In 1781, General Thomas Sumter’s forces seized critical bridges in Berkeley County, starting with the historic Goose Creek Bridge—repeatedly rebuilt since 1680—where Colonel Wade Hampton’s troops routed British forces under Lieutenant David Waugh, aided by the Patriots’ advantage in sweltering July heat. Hampton’s men then stormed St. James Goose Creek Church, capturing Loyalist parishioners and their horses, while pursuing Waugh’s retreating troops to the Quarter House, where Waugh was mortally wounded. The Patriots also destroyed two British indigo sloops and rounded up thirty sailors…
