Transcript
- 0:21Speaker 1: Hey everyone, Emily A Baddi here. You are listening to
- 0:25Speaker 1: five minute Friday from Hurdle. Wow. Firstly, I can't believe
- 0:31Speaker 1: that this episode marks the end of season fifteen. It
- 0:34Speaker 1: feels like this really really breathed by. And also that
- 0:39Speaker 1: this is the last episode in year five of Hurdle.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Hurdle's birthday is on December thirty first, and come January first,
- 0:48Speaker 1: we are relaunching the show. You're going to see new
- 0:51Speaker 1: cover art in your podcast feed wherever you get your podcasts.
- 0:55Speaker 1: You're going to see a completely new look. Over on social,
- 0:59Speaker 1: we are going to be completely reinvigorating the not so
- 1:03Speaker 1: Secret Hurdler's Facebook group. So if you're not in there
- 1:06Speaker 1: just yet, click on over to the show notes and
- 1:09Speaker 1: join us over there. There's gonna be a lot of
- 1:11Speaker 1: fun things to come. And yeah, I'm just I'm a
- 1:15Speaker 1: really big fan of fresh starts, and I am also
- 1:19Speaker 1: of the mindset that every single second is the opportunity
- 1:22Speaker 1: to begin again. We don't necessarily need January one to
- 1:27Speaker 1: be a symbol for change. However, with that said, I
- 1:31Speaker 1: love me a January one. I love the turning of
- 1:34Speaker 1: a new year. I love evaluating where I'm at I
- 1:36Speaker 1: love fresh beginnings, and so it is coming not just
- 1:41Speaker 1: for all of us, so to speak, with the turn
- 1:45Speaker 1: into twenty twenty four, but also for hurdle. On that note,
- 1:50Speaker 1: the holiday week, so many of you already listening to this.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Maybe you're logged off for the next seven days, maybe
- 1:56Speaker 1: you're working at some point in the next seven days,
- 1:58Speaker 1: whatever the case may be, I want to tell you
- 2:01Speaker 1: something that I took a while to learn as an entrepreneur,
- 2:06Speaker 1: and that is that it can wait. Maybe you're not
- 2:11Speaker 1: off of work and you are getting after it over
- 2:15Speaker 1: the next week and you're trying to do business with
- 2:18Speaker 1: people that aren't around, or perhaps you're kind of giving
- 2:22Speaker 1: yourself a hard time about taking some time to relax
- 2:26Speaker 1: and recharge this time of year. Whatever your situation is,
- 2:31Speaker 1: whatever you're stressing about right now, it can wait. And
- 2:37Speaker 1: regardless of what your family situation is, you deserve to
- 2:43Speaker 1: dial it back a little bit and know that the
- 2:47Speaker 1: urgency that maybe you feel at other points in time,
- 2:51Speaker 1: you don't need to let that infiltrate into your mindset.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Right this moment in our go go go culture, the hustle,
- 3:00Speaker 1: the comparison, all these things, it's so normal and understandable
- 3:05Speaker 1: that we are constantly comparing ourselves to what everybody else
- 3:10Speaker 1: has going on. But in this time of the year
- 3:13Speaker 1: that is so often that emphasis is on family. Be
- 3:18Speaker 1: present with where your feet are, Be where your feet are,
- 3:24Speaker 1: know that the other things they'll be there next week,
- 3:28Speaker 1: and dare I say it the week after that. I
- 3:32Speaker 1: also will throw this caveat in there that a lot
- 3:35Speaker 1: of us feel some kind of way when someone else
- 3:38Speaker 1: comes to us with an urgent issue. But someone else's
- 3:42Speaker 1: sense of urgency isn't your responsibility, especially right now when
- 3:48Speaker 1: you have other priorities. So there's a way to handle
- 3:51Speaker 1: these interactions with grace and kindness, and there's a way
- 3:54Speaker 1: for you to uphold your boundaries. I encourage you to
- 3:57Speaker 1: do whatever it is that you have to do right
- 3:59Speaker 1: now to give yourself a little bit of an exhil
- 4:04Speaker 1: My question for you this week, what is one thing
- 4:06Speaker 1: you're looking forward to before the end of the year.
- 4:09Speaker 1: What is one thing maybe one person you're going to see,
- 4:13Speaker 1: what activity you're going to do, something new you're going
- 4:15Speaker 1: to try that you are looking forward to over the
- 4:19Speaker 1: next week before twenty twenty four And now I'll listener question.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Hi, Emily This is Brain from Washington, d C. I've
- 4:29Speaker 2: actually been a fan for a very long time. I
- 4:32Speaker 2: found you on Instagram back in twenty seventeen, and I
- 4:35Speaker 2: remember the first episode of Hurdle you ever released. So
- 4:40Speaker 2: I got laid off last week and this is the
- 4:42Speaker 2: first time this has ever happened to me. Ultimately, I
- 4:45Speaker 2: actually think this is going to be a good thing.
- 4:47Speaker 2: I had in aligned with my company for a while,
- 4:49Speaker 2: but I felt very loyal to the people I worked
- 4:51Speaker 2: with and the work I was doing, and I also
- 4:54Speaker 2: feel financially stable that I'm not worried about that right now,
- 4:57Speaker 2: and I've been reaching out to old bosses and college
- 5:00Speaker 2: for a new job. But the one thing that I'm
- 5:03Speaker 2: worried about is actually all the free time I'm going
- 5:07Speaker 2: to be having for a while. I'm definitely someone who
- 5:10Speaker 2: enjoys working, being productive, being needed, and I think, like
- 5:14Speaker 2: a lot of Americans, I put a lot of my
- 5:17Speaker 2: self worth into being productive, which I don't like. So
- 5:22Speaker 2: my question is, do you have any advice on how
- 5:26Speaker 2: to fill my abundant free time that I have right now?
- 5:30Speaker 2: And if you have any advice on how to quiet
- 5:34Speaker 2: my overactive brain and maybe not fall into a pit
- 5:38Speaker 2: of self doubt or unworthiness while allowing myself to rest.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Maybe I we'd love to hear any thoughts or advice
- 5:47Speaker 2: you have, and I really look forward to all the
- 5:50Speaker 2: content that's coming in twenty twenty four.
- 5:52Speaker 1: First of all, I love a listener question from a
- 5:55Speaker 1: long time hurdler. Thank you so much for your support
- 5:57Speaker 1: over the years. And you know that I love coming
- 6:00Speaker 1: to Washington, d C. So sending so much love down
- 6:03Speaker 1: to you there. And Hey, as you know, because you've
- 6:06Speaker 1: been listening for a while, I've gone through this and
- 6:09Speaker 1: I hear you there. All of everything that you're saying
- 6:13Speaker 1: is entirely understandable. Right The uncertainty is something that can
- 6:17Speaker 1: be anxiety provoking. I too put a lot of my
- 6:22Speaker 1: worth into what I do for work. But what I'm
- 6:25Speaker 1: hearing you say even in asking this question, is that
- 6:28Speaker 1: you know that there is so much opportunity ahead of
- 6:32Speaker 1: you right now, right now, you have the opportunity to
- 6:36Speaker 1: take this time and do something with it. So I
- 6:40Speaker 1: suggest to you a bit of a reframe. I suggest
- 6:44Speaker 1: to you, what is it that you can do right
- 6:47Speaker 1: now that really serves you the person that has nothing
- 6:52Speaker 1: to do with your work. What is it that excites you.
- 6:55Speaker 1: What is it that you've been putting off? Who is
- 6:57Speaker 1: it that you want to connect with? How do you
- 6:59Speaker 1: want to be in your body and your health and
- 7:01Speaker 1: your mental well being. Take this opportunity for a proper reset,
- 7:07Speaker 1: knowing that all of the work and everything and the
- 7:11Speaker 1: theme of today's episode, it's gonna be there for you
- 7:14Speaker 1: when you're ready to get back to it. This is
- 7:16Speaker 1: truly an opportunity for you. This is something that happened
- 7:21Speaker 1: for you, So treat it as such, treat it as
- 7:25Speaker 1: a gift. And again, I get it. It's not necessarily
- 7:28Speaker 1: easy to reframe in that way to make this mental switch,
- 7:32Speaker 1: But know that the sooner that you give in to
- 7:36Speaker 1: the possibilities that are in front of you, the sooner
- 7:38Speaker 1: that energy will greet you right. The sooner your energy
- 7:41Speaker 1: will find like energy, and what is for you and
- 7:44Speaker 1: what is meant to be for you will really start
- 7:47Speaker 1: to feel like you are in alignment. That's when the
- 7:50Speaker 1: good opportunity starts showing up. When we stop worrying and
- 7:53Speaker 1: trying to control the things that we aren't really able
- 7:56Speaker 1: to control, and we just give in and allow So
- 8:01Speaker 1: allow see how that feels, and document it. Write things down,
- 8:05Speaker 1: pay attention to what's going on in your heart and
- 8:08Speaker 1: your mind and your body. I promise you, and you
- 8:11Speaker 1: even said this. I know that this was supposed to
- 8:13Speaker 1: happen for me. I know that this is going to
- 8:15Speaker 1: be good for me, So allow it to be good
- 8:17Speaker 1: for you. Instead of stressing about the things that you
- 8:20Speaker 1: cannot control. I know you've got this soon to be
- 8:24Speaker 1: another hurdle conquered. Have a great holiday weekend everyone, and
- 8:30Speaker 1: I will catch you in the new year.
