Latest / The 47 Morning Update with Ben Ferguson / Trump Goes All-In on Historic GOP Midterm Convention
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: And to do it the rest of the campaign, the
- 0:02Speaker 1: super PAC would have to spend $ 40 million, but the
- 0:05Speaker 1: Tallarico campaign would only need to spend $ 8 million to
- 0:09Speaker 1: reach this, to shout as loud as the super PAC.
- 0:12Speaker 1: The president's PAC needs to spend somewhere between a hundred
- 0:16Speaker 1: and $ 150 million in the remaining six weeks of the campaign,
- 0:19Speaker 1: simply to be on the level playing field with Tallarico,
- 0:23Speaker 1: who has to spend with the lowest unit rate considerably less.
- 0:27Speaker 2: You're listening to the 47 Morning Update with Ben Ferguson.
- 0:30Speaker 3: Good Saturday morning to you. Ben Ferguson with you. And
- 0:33Speaker 3: these are some of the stories that you may have
- 0:35Speaker 3: missed that we talked about this week on the 47
- 0:38Speaker 3: Morning Update.
- 0:39Speaker 4: First up, Donald Trump in.
- 0:40Speaker 3: A Labor Day message says the GOP will win big
- 0:44Speaker 3: in the midterms because the radical left lunatics, communists and
- 0:48Speaker 3: Democrats trying to, quote, ruin America. We'll have the details
- 0:52Speaker 3: of exactly what his plan is. Up next, President Donald
- 0:56Speaker 3: Trump's MAGA Inc. has now poured $ 10 million into Ken
- 1:01Speaker 3: Paxton's Senate race in Texas. What's behind the decision and
- 1:05Speaker 3: what does it mean moving forward? We break that down
- 1:07Speaker 3: as well. Before I get to that, the midterm elections,
- 1:10Speaker 3: they're heating up like we haven't seen in a long time.
- 1:13Speaker 3: Congressional control and President Donald Trump's agenda hang in the
- 1:17Speaker 3: balance and every headline has the potential to shift the odds.
- 1:21Speaker 3: On CalSheet, you can trade major primaries, election outcomes, and
- 1:26Speaker 3: the biggest political stories, literally, as they happen. Now, we
- 1:30Speaker 3: were talking in the show today about Kim Paxton and
- 1:34Speaker 3: the real possibility of defeating Tallarico. Right now, Paxton is
- 1:38Speaker 3: currently trading at 50%, meaning $ 100 trade. would pay out
- 1:45Speaker 3: $ 93 if he beats Tallarico. That is why it's so

- 2:31Speaker 4: It's the 47 Morning Update, and it starts right now.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Story number one.
- 2:35Speaker 3: I tell you what, the Republican convention, it has been
- 2:39Speaker 3: truly incredible. We're going to break it all down for
- 2:42Speaker 3: you right now, since after one in the morning... After
- 2:46Speaker 3: night two of the Republican convention, and it has been
- 2:49Speaker 3: a whirlwind, President Donald Trump made it clear that he
- 2:53Speaker 3: believed we needed a midterm convention to talk to the
- 2:56Speaker 3: American people and to explain to them why life is
- 2:59Speaker 3: better off now with Trump's policies, America first policies, than
- 3:03Speaker 3: what we will have if Democrats regain control of the
- 3:06Speaker 3: House and or the Senate. Now, we know how slim
- 3:09Speaker 3: the margins have been, especially on the Senate side, and
- 3:12Speaker 3: for that matter, on the House side. And Democrats are
- 3:15Speaker 3: betting on many Trump voters staying home on Election Day
- 3:19Speaker 3: this coming November. President Donald Trump predicted on Monday in
- 3:24Speaker 3: his Labor Day message that Republicans will win big in
- 3:27Speaker 3: the critical midterm elections this November. Trump delivering this message,
- 3:32Speaker 3: which he also decided to go after Democrats in a
- 3:35Speaker 3: post on True Social.
- 3:37Speaker 4: Here's what he said.
- 3:38Speaker 3: Quote, Happy Labor Day to all, including the radical left lunatics,
- 3:42Speaker 3: the communists, and the Democrats who will do anything possible
- 3:46Speaker 3: to destroy our country. These deranged people, after fighting for
- 3:50Speaker 3: 10 years, should finally acknowledge that your favorite president, me,
- 3:55Speaker 3: knows how to win. They should be exhausted by now,
- 3:58Speaker 3: but sadly they're not. They're going to give it one
- 4:00Speaker 3: last shot at ruining America. But we're not going to
- 4:03Speaker 3: let that happen. We're going to win the midterms big
- 4:06Speaker 3: and save America. President Donald J.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Trump.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Now, Republicans control the House of Representatives with a 218-214
- 4:12Speaker 3: majority over the Democrats. With one independent, Representative Kevin Kiley,
- 4:20Speaker 3: a Republican from California, well, he defected. Now, in the Senate,
- 4:24Speaker 3: Republicans hold a 53-47 majority when all senators are actually
- 4:29Speaker 3: present and voting. That's the big problem for Donald Trump there. Now,
- 4:34Speaker 3: for a party with a presidency in both chambers in Congress,
- 4:37Speaker 3: it is historically incredibly difficult. to preserve both the congressional
- 4:42Speaker 3: majorities at the midterm elections. Prevailing in the midterms has
- 4:46Speaker 3: only happened twice for a majority party with control of
- 4:50Speaker 3: both chambers and the presidency. It most recently happened back
- 4:55Speaker 3: in 2002, when Republicans expanded their majorities under President George W.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Bush on the heels of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks. Now,
- 5:05Speaker 3: before that, Democrats expanded their majorities in the House and
- 5:08Speaker 3: the Senate under President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
- 5:11Speaker 4: Back in 1934.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Republicans, by the way, received a positive sign in the
- 5:16Speaker 3: latest Harvard-Harris poll. Among likely voters, 51% said they're more
- 5:21Speaker 3: likely to vote for a Republican than And 49 percent
- 5:24Speaker 3: said they're more likely to vote for a Democrat, giving
- 5:27Speaker 3: the GOP a two percentage point advantage. Now, the survey
- 5:31Speaker 3: goes against broader polling trends showing Democrats with an edge
- 5:37Speaker 3: and the generic congressional ballot. Now, the poll was also
- 5:41Speaker 3: conducted over the last several days. In fact, it was
- 5:44Speaker 3: the 28th of August through the 30th. Now, President Trump's
- 5:47Speaker 3: message and the publication of the poll also comes as Republicans,
- 5:52Speaker 3: as I mentioned, are set to host a first of
- 5:55Speaker 3: its kind Republican convention in the midterms. That will happen
- 6:00Speaker 3: in Dallas, Texas this week. We will be there live,
- 6:03Speaker 3: by the way, each and every day. And as the
- 6:05Speaker 3: Trump line powerhouse super PAC MAGA Inc. has begun spending
- 6:10Speaker 3: by committing $ 10 million as well to the Texas Senate
- 6:14Speaker 3: race between Republican Kim Paxson and the Democrat James Tallarico.
- 6:19Speaker 4: I'm going to have more on that in a moment.
- 6:22Speaker 3: But let me wrap up this first story by saying
- 6:24Speaker 3: it is clear the president's ready to fight. He's ready
- 6:27Speaker 3: to fight hard. He's ready to remind the American people
- 6:30Speaker 3: of exactly why the president's agenda is important. And if
- 6:34Speaker 3: you voted for President Trump's agenda just two years ago,
- 6:37Speaker 3: then it's time to make sure you don't let Democrats
- 6:39Speaker 3: stop it for the next two years. And that's why
- 6:42Speaker 3: this midterm convention clearly is so vitally important.
- 6:46Speaker 4: Next story, number two. There is a massive.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Race in Texas and virtually everyone is talking about in
- 6:52Speaker 3: the political world and almost every political donor has connections
- 6:56Speaker 3: to this race.
- 6:58Speaker 4: The amount of money coming into James.
- 6:59Speaker 3: Tallarico's campaign from outside the state of Texas is historic
- 7:04Speaker 3: and a number in which we've.
- 7:05Speaker 4: Never dreamed of before.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Well, now there are concerns that there's not enough money
- 7:10Speaker 3: going into Ken Paxton's campaign and to his corner and
- 7:14Speaker 3: to advocating for him. Well, President Donald Trump's MAGA Inc.,
- 7:18Speaker 3: the super PAC that he is behind, is putting at
- 7:21Speaker 3: least $ 10 million, we were told over the weekend, behind
- 7:25Speaker 3: the Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in that race against Tallarico.
- 7:29Speaker 3: A Federal Election Commission filing that was submitted on Saturday
- 7:34Speaker 3: shows the group plans to spend $ 5 million promoting Paxton
- 7:39Speaker 3: and then another $ 5 million directly attacking the record of
- 7:42Speaker 3: James Tallarico. The filing marks MAGA Inc. 's first reported
- 7:47Speaker 3: investment in the fall campaign ahead of the November midterm elections.
- 7:52Speaker 3: And when it comes to taxes, Ken Paxton is the
- 7:55Speaker 3: better choice. And the MAGA War Room put out their
- 7:57Speaker 3: first campaign, well, video. And here's what it sounded like.
- 8:03Speaker 6: James Tallarico voted to make it easier to increase property taxes,
- 8:07Speaker 6: supported a $ 4 trillion tax hike, and Tallarico supports a
- 8:11Speaker 6: radical healthcare plan that could close rural hospitals and cost
- 8:15Speaker 6: thousands in new taxes. Ken Paxton supports tax cuts and
- 8:20Speaker 6: has a plan to let you deduct medical expenses and
- 8:23Speaker 6: the down payment on your home. When it comes to taxes,
- 8:27Speaker 6: Ken Paxton's the better choice. Mega Inc. is responsible for
- 8:31Speaker 6: the content of this advertising.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Now, you can hear there it's pretty clear that MAGA Inc.
- 8:36Speaker 3: is making sure that this election is about the economy.
- 8:39Speaker 3: In fact, the MAGA Inc. spokesperson said Saturday that the
- 8:43Speaker 3: group plans to focus its campaign on Tallarico's tax record
- 8:47Speaker 3: and other policy positions, saying high-tax Tallarico wants to take
- 8:51Speaker 3: money out of Texans' pockets. It's going to ensure, they say,
- 8:55Speaker 3: that Texans know about Tallarico's radical policies and why it's
- 9:00Speaker 3: so important to elect Paxson to the U.S.
- 9:02Speaker 4: Senate.
- 9:03Speaker 3: Now, James Tallarico not only means higher taxes, but here's
- 9:06Speaker 3: the second ad that they're now running.
- 9:09Speaker 4: Tired of paying more in taxes? Ken Paxton pushing his
- 9:12Speaker 4: new plan to make living more affordable for Texans.
- 9:16Speaker 6: Paxton's plan? Doubling the child tax credit. Big write-offs for
- 9:20Speaker 6: medical expenses. And a $ 50, 000 deduction for first-time homebuyers. James
- 9:24Speaker 6: Tallarico supported a trillion-dollar tax hike. Higher property taxes and
- 9:29Speaker 6: higher taxes on Social Security.
- 9:31Speaker 4: Tallarico, higher taxes. Paxton, lower taxes. A clear choice. Mega Inc.
- 9:37Speaker 4: is responsible for the content of this advertising.
- 9:39Speaker 3: It's very clear this race is heating up. Now, before
- 9:42Speaker 3: entering the Texas race, MAGA Inc. only major midterm expenditure
- 9:47Speaker 3: was $ 827, 000 payment benefiting Senator Darlene Graham's campaign in South Carolina.
- 9:54Speaker 3: The group had otherwise spent roughly 18,000 on a midterm
- 9:58Speaker 3: contest this year, following about 1.7 million in spending last year. Now,
- 10:03Speaker 3: it's raised approximately 401 million through the end of the
- 10:06Speaker 3: second quarter. Trump said Friday that the super PAC could
- 10:10Speaker 3: use between 400 and 500 million of its roughly 1
- 10:14Speaker 3: billion in available funds to help Republican candidates vote. quote,
- 10:18Speaker 3: I'm going to spend whatever amount of money is necessary
- 10:20Speaker 3: to try and help us, Trump said to reporters. Paxton,
- 10:24Speaker 3: as you know, is set to face Tallarico in November
- 10:27Speaker 3: after the Democrat defeated Jasmine Crockett, the radical left Democrat,
- 10:31Speaker 3: in the March primary. Paxton secured the Republican nomination after
- 10:36Speaker 3: defeating the incumbent, Senator John Cornyn, in a May runoff. Now,
- 10:41Speaker 3: the Texas contest is expected to be among the races
- 10:44Speaker 3: that could decide control of the Senate.
- 10:46Speaker 4: And as I mentioned earlier, Republicans hold that very thin
- 10:49Speaker 4: majority at 53-47.
- 10:53Speaker 3: So now you know we are getting ready for the
- 10:55Speaker 3: big week this week of the midterm convention. And you'll
- 10:58Speaker 3: understand exactly what the president's focused on. And that is
- 11:01Speaker 3: getting candidates like Ken Paxton across the finish line. And
- 11:06Speaker 3: it's clear he's asking for all of your help, not
- 11:09Speaker 3: just financially, but also getting out and voting.
