- 0:00Speaker 1: At Rawhide Pass in 1860, an isolated relay station on
- 0:04Speaker 1: the jackass male stagecoach route between San Francisco and St.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Louis is seized by escaped outlaw Rafe Zimmerman and his gang,
- 0:13Speaker 1: leaving Tom Owens, Sam Todd, and the others there as captives. Tonight,
- 0:19Speaker 1: Lux Radio Theater presents Rawhide, broadcast on NBC Radio March 22, 1955,
- 0:24Speaker 1: episode 915. Adapted from the 1951 20th century Fox film,
- 0:33Speaker 1: it stars Jeffrey Hunter and Donna Reed, with William Conrad
- 0:37Speaker 1: as Zimmerman, Leonard St. Clair wrote the radio adaptation, and
- 0:42Speaker 1: Irving Cummings produced. The next eastbound stagecoach is due through
- 0:47Speaker 1: the pass. Now, back to the golden age of radio.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Fox presents Hollywood. Hollywood.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Lieber Brothers Company, the makers of The Luck Radio Theater,
- 1:04Speaker 3: starring Donna Reed and Jeffrey Hunter in Rawhide. Ladies and gentlemen,
- 1:09Speaker 3: your producer, Mr. Irving Cummings.
- 1:17Speaker 4: Greetings from Hollywood, ladies and gentlemen. Tonight we present Academy
- 1:21Speaker 4: Award winner Donna Reed and the talented young actor Jeffrey
- 1:25Speaker 4: Hunter in an exciting saga of the Old West, Rawhide.
- 1:29Speaker 2: What if Fox's screen hits?
- 1:32Speaker 4: It tells the story of two strangers who meet at
- 1:34Speaker 4: a lonely stagecoach station and are held as hostages by
- 1:38Speaker 4: an escaped criminal. A hundred years ago, the territory of
- 1:49Speaker 4: New Mexico included much of the area now known as
- 1:53Speaker 4: Arizona and New Mexico. But a hundred years ago, the
- 1:57Speaker 4: hardy traveler thought of the territory as a vast wasteland
- 2:01Speaker 4: separating California from the East. A wasteland of hostile Indians
- 2:06Speaker 4: and ruthless bandits. And of something known to its friends
- 2:10Speaker 4: as the Jackass Mail.
- 2:21Speaker 2: A cloud of dust moving across the arid.
- 2:23Speaker 4: Plateau, upward through mountain passes, downward along icy streams, endlessly
- 2:29Speaker 4: across the desert.
- 2:31Speaker 2: A plunging, pounding, panting thing of mule flesh and wood and.
- 2:35Speaker 4: Iron and human determination. That was the Oberlin Mail. Anne
- 2:41Speaker 4: Francis go to St. Louis in 25 days.
- 2:42Speaker 2: 2,700 miles in 25 days and 25 nights.
- 2:51Speaker 4: The shortest, fastest, back-breakingest ride you could buy for $ 200 gold.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Meals included.
- 3:00Speaker 4: The eating part of it came at the various relay
- 3:03Speaker 4: stations along the route. At Lonely Cabins and Adobe Posts,
- 3:08Speaker 4: where fresh teams were.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Hitched to the stage. Rawhide Pass was one such station.
- 3:14Speaker 2: The End Hey, Tom, that's a thing. I heard it, Sam. Well,
- 3:26Speaker 2: going to wait out there all day? Answer him.
- 3:29Speaker 5: All right.
- 3:30Speaker 2: All right.
- 3:31Speaker 6: Yeah, you satisfied? Everything according to company rules?
- 3:47Speaker 2: Well, it's a good rule, let me tell you. Without
- 3:50Speaker 2: us blowing that bugle, how's the stage gonna know everything's
- 3:52Speaker 2: all right in here?
- 3:53Speaker 7: Maybe there's engines or road agents hiding to ambush them.
- 3:56Speaker 7: I get the point, Sam. I got it six months ago. Well,
- 3:59Speaker 7: you sure don't act like it. You think I'm getting
- 4:02Speaker 7: a kick out of learning you the stage business? Oh,
- 4:06Speaker 7: come on, let's get them mules ready.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Hey, Sam, come. I'll help you here, sir. All right, folks.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Thirty minutes for food and washing up. Hey, Scott, you
- 4:33Speaker 2: haven't got a baby in there.
- 4:35Speaker 5: Know anything else that sounds like this?
- 4:37Speaker 2: I hope not.
- 4:38Speaker 8: I mean.
- 4:40Speaker 2: No, ma'am, I don't. This is Tom Owens, Mrs. Holt.
- 4:43Speaker 2: He does most of the cooking at this station. Maybe
- 4:45Speaker 2: he can help you. I'd be glad to, Mrs. Holt.
- 4:47Speaker 5: Have you got some milk?
- 4:49Speaker 2: Milk?
- 4:50Speaker 5: Of course not. How about some dry oatmeal?
- 4:53Speaker 2: All right, folks. This way. Well, I think so, Mrs. Holt.
- 4:57Speaker 2: All right.
- 4:57Speaker 5: Mix it with some water. Maybe I can get Callie
- 4:59Speaker 5: to drink it.
- 5:00Speaker 2: I'll fix it as soon as we change the team, Mrs. Holt.
- 5:02Speaker 5: Thank you. And if you don't mind... Yes? I'm not Mrs. Holt.
- 5:08Speaker 5: I'm Miss.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Tom? Hey, Tom! Hey, now, listen here, boy.
- 5:15Speaker 9: I can't change those mules by myself. All right, Tom,
- 5:20Speaker 9: put your eyes back in your head. You've seen a
- 5:24Speaker 9: pretty woman before. Or was all them stories about the St.
- 5:27Speaker 9: Louis gals just stories?
- 5:31Speaker 2: Come on, Tom. All right, Sam. All right, let's get
- 5:34Speaker 2: those mules. More coffee, Miss, uh, ma'am?
- 5:47Speaker 5: No, thank you.
- 5:48Speaker 9: I bet you was never fed a meal by a
- 5:50Speaker 9: cook wearing a six-shooter before.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Yeah, ma'am? You call this a meal? Won't do any
- 5:55Speaker 2: good complaining. Tom here is the son of J.C.
- 5:58Speaker 5: Owen.
- 5:59Speaker 2: So everything Tom does has got to be right.
- 6:01Speaker 5: Who's J.C. Owen?
- 6:03Speaker 2: Superintendent of the Eastern Division of the Oberlin League. Well, folks,
- 6:08Speaker 2: we better be getting back to the stage. Hold on,
- 6:10Speaker 2: wait a minute. What's the matter? Listen, I'm going to
- 6:13Speaker 2: get my rifle. What is it?
- 6:16Speaker 5: Huh, Scali? It's all right.
- 6:18Speaker 2: It's all right. Damn, forget the rifle. Who is it?
- 6:21Speaker 10: It's just government troops. Looks like a patrol. Can we
- 6:32Speaker 10: help you, Lieutenant?
- 6:34Speaker 2: Hope so. Where's the driver, this day? Where is he?
- 6:38Speaker 2: You just pulled in from the west? Yeah, power group.
- 6:40Speaker 2: See four men on the road? Nope, nobody. Who are
- 6:43Speaker 2: you looking for, Lieutenant? A fellow named Ray Zimmerman. Zimmerman?
- 6:47Speaker 2: I thought they had him in prison over at Huntsville. Well,
- 6:49Speaker 2: he broke out the day before he was due to
- 6:51Speaker 2: be hanged. He and three others. They held up Johnny
- 6:54Speaker 2: Madden's stage outside of Armistead. Johnny Madden? But, boy, he
- 6:58Speaker 2: drove through here just yesterday. That's right. And today he's dead.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Johnny Madden. The oldest driver on the line next to me.
- 7:08Speaker 2: But why? Why did they do it? Johnny Stage wasn't
- 7:11Speaker 2: carrying a gold shipment. They must have thought it was. Anyway,
- 7:15Speaker 2: my patrol is here to keep you westward as far
- 7:17Speaker 2: as Mama's here. That suits me. All right, everybody, climb in. Oh, uh,
- 7:24Speaker 2: Miss Holt.
- 7:25Speaker 10: Yes?
- 7:26Speaker 2: Sorry, but you and your baby will have to stay here.
- 7:29Speaker 8: Why?
- 7:30Speaker 2: Company rule, ma'am. What rule?
- 7:34Speaker 5: I paid my fare. It took all the money I
- 7:36Speaker 5: could scrape up. Now I'm going through to St. Louis.
- 7:39Speaker 2: On the next stage, maybe, ma'am. You see, the company
- 7:41Speaker 2: rule says that when there's danger of Indians or road agents,
- 7:44Speaker 2: the states can't carry any passengers under the age of 12.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Of course, if you want to leave your baby here
- 7:51Speaker 2: with us... Me, Tally?
- 7:53Speaker 5: Well, I guess not. We're going to get on that stage.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Both of us. Hey, Sam, get the lady's bags off
- 7:59Speaker 2: the stage. All right. No, don't you dare. Miss Hope,
- 8:02Speaker 2: there's no use of you arguing.
- 8:03Speaker 5: Get out of my way.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Miss Hope, please. Get your hands off me. Let me go.
- 8:06Speaker 2: All right, Scott, get that stage going and get out
- 8:09Speaker 2: of here. You win. No, no, no.
- 8:11Speaker 8: Oh.
- 8:20Speaker 5: I hope you're proud of what you've done, Mr.
- 8:22Speaker 6: Owens.
- 8:23Speaker 2: I'm awful sorry, ma'am, but you see, rules are rules.
- 8:26Speaker 2: I think these are all your bags, Mrs. Holt.
- 8:29Speaker 5: Miss Holt, if you please.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Huh? How's that? Never mind, Sam. You look after the mules,
- 8:34Speaker 2: and I'll carry your things inside. Miss Holt. Oh, uh, Sam.
- 8:41Speaker 2: This is you. How about putting your eyes back in
- 8:45Speaker 2: your head?
- 8:48Speaker 5: Mr.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Owens? Yes, ma'am?
- 9:00Speaker 5: Well, I hardly imagined the son of the superintendent of
- 9:03Speaker 5: the division would be washing dishes.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Well, Sam and I take turns. It's all part of
- 9:09Speaker 2: my education. Education? Yes. See, six months working the relay station,
- 9:14Speaker 2: six months riding boot on a stage, and a year
- 9:17Speaker 2: in the division office, and I'm ready for any job
- 9:19Speaker 2: I got.
- 9:20Speaker 5: And you're six months here?
- 9:21Speaker 2: That's up next week. Look, is there something you wanted?
- 9:25Speaker 11: Yes.
- 9:26Speaker 5: Is there someplace around here I can take a bath?
- 9:29Speaker 2: Well, there's a basin and a pitcher of water in
- 9:32Speaker 2: your room.
- 9:32Speaker 5: I said a bath.
- 9:36Speaker 2: All right, come on. See that thing across the yard
- 9:46Speaker 2: that Sam's pumping water into?
- 9:48Speaker 5: The horse drop?
- 9:48Speaker 2: Yeah, now, you just see that you don't use any
- 9:51Speaker 2: soap in it.
- 9:52Speaker 5: Is that where you take a bath?
- 9:54Speaker 2: No, there's a hot spring in the canyon back at
- 9:56Speaker 2: the station.
- 9:57Speaker 5: Ah, that's more like it.
- 9:58Speaker 2: But you're going to have to watch out. for snakes.
- 10:00Speaker 5: Oh, then maybe I'd better borrow your revolver.
- 10:04Speaker 2: What? All right.
- 10:06Speaker 5: And maybe your gun belt, too.
- 10:08Speaker 2: That's not a bad idea. You can't hit them. At
- 10:11Speaker 2: least you can scare them to death.
- 10:13Speaker 5: I can hit them. Don't you worry about that. Hey, John.
- 10:18Speaker 2: I'm coming, Sam. I'm coming. You wanted to let her
- 10:21Speaker 2: take your gun? Oh, she says she knows how to
- 10:24Speaker 2: use it. Uh-huh. Maybe too well. Sam, I don't figure
- 10:29Speaker 2: her for a lady road agent. What do you figure
- 10:31Speaker 2: her for? I don't know. She sure knows what she wants,
- 10:36Speaker 2: you know. Took over my bed, my bedroom, hooked my
- 10:39Speaker 2: gear up, made it a nursery for her and the baby. Hey.
- 10:43Speaker 5: Hmm?
- 10:44Speaker 2: What's that? What's what? I thought I heard something. There,
- 10:49Speaker 2: that's it. Yeah, somebody's coming up the gutter. I see them.
- 10:52Speaker 2: They're just rounding them boulders. Tom, there's that spear, rifle,
- 10:55Speaker 2: and the stable. Get it. Stay out of sight and
- 10:57Speaker 2: cover me. You be careful, Tom. Hello. Morning. You the
- 11:09Speaker 2: station keeper? I'm the helper. How is the boss? Oh,
- 11:16Speaker 2: he's around here. Just the two of you there, huh?
- 11:18Speaker 2: That's right. I guess you wonder who I am. Maybe
- 11:23Speaker 2: this badge will help. Oh, Deputy Sheriff? Yeah, Deputy Sheriff
- 11:27Speaker 2: Miles from Huntsville. Well, I'm glad to know you. Owens
- 11:31Speaker 2: is my name. Howdy. Suppose you could pick me up
- 11:34Speaker 2: with a meal? Sure can. Hey, Sam! Sam, it's all right.
- 11:37Speaker 2: It's the Sheriff. You can come out now. All right.
- 11:39Speaker 2: You're not taking any chances, I see. Well, that's the
- 11:43Speaker 2: way to stay alive in this country. Especially with Rafe
- 11:46Speaker 2: Zimmerman on the loose. Yeah, especially with Zimmerman. Howdy, Sheriff.
- 11:52Speaker 2: Stay with your horse? As soon as I'm off him,
- 11:55Speaker 2: you can't. All right, boys, reach for it. Tom, he
- 12:01Speaker 2: ain't no sheriff. Get your hands up, I said. Higher.
- 12:05Speaker 2: That's it. What's that for?
- 12:09Speaker 12: Yeah, who are you signaling? Some friends of mine down
- 12:11Speaker 12: on the gully. Oh, maybe I better really introduce myself.
- 12:16Speaker 2: My name's Zimmerman. Hey, Zim, you in there? Where are
- 12:29Speaker 2: you being, Zim? Oh, there's him. He got them with
- 12:33Speaker 2: the Hanson there. Right, there's a rifle on the wall.
- 12:35Speaker 2: Use it to cover these fellas. Yes. Have us you
- 12:38Speaker 2: search the other room. See if there's anybody else around.
- 12:40Speaker 2: You bet. Yancey, you put our horses in the corral.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Hide the saddles. Sure. Good idea, boss. And now, Mr.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Owens and Mr. What's-your-name. Same card.
- 12:50Speaker 12: All right, I now want some answers from you two,
- 12:52Speaker 12: and I want them right. What time's the next stage
- 12:55Speaker 12: due here? I said when. Is it one from the east?
- 13:03Speaker 2: Tonight? What time? What time, Dan? The stage from the west.
- 13:09Speaker 2: Tomorrow afternoon. Uh-huh. How much gold does it carry? How much? None.
- 13:17Speaker 2: That shipment went through today. Stop it. He'll get more
- 13:21Speaker 2: than that the next time he lies to me. The
- 13:23Speaker 2: California stage comes through tomorrow morning.
- 13:26Speaker 12: Carrying 100,000 on gold bars, consigned by Crocker Mine and
- 13:29Speaker 12: Company in Sacramento to the government men of New York.
- 13:31Speaker 2: And why, I ask God? Because I'm testing it. And
- 13:35Speaker 2: letting you know I've got everything figured. Hey, Zim, come look. Oh,
- 13:39Speaker 2: what is it? Take a look. Ain't I fetching in
- 13:42Speaker 2: this here bonnet? Grats, keep them covered. Yes, sir. Well, now,
- 13:47Speaker 2: tell me, how could I? That's a fair rifle, that,
- 13:48Speaker 2: in the stable, isn't it? Yeah, I've been thinking about that. Hey, you,
- 13:52Speaker 2: what you whispering about? Well, that's nothing at all. I'm
- 13:55Speaker 2: going to make a break for it. No, not now. Later.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Hold on.
- 13:59Speaker 2: Hold on. Where is she? Where's who? The woman, your wife.
- 14:04Speaker 2: I ain't got no wife. All right, then she's all right.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Where is she?
- 14:09Speaker 12: Where's your wife?
- 14:11Speaker 2: That's a good question. I'm not married. Don't lie to me. Well,
- 14:30Speaker 2: that's what you wanted me to do, wanted him. Now,
- 14:32Speaker 2: how about this other one? No, we need him. Gratz,
- 14:37Speaker 2: take him to the bedroom. Lock him up. Yeah, boy.
- 14:41Speaker 2: You go first. Mr. Owens. All right. Feathers, right after
- 14:51Speaker 2: you fired, did you hear a woman scream? Hey, come
- 14:55Speaker 2: to think of it, I did.
- 14:56Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 14:59Speaker 2: Sam? A baby? Yeah, here they come. Yancey's bringing them in. Say,
- 15:10Speaker 2: look at what I found, boss.
- 15:13Speaker 4: I found this wife out in Sable, and then I
- 15:14Speaker 4: see this lady and this baby cutting across your arms.
- 15:17Speaker 5: You murdered her. I saw you kill Sam.
- 15:19Speaker 2: Good. Then you know what you're up against. All right, Sam,
- 15:23Speaker 2: let's take her back and lock her up with her husband.
- 15:24Speaker 5: My husband?
- 15:25Speaker 2: Why, sure.
- 15:27Speaker 11: Boy, don't you like him since you've seen me?
- 15:32Speaker 2: Come on.
- 15:34Speaker 5: Get your hands off me.
- 15:37Speaker 2: Oh, touchy, ain't you? I like him with sponge. Have it.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Have it. I ain't doing nothing, Jim. All right. Oh,
- 15:49Speaker 2: get him, then. I was hoping you'd get away if
- 15:55Speaker 2: you'd hear those shots back in the canyon.
- 15:57Speaker 5: How long do you think it takes for a bath?
- 15:59Speaker 2: Hey, wait a minute. What happened to my gun and
- 16:01Speaker 2: the cartridge still?
- 16:02Speaker 5: I dropped them.
- 16:03Speaker 2: You dropped them? Yes, I.
- 16:05Speaker 5: Well, I was so startled when I heard those shots.
- 16:07Speaker 5: It's a wonder I didn't drop Callie, too.
- 16:09Speaker 2: Where's the gun now?
- 16:10Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 16:11Speaker 2: I think.
- 16:12Speaker 5: Well, I think just the other side of that pile
- 16:14Speaker 5: of firewood along the corral.
- 16:17Speaker 2: A lot of good it's going to do it out there. Us?
- 16:20Speaker 5: I'm not in this thing with you.
- 16:23Speaker 2: Miss Holt, or Mrs. Holt, or whatever your name is.
- 16:26Speaker 2: It's Miss.
- 16:27Speaker 5: Vinnie Hope. And while we're on the subject, Mr. Owen,
- 16:31Speaker 5: what right have you to tell those men you're my husband?
- 16:34Speaker 9: I didn't tell them. That's Zimmerman's idea. That just might
- 16:38Speaker 9: be the thing that'll save your skin.
- 16:40Speaker 2: Oh?
- 16:41Speaker 5: You're sure it's not your own skin you're worried about?
- 16:44Speaker 2: Well, sure I am.
- 16:46Speaker 11: Killing me doesn't seem to be part of their plan,
- 16:48Speaker 11: at least not yet. See, they need me alive until
- 16:51Speaker 11: that stage comes through with that big gold ship, and
- 16:52Speaker 11: I'm going to be their decoy.
- 16:54Speaker 5: What's that got to do with him thinking I'm your wife? No,
- 16:57Speaker 5: I'm staying out of your mess. I'm going to tell
- 16:59Speaker 5: him the truth.
- 16:59Speaker 2: Now, look.
- 17:00Speaker 9: Can't you understand, Miss Holt, that they'll be nice to
- 17:02Speaker 9: you as long as they think you're important to me?
- 17:05Speaker 5: Until they don't need you any longer. But after they
- 17:08Speaker 5: get the gold shipment....
- 17:11Speaker 2: I'm just hoping we'll figure out something before then.
- 17:16Speaker 5: And if we don't, then what happens?
- 17:20Speaker 2: What do you think?
- 17:23Speaker 5: I think I'd like to live. Even if it's just
- 17:26Speaker 5: for another 24 hours.
- 17:39Speaker 4: It's late afternoon in the lonely station at Rawhide Pass,
- 17:42Speaker 4: where Vinnie and Tom are held prisoners. In the main
- 17:45Speaker 4: room of the station, Zimmerman, Tevis, Yancey, and Dratt wait
- 17:49Speaker 4: impatiently for the arrival of the stagecoach from the east.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Have it. Yeah? Where'd you find the whiskey? Right in
- 18:03Speaker 2: the cupboard. Put it back. Oh, now, dear. Right now. Oh.
- 18:11Speaker 2: There's not going to be any drinking. That goes for you, too, Gretz. Yeah, Yancey.
- 18:15Speaker 2: Did you hear that, Yancey? Well, you know I ain't
- 18:18Speaker 2: no drinking man, Bob. All I ever done wrong in
- 18:21Speaker 2: my whole life was to steal that horse. If it
- 18:24Speaker 2: wasn't for that, you and me would have never met.
- 18:26Speaker 2: I regret it even more than you, mister. Just because
- 18:29Speaker 2: you three busted out of jail along with me, that
- 18:31Speaker 2: doesn't mean I picked you for this job. You just
- 18:33Speaker 2: came along. And that's my bad luck. Now, there's no
- 18:37Speaker 2: call to talk to honor, is there? Everything's going just right.
- 18:40Speaker 2: Is it? Look out there in the yard. There's Todd's
- 18:42Speaker 2: body laying there for the whole world to see. But
- 18:44Speaker 2: have any of you got brains enough to go bury him?
- 18:46Speaker 13: No.
- 18:48Speaker 2: I've got to tell you everything. I'll bury him, museum.
- 18:53Speaker 2: I'll put up a nice little cross over there. Are
- 18:55Speaker 2: you crazy? All we need for the stagecoach to come
- 18:58Speaker 2: along and see a cross. Gratz. You go bury him.
- 19:05Speaker 2: You're so dumb, you couldn't get any longer, it is. Yes, Tim.
- 19:09Speaker 2: I do it good. The rest of you keep a
- 19:11Speaker 2: lookout for that stage from the east. Might come through
- 19:14Speaker 2: here early. What you gonna do, Sam? Never mind. Owens.
- 19:28Speaker 2: I don't remember seeing you wear a revolver. That's right.
- 19:33Speaker 2: Where is it? Your gun? Yes, your gun. It's in Tucson.
- 19:40Speaker 2: I sent it in to be fixed. What was wrong
- 19:43Speaker 2: with it? Broken firing pin? Mm-hmm. Mrs. Owens, I'm going
- 19:49Speaker 2: to have to look through your things.
- 19:51Speaker 5: I'm not stopping you.
- 19:52Speaker 2: Go ahead. Search the whole room if you want to.
- 19:58Speaker 2: If you're lying to me. Go ahead. Look.
- 20:00Speaker 5: If we had a gun, we wouldn't be putting up
- 20:03Speaker 5: with your bullying.
- 20:06Speaker 2: That's the point, ma'am.
- 20:09Speaker 12: Owens. Yeah, when the stage from the east comes through,
- 20:12Speaker 12: I want everything just as usual around here. You feed
- 20:15Speaker 12: the passengers and the crew and get them on.
- 20:17Speaker 2: Their way again with no question. They wanted no worse thing.
- 20:21Speaker 2: You tell them he's gone to Tucson, not a Yuma.
- 20:24Speaker 2: Say he had a bad tooth, he had to go
- 20:26Speaker 2: to a dentist. I guess that'll work. It'll better work.
- 20:40Speaker 5: Company rule.
- 20:42Speaker 2: What are you talking about?
- 20:45Speaker 5: The wonderful company rule that was supposed to keep the
- 20:48Speaker 5: baby and me out of danger.
- 20:50Speaker 2: If you would let us go.
- 20:51Speaker 5: Through on that stage, in another week, Callie would have
- 20:53Speaker 5: been with her father's family, safe.
- 20:56Speaker 2: Now, now, that brings up something I've been meaning to
- 20:58Speaker 2: ask you. Where is her father?
- 21:02Speaker 5: Dead. Killed three months ago. Her mother, too.
- 21:07Speaker 2: Oh, but I thought that she was... I told you.
- 21:09Speaker 5: I'm plain Vinnie Holt. Callie isn't my baby.
- 21:13Speaker 2: Her mother, Jeannie.
- 21:14Speaker 5: Was my sister. She married a gambler who got the
- 21:19Speaker 5: gold fever and just had to go to California.
- 21:22Speaker 2: What took you out there?
- 21:24Speaker 5: Jeannie wouldn't go without me. Now I'm going home without her.
- 21:29Speaker 2: You say she and her husband were killed? How?
- 21:33Speaker 5: Jeannie was too pretty and Johnny was too jealous. One night,
- 21:37Speaker 5: a drunken plane jumper took a fancy to her, and
- 21:39Speaker 5: when the shooting was over, I was alone with Callie.
- 21:47Speaker 2: Well, that explains some things. It does? Yeah. I guess
- 21:51Speaker 2: you've got reason enough not to like men.
- 21:55Speaker 5: I don't? Is that the impression I get?
- 21:58Speaker 2: You sure do.
- 22:02Speaker 5: Tom.
- 22:03Speaker 2: That's a stage.
- 22:04Speaker 5: There must be some way to get word to them.
- 22:06Speaker 2: All right, now, we've got to be careful. Zimmerman will
- 22:07Speaker 2: be watching us like a hawk. Wait a minute. I
- 22:10Speaker 2: want some paper and a pencil out here. It's on
- 22:12Speaker 2: the bureau. Zimmerman and his name are here. He is
- 22:26Speaker 2: Bozeman as Sheriff Miles. Tom, you can't possibly slip that
- 22:37Speaker 2: note to the stage driver.
- 22:39Speaker 5: You just said they'll be watching you every instant.
- 22:41Speaker 2: Then that may give you a chance. Here, hide this
- 22:44Speaker 2: in your blouse. And you be careful. If anything goes wrong,
- 22:47Speaker 2: they'll shoot down everyone.
- 22:49Speaker 5: I know, but don't you think.
- 22:50Speaker 2: Shh, shh, shh. Owen, why isn't that stage coming on in?
- 23:00Speaker 2: They're waiting for me to answer them. All right, then
- 23:02Speaker 2: do it. Come on out here. Yancey. Yeah, boss? Go
- 23:08Speaker 2: on back there and stay with the baby. Lock yourself
- 23:09Speaker 2: in that room and keep her quiet. Sure I will.
- 23:11Speaker 2: I just love babies. What about my wife? I was
- 23:16Speaker 2: coming to her. Tevis. Yes, Em? Take Mrs. Owens out
- 23:19Speaker 2: the back way. Take her up in that canyon behind
- 23:21Speaker 2: the station. Far enough so she can't yell. You bet.
- 23:26Speaker 2: This is the kind of work I enjoy. Zimmerman, you
- 23:28Speaker 2: can't do that. Not with Tevis. Why not? You know
- 23:30Speaker 2: why as well.
- 23:31Speaker 5: As I do.
- 23:31Speaker 2: Just look at her. She'll be all right. As long
- 23:33Speaker 2: as you don't make any mistakes. Now, where's your buble?
- 23:37Speaker 2: Hanging over there. All right, go get it.
- 23:40Speaker 12: Sim, you told everybody what to do except me. You're
- 23:44Speaker 12: going to be out in the stable with your rifle, Grats.
- 23:45Speaker 12: You cover Owens and me when we meet the stage.
- 23:48Speaker 2: Yeah, good.
- 23:50Speaker 12: Owens and his old friend, Deputy Sheriff Miles. Owens, I
- 24:00Speaker 12: said answer him.
- 24:05Speaker 5: Hey, Tom!
- 24:21Speaker 2: Tom! You want something, David? Yes. What happened to your cooking?
- 24:27Speaker 2: Everything's cold and there's not much of it. Didn't have
- 24:30Speaker 2: time to fix it, that's all. Well, why not? I've
- 24:32Speaker 2: been too busy. Oh, busy doing what?
- 24:35Speaker 12: All right, Tom, I thought you'd told him.
- 24:37Speaker 2: You know, about Sam. Sam? Yeah, about his toothache and
- 24:43Speaker 2: having to go to the dentist in Tucson. Yeah, he
- 24:45Speaker 2: told his chef.
- 24:47Speaker 9: And you're staying on here to help out?
- 24:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I.
- 24:51Speaker 2: I asked him to. Uh, Mr. Pickard, what are you
- 24:56Speaker 2: bound for? All just family, Sheriff. Uh-huh. What about you, Mr. Chickering?
- 25:01Speaker 2: I'm going to California. Say, you know something, Sheriff? There's
- 25:04Speaker 2: something about you that... There is? Yeah, I keep thinking now.
- 25:10Speaker 2: Ain't I seen you somewhere before? Oh, maybe. You ever
- 25:16Speaker 2: been to Huntsville? Nope. I never want to read it.
- 25:18Speaker 2: That's where the territorial prison is located, isn't it? The
- 25:21Speaker 2: one that fellow Zimmerman broke out of? Yeah, that's the one, Mr. Pickett.
- 25:25Speaker 2: I suppose, Sheriff, you must have known Zimmerman. Well, I, uh...
- 25:29Speaker 2: I saw him once or twice. Mr. Pickett's from the
- 25:32Speaker 2: New York Herald, Sheriff. He's probably looking for a story. Ah,
- 25:35Speaker 2: a newspaper man, eh? You hear that, Tom? Maybe you
- 25:41Speaker 2: could give Mr. Pickett a story, eh? Oh, would you, Mr. Owens?
- 25:44Speaker 2: Maybe something with flavor and excitement? I'm sorry, Mr. Pickett.
- 25:48Speaker 2: Nothing much happens around here. Sheriff, about this fellow Zimmerman. Yeah?
- 25:52Speaker 2: I understand he came from a pretty high-told family. That's right,
- 25:58Speaker 2: he did.
- 26:00Speaker 11: If you met him, you'd probably take him for a
- 26:02Speaker 11: complete gentleman.
- 26:03Speaker 2: You can call a murderer a gentleman. Well, I heard
- 26:06Speaker 2: he went wrong and caught some woman, a trio from
- 26:08Speaker 2: New Orleans. Yeah, they say she was a real looker.
- 26:11Speaker 11: Someone caught her double-dealing him with some other young, fancy dance.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Still involved. You seem to know quite a bit about Zimmerman, Mr. Figgins. Oh,
- 26:19Speaker 2: forget it. I'm a newspaper man. Well, why don't you
- 26:22Speaker 2: tell us the rest of the story? I don't see
- 26:25Speaker 2: what you can add to that story except for to
- 26:26Speaker 2: catch him again and hang him. Uh, Mr. Chickering, what's
- 26:31Speaker 2: your line of business? I'm a drummer, Colt Firearms, Hartford, Connecticut. Now,
- 26:35Speaker 2: is that so? I hear Colt's getting out some new
- 26:37Speaker 2: army models. That's what I'm taking to California, I'll assure you. Uh, no, no, no, no,
- 26:42Speaker 2: that's all right. No trouble. Got my sample case right here. There.
- 26:48Speaker 2: You ever see such beauties? You mind if I handle one, Mr. Chickering? Tom,
- 26:53Speaker 2: go right ahead. We're proud of our product. Thank you.
- 26:59Speaker 2: Nice balance. If you want to test it, I've got
- 27:01Speaker 2: ammunition out the sea. You're an excellent salesman, Mr. Chickering.
- 27:09Speaker 2: But I don't think there's time for that. What was that?
- 27:12Speaker 2: It was just a coyote. Like it came from the canyon. Well,
- 27:15Speaker 2: it might have. Tom, may I see the gun, please? Tom?
- 27:20Speaker 2: It came from the canyon. It's only a coyote. The gun, Tom?
- 27:27Speaker 2: Thank you. It's a spooky kind of noise, ain't it, girl?
- 27:41Speaker 12: Yes.
- 27:42Speaker 2: Is that why you're shivering?
- 27:45Speaker 5: It's cold.
- 27:46Speaker 8: The stage will be pulling out almost any time. There's
- 27:49Speaker 8: plenty of moonlight so we can see it.
- 27:55Speaker 11: Do you know what that coyote is howling about?
- 28:00Speaker 8: He just called for his lady friend. Come and be
- 28:04Speaker 8: sweet to him. Even old coyotes got pretty friends.
- 28:12Speaker 2: Mr.
- 28:12Speaker 5: Tevis, please.
- 28:12Speaker 2: Oh, Mr. Tevis. You don't have to be so nice
- 28:17Speaker 2: and nice, girl. Don't run away. I ain't gonna hurt
- 28:20Speaker 2: you now.
- 28:20Speaker 5: I'll tell Zimmerman. I'll let him know. Just tell you that.
- 28:22Speaker 2: You think I'm afraid of him, huh? Just because he
- 28:25Speaker 2: thinks he runs things?
- 28:26Speaker 12: Mr.
- 28:26Speaker 2: Tevis. Mr. Tevis. Mr. Tevis. Well, girl, you know how
- 28:32Speaker 2: long it's been since I seen a pretty face? Two years.
- 28:39Speaker 2: Too long yet. Hey, wait a minute, girlie. I told
- 28:43Speaker 2: you I'm not going to hurt you, no? Hey. What's
- 28:47Speaker 2: that you dropped?
- 28:48Speaker 8: What?
- 28:49Speaker 2: You dropped that piece of paper.
- 28:50Speaker 5: No, I.
- 28:51Speaker 2: Yes, you did. I seen that fall out of your blouse.
- 28:53Speaker 5: My blouse?
- 28:54Speaker 2: Well, there it is, right there at your feet. Oh, Mr.
- 28:57Speaker 5: Taylor.
- 28:58Speaker 2: Now, pick it up. Go on. But... Now, give it
- 29:01Speaker 2: to me.
- 29:02Speaker 5: It's only a letter, a personal letter.
- 29:05Speaker 2: Who from?
- 29:07Speaker 5: My brother's.
- 29:10Speaker 2: Let me see if it is.
- 29:12Speaker 5: You can't read it. There's no light.
- 29:14Speaker 2: There's moonlight. That's good enough. Now hand it over. All right.
- 29:28Speaker 2: I guess you can have it back.
- 29:30Speaker 5: What?
- 29:31Speaker 2: Your letter.
- 29:33Speaker 11: You thought I didn't know how to read, didn't you? Well,
- 29:35Speaker 11: I guess I showed you, didn't I? I?
- 29:41Speaker 2: Yes, Mr.
- 29:42Speaker 5: Patterson.
- 29:43Speaker 2: I guess you did. You did indeed. Everybody aboard? So long, Davis.
- 29:56Speaker 2: So long, Sam. Good ship. So long, gentlemen. All right, Owens,
- 30:09Speaker 2: back indoors. My wife is over there. Travis is bringing
- 30:11Speaker 2: her in. Come on. Now, just a minute. Yes? Shut
- 30:23Speaker 2: the front door. Now, come here. Something wrong? Yeah. Plenty.
- 30:41Speaker 2: That's for trying to get that salesman's gun.
- 30:44Speaker 12: And that's for not following my orders.
- 30:47Speaker 2: And that's so you'll remember next time. What's the matter?
- 30:52Speaker 2: You're waking the baby. How do you think she can
- 30:54Speaker 2: sleep with all this rag? Oh, get out of here, Yancey. Jim.
- 30:57Speaker 2: Go on back to the room. All right, boss. All right,
- 31:00Speaker 2: now I'm going to have to rock her to sleep again.
- 31:02Speaker 2: Are you... You're through with me, Zimmerman. No. That's Vinnie.
- 31:10Speaker 2: Don't move. I want to stay where you are. No.
- 31:13Speaker 2: Devis is after her. Vinnie! Vinnie! Oh, Tom. Oh, thank heaven.
- 31:19Speaker 5: Oh, it's all right.
- 31:21Speaker 2: It's all right. Everything will be all right. Devis! Come
- 31:24Speaker 2: in here.
- 31:25Speaker 5: I didn't hurt her, Jim.
- 31:27Speaker 2: Come in here.
- 31:28Speaker 11: Now, don't go getting sore, Jim, because I'm in here.
- 31:33Speaker 2: Why, you... Don't hurt her. Jim! I told you to
- 31:37Speaker 2: leave her alone! I did, Jim, I did! I told you!
- 31:43Speaker 2: All right, get up. I'll get you first, Jim. I'll
- 31:50Speaker 2: kill you. All right. Try it. Well, go on. Draw.
- 32:00Speaker 2: You'd like me to, wouldn't you? I'm not going to. No,
- 32:05Speaker 2: I didn't think you would. All right, Owens. Back to
- 32:09Speaker 2: your room. You too, Mrs. Owens. I'll get you here, Jim.
- 32:14Speaker 2: I'll get you.
- 32:15Speaker 4: Yeah, you haven't got the guts.
- 32:19Speaker 2: Jim, doggone it.
- 32:20Speaker 5: I told you, be quiet.
- 32:21Speaker 2: The baby now. You're going to forget about her, Yancey. Yeah,
- 32:24Speaker 2: we'll take care of her. Tally.
- 32:27Speaker 5: Tally, honey.
- 32:28Speaker 2: I'll see both of you in the morning. Tom. Wait.
- 32:34Speaker 2: He may be listening at the door. All right.
- 32:40Speaker 5: Could you get word to the stage driver?
- 32:41Speaker 2: No.
- 32:42Speaker 5: Tom, what are we going to do?
- 32:44Speaker 2: I don't know. We've got to keep on thinking and trying.
- 32:48Speaker 5: But for how long? How much time have we got?
- 32:52Speaker 2: Until the stage comes through from California with that gold shipment.
- 32:57Speaker 2: Until tomorrow morning. Now, late at night, some 12 hours
- 33:17Speaker 2: had passed.
- 33:18Speaker 4: Since Zimmerman and his companions took over the station at
- 33:20Speaker 4: Rawhide Park. Locked in the small back room of the station,
- 33:25Speaker 4: Tom stares hopelessly through the barred windows while Vinnie attempts
- 33:29Speaker 4: to comfort the restless baby.
- 33:31Speaker 5: Now, now, Carrie, it's all right. No, I think it's
- 33:46Speaker 5: that howling coyote that's bothering me. There was just some
- 33:55Speaker 5: way of closing that window so we couldn't hear it.
- 33:57Speaker 2: It would be better if there was some way of
- 34:00Speaker 2: getting out through it. You know, the company put up
- 34:03Speaker 2: those iron bars so it was more valuable.
- 34:06Speaker 5: Thoughtful of them.
- 34:14Speaker 2: What is it? Look. Press your face against these bars
- 34:19Speaker 2: and look as far to the right as you can. Yeah.
- 34:21Speaker 2: You see that stank of firewood by the corral? Yes. Well,
- 34:26Speaker 2: that's about where you dropped my revolver, isn't that right?
- 34:29Speaker 5: Yes, on the far side.
- 34:30Speaker 2: Well, maybe it's still there. It must be. If anybody
- 34:33Speaker 2: found it, please hear about it. I think we've got
- 34:35Speaker 2: to get that gun. Well, how?
- 34:36Speaker 12: How?
- 34:39Speaker 2: If we could break a hole through this adobe wall
- 34:42Speaker 2: tunnel and open it big enough to crawl through it.
- 34:43Speaker 2: And dig it out with our fingernails, I suppose. I
- 34:47Speaker 2: only need something with a sharp point to it, sharp
- 34:49Speaker 2: and strong.
- 34:50Speaker 5: You must have a butcher knife out in the kitchen.
- 34:52Speaker 2: Oh, sure. Then let me get it. Will you? Yes,
- 34:55Speaker 2: it'll be easier for me. But how? Well, uh, well, yes,
- 35:01Speaker 2: I'll use this water pitcher. I'll tell them I need
- 35:04Speaker 2: water for the babies.
- 35:05Speaker 5: And I'll hide the knife inside the pitcher.
- 35:08Speaker 2: Oh, I don't know, can you?
- 35:09Speaker 5: We've got to try, Tom.
- 35:13Speaker 2: All right.
- 35:15Speaker 5: Zimmerman?
- 35:18Speaker 2: Zimmerman, come here. Tell me exactly.
- 35:20Speaker 5: Where I'll find that knife.
- 35:23Speaker 2: You know where the cask of water is?
- 35:25Speaker 5: Alongside the cup?
- 35:26Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right. The last time I saw it, it
- 35:28Speaker 2: was right under the table next to me. Good. What
- 35:32Speaker 2: do you want?
- 35:34Speaker 5: The baby's got a fever. I want to get her
- 35:36Speaker 5: some water.
- 35:37Speaker 2: All right, give me the picture.
- 35:39Speaker 5: No, I'll fill it. I don't know. The picture has
- 35:42Speaker 5: to be reached out first, Mr. Zimmerman. I don't want
- 35:45Speaker 5: to ask such a favor of you.
- 35:49Speaker 2: All right. Well, come on.
- 36:00Speaker 5: Would you know what time it is?
- 36:01Speaker 2: It's almost midnight.
- 36:04Speaker 5: Where's Tevis?
- 36:06Speaker 2: He's outside. I put him on lookout. You're sure? About what?
- 36:12Speaker 5: That he's on lookout.
- 36:14Speaker 2: What do you mean? Where'd you see him?
- 36:17Speaker 5: If you'll excuse me, Mrs. Zimmerman, I'd like to tell
- 36:19Speaker 5: this picture.
- 36:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I'd say. Where's Tevis? Well, he's outside, isn't he? Grat.
- 36:25Speaker 2: Have you seen him? Me, Sid? Tevis! Hey, Tevis! I
- 36:37Speaker 2: thought you said Tevis wasn't out there.
- 36:39Speaker 5: I didn't say that at all.
- 36:41Speaker 2: No? Then what were you trying to say?
- 36:43Speaker 5: Why, nothing.
- 36:45Speaker 8: Mr.
- 36:45Speaker 5: Dillon, are you always as nervous.
- 36:50Speaker 2: As this? You filled your pitcher? Yes. Then come on.
- 36:57Speaker 2: What's the matter with your baby?
- 36:59Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 36:59Speaker 2: She's got very evil. I don't know why she had
- 37:02Speaker 2: to be here anyway.
- 37:03Speaker 5: Why not?
- 37:03Speaker 2: I just don't like her being here, that's all.
- 37:09Speaker 5: Good night, Mr.
- 37:10Speaker 2: Zimmerman. Yeah. Good night. Did you get it?
- 37:18Speaker 5: Here.
- 37:19Speaker 2: Good. And I found a place to dig. Look, right
- 37:23Speaker 2: here at the base of the north wall. Tom? Oh,
- 37:40Speaker 2: this is going to be just like Brock. Knife hardly
- 37:43Speaker 2: makes a dent.
- 37:44Speaker 5: Let me try it for a while.
- 37:46Speaker 2: All right. You better let me take over for a while.
- 37:56Speaker 2: All right, here. Come on. Grant? Hey, Grant. Yes, David.
- 38:27Speaker 2: You want some whiskey? If you put it away, you
- 38:31Speaker 2: know what's inside. Yes, I know. Tom, Tom, I've broken through. Yeah.
- 38:48Speaker 5: All right, now we've.
- 38:50Speaker 2: Got to widen the hole.
- 38:52Speaker 5: And make it big enough to crawl through.
- 38:55Speaker 13: Give me the knife.
- 38:57Speaker 2: Come on. I told you to leave that whiskey alone.
- 39:13Speaker 2: I won't forget this, dear. I won't forget it.
- 39:18Speaker 6: Tom, the.
- 39:24Speaker 2: Sun's coming up. Can't you hurry? do you think I'm doing? Oh, Benny. Benny.
- 39:46Speaker 5: What is it?
- 39:46Speaker 2: Oh, the knife broke.
- 39:48Speaker 5: Oh, no, no.
- 39:49Speaker 2: Yeah, the blade's stuck tight on the adobe here.
- 39:51Speaker 5: Can you pull it loose?
- 39:52Speaker 2: Wait a minute. Oh, no, I can't get a hole. Oh, look, Penny,
- 39:58Speaker 2: do you think the hole's wide enough for you to
- 40:00Speaker 2: squeeze through?
- 40:01Speaker 5: No, I'm trying.
- 40:02Speaker 2: Come on.
- 40:04Speaker 5: Get down.
- 40:05Speaker 2: I'm pushing. All right, that's it. Just get your shoulders through.
- 40:10Speaker 2: Go on. Go on.
- 40:17Speaker 5: I can't. That hole's hardly big enough for a child
- 40:21Speaker 5: to crawl through.
- 40:23Speaker 2: A child... Penny, do you think maybe the baby... Oh, oh, Tom, really.
- 40:28Speaker 5: You think all I have to say is a calligrapher
- 40:30Speaker 5: climbed through this hole and crawled across the yard to
- 40:33Speaker 5: that pile of firewood and bring back that big, shiny revolver?
- 40:36Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, you're right. Oh, she's just old enough
- 40:40Speaker 2: to talk, to understand. Well, I guess that's it. Yes,
- 40:48Speaker 2: that's it.
- 40:49Speaker 5: Digging our hands raw like a couple of rats, but what...
- 40:54Speaker 5: For 24 hours, we've let those murderers walk all over us,
- 40:57Speaker 5: order us around, do this, do that, and we did it.
- 40:59Speaker 2: You can't argue with a gun.
- 41:01Speaker 5: Why not? Where has this gotten us?
- 41:03Speaker 2: Well, we're still alive, aren't we?
- 41:04Speaker 5: Still alive. You know what's going to happen just as
- 41:08Speaker 5: well as I do.
- 41:09Speaker 2: Well, sure I do.
- 41:10Speaker 9: Any minute now, they're going to come in here and
- 41:12Speaker 9: take me out there to harness that team.
- 41:14Speaker 2: I'm Zimmerman's bait for the stagecoach, a bait for ambush.
- 41:17Speaker 2: But what do you want me to do about it? Say,
- 41:19Speaker 2: I'm sorry, Mr. Zimmerman, I'm not working today?
- 41:21Speaker 5: Oh, Callie, Callie, please.
- 41:22Speaker 2: And maybe I've been wrong about something else, too. Maybe
- 41:25Speaker 2: we shouldn't have pretended to be Mr. and Mrs., but
- 41:27Speaker 2: I figured it was a good bargain for both of us.
- 41:29Speaker 2: I thought they'd treat you all right because they wanted
- 41:31Speaker 2: me to cooperate. Oh, yes.
- 41:33Speaker 5: They've just treated me wonderful, especially Heather.
- 41:35Speaker 2: All right, from here on out, you can just do
- 41:37Speaker 2: better on your own. Maybe you better tell Zimmerman who
- 41:39Speaker 2: you are.
- 41:39Speaker 5: Maybe I will.
- 41:41Speaker 2: Callie, stop it.
- 41:42Speaker 5: Stop it.
- 41:47Speaker 2: What's going on in there? Go ahead, Bennett. Now's the time.
- 41:50Speaker 2: Go ahead and tell him. Tell me what, Mrs. Owens? Well,
- 41:56Speaker 2: what did you want to tell me? Nothing.
- 42:01Speaker 5: It's nothing that concerns you, Mr.
- 42:02Speaker 2: Zimmerman.
- 42:03Speaker 5: A husband and wife can quarrel in private, can't they?
- 42:07Speaker 2: Well, it wasn't very private. Owens, the stage ought to
- 42:11Speaker 2: be along any time.
- 42:12Speaker 12: Get out there and hitch up the team.
- 42:13Speaker 2: All right.
- 42:15Speaker 5: Tom?
- 42:15Speaker 2: No, you stay in here, Mrs. Dorn. Tom? Tom?
- 42:24Speaker 5: Tom, oh, no. They must....
- 42:28Speaker 2: Maybe the stage won't come. Callie?
- 42:38Speaker 5: Callie, where are you?
- 42:43Speaker 2: It's got to be.
- 42:46Speaker 5: Tally? She couldn't have stopped through that hole. Tally?
- 42:53Speaker 2: Tally! What's all the yelling about?
- 43:04Speaker 5: My baby.
- 43:04Speaker 2: She's outside.
- 43:05Speaker 5: I've got to get to her.
- 43:06Speaker 2: No, you don't. Now, no trick.
- 43:07Speaker 5: But my baby, Callie.
- 43:08Speaker 2: No. Let me go. Let me go. Get back. Let
- 43:11Speaker 2: go of her. Zim, I didn't do nothing. She was
- 43:13Speaker 2: yelling and pounding on the door. I warned you for
- 43:16Speaker 2: the last time. You hear me? You hear me? No, Zim.
- 43:19Speaker 2: No more. All right. Get back in the room, Mrs. Zorn.
- 43:23Speaker 12: I'll say that he doesn't bother you anymore.
- 43:28Speaker 2: Travis. I said I'd get you, Zim. I told you
- 43:33Speaker 2: I would. Come back. Come back here. You come back. Come.
- 43:42Speaker 8: Come.
- 43:43Speaker 5: Benny.
- 43:45Speaker 2: Benny, what's happened?
- 43:46Speaker 5: The baby. He crawled through the hole. We've got to
- 43:48Speaker 5: find him.
- 43:49Speaker 2: All right. Come on. Let's get that gun. Show me
- 43:51Speaker 2: where it is. Come on.
- 43:53Speaker 8: Where are you?
- 43:55Speaker 2: Come quick.
- 43:56Speaker 5: The other side of the room. I'll come. The other side.
- 44:04Speaker 2: All right, where is it?
- 44:05Speaker 5: I don't know, but it's got to be here.
- 44:07Speaker 2: Youngster! Jim said somebody killed him. I did. I'm the
- 44:12Speaker 2: boss now, you hear? You want all the gold for yourself? No,
- 44:17Speaker 2: that's not right. Tom. Yeah, that's just one less of them. Now, now, now,
- 44:23Speaker 2: don't shoot, heavy. Don't shoot. I'm leaving. The gun. The gun.
- 44:26Speaker 2: Where is it? Tom.
- 44:28Speaker 5: There. Almost under that wall. All right, then.
- 44:34Speaker 2: Keep down, Tom.
- 44:34Speaker 8: Keep down.
- 44:36Speaker 2: It's no use, Owen. I'm coming after you. Come ahead, Tevis. Hey!
- 44:44Speaker 2: You didn't expect that, did you, Tevis? Let's let you
- 44:50Speaker 2: know I've got plenty full of knowing. My gun and
- 44:53Speaker 2: Zim's and Cracky's. Oh, Tom.
- 44:56Speaker 11: There's Callie.
- 44:59Speaker 5: I got you.
- 44:59Speaker 8: No, you don't.
- 45:00Speaker 2: You're taking me. Christopher. Now, you want to give Tevis ideas? Hey, Owen!
- 45:05Speaker 2: You see that, baby?
- 45:08Speaker 5: It's washed. No plumbing.
- 45:16Speaker 2: Next time I may not miss. Oh, Donald. Donald. Keep
- 45:19Speaker 2: down and keep quiet.
- 45:21Speaker 5: You better throw it on your throne, Owen.
- 45:22Speaker 2: Come out and open.
- 45:23Speaker 13: How about it, Owen?
- 45:35Speaker 5: All right.
- 45:37Speaker 2: Tom. Keep that aside. Stand up, all. Let's see you.
- 45:41Speaker 12: That's it.
- 45:43Speaker 2: That's all I can do. Good. You're my real birdie.
- 45:49Speaker 2: Now start walking towards me. Let's start walking. That's it.
- 45:55Speaker 5: That's nice.
- 46:05Speaker 2: It's a real knife. What you stopping for? Don't yell
- 46:11Speaker 2: at it now. Come on. He's coming.
- 46:22Speaker 12: He show me how a real man dies, huh?
- 46:25Speaker 2: That's it. Come on. Come on. Just a couple steps more, Tommy.
- 46:30Speaker 5: Oh, you.
- 46:31Speaker 2: You... Callie!
- 46:36Speaker 5: Callie, come here!
- 46:39Speaker 13: Tom!
- 46:42Speaker 5: Tom, are you all right?
- 46:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm all right.
- 46:47Speaker 13: And I was worried about your being able to handle
- 46:49Speaker 13: a gun. Thank you, Vinnie.
- 47:00Speaker 5: There's this page. Yes.
- 47:03Speaker 2: When it leaves you and the baby can be on it.
- 47:06Speaker 5: What about you? You're leaving too, aren't you?
- 47:09Speaker 2: No, my relief won't get here until next week. I'm
- 47:12Speaker 2: just going to have to wait until then.
- 47:14Speaker 5: Tom, would you mind if I wait and.
- 47:18Speaker 2: Go back with you? I was hoping you might want to.
- 47:23Speaker 2: I do, Tom. I do.
- 47:25Speaker 9: I do.
- 47:33Speaker 2: I'd better answer that bugle and let him know that
- 47:35Speaker 2: everything's all right. It is all right. Isn't it, Betty? Oh, yes, Tom.
- 47:45Speaker 5: Everything's all right now.
- 48:06Speaker 4: Donna Reed and Jeffrey Hunter, step forward and take a bow.
