- 0:12Hello friends, it's shown here. It is Friday, it's the 23rd of
- 0:18February and here we are at the end of another week.
- 0:21Good on you. You've made it.
- 0:23I've made it back to the end and we are in for a treat.
- 0:28Today we read the wonderful Psalm 105.
- 0:32This is far from the shortest Sam.
- 0:36This summer just has so much praise and Thanksgiving for our
- 0:41wonderful God. In fact, so seminal are these
- 0:44statements of thankfulness that so many traditions, the Jewish,
- 0:49the Orthodox, Anglican, Catholic, Lutheran, they have
- 0:52all used these words, put them to music and made them part of
- 0:57their liturgy because they are just so beautiful and lyrical.
- 1:01And so you might hear some of these verses and think, oh, that
- 1:04rings a bell. I recognise that, yes, they have
- 1:08become part of the rhythm of many of our Fate liturgies, So
- 1:12that is wonderful. And as I prepare myself for my
- 1:16ordination tomorrow, this, does that mean that today is the last
- 1:20time I get to be irreverent? Because then tomorrow I'm
- 1:22reverend. I I don't know.
- 1:24I hope not. Surely not.
- 1:26I can still be little irreverent.
- 1:27I guess we'll find out next week.
- 1:30No, no, it's nothing like that. But today, or whatever is going
- 1:34on in your lives in your hearts as you prepare for today, your
- 1:39Friday and the weekend to come, I just pray that we can put that
- 1:43all down had come before our incredibly worthy God with
- 1:49hearts full of thankfulness. This together with the Sarmast,
- 1:54we read these words. We celebrate these words of
- 1:58Psalm 105. Give thanks to the Lord and
- 2:11proclaim His greatness, that the whole world knows what He has
- 2:16done. Sing to Him.
- 2:18Yes, sing his praises. Tell everyone about his
- 2:22wonderful deeds. Exult in his holy name.
- 2:26Rejoice, you who worship the Lord.
- 2:29Search for the Lord and for his strength.
- 2:32Continually seek him. Remember the wonders he has
- 2:36performed, his miracles and the rulings he has given you.
- 2:41Children of his servant Abraham, you descendants of Jacob, his
- 2:45chosen ones. He is the Lord our God.
- 2:50His justice is seen throughout the land.
- 2:53He always stands by his covenant, the commitment he made
- 2:57to 1000 generations. This is the covenant he made
- 3:02with Abraham and the oath he swore to Isaac.
- 3:06He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree and to the people of
- 3:09Israel as a never ending covenant.
- 3:13I will give you the land of Canaan as your special
- 3:17possession. He said this when there were few
- 3:20in number. A tiny group of strangers in
- 3:23Canaan. They wandered from nation to
- 3:26nation, from one Kingdom to another.
- 3:29Yet he did not let anyone oppress them.
- 3:32He warned kings on their behalf. Do not touch my chosen people
- 3:37and do not hurt my prophets. He called for a famine on the
- 3:42land of Canaan, cutting off its food supply.
- 3:45Then it sent someone to Egypt ahead of them Joseph, who was
- 3:49sold as a slave. They bruised his feet with
- 3:53fetters and placed his neck in an iron collar until the time
- 3:58came to fulfil his dreams. The Lord tested Joseph's
- 4:02character, then Pharaoh sent for him and set him free.
- 4:06The ruler of the nation opened his prison door.
- 4:11Joseph was put in charge of all the King's household.
- 4:14He became ruler over all the King's possessions.
- 4:18He could instruct the King's aides as he pleased and teach
- 4:22the King's advisers. Then Israel arrived in Egypt,
- 4:27Jacob lived as a foreigner in the land of Ham, and the Lord
- 4:31multiplied the people of Israel until they became too mighty for
- 4:35their enemies. Then he turned the Egyptians
- 4:38against the Israelites, and they plotted against the Lord's
- 4:41servants. But the Lord sent his servant
- 4:45Moses along with Aaron, whom he had chosen.
- 4:50They perform miraculous signs among the Egyptians and wonders
- 4:55in the land of Ham. The Lord blanketed Egypt in
- 4:58darkness, for they had defied his commands to let his people
- 5:02go. He turned their water into
- 5:05blood, poisoning all the fish, then frogs over around the land
- 5:10and even invaded the King's bedrooms.
- 5:13When the Lord spoke, flies descended on the Egyptians and
- 5:17gnats swarmed across Egypt. He sent them hail instead of
- 5:21rain, and lightning flashed over the land.
- 5:25He ruined their great vines and fig trees and shattered all the
- 5:28trees he spoke, and hordes of locusts came, young locusts
- 5:34beyond number. They ate up everything green in
- 5:37the land, destroying all the crops in their fields, that he
- 5:42killed the oldest son in each Egyptian home, the pride and joy
- 5:46of each family. The Lord brought his people out
- 5:51of Egypt, loaded with silver and gold, and not one among the
- 5:56tribes of Israel even stumbled. Egypt was glad when they were
- 6:00gone, for they feared them greatly.
- 6:04The Lord spread a cloud above them as a covering, and gave
- 6:09them a great fire to light the darkness.
- 6:12They asked for meat, and he sent them quail.
- 6:16He satisfied their hunger with manna.
- 6:18Bread from heaven, he split open a rock and water gushed out to
- 6:24form a river through the dry wasteland.
- 6:27For he remembered his sacred promise to his servant Abraham.
- 6:31So he brought his people out of Egypt with joy, his chosen ones
- 6:37With rejoicing, he gave his people the lands of Pagan
- 6:41nations, and they harvested crops that others had planted.
- 6:46This all happened so they would follow his decrees and obey His
- 6:52instructions. Praise the Lord,
- 7:07Lord, We are part of a long story of you walking with your
- 7:12people. For thousands and thousands of
- 7:16years you have loved us and our ancestors where we are.
- 7:21You have shaped the world around us for our good and for your
- 7:26glory. And here we stand today, Lord,
- 7:31we are your people. We are your chosen ones, and we
- 7:37just offer our lives to you, use us, mould us, lead us.
- 7:45Thank you for the the land of Canaan that you give us in our
- 7:49lives, whatever that looks like, the blessings that are abundant
- 7:55and so good, and fill our hearts with joy and fulfil so many
- 8:02needs that we have, some that we don't even know that you are the
- 8:06one who fulfils them. You are a good God, a faithful
- 8:12God, and we give you our thanks, just as the Psalmist did.
- 8:18We pray all of this in the saving name of your son, Jesus
- 8:24oh man.
