[upbeat music] Good morning, good afternoon, or good evening, listener.
• 0:21
Oh, very Truman of you. Thank you for joining us on this Full Spectrum Cycling Show, number 126. Bam. 126. This is the last show in the old shop. Ooh. I've heard that before.
• 0:34
Well, this is, is- [laughs] We've got no choice now... this is like payday. So, hey- Right, because I have the internet shut off the day after tomorrow, so- I have a Wi-Fi, a hotspot...
• 0:42
power at the end of the month, so I guess we could kinda still do one here, but. I have a hotspot and I have a lot of data left. Yeah. Data. [laughs] Oh, nice. We can sort that out. Hey, everybody, JK to my right.
• 0:53
Yes, with the hotspot data. Tony Burger across from me with his- Hey... River West 24 shirt that I still don't care for that much, those colors. Yeah, I know.
• 1:02
And what- But they nailed it just what they were looking for... Mi- Miami Vice called. They want their shirt back. Right? That's exactly what they were shooting for. No. Right. Terrible. Nah, it was Saved by the Bell.
• 1:09
That's the other one they were- Okay... said it was going for. Yeah. And joining us in the studio tonight, Andrew Zahn. Greetings, greetings. Welcome, Andrew. Thank you. Hello, Andrew.
• 1:17
I think last time you were here, we kind of- Went off the rails? Went off the ra- well, that happens every week- [laughs] Pretty much... pretty much, right? Yes. We have no rails.
• 1:25
Um, but, you know, there's, uh, there's some stuff I w- I wanna talk about with you that is semi, sorta, kinda cycling related, but, uh, uh, we haven't seen you for a f- for a few days. What's going on with you?
• 1:38
Hmm, not much. Uh- Hey... just got back from, uh, camping. That was nice. Went out to, uh, Iowa. Apparently- Iowa...
• 1:46
uh, Iowa is the only, is the nearest place that you can go to, like, get campsites with only like three days notice, 'cause- Oh, really? Yeah. Yeah. The Wisconsin River was, uh- Packed? No, just flooded. Oh. Of course.
• 1:56
Uh- Oh, sure... 25,000 cubic feet per second. Uh, and normally they wanna let people in at that 7 to 10,000 cubic square feet per second. Uh- And then they'll- Yeah... so no sandbars on the- Yeah.
• 2:08
Oh, there, there was none. On our, on our way back, I took 60 and it was, it was super high water. Um- Wow... I do gotta give a shout-out to, uh, uh, Wisconsin River Outings.
• 2:18
They canceled, uh, reservations, like, on Wednesday. Got into it a little bit with, uh, somebody on Facebook and were like, "Hey, we're professionals. That water is not gonna drop by this weekend." Yeah.
• 2:30
And eventually it did, saw the light of day. It was actually kinda civil on the end. Where did you end up in Iowega? Uh, Yellow River Campground, and ended up doing, um, the, uh- [laughs] Dude, Yellow River.
• 2:44
Come on, man... I know where Mike's, I know where Mi- exactly where Mike's head was going with that one. [laughs] Dude, it was just floating out there. So that's right across from Prairie du Chien there, right?
• 2:50
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, that's on the way over to Decorah. Yeah. Oh, we... I stopped at, uh, um- Where were you?... Top Wing Cliff. Oh, TG, well, TG's on top of the hill now, but- Yeah...
• 3:00
it used to be right down in town, which it's kind of gruesome to get up that hill on a bike, but they do run a shuttle. If you happen to go to Decorah and wanna go downtown, then get to TG, you just get on a shuttle. Oh.
• 3:10
That's how you do that. Or you ride up a two and a half mile hill. That's a pretty outstanding- Sure... bit of beer those humans make. Whoa. Yeah, they, they- I, I-... they got some strong beers. Yeah, they do...
• 3:19
well, that Pseudo Sue is, like- Just don't. Oh, yeah... top, it's like the top three or something at, uh- Oh, yeah... at your event did. Have you tried their, their double of that? Yeah. The King Sue or- Yeah, King Sue.
• 3:28
Yeah. No. Ooh, that's a banger. It is. Um- Yeah... for sure. I think they have three of them. You gotta do the shit. I think, I think it's one that if you had it, you don't remember you had it. Yeah, yeah.
• 3:36
There's a little bit of that. So you have to have somebody re- remind you that, "Oh, you remember you had that?" Yeah. "That was your last beer." [laughs] Oh, that, that's what Untappd is for.
• 3:44
[laughs] Untappd lets me know everything that I've drank. [laughs] Oh, it... Does it... Can you... They should have, like, codes on every can so you can just scan it and not have to- Oh, yeah, you can do that too...
• 3:52
manually put in your- Do all the heavy lifting yourself. Oh, there you go. So it's got, that's... It, it... You know, that, that thing they call a UPC code? I was thinking more of a QR code, but- Right, right...
• 3:59
I guess it's really the same thing and- Oh, QR codes scare the shit out of me. Do they? Yeah, me too. Oh, yeah. Hate 'em. P- easiest- Easiest way to get a virus... way. Yeah, yeah.
• 4:06
Uh, people, uh, actually, uh, City of Milwaukee just, uh, put out an announcement. Uh, if you see a QR code on a garbage can, do not scan it. Oh, nice. It's one of my- Oh... neighbor's garbage can right now. No shit.
• 4:17
Uh- Oh, Jesus... what, what's... And, you know, some of them now, like, it, it has, like, the company's name in it or something, and it's... You can kinda do, like, graphics inside of 'em or whatever.
• 4:26
Yeah, and that's part of the, the, the QR spec. You can degrade it down to, like, uh, 40% of the original QR code- Oh, gotcha... so you have 40% of that left. Right.
• 4:36
So then, you know, our descendant- I think we talked about this in the last show too. Did we? But I do, I did s- We talked about QR codes? I did see this. I don't know. Okay. Oh, yeah.
• 4:43
Pretty soon there's two nerds- Well, yeah, but-... in here, and they start nerdlingering- But, no... over here...
• 4:47
it, no, but if you put all the QR codes on the floor- Um, I just watched the fourth episode of the first season of The X-Files called Conduit.
• 4:57
And then if you just look at it from the right perspective, it will be the sister who was abducted at- The new X-Files or the old X-Files? Old X-Files- Interesting... over at Lake Okoboji.
• 5:08
They have- It's all abo- it's all about Lake Okoboji... they had QR codes way back then? Holy mackerel. Uh- You got it. It's been around for a while. It was binary. It was b- Yeah, it was... it was binary.
• 5:17
It was ones and zeros. But- Eight of the same... all the same Oh, oh, oh, the ASCII code, or ASCII art. I'm just saying if we're gonna nerd out, we're gonna nerd out. All right, so- Come on. Yeah... back on subject. Of?
• 5:30
Of Iowa? X-Files? Camping. Camping. Oh, yeah, yeah.
• 5:34
[laughs] So we went camping, and, uh, um, we were just kinda sad that we weren't gonna be on the, on the water, so somebody looked up, like, tubing, and there's a site called Y'all Be Tubin'. Huh.
• 5:45
And you go down the, the Grand River, uh, which is, like, maybe 15 feet wide- Nice... uh, and, uh- Tube... get super drunk and super sunburned. Awesome. And make it semi-yellow. Fantastic. Yeah, yeah.
• 5:56
Oh- You get a little yellow... oh, yeah, yeah. There, there was a lot of people just doing, like, a weird squat- Semi-yellow... in the... Is that a thing? [laughs] The water was only like 12 inches deep.
• 6:03
[laughs] Exactly. 12 inches. Color. He said yellow color. We have a color? I can't. Well. Ah. Hey, wait. We have a color. Let's, uh, let's, let's- Shit... let's call the color back, 'cause- 'Cause we didn't...
• 6:12
'cause we can do that. Is it chewy? Someone from Iowa Somebody from Iowa. [gasps] I know who this is. Let's check it out. Iowegian. He's a good guy. We'll figure it out. Uh- Uh-oh... uh, hello and stuff.
• 6:26
Is it me you're looking for? I just called to say hello. [laughs] I don't know. Just lying along rich- Calling you. Hey. I hear somebody. Hey, genius, what's going on? [echo] I just called you. What are you doing? Dude.
• 6:41
[echo] Hello? Hey, is that you? Is this... This is me. Is that you? Is it... Can you gu- can you guys hear us? We're trying, we're trying new fancy schmancy stuff. It doesn't sound right.
• 6:51
Sounds like you're- Sounds like you're in a car at 80 miles an hour... sounds like you're in a truck. Sounds like you, you're calling us from beyond.
• 6:56
Sound like you're in a, uh, in the shower at, uh, in the movie Porky's. And we're on the other side of the wall. We can adjust it. Hold on. Yeah. Get rid of that, get rid of that fancy technology. Yeah.
• 7:07
It's probably a- Oh, Jesus. Oh, Jesus. There we are. That's our main dude. Yeah, there you go. Now we can insult Tony- Now you almost sound sexy There. I'm go- Now we can insult Tony in clear HD...
• 7:16
we went, we went back to the iPhone. That doesn't work. Hello? Can you hear me now? I can hear you. We can hear you. Take the condom- We're in Wisconsin someplace, trying to get, trying to get to, trying to get to Maine.
• 7:26
So you're already on the way to SingleSpeed USA? [laughs] If you're in Wisconsin trying to get to Maine. Hey, guess who just missed SingleSpeed USA by a week out there? My daughter was- Ooh...
• 7:36
out there last week at, at Acadia. So it's like- Oh, you're-... you went a week early. What the hell? [laughs] Come on. Yeah, we're terrible. Chris, Sven, communication. Communication.
• 7:48
So who's riding with you in that truck right now? It, it's just Spinner and I. We are, uh, in the process of... We just finished dropping off a herd of dogs to, uh, a couple people in Madison, and now we're...
• 8:01
We just went through, uh, Stroughton and- Stoughton... Stoughton, and we are... Yeah, we're out in, we're out in the back countries of, of Wisconsin, heading kinda your way actually. Right on.
• 8:14
So you're just starting your journey? When are you supposed to arrive in- Yes, we are... when are you supposed to arrive in Maine? 8:30 tomorrow morning. [laughs] I, I think, well, it's the 20.
• 8:24
Because, because we've had, uh, drinking problems and can't get into Canada, it's three hours longer. Oh, okay. Yeah, but you can't get into Canada anyway right now, can you? Yeah. Oh, oh, geez. Yes.
• 8:37
Yeah, they lifted the, the- Oh... they like us now. Ish. Ish. You just gotta fake your, uh, vaccine passport. [laughs] You can't, you can't be Canadian get...
• 8:47
You can't be Canadian get in the United States until the 20th. Oh. Who would want to? Right. So- Yeah. Why would you wanna leave Canada? I- Yeah... I'm trying to get up there. Yeah. No shit.
• 8:56
I w- I was in S- uh, Sault Ste. Marie looking and going, "Oh, well, no, they're not gonna let me over there at all, but I wanna go over there." So you expecting to get there Friday afternoon?
• 9:10
Um, I, we want, well, probably earlier Friday if we can. We're gonna do about... I think our, our goal is to try to get in eight hours tonight, so we're, you know, three hours in.
• 9:20
Hopefully get to maybe, maybe to Toledo by, before we call it quits for tonight, and then finish tomorrow sometime. I can tell you this about Toledo, Ron. I can tell you this right now.
• 9:30
[laughs] That is that, uh, it's the closest Waffle House to Milwaukee- Yes, it is... is in Toledo, Ohio. Ooh. It's also where the shit hit the fan for my car today. [laughs] It really is.
• 9:39
That is actually- And I, I, I'm, uh- Coffee, Waffle House coffee is the- It's pretty good... fucking bomb, dude. I will admit, it's pretty good. It's been a while, but it's pretty good.
• 9:50
Uh, there are a lot of Waffle Houses. At 3:00 in the morning, yes. Sometimes, uh, who's on the griddle ain't on the griddle. We could, uh, so we could, so we could stop at Waffle House in Toledo- And buy a mug...
• 10:03
and have something to eat- Mm-hmm... lay in their parking lot for a while, and then just continue on. There you go. Be fresh. Yeah, totally.
• 10:08
Actually had, before they got a Big Boy back here in the Milwaukee area, had a route that would get you to Toledo, and then to the closest- Yep... one in, uh, Michigan, where there's a Bob's Big Boy, I think, or Elias.
• 10:18
Who's over there now? Yeah, Bob's. Bob's, I think in, in- Yeah... Michigan. Do they still have the, uh, the fiberglass, uh, Big Boy? Oh, yeah. Of course. Yeah, yeah. Okay. For sure, yeah.
• 10:26
Yeah, it was, I guess, the Marcus Corporation- Doesn't count unless you do... took over the Big Boy locally. Yeah. That's why it's Mark's Big Boy- There were several, several franchisees-... and not Bob's...
• 10:33
around the country, for sure. It's normally Bob's. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Cool. So what are you bringing for bicycles in your, in your truck for this SingleSpeed USA stuff? Did you pack your Charger?
• 10:44
  Spinner is, Spinner's [laughs]...
• 10:47
By the way, just before we go into bicycles, Tony, just so you're aware, have you ever seen this, the picture of what Jesse, uh, Spinner did to, uh, Dave Lunz in the, in, in, uh, Death Alley? Oh, yeah. Oh, boy.
• 10:59
Any more talk of e-bikes, any more talk of e-bikes, that's going to be you. [laughs] Okay. The slam, the slam, the slam picture. I, I, I'll work it out. I love the picture. I love the slam picture.
• 11:08
[laughs] I love the slam picture. I'll look up, does Jesse get to slam me first or do you? He hates e-bikes. Oh, I, I, I would take care of... Jesse can take care of the legwork. Okay. I'm not gonna worry about it. Ooh.
• 11:17
All I can say is Lunz's feet were above Jesse's head. Oh, it's- Oh, I, I do recall that picture... it is the most brilliant picture, where it looks like Lunz should not be- I, I'm sorry for insulting-...
• 11:27
up, up on the living... your local fairly e-bikes. It's okay, dude. We'll, we'll dig it up and put it in the show notes hopefully. There we go. That would be a good idea.
• 11:33
And, and if I, if I remember correctly, was he on the bicycle before that move started? No, I think some- Yeah, he was still on, he was, uh- I don't know.
• 11:39
Maybe, 'cause somehow it w- it involved O'Gara, of course, to be the instigator of that whole thing. [laughs] Oh, yeah, that's right. I think it was. Yeah, yeah. [laughs] Yeah, he- But anyway- Yeah...
• 11:49
we have for bicycles, we have, I've got my state, I got my state clunker. Right on, right on. And I'm a little, I'm a little nervous about the rear wheel, so w-
• 11:59
we won't get into it right now, but a update is, um, Brad Berg, he's gone over his handlebars probably three times already on it. [laughs] Oh, really? Wow.
• 12:08
He's, he's, he's, he's taking it to places that, uh, that nobody at State Bicycle would have ever expected a bicycle to go, I don't think. Yeah. This is like beta testing, you know?
• 12:18
So yeah, so he- He's done well with it. Um, Spinner's got his Surly Krampus, and just in case, I brought along my pink one-by-one, my Surly one-by-one. Nice. Sounds good. Nice.
• 12:29
I don't think we're gonna see our state bikes before, uh, Steel Is Real next week, unfortunately.
• 12:35
No, I, I don't know if you've talked to them lately, but I talked to them last week, or maybe it was the week before that, just, just hoping to get a rear wheel from them.
• 12:44
[laughs] 'Cause I was gonna bring a spare rear wheel along just in case, and, uh, they just kinda like, "Sorry, no. Don't even think about it." So I'm assuming...
• 12:52
'Cause wasn't it supposed to be this week they were supposed to be in again with the- That was months ago... with the latest? Oh, yeah. Well, uh, yeah, I mean, it was- Yeah...
• 12:58
originally early July, and, you know, I know it's going, it's going wonky with all sorts of stuff. He was off hanging out in the cargo bays in San Diego- But the guys-...
• 13:06
like [laughs] and holding all- Joel, hey, uh, Chewy-... and holding all those cargo containers, I tell you Yeah. Ro- uh, ch- uh, Lund's left something for you here.
• 13:14
I can't tell you what it is exactly, but it's, it's a thing. And is it- So you gotta have a little- Is it a cool thing already?... gotta have a little, gotta have a... Yeah, it's somewhat green. Yeah.
• 13:22
Gotta have a little extra room in your, uh- Okay... in your vehicle to take it back with you. It turned out really cool. I was like- Yeah, man... "Wow, Lund's made something cool. That's interesting."
• 13:29
No, yeah, I, I, I, I've seen pictures of it prior to, uh, when it was, when it was g- when he was just starting to, um, figure out what we're pieces are gonna go, let's put it that way. Just T. So yeah, I'm, I'm excited.
• 13:40
Yeah, the concept worked out way cooler than I would normally give Dave credit for. [laughs] Touched my nuts to it too. [laughs] Oh, yeah, T- That's the so, because the- Tony was teabagging it over there...
• 13:49
because the easy jobs I give him to do, you never see. Right? The easy jobs you, uh, you give him to do, you never s- see. Yeah, we have to ba- He made, he made the greatest bike seat in the world for me...
• 13:58
we have to baptize it and season it, kind of, you know. It's like a cast iron skillet. Yeah, you gotta do it. Well, I don't, yeah, I don't think it would accept a whole lot of weight on it.
• 14:07
It's, it's, you'll see it's not up to phase. No, it takes weight readily. No, it's still- We're just talking about balls and urine at this point. Sorta like a- Enjoy your, uh-... baptism by water [laughs]...
• 14:16
enjoy your table there, Ron. So you guys are gonna, when do you, you're gonna r- Uh, we- Are you gonna, are you gonna roll into Milwaukee, then, a week from today, which is Friday, in- Yes... in Internet Radio Time?
• 14:30
We will, we, we, we just... Yeah, yes, we will be, Internet Radio Time will be rolling in shortly after this is, uh, posted. What, uh, what did you guys find for a place to stay? It'll be a good day.
• 14:41
I, I, I sent a bunch of, uh, Airbnb stuff to the captain and, and was curious, uh, what you guys ended up with. Well, [laughs] I'm not sure. Uh, yeah, we'll, we'll figure it out.
• 14:53
I'm not sure if we're gonna do Airbnb or not. We haven't really decided the plans yet, but we've got, like, a few hours of driving to discuss this. They're sleeping in the car.
• 15:00
Yeah, I got, I got, we got places for you to crash, for sure. They're sleeping in the car. It's just, like- Yeah... Captain was kinda like- Yeah... "Ooh, I want an Airbnb or some such." So- They're sleeping in the car.
• 15:09
Yeah. Well, that was Captain. That's not, that's not necessarily us. But what I will tell you is, is we brought the stuff along. We are gonna do a podcast post, post-race.
• 15:18
Uh, we'll do some interviews with guys at the race. We'll try to get the winners on there, that kind of, that kind of cool stuff. And, um, um, we will talk to you guy- I'm gonna let you guys get going here.
• 15:29
I will talk to you guys probably, uh, next, next, uh, a week from this podcast, if not earlier. All right. Sounds good. And, uh, just to let you know, I, I- All right...
• 15:38
I kinda dropped the ball on getting your show up, but I'm gonna try and get it up tomorrow, so, uh, hopefully. Oh, okay. Well, uh- Yeah, just so you-... well, by the way, yeah. All right.
• 15:47
Just do the, it's been hard to you guys. I'm gonna let you get going. We'll talk to you guys next week. Okay. Bye- Bye... Chewy and Spinner. All right. See you, fellas. Bye. All right. Bye.
• 15:57
So those guys are on their way to Single Speed USA, traveling down our interstate highway system, using the magic of cellular- Socialists... telephones to talk to us- Fucking socialists... over the airwaves.
• 16:07
It was- Whatever the living hell- Traveling on an interstate highway... but living hell, what the hell was he doing at the first point? Like- What do you mean? What are you saying? What do you mean? What are you saying?
• 16:16
What, w- was he in a, like, a porta potty? Oh, I think he was on some sort of speaker system of some kind. Test speaker problem. Fuck that noise, man. What you got there, Greg? [bell ringing] Oh, yes.
• 16:26
Oh, oh, that was a long climb, man. I got a top of the hill. Yeah. That was a long climb. Shit. That was a long, a long, draining climb. Plus, it's kinda, like, humid and hot in the shop. Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
• 16:35
We got beer, though. That's a good thing. To return- I'm gonna open my beer... we've had this beer more than once, uh, because it's freaking outstanding, and that would be HHG. Brewed in Candon- Central Waters...
• 16:47
Amherst, Wisconsin. Stands for Horseshoes and Hand Grenades. Yes. A pretty fantastic band- This is pretty, and a nice local band... if you've ever had the chance to see them.
• 16:57
Very, very nice bluegrass fun band to listen to. Is that the only time it counts? When they're playing bluegrass? When it's close. No, you can go anywhere you want to see them. I, I fully endorse that.
• 17:09
Horseshoes, Hand Grenades, and- And, yeah... Atom Bombs. Oh. Okay, all right. Oh, I missed that. Okay, any- I, I- By the by, by the by... Oh, yeah. Yeah, well, he's freshly shorn.
• 17:21
Horseshoes, Hand Grenades, and Atom Bombs. And, yeah. But you could go anywhere, like, go down to Nashville, and when they ask for, like, "Hey, anything by Horseshoe and Hand Grenades?" They probably will be.
• 17:33
They'll have it, yep. But when I ask for Mule Skinner Blues- They don't got it... nothing. Crickets. Don't know that one. I, yeah, no. Nice. Milwaukee, here I come. All right. Crickets.
• 17:46
So Chewy, Chewy w- [laughs] It's good to talk to Chewy, but, uh, we were kinda, we were talking to Andrew about some stuff. Yeah. Oh, yeah. But they're here also. Here's, here's- Can we talk about the baby maker too?
• 17:54
Well, I'm just saying we, we're on- Eventually. What are you doing over there? Tearing Label's office though. Making things usable. Oh. He's making things recyclable. Well- Oh. Ah, making it, yes.
• 18:03
He's like, "Save the tur-" Crackly, crackly, crackly. No, but that could kill the turtles. No, no, they're not gonna- [laughs] Don't kill the turtles. Dude. Hey, man, I'm all about the fucking turtles, man.
• 18:14
Teenage mutants. That's my, that's my total spirit animal. Just wait for it. So you know what I liked about this beer? Just wait. Just wait.
• 18:19
It's drinkable, and it's not super boozahol-y, so you can- It, it's up there, but it's not bad, right? It's very tasty. You can quaff a couple, two or three of them Couple two tree? Couple two tree.
• 18:28
Is it- So- Oh, it's only bite three... so it- it's crushable... you're right. This is totally drinkable. It's, it is crushable. All right, so you- Yeah... you had a burning question for me...
• 18:33
so, yeah, what I wanted to kinda talk about was, um, your 3D printing prowess- Oh, yes... and how we had started- We need to get into that... to talk about some stuff that was bicycle-oriented. Sure.
• 18:43
[laughs] And, you know, Tony and I also want to, maybe even JK, I'm not sure- Yeah... uh, also wanna get into this as far as, m- you know, manufacturing some bike parts. I got one here.
• 18:53
You can tell me about what you know about it so far, but, um, let me show you this thing 'cause I think it's really cool. Stang.
• 19:01
I actually, uh, was gonna bring a, um, te- [clears throat] I, I was doing a prototype canister that will sit inside of your handlebar. Uh, you use it as a replacement, uh, as, like, a bar end cap.
• 19:13
You put your dope in it? If one wanted to. Can you put your dope in there? Can you put a patch kit? So- I can put a patch kit or, uh- Why does it always go back to dope?... or yeah, some weed. I don't know. Yeah.
• 19:22
'Cause I'm a dope. You can put whatever you want in there. Well, your user oyster- Your, your- Your world is your own... at a minimum, you have two holes in your, in your bars, so, you know- Ta-da...
• 19:31
as you're waiting for your, your patch kit to cure- Ta-da. Yeah. Ta-da. Ta-da. I like that. So, um- A patch kit in the tube, I've seen that. [clears throat] I've also seen this headset down tube.
• 19:39
And my, my little spiel about manufacturing, uh, like if you wanna become, like, a mass producer, there's a bunch of... Oh, is this is some TPU. It's, so- This is definitely 3D-printed...
• 19:53
our, our, our friends at Wyatt are doing 3D printing of stuff, and that thing that, uh, Andrew has in his hand goes on the chainstay to capture the cable- Mm-hmm... as well as protect the chainstay from chain bashing.
• 20:06
But, um, I just, I like how- Oh, this is, this is really cool material... I like how flexible it is. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. So this is TPU. Uh, most people and most m- entry-level printers are gonna just- Can't... do PLA.
• 20:16
I, I can't print P- yeah. Well, it's not that they can't. They- They... they can't do it very well. Well. Right? Oh.
• 20:22
So, like, um, a, you know, for 200 bucks, you can get a Ender 3 version two, which is a super capable printer, and you might be able to do TPU.
• 20:35
Um, TPU does off-gas a lot, so you probably wanna do it in, like, a vented space. Um- [laughs]... but there, there's a point where if you're trying to- Or catch a mean buzz... if you're trying to, like- Yeah.
• 20:46
[laughs] Huff and puff, sure. Not a good buzz, but- Yeah, yeah... a mean buzz. Well, yeah. Oh, yeah. You're gonna feel it in the morning. I feel like the '90s, baby. I'm huffing paint.
• 20:52
Um, there's gonna be a point where they're gonna be better off, like, once they settle on a design, 3D printing a mold and then doing, uh, like, a, um- Injection... silicon, i- injection silicon- Injection, yeah...
• 21:07
uh, which doesn't require heat. Uh, or you could do, like, a, you, you could then l- Make a lot of them... yeah, you could then go, uh, one step further.
• 21:15
And, you know, once you've got your design for your mold and you've tested it out, then you go and have, uh, a mold maker. There's tons of them. Uh, those guys are fucking brilliant.
• 21:25
Um, that they, they can do, like, higher temp, uh, injection, and they can do different materials. Um- That's cool... but for a lot of 3D printing stuff, it's good for prototyping.
• 21:37
It's good for figuring out, like, one-off, it, you know, how it's gonna work- Mm... without having to, like, okay, you come up with your design, then you send it off to some shop somewhere that's gonna, like, make it.
• 21:46
I have to commit- And you're gonna get it back, and you're gonna be like, "Oh." You're like- I have to commit to 100 order of this- And, and they don't fit... if it doesn't- Yeah... do what I need it, yeah, yeah.
• 21:52
And, and, and then you find out it doesn't fit, right? So, like, this is perfect, and, like, I'm, I'm super impressed with the... Like, I'm, I'm just... I'm fucking with this. And this is- [laughs]
• 22:00
This, this, like- It's so tactile. Ar. Or, well, I'm, I'm, like, I'm just- [laughs]... I'm very impressed with, like, they definitely have their printers dialed in.
• 22:07
I, I can tell that it was, uh, printed probably, uh, vertical like this because you've got a little bit of a- I see that dip there. Yeah. That, that, that's an overhang. Gravidy.
• 22:18
Um, I have no idea how, uh, how well TP... I've never printed in TPU. I will not get my drink out of that. I personally wanna make that a wider stem.
• 22:25
So, okay, so, so to your point of things being only for prototyping, our friends at Chumba USA- Mm-hmm... brought some titanium manufacturing in-house, and they actually print their yoke for their bike.
• 22:36
They print a titanium yoke- Yeah... on a 3D printer. So that's some- So they have spent adult money- Yes... on, on, on, on, on their- [laughs]... on their printer. Um- Right. So it's a 6-4 titanium yoke.
• 22:49
And I mean, y- y- so obviously, I don't think these guys would do that if it wasn't up to the task of being a yoke on a bike, and that seems to me like something super cool that you can- But they're molding it out of a one single piece of titanium, aren't they?
• 23:01
I... No, no, no, no, no. No, it's 3D-printed. They're, they're 3D-printing it. Oh, you're- Yeah, yeah, yeah... printing titanium. And, and, uh- Oh, that's expensive...
• 23:05
well, I, I don't know if they're doing extrusion, right? No, it would be printing. 'Cause, like, there, there's different ty- there's SLA. Yeah. Uh- Yeah. Shade, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Or, or- Listen. Hey- All right...
• 23:12
adults are speaking, Tony. You know, uh, a, a, a lot of 3D printing that most people think of as, as basically, like, a really fancy hot glue gun on a gimbal. Right, just layers and layers- Yeah...
• 23:22
and layers and layers- Layers and layers... of whatever you're making. Yeah. Yeah. Hey, I wanna make Castle Grayskull. Please make Castle Grayskull. Yeah. There's, uh, metal sintering printing.
• 23:31
I can't remember the acronym. There's a shit ton of, uh, these acronyms. But basically, uh, you can take, like, metal powder.
• 23:37
You screen a, a, a line out, and then you just, like, laser your pattern and, and you build it up into this thing, and then you basically just shake all the dust off of it and- That sounds pretty cool to me.
• 23:49
It seems like we should be making stuff. And it's, it's super... Like, that method is very strong.
• 23:54
And there are, there are some cases where, like, 3D printing exceeds molding or, uh, even, like, six-axis, uh, CNC, uh, where, like, a CNC eventually, you, you run to a point where, like, your, your bit, your, your, your cutting tool can't get into that spot.
• 24:11
Right. And, and that's where you get those really cool, like, organic shapes, right? Sure, sure. Um, or, and, and really those are less organic, more you... Someone put a basic design into a, uh,
• 24:25
stress testing a- a- application, and they figured out how you can, like, you, you can torque it in any way you want, and then you can just, like, remove the parts that you don't want.
• 24:33
So you, you can lighten it out, but you're gonna have a bunch of, like, voids that you can't get through traditional manufacturing. Sweet. And it's super cool. And we gotta figure out stuff to make, like maybe-...
• 24:45
pipes or something. Yeah, we'll do pipes- Well, I, I, well, I mean- Let's get back to the dope again. Just saying, pipes need curves. Hey, I- And if you don't have a curve- Yeah, before we get to-... you ain't a pipe.
• 24:55
But, but, uh, uh, to, to your point, I, I mean, there, there are a lot of things, like right now, uh, like- You digressed...
• 25:01
uh, since I, I picked up the, those nice bars, uh, I need to now populate the, the, uh, Surly Moloko bars, uh, and I wanna put a phone mount.
• 25:10
And, uh, yeah, you can get like 16 bucks if you wanna pay El Jefe Bezos, uh, you know, his, his pound of flesh. Right. But, uh, he, you know, he's been to space once. I don't need to pay for his return trip.
• 25:22
Uh, and, uh, it's cooler to say, "Hey, I made that thing." Yeah, I, I dig it. Yeah. V- very, very, very handy. Uh, we, we'll be getting into it somehow.
• 25:32
Yeah, and, and I- As soon, as soon as we have electricity at the new place. [laughs] 'Cause I, I understand electricity's actually required to run these CNC printers. Yeah. They don't- They don't run by magic...
• 25:40
can't just- I, I, I, I'm excited 'cause my phone mount is my back left ass cheek. Yeah. You know? And it's kinda hard to see. And I just know, I'm like, "Okay, well, no. Okay, new phone.
• 25:51
I gotta figure out where the volume button... Okay, da, da, da, da, there we go." Yes. What? I gotta take a picture of that thing. Yeah. Yeah, that, that's definitely in the, in the show notes. That's pretty cool.
• 26:00
So, you know, I mean, so I know they're making also the, um, the other smaller cable stops that go on the frame and stuff, so they're kinda, they're doing production- Yeah, uh, uh, especially smaller stuff...
• 26:12
versions of 'em. Uh, and, and, uh, again, like, um, it, it's kinda weird but, like, so, like, we all grew up with, like, Nerf, right? I love Nerf. Uh- Nerf... you should see the DIY Nerf communities. Oh, shit.
• 26:24
They have weaponized- Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Like- Yeah... uh, like, the, the, the, the, these Nerf guns are- Half of the world... and they're not Nerf. I've sniffed around that world.
• 26:31
They call 'em Blasters to, you know, avoid, you know, whatever lawsuits. But, um, uh, you know, they, they're getting much higher velocity. They're getting, uh, they're- Clever... but th- they're getting very clever.
• 26:43
Very clever. Very, very clever. Um, but there are people that have built, like, businesses out of running print farms. Okay, sure.
• 26:52
So really, uh, like having one printer to, to, to produce things just really isn't gonna work out for you very well. Print farms. [laughs] It takes too long 'cause, like, uh, I- You need like 28.
• 27:04
Yeah, uh, that's a small number. Like, the, uh- It's like mining bitcoins. You just need a lot of 'em. Yeah, you need a lot of 'em. Need a lot of mining power.
• 27:10
And- Have you, have you driven up 45 and you see the wind farms? I think that's where- Oh, yeah... your head is going on this.
• 27:16
Going like- Going like wh- where you just keep looking to the left and going like, "Oh, there's only 1250." Um, it just keeps going- Yeah... and going- Like, crap-... and going and going and going... as it should.
• 27:28
I'm sorry. 'Cause, like, I gotta imagine that that probably took like three hours to print. Wow. Well, you could run it then, you know- But if he has 10-... 24 hours a day.
• 27:36
Yeah, but if, yeah, if you, if you had a bunch of them- Wee, wee, wee, wee, wee... and there's, like, I've, I've, I've, I've talked to guys that have print farms. A band?
• 27:44
And they, they will like, they'll set up all their printers to do like a, a, a long, like, 20-hour print or something like that, and then they'll go on vacation or whatever. Yeah. You know? Right.
• 27:52
And then they'll come back and they can just like s- you know, pull the parts off and, uh, do whatever post-processing they need to do.
• 27:57
They're dial in that well that- As long as you're buying a printer from somebody that's been around for more than a couple of months, you're going to get a decent enough printer that out of the box you're going to be able to get something usable out of it.
• 28:10
Nice. The, the- Hey, guess what I noticed? What? I, I noticed that Big Sexy's on the line. I might, it might have been, [laughs] it might have been a while. Sorry, Big Sexy. Hey, everybody. Welcome to the radio program.
• 28:24
Caller, who do we have on the line? Yes. [snores] [laughs] Well, you- Is your on-hold music that bad? Well, what do you- Wake up. Wait, you don't like our, our 3D printer chat? Wake up. No, actually, that was me. Oh.
• 28:40
Yeah. [laughs] Oh. Maybe he fell asleep, A-B-S. [snores] Big, Big, Big- Stop, stop, stop it. Stop it... maybe we're on mute. No, no, no. No, we're not. Oh, well. I, I saw you. Hey, guys. I tried to call you.
• 28:56
It's Big Sexy. I'm calling from the road. [laughs] It's Jake here- [laughs]... imitating Big Sexy. Sorry. Did a very bad job of it. I don't know what, I don't know what happened.
• 29:06
It didn't really, we didn't, we didn't pick him up. Just saying. That said, he was listening to the show or sleeping- Well, well... while we talked 3D printers for a while. So I'm giving my...
• 29:13
Yes, he can, he can critique my impersonation of him as whatever. But we do not have an- I'm riding Cass Street from sunrise, and you can get some Jagermeister. Yeah, it's... but I don't have any Jagermeister.
• 29:29
And to, to be fair- That's what the problem is... to be fair- When is the show over?... we have wasted our listeners' half hour- When is the show over?... once again. Right now it's over. [laughs] Thank you very much.
• 29:38
Have a nice day, everybody. Let's end that. Uh, maybe we'll talk to Big Sexy next week. I don't know. All right. First, first show in the new place, uh, may be battery powered, maybe not. Whoo, we're doing it.
• 29:47
Maybe not, maybe across the street. We're doing it. Who knows? Let's solar it. I know- Well, there's an array of maybe a couple hundred watts on top of the roof somewhere. I don't think this gizmo takes much juice.
• 29:58
But I do have a big battery. 15 volt, one amp. No, we got that. Yeah. Yeah, I got, I got power. We could have power. Can't, can't we convert- How?... some of these Buffangs into, uh, generators? Any motor's a generator.
• 30:07
I think they probably, they probably have a thing on the battery we could just- Exactly... tap into, couldn't we? Just like a USB right into it. Oh, well, there, there's, there's USB on, on my bore, uh, in two places.
• 30:16
Well- There you go... we'll find out next week. Well, everybody, we'll probably find out next week when we talk more- There, attention then... USBs and PCAs and- PCs and FDV USBs... Wi-Fi hotspots. I'm so tech, aren't I?
• 30:31
  [upbeat music]
