Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I got to give some love. Bryce Terang was one
- 0:02Speaker 1: of my favorite players on the WBC. I got to
- 0:05Speaker 1: be around him and watch his power for a second baseman.
- 0:08Speaker 1: I don't think I appreciate it. And Mark DeRosa talks
- 0:11Speaker 1: about this all the time, like watching him hit with
- 0:14Speaker 1: the Schwarbers and the Harpers and that group. He was
- 0:17Speaker 1: launching balls and goes oppo off Scooble, left on left,
- 0:21Speaker 1: just sell out to that 2-0 hit was really, really cool.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Welcome back to Ross and Rizzo Unfiltered. I'm Anthony Rizzo
- 0:30Speaker 2: with my partner, David Ross. The National League Championship Series
- 0:35Speaker 2: is underway, and the Brewers defeat the almighty Dodgers 2-1
- 0:40Speaker 2: in Game 1, Rossi. Mizorowski, good, good enough to win.
- 0:47Speaker 2: He hasn't been great in the playoffs, but the Brewers
- 0:49Speaker 2: have won both of his starts. Brewers play some small ball,
- 0:53Speaker 2: and they end up winning 2-1. championship series underway partner.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Buddy before we get into that i need to hear
- 1:02Speaker 1: about this marathon like that that i need i need
- 1:05Speaker 1: every detail we haven't talked on purpose well just so
- 1:07Speaker 1: i can hear about how hard that i thought you
- 1:11Speaker 1: never asked.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Yeah they give you a medal for that are you
- 1:17Speaker 2: kidding me they're giving you more than just a medal
- 1:21Speaker 2: Thought you'd never ask, Rossi.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Oh, sick.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:24Speaker 1: That is sick. You're bad.
- 1:27Speaker 2: World major. Dude, the marathon was a grind. I mean,
- 1:35Speaker 2: it was so much fun for how much pain you
- 1:39Speaker 2: put yourself through. I'm not kidding. I thought I was
- 1:41Speaker 2: in the depths of hell at one point. I didn't
- 1:44Speaker 2: think I was going to make it, and you just
- 1:46Speaker 2: got to dig deep, but the people at bank of
- 1:49Speaker 2: America who, who put on this marathon, the entire city
- 1:52Speaker 2: of Chicago, it, it was incredible. Like I can't say
- 1:56Speaker 2: enough good things on how they treated me and my family. Um,
- 2:02Speaker 2: I partnered with Brooks and they were incredible. Got to
- 2:05Speaker 2: hang out at their, um, activation site one day, just
- 2:10Speaker 2: so many cool things. So many, it's just such an
- 2:12Speaker 2: emotional day, bro. It was, I don't know how I
- 2:15Speaker 2: did it.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Honestly. I saw pictures, bro. Like your shorts look like
- 2:20Speaker 1: you went swimming. It was, it looked, it looked, it
- 2:23Speaker 1: looked nasty. It looked really bad. Was there, when did
- 2:25Speaker 1: you go to the playlist? Like, was it early or,
- 2:28Speaker 1: or were we like halfway? I saw Emily did a
- 2:32Speaker 1: keg stand. Is that right? Like she did a keg stand.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Emily did a keg stand on mile like 11, 12. Right. And,
- 2:44Speaker 2: I mean, she was just partying. Like she was just,
- 2:46Speaker 2: she was going into this running at my pace and
- 2:49Speaker 2: her best friend's pace. Sam Judge, Aaron's wife, Brandon as well.
- 2:54Speaker 2: She's a beast. But Emily was just kind of enjoying
- 2:57Speaker 2: the atmosphere. She trained really hard for New York and
- 3:00Speaker 2: crushed that. So this one, she was kind of just
- 3:02Speaker 2: going to go at everyone else's pace. She did a
- 3:05Speaker 2: keg stand. I went to the play this probably, we
- 3:07Speaker 2: saw our family at mile five for the first time.
- 3:11Speaker 2: So that was really cool seeing the baby and everyone
- 3:12Speaker 2: there cheering. And then right after that, it got a
- 3:15Speaker 2: little quiet. So I popped in the headphones and was running. Dude,
- 3:21Speaker 2: it was just nonstop.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Rizzo!
- 3:24Speaker 2: It was so cool hearing everyone cheer. So I play
- 3:28Speaker 2: the playlist. Then I take them out around mile 11
- 3:30Speaker 2: when we see our family again. And they have all
- 3:33Speaker 2: these drink stations, aid stations. So I'm just dumping water
- 3:36Speaker 2: on my head. Broke my headphones. These are another pair.
- 3:40Speaker 2: So I ended up raw-dawing. the second half of the marathon,
- 3:44Speaker 2: no music, which is fine because you could just go
- 3:46Speaker 2: off the energy of the crowd. But my SOS playlist was,
- 3:51Speaker 2: was not to be heard once, which is kind of depressing.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Um, all that work, all that work. You did it though, bro.
- 3:58Speaker 1: That's bucket list stuff, man. I, I, I'm jealous. There's
- 4:01Speaker 1: no way I could, I could do that. That was, that's, uh,
- 4:04Speaker 1: that's impressive. I saw Jake Arrieta. You, you raise a
- 4:07Speaker 1: lot of money for the Rizzo family foundation. Yeah, we raised,
- 4:11Speaker 1: I believe, well over $ 500, 000. So it's just so many
- 4:16Speaker 1: great causes in this marathon. Dude, I saw, so it
- 4:21Speaker 1: was like mile.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Maybe 16, 17 where there was a Livestrong tent. And
- 4:27Speaker 2: when I was going through my cancer treatment, Livestrong was,
- 4:31Speaker 2: you know, everything. It was the Livestrong, Lance Armstrong's Livestrong Foundation.
- 4:36Speaker 2: And I saw that tent and I crossed over To
- 4:38Speaker 2: it And I got uh One of the yellow Livestrong
- 4:41Speaker 2: bands That I haven't seen In probably.
- 4:42Speaker 3: 15 years Yeah yeah Dude I almost started Freaking bawling
- 4:48Speaker 3: It was like You know Emotional Yeah you're just In
- 4:51Speaker 3: your own mental state Running I'm like About to die
- 4:55Speaker 3: It feels like And It was just It was an
- 4:59Speaker 3: emotional Emotional point but That's cool.
- 5:01Speaker 2: The crowd The crowd man It's like Nothing you've ever
- 5:04Speaker 2: experienced It's just so positive Uh Got people handing out beer,
- 5:11Speaker 2: pickle shots, Malort shots. You name it, people were handing
- 5:16Speaker 2: it to you. Everyone's so nice and encouraging. It was
- 5:19Speaker 2: just a special day. And then my brother and I
- 5:22Speaker 2: ended up running the second half together. We just stuck
- 5:26Speaker 2: together because we were the cabooses. Well, at least I
- 5:29Speaker 2: was the caboose. My brother stayed with me. And we
- 5:32Speaker 2: ended up doing a keg stand at mile 24. So
- 5:34Speaker 2: I need to get that video. Someone has to have
- 5:36Speaker 2: a video somewhere out there.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Send it in, people.
- 5:40Speaker 2: All right.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Well, congrats, bro. That's awesome. And to you and all
- 5:44Speaker 1: your family over there supporting you.
- 5:46Speaker 2: I'll do the rest of the show like this.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Don't do that. Don't do that. Let's get back to
- 5:51Speaker 1: the Brewers Dodgers. That was great. That was cool stuff. Yeah, man. Like,
- 5:58Speaker 1: first of all, I thought. the American family field was electric.
- 6:05Speaker 1: That looked super loud in there. And you know how
- 6:07Speaker 1: the roof was open, like a beautiful night. And the
- 6:11Speaker 1: Dodgers got off. I wrote down in my notes, man,
- 6:14Speaker 1: it's like, it looked like they were playing pepper. Like
- 6:15Speaker 1: they weren't trying to do too much, just trying to
- 6:17Speaker 1: take base hits. A lot of just singles and, you know,
- 6:20Speaker 1: making Miz, Jacob Mizorowski throw strikes and get in the
- 6:24Speaker 1: zone and hitting the ball the other way to score,
- 6:27Speaker 1: go up one, nothing. I was like, it looked like
- 6:29Speaker 1: trouble to me for the Miz to, the way the
- 6:31Speaker 1: Dodgers were approaching the at-bats.
- 6:33Speaker 2: No doubt. I mean, dude, that's such a veteran lineup.
- 6:35Speaker 2: You know what I mean? No one, no ace in
- 6:38Speaker 2: this league. It doesn't matter who you are. He's the
- 6:41Speaker 2: National League Cy Young Award winner. They're not going to
- 6:44Speaker 2: be phased by him. And they had a great game plan.
- 6:47Speaker 2: Miz has a what? A 40% clip of swing and
- 6:50Speaker 2: miss rate. The Dodgers last night were 18%. So that
- 6:53Speaker 2: just goes to tell you that maybe in that pregame season,
- 6:57Speaker 2: hitters meeting they were like hey let's just emphasize not
- 7:00Speaker 2: trying to do too much off this guy let's take
- 7:02Speaker 2: what he gives us put the ball in play and
- 7:04Speaker 2: we'll go from there and they took a one one
- 7:06Speaker 2: run lead which last year a year ago the Brewers
- 7:11Speaker 2: got swept by the Dodgers so them taking a one
- 7:14Speaker 2: run lead you know the site game of Milwaukee's oh
- 7:18Speaker 2: man like the Dodgers coming in back-to-back champs who got
- 7:21Speaker 2: swept by them last year and they tie it up
- 7:24Speaker 2: and then What I loved is the small ball, bro.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Cooper Pratt dropping a bunt down, getting the guy over
- 7:31Speaker 2: to second. Then the next hitter drives him in. And
- 7:33Speaker 2: that's Brewers baseball. And that's playoff baseball. If you can
- 7:37Speaker 2: execute those things in the playoffs, you have a really
- 7:40Speaker 2: good chance at winning. And I know they won 2-1.
- 7:43Speaker 2: The defense in this game was amazing. There's a ton
- 7:45Speaker 2: of double plays, but I love the small ball.
- 7:49Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Well, that's what I wrote down that too. Some of
- 7:51Speaker 1: the stats they were talking about on TV, like Dodgers
- 7:53Speaker 1: led in NL and double plays that they hit into. So,
- 7:58Speaker 1: you know, for them to get out of that early on,
- 8:01Speaker 1: you know, one out bases loaded, getting that big double
- 8:04Speaker 1: play was huge for, for Jacob Mizorowski, but I got
- 8:08Speaker 1: to get some love. Bryce Terang was one of my
- 8:10Speaker 1: favorite players on the, on the WBC. I got to
- 8:13Speaker 1: be around him and watch his power for a second baseman.
- 8:16Speaker 1: I don't, I don't think I appreciate it. And, Mark
- 8:18Speaker 1: DeRosa talks about this all the time, like watching him
- 8:21Speaker 1: hit with the Schwarbers and the Harpers in that group.
- 8:24Speaker 1: He was launching balls and goes oppo off Scooble left
- 8:28Speaker 1: on left, just sell out to that 2-0 hit was really,
- 8:31Speaker 1: really cool. And then, you know, like you said, bottom
- 8:34Speaker 1: of the order, Luis Lora, just getting that base hit
- 8:37Speaker 1: RBI to put them up 2-1. That had to be
- 8:39Speaker 1: great breathing room for the Brewers who, like you said,
- 8:43Speaker 1: felt like we need to break this seal. They're up 1-0.
- 8:46Speaker 1: They swept us last time. You got to get that
- 8:48Speaker 1: monkey off your back a little bit. And they go
- 8:50Speaker 1: on to win the game. The bullpens, the bullpens.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Lights out.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Man, man. I mean, we, I don't know. I keep,
- 8:58Speaker 1: I keep saying this, but I don't think I gave
- 9:00Speaker 1: the Brewers bullpen enough credit during the season, how good
- 9:03Speaker 1: they were. And the way, you know, Ashby to me
- 9:07Speaker 1: is one of the just secret weapons in the game.
- 9:09Speaker 1: I played with his uncle, Andy Ashby. And, and I just, I,
- 9:15Speaker 1: I smile. He's one of my favorite. teammates all the time. Andy,
- 9:18Speaker 1: Andy Ashby, he'd be in the bullpen. He was a
- 9:20Speaker 1: starter for a while, but came down when he was
- 9:22Speaker 1: kind of a swing man when I was there. And, uh, I,
- 9:26Speaker 1: he would come down to the bullpen. I'm like, Ash,
- 9:27Speaker 1: how we, how's it feel it? He was like coming
- 9:29Speaker 1: out like a cotton ball, Rossi, one of my all
- 9:33Speaker 1: time favorite lines, but his, uh, nephew, uh, just absolutely
- 9:37Speaker 1: dominant from the left side. He's got unhittable stuff. Electric,
- 9:43Speaker 1: 96-plus from the left side, a dirty change and a
- 9:45Speaker 1: nasty breaking ball. Two-and-a-half ERA over the last two years.
- 9:50Speaker 1: He's been really good in that role for them. Struggled
- 9:52Speaker 1: a little bit as a starter, as a rookie, and
- 9:54Speaker 1: he's found a home in the bullpen kind of as
- 9:55Speaker 1: a long guy and been great. Those bullpens are nasty. D.L.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Hall, too, yesterday, I believe.
- 10:01Speaker 1: Yeah, there you go.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Two innings. And then McGill, big McGill, Magoo, in the
- 10:07Speaker 2: back end just shutting it down. So he's been perfect
- 10:09Speaker 2: this postseason. But, bro, that Terang home run, Oppo left
- 10:14Speaker 2: on left, like– My God, bro. What a superstar. And
- 10:19Speaker 2: this Brewers team, you know, best team in baseball, best record.
- 10:24Speaker 2: They fly under the radar all year because they play Milwaukee,
- 10:27Speaker 2: which I say that with all due respect. But now
- 10:30Speaker 2: these guys on the biggest stage playing the Dodgers, seeing them,
- 10:34Speaker 2: these guys shine and seeing this team shine is, you know,
- 10:38Speaker 2: good for these players, man. Like they deserve these flowers.
- 10:41Speaker 2: I know it's one game. And Dave Roberts said after
- 10:44Speaker 2: the game, look, It's a seven-game series. You can't expect
- 10:47Speaker 2: to beat the best team in baseball in four games.
- 10:50Speaker 2: So the Dodgers have the right mentality. They have the
- 10:54Speaker 2: right attitude. But, man, is this a huge win for
- 10:58Speaker 2: the Milwaukee Brewers. This is, I feel like game one
- 11:01Speaker 2: for the Brewers was a must win. And if you're
- 11:03Speaker 2: the Dodgers, like, all right, it's just one game.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Yeah, and we've talked about it already, but their veteran presence,
- 11:10Speaker 1: the way they approached the first couple at-bats, like, they're
- 11:12Speaker 1: not worried about anything. And you saw there, like, two
- 11:15Speaker 1: quick outs from Trevor McGill to end the game to
- 11:17Speaker 1: add the back end of the game. And then they
- 11:19Speaker 1: got traffic, a really, uh, poised at bat from, um, um,
- 11:27Speaker 1: the right fielder, uh, Tucker, sorry. And yeah. And the,
- 11:31Speaker 1: and the young kid, I mean, they just to.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Get first, walking in the ninth.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:35Speaker 2: Walkie.
- 11:36Speaker 1: I mean, that was in that environment for, to be
- 11:38Speaker 1: 21 years old and to take that, to take that
- 11:41Speaker 1: walk and not try to get too amped up. And
- 11:42Speaker 1: then Mookie hit that ball pretty solid to right center.
- 11:45Speaker 1: But for now, yeah, we've got their work cut out
- 11:48Speaker 1: for us. I've got here teams that have won game
- 11:51Speaker 1: one in the current 2-3-2 format have won the series 67%
- 11:56Speaker 1: of the time. So getting some stats to throw out
- 11:59Speaker 1: there for the folks. The Brewers are in a good position.
- 12:01Speaker 1: I don't think the Dodgers are going away. I'm going
- 12:03Speaker 1: to get my polymarket pick right now. Dodgers are 55%
- 12:08Speaker 1: to the yes to win game two, $ 100. Trade will
- 12:12Speaker 1: get you back 174. The Brewers are 45% to the
- 12:15Speaker 1: yes to win game two. And $ 100 will get you 214.
- 12:19Speaker 1: I really believe this is going to be a back-and-forth series.
- 12:22Speaker 1: It's probably going to go seven games. And with Yamamoto
- 12:25Speaker 1: on the mound, I'm picking the Dodgers, 55% to the yes.
- 12:28Speaker 1: So that $ 100 will get you 174. But who doesn't
- 12:29Speaker 1: want to make $ 74? You like your money. I like
- 12:35Speaker 1: my money.
- 12:36Speaker 2: I like to have money. Look, as good as the
- 12:40Speaker 2: Brewers have to be feeling after game one, you got
- 12:43Speaker 2: Yamamoto game two. You got Blake Snell game three. You
- 12:47Speaker 2: got Tyler Glass now game four. Then you got a
- 12:51Speaker 2: version of Scooble and Yamamoto again for five, six, and seven. So,
- 12:56Speaker 2: I mean, it's just like these are the way these
- 13:00Speaker 2: games are going to have to be won. And the
- 13:02Speaker 2: good thing for the Brewers is this is how they've
- 13:04Speaker 2: won games all year. They've come back. They scratch and claw.
- 13:07Speaker 2: They do the little things. So, I mean, this is
- 13:11Speaker 2: just one round of this series. And hopefully this National
- 13:16Speaker 2: League Championship Series gives us, you know, a deep 6-7
- 13:19Speaker 2: game round because both of these teams deserve it. Both
- 13:24Speaker 2: of these teams will be on full display. So, I'm
- 13:27Speaker 2: excited for Game 2 tonight. It's– now we– these seven-game
- 13:31Speaker 2: series for– for all the fans. These are the big
- 13:34Speaker 2: boy series, right? I know it's deeper in the playoffs
- 13:37Speaker 2: when you go to the World Series, but these seven-game series,
- 13:40Speaker 2: this tests your entire depth. This tests the whole roster.
- 13:44Speaker 2: You can't just throw your same bullpen guys every day
- 13:47Speaker 2: because game five, six, and seven, these guys will be gassed.
- 13:50Speaker 2: So this is when... the depth of your team really shines.
- 13:55Speaker 1: And they'll see him a lot with all those at-bats,
- 13:57Speaker 1: like we said.
- 13:58Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, their bullpens had to be worked, what,
- 14:00Speaker 2: four innings? Both bullpens had to be worked four or
- 14:02Speaker 2: five innings?
- 14:04Speaker 1: Yeah. It's going to catch up. There's something about the
- 14:07Speaker 1: warm summer air and a cold corona with Lyme that
- 14:10Speaker 1: makes the roar of the crowd sound a lot like
- 14:12Speaker 1: the roar of the waves.
- 14:13Speaker 4: That's because this is our playa, and the best seats
- 14:15Speaker 4: are always wherever you're sitting.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Whether it's a weeknight game under the lights or a
- 14:19Speaker 1: Sunday afternoon in the sun, You know baseball isn't about
- 14:22Speaker 1: rushing around. It's about settling in, letting the game come
- 14:26Speaker 1: to you. And nothing pairs better than an ice-cold Corona. Nothing.
- 14:31Speaker 4: So find your seat, your Corona, and your line. Because
- 14:35Speaker 4: real fans know the only thing better than nine innings
- 14:38Speaker 4: is extra innings. Especially on La Playa.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Corona.
- 14:43Speaker 4: La Playa awaits.
- 14:45Speaker 1: The official cerveza of Major League Baseball. Get yours at ordercorona.com.
- 14:50Speaker 1: For 21 plus, relax responsibly. Corona Extra Beer, imported by
- 14:55Speaker 1: Crown Imports, Chicago, Illinois. What's up, guys? I need to
- 14:59Speaker 1: tell you about this new prediction market called Polymarket. It's
- 15:02Speaker 1: the best new way to trade in sports. In the past,
- 15:05Speaker 1: if you wanted action on the game, you put some
- 15:07Speaker 1: money in, and if your team was doing well and
- 15:09Speaker 1: you wanted to cash out, they'd lock the trade and
- 15:12Speaker 1: take a huge fee. But Polymarket is a prediction market.
- 15:15Speaker 1: It's a stock exchange for sports, buying in and selling
- 15:18Speaker 1: out on your terms. I've tried them all and Polymarket
- 15:21Speaker 1: is simply the best prediction market. Better than DraftKings, FanDuel, Kalshi,
- 15:26Speaker 1: you name it. They're so confident you'll never go back
- 15:29Speaker 1: to the other guys. They're giving you a free $ 25
- 15:31Speaker 1: on your first trade when you deposit just $ 10. And
- 15:34Speaker 1: now they've launched a new feature, Squads, a group chat
- 15:37Speaker 1: where you can see what everyone is trading. So download
- 15:40Speaker 1: the Polymarket app today and use the code RossRizzo when
- 15:43Speaker 1: you sign up. That's code RossRizzo and get $ 25 free today.
- 15:48Speaker 1: After you deposit just $ 10. Let's talk about, we haven't
- 15:51Speaker 1: got to talk a little bit about the Rays-Guardias. Just
- 15:54Speaker 1: touch on that series, man. That's going to be a
- 15:57Speaker 1: good one down in Tampa. It's kicking off tonight.
- 15:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, dude, the Guardians, man. Coming back down 0-2.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Winning at home in the Game 5 was just incredible.
- 16:08Speaker 2: Congrats to Stephen Vogt and that team. They just, I
- 16:11Speaker 2: feel like that team is.
- 16:11Speaker 1: Jose Ramirez doing Hall of Fame shit.
- 16:14Speaker 2: Yes, that ball out of the dirt. Just incredible. Yeah,
- 16:18Speaker 2: good for him. He had a down year. He was
- 16:20Speaker 2: hurt throughout the year, and he comes back and has
- 16:24Speaker 2: the big hit to send him to the championship series.
- 16:26Speaker 2: So just the fact that they were down 0-2, Rossi,
- 16:30Speaker 2: it was raining. It was raining in Chicago, right? Or
- 16:34Speaker 2: I'm sorry, it was raining in Cleveland, and they're playing
- 16:36Speaker 2: a team from Chicago in game five.
- 16:38Speaker 1: I thought it was going to be bad vibes for Cleveland.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Maybe that's– they needed to break that curse.
- 16:45Speaker 2: Yeah, but I mean– Do the Guardians have a shot
- 16:50Speaker 2: against the Rays in this series?
- 16:52Speaker 1: Doesn't it feel like the... Here's the two narratives. They
- 17:00Speaker 1: spent all their bullets to get through that tough series
- 17:03Speaker 1: against the White Sox, where it's back and forth, down 0-2,
- 17:06Speaker 1: and they come back, and they got all the momentum,
- 17:09Speaker 1: and you could see the excitement in that team, or...
- 17:14Speaker 1: do they carry that momentum into this round and whatever goes, right?
- 17:18Speaker 1: I mean, there's two sides to the coin. And it
- 17:21Speaker 1: feels like, to me, they spent a lot of bullets.
- 17:25Speaker 1: And they didn't hit. They still haven't really busted out.
- 17:28Speaker 1: A couple of those nine-run games. But, again, back when
- 17:33Speaker 1: it was really good pitching and that last game, I
- 17:36Speaker 1: thought the two starters were great in that game five
- 17:40Speaker 1: against the White Sox. You know, it was a 2-0 game.
- 17:43Speaker 1: Nobody really hit. And the Rays have really good pitches.
- 17:45Speaker 1: Got Drew Raffinson on the mound tonight, and we know
- 17:48Speaker 1: how nasty he can be. I'm excited for this series.
- 17:52Speaker 1: What do you think? Do you think the momentum carries,
- 17:55Speaker 1: or do you think they spend a lot of bullets?
- 17:58Speaker 2: I think it could carry. Maybe they steal game one
- 18:00Speaker 2: versus Rasmussen, but Rasmussen's another guy that just kind of
- 18:04Speaker 2: goes under the radar year in and year out and
- 18:07Speaker 2: is just a front-line ace. So the Rays are totally–
- 18:11Speaker 2: set up. Bullpen, everything set up. Their guys are rested.
- 18:15Speaker 2: They just swept the Yankees. They can ride. The Guardians
- 18:20Speaker 2: can ride some momentum and maybe steal game one, but
- 18:24Speaker 2: their depth is going to show. I believe they just
- 18:28Speaker 2: don't have the depth to carry them through a seven-game
- 18:31Speaker 2: series versus the Rays, unless their offense starts going off. Obviously,
- 18:36Speaker 2: if guys get hot and they score five, six runs
- 18:38Speaker 2: a game, I think for sure they can, but This
- 18:42Speaker 2: Rays team is really good, man, and hopefully it's a
- 18:45Speaker 2: good series. I mean, look, Rossi, the Rays and Brewers
- 18:49Speaker 2: in the World Series, you manifested it.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Hey, I just want to say I'm four from four
- 18:53Speaker 1: this round. All my teams are in. I just want
- 18:56Speaker 1: to throw that out there as just a little bit
- 18:58Speaker 1: of shade real quick. You know what I mean?
- 19:00Speaker 2: Let's get to these 10-plus callbacks. Yes. Hey, I was
- 19:05Speaker 2: after the marathon yesterday. We were hanging out, and I
- 19:08Speaker 2: was with Emily's cousin, And he just graduated Ohio State
- 19:12Speaker 2: a few years ago. Shout out, OH, all the OH
- 19:15Speaker 2: fans out there. But his friends were here, and they
- 19:17Speaker 2: listened to the show, big fans of the program. And
- 19:20Speaker 2: I would give us, what do you got? Like, what
- 19:22Speaker 2: do you like about the show? Give me some constructive criticism.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Give me feedback. And he's like, bro, the best part
- 19:27Speaker 2: are the questions. Like, I love the baseball insight of
- 19:31Speaker 2: some things people don't know. So thank you, everyone, for
- 19:34Speaker 2: sending the questions in.
- 19:35Speaker 1: Yeah, yes.
- 19:36Speaker 2: RossandRizzo at GMA.com. You can leave a YouTube comment or
- 19:40Speaker 2: a social comment. We love answering these questions about things
- 19:45Speaker 2: that maybe you don't understand that we could bring you
- 19:47Speaker 2: inside the game or in the clubhouse. so first emails
- 19:50Speaker 2: from Adam Mays tipping pitches when tipping pitches when playing
- 19:57Speaker 2: did you guys see reoccurring tipping from the same pitchers
- 20:00Speaker 2: in other words multiple times you saw someone where they're
- 20:03Speaker 2: tipping the same way do you think tipping is more
- 20:05Speaker 2: of a short-term thing due to other teammates and slash
- 20:08Speaker 2: coaches figuring it out quickly?
- 20:10Speaker 1: Well, good question. I had a teammate by the name
- 20:14Speaker 1: of Sean Green, great Dodger player, one of my favorite
- 20:17Speaker 1: teammates of all time. And his line was always, once
- 20:20Speaker 1: a tipper, always a tipper. You may change something and
- 20:24Speaker 1: you may try to fix, but something else is going
- 20:25Speaker 1: to pop up. You know, there's so many camera angles
- 20:30Speaker 1: and so many things. I think earlier on in my career, guys–
- 20:35Speaker 1: the word didn't get around as much, you know, you
- 20:37Speaker 1: weren't so friendly with other teammates, other guys on the
- 20:40Speaker 1: other team. And I think now everybody's kind of in
- 20:43Speaker 1: the same boat. It's so, you know, similar agencies, the
- 20:48Speaker 1: agencies have gotten so big, stuff like that. So word
- 20:50Speaker 1: travels pretty fast and guys fix it. Or you just
- 20:53Speaker 1: have an outlier of an, of a day of an outing.
- 20:57Speaker 1: And you're like, wait a minute, something was off. I
- 20:59Speaker 1: was executing pitches. That was a red flag for me
- 21:02Speaker 1: as a catcher. Like, they should be set up here.
- 21:04Speaker 1: They can't be taking that good of a swing on
- 21:06Speaker 1: this pitch. And so that was the red flag for me.
- 21:09Speaker 1: And you'd start kind of having your coaching staff dive
- 21:12Speaker 1: deep into like, what do you see? Am I doing anything?
- 21:15Speaker 1: I think I told the story about Marcus Stroman. We
- 21:19Speaker 1: were in, he was having a great year for us
- 21:22Speaker 1: when I was managing and we go to Minnesota and
- 21:26Speaker 1: he couldn't get, I think I gave up four runs,
- 21:29Speaker 1: five runs and two innings. I had to take him out.
- 21:31Speaker 1: I'm just a weird game. They were hitting everything hard.
- 21:35Speaker 1: Come to find out afterwards, every off-speed pitch, he was
- 21:39Speaker 1: sticking his tongue out.
- 21:40Speaker 3: Yep.
- 21:40Speaker 1: Every off-speed pitch. So, like, they had that, and they
- 21:42Speaker 1: found that on a camera. He had no idea. We
- 21:45Speaker 1: had no idea. And he was pitching great. Nobody else
- 21:47Speaker 1: had caught it. But that's one of the ones that
- 21:49Speaker 1: come to mind right away. And you try to fix it,
- 21:52Speaker 1: but sometimes something else may pop up.
- 21:55Speaker 2: Yeah. In today's game, the tips go quick, right? And
- 22:02Speaker 2: pitchers are aware of it. They have pretty much every
- 22:04Speaker 2: team I would imagine has their own guys on the inside,
- 22:08Speaker 2: always monitoring their pitchers and other pitchers. But there are
- 22:12Speaker 2: things that pop up all the time and pitchers don't
- 22:15Speaker 2: realize that they're doing it, right? Whether it's with the mouth,
- 22:18Speaker 2: whether it's how they grip the ball. I used to
- 22:20Speaker 2: love guys who grip split all the time, preset split,
- 22:24Speaker 2: because then when they would go in their glove, if
- 22:27Speaker 2: you saw movement, if you saw a certain type of movement,
- 22:31Speaker 2: you knew he was switching off the split. And then
- 22:34Speaker 2: some guys would always dig in there, so you had
- 22:36Speaker 2: to tell what movement it was. Was it the exaggerated
- 22:39Speaker 2: one or was it the less? Where was his glove positioning?
- 22:42Speaker 2: Some guys had different glove positioning. Some guys were tipping
- 22:45Speaker 2: their pitches from the third base coach or the first
- 22:47Speaker 2: base coach. Some guys tipped from second base. So that
- 22:49Speaker 2: cat and mouse game will always be played because it's
- 22:52Speaker 2: so hard to hit and any edge you can get.
- 22:55Speaker 2: But right now, I do think it's a lot more
- 22:58Speaker 2: of a short-term thing. And also... For the pitchers, I
- 23:03Speaker 2: think that if they know they had a tip one game,
- 23:07Speaker 2: I would use that in my advantage, and I would
- 23:09Speaker 2: be reverse tipping. You know what I mean? If I'm
- 23:12Speaker 2: doing something with my mouth on curveball, like opening my mouth,
- 23:16Speaker 2: I would start opening my mouth in a big spot
- 23:18Speaker 2: and throw a fastball.
- 23:20Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 23:21Speaker 2: You know, if you can think about that.
- 23:23Speaker 1: Well, that was the– I was talking about this on
- 23:25Speaker 1: McAfee the other day. We're talking about stealing signs, and
- 23:28Speaker 1: I would set guys up at second to– to if
- 23:31Speaker 1: we've got the at bat and they thought, okay, I
- 23:34Speaker 1: know they got it. I can tell their signs. And
- 23:36Speaker 1: now like a three, two big pitch, I would, I'd
- 23:39Speaker 1: be able to go with, set them up. Like I
- 23:42Speaker 1: would throw a fastball and then throw a split or
- 23:44Speaker 1: something like that. Yeah. It's good to, if you can,
- 23:46Speaker 1: that's the game with it inside the game, which is so,
- 23:49Speaker 1: so fun to me. We had this guy, Russ Ortiz
- 23:52Speaker 1: that I face in the nationals at the old park. When,
- 23:56Speaker 1: when I first got called up and he had one where, Like,
- 23:59Speaker 1: his body, if he stepped back fast and went really fast,
- 24:03Speaker 1: it was slow. And if he stepped back slow, it
- 24:06Speaker 1: was fast. So, like, his body language. And I hit
- 24:09Speaker 1: a ball on the upper deck there. I wasn't good
- 24:13Speaker 1: at the ones where you, like, had to look last
- 24:15Speaker 1: minute and then get ready.
- 24:16Speaker 2: But if it was that obvious.
- 24:18Speaker 1: Toe tap.
- 24:19Speaker 2: People tapping their toes. Some guy tapped their toe three
- 24:22Speaker 2: times on. and only two times on fastball. There's so
- 24:27Speaker 2: many different variables to look at.
- 24:29Speaker 1: There's some fun ones. All right. This next email is
- 24:32Speaker 1: from Zane Akbari. I'm visiting Tokyo and was at the
- 24:36Speaker 1: Giants-Bay Stars playoff game, and the atmosphere was outstanding. It
- 24:41Speaker 1: got me thinking about Japanese players when they come over
- 24:43Speaker 1: to MLB. What is the biggest adjustment that they have
- 24:47Speaker 1: coming over here since the crowds and atmosphere are similar
- 24:50Speaker 1: in Japan as they are here?
- 24:52Speaker 2: Guys.
- 24:53Speaker 1: We were on the number one team in the world,
- 24:55Speaker 1: so it only makes sense that we partner with the

- 25:45Speaker 1: We thank you, Blue Chew, for sponsoring the pod and
- 25:48Speaker 1: the bedrooms.
- 25:49Speaker 2: I mean, everything, adjusting to everything here. It's a completely
- 25:57Speaker 2: different culture in America as it is in Japan, starting
- 26:01Speaker 2: with our food, language, housing, driving, manners, cleanliness, right? Like
- 26:09Speaker 2: you name it, it's an adjustment. I mean, just think
- 26:11Speaker 2: about us going anywhere in the country and the adjustment
- 26:14Speaker 2: you have to make. So The biggest thing has to
- 26:17Speaker 2: be in the clubhouse. Because when you get to baseball,
- 26:19Speaker 2: it's baseball. It has to probably be how the schedule
- 26:24Speaker 2: is ran, like spring training schedule. Because in Japan, I mean,
- 26:27Speaker 2: they're grinding. They practice like crazy, right? So that and
- 26:33Speaker 2: then the language barrier. I mean, the language barrier has
- 26:36Speaker 2: to be hard. For pitchers, they're pitching every five days
- 26:40Speaker 2: instead of once a week. So that's a huge adjustment
- 26:43Speaker 2: for hitters. it's adjusting to different styles because the Japanese
- 26:47Speaker 2: style pitchers have their own kind of quirky style, you know,
- 26:50Speaker 2: how they, how they, I don't know. I just feel
- 26:53Speaker 2: like most Japanese guys have like a little pause or
- 26:56Speaker 2: hitch where here it's maybe a little more fluid. Yeah.
- 27:01Speaker 2: A lot of adjustments.
- 27:02Speaker 1: I was with Seiya when he first came over and
- 27:05Speaker 1: managing Seiya Suzuki for the Cubs. And the biggest, you
- 27:08Speaker 1: hit on it. First thing you said was the food.
- 27:10Speaker 1: I think one of the hardest thing for them to
- 27:12Speaker 1: adjust with is like, in the clubhouse and where they're
- 27:16Speaker 1: going to get their food from. They've got interpreters to
- 27:18Speaker 1: kind of help with that, that language barrier. But, um,
- 27:21Speaker 1: you know, he lost a little bit of weight early
- 27:23Speaker 1: on trying to just make, you know, find the stuff
- 27:25Speaker 1: that he liked to eat over here. So, um, good questions, Zane.
- 27:28Speaker 1: That was a really good question.
- 27:31Speaker 2: One more email from Javier Bennett's, I believe from Spain
- 27:36Speaker 2: with all the love and respect for you guys. Thank you.
- 27:39Speaker 2: Shout out to Spain. Massive shout out to the show.
- 27:43Speaker 2: You are putting together every week, every day now, Javier.
- 27:47Speaker 2: Huge fan. How would you develop pitching at an organizational level?
- 27:51Speaker 2: I feel like this is something as an organization we,
- 27:55Speaker 2: the Cubs, are not getting to the right place, especially
- 27:58Speaker 2: when looking at how teams like the Brewers and Rays
- 28:01Speaker 2: have developed their pitchers.
- 28:03Speaker 1: Ooh, good question.
- 28:05Speaker 2: Well, Javier, thankfully for you, you have a manager who,
- 28:10Speaker 2: ran an organization, and two former pitchers. So we can
- 28:15Speaker 2: easily comment on this one. Go ahead, Rossi.
- 28:19Speaker 1: You know, Javier, maybe I'm old school, but I go
- 28:23Speaker 1: back to everybody's trying to throw the ball as hard
- 28:26Speaker 1: as they possibly can, and velocity wins. It creates the
- 28:30Speaker 1: ability to get away with mistakes. But I don't think
- 28:34Speaker 1: we focus on in our bullpens, and if I'm talking
- 28:37Speaker 1: about developing pitchers and I'm talking about minor leagues pitching,
- 28:42Speaker 1: I would love to see a routine in a bullpen
- 28:44Speaker 1: where guys have to execute the fastball maybe two or
- 28:49Speaker 1: three times. Like, we're going to start down and away.
- 28:52Speaker 1: Here's what the good pitchers I caught with. We're going
- 28:55Speaker 1: to get loose. I'm going to get you down. I'm
- 28:57Speaker 1: going to get loose. And then I'm going to start
- 28:58Speaker 1: my routine. We're going to go three fastballs down and away,
- 29:03Speaker 1: which is glove side extension. And then whether you're righty
- 29:07Speaker 1: or lefty, and then we're going to go three fastballs
- 29:09Speaker 1: in and you don't move to the next spot until
- 29:12Speaker 1: you execute three in a row. So it just teach
- 29:15Speaker 1: you a little bit to, to kind of lock in
- 29:18Speaker 1: those mechanics of where that release point is on both sides.
- 29:21Speaker 1: And then we'll start spinning some, then we'll start elevating.
- 29:25Speaker 1: And then we'll start some change ups, stuff like that.
- 29:27Speaker 1: But I just think fastball command is so great. And
- 29:30Speaker 1: I'm probably, you know, if, There was a front office
- 29:33Speaker 1: listening to me talk. They'd probably blast me and saying
- 29:35Speaker 1: it doesn't matter and the race hit up middle and
- 29:37Speaker 1: they could do all the spin rate stuff and just...
- 29:39Speaker 1: just let it eat. But I think some of the
- 29:42Speaker 1: guys that don't make it to the big leagues with
- 29:44Speaker 1: velocity could really benefit. You're going to get more out
- 29:47Speaker 1: of your whole organization. I think if you have some
- 29:49Speaker 1: guys that can command the baseball and work on a routine,
- 29:53Speaker 1: at least trying to get some of those release point
- 29:55Speaker 1: and mechanics locked in, but. What do I know? I
- 29:58Speaker 1: only caught 15 years in the show.
- 29:59Speaker 2: I don't know. Well, I think, Rossi, from an organizational standpoint, right,
- 30:07Speaker 2: you get these guys in that are raw. You get
- 30:09Speaker 2: them in from college or high school that have stuff.
- 30:14Speaker 2: And being a professional organization, we have all the technology
- 30:18Speaker 2: at our forefront, which is amazing. I think, and this
- 30:22Speaker 2: is just the basics, like the biomechanics of it, unlocking
- 30:27Speaker 2: your hips, unlocking your torso, getting, figuring out where you're tight.
- 30:32Speaker 2: Like you hear Jacob Mizorowski talk about how he kind
- 30:35Speaker 2: of got more into his glutes more.
- 30:38Speaker 1: Right.
- 30:39Speaker 2: And he's producing one Oh five. Now he always threw hard,
- 30:42Speaker 2: but it's like Michael King used to say this all
- 30:45Speaker 2: the time in New York. Like there was a couple
- 30:47Speaker 2: of starts where he was 93, 94. And in between starts,
- 30:50Speaker 2: I'm talking, I was like, Oh no, I like, I
- 30:52Speaker 2: figured it out. I wasn't driving into my backside as
- 30:56Speaker 2: much or my legs as much. Next start, he was 97, 98.
- 31:00Speaker 2: So from an organizational standpoint, if you could identify people's
- 31:04Speaker 2: biomechanics in that aspect, the velocity will come. I mean,
- 31:09Speaker 2: you look at Cam Schlittler. When he first came into
- 31:11Speaker 2: the minor leagues, he was not throwing 98 to 100.
- 31:14Speaker 2: So the Yankees unlocked his potential.
- 31:16Speaker 1: I feel like in talking to Craig Breslow, to your point, Riz,
- 31:22Speaker 1: we can, he used to say, we can teach velocity.
- 31:25Speaker 1: We can't teach command as well. Basically, you know, we
- 31:28Speaker 1: can get guys to throw harder. It's, it's more difficult
- 31:31Speaker 1: for us to get guys to command the ball. So
- 31:33Speaker 1: that's what I would say, you know, draft, maybe guys
- 31:37Speaker 1: that command the ball and see if you can get
- 31:39Speaker 1: a little more out of them. But again, that's hard.
- 31:42Speaker 2: And the biggest thing too, for a young pitcher is
- 31:45Speaker 2: that watch the game, watch every single pitch. When I was, playing,
- 31:52Speaker 2: I watched every pitch, righty or lefty. And if I
- 31:56Speaker 2: missed a pitch, especially the first pitch, and especially on defense,
- 32:01Speaker 2: if a guy first pitch swings his first at bat,
- 32:03Speaker 2: if I got out my first at bat on the
- 32:07Speaker 2: first pitch, I probably 98% of the time unless it
- 32:11Speaker 2: was bases loaded one out or runner on third less
- 32:13Speaker 2: than two outs, was taking my second at bat. You
- 32:16Speaker 2: know what I mean? So there's so many times where
- 32:19Speaker 2: I watch like a guy will show me a pitch.
- 32:22Speaker 2: My second at bat that I'm taking, I'm like, why
- 32:23Speaker 2: would you show me that pitch? You just throw me
- 32:25Speaker 2: a fastball on the middle, right? Obviously sometimes you get
- 32:27Speaker 2: burned on that, but if you could watch the game
- 32:30Speaker 2: and have, just be a student of the game as
- 32:34Speaker 2: well in a competitor, because you have your scouting reports,
- 32:37Speaker 2: but then when the game gets going, you have to
- 32:39Speaker 2: make the adjustments. So I don't know how you teach that.
- 32:42Speaker 2: I mean, you just have to watch more, but.
- 32:45Speaker 1: Um, They got to listen to the pod. They got
- 32:47Speaker 1: to listen to the pod and get advice from us.
- 32:49Speaker 1: Because it's a lot different now than when I came up, obviously. Like,
- 32:53Speaker 1: you know, guys used to be sinking and cutting it
- 32:56Speaker 1: at 91, 92. Like, yeah, nobody in the big leagues
- 32:58Speaker 1: is hardly throwing 91, 92 anymore.
- 33:01Speaker 2: For example, when I was with the Red Sox, Rossi,
- 33:03Speaker 2: and this is just on the hitting side, which I'm
- 33:05Speaker 2: sure on the pitching side, they were doing something similar.
- 33:08Speaker 2: After every at-bat, we had a binder in our dugout.
- 33:11Speaker 2: And we had to go– write down the pitch sequence
- 33:15Speaker 2: that they threw to us and write notes on how
- 33:17Speaker 2: you felt.
- 33:18Speaker 1: Wow.
- 33:18Speaker 2: So it was all, it was awesome because it was like,
- 33:21Speaker 2: he threw me hard and then soft away. Hey, I
- 33:24Speaker 2: really saw his curve ball. Well, you don't have to
- 33:27Speaker 2: worry about that pitch. Like just stay on the fastball.
- 33:29Speaker 2: You'll react to the curve ball. So then a few,
- 33:31Speaker 2: you know, a few weeks later, a month later, when
- 33:33Speaker 2: you play that same team, you go back over those
- 33:36Speaker 2: notes and you're like, Oh, I saw that curve ball. Well, okay,
- 33:39Speaker 2: that's good. And then you, then you, verify it again
