- 1:47someone else, but it's me. It's me. It's me. I am
- 1:52the visionary of the Crew podcast, and tonight I get a chance to interview
- 1:59the inner if you were so. She's been interviewing all of the hosts throughout
- 2:04this first season here on the Crew podcast, y'all, I tell you,
- 2:08I'm excited to come from behind the scene to be able to interview this young
- 2:14lady and get an opportunity for you guys to get up posting personal with her
- 2:20on tonight. So I want you guys to share this in your circle of
- 2:23influence. For those that do not know who I am, of course,
- 2:27I am the Queen of Collaborations. I am the visionary of this amazing network
- 2:32along with as far as an office magazine, and my whole desire is to
- 2:38be the change that I desire to see in this world. And I am
- 2:40so so happy to be able to present to you guys tonight this young lady
- 2:46who's definitely being a part of the change that she wants to see in this
- 2:52world. She's doing it in the literary world. She is, when I
- 2:55tell you, she is stepping out of her circle, her box and exploring
- 3:04some things. I'm excited for what God is doing for her. But I
- 3:07want to move out the way and I'm gonna allow her to introduce herself.
- 3:12So come on, come on, come on, eh Hi everyone, Hey,
- 3:19hey, hey, hey, how you doing. I am good,
- 3:23you guys. I am not doing an interviewing tonight. Yay, you get
- 3:28to learn about me. What's going on girly? Wow wow Wow. Well,
- 3:36I tell you there's not a whole lot going on with me. Always
- 3:42same old, same old. I'm glad to be able to come from behind
- 3:46the scenes and be able to do this on tonight. I tell you it's
- 3:50an honor and a privilege to be able to share you with the world because
- 3:55I'll sit back and I have truly watched you grow. I watched you develop
- 4:01your gift and your talent, and you've allowed the world to see exactly a
- 4:08little bit about yourself. But if you would if you would just start off
- 4:13by just letting everybody that may not know you, because I'm sure we are
- 4:19expanding, so we're getting some new some new viewers here and there. So
- 4:25those that may not know you, if you would briefly introduce yourself. So,
- 4:32my name is Patre Scrubble, and I am known as as C Book
- 4:38Gal A four three and I am from South Carolina area code A for three,
- 4:44so that's Charleston. And oh lord, what can I tell you,
- 4:47guys? I worked for the Charlston Colley Public Library System. Love you guys,
- 4:55my herd, Saint Andrew's family. There's so many of them for eighteen
- 5:00years, you guys. Like when I first started, I could not find
- 5:05a book on the shelf. But now it's a whole different ball game.
- 5:13Like I love African American authors and indie authors because the indie authors, y'all
- 5:23have that hunger that comes through your books. I'm a mother too. My
- 5:30oldest sister, James, he's gonna be twenty one in December, happy birthday.
- 5:35And my youngest one is eight, and that's that little girl of Naya,
- 5:44my auntie to my three nephews. I called him to Giffred Crewe,
- 5:48Eric TL and King aka Kevin. And I have two beautiful sisters who work
- 5:55on my nerves, a host of family. I just love the world of
- 6:02lit. I love literature. I love books. I love I love children's
- 6:11books that show diversity. Because when I first started reading to my twenty one
- 6:15year old, we had to read books about dogs and no inflant, you
- 6:20guys, the little white kids, and we couldn't relate to it. And
- 6:25now my eight year old, there is just so many books that portray her
- 6:30as a main character. So it's a love I'm a podcaster for the crew
- 6:39and my show on the second and fourth. But that's going to be changing
- 6:44and it's a good thing. We'll talk about that later. What else,
- 6:49Yeah, that's all I did. I can't think of nothing else. Wow,
- 7:00you you you talked about diversity so as a black librarian, because y'all
- 7:08are very few in numbers compared to the amount of liberians it is in this
- 7:15world. Have you experienced or faced any type of represent representation as far as
- 7:29diversity in the literary world? Have you faced any challenges personally at work?
- 7:40I have, And Uh, it's funny because I would have the individuals come
- 7:46to the desk and they'll be like one of them was blinking. He was
- 7:50like, can you go get somebody back there who knows what to do?
- 7:57Or can you go get somebody else to do it? And I'm like,
- 8:00okay, cool, I'll go back there and get someone and to only come
- 8:05full circle because the person I got back there actually needed me to help.
- 8:11So it's funny because I come back out like, hey, so you need
- 8:13help again, and they'll look at me like, oh, so, I've
- 8:20seen it on the negative side, but I've also seen it on the positive
- 8:22side, whereas I would go to schools and the kids be like, you
- 8:26work at a library. I'm like, yeah, what's up. You don't
- 8:31act like you work at a library, So what does the library and look
- 8:33like? And they would tell me old, wrinkle lady with glasses. Well
- 8:37I ain't old, I ain't wrinkled, but I do wear glasses. So
- 8:41I'm one of the three. So on both ends. Yes, I have
- 8:46dealt with it positively and negatively. So what are some insight for stories or
- 8:58experiences you can and share with us that you have experienced being a librarian in
- 9:07Charleston, South Carolina. Wow, one I have to ad meet. It
- 9:16has been the people that I work with. My heard Saint Andrew's family,
- 9:22and they're beautiful. It's literally a family, you guys, literally a family.
- 9:30So they make every day going to work in us helping each other.
- 9:37It's it's just like the puzzle piece together another. Well. One of the
- 9:43biggest things that has happened so far, and why I say so far because
- 9:48I know God has so much in store for me, is this year I
- 9:54was the recipient of the twenty twenty three Cynthia Graham Her Award and Leyman's term,
- 10:03it's the Employee of the Year. But it was such an honor to
- 10:09have this award that was named after my mentor, Cynthia, and to think
- 10:20that my coworkers felt this way about me to give me this award, it
- 10:28was like even more better. I love to see my kids. I used
- 10:35to deal with teens, and I used to work in teen services. Now
- 10:39I'm solely in adult services. So after eighteen years, you're seeing your teens.
- 10:46Now there are adults and they have their own kids, and they come
- 10:50back with their kids and they'd be like, hey, miss Retries, remember
- 10:52I give you that hard time. That's like, so what are you doing
- 10:56with your life now? All mister Trees, I had to do and at
- 10:58this and that, and to think that you played a factor in their lives
- 11:05and they have such a great experience and now they're bringing their kids back.
- 11:11It's like, where else can you get this feeling to wake up in the
- 11:20morning be like, yes, another day I get to go there. I
- 11:22get to introduce another young man sometimes to a book, or another young lady
- 11:28to a book, or this old lady who wants to read the street literature.
- 11:31And you're like, all right, now me find out. So,
- 11:37yeah, there's so many different stories I have, but those are the ones
- 11:41that I keep near to me. I can hear the passion you have about
- 11:50being a librarian and being able to impact individuals in the literary aspect of the
- 11:58world. What would be your advice to someone that was thinking about becoming a
- 12:07librarian or you would encourage someone to become a librarian, because you know that
- 12:16that's not something that you hear people pushing. It's not a profession that you
- 12:22hear a lot about, so it has to be a need for it.
- 12:26So what would you say to someone that's listening, that enjoys reading and enjoy
- 12:35books, how could you convince that person to get into becoming a library?
- 12:41And are there men? Are there men a librarian? Oh? Yes there
- 12:46are. My manager actually is a male and he's like one of the coolest
- 12:52people I've ever met. It was He's so cool. It's the albar had
- 12:58sof Tia. There are some black male librarians. I got mister Ray and
- 13:07we got mister g Missus Gerald. There are two African American male branch managers.
- 13:13So they're not just librarians, these are branch managers. So it's like
- 13:20koodles to them. So I am a librarian by years of experience. Okay,
- 13:26I am what you call a para professional. So in other words,
- 13:31I don't have that beautiful degree. Now. I can hear my ad in
- 13:37my head right now, and my AD is that's the admin team. They're
- 13:41like the third under the director. And I can hear them say, Okay,
- 13:48Trees, you know you can get the degree. You can get a
- 13:50degree, but I am a mother first. So I do a lot of
- 13:56webinars. I do a lot of training to make sure that I am always
- 14:01current on what's going on in the world of libraries. Now. There are
- 14:09individuals who I work with that are becoming librarians. And if you're an African
- 14:13American, I'm telling you there are so many scholarships out there that you can
- 14:22literally go to school for free, like for free, you guys. And
- 14:28you would think, like, well, Trees, why I want you to
- 14:31go to school, Because, like I just said, I'm a mother first,
- 14:33and I'm going with the valume of mother like, Okay, I've had
- 14:43my chance. I've got an eight year old now, and I want her
- 14:46to have me behind her one hundred percent. But that won't stop me from
- 14:52the goals that I have because look, I got things I got to do.
- 14:56I got somebody right here. The side I think would be who has
- 15:03my back and who pushes me? So I would say go for it.
- 15:11If you don't want to go to school, go work embody yourself with your
- 15:22vision. You want to become a library, You want to spread the word
- 15:26of diversity, you want to spread the word of literature. Have books around
- 15:30you. Twenty four to seven. If I was to take my camera off,
- 15:33and God, I will not do that to you guys, you will
- 15:35find you will find books in every single point of my house. Yes,
- 15:43every everywhere there's a book. And why because I know that's where my heart
- 15:46is. So if that's what you want to do, get those scholarships,
- 15:50stick to it, keep going. If you don't want to do the educational
- 15:54route, then you can be an associated specialist, a pair of professional you
- 16:00can go that route. But if your life is in literature, go for
- 16:03it. We need more of us. So, okay, I know you.
- 16:14Oftentimes I hear you on your shows oftentimes talking about urban literature, self
- 16:22published authors, things of that nature. As a librarian, because I want
- 16:27to be able to tie your profession into the things that you do outside as
- 16:33well. So, as a librarian, what advice would you give to self
- 16:37published authors that's looking to promote and sell their books effectively. Well, something
- 16:45I gotta do for myself, and I try to do it all the time,
- 16:48and I'm seeing a little glimpse of where I'm being consistent. Consistency is
- 16:56it show up for yourself. Somebody told us I wanna sera Dames Angela.
- 17:03Show up for yourself. You are the first promoter of your book. You
- 17:11you feed the passion, You set the fire. If the fire is hot,
- 17:15people gonna come because they want to get warm, and they want to
- 17:18know what's going on with the fire. They want to know why is this
- 17:19fire sitting here out of all this heat? Why is this fire here?
- 17:25And you're gonna draw them in. But the only way they're gonna draw in
- 17:27is if you show that passion first, and the passion of the fire.
- 17:32So show up for yourself, be consistent, passionate fire, and ignore others
- 17:38around you, those naysayers. So also are their resources at the library that
- 17:52self published authors can use. Ooh, you guys who are in Charston,
- 18:00South Carolina. Some of the Chalston Doorge if you just want to come down
- 18:06here. This month is National Authors. We call it Nana Rama National Authors
- 18:14writing something in another but I call it National Writing Month. And this month
- 18:21we are showcasing how to be self published. I even got a guy who
- 18:27names Julian who this classes at our library did a podcast class. We have
- 18:32four people show them they wanted to start their own podcasts. We have a
- 18:37group that's going to be talking about panel discussions on how to start a book,
- 18:44write a book, get over the writer's block, self publishing versus going
- 18:52to a publishing house. We have a computer that has Adobe that you can
- 18:59do your or you can make your cover, you can type your book.
- 19:07We have a creative studio at our library where you can put your book together
- 19:11and you can have that one baby copy for yourself. So we have a
- 19:15lot of resources, especially in the month of November. So stop by the
- 19:21library. Almost all the libraries you can tell Miss Patrice. But if you
- 19:25want to stop by Herds and Andrews, that's why it's actually savor, come
- 19:29on by. So do you know of any platforms or do you suggest any
- 19:40platforms that self published authors may be able to showcase their book on. So
- 19:49there are plenty of platforms, you guys, and there are plenty of levels.
- 19:52Okay, you have Whitpad, you have another one it is called book
- 20:00Matts, Blurb, you have your Amazon. There are little ones that around.
- 20:11I would always say, look at your budget, but then also invest.
- 20:17Okay, don't think, oh, I'm gonna go for the free option.
- 20:19Whereas if you don't drink Starbucks for about a month, you would save
- 20:26up what close five hundred dollars and you can invest a little bit more.
- 20:32So that's just where you're publishing purposes. Now marketing, Oh my god,
- 20:37you got all these free social media out here. I mean I've screenshot so
- 20:42many books off of TikTok to isn't honey? And on Facebook I just gave
- 20:48up because it was always a new book that I was seeing. And let's
- 20:55say you do you want to now invest in and social media marketing? You
- 21:02have Canva. Canva is now my best friend. And if you need help
- 21:06with any of that, of course, you got YouTube in university. And
- 21:10then you do have individuals who are able to guide you. Wayne's Transformation that's
- 21:18my podcast, sister. You have this lady here on the side, Miss
- 21:22Queen collaboration. You have them, so you have so many avenues to the
- 21:26point that you have no excuse not to get your book out there. Wow.
- 21:40So what can we expect from Patrise in twenty twenty four? You know
- 21:52what you guys, I don't know, but I will tell you it'll be
- 21:56more than what you got in twenty twenty three. And that's gonna be a
- 21:59lie, because angel I can tell you if you saw me in twenty twenty
- 22:06two, you would never believe me right here at twenty twenty three. Twenty
- 22:11twenty two was a year of loss for me. Lost a best friend,
- 22:22lost my mother, lost some marriage, and twenty twenty three I'll never forget
- 22:33New Year's ey. Well before New Year's Eve, I had a friend.
- 22:40She told me to go wipe your face. I was like, I can't
- 22:45what. She kept on telling me, go wipe your face, and I
- 22:48was like, all right, I'm gonna go do this. But I never
- 22:51know that one simple act when she was talking to me, she was feeding
- 22:57into my spirit because God God knows, Andrew Can told me I was crying.
- 23:02I was not nosing you, guys, I was a hot mess.
- 23:06So to see what twenty twenty two to twenty twenty three, and God,
- 23:10how much He has blessed me in twenty twenty three, even my kids,
- 23:15even my nephews, my sisters, my family in general. I am.
- 23:19I don't know what he has me in twenty twenty four. All I know
- 23:22is I'm gonna buckle up and I'm gonna go for this ride. Well,
- 23:33you have a question, Black Diamond said, what would you say to someone
- 23:37who would like to switch generals? Do it? Do it? Genres is
- 23:47just an enclosed box, and I love to see authors jump out of that
- 23:52box because it kind of introduced you to a whole new a whole new world.
- 24:00Okay, me starting off for just reading street lit. Then I started
- 24:03doing contemporary, and then I started doing Christian fiction, and I never knew
- 24:08that I would go through all those. Now I'm actually starting to read fantasy.
- 24:17Never if I thought I would read fantasy. But I'm there, so
- 24:22feel free jump out of it. Just go for it, girl, Trevida.
- 24:32I see your comment. God will blow your mind if you're allowed him
- 24:34access. Oh allowed access? So one more question? And so will Patria
- 24:52ever write a book? Why? I feel like that was a setup?
- 24:57Question? Will I ever write a book, I think I will, But
- 25:14what it would be about, I have no idea. Because if I write
- 25:18about my life and this roller coaster I've been on, you guys will think
- 25:22I'm lying. I would have to pull out receipts. When I pull out
- 25:26receipts, he'd be like, Oh, this chick was serious. So yes,
- 25:30I would like to write a book. I am a part of some
- 25:33anthologies, so I can see that in the future. Yes, ma'am Treda,
- 25:45I will see what well I tell you. I truly, truly have
- 25:52enjoyed chatting with you on tonight. I hope those that are tuned in have
- 25:56been blessed by you on tonight. I look forward to seeing all that God
- 26:02hands in store for you. How can people follow and support the things that
- 26:07you're doing and stay connected to you to see what you're doing in twenty twenty
- 26:11four everything sc book Gals and friends on all social media and if you can't
- 26:19formulas, you can do sc book out A for three the crew, always
- 26:26with the crew and Facebook. My name is Patrise Grumble. Look for me.
- 26:36It's going to be some audio reviews, which I've got two of them
- 26:40coming up. We've got book reviews, more authors interviews, because I'm going
- 26:45from two days you guys a week, so every week, every week,
