- 0:02This is an Unspoiled Network podcast. This is spoil Me, covering one Piece
- 0:12episodes three eighty and three eighty one, Bink's Booze, the song that connects
- 0:21the past with the present, and a new crewmate, the musician Humming Brook.
- 0:29In these episodes, I won't say that I had dry eyes the whole
- 0:40time. That's as close as I'm getting to admitting that I wept openly.
- 0:49Welcome to spoil Me. Welcome to the show everyone. I am Natasha and
- 1:15I'm Trish. Those listening, there may be a little bit of a lag
- 1:22because I think that there's a disconnect. So when I introduced myself, there's
- 1:27a good like four or five seconds before you introduced yourself. I think that
- 1:30we have a bit of a Internet lag between us, So that's what maybe
- 1:36going on. But I always take the sound off of crowdcasts, so normally
- 1:41I can sort of line things up if I have two different files, but
- 1:44I won't be able to do that this time, So everybody just bear with
- 1:47us on that. But I'm just going to pause extra long and assume that
- 1:52Trish is going to chime in. Thank you very much for joining me.
- 1:57Tell me why you chose these episodes of us Cruel Cruel Soul. Uh,
- 2:07Well, I mean what you're implying there is. The primary reason is uh,
- 2:10these episodes make me weep. I rewatched them this morning for this episode,
- 2:15and I cried a lot. And it's it's funny because I do.
- 2:22These episodes really stick out to me, and I really wanted to be the
- 2:24one to talk to you about them. It just feels funny to be doing
- 2:29it. Also because this is one of I don't want to say this is
- 2:34a bad arc of One Piece, but I would say in the annals of
- 2:38arcs of One Piece, Thriller Bark is not one I'm usually interested in revisiting
- 2:43very much. Okay, it's kind of more meth for me. But this,
- 2:49this episode, all the Brook stuff is fantastic. It's so good.
- 2:53These episodes are so good, and it's almost enough to make me forget the
- 2:59parts of the middle where I was just couple like, oh yeah, I
- 3:01can definitely see myself like looking back, conflating enjoying Brooke with being like Thriller
- 3:10Bark was a good arc. Even though I really enjoyed Thriller Bark, I
- 3:14didn't love the ending. I felt like it fell a little bit flat,
- 3:17but I still really enjoyed it. But yeah, I think that Brooke does
- 3:22a lot of heavy lifting on this, you guys. So last week I
- 3:31fucking just cried talking about Laboon because it was making me think of how I'm
- 3:38going to have to give up Sam eventually, and that was just devastating.
- 3:46This couple of episodes, it was like a one two punch of the whole
- 3:53Laboon abandonment and the guilt and wanting to get back to him, and then
- 3:58also really getting to see what Brooke went through and there are I really feel
- 4:09like if I were a kid watching this, it would not hit me the
- 4:14same way. There is just something about the energy of this when you have
- 4:19got like grown enough that you have begun to lose people in your life,
- 4:25that makes it hit so much harder. I was just not ready, kids,
- 4:32I really I didn't think that we were going to see any more of
- 4:35Brooks past. Honestly, I thought that finding out about his connection with Laboon
- 4:41was going to be kind of it. And when this started this section and
- 4:46I saw that we were going to be spending more time with him again,
- 4:47I was really like surprised, thinking, wait, does he already get reunited
- 4:54with Laboon because I didn't I thought if we were with him, that was
- 4:58going to have to be the focus. I didn't think there was enough interest
- 5:00in what happened with him and his crewmates to to keep a whole couple of
- 5:08episodes afloat, basically, But I'm getting ahead of myself here, so I'm
- 5:15gonna start this episode so we can have it on in the background. But
- 5:18I just want to mention that in on Funimation this episode is called Binks's Booze,
- 5:25but on Hulu it's called Binks's Brew. Yeah. I don't know what's
- 5:32up with that that. It's a bit of confusion. And I can tell
- 5:36why they went with the Binks's Brew because the way they translated the song Brew
- 5:43was in there for a rhyme. Originally, A lot of the fans will
- 5:47call the song Binks's Sake instead, because that's what it is originally. Why
- 5:54they changed it from ok to Brew. Brewis a lot easier to rhyme in
- 5:58English, and also just sake doesn't have the same kind of cultural like attachment.
- 6:06Yeah, that's like Binks's Brew Wood in English, Like I think they
- 6:12personally, I don't know how other people are going to react. I think
- 6:15they translated the song really well. In terms of how you adapt. It's
- 6:19really hard to adapt Japanese songs in an anime into English and have it not
- 6:25sound terrible. Yeah, because you know you're dealing with different rhythm, you're
- 6:30dealing with different syllabic meters, things like that. You know what rhymes what
- 6:33doesn't is going to change, and I think they handled it well. And
- 6:36also An Sinclair, who plays the dubbed voice for Brook is just he has
- 6:43a really great singing voice. He's amazing, just a good voice in general.
- 6:47Yes, definitely, Yeah. I was figuring that it was Binks's Booze
- 6:54on Funimation because they don't care as much about trying to make the titles like
- 7:00kid appropriate, Like maybe Brew is sort of ambiguous enough about it being alcohol
- 7:04that they felt like it was more appropriate. But it's not like, as
- 7:11far as I have noticed, the episodes on Hulu have Sanji sucking a lollipop
- 7:15instead of a cigarette, So I don't know how preoccupied they actually are with
- 7:19that. I really agree, though I was thinking about sorry, go ahead,
- 7:29I was just gonna say I think it could be a case of on
- 7:32Funimation on somewhat services it says Binks's Booze because they had it up there before
- 7:40the dub got there, and so when the dub got there, originally they're
- 7:44just translating it and they're like, oh, we'll call it Binks's Booze,
- 7:46And then the dub gets there and they're like, we can't. Binks's Booze
- 7:49is not going to rhyme as well as Binks's Bruise, So they changed that,
- 7:53and then the title is just left the same because it's an artifact of
- 7:56the original translate that would make sense, Okay, I accept that. Yeah,
- 8:03I was thinking the same, like thinking about the aspect of the translation,
- 8:07like in the original, is the tune basically the same or is the
- 8:11tune different as well? Please don't quote me on this. I believe the
- 8:18tune is the same, Okay. It's the lyrics that, you know,
- 8:22we're adapted and changed. Okay. Yeah, that is something that like,
- 8:28even translating from a song in Spanish to English can be pretty tricky, and
- 8:33you know, Spanish has a lot of the same syllables, even words that
- 8:37sound so similar in English that you can sometimes stick with the same rhyming scheme
- 8:41and everything, like, and that's still very tricky even just because of like,
- 8:46you know, sort of jokes in another language don't necessarily translate well,
- 8:52so you have to almost invent a whole new joke for that spot in the
- 8:54song sometimes. So yeah, I just was like fascinated by how well this
- 9:01song worked in the context of like it being a nostalgic link for Brooke,
- 9:07because that's what music is for so many of us, is you listen to
- 9:11songs that remind you of the best parts of your life so far, the
- 9:16times where you felt the happiest or the most secure, or you know,
- 9:20like and I enjoy when something is able to get that energy across, because
- 9:28it's a difficult thing to do when you're watching a movie or a TV show
- 9:35where you weren't there for everything. You know, Brooke, we're finding out
- 9:39about his history, and the goal here is to get us back to the
- 9:46present where he's singing the song and have us understand how he's feeling as he's
- 9:52playing the song. And that's a really like tall order to have us in
- 9:56the same headspace as him, you know, And I feel like they really
- 10:00he managed it quite well, are you The question no, sorry, go
- 10:07ahead, this is the lag I was gonna say, yeah, I was
- 10:11gonna say they. I think they managed to pull that off simply because they
- 10:16used Binks's brew this song as a kind of perfect trying to think like like
- 10:22a thread between all these different points of his life, between his time with
- 10:28the pirates, his time with Laboon, his time alone on the ship as
- 10:33a skeleton, and now in the present, and it weaves all of those
- 10:37things together because each of them are connected to this song and all the different
- 10:41points of his life, and so they're able to jump back and forth and
- 10:43back and forth in a way that feels pretty seamless and allows you to get
- 10:50a lot of information about his life and a lot of context really clearly.
- 10:54And the juxtaposition of him at his happiest with his crewmates and him alone in
- 11:01horrible isolation for decades. It's just, yeah, it's too much. Um
- 11:11what I had been going to ask you, And I know this is kind
- 11:13of an off topic question, but you know that's just how I do.
- 11:18UM. Are you a reader of the Hunger Games series? I have read
- 11:26the Hunger Game series. It has to read a ballad of songbirds and snakes.
- 11:31The latest one to come out that they're making a movie of. Oh
- 11:37no, I didn't even know that existed. Oh it weirdly did kind of
- 11:41fly under the radar. Yeah, I've read. I've read the Hunger Game
- 11:46series back in like twenty eleven, twenty twelve ish and saw the movies that
- 11:50I came out and was largely like, all right, those were okay adaptations,
- 11:54I guess, and then like, it's just kind of been off my
- 11:56radar otherwise, So I wasn't as a fourth book apparently, Yeah, it's
- 12:01a it's a prequel and it's about President's snow as like a teen A real
- 12:11weird choice in my opinion, And I read it and I didn't hate it.
- 12:16But I will say that the audio books for the original trilogy are read.
- 12:20They were originally read by somebody else, but they've been reread by Tatiana
- 12:24Muslani, the actress who plays she Hulk and who was in Orphan Black.
- 12:31She's excellent, And I think that maybe because of the movies, they had
- 12:37the actual tune for some of the songs that happened throughout the books, because
- 12:41Catanis sings a number of different times, so when Tatiana is reading the audio
- 12:46book to you, she will actually sing during those moments instead of just reading
- 12:52the words, and it makes those moments like a thousand percent more haunting.
- 13:00And then I read Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which has a male audiobook
- 13:05narrator, and they do not have the music for the songs he's reading.
- 13:11And that story, just for anybody who's interested, relies so much more heavily
- 13:18on music for its storyline than the original trilogy. But he's just reading the
- 13:24song lyrics repeatedly, over and over with no tune and no real context like
- 13:31in the moment, and it doesn't work. And I was really startled because
- 13:35I have a hard time sometimes when I'm reading something that has lots of poetry
- 13:39or lots of song breaks like Lord of the Rings is a classic example where
- 13:45just everything causes people to break into song. And it's fucking like, you
- 13:48know, two full pages of poetry and you're just like, yeah, okay,
- 13:52I get it. The trees were very yellow. But when you're hearing
- 13:58it, the effect that it has when it's well done and the music like
- 14:03catches you and there's an energy to it. Oh my god, it's just
- 14:09beyond belief and It was remarkable to me how well I responded to it in
- 14:13the context of the one book where she's actually singing it, and then the
- 14:16narrator just reading the words. I wanted to reach through the pages and strangle
- 14:22the author for doing this to me. I was just like, we don't
- 14:24care, stop telling me the words of this song. So when this one
- 14:30starts, like the title of this episode is like the song that you know
- 14:35brings his life together, I was like, ah, boy, songs,
- 14:41I guess even though I know, like we have seen the way that Brooke
- 14:48like he sings, he plays instruments, like we know that he's good at
- 14:52that, but I just went into it was such a bad attitude and I
- 14:56was really shown what a bitch I can be. In summary, the show
- 15:03said, go sit down, I mean listen. Sometimes it's really remarkable if
- 15:11my attitude, like if you can turn me around when I come into something
- 15:15with a bad attitude and you can make me go all right, and I
- 15:16was really wrong. You must have been excellent, because my attitude can sink
- 15:22a show, you know, like anyway, all right? From the chat.
- 15:31From the chat, Florian said that he has really enjoyed listening to the
- 15:35song both in English, German and the original Japanese. Nice a great Uh.
- 15:41Jessica agrees that the translation was really well done and that it couldn't have
- 15:45been easy, and Gus said that apparently in an interview or one of the
- 15:48sps things in the manga, Oba or Oda wrote that binks Osaka was written
- 15:54ahead of the arc, and he basically wrote the arc so he could include
- 15:58the song or something that effect, and that I can see that. Yeah,
- 16:07it's just I'd forgotten it's been a while since I've seen these episodes when
- 16:11I got to the point in the song when it's like it gets the point
- 16:15where it's basically like, hey, you know, we all die someday,
- 16:17so just have a good time being a pirate on the open seas while you're
- 16:21doing it, and it's the way that's described as one day you'll become a
- 16:23skeleton. And I was just like, oh, oh, that's that feels
- 16:29like that moment when like the lyrics and the music kind of hit in a
- 16:32way you're like, I am very just you managed to pull that off and
- 16:34I wasn't even expecting it. Yep. I really I like the idea of
- 16:40writing a song and Bean like I have to do something to fit this end.
- 16:42I love the shit, like this is a banger. I'm writing an
- 16:47arc for it. What a great way to do things. Uh, definitely,
- 16:52But yeah, it's just I mean the thing I were skipping around a
- 16:56bunch. But the thing that hits me the most from this episode, like
- 17:02that sticks to me the most is the them all playing the song together as
- 17:07they're dying on the ship gun he narrates it goes from a quartet to a
- 17:11trio to a duet, and then he's upset that he's left the accompaniment by
- 17:17himself, and it's like, oh, it's just heart wresting. And it
- 17:22would have been so easy for that moment to be almost silly, because it
- 17:27is kind of silly, like just in a vacuum is poisoned and they're all
- 17:33dying at the same time and at the sea, and there's like one by
- 17:37one as they're singing, and they all agreed to sing in their final moments,
- 17:41like it is silly, But it was just the under There was something
- 17:48almost understated about it, which is not something I say about this show very
- 17:52often, but I think it was. It was the performance of Brooke when
- 17:57he is with his friends who are dying. There's no like screaming to the
- 18:03heavens, there's no I can't believe this is happening. He's just playing and
- 18:08like acknowledging that one of them has fallen. But he doesn't stop, and
- 18:12he doesn't like there's just a very little melodrama about the way he reacts to
- 18:21it. And I think that's part of what sort of got under my skin.
- 18:25And then the part that stood with me, And I'm definitely gonna start
- 18:30crying, so sorry about this. I don't like crying when there's somebody else
- 18:34on the chat with me, So sorry about it, Trish, the dream
- 18:44that they are alive again. Oh, you guys, anybody who has lost
- 18:51some money, there is no way that you haven't had a dream that they
- 18:56are alive again. That it's just part of losing someone. And it's always
- 19:03so weird, Like I dream about my dad a lot, and in the
- 19:07dream, I'm always like, oh my god, we haven't talked in so
- 19:10long. Why haven't I given you a call? It's like, I know
- 19:12we haven't talked, but the fact that he's gone isn't part of the memory.
- 19:18It's just this vague sense of like, oh my god, you haven't
- 19:22met Owen. I can't believe that I didn't bring you to meet Owen.
- 19:25Things like that, and then I wake up and it's like kind of losing
- 19:30him again, you know. And it's just it's like, I don't know
- 19:36what I would rather not having those dreams so I don't have to experience the
- 19:40waking up, but having them it's like a little bit of a piece of
- 19:45him again. So I don't know what I would rather have, you know,
- 19:52But that that moment of like he really thinks I hurt myself when I
- 19:59fell, that proves it's not a dream. And of course we as viewers
- 20:03are like, um, Brooke, I don't know how to tell you this,
- 20:07buddy, but that's definitely a dream. And yet it goes on for
- 20:11just long enough that you start to be like, wait, what is going
- 20:14on here? And then he looks up and they're gone, y'all stab me
- 20:21in the heart like that. I mean, I've definitely had that kind of
- 20:30experience before as well. But I'm currently recording from a different place than I
- 20:37did the last couple of times because I'm going to be doing a big moat
- 20:41move from the West coast to the East Coast soon and before that, I'm
- 20:44staying. I've been here with now a month with my parents, trying to
- 20:48get to dispense time with them. My dad has a very aggressive form of
- 20:53brain cancer, and oh god, I'm sorry. I wanted to I wanted
- 20:59us some time with him before I'm gonna move across the country. And yeah,
- 21:03and it's I don't know what's going to happen, you know, So
- 21:10I get what you mean, did I definitely get waking me? But I
- 21:15mean, this episode brings out emotions like that because it is about loss,
- 21:18and it's not about it in a big melodramatic way. It's about it in
- 21:22a very quiet way. And it feels very silly to be talking about things
- 21:30like this with One Piece of all of all shows, but like that's part
- 21:36of the why One Piece is good is because it can occasionally dig into really
- 21:41deep, real emotions and this is not the last time and it's going to
- 21:45do that. Yeah, but it it's I don't know, it's powerful.
- 21:52It's one of the reasons I love Brooks so much is as a character,
- 21:55he's actually one of I'd say he's probably my third favorite straw Hat, Like
- 21:57he's deep in my heart and it's he's you know, he's this fun,
- 22:03silly, wacky character, and yet he's also this character that like will have
- 22:08those moments of solemn solemnity. He will, you know, I don't know.
- 22:15There's an emotional richness and a texture to him that a lot of the
- 22:19other characters don't have as much. And I don't know. He's just a
- 22:22treat. He's just a treat to have. Um Gus says. Some of
- 22:29the main thematics of thriller bark surrounding loss and oppression and how people cope with
- 22:33it more and Brooke being to the biggest examples different, very different reactions to
- 22:38losing your crew. And yeah, that's right. I wasn't there for when
- 22:42you talked about Maria, But yeah, Moray's whole thing is built around the
- 22:45fact that he lost He's doing this. He did all this because he lost
- 22:48his crew and this was his horrifying way of responding. Um. I mean,
- 22:53you have the whole thing with oh God, what's his name, doctor
- 22:57Hogback and the zombie lady who threw place I can't remember her name, which
- 23:03God, that had some really creepy, disgusting undertones. Chinry Chindry, Sindry,
- 23:10Sindry, some centry Sentry. Yes, it always takes me ages to
- 23:15get to her name. It's in there somewhere, Uh, but yeah,
- 23:22I mean, like the first episode, it's it is just Brooks backstory,
- 23:26getting to get a better handle on the timeline of it, uh, and
- 23:30the emotional texture of it, and him accepting Lufy's offer to to join the
- 23:37crew for real. Oh. Also the learning that he had a tone dial
- 23:42that he bought off a merchant ages ago that he keeps in his head and
- 23:48it has the recording of their last time playing that song, so he can
- 23:53play it for Laboon when he sees Laboon again, which that is just so
- 24:00the extra mile and sad. This is the another thing that got me first
- 24:06of all. One of the things that I'm going to give you a piece
- 24:10of advice here while your dad is still around, and that is take as
- 24:15much video as you can, because you will start to lose what they sounded
- 24:19like and some of the like turns of phrase they used or things like that.
- 24:26I really wish I had more video of my dad, but you know,
- 24:29he died before everybody had videos in their pockets all the time. Or
- 24:32cameras in their pockets, so it wasn't as easy to do, but I
- 24:37wish so much that I had gotten video of him and of my grandmother.
- 24:40And I can't emphasize enough to everybody listening, Honestly, if you have loved
- 24:45one still around, get them on tape doing whatever, like even mundane stuff,
- 24:49that's almost the best, you know. So I had on my phone
- 24:56two voicemails, one from my father and when from my grandma, both of
- 25:03them singing me Happy Birthday. And I had these for about eight months and
- 25:11then one day I woke up and they were gone. And it turned out
- 25:15that, like after a certain amount of time, voicemails just get automatically deleted
- 25:19from your phone. Now evidently there's a lot longer of a buffer nowadays than
- 25:25there used to be, because I've got some that are years old in my
- 25:29voicemail still, but those were deleted, and I got in touch with the
- 25:34phone company was like, can I get those back? And there was no
- 25:37way, and I was devastated. So yeah, highly highly recommend voice record.
- 25:45Like the fact that Brooke did that, it just reminded me of that
- 25:48and I was like, I hope he doesn't lose that because if he loses
- 25:51it before he gets a chance to like at least play it for laboon.
- 25:53But also I'm sure he just wants to hold onto it. I don't know
- 25:56how many times you can use uh one of those like what are they called
- 26:02tone dial? I think it was a tone dial? Yeah, can he
- 26:07play it? We could play it more than once? Definitely, because okay,
- 26:12okay, could play it more than once? Good? Um, because
- 26:18yeah, I hope that he doesn't don't don't fuck it up, brook is
- 26:22what I'm saying. Um. But yeah, So like him joining the crew,
- 26:29this is the other thing that sort of hit for me because of what
- 26:30we get in his you know, anytime somebody joins the crew and and it's
- 26:37after I have been sort of certain that we have reached the point where we
- 26:41have the crew we're gonna have, that surprises me. But with Frankie especially,
- 26:48I was kind of like, I mean, that's cool. I really
- 26:52like Frankie, but I don't really like because he had his own crew threw
- 27:00at one point there was a sort of and he was like in charge.
- 27:03You know, it sort of felt a little bit weird to me because he's
- 27:10like leaving them behind for these other people and the reason why I made sense,
- 27:15but it just didn't. Like with Brooke, he is like starting over
- 27:22and finding people who are going to be his new family after being alone for
- 27:29so long, and that like really got to me as well, just getting
- 27:34to see him. Do we go from the playing the song with his crew
- 27:42in his memory to him alone and then to him with all of these people
- 27:48again singing along with him in the background, and like they're not the same
- 27:53people. It's not like they just replaced his old friends and stuff, but
- 27:59there is like a real hopefulness to that of if you hold on long enough,
- 28:04things may come back around and be okay at least. Sometimes the loss
- 28:12is what makes things more precious once you get to try again, even you
- 28:19know, because you know what it's about that family. It's kind of emphasized
- 28:29by you know, he has that moment looking at everyone after they're done with
- 28:33a song of just crying and being so happy, saying he's so happy he
- 28:38stuck around, so happy he kept going because it meant he got here.
- 28:42And it's like, yeah, that if you're the if you struggle with things
- 28:48that you know, I'll say I have struggled with personally, that's such a
- 28:52that's a mood. That's a big mood of those moments when you're just happy
- 28:56that you have persevered through rough times to get where you are. Yep.
- 29:03Yeah. Also I do love that when they have the group shots of like
- 29:06everyone you know, partying and everything, and you could hear when they each
- 29:10focus on different crewmates, you could hear their voice actors stand out a little
- 29:12bit more as they're also singing this song together. Like that's just a fun
- 29:18touch. Yeah. Yeah, I like getting to meet some of the other
- 29:22people, and I also get liked to get to know the captain a little
- 29:27bit more. Calico. I just love his name so much. He gets
- 29:33sick with an illness at one point, and I was sort of wondering because
- 29:41you know, we had seen like in flashbacks the crew was killed a lot
- 29:45of them in a battle. But I sort of started to be like,
- 29:48did I misunderstand and it just sort of looked like a battle. But it
- 29:51turns out they all died because they caught this illness. But no, the
- 29:56illness takes him. But as far as I remember, it doesn't kill anybody
- 30:00else, does it. It's just the captain. I think it I think
- 30:04I think it did kill some other crew members of the crew, but they
- 30:07were like, if you know, we don't want to take this this,
- 30:10i'llness take any more people. And so they caught it early on where they're
- 30:14like, hey, we're gonna go another way. You guys get a new
- 30:18ship and keep going. And Brook is the captain now, so the captain
- 30:23is definitely dead though, right, I mean it's like, oh, he
- 30:30went he went to sail the cam belt to to to find a doctor who
- 30:33might be able to kire him, which is like the cam belt is already
- 30:37a death sentence. Yeah, okay, Like he's definitely he's definitely dead.
- 30:44Also, this was fifty years ago. I think he's definitely dead. Yeah,
- 30:48that's true because Brook is just immortal basically. Um. But I although
- 30:55there is one part where Brooke is talking to him and Calico like grabs him
- 31:00by the wrist and I was like, don't touch him. I got very
- 31:03agitated post COVID at seeing that they were not respecting the six foot personal space
- 31:08rule that and also he had a mask goll and then like Brooke took the
- 31:15mask off of him or something. I was like, hey, yep,
- 31:19there's a fucking reason for that, demonstrating poor understanding of mask usage even in
- 31:27cartoons. Yeah. Look, I'm not perfect, god knows, but some
- 31:34of the ways I've seen people wearing masks, I mean, what are we
- 31:38even doing? Why have one? What are you doing? Um? So
- 31:44I'm trying to I just want to make sure because we only have like the
- 31:47two episodes for this, and we have been jumping around here, and I
- 31:52want to make sure that I don't miss anything. But yeah, and it's
- 31:56also a little challenging because it jumps around in his story really heavily. So
- 32:05we go at one point to uh Brooke alone on the ship, just talking
- 32:12to himself and like standing on his head and dancing all like it's got a
- 32:19real home alone after he realizes his family has gone. At first, kind
- 32:23of feeling if you're familiar, Like eventually I was getting more asked Away,
- 32:32I was getting more like cast Oh interesting, oh like mad from isolation.
- 32:38Yes, it's silly and goofy, but he just is trying to entertain himself
- 32:45out of the horrible, horrible state he's in. Yeah, I see that.
- 32:49I forgot about cast Away. That's a movie that I feel like I
- 32:52should rewatch. But I also like, it is I'm here tough, you
- 32:57know, So I'm like, how much would I enjoy watching because I it's
- 33:02tough. Man, I don't know if I can go through losing Wilson all
- 33:07over again. But yeah, he's like dancing around and at one point he
- 33:15sort of makes himself into a uh like it's like he's doing the plank and
- 33:22has himself like leaned diagonally up against the railing and stuff. Just a weird
- 33:27thing. And this is the part where he dreams that they're all back,
- 33:31and Kaliko is saying, oh, you were just having a bad dream,
- 33:36and he is overjoyed and falls on his face and is telling like saying to
- 33:42all of them, I'm so glad. I can't believe that it wasn't that
- 33:45it was just a dream. It was just a nightmare. And he lifts
- 33:50his head and he had been human, like his face was his human face
- 33:59when he was in the dream, and then when he raises his face,
- 34:02it's the skeleton face and everything is just like overgrown and broken. And the
- 34:12way he just stares and there's this long pause that's kind of part of what
- 34:16I meant about the understated quality, like it could easily have been I'm realizing
- 34:23it was just a dream and I completely break down, But it doesn't do
- 34:30that. It's just this like kind of silence and a shock that feels more
- 34:36like, how could I have been so stupid to think that it wasn't real?
- 34:40Of course it's real, you know. And then we jumped straight back
- 34:45into a flashback again of him playing the fiddle to wake everybody up and all
- 34:52of them being like, why are you doing this, dude? And I
- 34:57like that too, because sometimes I think I mentioned about how my dad used
- 35:02to wake me up playing the trumpet, and as much as I wanted to
- 35:08literally take his life from him in those moments, after all this time and
- 35:14having lost him, I can look back on that and be like, oh
- 35:16Dad, And there is like a bittersweet quality to it. And it was
- 35:22just so many of the like moments that he is remembering and the ways that
- 35:27he is coping, I just really deeply understood. And we have like a
- 35:32montage of the travels that they all do, and there's there's one part here
- 35:43that they're talking about how they got bounties for themselves and they're really like,
- 35:47you know, proud of themselves for having bounties. We get to see a
- 35:54a really quick flash of what I think are meant to be his guys going
- 36:01up against a bad guy with a huge spiked mace and like blonde hair,
- 36:12presumably in some fight that they came out on top of. So it's this
- 36:15like very warlike scene. But then we jump to them waving goodbye to some
- 36:22people who are living in these huge tents and they're all in winter clothes with
- 36:29like the snow falling, and I was like immediately making this into a Christmas
- 36:35thing in my head and was just like, oh, they they just went
- 36:37tree shopping and they're gonna take it home and decorate it. We have this
- 36:44one dude who is he's really fat and wears this like pink shirt with a
- 36:50ruffle down the front and he plays the cello. I guess we see him
- 36:54a couple of times. The designs for some of the members of the crew
- 37:00are really distinctive, and I love like they're like accumulated ensemble. Look they
- 37:06have Yes, yes, definitely, there's a lot of layering happening with some
- 37:12of their outfits. I'm just trying it because like the flashbacks are sort of
- 37:19mixed in so I just want to make sure that I don't miss anything here.
- 37:23But yeah, that this is when it jumps from that memory back to
- 37:29Frankie dancing around on the tabletop, and this is when he says about the
- 37:36tone dial that he wants to play this song for Laboon again. And he
- 37:45says something and it being recorded on my heart, but I guess you could
- 37:49say it's recorded in my head as well, and I was like, why
- 37:53is that? And then I realized, Oh, because he's keeping it literally
- 37:58in his head every time he says something that I'm like, wait, I
- 38:00have to remember that. It's probably like a pun pretty much, yeah,
- 38:07which I would also be doing where I a skeleton, it would be puns
- 38:14all guys. I really love the flashbacks. I really like the flashbacks getting
- 38:19a lot of time with human brook because I love Brooks designing the present.
- 38:22But it's also fun seeing how he looked when he was alive, like his
- 38:25I was also great then, like, yeah, I know, he's just
- 38:30like expert level character design as always from ODA, just like I this man,
- 38:37I want to this is just like a fully realized, fun, interesting
- 38:39character, like he was already a freaking what like eight seven feet eight feet
- 38:45tall or something like that before it was even a skeleton. Yes, humongous.
- 38:50There's a lot of giant people in this universe. There are, I
- 38:55mean, there's literal giants who are their own, like fine of people,
- 39:00and then there's also people that aren't giants. They're just really big humans,
- 39:06yes, And that's never really explained or dealt with, just like, oh,
- 39:09yeah, some people grow to be fifteen feet tall and that's normal.
- 39:13That's just that's not a giant, that's just a really tall person. Yeah.
- 39:17I feel like somebody had said in a comment that it was theorized that
- 39:22there was like interbreeding between giants and people, which I mean maybe, but
- 39:28unless I hear anything specific about that, that just feels like people making stuff
- 39:32up. Um, that's that sounds like a headcanon. Yeah, exactly.
- 39:38That's like there's a I can't remember are you a Song of Ace and Fire
- 39:45person? Oh? I still love to wish I wasn't, but I am
- 39:52fucking same. Um. There's the whole thing with like Duncan the tall and
- 39:59like potent actually being giantish blood like way back in his background, and he's
- 40:05related to the Mountain and sand Or distantly as well. Isn't he or is
- 40:09it? Like I feel like it's supposed I know as I thought it was
- 40:15then as well as far as I can recall, I think it's only brand
- 40:22because I mean, there could be a theory about the sand Or brothers,
- 40:24as are the Clude Gang brothers. From what I remember. The Clude Gang
- 40:29brothers, though, were commoners originally who were uplifted into nobility because of Thai
- 40:36Wind picking them out. Okay, he was like, like, give me
- 40:44sounds like well, it was like their grandfather. Their grandfather raised hounds and
- 40:50like bred them for specific qualities. It was basically like I could do this
- 40:53with my own kids, Chris, and Thaiwan was like hired and it's like
- 41:00horrifying. You're a horrifying person. Christ. It says a lot about you,
- 41:06Tiewin that you enabled this. So glad he's dead. I'm glad you're
- 41:10dead. I'm so glad he's dead. Feudalistic asshole. So we then have
- 41:20this. I appreciate it as well, because, like you know, we
- 41:22have had a lot of suggestions with the way that Brooke is like so emotional
- 41:28about laboon In even the flashbacks, there have been times where I sort of
- 41:34felt as if he cared for Laboon more than everybody else. And I still
- 41:38think that probably he had more of a connection with La Boon. But there's
- 41:44a moment where they're like forcing themselves to sit up after this attack, and
- 41:50one of the guys says, I just have one regret, and another guy
- 41:52says La Boon, And I really appreciated that even in this moment, these
- 42:00two dudes who are not Brooke are both like feeling that same burden and obligation
- 42:07to Laboon, and you know, there's just it was a nice reminder that
- 42:13like the rest of the crew was in on that as well. It wasn't
- 42:17just Brooks is like private packed which is sort of how I tend to think
- 42:23of it, is it being mostly about Brooke and Laboon. But it wasn't.
- 42:29Everybody was in on this and was fond of him, and they're like
- 42:32in their last moments and they're thinking of him, you know, And I
- 42:37don't know, I just really appreciated that it was It was a good reminder
- 42:44of that. I think you know it in a way, Brooke, it
- 42:47is a private packed out just because Brooks the only one who's left, oh
- 42:51for sure, now, yeah, because of that it feels that way to
- 42:53us. Yeah, that's that's pretty much everything in the first episode, I
- 42:59think, yeah, I think so he when he starts saying, like,
- 43:04we should in our last moments, we should sing a song. I also
- 43:07appreciated that I sort of expected them to be like, dude, what are
- 43:12you talking about, But a couple of the guys start laughing and are just
- 43:15like, yeah, all right, why not? Like that seems like a
- 43:19perfectly good way to go out. And I like that as well, that
- 43:23they're so like receptive to this because they, like I guess, I'm just
- 43:30kind of used to characters who are goofy and creative and you know, have
- 43:37a connection with animals to be sort of like maligned by their crewmates a lot
- 43:44of the time. You know, there's so much there's such a trope about
- 43:49them being like the one person who like sees the beauty in the world while
- 43:55other people are distracted or not connected or whatever. And I just really liked
- 44:00getting to see that, Like Brooke is the one who is left and so
- 44:06he is the one that we personally appreciate the most, but he was with
- 44:08a crew full of like decent dudes. It seems like who all had similar
- 44:15value systems to him, because I think that I, well, just by
- 44:20virtue of him being the only one left, I think of him as being
- 44:22like very unique out of the crew, and it's not necessarily true. There
- 44:30was a point where we heard the Captain's like, hey, joined my pirate
- 44:36crew or something like that, and like the whole thing was, you could
- 44:38join this crew if you have a love for music. So it gives me
- 44:43this this crew's thing in the way that so many Pire crews have themes.
- 44:46Their theme from the very beginning was they're all musicians, they're all artists,
- 44:51they're all extremely emotional people who care about others, and that's like just kind
- 44:54of always been their jam. And so it really in a way that makes
- 45:00Brooke standout in the sense of like, yes, he's the last one carrying
- 45:04on this flame from this very unique group of people who came together for that
- 45:08purpose. That's right. I forgot that he says that. He says also
- 45:13like we'll bring joy to children wherever we go, which was just such a
- 45:19weird like mission for pirates to have the motto. Yeah, it's a weird
- 45:27motto. Florian says, their jam good one. Oh, Florian you get
- 45:35out of here. Um. So yeah, that's that's pretty much the first
- 45:42of the two episodes. And and then we're going on to a new crewmate,
- 45:47the musician Humming Brook and developments in this one. So we come back
- 45:59to the present, which should we start with? The thing that I want
- 46:02to talk about first really is the paper and I can't remember what they call
- 46:13it because it sounded so weird that you're not sticking. It's called a Vivra
- 46:19card, which that is a very weird thing I remember, because like Vivra,
- 46:24like vitals, like it's it's there's a root word in there that has
- 46:28to do with life and you know, living things, and so yeah,
- 46:32there are bits of paper that it is possible to make out in the New
- 46:36World where you tie a piece of paper to your life force, and it
- 46:39can if you give someone a piece of your Viva card, it can always
- 46:44lead them to you. And it also gives them an idea of what state
- 46:47you're in. It'll tell them if you're in danger or dying. Right,
- 46:52So first of all, what how does that work? I would like some
- 47:00more details on this please. We're just throwing this fucking thing in here,
- 47:05and it's not necessary that I get more details, but I want them.
- 47:09I would like them. I just want to I love them too. How
- 47:14does this happen? And Lola is talking about it, and it's just like
- 47:17you don't know what that is and somebody has to be like nobody outside of
- 47:22like where we grew up as these and are you born with like do you
- 47:29just get the one? And you have to be super careful about how they
- 47:32start out. I don't know if you can have more than one. But
- 47:37they said you take a piece of paper and like a fingernail or something like
- 47:42a bit of a fingernail to a specific shop in the New World and they
- 47:45will make you a Viver card using that paper. It's so it's like they
- 47:50need a bit of you to like huye your life essence to the card.
- 47:54So there are things you buy and you they make so you can get probably
- 48:01more than one and just like hand him out like candy. I would guess
- 48:07that's pretty cool. So the way that the thing that we find out here
- 48:13is that that paper that Ace gave Lufy two hundred episodes ago at this point,
- 48:22yeah, is a Viver card. And he said to Lufy when he
- 48:25gave it to him, this will like reunite us someday and lufy he sewed
- 48:34it to like the inside of his hat what I can't remember where he So
- 48:40he pulls it out of his hat right and it's smoldering at the edges.
- 48:50It's not like on fire exactly, but it looks like it had recently been
- 48:54on fire. I'll say it that way up until a second ago, which
- 49:01everybody is like, well, that's not awesome, dude. That's an indicator
- 49:08that his life is like in some real danger. You probably want to go
- 49:14and help him, which I of course assumed would be our next leg of
- 49:21our journey. Instead, Lofy is just like, nah, he'll be fine.
- 49:32I would say, it feels like he gave it a little bit of
- 49:35thought first, but he does come down on pretty quickly on like, no,
- 49:39my brother's fine. He's my big brother. He can handle himself.
- 49:44He says that, like he'd be upset with me if I went to try
- 49:46and help him, like if you embarrassing if if his little brother tried to
- 49:50save him. So he'll handle it and we'll meet up later. Is his
- 49:54attitude, which is like, I mean, that's a lot of faith to
- 49:57have in your in your brother. But it's the sort of thing that,
- 50:00like, I believe that Lufy knows his brother well enough to make this judgment
- 50:07call. So it's not even that I think that Lufy isn't correct. It's
- 50:13more that it felt super out of character for Lofy to me, as somebody
- 50:19who has historically not cared if people have actively told him to not save them.
- 50:27I'm looking at you, Lufy, with Robin standing next to me,
- 50:30and I am pointing at Robin. She actively was like, don't save me,
- 50:36stop it, and you were like, I can't hear you because I'm
- 50:38saving you so hard. The fact that he is so willing to be like
- 50:45NA, my brother wouldn't like it. That did not feel like Lofy to
- 50:49me. That was a weird response. And I wish that I knew Ace
- 50:53better as a viewer so that I could understand where he's coming from on this
- 51:00little bit better myself, because, like I said, I trust that Lufy
- 51:02knows him enough to say this, but I don't know Ace well enough.
- 51:08I feel like, so I have a thought on that, and this is
- 51:15I'm going to tell you, this is just a thought. I don't know
- 51:16if this is the real reason. This is my speculation on the inside of
- 51:21Lupy's head, which is always is an exceptionally dark place to look into,
- 51:24and you don't think they're gonna find them there. I would say I would
- 51:29say that the difference is that Robin and Nami also. Nami also like pushed
- 51:34him away and said I don't want you to help me or save me a
- 51:37lot in her arc back in East Blue. The difference in those cases are
- 51:42those are people he's entrusted onto his crew, and with that, I think
- 51:46Lufy sees that as a like, well, we have made a pact,
- 51:51we are on a crew together. I am going to help you even if
- 51:54you tell me not to. His brother has a on a crew. He
- 52:00is on white Beard's crew, one of the most powerful pirates in the world.
- 52:05He is not Lufy's responsibility. He doesn't owe that debt to his brother.
- 52:10He in addition to just feeling like his brother take care of himself,
- 52:14he's probably assuming, like you know, white Beard can take care of him.
- 52:19So that's what I would say. The difference is is it's just it's
- 52:22a different how Pete. Different people are categorized differently in Lufy's brain. Lufy
- 52:29has a very weird way of looking at the world, and I do my
- 52:32best to make sense of it. But you know, that's that's my guests.
- 52:38But yeah, there was that stuff about Ace, so that's worrying that
- 52:44he is, that he's not doing very well after that fight with Blackbeard.
- 52:47Yeah, and then also, uh, we also with the viper cards stuff,
- 52:53Lola gave Nami piece of her mother's fear card because of her mother is
- 53:00a very powerful pirate in the New World, and she thinks, hey,
- 53:04yes, maybe having this with like my signature on it will be like a
- 53:07boon to you. And also I don't like have a huge like positive like
- 53:13I'm not like, yeah, Lolo's grape. I I'm like, this is
- 53:15nice. It felt like like a nice, cute, little friendship moment between
- 53:19her Anomie that I appreciated. Agree. Yeah, I'm just really glad because
- 53:23like the way that things had started out, I was so sure that I
- 53:27was going to get this like weird rivalry thing, and the fact that that
- 53:30was subverted just I really I'm I think that I wouldn't be as enchanted with
- 53:38Lola if it weren't for the fact that I was like expecting the worst out
- 53:43of what was going to happen with her, And in terms of like what
- 53:47you're saying about the way that Lufy sees things, I am willing to accept
- 53:52that because you're right, like, his priority set doesn't make a lot of
- 53:57sense to me in many ways, So I'm definitely able to see. It's
- 54:05just such a strange thing because I'm so used to in any story, like,
- 54:12I can't even really think of one in which this isn't the case other
- 54:15than one piece at the moment, and I'm sure there's one out there,
- 54:16but at this point, I'm drawn a blank. Anytime that somebody's family is
- 54:24being fucked with, that person usually sets everything aside to deal with their family
- 54:34being fucked with, even if it's somebody that they had a bad relationship with
- 54:39in the past. It doesn't ultimately matter, even when I think it should
- 54:45matter, Even when I'm like, they have screwed you so many times you
- 54:50need to let them go and suffer the consequence, it doesn't matter. They're
- 54:53always written as being like, yeah, but family, for she's my sister,
- 55:00is my mother, And I'm like, well, they don't seem to
- 55:01be real able to remember that when you need them to remember that. So
- 55:07maybe you should just let it lie. So I'm so used to like family
- 55:14being the ultimate line in the sand for any character, and I the fact
- 55:22that he is just not only willing to like be like, oh, I'm
- 55:30sure he'll be able to take care of himself, but also like finding out
- 55:34that he has a dad and a grandpa out there as well, that he
- 55:39never talks about that. We have like run into one of them by accident,
- 55:45and the other one swooped in and like helped him out at Lowtown,
- 55:51but then we never saw him again. That is the part that I'm I
- 55:55find so bizarre I think about this universe is because we don't know Loufy's history.
- 56:04All these like people who would be important in another character's life, they're
- 56:09kind of acquaintances for him. Yeah, well, I mean Lufy when he
- 56:16was told about his dad, he didn't even know that Dragon is his dad,
- 56:21right, He wasn't even aware. Ye in his mind, they've never
- 56:25even met before as far as he can remember, Like, this is a
- 56:30stranger to him completely. And You're right. I think that's one of the
- 56:34interesting things about One Piece, because we get these you know, these digs
- 56:37into each of the crew members backstories, and we got some lufy backstory at
- 56:40the very very start, but that didn't include any of his family stuff.
- 56:45And so we have a lot of these big blank spots of his life that
- 56:50are just kind of there for us to wonder about and speculate about at this
- 56:55point in the story where you have to wonder, yeah, like why isn't
- 56:59he like that, like deep into his family. And I'm and I don't
- 57:01know if it's just how he was raised. I mean, his time with
- 57:07his grandfather seems to have been mixed at best. But is it that Is
- 57:14it just his own weird priorities in general of how he sees the world and
- 57:19how he what he thinks is important when he doesn't think it's important. I
- 57:22don't know, but yeah, it is a really fascinating deviation because, like
- 57:25you said, in so many stories family, I mean you recently Ish went
- 57:29through full model Alchemist's Brotherhood, you know, in the whole the Brothers.
- 57:32The family thing is so huge and central to that show in so many ways,
- 57:37and I know of people who've seen it and gone, I don't have
- 57:42any siblings. I cannot I personally watching media like this that focuses so heavily
- 57:47on like a sibling relationship. I can't relate to that at all, Like
- 57:52I can try to understand, but I don't. I'm never going to understand
- 57:58like that deep connection idea. And yeah, it is interesting having a something
- 58:05that subverts that, where for Lufy his family is not the most important thing.
- 58:08The most important thing is his dream, and then his crew, and
- 58:14then his basic needs like eating and sleeping, Yeah, and then everything else.
- 58:19Was kind of like even mi Zoro. We haven't really seen any of
- 58:23his family either. We saw him stumbling into a town and getting training to
- 58:29become this amazing swordsman, but we have no idea what his family was like
- 58:34or where he was coming from, none of that information. And like with
- 58:37Lufy, all the relatives that we have seen of his or mail, so
- 58:42still no idea if he if like his mother is still alive. I don't
- 58:46remember him mentioning anything. I like, wasn't there a woman that was coming
- 58:53after him when he was in the bar with Redhead's his name? Yes,
- 59:00she I think she would, she like ran the bar. I can't remember
- 59:05her name, But she wasn't his No, I mean not officially. I
- 59:12don't think, but you know she watched after him. Where we are in
- 59:15the story, we have had no mention. Thus you know where you are
- 59:17right now. There's been no mention of any family, any mother for Lufy.
- 59:22There's also been no mention you bring up store. There's also been no
- 59:25mention of any family for Sangi. Uh. You know, we just show
- 59:30him on a ship working as a as a as a kid. Let's see,
- 59:34we had also uh Nami. We went to her family, and we
- 59:38went to Ustav's family. Chopper kicked out of his dear clan people. We
- 59:43don't know what Frankie's family's like. I mean, we know the Frankie family
- 59:46that was his like gang of thugs, but we didn't know, but we
- 59:50didn't know, like where the hell are we didn't They might have mentioned his
- 59:53parents, but I don't recall. Yeah, I don't remember because he gets
- 59:58adopted by he became a pirate um. Oh yeah, but I didn't think
- 1:00:07about Sanji because you know what I'm realizing now, and this is so funny.
- 1:00:10When this happens, you were have this where you don't realize that you've
- 1:00:15made a massive assumption, and then once somebody, why do you think that
- 1:00:21you're like, well, obviously because of this thing that I realized now I
- 1:00:24made up. Oh, I don't know where I got this, but I
- 1:00:31had it in my head that Sangie's family, like his parents brought him to
- 1:00:37this like restaurant on the ship and abandoned him and bailed there is I don't
- 1:00:44know where I got I just like made this up that they just bounced and
- 1:00:47left him and he had to figure out how to how to work his way
- 1:00:52up through the kitchen to like get by. Like this was like an Oliver
- 1:00:55Twist situation, except Oliver was actually an ord And I don't know where about
- 1:01:01that from, but that's what's been in my head was that he was like
- 1:01:06purposefully abandoned Zoro. I what I am imagining for Zoro, which is not
- 1:01:13an actual assumption, it's just it's an actual imagining. His dad was not
- 1:01:20tough enough for him, and he was like, I am not going to
- 1:01:22learn what I need to learn from you, So I'm going to run away
- 1:01:25from home and find somebody who is actually worth a damn to teach me some
- 1:01:29things because you suck. Like I see Zoro as being like just way way
- 1:01:39over the top macho as an infant, to the point where his own father
- 1:01:45was like, lighten up a little bit, and Zoro was like, lighten
- 1:01:47this up and just left in the middle of the night. Oh that's very
- 1:01:55funny. You can't you can't say. Patricius is sitting on a lot of
- 1:02:07comments right now, get back on the topic of the episode. There's uh
- 1:02:16uh, there's the the scene of Brooke going to the grave that Frankie made
- 1:02:27for made for his crew, and Chopper got the flowers, and he takes
- 1:02:32special care to thank Chopper for the flowers, which I thought you would appreciate.
- 1:02:37I not only do I love that he specifically thanks Chopper like everybody involved,
- 1:02:44but yeah, I think Chopper mentions I picked out the flowers because he
- 1:02:47had originally only thanked us up and Frankie. And then when he mentions the
- 1:02:53flowers and and Brooke specifically thanks him in the dub, Chopper says like,
- 1:03:04knock it off, you phony bastard. You're not gonna suck up to me
- 1:03:09by saying thank you or something like that, which I get that it's supposed
- 1:03:14to be like this cute woman of like, I'm totally delighted, but I
- 1:03:16can't. But the idea of that attitude accompanied by the words you phony bastard,
- 1:03:22Like that's just not the language one would actually use in that situation.
- 1:03:27It feels very aggressive. So even though Chopper's being animated with that cute like
- 1:03:34kind of swirly thing that they do with him, I was just like Chopper,
- 1:03:38I was a little shocked at his language and wanted to be like,
- 1:03:40you need to tone it down, sir. Well, that's a reoccurring thing
- 1:03:45for Choppers. He does that. Whatever anyone compliments him, he does that
- 1:03:50kind of like ah shucks kind of pose, but then he insults them really
- 1:03:53harshly through his words, which like it doesn't feel his personality in general,
- 1:03:58but it just makes me think of a doctor Kreha, the witch doctor who
- 1:04:04helped teach him, Like that's probably her influence, just like, oh yeah,
- 1:04:09it's stilt the shit out of people, like who gives a hell he
- 1:04:12does, but it's never that harsh. I felt like phony bastard was taking
- 1:04:16it an extra step. Usually he'll just be like, oh, shut up,
- 1:04:20you stupid, which like that is a thing that I'll say, like
- 1:04:24affectionately to my husband. Occasionally he'll make a joke, and I'll just shake
- 1:04:29my head and just be like, God, you are so stupid, and
- 1:04:31then he'll giggle hysterically to himself because he knows that I thought that was actually
- 1:04:38funny. But if I ever was just like owing you phony bastard, and
- 1:04:43he would be like, what the hell? What is that? Where are
- 1:04:49you that coming from? I don't remember what it was like years ago at
- 1:04:54this point, like probably like a good twelve years ago, and there was
- 1:04:57some podcast I was listening to where a guy like made a comment and his
- 1:05:02co host said, you are a sham and a hell beast, and that
- 1:05:10like lodged itself in my brain, and that is the thing I think all
- 1:05:14the time now, but I never say it out loud because without context,
- 1:05:16it sounds like I'm being incredibly aggressive for like no reason calling somebody a sham.
- 1:05:25I mean that's harsh. Yeah, I'm just like, this is anyway
- 1:05:43fucking monument. It's like a ship. Yeah that has a what looks like
- 1:05:50the Lion's head of the Sunny on it. I don't remember what his ship
- 1:05:57actually looked like, but did the figurehead look like this or is this supposed
- 1:06:01to be? I thought that this was like a nod to who built it,
- 1:06:06like Frankie being like, oh, we'll include some of the Sunny just
- 1:06:10to like sort of it's just signal that we had a hand in this.
- 1:06:16But it's the Sunny like Lion Maine. But then there's like a skull in
- 1:06:21the middle of it with horns, and I don't know, like I don't
- 1:06:27remember at all. The the skull with horns was the Rumbar pirates like thing
- 1:06:33on at least their first ship. Yeah, so I think the Sunny the
- 1:06:39other thing is a reference to the Sunny. But yeah, their figurehead specifically
- 1:06:43was all a skull with horns, like it almost looked like a like a
- 1:06:45cow skull or something. Yeah, which I thought was weird because like,
- 1:06:49their whole thing is music. I thought I thought there would be something referencing
- 1:06:55that. I don't get what this is. Everybody's about, like pretty strong
- 1:07:00thematic ties between their their gimmick and the symbol on their ship and this one
- 1:07:09I didn't understand. I also don't understand Rumbar either, where that name comes
- 1:07:15from, if there's anything there, Okay, I just wanted to check because
- 1:07:19you know, I'm gonna I just had their page open on the wiki,
- 1:07:23so I'm gonna check. But okay, yeah, um ah, says Cowbell.
- 1:07:30Combination of two words. Okay, so it's rumba, which refers to
- 1:07:38a family of musical rhythms and dance styles to date originate in Africa, and
- 1:07:42then combining that with lumbar aka the section of bones and spinal cord, which
- 1:07:47is part of the skeletal system, so that it's it's another skeleton. Pun
- 1:07:55that was the point that is in a hat. Also, it's a stretch
- 1:08:01and a half. It's a stretch and a half. I don't feel like
- 1:08:04that works, but it's not important, so it's fine. But m Oda
- 1:08:12is all over the place. Sometimes he'll do things and I'm like, oh,
- 1:08:15that's fun. And then he'll do stuff and I'm like, why did
- 1:08:17you bother? Who is going to get that. I'm half convinced that what
- 1:08:23you just read me is also just headcannon. That's just like completely nature.
- 1:08:29It did end, it ended a citation needed, and so I'm guessing great,
- 1:08:33probably Oh that's good. Um but yeah, like the volument is kind
- 1:08:44of silly looking, but I do really appreciate, like, you know,
- 1:08:47Brooke is like taking this moment very like he's being very quiet and sincere in
- 1:08:53his appreciation, and then everyone else just like, all right, we're gonna
- 1:08:58go. You chill out here, I guess, and it is just like
- 1:09:02lovely, like I could get like Yetta leave him to kind of grieve a
- 1:09:05little bit. Yeah, and then Zoro shows up, who's finally awake.
- 1:09:13It was so unexpected. I thought that his waking up was going to be
- 1:09:16a lot more of a production. And the fact that he just like strolls
- 1:09:20on up and he's like awake. Now, I was not expecting this at
- 1:09:26all, and he is very respectful. I wasn't sure how he was gonna
- 1:09:35behave here, you know. Um Yeah, Brooks says, in case you
- 1:09:40haven't heard, I officially joined the crew, and Zoro says, well,
- 1:09:45that's too bad for you. This is a crew that can be a real
- 1:09:49handful and it's an easy thing for Zoro's day with Zoro is a good handful
- 1:09:58and a half him selling God a lot of the time. That felt very
- 1:10:03innuendoe. But I'm going to not mention what I was thinking at all.
- 1:10:12I would never I would just not even I didn't even say it. So
- 1:10:18I'm very mature and everybody should appreciate me about hero. I would have said
- 1:10:26that about hold on, I have a brand here, a handful and a
- 1:10:32half. You say, mmmm, well, well, well, but yeah,
- 1:10:42if it sits with him. I always enjoy by the way, I
- 1:10:45know I've talked about these, but the little interstitials where they would normally put
- 1:10:51it like a commercial, you know, they don't have those on the Netflix
- 1:10:56one and then going to Funimation, I forgot they existed. They come back,
- 1:11:00and the one for Zoro is him like yawning widely, and then when
- 1:11:08he like finishes yawning, there's like a tear at the corner of his eye,
- 1:11:11like he just woke up, and his eyes are sort of gummy.
- 1:11:15Not what I would expect. I would think that Zoro's little interesting would be
- 1:11:19like him fighting and being a badass. And I don't know why, but
- 1:11:21I really enjoy the fact that it was he just was asleep, because really,
- 1:11:29if you look at the ratio of how much time he spends sleeping to
- 1:11:32fighting, the sleeping is a lot higher, So that makes sense. And
- 1:11:39I don't know, I just wanted to mention that because that this was the
- 1:11:42interstitial right after they're a little seen together. Oh, my god, I
- 1:11:48forgot when we come back, Brooks got an interstitial now, you guys,
- 1:11:55I think this is the first one. Oh, I don't remember what it
- 1:12:00is. Oh my god. Okay, So he's running on the surface of
- 1:12:02the water really fast like a Looney tune. Oh, yes, which I
- 1:12:09don't know that I knew that was a power of his, but I yes,
- 1:12:13I got a little bit spoiled by the interficial there. It's come up
- 1:12:17at least once or twice this arc, but it's okay to forget it.
- 1:12:21It comes up rarely, and the idea is supposed to be because he's just
- 1:12:26a ghost animating bones. He's light enough that he can run over water,
- 1:12:30which doesn't make yes, because he like runs from the sunny to thriller bark
- 1:12:39m hmmm, Why I forgot about that? What a weird Okay, yeah,
- 1:12:44that doesn't make sense, but sure, and no sense. But listen,
- 1:12:49it's a fun idea. And you know how like the it goes from
- 1:12:54the character and then it's it's like you're looking through a telescope and then it
- 1:12:59slides down to like an object of theirs. So for Zoro, it's his
- 1:13:02swords for Brooke, and this is my favorite out of all of them,
- 1:13:09for what will be very obvious reasons. We've got an intricately carved wooden straight
- 1:13:15back chair with a violin and bow resting on it, and the chair is
- 1:13:20sitting by a table with a truly gorgeous tea set and a full cup of
- 1:13:28tea and what looks like some cakes sliced bread and like a three layer like
- 1:13:36maybe me if we are or Napoleon type pastry with like a bunch of frosting
- 1:13:42and fruit on the top. So Brooke favorite character officially now because of his
- 1:13:49interesticial, I would like to go to their thank you. Oh that looks
- 1:13:56great. You guys have attempted to take a screenshot of this, but it's
- 1:13:59going to have all of the writing from the episode over it, ruining it.
- 1:14:02I need you guys to find me a good, like clean picture of
- 1:14:05this and I'll make it like a background image on my ipatters something. Um
- 1:14:15so, so go ahead. Sorry, Oh I was just gonna say yeah,
- 1:14:20but so uh Zoro came up because he's burying his uh he's burying his
- 1:14:27sword right the loss of the sword that broke in I think Eddie's lobbyist when
- 1:14:33the sword broke. That sounds right. Yeah. I think it was like
- 1:14:39a yeah, somebody who was wielding sand or rust rust It was no,
- 1:14:45it was a rust. It was a rustability and everything. Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:14:49Oh that was so freaky. And it was like the sort was important
- 1:14:53to him too, and so he yeah, and so you know, yeah,
- 1:14:57he's giving it a little kind of own little burial here. Um trying
- 1:15:02to think because we started off with the beaver card stuff. They're going they
- 1:15:08want to go to mermaid uh Fishman Island next, Um, yep, uh,
- 1:15:17that's that's stop. They're talking about how mermaids don't wear panties. I
- 1:15:25forgot about Brooks unfortunate. Maybe she could, maybe she'll show me Brooks.
- 1:15:30Can you just stop it with that? It's just truly, could you stop
- 1:15:34it? Could could say stop it? Could it just that whole thing,
- 1:15:39just all of them start bleeding. I do just appreciate that all that's happening.
- 1:15:47And then it just cuts over to Torom just goes mermaids have a bottom
- 1:15:53half. That's just fish. Yes. She's just like so befuddled by their
- 1:15:57interest in this entire topic. Yep. And I'm like, see, I
- 1:16:01know you're not as big a fan of Robin, but that's like why I
- 1:16:03enjoy Robin. I don't know what's wrong with the rest of you. But
- 1:16:09Okay, there's a Futurama episode I think where like Fry falls in love with
- 1:16:15a mermaid and they go to have sex and he's thinking mammal ish sex,
- 1:16:21but she's like, yeah, I'm gonna lay my eggs and then you'll just
- 1:16:25like come on top of them, and he's like, I'm gonna that.
- 1:16:31They go. I feel like Fry says something to them later about like we
- 1:16:35realized we loved each other, but we weren't in love, and somebody just
- 1:16:40goes problems in the bedroom really loud. I still remember that. That's a
- 1:16:46good, good mermaid joke. But yeah, this, uh, this dude
- 1:16:50as well. He's one of the risky brothers. Is that you know,
- 1:16:58the one I'm I'm talking about. But he's the one who's like talking to
- 1:17:00them about what mermaids are. He's not joining them though he's part of Lola's
- 1:17:03crew. I guess so. Florian says Headcannon for Brooke. He has been
- 1:17:12so desocialized by being alone for life fifty years, so he does not know
- 1:17:15how to talk to women anymore. I want to believe that, Florian,
- 1:17:18but I just have a really bad feeling that he is just like this.
- 1:17:24I want, I want to think that you're right, but I don't want
- 1:17:30to get like if that were true, then it would follow that as he
- 1:17:34becomes socialized again, he will stop saying things like this. And I don't
- 1:17:39have a lot of hope that's going to happen. I just feel like I'm
- 1:17:41gonna have to put out with it, which I don't love, but be
- 1:17:45gonna do. Jessica says, when we first met Brook, he was drinking
- 1:17:51tea. I forgot about that. That's right. When he was he was
- 1:17:55just like singing to himself, drinking a cup of tea as they passed him
- 1:17:59in the fog. That was a hell of a first meeting too. I
- 1:18:03forgot about that, Thank you, Jessica. Okay, So yeah, this
- 1:18:10is when the viver card thing is introduced and we have everybody thinking that we're
- 1:18:15going to go and rescue Ace and that is definitely not what Lufy wants to
- 1:18:19do. And also, as we're departing Thriller Bark all of the other crews
- 1:18:27saying like, you know, maybe we'll meet again someday, so I'm sort
- 1:18:30of interested to see if we do ever run into them again. I'm also
- 1:18:34very curious whether or not Lola's mom is going to turn out to be anybody
- 1:18:38we know, or if it's going to be a completely brand new person.
- 1:18:43I'm gonna go with probably brand new, because this show doesn't seem to want
- 1:18:46to do the like everything is super interconnected thing all the time that some shows
- 1:18:56in series is fall prey to. I won't name any names, but it's
- 1:19:00definitely a thing. I Oh, I know exactly what you mean. I
- 1:19:04there is like some there's something with some writers where they're like, the more
- 1:19:11tightly knit and the more interconnected things are, the better things are. And
- 1:19:15I'm always like, I'm much more like the what's the word, like,
- 1:19:18the maximalism, not minimalism. Don't keep cutting. Just make your world expansive
- 1:19:24and beautiful and richly full of a bunch of different stuff. People was like,
- 1:19:28Oh, what's a coincidence that? Blah blah. I'm like, yeah,
- 1:19:30there's billions of people in this world because happened. I don't know what
- 1:19:34to tell you. Coincidences do, in fact happen, and it's not bad.
- 1:19:40Storytelling, Like why did this character go here at this time? I
- 1:19:44don't know, because they felt like it because they wanted to get some new
- 1:19:47body washed and it just happened to be sold there. Who knows, who
- 1:19:50cares? But yeah, your theory, Oh yeah, kids say think about
- 1:20:00your theory, but I will say I will ask you about rather. The
- 1:20:05way that the episode ends is with this like, oh yeah, a lot
- 1:20:09of ships have always disappeared in the Florian Triangle and it happened long before Thriller
- 1:20:15Bark was ever there. And you just see this horrified, like this outline
- 1:20:19of something in the mists. It's like, maybe it's a good thing the
- 1:20:23mists are there, so the people there aren't aware of what's near them,
- 1:20:27and it's like, what does that mean? Though? What the whole hell?
- 1:20:32Because like we had so I'm trying to remember it was right before they
- 1:20:36went to Skypea. I think that they saw those giant shadows and it turned
- 1:20:42out to be like a weird trick of light, right yeah, like yeah,
- 1:20:51it was shadows of people on the White White Sea being sent down to
- 1:20:56the cloud layer, right, okay, giants, Because I was like,
- 1:21:01we've seen something like this very sort of intimidating, and then it turned out
- 1:21:09to kind of be nothing, even though in the moment I was like,
- 1:21:13what is happening, it wasn't really anything. It just was like, Oh,
- 1:21:17that's a weird optical illusion. But this we've got like three what almost
- 1:21:23looked like chimneys, like peaks that are sticking up straight out of the water,
- 1:21:30and what do they look like to me? Or like tree trunks?
- 1:21:35And one of them has these two bright red what you want to say,
- 1:21:43our eyes because of the way that they're set, But it may not be.
- 1:21:48It might just be a trick to make you think that it's eyes.
- 1:21:50I don't know. And they're not all the same height. The one with
- 1:21:55the eyes is the one in front, middle and I say front. It
- 1:21:59looks like it's closest, but maybe not. And then there's one next to
- 1:22:04it and further back, and I can't tell if they're actually shorter or if
- 1:22:09it's just that the way the fog is falling makes them look like they're shorter.
- 1:22:15But yeah, they're just like hidden by the fog. So we get
- 1:22:20this little aside with the voiceover guy who makes an appearance for the first time
- 1:22:26in a while. I think and then no further explanation as our friends like
- 1:22:31sail away from it, and I have to assume that this is going to
- 1:22:33eventually come up again. But I do find it really funny that it seems
- 1:22:39like we're being told this and then going to leave it behind for a while
- 1:22:44and who knows when the hell we're coming back to it, which is like
- 1:22:47how the show operates a lot of the time. They'll introduce an idea or
- 1:22:51a character and then just drop it for a hundred episodes and then boom,
- 1:22:58bring them back again and like, oh, I literally forgot all about it.
- 1:23:04I don't know what to make of that, genuinely no idea. Yeah
- 1:23:09I don't either. I mean, it may really just makes me think of
- 1:23:13just how wide and expanse of the one piece world is. It's I think
- 1:23:16up there with among fantasy is like one of the most like hugely scoped fantasy
- 1:23:24settings in a good way of just you know, we're spending all this time.
- 1:23:29Most of the series thus far has been on the Grand Line. The
- 1:23:31Grand Line is just like a bit of a bit of water on the equator.
- 1:23:36Basically, it's just the water around the Equator, and we're having all
- 1:23:40of these adventures here, there's this whole rest of this world, and we
- 1:23:44get little bits. I mean, they mentioned with the grave thing. You
- 1:23:46know, Brooke is originally from the West Blue, which is comp opposite end
- 1:23:49of the world where we started in East Blue, and the and so is
- 1:23:54Thriller Bark. Thriller Bark itself is from the West Blue, which he mentioned,
- 1:23:59and that he felt it was nice that his fellow countrymen could be buried
- 1:24:03in soil of their homeland, which is like a nice idea there, But
- 1:24:11yeah, I would feel away about them, not not the place I would
- 1:24:16want, but I get it. Yeah, But yeah, it's you know,
- 1:24:21it's this. They could come back to the these Florian Triangle creatures or
- 1:24:27they could not, and I could see either possibility being, you know,
- 1:24:30equally likely, just because this is one piece. It's a big world.
- 1:24:33Some of it we're not I don't know if you've heard the Monka's kind of
- 1:24:39close. We're on the final arc apparently right now or something close to it,
- 1:24:42and so it's it's not going to be able to wrap up every single
- 1:24:45little little referenced piece of world building at this right. I didn't know that
- 1:24:50there was any end in sight. So that is really surprising to me.
- 1:24:56I mean, who knows this, and this ending arc could take another three
- 1:25:00or four years, but still we're in the home stretch, man, and
- 1:25:05it feels like it. Trust me, it feels like we're in the home
- 1:25:09stretch. But yeah, that's the episodes. Did you have any thing you
- 1:25:15want to talk about otherwise about the arc or the I don't know really the
- 1:25:23only thing and I don't know that this like because we've seen a little bit
- 1:25:27of the sunny but not all of it. We haven't seen, for example,
- 1:25:31where everybody sleeps, which I know that this is not usually important to
- 1:25:36a lot of people, but it's something that I'm always very preoccupied by.
- 1:25:40And if you listen to the Doctor Who episodes, you'll hear me like really
- 1:25:45wanting to know what it's like to live in the Tartists and we never really
- 1:25:48get good details on that, but I really want to know if everybody does
- 1:25:56get their own bedroom, and if so, what does Brooks room look like,
- 1:26:00because I want to see I have to imagine it's like very intricately carved
- 1:26:04in the style of his little you know, that little moment. But I
- 1:26:12want to see more of the sunny I'm just going to say that right now,
- 1:26:15because it's so huge, and it seems like to a degree, things
- 1:26:20are being kept from us on purpose so that we can bring it out as
- 1:26:23a surprise. But I want to I want to get to explore it a
- 1:26:29little bit more. And I am going to go back and watch some of
- 1:26:31the episodes that were filler where apparently it becomes a submarine or there is like
- 1:26:35a submarine that got launched which I missed, so I'm looking forward to getting
- 1:26:42to see that. But that's not really a common on this episode. It's
- 1:26:45just now that he has joined, I'm wondering if we're going to get more
- 1:26:47of a tour. Maybe not, but mostly I honestly, I have a
- 1:26:51similar complaint about the show and Doctor Who. Want to say someone actually doesn't
- 1:26:56you know personally character flaw? I like Doctor Who, uh the the I
- 1:27:01do wish I got to see more of the artist. I do wish I
- 1:27:04don't like The Thousand Sunny personally that much. I can kind of prefer the
- 1:27:08Mary, but I do wish we had more downtime between episodes of just the
- 1:27:14crew hanging out and like, what's there downtime? Like we don't get enough
- 1:27:18crew downtime. Um, that's what I live from down in stories everything.
- 1:27:28Gus says, Oda drew the floor plan of the Sunny in SPS and the
- 1:27:30Mary too earlier. What's neat cool that we have the floor plan. Maybe
- 1:27:36someone could post that in the discord. Also on that topic, I did
- 1:27:43want to bring up to you. Uh, there's a bunch of cover those
- 1:27:47cover art stories from the manga that don't get adapted into the anime at all.
- 1:27:53There's a couple that you haven't uh, we haven't had you go through.
- 1:27:58We'd probably recommend reading him sometimes soon because you know, there's it is
- 1:28:01possible, like with the hell Mepo Kobe stuff and Lufy's grandfather one, it's
- 1:28:08possible these things can become relevant. Um, gotcha. But yeah, just
- 1:28:15some of us. One of us will probably send you that soon. Okay,
- 1:28:18cool. I thought I would deliver that onto you. As you know
- 1:28:21from the One Piece Crew, that's a thing we've been talking about. I
- 1:28:27also want to mention, did you watch the trailer for the live action?
- 1:28:30I have watched the trailer. I am trying to I don't. I try
- 1:28:38to never get excited about trailers because trailers are by their nature deception and true,
- 1:28:45like they're never going to really show you that what the finished product is
- 1:28:48going to be, like it's not possible, and so I don't. I
- 1:28:51try not to hold too much stock in them, but like, I'm tentatively
- 1:28:55excited. I think the casting is on point. I love the cat top
- 1:29:00to bottom. I think the like some of it feels a little weird,
- 1:29:05but almost like, well, yeah, I'm used to this being in cartoon,
- 1:29:06this is in life action. It's going to the transition is going to
- 1:29:10feel a little odd. I want to give it a shot. The sets
- 1:29:13look nice. It seems like they're doing a lot of things practical where they're
- 1:29:15able to you know, I'm going to give it a shot. Yeah,
- 1:29:20I'm pretty excited about it. And it's been commissioned for those listening who didn't
- 1:29:25know the whole first season, so I'll be watching it. I think it
- 1:29:30doesn't come out until August, and I think I actually started in August,
- 1:29:34so it won't be too long after, might be September, but either way
- 1:29:41it's it won't be too long of a wait between when it drops and when
- 1:29:44I get to cover it. So I'm really excited about it because I was
- 1:29:47sort of expecting that it was going to come out and I wasn't going to
- 1:29:49be able to watch it. And there's a possibility, I guess very slight
- 1:29:56that, like there's spoilers for later stuff in the main series that they decided
- 1:30:01to just drop into the live action as like Easter Egg stuff, or maybe
- 1:30:06they're telling some stories out of order. I don't know, but hopefully not.
- 1:30:11I don't. I don't see any reason to expect that, just sometimes
- 1:30:15they'll do that with things that are huge series. Um, but yeah,
- 1:30:18I'm pretty stoked back in into cover that. So anybody's listening who wants to
- 1:30:23hear you talk about it, you'll get to it's coming. And Zoro is
- 1:30:27bay as hell, oh my god, Lord of Mercy also, so I'll
- 1:30:34just pretty bay. I also really like the actor they got for USAP because
- 1:30:39USAP is also one of my personal bays. And then, yes, speaking
- 1:30:42of I did want to say, well, I'm not the biggest fan of
- 1:30:45this ark in general, USA. I'm actually really behind a listening to the
- 1:30:50episodes. I Since moving, I haven't had a lot of time for listening
- 1:30:54to podcasts except for A Song of Ice and Fire, which is the one
- 1:30:57thing. I'm staying on top of you, Rashwan on that one. Um,
- 1:31:01But so I don't know what your reaction to it was. But the
- 1:31:04USA Perona fight is to me another one of the lights of this arc.
- 1:31:09Like that one was so fun and I don't know why it gives me so
- 1:31:13much joy. But the whole thing that her power doesn't work on him because
- 1:31:16he's basically already depressed and has low steam is just so it was a genius.
- 1:31:21It was. It was very genius. Yeah, I love that that
- 1:31:27being like the one time that he's like trusting the Eye can handle her.
- 1:31:30You guys go on ahead of course, it's it's the depression monster. Yeah.
- 1:31:36And then eventually and the ghosts get depressed themselves and they they stop and
- 1:31:47like a hang their heads, and he's had the same effect on them that
- 1:31:51they're supposed to have on him. That was so good. I loved it
- 1:31:55so much. Anyway, all right, it's to wrap up. Is there
- 1:32:00anything else that you wanted to say before we finished this episode off? I
- 1:32:05guess before we finished it off. I mentioned this before we started, you
- 1:32:09know, doing the podcast part. But I'm actually a regular podcaster. Now
- 1:32:14if you're at all interested at RPG video games. Check out RPG book Club.
