- 0:08Speaker 1: This is me eat podcast coming at you shirtless, severely,
- 0:13Speaker 1: bug bitten and in my case, underwear listening podcast. You
- 0:18Speaker 1: can't predict anything presented by first, like creating proven versatile
- 0:24Speaker 1: hunting apparel from Marino bass layers to technical outerwear for
- 0:28Speaker 1: every hunt. First like go farther, stay longer. Okay, this
- 0:36Speaker 1: is a special UM love episode. It's like the love
- 0:43Speaker 1: boat from We're in Southeast Alaska at our at our family,
- 0:49Speaker 1: uh fish shack with a whole bunch of people, a
- 0:52Speaker 1: lot of people are familiar with and uh Seth has
- 0:55Speaker 1: tell everybody Seth's got big news. Went against my Um
- 0:58Speaker 1: went against my suggestion. No, I didn't to do it
- 1:02Speaker 1: at the waterfall. No, you had a couple of suggestions,
- 1:04Speaker 1: one of them being at the lake and woman being
- 1:07Speaker 1: at the waterfall. Tell what happened? Um, I proposed to
- 1:13Speaker 1: Kelsey and I said, yeah, so the wild he com
- 1:16Speaker 1: pulls the wildlife artist Kelsey Johnson. Is that fair? Wildlife
- 1:20Speaker 1: artists just artists, artists, painter Um, Yeah, Western artists. Your
- 1:25Speaker 1: Instagram things so they can look at yourself. U K
- 1:28Speaker 1: underscore ray artworks, but Ray is spelled weird r. They
- 1:32Speaker 1: do no one to know that if you've been listen,
- 1:35Speaker 1: if you've been running around your whole life telling people
- 1:37Speaker 1: K Ray they're not finding Yeah, there's a demographic of
- 1:40Speaker 1: people out there that have been looking for me this
- 1:41Speaker 1: whole time, and they think it's r a y. Yeah right,
- 1:45Speaker 1: but now that's tell everybody again. Um, k underscore Ray
- 1:50Speaker 1: r a e artworks with its western wildlife. Very yeah,
- 1:58Speaker 1: very beautiful stuff. And you have a you have a
- 2:00Speaker 1: piece that you're donating to our we haven't launched yet,
- 2:04Speaker 1: but are auction house of Oddities. Do oil painting of
- 2:07Speaker 1: a big horn ram kind of portrait style that'll be
- 2:10Speaker 1: in there. You should go check out her work and
- 2:12Speaker 1: buy something. Anyways, you said yes, cried ugly cried? What
- 2:19Speaker 1: three years? It was three years? What I told Seth
- 2:22Speaker 1: to do? What we kicked around a handful of things.
- 2:23Speaker 1: He wasn't gonna stick the ring. Explain that ring again. Um,
- 2:27Speaker 1: it's a white buffalo, which is like a people aren't
- 2:30Speaker 1: familiar with, like a white turquoise looking stone, which is
- 2:33Speaker 1: my favorite. Um, and it's three rings. It's surrounded by
- 2:37Speaker 1: a setting made by a dorn smith in Cooe Emerson Graves,
- 2:42Speaker 1: just my favorite jeweler. Um, it's really pretty, one of
- 2:46Speaker 1: a kind, custom made, custom made. You know a lot
- 2:50Speaker 1: of people when you're getting married, he'll come out and
- 2:52Speaker 1: they'll play that here comes a bride. You should be
- 2:54Speaker 1: playing great white Buffalo. Nugent's great white buffalo. Like it
- 2:59Speaker 1: all that ring, pumping that ring in there. Uh. Seth
- 3:03Speaker 1: was thinking about putting on putting that ring into a
- 3:06Speaker 1: helimet stomach for a link cod stomach and then having
- 3:09Speaker 1: you there and gutting it and then being like he's
- 3:11Speaker 1: gonna be like, let's see what it ate? Yea, what
- 3:15Speaker 1: do we have here? Well? Well, well, or I told
- 3:18Speaker 1: him take you up to the waterfall and have that
- 3:21Speaker 1: ring just setting in the gravel there. Sounds dangerous. And
- 3:25Speaker 1: then he'd come up and be like, well look that
- 3:27Speaker 1: little shiny little nugget. Yeah. We yeah, we threw around
- 3:32Speaker 1: a bunch of ideas, but you took her up to
- 3:34Speaker 1: the lake. Took her up to the lake. It was
- 3:36Speaker 1: pouring rain. We paddled across the cove on on in
- 3:42Speaker 1: the canoe and chatting. Danielle came with us. Danielle is
- 3:46Speaker 1: a wedding photographer. So you're hitting the bushes, she hitting
- 3:49Speaker 1: the bushes. The timing on This is pretty amazing because um, uh, Jester,
- 3:56Speaker 1: I understand the right at the moment. Uh, you found
- 4:00Speaker 1: an old boat and under that boat was a fishing rod,
- 4:03Speaker 1: and so he decided to take a poke. There are
- 4:05Speaker 1: two of them, Yeah, And I knew they were going
- 4:07Speaker 1: to propose. He was going to propose. You were getting bored.
- 4:13Speaker 1: He's like, all right, buddy, let's let's get on with this.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Chester pulled a Chester move and he took a cast
- 4:19Speaker 1: right at that moment, made a cast and went and
- 4:22Speaker 1: I look over and seth is on one knee and
- 4:26Speaker 1: I quick reel then and ran over. Why the group deal?
- 4:31Speaker 1: Most people do it privately? No, they don't. They don't
- 4:34Speaker 1: do it privately. Do that like baseball stadiums? Yeah, I
- 4:38Speaker 1: saw a news story the other day about a dude
- 4:39Speaker 1: who got down on one knee in front of it,
- 4:41Speaker 1: got out on the stadium. You see this. It's horrible. Uh.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Somehow he gets his girlfriend or whatever out on the
- 4:51Speaker 1: like the pitcher's mound or something like, out in front
- 4:53Speaker 1: of the whole damn, what do you call it? At
- 4:56Speaker 1: a baseball game stadium stadium? And there's all these cell
- 5:01Speaker 1: phone videos of it. He gets down on one knee.
- 5:04Speaker 1: She puts her hands over her face and runs away.
- 5:08Speaker 1: I can't do that here because she was not not
- 5:11Speaker 1: because she was nervous. She didn't want to marry that.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Ye see, I I trapped her. She had nowhere to go,
- 5:16Speaker 1: she said, no, She's like she's in an awkward spot. Guy.
- 5:23Speaker 1: I seth boy, he was gonna do if you said no,
- 5:25Speaker 1: and then here, you too are stuck up here. He said,
- 5:27Speaker 1: he's just gonna fish. Yeah, which is what you did anyway.
- 5:31Speaker 1: So it's like kind of the same plan would being
- 5:35Speaker 1: the exact same plan. No. I asked him about a
- 5:39Speaker 1: hundred times if he was serious. That was my reaction.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Why do you want to be married to cecil Man?
- 5:44Speaker 1: Love him? Love? Guy? Uh? Oh? Why more stuff about love? Though?
- 5:53Speaker 1: I don't know if I can talk about this, I'll
- 5:54Speaker 1: just talk about it. She gets Maddy. She was mad.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Do you remember Taylor thorn Right? She taught me and
- 5:58Speaker 1: Janni how to do the Were you there cal and
- 6:01Speaker 1: we did the three guns? You know you were out
- 6:03Speaker 1: of town or something like that. I didn't built at
- 6:07Speaker 1: the last minute, m Ammo shortage. Uh Taylor thorn tooss
- 6:12Speaker 1: to do the three gun video or toss do three
- 6:14Speaker 1: gun and we made a video. Like bazillion people watched
- 6:17Speaker 1: the video us doing a three gun thing, including some
- 6:20Speaker 1: fireman who took a shine to her. And they just eloped.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Really and she said that, um, in some ways she
- 6:28Speaker 1: has to give us credit. Huh, well that's great, she said.
- 6:32Speaker 1: She does stuff fast, shoots fast, gets married fast. It
- 6:36Speaker 1: wasn't that wasn't that long ago when you guys did that, right,
- 6:38Speaker 1: they eloped by credit? She means the dowry that fireman
- 6:42Speaker 1: owes us chunk, just a little little chuck of his pension,
- 6:47Speaker 1: chunk of pension something. Oh there the thing so yeah,
- 6:51Speaker 1: the cabinet, the Shack of Love. Hm ah. I don't
- 6:57Speaker 1: know if you want to get the details there, Andy, No,
- 7:01Speaker 1: probably not what you have been on the showing forever.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Andrew chef Andrew Radlowski comes up at the i P
- 7:12Speaker 1: of the weekend. He may or may not have gotten
- 7:16Speaker 1: lucky at the shack once many many years ago, decades ago. Uh,
- 7:23Speaker 1: my brother Danny got married here. Uh my brother Matt
- 7:28Speaker 1: realized he had to break up with one of his
- 7:29Speaker 1: girlfriends up here, She says, offsets the love vibe. I
- 7:32Speaker 1: was telling Matt my plan for up here, and he
- 7:35Speaker 1: went on to tell me all about the times he
- 7:38Speaker 1: broke up with women and had bad things with women
- 7:41Speaker 1: happened to him up here. His current wife doesn't come
- 7:44Speaker 1: up here, his only wife, not his current wife, the
- 7:47Speaker 1: only one he's ever been married to that summer, I
- 7:51Speaker 1: don't know. And right there, like twenty ft away from here,
- 7:53Speaker 1: we decided the year my brother Danny got married, me
- 7:58Speaker 1: and my wife standing right there next to the boat.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Uh decided to try having a baby right next to
- 8:05Speaker 1: the boat, right there, No, like you know what it
- 8:07Speaker 1: came to, the decision on the rocks next to came
- 8:12Speaker 1: to the decision was the tide going out or coming in? Yeah,
- 8:15Speaker 1: I can't remember. I could probably look back at the
- 8:18Speaker 1: photography and look at the rocks and stuff and try
- 8:20Speaker 1: to tell if they looked like it was coming or going.
- 8:22Speaker 1: I think Andrew Chef Andrew Ragelowski's cooking prowess is something
- 8:28Speaker 1: to note, but it goes far beyond just coming up
- 8:31Speaker 1: here to the shack and cook guys out there marking
- 8:34Speaker 1: halibut spots. He's got a jigging stroke that strike fear
- 8:39Speaker 1: any halibut out there. Squares off to his fishing pole.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Knows his crabbing stick. Um any more you want to
- 8:50Speaker 1: say about yourself, current situation or anything things new since
- 8:53Speaker 1: you've been on Andy, Well, yeah it's been a little
- 8:56Speaker 1: bit um still plug it away, glad to be here,
- 8:59Speaker 1: you know, Well, I mean on the love. No, let's
- 9:01Speaker 1: at least say like the only person I have ever
- 9:05Speaker 1: met that has taken a Pulaski and carved a trail
- 9:10Speaker 1: between between his lady friend's house and his own. He's
- 9:13Speaker 1: so in love that they moved into houses next to
- 9:15Speaker 1: each other. Correct, keeps it, keeps it fresh. You know
- 9:20Speaker 1: that we don't gotta worry about When you see something
- 9:22Speaker 1: laying on the floor, you just know it's yours. You know,
- 9:24Speaker 1: you think it's their third thing. Oh where we're sitting
- 9:27Speaker 1: right now? So we're on Prince Wales Island. And this
- 9:30Speaker 1: is interesting because this is a long this is a
- 9:33Speaker 1: long burning debate. We're on Prince Wales Island right now.
- 9:36Speaker 1: So if you if you're from the town to ketch
- 9:39Speaker 1: A Can and went due west out of ketch A
- 9:41Speaker 1: can um catch cans on Ravilla Island and you went
- 9:46Speaker 1: due west of there, you'd wind up out at Prince
- 9:48Speaker 1: Wales Island. If you went east to catch can you
- 9:50Speaker 1: wind up kind of the in the panhandler, the like
- 9:53Speaker 1: the sorry not the panel, you wind up in British Columbia.
- 9:55Speaker 1: So we're down in that neck of the woods, southeast Alaska.
- 9:59Speaker 1: The is out here have there's a wolf, the wolves
- 10:02Speaker 1: of out here. Some people will just say they're regular wolves.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Some people say they're a special wolf called the Alexander
- 10:08Speaker 1: Archipelago wolf, and they are edging closer to Endangered Species
- 10:14Speaker 1: Act protection. And it's been a contentious thing because you
- 10:19Speaker 1: have wolves, a very healthy population of wolves. There aren't
- 10:25Speaker 1: on this island twenty miles from here. Do you do
- 10:29Speaker 1: they get to be separate? Like do they get to
- 10:32Speaker 1: be regarded as their own thing? Because they're archipelago wolves.
- 10:36Speaker 1: They're they're they're defining features. They a lot of salmon,
- 10:39Speaker 1: and uh yeah, defining features and then defining habits that
- 10:45Speaker 1: would separate them from mainland wolves. Put it simply, Uh,
- 10:52Speaker 1: my brother, who's my brother, Danny, who's a biologist in Alaska,
- 10:55Speaker 1: not referring to this, but he said, of taxonomy, he said,
- 10:59Speaker 1: you have your lumbers, and you have your splitters, and
- 11:02Speaker 1: they know who they are. Um splitting like this in
- 11:08Speaker 1: this case splitting, in this case saying like, hey, these
- 11:10Speaker 1: are different wolf splitting is always splitting is often used
- 11:16Speaker 1: as an environmental tool in the old toolbox for environmental
- 11:22Speaker 1: battles right where if you can point to anything and
- 11:27Speaker 1: say that and make an argument that it's endemic or separate,
- 11:31Speaker 1: you can usually get protections for landscapes. And you'll find
- 11:34Speaker 1: the industry is usually trying to be like, nothing different
- 11:36Speaker 1: about that wolf, same old wolf. As a bunch of
- 11:38Speaker 1: them over here, who cares about those ones? It's like
- 11:40Speaker 1: an ongoing There might be cases where industry wants to separate.
- 11:45Speaker 1: By generally, industry and commercial interests like to lump and
- 11:49Speaker 1: they want to be like, as long as there's a
- 11:51Speaker 1: bunch of wolves somewhere, who cares? And I imagine out
- 11:57Speaker 1: here this archipelago region, the issue would be uh habitat
- 12:02Speaker 1: destruction like timber timber harvest, I would imagine would be
- 12:06Speaker 1: the number one thing. I cannot imagine anybody's saying like
- 12:12Speaker 1: all the wolves come in here and eat all the
- 12:14Speaker 1: salmon um and there's no real dance like livestock type
- 12:21Speaker 1: of agriculture for conflict, which is kind of like the
- 12:24Speaker 1: main the main conflict is the main human conflict is
- 12:28Speaker 1: competition for deer. Yeah, so they did, uh, you know
- 12:33Speaker 1: they have around here, they have various seasons, and they
- 12:37Speaker 1: loosened the wolf hunting season, and uh, people got a
- 12:40Speaker 1: lot of wolves recently. Kind of shocked people how quickly
- 12:43Speaker 1: they got so many wolves, which made people think there's
- 12:45Speaker 1: more wolves than typical. But anyways, this has been a
- 12:48Speaker 1: long simmering thing. But yeah, if you have an island
- 12:51Speaker 1: in the Islands ten miles away from another island, and
- 12:54Speaker 1: that islands ten miles away from the mainland or whatever,
- 12:56Speaker 1: the hell, is it fair to say that the things
- 12:58Speaker 1: that live there are their own species? Have these wolves
- 13:03Speaker 1: always been on the island forever? Swam out here? How
- 13:08Speaker 1: well they got here? Yeah? You know interesting? Do you
- 13:12Speaker 1: know what people used to There used to be a
- 13:14Speaker 1: theory about human migrations that that humans crossed the first humans,
- 13:23Speaker 1: the first Americans, crossed the baring Land Bridge and then
- 13:26Speaker 1: then approached what's now the Lower forty eight through the
- 13:29Speaker 1: mid continent. They used to have this idea that there
- 13:31Speaker 1: was an ice free corridor and the humans must have
- 13:35Speaker 1: emerged down to the great plains like South Edmonton, Alberta.
- 13:39Speaker 1: And that was like the hot idea for a long time,
- 13:43Speaker 1: the currently fashionable ideas that people cross the baring Land
- 13:46Speaker 1: Bridge and then island hopped in boats down because people
- 13:53Speaker 1: now that we know how long ago people arrived in
- 13:56Speaker 1: the New World, the ice freak corridor thing doesn't make sense.
- 14:00Speaker 1: Like they were there. They were down in like Chili,
- 14:05Speaker 1: earlier than there would have been a ice free route,
- 14:08Speaker 1: so they must have come down the coast. And there's
- 14:12Speaker 1: a lot of interest in these islands around here, meaning
- 14:15Speaker 1: that you might find it's plausible that the oldest New
- 14:20Speaker 1: World human occupation sites are on these islands, even though
- 14:27Speaker 1: the shoreline that they were inhabiting is underwater by a lot,
- 14:33Speaker 1: you know, it's a couple h ft underwater, but that
- 14:36Speaker 1: what would have been mountaintops then or mountaintops now, and
- 14:39Speaker 1: that you might find very old There could be like
- 14:41Speaker 1: somewhere around here, very very old sites from like the
- 14:44Speaker 1: real first It would be hard to find though everything
- 14:49Speaker 1: just governed it is, but like tie you back to
- 14:53Speaker 1: the wolves right where humans who leave things behind that
- 14:57Speaker 1: that you can find other than just bones, you know,
- 15:02Speaker 1: stone points, maybe smart work, maybe some structures here and there.
- 15:08Speaker 1: And we still don't know how the hell they exactly
- 15:11Speaker 1: ended up where they ended up, and then you have
- 15:14Speaker 1: wolves that don't leave around the extra stuff. It's it
- 15:17Speaker 1: would just be bones um it. It's kind of like
- 15:22Speaker 1: we learned so much new every year, it seems about
- 15:26Speaker 1: how things get around. It's like, is this archipelago wolf
- 15:30Speaker 1: really different just because we don't know for sure how
- 15:34Speaker 1: it got from point A to point B m hm.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Is kind of the argument that that pops up to me.
- 15:40Speaker 1: I mean, we know, like how far Alaskan brown bears
- 15:44Speaker 1: swim from. They'll swim to islands that they you cannot see,
- 15:49Speaker 1: um jeez, and you know it's off of like a
- 15:52Speaker 1: scent more than likely. But it blew people's minds when
- 15:58Speaker 1: radio collar came out and they're like, oh, we had
- 16:02Speaker 1: a bear swim from this island to this island. I
- 16:04Speaker 1: didn't think that was possible. Well back to that wool thing.
- 16:09Speaker 1: So this is primarily being brought by petition from the
- 16:12Speaker 1: Center for Biological Diversity and defenders of wildlife who don't
- 16:17Speaker 1: self identify as anti hunting organizations. But my god, you'd
- 16:21Speaker 1: get the impression they're they're tied into a lot of
- 16:25Speaker 1: a lot of stuff that would I think conservation minded
- 16:30Speaker 1: hunters would enjoy and a lot of things that conservation
- 16:33Speaker 1: hunt minded hunters would not like. You know how this
- 16:37Speaker 1: is like the shack of love. Man, did I get
- 16:40Speaker 1: a big fight out here one time with one of
- 16:44Speaker 1: our co owners, with Dan Bulgan. Me and him got
- 16:46Speaker 1: a huge fight when I said that when I was
- 16:49Speaker 1: describing the Centers for Biological Diversity as an anti hunting organization.
- 16:54Speaker 1: He got pissed because you can rattle off some good stuff. Yeah,
- 17:00Speaker 1: got pissed, all riled up, good guy. Um, okay, Ca'll
- 17:06Speaker 1: explain the Senator Heinrich emailed me about this. They're getting
- 17:10Speaker 1: closer explaining recovering America's Wildlife Act, which is getting close. Okay,
- 17:16Speaker 1: So Recovering America's Wildlife Act or RAWA is a big package.
- 17:24Speaker 1: The what this kicked off at least four or five
- 17:31Speaker 1: years ago, big chunk work done under the Trump administration.
- 17:36Speaker 1: And basically it is a bunch of federal funding for
- 17:43Speaker 1: state wildlife and given state wildlife managers the tools they
- 17:50Speaker 1: need UH and tribal wildlife managers the tools they need
- 17:54Speaker 1: to protect sensitive species every state. Um. The tribes were
- 18:01Speaker 1: asked to come up with species of concern and that
- 18:05Speaker 1: that could be plants, pollinators, to mammals. In total, twelve
- 18:10Speaker 1: thousand species, twelve thousand species, and there's a lot of
- 18:15Speaker 1: back and forth on like what should make the list,
- 18:18Speaker 1: but basically states were asked to like give me your
- 18:20Speaker 1: top ten, like give me the most important UM and
- 18:26Speaker 1: all of a sudden we have the opportunity to try
- 18:29Speaker 1: to get this thing past. It's seen a lot of
- 18:33Speaker 1: bipartisan support. We need everyone to contact they're duly elected
- 18:41Speaker 1: representatives and and uh tell them to get on board.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Ideally co sign on UM recovering America's Wildlife Act because
- 18:53Speaker 1: if we act fast prior to the end August here,
- 18:59Speaker 1: which is a current session, this could get incorporated and
- 19:05Speaker 1: and voted on as part of the big infrastructure package,
- 19:10Speaker 1: which would be lightning fast and and fantastic. One super
- 19:16Speaker 1: encouraging thing is a Senator Blunt out of Missouri. Missouri,
- 19:20Speaker 1: if folks don't know, is like they have a wildlife
- 19:23Speaker 1: program in that state. That's like the envy of every
- 19:26Speaker 1: single state because when you register your car like car
- 19:30Speaker 1: like driver, your license plate, right, it's like every chunk
- 19:34Speaker 1: of it's like a point eight eight, it's like an
- 19:39Speaker 1: eighth of a cent for goes directly to wildlife of
- 19:43Speaker 1: all like state associated sales tax. It's all sales tax
- 19:48Speaker 1: because he wants to be in a huge amount of money,
- 19:50Speaker 1: and it'll I mean, it allows that agency to do
- 19:54Speaker 1: all the things that all states want to do, like
- 19:57Speaker 1: all the educational outreach the Missouri Conservation Magazine goes out
- 20:02Speaker 1: to like everybody, and every couple of years, some greedy
- 20:07Speaker 1: state politician wants to reach into that bucket and take
- 20:10Speaker 1: money out of it for some other program, and the public,
- 20:14Speaker 1: the citizens of Missouri always smack it down. It's really
- 20:18Speaker 1: cool to see um but you know, it's kind of
- 20:20Speaker 1: like a Pittman Robertson type of deal where it's like
- 20:23Speaker 1: if you brought it up today, would probably no way
- 20:25Speaker 1: it would pass. But since it got put in place,
- 20:28Speaker 1: people are really proud of it, and the um UH
- 20:34Speaker 1: Wildlife Agency in Missouri does a does a great great
- 20:39Speaker 1: job over there. So any funny the things that we're
- 20:43Speaker 1: so proud of that would we would never pad that
- 20:46Speaker 1: are overwhelmingly popular today, that would not have a prayer
- 20:50Speaker 1: to pass today. Wilderness Act which had like vote in
- 20:58Speaker 1: the Senate, you couldn't get that thing passed now. But
- 21:00Speaker 1: everybody's so like, oh, good, good, gracious, we did the
- 21:03Speaker 1: Wilderness Act. You ever get it? Because it's it's not
- 21:06Speaker 1: about the act itself, it's about what people can. Okay, Well,
- 21:09Speaker 1: if I vote for this act that everybody knows is
- 21:12Speaker 1: a good idea, then I get something right and it
- 21:15Speaker 1: gets bogged down in the in the in the bs.
- 21:17Speaker 1: But um, so yeah, almost a billion dollars for tribes. Um.
- 21:23Speaker 1: Every state has input and it really is supposed to
- 21:28Speaker 1: be giving the tools to the states that they need
- 21:32Speaker 1: to manage the wildlife. Um has a lot of bipartisan support,
- 21:37Speaker 1: but we need need a lot more, folks. One point
- 21:40Speaker 1: three billion and dedicated annual funding for proactive on the
- 21:44Speaker 1: ground efforts across the country point five million annually. Two
- 21:49Speaker 1: tribal nations. Mhm uh. This version introduced by Roy Blunt
- 21:57Speaker 1: from Missouri Senators Roy Blunt Missouri and Martin Hunder from
- 22:01Speaker 1: New Mexico. Martin comes on the show off and to
- 22:03Speaker 1: explain various things passionate gay. Yeah, um so yeah, really
- 22:10Speaker 1: really good deal. You know, we got a lot of
- 22:12Speaker 1: good stuff passed into the Trump administration by uh folks,
- 22:17Speaker 1: you know, right and in and and and playing the
- 22:20Speaker 1: game you know, contact and you're you're duly elected, and
- 22:23Speaker 1: we need to make sure it gets done under the
- 22:25Speaker 1: Biden administration as well. And a lot of this stuff
- 22:27Speaker 1: got got built under the UH during the Trump years.
- 22:31Speaker 1: So if you remember, we had with Fosburgh, the president
- 22:35Speaker 1: CEO of Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership on and he was
- 22:38Speaker 1: saying that, uh, paradoxically, you like that used that word,
- 22:45Speaker 1: I like how your lips are kind of swollen up
- 22:47Speaker 1: from their chapter from Jellyfish Bites. Paradoxically, when there is
- 22:55Speaker 1: a lot of discord and discontent and fractious argue in
- 23:00Speaker 1: d C is a good time to come in and
- 23:04Speaker 1: get conservation work done because they can't get anything done.
- 23:08Speaker 1: All the contentious ship they can't get taken care of
- 23:10Speaker 1: and everybody and and so they're looking to be like
- 23:12Speaker 1: how we're doing something, Yes, exactly, And when it was
- 23:15Speaker 1: a good conservation bill that has a lot of bipartisan support,
- 23:19Speaker 1: the envirals like it, hunters and anglers like it. The
- 23:23Speaker 1: lets some sign stuff and do stuff, do feel good
- 23:25Speaker 1: stuff because if not everybody sitting back being like what
- 23:29Speaker 1: what do you people doing? That's that's the deal. It's
- 23:32Speaker 1: like you know, you're they are your representatives, so you
- 23:37Speaker 1: you can always call in and be like, yeah, I
- 23:39Speaker 1: see you're not getting anything passed, like we've we voted
- 23:44Speaker 1: you in there for a reason. What's going on? Yes,
- 23:46Speaker 1: when they're all like fighting over the fighting over the
- 23:48Speaker 1: culture wars and who plays what sports and whatnot, and
- 23:52Speaker 1: they're all fighting about that, then they say do some
- 23:54Speaker 1: conservation for Yeah. Yeah, so this this is a this
- 23:57Speaker 1: is a good one. This is a good one. I've
- 23:59Speaker 1: already been doing some writing in and some some phone
- 24:02Speaker 1: calling and you've covered us on Cal's we can review
- 24:05Speaker 1: blow by blow I have, Yeah, I started and then
- 24:08Speaker 1: working on an article um for the Mediator dot com.
- 24:14Speaker 1: It's probably already out. Well, you know, did you come
- 24:16Speaker 1: up with that? I notice on your flame knife it
- 24:18Speaker 1: says cal and someone made it, say Kelly Ente you
- 24:22Speaker 1: is that your idea? That that was my idea? Solid man?
- 24:27Speaker 1: You know that means seth uh Espaniel, Yeah, I know,
- 24:32Speaker 1: but hot, Okay. That's a Casey Hawks original from first
- 24:39Speaker 1: Light Casey Hawks. Kelly and I love that. Uh oh,
- 24:43Speaker 1: you know nor interesting news item. We covered this Arizona,
- 24:47Speaker 1: which is the most trail cam and state on the
- 24:49Speaker 1: face of the planet recently, band trail cams for the
- 24:55Speaker 1: purpose of taking or aiding in the taking of wildlife,
- 24:58Speaker 1: or locating wildlife for the purpose of taking or aiding. Huh.
- 25:04Speaker 1: That's so. I feel like someone could do a quick
- 25:06Speaker 1: editorial pass on some of this not our stuff, lost stuff,
- 25:12Speaker 1: outlawing them, outlawing them quote for the purpose of taking
- 25:17Speaker 1: or aiding in the take of wildlife or locating wildlife
- 25:21Speaker 1: for the purpose of taking or aiding in the take
- 25:24Speaker 1: of wildlife. I like that not the same thing. Yeah,
- 25:27Speaker 1: I think what that boils down is you can have run. Meanwhile,
- 25:31Speaker 1: Wisconsin is uh stepping up on the trail camp game.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Wisconsin starting a thing called snapshot. They're d n R
- 25:41Speaker 1: So they're fishing Wildlife agency encouraging people to get the
- 25:45Speaker 1: trail cams out and then you make them online. And
- 25:48Speaker 1: it has to do with monitoring wildlife and creating a
- 25:51Speaker 1: resulting database for management decisions. It's a citizen monitoring citizen
- 25:59Speaker 1: monitoring wildlife project. It's citizens science. There are all sorts
- 26:04Speaker 1: of awesome. Um you know bird plant bug down to
- 26:10Speaker 1: you know constellation uh apps that you can get on
- 26:14Speaker 1: your phone, and folks have discovered species thought to be
- 26:20Speaker 1: extinct by you know, downloading these apps and being like, oh,
- 26:24Speaker 1: what what is this? I wrote about a guy and
- 26:26Speaker 1: I think Columbia who was going in to use the
- 26:30Speaker 1: toilet and a weasel came out of his toilet and
- 26:32Speaker 1: stood on it. Remember that it took a picture of it,
- 26:35Speaker 1: and it was like it was a reasonally thought he
- 26:37Speaker 1: had gone extinct. Yes, yeah, so you rediscovered a species
- 26:41Speaker 1: that they thought had been extinct, which is super cool. Um,
- 26:45Speaker 1: I always have your phone with you when you're going
- 26:46Speaker 1: to the john And then, uh, remember remember me and
- 26:50Speaker 1: the guy that got the big fight about Center for
- 26:52Speaker 1: Biological Diversity. Well, I had a trail camp stet up
- 26:56Speaker 1: on the trail up here and his uh wife used
- 27:02Speaker 1: the rest and used it, went to pee and he
- 27:05Speaker 1: pulled my card. Never got that card back. Uh. Anyway, Yeah,
- 27:11Speaker 1: these these cameras are fantastic tools. They're they're very inexpensive.
- 27:15Speaker 1: A lot of people have them for a lot of
- 27:16Speaker 1: reasons now, uh, and and they definitely can add add
- 27:21Speaker 1: to this. You can also like go and and we
- 27:24Speaker 1: saw like a lot of this come up during COVID
- 27:27Speaker 1: where people doing let's say, like a shark research but
- 27:31Speaker 1: don't have the funds to go out and do an actual, um,
- 27:37Speaker 1: you know, a self assessment of fish stocks shark stocks.
- 27:40Speaker 1: In this case, they actually like combed through. They got
- 27:44Speaker 1: like grad students combed through Twitter instead and like using
- 27:49Speaker 1: hashtags like pull up recent pictures and say like, well
- 27:54Speaker 1: through these ten thousand photos, taking the last x amount
- 27:58Speaker 1: of time from these, you know, geo tagged areas, like
- 28:03Speaker 1: this is what we have. You know, so um it
- 28:06Speaker 1: is it is valuable. Current thinks everyone from Arizona who's
- 28:10Speaker 1: bummed should move to Wisconsin. Or she's not here right now,
- 28:16Speaker 1: but I'm looking at what she wrote, or uh, if
- 28:20Speaker 1: you're in Arizona, you're bummed about this whole thing, going
- 28:25Speaker 1: explain to your people about this stuff. Yeah, and say like,
- 28:31Speaker 1: look at man, look at what we're missing out on.
- 28:32Speaker 1: I want to know Chef Ragilowski's take on moving a
- 28:37Speaker 1: bunch of Arizona folks up to Wisconsin and what that
- 28:40Speaker 1: would do to the palate up there. Yeah, that spice, Well,
- 28:46Speaker 1: chet would be a good one to talk to. Least,
- 28:48Speaker 1: that was concept data. But on a hard roll, hard roll, No,
- 28:55Speaker 1: they don't like spice in Wisconsin. Some people do, but
- 29:00Speaker 1: pretty cheese and sausage. Remember how we were covering off
- 29:03Speaker 1: on that whether that dude should be allowed to name
- 29:06Speaker 1: his kid. His last name is Fisher and he want
- 29:09Speaker 1: us to name it Hunter Fisher. Someone sent us in
- 29:12Speaker 1: a newspaper clipping about a guy named Hunter, last name
- 29:16Speaker 1: Hunter marrying a woman whose last name is Fisher. No
- 29:20Speaker 1: Tyler Fisher, Audre Hunter. Dude named Fisher marrying a woman
- 29:25Speaker 1: last name Hunter, and they made a little couzy to
- 29:31Speaker 1: like commemorate the wedding, says, part of your bass off
- 29:34Speaker 1: or get the buck out Fisher Hunter, Fisher Hunter. That's cute.
- 29:42Speaker 1: That's more stuff on love This. Yeah, it's the podcast.
- 29:46Speaker 1: I love that. Just seems like you're setting yourself up
- 29:50Speaker 1: for something that you gotta explain every single time somebody
- 29:52Speaker 1: sees it down the road, Like if you want that
- 29:54Speaker 1: little memento from your wedding, what, oh, you know the
- 29:59Speaker 1: Hunter Fisher in and people loved it at the time,
- 30:02Speaker 1: I swear, so I want to follow up and find
- 30:04Speaker 1: out she took his name or not. If I were her,
- 30:07Speaker 1: I would just combine and have kids name them Joe
- 30:13Speaker 1: Joe Fisher Hunter, No Joe Hunter Fish. I wish my
- 30:17Speaker 1: name was that, Like angler. Yea forager for fisher. Start
- 30:24Speaker 1: a little Instagram page. People your age. I thought you
- 30:27Speaker 1: guys think about all right? Speaking of love, um Chester,
- 30:34Speaker 1: we've had Chester on many times, Daniel, Yes, you have
- 30:39Speaker 1: tell me about how little fish you beating in your life? Well,
- 30:43Speaker 1: let's see, it's pretty ship up creek to them. And
- 30:49Speaker 1: who's the uncle? I can't give his name. I'm kidding.
- 30:52Speaker 1: It's my uncle Dale. And does he listened to the show?
- 30:56Speaker 1: Does you know about it? I don't know. But the
- 31:00Speaker 1: first time my eight fish was with him and I
- 31:01Speaker 1: was actually five and caught a salmon, cooked it up,
- 31:05Speaker 1: and but to give to give him a little salmon.
- 31:09Speaker 1: But this is when you were five years old. How
- 31:11Speaker 1: do you remember? I have a good memory. Never forget,
- 31:17Speaker 1: never forget to taste that's good. Anyway, it was not
- 31:21Speaker 1: a good taste. So when you're five, uncle Dale went
- 31:25Speaker 1: on a fishing trip. You don't know where you went.
- 31:26Speaker 1: I don't know nothing work in the river mouths. What
- 31:30Speaker 1: was he doing? I don't know. All I know is
- 31:33Speaker 1: he had a fish and I had to clear my
- 31:35Speaker 1: plate and I was for like growing up you had
- 31:37Speaker 1: a clear plate before you're sure man? Yep? So he
- 31:40Speaker 1: made me eat that whole thing, and I was like, clean,
- 31:43Speaker 1: clean plate. I was clean, clean, clean plate, Club Uncle
- 31:46Speaker 1: Dale salmon dish, and then took twenty years off. Well,
- 31:50Speaker 1: so yeah, I ended up not eating salmon again after that,
- 31:53Speaker 1: but I was I was also young. When you're like
- 31:55Speaker 1: a kid, you're so picky. Kids are so picky with
- 31:57Speaker 1: what they eat, So I could have just been like,
- 32:00Speaker 1: you know, I didn't like the taste. I don't know
- 32:01Speaker 1: what it was, but I just from then on I
- 32:03Speaker 1: was like, I'm not trying that again. Until it came
- 32:07Speaker 1: up here and had some vandy salmon. It was delicious,
- 32:09Speaker 1: but that also ruined you on the Yeah, it did.
- 32:13Speaker 1: I think I had this like persona of like everything
- 32:16Speaker 1: is going to taste fishy, and I didn't like. That's
- 32:18Speaker 1: the taste I didn't like was the fishy taste. So
- 32:21Speaker 1: but I've had fish sticks and I've tried, like, Wally,
- 32:28Speaker 1: you never wrote a Long John Silvers or anything like that.
- 32:31Speaker 1: This last night, I can't say that I've done that. Nope. Uh,
- 32:34Speaker 1: do you know there's a place called Long John Silver's.
- 32:36Speaker 1: Did not know that? And explain how you could explain
- 32:40Speaker 1: how you cooked the salmon in order to win. Oh
- 32:43Speaker 1: not quick question? Why did they call you? Don you know?
- 32:46Speaker 1: I got the nickname from a guy. It was that
- 32:50Speaker 1: we hung out with a lot of friend I don't
- 32:52Speaker 1: know how it's just more fun to say it's d
- 32:56Speaker 1: a h N. Really, it depends on, you know, the
- 33:03Speaker 1: mood of the situation and Dan. Back to the fish
- 33:07Speaker 1: thing though, Danielle's my wife and she doesn't give things
- 33:17Speaker 1: a good shot sometimes when it comes to game or fish.
- 33:21Speaker 1: But I feel like coming up here, I'm super proud
- 33:25Speaker 1: of you, so like giving it a shot? Is that
- 33:30Speaker 1: a sentence? I like it? Though I knew that was
- 33:36Speaker 1: actually coming up here. Winchester, you know, told me about
- 33:39Speaker 1: this opportunity. I was really excited for, like, just to
- 33:43Speaker 1: see everything out here and be out of my comfort
- 33:45Speaker 1: zone because at home, I didn't grow up in the
- 33:47Speaker 1: woods doing stuff. All I did was sports. Growing up.
- 33:50Speaker 1: My mom worked a lot, so I didn't go camping
- 33:53Speaker 1: every weekend. When you started working you're nine years old, yeah,
- 33:56Speaker 1: pretty much. My dad was never really in the picture,
- 33:58Speaker 1: so I kind of just been, um, you know, I
- 34:01Speaker 1: just worked and played sports, and that was my favorite
- 34:03Speaker 1: thing to do. I learned, I learned the you know
- 34:06Speaker 1: meaning of money at a young age, and if I
- 34:07Speaker 1: wanted something, I had to work for it. So if
- 34:10Speaker 1: I wanted a hundred Paradolargians in high school, I had
- 34:12Speaker 1: to pay for it. Which why did I do that?
- 34:17Speaker 1: But I mean, I guess I never grew up eating
- 34:20Speaker 1: this stuff. And Chester, as everyone knows, he's allergic to it.
- 34:23Speaker 1: We haven't covered off on that. Okay, Well he's my
- 34:26Speaker 1: My husband's an old fishing guy who could not eat fish,
- 34:29Speaker 1: and he's allergic to it, so we don't cook it
- 34:31Speaker 1: at home. He's been going gang bolsters on the shellfish.
- 34:35Speaker 1: He's been going. Next, So Andie, explain your salmon cooking.
- 34:47Speaker 1: So Andie lives on San Juan Island south of here.
- 34:51Speaker 1: But you guys eat all kinds of fish. Yeah, yeah,
- 34:53Speaker 1: it's rich and seafood over there. Um. But that Sam
- 34:56Speaker 1: and the other night actually had quite a bit of
- 34:58Speaker 1: a journey to get to to get to the dinner table.
- 35:02Speaker 1: We uh well, we got on silvers up at Frank's
- 35:05Speaker 1: and flayed them up, came back and uh oh, they
- 35:09Speaker 1: fired up the grill outside. Had all intentions to get
- 35:12Speaker 1: a nice little crispy skin on that on the on
- 35:16Speaker 1: the grill and as we threw it on with a
- 35:19Speaker 1: little propane malfunction, grill kind of went down to a
- 35:23Speaker 1: little whimper of a of a flame, so quick brought
- 35:26Speaker 1: it inside, threw it into hot pan, and then went
- 35:29Speaker 1: to finish it in the oven, and the pilotlight was
- 35:32Speaker 1: out in the oven, so we had a start back over.
- 35:36Speaker 1: But all said and done, by the time I got there,
- 35:39Speaker 1: I put a little honeymuster glaze on. It was actually
- 35:41Speaker 1: pretty dang good. It was absolutely yeah. We we overcame
- 35:46Speaker 1: the you like to do a skin side down? I well, actually,
- 35:51Speaker 1: if the girl no, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, not skin
- 35:55Speaker 1: if you have a ripping hot grill or what I
- 35:58Speaker 1: prefer what I have give say, cooking one on one,
- 36:00Speaker 1: Well I have. I have a couple of girls at
- 36:02Speaker 1: my house. But my favorite way to do is, I've
- 36:04Speaker 1: got a flat top girl, So a big cast iron,
- 36:07Speaker 1: you don't flat top and get that things smoking hot,
- 36:10Speaker 1: a little bit of oil and flesh side the season
- 36:13Speaker 1: you know, generously, and then flesh side down until that
- 36:17Speaker 1: thing just tells you when it's ready and just starts
- 36:19Speaker 1: to curl. And that cast irons, if it's seasoned right,
- 36:22Speaker 1: you just get up under there and flip flip the
- 36:24Speaker 1: whole fla over and it's just got that perfect little
- 36:26Speaker 1: crust on there, and then finish it with skin down.
- 36:29Speaker 1: You get a little bit of crisp on that skin
- 36:31Speaker 1: and it's money. And you can do that on a
- 36:34Speaker 1: on just a regular barbecue grill too, right, sure, sure
- 36:37Speaker 1: if if you're confident in your grill not sticking, you know,
- 36:41Speaker 1: it's it's all about the heat. If you can get
- 36:43Speaker 1: that heat high enough and you have a good season
- 36:45Speaker 1: season grill um surface, it shouldn't be a problem. But
- 36:50Speaker 1: in the same note, you can do that kind of
- 36:52Speaker 1: stuff in a cast iron pain inside. You know what
- 36:55Speaker 1: I was explaining about the flat top grill. The only
- 36:58Speaker 1: downfall is that is if you don't have a good
- 37:00Speaker 1: hood system, your house is sticking like fish for a
- 37:02Speaker 1: couple of days. Yeah that you know, if you're really
- 37:05Speaker 1: searing fish where it's like white hot with just that
- 37:09Speaker 1: oil starting to smoke, that's where you want it to
- 37:11Speaker 1: put that flesh side down. But then yeah, your house
- 37:14Speaker 1: is going to stick a little bit. My wife used
- 37:15Speaker 1: to get mad at me when the bath towels smelled
- 37:18Speaker 1: like fish. Yeah, you know, three days fish? Uh? Tell
- 37:24Speaker 1: us an I asked about cooking. Oh, talk about how
- 37:28Speaker 1: you fry fish. Well, there's a lot of just fish.
- 37:33Speaker 1: So I prefer breading posed to a battered dip. I mean,
- 37:37Speaker 1: batter dip is good for some applications, but I just
- 37:40Speaker 1: find it gets that some people get a little too
- 37:42Speaker 1: heavy with the batter. You've got a half inch battery
- 37:45Speaker 1: better breading, like when you get like traditional fish and chips,
- 37:50Speaker 1: that's usually a beer battery like that. But a lot
- 37:53Speaker 1: a lot of restaurants are home cooks do it where
- 37:55Speaker 1: there's just like a half inch thick breading before you
- 37:58Speaker 1: get to the fish, and but it's not cooked probably
- 38:01Speaker 1: and by the time it gets into the center, you
- 38:04Speaker 1: kind of have that soggy breading in there and it
- 38:06Speaker 1: just kind of MUSHes the fish out of Oh yeah,
- 38:07Speaker 1: you give that to your kids, and it winds up
- 38:09Speaker 1: being that they eat all that and then the middle
- 38:11Speaker 1: is like some little chunk of fish because they picked
- 38:13Speaker 1: all that garbage off the out side of it. So
- 38:15Speaker 1: I prefer to more of a a breading on there,
- 38:19Speaker 1: where I would take usually dry bread crumbs mixed with
- 38:22Speaker 1: a little bit of flour and some seasoning. Sometimes I
- 38:25Speaker 1: even throw a little bit of cornstarch in there because
- 38:28Speaker 1: or like a rice flower or something that's going to
- 38:30Speaker 1: give it that real nice Christmas. And I'll usually do
- 38:34Speaker 1: the three um into the flour into the eggwash and
- 38:39Speaker 1: then press it hard into the into the bread crumbs.
- 38:42Speaker 1: And the key that is is hot oil. You know,
- 38:45Speaker 1: if your oil temperature is too low three below three
- 38:50Speaker 1: fifty below, you're gonna get soggy fish? Do you aim? I?
- 38:54Speaker 1: Typically yeah, because your oil is gonna the temperature is
- 38:58Speaker 1: gonna plunge once you put all that old fish in there,
- 39:00Speaker 1: So you aim for three seventy five. Yeah. I always
- 39:02Speaker 1: got a little hot and then it comes down. And
- 39:04Speaker 1: then another trick is if you're doing rounds, let that
- 39:07Speaker 1: let the oil recouping that get back up to temp
- 39:09Speaker 1: because a lot of times you're rushing and you throw
- 39:11Speaker 1: it right back in there, but that oil is plummeted
- 39:12Speaker 1: so far down that everything's gonna get soggy in there.
- 39:16Speaker 1: For big groups like this, though, do you have, like
- 39:18Speaker 1: what's your trick when you're doing rounds, like multiple rounds
- 39:21Speaker 1: of fried fish? And this would be applicable at your
- 39:23Speaker 1: house too. Steve Um getting your first match and your
- 39:28Speaker 1: second match to like match up by the time it
- 39:32Speaker 1: hits the table in one round. Yeah, it's tricky. We're
- 39:34Speaker 1: running two friars the other night, which is nice. We
- 39:36Speaker 1: had actually electric fire that kind of you know, maintains
- 39:40Speaker 1: that temperature pretty well, and then we had and flirts
- 39:42Speaker 1: with like burning this whole place down, kind of flirtsh
- 39:46Speaker 1: with that. But I get, uh, I get a dutch
- 39:50Speaker 1: op in line up paper towels, take a load off,
- 39:55Speaker 1: dump it in there, and don't put lit on all
- 39:57Speaker 1: the way because I want steam to get away. That
- 40:00Speaker 1: keeps more and then you're just keeping that outside, you're
- 40:03Speaker 1: not throwing it back in the right next to that,
- 40:05Speaker 1: I think the other trick to good fried fish is well,
- 40:08Speaker 1: there's a couple of a couple of things. Is the
- 40:11Speaker 1: thickness that you cut it. And I've been working on
- 40:13Speaker 1: this for for the last couple of years, just really
- 40:15Speaker 1: trying to dial it in too thin, and that fish
- 40:18Speaker 1: is overdone by time your your breadings, I'm gonna get
- 40:22Speaker 1: that nice color on it, too thick and you're not
- 40:27Speaker 1: gonna achieve You're gonna still have a little raw fish
- 40:30Speaker 1: before that breading starts to get too dark. So it's
- 40:33Speaker 1: it's you gotta hit right in that sweet spot. Um.
- 40:38Speaker 1: You know I can see hits out the back of
- 40:40Speaker 1: my head when someone's got to hit on the rod,
- 40:43Speaker 1: even on other boats. Um sho, dud. It's like a curse. Man,
- 40:49Speaker 1: I see every hit. Did you see our heat? I could.
- 40:52Speaker 1: I could probably feel it. You can probably hear mine.
- 40:55Speaker 1: Oh yeah. Anyways, um, frying fish somehow like the sound,
- 41:03Speaker 1: like the vibe, like I just can tell when it's done. Oh,
- 41:05Speaker 1: you need all your senses today. When it's done, I
- 41:08Speaker 1: really do. It's it's something like the bubbling. Do you
- 41:12Speaker 1: know what I'm saying. That's the other trick is to
- 41:14Speaker 1: pull it. It's a it. You almost have to lead it, right,
- 41:17Speaker 1: You want to pull it? When you gotta lead it? Yeah,
- 41:20Speaker 1: you gotta think when you think it's still a little
- 41:24Speaker 1: bit raw, that's when you pull it and let it
- 41:26Speaker 1: sit for two minutes and then it's movements. Right. There
- 41:30Speaker 1: should be that nice translucent like flaky because it's not
- 41:34Speaker 1: the worst in overcooked fish. I was at a gun
- 41:39Speaker 1: range in Washington State one time. I got talking to
- 41:42Speaker 1: the dude next to me at the gun range, and
- 41:45Speaker 1: he learned where I was from, from Michigan and somehow
- 41:48Speaker 1: he felt basically that I was from Wisconsin. Um it
- 41:52Speaker 1: was telling me about when he lived in Wisconsin. Actually
- 41:56Speaker 1: from Yeah, you know, it didn't matter. It was very
- 41:58Speaker 1: much like the same region Wisconsin. N It's really if
- 42:03Speaker 1: you think someone's from Wisconsin, there's like an immediate like
- 42:07Speaker 1: bonding that you have. You're like, oh, you're from Wisconsin.
- 42:10Speaker 1: So I can see why that he was from Washington.
- 42:14Speaker 1: Oh really met me. I told him I'm from Michigan,
- 42:17Speaker 1: and he proceeded to talk to me, is from Wisconsin,
- 42:19Speaker 1: like in his head, just no difference. Yeah, right. Anyhow,
- 42:24Speaker 1: he was telling me how he almost he was in
- 42:26Speaker 1: the military. I can't remember what tell he was, but anyways,
- 42:28Speaker 1: met a girl, almost got married, but then changed his
- 42:33Speaker 1: mind to last minute, moved back to Washington, and he
- 42:36Speaker 1: said the defining part of the decision, as he said,
- 42:39Speaker 1: one night, I said to myself, do I really feel
- 42:42Speaker 1: like sitting around here eating fried fish every Friday? I
- 42:49Speaker 1: remember thinking, give me that lady's number. Well, we all
- 42:55Speaker 1: grew up the mid West. I mean that's uh, well
- 42:58Speaker 1: you myself a Chester, but that's that's a staple on
- 43:00Speaker 1: a Friday night. Love fried fish, man and people apologize
- 43:05Speaker 1: about it now, But I don't know why would you? Andy?
- 43:09Speaker 1: How did you do your sauce? The charter sauce was
- 43:12Speaker 1: so good? Oh yeah, that was just got What was that?
- 43:17Speaker 1: I threw some pickles in there. I think a little
- 43:20Speaker 1: trick to that is I always spill a little pickle
- 43:22Speaker 1: juice into the into the male and give it a
- 43:24Speaker 1: little thing. But that had some chopped up capers and
- 43:28Speaker 1: garlic and thinking man sauce. Yet you throw pickle juice
- 43:33Speaker 1: in there, Yeah, gives it that get a little lemon
- 43:36Speaker 1: juice too, kind of thins it down and it kind
- 43:39Speaker 1: of gives it that little little briany goodness. Mhm uh, Kelsey,
- 43:45Speaker 1: tell me your biggest, like biggest impression, Southeast Alaska impression.
- 43:50Speaker 1: Oh my god, the biggest three whatever? Faces looking better?
- 43:54Speaker 1: Thank you? Got a little puffy this morning? Yeah? You
- 43:58Speaker 1: thought I was all depressed this morning because I woke
- 44:00Speaker 1: up with a little congestion that I was crying about
- 44:04Speaker 1: my engagement if we'd broke it all right now, I've
- 44:11Speaker 1: just been here for five days and I'm puffy. Um,
- 44:15Speaker 1: this has been the best trip ever. I mean, it's like,
- 44:18Speaker 1: come on for me, never been to Alaska. I love
- 44:23Speaker 1: the scenery, the wildlife, fishing like just the experience. I
- 44:28Speaker 1: don't know if you want to call it an experience,
- 44:30Speaker 1: but um, but like got engaged, had all my friends here,
- 44:36Speaker 1: my dog. We had so much fun. Call your first
- 44:40Speaker 1: halibut caught my I mean caught my first halibut, caught
- 44:43Speaker 1: my first salmon, caught my first green ling, like kelt
- 44:47Speaker 1: green ling. What would you say your biggest strength and weakness?
- 44:53Speaker 1: Biggest strength and weaknesses as a helibut fisherman are the
- 44:56Speaker 1: weaknesses reeling for sure? Really and that sucker up. I'm like,
- 45:01Speaker 1: this is a hundred pounder, tough, get it up. I
- 45:04Speaker 1: don't know what was my biggest one pounds which is
- 45:07Speaker 1: so decent. We never weighed it, but it was tough
- 45:13Speaker 1: to get in the boat. Um, that's probably I don't know. Strength,
- 45:18Speaker 1: my napping skills, Yeah, that's important. Fill that real line
- 45:23Speaker 1: click losing to drag, drag the line over your between
- 45:27Speaker 1: your toes or something. Pretty much. Yeah, there's a good
- 45:31Speaker 1: picture of us all pretty much laid out in the
- 45:33Speaker 1: boat napping. I pulled up. You guys all perked up.
- 45:38Speaker 1: Oh we couldn't let me blacken. But you're generally you
- 45:43Speaker 1: generally enjoyed it. Oh, I enjoyed the hell out of it. Yeah,
- 45:45Speaker 1: it's a good time and the benefits will last. We
- 45:50Speaker 1: have a lot of fish. I spread the love. I
- 45:53Speaker 1: love food. So I'm going to be remembering this one
- 45:58Speaker 1: for a long time. So this means that Seth's slowed
- 46:01Speaker 1: down on wallete fishing, right, fish, That makes sense. Range
- 46:06Speaker 1: back there we were talking. We told you this morning,
- 46:10Speaker 1: we're up. You know, we've been here for five days
- 46:13Speaker 1: and we've just been fishing our ass off and it's
- 46:15Speaker 1: been amazing and we're going home today. But Chester and Seth,
- 46:20Speaker 1: you know, saying good night to everybody. Last night. The
- 46:23Speaker 1: last thing they said was Seth was like, hey, Jester,
- 46:26Speaker 1: do you want to go fishing on Sunday? Did they
- 46:32Speaker 1: make a little date? Oh? Yeah, they made a date already.
- 46:35Speaker 1: That's cute. Yeah, Because you guys have becoming tournament wallee fisherman.
- 46:39Speaker 1: Next year we're hitting the Montana circuit. We're gonna sponsor
- 46:44Speaker 1: you guys. Yep. We're going to try and do something
- 46:48Speaker 1: super cool with our winnings too when we take them all.
- 46:55Speaker 1: If we win. Yeah, you guys, to explain what you're
- 46:58Speaker 1: gonna do with all your with your winnings. We don't
- 47:00Speaker 1: really know yet. We're gonna consult with uncle col over
- 47:04Speaker 1: there because he's good with that kind of stuff. Conservation um.
- 47:09Speaker 1: We'd like to maybe do some fishing access um stuff.
- 47:14Speaker 1: Maybe some fish cleaning facilities. Yeah, we got we got
- 47:21Speaker 1: some access. Yeah for the lake that you if you
- 47:25Speaker 1: gave the purse money to the leading issue that the
- 47:30Speaker 1: lake you won, the person has around access enhancement, enhancement facilities,
- 47:38Speaker 1: improving a boat ramp, fish cleaning stations, whatever, porter potties,
- 47:43Speaker 1: who knows whatever. We'll figure out from someone who knows
- 47:48Speaker 1: what the what the area needs. We might not, we
- 47:50Speaker 1: might not win anything. That's a bad attitude. I'll tell
- 47:54Speaker 1: you what, buddy of mine, is there a ranger in
- 48:01Speaker 1: an area, pretty affluent area, and people are always looking
- 48:04Speaker 1: to make donations to get the trail heads up to
- 48:09Speaker 1: what they think is the shape they should be in
- 48:12Speaker 1: and things like that. Uh. But everybody wants like some
- 48:18Speaker 1: grand beautiful trailer or something with their name on it,
- 48:21Speaker 1: but really what they need are outhouses and nobody wants
- 48:25Speaker 1: their name on a shitter. So man, if you guys
- 48:29Speaker 1: thet you can take off on a on a tear
- 48:31Speaker 1: on the Walleye circuit and have a shitter named after
- 48:34Speaker 1: you had every boat, I'd be all, go take a Chester. Yeah,
- 48:43Speaker 1: I'd be down to donate a shitter. I'd probably use it.
- 48:50Speaker 1: But he he'd cut the line all the time. You
- 48:53Speaker 1: could work in that quality control is part of the deal. Yeah,
- 48:58Speaker 1: seth h move your biggest like like Southeast Alaska impressions.
- 49:01Speaker 1: I mean, you've been here before, but still I've been
- 49:03Speaker 1: here before. Um man. The I was just I was
- 49:10Speaker 1: hooked on the halibut fishing this time around last time.
- 49:14Speaker 1: It was just like cool to see everything, but um
- 49:17Speaker 1: especially because I struggled. I caught like one halbit the
- 49:20Speaker 1: first day and then when a couple of days struggling,
- 49:24Speaker 1: so that just made me want to we broke your
- 49:27Speaker 1: fishing reel? Yeah, I broke. I broke my fishing reel
- 49:30Speaker 1: on the first day, brand spanking new, brand spanking new,
- 49:35Speaker 1: and which made me struggle the rest of the trip
- 49:39Speaker 1: fishing with it broken reel. But um just man, everything
- 49:45Speaker 1: there's so much life up here, like everything that you
- 49:48Speaker 1: can do. We're out at Frank's trying to catch salmon,
- 49:51Speaker 1: and Chester discovered you could vertical jig spinners for for
- 49:56Speaker 1: flounder and and uh um sculpts. Makes you feel like
- 50:01Speaker 1: you're fishing wallete and you can look down, you can
- 50:05Speaker 1: like five five whatever fift however, you know, until you
- 50:10Speaker 1: can't see anymore. Yeah, just vertical jake and it looks
- 50:14Speaker 1: like nothing's down there, but all of a sudden you
- 50:16Speaker 1: put that spinner on the bottom and jig it up
- 50:19Speaker 1: and down a little bit and like these little flounder
- 50:21Speaker 1: just come out of nowhere. That was cool. All shrimp
- 50:26Speaker 1: crab bears everywhere, deer make running around. Out of all
- 50:32Speaker 1: the meteor trips we've ever done, this is still my favorite.
- 50:37Speaker 1: Like the meteor trip we did up here was my
- 50:39Speaker 1: favorite one out of everything. Yeah, I just like this area.
- 50:43Speaker 1: You know, there's all the we're largely surrounded by Tongas
- 50:47Speaker 1: National Forest, and there's always a lot of back and forth.
- 50:52Speaker 1: But right they were gonna do uh here a lot
- 50:56Speaker 1: about the Tongas rolled less rule m. Therove was debating
- 51:02Speaker 1: whether to cut a bunch of more road up here
- 51:04Speaker 1: to access more old growth September, and it seems like
- 51:08Speaker 1: that's gonna be off again, at least till the next
- 51:11Speaker 1: presidential election. Right, because what what was your like personal
- 51:15Speaker 1: experience with the effects of like some of the logging practices,
- 51:20Speaker 1: not necessarily like logging in general, but the logging practices
- 51:23Speaker 1: here out in your area. Well, historically there was effects
- 51:28Speaker 1: to the land and effects of the water, um they would.
- 51:34Speaker 1: So out here it's there's a lot of what's called
- 51:37Speaker 1: marine based logging where you're coming in on small islands
- 51:40Speaker 1: or in areas so there's no road system and it's
- 51:42Speaker 1: like you have to establish a beachhead, like they blasted
- 51:46Speaker 1: one in over not far from us four or five
- 51:49Speaker 1: years ago. That was on tribal land. Um. They still
- 51:53Speaker 1: they're quitting now. But the tribal corporations up here, so
- 51:57Speaker 1: see Alaska's a tribal corporation here that represents coastal tribes.
- 52:01Speaker 1: They own their very expansive land holdings, and they up
- 52:08Speaker 1: until very recently have been extremely aggressive around old growth
- 52:14Speaker 1: old growth logging, old growth rainforest logging. UM. And they
- 52:17Speaker 1: did a monster cut not far from us, and they're
- 52:20Speaker 1: wrapping that cut up earlier than expected. I guess they
- 52:23Speaker 1: weren't getting the yield off that they thought they would.
- 52:25Speaker 1: But they come in and dynamite in a landing and
- 52:31Speaker 1: then they're pulling all that timber out and they raft
- 52:35Speaker 1: the timber and yeah, they floated. They create these massive
- 52:40Speaker 1: I mean we're talking about many, you know, hundreds of
- 52:45Speaker 1: acres of raft logs when it's all said done. Uh.
- 52:49Speaker 1: The weirdest thing about that and these cuts up here
- 52:53Speaker 1: is a lot of that incentive. The log comes from
- 52:56Speaker 1: the death of the milltowns and that industry. This logging
- 53:02Speaker 1: project when they do it here, that stuff goes from
- 53:05Speaker 1: the woods into the water, It goes on barges, and
- 53:10Speaker 1: it is shipped in the round directly to Asia. It
- 53:13Speaker 1: never sets foot in an American town, no way. That
- 53:18Speaker 1: all goes in the round to Asia to be milled
- 53:21Speaker 1: in Asia. It goes on ships out there out to
- 53:25Speaker 1: the sea, not milled here. Yeah, they make ship with
- 53:29Speaker 1: it over there and then we bring it. So the
- 53:34Speaker 1: land effects are obvious and and they're not all negative. Right,
- 53:36Speaker 1: Like the clear cuts are amazing deer if you if
- 53:39Speaker 1: you like to hunt deer. Yeah, the fresh growth that
- 53:41Speaker 1: comes in there, because this is true rainforest. Right. So
- 53:45Speaker 1: like when you're sitting here and you look, I was
- 53:47Speaker 1: looking at like possibly some trees to cut, and then
- 53:50Speaker 1: trying to imagine what kind of headaches that would cause,
- 53:54Speaker 1: like you have this dark undergrowth that that is really open.
- 54:00Speaker 1: But if you were to cut trees out and allow
- 54:02Speaker 1: a lot more direct sunlight in, it's not like that
- 54:05Speaker 1: would just remain open with more sunlight. That would then
- 54:08Speaker 1: get a bunch of uh growth responding to that direct
- 54:12Speaker 1: sunlight like a jungle, and all of a sudden, the
- 54:14Speaker 1: kids wouldn't be able to run back and forth down there, right,
- 54:17Speaker 1: So you gotta think about that stuff. But that's it
- 54:21Speaker 1: gives a job to the kids, very clear that out. Yeah,
- 54:25Speaker 1: there's nothing worse than like, it's nothing worse than looking
- 54:27Speaker 1: at a fresh clear cut. To me, it's just ugly.
- 54:30Speaker 1: It's just I'm not even like I'm not even getting
- 54:34Speaker 1: into the I know, the economic stuff and all that.
- 54:37Speaker 1: Like it's jobs. Just saying like very personally, very subjectively,
- 54:43Speaker 1: to look at a clear cut of old growth hemlock
- 54:48Speaker 1: and cedar and sick of spruce is is ugly to me.
- 54:52Speaker 1: But man, you get that stuff a few years and
- 54:54Speaker 1: it loads up with deer uh and then and then
- 54:58Speaker 1: it kind of enters along like not very productive cycle.
- 55:01Speaker 1: In fact, when we first started coming up here, we
- 55:02Speaker 1: used to hunt a clear cut at the time was
- 55:05Speaker 1: like seven or eight years old, was spectacular. And then
- 55:07Speaker 1: now it's got to the point where it's just nothing.
- 55:10Speaker 1: It gets too high, too too high, too thick to hunt.
- 55:13Speaker 1: Uh so does that advantage. But one of the unforeseen things,
- 55:17Speaker 1: and when we had that clear cut coming in where
- 55:19Speaker 1: we're at now this is a big debate, is when
- 55:22Speaker 1: you raft those logs they shed their bark and there
- 55:27Speaker 1: was a cove near here, I mean very cold, you
- 55:30Speaker 1: can see it from here that they rafted lumbering when
- 55:33Speaker 1: they did the cut I was talking about. And it
- 55:37Speaker 1: turned that it's a large cove network. It is a
- 55:41Speaker 1: completely sterile environment. Now you used to be able to
- 55:46Speaker 1: crab it like nothing lives there, all the crab pots
- 55:52Speaker 1: in the world, and that cove, nothing lives there, and
- 55:55Speaker 1: it winds up being many many feet of bark that
- 56:00Speaker 1: just suffocates the sea floor. When they put the clear
- 56:03Speaker 1: cut in near here, they had to determine an area
- 56:06Speaker 1: where they can't remember what they determined, an area they
- 56:09Speaker 1: felt was nonsensitive um and some local people pushed back
- 56:13Speaker 1: on it. But in the end, uh they rafted logs
- 56:17Speaker 1: in an area they felt it was a viable place.
- 56:19Speaker 1: The raft logs and completely anecdotally, like completely anecdotally. UM.
- 56:26Speaker 1: And and take for Graham, I'm not here that much, right,
- 56:29Speaker 1: We're in and out over a month every year. UM.
- 56:34Speaker 1: I can't point to like we shrimped near there and stuff.
- 56:37Speaker 1: I can't point to any obvious impact from that. But
- 56:41Speaker 1: I don't know that it's not there. But they might
- 56:43Speaker 1: be more careful about the selection now. But it's a
- 56:45Speaker 1: strange process. And there's other thing to do here is
- 56:47Speaker 1: helicopter logging, um, which is great because then you just
- 56:50Speaker 1: select caught from a from a hunting perspective of anything
- 56:53Speaker 1: that does is when the helicopter log an area, Man,
- 56:55Speaker 1: you cannot get through it. It's tough navigating. It's horrible.
- 57:01Speaker 1: Steve dropped me off there one day and it's like,
- 57:03Speaker 1: oh yeah, just walk up here. It'll be some deer
- 57:05Speaker 1: in there. I think it just got logged. Should be
- 57:07Speaker 1: easy walking. And it's like you are crawling underneath trees
- 57:13Speaker 1: to then get up on top of trees to then
- 57:15Speaker 1: go underneath trees, and the topography is so broken you'd
- 57:19Speaker 1: be like climbing on some dead log and you jump
- 57:21Speaker 1: out into our dead log. And also you look down
- 57:23Speaker 1: you realize you're off the you're on like a soap
- 57:28Speaker 1: slippery log. You know that's like rotten, right, and you're like,
- 57:33Speaker 1: oh that that's not good. Nobody's gonna find me in
- 57:36Speaker 1: here ever. Yeah, this is my first time diving up here, um,
- 57:50Speaker 1: doing a little little snorkeling and free diving, and it's
- 57:58Speaker 1: absolutely mind blowing how much life there is when you're
- 58:02Speaker 1: looking just looking at the sea floor here like it is.
- 58:06Speaker 1: It is a living sea floor. It's not like sand
- 58:10Speaker 1: and in some turtle grass and the occasional crab. Every
- 58:14Speaker 1: it's like every square inch of the ground out here
- 58:17Speaker 1: in these bays is alive. Yeah, that's a good point.
- 58:20Speaker 1: You can put your hand down anywhere and you'd be
- 58:23Speaker 1: laying your hand on a living organism absolutely, not not
- 58:27Speaker 1: like silica, not just like sand or rock whatever you
- 58:29Speaker 1: put your hand down, it's like your hand is laying
- 58:31Speaker 1: on living organisms with without doubts, So that it would
- 58:36Speaker 1: be like another great example of Steve's like lumpers and
- 58:39Speaker 1: splitters thing, and like how uh the s A can
- 58:44Speaker 1: be used to protect areas. Um, you know, you you
- 58:49Speaker 1: could very well go in like if you really want
- 58:52Speaker 1: to do a survey of one of these bays that
- 58:54Speaker 1: they're going to potentially raft a bunch of logs. And
- 58:57Speaker 1: I'm sure you could go through there with the right
- 58:59Speaker 1: people and really cover it well and find some you know,
- 59:04Speaker 1: tiny sea star or something where you're like, oh, not
- 59:08Speaker 1: a lot of these left, yeah out here, but here
- 59:11Speaker 1: often you're dealing with in this area, you're often dealing
- 59:14Speaker 1: with sort of the most effective tool against environmental degradation
- 59:18Speaker 1: is the subsistence community. Um, And you it's very if
- 59:24Speaker 1: you're impacting subsistence hunters and fishermen who say that you know,
- 59:29Speaker 1: not say who's who's food and sustenance comes from those resources,
- 59:36Speaker 1: that is a that's a force to be reckoned with.
- 59:39Speaker 1: And and so for there it's like like you know,
- 59:41Speaker 1: they'll push like that shrimp ground, that's crab ground to
- 59:45Speaker 1: select stuff. But recently this corporation here, this tribal corporation
- 59:49Speaker 1: that owns most of the coastline here, Um, they're gonna
- 59:52Speaker 1: do a ninety there. They're gonna fade it out right
- 59:55Speaker 1: now and they're gonna take a year break from old
- 59:59Speaker 1: growth law sugging. Wow. Well, I wonder which is a
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: like major decision. Oh yeah, I mean it's it's an
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: entire lifetime of work off for a lot of people,
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: right hiatus No, I guess they'll reassess the ninety nine years. Incredible.
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: The thinking about the subsistence living up here too. It's
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: like the week at the fish Shack is like a
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: crash course in logistics. I'm like, you see those cup
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: of sugar, Where did this cup of sugar come from?
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: You know? Uh? And he's doing the the food spreadsheets
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: for this place, and you know, uh, you're talking this
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: morning about the kids grabbing random packs of oatmeal. Yeah, like, hey,
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: that's somebody's breakfast. Yeah, you just eight Thursday's breakfast on Tuesday. Yeah,
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: that's that's That's Actually one of my favorite parts of
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: this coming up here is the logistics of getting everything
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: out here and making it all work. It's it's it's
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: definitely has to be fairly fine tuned to make it
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: all work, or else you're you give stuff in a
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: little trouble. Well, it's so funny because we're not in
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: the middle of nowhere. Like really, if you zoomed out
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: a little bit, there are people everywhere. There's you know,
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: a commercial planes flying into a place not very far
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: from here, as the Coral flies, and it's still like
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: you got to really have your thinking cap on if
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: you're going to have your fuel, your groceries, you're all
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: your stuff dialed for a week, you know, yeah, yeah,
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: hardware stuff big time. I'm gonna skip ahead. I was
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: gonna I wanted to hit everybody's primary impression, but no, no,
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: I'm skipping ahead to me because you just brought up
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: one of the things I was gonna mention first. One
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: thing I like the most is the way when a
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: good hal of it shows up in town, he never
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: gets caught the first time. Like how bad at aiming
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: they are? Yeah, I mean we will be like bump
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: head a bump, bump heading on our bump. Someone else's
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: like just had a bump. Like you just imagine him
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: down there. Oh, he's going around to everybody and sometimes
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: five or six times before someone buttons into him. And like,
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: when one shows up, he's generally gonna get caught, you know,
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: when you start getting like and sometimes you'll you'll hit
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: three times before he gets himself hooked. It makes you
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: wonder how they get by. I was thinking, I would
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: love to just have like a bird's eye view of
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: what's going on ice fishing camera down because we're up
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: there for you know, some of these days we're up
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: there for eight hours and not knowing what's going on
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: down there, and then one shows up and like or
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: you're a you're just quiet and just see him over
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: and yeah, Andy, I think that was your biggest one,
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: right that you were so like had him on for
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: like three or four and then he got off and
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: you sent it back down and then you called him again. Yeah.
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: He I had him on for a minute and then
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: just like Steve was saying, then all of a sudden
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: he came back around and I was going to miss
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: that second time. Yeah, but the whole time you were
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: just cool as a cute cover. In our boat, the
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: late twenties boat, when we were something up, it was
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: just chaos. Sounded like childbirth going on. Look at me. Yeah,
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: we had Kelsey made this comment and uh we were like, okay,
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: like how much longer should we be here? Like, oh,
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: I'll give it twenty minutes. And I hear Kelsey go,
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: we've been here six hours, and I was like, we have,
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: but with that, who got the last minute fish? Oh yeah,
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: And nineteen minutes into that twenty minutes, I gotta fish.
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: It's calculated. Uh. The other impression I was gonna mention
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: that was based on the one you did is is annoying.
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: It's it's like, I have my three kids up here
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: right now. It's hard to have. I mean it's just hard.
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: It's like a lot of people to manage all their coals,
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: all wet, stealing, frustrate me, Like I want to strangle them.
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: But um I do like them too. I think it's
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: value for them to see, like what goes into utilities.
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: I mean, liked, do you get a bed, understanding of stuff,
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: how stuff functions, water, how to fix everything right, I'll
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: be all moldy and everything, be all wet, moldy all
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: the time. Your kids, I'm probably to get, like how
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: to get your feet? So they got trench foot man.
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: Those kids, they're out there in the pouring rain, play
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: in with like one didn't have a raincoat on. It's
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: just it's like cold and they're just going like nothing phases.
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: It's interesting. I don't know when people turned into babies,
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: but nothing phases. They went out there by themselves in
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: a canoe and came back with three fish, and we
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: were like, what was good? Yeah, yeah, they drive me nuts,
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: but I do like them to be exposed and stuff
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: because they got it. I mean, look at our normal house.
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: They got it. Gravy, gravy. Their mom like, oh, you
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: need their extra snack, you know, like just all the time. Man,
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: that's not what she sounds like, but you get what
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: I'm saying, like totally made. Yeah, and here it's like
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: you have to rash in those pretzels and you're not
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: gonna get anything. Life has just served them on like
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: a planet. I don't think Rosie liked our boat. She
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: went to Jimmy when we switched kids, and Jimmy was like, yeah.
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: She was telling me how many rules you guys have
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: on your boat because we're all like every time, like
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: it was, we get out there and about nine fifteen,
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: she's like, can I have a snack? And were like,
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: we have the whole day to save this this food.
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: And next next thing you know that it's open and
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: she's in there. You had the late twenties boat, but
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: all we have experience with is dogs, so we were like,
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: we're talking my dog to shut up. Alright, Chester, hit
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: me with your impression. Southeast Alaska in a nutshell. Oh
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: man in a chestnutshell. That's going to be difficult, but
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: first I just want to paint a picture. I'm like
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: sitting here next to my wife in a little tiny
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: shack and it's a shack. Yeah, we just called a cabin.
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: My wife's like, it's not a cabin. Yeah, but it's
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: there's something less of the there's fish posters hanging on
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: the wall. Books, I got coffee sitting next to me.
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: I'm looking through a window. And whoever painted that window
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: didn't know how to cut very well when they were
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: painting painting the frame, so they were drunk in a way.
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: I like it. So there's paint on the window. I'm
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: looking into like a mid tide, not a low tide.
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: Cal's mother was out on the beach picking rocks and
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: digging around for shells, and not thirty now, probably a
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: hundred yards past that. The kids were catching salmon not
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: too long ago. And there's boats parked out on a
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: little floating dock that we take out every morning into
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: the into the ocean basically into other coves and fish
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: for hall a bit. And there's call and Steve did
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: diving like there's just dope for scallops, and there's just
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: so much life and it's hard for me to put
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: it in a chestnut shell. But I'm the kind of
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: guy that likes to experience, Like I want to fish
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: for salmon, I want to dive, I want to do
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: all this stuff. And I wish we had more time.
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: But you never got to dive, never got to dive. Um.
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: So I mean it's an amazing place. I could see
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: myself like spending some serious time up up here and
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: not getting bored. Um. And yeah, I just wish I
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: wish we didn't have to leave. We gotta go to
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: a wedding, which it'll be good, but I wish we
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: had more time. But I mean, I appreciate you having
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: us up here. I was almost like bummed yesterday a
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: little bit that it was winded down. Yeah, and I
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: ran out of chew starting to shake ut. Yeah it's good.
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: What's up is that where you're smacking that gum right
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: now because you just bodies like your body so bad?
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: Not really, But the second piece, since we've done try
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: it down impressions, all right, Um, I've already been thinking
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: about this. First of all, I will say I'm so
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: excited to try the food, Like finally, I came up here,
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: like I said earlier, Chester warn We're like, hey, you
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: have to try this food. That's all we're gonna eat.
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: And I at home, you know, I don't really practice
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: the palette of different foods, and so coming up here
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: I already knew. I mentally I was like, Okay, I'm
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: gonna try some food. But not only just trying it.
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: It's like we literally caught it just this afternoon and
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: we're packing it. We're you know, I just love the
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: working I like, I love waking up the way we
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: got I finally getting into rhythm, packing the boats, what
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: needs to go in the coolers, and getting everyone assembled,
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: getting all the kids dressed and you know who's going
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: what boat. It finally felt like really good to have
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: an order and like go out and really fish and
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: going to that stupid wedding. Catching my first fish was
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: really cool and obviously I think you might have heard it,
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: I did, but yards away, I get really excited even
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: catching like a little, you know, this big of a fish.
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: So out here I knew it was going to be
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: a different experience. So the fishing was great. The hellib
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: it was incredible. Um I will say another one actually,
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: I really enjoyed was when you took Julie, Kelsey and
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: I to shrimp for the first time. It was just
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: a perfect setting. It was cool that you taught us
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: like what to do, like you didn't just like you
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: really just told us what to do. And I felt
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: like it was cool because sometimes people will show you physically,
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: but you like literally just told us you need to
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: do this and need to do that, go for it.
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: And obviously we looked Kelsey and I looked each other like,
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: oh ship, we got to pull it together. And it
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: was really cool to watch the process. And then on
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: our way back seeing that killer whale, that was one
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: thing I really wanted to see on this trip. I
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: was like, just the marine by you know, the wildlife
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: is just so different than what I've seen because also,
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: you know, I'm scared of everything, and out here I
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: feel like I got some acclamation and I'm not scared
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: of bears anymore. I saw a lot of bart bears,
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: not scared of killer whales. I know. I literally was
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: so excited about the profilely influenced by free Willie. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: I guess when I watched that a lot when I
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: was a kid, and I just loved that whale, and
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: I just think that they're just like a boss of
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: the ocean. I don't know, they're just something different. I mean,
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: you see, I feel like you would see I see.
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: I've seen different types of whales in California, like the
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: pump back. I just never really seen a killer whale
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: unless you know, unfortunately to see world once. But I
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: will say Danielle approached this trip with the way that
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: she approaches everything in her life, which is like feverish
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: enthusiasm and fun. And it was really cool to watch
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: you do that. It was pretty excited. You guys were
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: fishing off the boat and I was like, there's a
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: will I got really close to her and I was like, well,
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: that's really there. It was I don't know, I just
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: felt like I really want yeah. And then my last
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: impression is for photography. I just visually like, so I
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: obviously photographed weddings and people a lot, and I knew
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: I really wanted to grow my visual um artistic abilities
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: out here and I really wanted to, you know, look
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: at life in a different way and versus just when
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: you photograph people. It's such a different it's so different
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: than photographing stuff like this and to be able to
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: go home and show my experience, like through documenting it
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: and like not just like oh here's a pretty picture,
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: like really documenting what like how we fished, not like
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: the pretty picture. And anyway, it was really exciting. What's
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: your range? Like like plug your wedding photography business? Oh yeah,
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: my name is Danielle. My wedding photography business is Danielle
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: Lopez Photo UM on Instagram. What do you mean what's
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: my range? How far you travel? Photograph of wedding Um,
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: I'm actually wanting to travel, Like that's my whole goal
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: is to get out and travel because I, I guess
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: because I love being a visual learner and visual artist.
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: I would say Bozeman is getting saturated, like I'm in
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: the same venue, same areas, and I really flourish when
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: I'm in new places and I see different because I
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: feel like I see things differently than others. Hard to
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: explain it, but that's also why I feel like I'm
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: meant to do this job, because I see things differently
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: than others. So being out here, I was like, oh,
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: you know constantly and so and so people if they
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: want to see your wedding, do you post your wedding
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: photography on that Yeah it's on Instagram. Yeah, so it's
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: Danielle Lopez photo. Um on Instagram, people can hire you
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: to come photograph the writing, but you kind of filled
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: up now, Um, next year is getting there? Um? This year,
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: I've I'm at twenty one weddings. Um, and next next
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: year it's not even like I'm already at like ten
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: so and I have like eight emails to answer, So
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: it's exciting. Um, I think I'm capping it at twenty.
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: But I really wanted to trigger more of like the intimate,
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: like smaller weddings, because I feel like that's just where
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: it is. It's not about like all the glamour and
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: like the details. I just love the capturing connections and
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: actually genuine photographs and cut some people off the list.
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: You don't everybody called down. I'm here, I'm moment. The
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: one thing, the one thing I'll add about this trip
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: that I mean, the only downfall is we ran out
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: of boobe. Yeah we had no We're cutting up fish, Like,
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: how can we make a cocktail around here? That when
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: I drank a lot, we used to buy cases of
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: vodka leave it up here, cases of handles. Well there's
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: some crazy with the liquor, but we ran out of beer. Yeah,
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: thank you so much for having me up here in
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: Chest just the invite was incredibly special. Yeah, thank you,
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: great chef Andy impressions. Well plug your business? Are you
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: still doing catering? Yeah? Plug away down creative little table
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: full of people. Well, obviously I've been fortunate enough to come.
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: This is my thirteenth straight year coming up here. So years. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: thirteen straight years. Um, So I feel very very lucky
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: to be a part of this. And obviously that being said,
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: have made a lifetime of memories over those thirteen years.
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: And that's kind of the obvious is the company up
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: here is just a great group of people. And over
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: the years we've I've got to beat so many different
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: people because like here it is like table full of
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: people I've never met before. And over the years it's
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: been it's been that way. There's always you guys are
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: always bringing in quality people here. So it's it's been
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: it's been a pleasure getting to know so many different
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: people through the course of the last decade plus up here. Um.
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: And then that being said, being able to be a
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: big part of this and and put my culinary spin
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: on things, and and be able to cook for people,
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: which tends to bring some sort of joy to people.
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: I guess when you when you have good food in
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: a setting like this. My wife, uh is, like when
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: she's planning on coming here, she's very interested in overlapping.
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: She checks. She wants to know what andy schedules bring
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: it up. I mean, said I. I And one of
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: the biggest things for me is I catch myself a
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: lot just kind of laughing, just like the pure like
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: spoils of this place. Like any given night, I'll be
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: staring down the barrel literally hundreds and hundreds of dollars
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: of of seafood like on the market, like and I've
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: got just all of it at my disposal to to
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: play with it. Sometimes it's just mind blogging, like when
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: I'm looking at all this fresh dungeoness and and prawns
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: and and helmet, and I mean, it just it's sometimess
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: like overwhelming, and the fact that it's it's so direct,
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: because I mean, you go to the grocery store and
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: you're seeing that nice little packet of cellphone salmon, and
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: you think about the the fisherman, the deck hands the
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: processing ship. Then it goes to the you know, to
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: the cannies, to the truck driver, to the do you
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: think about how many and then to the grocery store handler,
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: like how many people have their hands in that we're here.
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: It's like you're waking up in the morning. You're going
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: to get that personally, processing and taking great care of
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: that product, only to then turn around and like be
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: able to share it with people not only right now,
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: but then down the line. We take the care to
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: package it, you know, rent everything really well. Get home
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: on that snowy you know, December night when you're cracking
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: that pack of how but open and it's like, you
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: guys are right there. That's one of my favorite parts
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: of this whole place is like and then I take
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: that and then share it. I mean I could you know,
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: dozens and dozens and dozens of people have experienced this
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: fish from this cabin through the years that I you know,
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: I just give the step away a lot, just like, hey,
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: you guys need Albert for your dinner night here? Yo,
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: Like I love being able to take this a experience
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: and then pass along. So this place is Yeah, this
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: place keeps on giving all year around this place keeps
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: on giving. Yeah, yeah, that's great, man, I know I'm
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: looking forward to anymore. Do you hit your impressions yet?
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: Let me wrap it up, because that's gotta get on
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: the old airplane to go to that stupid wedding. It'll
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: be a fun wedding. Chester. Do you get your speech done? Oh? Yeah?
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: Can you want previewer speech for everybody? Chester? Yeah? Chester

- 1:18:36Speaker 1: You're gonna say some nice stuff about her, give me
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: an idea about her? Oh, beautiful, beautiful Ashley. You're too
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: good for Bill. Since I'm the best man here at
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: this wedding, I don't know why you're not marrying me. Um,
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: you don't want to talk about it. No, I'm just
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: gonna I'm gonna have some talking points that I'm going
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: to write down and just kind of wing it in
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: a way, but have some structure to it. Throws some
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: jokes in. Yeah, probably they'll be bad. It'll be bad jokes.
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: Why not? So you're gonna say something nice about her,
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: say something nice about him, Tell a little story in
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: there about how he was so drunk. Yep yep um.
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: And you know mentioned the chicken political petition. It's a
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: good one. Oh yeah, they started a petition, chicken petition
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: that they started, so that'll be something. Well, they're chicken
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: crusaders to try to be allowed to have chickens in
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: their yards and they're going hard on it. When you
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: see Seth, he's got his shirt buttoned unbuttoned down to
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: his belt. He's got a tie tight around his head.
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: Do you see that? Pictures? Send them home. That's my
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: favorite set Send them on the minute. He ties the
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: neck tie around his head as a headband. Didn't do
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: that wedding because we wore bolo ties, so he's got
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: a bolo tie around his head like a headband. Send
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: him on. Alright, Cal, Oh did you have to do yours? Yeah? Yeah, yeah,
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: lots of life. Can we give a shout out to
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: Cal's mom. Yeah, Cal's mom crushed really is awesome. We
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: got to meet Cali. That was his date. Yeah, Jack
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: of Love. So, I mean, that's that's the coolest thing.
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: You know. I'm I'm thirty eight these days, and and
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: that's the first trip that my mom's or my mom
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: and I have ever done. Um yeah, yeah, and she,
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: I mean, she loves this this stuff, and I knew
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: she'd take off out here and she's she's very comfortable working,
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: uncomfortable not working, so she loves little jobs and stuff
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: like that. So, um, it was It's nice just being
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: when the first float plane takes off and it's got
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: your mom on it and Steve Ronnella, like, you know
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: that they're going to get along just fine because they're
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: gonna have plenty of things to work on at the
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: Fish and yeah, so that was a really really cool deal.
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: And uh, I know she'll be talking about this forever.
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: She's she's in heaven out here, and um oh, man,
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: I I haven't been up here. I came up a
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: lot after my first stay because we did and ended
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: up coming back here for a show and and something else.
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: So I got like a lot in the first year
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: or two years, and then I haven't been up here
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: in like five years. And yeah, it's just like it's
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: just like another spot on that list of place is
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: that you're just like aching to come back to before
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: you actually leave, which makes it hard. I hope you
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: just want every day to be like the best day
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: we've been putting in big days. This this is a
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: killer crew. It takes takes seventy two hours up here
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: for folks to settle in, getting a rhythm from from
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: what I saw this trip, and how to dry their socks. Yeah,
