0:07
Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Schreeger as a production of the
0:09
Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. What's Up, Everybody, Welcome back
0:25
Speaker 1: to the season with Peter Schreger. The last time we
0:28
Speaker 1: did this podcast was at the Super Bowl in Arizona,
0:33
Speaker 1: and it has been multiple months and multiple things have happened,
0:36
Speaker 1: obviously in the football world, but also on a personal note,
0:41
Speaker 1: I am a father of a new baby girl. This
0:45
Speaker 1: was the big reason why I have not been on
0:47
Speaker 1: the podcast the last few weeks, and I was on
0:49
Speaker 1: paternity leave and not on Good Morning Football. In the
0:52
Speaker 1: story is of course intertwined with the football and draft
0:57
Speaker 1: and everything. So I'm at the Combine and it is
1:00
Speaker 1: the Friday night of the Combine and the we're previewing
1:07
Speaker 1: the next day. All right, We're previewing the next day,
1:09
Speaker 1: and it comes to me and I'm talking about Will Levis,
1:13
Speaker 1: the Kentucky quarterback. And I'm going into a real deep
1:15
Speaker 1: dive on Will Levis about how in twenty twenty one
1:18
Speaker 1: he had an offensive coordinator at Kentucky named Liam Cohen,
1:22
Speaker 1: and Liam Cohen was then poached by the Los Angeles
1:25
Speaker 1: Rams to be their offensive coordinator in twenty twenty two,
1:28
Speaker 1: based on the job he did at Kentucky in his
1:30
Speaker 1: familiarity with McVeagh from a previous part of his career.
1:33
Speaker 1: With the Rams going deep on Liam Cohen talk about
1:36
Speaker 1: Will live at Levis and my wife, who knows I'm
1:39
Speaker 1: on TV, who knows I am fully engaged, and it's
1:45
Speaker 1: hard enough to spit out stats and knowledge on Will
1:48
Speaker 1: Levis on a Friday night in February is texting me
1:52
Speaker 1: call me back a sap. Call me back, a sap,
1:54
Speaker 1: Call me back a sap. All right, I'm about to
1:58
Speaker 1: as were as I'm about to get to my phone,
2:00
Speaker 1: Daniel Jeremiah starts listing off teams that might make sense
2:05
Speaker 1: for a quarterback to be elected, and in my ear
2:07
Speaker 1: Mark Teitelman, who's the producer of the combine, says, shregs,
2:11
Speaker 1: we're gonna come to you. Just give us another team.
2:13
Speaker 1: And I'm like frozen, paralyzed. I don't know what my
2:16
Speaker 1: wife is calling about. I have no idea. Obviously, I
2:19
Speaker 1: know what baby's on the way at some point, but
2:20
Speaker 1: this is not when we were expecting it. It's early,
2:23
Speaker 1: and I just get on camera and I just say, yeah, look,
2:27
Speaker 1: I don't know what the deal is with Lamar Jackson
2:29
Speaker 1: and the Ravens. I would think that the Ravens have
2:31
Speaker 1: to put contingency plans on. And it's late February, but
2:36
Speaker 1: I would think that the Ravens are going to do
2:37
Speaker 1: all their due diligence on quarterbacks. Okay, go to commercial.
2:41
Speaker 1: Call my wife. She's like, you gotta get home. This
2:44
Speaker 1: thing is happening. All right, we're a couple weeks before
2:47
Speaker 1: we thought we would be. I'm all and I'm looking
2:50
Speaker 1: at my Twitter and it's blowing up and I've got
2:51
Speaker 1: a million mentions. I'm like, what just happened? What did
2:54
Speaker 1: I do? And they clipped off the clip of me
2:58
Speaker 1: saying that the Ravens are going to be looking at
3:00
Speaker 1: quarterbacks or should be looking at quarterbacks, and that went
3:03
Speaker 1: like wildfire. And I swear it was before Lamar did
3:08
Speaker 1: a trade request. It was before Lamar in the franchise tag,
3:12
Speaker 1: it was before all the Lamar stuff. It was when
3:14
Speaker 1: everyone thought Lamar was gonna be just fine and dandy,
3:17
Speaker 1: and I just merely mentioned they might take a quarterback.
3:20
Speaker 1: But it went like wildfire on Twitter, and I'm like,
3:22
Speaker 1: I can't pay attention to that. Get home, and it
3:25
Speaker 1: was a false alarm in that moment, but three days later,
3:29
Speaker 1: our daughter was born. Her name is Betty Hazel. She
3:34
Speaker 1: was born on March ninth, twenty twenty three. We are
3:38
Speaker 1: so happy my son, Mel and Betty are all good.
3:42
Speaker 1: The NFL network was cool enough to give me a
3:45
Speaker 1: few weeks of paternity leave, which was important because my
3:49
Speaker 1: son was also off on spring break for two weeks
3:52
Speaker 1: and someone needs to entertain a six and a half
3:54
Speaker 1: year old while my wife, Erica is with our baby daughter.
3:58
Speaker 1: But I am back on air on Good Morning Football,
4:00
Speaker 1: and I'm happy to announce we are bringing back this
4:03
Speaker 1: season with Peter Schrager. It did not die at the
4:05
Speaker 1: Super Bowl is going to be alive and we're going
4:07
Speaker 1: to start going into high gear. I missed the entire
4:11
Speaker 1: free agency window, and I apologize to the listeners for that.
4:15
Speaker 1: Obviously I had other things going on. But we are
4:17
Speaker 1: now a couple of weeks from draft, and I assure
4:21
Speaker 1: you this is my sweet time and my time where
4:25
Speaker 1: I like to hit home runs and keep you guys engaged.
4:28
Speaker 1: I'll have more information than most I will share it
4:30
Speaker 1: here on the podcast. I'll try to give you different
4:33
Speaker 1: information than what you're getting on Good Morning Football, fresher, different,
4:37
Speaker 1: more guests, all of that stuff. But I also feel
4:40
Speaker 1: like I have a lot to catch up on with
4:42
Speaker 1: the guys here in the room. We've got Aaron wang Kaufman,
4:46
Speaker 1: my lovely producer and friend. We've got Jason English from iHeart,
4:50
Speaker 1: who's in the building as well. Aaron, how are you?
4:53
Speaker 1: Did you miss me? And what did I miss? Oh?
4:56
Speaker 1: I'm great, of course I missed you. Yeah, And I
4:58
Speaker 1: feel particularly bad that, unfortunately I didn't get to make
5:01
Speaker 1: it the super Bowl this year to record with you,
5:03
Speaker 1: because you know, day before I left tested positive for COVID,
5:07
Speaker 1: so then I was not able to make it out
5:09
Speaker 1: there and do the and do the recording. So I
5:11
Speaker 1: haven't seen you in even longer than that. I know,
5:14
Speaker 1: I know when I got that, Cause like that's so
5:16
Speaker 1: finning that It's just we're gonna have this great way
5:18
Speaker 1: to these plans of doing these you know, the great
5:20
Speaker 1: Arizona hang Session and this whole thing. We're gonna bring
5:23
Speaker 1: Brooklyn to Arizona, and then naturally COVID hits as it
5:28
Speaker 1: always does. Um and you were not there, but Jason was.
5:31
Speaker 1: We had a great two podcasts there, but the NFL
5:35
Speaker 1: world keeps on spinning. Um, let's do what we do.
5:38
Speaker 1: Let's go through five topics. You serve me up. You
5:42
Speaker 1: tell me what you want to hear on and I'll
5:44
Speaker 1: give you and I'll empty the bag on what I got.
5:46
Speaker 1: And guys, if you're listening, it's good to be back
5:48
Speaker 1: on the mics. I'm excited about this. Aaron. Let's go
5:52
Speaker 1: all right. Well, first up, I mean, I know you
5:54
Speaker 1: said you missed part of free agency, but there's still
5:57
Speaker 1: some big things happening, namely Aaron Rodgers the Jets. What's happening?
6:02
Speaker 1: Where do we stand with this? Where do we start? Okay,
6:04
Speaker 1: so it's April eleventh as we record this, I'm gonna
6:08
Speaker 1: go all the way back to that week of March sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth,
6:14
Speaker 1: because that's when the Jets brass got the okay to
6:18
Speaker 1: travel out to Malibu. Now, let me take you through this.
6:21
Speaker 1: This hasn't been detailed as as much in depth as
6:23
Speaker 1: maybe it should have been. Here's how it works. They
6:26
Speaker 1: get the approval to be able to speak to Rogers.
6:29
Speaker 1: Rogers gets out of his three four day, five day
6:33
Speaker 1: darkness retreat, and you can roll your eyes if you
6:35
Speaker 1: want it is what it is. That's what he did.
6:38
Speaker 1: He says he wants to meet with the Jets. The
6:40
Speaker 1: crew that traveled out to Malibu are the following head
6:45
Speaker 1: coach Robert Sala, general manager Joe Douglas, team president himI
6:51
Speaker 1: el High, Jets offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, one team owner
6:57
Speaker 1: Woody Johnson, another team owner Christopher Johnson. And you had
7:02
Speaker 1: three different factions coming from three different places. So you
7:05
Speaker 1: had Woody Johnson coming from Florida, you had Christopher Johnson
7:09
Speaker 1: coming from Colorado, and you had all the other guys
7:12
Speaker 1: coming from Jersey. They all fly in and yes, there
7:15
Speaker 1: were cars parked outside of Rogers's house, and that made
7:19
Speaker 1: a lot of news that the Jets would park in
7:21
Speaker 1: front of his house. Who cares. Now it's thirty one
7:23
Speaker 1: days later and he's still not a Jet, so none
7:25
Speaker 1: of that matters. But yes, paparazzi picked up photos of
7:28
Speaker 1: Woody exiting Rogers's house and Sala exiting rogers house. And
7:33
Speaker 1: I'm told it was a four hour hang session for
7:37
Speaker 1: most of them where Rogers hosted them. They all talked,
7:40
Speaker 1: they all walked around his house, They talked about philosophy,
7:43
Speaker 1: they talked about life. They talked about the team. Did
7:46
Speaker 1: Rogers demand they picked players, No, but they were asking
7:50
Speaker 1: him about certain players and his thoughts and he was
7:52
Speaker 1: offering his feedback. Now as they exit, there's this feeling
7:56
Speaker 1: of great optimism from everybody involved that this thing is
7:59
Speaker 1: going to get done. The Jets brass flies back to
8:03
Speaker 1: New Jersey. They're sitting in there waiting, and then Roger
8:06
Speaker 1: decides in a couple of days he's going to go
8:08
Speaker 1: on the Pat McAfee show. The McAfee interview I thought
8:12
Speaker 1: was compelling. I also think Rogers and the Jets were
8:17
Speaker 1: done no favors by some of the things that were said.
8:20
Speaker 1: And I'm not blaming Rogers here. He was speaking to
8:22
Speaker 1: his truth. He was talking what he wanted to say.
8:25
Speaker 1: But I can tell you from sources around the league
8:28
Speaker 1: that when Rogers was going through all his gratitude mentions
8:31
Speaker 1: of mentioning you know, here we go. Bob Harlan was
8:35
Speaker 1: the president of the Packers when I was drafted, and
8:38
Speaker 1: Bob was a great guy. And this and that Mark Murphy,
8:40
Speaker 1: the president of the Packers since two thousand and seven,
8:43
Speaker 1: does not get a special shout out. He goes through
8:45
Speaker 1: Ted Thompson, the late great Ted Thompson, who was the
8:48
Speaker 1: evaluator of talent, who really put his name on Rogers instead,
8:51
Speaker 1: it's time to move on far If he talks about
8:53
Speaker 1: Ted Thompson quite a bit. No mention of Brian guten Kunz,
8:57
Speaker 1: who's the current general manager. Now you could say, who
8:59
Speaker 1: cares if he's not mentioned. When you're talking about the
9:01
Speaker 1: equipment guys and members of the cafeteria, and you're talking
9:06
Speaker 1: about all the coaches and all, and you start not
9:09
Speaker 1: mentioning it. There's no reason that the Packers guys that
9:13
Speaker 1: were gonna suddenly give Aaron Rodgers away for sixty cents
9:17
Speaker 1: on the dollars. So they're staying firm on what they
9:19
Speaker 1: think they need, which, to be honest, Aaron, as I'm
9:22
Speaker 1: doing this conversation with you, I don't know the specifics
9:25
Speaker 1: on that. I was told from people not in either
9:30
Speaker 1: building that the Jets we're looking to make a trade
9:37
Speaker 1: where it would not involve the first round pick, it
9:40
Speaker 1: would not involve both of the second round picks, and
9:43
Speaker 1: it would involve a future first that was conditional, meaning
9:49
Speaker 1: we gotta get something out of Rogers. We can't just
9:51
Speaker 1: get one gear or a commitment to one season, there's
9:55
Speaker 1: got to be some sort of multiple season commitment in
9:58
Speaker 1: which a first round pick is then triggered. If that
10:02
Speaker 1: two years or one and a half years, or whatever
10:05
Speaker 1: the starts that are required, it is not hit, then
10:07
Speaker 1: it remains a second or third round pick, whatever it is. Packers, meanwhile,
10:11
Speaker 1: are just like, well, we've got Rogers under contract already.
10:14
Speaker 1: We agreed to one of the biggest contracts in NFL
10:17
Speaker 1: history with him less than thirteen months ago, and we've
10:20
Speaker 1: got Jordan Love playing on a rookie contract. Still, we're
10:23
Speaker 1: gonna stay and stand tight here. It's now April eleventh.
10:27
Speaker 1: Joe Douglass was on a local thing with Boomer and
10:30
Speaker 1: Geo in Jersey City on Friday, in which he said,
10:33
Speaker 1: like he'll be here, like Rodgers will be here. I
10:36
Speaker 1: think everyone on both sides as the assumption that Aaron
10:41
Speaker 1: Rodgers will not be a Packer and Aaron Rodgers will
10:43
Speaker 1: be a New York Jets quarterback. But at some point
10:46
Speaker 1: that trade needs to be executed, and then there's different
10:48
Speaker 1: contract things that trigger. As we sit here on April eleventh,
10:53
Speaker 1: I don't think we're any closer to either team giving
10:55
Speaker 1: an inch on this now. If the Packers want a
10:58
Speaker 1: first round pick, the Jets are steadfast and saying we're
11:00
Speaker 1: not giving up a first round pick. If the Packers
11:02
Speaker 1: want two second round picks, the Jets seem to be
11:04
Speaker 1: steadfast and saying we're not giving up two second round picks. Aaron,
11:08
Speaker 1: as I lay that all out to you, and this
11:10
Speaker 1: conversation has been going on for days in the New
11:12
Speaker 1: York media and also Green Bay media and also on Twitter.
11:15
Speaker 1: Who holds the leverage in that situation. The guys who
11:18
Speaker 1: have Rogers, who obviously wants to move on and said
11:22
Speaker 1: he walked into that darkness retreat ninety percent sure he
11:26
Speaker 1: was going to retire, or the Jets, who in this
11:30
Speaker 1: case know that Rogers doesn't want to be there in
11:33
Speaker 1: the Packers don't want Rogers there. Who has the leverage?
11:35
Speaker 1: And if you're to pick, which side is going to
11:39
Speaker 1: be the one that's gonna bend in the end, I
11:41
Speaker 1: think whoever you ask is the one that has the leverage.
11:43
Speaker 1: When he asked someone from the Jets, they have the leverage.
11:46
Speaker 1: If he asked someone from the Packers, they have the leverage.
11:48
Speaker 1: Because I mean, neither one, like you said, neither one
11:54
Speaker 1: is thinking there's a different outcome. It's just a matter
11:57
Speaker 1: of like, how do they get to this compromise of
11:59
Speaker 1: what the picks are? And I think both of them
12:01
Speaker 1: think the other one will bend first. I thought the
12:04
Speaker 1: New York media would play a far bigger role in this.
12:06
Speaker 1: They haven't. I thought every day on the back page,
12:09
Speaker 1: it would be Joe Douglas with a clock and it's
12:11
Speaker 1: say times tick and get this done, Get this done,
12:13
Speaker 1: Get this done. But I feel like rational minds have
12:16
Speaker 1: existed in the New York media on this thing, or
12:18
Speaker 1: they've just been distracted with Mets, Yankees, Giants, nixt sets
12:23
Speaker 1: like you know, Rangers, Islanders that Joe Douglas hasn't been
12:26
Speaker 1: put through the crucible on this because I think at
12:27
Speaker 1: a certain point, if the New York media was banging,
12:29
Speaker 1: bang and bang and banging every single day, why is
12:32
Speaker 1: this trade not done? Why is this trade not done?
12:34
Speaker 1: Why is this trade not done? Why is this trade
12:35
Speaker 1: not done? Joe go Douglas would say, Okay, look, it
12:38
Speaker 1: certainly doesn't make the most football sense to give up
12:40
Speaker 1: the thirteenth overall pick for a forty year old quarterback
12:42
Speaker 1: and all the stuff, But let's just get it done.
12:44
Speaker 1: Let's get Aaron Rodgers in the building. Let's start this thing.
12:46
Speaker 1: He hasn't done that yet. I think the New York
12:48
Speaker 1: media has been pretty kind to the Jets and the
12:50
Speaker 1: Jets brass, because if I'm looking at it now from
12:53
Speaker 1: thirty thousand feet, how do you get on that plane
12:55
Speaker 1: to Malibu? How do you accord him? How do you
12:57
Speaker 1: let all of your intentions be known? And how do
13:00
Speaker 1: you not have that deal in place beforehand? To me,
13:03
Speaker 1: that's the crazy part to it, that the intentions were
13:06
Speaker 1: all made. You give up all your cards in this thing.
13:08
Speaker 1: You show your cards that you're all in on Rodgers.
13:10
Speaker 1: You're not gonna sign car, You're not gonna trade for
13:12
Speaker 1: a little more, You're not gonna do any of that stuff.
13:14
Speaker 1: And yet April eleventh, Rodgers is still not a New
13:17
Speaker 1: York Jet, and I don't feel like it's gonna get
13:19
Speaker 1: done until oh, I don't know, either draft day or
13:23
Speaker 1: maybe even after the draft. I think both sides know
13:25
Speaker 1: the ultimate conclusion is is that Rogers is going to
13:30
Speaker 1: be a Jet. But like the second that draft starts,
13:35
Speaker 1: it's on the clock really for that trade, and the
13:36
Speaker 1: second it ends, like I don't know, the Jets lose,
13:41
Speaker 1: or the Packers like just missed an entire year of
13:44
Speaker 1: a draft where they could have picked up players that
13:45
Speaker 1: could help. So I think the timing of the draft
13:48
Speaker 1: being in two weeks is like puts pressure on the
13:50
Speaker 1: Packers to make that trade so they get something in
13:52
Speaker 1: return now, but without an owner, without anyone banging the
13:56
Speaker 1: drum there to be like get it done. I don't
13:58
Speaker 1: see the Packers having any urgency either, all right, from
14:01
Speaker 1: one quarterback to another, we have I think the last
14:05
Speaker 1: time that we were on, we were talking about Obj
14:07
Speaker 1: deals and he finally signs with the Ravens for like
14:11
Speaker 1: a little more than fifteen million, and immediately Lamar releases
14:15
Speaker 1: the FaceTime photo of he and ob j facetiming, and
14:19
Speaker 1: then this weekend they're hanging out in Miami together. What
14:22
Speaker 1: do you what? What does this mean for the Lamar
14:25
Speaker 1: Ravens deal? What's this mean? Just in general with Baltimore.
14:30
Speaker 1: I wish I could give you an answer on Lamar Jackson,
14:33
Speaker 1: and I even sit on the show on Monday that like,
14:36
Speaker 1: I don't think Odell signs with the Ravens without knowing
14:40
Speaker 1: or having some sort of assurance that Lamar Jackson is
14:42
Speaker 1: throwing him passes. But if anybody in the media is
14:46
Speaker 1: trying to pose as like a voice of Lamar or
14:49
Speaker 1: give you some insight on Lamar, they're full of shit.
14:53
Speaker 1: The raven side, they don't give much secrets out either.
14:56
Speaker 1: I think from their angle on this thing, they've offered
14:59
Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson multiple contracts that they think is is fair.
15:03
Speaker 1: He has rebuffed them over the course of two years
15:06
Speaker 1: with those multiple offers, and he's betting on himself a
15:10
Speaker 1: little bit and saying, I think that there's more money
15:13
Speaker 1: out there for me. And from what everyone says that
15:15
Speaker 1: the Shawn Watson contract last year that was two hundred
15:18
Speaker 1: forty million dollars guaranteed really was the trigger and all
15:21
Speaker 1: of this, and that Lamar is look at that in
15:24
Speaker 1: the number, Well he's not getting that number. It's not
15:26
Speaker 1: going to get that number from the Ravens at least.
15:28
Speaker 1: So again with the Rogers, the thing time about who
15:31
Speaker 1: has to compromise, who has to bend. From a strictly
15:34
Speaker 1: on paper way of analyzing this, you say, all right,
15:40
Speaker 1: the Ravens have offered you multiple deals. The Ravens have
15:43
Speaker 1: offered to make you one of the highest paid quarterbacks
15:44
Speaker 1: in the league. The Ravens want to tell you that
15:46
Speaker 1: they're your guy. The Ravens have publicly said they're two
15:49
Speaker 1: hundred percent behind you. The Ravens blood the audit. The
15:52
Speaker 1: Ravens have then changed the offensive coordinator, which seemed to
15:55
Speaker 1: be a problem with the offense. Who knows, I seem
15:58
Speaker 1: like Lamar had a lot of success in that offense.
16:00
Speaker 1: But let's say that they'd moved on just for the
16:03
Speaker 1: fact that Romans been there for six years. Time to
16:05
Speaker 1: move on. Todd Monkin comes in. Then the Ravens go
16:10
Speaker 1: out and get Odell Beckham, which, again on paper, you
16:12
Speaker 1: say that guy's gonna be thirty one years old, is
16:14
Speaker 1: coming off two acls, he didn't play last year. Regardless,
16:16
Speaker 1: he's already their number one wide receiver. He's being paid
16:18
Speaker 1: like a number one wide receiver. So they got him
16:21
Speaker 1: the number one wide receiver on the market that was
16:23
Speaker 1: available at the time. You add in Mark Andrews, you
16:28
Speaker 1: add in Dobbins, you add in what seems to be
16:31
Speaker 1: a pretty good offensive line. You're saying, we're doing everything
16:34
Speaker 1: we can on our end, and we're still offering you
16:37
Speaker 1: this very very handsome salary and this very very attractive
16:42
Speaker 1: deal if you're willing to sign it. But Lamar hasn't
16:47
Speaker 1: budged and FaceTime photos or not. It's now been more
16:51
Speaker 1: than twenty four hours since they went and they made
16:54
Speaker 1: a trade for Odell or they went and they signed
16:55
Speaker 1: Odell Beckham, and they signed odeb Beckham for more money
16:59
Speaker 1: than any other team I know is offering them. And
17:01
Speaker 1: I think that might be from one to two to
17:03
Speaker 1: three to four more a million dollars than anyone else
17:05
Speaker 1: was offering Odell Beckham. So all that stuff happened. They
17:09
Speaker 1: know they partied in Miami, is what the headline is.
17:12
Speaker 1: They were at a club together, they were talking. I
17:13
Speaker 1: also saw photos of Odell Beckham sitting and talking with
17:16
Speaker 1: Joe Burrow and Donald Trump. So I don't know how
17:18
Speaker 1: much they were hanging on Saturday in Miami. I don't
17:23
Speaker 1: know what that meant, if they saw each other, if
17:25
Speaker 1: they said what's up? I know they were seeing next
17:26
Speaker 1: to each other. Lamar had that face like I can't
17:28
Speaker 1: get out of this club quick enough. Nothing against Odell.
17:31
Speaker 1: I think Lamar just wasn't looking to be hanging there
17:33
Speaker 1: all night in the photo that I saw. I don't
17:35
Speaker 1: know anyone who tells you that that this is a
17:37
Speaker 1: slam dunk. Now Lamar is gonna accept less money after
17:40
Speaker 1: he's hold out for more money all this time. I
17:43
Speaker 1: don't know again, draft, if Lamar still has not signed
17:50
Speaker 1: with the Ravens, and Lamar still has not agreed to
17:52
Speaker 1: the franchise tag, and the draft starts, and the Ravens
17:55
Speaker 1: at the twenty second pick, and let's just say Anthony
17:57
Speaker 1: Richardson or Will Levis starts slipping seven, eight, nine, ten,
18:04
Speaker 1: suddenly got like the eleventh, the twelfth, thirteenth pick, and
18:07
Speaker 1: those teams don't need quarterbacks. Does Baltimore say screw it
18:11
Speaker 1: and get themselves some assurance. Do they go and they
18:14
Speaker 1: trade up and get a Will Levis? Did they go
18:15
Speaker 1: up and trade up and get an Anthony Richardson. Did
18:17
Speaker 1: they sit at twenty two and take Kendon Hooker just
18:20
Speaker 1: to light a fire under Lamar. Anything's possible at this point.
18:23
Speaker 1: I think the Ravens have tried to come to terms
18:26
Speaker 1: with a contract for Lamar for over two years. What
18:29
Speaker 1: I read is that when Josh Allen signed his contract
18:32
Speaker 1: in the summer of I guess it was summer twenty twenty.
18:36
Speaker 1: Was COVID now twenty twenty one. He signed his deal
18:40
Speaker 1: in twenty twenty one. He signed this big contract, same
18:42
Speaker 1: drive class as Lamar, everything I'll think being equal. He's
18:45
Speaker 1: already made sixty six million dollars in cash. Lamar was
18:49
Speaker 1: offered a similar deal at that time or at the
18:52
Speaker 1: very least shortly thereafter, and has rebuffed it every time
18:55
Speaker 1: along the way and has made you know, far less again.
18:59
Speaker 1: He might win this thing. He might make all the money.
19:01
Speaker 1: He might make a stand for quarterbacks, so that guaranteed
19:03
Speaker 1: quarterback money is a thing that we put in the NFL.
19:05
Speaker 1: Owners have to grind their teeth, and Lamar is going
19:08
Speaker 1: to be a groundbreaker in a lot of ways. In
19:10
Speaker 1: the short term. The Ravens, I think they've got to
19:13
Speaker 1: look at the calendar and say, Okay, is it time
19:14
Speaker 1: for us to maybe create a contingency plan here where
19:17
Speaker 1: we select a quarterback in the NFL draft. Okay, another
19:21
Speaker 1: team who is looking at quarterbacks in the NFL draft.
19:24
Speaker 1: The Panthers traded up for the first overall pick. And
19:31
Speaker 1: you know, the conversation now is Bryce Young, C J. Strout,
19:33
Speaker 1: maybe Anthony Richardson, what do you think is going to
19:35
Speaker 1: happen there? I'm following it really closely, and I know
19:38
Speaker 1: that they're meeting with everyone. Things you need to know
19:41
Speaker 1: about this Panthers team and what they did this offseason.
19:45
Speaker 1: They spent so much money on their offensive coaching staff,
19:49
Speaker 1: so much money. It wasn't enough that they hired Frank Reich.
19:54
Speaker 1: They also went out and they brought Jim Caldwell, And
19:56
Speaker 1: they also went out and brought Josh mccownen they brought out.
19:59
Speaker 1: They went out and they got duced Staley. They are
20:02
Speaker 1: spending a ton of money on their coaches. David Tepper
20:05
Speaker 1: has opened up his wallet and he has gone above
20:07
Speaker 1: and beyond to say, we are going to create the
20:10
Speaker 1: most nurturing environment for whatever this young quarterback is and
20:14
Speaker 1: whoever this young quarterback is. And on defense, they paid
20:18
Speaker 1: head coach money for defensive coordinator. Ever, Oh, they are
20:24
Speaker 1: spending real money to put the culture right in the
20:27
Speaker 1: average between McCown and Reich, I think I did the numbers.
20:31
Speaker 1: I think McCown played fifteen years in the league and
20:33
Speaker 1: Reich played like eighteen years in the league. That's thirty
20:36
Speaker 1: three years of quarterback experience. And I'm not a math major.
20:39
Speaker 1: It might have been more or less whatever it is,
20:42
Speaker 1: but that's thirty three years of quarterback experience. Then you
20:45
Speaker 1: add in Jim Caldwell, who has coach Peyton Manning in
20:48
Speaker 1: Indianapolis as coach Matthew Stafford and Detroit and has had
20:51
Speaker 1: playoff seasons with both those teams. You put all that
20:54
Speaker 1: together and then you say, Okay, give us a young
20:57
Speaker 1: quarterback that you can PLoP in there and they're going
20:59
Speaker 1: to learn. They have no other choice and they're going
21:01
Speaker 1: to learn and they are going to succeed with that coaching.
21:06
Speaker 1: I think Bryce Young is the pick that's on April eleventh.
21:10
Speaker 1: The draft is in sixteen days. Things can change. I've
21:13
Speaker 1: had countless times where I've been told from people around
21:16
Speaker 1: the league that this is what I think is the pick,
21:17
Speaker 1: and go with it, and then in the week that happens,
21:20
Speaker 1: things change. This is my take as of now. I
21:23
Speaker 1: think Bryce Young is the superior quarterback in every single
21:28
Speaker 1: category to CJ. Stroud except for height, weight, size. And
21:36
Speaker 1: you could say, well that's a lot. Well, the NFL
21:37
Speaker 1: is changing, and with that quarterback coaching and with the
21:40
Speaker 1: way an offense can be built and the way that
21:42
Speaker 1: the mobile quarterback and the way that he works in
21:45
Speaker 1: that pocket. I feel like it's something that they can
21:48
Speaker 1: overlook right now. Now you could say, and you'd be
21:50
Speaker 1: absolutely right. There's never been a quarterback of that size
21:52
Speaker 1: in that build to have great success in this league.
21:55
Speaker 1: Drew Brees. It was shorter, but Drew Brees was big.
21:58
Speaker 1: He was like a stocky guy. Kyler Murray, whether you
22:01
Speaker 1: think he's a success or not. Kyler Murray was under
22:03
Speaker 1: six feet, but Kyler Murray is built like, you know,
22:06
Speaker 1: a pretty big. This dude is slight. And the comparison
22:10
Speaker 1: that everyone makes, everyone makes to Bryce Young is Steph Curry,
22:16
Speaker 1: not not Hey, but Colt McCoy was this size or
22:21
Speaker 1: Chase Daniel was this size. No, they go NBA Steph
22:24
Speaker 1: Curry because of his point guard qualities at quarterback. Word
22:30
Speaker 1: is that Nick Saban has been singing about this guy.
22:32
Speaker 1: And you can say, well, Nick Saban sings about all
22:34
Speaker 1: these guys. He does, he does, but I don't think
22:37
Speaker 1: he's been singing about Jalen Hurts to or Back Jones
22:41
Speaker 1: like he sings about this guy. Bryce Young, first Alabama
22:46
Speaker 1: quarterback to win the Heisman obviously has had a ton
22:50
Speaker 1: of success under Nick Saban in that offense. But he
22:53
Speaker 1: has been that dude since he was a high school
22:57
Speaker 1: player in Pasadena, California and came out here. He is
23:01
Speaker 1: incredible in meetings. His voice is a little softer than
23:05
Speaker 1: you might imagine, like this, like the Will Levis type
23:08
Speaker 1: or one of these guys. He's a soft spoken young man,
23:11
Speaker 1: but has like the leadership of a general. It's what
23:13
Speaker 1: everyone says. He can lead the room. He's a savant
23:17
Speaker 1: of the game and in the pocket he is so elusive.
23:21
Speaker 1: If you watch some of these clips, he can move
23:23
Speaker 1: like no one else can right now in the NFL.
23:25
Speaker 1: In the pocket, he's got crazy footwork. The con of course,
23:30
Speaker 1: is that that was against the SEC defenders. That's great,
23:33
Speaker 1: that's fine. The NFL has guys who are six foot
23:37
Speaker 1: seven six ft. The Atlanta Falcons have Calais Campbell, who's
23:41
Speaker 1: gonna be breathing down his neck. The Atlanta Falcons have
23:44
Speaker 1: a ton of other players that are gonna be coming
23:45
Speaker 1: for him. David an Yumada is a huge guy. You
23:48
Speaker 1: go to the Saints, Cam Jordan's a different type of
23:50
Speaker 1: beast than what he saw in the SEC the past
23:53
Speaker 1: few years. I think the number one pick is going
23:56
Speaker 1: to be Bryce Young. I say that on April eleventh,
23:58
Speaker 1: and I think that's the right pick if Carolina is
24:02
Speaker 1: comfortable with his size everything else. Nothing against c J. Stroud,
24:05
Speaker 1: Levis or Richardson. I just believe that Bryce Young has
24:08
Speaker 1: all those qualities to be a face of the franchise
24:11
Speaker 1: and be the quarterback for the Carolina Panthers in the future.
24:14
Speaker 1: Number four, what's up with Cliff Yeah Kingsbury news late
24:20
Speaker 1: last night is that he's going to be working with
24:23
Speaker 1: the USC Trojans Now. The last time we spoke, As
24:28
Speaker 1: you guys know, I'm very close with Cliff Kingsbury. He
24:31
Speaker 1: it was in Thailand the last time we did this,
24:33
Speaker 1: and that was around Super Bowl and he left. I
24:35
Speaker 1: actually hung out with him the Friday of Super Bowl
24:38
Speaker 1: at his place in Arizona, so he was back. We
24:41
Speaker 1: had a long talk and the debate was do I
24:43
Speaker 1: want to come back to football take a year off,
24:45
Speaker 1: or do I want to do TV? Do I knew
24:47
Speaker 1: anything like that? Cliff really never was considering the TV stuff.
24:49
Speaker 1: He wanted to lay low. However, multiple teams expressed interest
24:53
Speaker 1: and bringing him in either for an interview or just
24:55
Speaker 1: giving him the job straight up. In the NFL, as
24:57
Speaker 1: the offensive coordinator. He did go and meet with the
25:00
Speaker 1: Houston Texans. He did have a really good interaction with
25:03
Speaker 1: to Miko Ryan's but it wasn't the right fit. He
25:05
Speaker 1: wasn't ready to take that job and take on the
25:07
Speaker 1: responsibility of being an offensive coardiner in the NFL in
25:10
Speaker 1: Houston at this time because I need a little breath,
25:13
Speaker 1: and if they can't give me a couple, you know,
25:15
Speaker 1: weeks whatever, as I consider and think this out, then
25:17
Speaker 1: it's probably not best for us. So Houston moves on.
25:19
Speaker 1: They hire Bobby Slowik, who was with Demiko and San Francisco.
25:23
Speaker 1: Everyone's happy. They'll have a quarterback at number two and
25:25
Speaker 1: they'll be fine. In the last couple of weeks, Cliff
25:30
Speaker 1: was thinking about things. He has been traveling a lot.
25:32
Speaker 1: He's been all over different countries. He's been all over
25:34
Speaker 1: the America. He was in Miami for a bit. I
25:37
Speaker 1: know that I had a friend who was like, I
25:39
Speaker 1: think I saw Cliff Kingsbury at the Ultra Festival in
25:43
Speaker 1: Miami at a rave. I'm like, it's possible. Sure enough,
25:46
Speaker 1: Cliff was in Miami that weekend. Yes, he was. Cliff
25:49
Speaker 1: Kingsbury and Lincoln Riley go back a long way. Of course,
25:52
Speaker 1: they have history together and they've had several quarterbacks that
25:55
Speaker 1: have overlapped over the years. And position was presented where
25:59
Speaker 1: you could live in Los Angeles. You're not going to
26:01
Speaker 1: be a title of coordinator. You're not gonna have to
26:06
Speaker 1: route as much as if you were the head coach
26:08
Speaker 1: of a college program. I don't even know how much
26:10
Speaker 1: recruiting Cliffs is gonna do. I remember when he was
26:13
Speaker 1: last year and I were talking. We were talking about
26:15
Speaker 1: Texas Tech and all the stuff, and He's like, I
26:16
Speaker 1: just can't imagine doing the recruiting stuff again, especially now
26:19
Speaker 1: with Nil and all that. Stuff like that did not
26:21
Speaker 1: appeal to him. Cliff Kingsbury, he's a coach. That's what
26:24
Speaker 1: he wants to He wanst a coach. And so when
26:26
Speaker 1: you give him this Caleb Wilson, who is the Heisman
26:29
Speaker 1: Trophy winner and it is going to be the first
26:31
Speaker 1: or second overall pick next year, you give him Lincoln Riley,
26:33
Speaker 1: who's a dear friend. You give him Los Angeles, which
26:37
Speaker 1: is a place where he was already heart. His heart
26:39
Speaker 1: was already set on living when he accepted the USC
26:41
Speaker 1: offensive coordinator job a few years ago before bolting for
26:43
Speaker 1: the Cardinals, and then you say, Okay, you could still
26:46
Speaker 1: keep your place in Arizona. You could keep you could
26:48
Speaker 1: have a new place in usc you could live in
26:51
Speaker 1: both places. You can you know, be part of this
26:53
Speaker 1: great run we're doing, but we're not going to commit
26:55
Speaker 1: you to this all in head coach recruiting type deal.
26:59
Speaker 1: I think it's the perfect situation. Look, there's a lot
27:03
Speaker 1: of people who are so critical a Cliff. I don't
27:04
Speaker 1: understand that. Everyone's you know, I was on a text
27:06
Speaker 1: chain and an agent was texting me and he was like,
27:09
Speaker 1: all this guy does is fail upwards. I'm like, he's
27:13
Speaker 1: taking a consultant role on a college football team, Like
27:16
Speaker 1: why is that? It's not like he was just given
27:18
Speaker 1: one hundred million dollars to go coach the Patriot's like
27:21
Speaker 1: he was, He's going. He likes coaching, he wants to
27:23
Speaker 1: coach this kid. He wants to have some sort of
27:26
Speaker 1: work life balance, and I think he's gonna get it.
27:27
Speaker 1: So I'm happy for Cliff. We'll see if he if
27:31
Speaker 1: he if he hits the ground running and he's all
27:33
Speaker 1: in on this thing, or if it's one of those
27:34
Speaker 1: deals where he's coaching but he's also keeping his eye
27:37
Speaker 1: in the NFL and we'll see what happens after that.
27:39
Speaker 1: All right, we're leading up to the draft. We just
27:41
Speaker 1: got a couple of weeks. Do you have a favorite
27:43
Speaker 1: draft prospect that you've been watching or that you're excited
27:46
Speaker 1: to see where they go, you know at the end
27:48
Speaker 1: of the month. But we just did a four hour
27:52
Speaker 1: tongue wagging session on Bryce Young. I think he could
27:54
Speaker 1: do is as commercial. I don't know who Bryce Young's
27:56
Speaker 1: agent is, and I will say this, this is gonna
27:58
Speaker 1: be a different I don't know who any of these
28:00
Speaker 1: guys agents are. I take pride in that I don't.
28:02
Speaker 1: I get this all the time when I'm like talking
28:04
Speaker 1: about prospects and then they'll say, like, it's because he's
28:08
Speaker 1: friends with the agent. I'm like, most most of these
28:10
Speaker 1: guys agents, I don't even know who they are. And
28:13
Speaker 1: they've got NFL prospects that are making one hundred million
28:16
Speaker 1: dollars and they've got NFL players that are on their
28:18
Speaker 1: second contracts. These agents, aren't they know that, you know,
28:22
Speaker 1: they could give me a heads up on this guy
28:23
Speaker 1: that's that's impressing team, or this guy met with this team.
28:26
Speaker 1: But anything an agent tells me is not going to
28:29
Speaker 1: help where this player gets drafted. Truly. Like I could
28:33
Speaker 1: talk about Bryce Young all day long. If if the
28:36
Speaker 1: Panthers want to take CJ. Stroud, because Peter Schreker was
28:39
Speaker 1: talking about Bryce Young on Good Morning Football, it's not
28:41
Speaker 1: going to get him drafted before CJ. Stroud. That said,
28:45
Speaker 1: I've got a guy I like. He's a wide receiver
28:47
Speaker 1: at a All Miss, and I'm surprised he's not getting
28:49
Speaker 1: all the love that everyone else got. He was at
28:51
Speaker 1: the Senior Bowl, he was at the Combine, and he's
28:53
Speaker 1: built like all these old Miss guys. And he's six
28:57
Speaker 1: foot two, he's two hundred and twenty pounds, he runs
28:59
Speaker 1: a four or four or forty. I'm talking about my guy,
29:01
Speaker 1: Jonathan Mingo. Remember that name, Jonathan Mingo. He might go
29:05
Speaker 1: second or third round. I don't know, but I could
29:08
Speaker 1: see Jonathan Mingo being that dude who we're at the
29:11
Speaker 1: twenty eight twenty nine thirty part of the draft and
29:13
Speaker 1: a team's like, you know what, We're taking Jonathan Mingo?
29:16
Speaker 1: All right? So Mingo did not have huge numbers. He
29:18
Speaker 1: had a foot injury a couple of years ago, but
29:21
Speaker 1: he is six to two twenty and comes from the
29:23
Speaker 1: same factory of wide receivers at AJ Brown, DK Metcalf,
29:26
Speaker 1: Elijah Moore have all come from in recent years, and
29:30
Speaker 1: everyone said he's an awesome interview. He runs the routes,
29:33
Speaker 1: he's raw physically because he's such a big guy that
29:35
Speaker 1: you know you could do anything with him. I just
29:37
Speaker 1: saw this happen with A. J. Brown, I saw it
29:39
Speaker 1: happen with DK Metcalf, and I saw it happen with
29:41
Speaker 1: Elijah Moore. I don't know why everyone's against the giant
29:44
Speaker 1: wide receiver out of all miss I am into that.
29:47
Speaker 1: I think those guys are three for three for having
29:49
Speaker 1: some success in the league. And if anything, I'll trust
29:52
Speaker 1: the history from that school and a guy who I'm
29:54
Speaker 1: told as interviewing really well and went to the Senior
29:56
Speaker 1: Bowl and played as a you know, as a senior
29:58
Speaker 1: at college like in the SEC. So that's my name.
30:01
Speaker 1: Everyone's gonna give you all these different prospects, and that's great.
30:04
Speaker 1: I usually have an eye for these things and usually
30:06
Speaker 1: hear it from the right people. I'm gonna say, Jonathan
30:09
Speaker 1: Mingo Aaron and I do not know who his agent is. Awesome. Well, um,
30:17
Speaker 1: I am excited to see especially because his size profile
30:20
Speaker 1: is so different than all these other receivers that we
30:22
Speaker 1: have in this draft. I mean kind of like Bryce
30:23
Speaker 1: Young on the quarterbacks. But yeah, Mingo got some some
30:26
Speaker 1: buzz around the Senior Bowl, so we should That'll be
30:28
Speaker 1: fun to see where he goes. Was there five points?
30:31
Speaker 1: We go through it? Aaron's feel good to be back.
30:34
Speaker 1: It feels great. One thing we didn't hit, and I
30:37
Speaker 1: want to spring it on you because I assume you're
30:39
Speaker 1: all caught up. We're Succession, Season four, episode three. Oh
30:44
Speaker 1: my god, if you tell me you haven't watched it yet, Like,
30:46
Speaker 1: what are we doing? As mister? Should we move to
30:49
Speaker 1: the ad break now? I just haven't watched you haven't
30:51
Speaker 1: watched it. Now, I haven't watched this episode. I haven't
30:54
Speaker 1: watched any of it. I haven't watched any of success
30:57
Speaker 1: You've never seen an episode of Succession, never seen it?
30:59
Speaker 1: What are you doing? What do you want to know?
31:01
Speaker 1: I know I think at this point I am chasing you. Yeah,
31:06
Speaker 1: I think it's I'm just gonna wait till the end
31:09
Speaker 1: and then watch all of it at once. I don't
31:11
Speaker 1: I don't know. I know it's amazing. Everyone tells me
31:14
Speaker 1: it's amazing. Like, I'll admit to you, I never saw
31:18
Speaker 1: a Game of Thrones. I never saw an episode of it. Um,
31:24
Speaker 1: I don't as a New Yorker, as someone who loves media,
31:28
Speaker 1: as someone Aaron, this is a I'm gonna say this,
31:31
Speaker 1: This is an atrocity. Yeah, I know, I was. I
31:36
Speaker 1: was hoping you We're gonna bring it up. We are,
31:39
Speaker 1: We're gonna go We're gonna go to a commercial break.
31:41
Speaker 1: I don't even know if we have commercials. We're gonna
31:43
Speaker 1: go to a commercial break right now. We're gonna hash
31:44
Speaker 1: this out. We'll be back in a second. One thing
31:53
Speaker 1: we pride ourselves on and this podcast is being ahead
31:56
Speaker 1: of the curve, but also being a smart podcast. We're
31:58
Speaker 1: not just gonna be throwing stuff at the wall. We
32:00
Speaker 1: want to make you smarter when you're listening to it,
32:02
Speaker 1: and we want to make you aware of trends that
32:05
Speaker 1: are coming and things that are happening in the league.
32:07
Speaker 1: And you know, I've been doing a lot of work
32:09
Speaker 1: on the draft the last few months and obviously in
32:13
Speaker 1: the last few weeks as I build my first mock
32:14
Speaker 1: draft is going to come out next week. Been talking
32:17
Speaker 1: to teams directly and when you talk to teams. They
32:19
Speaker 1: use a lot of those terms. They use the hip swivel,
32:21
Speaker 1: they use the catchability radius. They talk about, you know,
32:25
Speaker 1: this guy's really good above the neck, which means he's smart.
32:28
Speaker 1: And that's a word that you would never use in
32:30
Speaker 1: real conversation. You would ever say the words this person's
32:33
Speaker 1: really impressive above the neck. That's what they say in conversations.
32:36
Speaker 1: And one thing that continues to be mentioned that I
32:40
Speaker 1: had not heard of, and I'm almost ashamed I haven't.
32:43
Speaker 1: It's something called the S two score. The S two score,
32:46
Speaker 1: So okay, I'm nodding along, And a lot of these
32:49
Speaker 1: conversations and multiple teams are mentioning the S two, the
32:51
Speaker 1: S two. And I grew up in a wonderlick world,
32:54
Speaker 1: so I've always known the wonderlock one to forty and
32:56
Speaker 1: if this train starts at you know, stop, a train
33:00
Speaker 1: b ends, it stops c and who is the fast train?
33:02
Speaker 1: All that stuff. I grew up in a wonderlick draft world.
33:05
Speaker 1: Sounds like there's a new show in town. It's the
33:08
Speaker 1: S two, and it is a processing test. And to
33:11
Speaker 1: get it explained better than me going on the company
33:15
Speaker 1: website and trying to read I thought I would bring
33:17
Speaker 1: someone from the company itself. This is our guest today.
33:20
Speaker 1: This is Brandon Ally, and Brandon Ally is from the
33:25
Speaker 1: S two test. I don't know what are you coming
33:27
Speaker 1: with the companies called or whatever it's but Brandon, when
33:28
Speaker 1: I reached out on the company website and said contact us,
33:32
Speaker 1: your email came up, we interacted, you showed you sent
33:34
Speaker 1: me white papers, and I am fascinated by any new
33:38
Speaker 1: measure of intelligence and processing that this league is using.
33:42
Speaker 1: And I know the NFL network and ESPN are not
33:44
Speaker 1: talking about the S two scores yet, but they might
33:46
Speaker 1: be soon. Brandon Ally, Welcome to the season with Peter Schreeker.
33:51
Speaker 1: Thank you, appreciate it. Glad to be here. Brandon explained,
33:55
Speaker 1: what is the S two test, dude, And start off
33:59
Speaker 1: with what the test is, and then I'll pepper you
34:01
Speaker 1: with questions because I love the stuff. Yeah. Man, so
34:04
Speaker 1: I think it's really clear because you you illustrated a
34:07
Speaker 1: great a great point with the wonderlick. Right, These IQ tests,
34:11
Speaker 1: these intelligence tests, Uh, you know, there's there's no football
34:15
Speaker 1: player on the planet that is when the ball is
34:17
Speaker 1: snapped going to have to decide how fast trains are moving. Um,
34:21
Speaker 1: and so we actually we stay away from the whole
34:23
Speaker 1: IQ piece, the whole intelligence, the whole book smarts things
34:27
Speaker 1: that is absolutely not what we measure. When we're gonna
34:30
Speaker 1: go ahead and assume that these scouts in front offices
34:32
Speaker 1: have done their homework on how well a guy is
34:34
Speaker 1: going to learn their playbook, how well they can understand
34:37
Speaker 1: complexity and things like that, what we measure are those speeded,
34:41
Speaker 1: rapid cognitive processing that occurs once the ball is snapped.
34:45
Speaker 1: So as an example, uh, you know you can you
34:48
Speaker 1: can hear all of the arm armchair quarterbacks in the
34:50
Speaker 1: world tell you, well, if the dB covers the curl,
34:53
Speaker 1: you throw to the flat. If he covers the flat,
34:55
Speaker 1: you throw it to the curl. It's way more complex
34:57
Speaker 1: than that. And they can tell you the rules. There's
35:00
Speaker 1: a host of quarterbacks that can tell you the rules.
35:02
Speaker 1: But when the ball is snapped and they have to
35:04
Speaker 1: filter through all of those rules, they become slow, they hesitate,
35:09
Speaker 1: they may throw to the wrong route. So we're interested
35:12
Speaker 1: in those cognitive processes. Is very rapid processing of visual information,
35:16
Speaker 1: speeded decision making and execution of athletes when they're in
35:22
Speaker 1: the game. So that's a big differentiator from previous things
35:25
Speaker 1: or what's out there currently, whether they're really just tapping
35:29
Speaker 1: into a player's IQ or their book smarts or their
35:33
Speaker 1: ability to understand concepts within football. All right, so you
35:37
Speaker 1: see with the wonderlock, and I hate to keep mentioning
35:39
Speaker 1: a competitor, and you're probably like, ah, we don't really
35:41
Speaker 1: acknowledge it. We just call it IQ test. Fine, IQ test.
35:44
Speaker 1: Here are twelve questions in four minutes. Can you finish it?
35:47
Speaker 1: And can you get them as many right as possible?
35:49
Speaker 1: What is the S two tests? How do you measure
35:53
Speaker 1: processing in a test like form? So it's important to
35:57
Speaker 1: note that you know, Scott and I my co founder,
35:59
Speaker 1: Scott Wiley, we didn't invent these tasks. These tasks have
36:03
Speaker 1: been in laboratories around the world for decades to understand
36:07
Speaker 1: how the brain works in speeded environments. So every you know,
36:12
Speaker 1: we present stimuli and you have to respond most of
36:15
Speaker 1: the time on our test in under half of a
36:17
Speaker 1: second or within a second. Right, And they're facing these
36:21
Speaker 1: tasks that have been used in the laboratory for decades,
36:24
Speaker 1: and we try to understand the system itself. So I'm
36:27
Speaker 1: going to use an example of impulse control, right, impulse
36:30
Speaker 1: control task for us is one of the best predictors
36:33
Speaker 1: of chase rates in Major League Baseball. It's one of
36:36
Speaker 1: the best predictor of interception rate for quarterback hold penalties
36:40
Speaker 1: for offensive linemen. We test the system. So think about
36:43
Speaker 1: when you're sitting at a red light right in the
36:45
Speaker 1: turn lane next to you turns green, and you hit
36:48
Speaker 1: the gas and you go and you you hit the
36:51
Speaker 1: break right. That's your impulse control system engaging. Some of
36:54
Speaker 1: us are quicker and don't fall prey to that kind
36:56
Speaker 1: of stuff, and others of us, man, we're hitting it
36:58
Speaker 1: as soon as it turns green. We can test that
37:00
Speaker 1: overall system and then make That's where Scott and I
37:04
Speaker 1: have sort of built the business around, is interpreting that
37:07
Speaker 1: in how it's going to manifest on the field. So
37:11
Speaker 1: impulse control is really important for chasing sliders out of
37:14
Speaker 1: the zone, you've got to inhibit that, or for partial
37:18
Speaker 1: read throwing it into traffic because it looked good right
37:20
Speaker 1: off the snap right, you've got to inhibit those responses.
37:23
Speaker 1: So we test that system using sort of classic laboratory tests.
37:28
Speaker 1: Give me an example of a classic laboratory test without
37:31
Speaker 1: having it, you know, visually in front of us right now.
37:33
Speaker 1: But if I'm Peter Schreeger PROSPECTS seven thirty five at
37:37
Speaker 1: the combine, I'm sitting down for an S two tests.
37:39
Speaker 1: What is the actual test? Yep? So our test is
37:41
Speaker 1: about forty five minutes in which you sit in front
37:44
Speaker 1: of a specialized gaming system that was built for millisecond precision.
37:49
Speaker 1: One of the tests that I think a lot of
37:52
Speaker 1: companies may use is object tracking, So how many objects
37:56
Speaker 1: You've got to broaden your attention and keep track of
37:58
Speaker 1: many moving objects? Right? An example of a laboratory based
38:02
Speaker 1: test is you may you may have to track three
38:04
Speaker 1: or four objects for ten or fifteen seconds. And here's
38:07
Speaker 1: where Scott and I got a little bit more sophisticated,
38:09
Speaker 1: is that's not how football operates, right. You've got to
38:11
Speaker 1: have a play is three to five seconds. And so
38:14
Speaker 1: we duplicated with how many objects are on the screen.
38:17
Speaker 1: Is what a quarterback or a safety is going to
38:19
Speaker 1: have to look at. And we actually measured how quickly
38:23
Speaker 1: dbs and receivers move across the field. And so that's
38:26
Speaker 1: how quickly our balls move across the screen. It's only
38:28
Speaker 1: for three or five seconds like an NFL play, So
38:30
Speaker 1: we really tried to narrow down the laboratory tests, which
38:34
Speaker 1: may have ten or fifteen balls moving across the screen
38:37
Speaker 1: and you've got to keep track of three of them.
38:39
Speaker 1: We push the limits there. We make these defensive backs
38:43
Speaker 1: and these middle linebackers have to track nine objects, right,
38:46
Speaker 1: because that might be their life within three seconds at
38:49
Speaker 1: the speed in which the game moves. So it's really
38:52
Speaker 1: it's sports specific in that respect, but it is a
38:54
Speaker 1: classic sort of computer based laboratory test. I'm interested in
38:58
Speaker 1: the business of this stuff too, So the Wonderlock for
39:00
Speaker 1: years is the gold standard. You guys come up with
39:02
Speaker 1: this idea which is using classic tests but also using
39:05
Speaker 1: modern technology. How do you get teams to buy in
39:08
Speaker 1: to use it, how do you get prospects to agree
39:10
Speaker 1: to do it? How do you get that story? What's
39:12
Speaker 1: your origin story? If I'm on Shark Tank and you're
39:14
Speaker 1: trying to pitch it to me, what's the story behind
39:16
Speaker 1: the story? Yeah, so I'll give you a little bit
39:18
Speaker 1: of origin story, and then I'll give you the way
39:20
Speaker 1: that we operate. Because I think there's a lot of
39:22
Speaker 1: misconceptions out there about who has access to the data
39:25
Speaker 1: and all of those kind of things. So Scott and
39:27
Speaker 1: I were both college athletes. I was a student athlete
39:31
Speaker 1: at the University of Tennessee in the early nineties when
39:35
Speaker 1: coach Tommy Moffatt was there, and he's the strength of
39:37
Speaker 1: conditioning coach. It was just recently the strength and conditioning
39:39
Speaker 1: coach at LSU. And I've had a twenty five year
39:42
Speaker 1: relationship with Tommy, and so in twenty thirteen, I picked
39:45
Speaker 1: up the phone and said, Hey, here's what Scott and
39:46
Speaker 1: I are doing. And he was like, a guy, you
39:48
Speaker 1: got to get down here and give this to the coaches.
39:50
Speaker 1: So really we built the product at LSU. We bade
39:53
Speaker 1: attested time and time again and again. Scott and I
39:57
Speaker 1: we weren't like, hey, we know football. You know, Scott
40:00
Speaker 1: played college football and college baseball. But it was one
40:02
Speaker 1: of those things where we went to the experts and
40:04
Speaker 1: you know, we asked Corey Raymond, Hey, what do defensive
40:06
Speaker 1: backs have to do? What do you have? What do
40:08
Speaker 1: your safeties have to do? And we worked through this
40:10
Speaker 1: process for a few years at LSU, and then what
40:13
Speaker 1: happened was the Saints, who were right down the road
40:16
Speaker 1: from LSU. I think Jeff Ireland was at LSU for
40:19
Speaker 1: a day or something scouting players and Jack Marucci, who's
40:23
Speaker 1: one of our biggest allies, we don't don't we don't
40:26
Speaker 1: put anything out in the market without working with Jack
40:28
Speaker 1: for a year on it. Jack mentioned this to Jeff,
40:31
Speaker 1: and Jeff picked this up, and so we went through
40:33
Speaker 1: a three year period where we worked with exclusively with
40:37
Speaker 1: the Saints and Cowboys, just figuring out does the product
40:40
Speaker 1: measure what we say it measures, does it predict on
40:43
Speaker 1: field performance, those kinds of things. And once that was
40:47
Speaker 1: sort of rolling after about three years, we decided we
40:51
Speaker 1: were going to go to one team in every division
40:52
Speaker 1: because we didn't want everybody to have access this. We
40:55
Speaker 1: wanted some level of exclusivity to get in there. So
40:58
Speaker 1: we went to one team in every division and it
41:00
Speaker 1: kind of worked through through guys they trusted and through
41:03
Speaker 1: guys they knew. So Jeff Ireland had worked with Brandon,
41:06
Speaker 1: so he picked up the phone and called Brandon Bean.
41:09
Speaker 1: Chris Ballard was in the initial Ryan Poles when he
41:13
Speaker 1: was at the Chiefs were one of the initial groups.
41:15
Speaker 1: So we then had a small, tight knit group that
41:18
Speaker 1: we really worked with. Their analytics groups, We really validated,
41:21
Speaker 1: we did test retest, we did players on and off
41:24
Speaker 1: ADHD Meds. I mean, we really dug into this, and
41:28
Speaker 1: then a year and a half ago we decided we
41:32
Speaker 1: wanted to open up a little bit more. And right
41:35
Speaker 1: now it's just open to two teams in every division,
41:37
Speaker 1: so only half of the league gets these scores, and
41:40
Speaker 1: so we are not. And the way it operates, the
41:44
Speaker 1: contracts operate, is those teams own the data, So we're
41:47
Speaker 1: not allowed to discuss the data. We're not allowed to
41:49
Speaker 1: give the data anybody else. Any scores that you see
41:52
Speaker 1: in the media or leaked or whatever that's not us,
41:55
Speaker 1: that's coming from either agents or front offices, or or
41:58
Speaker 1: just supposition, because we've seen some outright way off the
42:01
Speaker 1: mark claims. But ultimately only only right now, only fifteen
42:07
Speaker 1: teams get the data and use it in their process. Well,
42:11
Speaker 1: you can tie it to my sources if you guys
42:13
Speaker 1: follow us. Who's got the data? Who doesn't? When I
42:15
Speaker 1: told you that, I keep on hearing about the s
42:17
Speaker 1: two scores. How does the prospect in the combine then
42:20
Speaker 1: take this test and then how do they use that
42:22
Speaker 1: as something that they can use as a pro as
42:24
Speaker 1: opposed to a con Yeah, great, great question. So in
42:29
Speaker 1: about twenty sixteen, we started going to all the All
42:32
Speaker 1: Star games. So we go to the NFLPA Game, the
42:34
Speaker 1: Gridiron Game, East West Senior Bowl, and at the time
42:38
Speaker 1: we went to the Combine. And so every year we
42:40
Speaker 1: get about eight hundred to eight hundred and fifty draft
42:43
Speaker 1: eligible prospects for our teams in COVID. All testing stopped
42:48
Speaker 1: at the Combine. So it is it is, we've we've
42:51
Speaker 1: got to find these guys who've got to go to
42:53
Speaker 1: their pro days. We've got to we've got to get
42:55
Speaker 1: go to thirty visits for these teams, and they're willing
42:58
Speaker 1: to do it. The players, the prospects, the agent is like,
43:01
Speaker 1: go and sit there for forty five minutes. For most
43:04
Speaker 1: of the time. It is part of their process. It
43:06
Speaker 1: is part of it's built into the bowl games. So
43:08
Speaker 1: I'm not gonna lie. At the Combine. It was probably
43:11
Speaker 1: six hours of testing these athletes did. It was part
43:14
Speaker 1: of their process. Wonderlick was one of them that everybody did.
43:17
Speaker 1: The NFL has their own tool, the pat that they do.
43:20
Speaker 1: Everybody does that, and then every group of teams also
43:24
Speaker 1: has their own tests. I think for the most part,
43:27
Speaker 1: it's really beneficial to engage in this from the S
43:30
Speaker 1: two perspective, I think that you know, when you see
43:33
Speaker 1: this kind of stuff in the media, you're hanging your
43:34
Speaker 1: hat on a number, and it's just the overall number
43:38
Speaker 1: we examine, like I alluded to earlier, nine different specific
43:42
Speaker 1: cognitive tests, and it's really it's the pattern. And what's
43:46
Speaker 1: most important for these athletes and agents to understand and
43:49
Speaker 1: to know is these pattern of results lead to a
43:53
Speaker 1: particular style of play. And I think it can be
43:56
Speaker 1: really helpful for an athlete to match up with an
44:00
Speaker 1: organization or a coordinator or a particular scheme based on
44:04
Speaker 1: their results. So you may have a we're going to
44:07
Speaker 1: stick with the quarterback position. You may have a quarterback
44:11
Speaker 1: who can't track a ton of moving objects. They may
44:14
Speaker 1: have a little bit of tunnel vision. They may not
44:16
Speaker 1: be able to do four or five Q reads, they
44:19
Speaker 1: can only do two or three Q reads. You need
44:22
Speaker 1: to know that so that you can build your playbook
44:24
Speaker 1: in your system around that athlete rather than forcing them
44:27
Speaker 1: into what you're doing. I think one of the most
44:29
Speaker 1: enlightening comments we ever heard was from Dave Randa, who
44:33
Speaker 1: was like, Wow, man, I have been trying to fit
44:35
Speaker 1: my players into my scheme I should be building my
44:37
Speaker 1: scheme around what these kids can do. And it's like, yeah, absolutely.
44:41
Speaker 1: So for an athlete, it will help them at the
44:44
Speaker 1: next level. A get up to speed, quick, quicker, and
44:47
Speaker 1: be your front office and coaches know what you're how
44:51
Speaker 1: you're wired, how you're built for the game, so that
44:54
Speaker 1: they can plan around that. You get this this test
44:59
Speaker 1: up and running, you're rolling. And now what's a good score,
45:03
Speaker 1: like what's in the wonder like Ryan Fitzpatrick to forty?
45:06
Speaker 1: We talk about it, Johnny Menzel get the high score,
45:09
Speaker 1: we talk about it. A player gets a low score,
45:11
Speaker 1: we roll our eyes and say, you know, and we
45:13
Speaker 1: dance around that that topic. What's a high score? What's
45:16
Speaker 1: a low score? And if I was to rally around
45:19
Speaker 1: my client, if I'm an agent talking to teams, am
45:21
Speaker 1: I what am I saying? Yep? Great question. So as
45:25
Speaker 1: opposed to those tests that just make up their own
45:28
Speaker 1: scoring scales, what we do is we take their raw
45:31
Speaker 1: data and we provide Z scores and then translate that
45:36
Speaker 1: into percentiles. So every score you hear, that's how that
45:40
Speaker 1: player ranks among all test takers. So our database is
45:44
Speaker 1: about four thousand professional football players, and so if you
45:47
Speaker 1: hear they scored an eighty seven. That means they scored
45:50
Speaker 1: better than eighty seven percent of all football players taking
45:53
Speaker 1: the test. Okay, so buy statistics and buy our normal
45:57
Speaker 1: shape distribution. Fifty is average, So if you score fifty,
46:01
Speaker 1: you're dead in the middle of all pro players. I
46:03
Speaker 1: just want that in perspective because most of the time
46:05
Speaker 1: here somebody yeah yeah. And so our average range is
46:10
Speaker 1: between forty and sixty. So if you score at forty four,
46:13
Speaker 1: people are like, holy smokes. Forty four is average. I
46:16
Speaker 1: mean that is an average NFL player as an average
46:19
Speaker 1: pro player. So score we consider elite is eighty and above.
46:23
Speaker 1: What we score high average is sixty to eighty. Average
46:26
Speaker 1: is forty to sixty. Below average is twenty to forty.
46:29
Speaker 1: And you know, one of the one of the poorer
46:32
Speaker 1: scores between zero and twenty, which you just don't see
46:34
Speaker 1: that often in pro football. All right, two more questions
46:39
Speaker 1: from me. The first one is I never played football
46:42
Speaker 1: at any level, but I counsider myself a quick processor.
46:44
Speaker 1: Can I walk in and get an eighty seven percent?
46:46
Speaker 1: Or do you need to have football to be able
46:48
Speaker 1: to do the test itself? Yep, No, this is not football. Specific.
46:52
Speaker 1: All of our batteries of tasks are different for each
46:56
Speaker 1: for each sport, but it requires zero football knowledge, and
46:59
Speaker 1: I think that's where we sort of separate ourselves from
47:01
Speaker 1: other other products. We're truly measuring the way the brain
47:04
Speaker 1: is wired and how that will influence their play, versus
47:09
Speaker 1: needing some sophisticated knowledge. I'll tell you this is pretty
47:12
Speaker 1: cool because we wanted to get in the question of
47:15
Speaker 1: gaming in these elite gamers and how do they score
47:17
Speaker 1: against athletes? Right, Yeah, So we took the top ten
47:21
Speaker 1: Halo players in the world and put them on this
47:24
Speaker 1: football battle and on average these guys scored sixty eight
47:28
Speaker 1: So they scored only about sixty eight percent. So when
47:31
Speaker 1: you see these quarterbacks with these elite scores, they're better processing.
47:35
Speaker 1: They're quicker processors than the best gamers in the world.
47:38
Speaker 1: I think it's important context. Obviously, this is a contract
47:43
Speaker 1: deal where you work with teams and you work with
47:44
Speaker 1: prospects and you work at the balls. If an everyday
47:47
Speaker 1: Joe just wanted to listen to this podcast and see
47:49
Speaker 1: how they could fare, they could always google a Wonderlick
47:52
Speaker 1: test and try to take it. Is there a sample
47:53
Speaker 1: test on the website that there's somewhere where we could
47:55
Speaker 1: test ours two scores, whether getting into the gaming screens
47:59
Speaker 1: or not. Is there a way to be able to
48:00
Speaker 1: do it if you're not a part of an NFL
48:02
Speaker 1: team or trying to have have for the NFL. Yeah, so
48:05
Speaker 1: we yes, I'll say yes and no. So we have
48:11
Speaker 1: our elite system that's built on laboratory based precision. We
48:14
Speaker 1: carry around these proprietary response pads that can capture reaction
48:18
Speaker 1: time within one one thousandth of a second. We have
48:21
Speaker 1: scaled onto Xbox and so we're using that Xbox model
48:26
Speaker 1: for the sub collegiate level. So anybody bought a college
48:29
Speaker 1: will probably be on the Xbox. And we have testing
48:32
Speaker 1: centers around the country that are primarily you know, sports
48:36
Speaker 1: based facilities, your d ones, your travel baseball facilities, those
48:40
Speaker 1: kinds of things that you could walk in and take
48:42
Speaker 1: a test. Okay, last one, extra one, nature versus nurture
48:46
Speaker 1: on this thing. Could you take any high school athlete
48:49
Speaker 1: PLoP them in there is there a chance that kid
48:50
Speaker 1: could get a ninety? Absolutely? Yep, yep. This is testing
48:54
Speaker 1: the way the system your brain is wired and and
48:58
Speaker 1: this is this is not something that you can study for.
49:01
Speaker 1: This is not something you could practice a bunch. We've
49:03
Speaker 1: seen you know, we've seen the the It's interesting you
49:06
Speaker 1: see these scores lead you hear the Bryce Young story.
49:08
Speaker 1: And we did test Bryce in high school, right, he
49:10
Speaker 1: was at the Quarterback Collective. We work with Richmond followers
49:13
Speaker 1: and the Quarterback Collective guys. But this is not something
49:16
Speaker 1: that you're like, Hey, Bryce took it as a high
49:18
Speaker 1: schooler and he kept taking it at Alabama, so he's
49:20
Speaker 1: going to score better. It is how you're wired. Bryce
49:22
Speaker 1: literally scored the same as he did at at his
49:28
Speaker 1: facility as he did when he was a junior in
49:30
Speaker 1: high school. So the system isn't changing that much. I'll
49:33
Speaker 1: say there is some brain maturation, right, I mean, your
49:36
Speaker 1: brain is still developing until you're early twenties, so there's
49:39
Speaker 1: a little bit of moving the needle. But this is
49:41
Speaker 1: how you're wired. And for those that are interested in training,
49:44
Speaker 1: because you can improve You're not going to improve your
49:47
Speaker 1: score on our test. You can improve that specific cognitive
49:50
Speaker 1: skill in the field. So you've got to do all
49:52
Speaker 1: of your work on the field. We would never recommend
49:55
Speaker 1: somebody go in and take these iPad apps and stay
49:57
Speaker 1: on the iPad. Hey, I'm gonna improve your batting average
49:59
Speaker 1: by thirty points if you do this iPad app. That's
50:02
Speaker 1: not how it works. It won't transfer it on the field.
50:04
Speaker 1: You actually have to do very so if it cognitively
50:07
Speaker 1: focused drills on the field to improve performance. So you
50:10
Speaker 1: can't hire someone from the Capitlan SATC service and have
50:14
Speaker 1: them tutor you and just prep you for the test
50:16
Speaker 1: like I did for the That is impossible. And every
50:19
Speaker 1: every test we do you're required well, I would say
50:22
Speaker 1: ninety percent of the test your responses are within half
50:26
Speaker 1: a second. Yeah, So there's no like studying. There's no
50:29
Speaker 1: like gaming it or practicing it. I mean, this is
50:31
Speaker 1: the only way you can do is not give full
50:33
Speaker 1: effort and you'll get hammered. That test prep wasted. Anyway,
50:37
Speaker 1: I got a three ninety in math and I paid
50:39
Speaker 1: a tutor and the whole thing, And yeah, that was that. Uh, Brandon,
50:43
Speaker 1: you're the man. Where you guys located. We're based out
50:45
Speaker 1: of Nashville, Tennessee. Nashville, Tennessee. That's really cool. You're a
50:49
Speaker 1: young guy and you and your partner are building a
50:51
Speaker 1: really cool business. And I could already feel and making
50:53
Speaker 1: an impact in the NFL, and it feels like it's
50:55
Speaker 1: a cool grassroots story that you guys built us yourselves. Congratulations, dude,
50:58
Speaker 1: appreciate it, man, thanks for having me on. Really appreciate this,
51:02
Speaker 1: no doubt. Guys. Brandon Ally, what's the company called if
51:05
Speaker 1: people want to look it up, Brandon S two cognition
51:10
Speaker 1: dot com. We've got a lot of social media stuff
51:13
Speaker 1: where we try to post some educational content if you're
51:15
Speaker 1: interested in in you know how you know how cognition
51:18
Speaker 1: plays out on the sports field. Um, yeah, follow us
51:22
Speaker 1: on social and listen to our podcasts and yep, love
51:25
Speaker 1: it all right, dude, thank you so much for joining us,
51:27
Speaker 1: and I'm sure we'll be hearing about the S two
51:29
Speaker 1: cognitive tests in the next couple of weeks. Thanks brother,
51:32
Speaker 1: I really appreciate it. You know, we could have had
51:42
Speaker 1: on a GM maybe we will, or a draft prospect.
51:46
Speaker 1: I'm finding them to get they're all like running together.
51:49
Speaker 1: We do one good Morning Fall interview, like eight prospects
51:51
Speaker 1: a day, and I can't even get them straight. They
51:53
Speaker 1: all are just wonderful young men. But it's like, I
51:55
Speaker 1: don't know if I need to hear from a nineteen
51:56
Speaker 1: year old kid about training for the draft. Um, I
51:59
Speaker 1: sounded pretty dismissive. Sorry, uh, but we were talking as
52:03
Speaker 1: we get back, Like, Brandon ally is the type of
52:06
Speaker 1: guest Aaron like I want to have on I'd never
52:09
Speaker 1: heard of S two cognitive tests. Apparently it's been around
52:12
Speaker 1: for a while and teams are using it to get
52:14
Speaker 1: an edge on the other half of the league. I
52:16
Speaker 1: find that interesting. Yeah, I want to know what those
52:19
Speaker 1: other half of the league teams need to do to
52:22
Speaker 1: get the S two tests, because it sounds like, you know,
52:25
Speaker 1: if you're some of these people are getting my leg up.
52:27
Speaker 1: I think it's a competitive advantage. Brandon was cool too,
52:29
Speaker 1: young guy at a Nashville and anyone who's an entrepreneur
52:31
Speaker 1: and could build their own company, I appreciate that stuff.
52:35
Speaker 1: We're gonna end the pod with what we're gonna do
52:36
Speaker 1: every week. I think we're gonna take reader tweets and respond,
52:40
Speaker 1: I said, off Mike, and I'm not copying anybody, but like,
52:43
Speaker 1: I love when Ryan Russillo does life advice. I love
52:46
Speaker 1: when Bill Simmons and cousin sal do parent corner. This
52:50
Speaker 1: isn't exactly reinventing the wheel. Let's read some tweets. What
52:53
Speaker 1: do we got eron? Yes, so we did. We did
52:55
Speaker 1: some tweets and some emails, and we got a couple questions,
52:59
Speaker 1: some of my favorite ones here, what's your take on
53:02
Speaker 1: the Amazon Thursday Nights stuff? Okay, So I wasn't at
53:06
Speaker 1: the league meetings, usually I am, and I hear it
53:08
Speaker 1: was like a pretty interesting room where it was presented
53:12
Speaker 1: that the Amazon Thursday Night schedule would have the ability
53:16
Speaker 1: to flex games at the end of this season. And
53:19
Speaker 1: there is a big contingent that was for that, and
53:23
Speaker 1: I believe from what it sounds like, the league was
53:25
Speaker 1: more than willing to help push that over the finish line.
53:28
Speaker 1: But then there was a strong contingent against it in
53:31
Speaker 1: that it's not fair to the fans, like Week fourteen,
53:35
Speaker 1: Week fifteen, Week sixteen, if you've bought your tickets for
53:39
Speaker 1: US Sunday in December and then you're told the game
53:41
Speaker 1: is actually Thursday Night at seven thirty. John Marrow was
53:45
Speaker 1: the biggest voice of that, the owner of the Giants,
53:48
Speaker 1: and to me, I'm always amazed that it could get
53:50
Speaker 1: to that point that it gets to the room and
53:52
Speaker 1: we're out a vote, and now John Mara's voicing like
53:55
Speaker 1: his this pleasure for it. But that's what these league
53:57
Speaker 1: meetings are. You have thirty one different people in that room.
54:00
Speaker 1: Thirty two it's a representative from Green Bay, and they
54:03
Speaker 1: have opinions, and it's an open forum. You know, David
54:07
Speaker 1: Tepper is worth you know how many billion he's got,
54:10
Speaker 1: and he owned Wall Street. He's got a voice in
54:13
Speaker 1: that room. And so does you know Mike Brown who's
54:16
Speaker 1: the owner of the Bengals, and it's a family run business,
54:19
Speaker 1: and he's got a thought. Now, from what I'm told,
54:22
Speaker 1: the argument for the pro side of it is not
54:24
Speaker 1: the Amazon people, you know, lobbying like we're in DC
54:28
Speaker 1: on the Hill or something. What it is is it's
54:31
Speaker 1: Amazon paid a lot of money for a standalone package,
54:35
Speaker 1: just like ESPN pays a lot of money for a
54:37
Speaker 1: standalone package. Now, if you're CBS or Fox, you get
54:41
Speaker 1: a slate of seven games every weekend. So you could
54:43
Speaker 1: kind of say, all right, we had an expectation that
54:46
Speaker 1: Packers Giants was going to be important, but the Packers
54:48
Speaker 1: have three wins and the Giants have six wins this year.
54:51
Speaker 1: In this instance, actually San Francisco, New Orleans, that's who
54:54
Speaker 1: we're sending our crew to and we're gonna tell them
54:56
Speaker 1: on Monday and they'll be there Sunday and we've got
54:57
Speaker 1: that game. Amazon did not have that luxury last year,
55:02
Speaker 1: and nor did ESPN. So ESPN had a late season
55:06
Speaker 1: Packers Rams Monday Night game that I don't remember, but
55:10
Speaker 1: I'm sure when they were given that game in May
55:14
Speaker 1: before last season, Packers, Rams, McVeigh, Stafford, Rogers, all that stuff,
55:19
Speaker 1: they expected to have the game of the year late season.
55:22
Speaker 1: Well it wasn't. It was a dud. ESPN is part
55:25
Speaker 1: of their deal. They get some flex games now at
55:28
Speaker 1: the end of the season. It makes sense they had
55:30
Speaker 1: no other choice. That was the only game they can get.
55:32
Speaker 1: And as much as a scheduling quirk that might be,
55:35
Speaker 1: it is fair for a media company, according to those
55:38
Speaker 1: who are in favor of this thing, to have that luxury,
55:41
Speaker 1: no matter who had the Thursday night game, whether it
55:45
Speaker 1: was Apple or Google, or if you're not CBS and
55:50
Speaker 1: you're not NBC and you're not Fox, you're getting dealt
55:56
Speaker 1: what the league gives you. And you're straddled with this
55:58
Speaker 1: thing despite paying the same money as the other guys.
56:01
Speaker 1: So I understand it, and it's a better product, and
56:04
Speaker 1: it helps everybody to have people watching foot ball. But
56:07
Speaker 1: I also hear the other side of it. It's kind
56:09
Speaker 1: of BS for the players, it's kind of BS for
56:12
Speaker 1: the fans, and it's kind of BS for the season
56:14
Speaker 1: ticket holders who have to base their lives around those games.
56:17
Speaker 1: When the schedule comes out in May. Right now, it
56:20
Speaker 1: sounds like they don't have enough votes, but they're a
56:22
Speaker 1: couple short. In May, they're gonna vote on it again.
56:26
Speaker 1: I'd be shocked if it doesn't pass. All right. Number two,
56:29
Speaker 1: we already talk succession a little bit. What's another show
56:32
Speaker 1: you watched while you were off? All right? So it
56:34
Speaker 1: sounds like the guy who comes along in you know,
56:38
Speaker 1: twenty twenty three, and it's like you never see Seinfeld.
56:40
Speaker 1: It's pretty funny. I resisted ted Lasso for a long
56:46
Speaker 1: time because I just, I don't know, It's like it
56:50
Speaker 1: seemed very hokey dokey, and it seemed a little cringey
56:52
Speaker 1: when I would see the ads. This show is an
56:55
Speaker 1: awesome I've loved it. I am cursing up a storm.
56:59
Speaker 1: We binged a shit out of Ted Lasso while we
57:02
Speaker 1: were off, while I was off with Praternity Leave. I
57:05
Speaker 1: love it. I love everything about it. I think it's
57:06
Speaker 1: well written. I think it's got so much heart. I
57:08
Speaker 1: think the soccer stuff is good. I think it's funny.
57:11
Speaker 1: And I am so into Lasso that you know, this
57:15
Speaker 1: is a show that's not a streamer that everyone just
57:17
Speaker 1: being just like I am caught up to date. I've
57:20
Speaker 1: been watching the first few episodes of season three and
57:23
Speaker 1: I'm like up to date and I am ready. I
57:25
Speaker 1: don't know what dy it drops. I honestly don't. I
57:27
Speaker 1: just I get excited. I opened the Apple app and
57:29
Speaker 1: it's there. I don't know, said Akas. I don't know
57:32
Speaker 1: any of the show runners. I don't know Bill Lawrence.
57:34
Speaker 1: I don't know guys. Hats off to them to have
57:36
Speaker 1: an earnest, yet well written comedy that isn't in the
57:41
Speaker 1: Michael Shore parks and rec mockumentary, abbot elementary mocumentary office
57:47
Speaker 1: mockumentary format of everyone you know is looking at a
57:50
Speaker 1: camera off screen, rolling their eyes, because that's just what
57:54
Speaker 1: comedy has become. It's a real show that is like
57:59
Speaker 1: old school. I feel like I'm watching Cheers every week.
58:01
Speaker 1: I love it. I have no cynicism. I know you
58:04
Speaker 1: said you don't watch Succession Aaron, have you done Ted Lasso?
58:09
Speaker 1: I have. So. We were so into season one, loved it,
58:13
Speaker 1: loved it, loved it, watched all season two as well.
58:16
Speaker 1: Have not started season three yet. Um there were there
58:21
Speaker 1: were elements of season two that didn't hook me the
58:23
Speaker 1: same way one did. One was was just beautiful. I thought, Um,
58:28
Speaker 1: I personally I didn't love when the assistant coach like
58:32
Speaker 1: kind of turns evil. Yes, spoiler alert, I apologize, it's
58:35
Speaker 1: actually a weird subplot. Still, yeah, it continues on to
58:39
Speaker 1: season three, and I'm not gonna give anything away, but
58:43
Speaker 1: I agree, like, I still don't. I still don't know
58:46
Speaker 1: why he's so angry at Ted. Yeah, and um he there, Yeah,
58:52
Speaker 1: there were elements of that. I also, uh, I know
58:55
Speaker 1: that Beard is one of the writers, but I remember
58:59
Speaker 1: last season like Beard episode, be Beard episode. I was like, ah,
59:03
Speaker 1: if you're not, if you don't watch it. Basically, they
59:05
Speaker 1: have this normal show and the plot advances, and then
59:08
Speaker 1: on like episode nine, Coach Beard just has this long,
59:11
Speaker 1: never ending night where he ends up in like glitter
59:14
Speaker 1: pants and he's it's just like this deep, deep cut
59:16
Speaker 1: of an assistant coach, a secondary character. I read after
59:20
Speaker 1: the fact because I did not like that episode either.
59:22
Speaker 1: People love it, Aaron, people love it. I think it's
59:25
Speaker 1: like I look and apparently they had done eight episodes
59:29
Speaker 1: in scripts and then they were like supposed to do
59:31
Speaker 1: two more so on the back end they did that
59:34
Speaker 1: and the Christmas episode and they kind of just dropped
59:37
Speaker 1: them in. People love the Beard episode. Yeah, no, I know, yep,
59:43
Speaker 1: it didn't hit for me. That's you know, it's okay. Yeah.
59:47
Speaker 1: Season three is a new character in it who I'm
59:49
Speaker 1: already digging. And there's some strange Aaron Rodgers parallels to
59:54
Speaker 1: this character. I'll leave it as that. Did see Sadakis
59:58
Speaker 1: at a Nick game. He was sitting courtside. I was not,
1:00:04
Speaker 1: but he was with the cast of Ted Last So
1:00:06
Speaker 1: and those guys look like they actually really get along
1:00:08
Speaker 1: off camera too, which is pretty cool. Yeah. Another show
1:00:11
Speaker 1: I've been watching that I'm not sure if you watch
1:00:14
Speaker 1: is your friend Paul Rodd's Party Down. So explain, because
1:00:18
Speaker 1: I've watched Party Down on Bravo years ago. Stars Yes,
1:00:22
Speaker 1: Stars Love, Adam Scott Love, Martin Star Love, Lizzie Kaplan
1:00:27
Speaker 1: what is? And then I kind of I missed this?
1:00:29
Speaker 1: So Stars has and Paul Rudd was an executive producer
1:00:33
Speaker 1: and a writer and all that. It's back or it's
1:00:36
Speaker 1: a reunion show. What is it? A little bit of both?
1:00:39
Speaker 1: They revived it reunion, it's it like takes place post
1:00:43
Speaker 1: pandemic and it's I think six. They're like like Martin Star,
1:00:46
Speaker 1: it's like a forty year old man. He's a forty
1:00:48
Speaker 1: year old cater still. Yeah, so they're all I mean,
1:00:51
Speaker 1: the premise of the show is people in LA who
1:00:53
Speaker 1: are in some creative field, typically who their side job
1:00:56
Speaker 1: is a catering business. The beauty of the setup of
1:00:59
Speaker 1: the show is that it takes place at a new
1:01:01
Speaker 1: event every week. So sometimes it's a dance or it
1:01:05
Speaker 1: is a fundraiser or it's a big award ceremony, and
1:01:08
Speaker 1: the caterers are always the same, but they're working these
1:01:11
Speaker 1: different events. And this one is kind of like catching
1:01:14
Speaker 1: up with everyone. Adam Scott is back with the catering company.
1:01:19
Speaker 1: It is. I laughed so much watched Okay, so here's
1:01:23
Speaker 1: my question. I remember vaguely watching episode here there whatever.
1:01:27
Speaker 1: I wasn't like a party down. Can I jump in
1:01:29
Speaker 1: on these? Yeah? There there will be There are new characters.
1:01:33
Speaker 1: There are some jokes that are like paid off from long,
1:01:36
Speaker 1: long time ago. But you don't need by any means. Yeah, okay,
1:01:41
Speaker 1: I love this stuff. All right, what's your last one?
1:01:43
Speaker 1: I'm sure? Yeah. And we had plenty of football related
1:01:46
Speaker 1: ones that we answered earlier, but this one is really,
1:01:49
Speaker 1: I think the most draft relevant question we received, which is,
1:01:53
Speaker 1: what are your thoughts on the Super Mario movie? I
1:01:56
Speaker 1: loved it? Can I tell you why I loved it?
1:01:59
Speaker 1: Eighty two minutes? Holy? Was that enjoyable? Eighty two minutes?
1:02:06
Speaker 1: It's in and out. As a fellow Brooklyn resident, you'll
1:02:09
Speaker 1: appreciate it starts off in animated Brooklyn. And I don't
1:02:14
Speaker 1: need to go through the entire plot of the Mario
1:02:16
Speaker 1: Brothers movie with you, but I will tell you this.
1:02:20
Speaker 1: It's eighty two minutes. It starts. You know, every character.
1:02:23
Speaker 1: I don't know if you need to know the backstory
1:02:25
Speaker 1: on the Mario saga, but they give you one. You know,
1:02:28
Speaker 1: comes from a couple of parents that were, you know,
1:02:31
Speaker 1: expecting more out a young Mario in Luigi, and yet
1:02:33
Speaker 1: here they are saving the world. Loved it, My son
1:02:36
Speaker 1: loved it. It made three hundred and seventy seven million
1:02:38
Speaker 1: dollars worldwide in its first weekend. That's no surprise. And
1:02:42
Speaker 1: I think the coolest thing is and this could be,
1:02:45
Speaker 1: you know, a bad sign, but I think the Marvel thing.
1:02:47
Speaker 1: And again I might be on like Reddit in bad ways,
1:02:50
Speaker 1: but like the Marvel things seem to be petering out
1:02:52
Speaker 1: a little bit. The DC thing keeps on having to
1:02:55
Speaker 1: these upstarts. We haven't even started the Nintendo thing. And
1:02:59
Speaker 1: you know, I think everyone was burned by the original
1:03:01
Speaker 1: Mario movie, which is now becoming a cult classic. People
1:03:03
Speaker 1: are going back me. I'm like Bob Hoskins in the
1:03:05
Speaker 1: original Nintendo movie. He deserved an award. If this opens
1:03:09
Speaker 1: the door to a Zelda movie, and this opens a
1:03:12
Speaker 1: door to a Castlevania movie, if this opens the d
1:03:16
Speaker 1: to a Metroid, to Ninja guiding, you name it, I'm
1:03:21
Speaker 1: here for it. And in the previews, there was a
1:03:24
Speaker 1: Ninja Turtles preview for a movie coming out in August.
1:03:26
Speaker 1: That's a new Ninja Turtles movie. So I am just
1:03:29
Speaker 1: hitting this awesome period with my son where he can
1:03:32
Speaker 1: sit through a movie. But if you tell me it's
1:03:35
Speaker 1: a three hour movie, or if there's dark, you know,
1:03:38
Speaker 1: plot twist with death littered throughout it, I'm not in
1:03:41
Speaker 1: on it. Mario, great movie. Enjoyed it? Jack Black singing
1:03:45
Speaker 1: Peaches Market Market down right now? April eleventh, Peter Schreeger saying,
1:03:50
Speaker 1: Jack Black will win an Oscar for Best Song at
1:03:56
Speaker 1: the Oscars next year. I know how hungry the Academy
1:03:59
Speaker 1: Awards are for stars and for any sort of relevance,
1:04:01
Speaker 1: and I also think it deserves it. Jack Black singing
1:04:04
Speaker 1: the song Peaches, It's King, It's it's Bowser's epic nod
1:04:09
Speaker 1: to the princess and his love for her. All right,
1:04:12
Speaker 1: putting you on the spot here, you don't have to
1:04:14
Speaker 1: answer this if you don't want. Who would be your
1:04:16
Speaker 1: dream directors for a Zelda, A Metroid, a Castlevania movie? Okay?
1:04:22
Speaker 1: Dream directors? Do I have to say to Daniels um No,
1:04:25
Speaker 1: I would say, uh, gosh, I would love a Pta
1:04:30
Speaker 1: look at Zelda the Journey, um you know for for
1:04:34
Speaker 1: for Zelda with with Paul Thomas Anderson would be great. Uh.
1:04:39
Speaker 1: Metroid would have to be probably like you're going Ridley
1:04:44
Speaker 1: Scott style, like you gotta go go that way? And
1:04:47
Speaker 1: what was the last one Castlevania Sylvania? Yeah? Any of them? Yeah?
1:04:50
Speaker 1: I mean obviously you can go with with Jordan Peel
1:04:53
Speaker 1: for Castlevania, or you can go with Eli roth Um.
1:04:57
Speaker 1: I gotta think I know he says he's retiring after
1:04:59
Speaker 1: this next one, but I gotta think a Tarantino spin
1:05:04
Speaker 1: on Paperboy would be a fantastic, fantastic film. I had
1:05:09
Speaker 1: a group text with some friends. We actually were debating
1:05:11
Speaker 1: this the other day, and my submission was a Wes
1:05:15
Speaker 1: Anderson fantastic mister Fox style Yoshi's story, all cutouts and everything,
1:05:21
Speaker 1: but awesome. That's the podcast. Aaron Won Kaufman, you are
1:05:25
Speaker 1: the man. Jason English, you are the best from iHeart obviously,

Speaker 1: this thing back off the ground and up and running again.
1:05:38
Speaker 1: It would took a little hiatus. That's okay, we're back.
