- 0:51Speaker 1: report from the Folkston Victor Disability Team, and our special
- 0:58Speaker 1: guests in the studio today is local runner Dan Kelly,
- 1:02Speaker 1: who run his very first marathon at the iconic London Marathon,
- 1:06Speaker 1: raising money for the Royal British Legion. So let's start
- 1:16Speaker 1: the show with a dodgy song. Yes, it's dodgy and
- 1:19Speaker 1: he's good enough. Where they go a great song to
- 1:41Speaker 1: start a show, And I guess that's just told me
- 1:44Speaker 1: that it reminds me of his dodgy knees. That's dodgy
- 1:48Speaker 1: and good enough. Okay, so we joined in the studio
- 1:52Speaker 1: today by Dan Kelly. Hello Dan, how are you?
- 1:54Speaker 2: I'm very well, Thank you, thank you write me down.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Yeah, no, he's welcome.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Now.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Then it's been I reckon, it's been about five weeks
- 2:01Speaker 1: since you first, well since you run the London Marathon
- 2:05Speaker 1: and raising money for the Rural British Legion. I mean,
- 2:08Speaker 1: can you believe that you actually did it?
- 2:10Speaker 2: Still know, when I look at my toenails and as
- 2:13Speaker 2: I say, when I feel my knees, they're reminding me
- 2:16Speaker 2: that I did it. And every so often I pick
- 2:18Speaker 2: up the medal and look through the photos that we have.
- 2:21Speaker 2: It's been a it feels like such a long time ago,
- 2:23Speaker 2: but again it feels like yesterday.
- 2:25Speaker 1: What a day though, what a day to live on
- 2:26Speaker 1: in your memory. I've still got a picture of myself
- 2:29Speaker 1: with the medal on my mantelpiece and twenty eleven it was,
- 2:34Speaker 1: and you know, I still think, oh, what a great day. Okay,
- 2:37Speaker 1: So tell us a little bit about yourself and how
- 2:40Speaker 1: you decided to run a marathon, especially for the Rural
- 2:42Speaker 1: British Legion.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Well, it was something that's always been on the bucket list.
- 2:46Speaker 2: So you know, when I was younger, used to watch
- 2:48Speaker 2: it every Sunday, watching Charlie Spedding going through I think
- 2:51Speaker 2: was in the early eighties, so something that was always there.
- 2:54Speaker 2: And then I've always had a relatively decent level of
- 2:56Speaker 2: fitness through the military, so it was always kind of
- 2:59Speaker 2: on my bucket list. But then when we fast forward
- 3:01Speaker 2: through to the modern day, it was I was talking
- 3:04Speaker 2: to Autumn Richardson at work the twenty twenty.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Four Yes, Autumn is a formal guest of the show.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Yes so, and she said, you really need to do it,
- 3:11Speaker 2: and that really kind of sowed the seed. And there's
- 3:14Speaker 2: lots of other reasons why it was the right time
- 3:16Speaker 2: really for me to go, Yes, you know, this is
- 3:18Speaker 2: something I want to do, and my connections and the
- 3:21Speaker 2: family's connections were ryal Bitish Legion made it something really
- 3:24Speaker 2: that it was something that I wanted to do specially.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Yeah, well what was the connection with the British Legion.
- 3:29Speaker 2: So my new wife who got married in June last year,
- 3:33Speaker 2: her parents have been very involved in the Royal Bridge Legion,
- 3:38Speaker 2: Mare Hall and Chliton Branch. They've been fundraising doing the
- 3:41Speaker 2: popy appeals for many many years. Raves and an astounding
- 3:44Speaker 2: amount of money. And now as they're getting a little
- 3:47Speaker 2: bit older in years, they're taking a bit more of
- 3:49Speaker 2: a back seat. And I really felt that I wanted
- 3:51Speaker 2: to do something to kind of mark almost to dedicate
- 3:55Speaker 2: it to them. Really, So that was the first seed.
- 3:58Speaker 1: So did you going back before the marathon? Then? Did
- 4:01Speaker 1: you put in for the ballot place or did you
- 4:03Speaker 1: go straight for the charity place?
- 4:04Speaker 2: I put in for the ballot place obviously was unsuccessful.
- 4:08Speaker 2: But before the ballot result even came through, I approached
- 4:12Speaker 2: the RBL obviously told them the story of the connections
- 4:15Speaker 2: and obviously my military connections as well, and I got
- 4:18Speaker 2: called quite quickly from Victoria, that Rowbridge legion, and after
- 4:22Speaker 2: hearing my story, she invited me to run for them.
- 4:25Speaker 1: So then the kind of reality kicked in, did it?
- 4:28Speaker 1: I thought, Oh my word, I've got to do this. Yeah,
- 4:30Speaker 1: got to get out and do some training. So leading
- 4:32Speaker 1: up to the marathon, did you ever a running program
- 4:36Speaker 1: that you followed or did you just randomly just start
- 4:39Speaker 1: yourself getting fit?
- 4:40Speaker 2: So I think the first thing was part one became
- 4:43Speaker 2: my best friend really is getting miles into my legs
- 4:46Speaker 2: because it's something I hadn't done for quite a while
- 4:48Speaker 2: just kind of see how I fared really, So then
- 4:50Speaker 2: one up to Christmas and just after Christmas it was
- 4:52Speaker 2: just those little try out runs see how I felt.
- 4:54Speaker 2: And then once Christmas passed, I went into the sixteen
- 4:57Speaker 2: week training plan that could to provide through the London
- 5:01Speaker 2: Marathon website and that was for me, that was my
- 5:04Speaker 2: benchmark really to guide me through the trust.
- 5:07Speaker 1: This is interesting. I mean, did that program suit you?
- 5:09Speaker 1: Because what a program for one person might not suit
- 5:13Speaker 1: a program for another person. Did you have a choice
- 5:15Speaker 1: of programs?
- 5:16Speaker 2: No, I just took there was a choice, but I
- 5:18Speaker 2: looked at the various differents and with the bench level
- 5:21Speaker 2: that I felt that I had, I thought there was
- 5:23Speaker 2: an appropriate way to start, and I think I'd dumbed
- 5:25Speaker 2: down a little bit on how far and how fast
- 5:29Speaker 2: I could go. And that's not to say that was
- 5:31Speaker 2: quick at all, but it felt the most suitable program
- 5:34Speaker 2: for me to do. And I think as I founded,
- 5:37Speaker 2: I was going through for me the most important thing
- 5:40Speaker 2: because the two sides is obviously the physical side, but
- 5:43Speaker 2: also the mental side of what you're about to sort
- 5:46Speaker 2: of partake really, and for me it was about it
- 5:49Speaker 2: wasn't just about the miles. It was also about the
- 5:51Speaker 2: time it was going to take me to do it.
- 5:53Speaker 2: So really I did stick to that quite rigidly initially,
- 5:57Speaker 2: and then as time went through I did pick up
- 5:59Speaker 2: a bit and in injury, so it felt more it
- 6:02Speaker 2: was more important rather than than the strength basis. This
- 6:06Speaker 2: was at the time. In hindsight, I think I know
- 6:08Speaker 2: changed things a little bit, but in hindsight it was
- 6:12Speaker 2: more about getting miles into my legs and obviously the
- 6:14Speaker 2: most important rest days and try to guide your way
- 6:17Speaker 2: through that way.
- 6:17Speaker 1: So during that program which you stuck to, I mean,
- 6:21Speaker 1: were you still entering races that kind of suited it
- 6:24Speaker 1: along the way? What was the furthest you run before
- 6:27Speaker 1: the marathon itself?
- 6:28Speaker 2: So I did a half marathon LID back in February,
- 6:33Speaker 2: which for me, I learned so much from doing that
- 6:35Speaker 2: half marathon?
- 6:36Speaker 1: Was that the longest you've ever run at that time?
- 6:38Speaker 2: Yeah? It was so straight away there was a gate
- 6:41Speaker 2: post there. And previous to this, the Furthest I'd run
- 6:44Speaker 2: back in my military days was ten miles in Germany
- 6:48Speaker 2: and that was a very very flat So so LID
- 6:51Speaker 2: I felt for it would be a good gate poster hit.
- 6:53Speaker 2: But also, as I say, more mentally, the thought presses
- 6:56Speaker 2: of how I felt towards the end and with the
- 6:59Speaker 2: confidence to go forward to to London.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Right, And I mean physically after after the LID, how
- 7:06Speaker 1: did you feel with did you have any k nocks,
- 7:07Speaker 1: aches and pains? And you know, did you really think,
- 7:09Speaker 1: oh my word, you know I've not even started yet.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Was a reality a lot of a bit of a
- 7:13Speaker 1: wake up call.
- 7:15Speaker 2: I mean, the lessons that I learned from LID. Certainly
- 7:17Speaker 2: going off way too quickly. I was doing the minute
- 7:21Speaker 2: quicker each kilometer than I wanted to, so straight away,
- 7:25Speaker 2: you know, I kind of felt, right, I really need
- 7:27Speaker 2: to concentrate on pace rather than being quick. It's just
- 7:30Speaker 2: to be consistent at the pace that I wanted to do.
- 7:33Speaker 2: But when I came, when I finished one, I was
- 7:36Speaker 2: quite pleased to finish. Line came in. It did was
- 7:38Speaker 2: I was very tired.
- 7:39Speaker 1: I do remember you coming here actually and I said, oh,
- 7:41Speaker 1: then coming over and work with you. But I think
- 7:43Speaker 1: it was it was absolutely Necker, won't you Yeah?
- 7:45Speaker 2: Yeah, but it was once I got a quick point again,
- 7:48Speaker 2: it's back into my system. I really did feel, actually,
- 7:51Speaker 2: I felt very vigorated by that. The whole thing, and
- 7:55Speaker 2: I was very fortunate really, probably a day or so
- 7:57Speaker 2: recovery and you know, I was back.
- 7:59Speaker 1: So where did you go from there?
- 8:00Speaker 2: Just the back to the program, back to the training. Unfortunately,
- 8:04Speaker 2: it was about a week ten days after LID I
- 8:07Speaker 2: pulled my hamstring, So that was I think I was
- 8:10Speaker 2: very lucky really because if that had happened a week
- 8:12Speaker 2: or two weeks later, that may meant that I would
- 8:15Speaker 2: have missed the marathon. So what that did is I
- 8:18Speaker 2: had about five weeks before the marathon before I get
- 8:21Speaker 2: hit the road again. And so it did affect probably
- 8:26Speaker 2: my training. My last long run probably wasn't as long
- 8:30Speaker 2: as I would have liked it to be. And I
- 8:32Speaker 2: kind of learned the lesson from that from during London.
- 8:35Speaker 1: So leading up to the day, all right, you've done
- 8:37Speaker 1: all the training and you've got a taper. I'll spet
- 8:40Speaker 1: the nerves kicking. Did you stay up there for the weekend?
- 8:43Speaker 2: Yeah? We did, so, me and my life we went
- 8:44Speaker 2: up and stayed on. So I went up on with
- 8:47Speaker 2: Autumn actually on Wednesday for the registration. Oh yeah, and
- 8:51Speaker 2: just that's when the normality hits. Really just so many people,
- 8:55Speaker 2: all the stores and so and so on and forth,
- 8:57Speaker 2: and then we went up on Saturday, we did the
- 9:00Speaker 2: meet and greet with the Roberts Legion at the Expo
- 9:03Speaker 2: Center and started to meet. This was the first time
- 9:06Speaker 2: really i'd met face to face some of the people
- 9:08Speaker 2: that I was going to run with, other than the
- 9:10Speaker 2: other fifty six thousand. Yeah, but you know that was
- 9:13Speaker 2: that was a brilliant It was a really kind of
- 9:15Speaker 2: relaxed me into the whole weekend. Yeah, and we stayed
- 9:18Speaker 2: in Canning Town, so really it was just a short tube.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Did you guys, did you go out for a meal
- 9:23Speaker 1: that night? Did you sleep well? Or no?
- 9:25Speaker 2: My best friend and his wife came down. So we
- 9:27Speaker 2: had a little airbnb in Canningtown and we just ate indoors.
- 9:31Speaker 3: Really.
- 9:31Speaker 2: We had a We had a bottle of wine, of
- 9:33Speaker 2: which the glass was taken away from me after I said,
- 9:36Speaker 2: like that's it. You've had enough now and you need
- 9:38Speaker 2: a good night sleep. So yeah, so we inside, we
- 9:42Speaker 2: just had some pasta and some bits and pieces. Continued
- 9:44Speaker 2: with the car bloading as it were.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Yeah, right, okay, we're going to take a little break
- 9:48Speaker 1: now because this is so interesting. But we've got a
- 9:52Speaker 1: special song coming up now. I want you to tell
- 9:55Speaker 1: us a little bit about this song.
- 9:57Speaker 2: So really my mindset when I'm doing my tra especially
- 10:00Speaker 2: the initial training, is that is to really just concentrate
- 10:04Speaker 2: on the next couple of footsteps in front of you.
- 10:06Speaker 2: And so a song I thought was really apt to
- 10:09Speaker 2: go on one of my my marathon spot list Spotify
- 10:12Speaker 2: was to chase the Pavements.
- 10:14Speaker 1: And so unless I have a little listen to Adele
- 10:17Speaker 1: and chasing Pavements.
- 10:24Speaker 3: I've made up my mind. Don't need to think it over.
- 10:38Speaker 1: That's all there Chasing pavements and work great track for
- 10:41Speaker 1: a song leads nowhere right there chasing pavements. I mean
- 10:49Speaker 1: we were just talking off here. I mean that song there,
- 10:52Speaker 1: would it not make you slow down? And it might
- 10:55Speaker 1: do you a favor actually, instead of like you know,
- 10:58Speaker 1: carrying on and sort of hurting yourself, you might just
- 11:01Speaker 1: play that and have a little wrist Well.
- 11:02Speaker 2: That was one of the things I found from doing
- 11:04Speaker 2: the lid half math and it was going off too quickly,
- 11:06Speaker 2: so I amended my playlist to put some stuff in
- 11:09Speaker 2: that kind of slowed me down. And one of the
- 11:12Speaker 2: things that I found, kind of almost by accident, really
- 11:15Speaker 2: was I started listening to podcasts rather than music whilst
- 11:18Speaker 2: I was training, because that was much more consistent tempo
- 11:22Speaker 2: and I managed and then you could stay for longer
- 11:24Speaker 2: rather than all of a sudden turning into six minute
- 11:27Speaker 2: kilometers when you're kind of looking at eight. So yeah,
- 11:30Speaker 2: it was much more. But again that's part of the
- 11:32Speaker 2: learning curve where you're doing this for the first time.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Yeah, right, okay, so we've got to the point where
- 11:37Speaker 1: you've just had a glass of wine and a bit
- 11:39Speaker 1: past that and getting your head down, so you wake
- 11:42Speaker 1: up the next morning, uh, nervous or what.
- 11:44Speaker 2: I'm not sure that I slept too much the night
- 11:47Speaker 2: before really, so I was awake at silly o'clock.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Really was And what start time were you? Because it
- 11:52Speaker 1: was different zones, wasn't it.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Yeah, So I volunteered for the Green Start this year,
- 11:57Speaker 2: so the whole idea was supposed to be obviously more environmentary. Friends,
- 12:00Speaker 2: we didn't have the bags, et cetera. So I had
- 12:02Speaker 2: an eleven oh three on the Green Start.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Right, and how far were you away a year? Accommodation?
- 12:08Speaker 2: It wasn't particular. So cunning Town is only two stops
- 12:11Speaker 2: on the DLR, so it was it was quite quite
- 12:14Speaker 2: close and we were doing a group picture at nine
- 12:18Speaker 2: o'clock at the top of Greenwich so we were then
- 12:21Speaker 2: plenty of the time and I do remember walking up
- 12:24Speaker 2: quite the steep slope thinking they do realize we're about
- 12:27Speaker 2: to run a marathon and it's exhausted at the time.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, So you run up from the museum up
- 12:33Speaker 1: to the top there, Yeah yeah, yeah.
- 12:35Speaker 2: But I mean in such a wonderful spot and for
- 12:38Speaker 2: those that remember the day, the weather was absolutely stunning,
- 12:41Speaker 2: so we had blue skies, the view over London and
- 12:45Speaker 2: a big group of RBR runners for the teen photo.
- 12:47Speaker 1: It's a good spot because in the years that I've
- 12:50Speaker 1: been up there, the coach normally drops the folks to
- 12:53Speaker 1: athletes off at the top of Greenwich Park there and
- 12:56Speaker 1: as spectators we go the opposite way, go down it know,
- 13:00Speaker 1: and we end up our first our first sort of
- 13:03Speaker 1: port call is the cut his up and that is
- 13:07Speaker 1: about ten k it's about six miles in and at
- 13:10Speaker 1: that time the runners that have been training to run
- 13:13Speaker 1: twenty six miles still very fresh and they are buzzing.
- 13:17Speaker 1: You know, it's electric at the case ark. I must admit,
- 13:20Speaker 1: if you can get anywhere near the front so okay,
- 13:23Speaker 1: so you're in the green start away, you go, did
- 13:26Speaker 1: you go off too fast at the marathon?
- 13:28Speaker 2: So it was I mean, it was probably I'm going
- 13:31Speaker 2: to say that probably one of my favorite parts of
- 13:33Speaker 2: the day really because we there was I think there
- 13:35Speaker 2: was seven of us, i'll be our runners that we
- 13:37Speaker 2: all had the same start time, so we got to
- 13:39Speaker 2: cross the start line all hand in hand al together.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Wow.
- 13:42Speaker 2: So that was a really quite you know, it was
- 13:44Speaker 2: a lovely moment for us to all kind of cross together.
- 13:47Speaker 2: And then we very quickly kind of all settled into
- 13:50Speaker 2: our own, our own tempo. And I was running with
- 13:53Speaker 2: a lady called Sarah, who, ironically, which I only found
- 13:55Speaker 2: out probably about three four miles in, lives in the
- 13:58Speaker 2: same town as my best friend who was also down
- 14:01Speaker 2: to help support us going around. So we were chatting
- 14:05Speaker 2: away as the those first sort of couple of miles
- 14:08Speaker 2: really so and we were very much sort of are
- 14:11Speaker 2: we happy with this tempo?
- 14:12Speaker 1: Is this good?
- 14:13Speaker 3: So?
- 14:14Speaker 2: So yeah, we very quickly set on and the first
- 14:16Speaker 2: couple of miles is nice slope downhill as well really
- 14:19Speaker 2: so yeah. It was very easy to get into the run,
- 14:22Speaker 2: and as I said, I was very mindful of pace.
- 14:24Speaker 1: Really, it is good then if you hooked up initially
- 14:28Speaker 1: with someone the same pace, because if they'd been a
- 14:31Speaker 1: little bit past her and a bit more comfortable, it's
- 14:33Speaker 1: easy to get dragged a lung, especially in the early stages. Yeah,
- 14:36Speaker 1: I certainly know that over the years running with my partner,
- 14:39Speaker 1: so she's just like half a yearld faster than me,
- 14:43Speaker 1: and I always felt that like trying to keep up
- 14:46Speaker 1: with her, you know, whereas when I was running on
- 14:48Speaker 1: my own, I run at my own pace. Okay, So
- 14:52Speaker 1: to take us through some of the memorable moments, if
- 14:55Speaker 1: you like, you know, things like cutty so you know
- 14:58Speaker 1: ten mile half marathon, can you remind us about.
- 15:02Speaker 2: That, well, I think sort of. Firstly is I almost
- 15:05Speaker 2: don't want to spoil the fun really for some of
- 15:07Speaker 2: the for the people that have never run the London
- 15:09Speaker 2: Marathon before. And there's almost I think they call them
- 15:12Speaker 2: easter eggs in films where you have all these little
- 15:14Speaker 2: hidden gems. There's some parts which I don't want to
- 15:17Speaker 2: spoil some of the fun really because literally from the
- 15:20Speaker 2: moment you cross the start line, you smile at all
- 15:23Speaker 2: the silly little things and all the humorous things. What
- 15:26Speaker 2: the crowd do as well. That kind of keep you going,
- 15:29Speaker 2: but by an absolute country mile Cutty Sark, because you
- 15:33Speaker 2: don't see Cutty Sark until you turn according to right,
- 15:37Speaker 2: and then all of a sudden, the wall of noise
- 15:39Speaker 2: just absolutely hits you and you see Cutty Sock. And
- 15:42Speaker 2: as I said, for me, that was the iconic thing
- 15:44Speaker 2: of the London Marathon watching it in the early eighties,
- 15:47Speaker 2: et cetera. But you know, it was all it was
- 15:49Speaker 2: all about the Cutty Sarp. Where they changed the route
- 15:51Speaker 2: a little bit further on, Cutty Sark was always the constant.
- 15:55Speaker 2: So and that's the first place that I knew that
- 15:58Speaker 2: my family were. So as you come around the hairs
- 16:02Speaker 2: on the back, it just absolutely just to stick up
- 16:05Speaker 2: and I saw my family on the left hand side,
- 16:08Speaker 2: and you know, the crowd was sort of five or
- 16:10Speaker 2: sixty and they did manage to get to the front.
- 16:12Speaker 2: And the comedy moment is that my my wife and
- 16:16Speaker 2: her daughters had made these signs and a little bit
- 16:21Speaker 2: of artistic license was taken. It was and I was
- 16:24Speaker 2: taking the mickey, but they've done them in the RBL colors,
- 16:27Speaker 2: so they were very bright and I saw them from
- 16:30Speaker 2: you know, the corner and so straight away, you know,
- 16:33Speaker 2: it kind of ran over and and it was such
- 16:37Speaker 2: an emotional moment. And then a cormost there's all.
- 16:40Speaker 1: It just you.
- 16:41Speaker 2: You're the peaks and troughs of the whole marathon then
- 16:44Speaker 2: starts to come into effect, but certainly cutty Sark and
- 16:47Speaker 2: then that the first half, when you're going through Jamaica
- 16:50Speaker 2: Road through rather Hive, it's you know, it just it
- 16:54Speaker 2: just goes in a bout of an eyelid. It's when
- 16:57Speaker 2: you talk about you know, it's it's eight miles, nine miles,
- 16:59Speaker 2: ten miles. You just don't realize it. And then I mean,
- 17:02Speaker 2: I know South London quite well, so I knew how
- 17:06Speaker 2: close we were getting to sort of Tower Bridge, and
- 17:08Speaker 2: I said to Sarah, I said, do you do you
- 17:09Speaker 2: know where we are? And she goes, no, not really.
- 17:12Speaker 2: I said, well, quarterver mile up that road, you'll see
- 17:15Speaker 2: where we turn left. That's Tower of London. So at
- 17:18Speaker 2: Tower Bridge, So you know, get yourself ready because you
- 17:22Speaker 2: know that's that's when icons that's the iconic moment. Yeah,
- 17:25Speaker 2: So we went up there and so you know, again
- 17:27Speaker 2: we went hand in hand on the first part, and
- 17:30Speaker 2: that's where all the photophals are and you know, and
- 17:32Speaker 2: it was again such an emotional moment, a crossing London Bridge,
- 17:36Speaker 2: Tower of London. It's it was just, you know, incredible.
- 17:41Speaker 1: And so when did it start to you know, hurk,
- 17:46Speaker 1: like did you hit the wall?
- 17:47Speaker 2: So I wouldn't say it was the wall. It was
- 17:51Speaker 2: as as we came off Tower Bridge and turned right
- 17:55Speaker 2: going towards the Isle of Dogs really and that's where
- 17:57Speaker 2: you hit halfway. So first that was I haven't run
- 18:01Speaker 2: as far as this before, so that's the first kind
- 18:04Speaker 2: of like seed that gets sown. Again. As I said earlier,
- 18:07Speaker 2: so much of this is mental as well as physical,
- 18:10Speaker 2: and that that part of the route as well. You
- 18:12Speaker 2: see runners starting to come back the other way and
- 18:15Speaker 2: they've done two yeah, yeah, yeah, And then you're seeing
- 18:19Speaker 2: because again the heat of the day, you're seeing people struggle.
- 18:23Speaker 2: So it gets into your head that I've still got
- 18:26Speaker 2: another ten miles to go, and so you kind of
- 18:29Speaker 2: got to ignore that and focus again you're chasing that
- 18:32Speaker 2: pavement in front of you, you know that those those
- 18:35Speaker 2: the steps, and concentrating on your own run rather than
- 18:38Speaker 2: what other people are doing. And if they're struggling or
- 18:40Speaker 2: if they're looking good. It's it's that part. So, and
- 18:43Speaker 2: I think the next sort of four or five miles
- 18:45Speaker 2: really started to get quite tough. And where I struggled
- 18:50Speaker 2: is I think I overfueled. Everybody talks about getting their
- 18:53Speaker 2: fueling strategy right and obviously all your training runs, et cetera.
- 18:57Speaker 2: I got so worried about the heat of the day
- 18:59Speaker 2: and underfueling that I felt, yeah, so and so this
- 19:05Speaker 2: one does come with a strong wind warning. As I
- 19:07Speaker 2: got towards sort of sixteen seventeen miles, I started to
- 19:11Speaker 2: get cramps in my tommy and I wasn't quite sure
- 19:14Speaker 2: what it was. I wasn't it was nausea whether you know,
- 19:18Speaker 2: but I did need I needed to.
- 19:19Speaker 1: Go and visit a toilet.
- 19:20Speaker 2: So there was quite a big gap between and the
- 19:23Speaker 2: various toys. When I did find a toilet block, literally
- 19:26Speaker 2: was a ten minute wait to get in there. And
- 19:29Speaker 2: then Sarah was in the toilet block next to me,
- 19:32Speaker 2: and as I sat down, and that's when I discovered
- 19:35Speaker 2: it was wind. And I could hear Sarah laughing in
- 19:39Speaker 2: the cubicle next to me. Becaues is that you yeah,
- 19:42Speaker 2: really sorry? But but that was a result from too
- 19:46Speaker 2: many gels too quick really, and I didn't realize this
- 19:49Speaker 2: until after the race, really because I was really quite
- 19:52Speaker 2: concerned as to you know, why is this happened?
- 19:54Speaker 1: Okay, right, well, we're going to play another song now,
- 19:57Speaker 1: and I want you to tell us about this song
- 20:00Speaker 1: and then we can come back to you and you
- 20:03Speaker 1: can tell us about the little bit between the toilet
- 20:06Speaker 1: break and the finishing line that was this song going
- 20:08Speaker 1: to be there.
- 20:09Speaker 2: So this is Queen. So this is my late dad's
- 20:11Speaker 2: favorite band. And again when you talk about inspirations for
- 20:15Speaker 2: getting you around twenty six point two miles, he was
- 20:17Speaker 2: certainly there. So one of his favorite favorite bands. And
- 20:21Speaker 2: again nothing was going to stop me now, and so
- 20:23Speaker 2: don't stop.
- 20:24Speaker 1: There we go. So there we go. What a great
- 20:26Speaker 1: intro for don't stop Me Now.
- 20:29Speaker 3: I'm gonna have myself.
- 20:32Speaker 1: Real good time. I feel alive.
- 20:40Speaker 3: And I will stop you stop.
- 21:09Speaker 1: So Queen, there another great title track, don't stop Me Now.
- 21:17Speaker 1: If you're running a marathon, well, okay, so then you've
- 21:24Speaker 1: come out of the toilet as feeling refreshed and deflated,
- 21:31Speaker 1: I suppose in one respect. So it's off to the start,
- 21:34Speaker 1: off to the finish line. Just runs through that last
- 21:36Speaker 1: little bit.
- 21:37Speaker 2: So I think everybody struggles around Canary Wharf. It's a strange,
- 21:41Speaker 2: strange mood hoover really, but that's where some family members are.
- 21:46Speaker 2: The Canary Wharf there was the last raw British Legion
- 21:49Speaker 2: chair station and really from from therein I knew that
- 21:53Speaker 2: I was finishing. It was that the time was immaterial.
- 21:56Speaker 2: I was just going to really soak in those last
- 21:59Speaker 2: few miles. Really, it was just such an amazing feeling
- 22:02Speaker 2: just listening to the crowd and my snapshot moment really
- 22:05Speaker 2: of the whole day, the one that I'm I will
- 22:07Speaker 2: take away to, you know, the day that I die,
- 22:10Speaker 2: was just passing through Victoria Embankment and I looked to
- 22:13Speaker 2: my left and there was a lady that had her
- 22:15Speaker 2: leg ambutator from the knee down running one of those
- 22:17Speaker 2: those blades. And then to my right there was a
- 22:20Speaker 2: fim undressed in his full rig and you know, the
- 22:23Speaker 2: crowd were going absolutely by me, and I thought, this
- 22:27Speaker 2: is what the day's about. You know, an incredible feeling.
- 22:29Speaker 1: Puts it all in perspective, and yeah, yeah, yeah, if
- 22:32Speaker 1: you forget about your aches and pains when you see
- 22:34Speaker 1: people like that.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, everything else just kind of falls into
- 22:37Speaker 2: insignificant Yeah.
- 22:38Speaker 1: And acrossing the line moment, what about that?
- 22:40Speaker 2: It was It's a really strange feeling because it's the time.
- 22:45Speaker 2: I had no idea what the time was, but it
- 22:47Speaker 2: was such that all I wanted to do was grab
- 22:49Speaker 2: hold of somebody that I knew and give them a cuddle,
- 22:52Speaker 2: you know. And yeah, amazing feeling when it's when you're
- 22:55Speaker 2: seeing you know, everybody around you and from touching going
- 22:59Speaker 2: through the line. You literally presented the medal straight away
- 23:01Speaker 2: and are you okay, yep, thumbs up.
- 23:03Speaker 1: It's so much regular for a picture straight away. Oh
- 23:06Speaker 1: they did? When I did it, you got your medal rights?
- 23:08Speaker 1: Stand there the picture.
- 23:09Speaker 2: Yeah, well they've got to kick the camera above the
- 23:11Speaker 2: finished like that, so you can you download those after
- 23:14Speaker 2: a couple of days, right, But there were people that
- 23:17Speaker 2: were there, but to be honest, I just wanted to
- 23:19Speaker 2: get to see my family.
- 23:20Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, of course. And when did when did you
- 23:22Speaker 1: meet them? Because your goes three.
- 23:24Speaker 2: Yeah, so that was probably the time it took me
- 23:25Speaker 2: to get around was about twenty minutes or sorry to
- 23:27Speaker 2: get up there. So it's quite a long time and
- 23:29Speaker 2: you've almost come off that high from finishing, so you're
- 23:32Speaker 2: coming down. The one thing it does do is as
- 23:34Speaker 2: you meet them, you look as if you haven't run
- 23:37Speaker 2: a marathon. You know, you can't look because if you've
- 23:40Speaker 2: recovered a little bit and your legs a little bit wobbly.
- 23:42Speaker 2: But it was just seeing and Sarah, who'd split up
- 23:46Speaker 2: from me about sort of two throats through the marathon.
- 23:48Speaker 2: She was a bit quicker than I was and had
- 23:50Speaker 2: a bit more legs in her, so having to see
- 23:52Speaker 2: her there as well as well as you know the
- 23:54Speaker 2: rest of my friends and family.
- 23:55Speaker 1: So what was that family moment like when you saw them?
- 23:58Speaker 2: I mean it was just again big caddles, really got
- 24:00Speaker 2: medal drape around my neck and really it was you know,
- 24:04Speaker 2: I found that I had a little bit more pace
- 24:06Speaker 2: in me because I could walk quickly, you know, Dan
- 24:08Speaker 2: horsecars to go and meet them. It was a very
- 24:10Speaker 2: very special moment.
- 24:11Speaker 1: Okay, Now you've been fundraising for the British Legion, Royal
- 24:16Speaker 1: British Legion and you got your charity to place. So
- 24:19Speaker 1: end of the day, how much did you raise?
- 24:21Speaker 2: So I raised two and twenty three pounds, right, So firstly,
- 24:27Speaker 2: I know we can do some thank yous later, but
- 24:29Speaker 2: thank you ever so much for everybody that showed the
- 24:31Speaker 2: support for me and all the bits and pieces that
- 24:33Speaker 2: we did, all the fundraising, the cake baits, et cetera.
- 24:37Speaker 2: Thank you so much for everybody that showed the support
- 24:39Speaker 2: and sponsored me for that.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Yeah question, I think it's time to name drop some
- 24:42Speaker 1: people that you want to absolutely far away.
- 24:44Speaker 2: So firstly, for everybody in the RBO that run with me.
- 24:47Speaker 2: There was one hundred and sixty eight of us I
- 24:49Speaker 2: think there was that run them under mouth from that day.
- 24:51Speaker 2: Some of those were that got ballot places and other
- 24:53Speaker 2: ones we had the charities. But so thank you for
- 24:55Speaker 2: all those that supported us on the chair stations and
- 24:58Speaker 2: everybody that was that part of group. It was a
- 25:00Speaker 2: brilliant and we've stayed in touch. We've all part of
- 25:03Speaker 2: the whatsappen on Facebook, so we're still there. Hopefully we'll
- 25:06Speaker 2: get to do this again very soon. And then my mentors,
- 25:10Speaker 2: Hillary Collins and Autum Richardson for forgetting me into this
- 25:12Speaker 2: in the first place and to give me those wised
- 25:15Speaker 2: words of encouragement, especially in the in the early days.
- 25:18Speaker 2: To the RBR members of Cheriton and mare Hall that's
- 25:20Speaker 2: supported me. Again, thank you so much, those that have donated,
- 25:23Speaker 2: and also the words of wisdom, and then obviously my family,
- 25:27Speaker 2: family and friends, so kind of like Mum and dad
- 25:30Speaker 2: in law, Trevor and av who again the royal connections
- 25:33Speaker 2: to the Rowbritish Legion. We'll just go back for years
- 25:35Speaker 2: and years and years. So my stepdaughter's Ruby and Holly
- 25:38Speaker 2: for all their encouragement along the route, and then to
- 25:41Speaker 2: my best mate Chris and Pammy that came down to support.
- 25:43Speaker 2: And then finally it would be very remiss of me
- 25:46Speaker 2: to say thank you so much to my wife Penny.
- 25:49Speaker 1: The best you left the best rest last, Hello, Penny,
- 25:51Speaker 1: I understand you. Hopefully you're listening there in Canterbury.
- 25:54Speaker 2: She did every sixty four thousand steps with me and
- 25:59Speaker 2: she may not have been there in body, but she
- 26:00Speaker 2: was certainly there in spirit, so I couldn't have done
- 26:02Speaker 2: it without.
- 26:02Speaker 1: Them, right, excellent, Well, Dan, it's been a wonderful journey
- 26:06Speaker 1: right from if you like, from lid when of course
- 26:09Speaker 1: first saw you running, to the interview we did at
- 26:12Speaker 1: the Three Heels, and now hearing it all again now
- 26:15Speaker 1: as you say you've calmed down, you can think about
- 26:18Speaker 1: it constructively. So what happens next to you on the
- 26:21Speaker 1: road again somewhere.
- 26:22Speaker 2: So I'm checking my emails literally ever fourteen seconds for
- 26:25Speaker 2: hopefully a charity place for twenty twenty six really okay,
- 26:30Speaker 2: hopefully for the Royal Bridge Legion. I'd really really like
- 26:32Speaker 2: to do it again. And so I've got some plans
- 26:35Speaker 2: for autumn. I'll go and do the Raw Parks half ye,
- 26:38Speaker 2: then I'd like to do Lydd again, yeah yeah, and
- 26:40Speaker 2: then hopefully building up to the twenty twenty six.
- 26:43Speaker 1: Well, Dennis, thanks you so much for coming in and
- 26:46Speaker 1: I hope that the Den's been an inspiration to some
- 26:48Speaker 1: of your runners out there. That's oh right. It's a
- 26:51Speaker 1: long journey, but you can do it. And if you
- 26:54Speaker 1: get a place in the London Marathon, it's a day
- 26:57Speaker 1: never to forget, isn't it. That's right then, yeah.
- 27:00Speaker 2: A wonderful, wonderful day raw emotion.
- 27:02Speaker 1: Right, Okay, Dan, thank you so much. As I said before,
- 27:05Speaker 1: now I'm going to play this song. And now this
- 27:07Speaker 1: song is more about what's not so much the title
- 27:11Speaker 1: of the song, but more in the name of the group.
- 27:14Speaker 1: And this is just a little fun song for you, Dan.
- 27:17Speaker 1: This is Boogie Wonderland by break windom Fire. Well we're
- 27:37Speaker 1: going to fade that one down a little bit because
- 27:39Speaker 1: it is a very long song. But that was for
- 27:40Speaker 1: Dane had a little bit of trouble on the marathon.
- 27:43Speaker 1: That was break windom fire right, so it starts and
- 27:46Speaker 1: cricket news now at the three Heels. Last week Dartford
- 27:50Speaker 1: won the toss against Folks them first eleven and decided
- 27:53Speaker 1: to bat, making two hundred and twenty eight for eight
- 27:56Speaker 1: in their fifty overs. The Daford bowlers then proved too
- 28:00Speaker 1: strong for Folks, then bowling them out for one hundred
- 28:02Speaker 1: and one runs in just thirty six overs. After four games,
- 28:05Speaker 1: the league tables have started to take shape a bit,
- 28:08Speaker 1: with the Bickley Park unbeaten on top. Folks then are
- 28:11Speaker 1: seventh out of ten clubs. This week it's another home
- 28:15Speaker 1: game as they welcomed second place seven Oaks Lyne Cricket
- 28:18Speaker 1: Club to the three Hills. Hive Cricket Club traveled to
- 28:21Speaker 1: Ash near Sandwich and came home with a six wicket victory.
- 28:25Speaker 1: Ash won the toss and made one hundred and fifty
- 28:27Speaker 1: two for eight and forty overs, but Hythe made the
- 28:30Speaker 1: one hundred and fifty six necessary for four wickets. Top
- 28:34Speaker 1: scorer was wicket keeper and captain Matt Ford with forty five.
- 28:38Speaker 1: This week they welcomed bettsang A Colliery to the Grove.
- 28:42Speaker 1: In the low scoring game. Egerton won the toss and
- 28:45Speaker 1: decided to bat against Hive Green but could only make
- 28:48Speaker 1: sixty all out. The Green then took up the bat
- 28:51Speaker 1: and made sixty two for two, winning the game by
- 28:54Speaker 1: eight wickets. This week the Green are away to Tenidon
- 28:59Speaker 1: Nelson Cricket Club from Thannet were the visitors to Saltwood
- 29:02Speaker 1: in a very close game. Seal Wood won the toss
- 29:04Speaker 1: and decided to bat, making two hundred and nine for nine.
- 29:07Speaker 1: Two players Alex Morrissey and Jack Goodin Are both making
- 29:11Speaker 1: fifty two apiece. However, Nelson were hot on Saltward's heels,
- 29:15Speaker 1: Oliver Cousins taking four wickets for just sixteen runs, but
- 29:19Speaker 1: salt would hang on, bowling Nelson all out for one
- 29:21Speaker 1: hundred and eighty nine, winning the game by just twenty runs.
- 29:25Speaker 1: Sipton Park traveled away to Merzam. They won the toss
- 29:28Speaker 1: and decided to field first, so then Merzam made two
- 29:32Speaker 1: hundred and forty one all out and made two hundred
- 29:35Speaker 1: and forty one all out sorry SIPs. Top scorer on
- 29:39Speaker 1: the day was Tom Carr. He made fifty four, but
- 29:41Speaker 1: they fell sure the target, making one hundred and fifty
- 29:44Speaker 1: six all out, losing the game by eighty five runs.
- 29:47Speaker 1: This week it's the Battle of the Parks as Linton
- 29:50Speaker 1: Park visit Sipton Park for a twelve thirty start. Now,
- 29:54Speaker 1: Hawkins didn't have a game last week, but that might
- 29:57Speaker 1: be because there are an odd number of teams in
- 29:59Speaker 1: there league. So this week they're away to deal Victoria
- 30:02Speaker 1: and Barnes Close and the game starting at one pm. Okay,
- 30:07Speaker 1: so we're going to go on. We've got quite a
- 30:09Speaker 1: bit to do now. About the Hive Bay Triathlon. Last
- 30:13Speaker 1: weekend saw that the Triflon held for its eighth year,
- 30:16Speaker 1: and Max Ramsley from Ashford Tri Club sent me this
- 30:19Speaker 1: report and I shall read it out for you. The
- 30:22Speaker 1: Hive Bay Triathlon, organized by Ashford tri Club, took place
- 30:26Speaker 1: on June the first at Hive Swimming Pool in Kent.
- 30:29Speaker 1: The super Spring Triathlon featured featured a two hundred and
- 30:32Speaker 1: fifth pool swim, a sixteen k bike ride from Hive
- 30:36Speaker 1: to Folks on the Back and a five k run
- 30:38Speaker 1: along the scenic seafront. Sangate and back. One hundred and
- 30:42Speaker 1: twenty four triathletes took part, and the weather was very
- 30:45Speaker 1: kind to them. It was dry a bit windy. Participants
- 30:48Speaker 1: praised the events friendly and relaxed atmosphere, with many highlighting
- 30:51Speaker 1: the supportive, encouraging marshals. The event was noted for being
- 30:55Speaker 1: particularly welcome h to beginners, making it an ideal choice
- 30:59Speaker 1: for first time triathletes. The organization received high marks, with
- 31:04Speaker 1: participants appreciating the well planned course and the dedication of
- 31:08Speaker 1: the volunteers. One precipitant participant described the event as excellent

- 31:18Speaker 1: marshals and volunteers for making their first triathlon a memorable occasion,
- 31:23Speaker 1: calling it a brilliant event, well planned and organized, and
- 31:27Speaker 1: several commented on the fantastic atmosphere perfect for beginners and
- 31:30Speaker 1: sieve seasoned athletes alike. A first time triathlete said the
- 31:35Speaker 1: organizers created a truly special experience, and another remarked that
- 31:40Speaker 1: the event was so enjoyable it was over before they realized,
- 31:43Speaker 1: praising the nice, encouraging, supportive marshals well with an overall
- 31:47Speaker 1: rating of four point nine out of five based on
- 31:50Speaker 1: multiple reviews, the Hive Bay Triathlon was a resounding success.

- 32:09Speaker 1: So for more information and to participant reviews, visit the
- 32:13Speaker 1: Hive Bay Triathlon twenty twenty five event page or learn
- 32:17Speaker 1: more about the club by going to Ashford Triclub dot
- 32:20Speaker 1: co dot uk. So that was Max's report. Thank you
- 32:25Speaker 1: for that, Max Ramsley. And further to that report, I
- 32:28Speaker 1: just want to add that the split actually was eighty
- 32:30Speaker 1: one men and forty three ladies taking part. First mail
- 32:34Speaker 1: home was Jim Bacon in a time of fifty one
- 32:36Speaker 1: minutes forty five seconds and first female was Amy Wimble
- 32:40Speaker 1: in one hour, one minute forty eight seconds. Special mentions
- 32:43Speaker 1: must go to a lady who was guested on my
- 32:45Speaker 1: show Listen to this nearly ten years ago when she
- 32:48Speaker 1: took part in an Ironman competition, which is a two
- 32:52Speaker 1: point four mile swim, one hundred and twelve mile bike
- 32:55Speaker 1: ride and a full twenty six point two mile marathon.
- 32:59Speaker 1: In those ten years, Clara Wood has settled down in
- 33:03Speaker 1: a relationship as three young children, and she's put on
- 33:07Speaker 1: a few extra pounds. Now that are her words, not mine,
- 33:11Speaker 1: but she made a triathlon comeback finishing third lady overall.
- 33:14Speaker 1: So massive world does to you, Clara? Is there another
- 33:18Speaker 1: iron man on the horizon?
- 33:19Speaker 3: Well?
- 33:19Speaker 1: I don't think so. Actually, with three young children to
- 33:22Speaker 1: look after, another special mention must go to a South
- 33:25Speaker 1: Kent Harriet Sean Pilcher. Now, over the last few years
- 33:29Speaker 1: I've got to know Sean and his partner Vicky Sown
- 33:31Speaker 1: at running events, and a little shout out here for
- 33:34Speaker 1: Vicky who's gone from strength to strength since she ran
- 33:37Speaker 1: Race for Life in the memory of her mum.
- 33:39Speaker 3: Well.
- 33:39Speaker 1: I bumped into Sean when he was marshall in an
- 33:41Speaker 1: event a springtime marathon, I think it was in Ashford,
- 33:44Speaker 1: and he told me you needed something extra rather than
- 33:47Speaker 1: just running, So he decided to enter the Hive Bay
- 33:50Speaker 1: event and what a great way to start. Shawn's overall
- 33:54Speaker 1: time was one hour, six minutes, thirty eight seconds. He
- 33:57Speaker 1: finished thirty six overall, showing that he had obviously been
- 34:00Speaker 1: training hard for that day, so well done to you, Sean. Now,
- 34:04Speaker 1: if you've listened to this report and want to have
- 34:05Speaker 1: a go to be fair, there are two very well
- 34:07Speaker 1: established clubs in this area. The Ashford tri Club are
- 34:11Speaker 1: the ones that held the splendid event last Sunday. But
- 34:14Speaker 1: if you live over Dover away you can contact deal
- 34:16Speaker 1: Try Club. Both clubs having Facebook pages and if you're
- 34:20Speaker 1: training for a triathlon, there's a little bit out of
- 34:24Speaker 1: town and just give me a call and we will
- 34:27Speaker 1: spread your story. Okay, back to the music now, I've
- 34:31Speaker 1: still got a bit more to cram in, so let's
- 34:34Speaker 1: have a little listen to Elvis. Okay, time to fade
- 34:46Speaker 1: Elvis out, as I do want to get some of
- 34:48Speaker 1: this stuff and if I can't get it all in,
- 34:50Speaker 1: I will be talking about it on Saturday on Ady's show.
- 34:54Speaker 1: But listen to this one then. Last Sunday me and
- 34:57Speaker 1: missus Ferry's elf early for haste things. I was on
- 35:00Speaker 1: the mic at the Hastings Runners five mile event. The
- 35:03Speaker 1: race started and finished outside the Hastings Town Hall, which
- 35:06Speaker 1: saw a five hundred and twenty nine runners across the
- 35:09Speaker 1: finish line. First mail home was a Wegata Zem from
- 35:12Speaker 1: ashvide See who only last week won the Folkston Coastal ten.
- 35:16Speaker 1: He finished in a time of twenty six minutes and
- 35:18Speaker 1: ten seconds and first lady home was Grace Baker in
- 35:21Speaker 1: twenty nine minutes and three seconds, running for Hastings Athletic Club.
- 35:26Speaker 1: Different club to the host club now. It was nice
- 35:29Speaker 1: to see four runners from Folkston, former guests of the show,
- 35:32Speaker 1: Amy Seeger and Darren Scrivens along with Darren crwe and
- 35:36Speaker 1: his partner Jody Stokes. It was a real buzzy type
- 35:39Speaker 1: venue in the town and special mentions must go to
- 35:41Speaker 1: Ron Huggett, who was wearing a number one as he'd
- 35:44Speaker 1: run all the previous seventeen races, and a big shout
- 35:48Speaker 1: out to Nick Webb. Nick always wears a headband when
- 35:51Speaker 1: he runs and as a Mexican mustache and his nickname
- 35:54Speaker 1: is one one eight, so they gave him the one
- 35:56Speaker 1: one eight number and he kindly donated one hundred d
- 36:00Speaker 1: eighteen pound to the race. All the proceeds of the race,
- 36:03Speaker 1: including his donation, going towards Saint Michael's Hospice. In the
- 36:08Speaker 1: past seventeen years, the Hastings runners have donated seventy thousand
- 36:11Speaker 1: pounds to the hospice and it's a nice gesture from
- 36:14Speaker 1: Nick there. Big congratulations go to all the Hastings runners
- 36:18Speaker 1: who volunteered, plus the guides and the scouts. They were involved.
- 36:22Speaker 1: And we mustn't forget a big shout out to first
- 36:24Speaker 1: time a race director Natasha Slow, who did a magnificent job,
- 36:28Speaker 1: looking very calm all day we're on the outside. She
- 36:31Speaker 1: did well, You've done a great job there, Natasha, So
- 36:34Speaker 1: well done to you, and thank you for Hastings as
- 36:36Speaker 1: Runners for asking me down there on Sunday. Now a
- 36:41Speaker 1: little bit of local stuff now, well, Park run Park
- 36:46Speaker 1: Run this week is off right. Park Run on the
- 36:51Speaker 1: Lee's on Saturday is not happening, So don't go up there.
- 36:54Speaker 1: Please tell your friends if they are going up there.
- 36:57Speaker 1: And the Junior Park run as well, Radne Park Junior
- 37:00Speaker 1: Park Run that's not happening because there's an event in
- 37:04Speaker 1: the middle of the park and the crowd sort of
- 37:07Speaker 1: can't help it. They spill onto the path as the
- 37:09Speaker 1: juniors do run around the path. And I've just been
- 37:12Speaker 1: told by Amy Stimpson, who's say an ambassador a race
- 37:18Speaker 1: director for the Dover Park Run that is not happening either.
- 37:23Speaker 1: I'm not quite sure why. Sometimes they do in roadworks
- 37:25Speaker 1: or there might even be an event on the promenade there.
- 37:28Speaker 1: So don't go to Dover, don't go to Folkstone. But
- 37:31Speaker 1: if you're a tourist, then get out somewhere. There's always
- 37:34Speaker 1: loads of races, but just check before you travel. Okay,
- 37:38Speaker 1: So what we're going to do now, which we're going
- 37:40Speaker 1: to try and squeeze another little bit of music in
- 37:43Speaker 1: and so don't go away. Point nine the sound of
- 37:47Speaker 1: Folkstone Radio Folkstone. Okay, we're going to Beyonce down there
- 38:01Speaker 1: and I will be watching the time, but I do
- 38:02Speaker 1: want to get this in because this is happening on Sunday.
- 38:06Speaker 1: This Sunday sees my favorite race on the calendar, Cancer
- 38:09Speaker 1: Research UK's at a race for Life and there's round
- 38:12Speaker 1: about a thousand people taking part this week. And the
- 38:14Speaker 1: weather looks good the sunny intervals and a moderate bruise
- 38:17Speaker 1: but no rain forecast. Now there's three options, three K,
- 38:22Speaker 1: five K and ten K, all starting at ten thirty,
- 38:25Speaker 1: so be careful about the parking. It's always a bit
- 38:27Speaker 1: dodgy up there by the leaves, so get someone to
- 38:29Speaker 1: drop you off now, I've lost track of how many
- 38:32Speaker 1: years I've been doing this, comparing this event along with
- 38:38Speaker 1: myself and the warm up lady Joe Thompson, we've been
- 38:41Speaker 1: ever present and long may at last. And my guess
- 38:45Speaker 1: is we all know someone that's been touched by cancer
- 38:47Speaker 1: and raising funds is so important to eradicate this awful disease.
- 38:51Speaker 1: It's kind of a happy sad day, you know, especially
- 38:54Speaker 1: if you're running a memory of someone you've recently lost.
- 38:58Speaker 1: But the atmosphere generated just lifts you, you know. So
- 39:03Speaker 1: if you're not running but you want to help, whine
- 39:05Speaker 1: not volunteer, race director Sarah Jane Winding will always find
- 39:09Speaker 1: you a job. You could be marshaling or at the
- 39:12Speaker 1: busy finish line giving out medals and drinks, just helping out.
- 39:15Speaker 1: If you fancy this, then look out for the admin
- 39:17Speaker 1: tent and if you can get up there around about
- 39:20Speaker 1: at nine o'clock and you get signed in, that would
- 39:23Speaker 1: be brilliant. So if you want to take part and
- 39:26Speaker 1: you don't, you don't have to run, of course, don't forget.
- 39:28Speaker 1: You don't have to run. You can walk, you can jog,
- 39:31Speaker 1: you can enter on the day, So get that pink
- 39:35Speaker 1: two two out of the cupboard and that includes you
- 39:37Speaker 1: fellers as well. And I see you there on Sunday
- 39:40Speaker 1: ten thirty. Okay, so we have only got forty odd
- 39:44Speaker 1: seconds left and I haven't had a chance to read
- 39:48Speaker 1: out the folks that in Victor disability result and a
- 39:52Speaker 1: little report, so I'll do that on Saturday. So join
- 39:57Speaker 1: me and Lady Dorks on Saturday when we would do
- 40:01Speaker 1: the Saturday Sports Show. This show kind of takes us
- 40:04Speaker 1: a little bit further out than folks than on Hive
- 40:07Speaker 1: and you know a bit of well not so much
- 40:10Speaker 1: now the Premier League, but anything that's going on sporty
- 40:12Speaker 1: wise in the world really, So tune in Saturday, and
- 40:17Speaker 1: if you want to come on the show, just let
- 40:18Speaker 1: me know, you know, and we can squeeze you in somewhere.
- 40:22Speaker 1: It's a busy ol show, that's for sure. See you
- 40:25Speaker 1: Saturday nine online at Radio Folkston dot com and on
- 40:31Speaker 1: your smart speaker
