- 0:06Speaker 1: It's often said that the people of Utah speak a
- 0:09Speaker 1: language all their own. It's a language that's often confusing
- 0:13Speaker 1: and even incomprehensible to newcomers here in the Beehive State.
- 0:17Speaker 1: So Radio from Hell presents a handy guide to help
- 0:20Speaker 1: everyone understand how the natives speak. It's the Utah word
- 0:24Speaker 1: of the day, and today's word.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Is snugly, s n ugg l y, snugly. And now
- 0:32Speaker 2: to use this word in a sentence is the mayor
- 0:35Speaker 2: of Mona, Utah, Don Krittle, and his unusual son Denver.
- 0:40Speaker 2: In an atypical moment of curiosity, Denver has asked his
- 0:43Speaker 2: father about how the city they live in got the
- 0:46Speaker 2: name Mona. Again, the word is snugly, Daddy.
- 0:51Speaker 3: I didn't have nothing to do earlier today, so I decided.
- 0:55Speaker 2: To do some thinking.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Oh when I started thinking about with the name of
- 0:59Speaker 3: our town, how come the town we live in is
- 1:02Speaker 3: called Mona? Mona a lady or something like that. Well, son,
- 1:07Speaker 3: there is a story there, But the name of the
- 1:11Speaker 3: town don't have nothing to do with a lady. It
- 1:15Speaker 3: has to do with a surgeon with the British Army
- 1:18Speaker 3: who come to town and thought he knew better than the
- 1:21Speaker 3: folks who live here what the town should be called.
- 1:24Speaker 1: So was the town called Mona?
- 1:26Speaker 3: Then, no, it was not. When the pioneers came here,
- 1:29Speaker 3: they settled a little village around Clover Spring, so they
- 1:33Speaker 3: called the town Clover Spring. No, they called it Clover Creek,
- 1:38Speaker 3: and then they changed it to Willow Creek. How come
- 1:42Speaker 3: they changed the Daddy, Clover Creek sounds just fine. Well,
- 1:45Speaker 3: the story goes that they looked around and somebody said,
- 1:50Speaker 3: you know, there aren't all that many clovers around here,
- 1:55Speaker 3: and then somebody else said, but there's sure a lot
- 1:57Speaker 3: of willows. And that's how that happened. What about Mona? Well,
- 2:02Speaker 3: like I said, there was this former surgeon in the
- 2:05Speaker 3: British Army who come down here to attend a meeting
- 2:09Speaker 3: in the ward meeting house, and he was asked to
- 2:12Speaker 3: speak because well he was a foreigner and that would
- 2:15Speaker 3: be something different. And doctor mcune, that was the BRIT's name.
- 2:19Speaker 3: Doctor mcune. He said to folks, you should change the
- 2:23Speaker 3: name of this town. Willow Creek's snugly name, and the
- 2:28Speaker 3: name of Clover Creek snugly name too. Well, then what happened, Daddy,
- 2:31Speaker 3: How did they come up with Mona Well. Because he
- 2:34Speaker 3: was a British surgeon. The local folks paid attention to him.
- 2:38Speaker 3: He told them, your town needs an impressive name, and
- 2:42Speaker 3: he suggested the name Mona. But why Mona, Daddy Well,
- 2:48Speaker 3: because that was the name of his hometown on the
- 2:51Speaker 3: Isle of Man.
- 2:53Speaker 1: That's it.
- 2:54Speaker 3: It's an impressive name because his town was named that.
- 2:57Speaker 3: I know, snugly reason Denver, but remember he was British.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Join us again some other time as we examine how
- 3:06Speaker 1: the Utah natives speak with the Utah word of the day,
