  SPEAKER_06: We need a break.
• 0:52
SPEAKER_06: Look all the gray hair.
• 0:54
  SPEAKER_01: Who are you telling?
• 0:56
  SPEAKER_06: Oh my god.
• 0:57
  SPEAKER_06: Well, you know what?
• 0:58
SPEAKER_06: We have we have a pretty cool episode today, and it's going to, I mean, we're gonna be with uh Robbie Elias today.
• 1:06
SPEAKER_06: And for those that recognize the name, you've seen him in some of the the most recent uh concerts and uh gloria performances.
• 1:16
SPEAKER_06: For those that don't, check them out because besides him working with Gloria, he's done so much on his own.
• 1:22
  SPEAKER_06: So really cool artist.
• 1:23
  SPEAKER_06: We're so excited.
• 1:24
SPEAKER_06: So we're gonna go dive right into this week in Gloria History.
• 1:28
SPEAKER_06: So Wesito, take it away.
• 1:30
  SPEAKER_02: All right.
• 1:31
SPEAKER_02: So this week in Gloria History, um, we are going to go back to 2008.
• 1:39
  SPEAKER_02: Um time travel.
• 1:41
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, time travel.
• 1:42
SPEAKER_02: Gloria's last world tour, 2008, 2009, the Noventa Millas Tour.
• 1:48
SPEAKER_02: I don't know, was it actually officially called the Noventa Mills Tour?
• 1:52
SPEAKER_06: I think it was, but what was interesting about that tour was there were certain stops that didn't necessarily um uh showcase it as or advertise it as noventa mias.
• 2:08
SPEAKER_06: Some uh I think so, for instance, the one in at the Hard Rock in Hollywood in Florida, that one, I think it was like Gloria Stefan and Miami Sound Machine greatest hits or something something like that.
• 2:21
SPEAKER_06: I I don't remember uh off the top of the book.
• 2:24
SPEAKER_01: I think it was like Gloria Stefan Live or like a like not one night only, but build like that.
• 2:29
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 2:30
SPEAKER_06: So I think everything was, you know, under the umbrella of the unofficial Noenta Mia's tour.
• 2:37
  unknown: Right.
• 2:37
  SPEAKER_06: Does that sound right?
• 2:39
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the the how I understood it, or you know, what it seems to me is like some of those shows in the US were like one-off shows at casinos, um or special shows like that.
• 2:49
SPEAKER_02: Um, really, when when I think of the tour, you know, Gloria mentioned, you know, 2004 was our last tour, um, but we only got that in the United States.
• 3:00
SPEAKER_02: So she had to do something for her international fans, right?
• 3:03
SPEAKER_02: So I feel like the 90 Mills tour was the international version of that.
• 3:07
SPEAKER_02: And then there were you know some one-off shows like like you said in Hollywood, Florida, which was in October 24th at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel.
• 3:17
SPEAKER_02: And um then she did hit Hawaii.
• 3:20
SPEAKER_06: The day after Rob's birthday.
• 3:22
  SPEAKER_06: That's right.
• 3:23
SPEAKER_06: That was that was a fun tour.
• 3:24
SPEAKER_06: That that tour actually took me to Rotterdam.
• 3:28
SPEAKER_06: And uh at the time I planned the the trip.
• 3:33
SPEAKER_06: My husband thought I was planning this, you know, this couple's trip to to Paris, to Holland, to Rotterdam.
• 3:42
SPEAKER_06: He had no idea that there was an ulterior motive.
• 3:46
SPEAKER_06: So when we get there, he's like, wait, we're going to see Gloria four times.
• 3:52
SPEAKER_06: He was he was bamboozled.
• 3:54
  SPEAKER_06: Wow.
• 3:55
SPEAKER_06: But it was it was fun.
• 3:56
SPEAKER_06: And we we arrived the day of the concert, we were arrived in Holland, had to take a train to to Rotterdam.
• 4:02
SPEAKER_06: We had no idea where we're where we were going, what we were doing.
• 4:06
SPEAKER_06: But they my god, they people in the Netherlands they could party.
• 4:12
SPEAKER_06: We had such a blast, and she just kept on and kept on singing and encore after encore.
• 4:17
SPEAKER_06: So that that was amazing.
• 4:19
SPEAKER_06: I got to see the the Rotterdam show.
• 4:21
SPEAKER_06: I got to see her perform in Puerto Rico.
• 4:23
SPEAKER_06: I think Puerto Rico was the following year.
• 4:26
SPEAKER_06: Uh but that was fun.
• 4:29
SPEAKER_06: I what was interesting about the Puerto Rico show, I really wasn't in the audience section.
• 4:36
SPEAKER_06: I was actually off to the side of the stage.
• 4:38
SPEAKER_06: Someone had invited me to the side of the stage.
• 4:40
SPEAKER_06: So I actually saw her walking, walking by, you know, um, right before getting on stage or, you know, uh beginning the performance.
• 4:50
SPEAKER_06: She was walking towards the stage and I was like, break a leg, Gloria.
• 4:54
SPEAKER_06: And then she looks to the side, she waves, looks down, and then looks to the side again, like, wait, what the hell are you doing here?
• 5:03
SPEAKER_06: Um, it was an interesting way to see the the concert.
• 5:07
SPEAKER_06: I wouldn't want to do it again because I didn't get to enjoy the the energy of the audience, and but it was cool to to experience that, you know, for the first time.
• 5:15
SPEAKER_06: And I I saw it one other time.
• 5:17
  SPEAKER_06: Where did oh, Hollywood?
• 5:19
SPEAKER_06: Uh I mentioned that earlier.
• 5:21
SPEAKER_06: And and that was so hard rock is a casino, but what's interesting, and Rob, we've been to the you know casino shows.
• 5:29
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, right the cool thing about the hard rock is that it feels more like an arena, so it's not that same vibe as let's say Mohegan Sun or Foxwoods.
• 5:40
SPEAKER_06: So that was that was fun.
• 5:42
SPEAKER_06: And I think at that show she sang, oh, what was that Connie Francis song?
• 5:47
SPEAKER_06: Remember at that time she was there was Where the Boys Are.
• 5:49
  SPEAKER_06: Where the Boys Are.
• 5:50
  SPEAKER_06: She sang that.
• 5:51
SPEAKER_06: That's when there was the whole plan of her doing that movie, which unfortunately that never panned out.
• 5:57
  SPEAKER_06: But as we know.
• 5:58
SPEAKER_06: Thank you for for that this week in Gloria History, West, because that that took me back.
• 6:03
SPEAKER_02: We really we really got off topic.
• 6:05
SPEAKER_02: I didn't go to the date yet.
• 6:08
  SPEAKER_02: Oh, whoops.
• 6:09
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, we started talking about this week in Gloria History, October the 11th, 2008.
• 6:14
SPEAKER_02: Gloria performed at the Aruba 7th annual music festival this week.
• 6:21
SPEAKER_06: I wanted to go to that one, but it was way too expensive.
• 6:25
SPEAKER_02: It was our second time performing in Aruba.
• 6:27
SPEAKER_02: Aruba, the end of the light tour, took um went to Aruba.
• 6:33
SPEAKER_06: Well, Wes, thank you for this week in Gloria History.
• 6:38
SPEAKER_06: We we gotta bring on Rob.
• 6:40
SPEAKER_06: Robbie, go ahead and play some music.
• 6:42
  SPEAKER_06: Let the music play.
• 6:43
  SPEAKER_06: Let's do it.
• 6:47
SPEAKER_06: Our guest today is a singer, songwriter, producer, and powerhouse vocalist whose career has taken him from center stage to behind the scenes, working alongside some of the biggest names in Latin and pop music.
• 7:00
SPEAKER_06: He's written, produced, and performed with an incredible list of artists.
• 7:05
SPEAKER_06: And of course, he's also shared the stage with the reason we're all here, Gloria Stefan.
• 7:11
SPEAKER_06: His work has extended into the world of queer and drag music, collaborating with artists including Pablo Vittar, Morphine Love Dion, and Tsunami Muse.
• 7:21
SPEAKER_06: But today we want to go behind the credits and get to know the person behind all that music, where he came from, how he found his voice, and the journey that brought him to where he is today.
• 7:33
SPEAKER_06: Robbie, welcome to Let It Loose.
• 7:36
  SPEAKER_07: What an intro.
• 7:39
SPEAKER_07: Yeah, my self-esteem just went up.
• 7:41
  SPEAKER_07: Thank you.
• 7:43
  SPEAKER_07: I love it.
• 7:44
SPEAKER_07: I am so excited that I mean, we're so excited that you're here.
• 7:49
  SPEAKER_06: Me too.
• 7:50
  SPEAKER_03: Me too.
• 7:50
SPEAKER_03: You know, it's funny when you hear things that you've done as an artist, like it's really easy to like, you know, feel like you're you've never you've never succeeded as much as you want to.
• 8:01
SPEAKER_03: And then when you hear stuff back, you're like, God, I've come a long way.
• 8:04
SPEAKER_03: You know what I mean?
• 8:05
  SPEAKER_03: Like I've done a lot.
• 8:06
  SPEAKER_03: I've done that.
• 8:06
SPEAKER_06: Listen, you are kicking ass.
• 8:09
  SPEAKER_06: You are killing it.
• 8:11
SPEAKER_06: I since since we saw you, because we, you know, we most of us here in in Let It Loose Land, we came to know you because of the work that you did with Gloria.
• 8:22
SPEAKER_06: But ever since I started following you and seeing what you've done outside of that world, I have enjoyed the ride and I love everything that you put out there.
• 8:34
SPEAKER_06: I love I'm gonna share something that I've never shared with you before.
• 8:38
SPEAKER_06: Let it out because you are you are an unfiltered individual.
• 8:43
SPEAKER_06: And if you have something in your mind, you are going to you're not gonna hold back and you're gonna say it.
• 8:48
SPEAKER_06: And I freaking love that shit.
• 8:50
SPEAKER_06: So in the morning, if I see that Robbie Elias has uh posted a video, a real, and that he's unfiltered, he's having an unfiltered moment.
• 9:01
SPEAKER_06: I pause it, I go downstairs, get my cafecito, get back in my my bed, and I'm ready.
• 9:08
SPEAKER_06: I'm ready to listen to Robbie Let It Loose.
• 9:12
SPEAKER_06: So thank you for that.
• 9:13
SPEAKER_06: Thank you for just thank you for just you know being yourself and sharing, you know, some most of the things that you have shared, if not all.
• 9:22
SPEAKER_06: It's you know, sometimes you you speak about the injustices of whether it's the world or the industry, and you you just lay it out there.
• 9:33
SPEAKER_06: And I'm glad that you do because I feel like the things that you have shared are things that people usually you know tuck under the rug and don't talk about.
• 9:43
  SPEAKER_06: So I appreciate you.
• 9:46
SPEAKER_06: I mean, you have no idea how much I appreciate, and I'm sure all of your follow uh followers do this, you know, feel the same way.
• 9:52
SPEAKER_03: I think the the people that the people that follow me love me because I am like that.
• 9:56
SPEAKER_03: And even though my manager is like over it, she's like, you need to show after like after the FIFA fiasco, she was like, You need to just shh and which I understand, but at the same time, like I hate injustice, like I just hate injustice.
• 10:11
SPEAKER_03: I like I it makes me boil inside when I when I feel like something is happening around me that is just wrong.
• 10:21
SPEAKER_03: So I've just always always been like that.
• 10:23
  SPEAKER_01: Well, you know what?
• 10:24
SPEAKER_01: Like managers are gonna feel some type of way about that, but the one voice that does that, that does speak out, creates such a ripple effect for the other voices that are too scared to yet.
• 10:34
SPEAKER_01: So what you're doing will will have ripple effects for for sure decades.
• 10:38
SPEAKER_03: No, and I think also like I mean, being like a a queer artist, like I I feel like I have a responsibility to just talk about things and be honest and be transparent and be real.
• 10:51
  SPEAKER_03: So thank you.
• 10:52
  SPEAKER_01: Wait, you're gay?
• 10:53
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I know no idea.
• 10:56
  SPEAKER_01: Um breaking news.
• 10:58
  SPEAKER_01: Breaking news.
• 11:01
SPEAKER_03: That's what we want to hear from an artist.
• 11:03
  SPEAKER_03: We want to hear.
• 11:04
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, for a long time, like I wasn't I've never been the person that was like uh ashamed of that, even when I was little, like I was like, what are you gonna do?
• 11:13
  SPEAKER_03: Stop loving me.
• 11:14
SPEAKER_03: I would tell my parents, and they would just swallow it.
• 11:17
SPEAKER_03: And so I'm lucky that I had a a very supportive family, at least I mean, to my face.
• 11:22
SPEAKER_03: I don't know what they say behind my back, but you know, I I don't know.
• 11:26
SPEAKER_03: I've just always kind of been like that.
• 11:27
SPEAKER_03: I've always been kind of spicy.
• 11:29
SPEAKER_06: You know, it I like it.
• 11:31
SPEAKER_06: It this kind of leads us into, you know, we're gonna dive right in, we're gonna dive into the beginning.
• 11:37
SPEAKER_06: So before we get into everything you've done in music, take us all the way back.
• 11:43
SPEAKER_06: Where did you grow up and what was your childhood like?
• 11:46
  SPEAKER_03: Wow.
• 11:47
SPEAKER_03: Um, I grew up in Miami, Florida.
• 11:50
SPEAKER_03: Um, my family was a very musical family.
• 11:54
SPEAKER_03: My grandmother, my great-grandmother were music teachers in Cuba.
• 11:58
SPEAKER_03: My mother played piano and guitar, my father played the drums, my grandfather wrote records for artists in Cuba.
• 12:05
SPEAKER_03: Um, it was kind of something that was like really inside of me um since I was little.
• 12:12
SPEAKER_03: Um and I grew up, you know, in Little Havana.
• 12:16
  SPEAKER_03: In Little Havana, yeah.
• 12:17
SPEAKER_03: I mean, that was my hood.
• 12:20
  SPEAKER_03: That was my hood.
• 12:20
SPEAKER_03: My grandparents, my grandmothers really they helped raise me a lot.
• 12:25
SPEAKER_03: So I have like a very um I love women.
• 12:28
SPEAKER_03: I love women, I love strong, powerful women.
• 12:31
SPEAKER_03: I I gravitate towards them um because they were kind of like the people that I looked up to growing up.
• 12:38
SPEAKER_03: Um, I love my dad, God bless him, but he was, you know, he was kind of a crappy father.
• 12:43
SPEAKER_03: So um, you know, I think that the women in my family definitely were like very, very, very special and helped mold me.
• 12:53
SPEAKER_03: And um, I think that that's part of the reason why like I had the the balls to even go after my dreams because they were always supporting me.
• 13:03
SPEAKER_03: Because my mother always wanted to do it and she never got to.
• 13:06
SPEAKER_03: So she was always like, Go, like, if you want to do this, go, go, go, go.
• 13:10
  SPEAKER_03: I was a very eccentric kid.
• 13:12
SPEAKER_03: I was um always singing, always making my brother and sister like do like put on plays with me.
• 13:18
SPEAKER_03: Um, I was, I mean, I feel like I was probably a little bit annoying, but um my dad would always try to put me in sports, and I would be like, why, like, why?
• 13:29
  SPEAKER_03: Like, because I'm Paul.
• 13:31
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think well, but and now looking back, I'm like, he just didn't know what to do.
• 13:37
  SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, you know?
• 13:39
SPEAKER_03: So, and I always joke with my mom that I would have been much more famous if she would have put me in like classes earlier or something.
• 13:46
SPEAKER_03: But um, yeah, my my family, I feel like I had a good family overall.
• 13:50
SPEAKER_01: So they were very musical, as you said.
• 13:52
SPEAKER_01: Yes, but like when you were kicking it as a kid, like what were you listening to?
• 13:57
SPEAKER_01: Like, where did what were your influences like?
• 13:59
SPEAKER_03: Oh man, so my dad was a big like southern rock guy, a lot of Leonard Skinner, the Eagles, um, Boston, and then my mother was like disco, Donna Summer.
• 14:11
SPEAKER_03: I talked to Gloria about this actually, because she loves, I mean, Gloria loves Disco.
• 14:16
SPEAKER_03: Um, Donna Summer, I mean Barbara Streisand, and then I was a 90s kid.
• 14:20
SPEAKER_03: So I grew up listening to the big divas, Mariah, Whitney, a lot of RB, a lot of voice to men.
• 14:27
SPEAKER_03: Um, and then you know, I I had like my emo phase in middle school where it was like a lot of like who didn't alternative rock, like Lanis.
• 14:34
SPEAKER_03: And I think that I mean, I I love the the rocky kind of side of my voice.
• 14:39
SPEAKER_03: Like in in my tribute to pop, I get to use that a lot because I love singing rock and roll.
• 14:43
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I I definitely feel like my era that influenced me the most was that like 90s, even like I mean, obviously Gloria.
• 14:52
SPEAKER_01: I was obsessed with John Cicata because I was like, I'm here, and he has that rocket in his voice, he has that rasp.
• 14:59
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, he's always had he's always had like cojones in his voice, yeah, yeah.
• 15:03
SPEAKER_03: But I had I had never seen like somebody that was from where I was from that sang his ass off, you know what I mean?
• 15:10
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, wrote songs.
• 15:11
SPEAKER_03: He was like a I mean, he was a big inspiration.
• 15:13
SPEAKER_03: I got to I got to work with him a few times.
• 15:16
SPEAKER_03: Um but yeah, that was my my definitely my music molding era for sure.
• 15:22
  SPEAKER_03: In the 90s.
• 15:24
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, something for us all for sure.
• 15:26
SPEAKER_02: When did music go from something you loved to something you realized you could actually make a career out of?
• 15:33
SPEAKER_03: You know, it's funny because even in high school, like I I wouldn't want to join the choir.
• 15:39
SPEAKER_03: I I would sing at like shows and stuff, like talent shows, and I would just go and do my own thing.
• 15:45
SPEAKER_03: But I was always kind of like, like even with my family, like it I was always a little bit like not shy, but I I I wasn't like the teenager that was like singing all the time.
• 16:02
SPEAKER_03: But I would I want to say, like, maybe when I dropped out of college, um, and I was like, I can't do this, I can't do this nine to five thing.
• 16:11
SPEAKER_03: Like, what am I gonna do?
• 16:12
SPEAKER_03: Be a an attorney, like be an English teacher, like no, like I music is what I want to do.
• 16:18
SPEAKER_03: And so I maybe like when I was like 20, 21, when I dropped out of FIU and was like, I'm gonna just pursue music.
• 16:26
SPEAKER_03: Um, I would say around that time is when I was like, okay, I'm gonna do this.
• 16:31
SPEAKER_03: And then when I really started to realize that I could make money, was it was I had landed the first the first cut with Cheyenne, which was um El Hombre que fui, which was a song on his album No Impossibles, and I had gotten that cut and I met um Julio Reyes Copelo through that, big producer, and he called me to do background vocals for Ricky's project, for Alejandro San's project.
• 17:01
SPEAKER_03: So I I I kind of like saw that I could make money singing, and then from there I started like auditioning for like cover bands and started like singing around Miami.
• 17:10
SPEAKER_03: So I think yeah, I I want to say that it was around that time when I was like, shit, I could do this.
• 17:18
SPEAKER_06: But how did you get that first gig with with Cheyenne?
• 17:21
SPEAKER_06: Like, how did that happen?
• 17:22
SPEAKER_03: Uh I tell you that I went to every bar and every club that there was live music at in Miami, and I would just I started meeting like like indie songwriters in the Latin pop industry.
• 17:34
SPEAKER_03: I don't even know, I don't even know how I met some of these people actually.
• 17:38
  SPEAKER_03: I can't even remember now.
• 17:39
SPEAKER_03: But it was his name was Carlos Sayas, and he happened to be friends with Cheyenne's manager, and he was like, Hey, they're looking for songs.
• 17:46
SPEAKER_03: And I went to at that time I was playing in a band, and my guitarist, Chris Alvey, I went to his house, we wrote the song in the backyard, we made a demo and we sent it.
• 17:56
SPEAKER_03: And like in two days, they were like, Yeah, Cheyenne's gonna cut the song.
• 17:59
  SPEAKER_03: That's wild.
• 18:00
  SPEAKER_03: It was wild.
• 18:01
SPEAKER_03: It was like it was really fast and really random because I don't even talk to a lot of those people anymore, like those like songwriters that I met in my early days.
• 18:10
SPEAKER_01: Um but it's interesting because you're so young, but it's it's such an old school way that you worked your way up, like you really hustled and like hit the pavement.
• 18:21
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was very gradual, such a mirror to like the Estefan story, also like the way they were pounding on doors in those early days.
• 18:30
SPEAKER_03: I've talked to Emilio about it a few times, and um I I I really have fought for a lot that I've had.
• 18:41
SPEAKER_03: And like even like auditioning for bands and stuff, like I was so tall, I was just I stood out, you know.
• 18:48
SPEAKER_03: I was tall, I was like a little bit flamboyant.
• 18:51
SPEAKER_03: Um people didn't know how to like really um I don't know, like if they were gonna put me in a band with like other singers, like I would stand out like a sore thumb.
• 19:03
SPEAKER_03: Um, it wasn't an I had to really prove myself.
• 19:06
SPEAKER_03: I mean that's pretty much like what it was.
• 19:09
SPEAKER_03: I had to prove myself to over and over and over again.
• 19:12
SPEAKER_03: I still feel that way sometimes, now less than before.
• 19:15
SPEAKER_03: But yeah, I've I've I've had to to fight for for what I what I have for sure.
• 19:21
SPEAKER_02: And what a perfect place to grow up in Miami.
• 19:23
SPEAKER_02: So you have these opportunities to yeah.
• 19:26
SPEAKER_03: I don't think if I would have been in another city, because Miami was, I mean, the Latin pop industry is here, yeah.
• 19:32
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure.
• 19:36
SPEAKER_02: So so now we're gonna get into Gloria.
• 19:40
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, do you know her in the Miami sandwiches?
• 19:43
  SPEAKER_03: Do I know I do now?
• 19:46
SPEAKER_03: You know, it's funny because I didn't it I always felt in my bones because you know, when you're singer, everybody's like, Oh, you have to meet Gloria and Emilio.
• 19:54
SPEAKER_03: What why don't you try to find them or contact them?
• 19:56
SPEAKER_03: And I just and I was always obviously I loved Gloria, but like I it I mean, I had done so much in my career when I started working with her and Emilio, but um, I met Emilio first, and um he I got a call to like do demos, and then him and I really clicked.
• 20:16
SPEAKER_03: Like, I really, really, really love Emilio.
• 20:18
SPEAKER_03: And he kept calling me back, and I was like, you hold on, because eventually you're gonna work with Gloria, which is what I wanted.
• 20:24
SPEAKER_03: I wanted to like work with Gloria.
• 20:25
SPEAKER_03: I really respected her, I wanted to see what it was like behind the scenes with her.
• 20:30
SPEAKER_03: Um, and yeah, it and it happened.
• 20:34
  SPEAKER_03: It happened.
• 20:35
  SPEAKER_03: And here we are.
• 20:36
SPEAKER_02: What did their music mean to you before your paths crossed?
• 20:40
SPEAKER_03: Um, baby, I mean I I mean, obviously, being from Miami, you see, you know, people that are just like you that are doing what you want to do on this grand level.
• 20:53
SPEAKER_03: But I mean, I I want to say that like the first time that I heard coming out of the dark, I almost had like some sort of like religious experience.
• 21:04
SPEAKER_03: Um, to me, it's my favorite Gloria song.
• 21:07
SPEAKER_03: It is I'm I'm actually singing it at an event next week on Friday, like just you know and vocals.
• 21:12
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, if I get video, I'll send it to you guys.
• 21:14
  SPEAKER_03: But um, yes, please.
• 21:15
SPEAKER_03: That song changed my life, and I think that's when I was like, Yeah, she's a songwriter.
• 21:22
  SPEAKER_03: She is, she's I mean, I don't I was obsessed with her.
• 21:25
SPEAKER_03: I was obsessed with her.
• 21:26
SPEAKER_03: So even being here now, still now that I'm thinking about it, I'm like, oh my god, I'm here.
• 21:30
  SPEAKER_03: Like, this is wild.
• 21:31
SPEAKER_03: But yeah, that was the moment that I was like, fuck, I love Gloria, I love Gloria because I was horrified before, like, I was scared as a kid of like the rhythm is gonna get you video.
• 21:41
SPEAKER_06: Oh my god, me too.
• 21:43
  SPEAKER_03: I was horrified.
• 21:45
SPEAKER_06: Like horrified that I was some people don't understand.
• 21:47
  SPEAKER_06: Wes does not understand.
• 21:49
SPEAKER_06: I shared that, I shared that on a previous episode, and it it wasn't necessarily just the video, it was just the the the concept of the song that this this rhythm something by the The name of Rhythm is gonna come and get me.
• 22:02
SPEAKER_06: But you know the original part of me was interesting, and we found this out years later.
• 22:09
SPEAKER_06: The original concept for that song was not rhythm is gonna get you, it was it was boogeyman is gonna get you.
• 22:17
SPEAKER_06: So it makes sense why you know a child.
• 22:19
SPEAKER_03: The video was spooky, it was like it was neon, and like it was like I felt like I don't know, I it was like like it seemed like a cave.
• 22:27
  SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
• 22:28
SPEAKER_03: It was it was spooky back then.
• 22:29
SPEAKER_07: Now I see it as I'm glad we're on the same page though, because Wes I see you'd hell out of me for mentioning.
• 22:39
SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, I've grew up with VH1.
• 22:41
SPEAKER_02: So I would say I was like six, seven years old when well when rhythm is gonna get you came out.
• 22:47
SPEAKER_02: I was only three, but you know, when VH1 was popular and I was like seven, eight years old.
• 22:52
  SPEAKER_02: I I that's all we watched, right?
• 22:55
SPEAKER_02: You're braver than never never was scared by a music video.
• 22:59
SPEAKER_06: So that's why when that comedian recently, I don't know if you guys have seen that comedian that talks exactly, you know, talks about this, shares how he's you know was scared from and he does like a dramatic reading of the lyrics and he goes, Yeah, you're right.
• 23:12
  SPEAKER_07: I feel so obscene.
• 23:14
SPEAKER_07: I need to send it to me.
• 23:16
SPEAKER_07: I'll send you, I'll send you the clip.
• 23:17
SPEAKER_07: But that's and it's so we're not the only ones, is what you're saying.
• 23:20
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, people group traumatized, apparently.
• 23:23
SPEAKER_06: So so Robbie, eventually you went from uh from knowing Gloria's music to actually working with her.
• 23:29
SPEAKER_06: How did that first opportunity come about?
• 23:31
SPEAKER_06: And what do you remember about your first experience working with her?
• 23:35
SPEAKER_03: Um gosh, when was it?
• 23:38
  SPEAKER_03: I think it was.
• 23:38
SPEAKER_03: I mean, after I had already worked with Emilio for I mean, maybe like a year, um, the time came for her to they had she had finished Raises.
• 23:50
  SPEAKER_03: And I mean, I was close.
• 23:52
SPEAKER_03: I was working with Claudia a lot in the studio.
• 23:54
SPEAKER_03: So her and I became close.
• 23:55
SPEAKER_03: She's so sweet, she's wonderful, and she's so she's she's so the opposite of what I am because I'm like street, you know, like I'm not technically plain, I'm like pure emotion, pure soul.
• 24:04
SPEAKER_03: And she's like, she's the one that like puts us in line, you know.
• 24:07
SPEAKER_03: Like she's like, This is your harmony, like, figure it out.
• 24:09
SPEAKER_03: And then I'm like, okay, yeah, because it's all by ear.
• 24:12
SPEAKER_03: But I had been working in the studio a lot with Emilio and Claudia, and I mean, Jose uh called me and was like, Um, Emilio wants to know if you would like to sing Back Up for Gloria.
• 24:26
SPEAKER_03: And I mean, obviously, I said yes right away.
• 24:29
  SPEAKER_03: I didn't even think about it.
• 24:30
SPEAKER_03: I was like, Yes, yes, let's do it.
• 24:34
SPEAKER_03: And yeah, I mean, it was honestly as simple as that.
• 24:38
SPEAKER_03: I think I what I like about Emilio is that he's he I feel like he was testing me almost.
• 24:44
SPEAKER_03: Like he was like making sure that I had that I was a a decent human being, um, and B, that I had the work ethic to to be a part of of the Miami sound machine because everybody in that band is a badass.
• 24:58
SPEAKER_03: Like everybody, yeah, there's not one musician or or any of the girls that sing with me that I mean are mid, like everybody there is incredible.
• 25:09
SPEAKER_03: So absolutely, I was like, okay, I gotta set my pussy up, let's go.
• 25:13
SPEAKER_06: Like, you know, so uh we had Glavia here uh recently, and she mentioned that the MSc cruise inauguration that was her first gig.
• 25:24
SPEAKER_06: Did were you there for for that gig?
• 25:28
SPEAKER_06: Or did you come after it was it was a cruise ship of the MSC?
• 25:32
SPEAKER_03: Oh no, no, I didn't do that.
• 25:34
SPEAKER_03: My first gig with Gloria.
• 25:35
SPEAKER_03: My first gig with Gloria was I think in in Spain.
• 25:40
SPEAKER_01: I want to for in like for Denerife?
• 25:42
  SPEAKER_01: Denerife.
• 25:43
SPEAKER_06: I don't uh I need I would need to look, I don't know because I I remember you being in in Madrid, but by the time that we went to Madrid, you you were already doing stuff with uh with her.
• 25:53
SPEAKER_06: I just what it was.
• 25:55
SPEAKER_03: What was the first show that I did?
• 25:57
SPEAKER_06: It's funny because as fans, we we know all of the the background, you know.
• 26:02
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, uh uh Giselle, Duque, um uh Cheito.
• 26:08
SPEAKER_06: Yeah back in the day it was Rita Rita Quintero, George Noriega.
• 26:14
SPEAKER_06: So then all of a sudden, this Robbie alias comes out and we're like yeah.
• 26:22
SPEAKER_03: I I I like to joke that I'm like uh the youngest member of the Mammy family.
• 26:28
  SPEAKER_03: Um I don't I honestly I don't remember what the first gig was.
• 26:32
SPEAKER_03: I need to I'll research it and I'll let you know.
• 26:34
SPEAKER_03: But the one that stands out to me as like the the first time that I sang with her was it, I think in I want to say it was in Spain for sure.
• 26:42
SPEAKER_03: I mean, I think I think you were at the Tenerife, yeah.
• 26:48
SPEAKER_06: I want to say it was maybe yeah, so um I I do have a question, but before I ask you this question, give us the laundry list of artists that you have worked with.
• 26:59
SPEAKER_06: We already know Cheyenne, we know Gloria.
• 27:02
SPEAKER_03: Okay, um, so Cheyenne came first, then from Cheyenne I did Ricky's um um A quien quieres cuchar, which I that's I we that album won uh an American Grammy.
• 27:17
SPEAKER_03: Then from there I worked with Alejandro Sanz.
• 27:21
SPEAKER_03: We recorded um uh um fuck, what's the name of the album?
• 27:28
SPEAKER_03: Um it has like no me compares on it, but anyways, we did 11 songs in his house.
• 27:33
SPEAKER_03: Me, him, Julio Reyes Cupelo, Jackie Mendez.
• 27:36
SPEAKER_03: Um I've never smoked so many Marlboro Reds in my life.
• 27:41
  SPEAKER_03: Uh chimney.
• 27:43
SPEAKER_03: Um so Alejandro Sanz, then from Alejandro, I uh auditioned.
• 27:48
SPEAKER_03: Um I was given the opportunity to audition for Don Omar.
• 27:54
SPEAKER_03: Went on like a mini tour with Don Omar, which was the stories.
• 27:59
SPEAKER_03: I mean, I've I was like at strip clubs, it was wild, it was wild.
• 28:04
SPEAKER_03: Wow, wow, and then after Don Omar, I started getting like the street cred.
• 28:10
SPEAKER_03: And then I I I knew the MD of uh Daddy Yankee, and he was like, Look, like he's auditioning a singer, he needs somebody to sing this facito on stage every night.
• 28:22
SPEAKER_03: And he was like, Do you think that you would be interested?
• 28:24
SPEAKER_03: But you have to learn all the reggaetong stuff, all the all the everything, because you would also be doubling him on everything.
• 28:32
  SPEAKER_03: Oh wow.
• 28:33
SPEAKER_03: At that time, like me and reggaeton had after the Don O Martin, I was like, This is no, like I was like, I never want to do this again.
• 28:43
SPEAKER_03: And anyways, I ended up auditioning, and um I auditioned with with uh this I sang Despacito and then I had to sing Rompe with like with a track or like to a track, and I got the and I got the gig.
• 28:59
SPEAKER_03: And um, I was with Yankee, I mean, I've I was with him until the last tour, which was his retirement tour, which now he released another album.
• 29:09
SPEAKER_03: Um, but I was with him for like six, seven years, yeah, as his main background vocalist.
• 29:14
SPEAKER_06: Um the reason why I ask, you know, about all these artists that that you've worked with, you know, what is in comparison to all of them, what is distinctive about working with Gloria?
• 29:27
SPEAKER_06: Oh my god, compared to to all these others.
• 29:30
SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, I would tour Gloria for the rest of my life.
• 29:33
SPEAKER_03: First of all, the fact that like I'm actually singing with singers next to me.
• 29:39
SPEAKER_06: Like whoa, what do you what do you mean by that?
• 29:41
SPEAKER_03: Well, like I mean with with Daddy Yankee, like I love him, but like you, I was singing with like like, for example, like the other the other background singer was um chant like chanteo, so like very like they're not singers, so like for me, it wasn't like we were like sitting and like harmonizing and working, it was like who can be the loudest, and I was not here for that.
• 30:07
  SPEAKER_03: Um, interesting.
• 30:09
SPEAKER_03: It also like the regetong Latin world is it's just it's a mess, it's unorganized, it's you're over it.
• 30:19
  SPEAKER_03: It's yeah, it's just I'm Gloria.
• 30:21
SPEAKER_03: Working with Gloria is like you're working with like a general market like pop icon, you know, you're working with somebody who's like like respect respected like musically, you know what I mean.
• 30:35
SPEAKER_06: I think Glaudia had mentioned that it's it's almost like taking a master class or something like that.
• 30:39
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I learned I learn a lot.
• 30:41
SPEAKER_03: I feel like with Yankee, I was like kind of dumbing myself down.
• 30:46
SPEAKER_03: I hate saying that because I I really no, but I get it.
• 30:49
  SPEAKER_03: I I yeah, but I wasn't learning anything, yeah.
• 30:52
SPEAKER_02: Like you knocked to them, it's like you're you're I mean, you're comparing one of the greatest artists of all time and performers, and you know, correct to I mean, there's you can't really compare them, you know what I'm saying?
• 31:06
SPEAKER_02: Like just the logistics, though, guys.
• 31:08
SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm yeah, what you're gonna glory step on.
• 31:10
SPEAKER_02: It's it's very, very different from anything else.
• 31:12
SPEAKER_03: Like, you are I'm so taken care of when I'm with them, you know what I mean?
• 31:18
  SPEAKER_03: They're everybody's in a good mood.
• 31:19
SPEAKER_03: There's not like you're not stuck at airports for 19 hours, you know what I mean?
• 31:23
SPEAKER_01: Like you're part of a well-oiled machine in this case, right?
• 31:27
  SPEAKER_01: Correct, yeah, correct.
• 31:28
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so you've been you begin working with the Estefans, you start to get to know them beyond their public persona, beyond the sort of glitz and glamour and everything.
• 31:37
SPEAKER_01: What surprised you the most or changed the way you viewed um Gloria and Emilio once you got to know them better?
• 31:44
  SPEAKER_03: Their sense of humor.
• 31:46
SPEAKER_03: They are funny as well.
• 31:47
SPEAKER_03: They they are so funny, they are so they I don't if honestly, if they had a reality show, it would be a dream come true.
• 31:54
SPEAKER_03: They wouldn't probably do that.
• 31:56
SPEAKER_03: But they are they are seeing seeing even separate because when you put them together, they're hilarious, but separate, they're both really funny.
• 32:04
SPEAKER_03: Like Gloria has a really dark sense of humor.
• 32:06
SPEAKER_03: She's she's a potty mouth, they are just so real, and then Emilio, like they're so real.
• 32:12
SPEAKER_03: Um he he has told me some stories, and I'm like, I don't think you should have told me this, Emilio.
• 32:16
SPEAKER_03: But like this stuff, you know, they're just they're they're so real and they're so funny, and I I love that about them because they are really, really solid human beings, and you know, it's funny because I feel like in growing up, I mean if in Miami, like people would say you would hear negative things about them too.
• 32:40
SPEAKER_03: You know what I mean?
• 32:41
SPEAKER_03: And I've never obviously I didn't know them, so I would never engage with that kind of um talk, but like people would say things about them, and they have totally completely shown me that they are the complete opposite of anything that anything negative because they're wonderful.
• 33:02
  SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
• 33:03
SPEAKER_06: And I know and I get exactly, you know, I I was born and raised in Miami, you know.
• 33:08
SPEAKER_06: Uh I moved out of there just uh three years ago.
• 33:11
SPEAKER_06: So I know exactly what you're talking about.
• 33:13
SPEAKER_06: And I feel it's just you know, haters that don't know, you know, that are reading either headlines, especially now, you know, and I think that's one of the reasons I've mentioned this.
• 33:22
SPEAKER_06: This is that's one of the reasons why I decided to sign up and do this show is because especially now in the age of social media, everyone has an opinion.
• 33:32
SPEAKER_06: And 99% of the time, those opinions are not close to even being correct, you know.
• 33:38
SPEAKER_06: So some of the things that we as fans, and at this point, friends, you know, read about her or him or them or the family, it's like, no, boo, that's you got you got it all twisted.
• 33:52
SPEAKER_06: You got it all wrong.
• 33:53
SPEAKER_06: And if I could do a little bit, you know, she's so generous with the people that she works with, so generous with her fans, so generous with all of us.
• 34:01
SPEAKER_06: If there's something that I could contribute, you know, to to help people understand who they truly are, because they're amazing people, and you're you've witnessed that, you know, firsthand.
• 34:13
  SPEAKER_02: First hand.
• 34:14
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 34:15
SPEAKER_02: They have been I had no idea about all of that, the negativity of which I don't live, I didn't grow up in Miami, but um you know, growing up in Ohio, like she was the Miami sound machine.
• 34:27
SPEAKER_02: Like you people outside of Miami in my area think you know, Gloria's the queen of Miami.
• 34:32
SPEAKER_02: I mean, that she represents that city, and then she is here.
• 34:38
  SPEAKER_02: Is this legit?
• 34:39
SPEAKER_02: And then I can't read it because you know that'll set me off, and I'll I'll go off.
• 34:44
SPEAKER_04: You know, he gets he gets heated.
• 34:45
SPEAKER_02: I'll go off, and I'm like, I gotta get away from here because I can't uh I can't be saying the shit that I want to say because then I'll be red flagged.
• 34:53
  SPEAKER_01: But you know what?
• 34:54
SPEAKER_01: People are haters, and there's always gonna be haters gonna be whatever.
• 35:03
SPEAKER_03: That's how you know you made it.
• 35:05
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, that's right.
• 35:07
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but I will I I mean, now I I would defend them to the death.
• 35:12
SPEAKER_03: I mean, they are just wonderful, even Emily wonderful with me.
• 35:15
SPEAKER_03: And I mean, we have the same birthday, so we're like, so you're like two P's in a pod.
• 35:20
  SPEAKER_03: Love that, yeah.
• 35:21
SPEAKER_01: So what's the you know we get to know them as people, but they're also like musical legends, right?
• 35:27
SPEAKER_01: So I wanted to talk specifically about the tiny desk performance because you had a big part in that, you took a big part in that, and it was a really cool way to hear those songs sort of arranged in such a different way, like those really classic pop tunes that were kind of stripped down, that were reinvented, reconfigured.
• 35:48
SPEAKER_01: Do you remember what that process was like?
• 35:50
SPEAKER_03: And can you tell us anything about how the tiny desk rehearsals were intense because we literally went over all the songs and she wanted to make them different.
• 36:02
SPEAKER_03: Um and I remember when we got there, first of all, the there's no like sound, so like you're just sitting there singing like in a room, and there's like even Gloria had like a little mic in front of her, but it really is like there's there's there's no way to really hear like she I mean you hear the instruments right there, like it's very it's it was a very bizarre kind of setup.
• 36:27
SPEAKER_03: Um but yeah, the rehearsals were intense because she wanted to kind of change everything, especially Konga.
• 36:34
SPEAKER_03: I mean, we that quick the the speed up at the end of Conga.
• 36:38
SPEAKER_03: Come on, shake it, buddy.
• 36:39
  SPEAKER_03: Come on, shake it.
• 36:40
SPEAKER_03: We had that was it was even faster than that.
• 36:42
  SPEAKER_03: It was really quiet.
• 36:44
  SPEAKER_01: I can't imagine.
• 36:44
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I was like, girl, we can't sing.
• 36:46
SPEAKER_03: I was like, we can't sing that.
• 36:47
  SPEAKER_03: Like it's too fast.
• 36:49
SPEAKER_03: Um, so that was fun reimagining kind of those tunes.
• 36:54
SPEAKER_03: Um overall, honestly, it it ended up being such a fun experience because well, the fans that were there were were really, really freaking like hyped.
• 37:08
SPEAKER_03: But I also think that because we were we have we were forced to kind of like sing and play instruments together in such a small quarter, it was so intimate.
• 37:17
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's when I feel like even as the Miami Sound Machine and Gloria, we really kind of connected a lot because we had to lean on each other to like make it work, literally, yeah, literally, literally.
• 37:32
SPEAKER_03: Um yeah, I mean it was it was an amazing experience.
• 37:37
SPEAKER_03: I love love love the moment when I know exactly what you're gonna say.
• 37:43
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, when I say the Dali and she talks about it.
• 37:46
  SPEAKER_06: I I hope it's such a track, dude.
• 37:49
SPEAKER_06: You periodically post that reel because it brings me so much joy every time that you post it.
• 37:54
SPEAKER_03: Actually, Tuesday, Tuesday is the anniversary, so maybe I'll do a little post or something.
• 37:59
SPEAKER_03: I love that one, yeah.
• 38:01
SPEAKER_03: I think it was one year ago.
• 38:02
SPEAKER_03: One year, yeah, yeah, which is pretty cool.
• 38:05
SPEAKER_03: But that experience was amazing, amazing, amazing, amazing, amazing.
• 38:10
SPEAKER_03: So much fun, so much fun.
• 38:13
SPEAKER_03: And um, you know, it's sad because I think that they like took away all the MPR funding, right?
• 38:19
SPEAKER_01: Like they're like completely like they're oh yeah, that's you're absolutely right.
• 38:24
SPEAKER_01: We have not seen a tiny desk in quite some time.
• 38:27
SPEAKER_03: Uh they like have like um specific people that like donate money, you know, they're being funded by like private, private, yeah, like random I didn't even think about that stoning, yeah.
• 38:40
SPEAKER_03: Because before it used to be funded, I think, by the by the um the government.
• 38:45
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, not anymore, as we know.
• 38:49
SPEAKER_02: All right, let's get back into you as a songwriter and a producer.
• 38:52
SPEAKER_02: Okay, your career has allowed you to move between being a singer, songwriter, producer, and background vocalist.
• 39:00
SPEAKER_02: When you're creating for someone else, how do you figure out what part of yourself to bring into the music while still making it feel authentically like them?
• 39:12
SPEAKER_03: I think because I'm an artist first, I mean I'm a songwriter first, but because I'm an artist, I um I kind of see myself in other artists.
• 39:23
SPEAKER_03: Like working with like Pablo, for example, like I really try to like on every demo that we worked on for the album, I really try to like put myself in her shoes.
• 39:36
SPEAKER_03: What would how would she sing something?
• 39:38
SPEAKER_03: How would you gotta study who you're working with?
• 39:41
SPEAKER_03: You gotta you gotta really, really dig in.
• 39:43
SPEAKER_03: And I like that because even now I'm working on um a I mean I've been working now for I've written like 20 songs for a specific artist whose album is is in the process of being made who who I can't talk about, but I really dive into like the artist.
• 40:02
SPEAKER_03: Like I really I feel like I'm almost like invoking the artist.
• 40:06
SPEAKER_03: Um and I try to do that with every artist that I that I that I work with because it needs to be authentic to them.
• 40:14
SPEAKER_03: And they're always there's always gonna be a little piece of me in there.
• 40:18
SPEAKER_03: There's always gonna be a little piece of me, always.
• 40:20
SPEAKER_03: Just because I I really have studied pop music, I love it so much, and I don't think that you can create something wonderful that everybody will like if you don't know where music came from or like what came before it.
• 40:39
  SPEAKER_03: Like yeah, like I wouldn't be able to write a song for like I don't know, a Carol G if I didn't know Gloria's history.
• 40:49
SPEAKER_03: Like you need to know your references, you need to know where things came from, how something started.
• 40:54
SPEAKER_03: A lot of young songwriters now, they don't like they don't, they don't, they don't, they haven't studied pop music.
• 41:00
SPEAKER_03: Like they don't even know who Max Watch is or like who or like Emilio Stephon.
• 41:05
SPEAKER_03: They don't know like I think that's the concerning wild.
• 41:08
SPEAKER_06: That's that's something that I find concerning that this generation now, because listen, I was I was younger and I knew who the singers from the 50s and 60s were.
• 41:20
SPEAKER_06: I didn't live that time, but you know, I did uh I did the research and I was um you know I listened.
• 41:25
SPEAKER_06: And I feel like nowadays it's not the same.
• 41:28
SPEAKER_06: And people and and you know, the Glorias and Emilios, and you know, we don't hear about them as much as much as we should as we should.
• 41:39
  SPEAKER_06: Like these are pioneers.
• 41:41
SPEAKER_06: Like this is not just someone that recorded an album, and yeah, you know, these are pioneers of of this music of of our culture.
• 41:50
SPEAKER_06: So that that to me is a little concerning.
• 41:53
SPEAKER_06: And and I will do everything possible.
• 41:55
  SPEAKER_06: I think that's why we're here.
• 41:57
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, that I think everyone here will do everything to make sure to continue highlighting what they brought to the table.
• 42:03
  SPEAKER_03: I love that too.
• 42:04
SPEAKER_03: And and one another big thing that I find that even when it comes to like language, right?
• 42:14
SPEAKER_03: Like when I was earlier on in the industry, when I was like fighting, you know, to try to like you know, release music in both languages, like even that was like a big deal.
• 42:27
SPEAKER_03: And Gloria did that, like she did that before a lot of people even have the the balls to like change from from languages, you know what I mean?
• 42:36
SPEAKER_03: And she did it so easily.
• 42:38
SPEAKER_03: And I think that like for so for so long there wasn't like another artist that was really doing that.
• 42:45
SPEAKER_03: Um and for me at least, that was I mean something that I always looked up to her for because now it's very easy to like sing in Spanish and English and Korean, and you have like you know, K-pop, and you have like you know, you have despacito happen, and like, but there was a long time where like people didn't know where to fit like artists that were singing or bilingual, or you know, they didn't they didn't know, they didn't know what to do with us.
• 43:12
SPEAKER_02: Um that you know for sure, right?
• 43:17
  SPEAKER_02: For sure, yeah.
• 43:18
SPEAKER_03: And now people have access to so much more music than they I think they did before, right?
• 43:23
SPEAKER_03: Um, which is also kind of it can also be kind of a negative thing because there's so much music, um and there's so much crappy music.
• 43:33
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think as as a songwriter and producer, I think it's really important to know know where you came from, know where we're know where the genre came from, know where music came from, know where the artists absolutely.
• 43:46
SPEAKER_01: So I wanted to talk a little bit about um the business side of the industry because it is a side that you're really much a part of.
• 43:54
SPEAKER_01: Um, could you explain a little bit about your publishing deal with Warner and maybe tell people like my We don't really know what that world is like, what all of that entails, because it's something to be proud of.
• 44:04
  SPEAKER_03: So thank you.
• 44:05
SPEAKER_03: Um, it was a big stepping stone for me because now I am legitimate as a pop songwriter.
• 44:14
SPEAKER_03: And um so when I I I if we go back in time, when I landed the song with Cheyenne after that, and I started doing background vocals and vocal arrangements with all the artists that I told you about, then I started going on tour.
• 44:28
SPEAKER_03: I I left songwriting behind for other artists at least.
• 44:33
SPEAKER_03: I was still releasing my music and I would write songs, you know, um, all the time.
• 44:38
SPEAKER_03: But I left it like as a career.
• 44:41
SPEAKER_03: And when I got off tour with Yankee, I said, I need a break.
• 44:45
SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna focus on like, you know, my shows and I'm gonna focus on I wanna write songs.
• 44:52
SPEAKER_03: I wanna write songs for a living.
• 44:54
SPEAKER_03: And um I was introduced to my AR, Laz Hernandez, who I adore.
• 45:00
SPEAKER_03: Um, and I think he maybe like over the course of like while I was on tour with Yankee, we kind of like we would see each other at events, and he was always like interested in what my point of view, or like he would ask me questions like what are you doing now?
• 45:14
SPEAKER_03: Like we should you should get in the studio with this person, this person, and he would link me up with people randomly.
• 45:19
SPEAKER_03: And then I I finally was like, Hey, would would you I want to have a meeting?
• 45:26
SPEAKER_03: I have like this folder of just songs, and I want to kind of pick your brain on what you think.
• 45:34
SPEAKER_03: And he was like, Um, listen, it's uh it's a really tough industry right now.
• 45:39
SPEAKER_03: We're not really like giving advances.
• 45:42
SPEAKER_03: We are, you know, as and you're fresh, you know, you don't really haven't really done anything since the Cheyenne cut.
• 45:49
SPEAKER_03: Um, but I think that you have something special.
• 45:51
SPEAKER_03: And I was like, Okay, so what do you suggest?
• 45:55
SPEAKER_03: And he was like, Well, I could sign you right now, and I would go, and I go, Well, sign me right now.
• 46:00
  SPEAKER_03: Let's go.
• 46:01
SPEAKER_03: And he was like, Are you serious?
• 46:02
SPEAKER_03: And I was like, Yeah, sign me right now.
• 46:04
SPEAKER_03: I was like, I'm I want to go balls to the wall, let's just do it.
• 46:07
SPEAKER_03: Sign me because this is the only way that I'm gonna be able to start placing songs.
• 46:10
  SPEAKER_03: I love this.
• 46:12
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
• 46:12
SPEAKER_03: And um, so anyways, I ended up signing with Warner about a year ago, a year ago.
• 46:19
SPEAKER_03: And from uh yeah, since then I've placed, I mean, I've started to place songs.
• 46:24
SPEAKER_03: I mean, obviously, this Pablo album was big for me because now other writers are like, oh, I want to work with this guy who's working with Pablo.
• 46:33
SPEAKER_03: And I I want to say that like working with the drag queens really helped kind of create a niche market for myself because these girls on Drag Race, first of all, they're so much more talented than like anybody gives them credit for.
• 46:49
SPEAKER_03: And they also don't have a lot of access to work with producers and songwriters that are legitimate, that are really like, you know, really care and like are really in the industry.
• 47:00
SPEAKER_03: You know what I mean?
• 47:01
SPEAKER_03: Um, so I started doing that, and then you know, from from the morphine project, that's how um Gorky, who is Pablo's manager, reached out to Laz and he was like, Hey, I saw that you, you know, this kid is signed to Warner.
• 47:15
SPEAKER_03: He was like, Can you would he want to come to Brazil to write for the album?
• 47:19
SPEAKER_03: And so that's how I that's how I ended up getting the Pablo um opportunity.
• 47:25
SPEAKER_03: Um and yeah, and and now I have I'm working on a bunch of other songs and stuff like that.
• 47:30
SPEAKER_03: And now I, you know, I go to every time I go to London or I mean LA or New York, now I'm going to London soon to write there with songwriters.
• 47:37
SPEAKER_03: Um, because I want to do general, I want to do pop American pop, I mean English pop music, um, more than Latin.
• 47:43
SPEAKER_03: But um, I mean I want to do it all.
• 47:46
SPEAKER_03: But yeah, it's an interesting, I'm still learning.
• 47:49
SPEAKER_03: There's so much like on the business side, like it's so much fucking bullshit.
• 47:59
SPEAKER_03: And you have to, and then there's a lot of other like politics, you know, involved because there's bigger songwriters, and like how do you connect with those people?
• 48:06
SPEAKER_03: And then it's all who you know, and then what producers are are you know are popping right now?
• 48:12
SPEAKER_03: Can you get into a room with them?
• 48:14
SPEAKER_03: So it's a lot of um it's a different world, and but I I believe in myself, I believe in my songs.
• 48:22
SPEAKER_03: I I keep telling myself that I'm not gonna stop doing this just because it gets hard.
• 48:29
SPEAKER_03: Um and I don't know, I'm maybe I'm delusional, but I I'd rather be delusional and you know keep doing what I love.
• 48:38
  SPEAKER_03: So that's it.
• 48:40
SPEAKER_03: That's where I'm at right now with the songwriting.
• 48:42
SPEAKER_03: There's some cool stuff happening, but that's cool.
• 48:45
SPEAKER_03: But yeah, it's it's a different, it's a whole different monster, the songwriting publishing world.
• 48:51
SPEAKER_02: So you've also created your own live show called Tribute to Pop and even brought it to New York.
• 48:58
SPEAKER_02: Tell us about the show and how it developed and how listeners can see you live.
• 49:02
SPEAKER_03: Well, I started, I mean, like I told you guys, I used to sing in cover bands, but I'm talking about like shithole bars, like dive bars, like rock and roll, like like sweaty, greasy rock and roll shows for years.
• 49:19
  SPEAKER_03: Like for years.
• 49:20
SPEAKER_03: I would just sing wherever the hell I could.
• 49:22
SPEAKER_03: And I I like to say that that's where I got kind of like my my my backbone.
• 49:26
SPEAKER_03: Like anything can happen on stage, like a fucking light could fall, and I will not flinch.
• 49:31
SPEAKER_03: I will keep going, the show will go on.
• 49:32
SPEAKER_03: Like it is not it's it's taught it taught me a lot about my being having stage presence.
• 49:38
SPEAKER_03: Um I don't really get shy anymore.
• 49:42
SPEAKER_03: Um and from that I wanted to do an elevated version of that.
• 49:47
SPEAKER_03: Um and I had I started performing at Fayana with another band.
• 49:53
SPEAKER_03: And I was like, this could be so much better and gayer and and more glamorous and fun than what these like people are doing.
• 50:02
SPEAKER_03: So I I asked um the booking agent there, Richie, I was like, hey, would you want to put like me and my band like on a Thursday?
• 50:11
SPEAKER_03: And little by little we we started like uh being there more often.
• 50:17
SPEAKER_03: And uh I really connected with the the um a choreographer that was there, and who's now the the one that like helps me with my angels and the girls and the costumes and stuff.
• 50:27
  SPEAKER_03: She's kind of a creative director.
• 50:30
SPEAKER_03: I really connected with her and I was like, hey, like would you want like maybe we can see if like we can get a budget for the girls to be on stage with me?
• 50:37
SPEAKER_03: And then it just kind of became my thing.
• 50:39
SPEAKER_03: And I started making my my outfits, which I I've stopped for a little bit because they just they take too much time, but started making my outfits.
• 50:47
SPEAKER_03: We started like matching the outfits together.
• 50:49
SPEAKER_03: I would do like, you know, I would pull from like pop culture references.
• 50:54
SPEAKER_03: Um I do every every I'm not singing songs that like I don't love.
• 50:59
SPEAKER_03: Like every song that I that is in the show, I love it.
• 51:03
  SPEAKER_03: I love it.
• 51:04
SPEAKER_03: I um yeah, it's my little it's my little baby, and it's Fina has given me the opportunity to just kind of do whatever I want with it.
• 51:14
SPEAKER_03: Um, and the shows are really successful, a lot of fun.
• 51:17
SPEAKER_03: Then I went back, then I went to Fina, New York, which just opened.
• 51:20
SPEAKER_03: I I'm not sure when I'm going back because of my schedule, but um yeah, it's it's everything that I love about pop music.
• 51:30
SPEAKER_03: I I hope that people feel feel it when they when they leave the show.
• 51:35
SPEAKER_03: And I think it's I don't know, it's kind of fun to sing other people's songs through the Robbie filter, you know?
• 51:42
SPEAKER_06: Well, seeing seeing everything through that Robbie filter, I I have to ask because you like I said, I I follow you, I see everything that you're doing.
• 51:51
SPEAKER_06: When do you have time to just take a break?
• 51:53
SPEAKER_06: Because I you are like a workhorse, you don't stop right now, like chilling with you guys.
• 52:01
SPEAKER_03: My boyfriend's in the room, like napping.
• 52:04
SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, like Sundays are usually like I'll try to breathe a little bit.
• 52:09
SPEAKER_03: Um, but I just I have this like need inside of me to just not stop.
• 52:16
  SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
• 52:17
SPEAKER_03: I I feel like it almost like if I stop, like even if I'm sitting watching TV like on a normal night, I I'm flinching.
• 52:25
SPEAKER_03: I'm thinking about like what's gonna happen in 2029.
• 52:27
SPEAKER_03: Like it's why it's always I I've just always been like that.
• 52:31
SPEAKER_03: It's and I'm trying to be better about it because I do think that it's important to just relax.
• 52:36
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the older I get, the more I take like deep breaths, and the more I'm like, okay, it's gonna be fine.
• 52:42
  SPEAKER_03: You're you're doing great, sweetie.
• 52:44
  SPEAKER_03: You're gonna be okay.
• 52:45
SPEAKER_06: But there's no doubt that you are a go-getter.
• 52:48
SPEAKER_06: I mean, you are just constantly on the go.
• 52:50
SPEAKER_06: And I I see you practicing with your girls and this show and that show and the other, and writing, and I mean, you are truly uh you were dubbed, uh let me make sure that I get this right, the the Miami king of of Latin pop.
• 53:09
SPEAKER_03: Miami's King of Pop, yeah.
• 53:10
SPEAKER_03: Let's get just a long time ago.
• 53:13
SPEAKER_06: Oh you and and there's there's a reason for it.
• 53:17
SPEAKER_06: I mean, it's it's not only that you could sing, it's not only that you can write, it's just the the the workforce behind it all.
• 53:27
SPEAKER_06: And it's it's you you could tell that there's so much passion.
• 53:32
SPEAKER_06: And that's what I love about you, the the passion that you bring to to everything.
• 53:37
SPEAKER_06: Now, you know, we you kind of touched on the drag performance, uh, performers, morphine, tsunami muse.
• 53:44
SPEAKER_06: Um, so you've also worked with Pablo Vitaro, one of the biggest LGBTQ artists in the world.
• 53:51
SPEAKER_06: As a queer artist yourself, what does it mean to be part of this moment where LGBTQ and Latin artists are increasingly able to create music that celebrates their identities so openly?
• 54:03
SPEAKER_03: Um, I mean, it means the world, like I told you guys, I went to Brazil.
• 54:07
SPEAKER_03: I I didn't know what to expect, and the album was made by all Elizabeth Qua.
• 54:13
SPEAKER_03: Legibit qua Legibitek producers, songwriters, um, and artists.
• 54:19
SPEAKER_03: It was just the gayest, the gayest experience songwriting that I've ever had.
• 54:26
SPEAKER_03: Because, you know, it's really in this industry, I've been in a lot of rooms where you know, there's there's a lot of machismo in the Latin pop.
• 54:36
  SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
• 54:38
SPEAKER_03: Um sometimes you don't feel comfortable.
• 54:41
SPEAKER_03: Um, sometimes I don't feel like I could be fully myself or I'm restrained, you know, because I also think like as queer people, like we kind of like we kind of are the people that push pop culture forward, right?
• 54:55
SPEAKER_03: Like yes, I think the the the queer fan base for any like any diva, for example, like Gloria, right?
• 55:02
SPEAKER_03: Like her queer fan base is probably her her most important fan base because we are the people that we we all we're the people that I think connect the most with pop music and with especially female pop artists.
• 55:20
SPEAKER_03: But it was a really cool, really cool experience to go there and just write music with a bunch of I wanna I was gonna say a bad word, but a bunch of gays.
• 55:29
SPEAKER_03: Like it was just amazing.
• 55:30
SPEAKER_03: It was uh it was amazing, it was amazing.
• 55:34
SPEAKER_03: It was it was truly like I don't and and then we bonded too because I don't think any of us had ever really done something like that where it was just a bunch of of uh queens running around and just and we we we just felt free to do whatever and say whatever that we wanted, you know.
• 55:51
SPEAKER_03: So it was really special.
• 55:52
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that means a lot.
• 55:54
SPEAKER_03: That that moment meant a lot to me, and then to like have three songs on the album, which I never would have expected.
• 56:00
SPEAKER_03: Um, and the first single was, I mean, nuts, but also correct.
• 56:07
  SPEAKER_01: Love that.
• 56:08
SPEAKER_01: So, speaking specifically about the Robbie filter, as you said, um, how you incorporate all these different sounds into your tribute to pop.
• 56:16
SPEAKER_01: Let's imagine that there's a Gloria Stefan or Miami Sound Machine song that you've never performed with her, but you would love to make your own and turn up the rabbiness of it.
• 56:28
SPEAKER_01: Is there a song that is in her discography or their catalog that you have yet to perform?
• 56:35
SPEAKER_03: Well, I do I do a rhythm is gonna get you conga mix in my show.
• 56:39
SPEAKER_03: Um yeah, it's really fun and I love singing that, but I think I've always had a fantasy of singing real woman.
• 56:48
  SPEAKER_03: Of sitting woman.
• 56:53
SPEAKER_03: No, I mean I I have a an affinity to her to her ballads, like coming out of the dark, obviously.
• 57:00
SPEAKER_03: I I tell Amelia all the time, like, if what if there's ever a Globe Rebute, like please just let me sing that with like a huge choir behind me and I will promise I will make you so happy.
• 57:11
SPEAKER_03: But there's my mother when my parents got divorced, she recorded a on a cassette, she recorded a version of anything for you, and she left him the cassette and gave it to him.
• 57:29
  SPEAKER_03: Super depressing, I know.
• 57:30
SPEAKER_03: I told her but so I think that song I would love to like maybe take that song and like I don't know, maybe just modernize it maybe one day.
• 57:40
  SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
• 57:41
SPEAKER_03: There's something really, really, really special and and bittersweet and heartbreaking about that song because it's like yeah, you're saying I mean you're saying goodbye to somebody that you don't want to, and and so I always think of my mom when I hear that record.
• 57:57
SPEAKER_03: So maybe that one I would probably want to do.
• 57:59
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I love that record.
• 58:01
SPEAKER_06: I would love to hear that.
• 58:03
SPEAKER_03: Maybe I don't know, maybe I'll surprise you one day.
• 58:06
SPEAKER_02: So, what's next for Robbie?
• 58:08
SPEAKER_02: And where can everyone keep up with everything you're working on?
• 58:13
SPEAKER_03: You can follow me at Robbie Alias Official on Instagram.
• 58:16
  SPEAKER_03: I'm very highly active.
• 58:18
SPEAKER_03: Um, next for me, I I mean, well, I mean, I leave to Monaco next week.
• 58:22
SPEAKER_03: We we've been taking the the tribute to pop all around the world, so um, that's been keeping me busy.
• 58:28
SPEAKER_03: Uh, next for me, I'm I'm not gonna stop again.
• 58:33
SPEAKER_03: I'm delusional, but I really want to have a number one record like with someone I wanna I I would love to just be able to live off writing songs and producing um artists.
• 58:45
SPEAKER_03: And um I I hate saying like maybe like giving artists that I believe in maybe the opportunity or younger artists the opportunities that maybe I never had, or or people like I like I do with the drag queens, like writing music for people that don't maybe have as much access to music, but they are talented.
• 59:06
SPEAKER_03: Um but it's definitely I see myself definitely uh elevating this show that I have.
• 59:15
SPEAKER_03: I would love to maybe even one day like put it into a theater and maybe like have some sort of storyline.
• 59:22
SPEAKER_03: Um but it's right now my my biggest goal is I'm really working towards having a I mean I I want a big hit record, yeah.
• 59:34
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah with an artist.
• 59:37
SPEAKER_03: I mean it it could be I mean I have a lot I'm working with a bunch of people, like I said right now, but yeah, it would just it would be really validating to me to have a song that I wrote be sung by millions and millions of people and be recognized for that.
• 59:56
  SPEAKER_03: That would be amazing.
• 59:58
SPEAKER_01: This is how I know that you've been bitten by the Emilio Estefan bug because the what's next, anybody else would have been like, oh, I'm gonna be here, I'm gonna be there, and like give you like kind of a short synopsis.
• 1:00:13
SPEAKER_01: You know, Emilio signs his autographs a lot with Dare to Dream, and you just laid out a 10-year plan in a what's next for Robbie, and you are dreaming such incredible dreams, and you know what?
• 1:00:24
SPEAKER_01: And that's what we love.
• 1:00:26
SPEAKER_01: That's what aspect is there.
• 1:00:27
SPEAKER_01: Like, you have that Emilio Stefan Jean of like, I'm gonna work my ass off and I'm gonna dream bigger than I've ever dreamt before, and it's gonna happen, and then the next dream is gonna happen.
• 1:00:36
SPEAKER_01: And like I see so much of him in you that um yeah, it's amazing.
• 1:00:41
SPEAKER_03: I love that, and I also I've always hated the word no.
• 1:00:44
SPEAKER_03: Like, if somebody tells you no, you can find a way to make things happen.
• 1:00:49
SPEAKER_03: I mean, I never I never thought that I would be doing half the things that I've been able to do, you know.
• 1:00:55
SPEAKER_03: Um, and sometimes also it's not your a path is not linear, you know what I mean?
• 1:01:00
SPEAKER_03: A lot of the success that I'm having now, I'm having at the age that I'm at now.
• 1:01:04
  SPEAKER_03: And I don't know.
• 1:01:06
  SPEAKER_03: I just I I can't I can't give up on something that I fought so hard for.
• 1:01:10
SPEAKER_03: Like I'm already here, I'm not turning back, I'm not gonna like soften up now.
• 1:01:14
SPEAKER_03: Like, no, let's fucking go.
• 1:01:16
SPEAKER_03: Let's fucking let's see how far I can take this, you know.
• 1:01:19
  SPEAKER_06: I love that.
• 1:01:19
  SPEAKER_06: I love that.
• 1:01:20
SPEAKER_06: You know, before we get into our let it loose segment, I have to say that I can't wait to be back in Miami home.
• 1:01:31
SPEAKER_06: And hopefully, when I do go back home, you are performing somewhere because I would love to see, you know, your your tribute to pop or just you know, use performing for sure.
• 1:01:42
SPEAKER_06: I love your covers of Careless Whisper, Believe.
• 1:01:46
SPEAKER_06: I love your song, Can I Be Me?
• 1:01:48
SPEAKER_06: But you know, I do have a guilty pleasure though.
• 1:01:51
  SPEAKER_03: Uh-oh.
• 1:01:52
  SPEAKER_03: What is it?
• 1:01:53
  SPEAKER_06: Ice Cream.
• 1:01:55
  SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
• 1:01:56
  SPEAKER_03: Honestly, I I love that record.
• 1:01:59
SPEAKER_03: That's we're going back to 2018 there, but I love that song.
• 1:02:04
  SPEAKER_03: I'm excited.
• 1:02:05
SPEAKER_03: I'm excited to drop some new music.
• 1:02:07
SPEAKER_03: I I definitely think that everything that I've put out from before is gonna seem like really like just far away from who I am now.
• 1:02:16
SPEAKER_03: Like I all the stuff that I'm working on now, but I just want it to be done right and I want it to be, you know, I want it to be the best it can be.
• 1:02:25
  SPEAKER_03: But thank you.
• 1:02:25
  SPEAKER_03: I received that.
• 1:02:26
SPEAKER_03: I love ice cream, I love the background vocals on that track.
• 1:02:28
SPEAKER_03: I love the little El Alero at the end.
• 1:02:30
  SPEAKER_03: I love it, I love it.
• 1:02:32
SPEAKER_06: And it's it's you know, listening to your catalog, it's it's fun to see how you've evolved, and I so look forward to see you continuing to evolve.
• 1:02:45
SPEAKER_06: So hopefully, hopefully, I get to see you uh at some point.
• 1:02:49
SPEAKER_06: Uh, we'll definitely see each other next March at Carnegie Hall.
• 1:02:53
  SPEAKER_03: I can't wait for that.
• 1:02:54
SPEAKER_03: It's gonna be so fun.
• 1:02:55
SPEAKER_06: Now we have reached our segment of the show where our guests get to let it loose.
• 1:03:02
SPEAKER_06: This is your opportunity to share whatever it is that you want.
• 1:03:05
SPEAKER_06: Anything that you want to get off your chest, we want to hear Robbie Unfiltered.
• 1:03:10
  SPEAKER_03: And I know that I'm okay.
• 1:03:12
SPEAKER_03: Wait, do I start now?
• 1:03:13
SPEAKER_06: Wait, yeah, go right ahead, go.
• 1:03:15
SPEAKER_03: You're ready to let it loose.
• 1:03:16
  SPEAKER_03: Let it loose.
• 1:03:17
SPEAKER_03: The thing that I think I want to let it let loose about is people asking me if I play basketball every day of my life.
• 1:03:26
  SPEAKER_03: Oh, I hate that.
• 1:03:27
SPEAKER_02: Can we let it go?
• 1:03:28
SPEAKER_03: Can we let it go?
• 1:03:29
  SPEAKER_03: Because you're tall.
• 1:03:30
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like I got that a lot.
• 1:03:32
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I was like, no, I'm I was a baseball player, yeah.
• 1:03:35
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, enough enough.
• 1:03:36
SPEAKER_03: Like, I'm done with or like or like people at the grocery store looking at me like I'm a fucking giant, like just enough.
• 1:03:44
SPEAKER_03: Like, I don't go up to short people and like you know, stare at them and make fun of them.
• 1:03:49
  SPEAKER_03: No, like enough.
• 1:03:51
SPEAKER_03: Like, I'm I'm honestly I'm so done with it.
• 1:03:53
SPEAKER_03: If one more person asked me if I play a basketball and I yeah, like enough.
• 1:03:58
SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry, I'm just I was really annoyed about this yesterday.
• 1:04:01
SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, to me all the time, all the time.
• 1:04:05
SPEAKER_03: But then you know, the thing is is that when I'm like they see if they see me on stage and they meet me on stage, they wouldn't they don't ask that.
• 1:04:11
SPEAKER_03: It's just random people random, uh I get it.
• 1:04:16
  SPEAKER_06: I I totally get that.
• 1:04:17
SPEAKER_06: Who's the taller one here in the group?
• 1:04:18
SPEAKER_06: Wes, because you're you're tall as well.
• 1:04:20
  SPEAKER_03: I'm six three.
• 1:04:21
  SPEAKER_06: You're six three, Robbie.
• 1:04:23
  SPEAKER_03: Oh work, okay.
• 1:04:24
SPEAKER_03: Yes, yeah, I'm six five.
• 1:04:26
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, okay.
• 1:04:28
SPEAKER_01: I mean I'm neither of those heights.
• 1:04:30
SPEAKER_02: When the old lady asks for something high on the shelf at the grocery store, that's when it's okay, right?
• 1:04:36
  SPEAKER_02: No, no, no.
• 1:04:38
  SPEAKER_03: Leave me alone.
• 1:04:39
SPEAKER_03: No, I would help her, absolutely.
• 1:04:41
SPEAKER_03: That's okay, but that's different, that's because she needs help.
• 1:04:44
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, exactly.
• 1:04:45
SPEAKER_03: I just I just think it's like I don't know, it's rude, like to make any kind of I don't know, assumption about somebody that you don't know.
• 1:04:53
  SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
• 1:04:53
SPEAKER_03: I know they don't mean mean it in a bad way, but but I totally understand.
• 1:04:58
SPEAKER_03: It's been it's been my whole life, like enough, yeah.
• 1:05:02
  SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I can imagine.
• 1:05:03
SPEAKER_03: Robbie, that's not a brand, but yeah, Robbie.
• 1:05:06
SPEAKER_06: Don't don't share this with anyone as if you know the world is not gonna listen to this, but you've been you've been one of my favorite guests that we've had in our two seasons.
