Latest / Foul Territory / AL MVP Roundtable Debate: Judge vs. Raleigh + Angels low blow excuse
Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: All right, let's do this. It is the big al
- 0:06Speaker 1: MVP debate. We have Ryan Davis joining us right now.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Of course, you can catch his work in the Seattle Times.
- 0:12Speaker 1: He's been on here before many times. Chris Kershner also
- 0:14Speaker 1: has been on here, and you can follow his work
- 0:17Speaker 1: covering the Yankees in the Athletic. Nice and simple here,
- 0:20Speaker 1: we'll start with Chris.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Al MVP.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Your thoughts.
- 0:26Speaker 3: I'm not really entirely sure why it's a debate. Like
- 0:30Speaker 3: I get that cal Raley had a great year with Seattle,
- 0:34Speaker 3: hitting sixty home runs as the catchers, obviously incredibly impressive,
- 0:39Speaker 3: but you know, Aaron Judge was forty three percent better
- 0:42Speaker 3: statistically speaking than Raleigh offensively. Raleigh didn't grade out particularly
- 0:48Speaker 3: well defensively. I get he has other duties that he's
- 0:52Speaker 3: in charge of when it comes to managing the pitching staff,
- 0:55Speaker 3: but you know, Judge had another historic season. He had
- 0:58Speaker 3: fifty three home runs, won the best adding title. How
- 1:01Speaker 3: to WRC plus over two hundred, which is not common.
- 1:05Speaker 3: I'm not really sure why it's a debate Judge would
- 1:07Speaker 3: be the MVP.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Ryan Davish, your thoughts, why do you think cal Raley
- 1:14Speaker 1: should be in further consideration than Chris is considering.
- 1:18Speaker 4: Uh cal Rawley trying to catch Carlos Margus in a
- 1:21Speaker 4: leverage situation and blocking every pitch. That's why you know
- 1:27Speaker 4: you got two former catchers on here. And the beating
- 1:31Speaker 4: that cal Raley took, the amount of innings he logged
- 1:34Speaker 4: behind the plate, the amount of responsibility they can't be
- 1:37Speaker 4: measured in statistics. This isn't the category for best offensive player.
- 1:40Speaker 4: I mean, if it was, Judge would be a winner
- 1:44Speaker 4: and a landslide.
- 1:45Speaker 5: But it's about overall value.
- 1:47Speaker 4: I mean, it's a gray area that's been left up
- 1:49Speaker 4: to the voters and how you measure it. But I've
- 1:53Speaker 4: watched a lot of bad catching in my life, and
- 1:54Speaker 4: I've seen elite catching. Even if the framing numbers don't
- 1:58Speaker 4: match this year, which is also inative of the strike
- 2:00Speaker 4: zone changes that they've had. I just don't really feel
- 2:05Speaker 4: like a player that a catcher that goes out and
- 2:09Speaker 4: does what he's done and puts up the numbers he has.
- 2:13Speaker 4: I just think there's too much value in what he
- 2:14Speaker 4: does on a daily basis, on both sides, you know,
- 2:17Speaker 4: behind the plate as well as at the plate to
- 2:20Speaker 4: be overlooked.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Dav Thank you I thought you were talking about me
- 2:23Speaker 2: there for a while when you started talking about me,
- 2:25Speaker 2: So thank you, thank you for the kind words. And
- 2:27Speaker 2: second of all, it was nice of you to get
- 2:29Speaker 2: off the Loaje deck a. You're on your cruise that
- 2:31Speaker 2: you're on wherever the heck you are, because the next
- 2:35Speaker 2: performer looks like they're getting ready to start. I don't
- 2:37Speaker 2: know what the heck's happening behind you, but I probably
- 2:39Speaker 2: don't want to know the answer to that.
- 2:41Speaker 4: I'm at the Cosmo and at the GM meetings. There's
- 2:44Speaker 4: some weird stuff going on around here. There's a huge
- 2:48Speaker 4: you see that statue behind me. I mean, like it's
- 2:50Speaker 4: really strange, you know. I mean, the Cosmo is an
- 2:53Speaker 4: interesting place. It's just been overtaken by a bunch of
- 2:57Speaker 4: middle aged white dudes and quarter zips and on cloud shoes.
- 2:59Speaker 5: Right now.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Hey, yeah, again, you're talking about me, So take it
- 3:03Speaker 2: easy and quartership. I have Jordan zone. But I'm gonna
- 3:07Speaker 2: say this. I agree with you. Ryan cal Rawley's the MVP.
- 3:10Speaker 2: I've been saying it since June. I also said he's
- 3:13Speaker 2: hit sixty homers. Nobody believed me on that. And the
- 3:15Speaker 2: second thing, there's many reasons why historic year catcher. His
- 3:19Speaker 2: numbers were what those numbers are, But he has been
- 3:21Speaker 2: gold Glove in the past, Platinum Glove, all that. But
- 3:24Speaker 2: what he what the different team makes for his team
- 3:26Speaker 2: to me is why he's the most valuable player. Plus
- 3:28Speaker 2: I'm just a firm believer in guys that win. Cal
- 3:31Speaker 2: Rawly is a winner. He should win. No Offenser and Judge,
- 3:33Speaker 2: we love you. And final word, he has the best
- 3:36Speaker 2: nickname in the sport, so that should also be a point.
- 3:40Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 3:40Speaker 4: To me, it's like, you look at Cal and what
- 3:43Speaker 4: he accomplished this year, There'll never be another season like
- 3:46Speaker 4: this again. I think Judge is perfectly capable of putting
- 3:48Speaker 4: together another season like he did this year. He's that
- 3:51Speaker 4: good offensively. But you know, he didn't play in the
- 3:55Speaker 4: field as much. He was a liability in the field
- 3:57Speaker 4: after he got injured. I just think, and we're nitpicking here,
- 4:01Speaker 4: we're nitpicking both of these guys in any other season
- 4:04Speaker 4: if they don't If you know, one of these guys
- 4:06Speaker 4: throws out this season and they don't have them together,
- 4:09Speaker 4: we're not having this debate. We're talking about as two
- 4:12Speaker 4: guys that put together ridiculous seasons at the same time.
- 4:16Speaker 4: I mean, I remember the year with Trout and Miguel
- 4:19Speaker 4: Cabrera and Miki getting the triple crown. I mean, I
- 4:22Speaker 4: guess to me, and I'm sure there'll be a lot
- 4:24Speaker 4: of anger and a lot of debate, but you know,
- 4:28Speaker 4: I just look at the value of catching and the
- 4:31Speaker 4: defensive position and it's just it outweighs any other position
- 4:35Speaker 4: on the field significantly.
- 4:39Speaker 6: Chris, this is my This is how I always argue
- 4:43Speaker 6: when people are arguing this. I want you to tell
- 4:46Speaker 6: me why cal Rawley is the MVP, and then I
- 4:49Speaker 6: want Ryan to tell me why Aaron Judge is the MVP,
- 4:53Speaker 6: because I think when you put out there the things
- 4:57Speaker 6: that you think, Okay, Aaron Judge did this amazing, we're
- 5:00Speaker 6: talking about value, and if you don't look at the
- 5:03Speaker 6: other person's value, I don't think you can truly come
- 5:07Speaker 6: to the determination of who should be the MVP unless
- 5:12Speaker 6: you're only looking at the person that you think should
- 5:14Speaker 6: be MVP.
- 5:14Speaker 2: You follow what I'm.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Saying, Yep, Yeah, I mean I think again, Roley had
- 5:19Speaker 3: a great year. You know, AJ said he had a
- 5:22Speaker 3: historic year, and that absolutely should be considered here when
- 5:26Speaker 3: we're talking about who shouldn't and shouldn't win MVP hasn't
- 5:31Speaker 3: been done before. He had the most home runs in
- 5:33Speaker 3: a single season by a switch hitter. I get all that,
- 5:36Speaker 3: and also again he's managing and pitching staff on a
- 5:39Speaker 3: day to day basis. He's the leader of the team.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Mariners won the division for the first time since two
- 5:44Speaker 3: thousand and one, and Cal obviously had a huge role
- 5:48Speaker 3: in that. So I certainly get the argument there. My
- 5:52Speaker 3: point is that is all of that, you know, does
- 5:56Speaker 3: that come close to what Judge's difference is when it
- 5:59Speaker 3: comes to what he did offensively? And I also think
- 6:03Speaker 3: it's being discounted. You know, you talk about Cal's leadership,
- 6:06Speaker 3: Well what about Judges leadership. You know, he was the
- 6:09Speaker 3: leader of a team that won ninety four games, tied
- 6:11Speaker 3: for the best record in the American League. Obviously, you know,
- 6:16Speaker 3: you speak to all of the players and everyone raves
- 6:18Speaker 3: about his leadership. He had a great season defensively. Obviously
- 6:23Speaker 3: he had the elbow injury which impacted his throwing, but
- 6:26Speaker 3: you know he was still fifth and outs above average
- 6:28Speaker 3: for all right fielders. So I guess, you know, does
- 6:31Speaker 3: that leadership aspect what he did defensively? Does that give
- 6:35Speaker 3: Judge the edge over Raleigh. I think both of these
- 6:38Speaker 3: guys are ultimately deserving of winning the MVP. But you know,
- 6:42Speaker 3: in my opinion, again, I think the offensive differences are
- 6:46Speaker 3: just too big in judges favor.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Right if as if you look at it, go ahead,
- 6:51Speaker 2: go ahead.
- 6:52Speaker 4: No, I'm totally going to use this argument theory with
- 6:56Speaker 4: my girlfriend. So when we're having an argument, I want
- 6:58Speaker 4: you to go from my perspective and I'll go from yours.
- 7:00Speaker 5: I mean, that's going to help me out a lot,
- 7:01Speaker 5: I think, because I'm always in trouble.
- 7:04Speaker 4: To me, it's the argument for Judge is this, His
- 7:08Speaker 4: numbers offensively were so good it doesn't matter what position
- 7:12Speaker 4: he was playing, whether it was D H right field,
- 7:14Speaker 4: whether he was good in the field or not. His
- 7:16Speaker 4: offensive numbers were simply so unbelievably good that it doesn't
- 7:20Speaker 4: matter anything else that that that that alone, what he
- 7:23Speaker 4: did at the plate can well what he did at
- 7:27Speaker 4: the plate, the shear, the sheer, statistics that he produced
- 7:31Speaker 4: h overweight or over you know, outweigh any narratives of
- 7:37Speaker 4: leadership or even defensive metrics that I find kind of
- 7:41Speaker 4: you know, not always reliable, or you know, the concept
- 7:44Speaker 4: of leadership that everything he did at the plate alone
- 7:47Speaker 4: puts him over the top of what anybody else did.
- 7:50Speaker 4: That's the argument you make for in Judge.
- 7:53Speaker 6: All right, So Ryan and Chris, this is my question,
- 7:56Speaker 6: and maybe this can't ever be done because we're just
- 7:59Speaker 6: talking about in a vacuum. If you traded cal Ray
- 8:04Speaker 6: for Aaron Judge, do each team end up at the
- 8:08Speaker 6: same place? I'll go to Ryan first. Does each team
- 8:14Speaker 6: end up in the same place? Does do the Mariners
- 8:16Speaker 6: end up in the same place if they got Aaron Judge?
- 8:19Speaker 6: And then Chris you can answer right after he's done.
- 8:23Speaker 5: That's a good question.
- 8:26Speaker 2: I'm looking at.
- 8:27Speaker 4: I'm thinking about who the Mariners have as catchers and
- 8:29Speaker 4: what they would do. Yeah, that I don't know that
- 8:33Speaker 4: they would. I mean, Aaron Judges' numbers were so good
- 8:36Speaker 4: and so unbelievable. But the amount of trust that is
- 8:40Speaker 4: placed in cal Raley on a daily basis to handle
- 8:43Speaker 4: the pitch calling, the game calling, the defense, the defense,
- 8:46Speaker 4: a lot of the strategy. I don't know that any
- 8:51Speaker 4: other catcher out there not named JT. Real Mudo fits that.
- 8:56Speaker 5: Bill. I mean, maybe you know.
- 8:57Speaker 4: Because Kirk and all those other guys like all is
- 9:00Speaker 4: elite and what he does. And I don't know that
- 9:03Speaker 4: you can find somebody like that.

- 10:06Speaker 1: help support f T.
- 10:08Speaker 3: I think if the Yankees added Raleigh in place of Judge,
- 10:13Speaker 3: I think they would still have a really good offense
- 10:16Speaker 3: because the Yankees did have a good offense even if
- 10:18Speaker 3: he picked Judges numbers out. I just think if we're
- 10:22Speaker 3: looking at it on a year to year basis and
- 10:26Speaker 3: what Judge has done consistently, now, I think they would
- 10:29Speaker 3: be worse off in the long term. But if we're
- 10:31Speaker 3: talking about just this year alone, it's probably similar. But
- 10:35Speaker 3: I would want judges consistency for the long term.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Okay, well, I have two questions on this since Scratch
- 10:42Speaker 2: parted up. If Judge was hitting in Seattle, would his
- 10:44Speaker 2: numbers go down? And if Raley was hitting in New
- 10:47Speaker 2: York would his numbers go up?
- 10:50Speaker 6: Right?
- 10:50Speaker 2: Because Seattle is so hard to hit in New York
- 10:52Speaker 2: has two of the shortest porches in baseball, So if
- 10:55Speaker 2: they were switched, would the numbers change a little bit?
- 11:01Speaker 3: I think, if I'm not mistaken, that Raleigh would have
- 11:05Speaker 3: fewer home runs in Yankee Stadium than he would in Seattle.
- 11:11Speaker 3: I'm actually, Chris, come on, do you actually believe that
- 11:14Speaker 3: you would not believe.
- 11:16Speaker 2: That in real life? You believe you could do this
- 11:19Speaker 2: and dad, and you don't. You're not telling me. If
- 11:21Speaker 2: Cal Rowly played in the Yankee Stadium and hit left
- 11:23Speaker 2: handed one hundred games, he wouldn't just yank twenty more
- 11:26Speaker 2: homers in there because he's just gonna out and snatch
- 11:30Speaker 2: balls down the Oh come, I mean, I hate playing
- 11:32Speaker 2: one hundred games in Yankee Stadium. Thank you for bringing
- 11:36Speaker 2: that up. Thank you for bringing that up. Because he
- 11:38Speaker 2: can't because he's Calor he's gonna be the MVP. That's up.
- 11:41Speaker 3: You could have fifty nine home runs in Seattle and
- 11:43Speaker 3: fifty four home runs in New York.
- 11:45Speaker 4: Oh gosh, I the numbers don't lie, right, Oh god,
- 11:51Speaker 4: there are times right still, there are times are right
- 11:53Speaker 4: questions that cast.
- 11:54Speaker 5: I mean, Stock asked that Cole Young hitting a four hundred.
- 11:56Speaker 4: And eighty foot home run initially, and then they had
- 11:58Speaker 4: to go in and reach so and magically, sometimes that
- 12:03Speaker 4: cast doesn't seem to work.
- 12:06Speaker 5: It's not just Yankee Stadium.
- 12:08Speaker 4: You know, cal Raley playing in the Al East Benway, Toronto.
- 12:14Speaker 4: I mean like in the in the West, you're playing
- 12:17Speaker 4: in Anaheim, and well, Sacramento has become a launching pad
- 12:20Speaker 4: now Texas, but you know Texas isn't great. Yeah, Houston
- 12:25Speaker 4: can be I don't know. I I like, I think
- 12:29Speaker 4: too is like you're you adjust you're hitting level to
- 12:32Speaker 4: your to the park itself, and how you would do.
- 12:35Speaker 5: It, I don't know.
- 12:36Speaker 4: I just think like if you put cal Ra in
- 12:40Speaker 4: a Yankees uniform and he did the stuff he did
- 12:42Speaker 4: this year, they'd be building a freaking statue outside of
- 12:44Speaker 4: Yankee Stadium for him. I mean, like, you know, the
- 12:47Speaker 4: the they'd be writing songs about it.
- 12:49Speaker 5: It's just it's a different mindset in New York. But
- 12:52Speaker 5: like Judges, just Judge.
- 12:54Speaker 4: Is just different that Like, the dude is like hercules
- 12:56Speaker 4: out there, and I don't take it.
- 12:58Speaker 5: Away from him. But like again, like we're.
- 13:01Speaker 4: Talking just about measuring value, and I just you know,
- 13:05Speaker 4: to me, there's a lot value and one position over
- 13:08Speaker 4: every other position in baseball, and that's catcher. And maybe
- 13:11Speaker 4: I'm biased because I played it poorly in college, but
- 13:15Speaker 4: like it's just and I watched so many catchers flame
- 13:18Speaker 4: out and so many guys that you think are gonna
- 13:20Speaker 4: be good and it just doesn't happen. And here's a
- 13:22Speaker 4: guy that put together this sort of season and we'll
- 13:25Speaker 4: never see a season like this again. He doesn't, you know,
- 13:28Speaker 4: there is never going to be a season like this
- 13:30Speaker 4: from a catcher ever again in.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Baseball, true, true, okay, stack cast. I once watched a
- 13:35Speaker 2: home run on stack cast at Steinbriger Field that went
- 13:39Speaker 2: three hundred and fifteen feet in defence was three twenty,
- 13:42Speaker 2: so I've yet to figure out how stack cast works.
- 13:44Speaker 2: And then they went back and changed it. So you
- 13:45Speaker 2: can take stack cast sometimes and throw it out the window.
- 13:47Speaker 2: But this is my vote. My vote doesn't matter. Before
- 13:50Speaker 2: we ask you, guys, who you think is gonna win
- 13:52Speaker 2: because of voting. Cal Rawley's gonna win because Divish is
- 13:55Speaker 2: in the Hall of Torture and Chris I don't know
- 13:58Speaker 2: if you guys are in the same hotel, but his
- 14:00Speaker 2: room wins, so therefore Cal is going to win because
- 14:03Speaker 2: just because of the background. That's it. No unbiased opinion
- 14:06Speaker 2: as it can get.
- 14:08Speaker 3: Well, I can tell you that it's not going to
- 14:10Speaker 3: be unanimous if if Judge wins or Rally wins. I've
- 14:13Speaker 3: spoken with voters who have voted for Raleigh. I've spoken
- 14:17Speaker 3: with voters who voted for Judge, so I think it
- 14:20Speaker 3: might be a close race. But again, I would be
- 14:23Speaker 3: surprised if Judge didn't win, just considering his numbers.
- 14:30Speaker 4: Right, Yeah, I think Judge is probably going to win.
- 14:33Speaker 4: I don't necessarily agree with it, but I've kind of done,
- 14:36Speaker 4: you know, the internal polling as well, and I think
- 14:41Speaker 4: Judge might edge cal out minimally. And that's I mean,
- 14:45Speaker 4: that's what's crazy. Like I was looking when at the
- 14:49Speaker 4: numbers and you just go through, I mean, think about this,
- 14:52Speaker 4: Jose Ramirez is probably going to finish third, Bobby what's
- 14:55Speaker 4: going to finish fourth? And look at the seasons they
- 14:58Speaker 4: produced as well. What the top two guys have done
- 15:02Speaker 4: is so different than anybody else in a long time
- 15:05Speaker 4: in baseball. That's what's made this so unique. I mean,
- 15:09Speaker 4: you look at Ramiers this year, you look at Witch years,
- 15:11Speaker 4: you look at all this stuff that they're they're very
- 15:14Speaker 4: MVP caliber, and then you have these two guys doing
- 15:16Speaker 4: stuff that hasn't been done in the game. And that's
- 15:19Speaker 4: what's pretty ridiculous about all of it.
- 15:23Speaker 6: Does this mean this is pretty and Chris, does this
- 15:26Speaker 6: mean if Aaron Judge wins that a catcher will never
- 15:30Speaker 6: win the MVP again because the last one to win
- 15:34Speaker 6: it was Buster Posey and it's going to take massive,
- 15:38Speaker 6: massive numbers.
- 15:40Speaker 2: If cal Rally does not win this year.
- 15:43Speaker 3: I don't think it means a catcher is not going
- 15:45Speaker 3: to win. I just think, you know, we see it
- 15:48Speaker 3: across other sports, like sometimes guys have crazy seasons and
- 15:51Speaker 3: don't win MVP because another guy had a crazy season.
- 15:54Speaker 3: So I don't I don't think it means that a
- 15:56Speaker 3: catcher is not going to win again.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Okay, so we just got away for judging Otani to retire.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Then what you're saying, Oh yeah, I mean, I mean
- 16:09Speaker 2: it's crazy though, And I know, Christy, I know you're
- 16:11Speaker 2: a Yankee homer. I get it, But like, aren't people
- 16:13Speaker 2: tired of voting for Judge? Aren't they tired of voting
- 16:16Speaker 2: for Judge?
- 16:18Speaker 3: I'm certainly not a Yankees homer. I think if you
- 16:21Speaker 3: ask whence, they would say the opposite of that.
- 16:24Speaker 5: So I think I.
- 16:29Speaker 3: Think there's definitely judging Otani fatigue. But again, if they're
- 16:32Speaker 3: going to continue putting up crazy numbers, then they should
- 16:36Speaker 3: be rewarded. It's like the NBA with Nicole Jokic. If
- 16:39Speaker 3: Yoki is going to go crazy every single year, does
- 16:42Speaker 3: that mean he shouldn't win MVP just because he has
- 16:44Speaker 3: good numbers and the other guys don't have as good numbers,
- 16:47Speaker 3: So I don't get the argument when it comes to
- 16:50Speaker 3: voter fatigue. If a player deserves it, then they should win,
- 16:53Speaker 3: no matter how many MVPs they've won.
- 16:55Speaker 2: That's fair. Before we let you go, I gotta know,
- 16:57Speaker 2: we talked manager of the Year before you guys came
- 16:59Speaker 2: on here. So it was winning the manager of the
- 17:02Speaker 2: year in the American League. And I know Divish, because
- 17:03Speaker 2: he's a Mariner's homer, was definitely gonna say Dan Wilson.
- 17:07Speaker 2: But I'm expecting what do y'all to say? John Schneider,
- 17:09Speaker 2: probably the guy that's right here on the screen.
- 17:13Speaker 4: I'm thinking bout. I think Voat's gonna win it. He
- 17:15Speaker 4: should win it. Vote had the least amount of talent.
- 17:18Speaker 4: I mean, they were gutting that team. You know, they
- 17:20Speaker 4: dropped Naylor, they got rid of guys, and you know,
- 17:24Speaker 4: at one point in the season they were cooked, and
- 17:27Speaker 4: then you know, they.
- 17:28Speaker 5: Just kept playing.
- 17:29Speaker 4: And Stephen Bote is one of the best human beings
- 17:33Speaker 4: I've ever been around. He was with the Mariners for
- 17:36Speaker 4: one year and I think he does a fantastic job.
- 17:39Speaker 5: I you know, given what he had the talent he
- 17:43Speaker 5: had to do. What they did this year.
- 17:45Speaker 4: I think that's deserving a Manager of the Year, but
- 17:47Speaker 4: not everybody looks into that perspective, and so much of
- 17:50Speaker 4: it is based on what you thought the team was
- 17:52Speaker 4: going to be before. I will say this about Schneider, like,
- 17:55Speaker 4: there's a lot that can go wrong in Toronto and
- 17:58Speaker 4: people have kind of you know before or the shoo.
- 18:00Speaker 4: People are always looking for something to go wrong. I
- 18:02Speaker 4: thought he did a great job. I think it's I
- 18:04Speaker 4: think all three of these guys. The big thing is
- 18:06Speaker 4: it's not like strategy, because they've been beaten up for
- 18:08Speaker 4: their strategy, all three of them. But what these guys
- 18:11Speaker 4: get is the players to prepare and play and play
- 18:15Speaker 4: for each other in a way that I think that's
- 18:18Speaker 4: the biggest part of manager.
- 18:19Speaker 5: We talk about the whole bullpen stuff.
- 18:22Speaker 4: Getting guys to show up and work and compete every
- 18:26Speaker 4: single day. That's the biggest role of the manager. It's
- 18:28Speaker 4: not you know, who's going to pinch hit in the seventh.
- 18:37Speaker 3: I think Schneider is gonna win. Okay, Schneider's gonna win
- 18:42Speaker 3: with because you know, Ryan was mentioning it. Tono was
- 18:47Speaker 3: projected to finish in last place in the Al East,
- 18:49Speaker 3: and there was a ton of heat on Schneider going
- 18:52Speaker 3: into the season. I mean, you could certainly make the
- 18:54Speaker 3: argument that Schneider and Ross Atkins were managing and general
- 19:00Speaker 3: managing for their jobs coming into the year, and they
- 19:03Speaker 3: ended up going to the World Series and had the
- 19:05Speaker 3: best record in the American League. So what Schneider did
- 19:08Speaker 3: this year to frankly save his job definitely deserves consideration
- 19:14Speaker 3: for Manager of the Year.
- 19:16Speaker 1: All right, well, glad we're on the same page on
- 19:18Speaker 1: that one.
- 19:19Speaker 2: East coast bias is real.
- 19:22Speaker 6: East coast, west coast bias. To be in the hills
- 19:26Speaker 6: of Montana, he's still west coast bias.
- 19:29Speaker 2: You guys should actually kind of what east coast bias
- 19:33Speaker 2: Wayne to the east.
- 19:34Speaker 1: Stephen Midwest that.
- 19:38Speaker 5: We should be in Vegas in zone.
- 19:41Speaker 1: Come on, Cleveland's the Midwest.
- 19:43Speaker 2: David, you don't want me and you in Vegas for
- 19:45Speaker 2: a couple.
- 19:45Speaker 5: Of days ago, Well that's what I was gonna say.
- 19:47Speaker 5: Are you even allowed in Vegas anymore?
- 19:49Speaker 2: I didn't know that.
- 19:53Speaker 1: He has to be uh what do they call it supervised?
- 19:58Speaker 2: Yeah, yes, yeah, when he goes into Vegas.
- 20:01Speaker 6: When he goes into Vegas, he gets one of those
- 20:03Speaker 6: cones that they put on the dog after surgery, and
- 20:06Speaker 6: that's how AJ has to walk around just like this
- 20:09Speaker 6: all the time in Vegas.
- 20:11Speaker 4: I thought you were gonna go shot caller instead, so
- 20:13Speaker 4: like you're holding every time shock him.
- 20:16Speaker 1: Yeah, no, get off, get out of that table too.
- 20:20Speaker 2: No, you can't talk to those people. No, you can't
- 20:22Speaker 2: do that.
- 20:23Speaker 1: All right, we've at that point of the segment. Good
- 20:25Speaker 1: stuff there.
- 20:26Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks you guys both.
- 20:27Speaker 1: For joining us. I really appreciate it. I know you
- 20:29Speaker 1: got a lot going on right now. So, uh, you
- 20:31Speaker 1: can catch Chris and his coverage in the Athletic and
- 20:34Speaker 1: you can catch Ryan and his coverage in the Seattle Times.
- 20:36Speaker 1: Thanks guys, talk seeing see you guys at MGM Odds.
- 20:41Speaker 1: At the start of the of spring training, not even
- 20:44Speaker 1: at the start of the year, Judge was at plus
- 20:47Speaker 1: three Hundo, Cale.
- 20:49Speaker 2: Rolly was plus ten. I hope someone and you know,
- 20:54Speaker 2: there's some bets out there.
- 20:55Speaker 1: On Raleigh, but at this point there's.
- 20:59Speaker 2: Probably Marritors fan that threw through some money. Not one bet,
- 21:02Speaker 2: not one person in the world bet.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:05Speaker 6: Oh no, no, no, no, I'm saying I bought I bought it.
- 21:08Speaker 6: When you first said he's gonna be the MVP. That
- 21:10Speaker 6: was before, like before even like June, or maybe it
- 21:14Speaker 6: was like June first. You said it, and I think
- 21:16Speaker 6: I got it at like plus twelve hundred at that
- 21:19Speaker 6: point or plus eight hundred.
- 21:21Speaker 2: I have to go back and look.
- 21:23Speaker 1: So Judge was still dominant. Remember after what two three
- 21:29Speaker 1: weeks the Milwaukee Series already at like minus something to win.
- 21:35Speaker 2: A torpedo bets. Yeah, it was the Milwaukee Series.
- 21:39Speaker 1: Yeah, it was the season of the torpedo Uh well,
- 21:42Speaker 1: actually it kind of was for cal Raley.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Cal used it, you know that guy. Yeah, but I'm
- 21:47Speaker 2: saying the first four games was the Torpedo Bats series
- 21:51Speaker 2: when the Yankees were like all using them and they
- 21:53Speaker 2: hit all those homers off the Brewers the four game sweep,
- 21:56Speaker 2: and everyone's like, oh, the new thing the torpedo Bat
- 21:59Speaker 2: had that guy. I mean, they both didn't make the
- 22:02Speaker 2: l C, so not that.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Great, right. The impacted some guys and it didn't impact
- 22:09Speaker 1: many others. And that's actually what happens. Make the World
- 22:14Speaker 1: Series the Mariners, Mate, you're talking about the Mariners.
- 22:16Speaker 2: I'm talking about I'm talking about the Yankees and the Bruers. Sorry,
- 22:19Speaker 2: the Brewers made the the Yankees.
- 22:22Speaker 1: Yeah, but yeah, if you watched the first four games
- 22:25Speaker 1: and you were a buyer into the Torpedo Bats and
- 22:28Speaker 1: also thought, oh, man, brus don't have any pitching. Wrong
- 22:32Speaker 1: and wrong. Do we value war enough for catchers? That's
- 22:39Speaker 1: the only thing I'm thinking about, Like, are they getting enough?
- 22:42Speaker 2: Can't quantify it?
- 22:43Speaker 1: Yeah, they get some credit, extra credit, But I'm like,
- 22:46Speaker 1: do they.
- 22:46Speaker 2: Get You can't quantify it, that's mine look at their salaries.
- 22:49Speaker 2: They can't. They can't quantify it.
- 22:50Speaker 5: They won't.
- 22:51Speaker 1: That's true. Any sport parlay boost token score a bigger payout.

- 24:10Speaker 1: wrote a story in the Orange County Register about Lucas
- 24:14Speaker 1: Giolito not working out for the Angels a couple seasons
- 24:17Speaker 1: ago when they acquired him, and they brought up his
- 24:20Speaker 1: divorce as reasoning.
- 24:22Speaker 2: You love the Angel Scott.
- 24:24Speaker 1: The Angels are the gift that keeps on giving content wise,
- 24:27Speaker 1: and Fletcher is one of the beat reporters out there.
- 24:30Speaker 1: This is definitely coming from a team official. They don't
- 24:33Speaker 1: mess around with their coverage the part from the story.
- 24:38Speaker 1: The Angels believe part of what went wrong with Giolito
- 24:42Speaker 1: then was that he had started divorce proceedings right before
- 24:45Speaker 1: the trade, unbeknownst to the Angels when they made the
- 24:47Speaker 1: deal and he was distracted. Sam Blom, who covers the
- 24:51Speaker 1: Angels for The Athletic Quote, tweeted it and said, Wow,
- 24:55Speaker 1: can't believe this was said. I Agreenumber one absolute shot fired.
- 25:02Speaker 1: Number two you can still pitch despite going through a
- 25:07Speaker 1: divorce proceeding. Number three krats it was public information before
- 25:12Speaker 1: they acquired him. And number four he probably had a
- 25:16Speaker 1: messed up elbow since he underwent Tommy John surgery soon
- 25:19Speaker 1: after that.
- 25:19Speaker 6: Anything else, I'm just going to hit the one thing
- 25:24Speaker 6: because people forget when we talk about players like that,
- 25:26Speaker 6: they're humans. Like everybody thinks like this mercenary just came
- 25:30Speaker 6: in to pitch for their team and it didn't go well.
- 25:34Speaker 6: For whoever said this, I don't care if it is
- 25:36Speaker 6: the lowest totem pole person who leaked this out. For
- 25:42Speaker 6: whoever said this, screw you, because what he's going through
- 25:46Speaker 6: in his personal life could affect what's going on in
- 25:49Speaker 6: the field, whether it's been out there, whether anybody knows
- 25:52Speaker 6: it or not.
- 25:53Speaker 2: All that stuff.
- 25:56Speaker 6: You don't need to bring that up. You don't need
- 25:58Speaker 6: to bring personal things up in evaluating why somebody not publicly,
- 26:04Speaker 6: maybe hey, you know what we're going through this, we're
- 26:06Speaker 6: you know, we're talking about this internally, Hey, this person's
- 26:09Speaker 6: going through it. Maybe that goes into your discussion internally.
- 26:13Speaker 6: Don't ever bring it up in the public. I just
- 26:17Speaker 6: don't understand it.
- 26:21Speaker 2: But the other thing is, didn't they trade for him
- 26:23Speaker 2: and then they shipped them to Cleveland right after.
- 26:25Speaker 1: The dump deadline?
- 26:26Speaker 2: And then Ronaldo Lopez? Didn't they then show Cleveland like
- 26:29Speaker 2: the same time. Yes, and you only had a few
- 26:31Speaker 2: starts with the Angels, right like three or four starts,
- 26:33Speaker 2: and then they're like, oh, no, never mind, what change
- 26:35Speaker 2: am I? We're going to tell you guys right.
- 26:38Speaker 1: One of the dumbest.
- 26:39Speaker 2: It was one of the craziest things. But to say,
- 26:41Speaker 2: I agree with Chriss to say this, but this goes
- 26:43Speaker 2: back to our point we always talk about in here.
- 26:45Speaker 2: Players aren't robots. Things happen off the field. Now. Listen,
- 26:50Speaker 2: I played with dudes that were going through it, and
- 26:51Speaker 2: they played better because they were distracted and they were
- 26:55Speaker 2: thinking about other stuff and then I played dudes with
- 26:57Speaker 2: the smallest, littlest, tiniest thing. To most people, they were
- 27:00Speaker 2: like sit in a corner and crawl up in a
- 27:02Speaker 2: ball because they couldn't handle it. So it's different personalities.
- 27:06Speaker 2: That's why scouting is important. Makeup for guys is important,
- 27:09Speaker 2: and trying to figure that out. But to say, oh,
- 27:11Speaker 2: he didn't pitch Goodness three or four starts because he
- 27:13Speaker 2: was going through divorce, which was public at that time.
- 27:16Speaker 2: This is just bad. It's just bad. It's just not cool. Sorry,
- 27:19Speaker 2: it's not cool. Many the Angels have been through enough recently.
- 27:22Speaker 2: Aren't they still going through enough? At this point?
- 27:24Speaker 1: They can't stop every person involved to say in the
- 27:27Speaker 1: front office of it was coming from there, from commenting,
- 27:31Speaker 1: especially anonymously.
- 27:32Speaker 2: I don't love this, but what are you gonna do?
- 27:33Speaker 1: But that's why we're bringing it up, because we're like,
- 27:36Speaker 1: what this is.
- 27:37Speaker 6: Where Maybe this is too much, but we all we
- 27:41Speaker 6: always talk about the little things with the Angels. Maybe
- 27:44Speaker 6: this is too much to like lump this in with it.
- 27:47Speaker 6: But organizations that are run well and run from the top,
- 27:51Speaker 6: they have issues, they have problems, yes, but if it
- 27:54Speaker 6: constantly keeps coming up with your organization. There needs to
- 28:00Speaker 6: be a discussion about that. There needs to be a
- 28:02Speaker 6: change because it all filters down from the top. I'm
- 28:05Speaker 6: not saying it's perimin Asian. I'm not even saying it's
- 28:08Speaker 6: just it's just Arty moreno, I could point more towards
- 28:12Speaker 6: ARTI moreno than periman Asian. But if it keeps happening,
- 28:16Speaker 6: you have to look to the top because that idea,
- 28:19Speaker 6: those like those things that are allowed you hold everybody
- 28:23Speaker 6: to a higher standard, and it starts from the top.
- 28:29Speaker 1: By the way, for more context on this article, he
- 28:31Speaker 1: was talking about rotation options for the Angels this offseason.
- 28:36Speaker 1: You know it's not gonna help you sign Lucas Giolito.
- 28:39Speaker 2: This is season back there. Let's say pay him way.
- 28:44Speaker 1: More, way more. This is bad pr to release something
- 28:49Speaker 1: like that about someone like that. I'm not saying to
- 28:52Speaker 1: reveal it again, we know it's revealed, but to be like, oh, yeah,
- 28:55Speaker 1: you can pitch well because he was going through divorce
- 28:57Speaker 1: shootings like oh really, you know.
- 28:59Speaker 2: But this had to come for somebody has some sort
- 29:02Speaker 2: of power in the organization. Yes, this isn't from like
- 29:06Speaker 2: an usher that's in the third Death, like I'm serious,
- 29:09Speaker 2: Like this had to come with somebody with a little
- 29:10Speaker 2: knowledge of the situation, right, so that it's just it's
- 29:14Speaker 2: a weird thing to say.
- 29:16Speaker 6: I mean, not not sign Lucas Giolito, how about not
- 29:19Speaker 6: sign anybody?
- 29:21Speaker 2: How about nobody?
- 29:22Speaker 6: How about the fact that if this comes out and
- 29:25Speaker 6: I'm a free agent and they come to me with
- 29:27Speaker 6: a nice offer, maybe even the biggest offer, You're gonna
- 29:31Speaker 6: have some explaining to do, Like I'm gonna need to
- 29:34Speaker 6: find out like, because I want to be part of
- 29:36Speaker 6: this quote family. Yes, I want the money. Yes, that's
- 29:40Speaker 6: what free agents are looking for. But other free agents
- 29:42Speaker 6: are gonna look at this and be.
- 29:43Speaker 1: Like who who?
- 29:45Speaker 2: I better be careful. I get it.
- 29:47Speaker 6: I'm accepting this money. But I don't know that I
- 29:51Speaker 6: can get super close with anybody because anything that I
- 29:55Speaker 6: anything that I'm confidently telling them in in secret, that
- 30:01Speaker 6: I think is going to stay in might get out.
- 30:04Speaker 6: This might cook them for more than just the Giolito
- 30:07Speaker 6: signing That wasn't gonna happen anyway.
- 30:10Speaker 1: Is it going to get leaked by the HVAC technician
- 30:13Speaker 1: too soon? Last thing, I.
- 30:16Speaker 2: Don't think I mean, I think you guys are taking
- 30:18Speaker 2: it I'm gonna be I don't know that other than Geolito,
- 30:21Speaker 2: I don't think it. It affects other free agents you
- 30:24Speaker 2: don't really want. I don't think so. I think that
- 30:27Speaker 2: Giolito it might affect, but I don't think it's gonna
- 30:29Speaker 2: affect it because if they come with the competitive offer
- 30:32Speaker 2: and they beat other offers. Listen, say what you want
- 30:35Speaker 2: about Anaheim, Los Angeles, Anaheim of Angels of Anaheim, or
- 30:39Speaker 2: whatever the hell you want to call them. An I'm
- 30:41Speaker 2: still a pretty good place to be. Like, if you could,
- 30:44Speaker 2: if you make a lot of money, you go live
- 30:45Speaker 2: on Newport Coast and and go to Javiers every day
- 30:48Speaker 2: and hang out on the beaches and all that. It's
- 30:51Speaker 2: pretty good living down there. It's not La but you
- 30:54Speaker 2: still get the weather, and you still get some other stuff.
- 30:56Speaker 2: You get less traffic and all that stuff. It's it's
- 30:57Speaker 2: a pretty good place. And if you can figure out,
- 31:00Speaker 2: because I was there in two thousand and two when
- 31:01Speaker 2: they had the rally, the rally sticks and the monkey,
- 31:04Speaker 2: the stupid monkey guy, the monkey jumping around and the
- 31:06Speaker 2: rally monkey jumping around. I was there. We lost, and
- 31:08Speaker 2: they all see us. To them, it's a pretty awesome
- 31:11Speaker 2: place when they're going right, if you could be the
- 31:13Speaker 2: one of the free ags, help turning around, give me
- 31:15Speaker 2: a special place. So I don't know that. I don't
- 31:17Speaker 2: know this affects anybody other than Lucas Giolito. But it's
- 31:20Speaker 2: just not a good thing to say.
- 31:22Speaker 1: Yeah, it's more just whoever told that to Jeff for
- 31:24Speaker 1: the story? Really? Yeah, that's all really, And again, if
- 31:32Speaker 1: you really want to go, we have Jeff here, that's
- 31:36Speaker 1: right showtime. But if you really want to go performance,
- 31:39Speaker 1: I mean, you got elbow surgery soon after that, right
- 31:43Speaker 1: soon after that season ended, he shows up for spring
- 31:45Speaker 1: training and gets elbow surgery. There's a chance he didn't
- 31:48Speaker 1: pitch well because he had a compromised UCL. I would
- 31:53Speaker 1: say that's a better chance of being the problem. And
- 31:56Speaker 1: that you could say we didn't know, because nobody knew
- 31:59Speaker 1: that until you want to the Red Sox and they
- 32:01Speaker 1: found it could have happened then, but usually there's already
- 32:05Speaker 1: some wear and tear when that happens. Just throwing that
- 32:08Speaker 1: out there. You guys remember Dustin Garnett.
- 32:10Speaker 2: The catcher.
- 32:11Speaker 1: Yeah, he's a catching coach now for the Braves. He
- 32:15Speaker 1: was the bullpen coach for the Rockies last season. So
- 32:18Speaker 1: if you can make it through that, you can make
- 32:20Speaker 1: it through anything. The Rockies bullpen this past season. Holy shit.
- 32:25Speaker 1: And he was the catching and game planing coordinator for
- 32:27Speaker 1: the team's minor league system the previous two years. He's
- 32:33Speaker 1: gonna be like, damn upgrade.
- 32:36Speaker 2: Yeah for real, for real?
- 32:39Speaker 1: Yeah, did you come across him at all cracks?
- 32:41Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 32:41Speaker 6: We played again, I mean played against each other, and
- 32:46Speaker 6: let's see, probably like fifteen on he was kinda yeah,
- 32:52Speaker 6: he was in that I've forgetting what his name is,
- 32:55Speaker 6: the big strong right hander. They kind of came up together,
- 33:00Speaker 6: Uh by hand hitting catcher ended up going to the the.
- 33:04Speaker 2: Rocky Huh Tom Murphy, Tom Murphy.
- 33:10Speaker 6: Yeah, him and Garneault we're kind of passing passing in
- 33:16Speaker 6: the night at the same time.
- 33:18Speaker 2: Did you get to about his back and he suing
- 33:21Speaker 2: the Giants or something?
- 33:22Speaker 1: Yeah, did you guys read about that.
- 33:25Speaker 2: I don't know the whole story, but he's suing the
- 33:27Speaker 2: Giants right because he misdiagnosed him or something.
- 33:30Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a pretty wild story. Basically, he said his
- 33:35Speaker 1: herniated disc wasn't treated correctly, misdiagnosed as a mild obleache,
- 33:39Speaker 1: strain that made it worse than sent to an outside
- 33:41Speaker 1: clink by the team. But this is all coming from him.
- 33:43Speaker 1: But they were injecting the wrong disc with an epidural
- 33:46Speaker 1: and later admitted that was the problem again according to
- 33:48Speaker 1: a story that was on his account, and said it's
- 33:52Speaker 1: malpractice and messed him up.
- 33:56Speaker 2: We should bring him on. I don't know.
- 34:00Speaker 1: You don't want to ask him about that.
- 34:01Speaker 2: I don't I don't talk about I don't speculate on
- 34:04Speaker 2: injuries and stuff like that. I don't know. That's it.
- 34:05Speaker 2: That's what he says. And that's the side of the story.
- 34:07Speaker 2: And then you got to get the Giants involved, Okay,
- 34:11Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 34:13Speaker 1: Well, we're probably going to learn about that at some point.
- 34:16Speaker 2: That case, this has been happening for a while though.
- 34:19Speaker 1: What where someone gets hurt Tom Murphy thing, Oh Murphy's thing. Yeah, Well,
- 34:23Speaker 1: because there was what was the Darren ruff had had
- 34:25Speaker 1: something too?
- 34:25Speaker 2: That was he tarp Yeah he.
- 34:33Speaker 1: Was he on the Giants at the time.
- 34:37Speaker 2: Hmmm. I don't know if it was a Giant now
- 34:40Speaker 2: I think it was a Bruce. Here's the Bruce.
- 34:43Speaker 1: Okay, hey we're here. Kyle Hendrix might be here too soon.
- 34:49Speaker 1: He might be in the media. He's definitely gonna do
- 34:51Speaker 1: something great speaker, retiring after twelve years in the big leagues. Congratulations,
- 34:58Speaker 1: nice run World Series.
- 35:00Speaker 2: Jo.
- 35:01Speaker 1: Yeah, did a lot with a little even though that
- 35:04Speaker 1: might not sound fair. I mean, he wasn't pumping a hondo.
- 35:09Speaker 1: It was clinical. The professor was the nickname.
- 35:13Speaker 2: He was on here too.
- 35:15Speaker 6: I'd never talked to him before, and when he came
- 35:16Speaker 6: on here, he was not like because you just see
- 35:18Speaker 6: him walk off the mound after like getting the third
- 35:22Speaker 6: out in the fifth end of the World Series. When
- 35:26Speaker 6: he's on here, he's super engaging, very humble, always talking
- 35:29Speaker 6: about other people. I think, congratulations, what a.
- 35:33Speaker 2: Career media or team he's going front office office? Yeah,
- 35:42Speaker 2: I think he's he's a front He's got front office
- 35:44Speaker 2: written on him some team, and just because the heck,
- 35:49Speaker 2: who knows he might be GM with some team next year.

- 35:53Speaker 2: might Actually he might be too old to be a
- 35:55Speaker 2: GM or manager. At this point, the Rockies are pissed
- 35:58Speaker 2: they made their move too soon. They were like, damn,
- 36:01Speaker 2: we could have offered Carlo instead of getting a guy
- 36:03Speaker 2: from football. We could have got a guy that just
- 36:05Speaker 2: we could have had. We could have had him and
- 36:08Speaker 2: Ottovino at the same time. We could have together. Actually,
- 36:13Speaker 2: hope they had Auto Hindo.
- 36:14Speaker 1: That's a GM or assistant jam in Colorado. I hope
- 36:17Speaker 1: they do
