No, Ottinger was incredible, but boy, oh boy, this this Edmonton
- 19:07team, they're they're tough, but some of the stars this is going
- 19:11to be these both of these conference championships.
- 19:13We're going to try and get Joe O'Donnell on tomorrow to help us
- 19:16outbreak them down prior to prior to game one of the east
- 19:19tomorrow. Really, really good.
- 19:22So let's go back to the NBA for just a second.
- 19:24Just your just your thoughts. Do you give T Wolves a chance?
- 19:28They're a big that's a big price.
- 19:30I was surprised. Much bigger than I anticipated.
- 19:33It's something that I think we talked about.
- 19:34It started the beginning of the playoffs.
- 19:36I don't think in general us casual NBA people or people that
- 19:39jump in the spring realize how dominating they were and the T
- 19:43Wolves are going to win. And it's crazy. 4141, first two
- 19:49series, you dominate the Lakers, you dominate A banked up
- 19:53Warriors team and they're going to have to play so much better
- 19:56offensively if they're going to have a prayer.
- 19:59I'll push in this thing and get into game six in the Target
- 20:01Center and then potentially a Game 7 back in OKC because.
- 20:06They're not beating OKC in five. I don't think so.
- 20:08Is that going 555? No, that's not what this is
- 20:11going to be. We're not going to see that.
- 20:13So because of it, it's about lengthening out the series.
- 20:16So impressed. We talked about game seven, what
- 20:19OKC and that's what I'm learning about this team is the depth
- 20:22that they have and what they do defensively.
- 20:27There are so many different ways that they can go in and the
- 20:29other Williams, the the second one that they have, the guy
- 20:32plays 15 minutes a game. It's just the amount of depth
- 20:34that this squad has. They're built different because
- 20:37that's not the T Wolves. They're 7 deep.
- 20:39That's it. That's what they are.
- 20:41This is going to be a deeper team.
- 20:43I think it's going to come down to Mcdaniel's going to have to
- 20:46have a game where he is knocks down 53 pointers.
- 20:49Nas Reed's going to have to win a game where he has 28 points
- 20:52and six three-point. That's what's going to happen in
- 20:54my mind for this to happen. They're going to bottle up and
- 20:57he's going to get frustrated. That's going to be difficult.
- 21:00Julius Randall's not going to be able to do it what he did.
- 21:02Well, he's going to have to Trent.
- 21:03That's kind of how I see it. And I like you say, I don't know
- 21:08if he can. What's the series price over 5
- 21:111/2 games? Over 5 1/2 games, Let's go.
- 21:15The series price right now, if you're rooting for the T Wolves,
- 21:19you you get +3, you get $3. Which is wild.
- 21:23It really is. You have to lay 365 at circa if
- 21:27you're betting OK C. We got exact results here I'm
- 21:30going through all the prop menu yeah series price 3 to one for
- 21:33the T walls, which is wild series result.
- 21:37No, that's exact result. Total games here we go over.
- 21:40So they have just right now listed at circa, they have over
- 21:446 1/2 get into a Game 7 + 250. Do we get to a Game 7?
- 21:51I hope so. That would be wonderful.
- 21:54Well, I I take the T wolves just finishing up in six personally,
- 21:56but. That'd be better, Yeah.
- 21:58I don't know. We'll see where it goes, but
- 22:01we're down to four in the NBA. We're down to four in the NHL.
- 22:06Speaking of those series prices, T Wolves 3 to 1.
- 22:11It's a little tighter than I thought it'd be with the Knicks
- 22:13and the Pacers. Knicks -160 Pacers plus 140.
- 22:18I was hoping to get more in that close to 2 to 1 range you.
- 22:22Thought the Pacers. You thought there'd be that Much
- 22:24appreciation for the Knicks. I did.
- 22:26I was. Maybe I was more hopeful because
- 22:28I knew like the Pacers going into the series.
- 22:30And when did they start Their Wednesday?
- 22:32Yes. Do you think maybe you hold out
- 22:37because we're talking about a public team and you think the
- 22:39money will come in on New York? I would anticipate that's the
- 22:41case. Yeah, that's one that.
- 22:42It might go up a TIF or two. I mean, it's never going to get
- 22:45to what you were hoping, no. I'm not going to get that plus
- 22:47180 I was looking for. Maybe 160?
- 22:50That'd probably be the high. Watermark.
- 22:51I think it would be too. I think it would be too.
- 22:54All right, let's, let's do this. Time to give somebody an
- 22:57opportunity to win $1000. Yes, this contest continues on.
- 23:00Last week. Oh, this is it.
- 23:02I think so. All right, here we go.
- 23:04It's sponsored by Suntan City, location throughout central
- 23:08Iowa. Suntan City sponsors this
- 23:10contest, kxno.com. Right now the keyword is bills.
- 23:14Bills at kxno.com. Your chance to win $1000 at
- 23:18kxno.com. Another opportunity coming up in
- 23:22an hour from now. Suntan City Central Iowa
- 23:26sponsors this bonus Bucks promo. Scott Doctorman joins us next.
- 23:31We'll bounce around a lot of topics with Doc.
- 23:33Some college football stuff. By the way, you're wearing your
- 23:36Clemson Tigers had today. You know, the more I'm because
- 23:39I'm starting to get into brushing up on college football,
- 23:42starting to spend some time on it.
- 23:46I liked him a couple of months ago.
- 23:47Yeah, I'm really starting to like them even more.
- 23:50Well, you're not going to get the price that we got.
- 23:51It's already dropped. I saw it was 15 to one at one of
- 23:54the shops. It's 12.
- 23:55It's circa. It's five.
- 23:56Yes, if Circa's got the worst price on them, well, they've.
- 23:59Been taking some. Absolutely had to have.
- 24:01The Tigers are going to be a pain in the you know what?
- 24:03Well, in the ACC. They're in the right conference.
- 24:06Absolutely. There's no depth there.
- 24:07We saw it a year ago. You can go 11 and 2 and still
- 24:10get in. They're going to be in good
- 24:12shape. I think so too.
- 24:13With it very well, a very real possibility they're going to
- 24:17have one of those buys and as we saw last year, you get the right
- 24:20path, it can open up or. And we'll talk to Doc about
- 24:24this. Maybe those buys are those
- 24:25automatic buys aren't going to be there this this December once
- 24:30we get to the College Football Playoff.
- 24:32Not this year. This year's locked in.
- 24:33I thought it was. I thought it's back on the table
- 24:35if everybody votes for it. I that's not how I read it.
- 24:39I heard that was a. 2020. 26, we got 12 for this year.
- 24:45I know we got 12 but I thought that well maybe I read it wrong
- 24:49then. Well, regardless, Scott Docker.
- 24:51Will figure he'll he'll be the deciding vote.
- 24:52He actually does he. Does we'll talk with a lot of
- 24:55topics with Doc that's coming up next.
- 24:57Miller and Condon again the keyword is bills.
- 24:59It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 25:09Hi welcome back Miller and Condon just passed 12:30 on a
- 25:13Monday. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 25:15Network. Scott Doctorman from the
- 25:17Athletic, he joins. It's been a couple of weeks
- 25:19since we've spoken with docs. We're going to go back to, you
- 25:23know, shed some more light on that Iowa State story that he
- 25:26wrote. Just a phenomenal piece, Doc.
- 25:27I'm anxious to talk to you about that.
- 25:29But I want to start with the with the here and now news that
- 25:34Jan Jensen's program got by all accounts a pretty big commit
- 25:39earlier this morning. Emily Rodriguez with three years
- 25:42of eligibility comes over to Iowa.
- 25:45Doc, for whatever reason, I thought maybe the honeymoon
- 25:48might wear off just a shade that the numbers going to be tough to
- 25:51pack the building again this year as they did last year. 2
- 25:55years for move from #22 But it looks as though maybe that's not
- 25:59going to be the case whatsoever as this roster continues to take
- 26:02shape. And there certainly seems like
- 26:04the interest, at least at this point from where I sit, is not
- 26:07waning. In Iowa women's basketball, I
- 26:11would say that, you know, there seems to be still some major
- 26:15interest and you know, they've got they've got significant
- 26:17turnover as we know. I I think you lose, you know,
- 26:20when you lose somebody to the WNBA and Lucy Olsen and Sydney
- 26:24falter and and a few others. I I think, you know, you've got
- 26:27to expect that there to be growing pains again.
- 26:30And yet, but I think by replenishing their roster the
- 26:33way they have and adding the players at the same time, when
- 26:37you have chitchat right command from Georgia Tech at the point
- 26:41guard position and then you add in Emily Rodriguez, who is a Big
- 26:4512 on the ball. Big 12 freshman team averaged
- 26:47about 12 points a game. I think you're looking at Iowa,
- 26:51you know, maintaining its place as a probable NCAA tournament
- 26:55team. So I, I think they've, they've
- 26:57done a nice job in the, in the portal.
- 27:01You of course don't cover women's basketball in the WNBA,
- 27:05but I know you keep a close eye on it, Doc here and you talk
- 27:08throughout the years. Were you watching Saturday and
- 27:10and the blowback from Angel versus Caitlin once once again?
- 27:14And boy, if if there was an actual punch there, how ugly
- 27:17that would have been for the league.
- 27:19Yeah, that was that was a tough, tough moment.
- 27:23It, it just to me, I think it just shows the, the anti Caitlin
- 27:28Clark, you know, the, the hate almost, I think it's fair to say
- 27:32from Angel Reese, because if anybody else would have done
- 27:35that, she would have walked it off.
- 27:36It wouldn't have only been a common foul.
- 27:38Of course, it's only her reaction that that influenced
- 27:41the, the flagrant. It was not a flagrant foul at
- 27:45all. I don't know what, what they're
- 27:47thinking or, or whatever. And then, you know, I, I'm very
- 27:51interested in seeing what gets discussed or, you know, found
- 27:56out as far as the, you know, what was yelled or or allegedly
- 28:00yelled at the players from the Indiana fans, because we've
- 28:04heard this before and you know it.
- 28:07If it happens, great. It needs to be said exactly what
- 28:11was said to those players. If it didn't then there needs to
- 28:13be repercussions from that too because I think good fan base is
- 28:16getting blindsided with negative attention and and it needs to be
- 28:20proven that they said something. Absolutely, Doc I want to go
- 28:23back. It's been a couple of weeks
- 28:24since it was published at the athletic, but you're long form
- 28:27and you're such a great long form writer.
- 28:29You really are You're you're look inside Iowa State and where
- 28:33it was and what it's come through what it's had to go
- 28:35through and what lies ahead. Doc again, I'm I'm sure it was
- 28:41well received by by Iowa State fans who, you know, just love
- 28:46the fact that when you you guys do publish something over there.
- 28:50But this was a great read and I thought that there was some you
- 28:53know some stuff that maybe following it over the years you
- 28:56tend to forget that you brought back to light.
- 28:59Well done Scott Dachman, good piece.
- 29:01Guessing was well. Received Yeah.
- 29:03Thanks so much. And it was, you know, it was
- 29:06something I worked on for a while and and I really
- 29:08appreciate it all the time that people gave me, you know,
- 29:11brothers bad and Bill was great because he spans the entire, you
- 29:17know, 3 decades of kind of when I focused on this and and of
- 29:20course, Jamie Pollard was fantastic as always. 2 And I
- 29:23think what it speaks to Iowa State is that when you look back
- 29:27at the end of the Big Eight and beginning of the Big 12, there
- 29:30was a scary period for Iowa State because they were in, you
- 29:34know, financial distress and also were kind of given a while.
- 29:37They were given a mandate. They had to boost spending to
- 29:40become Title 9 compliant. So you had to remove a lot of
- 29:44money and spend a lot of money. And and really there were some
- 29:48key focus, key people along the way.
- 29:51Dan McCartney being at the very forefront.
- 29:53But then also, I think Jamie Pollard is the most instrumental
- 29:56athletic figure in in Iowa State history.
- 29:58The way he's been able to to build that and then to look at
- 30:01it today. And and the challenges are still
- 30:03immense. The challenges are still there.
- 30:05They're going to have to deal with those on a consistent
- 30:07basis. But if nothing.
- 30:09Else they're, they're proven that they can compete in the Big
- 30:1312 and they can fill that vacuum that's left behind by Oklahoma
- 30:17and, and Texas and, and, but there's a ton of other schools
- 30:21that feel the same way. So it's going to be an ongoing
- 30:23process, But with the the athletic department in place,
- 30:26the way they have it, with the coaches that they have, Iowa
- 30:29State is going to be a very competitive program for years to
- 30:32come. And that's really just the way
- 30:34they grew it, the way they grew it organically and put
- 30:37themselves in that position to where Iowa State today is, is
- 30:40just lights, you know, night and day from where it was in 1995.
- 30:45Doc, when you look at the challenges going forward for
- 30:47Iowa State and, and most of the Big 12 programs that are there,
- 30:51you're not going to be able to financially compete with the SEC
- 30:54in the Big 10, but you still want to be able to compete
- 30:57obviously in the football field, but in other places as well.
- 31:00How do you do that knowing that the money is going to be
- 31:02different for every Big 12 program out there?
- 31:05I think it's not that dissimilar to how, you know, maybe the
- 31:10second tier financial, second tier of the Big 10 hopes to
- 31:13compete with the upper tier. You know, whether it's a
- 31:15Wisconsin and Iowa, Michigan State, they've never been able
- 31:18to to mount, whether it's history, tradition, resources,
- 31:23you know, whatever to compete on an even playing field with Ohio
- 31:27State and Michigan. It's just never happened.
- 31:29So what they do, they do well. And I think that's the lesson
- 31:31that that, you know, developmental programs, Iowa
- 31:34State being among them, you know, in Oklahoma State, Kansas
- 31:37State and some of the others can can build on that.
- 31:39I mean #1 one, you have an access point to get into the
- 31:42playoff. That is something that they that
- 31:45they need to have. And they do have, I think #2
- 31:48what you look at is can you compete for that, that point?
- 31:52And once you get into it, can you win games in the tournament?
- 31:56And I think that they're capable of doing that against comparable
- 31:59teams. It's just can they win a
- 32:01national title? That's going to be awfully
- 32:02difficult, but it is for a lot of teams.
- 32:04So I think that financially, as long as they can compete in that
- 32:09arena for, for good talent and put themselves in that stage,
- 32:13they're fine. The problem Iowa State faces and
- 32:16is that, you know, where they are, they are located.
- 32:18They've got 6 Big 10 schools either inside their border or on
- 32:22their border, plus an SEC team to the South.
- 32:25And they all have more resources than Iowa State because of their
- 32:27media rights contract. That's going to that's an uphill
- 32:30climb. But Iowa State has done such a
- 32:32remarkable job of, you know, engineering, again, an organic
- 32:36fan base that really came through and has come through for
- 32:39them. I would expect them to continue
- 32:41to compete, you know, above their weight class and, and put
- 32:45up a good fight. And, and basketball is going to
- 32:47be an area where I think the Big 12 could still be a giant.
- 32:50Doc, the College Football Playoff, Any, any will there be?
- 32:55Is there a chance? I guess we'll put it that way
- 32:57because it seemed like at the beginning of the year there was
- 33:00no chance that there was going to be any tweaks to the to the
- 33:03seating once the playoff rolls around here in January.
- 33:06Now, I thought, and apparently I read it wrong, that there is
- 33:10still an opportunity with, with another meeting still to come
- 33:14with the with the powers it be that if they all get in the line
- 33:17and all vote the same way that we could get changes early as
- 33:22this year or is it as early as next year?
- 33:24Do you know? For the seeding, it can happen
- 33:27this year and that there seems to be some momentum to that it
- 33:31would for the, but there won't be any changes as far as you
- 33:34know the number of participants that feel like you know there
- 33:37is. We're on 12.
- 33:39Yeah, we're going to be on 12 this year, but it could be to
- 33:41the seeding. So you're going to get the four
- 33:43number four ranked teams as opposed to the four top
- 33:47champions. I think that's probably
- 33:49something that is going to happen.
- 33:51But then, you know, in 26, that's where there's a lot of
- 33:55discussion. I, I expect 16 to probably end
- 33:58up being the number. You know, there won't.
- 34:01And whether or not that means that there's going to be, you
- 34:04know, the big, Big 10 and SEC will be guaranteed four teams,
- 34:08the Big 12 and ACC 2. And then, you know, and then AG5
- 34:12gets a team and then the rest will be up to at large.
- 34:15I, I think that remains to be determining the final numbers.
- 34:18But overall, you know, this year, yeah, I think there's a
- 34:21strong possibility that it ends up being a seated turbo.
- 34:25So there's been so much talk about Big 10, if they do get
- 34:28those four teams to get the conference championship game,
- 34:31the three seed against the 6A4 versus the five winner of those
- 34:34two games, obviously get a bid then into the College Football
- 34:37Playoff. My question for you, Doc, is
- 34:39outside of seating purposes, what's the incentive in that Big
- 34:4310 championship game? The number one and #2 teams are
- 34:45already going to be in. Yes, there might be an easier
- 34:49path, but we don't know that until the bracket is set.
- 34:51What's going to be the incentive in a 16 team bracket for those
- 34:55conference championship games for the Big 10 and also the SEC?
- 35:00When you look at it, you know, on paper, I guess that's the way
- 35:04we're kind of observing this. It's that you want to, you know,
- 35:07have a higher seed. You know, if you're, you know,
- 35:10let's say you're Penn State versus Ohio State, you know, the
- 35:13winner could be the number one or #2 overall seed and you're
- 35:15playing the 16 or the 15. There's some significant
- 35:18incentive to have that versus being the five and playing the
- 35:2112 or 6 playing the 11. But one thing that we always
- 35:26forget about is that they are competitors.
- 35:29They do not want to lose. They do not want to lose the
- 35:31teams that they consider rivals or teams they may face later on.
- 35:34And when you get to that situation and you can hoist that
- 35:37trophy, that is a major motivator.
- 35:39So whether or not it matters, you know, from a big picture
- 35:44standpoint the way it once did, you know that that remains to be
- 35:47determined. But I tell you what, when when
- 35:48these athletes get on the field and they've been working and
- 35:51sweating and bleeding all these years, they that competitiveness
- 35:56takes over in those games. So and being able to be a Big 10
- 36:00champion is still a big deal. So same thing with all the
- 36:03conferences. So that that's my expectation.
- 36:05What will happen when the music expansions take place?
- 36:08Doc, as I told Trent earlier, started to dive in just a little
- 36:12bit to college football just to kind of refresh memory, you
- 36:15know, you know, with all the sports that come and go and, and
- 36:19it just started, it was looking at the Big 10.
- 36:21And it dawned on me that, you know, what the hell has happened
- 36:23to Wisconsin, right? That this used to be a school
- 36:26that, you know, they're a Pence. Maybe there are nots below,
- 36:29probably Michigan or Ohio State, but you know, they're in the
- 36:33Penn State type of realm. What has happened to Wisconsin?
- 36:39Is this a blip? Yeah, no, it's not a blip.
- 36:42And this is what you have to be careful of if you're a school in
- 36:46that secondary. Well, heck, even the first year,
- 36:48look at how long it took Michigan, you know from when,
- 36:52you know, before Jim Harbaugh took over after Lloyd Carr
- 36:54retired, you know, it was an 8 year period where they were
- 36:56really a lost program. Penn State was lucky it had
- 36:59James Franklin and and Bill O'Brien.
- 37:01Otherwise it could have been same boat.
- 37:02But but when you're in Wisconsin, you you've got to
- 37:06maintain what you do well, you've got to keep your
- 37:09identity. And they took their eyes off the
- 37:11prize when they went to Luke Fickle.
- 37:12And Luke Fickle wanted to to impose, you know, he wanted to
- 37:16make an air raid attack on offense.
- 37:18Well, what you've got to be careful of is not straying too
- 37:22far from your identity, which at Wisconsin they have big people
- 37:25that people blow people off the ball and you run the football.
- 37:29The only thing missing in that for that program back in, you
- 37:32know, I don't know, 16 to 19 ERA sometimes like that was a
- 37:36quality quarterback was a winning quarterback.
- 37:39They had caretakers and that was about it.
- 37:41But what they would have had a, you know, the top, the big all
- 37:46big 10 caliber quarterbacks, they would have been a playoff
- 37:48team and and a four team era. So they strayed way too far from
- 37:52it. And and it's not just offense.
- 37:54I mean, their offensive numbers were, were pathetic, but their
- 37:57defenses were they really have fallen off.
- 38:01And when they one of the hallmarks of them was they, they
- 38:04were so gap sound and you know, they could throw so many
- 38:08different things at you as a, you know, for about 3-4
- 38:11perspective where they were also looking more like a 425 was that
- 38:15they always got to their gap. They were always athletic and
- 38:18and they stopped you every single time and put you in 3rd
- 38:21and long. And then they had guys like TJ
- 38:23Watt who could bust you off the edge.
- 38:26They have strayed in every facet.
- 38:28They are not technically sound. They their defense is a shell of
- 38:33itself. And offensively, I mean, they're
- 38:36in the hundreds in a lot of categories.
- 38:37If it wasn't for, you know, in fact, they averaged five points
- 38:41worse per game than Iowa did last year.
- 38:43People don't think about that, but it's true.
- 38:45So they they've got a lot of work to do.
- 38:48And I think they're going to try to get back to the basics of
- 38:50running the football and and be playing more physically.
- 38:53But I don't know, your three teams pass you by, and it's a
- 38:57lesson for Iowa to me that once Kirk does retire, at some point
- 39:03you stray too far. You could fall really quick and
- 39:06it's hard to get up, especially in this good Big 10 that we've
- 39:08got seen right now. Scott Dockerman.
- 39:10Doc would great stuff my friend. Thank you.
- 39:12We will track you down next week if your schedule allows.
- 39:14Thank you, Scott Dockerman. All right, have a good one you.
- 39:17Do the same Scott Dockerman from The Athletic Come back, finish
- 39:20up our #1 Miller and Condon Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 39:35Hi, Millory Condon, welcome back.
- 39:37Final couple of minutes, first hour of the program.
- 39:42We may be on the cusp of the tush push being banned from the
- 39:46NFL tomorrow. The NFL owners are meeting and
- 39:49apparently, I mean, this is what it's come to.
- 39:51It's it's on the agenda to be voted yay or nay.
- 39:54Will it be allowed to go forward as a play in the NFL starting
- 39:59this year? Do you want a con?
- 40:03I mean, it's a play. It's not a real play, though.
- 40:06I like, I hate it. It's not aesthetically pleasing.
- 40:09No, it's not that you're better. It's just you found a player
- 40:12that does it better than anybody.
- 40:14You had a center who's not retired.
- 40:16And they're still doing it well. And they're still doing it well.
- 40:19But it's not a football play. It's it's a cheat code.
- 40:24It's a tweak. It it's a glitch in the system,
- 40:27Get rid of the glitch. Get rid of the glitch, take it
- 40:30out of the game. Yeah, I guess that that won't
- 40:33bother me either way. If you want a quarterback sneak,
- 40:35you can still quarterback sneak. Yep, Yep.
- 40:37You just get pushed from behind. I'm a OK with that.
- 40:40Yeah. Will that change anything else?
- 40:43Will the offensive lineman still be allowed to push?
- 40:45I hope not, just get it all out. You can't pull.
- 40:48Right. Let's just get go back to what
- 40:49it was supposed to be, even though some Reggie Bush well,
- 40:53and it was actually rule at that time too.
- 40:55It was, yeah. It just wasn't flagged at that
- 40:56time. No, look the other way on that
- 40:58one. Hour 2 is coming up next, we'll
- 41:00talk baseball. The Angels swept the Dodgers
- 41:04this weekend. Unbelievable sports.
- 41:07And then Matt Rudy on the PGA transplation of the day, circus
- 41:11sports sponsors. Hour 2 is next.
- 41:13Nori Condon, Iowa Sports Radio Network.
