- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it is Thursday, it's the
- 0:1615th of January and it's great to have your company.
- 0:18Thank you for tapping on play and inviting me into wherever
- 0:21you are, whatever is going on, so that you and I can put down
- 0:26the busyness of the day and spend a moment reflecting on
- 0:30God's word to us. And if you're anything like me,
- 0:33you must be really enjoying this moment of following Jesus
- 0:38ministry around, listening to his words, listening to the
- 0:41fervour with which he speaks and the generosity with which he
- 0:44deals with others. And today is no different.
- 0:47As we hear Jesus continuing to interact and teach and challenge
- 0:53our Holy Spirit, May these words of Jesus land in our hearts and
- 0:58change us and help us know him better.
- 1:02All right, friends, let us read together Luke chapter 14.
- 1:17One Sabbath day, Jesus went to eat dinner at the home of a
- 1:20leader of the Pharisees, and the people were watching him
- 1:23closely. There was a man there whose arms
- 1:26and legs were swollen. Jesus asked the Pharisees and
- 1:29experts in religious law, Is it permitted in the law to heal
- 1:33people on the Sabbath day or not?
- 1:36When they refused to answer, Jesus touched the sick man and
- 1:40healed him and sent him away. Then he turned to them and said,
- 1:45Which of you doesn't work on the Sabbath?
- 1:48If your son or your cow falls into a pit, don't you rush to
- 1:51get him out? Again, they could not answer.
- 1:56When Jesus noticed that all who had come to dinner were trying
- 1:59to sit in the seats of honour near the head of the table, He
- 2:02gave them this advice. When you're invited to a wedding
- 2:05feast, don't sit in the seat of honour.
- 2:08What if someone who is more distinguished than you is also
- 2:11invited? The host will come and say, give
- 2:14this person your seat. Then you'll be embarrassed and
- 2:17you'll have to take whatever seat is left at the foot of the
- 2:19table. Instead, take the lowest place
- 2:23at the foot of the table. Then when your host sees you, he
- 2:26will come and say, Friend, we have a better place for you.
- 2:30Then you will be honoured in front of all the other guests,
- 2:33for those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who
- 2:37humble themselves will be exalted.
- 2:41Then he turned to his host. When you put on a luncheon or a
- 2:44banquet, he said, don't invite your friends, brothers,
- 2:47relatives and rich neighbours, for they will invite you back
- 2:51and that will be your only reward.
- 2:54Instead, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame and the
- 2:59blind. Then at the resurrection of the
- 3:02righteous, God will reward you for inviting those who could not
- 3:06repay you. Hearing this, a man sitting at
- 3:10the table with Jesus exclaimed what a blessing it will be to
- 3:14attend a banquet in the Kingdom of God.
- 3:18Jesus replied with this story. A man prepared a great feast and
- 3:22sent out many invitations. When the banquet was ready, he
- 3:26sent his servants to tell the guests, come the banquet is
- 3:29ready. But they all began making
- 3:31excuses. One said I've just bought a
- 3:35field and must inspect it, please excuse me.
- 3:38Another said I've just bought 5 pairs of oxen and I want to try
- 3:42them out, please excuse me. Another said I just got married
- 3:47so I can't come. The servant returned and told
- 3:50his masters what they had said. His master was furious and said
- 3:55go quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and invite
- 3:59the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.
- 4:03After the servant had done this, he reported there is still room
- 4:07for more. So his master said, go out into
- 4:11the country lanes and behind the hedges, and urge anyone you find
- 4:15to come so that the house will be full, for none of those I
- 4:19first invited will get even the smallest taste of my banquet.
- 4:25A large crowd was following Jesus.
- 4:28He turned around and said to them, If you want to be my
- 4:32disciple, you must by comparison hate everyone else, your father
- 4:38and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, even
- 4:42your own life. Otherwise you cannot be my
- 4:45disciple. And if you do not carry your own
- 4:48cross and follow me, you cannot be my disciple.
- 4:53But don't begin until you count the cost for who would begin
- 4:57construction of a building without first calculating the
- 5:00cost to see if there's enough money to finish it.
- 5:02Otherwise you might complete only the foundation before
- 5:06running out of money. And then everyone would laugh at
- 5:08you. They would say there's the
- 5:10person who started that building and couldn't afford to finish
- 5:13it. Or what king would go to war
- 5:16against another king without first sitting down with his
- 5:19counsellors to discuss whether his army of 10,000 could defeat
- 5:24the 20,000 soldiers marching against him?
- 5:27And if he can't, he will send a delegation to discuss terms of
- 5:31peace while the enemy is still far away.
- 5:35So you cannot become my disciple without giving up everything you
- 5:39own. Salt is good for seasoning, but
- 5:43if it loses its flavour, how do you make it salty again?
- 5:47Flavourless salt is good neither for the soil nor the manure
- 5:51pile. It is thrown away.
- 5:54Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.
- 6:08Ah Lord Jesus, help us to keep our saltiness.
- 6:13Help us to continue to be inspired by you, to be light and
- 6:18salt in the world around us, not looking to promote our own well
- 6:23being or our own ends, but to be your hands and feet and to love
- 6:29you more than anything else in our lives.
- 6:34But in order to do that, we need your help everyday, Holy Spirit,
- 6:38to continue to shape us and direct us back toward you and
- 6:43your work and your Kingdom. So we pray just that.
- 6:48Make us your own as we continue to walk every step basking in
- 6:53your love, your forgiveness, and your provision.
- 6:57We love you and we pray, all of us, in your wonderful name,
- 7:00Jesus, Amen.
