Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: It's a podcast called twenty five Whist.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Stockings and they are wearing a whist. So, yeah, it's
- 0:11Speaker 2: too bad, But what did you expect?
- 0:13Speaker 3: It's a podcast called twenty five whist souls.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Wine, you guys, sounds so stupid.
- 0:20Speaker 3: Why don't we talk about it before? If you're not
- 0:22Speaker 3: gonna jump off?
- 0:23Speaker 2: I was reading a note, ready to note, read note,
- 0:27Speaker 2: my bad, my bad man. There's a lot. There's a
- 0:29Speaker 2: lot to go. We have Jason Garrett coming up. All right,
- 0:32Speaker 2: go ahead. Do you want to talk about that thing
- 0:34Speaker 2: happened last week where the old guy slapped the person? Yeah?
- 0:36Speaker 3: What on earth at your Wrigley Field?
- 0:38Speaker 2: You want to set it up? Yeah? So the Cubs
- 0:41Speaker 2: are playing a baseball game.
- 0:42Speaker 3: I don't know who they're playing. But in the stands,
- 0:46Speaker 3: this kid's not standing up for the national anthem. So
- 0:48Speaker 3: an old man that's sitting behind him says.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Get up, what are you doing? Stand up?
- 0:52Speaker 3: The kid does not stand up, and I say kid,
- 0:54Speaker 3: he's probably in his twenties, does not stand up. So
- 0:57Speaker 3: the old man, what's he do? Slaps him in the head.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Stand up.
- 1:01Speaker 3: It's the national anthem, And even people around are like, dude,
- 1:05Speaker 3: what are you doing? Like, why are you hitting them?
- 1:08Speaker 3: And he said he didn't want to stand up. Whose
- 1:10Speaker 3: side are you on?
- 1:11Speaker 2: What are your thoughts?
- 1:13Speaker 3: I don't like that the kid didn't stand up. I
- 1:16Speaker 3: think that's dumb for whatever reason. But don't hit anyone.
- 1:21Speaker 3: You can't hit someone.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Okay, whose side are you on?
- 1:24Speaker 1: So?
- 1:25Speaker 3: I mean, if I had to pick a side, I
- 1:28Speaker 3: would be a little disappointed like the man, but I
- 1:32Speaker 3: would have to take the kid's side for you know,
- 1:34Speaker 3: just getting You can't get.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Hit exactly the right side. Yeah, we're not Nazi Germany.
- 1:39Speaker 2: You don't have to make people patriotic. You hope they are.
- 1:41Speaker 2: You hope they stand up. I stand up anytime I
- 1:44Speaker 2: stand up, take my hat off of my hand in
- 1:46Speaker 2: my heart. That's the thing I feel that I should do.
- 1:49Speaker 2: But I don't feel like people have. I mean, forced
- 1:54Speaker 2: patriotism is what North Korea does, it's what China does,
- 2:00Speaker 2: That's what Nazi Germany did. So I am patriotic. I
- 2:06Speaker 2: stand up, but I also don't believe everybody has to
- 2:08Speaker 2: do everything that I do. And I hope they do.
- 2:11Speaker 2: But don't you don't hit. You don't hit because of it. No,
- 2:13Speaker 2: you can't hit, so you can even say, I'm very
- 2:15Speaker 2: disappointed in you, and that's okay, but you can't hit somebody.
- 2:18Speaker 2: And and again you don't want forced patriotism because that's
- 2:22Speaker 2: North Korea.
- 2:23Speaker 4: Also, what if the kid is from another country.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Yeah, remember when Wimby he wasn't singing along to the
- 2:28Speaker 2: national anthem, he have his hand on his heart. People
- 2:30Speaker 2: are like, he's not even like, dude, he's not from
- 2:32Speaker 2: America's it's also not it's not his national anthem, right,
- 2:37Speaker 2: and he's in the country. If he chooses to, that's great,
- 2:39Speaker 2: but that's not his nation.
- 2:41Speaker 3: So you know, there are some countries where they kind
- 2:43Speaker 3: of do the Nazi salute as there.
- 2:46Speaker 2: I put your arm down in just in case the video,
- 2:48Speaker 2: I wouldn't hand over the heart thank you.
- 2:53Speaker 3: But yeah, I've been like in Mexico, one of them
- 2:55Speaker 3: is like they do that, and I was like, that's
- 2:57Speaker 3: very strange.
- 2:59Speaker 2: I don't like it that the kid didn't stand up.
- 3:01Speaker 2: I would have been disappointed, But you don't hit. And also,
- 3:04Speaker 2: you don't force people to patriotic. You know how to
- 3:06Speaker 2: make people not patriotic, try to force them to be patriotic. Yeah,
- 3:08Speaker 2: you know how to make people patriotic. Have a great
- 3:10Speaker 2: country and have people proud of living in it and
- 3:12Speaker 2: then hopefully they stand up like like you're doing you
- 3:15Speaker 2: know what? Though the guy ended up standing up yeah,
- 3:17Speaker 2: because you canet beat up because he was like, okay,
- 3:20Speaker 2: I'll get up. Yeah. Yeah, that's a crazy story. That
- 3:23Speaker 2: was crazy, dude, that's a crazy story. The lebron too,
- 3:28Speaker 2: Philadelphia happened on Friday. It's just fun. They're gonna be
- 3:32Speaker 2: so good. It's fun. I think I think I'd prefer
- 3:36Speaker 2: them to go to Golden State because I just like
- 3:38Speaker 2: to see him and stuff together, like the Olympics. That
- 3:40Speaker 2: was fun and they're both old and it's like, uh
- 3:43Speaker 2: that show it was it called road Hogs or something
- 3:45Speaker 2: where all the old men were in a motorcycle gang
- 3:47Speaker 2: like Tim Allen and Wild Dogs. Wild Dogs, Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 3:50Speaker 2: I remember that one. I think I missed that. It's
- 3:52Speaker 2: not that good, but it was like old guys one
- 3:55Speaker 2: last run doubt and also Draymond who's older too. Yeah,
- 4:01Speaker 2: that had been fun. Beside that, I really didn't want
- 4:04Speaker 2: him to go to Cleveland. Who cares, We've already done
- 4:07Speaker 2: We've done that, yeah, been there. Didn't want them to
- 4:09Speaker 2: go to Miami. Who cares, he's done it already, so
- 4:12Speaker 2: Minnesota would have been interesting. But I think if I
- 4:15Speaker 2: were to have picked, it had been Golden State one
- 4:17Speaker 2: Philadelphia too, But I definitely did not think he was
- 4:20Speaker 2: gonna go to the seventy six ers.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Why would he want to go to Philadelphia.
- 4:24Speaker 2: That team's built, Yeah, all five of them, Edge Comb
- 4:29Speaker 2: Jalen just went.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Over Yeah, MAXI, yep, indeed when he plays, that's five.
- 4:36Speaker 2: The problem there is usage. All those guys want to
- 4:39Speaker 2: need the ball. But they'll figure that out.
- 4:42Speaker 3: That's what I was thinking, Like, how are they going
- 4:44Speaker 3: to share the ball because there are so many big
- 4:47Speaker 3: name players that are used to carrying the team. Maxi's
- 4:50Speaker 3: carried the team. Jalen carried the Celtics. Lebron he carried
- 4:55Speaker 3: the Lakers. Well, try to carry the Lakers, but you.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Know what I mean, Like he did carry Lakes the
- 4:59Speaker 2: entire first round of the play off, right, Yeah, there's
- 5:01Speaker 2: only one ball, dudes. But I think they'll probably limit
- 5:06Speaker 2: both Embead and Lebron, especially early on, so you let
- 5:10Speaker 2: that thing fix itself. They have a team that's loaded.
- 5:13Speaker 2: I think they're tied for first in the East odds wise,
- 5:17Speaker 2: not overall, but I think they're tied with the Knicks.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Odds they'll be a really good team if they can
- 5:23Speaker 2: stay healthy. Lebron's usually healthy. He has things occasionally that
- 5:27Speaker 2: pop up, but he's never had any injury that's kept
- 5:30Speaker 2: him out for half a season and beads out all
- 5:33Speaker 2: the time.
- 5:34Speaker 3: If you think about it, it's just amazing. I mean,
- 5:36Speaker 3: he must have the best doctors to keep him healthy, right,
- 5:40Speaker 3: because how are you that age moving at. I mean,
- 5:45Speaker 3: he's slower, obviously because because he's older, but I mean
- 5:48Speaker 3: he's not slower than any of the players. He's just
- 5:50Speaker 3: slower than what Lebron used to be.
- 5:52Speaker 2: I would say, it's not really doctors, it's just investment
- 5:55Speaker 2: in being proactive with his body, you know, going and
- 6:00Speaker 2: sauna and red light and massages and stretching and changing
- 6:06Speaker 2: his workouts all of that, and of course doctors too.
- 6:09Speaker 2: But it's all of that because if you could just
- 6:11Speaker 2: pay a doctor, dude, I still be twenty five on
- 6:13Speaker 2: the pickleball court. I know that easy. I could just
- 6:16Speaker 2: pay a doctor.
- 6:17Speaker 3: Uh So is Bronnie going to the seventy six ers
- 6:20Speaker 3: now too? So that whole thing like just died out right,
- 6:24Speaker 3: Like I'm gonna play just so I can play with Bronnie.
- 6:26Speaker 2: He did, I know.
- 6:27Speaker 3: But then now it's like, all right, Bronnie, see you,
- 6:29Speaker 3: I'm gonna keep playing to win championships.
- 6:30Speaker 2: So he didn't even announce that he wasn't staying with
- 6:32Speaker 2: the Lakers until it was a deadline for them to
- 6:36Speaker 2: sign Bronnie. So Bronnie signed a two million dollar deal
- 6:39Speaker 2: and then the next day Lebron's like, I'm out. Okay,
- 6:42Speaker 2: So he made to make sure that happened. Yeah, they
- 6:44Speaker 2: can cut him, but they got to pay him. But
- 6:47Speaker 2: Bronnie is still a Laker. Yeah, I don't think they're
- 6:50Speaker 2: going to trade him. But what do I know. I
- 6:51Speaker 2: didn't think he was going to the seventy six ers. Yeah,
- 6:52Speaker 2: that's crazy. So that's fun. Tony Romo got a OUI
- 6:58Speaker 2: whatever that is? What was that creating?
- 7:00Speaker 5: What?
- 7:00Speaker 2: Yeah in Wisconsin I think is an OUI just what
- 7:03Speaker 2: they call it.
- 7:04Speaker 3: But basically he was just driving drunk, Yeah, got it.
- 7:08Speaker 2: His much SHOT's pretty funny.
- 7:09Speaker 3: D I'm telling you, the the internet just having a
- 7:11Speaker 3: field day with this.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Is really funny. I haven't seen any of the field day.
- 7:14Speaker 3: There are just so many, like like the Hispanic populations,
- 7:18Speaker 3: so have you ever played look Adio, which is like
- 7:19Speaker 3: a Mexican bingo, and instead of like numbers in a letter,
- 7:23Speaker 3: it's like El Corasona. It's a picture of a heart.
- 7:27Speaker 3: And there's one that I always thought was funny when
- 7:29Speaker 3: I was a kid. It's called Elbraco and it's the
- 7:31Speaker 3: drunk guy. So they've substituted with Tony Romo and he's like, Hey,
- 7:39Speaker 3: that's just funny, dude.
- 7:40Speaker 2: I laught so heart of that stuff.
- 7:41Speaker 3: It's not funny that he got a dui or whatever
- 7:43Speaker 3: it's called, but I mean the fact that the Internet
- 7:46Speaker 3: just makes so much it's just so funny at times.
- 7:50Speaker 2: The one that I did see was him and Jim
- 7:53Speaker 2: Nance talking about the game and Jim Nan said, Hey,
- 7:58Speaker 2: what are the keys to this game? And he goes,
- 7:59Speaker 2: I can't get I can't have keys anymore because I
- 8:03Speaker 2: got just busted driving or whatever it was. I did
- 8:06Speaker 2: see that one that was funny. Yeah, they're just so quick.
- 8:09Speaker 2: They're like, they won't let me have my keys anymore, Jim, Yeah,
- 8:14Speaker 2: what are the details on that? Like CBS analyst and
- 8:17Speaker 2: former Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo had a run in with
- 8:20Speaker 2: the Low Milwaukee According to the athletic while cruising on
- 8:24Speaker 2: southbound I forty three on Thursday evening. Police said they
- 8:26Speaker 2: pulled over Romo and the arrest reports that Romo performed
- 8:30Speaker 2: poorly on the standardized field sobriety tests and was taken
- 8:34Speaker 2: into custody as a result. In Wisconsin, at first o
- 8:37Speaker 2: WI offense can carry a fine of up to three
- 8:40Speaker 2: hundred bucks along with the surch charge, the OWI surcharge.
- 8:45Speaker 2: So I would like to see the body cam.
- 8:48Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, like like when we waited for justin Timmerlakes,
- 8:52Speaker 3: that was worth it.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Yeah, you want to see it. Speaking of wrecks, Kyle
- 8:58Speaker 2: Shanahan had a wreck. Saw that, but it happened like
- 9:01Speaker 2: in July fourteenth to two weeks ago or so, oh.
- 9:03Speaker 3: It wasn't recent, dude. The whole the way they're treating
- 9:07Speaker 3: this whole thing is so weird. It's almost like they're
- 9:09Speaker 3: saying like he's day to day you know in practice, Like, guys,
- 9:12Speaker 3: he's not a player, he's a coach. Like what's the
- 9:14Speaker 3: protocol of like an injury report on a coach. Just
- 9:19Speaker 3: let him recover and then he can come back to coach.
- 9:22Speaker 3: But it seems like the injuries were pretty like substantial.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Like what I read was a couple of broken ribs,
- 9:27Speaker 2: like forty stitches in the face, like bad wreck, and
- 9:31Speaker 2: it was not reported when it happened, and I think
- 9:35Speaker 2: they waited till camp to report it. I don't know why.
- 9:39Speaker 2: I don't know. And then usually like when they hold
- 9:42Speaker 2: back details though, you're always thinking why did they hold
- 9:44Speaker 2: back details? Correct? And why did they not say right then?
- 9:47Speaker 3: And if you were to get into a car accident
- 9:49Speaker 3: or I was going to get a get into a
- 9:50Speaker 3: car accident and we're fine, like we would have no
- 9:53Speaker 3: problem talking about it. Yeah, man, I changed lanes and
- 9:56Speaker 3: this guy t boned me and forty stitches rib whatever,
- 10:01Speaker 3: But when they when you don't talk about it, yeah,
- 10:03Speaker 3: it seems fishy.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Yeah, so we'll just wait, I guess and see and
- 10:09Speaker 2: not only not talk about it like hit basically hit it.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, because the wreck I read was in the
- 10:16Speaker 2: public record, but there were reporters I knew about it
- 10:18Speaker 2: that wouldn't even talk about it yet for some reason. Weird. Yeah,
- 10:21Speaker 2: that's a weird one. I did watch the w NBA
- 10:23Speaker 2: All Star Game?
- 10:24Speaker 4: How was that?
- 10:25Speaker 3: See again the internet? Did you watch the highlight reel? Yeah?
- 10:30Speaker 3: And by highlights, it starts with that three pointer. That's
- 10:33Speaker 3: a complete air ball. I saw probably like four different.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Places, dude.
- 10:37Speaker 3: And then there's miss layups and miss putbacks and then
- 10:40Speaker 3: like steal after steel after steel, hilarious.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Kaylen. Her parents and her grandpa was in town, and
- 10:47Speaker 2: so he watches a lot of WNBA.
- 10:49Speaker 3: Got it your your wife, not Caitlin Clark?
- 10:52Speaker 2: What correct? Well, Kaylen, my wife, Yeah, you were talking
- 10:56Speaker 2: about Caln Clark. So they're in town and her grandpa says,
- 11:00Speaker 2: we're gonna watch the three point shootout, which one he goes,
- 11:07Speaker 2: yeah WNBA. I said, oh, so this is Friday night,
- 11:11Speaker 2: so we find it. We put it on. And USA
- 11:14Speaker 2: Today was already in a bit of a mess because
- 11:17Speaker 2: they had reported that Kaitlin Clark had skipped the Orange Carpet,
- 11:21Speaker 2: which is the WNBA version of the Red Carpet, in
- 11:23Speaker 2: order to get her hair done. Okay, and then they
- 11:27Speaker 2: had to come back later and go, oh, sorry, we're wrong.
- 11:30Speaker 2: She was actually at a charity event for the Kaitlin
- 11:32Speaker 2: Clark Foundation. It is the wildest retraction, so weird the WNBA.
- 11:41Speaker 2: They are cutting off their nose despite their face, like
- 11:44Speaker 2: they're doing everything possible to slander Kaitlin Clark, but she
- 11:47Speaker 2: is the only thing that most people care about, not
- 11:51Speaker 2: all because there have been a few fans of the
- 11:53Speaker 2: WNBA that have existed, but new people coming around are
- 11:57Speaker 2: coming around because of Kaitlyn Clark. I saw a staff
- 12:00Speaker 2: that showed all of the engagement for all social media
- 12:03Speaker 2: in the WNBA, and they showed the Indiana fever, and
- 12:06Speaker 2: they showed every other team individually, and then they showed
- 12:08Speaker 2: every other team combined, and it wasn't that of the fever.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Every team combined did not have the social media engagement
- 12:15Speaker 2: of just the fever. Now it was just one stat
- 12:18Speaker 2: So USA Today does the article Kaylen Clark. First, it
- 12:21Speaker 2: was an article before that where they were comparing Caitlyn
- 12:25Speaker 2: Clark and what she does and how she's flopping. And
- 12:28Speaker 2: then they started talking about Emmett Till and how he
- 12:30Speaker 2: was murdered just so close to and they created this
- 12:34Speaker 2: wild story, wild USA Today story so much so you
- 12:41Speaker 2: read it and you got you got a little angry
- 12:45Speaker 2: because it was totally unneeded and reckless. So then they
- 12:48Speaker 2: do the thing where Kaitlin Clark skips to go to
- 12:50Speaker 2: a charity event or skip for her hair. Then it
- 12:53Speaker 2: was like, oh, sorry, we met charity event, so knew
- 12:57Speaker 2: she wasn't gonna do the three point shootout we're watching,
- 13:01Speaker 2: and yeah, it's fine. They did the one thing. They
- 13:04Speaker 2: had two balls from the logo, but it wasn't the
- 13:06Speaker 2: middle logo. There were three points each. They put like
- 13:09Speaker 2: state farm logos a little deeper than the three point
- 13:12Speaker 2: that's like the three point elbow area. And so that
- 13:16Speaker 2: was kind of cool three point shot to do that. Yeah,
- 13:18Speaker 2: I only saw one or two of them make it,
- 13:20Speaker 2: but yeah, we watched that and oh whatever, and then
- 13:25Speaker 2: we watched the next night the actual game. Yeah. What
- 13:28Speaker 2: were the names of the teams? Coop and Spoon I think,
- 13:30Speaker 2: And there were just older players who were being the
- 13:33Speaker 2: general managers of the teams. And so the Blue team,
- 13:37Speaker 2: which was Caitlin Clarkston, the interest her first and just
- 13:38Speaker 2: got out of the way. It was crazy.
- 13:43Speaker 4: It's just blatant, just they.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Just they want nothing to do with her. The thing is,
- 13:50Speaker 2: if she goes away, so does like general casual interest
- 13:54Speaker 2: in that league period, where would she go? Who knows
- 13:59Speaker 2: start her only playing? Who knows she's not going to
- 14:02Speaker 2: She doesn't want the attention, She's not even being the
- 14:05Speaker 2: one that's so polarizing.
- 14:06Speaker 3: Do you think that there could there be something that
- 14:09Speaker 3: she's done behind closed doors, or something that she's done
- 14:13Speaker 3: to rub people in the league.
- 14:14Speaker 2: The wrong way? But it doesn't matter.
- 14:16Speaker 3: I understand. I understand the monetary benefits and the opportunity
- 14:22Speaker 3: to expand the lead to make it more eyeballs on
- 14:24Speaker 3: the league, all that. I understand all that, But I
- 14:26Speaker 3: wonder if there's something that's rubbing everyone the wrong way.
- 14:30Speaker 2: But but it doesn't matter. You think Michael Jordan rub
- 14:34Speaker 2: people the right way? No? No, you think any of
- 14:36Speaker 2: those pis Larry Bird rub people the right way. No,
- 14:40Speaker 2: everybody hated those guys. But if you're undeniable, not only good,
- 14:45Speaker 2: but also extremely marketable, that lifts the entire league up.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Like they were all flying commercial flights. You know why
- 14:52Speaker 2: they're not now, Why they're flying private A big part
- 14:55Speaker 2: of it because of the sudden new fans and interest
- 14:59Speaker 2: because Kaylen Clark got on the league. Yeah, I bought
- 15:02Speaker 2: the WNBA league pass.
- 15:03Speaker 3: I'm not a fever fan.
- 15:05Speaker 2: You've never done that. No, So it's wild to watch
- 15:09Speaker 2: them kick themselves in the nuts over and over again.
- 15:13Speaker 2: So that's a weird thing she played, and man, she
- 15:16Speaker 2: was chunking balls. She nailed like three out of the
- 15:19Speaker 2: first four d three pointers really, and then she would
- 15:21Speaker 2: just go down to chunk, just chunk. She ended up
- 15:23Speaker 2: being like five or fifteen. She's just chunking. She scored
- 15:25Speaker 2: seventeen points for fifteen. Yeah, I like it, but they
- 15:29Speaker 2: were but it was all and there were there's no defense.
- 15:32Speaker 2: They just get the ball and shoot it. Yeah.
- 15:34Speaker 3: I mean that's like the NBA All Star Game.
- 15:36Speaker 2: Yeah, so's you bet on it? No, and they they won,
- 15:40Speaker 2: and she had the second highest points on our team.
- 15:44Speaker 2: But it's just so I don't know concerning that they
- 15:49Speaker 2: continue to try to stamp out the most marketable and
- 15:55Speaker 2: arguably important player in the league. I'm not even saying
- 15:57Speaker 2: the best age Wilson's probably the best.
- 16:00Speaker 3: I don't know who she is, but she has been
- 16:02Speaker 3: for a long time better if I sorry, I know
- 16:04Speaker 3: who she is.
- 16:05Speaker 2: But yeah, they don't. They just are like nat not
- 16:08Speaker 2: a girl. It's crazy.
- 16:11Speaker 4: Does your wife Caitlyn enjoy WNBA or is.
- 16:14Speaker 2: It just you me and Kaitlyn's grandpa? Nice and there's
- 16:18Speaker 2: no other sports on it.
- 16:19Speaker 3: But but but Caitlyn's grandpa though coached women's basketball.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Good point, right, that makes sense for like forty years,
- 16:26Speaker 2: so that's his sport. Mm hmm. I saw Obama talking
- 16:30Speaker 2: to Kaitlyn Clark. He was like a practice and he
- 16:34Speaker 2: like pulled her aside. He was like, don't let him
- 16:36Speaker 2: suck the joy out of this for you. He said that, Yes,
- 16:38Speaker 2: he was like, this is hard. Don't let him suck
- 16:40Speaker 2: the joy because she looks like she just hates it. Yeah,
- 16:43Speaker 2: even when they introduced her, she's like, hey, she does
- 16:45Speaker 2: look like that, and either she's beat down or she
- 16:47Speaker 2: has to present that she's beat down and not enjoying
- 16:49Speaker 2: it too much because she knows people are are are.
- 16:52Speaker 2: They're also using her as a divisive tool and she
- 16:56Speaker 2: doesn't want anything to do with it. Yeah. So yeah,
- 17:02Speaker 2: and she's top seven player probably in the WNBA right
- 17:06Speaker 2: now really currently. Yeah, I would think they raid her
- 17:09Speaker 2: number eleven guard, but they just hate her of course,
- 17:11Speaker 2: But I think she's the top seven player. She's not
- 17:14Speaker 2: the best player. But when Kareem Abdul Jabbar was saying,
- 17:16Speaker 2: she's not the face of the league, the face doesn't
- 17:18Speaker 2: mean you have to be the best. The face is
- 17:20Speaker 2: who people know the league for Lebron is still the
- 17:23Speaker 2: face of the NBA. Lebron is not the best player.
- 17:26Speaker 2: Lebron is still the face of it. Yeah he was.
- 17:27Speaker 2: But you don't have to be the best to be
- 17:29Speaker 2: the face. You need to be the person that most
- 17:30Speaker 2: people know. Ye to be the best, the person that
- 17:34Speaker 2: if someone goes, hey, do you watch the WNBA? Not really,
- 17:38Speaker 2: do you know any players? And like they name that
- 17:40Speaker 2: person that's the face of the league. Yeah, that's Caitlin Clark.
- 17:42Speaker 2: It's not who the diehards know, because the diehards are
- 17:46Speaker 2: going to know everybody. Who did you say Wilson? Yeah,
- 17:48Speaker 2: Agan Wilson best player by far. And I don't even
- 17:52Speaker 2: know her face.
- 17:54Speaker 4: I know Paige Beckers.
- 17:56Speaker 2: I know Paige Beckers. Yeah, yeah, she plays in Dallas.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Her Sabrina, her girlfriend won three point shootout.
- 18:03Speaker 6: Azy Fudd ac Fudd that's her name. Yeah, trying, dude,
- 18:08Speaker 6: any relation to Elmer Fudd?
- 18:10Speaker 2: No relation. But yeah, they we watched it. We did it.
- 18:18Speaker 2: It's fine.
- 18:18Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it's it's also helps too that there's
- 18:20Speaker 3: really not much else to watch right now for sure.
- 18:23Speaker 2: And also, man, when they missed, they miss bad big time.
- 18:27Speaker 2: Like they're missing open layups. That there's one girl that
- 18:30Speaker 2: dunked it and it was a pretty clean dunk. She
- 18:34Speaker 2: made it, Yeah, she made it, but you would have
- 18:36Speaker 2: thought how they reacted. She ripped the whole backboard down. Yeah, well,
- 18:41Speaker 2: because it's kind of like it's rare. You're right, rare,
- 18:44Speaker 2: you're right.
- 18:44Speaker 3: But man, the one I saw was the where four
- 18:46Speaker 3: people tried to put it back and everyone was missing.
- 18:51Speaker 2: Due it. That was funny.
- 18:53Speaker 3: And they kept throwing like outlet passes and then it
- 18:55Speaker 3: get picked off and then they throw another outlet pass.
- 19:00Speaker 2: They can shoot, but people are just funny, dude. No,
- 19:04Speaker 2: it's not that they can shoot. The ceiling of shooting
- 19:07Speaker 2: is good, but this the over athleticism. If you're comparing
- 19:09Speaker 2: it to men, it's not even close. Yeah. I think
- 19:13Speaker 2: have you seen like the I don't even know what.
- 19:17Speaker 2: I don't even know.
- 19:19Speaker 3: What.
- 19:20Speaker 2: Tell me, have I seen what? Like the women's soccer team?
- 19:25Speaker 3: You know we have really good women's soccer national soccer
- 19:28Speaker 3: Oh yeah, they really, We've won.
- 19:30Speaker 2: Four World Cup? Yeah? Do they dominate? They go and
- 19:32Speaker 2: play like the fifteen and under boy soccer teams to
- 19:34Speaker 2: get beat. Is that real? It happens all the time.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Oh no, I haven't seen I haven't seen this. Let
- 19:38Speaker 2: me get the that's core. Let me let me, let
- 19:42Speaker 2: me go to chat DVT. Hello, we're talking about the
- 19:47Speaker 2: US women's soccer team and how there have been instances
- 19:50Speaker 2: but they've they've played friendlies against like fifteen and under
- 19:53Speaker 2: boys soccer teams unlost. Can you give me details on
- 19:56Speaker 2: that checking.
- 20:01Speaker 1: The clearest example is from twenty seventeen. The US women's
- 20:05Speaker 1: national team did lose five to two in a closed
- 20:08Speaker 1: door training scrimmage against FC Dallas's under fifteen boys academy.
- 20:13Speaker 1: That result came out via an FC Dallas post, but
- 20:16Speaker 1: it wasn't an official match. Friendlies like that are often
- 20:20Speaker 1: used to test fitness and tactics and aren't a reflection
- 20:24Speaker 1: of competitive play. Carly Lloyd acknowledged the scrimmage laid as
- 20:28Speaker 1: well as the physical differences, but again, it wasn't a
- 20:32Speaker 1: sanctioned game.
- 20:34Speaker 3: Yeah, that's like when remember that documentary I talked about
- 20:38Speaker 3: where I think it was the college guys, the best
- 20:42Speaker 3: college players played the dream team in a closed door
- 20:45Speaker 3: scrimmage and they beat them, and no one ever wanted
- 20:48Speaker 3: to talk about it. And then finally the college team
- 20:50Speaker 3: is like, now we're going to talk about this because
- 20:52Speaker 3: it was the best day of our life where we
- 20:54Speaker 3: beat Michael Jordan and the Dream Team.
- 20:56Speaker 2: This is way different though. Wow, I know fifteen and
- 20:59Speaker 2: under in the fifteen you.
- 21:03Speaker 3: Hey, I love how Dallas FC two is just like
- 21:06Speaker 3: a tweet. It kill them like fourteen year old boys.
- 21:12Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, that's the thing. So it
- 21:18Speaker 2: was fun to watch. You can't compare. It's not fair
- 21:20Speaker 2: to compare. It's not it's not fair. But yeah, that
- 21:24Speaker 2: was the highlight clip. Dude. I laughed. It starts with
- 21:27Speaker 2: that three pointer on the bottom corner.
- 21:30Speaker 3: I laughed because it started with like highlights from the
- 21:33Speaker 3: All Star Game, Like, oh cool, let me watch this
- 21:35Speaker 3: because I really thought it was gonna be the highlights,
- 21:38Speaker 3: but it wasn't.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Yeah, let's break, We'll come back and talk to Jason Garrett.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Let's go former Cowboys coach. Now, he's got a podcast
- 21:48Speaker 2: called Coach to Coach. You're gonna let me ask a
- 21:50Speaker 2: few questions. You can lead us off here. Jason Garrett
- 21:52Speaker 2: coming up. All right on Jason Garrett, former Dallas Cowboys
- 22:02Speaker 2: head coach, NBC sports analyst, also got a brand new podcast.
- 22:05Speaker 2: We're gonna talk about it. Called coach to coach, But Jason,
- 22:08Speaker 2: this is a thrilling day for one of the guys
- 22:10Speaker 2: on the show because he is a die hard Cowboys
- 22:13Speaker 2: fan and he was talking I won't say smack, but
- 22:18Speaker 2: he was just so curious about you going to the Giants.
- 22:20Speaker 2: So I'm gonna put him on over here. This is Eddie. Eddie,
- 22:23Speaker 2: go ahead, Hey, Coach, how's it going? So good to
- 22:25Speaker 2: meet you, Eddie.
- 22:27Speaker 5: What's happening?
- 22:28Speaker 3: I first have a question, so should we care about rivalries?
- 22:31Speaker 3: Because I hate the Commanders, I hate the Eagles, and
- 22:35Speaker 3: I hate the Giants, Coach, and when you went to
- 22:37Speaker 3: go coach for the Giants, I felt betrayed. So should
- 22:41Speaker 3: we care about rivalries?
- 22:44Speaker 5: Oh? Sure, absolutely. You know I went and played for
- 22:48Speaker 5: the Giants too, so I had some history. Yeah, I
- 22:52Speaker 5: had some history in that organization. But yeah, rivalries are important.
- 22:56Speaker 5: You know, you think about the Cowboys and all the
- 22:59Speaker 5: way back to this seventies with the Redskins, and then
- 23:02Speaker 5: you know, we had great rival rivalries with you know,
- 23:05Speaker 5: all of them, with with certainly the Redskins slash Commanders,
- 23:09Speaker 5: but then the Eagles and the Eagles was always a
- 23:12Speaker 5: blood bath. And then and then certainly the Giants through
- 23:15Speaker 5: the years. So I think it's what makes sports great.
- 23:18Speaker 5: I really do.
- 23:19Speaker 3: But then, how do you go from being a Cowboys guy?
- 23:22Speaker 3: I mean you you were our guy coach and then
- 23:24Speaker 3: you go coach for the enemy?
- 23:27Speaker 5: Well, I was. It was a tricky decision, and uh,
- 23:31Speaker 5: you know it just you have different opportunities at different times,
- 23:34Speaker 5: and and that seemed like a good one at the time.
- 23:36Speaker 5: But you know, I was in the Cowboy organization for
- 23:40Speaker 5: a long time as a player and a coach. So
- 23:42Speaker 5: I still live in Dallas, so so much of my
- 23:45Speaker 5: life has been a part of that organization and grateful
- 23:47Speaker 5: for those times.
- 23:48Speaker 3: I do want to ask you, coach, about being a player?
- 23:50Speaker 3: What was it like throw into Michael Irvin? What kind
- 23:53Speaker 3: of receiver was? What was Michael remarkable?
- 23:57Speaker 5: Remarkable player? I could talk for three hours on Mylervin
- 24:01Speaker 5: an incredible teammate, arguably the best teammate any of us.
- 24:05Speaker 5: Had a tremendous work ethic, intensity, passion for the game.
- 24:10Speaker 5: The way he practiced every day is certainly the way
- 24:12Speaker 5: he played on Sundays off the charts and was one
- 24:17Speaker 5: of those guys as a leader and a marquee player
- 24:19Speaker 5: on the team. He knew everybody on the team and
- 24:22Speaker 5: went out of his way to support people really throughout
- 24:26Speaker 5: his career and since then. And he's a great friend
- 24:30Speaker 5: of mine. Amazing receiver. You know, he was one of
- 24:32Speaker 5: those guys who loved the ball, so he was always
- 24:35Speaker 5: I would get a chance to go play as a
- 24:37Speaker 5: backup quarterback, he said, Hey, just throw it in my area.
- 24:39Speaker 5: I'll go get the ball. And one thing that I
- 24:42Speaker 5: would say about him is, you know, bad things rarely
- 24:46Speaker 5: happen when you threw the ball to Michael Irvin. Usually
- 24:49Speaker 5: he made a lot of big plays for you. And
- 24:51Speaker 5: he's certainly never let the defender make a player in
- 24:55Speaker 5: the ball. He just had this amazing body control, tremendous
- 24:58Speaker 5: passion competitive this to go get the ball. And you know,
- 25:02Speaker 5: if you go back and look at the film of
- 25:04Speaker 5: him and Troy ape been playing together, you know there
- 25:07Speaker 5: was so much trust between those guys. You know, Michael
- 25:10Speaker 5: would run an eighteen yard incut, the ball would be
- 25:13Speaker 5: halfway there before Michael came out of his break because
- 25:16Speaker 5: Troy knew exactly where it was going to be, and
- 25:18Speaker 5: like I said, such a big target, nothing bad ever happened.
- 25:22Speaker 5: An amazing guy. But I'll give you a quick Michael's story.
- 25:25Speaker 5: Just the kind of teammate and friend he is. We
- 25:28Speaker 5: opened up a restaurant in Dallas about three and a
- 25:30Speaker 5: half months ago, and we had some opening cocktail parties
- 25:34Speaker 5: and so there were I think it was Thursday, Friday,
- 25:37Speaker 5: and Saturday night and it was about eight thirty on
- 25:41Speaker 5: Friday night and the cocktail parties went from six to nine.
- 25:45Speaker 5: And he texted me and said, Hey, Red, what's going
- 25:48Speaker 5: on here? What is this? He said, Yeah, We're open
- 25:49Speaker 5: up the restaurant cocktail party tonight and tomorrow and love
- 25:53Speaker 5: to have you come by. Ites Like, I'm going out
- 25:54Speaker 5: of town first thing in the morning. How long you
- 25:56Speaker 5: going till tonight? I said, We're going as long as
- 25:58Speaker 5: we need to go, and shirre it off. He showed
- 26:01Speaker 5: up and with the life of the party. But just
- 26:03Speaker 5: that kind of a guy, that kind of a friend
- 26:05Speaker 5: and teammate to this day.
- 26:07Speaker 3: Was it easy for you guys to get a spot,
- 26:11Speaker 3: you know, at a restaurant?
- 26:12Speaker 2: Was it?
- 26:13Speaker 3: Did you ever pay for your dinner in Dallas?
- 26:15Speaker 5: Like?
- 26:15Speaker 2: What was it? Like? Beans is at the top of
- 26:17Speaker 2: the world back then?
- 26:18Speaker 3: I mean I saw the documentary Coach it seemed like
- 26:21Speaker 3: a crazy time for you guys.
- 26:22Speaker 5: Yeah, it was a crazy time, but an amazing time,
- 26:25Speaker 5: and if you reflect on it, you know, it's probably
- 26:28Speaker 5: one of the four or five best teams in the
- 26:30Speaker 5: history of the National Football League. If you go back
- 26:33Speaker 5: to go by decade, go go back to Green Bay
- 26:35Speaker 5: in the sixties, and the Steelers of the seventies, the
- 26:39Speaker 5: you know, the Niners of the eighties, the Cowboys of
- 26:41Speaker 5: the nineties, and then the Patriots since then, and there's
- 26:44Speaker 5: certainly some other teams. The Dolphins had amazing teams. Obviously
- 26:47Speaker 5: the team that went undefeated, but if you think about
- 26:50Speaker 5: a time to win three Super Bowls in four years,
- 26:53Speaker 5: and in the year that we didn't win, you know,
- 26:55Speaker 5: we lost in the NFC Championship Game to San Francisco.
- 26:59Speaker 5: Amazing arrow of football and great coaching and some obviously
- 27:04Speaker 5: great Hall of Fame players, and people love football in
- 27:08Speaker 5: Texas As, you know, so when the Cowboys are winning
- 27:11Speaker 5: Super Bowls like that, it's an amazing experience to be
- 27:15Speaker 5: part of it. And we had so many incredible personalities too.
- 27:18Speaker 5: I mean, if you think about a Troy Aikman, but
- 27:21Speaker 5: you know, you mentioned Michael Ervin Emitt Smith, Charles Haley,
- 27:24Speaker 5: then Dion Sanders shows up and so many more. So
- 27:28Speaker 5: a real cast of characters, you know, I think Daryl
- 27:31Speaker 5: Johnston says it best though. You know, we had a
- 27:33Speaker 5: lot of characters on that team. But it was a
- 27:36Speaker 5: self regulating team. You know. The players really kept each
- 27:40Speaker 5: other in line, held each other accountable, and I think
- 27:44Speaker 5: that was a big reason for the success. But certainly
- 27:46Speaker 5: were fun times in Dallas for all of us and
- 27:50Speaker 5: fortunate to be a part of that experience.
- 27:52Speaker 2: When you're the coach and you have a team that
- 27:55Speaker 2: is veteran led, like the one you're talking about there,
- 27:58Speaker 2: is it so different than when it's not veteran led
- 28:01Speaker 2: and the organizations that you ran. Did you have a
- 28:04Speaker 2: team where you had to be more of a coach
- 28:06Speaker 2: than other times?
- 28:08Speaker 5: Well, no doubt. Sometimes you have a younger team and
- 28:11Speaker 5: you have teams, you have teams where you're really trying
- 28:13Speaker 5: to empower the guys to take charge and take ownership
- 28:18Speaker 5: of the team and understand that it's their team and
- 28:20Speaker 5: their time and it's time for them to make their mark.
- 28:23Speaker 5: And you know, the expression we always used to use is,
- 28:26Speaker 5: you know, good teams have a head coach who hold
- 28:28Speaker 5: everybody accountable. But the great teams, the championship teams have
- 28:32Speaker 5: a head, coach, coaches, staff members, captains, leaders, and everybody
- 28:37Speaker 5: who hold themselves and each other accountable of the standards.
- 28:40Speaker 5: And those Championship Ship teams in the nineties certainly did that,
- 28:45Speaker 5: and it's something we always aspired to. But sometimes when
- 28:48Speaker 5: you have a younger team, you have to almost give
- 28:50Speaker 5: the guys permission to take over, take charge. And we
- 28:55Speaker 5: certainly were fortunate when I was coaching to have some
- 28:57Speaker 5: amazing leaders as well. When you think about you know,
- 29:00Speaker 5: Jason Whitten, and you know Zach Martin and Sean Leleey
- 29:05Speaker 5: and all these guys. You know, Tony Romo, Dak Prescott,
- 29:08Speaker 5: I can go on and on and on with the guys.
- 29:10Speaker 5: So we certainly got to that point. But again, allowing
- 29:14Speaker 5: those guys to take charge, empowering them, giving them opportunities
- 29:18Speaker 5: to do that. I think that's critical for any championship team.
- 29:22Speaker 2: In episode one of your new show, Coach to Coach,
- 29:24Speaker 2: I saw you had coach Doungee on and have a
- 29:26Speaker 2: couple experience with Coach Dungee and just such a kind guy.
- 29:31Speaker 2: I don't know if your experience with him as a
- 29:33Speaker 2: peer is the same. But not only was he so
- 29:36Speaker 2: kind to me in both times that we spent any
- 29:39Speaker 2: time together. How does a guy like that, like, how
- 29:42Speaker 2: does he crack the whip as a head coach at
- 29:44Speaker 2: the same time as just being like an awesome human.
- 29:46Speaker 5: Yeah, he's greatness, He really is. He's one of the
- 29:49Speaker 5: best people I've ever met in my life. And you know,
- 29:52Speaker 5: he's lived his life a certain way, and I think
- 29:55Speaker 5: anybody who's ever been around him just simply respects him
- 29:58Speaker 5: as a guy first and forem most. And then you know,
- 30:01Speaker 5: he was an amazing player in college at the University
- 30:04Speaker 5: of Minnesota, then goes to the Steelers and is part
- 30:06Speaker 5: of some Super Bowl teams again, you know, some of
- 30:09Speaker 5: the best teams ever assembled. He was part of that,
- 30:12Speaker 5: and then coached for a long time there and then
- 30:14Speaker 5: in other spots. So I just I just think he
- 30:16Speaker 5: had so much credibility and when he spoke, his his
- 30:20Speaker 5: his coaches and his players listened and they respected what
- 30:25Speaker 5: he said. He's not a frivolous guy in any way,
- 30:28Speaker 5: and he's just someone who who I think has set
- 30:32Speaker 5: the standard in so many ways for how to behave
- 30:35Speaker 5: in the leadership role and certainly as a head coach,
- 30:37Speaker 5: and his success did not happen by accident. You know,
- 30:41Speaker 5: every so often he'll tell a story about how he
- 30:43Speaker 5: got mad at at the team, or he got mad
- 30:46Speaker 5: at somebody and raised his voice. He told one of
- 30:48Speaker 5: those stories in our podcast together, and you know, the
- 30:53Speaker 5: level of him raising his voice is not that high,
- 30:56Speaker 5: but that just the way he did it. And anybody
- 30:58Speaker 5: who was around him as a coach or as a player,
- 31:01Speaker 5: he just commanded their respect. And you know, UH did
- 31:05Speaker 5: it as well as anybody. And I was so fortunate
- 31:07Speaker 5: when I went to NBC. He was so generous with me,
- 31:11Speaker 5: you know, first getting into TV. I mean, I can't
- 31:14Speaker 5: tell you the time he spent with me, showing me
- 31:16Speaker 5: different things, sharing different bits of wisdom that he learned
- 31:19Speaker 5: along the way. And he just an amazing guy. I'm
- 31:22Speaker 5: fortunate to call him a friend.
- 31:23Speaker 2: So in your episode, do you guys talk football or
- 31:26Speaker 2: leadership or both?
- 31:28Speaker 5: You know, I think the big thing for us is
- 31:30Speaker 5: you talk about leadership and team building and a lot
- 31:33Speaker 5: of people using this word culture so much lately. You know,
- 31:36Speaker 5: the environment that you create when you're in those roles,
- 31:39Speaker 5: and you know, I learned a long time ago that
- 31:41Speaker 5: telling stories is something that probably resonates more with the audience.
- 31:46Speaker 5: You know, I used to tell stories as a head
- 31:48Speaker 5: coach to try to make a point to our team.
- 31:51Speaker 5: And so what we try to do is is tell
- 31:53Speaker 5: some stories about experiences that these guys have had and
- 31:57Speaker 5: really the lessons that they've learned. And it's not about
- 32:00Speaker 5: yesterday's game, this year's team, any of that stuff. It's
- 32:04Speaker 5: more about their experiences head coach, when you went to
- 32:07Speaker 5: Tampa in ninety six, you know, and you had a
- 32:10Speaker 5: vision for the team, Where's that vision come from? And
- 32:13Speaker 5: he goes into all the different influences that he's had
- 32:16Speaker 5: and relates stories and again lessons that he learned along
- 32:19Speaker 5: the way. And the thing that I'm most excited about
- 32:22Speaker 5: is I think it applies to I know it applies
- 32:24Speaker 5: to people who are in roles. If you're a head
- 32:26Speaker 5: football coach, you're you're a head coach, and any sports arena,
- 32:32Speaker 5: you know, this is invaluable stuff. But I think you know,
- 32:35Speaker 5: if you're a leader, if you're trying to build a
- 32:37Speaker 5: team in any walk of life, I think there are
- 32:39Speaker 5: some amazing bits of wisdom that you can learn. You
- 32:42Speaker 5: know from Coach Dungee and the other guests we've had
- 32:44Speaker 5: on so really fun for me. I learned so much
- 32:46Speaker 5: talking to these guys.
- 32:48Speaker 2: If you're a coach and you are extremely personable and liked,
- 32:51Speaker 2: do you need a guy on staff that's kind of
- 32:53Speaker 2: the headhunter? And then opposite, if you're hardcore, do you
- 32:56Speaker 2: need like a player assistant that can be the guy
- 32:59Speaker 2: that they like into when need to hug oh.
- 33:01Speaker 5: I always thought it was so important to build a
- 33:04Speaker 5: staff that had a lot of different personalities on it.
- 33:07Speaker 5: I always thought, you know, have young guys, have older guys,
- 33:11Speaker 5: have loud guys, have quiet guys, white guys, black guys,
- 33:15Speaker 5: green guys, blue guys, you know, whatever background origin that
- 33:19Speaker 5: you can have to be able to relate to players
- 33:22Speaker 5: different ways. The worst thing you can do is build
- 33:25Speaker 5: a staff that's identical to who you are. I think
- 33:28Speaker 5: you want to be able to interact with players a
- 33:30Speaker 5: lot of different ways, and everybody kind of plays off
- 33:33Speaker 5: of each other. So I think that's a really important
- 33:36Speaker 5: important part of it. And you want everybody to be themselves.
- 33:39Speaker 5: You know, authenticity is so important, so I think that's
- 33:42Speaker 5: a big piece of this thing too. So I think
- 33:45Speaker 5: you have to be really thoughtful while you put the
- 33:47Speaker 5: staff together. Having a combination of personalities and backgrounds. I
- 33:51Speaker 5: think that's what works best in connecting with the team.
- 33:54Speaker 2: One of my closest friends is Matt Castle, who played
- 33:57Speaker 2: for the Cowboys for a while, and him talk and
- 34:00Speaker 2: he says there was a point in his career where
- 34:02Speaker 2: he then in his mind he was the backup quarterback
- 34:05Speaker 2: and he needed to be great for the room, meaning
- 34:07Speaker 2: the quarterback room, because he started, he got injured. Then
- 34:10Speaker 2: he was just moving around being the backup at a
- 34:12Speaker 2: lot of different places. When you're backing up, are you
- 34:16Speaker 2: always trying to get the head job or when did
- 34:18Speaker 2: you decide I'm just going to be a great backup.
- 34:21Speaker 5: Well, I can relate to what Matt's talking about because
- 34:23Speaker 5: I was a backup for fourteen years, and you know,
- 34:26Speaker 5: first and foremost, I wanted to be a great teammate.
- 34:29Speaker 5: I wanted to be someone who supported the starting quarterback
- 34:32Speaker 5: because you know, when I was in college, I was
- 34:33Speaker 5: very fortunate. One of my best friends in the world
- 34:36Speaker 5: is Brian Baron. He's actually the president of the Cleveland
- 34:39Speaker 5: Guardians now. He was our backup quarterback and just an
- 34:42Speaker 5: amazing friend and amazing support system for me, and I
- 34:46Speaker 5: just appreciated that so much. And I tried to do
- 34:49Speaker 5: that for my time in Dallas with Troy and Wade
- 34:52Speaker 5: Wilson and Rodney Pete and the other guys you know,
- 34:55Speaker 5: for eight years, and then certainly in New York with
- 34:57Speaker 5: Kerry Collins, in Tampa with bradja whoever I was around,
- 35:01Speaker 5: so I just knew how important it was. It's a
- 35:04Speaker 5: hard job to be a starting quarterback in the NFL,
- 35:07Speaker 5: and the last thing you want is to go back
- 35:09Speaker 5: into that quarterback room and have some guy who's kind
- 35:12Speaker 5: of sniping you from behind, and you want I was
- 35:15Speaker 5: all in. I wanted so badly for our starting quarterbacks
- 35:18Speaker 5: to play great and do whatever I could to help
- 35:20Speaker 5: those guys. So that doesn't that's not independent of saying
- 35:25Speaker 5: I have aspirations too to be a starting quarterback. The
- 35:29Speaker 5: biggest thing for me was just be ready when your
- 35:30Speaker 5: opportunity presents itself, and that's always what I tried to do,
- 35:34Speaker 5: and take advantage of that and see where that takes you.
- 35:36Speaker 2: Are the Cowboys gonna be good this year?
- 35:39Speaker 5: I think they are going to be good. I do
- 35:42Speaker 5: you know, I think you have to remember where they
- 35:44Speaker 5: came from.
- 35:45Speaker 2: UH.
- 35:45Speaker 5: Last year they were there were they won seven games,
- 35:48Speaker 5: and if you look at the teams they beat, UH,
- 35:50Speaker 5: they really weren't very good. They beat the Commanders twice,
- 35:53Speaker 5: they beat the Giants, the Jets, the Raiders, you know,
- 35:56Speaker 5: teams that weren't real good. They lost to Arizona. Kansas City,
- 36:01Speaker 5: who they beat, had a down year. They did have
- 36:03Speaker 5: a great win against Philadelphia, obviously, but you know in
- 36:07Speaker 5: games where they needed to compete against teams that were
- 36:11Speaker 5: where they were or better than them, they kind of
- 36:14Speaker 5: went away. And I think the easy explanation for that is,
- 36:17Speaker 5: you know, the defense wasn't very good, offense was great,
- 36:20Speaker 5: defense was terrible, and certainly the Micah Parsons situation hung
- 36:24Speaker 5: over their team. And they're in a much better place
- 36:26Speaker 5: now replacing him with some veteran guys. If you think
- 36:30Speaker 5: about Quinn Williams and Rashan Gary and Kenny Clark, veteran
- 36:34Speaker 5: guys who've established themselves in this league. They have some
- 36:38Speaker 5: young guys. The Caleb down selection I think is excellent.
- 36:41Speaker 5: Malachi Lawrence looks like he has a chance to be
- 36:43Speaker 5: a big time rusher. So they're really putting some pieces
- 36:47Speaker 5: together on that side of the ball, and offensively, they
- 36:50Speaker 5: got a ton of They got a ton of talent.
- 36:52Speaker 5: The receivers are off the charts. Dax to me is
- 36:55Speaker 5: the top five quarterback plays as well as anybody in
- 36:58Speaker 5: the league offensive line. Three first round picks, so there's
- 37:01Speaker 5: a lot of there's a lot of resources there and
- 37:04Speaker 5: I think they're set up to have a lot of success.
- 37:06Speaker 5: The big thing for me is did they dig in
- 37:09Speaker 5: and compete and fight and scratch and claw. They didn't
- 37:12Speaker 5: do that well enough last year, and I think that's
- 37:14Speaker 5: the next step for them.
- 37:15Speaker 2: Mahomes is able to go in camp, but what does
- 37:19Speaker 2: that actually mean for him coming up that injury.
- 37:22Speaker 5: You know, I don't know. I'm not there, you know,
- 37:25Speaker 5: I did see that news, and I think the biggest
- 37:28Speaker 5: thing that I learned with injuries is you just have
- 37:30Speaker 5: to make sure that you don't rush guys back, and
- 37:33Speaker 5: sometimes you have to protect them from themselves because you know,
- 37:36Speaker 5: nobody wants to play more than Patrick Mahomes, I mean,
- 37:39Speaker 5: the ultimate competitors. So he's dying and he's trying to
- 37:42Speaker 5: convince everybody in that building, I'm ready, I'm ready, I'm ready,
- 37:45Speaker 5: and those guys are professional enough to know that, hey,
- 37:48Speaker 5: we're going to decide when you're ready. But but you know,
- 37:52Speaker 5: airing on the side of caution and being deliberate and
- 37:55Speaker 5: patient with that, I think is really smart. It's a
- 37:58Speaker 5: long season, going to play the Super Bowl until February
- 38:01Speaker 5: thirteenth of twenty twenty seven, so there's there's a lot
- 38:05Speaker 5: of time between now and then. So you know, my
- 38:07Speaker 5: hope is that he takes his time, really make sure
- 38:10Speaker 5: that he's ready to go before he gets back out there.
- 38:12Speaker 5: But I know he's chopping of the bit, and you know,
- 38:15Speaker 5: I think I think as an organization, they're chopping at
- 38:18Speaker 5: the bit to come back from the kind of year
- 38:19Speaker 5: they had last year.
- 38:21Speaker 2: My final question, you have Joe Girardi coming up on
- 38:24Speaker 2: your show, and I grew up a massive Cubs fan.
- 38:26Speaker 2: So he was a catcher for the Cubs with Damon
- 38:27Speaker 2: Barry Hill way back in the day, and then he
- 38:29Speaker 2: went to the Yankees. Obviously he coached the Yankees. But
- 38:32Speaker 2: what do you think the through line is of players
- 38:34Speaker 2: who become really good coacher managers.
- 38:37Speaker 5: It's a great question. You know a lot of people
- 38:40Speaker 5: say that, you know, you know, it's harder for great
- 38:42Speaker 5: players to be great coaches or managers, because sometimes things
- 38:48Speaker 5: happen so easily for them. You know, the great Ted
- 38:51Speaker 5: Williams line, see the ball, hit the ball, and you
- 38:54Speaker 5: know a lot of times those great players just say
- 38:57Speaker 5: go do it, you know, and it was easy for
- 38:59Speaker 5: them to just go do it, and maybe a lesser player,
- 39:02Speaker 5: backup player, had to had to learn all the tricks
- 39:05Speaker 5: to the trade to get himself even to a point
- 39:08Speaker 5: where he survives. And maybe that lends itself to being
- 39:11Speaker 5: a better coach as they go forward. But I don't
- 39:13Speaker 5: know that there's any particular you know, formula or through line,
- 39:18Speaker 5: like you said that that connects it all. But I
- 39:21Speaker 5: do know that when you're a backup player, sometimes you're
- 39:24Speaker 5: observing a little bit more and you're seeing what makes
- 39:26Speaker 5: a team great and what makes a player great, and
- 39:30Speaker 5: you're learning the different techniques and these are the things
- 39:33Speaker 5: you need to do to survive, and sometimes that certainly
- 39:36Speaker 5: benefits you going forward, you know. Visiting with Joe he
- 39:39Speaker 5: was phenomenal. I just you know, he's a good friend
- 39:42Speaker 5: of mine, and we could have talked for four hours
- 39:45Speaker 5: because he's such a good guy, and he related some
- 39:48Speaker 5: of his experiences being around those great Yankee teams as
- 39:51Speaker 5: a player in the nineties and what made those teams great,
- 39:54Speaker 5: and then some of the lessons he learned that he
- 39:57Speaker 5: tried to apply as a manager himself when they won
- 39:59Speaker 5: the World Series. And he's so articulate. He represents all
- 40:04Speaker 5: things that are good to me in life. He's a
- 40:07Speaker 5: great family man, but you know, just his passion for
- 40:11Speaker 5: the game and doing things the right way, it all
- 40:13Speaker 5: comes through. And he was such a fun guy to
- 40:15Speaker 5: talk to.
- 40:16Speaker 2: Some of the guests Coach has on a show coming
- 40:18Speaker 2: up Coach to Coach, Andy Reid, Sean Payton, Joe Madden,
- 40:21Speaker 2: who's massive for me again being a Cubs fan, like
- 40:24Speaker 2: that was it twenty sixteen? That was like the Holy Grail.
- 40:28Speaker 5: He's freaking greatness again. I keep saying this, but I
- 40:32Speaker 5: could have talked to him for four hours. And he's
- 40:35Speaker 5: such a funny, interesting guy. He's got a great perspective
- 40:38Speaker 5: on life, and he tells some great stories about that
- 40:41Speaker 5: run in twenty sixteen and the different decisions he had
- 40:44Speaker 5: to make. So so much fun having him on as well.
- 40:47Speaker 2: Guys, check out Coach to Coach on YouTube or Spotify,
- 40:50Speaker 2: Apple Podcasts, wherever you get your podcast coach, really appreciate
- 40:53Speaker 2: the time. I hope the podcast gets you everything you
- 40:55Speaker 2: want out of it, and you know, hopefully we'll see
- 40:57Speaker 2: you back on the sidelines. What's up with that when
- 40:59Speaker 2: you can come ack or what, Well, we'll see.
- 41:03Speaker 5: I'm just living it each day and enjoying what I'm
- 41:05Speaker 5: doing at NBC right now and excited. I don't know
- 41:08Speaker 5: if you know, we're gonna travel the games each week
- 41:11Speaker 5: this year, so you know, Maria Taylor and Devin mccordy,
- 41:15Speaker 5: Mike Tomlin and I will be on the sidelines each week.
- 41:19Speaker 5: So excited about that. I'm doing the Notre Dame Games,
- 41:21Speaker 5: so fun stuff ahead of NBC. But you know, I
- 41:25Speaker 5: just take it one day at a time and try
- 41:26Speaker 5: to brace the moment.
- 41:27Speaker 2: Coach, thank you for your time. Good luck with that
- 41:29Speaker 2: with the show, and hopefully we'll talk to you soon.
- 41:31Speaker 5: Yeah, I look forward to it. Thanks man, Thanks coach.
- 41:39Speaker 2: Okay, before we go, I heard kick off Kevin, who's
- 41:42Speaker 2: not here today. He's on vacation. Yeah, I heard he
- 41:45Speaker 2: got out of the Bobby Owned show group chat. He did.
- 41:48Speaker 2: What happened? I don't know.
- 41:49Speaker 3: He just we were talking about some stuff or sending
- 41:52Speaker 3: pictures to each other to post, like, hey, do you
- 41:54Speaker 3: have any pictures of you guys doing something on the weekend.
- 41:56Speaker 3: We're gonna post that cool and that of nowhere, Kevin
- 41:58Speaker 3: just says, I don't think you guys me in this chat,
- 42:00Speaker 3: so I'm just gonna let myself out. And we were
- 42:04Speaker 3: like what, And before we can even like respond to him,
- 42:07Speaker 3: it said, Kevin has.
- 42:09Speaker 2: Left the conversation. What do you think happened?
- 42:12Speaker 3: I think maybe he has just seen too much conversing
- 42:17Speaker 3: about stuff that doesn't pertain to him, and he's just like,
- 42:21Speaker 3: I really can do without all the buzzing my phone
- 42:24Speaker 3: buzzing over and over over stuff that I really don't
- 42:26Speaker 3: care about and it doesn't concern me.
- 42:29Speaker 2: But does it ever concern him in that chat? I'm
- 42:31Speaker 2: not in nice.
- 42:32Speaker 3: Sometimes yeah, sometimes like hey, we're all going to do
- 42:34Speaker 3: this and he's part of it, you know, is everyone
- 42:37Speaker 3: that works.
- 42:37Speaker 2: For the show. But he just saw himself out. I
- 42:41Speaker 2: thought that was interesting. Who told you, Amy? Yeah? And
- 42:45Speaker 2: then he was not here today on the show. So
- 42:47Speaker 2: because it's on vacation.
- 42:48Speaker 7: Well, the crazy thing is he used it a week
- 42:49Speaker 7: before to find crutches.
- 42:51Speaker 3: You're right, Mike.
- 42:52Speaker 2: Here's the chat Mike, what do you think happened?
- 42:56Speaker 7: I guess he got annoyed by the buzzing. But even then,
- 42:58Speaker 7: just silence it. Notifications.
- 43:00Speaker 2: Oh, I just ignore, like I ignore you guys all
- 43:02Speaker 2: the time. I have been in group chats that I
- 43:06Speaker 2: just mute the notifications, or if I look at my phone,
- 43:09Speaker 2: it's there, but it doesn't pop up as a notification.
- 43:11Speaker 2: You can just mute it. That's a that's an idea.
- 43:14Speaker 2: It'll show up as a red number, but it doesn't
- 43:15Speaker 2: buzz or actually even pop up on my screen. But
- 43:18Speaker 2: if I go to see if I have any mistext
- 43:20Speaker 2: or any text at all, it'll be part of the numbers.
- 43:22Speaker 2: But I'm not in any group anymore. Yeah, you're in
- 43:25Speaker 2: the doulas. I guess it's not football season so called
- 43:29Speaker 2: latinos for Cowboys. I don't know. We've changed it a
- 43:30Speaker 2: few times.
- 43:33Speaker 7: What are you saying, Mike, No, it just feels weird
- 43:35Speaker 7: to me, like very definitive to leave the conversation, dude
- 43:38Speaker 7: out of nowhere.
- 43:39Speaker 3: You're right, and it's weird because you feel like it.
- 43:42Speaker 3: That's a big step to let everyone know you're leaving, like, hey, guys,
- 43:47Speaker 3: And then it says it like Kevin has left the conversation.
- 43:50Speaker 2: What if he would have just left? But that is
- 43:53Speaker 2: that better or worse? I would say it's worse.
- 43:57Speaker 3: I would say it's worse if it just said like him,
- 44:00Speaker 3: have left the conversation.
- 44:00Speaker 2: So what did you say before his hurrah? Because that
- 44:03Speaker 2: matters too. If he said something like, Hey, I'm going
- 44:07Speaker 2: on vacation for a week and a lot of this
- 44:09Speaker 2: is stuff that doesn't pertain to my job. I'm gonna
- 44:12Speaker 2: hop out of this, Okay, I don't feel so weird
- 44:14Speaker 2: about that. I'm gonna readbat them.
- 44:15Speaker 7: Yeah, go ahead, he says, I'm gonna bounce out of
- 44:17Speaker 7: this chat. Please hit me up on the side for
- 44:19Speaker 7: any show stuff if needed.
- 44:20Speaker 2: Thanks. Whoa.
- 44:22Speaker 3: It sounds like years and years of like putting up
- 44:25Speaker 3: with crap like what, we haven't talked about anything crazy
- 44:28Speaker 3: on there?
- 44:28Speaker 2: Just like use it that often? No, we really don't.
- 44:31Speaker 2: And that's funny.
- 44:32Speaker 3: Mike said he did use it for his own advantage
- 44:35Speaker 3: the last time he brought.
- 44:36Speaker 2: Him because of the group chat. You know you can
- 44:39Speaker 2: put them back in. You can, yeah, oh you gotta
- 44:41Speaker 2: use at him. We're gonna do that then, Like you
- 44:43Speaker 2: can get on your phone right now and out of fasts.
- 44:46Speaker 2: He will not even know he's back in until it
- 44:48Speaker 2: starts blowing up his phone again. Because you can add
- 44:51Speaker 2: someone easily.
- 44:52Speaker 3: That's funny. Yeah, who knows. That was weird for sure.
- 44:56Speaker 2: A three person one, though, you can't get out of Okay,
- 45:00Speaker 2: you must like to die, you can't. I don't think
- 45:02Speaker 2: you can remove your stuff from a three person group chat.
- 45:04Speaker 2: But you guys have a big one though.
- 45:06Speaker 3: And does it have to be the person that opened
- 45:08Speaker 3: it up or the person that started the group chat?
- 45:09Speaker 2: I think you can do it right now. You could
- 45:11Speaker 2: go into that and there's an ad to group chat.
- 45:14Speaker 2: You can just add Kevin. I can like it never happened.
- 45:17Speaker 6: You're back, buddy, and Mike you can just say you
- 45:21Speaker 6: remember those crutches.
- 45:22Speaker 2: That's see, I see it.
- 45:24Speaker 8: Kevin, he's back back. There we go, he's back, Mike.
- 45:30Speaker 8: Do you see he's back? Say, Kevin's re entered. Eddie added,
- 45:37Speaker 8: that is genius.
- 45:38Speaker 2: We need to talk about this. We're not done. You
- 45:41Speaker 2: can't just leave. Don't you walk out on me, dude.
- 45:48Speaker 2: That's funny. Thank you. Yeah, that's good stuff. That's funny.
- 45:52Speaker 2: All right, we're done thanks to Jason Garrett coming on
- 45:58Speaker 2: I hope you guys have a great rest of the week.
- 46:00Speaker 2: We'll catch up soon, all right, Eddie blow it? All right,
- 46:03Speaker 2: see you guys. Theme song written by Bobby Bones That's
