- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Hey, good morning.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: How are you doing?
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: Welcome here, Mulvain Building and in College Avenue Building.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: And this is a really significant day, by the way, on a couple of calendars on the Christian calendar.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: This is Pentecost Sunday, seven weeks after Easter.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: On the Jewish calendar, Shabuos, that is uh Feast of First Fruits, Feast of Weeks, it's called, the Old Testament translations.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: And the way, by the way, the Orthodox, the Heredi celebrate that nowadays is they stayed up all night last night reading the Torah.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: So these are this is an interesting, significant day for a number of reasons.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: For us, we're going to begin, we're beginning a new series, our summer series called There's an App for That.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: And it's a series on the world's favorite verses.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: How do we know what the world's favorite verses are?
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: Well, we didn't used to before technology.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Can we have a hand for technology?
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, both of you.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Thank you very much.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: Learn to use your cell phones, folks.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: No, but there's a Bible app, there's a number of Bible apps today, but the Bible app called Uversion was one of the first 200 free apps that Apple put up.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Group of people from Edmund, Oklahoma, church called Life Church.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Some of you have heard of Craig Rochelle and his associate pastor, a real techie and some other things, had submitted that.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: So 10 years ago, UVersion became an app, and it became and is still the world's most downloaded Bible app.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: So what that is, is you don't know what an app is.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: I'm not even going to talk to you.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: Just leave.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: No.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: No, no, no.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: But this is where you download verses and chapters, and you can listen to chapters and you can send them to your friends and you can bookmark them and do all of that stuff, right?
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: And there are other Bible apps out there today, but UVersion is, you know, again, it's sometimes just called the Bible app.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: It's by far the most used around the world.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: It offers 1,800 translations of the Bible in over 1,250 languages.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: It's been installed, get this, on 350 million devices.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: That's the word for like cell phone computer, around the world.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: And listen to this.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: On UVersion last year, 27 billion chapters were read.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Get that.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: 4 billion listened to.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: 1.7 were billion highlights, bookmarks, and notes created.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: 950 million.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: Some of you may use their Bible plan where they send you a daily, you know, verse or.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: So 409 million verses were shared, 350 million installations.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: It's on 350 million devices.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: And by the way, there's a U version for kids.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: It's on 27 million devices.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: I know you don't want your kids to have a cell phone, but hey.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: So here's what I thought.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: I was thinking this spring.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: I thought, so, if these verses, and by the way, what UVersion started doing eight years ago is they started recording which verses were the most shared, the most downloaded, the most sent, the most listened to, and so forth.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: And so starting eight years ago, they began at the end of the year, usually mid-December is where they put it out and they said, this is the world's favorite verse this year.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: Sometimes they would break it out.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: North America's favorite verse, South America's, and so forth.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: And I was thinking last month, I was thinking, you know what, if if for a whole year a verse is so cherished, it's so inspirational, it's so challenging, it's so, you know, whatever, why not devote time to those verses which have been so comforting and so inspiring to so many people?
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: So that's gonna be our summer series.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna start with eight years ago, 2012 this morning.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: We're gonna work our way up to 2019.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: I've got an extra, I've got an extra Sunday to use this summer, so I'm gonna ask you to send me this summer by email, by text, by some way, your favorite verse, and then we'll do TBC's favorite verse in August sometime, okay?
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: Will you?
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: If you don't, I'm gonna pick my favorite, so you're you're in trouble.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: So um, anyway, that's what we're gonna do.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: And this morning's verse uh is is get this.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: So you know what I like about these verses?
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: They're not all John 3.16, Jeremiah 29, 11.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: I was just so happy.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: So so they're they're really cool verses that we need to learn better.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: And the verse for this morning is one of the most amazing, remarkable verses in the whole Bible, Philippians 4, 6.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: Philippians 4, 6, you know this verse, right?
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: Be anxious.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: This is the new King James, say it with me.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: So here's what we're gonna do each week this summer.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: On Sunday, I'm gonna break open this verse, we're gonna taste it, we're gonna savor it, roll it around on our tongue, we're gonna listen to its cadence, we're gonna chew it, we're gonna tear it apart, put it back together, gonna study it.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: Maybe you'll wanna memorize it, maybe you'll want to download it to your device, maybe you'll want to send it to your friends.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: But anything we do with this verse sort of puts us in the body of Christ around the world, because the body of Christ around the world in an entire year thought that this was the most comforting, inspiring verse.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: And this verse, you go, when you see this verse, you go, nah, I know why it got picked number one out of 31,000 verses in the Bible, 31,102.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: Because this verse is about something we all know and love.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: Anxiety.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: Worry.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: What?
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: None of you worry?
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: What?
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: Ever since don't worry, be happy, you guys are all, you know.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: No, we all know worry.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: It's this paralyzing kind of a fear.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: It keeps us up late at night.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: It's the fear of what if?
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: The something, the fear that something that we dread might happen.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there are a few people in life that we know, those rare people who never seem to worry.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: President Lyndon Johnson, you know, seemed to be one of those people.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: Once he told a Texas audience who asked how he was doing, he said he was doing fine, that he always did fine because he followed the advice of an old woman who once said, When I walks, I walk slowly.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: When I sits, I sits loosely.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: And when I feels worry coming on, I just goes to sleep.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: So if you're doing that these days, congratulations to you.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: Now I happen to score like zero in worry, but you know what?
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: Doesn't make any difference because sooner or later in my life, and and you know how I know people come up to me and they go every Sunday and they go, that was just the sermon I needed for today.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: And sometimes, like today, the Lord goes, I've got one just for you, even if nobody else needs it.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: So I can't tell you, can't explain to you why.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: This is so helpful for me and Melody right now, but it is.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: Because sooner or later, whoever you are, the demon of worry attacks.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: He slips down your throat like that alien beast in the movie, and he enters into your gut and he wrenches your gut and he erases your heart, and you start to have a panic attack, and acid starts pouring into your stomach, right?
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: And at 2.30 in the morning you wake up and you look at the ceiling and you stare at the clock the rest of the night.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: And worry can disable you, right?
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: It can not only give you panic attacks, it can cause you to huddle in your bed for an extra couple of hours more than normal in the morning.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: Cardiologists say that there's an incidence, worry is related to heart disease and heart attacks.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: Some medical people say that three out of four people who come see them, their illness is related in some way to stress and worry and anxiety.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: Let me confess to you, I'm not sure how I should feel about this, but over my experience, Christians worry just as much and maybe even more, than people who are not Jesus believers and Jesus followers.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: And we worry about all sorts of things.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: By the way, uh, again, the word anxiety is the first word to notice about this.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: I want you to see uh modern translation, this is sort of the Southern Baptist uh Bible, but the Christian Standard Bible, I really like what they do to this verse, and so I'm gonna mainly look at this, but it's other than changing anxiety to worry, it's almost the same as the King James.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: And just for fun, say this one with me too.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: Don't worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: So there's our verse.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: And um the interesting thing is that, I mean, I hate to say this, but the statistics say that right now more of us are worrying than ever before, that more of us, and I think Christians too, are suffused with anxiety, and more of us have insomnia at night.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: We're like David, who said in Psalm 77 to God, you hold my eyelids open.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: I'm so agitated, I cannot sleep.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: Any of you know what insomnia is lately?
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: Isn't that something?
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: Now the statistics show, and now I'm going to Time magazine and U.S.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: News and World Report and Science Alert.
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: So help me out here, um, Terry, if you can move this forward.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: Next slide, thanks.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: So these are headlines just from this last year study.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: Americans are more anxious today than a year ago.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: A lot of, that was Science Alert, a lot of Americans are more anxious than they were last year, new poll.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: And the poll actually showed that 40% of Americans, 40% more than a year ago, are what we would call suffering from an anxiety disorder.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: America really is in the midst of a rising anxiety epidemic.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: So listen, even if you're not a follower of Jesus, welcome, you know, as always, welcome, but you know exactly what this is about because I mean there's a lot of things to worry about these days.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: And we worry primarily about five things, the survey shows.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: We worry about health, we worry about safety, we worry about finances, we worry about relationships, and we worry, of course, about politics.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: So let's take those one at a time.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: We worry about health, don't we?
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: We worry that we might get cancer, we worry that we might get sick, we worry that maybe our parents might get Alzheimer's, we worry about getting disabled and going into a nursing home, right?
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: Worry about our all of our friends that way.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: We worry about safety, we worry about being in an accident, we worry about being a victim of a crime, our home getting broken into, our car getting broken into.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: We worry about health, we worry about safety.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: Of course, we worry about finances.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: I mean, who of us hasn't woken up in the middle of the night and thought, what if the economy looks like it's crashing or my company says that they're, you know, gonna do a turnover, they need to save money, what if they cut my job?
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: What if they lay off people?
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: What if I'm one of them?
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: What if my wife has to go back to work?
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: How are the bills gonna get paid?
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: How what kind of a job can I get now that I'm in midlife anyway?
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: And you begin having a panic attack.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: You don't want to wake up your wife, so you start breathing deeply, you know, and you look at the clock again, and now it's moved from 3 o'clock to 3.45, and all night you end up crossing bridges before you come to them because of finances.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: We also worry, of course, about relationships.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: We worry about what we said to that person the day before.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: We wonder why they ambushed us, we wonder why we have that conflict.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: We wish we could go back and replay it or redo it.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: We worry about our relationships.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: And finally, of course, we worry about politics.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: Need I say more?
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: We all worry about politics.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: Now, those are the four, you know, the fearsome five, but they're just the beginning, for heaven's sake.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: We also worry about getting old.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: We worry about dying.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: We worry about our parents dying, we worry about, you know.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: Our loved ones, we worry about our children, for heaven's sake.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: Don't we worry about our children?
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: We worry that our children we want them so desperately to do well in school.
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: We want them so desperately not to have a get into a sexually compromising situation.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: We worry about them with drugs and alcohol.
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: We're concerned about how are we gonna pay their way through college and how are they gonna get into a good college and how are they gonna do at college?
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: And are they gonna meet somebody who's a Christian girl or a boy at college?
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: Are they gonna get married?
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: Well, they're gonna leave college and find a decent job.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: Oh my goodness, do we worry about our children?
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: Thank God, minor grown.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: So, um, so now I'm worrying about my grandchildren, but you know, the one I've got sitting on the front row here, I don't worry about him at all.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: He's he's got it made.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: And we worry about the way the whole world is going, right?
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: And we worry about if you're really good at worrying, you know, there's a woman in our church.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: This is really funny.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: You even worry about things going too well.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: So she's in a Bible study group, and everybody's sharing about their crises and so forth, and she says, Wow, I had a tough time, so I just said, actually, this is the happiest time of my life.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: I have a husband who loves me.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: I have three healthy kids, and I can't enjoy any of it because I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: So we even have problems with having good days.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: So there are three parts to this verse.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: Let's get into this amazing, amazing, amazing uh verse.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: Okay, so there are three parts to this.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: And it actually, you know the verse?
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: Let me just say really quickly, I want you to glance at where Paul had his devotions that morning, because his the words of this verse, everyone agrees, are sort of a semi remembering of what Jesus said years before.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: So maybe he had his devotions in the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus said, How come, why do you worry?
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: Don't worry, don't worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: Each day has enough trouble of its own.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: Now, Jesus actually seems to be addressing that person that you know, who, like if you have a teenager, you send her to clean her room, and she opens the door and she sees that not only is the floor full of clothes, but the bed's unmade and the closet's a mess, and the kids in the bathroom, and the job gets so big, and she goes, It's too big a job.
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: She gets paralyzed and shuts the door again.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: Before we make fun of her, guys, let's talk about us.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: Your wife says, Would you clean the garage?
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: And you look out at the garage, she says, I'd like to get my car in there sometime.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: And you look out there, and it is such a mess that it's more than a one-hour, two-hour, three-hour, one-day job, and all of a sudden it's so big.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: You go all do that another time.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: And what you're doing, of course, is you're getting paralyzed with worry because the job is way too big for today.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: Today's list, today's job you could do.
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: And then another two tomorrow.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: And it seems like that's what the Lord's saying to those of us who tend to freak out.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: He's he's saying, you know what?
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: Let tomorrow worry about itself.
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: People don't collapse under the burdens of today, they collapse when they bring tomorrow's burdens into today.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: So that seems to be the passage that Paul is looking at, but frankly, Paul takes that passage a lot farther.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: That passage, by the way, is well illustrated by the cartoon where Linus says to Charlie Brown, I guess it's wrong always to be worrying about tomorrow.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: Maybe we should think only about today.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: Linus has read Jesus' words in Matthew 6.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: Charlie hasn't.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: And Charlie says in reply, no, that's giving up.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: I'm still hoping that yesterday will get better.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: Which we do.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: So uh back to our incredible text.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: I'm going to take you through the three parts of this text, all right?
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: The anxious for nothing.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: So we've already talked about anxiety.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: That's the problem.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: It's the problem we need to get rid of.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: Part two, prayer.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: That's the prescription.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: It kind of looks like it's an alternative, but you know, I tend to think this is the bridge that moves you from point A to point B, which is peace.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: Point one, anxiety or worry, and that's the problem that you need to put off, get rid of.
- 17:16SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: Point two is prayer in the Christian standard.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: So that's these four words.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: And notice, notice there's the four words used in the New Testament for prayer are all stuck right next to each other here.
- 17:30SPEAKER_00: Prayer, petition, thanksgiving, request.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: These three prayer, petition, and requests, are really close synonyms.
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: Thanksgiving is an outlier.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: So prayer is the general word, it's the most common used word for prayer in the New Testament.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: All right?
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: Petition gets specific.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: It's like, what are you worried about?
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: What do you want to take to the Lord?
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: What should you be taking to the Lord?
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: Request gets even more specific.
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: It says, state specifically what you'd like the Lord to do.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: God's tired of vague prayers, doesn't like general prayers.
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: Actually, he says you're worrying about specific things, so why don't you dump those, take those to me, roll them on to me, cast them on me, share them with me, talk to me about those.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: Now, notice the fourth one, this is different.
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: This is the overlooked one.
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: I say that from personal knowledge, because I'm studying this this week and I'm thinking, oh my.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: I mean, I thank the Lord a lot, but not usually in my worry prayers.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: You know, the prayers where I'm really concerned, you know, about my life, my kids, my future, you know, whatever else.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: I usually share maybe my requests, but I don't do the Thanksgiving.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: This is the huge, neglected one.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: We're we're right in the middle.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: I mean, I know Thanksgiving is important because in Romans 1, Thanksgiving is the sole difference between the godly and the ungodly.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: Remember, the godly go to Grand Canyon or the stars and they give God thanks, but the those who are ungodly who were headed the opposite direction, they weren't even thankful.
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: God says, so I know it's important, but to bring it into a worry prayer is not something that I tend to do.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: But as I thought about it this week, I thought exactly what am I supposed to thank him for?
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: And I found as I practiced this week that, wow, well, for one thing, I go, thank you, Lord, that you're powerful enough to take care of this.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: Thanks, Lord, that you're in control of everything.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: Then I realized, thank you, Lord, that whatever happens, since you've said that all things work together for good to those who love God, whatever happens is going to be a good thing.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: Even if it's not the thing I exactly am asking you to do.
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: And then I realized, I started praying, Lord, thank you for what I'm going through as a result of this.
- 20:06SPEAKER_00: Thank you for how this is shaping me and making me and my family and my loved ones a better person.
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: You see how this sort of shapes your prayer and makes the flavor different instead of fingers around God's neck saying, Do this, this is my request, I want this now, all of a sudden it becomes a little more humble when you start thanking him for what he's doing now and what he's going to do.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: And it makes it really, you know, kind of a prayer of faith, doesn't it?
- 20:40SPEAKER_00: Or by you're you're releasing it and you're and you're just giving it to God.
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: Sort of like a woman wakes up in the middle of the night, she sees her husband, it's 3 a.m.
- 20:51SPEAKER_00: She sees him pacing the bedroom.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: She goes, What in the world are you doing?
- 20:55SPEAKER_00: He says, I haven't told you, but a year ago I borrowed$5,000 from Sam next door.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: It's due tomorrow.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: I don't have it.
- 21:04SPEAKER_00: I can't pay it.
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: She says, Oh, don't worry about it.
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: We'll work on it tomorrow.
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: I can't.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: He says, I can't stop thinking about it.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: She jumps out of bed, she goes to the window, she she opens the window and she starts yelling, Sam! Sam! Finally, the window opens to the house next door, and Sam leans out groggily goes, What?
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: What is it?
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: She says, You know that$5,000 my husband owes you that he's supposed to pay tomorrow?
- 21:31SPEAKER_00: He says, Yeah.
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: She says, he doesn't have it.
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: And she slams the window down.
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: She goes back to bed, she says, There, you come to bed and let him worry about it now.
- 21:42SPEAKER_00: So you go, Wow, wouldn't it be nice to be able to give your worries to someone else?
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: And guess what?
- 21:49SPEAKER_00: God says, Yeah, why don't you do that with me?
- 21:51SPEAKER_00: Why don't you open the window?
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: Why don't you call out to me in heaven?
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: Why don't you give me your worry and then slam your window down and go to bed and stop worrying?
- 21:59SPEAKER_00: I want you to.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Roll your worries onto me.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: Make them specific, include thanksgiving.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: Because after all, God says, I want you to do that, get these two words, in everything.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: Have you noticed that you only tend to take your worry prayers to God when they're the big things, those other things?
- 22:21SPEAKER_00: You go like, well, I can handle that one myself.
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: And yet God says, I want you to pray without ceasing.
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: I want you to be, I want you to practice for the big worry prayers by flinging everything up to me.
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: This week for me, it was like, Jim, you know that there's a broken pipe or something in your front yard because you can't mow your whole front yard, and for a week or two you've got these lakes out in your front yard, and you don't know whether it's your pipe or the city's pipe, and you said something to the city and they came over and said, Oh, it'll go away.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: It'll, you know, it's been a rainy, you know, so forth.
- 22:52SPEAKER_00: You know, and so you're planning to handle that, but you haven't even talked to me about that?
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: You know, you're about to teach on this verse that says, in everything, don't you think that would probably be included?
- 23:03SPEAKER_00: You know how this goes, and so you so if I go through life or you go through life and we make it our practice to pray to him about everything, Paul even said, whether you eat or drink, whatever you do, then with our prayers and petitions and requests with thanksgiving, we are in a sense trusting God, believing God, opening the window, flinging it over onto him, and leaving it with him.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: And if we don't, it's sort of an act of unbelief.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: We're sort of like grandma who'd never flown on a plane, and her family's convincing her the only way that you're gonna get all the way up to California, you've got to fly on the plane.
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: So finally, reluctantly, she gets on that contraption for the first time, and she's scared to death, you know.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: And so they're all excited to find out how it went.
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: So the family goes to the airport, grandma flies back into the airport and she comes off and so forth.
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: And and teenage boy, you know, can't can't stand just letting it happen.
- 24:01SPEAKER_00: And so he says, Hey grandma, how'd you do on the plane?
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: Did it get you here and back here uh okay?
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: And she says, Yes.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: But I never did put my full weight down on it.
- 24:15SPEAKER_00: That's sort of sometimes how we are.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: Our unbelief makes us not put our full weight down on it.
- 24:23SPEAKER_00: And I have this to-do list, and I realize that that to-do list for today is supposed to become a prayer list.
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: Everything in everything on that prayer list, I take that to God.
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: And that's faith, that's trust, that's turning it over to Him.
- 24:43SPEAKER_00: And if I don't do that, then I'm like a little boy who goes to his mommy every day and says, Will you really take care of me?
- 24:52SPEAKER_00: I'm not sure you will.
- 24:53SPEAKER_00: I'm scared today.
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: Will you really take care of me?
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: And does it every single day and just breaks his mother's heart and he lives under a cloud because he's not trusting the Lord every day for that day, small and big.
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: And then there's this amazing promise.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: You cross over the bridge of prayer, this prescription, this procedure, and you get to this remarkable result, by the way.
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: I love this little.
- 25:21SPEAKER_00: You ever seen that book, Children's Letters to God?
- 25:24SPEAKER_00: It's a pretty old book by now, but one of those letters in that book goes, You're pretty busy, dear God, you're pretty busy.
- 25:29SPEAKER_00: Now here's my question.
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: When's the best time I can talk to you?
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: I know you're always listening, but when will you be listening hard in Troy, New York?
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: Sincerely yours, Alan.
- 25:39SPEAKER_00: And God would say to you, He's listening hard, he's listening hard to you whenever you pray, whenever you pray about anything and everything, because you're really precious to him.
- 25:48SPEAKER_00: You're like his child.
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: In fact, you are.
- 25:52SPEAKER_00: So the third stage then, the first stage, remember, is the problem, anxiety.
- 25:57SPEAKER_00: The second stage is the prescription, which is prayer, and the third stage is, and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
- 26:07SPEAKER_00: Or in the Christian standard, and the peace of God.
- 26:10SPEAKER_00: Let's stop right there.
- 26:11SPEAKER_00: This phrase is only used one time in the New Testament.
- 26:15SPEAKER_00: Guess where?
- 26:17SPEAKER_00: Good, yeah, right there.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: Thanks, thanks.
- 26:19SPEAKER_00: Just wanted to make sure you're with me.
- 26:21SPEAKER_00: So otherwise, you have these phrases like you've heard of peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 26:26SPEAKER_00: That's a different thing.
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: God gives us that peace with God when we believe on Him, we look at the Son on the cross, trust Him as our Savior, and that alienation, the broken downness between us and God is healed, and all of a sudden we have a reconciliation, kind of a peace with God, between us and him.
- 26:42SPEAKER_00: That's peace with God.
- 26:44SPEAKER_00: This is a different thing.
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: This is different even than peace from God, which the Bible talks about.
- 26:48SPEAKER_00: It says that if you're walking with God and you're quoting his promises, then he will give you a kind of peace which washes over you and helps you all the time.
- 26:57SPEAKER_00: This is saying something actually more than that.
- 27:01SPEAKER_00: Because this is the peace of God.
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: This is God's own peace.
- 27:09SPEAKER_00: This is the shalom, Old Testament Hebrew, Irene, if your name's Irene.
- 27:14SPEAKER_00: This is the shalom or Irene that God Himself possesses.
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: It is the serenity of the Trinity.
- 27:22SPEAKER_00: You like that?
- 27:23SPEAKER_00: I made that up.
- 27:23SPEAKER_00: It's the serenity of God's own character, and he says, I'm going to share with you the supernatural peace that I have lived in and dwelt in since before the beginning of time.
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: And if you will only roll over your worries and anxieties onto me, then I am going to give you an incredible gift.
- 27:47SPEAKER_00: I'm going to give you my own peace.
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: It's the peace of God.
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: No wonder he says it surpasses all understanding, or literally, it transcends all mind.
- 28:02SPEAKER_00: And I mean, I think he's saying just really simply, of course it transcends all understanding.
- 28:08SPEAKER_00: All of the peace that you and I manufacture with our techniques, which are not bad.
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: I have these techniques when I get worried.
- 28:16SPEAKER_00: Like I like to imagine what's the worst thing that could happen, and then sort of prepare myself for that.
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: You're so morbid.
- 28:23SPEAKER_00: No, I'm not morbid, but I just, that's one way of handling it.
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: Or, you know, you listen to Christian music or talk with your Christian friends or whatever regularly and share it with them.
- 28:33SPEAKER_00: Those are great things to do.
- 28:34SPEAKER_00: This is a whole nother level.
- 28:37SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 28:37SPEAKER_00: Those are human, earthly, wise techniques.
- 28:41SPEAKER_00: But this surpasses all comprehension because it's not earthly, it's supernatural, it's something the earth doesn't possess.
- 28:49SPEAKER_00: It's from the Godhead himself.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: His serenity comes down.
- 28:54SPEAKER_00: And by the way, I think this could also mean, since it's uh it's it transcends mind, I think it means it transcends your best way to figure out how to solve things.
- 29:05SPEAKER_00: Because when you talk to your friend about your stresses or worries, you know the first thing she or he says is it's always like, yeah, you really do have something to worry about.
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: You got a half a dozen reasons why you should worry.
- 29:17SPEAKER_00: And the answer is, no, you know what?
- 29:19SPEAKER_00: No, this is something higher.
- 29:22SPEAKER_00: And it's why you don't need to worry.
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: And God will give you that special serenity of the Trinity, and it will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
- 29:32SPEAKER_00: And you can be forgiven if when you heard the word guard, you thought of a security guard or a policeman or military, because that's what that word is.
- 29:39SPEAKER_00: It's a military word, which is perfectly appropriate because Paul is writing these words as a guard paces outside his Roman cell, and he's writing it to Philippi, which is a Roman garrison in Asia, where they had guards and military people everywhere.
- 29:54SPEAKER_00: And the reason you need guards is why?
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: Because there are enemies out, and there is an enemy here, and it is, as I began the sermon, the demon of Marimnos.
- 30:04SPEAKER_00: It is the demon of worry.
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: No matter how godly you are, no matter how capable you are, you do not have the power to control your own heart and mind at 3.30 in the morning.
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: There's some things inside you you do not have the power to control.
- 30:23SPEAKER_00: You can control a lot of life, but you need supernatural help at that time of night.
- 30:28SPEAKER_00: And God sends something called God's peace, one of his greatest soldiers perhaps, to come and to guard you against the demon of worry that will come against you and will defy you and will keep you awake and will ruin your life.
- 30:46SPEAKER_00: And God says, Let me send my peace and let me deliver you.
- 30:53SPEAKER_00: So uh I had a picture here even of a demon and how God will solve your problem.
- 30:59SPEAKER_00: Actually, I think the most important thing is for me to summarize this verse.
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: If you can advance this, Terry, I'd really appreciate it.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: If you can't, uh, we're fine.
- 31:07SPEAKER_00: So here's the theme of these verses, and the theme goes like this Exchange, exchange your worry for the peace of God by taking it to the Lord in thankful prayer.
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: Exchange your worry for the peace of God by taking it to the Lord.
- 31:36SPEAKER_00: Oh, there's a demon who's got his hands around your neck, and God says, you know what, I can protect you from that.
- 31:42SPEAKER_00: I'm going to send my soldier, and he's going to guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
- 31:49SPEAKER_00: So here's what I want you to remember.
- 31:50SPEAKER_00: Here's the final slide that I want to show you.
- 31:53SPEAKER_00: And this is the summary of this.
- 31:55SPEAKER_00: If you can advance it, Terry, I'd appreciate it.
- 31:57SPEAKER_00: I can't.
- 31:57SPEAKER_00: Exchange your worry for peace by taking it to the Lord in thankful prayer.
- 32:03SPEAKER_00: Thanks for saying amen.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: So, you know, I feel like we know this at a gut level 75 years ago.
- 32:12SPEAKER_00: We certainly knew it.
- 32:13SPEAKER_00: 75 years ago was D-Day, three days ago, 75 years ago, we woke up and found out.
- 32:21SPEAKER_00: America did, Canada did, that the night, early that morning, night before, our troops had landed in Normandy.
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: That Roosevelt had spoken in his weekly address the night before, and surely had known, but of course couldn't say, that the invasion of France to go after the Nazis was happening even as he spoke.
- 32:47SPEAKER_00: And we were terrified.
- 32:49SPEAKER_00: America was terrified.
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: American people were terrified, not only not only because their sons were over there in danger of dying, and many of them did on that bloody beach.
- 32:59SPEAKER_00: Terrified because the Nazi war machine seemed unbeatable.
- 33:04SPEAKER_00: And the response of America, North America entirely, Canada as well, was prayer.
- 33:15SPEAKER_00: Nearly every city and every hamlet and every village in America had a proclamation by their mayor calling their people to prayer.
- 33:25SPEAKER_00: Thousands upon thousands of businesses across our country and in Canada closed down that day.
- 33:32SPEAKER_00: The churches opened up at noon, started having services every day that night, that first night, President Roosevelt, and you can listen to this wonderful prayer on YouTube.
- 33:41SPEAKER_00: I did it near prayed nearly six minutes, a prayer, nearly six minutes long.
- 33:46SPEAKER_00: Astounding.
- 33:49SPEAKER_00: Taking our worries to the Lord and prayer.
- 33:53SPEAKER_00: In fact, it was interesting.
- 33:54SPEAKER_00: In midweek, this last week, uh Toronto, Canada, a newspaper up there ran uh a whole article detailing D-Day and fascinating said the number one response across our country, Canada, to the invasion at Normandy was prayer.
- 34:15SPEAKER_00: Newspaper today said that.
- 34:18SPEAKER_00: And people knelt all over this country to take it to the Lord in prayer.
- 34:23SPEAKER_00: And God says, I'm asking you with the worries that you have, I'm asking you to do exactly the same thing.
- 34:29SPEAKER_00: I'm asking you to take those worries and exchange those worries for my incredible divine peace by simply taking it to me in thankful prayer.
- 34:40SPEAKER_00: Will you do that?
- 34:43SPEAKER_00: Let's, you know, think there's there's these great words written 150 years ago.
- 34:49SPEAKER_00: What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to prayer to bear.
- 34:55SPEAKER_00: Uh oh, what needless uh uh pain we bear all because we don't take it to him in prayer, something like that.
- 35:05SPEAKER_00: I'll tell you what, I'll have my son come out and lead us in that song in a minute, but let's go to prayer right now.
- 35:09SPEAKER_00: Heavenly Father, we we do thank you for this sort of a formula that you give us, the fact that uh we have a choice, really, between the prayer prayer is sort of the negatively if we don't do it.
- 35:25SPEAKER_00: It takes us to anxiety and positively if we do do it.
- 35:28SPEAKER_00: It gives us supernatural peace.
- 35:31SPEAKER_00: And I pray for all of us this week that we will take advantage of this incredible promise and find in it a comfort.
- 35:38SPEAKER_00: In Jesus' name.
- 35:40SPEAKER_00: Amen.
