- 0:06Hello, what's your least favorite scary movie?
- 0:13Hail Satan. Welcome.
- 0:15What's your least favorite scary movie?
- 0:16The podcast where we talk about the good, the bad, the ugly and
- 0:19the absurd and all of our. Favorite and least favorite
- 0:22scary movies Because we believe every horror movie rightfully
- 0:24has its fanbase even. If we don't always get.
- 0:26It my name is Travis. My name is Jesse and we just
- 0:30wanted to wish a happy almost birthday to the almost birthday
- 0:35girl. We're talking about long legs.
- 0:39Oh, oh God. I was like, is this somebody's
- 0:43birthday? I was really confused there for
- 0:45a second because it is actually our it's Tally's birthday today.
- 0:49It is day of recording. Yeah, 316, Yeah, OK.
- 0:53I don't have any announcements. Not that's good because I don't
- 0:58have a poll result. OK, I'm sorry, I forgot to do a
- 1:00poll. I it was it's been a weird.
- 1:03It's been. So yeah, just unfortunately
- 1:07didn't get around to doing that. But you know, I feel like we
- 1:09made-up for it with the extra fun we had with last week's,
- 1:12which was the unhinged playlist. Yeah.
- 1:14Maximum Crover. Crover Verse.
- 1:18No, you'd none of that came out correctly.
- 1:21Maximum Krover drive. There you go.
- 1:23There we go. Yeah, that's right.
- 1:25It's. A Krover verse.
- 1:26That's like the multiverse. I don't.
- 1:29Think. So, well, not yet.
- 1:31You got to have the next one and then the end credits.
- 1:33He'll come in and be able, you know, he'll be angry at somebody
- 1:35new. That's how that works.
- 1:37Yeah. But yeah, sorry, don't have any
- 1:39polls. So yeah, we're just going to be
- 1:41going right on into long legs this week, I believe.
- 1:45Right. Well then, let's just go right
- 1:46on to it. OK.
- 1:48Long Legs premiered May 31st, 2024 at the Beyond Fest with a
- 1:52wide release of July 12th, 2024. We watched it on Hulu, but you
- 1:57can also stream it on Disney Plus, or you can rent it from
- 2:00Fandango at home, Google Play or Prime.
- 2:03Written and directed by Osgood Perkins.
- 2:05Music by Zilgi. And if you're wondering if Zilgi
- 2:08is a pseudonym, of course it is. It's a pseudonym for Elvis
- 2:11Perkins. Elvis perk?
- 2:13Is that like a relative? I'm assuming Brother brother.
- 2:16OK interesting. I didn't know people were still
- 2:18named Elvis these days. Well, he is special effects
- 2:23coordinator was Sheila Erdman starring Mika Monroe's Agent Lee
- 2:28Harker, Nicolas Cage's long legs, Blair Underwood is Agent
- 2:32Carter, Alicia Witt is Ruth Harker and Michelle Choi Lee as
- 2:35Agent Browning Travis. Time for our favorite game
- 2:39budget. I believe this is a budget.
- 2:45Do you believe that? Yeah, yeah.
- 2:47I believe it's budget, yeah. I actually do not have a solid
- 2:50budget. What it is officially listed as
- 2:52is less than $10 million. Is it really like they know our
- 2:55game, they subscribe? Is F you?
- 2:58It is firmly bugged head. I feel like that was
- 3:00specifically from Nick Cage. OK, wow.
- 3:03I'm I'm shocked that it's below 10 million.
- 3:06That's surprising. Opening box office of 22.4
- 3:09million in a worldwide gross of 100 and 20 million a. 120 it's.
- 3:18Either 124 or 126. I clearly tried to write over
- 3:23one of those numbers that I can't tell you which one won.
- 3:26It's ambiguous, like the budget. It's intentional by design,
- 3:29people. Listen, I'm within 2,000,000.
- 3:33Yeah, OK. Current IMDb score is 6.6 out of
- 3:3610. OK.
- 3:37It's held a pretty high one then, I guess, yeah.
- 3:40OK, theme for 2024 that I pulled is deals with the devil.
- 3:45Now this could be metaphorical or otherwise.
- 3:48OK, so I know at least one of the movies.
- 3:50Is gonna be there. Limber up and get ready for some
- 3:53stretches. Really.
- 3:55Wait, we know what the devil's got to be here, right?
- 3:57No, that was 23. It wasn't it.
- 3:59Technically it premiered in 24 in theaters, but I think it's
- 4:02actual initial release is 23. Yeah, I don't really remember.
- 4:05OK, well, all right. Well, hit me with the first one.
- 4:08OK, the first one is heretic. OK, OK.
- 4:11Yeah, you kinda. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 4:13I don't wanna you. Can't go too hard into that one
- 4:16without spoiling anything, but I could I guess maybe, I don't
- 4:19know, like when you decide. People need to warm up, limber
- 4:23up. We're stretching.
- 4:24That's a really fucking good movie though.
- 4:26It really is. It's on Max now.
- 4:27If you have Max as a streaming service, absolutely highly
- 4:31recommend it. Hugh Grant is a force and I love
- 4:35Sophie Sophie Thatcher, but I'm obviously a little biased
- 4:38because I'm a big Yellow Jackets.
- 4:40Fan yellow jackets, yeah, I have no experience with her in that,
- 4:43but I thought she was fantastic in that movie too.
- 4:45Hubert is the star though. He sells that fucking.
- 4:48Thing He Really Does That. Released November 8th, 2024, it
- 4:52had a budget of 10 million, a worldwide gross of 58.8 million,
- 4:56and an IMDb score of 7.0 out of 10.
- 4:59Damn good. Yeah, yeah.
- 5:01Yeah, that was a shocker. That one was a lot better than I
- 5:03was anticipating. This next one is one that we
- 5:06still haven't actually seen yet. I know, I know, shame on us,
- 5:11slap on the wrist. But from what I understand,
- 5:13there's like a deal with like maybe a capitalistic devil type
- 5:17of thing and this would be the substance.
- 5:21Yeah. OK, I know some some wheelings
- 5:23and dealings and backfiring and stuff happens.
- 5:26OK, yeah, I still have stayed as much in the dark on that one as
- 5:30possible. Yeah, I, I from the from the
- 5:33bare bones amount that I know about this movie, it it seems
- 5:36like she makes a bad deal. There is a deal made, yes, it
- 5:39could be with the devil. We do not know for sure yet.
- 5:42A devil of sorts. Yeah, that released September
- 5:4420th, 2024. Budget of 17.5 million Worldwide
- 5:48Gross of 77.3 million of 7.3 out of 10.
- 5:53Wow, so you've just got like a batch of really highly rated
- 5:56movies too. I do, I do.
- 5:58This third one is one that we actually just watched very, very
- 6:01recently. And I'm gonna say that this is a
- 6:03deal with like modern tech age devil.
- 6:06OK. It's what's inside.
- 6:11Oh, is that the? Oh yeah.
- 6:12Yeah, yeah, they, they body switch with some technology.
- 6:16Yeah, that's not really a spoiler.
- 6:17It's in the trailer. This it's.
- 6:18Straight up the entire thing, yeah.
- 6:20Yeah, it's actually, it's a really good movie.
- 6:22It is a really good movie. We didn't know what to expect
- 6:24going into it other than the trailer seemed interesting and
- 6:29we like a couple of the cast members that we recognized so we
- 6:32ran with it. Do you highly recommend it?
- 6:35That released October 4th, 2024. I'm pretty sure it's like a
- 6:39Netflix. It's Netflix, got the
- 6:42distribution board, Yeah. I don't know if they funded it
- 6:44or not though. Yeah I don't think it's not
- 6:46listed as like a Netflix original, but it does look like
- 6:48it went straight to streaming. So no budget or gross for it,
- 6:52but it does have a 6.6 out of 10 on IMDb.
- 6:55OK, yeah, yeah. I mean, it's a pretty
- 6:57interesting movie. I definitely recommend it.
- 6:59Yeah, it's it wasn't what I expected it to be, but I still
- 7:03had a really good time with it. Those stretches weren't too bad.
- 7:05I was expecting some like real reaches there, but I could get
- 7:08where you're going with that. Yeah, yeah.
- 7:11OK. Tag lines.
- 7:13Yeah, none. None.
- 7:15There there are no tag lines. There's no tag lines, no.
- 7:18Tag lines. Dude they like they marketed
- 7:21this thing so hard but they couldn't even do A tag line.
- 7:24No tag. Line Well, what do we do now?
- 7:28Do we? Just like in the episode.
- 7:30Well, I'm gonna say it makes our job a lot easier when we come up
- 7:34with our own tagline at the end. Yeah, I guess that's nothing to
- 7:37compete with. That's true, yeah.
- 7:39I mean, we'll win by default, I guess.
- 7:41OK, well then let's. Yeah, let's have some fun then I
- 7:44guess. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I do have a
- 7:47few fun facts, OK. This is the highest grossing
- 7:50independent film of 2024 Oz Perkins's highest grossing film.
- 7:55Not sure if that's still true. If they're the monkey, I would
- 7:57have to pull up the numbers for that to compare.
- 8:00While you're speaking, I'm gonna pull up those numbers, OK?
- 8:03And this was Neon's highest grossing domestic film, so that
- 8:08makes sense. It was quite, quite a hit.
- 8:11Quite a hit. Yeah, I mean, it fucking did.
- 8:13Waves. I remember that.
- 8:15OK. So the monkey were worldwide
- 8:18gross. As of now, it's still is doing
- 8:20its run. I believe it's 54 million.
- 8:22OK. Yeah.
- 8:23No, this is still very much higher.
- 8:24Yeah, OK, maybe it's just the monkey who is just such a hit
- 8:28with us that I can't imagine it not being a slam dunk success.
- 8:34Well, long legs. I know it had a lot of hype.
- 8:37It had a lot of hype and I think it got its theatrical release
- 8:40like extended multiple times. Yeah, yeah, there was a lot
- 8:44going for it. The monkey, you haven't really
- 8:45heard as much buzz about it amongst other people that
- 8:49outside of our group. Yeah, people, that's true.
- 8:52I forget that. Like dark comedy is alienating,
- 8:56Yeah. Yeah, well, I've spoken to a lot
- 8:59of people at work. I work with some like people
- 9:02very plugged into horror. And I brought up the monkey
- 9:05like, yeah, really fucking good. And they're like, Oh yeah, well,
- 9:08I know it's the guy that did the long legs and I didn't really
- 9:10like that movie, so I'm not gonna watch.
- 9:11That oh dude, you all if you feel that way, it is so totally.
- 9:15Different it is. Yeah, Way, way way.
- 9:16Different almost hard to reconcile that this is the same
- 9:19man who did long legs and black coats daughter that's.
- 9:21What I told him it's like stylistically, if you like the
- 9:24way long legs are shot, the monkey will be good for you too.
- 9:27But it's a completely different movie tonally.
- 9:29Yes, if you also like to have fun while watching movies, yeah,
- 9:32you will enjoy it. Absolutely.
- 9:36So one of the very like loose inspirations for this movie was
- 9:39actually this kind of dark. So maybe like true warning the
- 9:42murder of Jean Benign Ramsay a while ago because one of the
- 9:46gifts she was she had that have been purchased for her for
- 9:49Christmas that year was a life-size doll that was wearing
- 9:52one of her old pageant dresses. That is creepy as fuck.
- 9:56That's real. Why the fuck would they do that?
- 9:59Those are real things. I had a doll like that.
- 10:01What? Yeah.
- 10:02You had a doll dressed as you? Yeah.
- 10:05Was it named Jesse? Yes, it was.
- 10:08Would it not be Jessica? OK.
- 10:11Don't. Don't do that.
- 10:13Don't do that. It's just we're already at the
- 10:16weird. That's the part that makes it
- 10:18weird. Calling it Jessica.
- 10:19Yes. OK, get the fuck.
- 10:21Out but like my mom sent in like head shots of me to make sure
- 10:24that the doll like matched me and it came with a dress and
- 10:28then a Jessie sized dress too so that way we could wear matching
- 10:31dresses. That's so fucking creepy.
- 10:34That is so weird. It, I really think it's like an
- 10:3880s and 90s thing. It's got to be I, really.
- 10:40Do it needs to stay there I. Wouldn't get it cuz you're a
- 10:43boy. Well, my, I had a sister and we
- 10:46didn't have anything like that that I know of.
- 10:50Maybe there's like. Even Nate dolls in the
- 10:51mountains. Maybe they're like, my parents
- 10:55were like, all right, let's shield this from Travis.
- 10:56So he's really sensitive. Yeah, they can't.
- 10:59Wait for tells and they're like, it has to stay out, Yeah.
- 11:02He's really fucking dumb. Like he'll think it's actually.
- 11:04Just yeah, like when were there 2 of you?
- 11:07Maybe there was like times I was actually like interacting with
- 11:09my sister and it was just like a dog.
- 11:11I thought they're. Like Travis, you never actually
- 11:14had a sister. Yeah, he's been installed this
- 11:16whole time. Like my our nieces and nephews
- 11:20are just like tiny old babies too.
- 11:23Like old tiny dolls. We're all just like they're
- 11:26constantly swapping out the older tooth, like bigger and
- 11:28bigger dolls. That's why.
- 11:30That's why the younger nephew is so quiet.
- 11:33Yeah, I'm keeping. I am keeping an extra eye out
- 11:38for any weird details next time I visit home.
- 11:42Anyway, that dog was found like 15 feet from her murdered body
- 11:46to get back to the less funny. Oh my God, okay, wow, okay, we
- 11:49brought it back down there. Yeah, so I was like, you know,
- 11:52that was just a really creepy fact that stuck with me, and I
- 11:55filed it away for later creative use.
- 11:57I'm glad that he also found that creepy and upset.
- 12:01He was also partially inspired by his mother hiding his
- 12:05father's sexuality from, like, the general public, plus also
- 12:08the children of the family, including, you know, him and his
- 12:11siblings. He said your mother can protect
- 12:14you from a truth that she thinks is unsavory.
- 12:17So I think that's kind of, you know, a, a challenge that a lot
- 12:20of parents face is like, what? When do I tell my children these
- 12:26harsh truths of the world, if ever?
- 12:28Like what? What is the line of protecting
- 12:30them? Yeah, yeah.
- 12:32That's. OK, which you can definitely see
- 12:34that theme in this movie. Definitely, yeah.
- 12:36Principal photography occurred from January 16th, 2023 to
- 12:40February 23rd, 2023 in Vancouver.
- 12:43There was a He says that he likes to use female protagonists
- 12:48in a lot of his movies, which you see up until the monkey,
- 12:51generally a female protagonist. And says he likes that because
- 12:53he inserts a lot of his like real life experiences, traumas,
- 12:58things like that. And having a female protagonist
- 13:00as an air of mystery and gives him what he refers to as a
- 13:03useful distance from the subject matter at hand.
- 13:06Oh, Stephen King, completely different.
- 13:11There is also an interview with Osgood Perkins in the Deadline,
- 13:15and he said that the producers actually had him add that scene
- 13:18at the beginning where Fisk gets shot after Harker has that,
- 13:22like, sense that, like, the guy we're looking for is in this
- 13:24house because initially it cuts to her doing that, like, ESP
- 13:28test or whatever. Really.
- 13:30Yeah. And the producers are like, hey,
- 13:31we need something that shows that she like really is like
- 13:34extra special. Wow.
- 13:35You know, that's one time where I would say producers were
- 13:38right. Yeah, and he even said, he said
- 13:40it was just, it was an amazing addition.
- 13:41It's one of those things that you don't get if you're just
- 13:43looking at your stuff on your own.
- 13:45Yeah, for sure. Because I mean, I remember
- 13:46watching that the first time, whenever that happened, it kind
- 13:49of caught me by surprise. And then there was another
- 13:52really interesting quote that I found that I liked a lot.
- 13:56And this is just him talking about, like, about Alicia Witt's
- 14:01character, you know, and what she's doing to try and protect
- 14:06Lee Harker. You got it exactly as her
- 14:08character is intended, which is to say that you do what you got
- 14:11to do. Mama bear will do the thing that
- 14:13she has to do to protect the baby bear.
- 14:15It's just innate. It's just spiritual biology or
- 14:17whatever you want to call it. It's instinctual.
- 14:19And she says toward the end of the movie, I did it for you.
- 14:22And that makes it right. And for her, there's no argument
- 14:24around that. It's like I had a choice.
- 14:26I could either hurt a bunch of people or let you be hurt.
- 14:28And for her, there's no choice there.
- 14:30Does that make her bad? Kind of.
- 14:32Does it make her an ideal mother?
- 14:34Absolutely. So I think anytime you're able
- 14:36to exist in the dichotomy of something or exist in the binary
- 14:40truth of something, that a mother can be both the creative
- 14:43and destructive force. God, people have plenty of
- 14:45those, right? Oh, my mother who made me is
- 14:48also the person who destroys me the most.
- 14:50That's a common occurrence. So I think that when you're
- 14:52writing these things, creating things or working your way
- 14:54through things, the acknowledgement that there are
- 14:56polls and that both of the polls can be true at the same time is
- 14:59more interesting than being like, let me tell you, let me
- 15:02explain to you. It's always this.
- 15:03There's space in that. That's interesting.
- 15:06I, you know, like hearing his explanation.
- 15:08I I get where he's coming from with a lot of this.
- 15:11It's kind of like a trolley problem type thing there.
- 15:13Yes, and it's definitely it's, you get those shades of the
- 15:18trolley problem too, where it's like, you know, the one person
- 15:21on this track and the five people on this track are the
- 15:24ones you don't know. That's the current trolley
- 15:26problem that the mom is at. Yeah, exactly.
- 15:28Yeah. However, at the end of the
- 15:31movie, she doesn't have to continue yet she does.
- 15:33I think that's what makes her a bad person.
- 15:36Yeah, I think, and I think it's, I think it's really interesting
- 15:38that he says like, she's a good mother, bad person.
- 15:41Yeah. And I think that's an
- 15:42interesting way of thinking about it.
- 15:44And I think it also says something about him processing
- 15:47some of his own childhood stuff. That makes sense, yeah.
- 15:51So those are the facts I have, OK?
- 15:53Which means that we're ready to go onto our good, bad, ugly and
- 15:56absurd. Okie, dokie.
- 15:58All right, I kick it off. Yes.
- 16:00OK, so this was watch #2 for us. So we watched it the first time
- 16:05and I, I came out a little bit disappointed.
- 16:10So I was really eager to do a second watch.
- 16:12I think a lot of people I agree with, they were a little bit
- 16:17misled with the marketing of the movie, which not necessarily the
- 16:20movie's fault, it's the marketing team's fault.
- 16:23They built it up to be more focused on like a serial killer
- 16:25type thing, which is not exactly what we got.
- 16:28So I had to readjust coming in with new or adjusted
- 16:33expectations. It got me to appreciate a lot
- 16:37more of the movie. So I think the the setup is
- 16:40incredibly interesting. I like how everything begins
- 16:43there. So we get this agent that you
- 16:45have with psychic abilities and they get it like right there out
- 16:49the gate. You're already introduced to the
- 16:52threat right away too, like the guy getting shot.
- 16:56I like that she's psychic, but she doesn't really see it that
- 16:59way. She just thinks she's like,
- 17:00really intuitive and she won't let people necessarily say she's
- 17:03psychic, you know? And she even points out she's
- 17:06like I get it wrong too. Yeah, like half second.
- 17:09Yeah. You know how they kind of refer
- 17:10to it there. But yeah, no, like, I think the
- 17:13characters and the mystery presented immediately is really
- 17:16strong. So it's a great start.
- 17:18I think the acting was really good.
- 17:20I think Monroe does like a very good job herself, especially.
- 17:23She has, like this very like, stiffness to her, which she
- 17:27never feels comfortable in her skin and you can tell.
- 17:31And there's something that's never quite right with her.
- 17:33And I think it's like her battling the shit that happened
- 17:37in the past and then not really ever processing it or knowing
- 17:41about it really. But it's all kind of
- 17:42subconscious there. Well, and he even said that in
- 17:45that interview with Deadline that, you know, because that
- 17:49doll still existed up until her mom shot it.
- 17:52Like those memories were held captive basically.
- 17:56So she was. Missing part.
- 17:57She is essentially missing that childhood.
- 17:59She's very disconnected from the concept of childhood because of
- 18:02that. Which, yeah, I mean, I think she
- 18:04does a great job getting that across with how she performed
- 18:08perfectly. I was able to appreciate the
- 18:10occasion a little bit more this time around too, because I
- 18:12wasn't looking for him this time.
- 18:13I think the semi allowed long legs to just be and that made
- 18:17the character a little bit more disturbing this time.
- 18:20Like I I allowed myself to be a little bit more immersed in the
- 18:24movie instead of like looking at it as a movie itself.
- 18:28I think the cinematography is good.
- 18:30The thing that it does really well in this is that everything
- 18:35is shot super wide, so it basically invites you and
- 18:38encourages you to assess every aspect of that frame because I
- 18:44never noticed the devil was behind her throughout the
- 18:47entire. Of as often as the devil is
- 18:50there. But you pointed that out last
- 18:51night and then I started looking and I saw it so many times which
- 18:55that added a whole new layer. But even before then, I was all
- 18:59like, my eyes are always roaming, which with how
- 19:03everything is in this movie, it kind of helps build that sense
- 19:06of dread. And you know that something is
- 19:08gonna be out there creeping around and you're looking for
- 19:10it. And just like, even whenever you
- 19:12don't see it, sometimes that makes you uneasy because you
- 19:15know something's there. So I think like that's like most
- 19:19of the good stuff that I like this time around with it.
- 19:24Yeah, I definitely like I and we've got definitely this
- 19:29religious element to it, right? And it there is a supernatural
- 19:32piece and the movie is never shy about that.
- 19:34It's pretty explicit about it right from the front.
- 19:36But I also do appreciate that it's a crime thriller.
- 19:39You can definitely see the influence of The Silence of the
- 19:41Lambs with this, which he even said, you know, he was like, he
- 19:45loves the 90s. You start with a concept that's
- 19:48really well known, Silence of the Lambs female protagonist
- 19:51chasing a bad guy. She's got a special sense for
- 19:53these things. And then you kind of take the
- 19:55story and you go from there, and you can definitely see that in
- 20:00this movie. I think Micah Monroe, she's just
- 20:04so great at giving this, like, vulnerability, but also like,
- 20:09I'm going to do what I fucking need to do.
- 20:11Yeah. I think she's really great at
- 20:13that type of a character. And it's always a pleasure
- 20:16watching her on screen, for sure.
- 20:21This is kind of an ongoing thing.
- 20:22So initially when long legs. Was, you know, announced you
- 20:27really wanted to see it? I didn't really care too much
- 20:30about it. I'm I've got complicated
- 20:32feelings about Nick Cage as a performer.
- 20:34We've talked about this some on the show.
- 20:36I'm not going to rehash that. I'm coming around on certain
- 20:40types of roles for him. So there was like one afternoon,
- 20:45we had some time. I felt like going to a movie.
- 20:48I was like, hey, let's go see long legs.
- 20:49I know you've been wanting to see it.
- 20:51I went in fully expecting Nick Cage to do as Nick Cage does.
- 20:55Yeah, and that's what I got. Yeah.
- 20:58You, on the other hand, were very upset.
- 21:01OK, I wasn't very upset. I was just a little bit let down
- 21:04because it wasn't what I was expecting it to be.
- 21:06But I still acknowledge it was a good movie at the time.
- 21:09But it wasn't what I wanted, yes.
- 21:12So I just think that was kind of funny that we had those two
- 21:14weeks. Yeah.
- 21:15Going into it where he was this time, watching it, going around,
- 21:18I was looking for Nick Cage to be Nick Cagey, and I just saw
- 21:21the character of Long Legs. Yeah, isn't that weird?
- 21:23Yeah, 'cause that's exactly what happened to me too.
- 21:25Yeah, and I think there's something, this is one of those
- 21:27movies that has that rewatch ability element because you know
- 21:30what's coming and you can look for different things, you can
- 21:33look for those layers, different, different readings on
- 21:36something. So I think that's another really
- 21:38great thing about this movie. Also, like Agent Carter's
- 21:43family, like seeing them and you want to root for them.
- 21:47And the daughter is just so frank.
- 21:50And you know, I just, I really, I really liked that a lot.
- 21:54Yeah, OK, All right, so some bad stuff.
- 22:00I this is this is one of the things that I see a lot of
- 22:04people complain about that I actually agree with myself.
- 22:06And I feel like it would have been like more to have like long
- 22:09legs actually be more involved with the stuff.
- 22:13The whole part, like the whole thing of the movie is he just
- 22:16makes these dolls basically and just gets them into the house
- 22:19and that's it. That's all he does.
- 22:22I was really expecting them to be a more involved, like hands
- 22:25on type of like serial killer type guy.
- 22:27And you know, I have a little bit more interactions with his
- 22:30victims type thing. Like I wanted to see that.
- 22:32I wanted to see more things like that scene where he goes into
- 22:35the store and interacts with that girl and freaks her out
- 22:38because that was interesting to me.
- 22:40And like seeing him just like listen to rock records and like
- 22:44making dolls in his basement wasn't as captivating.
- 22:48So yeah, that's one of the things that I would have done
- 22:51differently with this. No, that's pretty much it.
- 22:54That's pretty much the bad I have with this movie.
- 22:56I mean, really, there's not much else that I didn't really care
- 22:58for. But that was my biggest take
- 22:59away the first time too, because I wanted him to be more
- 23:01involved. OK, I I thought maybe the ending
- 23:09would feel less frantic and confusing this time around.
- 23:15Oh yeah, it's kind of. But it's still that, like, all
- 23:20the way up until the ending, everything's pretty
- 23:22straightforward, you know? Even like, whatever your
- 23:25feelings are about the supernatural, the movie makes no
- 23:28like, ifs, ands or buts about it.
- 23:30Supernatural is real and accepted in this universe,
- 23:33right? But then we get to the end and
- 23:35something just feels off, you know, because it's like the mom
- 23:39says something about like, oh, the wife is already dead and the
- 23:42daughter will be soon. But we still see the wife
- 23:44sitting there. Are we seeing a flash bag?
- 23:46Is that happening? You know what I mean?
- 23:47Like, I think she was speaking like they were already consumed
- 23:50at that point. So she was speaking like we can.
- 23:54It's basically like things are already in motion.
- 23:56We can kind of speak, you know, a little bit more bluntly about
- 24:00what's happening here amongst ourselves.
- 24:02They are under a spell right now.
- 24:04They can't really do anything. See, and I just, I don't, I
- 24:08don't really like it because the rest of the movie wasn't as much
- 24:11as like read between the lines and interpret it for yourself.
- 24:15Whereas this moment is. And it just feels, I'm not even
- 24:19as bothered as much by the exposition dump because I don't
- 24:22really feel like it's that much of an exposition dump.
- 24:24Like we've gotten a lot of those pieces.
- 24:27The mom's just like weaving it together for us.
- 24:30Yeah, I guess. It's just that ending at Agent
- 24:33Carter's house is a little bit unsatisfying for me.
- 24:37Yeah. I mean, isn't it all so weird
- 24:38that like they're focusing on the dot, like the birthdays this
- 24:44whole time and then his daughter has a birthday on that day,
- 24:47especially the day that they're like missing and he's not at all
- 24:52drawing any connections to that? Yeah, that he's not at all
- 24:57concerned about it. I Yeah, I I don't know, but do
- 25:00you want to hear something kind of creepy?
- 25:02What? My original due date was January
- 25:0514th. That.
- 25:06Would have been creepy, yeah. I just came a couple days early.
- 25:10Well, so you were saved. You were this close to being
- 25:13it's. Close it was almost long legs.
- 25:15How do you feel about the whole thing with like people putting
- 25:18like him putting orbs in like that dolls head And that's
- 25:21basically what it is. It doesn't.
- 25:23I've heard a lot of people complain that that's like a a
- 25:25weak point too, which to me it's whatever.
- 25:28It hasn't that that kind of goes on into what I was saying about
- 25:31long legs. Like OK, he puts a ball on a toy
- 25:34and then they they get it inside the house and then boom.
- 25:37It's like a it's a piece of magic.
- 25:38The movie is very upfront about it.
- 25:40I accept it for what it is. It can be upfront about it but I
- 25:43can still find it disappointing. I can accept it and still be
- 25:48like OK but I wouldn't like more.
- 25:50My thing is that even if this was a completely grounded in
- 25:55like our physical realm type of movie, if there is no
- 25:59supernatural element to it, I think it would be really hard to
- 26:03explain the lack of evidence at all of the crime scenes.
- 26:07You know what I mean? So I'm I'm willing to suspend
- 26:11whatever feelings I have about that and just go along with the
- 26:14ride for it being what it is. OK, it's not the worst really.
- 26:19I like the idea of something corrupting a family and like,
- 26:23you know, making them kill each other type thing.
- 26:25But it's like pick one, like have it be that and focus purely
- 26:32on that. And instead of like giving us
- 26:34like this like serial killer that they're investigating.
- 26:36But he's not really a serial killer after all.
- 26:38I mean he is a Satanist and they address that multiple times so.
- 26:43Yeah, like the whole time it's like leading you up to believe
- 26:46that he's responsible. Like, how the fuck is he killing
- 26:48these people? He's never there.
- 26:49There's no trace of them. What is he doing?
- 26:51Oh, he's not actually doing anything at all.
- 26:52OK. Yeah, but that's what I'm
- 26:55saying. Even if he had actually been
- 26:56doing something, there would have been more evidence and it
- 26:58would have just been like, it would have felt like a cheap,
- 27:00like sloppy police work type of thing.
- 27:02Could but then again, we've introduced supernatural
- 27:04abilities in this right here. That could be something and also
- 27:08there is a thing. I mean, that's a we listen to an
- 27:11up true crime. Yeah, but the supernatural
- 27:13ability like him corrupting the families, that is what the words
- 27:17are like. It's an element of the devil
- 27:19that's controlling the family. Yeah, no, what I'm saying is
- 27:22like, you know, even in real life, we've listened to enough
- 27:25cases where they couldn't find any physical evidence at all
- 27:28anyways. Yeah, but that was, you know,
- 27:32there for there to be 10 cases and there are no sign of any
- 27:38type. That's not a fishing.
- 27:40Killer. I just, I just don't buy it So
- 27:44and I think a lot of people would have had problems.
- 27:45I'm saying that there's no way that this would have been a
- 27:47fully satisfying ending for anybody.
- 27:50You set up to perfect of a killer, and nobody's gonna be
- 27:52happy with the conclusion. And maybe, yeah, maybe.
- 27:57What is your ugly? Let's see his way of interacting
- 28:01with young women, like that scene in the store.
- 28:05Like I said, the way that he, she's like, Dad, the creepy
- 28:11guy's here again, like he just makes them feel uncomfortable
- 28:15and creeps them out and he talks to them like little babies and
- 28:18stuff, and it's just so uncomfortable.
- 28:22Another is like the fact that Harker had to kill her own mom
- 28:26at the end of the movie, that nobody ever wants to do
- 28:29something like that, even though she had it coming and she
- 28:31deserved it. So sucks.
- 28:34Yeah, it's, it's upsetting. Yeah, I definitely something
- 28:39about that young girl working at the family, a hardware store and
- 28:44long legs coming in, and just in the fact that this isn't the
- 28:46first time he's done it and a little girl just has to keep
- 28:49putting up with it. Yeah, there's something that
- 28:52hits so true to life with that. I wish she didn't do the normal
- 28:56customer servicing where she's like having to appease him.
- 28:59She actually just straight of called him creepy like right
- 29:02there to his face. So I just, yeah, that's, yeah, I
- 29:08guess also the very LAX visitation roles at the hospital
- 29:13where Carrie Anne's at, the fact that anybody can sign in under
- 29:16whatever name. I like the the way that guy
- 29:18addresses that it's. Like.
- 29:21You don't take IDs here. No, that would be a great.
- 29:24Idea yeah. There's something about like
- 29:26that's, you know, you've got vulnerable people in this
- 29:31setting and it seems like you would want to kind of vet the
- 29:34people who come to visit them. You know, I, I know a lot of
- 29:37places, at least now they check to make sure that the person
- 29:40getting the visitor even wants the visitor or even that
- 29:43specific visitor. And they also make sure that
- 29:46they're in a good place to handle a visitor.
- 29:49You know, the fact that somebody can come in and sign in under a
- 29:53name, a fake name, just it's a bit icky to me.
- 29:56Yeah, also if I saw that guy wondering in there asking to see
- 29:59her, be like, hold on, let me see if she actually wants you
- 30:02first. Yes, exactly because.
- 30:04You're really strange. Exactly, right here with your
- 30:08hands over your eyes all upwards, being all weird.
- 30:13OK, absurd. Well, First off, Carter, forcing
- 30:17Harker to go inside his home and meet his family in the most
- 30:21forced way possible. She is so uncomfortable that
- 30:25entire time and like, everybody's just kind of going
- 30:27through the motions, and she feels obligated to do all of
- 30:30these things, I guess because it's her boss.
- 30:33I think he wanted her to go there because he wanted his wife
- 30:35to know this isn't somebody I'm cheating on you with.
- 30:37This is like my agent. I think it was also kind of it,
- 30:42it kind of felt like a vet bringing in a rookie and trying
- 30:46to get them to understand how, like, their work family is going
- 30:50to be kind of a family. Because sometimes you are up
- 30:53late together going over a case and you need to be comfortable
- 30:56enough with one another. It could be, yeah, that's kind
- 30:59of the sense I got from it. Because she was like, do I have
- 31:01to? And he was like, yes, but it
- 31:02wasn't like, I'm telling you to because I'm your boss.
- 31:04It was more like he was you need to be able to talk to other
- 31:08human beings. When they were rolling into the
- 31:09driveways like, ah, shit, the lights on, like he's like, well,
- 31:12I thought I was hoping I'd be able to sneak in.
- 31:14But now that she's here, I need to bring somebody here to be
- 31:16like, you know, be my alibi as well.
- 31:19No, I think it was very much a like, I'm going to come in late
- 31:25smelling of alcohol. I want to show that I have
- 31:27arrived, but I also want this person to like meet my family
- 31:30and interact with other human beings.
- 31:31Could be not just be nose on the case files falling asleep on the
- 31:34office floor surrounded by photos of dead people.
- 31:37Yeah, that's that's fair. The next one is the fact that
- 31:41they performed an autopsy on a doll.
- 31:44Is this a thing that happens every time a mysterious stall
- 31:47was found in a crime scene? That a medical examiner needed
- 31:50to do. Yeah, what is he doing?
- 31:52And he seemed excited about it. He seemed like this is new.
- 31:55Like he's, he's a coroner, but also like he's a doll hobbyist.
- 32:00And they're like, they're like, we're not bringing this to you
- 32:03as an Emmy. We're bringing this to you as
- 32:05Ralph. You know Ralph, who likes dolls?
- 32:08Yeah, he was giddy about the whole thing.
- 32:10Just like it's got a ball in its head, guys, y'all, It's got a
- 32:13ball. Carrie Anne's dialogue, that was
- 32:21probably one of the weakest moments for me.
- 32:23Yeah, you've brought it up yourself, but like, listening to
- 32:25it again here, it seems so forced.
- 32:27Southern. It's like, it's like how
- 32:31somebody who is writing a book would write somebody speaking
- 32:34very Southern and then somebody not southern not understanding
- 32:38that and trying to perform it in a way that's authentic.
- 32:41But it just it comes across as just bad.
- 32:44I have watched and enjoyed plenty of things starring Kiran
- 32:48Shipka, but I always feel like her dialogue is dialogue, you
- 32:54know what I mean? Yeah, it just, it I, it felt
- 32:57like words on paper. It didn't feel like a person
- 33:01delivering lines to me. It was weird.
- 33:03I didn't like it. And I guess the final thing is
- 33:09the fact that Carter doesn't buy long legs.
- 33:12Magic ball theory. However, he's fully on board
- 33:15with Harker having psychic abilities immediately in the
- 33:18movie. That doesn't make sense.
- 33:21I think it's because he saw the data tied with the psychic
- 33:25abilities. He did not see the data tied
- 33:29with the. Ball, But he's so quick to
- 33:30dismiss. The fact that there's a
- 33:32possibility is a weird thing, especially as somebody who is an
- 33:36FBI agent who confirmed has an agent with abilities.
- 33:40So why dismiss somebody else having abilities to a degree?
- 33:46You know, I just thought it was absurd.
- 33:47I thought it was weird. OK, yeah.
- 33:50All right. What are your absurds?
- 33:53My absurd the fact that the FBI has like has such a particular
- 34:03set of tests for, you know, divining ESP yeah, in its
- 34:08agents. There's that that I think is
- 34:12pretty like and also the the test administrator was really
- 34:17mean to Harker. Very direct, very rude, Yeah.
- 34:24That was probably one of the biggest ones for me, really.
- 34:27Yeah. The fact that they test for
- 34:28that. Like, I don't want to say like
- 34:30Long Legs's behavior was absurd because that's kind of the
- 34:33point, you know what I mean? How about the fact that he sings
- 34:36happy birthday for 24 minutes? That's frightening.
- 34:39Yeah. It's actually really scary.
- 34:41It is. Yeah.
- 34:42I will say the way he sings in the car, Yeah.
- 34:46OK. Maddie, Maddie.
- 34:50That's me. My celebratory diaper.
- 34:54OK, well I was going with the real, yeah, the real things, he
- 34:57said. Yeah.
- 35:00OK. All right.
- 35:01Cool. Well then, let's do our ratings
- 35:03then 7 1/2. 7 1/2 I'm gonna give it an 8.
- 35:09OK. So we got a 7.75 starting
- 35:13average. Yeah, I think before first on
- 35:161st watch I would have given a six.
- 35:18OK, so that bumped me a point and 1/2 after a rewatch.
- 35:21Good. Good, good.
- 35:22Yeah. All right, let's get into it.
- 35:25We start off, we got some T Rex lyrics on the screen, and then
- 35:29we catch you a snowy day, a house kind of isolated.
- 35:33A car pulls up to it and a young girl is watching through a
- 35:36window and she grabs her camera and goes outside.
- 35:39When she gets out there, the car is empty, but she hears a sound
- 35:43and she looks around and all of a sudden we see like the torso
- 35:46of this man who said like, you know, was saying hello to the
- 35:51almost birthday girl. And then he says, oh, dear, it
- 35:55looks like I wore my long legs today.
- 35:57And then he drops down and that made me jump the first time we
- 36:01watched. It's good.
- 36:02They the way that they handled him right out the gate is great.
- 36:05Like that's a good introduction and you just get a glimpse of
- 36:08his face. And I love how we immediately
- 36:10get that explanation for his name.
- 36:12Yeah, Long legs. Yeah.
- 36:13How did he, like, do it that one time?
- 36:15He's like, huh, that sticks. That sounds good.
- 36:18Does he say that to everybody? I think he just did that once.
- 36:20I was like, damn, that's my name.
- 36:22It sounds like the type of thing a grandpa says to a grandchild.
- 36:26You know, like, oh, I forgot my lot.
- 36:28I warm my long legs today. Yeah.
- 36:30And then, I don't know, maybe he just picked it up and he was
- 36:32like, you know what would make this even better?
- 36:34If I murdered families on top. Of doing things.
- 36:37I think he got back in his car and started driving home, and he
- 36:39just kept her playing that moment.
- 36:40And I was like, man, I did a good job.
- 36:42Yeah, that was so quick. OK, so we cut now.
- 36:46It was Part 1. Yes, it's physical letters.
- 36:49We have FBI agents. They are being briefed on this
- 36:54current case that they're working.
- 36:55There's a guy who's a serial killer targets neighborhoods.
- 36:59A middle-aged Caucasian male likely to be found in a
- 37:02particular type of neighborhood. So they've got to canvas door to
- 37:06door because they're all rookie agents.
- 37:08They're going to be assigned partners.
- 37:10That way there's no hurt feelings.
- 37:11Hurt feelings probably on the part of Lee Harker because it
- 37:14seems like Agent Fisk is kind of a douche nozzle because they get
- 37:17in their car. Like her, her partner, he
- 37:20doesn't seem like a douche. What what seemed douchey did
- 37:23about him? I pull up, I'll do the door
- 37:27knocking if you want to do the hanging back part.
- 37:29Oh, OK, I didn't. I didn't catch that part.
- 37:33Yeah. The thing that I thought was
- 37:35kind of him was like, oh, don't worry, I will knock on the door.
- 37:37Whenever he goes, everything gets shot.
- 37:38I don't. Know it was very much like I'm
- 37:41going to be the one to catch this man and you stay back here
- 37:44little girlie. Yeah, it was very much that,
- 37:47that kind of a tone. OK, Yeah, so he goes to do that,
- 37:50she's staying in the car and she's just kind of like checking
- 37:53the houses in the area. And she looks at one house and
- 37:55she says it's that one. It's 3525.
- 37:58I don't know why I know it, but I feel like we need to call it
- 38:00in. He was no, but let's go knock on
- 38:03the door. And he knocks on the door and
- 38:06immediately. It's blasted.
- 38:08Yep. Then Harker goes in there with
- 38:10her gun drawn. She clears out the area and
- 38:12finds in the bedroom just sitting on the bed and he's got
- 38:15his hands up so they rest them and then.
- 38:19She's got to go do a very special kind of test.
- 38:21She's got to do image word associations, and then she has
- 38:24to guess what number has been generated from zero to 100
- 38:28inclusive. And she does that 16 times and
- 38:30she gets it right eight times. But as she tells Carter and
- 38:33Boeing Browning Leader, she also got it wrong 8 times.
- 38:37Yeah, so you're like, all right, you're half psychic.
- 38:39Whatever, man. So it's better than none.
- 38:42All right, so they are going over the case.
- 38:45So basically, Long Legs has left letters behind every single one
- 38:49of his victims. Yes, they have a coded alphabet
- 38:53and they're all signed long legs.
- 38:54Yes, so far, ten families, 10 letters.
- 38:58The most recent one, the horns. They were a family of four, and
- 39:03there's no fingerprints, no trace of anything besides this
- 39:07letter. At each of the crime scenes,
- 39:10Carter asks her how she knew that guy was there in Colfax.
- 39:16And she was like, it's just kind of like something tapped me on
- 39:18the shoulder. He says, has that ever happened?
- 39:20For She goes, yeah, this time to time.
- 39:22You know, she. I like how she's just kind of
- 39:25very matter of fact of like, this is what has happened to me
- 39:28in my life. I have no better explanation.
- 39:30This is what it feels like. This is what I do with
- 39:31information. Yeah.
- 39:32Yeah. I mean, else, can you describe
- 39:34it? Yeah.
- 39:36Then we get a montage, which I normally love a montage, but
- 39:39this montage is kind of dark because instead of like, you
- 39:42know, a, a funky fresh beat we get, we get a crime scene tape,
- 39:48like an, an operator tape, like where he calls onto a dispatcher
- 39:52and one of them is like the dad of the family and he's like my
- 39:56daughter. I've got to, I've got to take
- 39:59care of her. Yeah, yeah.
- 40:01And then it's the operator trying to keep him on the phone,
- 40:03but then you can hear the chaos kind of erupts going on in the
- 40:06background there. So she's reviewing all the other
- 40:09cases and Carter is still kind of prying and giving her some
- 40:12info on the case. So he says let's go for a drink.
- 40:15And she says I don't drink. He says exactly, but I will and
- 40:18you're going to talk to me about the case.
- 40:19And so they sit down and he says, tell me what they have in
- 40:22in common. And she says, well, all the
- 40:25families have a daughter with a birthday on the 14th of the
- 40:27month, 15th, 14th. 15th of any month. 14th of any month is
- 40:33absolutely the 14th. I wrote down 15th here.
- 40:35You even laughed when I said that my birthday originally was
- 40:38supposed to be on. January.
- 40:39No, I know because 14th is Harker's birthday.
- 40:42That's why she was one of the targets.
- 40:44Why did they say 15th? They didn't.
- 40:46You just wrote down the. What did you write?
- 40:48What did you write? Did you write 14th?
- 40:5014th of the month and all the killings happened within six
- 40:55days of that, so the most recent one happened on the 8th
- 40:59891011121314. OK, OK.
- 41:05Oh, all right. OK. 14th makes sense, but I had
- 41:0915th written down. OK.
- 41:11That's what happened there. Travis.
- 41:14And This is why I'm not cut off for the FBI.
- 41:16All right, so Harker's reviewing evidence.
- 41:19Carter takes the referee, drinks like he said.
- 41:21So, yeah, no signs of long leg, No sign of long legs inside.
- 41:26He's always done them by all. The crimes are always done by
- 41:31the people themselves inside the house, and it's always done with
- 41:33something already inside the house, so nothing from outside
- 41:36is introduced. Yeah, so it's usually a knife
- 41:39from the kitchen in most cases, but in a couple of cases it was
- 41:42a gun. And then there was also the axe
- 41:44with the camera family. Yeah, yeah.
- 41:46So she drives him home and he makes her meet his family.
- 41:50He's got a daughter, Ruby, and she wants to show Harker her
- 41:53room. I think she likes seeing a
- 41:55female FBI agent. Yeah, and.
- 41:58She even asks her about it. She goes, did you always want to
- 41:59be an FBI agent? She goes, no, I used to want to
- 42:01be an actress. I like how she answers a lot of
- 42:03these because you can tell she's uncomfortable.
- 42:05She's like, no, she always looks like the little.
- 42:10Yeah, I think part of her is like also not knowing what's
- 42:13appropriate to tell kids or. Not Yeah.
- 42:15Is it scary to be an FBI agent and then, like, in her mind
- 42:18racing, like all the horrible shit that she reviewed today?
- 42:20Yeah, No. Not really.
- 42:22She's like, yeah, it's kind of scary, but because she can't say
- 42:25that. Yeah, it's downright terrifying
- 42:26because her dad's an FBI agent. Yeah.
- 42:28You know, she can't put that fear into her.
- 42:30Yeah. And then I'll.
- 42:31Probably die every day. And then she invites her to her
- 42:34birthday party. So Harvey goes home.
- 42:38She hears some loud music playing outside her house, which
- 42:40is weird because it doesn't seem like a super populated
- 42:44neighborhood. Yeah, and it cuts off right
- 42:46away. It's like rock music kind of
- 42:48sounding like long legs music. She takes a shower and calls her
- 42:52mom, who is just going through stuff in her house.
- 42:55And her mom is a hoarder, which we will see more of later.
- 43:01But I think that adds to some of the complicated feelings Harker
- 43:05has, like about her childhood. And yeah, I could see that and
- 43:08everything. Yeah.
- 43:09And they seem to have a strained relationship based off of this
- 43:12conversation here. She's they're talking about
- 43:15seeing each other. And Harker's making promises
- 43:17that she'll see her soon, but she's busy working on a case at
- 43:20the moment. And her mom says that she's
- 43:22doing nasty work. And at first you think maybe
- 43:25she's disapproving, and she is kind of disapproving.
- 43:27But then she says that she was a nurse for eight years, so she's
- 43:29seen some nasty things, but I guess she thinks it's nasty in a
- 43:33different way. Yeah, and then she's also asking
- 43:35if she's praying, doing her prayers at night.
- 43:38And then there's a sound so Harker's like, hold on, I I
- 43:42gotta go, I'll call you back. And there's a pounding at the
- 43:45door. So she puts her little chain up
- 43:47and she's kind of looking around the house.
- 43:48She's got her gun. She sees somebody outside, so
- 43:52she runs out the back door. And then while she's
- 43:54investigating the perimeter of her house, she sees that same
- 43:57person. Inside.
- 43:59This is probably one of the scariest scenes of the movie.
- 44:02Truly. Yeah.
- 44:03Yeah. It's very upsetting.
- 44:05So she goes back inside the house and clears the room with
- 44:08her gun there. And then she looks down and sees
- 44:11that there was a note left on her desk.
- 44:13There's an envelope that has Agent Lee Harker and then it
- 44:16says do not open until when. The 14th January 14th.
- 44:21Look, I know, OK, I know, but I wrote 15th so you get mad at
- 44:25last night. Me not current day.
- 44:27I'll be mad at all of you. OK.
- 44:31Part 2. All of your things, yes.
- 44:33So she opens the envelope and the ink is still wet and she
- 44:36manages to decode the message using the Bible and it's
- 44:41basically a threat to kill her mom as she tells anybody how she
- 44:45figured out how to decode this. Yeah, also the devil's just
- 44:48shown behind her. Yeah, there's that.
- 44:49Blinking. You'll miss the type thing.
- 44:51So she's called to a crime scene and it's long legs again.
- 44:55It happened a while back, though.
- 44:57The family was meant to be on vacation, so nobody thought to
- 45:00check on them. And then, yeah, people finally
- 45:03got when that they were missing and it's been a month.
- 45:06Yeah, so there's like still Christmas decorations and stuff
- 45:10up. We know Harker's birthday is
- 45:12January 14th. So, you know, depending on what
- 45:16the family's usual like Christmas decoration up and down
- 45:20thing, it kind of gives you a sense of like at least this is
- 45:24it's been a little bit. Yeah, yeah.
- 45:25And. Man, insult to entry.
- 45:29They bought and paid for those Disneyland reservations.
- 45:32I know, right? Yeah.
- 45:34Yeah. Well, at least you don't have to
- 45:35deal with the debt now. Yeah, so the dad was found out
- 45:40in the bar or out in the garage and the rest of the family was
- 45:44found in the master bedroom in the bed and.
- 45:47They're badly decomposed. And the cat is in a little
- 45:50carrier and that's mad. Yeah, my dad, thankfully.
- 45:55Yeah, I think the cat was put. We had this discussion last
- 45:58night. I'm of the opinion that the cat
- 46:01was put into a carrier by one of the CSIS like so.
- 46:05That way they can surrender it to a shelter.
- 46:07It would have had to have been because there's no way a cat
- 46:08would survive without anything for a month.
- 46:10Yeah. And then Travis said how was he
- 46:12eating anyway? And then I said the
- 46:13uncomfortable reality is that if you die in a home with cats, the
- 46:16cats will eat you before they start to die.
- 46:19Yeah. All right.
- 46:21So Harker calls her mom again and tells her she's not going to
- 46:25be able to see her. She's got a big case that she's
- 46:27working on. It's exciting.
- 46:28She's kind of happy about it. And this gets the mom a little
- 46:31bit more concerned and just wants her to continue praying.
- 46:33Yes. Then we get our favorite thing,
- 46:36microfiche. Yeah, Macrofish.
- 46:40So she's looking at some of the records and newspaper clippings
- 46:42of past murders, and she plots out when the murders occurred
- 46:47relative to the birthdays. So only a couple of them
- 46:49actually happened on the 14th. The arrest happened within six
- 46:53days of the birthday. And if you take it on a
- 46:55calendar, it all makes the satanic symbol.
- 46:59I don't know which symbol it is, but I drew it.
- 47:01It's a triangle upside down inside of a circle.
- 47:03Yeah, inverted triangle, I don't know enough.
- 47:08Something about 666, yeah. So yeah, murders occur 6 days
- 47:13before, before or after birthdays.
- 47:17And she has also decoded all of the notes that were left at the
- 47:21crime scenes and they all reference the camera family farm
- 47:24where X marks the spot. Carter's just not really that
- 47:28impressed. He's like, how'd you do this?
- 47:29And she's like, just. And he's like.
- 47:30She's like, I just looked at it long enough.
- 47:32It's like, OK, like you guys have been trying to crack this
- 47:36thing forever and she just comes over nice.
- 47:38Like, yeah, I got it right here. And he's just like, cool.
- 47:40What's? The half psychic power.
- 47:41I guess so, yeah, I always be enthused.
- 47:45So Carrie Anne is actually one of the lone survivors of any of
- 47:48these massacre is she survived because she was at school.
- 47:51She is now at Water Rock Psychiatric Hospital that is
- 47:55like a little over 100 miles away.
- 47:57And the camera family farm is a little over 80 miles away.
- 48:00So they decide they're going to look at the farm 1st and then
- 48:03visit Carrie Anne. And when they get to the farm,
- 48:05this is one of those shots that you were talking about where he
- 48:07does those real wide shots and it gives you that sense of the
- 48:10vastness. I think this one and the shots
- 48:12at her house, I think both are so one of the most effective and
- 48:16scary because you're like looking for all of the things
- 48:19that could be hiding in that open space.
- 48:20Yeah, the thing, especially in the house, is you get like the
- 48:24hallway and you can see the rooms behind her even.
- 48:26So like you're looking throughout the house, basically.
- 48:28You get like the whole view of the house.
- 48:30So you're just watching for somebody to be creeping around
- 48:33back there. Yeah.
- 48:34Yeah, so they find XS by the barn door and then they're able
- 48:40to follow it upstairs to the hay left.
- 48:42Yeah, there's like a cross on one of the planks and they pry
- 48:46it open. It is.
- 48:48It is a cross. And you'll notice in one of the
- 48:49flashbacks later, when Carrie Ann's talking about her dad
- 48:52murdering her mom, that same cross was hanging up on the
- 48:55wall. Oh, didn't notice that.
- 48:57Yeah. OK.
- 48:57So yeah, underneath it there is a box, and the box has a little
- 49:01doll. I for real the first time we
- 49:04watched this at first glance thought it was a mummified
- 49:06child. It kind of looks like one.
- 49:08Yeah. So they take this doll for an
- 49:12autopsy and the guy, like I said before, is so happy about it.
- 49:18Like did they need to utilize one of the like any rooms for
- 49:25this? Could they not have done it in
- 49:27some? Other Can you imagine, like
- 49:29you're waiting on like somebody you care about?
- 49:32They're like, OK, we need the autopsy to find out what
- 49:34happened. Like, OK, like, we'll do it in a
- 49:35little bit. Right now they're busy with
- 49:37another one. OK, who is it?
- 49:38It's a doll. He says that this doll is really
- 49:42well made. It's handmade porcelain, hands
- 49:45and feet and face, real human hair.
- 49:49The stuffing is all like very fine quality.
- 49:53And inside of the head is this little metal ball.
- 49:57And it makes a sound when you put the ultrasound little thingy
- 50:03up on it, the wand, which maybe that means something, but maybe
- 50:08it also just means the metal's interacting with the wand.
- 50:11That was kind of my thought. He goes, yeah, last night I
- 50:14thought it was whispering in my wife, my ex wife's name.
- 50:16But I also haven't been sleeping.
- 50:19This guy's just weird. Yeah, All right.
- 50:21So listen, I'm glad he I'm glad he had a good day hanging out
- 50:25with the Carrie Anne doll. I don't want to know anything
- 50:27else about out about this man other than maybe this is what
- 50:30convinced him not to quit his job that day.
- 50:32Yeah, maybe. Maybe this is the one that saved
- 50:34it. Yeah.
- 50:35All right, so now we're getting flashbacks of long legs with
- 50:38that doll, and he's speaking to it.
- 50:39He's naming it. I think he names it after Carrie
- 50:42Anne there too, I can't remember exactly.
- 50:45And then he enshrouds it and it looks super creepy and it's
- 50:48shroud. Yeah, and it's eyes glow from
- 50:50underneath. Yeah.
- 50:51Then we got to a long shot of a station wagon just absolutely
- 50:55bumping and grinding down the road.
- 50:58It is long legs, the station wagon and he's gone to the
- 51:01hardware store because he needs to get his enamel paint do.
- 51:04You think he's the type of person that when he pulls up at
- 51:06a red light next to somebody, does he turn his music down
- 51:09because he doesn't want to like be noticed or?
- 51:11Does he? No, he absolutely he.
- 51:13If anything, he turns it up and makes eye contact with the
- 51:16person next to him and like sings along without blinking.
- 51:19Yeah, OK, yeah, yeah, that would make me shit my pants.
- 51:25I wouldn't like that at all. That's one of those where you're
- 51:28just like you feel the person looking at you and you're like,
- 51:30I'm not looking at you, Yeah. You can see the peripheral.
- 51:35Just Nick Cage and long legs makeup, just like singing T Rex
- 51:38at you aggressively. Yeah.
- 51:43All right, so he arrives at the store.
- 51:46It's a craft store, it seems, and he's just going.
- 51:49It's a hardware store. He's a hardware store, Yeah.
- 51:51He's getting like enamel paint or whatever to be able to paint
- 51:53the ceramic. OK, yeah.
- 51:56And he like the girl is watching him through the anti shoplifting
- 52:01mirrors in the back and she's obviously off put by him.
- 52:05And then he goes over to the counter and he does this
- 52:06bullshit where he takes his hands and puts them over his
- 52:09head and he's just covering his eyes and he's being weird and
- 52:13creepy towards this little girl. And here's this thing.
- 52:16So in that interview, Osgood Perkins talked about, you know,
- 52:21this is kind of a moment of long legs.
- 52:23He is just a human person who has realized that he's made
- 52:26himself off putting to the people around him.
- 52:30He just wants to talk to this little girl.
- 52:33And because he is like, butchered his face and skin, and
- 52:38then he is so disconnected that he's just upsetting her.
- 52:42Well, I can empathize with somebody being lonely and
- 52:46feeling disconnected. You also, yeah, you all you need
- 52:51to also kind of read the room and read the space.
- 52:55And if you're wanting to make those social connections, not do
- 52:57things that are clearly making somebody uncomfortable that have
- 53:00clearly made them uncomfortable in the past.
- 53:03Because this young girl shouts out Daddy the creepy guys back
- 53:06again. Yeah, I don't know, I feel like
- 53:08you could go on a deep dive of Long Legs's psychological.
- 53:13I don't. Here's The thing is that I don't
- 53:15think that this is a phenomenon unique to a satanic serial
- 53:18killer in a movie. This is the thing that you see.
- 53:20No, that's what I'm trying to say.
- 53:22I think they like just like some kind of like thing where he
- 53:25doesn't necessarily, you know, know how to interact with people
- 53:28or he like doesn't get social cues or anything like that.
- 53:31But like he is still experiencing the frustration of
- 53:34wanting to have that connection but he just so he can't.
- 53:38He struggles with it, I think. I think this is the thing that
- 53:41I've seen multiple times in my life that I've been subjected to
- 53:45this kind of like attempting to be held hostage because I am a
- 53:51person that wants to have empathy with other people in the
- 53:53world. But like, you know, we've been
- 53:55at Barcades before and I had this dude completely corner me
- 53:59while I was in the middle of playing a game.
- 54:01How about Maria? And I was isolated and alone,
- 54:03and he's just like holding me hostage to his conversation.
- 54:07And I had to literally yell at him to get out.
- 54:09I have had older men say completely inappropriate things
- 54:12to me when I was at my serving job, and I am held hostage to
- 54:16that because I am at work. I don't think that this is like
- 54:19a thing that is necessarily just, like I said, aging satanic
- 54:25killers in horror movies. This is the thing that you see
- 54:27from people who don't have a ton of social interaction and don't
- 54:31understand what's appropriate and what's not appropriate.
- 54:33And you know, it's like I said with Franklin last month, two
- 54:36things can be true at once. While I empathize with them
- 54:38wanting to make those connections, that does not make
- 54:40it OK the way they choose to go about making those connections
- 54:43and making people uncomfortable over and over and over again.
- 54:45Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Yeah.
- 54:47He just, he just doesn't see the wrong in what he's doing there.
- 54:50Really. Yeah.
- 54:52I didn't realize that that was him raging at the whole thing
- 54:55there. You can see he kind of does look
- 54:57a little bit deflated on the drive back, but I thought that
- 55:00that was just him being himself. I fully believe that's probably
- 55:06how he sings in his car anyway. Probably, yeah.
- 55:08I think he chose that specific song to really like.
- 55:11Was that a song they were saying?
- 55:13I I. Assumed it seemed like I think
- 55:15he like threaded it in with some lyrics at the end there, but I
- 55:18think he was like mimicking her. Yeah, the.
- 55:21Store there too at the same time.
- 55:23I'm not gonna pretend to be like, well versed on T Rex's
- 55:26discography. I just assumed I was lyrics
- 55:29because that's kind of his whole thing.
- 55:31You dig? I guess, yeah, All right.
- 55:35So about 8 more than eight years ago, we know in reality it was
- 55:42closer to 20 years. But the current person that they
- 55:45speak with, the current worker at the hospital has been over,
- 55:48has been there over eight years. And he says in that entire time,
- 55:51Carrie Anne has been completely catatonic and she has had
- 55:54absolutely no visitors. And then yesterday she had a
- 55:57visitor and it's like the lights, like a switch flipped in
- 56:01her head and suddenly she was talkative and engaged and wide
- 56:03awake. The log says that the visitor
- 56:07was named Lee Harker. And she goes, does your guard
- 56:12check IDs? Well, that's actually a really
- 56:15good idea. But no.
- 56:16But no. Yeah.
- 56:19You would think. You would think that somebody
- 56:22running a psych hospital talking to two feds about a patient with
- 56:26a strange visitor would be slightly shitting their pants at
- 56:30their practices. Do we know when this movie
- 56:33takes? Place, it's in the 90s, is it
- 56:36OK. So Carrie Anne meets with
- 56:38Harker, and she tells her that her parents didn't really know
- 56:40what to do with her. Her she I guess the delivery
- 56:44with her was really difficult. And her mom bled a lot, was kind
- 56:49of resentful. And she said her dad was a good
- 56:52person, but, you know, that's why he ended up doing what he
- 56:55had to do. And we see him killing the
- 56:57priest and the mom with an axe. And she when Harker asks about
- 57:02who visited her yesterday, she goes, oh, I was just so happy to
- 57:06see him and even happier to be talking to the man downstairs.
- 57:10And if he asked me to jump off the roof of this building,
- 57:14Shirley, I would. If he asked me to kill you where
- 57:16you stand, Shirley, I would. And Harker's just like, OK.
- 57:24Carter asked what Harker isn't telling her.
- 57:27And she was like, what do you mean?
- 57:29And he goes, well, this, this case, this series of murders has
- 57:34been, you know, relatively little motion.
- 57:36And then you come in, things suddenly start moving again.
- 57:39Too many coincidences are happening.
- 57:42So I pulled your file and it looks like your mom called in a
- 57:44report on January 13th, 1974 on a tall, pale trespasser.
- 57:50So you're going to need to go talk to.
- 57:53Your mom? Yep.
- 57:54So yeah, she can't remember any of this either.
- 57:57So she goes and calls her mom or no, she goes to visit her mom
- 58:02this time. Which I will say, supernatural
- 58:05or no supernatural, that's a very real trauma response.
- 58:08Yeah. Your brain will just absolutely
- 58:10block out some unpleasant memories.
- 58:12And Travis can tell you he's seen plenty of times where like
- 58:15a memory from my childhood has come flooding back to me.
- 58:19Oh, yeah. I'm like, oh, I guess.
- 58:22I guess 8 year old Jesse needed to repress that for a while.
- 58:25Yeah, so again mom asks if she's praying.
- 58:28And then this time Harker just swelled and it's no, she never
- 58:31prayed in the 1st place. And then my mom's like, yeah,
- 58:33but it's bullshit. Doesn't do anything anyway.
- 58:35Yeah, she says the prayers scared her.
- 58:36And then her mom starts laughing.
- 58:38Yeah, and she goes. You know, prayers don't do
- 58:39anything anyway. Yeah, so Harker then goes and is
- 58:45kind of just messing around in the house, and then she notices
- 58:48that she's. Making teeth.
- 58:49Oh yeah, she's making. She notices that there's fake
- 58:51teeth up there too. She's like and she looks like,
- 58:54she's like Jesus Christ. Those aren't fake teeth.
- 58:56Those are her teeth that she lost when she was a child.
- 58:58They were labeled with her name and her age.
- 59:01Yeah. I thought that they were fake
- 59:02teeth like no for doll making. Material.
- 59:04No. Those are her baby teeth.
- 59:06Oh, that is. Weird.
- 59:07I wouldn't be surprised if Long Legs was using them in the dolls
- 59:09though. Yeah, I mean, it would make
- 59:11sense. She gets a sense of something
- 59:13downstairs and then she heads towards the basement door to
- 59:16open it, but the door is locked and then the mom calls her back
- 59:20into the living room so she doesn't get to investigate any
- 59:22further. She does ask her got her 9th
- 59:24birthday and her mom says, well, I don't remember much.
- 59:26You know, we never got any visitors, no family, nobody.
- 59:30And she says that Lee was allowed to grow up and because
- 59:34she was allowed to grow up, she forgot what she could for both
- 59:38their sakes. And she goes, but you know what?
- 59:40I never threw anything away. All of your things are in your
- 59:43room. So Harker brings her, like, Li's
- 59:47memory chest or whatever it was home, and she's looking through
- 59:51the photos that she took on her little Polaroid camera when she
- 59:54was little and. There's that picture of long
- 59:58legs in there, like how it just like flashes real quick and she
- 1:00:01has this visceral reaction to it.
- 1:00:03So she gives the photo to Carter, and she's like, this is
- 1:00:05long legs. She's like, how can you be sure?
- 1:00:07And she's like, dude, either you want to believe I'm psychic or
- 1:00:09you don't. Like, you need to pick a lane,
- 1:00:12Carter. Yeah.
- 1:00:14They're like, OK, we're starting a manhunt on this right here.
- 1:00:16They know. And then I got some long legs
- 1:00:18noticed at this point too, cuz he's got his suitcase backed up.
- 1:00:22He's standing at a bus stop and he's just waiting.
- 1:00:24And then there's cops coming from all directions and then
- 1:00:26they get him. So he's arrested.
- 1:00:30Del Ferdinand Kabul is his full name and they begin his
- 1:00:34interrogation. He says he knows Harker from a
- 1:00:37friend of a friend of a friend. And he really wants to see her.
- 1:00:40And then he starts singing Happy Birthday and they shut off the
- 1:00:44tape and say that that went on for 24 minutes.
- 1:00:48I know people laughed in the theater whenever we saw this
- 1:00:51part, but then like watching it again at home I'm like, this was
- 1:00:54actually unsettling. Yeah, no, like that was like
- 1:00:56uncomfortable laugh for me, like.
- 1:00:58Yeah, I feel like some people thought it was funny because I
- 1:01:01mean, I can. It could be comedically
- 1:01:03delivered that line, but so the luggage he had, it's full of
- 1:01:08notebooks with satanic material and they still have no evidence
- 1:01:12that he's killed anybody based off of what they found.
- 1:01:15Yeah, they're like, it's legal to be a Satanist.
- 1:01:17Yeah, that's that's not a problem.
- 1:01:19So. But Harker says she wants to
- 1:01:21talk to him. Yeah, she's certain that he has
- 1:01:23an accomplice, so she's gonna go figure it out.
- 1:01:25And today is the 13th, and they're expecting something big
- 1:01:29to happen on this day. So she's like, I gotta get down
- 1:01:31there and get to the bottom of this.
- 1:01:33So while she's talking to him, he he makes it very clear he
- 1:01:37knows her and he references a she cuz he says you know, the
- 1:01:40day you chose to be in law enforcement.
- 1:01:43She and I had a good laugh about it.
- 1:01:45Well, I laughed anyway. Yeah, also right before it's.
- 1:01:49It's one of those things that makes the lessons ever.
- 1:01:51You watch her, but like they're like, OK, where is he?
- 1:01:54And then they tell her like, Oh yeah, he's right downstairs,
- 1:01:58right below your feet, which is basically.
- 1:02:01One of those things also that I forgot to write down in my
- 1:02:03notes, but you just may remember when Harker is talking to Carrie
- 1:02:07Anne, she asked if she had any visitors.
- 1:02:09She said Once Upon a time I did, and she looked an awful lot like
- 1:02:12you. And we're thinking maybe it has
- 1:02:14something to do with the doll cuz she'd just gotten the doll
- 1:02:17out. But it's probably her mom.
- 1:02:18But it's probably her mom. Yeah.
- 1:02:20Yep. I I made that connection last
- 1:02:23night too. Yeah.
- 1:02:24Yeah, this movie's really good for rewatches.
- 1:02:27Yeah, and he said that this, this same.
- 1:02:30She she could either choose to destroy the things she cares
- 1:02:34about, or she can bow down and do terrible, terrible things.
- 1:02:37And he says hail Satan and then smashes his face to death.
- 1:02:41Yep. Oh, and he also says go talk to
- 1:02:44your mom. Yeah.
- 1:02:45Right before he starts to bash his face to death.
- 1:02:48Part three. Yeah.
- 1:02:49Long Ways is dead. Yeah.
- 1:02:50Part three. Birthday girls.
- 1:02:52Carter's pissed because now Long Legs is dead, they don't have a
- 1:02:55lead, and oh, guess what? While Harker was in there
- 1:02:57talking to him, Carrie Ann jumped off the building.
- 1:03:01But do we think she did that because of the discussion or
- 1:03:04because they had broken apart the ball to make sure it was
- 1:03:08empty? Did they?
- 1:03:10He says that happened too. I never thought of that.
- 1:03:13It could have been that, yeah. It could have been just like she
- 1:03:15didn't want to live anymore after that.
- 1:03:17Yeah, something happened. Browning drives Harker to bring
- 1:03:23in her mom basically at this point, like that's that's the
- 1:03:26only lead that they have. So they get there and Harker's
- 1:03:30like, I'll go in, I'll talk to her, I'll convince her to come
- 1:03:33out. You just wait out here.
- 1:03:34So she gets out and she walks away, but we see mom behind.
- 1:03:38Dude, and this right here, they did a great job because her
- 1:03:40outfit and the way that the mountains like the trees and
- 1:03:43everything in the back perfectly camouflage like it lines up
- 1:03:46perfect with her outfit. It's crazy.
- 1:03:49It's really well done and she creeps up from behind.
- 1:03:52She's got a double barrel shotgun.
- 1:03:53She points it right through the window and then boom.
- 1:03:56And Lee sees this, and she starts to come outside.
- 1:03:59We see the mom go around to the other side.
- 1:04:01Just for good measure, she's gonna shoot Agent Browning on
- 1:04:04both sides of the head. Yeah.
- 1:04:08And Harker follows her around behind the house, and she sees
- 1:04:11the mom as pointing the shotgun at a tiny little Lee Harker
- 1:04:14doll. Yeah.
- 1:04:15Wearing almost the same outfit that we see the little girl was
- 1:04:18wearing in the opening scene. Yeah, this is gonna be really
- 1:04:21confusing for Harker. And then her mom shoots the
- 1:04:24doll. We see some smoke release from
- 1:04:28Lee's head and then she passes out.
- 1:04:31And then we get a voice over from Ruth Harker talking about a
- 1:04:34mom and a little girl who lived in a little house.
- 1:04:36They had no visitors until a doll maker arrived and said that
- 1:04:40they want a doll from the church.
- 1:04:42The work was magic, but it was the magic of the devil.
- 1:04:45The doll made the girl forget and only see what she was
- 1:04:48supposed to see and not see the other things around her.
- 1:04:51The devil wanted the girl but the mom wouldn't let her.
- 1:04:54She begged to spare her in exchange for help.
- 1:04:56All she had to do was get the doll inside of these other
- 1:04:59families houses and stay and watch and make sure things
- 1:05:02happened the way he wanted them to happen.
- 1:05:07And we see like, reenactments of some of these things happening,
- 1:05:10most notably at the Canberra family farm where Ruth Harker,
- 1:05:13dressed in a nun's habit, walks up, says they want a gift from
- 1:05:17the church and it's a doll. And the mom is so happy, so
- 1:05:19excited. Except then murder starts
- 1:05:22happening pretty quickly. This worked out a lot better for
- 1:05:24long legs because it's much more easy to like allow somebody like
- 1:05:29her inside your house instead of somebody like long legs.
- 1:05:32Yeah. Especially since his whole thing
- 1:05:34was sneaking in the backyard and going cuckoo.
- 1:05:35Cuckoo. It's kinda cuckoo.
- 1:05:38Yeah, cuckoo. If it were up to me, it'd be
- 1:05:40cuckoo. But he says cuckoo.
- 1:05:42Cuckoo. He says it incorrectly.
- 1:05:44I mean like, you need your pinky out with it, cuckoo.
- 1:05:46Yeah, I. Feel like Doctor Eve?
- 1:05:49So Harker wakes and she is downstairs and long legs his
- 1:05:53bed, and somehow that is one of the creepiest parts of all.
- 1:05:56Yeah, and we find out he's been living in their basement.
- 1:05:59The whole time, yeah, he's been living in their basement.
- 1:06:01She gets off through the the upstairs and then it's in the
- 1:06:04mom's kitchen. Yep, she answers a phone call
- 1:06:07that says she you're going to be late for Miss Ruby's birthday
- 1:06:12party was. This the devil?
- 1:06:14Yeah, OK. Pretty sure.
- 1:06:16What was the mom like? Mom, is that you?
- 1:06:19I don't. Know see your person so she.
- 1:06:26She takes a long legs car. She takes Yeah, cuz her mom took
- 1:06:28her car. Yeah.
- 1:06:29Agent Browning's car is covered in Agent Browning.
- 1:06:32Yeah. So she pulls the tarp off of the
- 1:06:34station wagon that it's long legs, the station wagon, and
- 1:06:36she's driving. It's very much the same shot,
- 1:06:39yeah, that we see of him doing the mommy daddy screaming.
- 1:06:41So this time she's just, yeah, she's just wailing cuz.
- 1:06:44She's remembering everything now.
- 1:06:46Yeah, so she gets there. The mom dollar already there.
- 1:06:50Carter's being very weird. He is like, Oh yes, Miss Ruby's
- 1:06:53just now opening her gifts. There's nobody else at this
- 1:06:56party. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:06:58And the daughter is just sitting there with the doll mixer and
- 1:07:01just staring at it. Yeah.
- 1:07:04It's very unsettling. It's very weird.
- 1:07:07And then the mom is like, all right, it's time to cut the
- 1:07:10cakes. They keep saying cakes, plural,
- 1:07:13but like, he's like, all right, I'm going to cut the fucking
- 1:07:16cakes. It's your fucking stupid idea
- 1:07:17anyways. What the fuck is happening here?
- 1:07:21For some reason I'm picturing cupcakes, but they're like one
- 1:07:24of those weird families that wants to limit sugar to an
- 1:07:26absurd degree, so they're gonna cut the cupcakes.
- 1:07:29I can see Carter being one of those guys, absolutely.
- 1:07:32Yeah. Like they're gonna go to the
- 1:07:34kitchen and then she's the mom's like, all right, we'll be right
- 1:07:38back. He's like, no.
- 1:07:39I will be. You'll still be in the kitchen.
- 1:07:41Damn, Which? Even murderer aside, like
- 1:07:43assuming he wasn't gonna murder her, that's still a red flag.
- 1:07:46Yeah, definitely. Yeah.
- 1:07:49So they're in there doing the business in the kitchen, and
- 1:07:52then Harker is trying to talk the mom out of everything and
- 1:07:55she's like, it's too late. The.
- 1:07:56Mom's like, I wouldn't change a thing.
- 1:07:58She was like, I would kill whoever I needed to kill to let
- 1:08:01you grow up. And Carter comes out, He's got
- 1:08:03the knife in his hand. Harker shoots him.
- 1:08:07She shoots her mom. She tries to shoot the dog but
- 1:08:12the guns either out of ammo or it jams.
- 1:08:14Yeah, the devil's doing the devil's work.
- 1:08:16And she doesn't find something else to destroy the dog.
- 1:08:19She's like, all right, let's go like.
- 1:08:21Maybe she did. We we don't really get anything
- 1:08:24after this. Like maybe her, you know, maybe
- 1:08:26she realized it was better to not remember after all, so she
- 1:08:31wanted to do that for her, that kid.
- 1:08:35You know it could be because remembering cause potentially
- 1:08:39carry in to kill herself and Parker is overcome with a lot of
- 1:08:45pent up. Shit, but also maybe if Ruby
- 1:08:48sees all of this and processes it in the moment.
- 1:08:52Well, see, I think you could get very deep with this.
- 1:08:55It could be like the whole perpetuating, like what your mom
- 1:08:58did. Even though you realize it
- 1:08:59wasn't bad, you find yourself doing the same thing.
- 1:09:01She's sheltering. She thinks she's sheltering this
- 1:09:04girl from something by doing this, or she's just perpetuating
- 1:09:07that when, you know, she could be doing the honorable thing,
- 1:09:10the real good thing, and freeing her of that stuff and letting
- 1:09:14her know it's really interesting.
- 1:09:16I don't know. I don't know.
- 1:09:18What I do know is that before we cut your credits, we get one
- 1:09:20final shot of long legs in the interrogation room and he says
- 1:09:24hail Satan. Yep, Yep.
- 1:09:27And then we get some tea rigs. Mm Hmm.
- 1:09:30Biggie. Gong.
- 1:09:31Yeah. All right.
- 1:09:35I'm making Madden 8. I think this is a really good
- 1:09:36movie. I think if the ending was maybe
- 1:09:39like just just just a little bit.
- 1:09:42Yeah, I think I'll I'll make mine an 8 also.
- 1:09:45I liked it. Yeah, I like it a lot more after
- 1:09:48rewatch. If anybody didn't really care
- 1:09:51for that first watch, I absolutely recommend giving it
- 1:09:53another shot because you might feel better.
- 1:09:56I still I still feel though having him be more directly
- 1:10:00involved would have made this a much better movie for me.
- 1:10:04That's the type of movie that I like.
- 1:10:06I just want a slightly cleaner ending.
- 1:10:08The ending could have been a little bit more tidy too.
- 1:10:10But I, you know, I like that. It got me to do some
- 1:10:14interpretation there of my own of like, what could be
- 1:10:18happening? What's the meaning?
- 1:10:19What's gonna happen? You know, it's pretty good, all
- 1:10:24right? What did Talia think of this?
- 1:10:28Well, Talia was already primed to be spooked because she'd just
- 1:10:32come from outside and it was raining.
- 1:10:34She was wet, she was grumpy. There's a lot of storming in
- 1:10:36this movie too. It was not great for her and she
- 1:10:39fell asleep as the movie was on and she was having poor little
- 1:10:42scary baby nightmares. She just have a big nightmares.
- 1:10:44Yeah. So I think she's, I think she's
- 1:10:48going to give this an 8 also. Yeah, yeah, it scared her.
- 1:10:52Was always ultimate warrior. Let's see.
- 1:11:01I think Zoe. I think Zoe's Ultimate warrior
- 1:11:04is the devil in the shadows because Zoe is a black.
- 1:11:06Cat and she. Just magically appears in the
- 1:11:09shadows all the time. She could also be the dolls
- 1:11:12underneath the like, the draped like whatever it is like where
- 1:11:15the eyes just kind of glow in darkness.
- 1:11:18That's what she does too, which I guess is Satan.
- 1:11:20Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:11:21OK, we'll make it. Satan.
- 1:11:22Devil. Devil.
- 1:11:25Say, OK, so who did you relate? To who?
- 1:11:32Who did I relate to? I related to Carter because I
- 1:11:41would need to do some heavy drinking to deal with that type
- 1:11:44of bullshit. You know, like, I would make an
- 1:11:48excuse, like, all right, we're talking about this show.
- 1:11:50Let's go get some drinks. Yeah.
- 1:11:59I guess I probably, I guess I probably relate to Harker, just
- 1:12:06the whole like, yeah, here's a written piece of my childhood
- 1:12:09I'd forgotten. My brain blocked that out for
- 1:12:11me. So that's fun.
- 1:12:12Also, I like to scream in the car, so that's fun.
- 1:12:15OK. Also I would relate to long legs
- 1:12:18cuz I also like to blast my music.
- 1:12:19I don't stare people down and sing at them aggressively
- 1:12:22though. But that's us making our
- 1:12:25interpretation. On yeah yeah, yeah, that's our
- 1:12:27own interpretation of him. OK Dream sequel.
- 1:12:34Long legs too. Ruby and Lee, they're their own
- 1:12:40buddy caught movie cuz Lee has just kind of run off with Ruby.
- 1:12:43There's no good way for her to explain any of this.
- 1:12:45She shot her boss. Yeah, and her mom.
- 1:12:48Yeah, stole a kid. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:12:51So she is a. So in this right here, she's on
- 1:12:58the run, yeah, with the kid, yeah.
- 1:13:00Maybe she like embraces Satan and like, you know, she kind of
- 1:13:05becomes like a anti hero type thing where she's like doing
- 1:13:09what she thinks is right, but she's kind of being bad in the
- 1:13:11process and. And maybe Ruby is being
- 1:13:14influenced by the doll instead of like how it was with Lee,
- 1:13:16where she was just kind of like passive in her childhood.
- 1:13:20Yeah, maybe Ruby is being influenced by the Devil in a
- 1:13:24panic. Oh yeah.
- 1:13:26Yeah, yeah, yeah. I can see that, yeah.
- 1:13:28Like Harker thinks that she's doing right.
- 1:13:30But Ruby, it's there to like, notice her, like character flaws
- 1:13:37now that everything is unfolded and, you know, she has to be
- 1:13:42like the person to keep her on the right track or something
- 1:13:45like that. I don't know.
- 1:13:46This would be a really tough movie to do a sequel.
- 1:13:48To yeah, not everything needs a sequel, but we like to set this,
- 1:13:52this difficulty up for ourselves.
- 1:13:54Yeah, OK. Well, hey, we have something
- 1:13:56easy to do now. A tagline.
- 1:13:59You got one? All right.
- 1:14:01Long legs, short arms. T Rex.
- 1:14:10Perfect. Yeah.
- 1:14:12Long legs, short arms. T Rex.
- 1:14:16OK, sure. Yeah, I mean, it fits, right?
- 1:14:19Yeah, so we got long legs and big short arms, smaller T Rex,
- 1:14:23tiny underneath. That's funny.
- 1:14:27OK. All right.
- 1:14:29So I guess it's time for reviews.
- 1:14:33Yeah. Yes.
- 1:14:34OK, so I did something a little bit different.
- 1:14:36OK. And I went to Reddit.
- 1:14:38Whoa, I know dangerous, dangerous game to play.
- 1:14:42So I've got like 3 different reviews on them cuz they're
- 1:14:52obviously they're not all ranked, right?
- 1:14:55So it's a little bit of a different way that I pulled them
- 1:14:58up, but I was trying to kind of got some different ticks on the
- 1:15:01movie. Are you reading all three?
- 1:15:02Yes. OK, Well, we got a lot of listen
- 1:15:04reviews, so we're going to be doing a lot of.
- 1:15:06Reviews These are all these are all fairly short.
- 1:15:08OK, this one says they towed the middle too hard and either it
- 1:15:11either needed to be way more grounded with Nick Cage just
- 1:15:13being a deranged weirdo who thinks he's talking to Satan, or
- 1:15:16really commit to the occult element harder and earlier.
- 1:15:19OK. That's kind of I guess maybe
- 1:15:22where I was screening with a. Yeah, yeah, I agree.
- 1:15:29His legs were normal length. I loved how the cinematography
- 1:15:34built dread at the start and the cold open was terrifying.
- 1:15:37The rest was sort of garbled but it could have been good if it
- 1:15:39was structured better. Less caged screen time.
- 1:15:41He was the scariest when he was just out of frame.
- 1:15:44Overall cool concept, but not great execution.
- 1:15:47OK. Yeah.
- 1:15:50I mean, he is a little bit more scary when like they're
- 1:15:53withholding some of that stuff like the opening where they
- 1:15:56barely show him. Yeah.
- 1:15:58I get it. And then this one, this was kind
- 1:16:00of a more of slightly positive leaning because I didn't know
- 1:16:04how you were going to land with your feelings, but I liked this
- 1:16:07as an interpretation of some of the things that happened and I
- 1:16:10wanted to share it. OK, see, I saw it a bit
- 1:16:12different. All of the families in the movie
- 1:16:14were religious families who were obviously active in their church
- 1:16:17because they never once questioned the church lady.
- 1:16:19However, the devil managed to infect and ruin these families
- 1:16:21by infiltrating their homes by a false agent of faith that
- 1:16:24pretends to be a servant of God. The Bible warns that the devil
- 1:16:27can trick people by appearing as an Angel of light.
- 1:16:30And you have long legs who is completely covered head to toe
- 1:16:32in white is inspired by the Satanic Panic era, but it's a
- 1:16:36subversion of it. The dangers of Satan is real,
- 1:16:38but it's not coming from outside of the church.
- 1:16:40The evil hides like wolf in sheep's clothing and it's
- 1:16:43unknowingly being invited inside the homes of those who don't
- 1:16:45recognize it. It should be noted that when the
- 1:16:48priest showed up and got murdered along with the family,
- 1:16:50he immediately recognized Lee's mother.
- 1:16:52We see through her eyes and that something was wrong.
- 1:16:55He's truly good and he becomes collateral damage from long legs
- 1:16:58deception. Also, Lee's mother says her
- 1:17:01prayers never worked, but that's because she allowed the devil,
- 1:17:03well literally into her home. Yet Lee says she never said her
- 1:17:06prayers because they made her scared and she's under the
- 1:17:08influence of long legs the whole time, so a prayer would scare
- 1:17:11the actual devil. Interesting.
- 1:17:15OK. I like that movies can be deep
- 1:17:19like that and, you know, have that material there to really
- 1:17:22make things make sense. But I don't like having to,
- 1:17:24like, have done homework to understand why the movie works.
- 1:17:28You know what I mean? Yeah, like just make it work on
- 1:17:30its own and then let the details speak for itself.
- 1:17:33I feel like if you need to know all this stuff for a lot of it
- 1:17:35to make sense, and that's. I I'm going to disagree a little
- 1:17:39bit because I sometimes thinks that horror movies can be
- 1:17:42targeted to a specific type of audience and there are a lot of
- 1:17:44people who have religious upbringings.
- 1:17:47You can probably appreciate some of the depth of that in a way
- 1:17:50that like, I personally can't. Yeah, OK.
- 1:17:53Yeah. I didn't grow up with like a
- 1:17:54super religious family. They like practice religion, but
- 1:17:58you know, I definitely didn't have like the Super.
- 1:18:01So I guess it's like, I grew up in a religious area.
- 1:18:03I heard a lot of stuff, I've seen a lot of things, but I
- 1:18:06wasn't like necessarily active in the church through a lot of
- 1:18:10reasons I'm not going to get into right now.
- 1:18:12Right. OK.
- 1:18:14All right. Those were some interesting
- 1:18:15takes. Yeah.
- 1:18:16OK, OK. So let's go ahead and let's get
- 1:18:19to our listener reviews. I'm excited that we have so
- 1:18:21many. Yeah, me too, actually.
- 1:18:22All right, so let's see here. We will start out on Instagram.
- 1:18:30So First off, Ezekiel says an unsettling, haunting and dark
- 1:18:37film that forces you to bathe into the dread.
- 1:18:41Yeah, it definitely does. I mean, this movie just kind of
- 1:18:44drips that uneasy feeling throughout the entire time.
- 1:18:48A lot of it has to do with how it was shot, but the
- 1:18:51performances definitely help with that too.
- 1:18:53Absolutely. Curious Miku 8.
- 1:18:56It's. Jurassic Souls.
- 1:18:58Jurassic Souls, yes. I couldn't remember the second.
- 1:19:00I was going to say Jurassic Park and I was like, it's not
- 1:19:01Jurassic. Park.
- 1:19:02Yeah, I know. Jurassic Souls on other
- 1:19:04platforms. This was a movie that forced its
- 1:19:06way under my nails and chilled my spine.
- 1:19:09Unsettling vibe, definitely yeah yeah.
- 1:19:12Goes into what we were saying with the Ezekiel keepsake.
- 1:19:14It says needs more long legs. Yeah, I got.
- 1:19:17Longer legs. Yeah, it needs needs to be
- 1:19:19taller. It needs to look like that one
- 1:19:24UK player right now. Amari Williams Yeah, Big boy.
- 1:19:29Yeah, Amber says. I was excited for this movie and
- 1:19:33then I was so bored I couldn't finish No2 outs in.
- 1:19:37Great nap though. How do you rate the nap Amber?
- 1:19:45Man, if you asked Talia, that was a stressful nap for Yeah,
- 1:19:48no, she was not well. Rested.
- 1:19:49She woke up and she watched us play WWE2K25.
- 1:19:53Yeah, I get it. A lot more entertained by that,
- 1:19:56yeah. No, I I absolutely get it
- 1:19:59though. Yeah, that was the.
- 1:20:03It's not the vibe that was necessarily advertised.
- 1:20:05Yeah, exactly. Yeah, it was very misleading.
- 1:20:08The marketing didn't do any favors, but maybe try it again.
- 1:20:12I I would recommend that as somebody who didn't care for as
- 1:20:15much the last time Tucker says. Really enjoyed this one.
- 1:20:19Fantastic cinematography, great acting and interesting premise.
- 1:20:23What's to love couldn't have been a bit longer or could have
- 1:20:26been a bit longer to fix the pacing issues and avoid some of
- 1:20:29the two exposition heavy scenes. And let it be known that I love
- 1:20:33Nicolas Cage in this movie. And then he also sent a picture
- 1:20:36of himself dressed as long as and he did a fucking good job.
- 1:20:38Oh. My God.
- 1:20:40Good job, Tucker. OK, It gives it 8 1/2 out of 10.
- 1:20:43OK. That's solid.
- 1:20:45Yeah. That pretty much echoed a lot of
- 1:20:46stuff that we were saying, too. All right, over on WAIT Yeah.
- 1:20:51Over on Blue Sky, Jason says 5 stars fit my favorite film of
- 1:20:56last year. Also, contrary to most people I
- 1:20:58talk to, I love the supernatural aspect of it.
- 1:21:01Lean into that shit. OK, I'm, yeah, like I said, I'm
- 1:21:05OK with the supernatural. It was very forthcoming about
- 1:21:08it. And because of that, I was able
- 1:21:10to like just be, just be OK with it, you know?
- 1:21:14Yeah, it's just, I get it. I get, you know, on 2nd watch
- 1:21:19I'm into more, but on 1st watch I was wanting it to be more
- 1:21:22grounded. I guess I was OK with having
- 1:21:24some of the supernatural like psychic abilities.
- 1:21:27But she has. What's it called?
- 1:21:30Yeah, Yeah. And that's cool.
- 1:21:33But whenever it got to the whole thing with long legs and how he
- 1:21:36performed his murders, that was not my thing at that time.
- 1:21:40And then Tyler says this one was really well done.
- 1:21:43There was tension and atmosphere that made me so uncomfortable
- 1:21:46and scared. The performances were great.
- 1:21:47Everyone felt like they were in a twisted Napoleon Dynamite.
- 1:21:52Also, she was once a nurse. Now her new occupation would be
- 1:21:56murdering families. A+ screen writing.
- 1:22:00It feels very, by the way. Yeah, No, I know.
- 1:22:03It's very like misery coded almost, except she like murdered
- 1:22:08while she was a nurse. Oh yeah yeah you're right.
- 1:22:13Final review from a buddy chat. Overall my favorite movie was
- 1:22:172024. Saw it multiple times at the
- 1:22:19cinema and even more at home and every single time I see new
- 1:22:23things. I've been a new Cage fan since I
- 1:22:26was a teen and Michael Monroe is amazing in every role I've seen
- 1:22:30her in, even if the movie sometimes isn't the best.
- 1:22:33God is a Bullet for example. Everything about this film works
- 1:22:36for me. The vibe, the pacing, the weird
- 1:22:38camera angle was in all of the Satan 10 out of 10.
- 1:22:42You know, I expected nothing less of a review from Chad on.
- 1:22:45This chads probably currently the world record holder of
- 1:22:49people who have watched Long Legs right now.
- 1:22:51Yes, I think he's probably watched it two times since we
- 1:22:54were recording this episode. Yes, he's also the biggest
- 1:22:57proponent in me getting over my Nick Cage ambivalence.
- 1:23:01Yeah, yeah. You know, if anybody's gonna win
- 1:23:03you over on that one, it's Chad. I'm pretty sure I got one of his
- 1:23:06super patentedly aggressive high fives when I told him I was
- 1:23:10coming around on Nick Cage in some roles so.
- 1:23:13Yeah, yeah. He's not for everybody and he's
- 1:23:15not for every movie, but the movies that he fits well in, he
- 1:23:18does well. In, yes, I really loved Dream
- 1:23:20Scenario. I thought that was fantastic.
- 1:23:22Yeah, that was fantastic. Made me look at David Byrne in a
- 1:23:25whole new light. I look at David Byrne in the
- 1:23:29exact same light as I've always looked at him and.
- 1:23:34OK, that doesn't for this week's episode then.
- 1:23:37Thanks everybody for putting on your long legs and joining us
- 1:23:40this day. Next week we will be returning
- 1:23:44back to our franchise. We're gonna be talking about The
- 1:23:47Texas Chainsaw Massacre 22. Where can people watch that
- 1:23:51right now? There it is right now they can
- 1:23:55watch it on Tubi, Pluto TVMGM plus YouTube prime time, Sling
- 1:23:59TV premium, prime premium, YouTube TV premium or Philo
- 1:24:03premium. OK, so the two of those are free
- 1:24:05options. Very watchable movie.
- 1:24:08This one is Bill Mosley at not his most arranged, but one of
- 1:24:15his favorite roles for sure. Probably one of my favorite.
- 1:24:17For him. It'd be between that and his
- 1:24:19Firefly character. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:24:22He's, he's a, he's a good actor. I just want him to eventually be
- 1:24:26allowed to heat his hair. He has to shave for, shave his
- 1:24:30head for all of the roles he wants.
- 1:24:32Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:24:35So we're excited for that next week.
- 1:24:37Yeah. But you know what else we're
- 1:24:38excited for? What?
- 1:24:40Shouting on our bubbies. Yeah, shouting on our bubbies on
- 1:24:42the Patriot. Yeah.
