- 0:47Welcome in to another exciting episode of the scene.
- 0:50I am your host, Bubba Starts, and with me today is Darian Poe.
- 0:53Welcome to the show.
- 0:54Thank you.
- 0:55I appreciate you having me out.
- 0:56Yeah.
- 0:57A pleasure a pleasure to have you, a lot to get into, I feel like.
- 1:02I'm a vagabond myself, maybe a little less now than I was, ten, fifteen years ago.
- 1:08But, before we get into all of that, I just kinda wanna give you the floor here for a
- 1:12minute and allow you to give us a little bit of your backstory.
- 1:16Yeah.
- 1:17Most definitely.
- 1:18So like I said, my name is Darian Poe.
- 1:21I am a fully independent touring traveling musician.
- 1:27I've been doing it for a handful of years now.
- 1:30Been playing since I was a kid.
- 1:32Started doing live music when I was in high school a little bit, just some open mic nights,
- 1:39and took it on the road about a year and a half, two years ago now.
- 1:43So, yeah, been, been a long road coming.
- 1:48That's awesome.
- 1:51That's awesome.
- 1:52And, obviously, we heard in the intro kinda living the, not quite the van life, but the bus
- 1:57life and traveling around.
- 1:58I know we said Colorado off the top there, but you mentioned that you're down in Arizona now
- 2:04and, hopefully, chasing warmer weather and some gigs at the same time.
- 2:10Yeah.
- 2:10Most definitely.
- 2:12Down in Tucson at the moment, definitely, down here for some more the warmer weather and gigs
- 2:18as well.
- 2:18But, yeah, I've been doing the bus life for about two years now.
- 2:24That's awesome.
- 2:25Well and it goes very well with kind of the, the musician life.
- 2:29Right?
- 2:30That's that most musicians dream of living on the tour bus and going out there, and I'm sure
- 2:36it's not, you know, maybe as glamorous as, you know, Motley Crue in the eighties or Yeah.
- 2:42But it gives us the freedom, right, to kinda chase the dream across the country.
- 2:47And I'm an upper Midwesterner.
- 2:50I live in South Dakota.
- 2:51So for us, you know, summers are full of gigs.
- 2:54All the bars are open.
- 2:55Everybody's got outside stages, and everything's rocking and rolling.
- 2:58But, you know, now moving into, you know, the holiday season, those gigs are all gone, and
- 3:04there's a lot fewer places to play and to do our thing at.
- 3:08So if you're not able to kinda chase those gigs farther south, it becomes hard for some
- 3:14musicians to, continue to play at the pace that they became accustomed to in the warmer months.
- 3:20So I guess kind of, talk a little bit about, you know, these last two years and and what
- 3:27it's been like.
- 3:27Do you have a a route and kind of familiar places that you kind of bounce back and forth
- 3:32from, or is it more of a, you know, a circuit that you're running throughout the year?
- 3:38Yeah.
- 3:38So, kind of the start of it, we my husband and I, we had a house.
- 3:44We bought a house and we got married.
- 3:47And within a month after, getting married, we got back home after our honeymoon.
- 3:52And, I was reading a book.
- 3:56It's a Dave Burrill book that I was reading, and it was like, get on the road, get on the
- 4:00road, get on the road, get on the road.
- 4:02So we got back from our honeymoon, and I was like, hey.
- 4:04I know we just bought this house, but, what if we bought a bus?
- 4:08And he was like, you're absolutely insane.
- 4:10I don't think so.
- 4:12So, a little bit of convincing and a little bit of watching videos and documentaries and stuff
- 4:20kinda showing like, hey.
- 4:21This is what everybody does.
- 4:23Maybe we should try and get it a shot.
- 4:24So, he was pretty convinced, so we bought a bus.
- 4:29We renovated a schoolie.
- 4:31And then, China just he had never we're from he's from St.
- 4:36Louis.
- 4:36I'm from the Falls, Illinois, Southern Illinois.
- 4:40So, really, I've traveled a bunch beforehand, but he never really traveled a bunch.
- 4:46So, Colorado was one of my favorite states that I've ever been to.
- 4:50And, so when we bought the bus, he's like, where are we going?
- 4:53I'm like, well, I'm taking you to Colorado.
- 4:54You're gonna see Colorado for the first time.
- 4:56So we went to Colorado.
- 4:58I did about maybe 30 to 40 shows out there for a summer, and, it was an experience of a
- 5:07lifetime that we figured out that we were not gonna stop it anytime soon.
- 5:13And then, after that, we went to I went back home and ended up recording my second album,
- 5:21Time to Roam, back home with all my buddies and stuff, and then just headed back on the road
- 5:27and went to Florida, and then we got ran out by a hurricane.
- 5:32And then, ended up in Southern Missouri, and then Indiana, and then Ohio and Pittsburgh and
- 5:40Buffalo, New York.
- 5:41And so, I mean, it's kind of there's really no rhyme or reason to any of it.
- 5:45I'm not gonna lie to you.
- 5:46Just trying to get my music out there as much as I can and meet as many people and as many
- 5:51fans as I can.
- 5:53You know, I have TikTok, so I often will post on TikTok of, hey.
- 5:58Out on the road, who wants to like, where do you want me to play?
- 6:01And sometimes it'll be like, oh, well, this place or this place, so we'll go out there.
- 6:06But, a lot of it's kinda based on weather as well.
- 6:09We're just living in a bus full time because, we froze our butts off last winter in
- 6:15Indianapolis, and, I learned the hard way on that one.
- 6:18So now we're in Tucson for the winter.
- 6:20But, yeah.
- 6:22I mean, there's really no rhyme or reason.
- 6:24You know, I have a tour plan that I've been planning for next year that's kinda just
- 6:29sporadic and everywhere.
- 6:30A lot of new cities that we've never been to that just super excited and I don't know.
- 6:35It's it's definitely a journey.
- 6:37I tell you that much.
- 6:39Yeah.
- 6:40Well and and you're very fresh to, you know, not just, you know, like, writing and recording
- 6:45and doing that part, but also to touring.
- 6:48And it's really, it seems like you're someone who just kinda, like, cannonballs into the pool
- 6:53and, like, well, I'll learn how to swim once I'm there.
- 6:55Yeah.
- 6:56For sure.
- 6:56So there there's really no better way to learn it and to build that, you know, consistent
- 7:02touring schedule than to just get out there and do it.
- 7:05Right?
- 7:05I mean, the the Internet's great for kind of finding places that you might want to and
- 7:10reaching out to venues.
- 7:11But if you have a, you know, a little bit of a following on any of these social media, you
- 7:16mentioned your TikTok, obviously, Go where your fans already are.
- 7:19Right?
- 7:19Like, go where you have a few people that will tell their friends locally, hey.
- 7:24Come out and see this.
- 7:25Sometimes better than just kinda like, oh, I wanna go to this city.
- 7:29I don't know anyone, and you get a venue that's like, well, yeah, you can come play here for
- 7:33tips, but you don't know any fans there.
- 7:36That's really not a great model for how to do it either.
- 7:40Right?
- 7:41And I know because I've I've lived to that where I'm just like, oh, I'm gonna show up and
- 7:44people are gonna like me.
- 7:45And, you know, sometimes that can work, but sometimes you fall flat on your face.
- 7:51So Yeah.
- 7:51I really think that you're, you're doing something that not a lot of people have the,
- 7:57the courage to just go out there and do.
- 8:01Yeah.
- 8:01It it, it takes a lot mentally and physically.
- 8:04And, you know, like I said, my husband, thank thankfully for him, he, is very on board with
- 8:10all of it and, pushes me every single day to be the best that I can be, and he helps me out.
- 8:16We drive the bus ourself.
- 8:19So, anywhere that we go, it's either driven by him or myself.
- 8:24And, so, yeah, he helps me set up all my gear if it's if there's not a sound person or
- 8:31anything set up and he does the merge and all that stuff.
- 8:34So it's been a it's a lot of help, but we definitely dove head first into something we
- 8:40had no idea what we were getting ourselves into.
- 8:45I love it.
- 8:46Yeah.
- 8:46And I say courage, but also, like, a little bit crazy too.
- 8:49Right?
- 8:50Absolutely insane.
- 8:53But that's what you see on all the documentaries and all the books.
- 8:56You know?
- 8:56It's like we just had to jump and do it.
- 8:58And if you don't, you never know.
- 9:01And I feel like that was the big thing that he did that that he said of, like, well, maybe
- 9:05this is crazy.
- 9:06And he's like, maybe it is crazy, but, you know, if we don't try, you know, so it's
- 9:11definitely, yeah.
- 9:13It's been something.
- 9:15There's a very pedestrian, like, life waiting for all of us if we want that.
- 9:20And Yeah.
- 9:21I read Jack Kerouac's On the Road when I was 18, and I was like, wait.
- 9:25You could just, like, go hitchhike around and do that?
- 9:28I'm like, I'd much rather just go do that.
- 9:30And I threw a guitar on my back and got to go see the whole West Coast and spent three years
- 9:35out there and, you know, kind of did a lot of the same things.
- 9:39Right?
- 9:39I didn't have a bus, but I was like, man, I'm just gonna go out and see it.
- 9:42And there wasn't anything standing in my way.
- 9:45Now, obviously, I have kids at home and my life is different.
- 9:49But just as much, like, I I put forty, fifty thousand miles on my Suburban this year driving
- 9:56from you know, I I toured and played shows anywhere from Duluth, Minnesota down to Austin,
- 10:02Texas, from Chicago all the way to the Rocky Mountains.
- 10:05Right?
- 10:05So, like, I I, in some sense, embody that.
- 10:09I'm not necessarily living, although I did kinda live in the suburban for the summer
- 10:13months.
- 10:14That's not a full time schedule for me, but you gotta be a little crazy even to do that.
- 10:18I mean, sleeping in rest areas when you could and and just staying on the move.
- 10:22But that's what it takes, and I and I don't think that you're wrong in just getting out
- 10:27there and doing it, meeting people, building out this thing.
- 10:31And now you're much better poised to have what maybe looks like a little more, you know,
- 10:37planned out tour for next summer and things that you wanna do, people that you're gonna go
- 10:42out and see, places that you're going to play.
- 10:45And and eventually, the plan kind of unfolds before you if you're willing to step out there.
- 10:51Yeah.
- 10:52Yeah.
- 10:53It's definitely I mean, it's doable, but it's like you said, it's
- 10:57Oh, it's not for everybody.
- 10:58No.
- 10:59It's not for everybody.
- 11:00It's I remember when we so we left for Colorado.
- 11:04It was March of of two years ago.
- 11:06March.
- 11:07Almost two years now.
- 11:08March.
- 11:08And leaving from Southern Illinois, St.
- 11:11Louis area, the center we got to Kansas City, and we were like, okay.
- 11:17We're gonna spend the night in Kansas City, so we were at a KOA.
- 11:20And then we woke up the next morning and we ended up in Wikini, Kansas, which it has
- 11:24another KOA, and it's in the middle of absolutely nowhere.
- 11:27And, we pulled up to the gas station to get diesel before we parked for the night.
- 11:34And when we pulled up, the bus was screeching.
- 11:38And, got it over to the KOA, and it had two broken pulleys, the belt was ripped, and a
- 11:45bunch of other stuff.
- 11:45And we were like, what in the absolute world are we getting ourselves into?
- 11:50We just sold our house.
- 11:51We just left everything we knew behind, and it's, it's a lot.
- 11:55And it's it's a lot of things, like you said, that people don't really realize or think
- 11:59about, but it's I don't know.
- 12:01It's it's some it's a very interesting lifestyle, and I just keep saying that.
- 12:05But I feel like that's what I tell everybody.
- 12:07They're like, what do you think of it?
- 12:08I'm like, you kinda just gotta live it to understand it.
- 12:12No doubt.
- 12:13Right?
- 12:13And that's where the songs come from a lot of times are are those moments, you know, being
- 12:17broke down in the middle of Kansas, you know, two days into your trip when you just left the
- 12:23whole world that you knew behind.
- 12:26But those are the moments that really, like they make or break people.
- 12:30And I feel, if it if it breaks you, you most people always have something to go back to.
- 12:36You can you can always go back home and, like, go get a job, and it it's very easy to find
- 12:42that life wherever you happen to land.
- 12:45But it's the path less traveled is where the stories are and where, you know, people are
- 12:51inspired by.
- 12:53Right?
- 12:53Like, nobody necessarily wants to hear a song about white picket fences and the you're going
- 12:59to work at your nine to five every day.
- 13:01Right?
- 13:01Like Yeah.
- 13:02That's not what inspires people because they live that life every day.
- 13:06They wanna hear stories about the cowboys and, you know, the the the travelers and the people
- 13:12who are willing to chase a dream.
- 13:14Those are the stories that inspire people.
- 13:16So I'm very thankful that you read that, Dave Grohl book when you did.
- 13:21Yeah.
- 13:22Me too.
- 13:24Well, it feels like that you have your own book in the making here.
- 13:28Maybe if you're not writing it already, that, one will definitely be in your future.
- 13:34Yeah.
- 13:34Most definitely.
- 13:35Crazy enough, my husband actually just started, jotting down the last couple of months because
- 13:41I was like, man, this is this is gonna be, like, history in the making one day, hopefully.
- 13:45And he's like, okay.
- 13:47He's like, well, we've done so much and we've been so many places in the last two years.
- 13:51Maybe I should start jotting this stuff down.
- 13:53So he actually is starting a, like, a bus journey book from the very beginning, so we'll
- 14:00see how it goes.
- 14:02Very cool.
- 14:03Yeah.
- 14:03Well and now it gives him some kind you know, a lot of ways, obviously, he's living that bus
- 14:09life with you.
- 14:10But he's kinda like just, you know, following along on your journey where now writing it and
- 14:15collecting it on his own gives him a little bit more investment in the journey and everything
- 14:20itself.
- 14:21Yeah.
- 14:21And it's cool to see his viewpoint of it as well because I feel like the book that's what I
- 14:25told him.
- 14:25He's like, well, you can put some stuff in.
- 14:27I was like, well, I'll give you ideas of, like, if things that we that were forgotten or
- 14:32something because we've done a million things since then.
- 14:34But I was like, I kinda want a premier viewpoint because, I don't know, it's very cool
- 14:39to I've I've read a couple pages of it so far, and it's it's a viewpoint that I have not seen
- 14:44yet that I'm very intrigued for everybody else to read one day.
- 14:49Right.
- 14:50I and I was thinking the same thing where, you know, from the, you know, the bus driver roadie
- 14:55perspective almost.
- 14:57Right?
- 14:57Exactly.
- 14:59It's a it's a different light, especially from us because we don't know that light.
- 15:03You know?
- 15:04I'm a songwriter myself, so I know it from the stage.
- 15:07I know it from this.
- 15:08And now being kind of, like, you know, the media, right, and having that where I'm talking
- 15:13to a lot of artists, but I still see it from I'm seeing it from your perspective.
- 15:17I'm not necessarily looking at it from a, you know, from a media person's perspective.
- 15:24Even when I'm on the red carpet at the Josie's or something, I'm talking to people because
- 15:29they're like, I know I know a little bit of your story just intrinsically from being an
- 15:34artist myself.
- 15:35I I know what it's like to kinda ride the highs and lows of an artist's career, and it's not
- 15:40necessarily from a a a necessarily different viewpoint.
- 15:44It's it's slightly different, but I'm trying to tell the story of a million artists from the
- 15:49artist's perspective where, yeah, his viewpoint and perspective on everything are completely
- 15:54different.
- 15:55Not being is he a musician at all or just kind of very yeah.
- 16:00So it's completely different.
- 16:02Yeah.
- 16:02He's definitely very music based.
- 16:07It's kinda how we met.
- 16:08Very we went to a million concerts, and we still go to a million concerts and stuff.
- 16:12So, I don't know.
- 16:15It's something we joke about often.
- 16:17It's like, you love the musicians and you looked up to all these people.
- 16:20It's like, I never would have thought that, like and either of us would have been doing
- 16:25this, you know, down the road.
- 16:27We've only been together for about seven years now, but it's it's still crazy to think that,
- 16:31like, I was 20 and he was 21 of, like, where we're at now.
- 16:36We would have never pictured this in a million years, but couldn't be any more grateful for
- 16:40it.
- 16:41But yeah.
- 16:43That's so awesome.
- 16:44Well, I'm sure you got a million things to do on the bus, so I don't wanna keep you forever.
- 16:49You're fine.
- 16:50And tell everybody where they can find all your stuff and learn more about you, the bus life,
- 16:55and your music too.
- 16:57So you can find me on darianpo.com.
- 17:02That is my website.
- 17:03It's got everything on it.
- 17:04You can also find me on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, pretty much anywhere you can stream
- 17:10music.
- 17:11I have three albums out currently.
- 17:14You can find me on TikTok under Darian Poe Music, Instagram, Facebook, all that fun stuff.
- 17:20Nothing too wild or crazy.
- 17:23Awesome.
- 17:23Well, Darian, thank you so much for coming on and sharing your story today.
- 17:28I've been absolutely, enthralled by it.
- 17:30I love the adventurers in this life, and thank you for being part of the scene.
- 17:36Yeah.
- 17:36Most definitely.
- 17:37I appreciate you having me on.
