Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Don't Let Your Fear Of Failure Prevent You From Trying
Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey, hey, Emily. Here you are listening to five Minute
- 0:23Speaker 1: Friday from Hurdle. This week, I'm rapping about failure. It
- 0:28Speaker 1: is something that is crippling for so many and it's understandable,
- 0:33Speaker 1: right because you don't work hard at something for it
- 0:37Speaker 1: to not go as you hoped. But with that said,
- 0:41Speaker 1: there are different stakes that you are undergoing every week. Right,
- 0:47Speaker 1: Some things you may fail at and it's a bigger
- 0:51Speaker 1: deal than other things. Maybe you feel as though you
- 0:55Speaker 1: failed because you were let go from a job, or
- 0:58Speaker 1: you feel as though you failed because you were in
- 1:02Speaker 1: a long term relationship that didn't work out. Now, it
- 1:05Speaker 1: doesn't help with social media that sometimes we talk about
- 1:10Speaker 1: these things openly publicly, and then there is room for
- 1:15Speaker 1: critique from so many others when things don't go to plan.
- 1:20Speaker 1: With all of this said, my urgency for you this week,
- 1:25Speaker 1: my hope for you is that a fear of failure
- 1:30Speaker 1: doesn't prevent you from trying, because in order to get
- 1:33Speaker 1: to where you want to be, you need to be
- 1:36Speaker 1: willing to try. In order to get to where you
- 1:39Speaker 1: want to be, you need to be willing to try,
- 1:43Speaker 1: and that means that you also need to be willing
- 1:45Speaker 1: to get uncomfortable. I didn't know the first thing about
- 1:49Speaker 1: podcasting when I started podcasting, but what I did know
- 1:53Speaker 1: was that where there's a will, there's a way. And
- 1:56Speaker 1: so I started asking questions and trying new things, and
- 2:00Speaker 1: understanding that if the worst thing that could happen was
- 2:03Speaker 1: that I started exactly back at square one, then candidly
- 2:07Speaker 1: square one wasn't all that bad to begin with. This
- 2:10Speaker 1: is showing up for me right now in my life,
- 2:12Speaker 1: in maybe not as serious of a way. I have
- 2:15Speaker 1: this goal this year to get three pull ups. If
- 2:17Speaker 1: you follow me on Instagram, you have been indulging in
- 2:21Speaker 1: this journey with me. And I remember when I went
- 2:24Speaker 1: to go after my first pull up toward the end
- 2:27Speaker 1: of twenty twenty four. I was sitting about to do
- 2:32Speaker 1: a lap pull down, and the lap pull down felt
- 2:35Speaker 1: rather easy, and I thought to myself, Hmm, I wonder
- 2:38Speaker 1: if I'm capable of doing a pull up now, something
- 2:40Speaker 1: that I hadn't tried in probably about ten plus years,
- 2:45Speaker 1: certainly not in my adult life, without assistance from some
- 2:48Speaker 1: sort of a resistance band. And so I went over
- 2:52Speaker 1: there without an ego, and I went to do something
- 2:55Speaker 1: that was very possible that I could fail at and
- 2:58Speaker 1: was then sooh stoked and excited when I succeeded. This week,
- 3:05Speaker 1: I am back at it, and now I've hit one,
- 3:08Speaker 1: I've hit two, I'm leveling up to three. And today,
- 3:12Speaker 1: for the first time, I said, why don't you just try?
- 3:15Speaker 1: Why don't you just go for it? Because it is
- 3:17Speaker 1: in these moments where there is resistance that we do
- 3:21Speaker 1: learn the most. And that is the really beautiful thing
- 3:24Speaker 1: about working out right is that it is truly a
- 3:26Speaker 1: metaphor for every hard thing that we will come across
- 3:33Speaker 1: in our life. Did I get the third pull up?
- 3:35Speaker 1: It's up for debate? There was like some squirming and
- 3:38Speaker 1: some like usage, and I won't bother you with the particulars,
- 3:42Speaker 1: but what I did was that I tried, and I
- 3:46Speaker 1: wasn't scared of failing, and I realized, in the act
- 3:50Speaker 1: of failing again up for debate, that I'm better for
- 3:54Speaker 1: trying at all. And so I bring you that lesson
- 3:58Speaker 1: this week. I bring you that takeaway this week. You
- 4:00Speaker 1: that as the thing that I'm molling over. If you
- 4:03Speaker 1: don't put yourself out there, if you don't try, if
- 4:06Speaker 1: you aren't willing to fail, you might miss out on
- 4:08Speaker 1: the great things that are available to you, right as
- 4:13Speaker 1: Dakota Lindworm and Des Linden and Chelaine Flanagan and so
- 4:16Speaker 1: many of the excellent women that I've had the privilege
- 4:19Speaker 1: of sitting down with on this show have said before
- 4:22Speaker 1: going after their scary dreams, going after something that might
- 4:26Speaker 1: seem a little bit delusional is the best thing that
- 4:29Speaker 1: they had ever done for themselves. And so my prompt
- 4:34Speaker 1: for you this week is, what's something that's delusional for you?
- 4:38Speaker 1: What is that big exciting thing that's worth failing for,
- 4:43Speaker 1: that's worth putting yourself out there for. What do you
- 4:46Speaker 1: want to go after and maybe fail at, knowing that
- 4:49Speaker 1: that failure is truly actually an opportunity, right, a big opportunity,
- 4:57Speaker 1: And now a listener question, only big fan of what
- 5:01Speaker 1: you do over there? And writing in referencing last week's
- 5:05Speaker 1: Weekly Hurdle newsletter, I am working on my goals for
- 5:10Speaker 1: the new year, and candidly just feel super overwhelmed with
- 5:13Speaker 1: everything that's in front of me. I feel like there's
- 5:16Speaker 1: so much I want to do in my personal, professional, financial,
- 5:19Speaker 1: mind body, mindfulness, all of these different categories, and I'm
- 5:23Speaker 1: unsure where to begin. What am I supposed to do.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Thank you so much again for everything you do. I
- 5:29Speaker 1: know this is a bit sporadic. Appreciate it, Tessa, Wow,
- 5:33Speaker 1: I get this. This is a common sentiment for so
- 5:36Speaker 1: many people when it comes to setting goals, right, And
- 5:39Speaker 1: what I will say to you is something that I
- 5:41Speaker 1: encouraged the group of individuals that I worked with last
- 5:44Speaker 1: week here in New York, and that is choose three areas.
- 5:48Speaker 1: So tonight, if you had to set one goal in
- 5:52Speaker 1: three different categories. Maybe those categories include health, finances, work, career, relationships,
- 5:59Speaker 1: personal growth, or mindfulness. Pick one goal to focus on
- 6:04Speaker 1: in each of those categories, and it will help you
- 6:07Speaker 1: narrow things down a bit. It can be great to
- 6:10Speaker 1: have a ton of different goals, but I want to
- 6:13Speaker 1: urge you if you feel like it's just too much,
- 6:16Speaker 1: get a little bit more specific. So maybe your goals
- 6:20Speaker 1: are something like get three pull ups consecutively in twenty
- 6:25Speaker 1: twenty five, or save ten thousand dollars in the next
- 6:29Speaker 1: three hundred and sixty five days, or do breathwork daily
- 6:34Speaker 1: for at least three minutes. Those are some examples of mine. Right,
- 6:38Speaker 1: start with those three and work on those three. That
- 6:41Speaker 1: doesn't mean that you can accomplish other things this year,
- 6:43Speaker 1: but it means it will give you a foundational jumping
- 6:46Speaker 1: off point where you can start to achieve, feel that
- 6:49Speaker 1: positive progress and then scale up from there. I hope
- 6:53Speaker 1: this helps make sure you're following along with hurdle over
- 6:56Speaker 1: on social It's at Hurdle podcast. I am over at
- 6:58Speaker 1: Emily Abadi another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time
