- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday, it's the 24th of
- 0:16October, and you have invited me into your day so that we can
- 0:21read a chapter of God's Word together on this a Chapter a Day
- 0:25Bible reading podcast, because as the name suggests, that is
- 0:30what we do here and we will continue reading this story.
- 0:35Let's let's do a little recap where we're up to.
- 0:38All these people have come back to God's city, Jerusalem from
- 0:43exile and it's been in disarray. They have gathered their
- 0:47resources and under staunch opposition from their enemy
- 0:51neighbours around them, they have rebuilt the wall, complete
- 0:55with gates and doors to keep all their enemies out.
- 0:59And now what do they do? They all gather in the city.
- 1:04They open God's law and they read through what it is that God
- 1:09would have his people do in the way that they live for him.
- 1:13And they've gone off and had this seven day festival of
- 1:17shelters. And the final day of the
- 1:19festival has arrived and all the people are gathering together
- 1:24again at the end of this festival.
- 1:26And that is where we pick up to see what it is that they will
- 1:29do. Remembering of course, that they
- 1:31were moved to tears as they heard God's word the first time.
- 1:35So to find out how they'll respond, have God's way.
- 1:38Would people learn their lesson? Oh boy, let's find out as we
- 1:43read together Nehemiah Chapter 9.
- 1:56On October 31st, the people assembled again, and this time
- 2:01they fasted and dressed in burlap and sprinkled dust on
- 2:05their heads. Those of Israelite descent
- 2:08separated themselves from all foreigners as they confessed
- 2:11their own sins and the sins of their ancestors.
- 2:15They remained standing in place for three hours while the book
- 2:19of the Law of the Lord their God was read aloud to them.
- 2:23Then for three more hours they confessed their sins and
- 2:27worshipped the Lord their God. The Levites, Jeshua, Barney,
- 2:33Cadmil, Shabanaya, Banay, Sharabaya, Banay and Canaani
- 2:39stood in the stairway of the Levites and cried out to the
- 2:43Lord their God with loud voices. Then the leaders of the Levites,
- 2:48Jeshua, Cadmil, Barney, Hashabnaya, Sharabaya, Hodaya,
- 2:54Shebanaya and Petanaya called out to the people, Stand up and
- 3:00praise the Lord your God, for he lives from everlasting to
- 3:04everlasting. Then they prayed, May your
- 3:08glorious name be praised, may it be exalted above all blessing
- 3:13and praise. You alone are the Lord.
- 3:17You may the skies and the heavens and all the stars.
- 3:22You made the earth and the seas and everything in them.
- 3:25You preserve them all, and the angels of heaven worship you.
- 3:30You are the Lord God. And chose Abram, and brought him
- 3:35from ER of the Chaldeans, and renamed him Abraham.
- 3:40When he had proved himself faithful, you made a covenant
- 3:43with him to give him and his descendants the land of the
- 3:46Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Jebusites, and
- 3:52Gurgashites. And you have done what you
- 3:55promised, for you are always true to your word.
- 3:59You saw the misery of our ancestors in Egypt, and you
- 4:02heard their cries from beside the Red Sea.
- 4:05You displayed miraculous signs and wonders against Pharaoh, his
- 4:09officials, and all his people, for you knew how arrogantly they
- 4:13were treating our ancestors. You have a glorious reputation
- 4:17that has never been forgotten. You divided the sea for your
- 4:21people so they could walk through on dry land, and then
- 4:25you hurled their enemies into the depths of the sea.
- 4:29They sank like stones beneath the mighty waters.
- 4:33You led our ancestors by a pillar of cloud during the day
- 4:37and a pillar of fire at night so that they could find their way.
- 4:42You came down at Mount Sinai and spoke to them from heaven.
- 4:46You gave them regulations and instructions that were just, and
- 4:50decrees and commands that were good.
- 4:53You instructed them concerning your holy Sabbath, and you
- 4:56commanded them through Moses your servant, to obey all your
- 5:00commands, decrees, and instructions.
- 5:03You gave them bread from heaven when they were hungry, and water
- 5:07from the rock when they were thirsty.
- 5:09You commanded them to go and take possession of the land you
- 5:12had sworn to give them. But our ancestors were proud and
- 5:17stubborn, and they paid no attention to your commands.
- 5:20They refused to obey and did not remember the miracles you had
- 5:24done for them. Instead, they became stubborn
- 5:28and appointed a leader to take them back to their slavery in
- 5:31Egypt. But you are a God of
- 5:34forgiveness, gracious and merciful, slow to become angry
- 5:39and rich in unfailing love. You did not abandon them even
- 5:44when they made an idol shaped like a calf and said, This is
- 5:48your God who brought you out of Egypt.
- 5:51They committed terrible blasphemies, but in your great
- 5:55mercy you did not abandon them to die in the wilderness.
- 5:59The pillar of clouds still LED them forward by day, and the
- 6:02pillar of fire showed them the way through the night.
- 6:06You sent your good spirit to instruct them, and you did not
- 6:10stop giving them manna from heaven or water for their
- 6:12thirst. For 40 years you sustained them
- 6:16in the wilderness, and they lacked nothing.
- 6:19Their clothes did not wear out and their feet did not swell.
- 6:23Then you helped our ancestors conquer kingdoms and nations,
- 6:28and you placed your people in every corner of the land.
- 6:31They took over the land of King Scion of Heshbon and the land of
- 6:36King Ogg of Bashan. You made their descendants as
- 6:40numerous as the stars and the sky and brought them into the
- 6:44land you had promised to their ancestors.
- 6:47They went in and took possession of the land.
- 6:50You subdued whole nations before them.
- 6:53Even the Canaanites who inhabited the land were
- 6:55powerless. Your people could deal with
- 6:58these nations and their kings as they pleased.
- 7:02Our ancestors captured fortified cities and fertile land.
- 7:07They took over houses full of good things, with cisterns
- 7:10already dug and vineyards and olive Groves and fruit trees and
- 7:14abundance. So they ate until they were full
- 7:18and grew fat and enjoyed themselves in all your
- 7:21blessings. But despite all this, they were
- 7:26disobedient and rebelled against you.
- 7:30They turned their backs on your law.
- 7:32They killed your prophets, who warned them to return to you,
- 7:35and they committed terrible blasphemies.
- 7:38So you handed them over to their enemies, who made them suffer.
- 7:42But in their time of trouble they cried to you, and you heard
- 7:46them from heaven. In your great mercy you sent
- 7:50them liberators, who rescued them from their enemies.
- 7:54But as soon as they were at peace, your people again
- 7:57committed evil in your sight, and once more you let their
- 8:01enemies conquer them. Yet whenever your people turned
- 8:05and cried to you again for help, you listened once more from
- 8:08heaven. In your wonderful mercy you
- 8:11rescued them. Many times You warned them to
- 8:15return to your law, but they became proud and obstinate and
- 8:20disobeyed your commands. They did not follow your
- 8:24regulations by which people will find life if only they obey.
- 8:29They stubbornly turned their backs on you and refused to
- 8:32listen. In your love, you were patient
- 8:35with them for many years. You sent your Spirit who warned
- 8:39them through the prophets, but still they wouldn't listen.
- 8:43So once again you allowed the peoples of the land to conquer
- 8:47them. But in your great mercy, you did
- 8:50not destroy them completely or abandoned them forever.
- 8:54What a gracious and merciful God you are.
- 8:57And now our God, the great and mighty and awesome God who keeps
- 9:02his covenant of unfailing love. Do not let all the hardships we
- 9:07have suffered seem insignificant to you.
- 9:11Great trouble has come upon us, and upon our kings and leaders
- 9:15and priests and prophets and ancestors, all of you people,
- 9:19from the days when the kings of Assyria first triumphed over us
- 9:23until now, Every time you punished us, you were being
- 9:28just. We have sinned greatly, and you
- 9:32gave us only what we deserved. Our kings, leaders, priests, and
- 9:37ancestors did not obey your law or listen to the warnings and
- 9:41Your commands and laws. Even while they had their own
- 9:45Kingdom. They did not serve you, though
- 9:48you showered your goodness on them.
- 9:51You gave them large fertile land, but they refused to turn
- 9:55from their wickedness. So now today we are slaves in
- 10:00the land of plenty that you gave our ancestors for their
- 10:03enjoyment. We are slaves here in this good
- 10:07land. The lush produce of this land
- 10:10piles up in the hands of the kings whom you have sent over us
- 10:15because of our sins. They have power over us and our
- 10:19livestock. We serve them at their pleasure,
- 10:23and we are in great misery, The people responded.
- 10:30In view of all this, we are making a solemn promise and
- 10:35putting it in writing. On this sealed document are the
- 10:39names of our leaders and Levites and priests,
- 10:54Our Lord. It's quite something when they
- 10:55lay out the large arc of history in one chapter that we see how
- 11:03patient you have been. Oh, and Lord, while it sounds
- 11:07like Israel was just continually painful and you had to be so
- 11:11patient, boy, look at our lives now.
- 11:14We continue to choose the wrong way, we continue to do the wrong
- 11:18thing, and your patience endures forever.
- 11:24Thank you that it doesn't matter how many times we stray and we
- 11:28make selfish choices. You are faithful to us and you
- 11:34continue to love us. And now, particularly because of
- 11:39what Jesus has done for us, you continues to sanctify us every
- 11:45day. You make us clean once again so
- 11:48that we can come before you. And when you look at us, you see
- 11:52your beloved children washed by the blood of your son.
- 11:57Oh, what an incredible deal we have in Jesus and we are so
- 12:01grateful. And it's in his name that we
- 12:04thank you and we praise you and we pray all these things.
- 12:08Amen.
